What You Can Do

A part of the ServiceMaster empire, TruGreen Chemlawn proclaims that it "will give your lawn the nutrients it needs to produce a thicker, greener carpet of grass." Maybe so, but we hear from many consumers who would give anything to stop TruGreen from showing up again. Then there are those who would like a little more service rather than much less.

A brief sample of representative complaints is below; for more, click on any of the cateogories to the right.

Amy of Winnabago IL (09/13/08)
After relentless marketing calls from Tru-Green I gave in and order the season package of 5 lawn treatments. I understand the spring in Northern Illinois was a bit dicey, and realize the first application was late-no prblem. Not once this season has our yard looked green or been weed free. In June we called to suggest that the next application be applied because we had weeds and the lawn looked anemic. We did get a visit, but the only action was to say give it time and that we should consider more services.

A call in July revealed that we had opted out of the fifth treament (funny they hadn't opted out of cashing the check that included all five treatments). We water every morning for 15 minutes as suggested- when will the lawn green? To say the least we will NEVER use Tru Green again. This was our second go around in the past six years. There has been no change with Tru Green, but over the years we have done our homework on lawn care-we're going it alone in 09.

Don't waste the 250

I have been using the TruGreen lawn service for two years now. When I hired them in the spring of 2007, my lawn, which is 40,000 square feet, was as lush and perfect as a PGA course. Also, I have a sprinkler system which fully waters the lawn should drought conditions occur, and with the nice rain throughout this past summer, that has not been an issue.

Right now, my lawn looks like an amature has taken care of it. Overrun with weeds and brown spot ( cinch bugs and multiple weeds ). The weeds, when I complained was told nothing can be done in the middle of summer and will be addressed NEXT year, before they become active. The bugs they say happens. I have read many of the others posts and agree with virtually everyone. The way they make their cash is simple....apply about 1/10th of what they really should be applying and thus, starving our lawns for what they need. Good bye TruGreen, gone for good.

John of Sandown, NH September 8, 2008

I have a contract with the above for Lawn service. I have been a customer for a few years. I was advised to have my lawn aerated and over seeded. I agreed to this, the technician came 9/4/8 at 9am and was gone by 9.18am. In this time he supposedly aerated 2000 sq ft of lawn and over seeded. The bill was 200.00 with a 75.00 charge for the seed. The invoice claimed that 4 lbs was used.

I called three times to get information on this and on the third attempt was told Stewart would call back. He did and was quite rude and totally indifferent to my questions. I believe this company requires some investigation into their business practices and the quality of their employees. Perhaps you can direct my question/complaint to the correct person as I am unable to reach anyone with any interest in the customer. Thank you in advance. I feel they are taking advantage of senior citizens.

Talita of Alpine, UT September 7, 2008

I contracted with TruGreen about lawn service in spring of 2008. Since then I have had nothing but problems! It cost me over 600 to completely ruin my lawn. It is brownish, yellowish with a tint of light green, not lush and dark green like it should be. Additionally, the lawn is overgrown with weeds. Each time they come out the tell me to just give it a little time.

Well a little time has passed -- to be precise since May (now Sep 08) not one weed has died. They are overtaking my lawn and quite frankly my lawn looks atrocious. Every time I get a different story but there never is any admittance of their wrong-doing. I have been told that they sprayed the neighbor's lawn by accident, that I need to wait, that I water too much, that I water too little, that it is the flower beds fault, that the technician broke his arm, had to go to the doctor, has personal problems. What do I care? I would like them to take responsibility and give me the services I paid for. That's all!

Bob of Lumberton, NJ September 3, 2008

Bob of Lumberton NJ (09/03/08)
I hired trugreen to fertalize my lawn and also hired their tree and shrub service. I had a perfect lawn before trugreen now I have dead spots all over. In july when the tech came out to look at it, he said it was dollar spot and they would treat it. Now its August and its worse and the same tech is now saying it lawn mower wheel marks. Does he think Im a moron? I had another service take a look at it and they said it was dollar spot plus another fungus.

They came out to aerate to try and fix the problem (for 300) They charged me 135 for seed! they used about 10 worth of seed and did not even aerate the entire yard. I hired the tree service because of a small bagworm problem, Now I have a huge bagworm problem. Trugreen are liars, cheats and thieves. Do not use them!
