What is Citibank?

Citibank is a global bank and one of the largest financial institutions in the world. It’s a subsidiary of Citigroup, a multinational investment banking and financial services corporation. Collectively, the company manages more than $1.7 trillion in assets, according to the Federal Reserve at the time of publishing.

Citibank has a significant presence around the world, with operations in almost 160 countries and territories. This global reach makes Citibank a preferred bank for international travelers and businesses, as it offers a seamless banking experience across different countries and currencies.

How does Citibank work?

Opening an account with Citibank is generally a straightforward process. Customers can apply for an account online, over the phone or in person at a branch location. To open an account, you need to provide personal identification information, such as your name, address, date of birth and Social Security number. You might also need to provide proof of income and employment.

Citibank offers a range of relationship perks to its customers, depending on the type of account you have and your level of banking activity. For example, some accounts offer higher interest rates or waived fees for certain transactions.

Citibank also offers rewards programs for its credit cards, which allow customers to earn points or cash back for purchases.

Citibank products and services

Citibank offers a variety of products and services, including checking and savings accounts, credit cards, personal loans, mortgages and investment products.

Checking accounts
Unless you’re a Citigold customer, all of Citibank’s checking accounts have monthly fees — but they can be waived when you meet certain account requirements.

Its Access Account, Basic Banking and Citibank Account packages are ideal for everyday banking needs, while its Citi Priority, Citigold and Citigold Private Client packages are best for those needing wealth management services. Perks vary by account package but can include ATM reimbursements, preferred rates, pricing and travel benefits, and more.

At the time of publishing, you can earn up to $2,000 when you open a new Citibank checking account.

Savings accounts and CDs
The Citibank Savings Account comes with different perks, features and fees depending on which banking package you have (Access, Basic Banking, Citibank, Citi Priority, Citigold or Citigold Private Client). At the time of publishing, you can earn up to $5,000 when you open a new Citibank savings account.

Citibank certificates of deposit (CDs) and banking IRAs offer fixed interest rates for a set term. Rates vary by term, but select CD options have competitive yields that rival online banks.

Credit cards
Citibank offers a wide range of credit cards with rewards programs that offer cash back, points and miles. Some cards have no annual fee, while others offer premium benefits like airport lounge access or hotel benefits.

Citibank also has cards designed for balance transfers or those with fair or poor credit, making it easier to find a card that fits individual needs.

Loans
Citibank has several loan options for borrowers, including personal loans, lines of credit, mortgages and small business loans. It has several loan calculators on its site to help you estimate your borrowing power.
Wealth management
Citibank offers a range of wealth management services for its Citigold, Citigold Private Client and Citi Priority customers. These services include investment management, estate planning and retirement planning and are typically available through a dedicated relationship manager or financial advisor.

Citibank fees

Citibank does not charge fees for overdrafts or returned items. However, its checking and savings accounts have monthly fees that range from $0 to $30, depending on your banking package.

There are multiple ways to waive these monthly fees, such as making a qualifying direct deposit each month or maintaining a combined minimum monthly balance across all Citibank accounts.

In addition to monthly maintenance, Citibank may also charge the following:

  • $2.50 for using an out-of-network ATM
  • $30 for stop payment request
  • $15 for incoming domestic and international wires
  • $25 to $35 for outgoing domestic wires
  • $35 to $45 for outgoing international wires

I was a victim of fraud on a Costco Credit card, the hacker got to my online account, made a bunch of charges, created a checking account with Citibank and transferred a cash advance in the amount of $500. We reported the same day the problem and the Credit Fraud team, managed to cancel the charges, but seems that forgot to deal with the Cash advance and the fraudulent checking account created. Next day I am monitoring the account and I see that there is a wire coming from my checking account with other bank, in the amount of $2300.

I contacted Citibank and asked them why that checking account was still open, showing $500 on it. The representative told me we will close it now, and it disappeared from my online account. What she did not say is what she did with the $500, but I assumed that she will revert the original cash advance transaction. So in my mobile account. it showed as Pending Dispute. I called 2 weeks later to find why that charge still showing up, and the lady told me that the charge will not be credited and I had to pay, and hang up on me.

I had to go in person to the bank, and an officer expended several hours on the phone trying to help me, and finally got to a group that found the $500 in a Citibank SUBLEDGER account, and instructed us to call back to the credit department and explicitly tell them that the IUR department found the money in the Subledger account, and they needed to file a 'HOLD HARMLESS CLAIM" so they can pay back to the credit card the $500.

We tried, and after losing all my afternoon sitting with the embarrassed personal banker that was trying to help me, since we had passed an hour on hold, he told me to go home and try to contact the bank myself and explain all the info. I have wasted 3 hours being transfer from one place to another, and nobody cares, I explain what I was told, and they transfer me to other team, Nobody wants to deal with it, and in the meantime I have to pay $500 that never were taken and are sitting in the bank. Is Citibank an entity that needs to steal from his clients?

Citibank turns over all its deceased accounts to a bill collector Ascension even if the account is currently paid in full and had been paid in full each month for 8 years. No opportunity for a final statement. No representative expressing concern unlike Bank of America and US Bank. Just an immediate turn over to a collection agency where both companies refuse to provide a itemized statement so the small amount not due for another 28 days could be paid. Really, sleazy and the only way around it was Costco who has signed on to be CitiBank’s partner. Costco sent a statement and it was paid but I have still received two wrap up letters from Ascensions to document their recognition of the payment while threatening to sue the estate if there are anymore charges. Not cool to harass someone who lost their partner of 35 years.

I contacted Citi before the payment was processed because I noticed my account was set up to make a full automatic payment of $3,336.31, which I never intended to authorize. I had already made a $200 payment for the month and requested that the automatic payment be canceled. The representative I spoke with the day before told me they could not see the transaction on their end, so there was nothing they could cancel. I monitored my account all day and didn’t see the payment pending either. The next day, as soon as the payment appeared, I contacted Citi again. This time I was told it was too late to cancel, even though I had already called the previous day asking for help. Instead of resolving the issue, I was told the payment would attempt to withdraw funds three separate times, potentially resulting in returned payment fees if there weren’t sufficient funds.

I don’t understand why Citi can’t cancel a payment that a customer is actively trying to stop before it is successfully processed. The information I received was inconsistent, and no one was willing to take ownership or provide a reasonable solution. This experience has been stressful and disappointing. Customer service repeatedly apologized but offered no real assistance. Once this matter is resolved, I will seriously reconsider whether I want to continue banking with Citi. I expected much better from a major financial institution.

If I wasn't forced to use CitiBank, I would stay 1000 miles away from it.

I have been on the phone with Citibank several times. They said just don't use the Wallet, but when I ask if that means their card can't be used in the Wallet, they say that I can use it in the Wallet but if I do, it will get flagged as fraud. Huh? When I asked to speak with a manager, I was put an eternal hold and eventually just hung up. We are done with Citibank.

My husband and I applied for a CitiBank card with an application we received on an American airline flight, promising 80,000 miles if we spent $1000 each in the first 3 months, which we did. After inquiring about eligibility, we were assured by 3 different agents that we did. Our concern was that we’ve had Citibank cards before, but were assured we qualified. When our bill came it didn’t have the 80,000 miles. When inquiring we were told we had a card within 2 years. The card we applied for was a different type of card, and they did see in their own records that we were indeed told we qualified for the miles. They offered us 1000 miles, which doesn’t help us because you can’t use partial miles and cash. We feel it was definitely a bait and switch practice. We received no help from customer service **

If you must call Citibank to talk with a representative, the AI that greats you will not send to a live person, instead, it wants to go through all charges when you want to dispute calls. When you finally get to talk with a person after you’ve identified that you need to report fraud, the person you get is not on this continent and one cannot understand them. When they finally determine that you are reporting fraud, they then need to connect you to the fraud department, which is where the call should have been directed from the beginning. Then, of course, this person’s accent is so thick that they can’t be understood. With all the people out of work in the US, an American company should be employing US citizens rather than foreign call stations.

Discover can afford to use US representatives, why can’t larger Citibank. Rethinking continuing the use of Citibank services. Get much better service from Discover, AmEx, and Apple Card. All my balances are paid each month. The only reason I have this card is that it is attached to Costco. I wish Costco would switch back to AmEx or switch to Apple or even Discover.

I signed up for the Citibank brokerage account. Everything was fine for the first week, even though the layout of the app is horrible and not user-friendly. The second week, my account got locked, and I wasn't able to withdraw deposits or make trades. After talking to multiple people and being lied to that they would call me back, I finally found somebody who resolved my issue; it took a whole week and multiple people to talk to. They all lied to me and told me they would call back and none ever did except for the last guy who did resolve my issue.

I didn't use the app anymore until the next week on Monday morning, I went to make a deposit, and it wouldn't go through. I then tried to make a trade, and it would not work; it said it did not go through. So I called customer service again, and they told me my account was locked and that they would resolve it and that they would call me back. My account is still locked, and I have talked to eight different people, all of whom said that they would call me back, and I have not received one phone call. This is without a doubt the worst customer service experience I have ever had in my life. All I want to do now is get my account unlocked and close it. I will be filing complaints with the proper people. If you're thinking about opening a Citibank brokerage account, I would think twice; you will regret it.

Classic failure to support a customer. Rolled over from Barkley (AA advantage card). Name on Citi card is wrong. Card not accepted on travel websites. Called for changes and relief. After over an hour speaking with a representative, was told that I would have to wait until receiving a code n the mail which will take 7-10 business days. Then I have to call in the code and then wait to receive a new card (7-10 more business days?). All of this because their card is bad. Asked for an overnight mailing and was told it was not possible. Asked to speak to a manager, but was told one was not available. Was told I would get a call back. Hasn’t happened. Barkley card would send a replacement card overnight. I wonder who exactly benefited from this transition to citi.

I recently called to get my balance. I paid the balance in full with a real person on the phone. A month later, I got a few letters. I ignored them. Because I no longer do business with Citibank and my account was paid off. But apparently there was a few dollars that wasn't paid. Due to interests that got lost along the way. So for 3 months, this went on and shot my credit down. What I failed to understand is when you called to pay off your bill in full, and you pay the bill off in full. How they're able to add 3 extra dollars and completely ruin your credit. After three months and not even care. How they get away with that blows my mind. I will never do business with citibank. Again, high interest rates for no reason.

Citi hasn’t even sent me my new card yet and it’s been nothing but a nightmare already. I notified Citi that I would be taking my family to Europe on vacation about a week before we left. They shut down my existing card for no reason. I verified all of the charges with a service agent - the 11th agent I had to speak with…yes, I said the 11th agent- and she said that my card was good to go. Then, it continued to get declined. I called back and got a different story from a manager. Long story short, I am in Europe right now without a major credit card and we still have another week here. The Citi agents could not be more unhelpful.

I write this as a warning to current and future Citibank customers. At the beginning of December 2025, I opened a 6 month Certificate of Deposit online with Citibank for a significant amount as they were offering a little better rate than my local banks… As for the amount, think of paying cash for a nice Audi or BMW car. The process was quick and easy, transferring the money from my primary savings with my local bank to Citibank. A few weeks later it occurred to me that I didn’t set beneficiaries, and I should probably do that, as I am middle-aged and one just never knows. After logging into to the Citibank portal, I couldn’t find any place to do this, so I called the customer service number asking for guidance. I was told this wasn’t available online, and they would have to mail me a packet that I would have to complete and return to update this.

Roughly 2 weeks later, I received said document in the postal mail, I completed it, took it to my local bank to have it notarized (required), and returned it via postal mail. A few weeks later, I received a letter confirming that my children had been added as beneficiaries. The account matured at the beginning of June, 2026. I called the customer service number to close the account. It was obviously overseas customer service at the 1-888-Citibank number. Scripted canned responses, challenges with English, etc. I was told I could not close the account and I would have to visit a branch. I explained that I opened this account online, and there were no physical locations in the state that I lived in, and I would simply just like to close the account and have the funds returned to the account of origin at my local bank. This was refused.

It was then explained to me that a check would be mailed to my house payable to myself and in trust for my two children. I rebutted that I was the sole account owner, the children were only beneficiaries, and this was not a trust account, but a CD. I was assured this would be handled correctly. A week later the check shows up made out to myself and in trust for the children. Neither of the two financial institutions I bank with locally would accept the check for deposit as it was made out. I was told I would either have to open a trust (requiring hiring an attorney) or have Citibank reissue the check payable only to myself. I contacted Citibank many times over the next 10 business days, at the 888 Citibank number, never speaking with the same person twice, including multiple supervisors. I explained the situation until I was blue in the face and not one person was remotely competent or made any effort to resolve the issue.

I wasn’t ever told the same thing twice, aside from when I would state that I couldn’t deposit the funds with the clerical error on the check that I would “have to follow my bank's policies”. Dead end. After digging around online I found the nearest physical branch and called them. The lady I spoke with pulled up the account, and stated she could see that this was never a trust but that my bank should allow me to deposit the check. I explained that I wasn’t trying to argue but the point remains that I cannot. She sent me a letter stating that I was always the sole account owner and the kids were simply beneficiaries. She spoke with her manager who said in his opinion, my only other recourse was to visit their branch, open an account, deposit the check, and return to close out the account once the check cleared. This would involve roughly 8 hours of driving to complete, not factoring in Chicago traffic.

Despite this letter, neither of the two institutions locally would let me deposit. I found a phone number for Citibank Gold (888-248-4465) and called and spoke with the team there. It was obvious that this team was stateside, the language barrier was gone, and it felt like the problem was understood. It took multiple calls here, again, never the same two people, but ultimately, a case was opened with the Executive Review Unit (ERU) for review. I was told I would be contacted with more information and I spoke with the case analyst that had assigned to me. She called me back maybe an hour later asking for information from the printed check, and gave me a direct number to the ERU (605-331-1698) as well as her extension and my case # and promised to call me back or email me in a couple of days.

I never received a call or email. After 4 days, I called the number, frequently getting sent to voicemail. 9 calls later throughout the day I reached her, She can see that a stop payment was put on the check I had, but no further information was available. A different team handles the issuance of a new check, and she doesn’t know if they’re correcting the error or not, she will call back later in the day. 4 days later, no contact, but I did get an email from UPS about an incoming package from Citibank (this is something that I have set up through UPS).

Almost a month passed since calling to close the account, I have lost more in interest than the extra I earned by going with the higher rate CD not to mention I still don’t have the initial investment or even a valid check if I were to make the trek to a branch. I have placed roughly 60 phone calls, most of which were dead ends or disconnections and dealt with utter incompetence and bureaucracy at every level. Not even the most basic tasks could be handled. I have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Resolution finally occurred after 3.5 weeks of multiple daily calls when UPS showed up yesterday with a replacement check appropriately made out. Already closed my credit card account with them as well. Would NOT do any sort of business with them again.

Seems Citibank PURPOSEFULLY does not send billing to email, trying to make missed payments that would default to higher interest rates. At first I received regular emails telling me when my payment was due, along with the amount due and the balance. About halfway through the "promotional period" they stopped emailing me this information. Thankfully I always keep track on my own and was able to avoid what feels like their attempt to cause me to miss payments & cause "default" interest rates. Their customer service is terrible and good luck getting a representative you can clearly understand, not to mention the frequent VERY long wait only to get NO answers to any questions.

Also, beware of using the balance transfer offers because if you do and then try to just pay off the balance transfer without making purchases, they will HOUND you CONSTANTLY to use your card for purchases. WORST credit card company I have ever dealt with & seems like deceptive practices with them not notifying me about my bills on a monthly bases like they are supposed to.

I can't even access my online account. Not having access to your own money is very troublesome and the fact that they don't care I will never ever put a dime or penny back into this bank again. I will definitely close this account once I receive my debit card.

This company does not even deserve ONE STAR...and I would give them a negative rating if available. I have been a credit card holder/user for 50 years and have excellent credit. AA (Barclays) switched my card to Citibank in April this year. I never received my new card. I called customer service, they sent a new one...which I never received. I called back to let them know, gave them a new address and told them this was my permanent address as I had moved recently. I was issued another card...which I never received!

I called today and explained the issue, made sure they had the correct address and was told a new card would arrive in 5-7 days. I hung up thinking this was all resolved and my new card was on the way. But NO! Five minutes later I get a FRAUD ALERT for the new card/new number. I have called the fraud line 4 times, waiting 15-25 minutes each time with no human interaction. I called back to customer service, who put me through to another department that said they could not help, had to call the fraud alert line....which I did and held for another 25 minutes. Once again, I tried customer service and now just sit on hold.... I give up! They obviously do not want my business. When (and IF) I ever get the new card, I will promptly cancel it and move on to a better company that values a good customer.

This would be a negative 10 if possible. I was changed from Barclay by AA...only 3 days in, and it's been horrific with CITI Credit Card Services....I have spent 6 hours on the line, spoke with 13 people, and they have placed a hold on my card every 12 HOURS...what gives? They will not take any accountability whatsoever. They are the worst, no extra points or anything offered for my time, now I have to wait another 8 days for them to close my account and issue another card, which then I will have to go through changing all of my pre-pay accounts AGAIN... anyone receive any resolutions

Citibank's "customer service" is truly worthless. In fact, I think the company might be better off eliminating customer service positions altogether, and forcing customers to unquestioningly accept the circumstances of their accounts. The result would be the same. Yesterday, I called Citi because due to a product change, I suddenly had two of the same types of credit cards under my name. I asked the representative to close one of the accounts.

Immediately, there were red flags—and not just that, she was ** and could barely speak or understand English. First of all, the disclosure she sent over after more than 15 minutes on hold was incorrect, and suggested that she would be closing a different account. I immediately called this out; she apologized and put me back on hold. 15 minutes later, I had a different disclosure with the correct information on it.

"You're not going to close that account, right?" I asked, providing her with the last four digits of the account I wanted to remain open. "Of course not," she insisted, and waved off my concerns. We finished the call; I stupidly trusted that she had understood me, and that she had correctly completed my request. I log on today to find that both accounts are canceled. I call back in, and not only does every rep I try and talk with speak even worse English than the last, but none of them can get their answers straight.

Some tell me the account can't be reopened. Others insist they can only make a "request" (which the bank may or may not honor). Still others try to accuse me of lying, seemingly unable to believe that their sister in service couldn't possible engaged in such idiocy. I'm still on hold, waiting for a second-level escalation, hoping I get someone who's not a total moron and who can reopen my account as fast as it was closed. If not, however, then maybe it's for the best. Citi doesn't have customer service—why should I remain one of their customers?

Citi may be the worst bank I have ever dealt with. I tried to talk to a real person but was told Id have to wait 25 min. I opted for a callback and 4 hrs. later I am still waiting. I called Chase and they put me thru to a person in under 4 min. I'm sure they fired most of their reps thinking AI would take care of it. Nope.

Citi bank is honestly a terrible bank. Those customer service representatives that you call on the phone when you don’t wanna go into a branch are literally the most useless people living. They be having no answers for you and we’ll sit there and send you to the most randomness department hoping that they’ll have answers for you. Even the damn supervisors are useless as hell. I hate this bank so much. They literally know how to boil my blood, things are simple as transaction issues can’t even be solved or figured out with this bank because all of them are clueless and can’t do their job. And when you point out that they are not doing their job or you’re going against what they’re recommending because you know what’s wrong all they’ll do is hang up the phone on you. No type of decorum no type of professionalism and no type of respect. Who the hell is hiring these people to be customer service?

Buyer Beware. If I could rate this card a zero I would. I used DriveCard issued by Citibank to pay for car repairs that turned out to be defective and negligent work. When the merchant refused to fix their mistakes I turned to this credit card company for help filing a quality of service dispute. Instead of protecting me, their claims department completely dismissed my evidence and refused to help. I advice stay away from this card. They do not back up their customers when merchants take advantage of them. They also are in violation of federal consumer protection standards.

Citi is trash! They really need to be sued again. I have had their Costco card for 4 years now. It had a 12000 limit. I have a Diamond preferred card with a 8000 limit. The costco card was used to a balance of 10,500 with a minimum payment of 300, never was the minimum made. It is always 500 to 700 a month! The Diamond card has only been used once for 700 and it is at 400 after the first month of payments, which will be paid off this month! Citi took it upon themselves to drop my limit on my Costco to 10700 and my Diamond to 630 a decrease of 9200 plummeting my credit score 35 points. I don't know why they chose to do this but it's garbage. I will continue to pay them off and never use their card again! Very bad business model and I see for my own eyes now why their ratings suck!

Today I visited the Citi Bank in Palm Springs, CA with a complex issue with registering my new Citi Credit Card. I tried for several days trying to navigate the website to register and wound up going in circles. Problem was I had several old Citi accounts and no longer had my log-in information. Fortunately, I was greeted by David ** who not only understood my problem he took ownership of the issue and with great diligence solved the problem. Incidentally, have been a customer of Bank of America for the past 54 years and have never had a BofA branch employee assist me in the way David ** did today. Great job, David and thank you for your professionalism.

Citibank offers excellent worldwide presence and useful perks like global transfers and competitive credit card rewards. However, customer service can be inconsistent—long wait times and occasional account access issues arise. Monthly fees are high unless you maintain minimum balances. Great for frequent travelers or expats, but for everyday local banking, smaller banks or online options may offer better value and support.

This company lacks in customer service. With the financial strains that every day hard working lower income people deal with, Citibank USA won't waive a $29 fee for a mistake that was made on the application. The application somehow had a bank account attached to it that had been closed for the better of a year. Several payments had been made from a primary bank account also attached to the application several years before this account was ever added and monthly payments thereafter. Nothing says "poor customer service" more than a company not being able to waive this $29 fee. I think it is very telling from this complaint how much Citibank values their customers and the customer service that they provide for them.

Worst credit card company ever. I have been with them quite awhile. I've always had card balances and then paid them. Up and down like a roller coaster. Now, when I pay they keep lowering my limit so that my credit score goes up faster due to percentage usage, than it goes down for making payments. Bunch of crap. Closing all my accounts.

This Citibank service and representatives are terrible--- gone downhill. If you have to do online bank transfers to your acct. It helps to realize if your acct show posted -- it isn't accurate -- if it says Bal. Available it isn't accurate. It takes hours - to get past the Bank robot to speak with a supervisor. Then they tell you have put holds on your money --- that doesn't show up --- unless there is a payment default. Here's a supervisor's secret -- when stuck in a loop w/ BOT try #00. To get a cust. Rep. --- saying Cust. Rep. will not work. Frankly -- if not for Costco cc and Auto pay utilities --- this would have been closed long ago. For most 15 of 20+ yrs. I went into office. We're out of state --- Take your money out of Citi Bank, they don't really want customers --- that why they treat them badly. Chase/W.F. seem to want to do Cust. Service.

I was forced into a Citibank account because AAdvantage moved my credit card there. They couldn't set up a website for me to log onto for way too long. When I was able to log in it was after the payment due date. I paid off the balance immediately but then was charged interest for some reason. I immediately canceled my account. I was never able to talk to a real person. I have always paid my entire balance every month and have never paid interest on this (or any) credit card. This is especially annoying cause they charge $100 per year to have the card. I am going to miss accumulating miles on American Airlines, but it is not worth it. Dealing with this company was just awful.
