A part of the ServiceMaster empire, TruGreen Chemlawn proclaims that it "will give your lawn the nutrients it needs to produce a thicker, greener carpet of grass." Maybe so, but we hear from many consumers who would give anything to stop TruGreen from showing up again. Then there are those who would like a little more service rather than much less.
A brief sample of representative complaints is below; for more, click on any of the cateogories to the right.
Angie of Lutz, FL August 21, 2008
Angie of Lutz FL (08/21/08) Trugreen came to my home well over a year ago and promised to get rid of all the weeds and make my lawn look great. (It already looked good.) I decided to change services and go with them. Then in April of this year I noticed a small brown spot in the front of my yard and in the back. I thought I just needed to water more. In May I notice two more spots. The first week of June I left for a trip and did not return until the last day of July. When I saw my yard I couldn't believe it. Huge brown patches. My neighbor came over and told me it was bug damage and that he noticed it in early June.
I called TRUGREEN and cancel my service and refused to pay the last statement. A man who owns a sod company came out to look at the damage and said he couldn't believe that I had a company taking care of my lawn. That they should have to pay for the damage to my lawn. He said it was full of weeds and overrun by bugs. I called TRUGREEN and the representive told me it was my fault that the yard looked like it did because I wasn't calling them every two weeks to let them know there was a problem. The manager Wayne called and left a message that they are not responsible for bug damage and they were not a replacement company and would not be paying to repair my lawn.
If they are not responsible for bug damage then what was I paying them for. I thought I was paying them to take care of my lawn and watch for problem and treat those problems as needed. If I knew about lawns and how to treat and take care of them I would do it myself. I am getting complaints from my neighborhood and have 30 days to repair the appearance of my lawn before I am fined from the Home Owners Assoc. TRUGREEN should change their name to TRUBROWN.
1200.00 to repair the damage to my yard that happened when TRUGREEN was suppose to be taking care of it. Bill of Cincinnati, OH August 15, 2008
Bill of Cincinnati OH (08/15/08) I took the deal they had and signed up for the year. They came and went sevrel times and left signs on my front lawn. they said they knocked on my door but that was a lie. I had spread 1500 yards of grass seed before starting the service. Now my front lawn is even more bare than before. Now mmy front lawn is green in the bear spots i called a friend who been in the business for 23 years he drove long distance to check my lawn. He told me the reason my flowers are dying was cause they sprayed they. then they charged me for something i didn't order and said my wife did. I canceled the service and now they keep calling me using unlisted numbers.
Bare spots, Ground is green dead plants i have to wait till i can get this stuff out of my ground before i can reseed... Angela of Westford, MA August 8, 2008
Angela of Westford MA (08/08/08) We received a bill from TruGreen in the amount of 235.00 for services provided. We called the number located on the invoice and pay the bill over the phone. The next day we get a call saying...we haven't received payment for your invoice. We explain that we paid it yesterday but they do not see any information detailing this. So we assume the Customer Service Representative didn't take our information down correctly the day before. So we again gave our information.
The following day I see two charges on my account, both in the amount of 235.00. Well even though this mistake was on them, it will take them 6-8 weeks to refund MY money. After several attempts to straighten this out with customer service it was escalated to corporate. (The local customer service department is extremely rude and insensitive) The corporate office tells me, no problem, you should see you refund in 5 days.
After 5 days I still did not see my refund so I call back. The woman now says, well we have a check we will be sending to you. Well today is August 8th and I still am out the 235.00, I am starting to believe I will never get this money back.
Although 235.00 may not seem like a lot to most people, it is to my family. We recently purchased a home, have a baby, and are living paycheck to paycheck to pay our bills. Our accoount would have been overdrawn if I hadn't transferred from our savings to cover it. I have spent many lunch hours trying to get my money and I am lost as to what to do next. Ali of Holden, MA July 25, 2008
Ali of Holden MA (07/25/08) The TruGreen lawn care is a rip off company. The bill me 101.00 for 44lb of grub control and 69.00 for 44lb of fertilizer. I was watching him to the application and he walked through my lawn with hand held spreader which doesnt hold more that 5lb wait and he was done in 3 minutes. He didnt know I was watching him the whole time from inside of the house.
When I asked him about what he put down? He said 44lb of grub control and 44lb fertilizer. Then I told him I was watching him from inside the house and you went around once and it took you 3 minutes, how could have put 88lb of grub control and fertilizer, hes response was, oh, grub control and fertilizer was mixed. Then I said even what you say is true, your hand held spreader doesnt even hold more that 5lb wait and he was adamant that he did put down 44lb.
They just ripping off customers. I like to see this company to be fully investigated and pay for their fraudulent business practice. So as of 07/25/08 I canceled my lawn care with them.
Don of Ringgold, GA July 23, 2008
Don of Ringgold GA (07/23/08) I signed up with TruGreen for lawn & shrubbery treatment with the understanding - in writing - that the service could be canceled at anytime. I subsequently canceled the service before any treatment or service was performed. Their operator showed up twice to treat my lawn after the cancelation and each time I sent him away. I spoke with Wendy & Ms. Hughes no less than three times and sent emails as well, but they were very insistent that I not cancel (not that I couldn't, just that they did not want me to).
A few weeks later I received an invoice for approximately 160.00 for services rendered which was false. I again spoke with Ms. Hughes and she agreed to issue a credit for the full amount. Then, today 7/23/08 I received a phone call from TruGreen stating that I owe them the 160.00. At this point they are harassing me for something that I don't owe and I invited them to take me court, or I would take them to court, since I now believe that they are perpetrating a scam.
Mental stress only - I would not dare allow them to access my lawn or property now!
