Deceptive business practices by advertising low rates and then tacking on fees when you use your own insurance 1999 a day or else you have to have $500,000 in coverage or they charge you. Terrible for the agents because you can tell they don’t agree with these practices. Did not rent the car but would like to warn other consumers. I found this rental on Expedia. It was supposed to be $100 for eight days as advertised but when I got there, it was closer to 480 and I walked away.

Just like a previous post, I too was asked for a $2000 security deposit. I pretty much said f off and went back to the airport to Enterprise and got a 3 day rental for $150. DO NOT GO to this thief! I'm assuming they need funds to cover other bills and I would then have to fight to get a refund for the next 6 months. Thankfully I booked thru Expedia and was issued a refund immediately. I did not even get a reply from the corporate Rent-A-Wreck office complaining so they must be ok with it.

I would give a 0 if it was an option. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! THEY WILL SCAM YOUR INSURANCE FOR DAMAGES!! This company will send off an outrageous amount for damages. If you look at the cars, they are all dinged up. They pocket the money and don't fix the cars. Hence the name, Rent-A-Wreck.

Stay far far away and never rent a car from them! The whole company is a scam from the top to the bottom, they get you in the door with a cheap offer only to hit you with every fee under the sun! They even have fees to use your own insurance, turn on the E-Zpass, to use the e-zpass, I wouldn't be suprised if they had a fee for reading this review

These people lied and stole money from me claiming that I didn't pay any tolls when I paid, didn't clean the car, scratched the hood when all of this was false and scammed me for the amount of $269.31 on 8/26/25. Never go to these thieves.

Atrocious. Incompetent, lengthy from baggage pick up to drive off was 90+ minutes--claim on their site is 5-10 minutes but actually minimum Mapquest time is 10 minutes. It t. Clerk was intrusive, insulting, and incompetent. Car is fine, but clerk and I were both upset that it took a long time to document the scrapes, scratches, and dings--She told me, "No, I'm not going to write that down" and that I just need to go. Even worse, she argues that their 9AM (!!!) office open time allows plenty of time for me to get to the airport for my 9:05AM boarding time, even suggesting that I drop off my [disabled] son early to check in my luggage so that I can go directly to security. Of course, the airports don't even work that way! Intrusive--asked me to what locations I would be driving (they have a 300-mi radius), but I feel asking me specific locales is an invasion of privacy.

I reserved a car with them in Newark NJ via Expedia. The pickup location printed on my reservation is 1142 Broad St Newark NJ 07114, near Newark Penn Station, where I got off the train. I took a Lyft ride to this location and it turned out to be a residential address; nothing is like a business office nor a RentAWreck booth. I called them up and was told that they had tried to contact me to tell me to go to a different location (I silent my phone on the train and napped during the 4 hour-ride trip.) They then told me to pay my rental car fees so that they would direct me to the new location. I checked my email and clicked on the link to view the invoice. The charge amount was different from what Expedia charged. They sent me another link, then another link, so on. They were all different from I booked with Expedia.
Every time, RentAWreck demanded my credit card info to pay first (I already paid the car booking with Expedia). And I was not comfortable to disclose my credit info for such a terrible experience, and I finally told them to forget it. I then managed myself to go to another car rental company locally and rent a car from that company in order to go to my hotel. It was a total waste of my times dealing with RentAWreck. They screwed up my travel plan by giving me a bogus car pickup location and perhaps wanted to steal my credit card info. Stay away from RentAWreck.

This specific Rent-A-Wreck is fraudulent. Do not rent!! Refunded my security deposit and then billed for for almost $1000 three weeks later with no email or phone call. Car was returned completely immaculate. Tried calling office and they claim you have to dispute via email. Did that 90 days ago. No response. Filed a claim with corporate and still dealing with this BS. These people are con artists in Orlando and will steal your money. Save yourself the giant headache that I'm dealing with and rent ANYWHERE else.

Horrible experience; worst car rental ever! I have done many car rentals before and never experienced a horror show like this. The company representative in Orlando kept us at the counter for over an hour, upselling some services. In order to get the car, we need to pay almost $3000 in addition to the money we already paid for the rent!! There was absolutely no information about these extra charges during online booking. The company tried to get an extra insurance, 29/ a day for the tolls (even though we were not going to the area with the tolls), etc..
Needless to say, adding $3000 to our rental was unacceptable, and we ended up canceling the entire booking and renting from another (more reliable) rental car company. If you do not want to be stuck (especially with the children) in a hot office for hours with a representative who is shamelessly upselling you unnecessary services (but as they say, you can't have a car without it), never consider this rental company.

Avoid at all costs. Despite showing proof of insurance and a chat transcript from my insurer confirming my coverage transfers to rentals, I was forced to pay a $20/day “admin fee” for declining their insurance. After paperwork, my kids and I sat in the lobby for over an hour with no communication—only to have an employee point to a car outside as if I should’ve known it was mine. The lobby felt unsafe, with women loitering who appeared to be sex workers, making things extremely uncomfortable.
No one inspected the car with me; it had many dings, and I noted all deep ones. On return, they demanded $500 for a tiny scuff—clearly there at pickup—that could be buffed out easily (photo of $500 “damage” attached). Predatory, unprofessional, and scammy. Never again. I encourage anyone else who has had similar experiences with this company’s predatory and unethical practices to share their story (Google, Yelp, BBB, Trustpilot, ConsumerAffairs, Ripoff Report, ComplaintsBoard, and social media), contact Rent-A-Wreck corporate in Maryland directly to let them know how severely this location is damaging their brand, and if you booked through a site like Expedia, also contact them to report that their system is listing a scam location.

I went to pick up my reserved mini van for 3 days at Orlando Airport location. When I booked it was $54 per day. When I was picking up they told you have to take toll package which was $45 a day. It was difficult pill to swallow but I was stuck so I said fine I will pay. I showed them insurance and declaration page then say said you have to pay $19 per day and after that they said because you don’t have $500k insurance so you have to pay $519 one time fee. Total came to be around $1000 for 3 day rental and one day rental was $54 a day. I yelled at them and asked me to lower down the voice.
How could somebody absorb this kind of scam. I refused to take the rental and instead I Uber next 3 days which cost me total $400 and I was staying in Davenport. Uber was a lot convenient as compared to driving. This is the worst rental company out there and that’s how they fish. They catch the customers with lower rates and they don’t charge at the point once you show up they slaughter you at the counter. I have never written any review for anything but stay away from these **. I have confirmed with other folks and they said this is their business model. I will report them to BBB and they I will be writing reviews everywhere.

If I could put 0 I would, I reserved thru Expedia-Travelocity when I got there they changed the rental fee from $19 to $31, I knew they will charge some fees..but changed all when I went to pick it up. The guy at the counter said it was cause I reserved thru online third party vendor and it was a voucher discount not a real agreement, that is incorrect I reserved and agreed to the fee that it was promoted for, and expedia even gave me additional fees due at tye desk. I have rented cars thru Expedia and others like Priceline it’s not a voucher it’s an online reservation like any other, even with the PR insurance at the most I was expecting total of $600 on average not almost 1k.
Then guy gives me a car dirty, every corner was dirty…when I said I wanted a clean car he started getting into an argument with me, made the comment you get what you pay for. I said almost 1k the least I expect a clean, in good condition economy car. I asked for the manager so they could clean it again…they did but it was still filthy. It was a horrible experience overall and as a ** visiting the island again it’s the worst experience ever. Customer Service was non existent…is embarrassing and very unprofessional.

I had a confirmed reservation at Rent-A-Wreck Tampa and the experience was unacceptable from start to finish. The front desk employee was openly unprofessional — he stayed on his phone throughout our interaction, refused to assist me, and ignored a customer service representative who tried to intervene on my behalf. I was denied the rental, despite arriving on time and having paid in advance.
The company has repeatedly refused to acknowledge photographic evidence I submitted — showing the employee on his phone while I stood there trying to be helped. They have not addressed the photo in any of their responses and never reviewed the security footage, which would have supported my claims. Instead, they accused me of making “unsound claims” and trying to exploit them for financial gain. I also verified with my bank that my security deposit was never processed. Yet Rent-A-Wreck continues to deflect, lie, and hide behind policy instead of addressing the actual issue: the unprofessional and disrespectful behavior of their employee.
Rent-A-Wreck failed to: Provide the service I paid for. Acknowledge or respond to submitted photographic evidence. Accept any accountability for the behavior of their staff. Issue a refund or reimbursement for alternate transportation. This company does not understand customer service, professionalism, or responsibility. I would never recommend them and will continue to report this incident publicly until they take accountability.

Hidden fees took my $68 rental invoice at time of booking to $197 with extra charges including an administration fee for having my own automobile insurance instead of using theirs! The young lady going over the extra charges had a bit of an attitude when I asked her to explain them. Also I had questions before we picked up car and was unable to get a phone number or person directly with the rental pick up place so that was frustrating.

Absolutely terrible experience with Rent-A-Wreck in Carolina, PR. I rented a car, returned it on time, clean, and with a full tank – yet months later, I’m still waiting for my deposit to be refunded. I’ve called customer service multiple times, and each time I get a different excuse or I’m told “it’s being processed.” It’s clear they have no intention of giving me my money back. This is dishonest and feels like outright theft. I would strongly advise anyone to avoid this company. If they can’t manage basic refund practices, what else are they cutting corners on? Total lack of professionalism and accountability. Do yourself a favor and rent elsewhere to avoid frustration and headaches.

I rented a car from Expedia website, paid in full including the rental insurance. (Extra) When I went to pick up car they said they didn’t take that insurance so I had to pay extra for that. Thought I was paying $200 deposit, this company ended up charging my credit card over and over for months after the rental. No way to reach them via phone (it’s a google number- no one answers). I sent emails describing the added charges $591 one month, $440 another month, AFTER I PAID IN FULL already on Expedia. This is a scam operation. I took pictures before and after no damage to the car. Hard to resolve an over billing issue with ZERO way to contact this place. SCAM 101 here.

I rented from an off site Tampa (4220 West Cayuga St) location through American Express Travel. It was a good price, I read all of the information online before committing. First, the dilapidated shuttle van was 25 minutes late. You cannot reach the site by phone (I tried)! It took almost 20 minutes to get to the location. It was in a poorly lit, unsafe neighborhood. This company strong arms renters into purchasing their extra insurance. It doesn't matter that you have full coverage and can prove it. The employee kept asking for my documents. As it turns out, they want you to show them your policy declarations. WHO/WHAT other car rentals ask for this???
They also force the toll package on renters, and threaten hefty fines if not purchased and a toll is incurred. I refused to rent the vehicle and pay the extra charges. I asked for a ride back to the Tampa airport terminal and was rudely refused. I had to take an Uber and go through the process of renting another vehicle at the terminal. Hopefully, American Express heeded my warning about this company and took them off their travel website. Needless to say, I do not recommend Rent-A-Wreck. I will NOT consider them as an option in the future!

Hi, On March 31, 2025, I rented a car from Orlando, Florida. At that time I was informed that I needed to have insurance from one of six different insurance companies or else I was required to purchase insurance through your company. I showed the agent two websites. The first website was Rent-A-Wreck's website, which stated that a customer needed to bring proof of their own insurance. I was then told that the Orlando website is what I needed to refer to. I then showed the agent the specific Orlando, Florida Rent-A-Wreck website. This website stated the same thing. The Orlando website address link is https://www.rentawreck.com/airport-mco-orlando.html. As you will see, it requires the customer to provide proof of their insurance policy.
After showing both the Rent-A-Wreck website and the specific Orlando, Florida location websites to the agent, I was still told that I had no other choice but to take the insurance. I also showed the agent my personal insurance policy that demonstrated I had insurance coverage. Since I could not get my money back, I had no other choice but to rent the vehicle.
I am now reviewing my credit card statement and see a charge of almost $600 in addition to the over $300 charge for renting the car on March 31, 2025. I was given an email address to send my complaint to, however, that email address doesn't exist. At this point I am extremely disappointed in this company and am doubtful I will hear a response from anyone.

The worst car rental experience ever. After calling them and being told one price to get there and told a completely different price which was $200 more than to be told the vehicle I reserved was mistakenly rented out and they don’t have any vehicles available at the moment but I could wait because there was a vehicle that was supposedly being brought back but unsure when it would arrive. The girl has ZERO customer service attitude. She was rude and acted as if I was bothering her even though they were at fault. Never got an apology or explanation how my reserved vehicle was able to be rented to someone else. Mind you I had to Lyft there then after all this Lyft back home. It was a horrible, horrible experience. I don’t wish on anyone. How they manage to stay in business is beyond me

Hidden fees nearly doubled the rates. With what I was charged. I could have gone with a more reputable company like enterprise or Alamo... If I could leave a one star for customer service I would.. And if I could leave 0 stars because there was no airport shuttle when I dropped off my car at 6 AM to catch a flight at 9 AM.... Had to get a taxi. That is not what the site said. I honestly picked Rent-A-Wreck for Its affordability and easy shuttle service from the Airport to-and-fro. But that was not true when I returned my car Sunday morning at 6 AM.

Should have checked here before I rented! I was extremely upset that I was forced to purchase their liability insurance. I have never had another rental car company need to review the specific limits of my policy and then tell me that because I didn't have the maximum value (100k - 300k) of liability insurance, I had to purchase theirs. And when I said I would simply increase my own policy amount, I was told it would have had to have been increased 3 days before. I didn't think to check the website until after I got back, but when I did, I didn't see it listed on the website policy list. In fact the website said nothing about requiring liability, only collision. I ended up having to pay more for the insurance than I did for the rental.

I waited a few days to fill this out in order to remove the emotion from it. This was without a doubt the worst vehicle rental experience I have ever had. Here is a brief summary: It took 2 hours and 45 minutes from the time we arrived to when we left Rent-A-Wreck with our vehicle. Long line to check in, long process where they try to upsell you on all kinds of cost-adds, and another long line to actually get the vehicle. The Expedia rental quote was $310.32 "including all mandatory taxes and fees". The total invoice came to $512.57 not including toll charges, which I did request.
Invoice line items include: Time, mileage, collision damage waiver (which I expressly did not request, as I have and pay for my own insurance, and was told "the car doesn't leave the lot without our insurance on it"), daily tolls (I said yes to this one), vehicle license fee, license recovery fee, customer facility charge, airport conc. recover fee (no idea what this is), state/local tax, municipal tax, road side assistance (which they said was "included"), glass and tire coverage, toll activation (they left that out of the conversation), and preparation fee (I need to pay for them to prepare their car for rental). The car was dirty, there was sticky stuff in the cup holders and other surfaces, and a light was on indicating oil change overdue. Scuffs and damage to the outside of the vehicle, which we took photos of.
Returning the car was much quicker but still markedly slower than any other company I've rented from. We drove the car into the return lane, waited while an employee came out and asked us if we were good, asked us for the paperwork, which we provided, then handed it to us and told us to bring it into the front desk to check the car in.
We waited in line to do this, at which point the manager asked us if the car was inspected. I did not know what she meant, she got annoyed and asked if one of her employees had looked at the car when we brought it in. We said yes. I asked about the aforementioned charges and was told they are all mandatory and there was nothing she could do. I sent five live chat requests through the Rent-A-Wreck website and never get connected with an agent. I called the help line three times, spent 40 minutes on hold, and was transferred back and forth between different departments without a solution. If you are visiting San Juan, I would strongly advise not to rent from Rent-A-Wreck, Priceless, Allied, or any of the other associated car rental companies on that strip. Stick with the agencies at the airport if at all possible.
