On Saturday, March 14, 2026, my reservation for a minivan was not honored and I subsequently had to cancel my Spring Break vacation. I made the reservation 4 months prior, and I had received a conformation. I was told that there was no vehicle there that could accommodate my request. I was offered a regular vehicle at double the cost which I felt was very condescending and unprofessional. I needed a minivan that could accommodate six people, and I explained this to the rental location, however they didn't seem to care and it being so late, I was not able to secure a minivan for the trip with any other rental car agency, so I had to cancel my trip. The way this was handled was very unprofessional and I will never use that location for any type of business again.

I asked to put boyfriend on the rental as a second driver and was told no because our ID do not have the same address. I was very disappointed that I was not able to do this without paying a daily fee for more than 20.00 a day. I really needed help driving on a trip that took more than 7 hours. I asked the clerk if I could speak to a manager to see if they can help me out with adding him as a second driver without the fees and explain to them we live in the same house with mail. I was told to go to the Hertz counter to speak to a manager.
I asked the lady at the desk for a Manager, she then asked why do I need a manager. I told her we live in the same house but Thrifty car rental Oakland CA will not waive the fees because our ID do not have the address. She went on to say okay she'll get someone to speak to until she was interrupted by a lady sitting next to her saying, "Are you guys boyfriend and girlfriend?" I said yes but we live in the same household. She took over and said they will not waive the fees. This was a very difficult and dangerous situation for me because my trip was interrupted being I had to take lots of breaks to get through the driving. Please change this policy because people live together, pay bills together but do not necessarily have the same address on their ID. The daily fee would have cost more than my rental car cost plus we qualify to add him for free. Trip interrupted, I will not let him rent cars here anymore.

I can’t say enough great things about our experience with Thrifty Rental car in San Diego airport especially with Marissa. After an extremely stressful travel day, dealing with multiple issues at the Las Vegas airport involving Frontier and TSA, we ended up missing our original flight. We had to spend the entire day at the airport and purchase last-minute tickets with Southwest just to make it to San Diego later that evening. Needless to say, we arrived exhausted and frustrated.
But everything turned around the moment we met Marissa at Thrifty. From the start, she was incredibly welcoming, professional, and genuinely kind. Her positive attitude and warm personality instantly helped ease the stress from our long day. She made the rental process smooth, quick, and completely hassle-free, which was exactly what we needed.
Marissa went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of, and her customer service truly stood out. It’s rare to come across someone who can completely shift your day around like that, but she did just that. If you’re in the San Diego area and need a rental car, do yourself a favor and ask for Marissa at Thrifty at San Diego airport you won’t be disappointed. She’s amazing!

Rented for ten days at Thrifty Newark Airport. Said not to use their way too expensive EZ pass toll box. (26,- USD/day!) I used my own EZ pass New York Temporary Travel account using the license plate of the rental car. All the toll was payed directly from my credit card. But over a week after I gave the car back to Thrifty I got an e-mail from Thrifty with an invoice for the toll, 45,- USD. Above this a "convenience" fee from Thrifty at 44,- USD! Also no proof from EZ pass that this toll is actually billed in this period on this license plate to Thrifty. This all in an e-mail on which you can't reply. So no defense against this illegal bill.

Beware, they will take advantage of you and their parent company Hertz will try to shake you down! I rented a car here at the Thrifty at the airport through my credit card travel portal because they had a great rate. Went to pick up the car, there was damage to the trunk (several small dents). I took several pictures of the dents and of the car while it was parked in the stall. The pictures clearly show the damage and the pictures clearly show the car in the numbered stall in the Thrifty Rental Car pick-up area in the garage (I made sure to capture the sign & stall number in the picture as well). I took several pictures from multiple angles. I reported it at that time and was told the damage was already noted. I returned the car a few days later. When I returned it, there was nobody in the return area (at least when I arrived). Waited like 10 minutes, still nobody.
I received the rental return receipt shortly after with no charges (as I would expect since I filled up the fuel before returning). About 3 weeks later I receive an email from Hertz (parent to Thrifty) that the vehicle had been involved in an incident and I owed over $800 in damages. I received a letter in the mail shortly after. I called the 800 number on the letter and in the email, once I gave them my info, they immediately they also said I owed over $800 and wanted my credit card number to pay. I told them it was existing damage and that's when the fun began. I was given a different number to call.
I called the claim number and spoke to the assigned Central Recovery Unit Specialist; I explained the situation and I was told that when I reported the damage, I should have been given a form to fill out, I told the person that I wasn't given a form and I was told the damage was already noted (when I've rented from Budget and Enterprise and reported damage that was already reported, they did the same, told me it was already reported and no further action was needed and I never had an issue, and I rent cars for work travel several times a year). She told me that wasn't their policy and I should have filled out a form, how am I supposed to know their internal policy? Why did their staff tell me I didn't need to do anything? I tell them about the pics and she asks me to send, which I do.
A few weeks later, not days later, weeks, I get an email asking if I have any that are date/time stamped because without a date/time stamp they can't do anything. I replied telling her that a) the pictures clearly show the vehicle in question still in the pick-up area of the rental lot and clearly shows the damage, sign and stall number assigned to the car that I was told to go to (their computer records should have a history of the stall & day/time) (like, somehow I was able to go back to Honolulu and find the exact car I rented and find it in the pick-up area to stage photos almost 2 months after my vacation) and b) I told her the metadata on the pictures shows the date and time the pictures were taken...
They want actual date/time stamps on the pictures... Who actually turns that on so it shows the date/time on picture, especially since there is metadata embedded in the picture and anyone could photoshop a date/time onto the picture... I was tempted to just do that, photoshop the date/time, but that is a) dishonest, b) if I did that and they could tell it's photoshopped, then it gives them excuses to accuse me of violating some term or something and c) I shouldn't have to because of the metadata!!!
On top of all of this, the whole time I'm going back and forth in emails, I've been receiving multiple letters trying to get me to pay, I just received another this week telling me it's their final attempt to get ahold of me to resolve this matter; yet I've been in contact this whole time, what do they mean final attempt, I've been in communication for a few weeks and it's not like the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, the letters are signed from the same person I've been emailing and sending the photos to... They keep telling me to just have the credit card pay the damage, and yes, the card I used covers rental car damages, but they're not responsible either, yes that's the easy thing, but who knows how many customers Hertz has told they are responsible for this damage to this car? Especially if we all just have the credit card pay...
This is on Thrifty and Hertz, the damage is documented and I've provided proof, but they keep going. I already contacted the credit card company and explained the situation to them; they said I've definitely done my due diligence and have provided ample proof as far as they're concerned and if Thrifty or Hertz charge the card for the damage without my permission, to file a dispute and with what I've already provided to the credit card company they will deny the charge and reverse the charge.

(Boise, Idaho, 1/10/2025) I wish I'd read these reviews before I rented a car from Thrifty. The process was easy, the guy behind the counter was very pleasant, the car was clean and in excellent condition and returning the vehicle was a breeze. It was my first time renting a car and I was sure I was going to be a Thrifty repeat customer. I'd have given a five-star rating until I checked my credit card statement. What was supposed to be a $34.15 charge was $357.00. WTAF??! After almost an hour on hold then dealing with an associate who struggled with English then calling the counter where I picked up the car, I found out that they place funds on hold in case of damage. But they don't tell you that when you pick up the car. So my credit card has been over the limit and frozen for days while I wait for the charge to be reversed, which could take up to a week. Not cool Thrifty, Next time I'm going with Enterprise. And yes, I've read the reviews.

Employees of Thrifty Car Rental in Detroit (289 Lucas Dr. location) participate in a “bait-and-switch” scam, to which I fell victim yesterday (12/23/25), mid-afternoon. After securing a rental reservation with a third-party booking site with a $200 deposit more than 6 months ago, two women on duty at Thrifty informed me they could not accept my PayPal Mastercard as valid payment. I have used this card frequently for months online and in person with no problem. The present available credit on it stands around $18,000, my credit is Very Good, and I have a new, enhanced WA state driver's license.
Two days ago, I rented a car from Budget using this Mastercard. Following yesterday’s absurd refusal at Thrifty, I walked 10 minutes over to the Budget Rental office, and was able to rent another car for a week; I have it now. I suspect Thrifty does this to avoid giving me the discount rate I was guaranteed when I made this third-party booking early this year, so they can rent the vehicle instead at full Christmas rates to someone else. A DECEPTIVE practice, and it looks like I’m simply OUT the $200 deposit I made in the spring. In addition to posting this on consumer watch websites, I will contact the third party booking site, and recommend they stop sending customers to Thrifty. I will never rent from them again.

While you’re driving the vehicle tells you how far and how fast you can drive. Tracks your whereabouts and speed. I most definitely did not agree to invasion of my privacy. Charge extra fees on top of fees, unexpected fees. Just ridiculous company. Do not rent from this stupid ridiculous invasion of privacy company. You would surely be disappointed. Make sure you take a copy of your contract if they want you to give it back to them when you return the vehicle. They should change their name from thrifty to pricey! Nothing but scammers.

I've rented cars at this locations for several years. Vehicles offered were not as good as those available at other car rental but prices were fine. This year has been the last time for sure I rented a car from Thrifty. First of all my reservation through EconomyCarRental was not honored and I was charged more without any explanation and I wasn't even offered the type of vehicle I had requested. I was charged a further 400USD for a car I didn't want and I didn't require beside the increased priced compared to my reservation. Both the manager and an employee tried to help me out stating that I was entitled to get what I had booked but a couple of employees seemed to have more power than the manager itself. I had the feeling that they wanted to scam some money out of me anyway when I had declined any additional service and being aware that in Denver car rental offices are in the middle of nowhere and customers are forced to accept any solution.
The vehicle I was offered had food under the passenger's seat (better than the open vodka bottle I found last year in seat pouch which might have entitled me straight to jail if pulled over), tire's pressure so low that the alarm went off after about 10 miles and despite I had a full tank of gas agreement it contained only 75% of its volume. This issue was at least corrected by the agent at the parking lot exit. I wrote a complaint to Thrifty but I didn't even get a reply. I do rent vehicles in Denver for a total time of about 60 days every year. No use to say I will keep on doing it but from different providers.

Renters, please be extremely cautious. My recent experience with Thrifty/Hertz at the Washington, D.C. airport location was deeply troubling and should serve as a warning to anyone considering renting here. I rented a vehicle for a short weekend stay, picked it up Friday, returned it Sunday. The car was barely used, mostly parked in a private driveway, and returned spotless and with a full tank of gas. Upon return, a Thrifty employee walked around the vehicle, confirmed that everything was fine, and directed me to the terminal.
About 20 minutes later, while waiting for my flight, I received an email stating that an incident report had been opened for damages to the car. The photos attached were blurry, unclear, and impossible to verify, showing no concrete evidence that any damage even occurred, let alone that it happened while the vehicle was in my possession.
This type of after-the-fact damage claim is extremely concerning. Renters are being held responsible for issues that may have occurred after returning the car, without any transparent proof or time-stamped documentation. Once the vehicle leaves your sight, you have no control over what happens next, yet you can still be blamed.
It's disappointing to see such questionable practices from a major company. I returned the car in the same pristine condition I received it, and the employee on-site verified this. Yet somehow, a damage claim appeared less than half an hour later.
If you plan to rent from Thrifty or Hertz, protect yourself:-Take clear, time-stamped photos and videos of every side of the car at pickup and drop-off.
-Ask the employee to confirm in writing or on your receipt that the vehicle was inspected and cleared.
-Keep every document and email from your rental.
Honest customers shouldn't have to worry about false or unverified damage claims after doing everything right.

I reserved a vehicle a month before arrival at PDX airport. At the counter, I was told that the car category I chose online was not a real option (they didn't "carry any") and that they only had ONE vehicle, which was an upgrade (a Ford Expedition) for $1950 more after I already paid ($2200+ for the full reservation period). The two staff members stated that "this happens all the time" that this non-existent category is booked (an SUV comparable to a RAV4). You can imagine how flabbergasted and disgusted I am that you can make a reservation well in advance with no specific vehicle assigned.
They refused to cover the price difference, and I was forced to pay more with the only option of no rental at all during my trip!!! Plus, I had chosen the smaller SUV for my 82-year-old mother (with other family and luggage) who had a difficult time climbing in and out of a Ford Expedition. The story gets worse because they billed me at the end for $754+ to replace the windshield for a stone chip that a truck on the highway kicked up (commonplace and unavoidable). Shouldn't that be the "cost of doing business" for this company? I did not damage it intentionally and was not involved in an accident. There is no care or concern for the customer. I will NEVER rent from Hertz or Thrifty again.

On the 27th of October 2025 while traveling from crystal river Florida the car we had rented on the 3rd of October from Dulles international airport started surging and all electrical systems would go out and then come back on while driving. Roadside assistance was great in organising an exchange. However after having to divert to JAX from our original route for the exchange with instructions to go to Hertz rental counter. Upon arrival at the hertz counter a car was exchange car was allocated to us immediately, this was great and we thought no problem we are back on the road. Once we located the allocated car we found a car that was inappropriate for our luggage needs and was considerably smaller than the original rental.
They then went back to the hertz counter and this is where the unsatisfactory costumer service started, was told this is what you are getting and were told flat out the car trouble that we had experienced was not their problem and refused to provide us with an appropriate sized rental car. I then call Thrifty customer service and was told that thrifty would do a one time good faith upgrade if I was to pay for the upgrade which would be reimbursed upon returning rental car. I then handed the phone to the hertz counter customer service manager who completely ignored the representative who was on the phone. She then told me that she guaranteed I would not be reimbursed and my only option was to pay another $880 for an upgrade covering the same rental period of original rental agreement. I found this to be completely unacceptable and a form of extortion as we were now stranded at JAX without an appropriate rental car.
After receiving a complete refusal to help with the situation, they continued to only offer a Nissan Altima for our troubles. After 3 hours of utter frustration and neglect we decided we would make do with the Nissan Altima. This then put us 3 hrs behind on our holiday travel plans which could have completely avoided. I put it back to you thrifty car rental to compensate me for the utter disrespect and lack of professionalism towards a rental customer.

Stick with a more reputable company and away from Thrifty. This has got to be one of the worst companies I have ever rented from. When I arrived at the facility, they added $1000 dollars of fees on top of the Expedia price I agreed on. They claimed that the Expedia insurance may not cover it and I needed their insurance to cover the vehicle. After feeling there was no other option and being pressured, we paid it to find out they didn’t have the 12 person van. Only the 15 person one with no trunk.
They said we could wait about 20 minutes to get one transferred. 3 hours later, they told us it may not arrive until the next day if it even arrives at all. I reserved a vehicle through Thrifty with a written confirmation that my car would be held for up to 8 hours after my flight’s arrival, even in the case of delays. I added my flight information and completed online check-in five days in advance. Everything appeared in order—until I arrived at the Portland Airport rental counter shortly after midnight.
Despite Thrifty’s clear commitment, I was told by their employee that there were no cars available—not even in a different category. No help was offered, no alternatives were provided, and she simply told me to “try Dollar,” which is owned by the same parent company. The only vehicle left at Dollar cost more than twice what I had originally reserved—$1,560.29 vs. $760.91. I had no choice but to accept it or be stranded overnight and miss the wedding I flew to Oregon to attend. The counter was minutes from closing and there was no time to escalate or troubleshoot.
What’s worse is that Thrifty never disclosed that a “confirmed” reservation could be canceled due to availability. Their policy specifically implies the opposite. If I hadn’t followed their instructions and checked in early, or if I hadn’t had the means to cover an unexpected $800+ increase, I would have been left in a truly awful situation. This wasn’t a simple inconvenience—it was a serious failure to honor written commitments and borderline monopolistic given that they are owned by the same parent company. If Thrifty cannot guarantee reservations or support customers in urgent moments, they should not be in business.
