I have had this insurance for years and every claim I have submitted had been torture. They stall and don't try or follow up on getting paperwork and then they will shut down your case unless you realize it and intervene. Also if your pet had a preexisting condition they try and connect any future issue back to that one to avoid paying. They are a disgrace! Of course you can file an appeal assuming you and your vet have this kind of extra time on your hands. Don't waste your money. Heard great things about Healthy Paws so will be looking into them.

I just had a major claim denied for my 10 yr old lab. She had a skin tag on her eyelid that had previously fallen off but HAD NOT BEEN TREATED. The tag grew back and was irritating her eye. It was growing quickly and the Vet said it needed to come off ASAP or she would need to go to an expensive specialist. Trupanion denied the claim because she had always had the skin tag - even though it had never previously been a problem.

I read all of the reviews and conclude that I will keep my cats on the plan because I put them on when they were kittens. The happiest policy owners are those that signed their pets up as kittens or puppies. If your pet is older - beware - because there are too many ways for Trupanion to deny and you are wasting your money with all of the exclusions and pre-existing requirements and conditions.

I have submitted several claims and every time they find an excuse not to pay. On my letter of outcome they had the name of a vet's office that I have never even been to. I work in the veterinary industry and find their mistakes inexcusable. They kept asking for more history every time a claim is submitted even though they've already been sent EVERYTHING! I wonder if they lose the histories and need it again. I'm looking for another insurance company as soon as possible.

Bought insurance from Trupanion when my dog was 5 months old in May 2017. The premium quoted was $79.40. Within a year in May 2018, received an email saying due to veterinary equipments cost, the premium has updated to $100.74 per month. I have received an email today that for the love of our pet, the monthly premium has updated to $120.43 as of May 31, 2019. Basically there’s a ~30% increment the 1st year and ~20% the 2nd year. My dog has just turned 2 and have never submitted a claim. If I do the calculations right, I will be paying a couple hundred dollars when she’s 5. I’m looking for another insurance company since my dog is still young. Although they said they won’t increase the premium due to your pet’s age, they do raise the premium with other reasons.

When we got our dog, we figured we needed to do a bunch of things to take care of him. Getting insurance and signing him up for a vet seemed among the most important for his health. We did both but unfortunately we didn't think to wait to go to the vet for 30 days after signing up for the insurance. Trupanion has a 30 day sort of waiting period after you sign up. The vet told us that Hugo (our dog) had a heart problem, and eventually it turned out that we'd need him to have an $8000 surgery. Trupanion said that because we went during the 30-day waiting period they wouldn't cover it. Had we just waited for some days until the period ended, presumably they'd have covered it. The lesson I'd say, is if you're with Trupanion--they want you to avoid seeking medical care for your pet until their bureaucratic rules complete their term. On the other hand, they offered plenty of faux sympathy. If you value that be sure to make your monthly payments.

You can't speak to claim department and your answer is they are working on it. I have to now go back every month for check up for cancer. They will not cover those appts. I am deeply dissatisfied with the services Trupanion offers. I pay a monthly fee of 89 CAD just to cover every condition on my own. Recently my dog had to have a molar tooth extracted because it was broken. The procedure costed 1200 CAD, I covered the 700 CAD deductible, which I knew I have to cover, and they covered only 300 CAD. I recently discovered another fractured tooth and took my dog to the vet, we are trying to avoid extraction and got him antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. However, Trupanion does not want to cover because apparently it counts as a new conditions, which it does not, because he already had a broken tooth condition before.

It does not say that in their policy and now I am paying my monthly fees and on top of that I have to pay for the vet bill, which should be covered because I have already paid the deductible of that condition. I would most definitely not recommend Trupanion as you will end up paying for a service that almost never covers anything. Because apparently every single vet trip counts as a separate condition and you have to pay a deductible of 700 CAD first, which most likely you would never fulfill. Therefore, you are better off saving that 89 CAD every month and putting it towards vet bills.

We have had Trupanion for both our dog (8 years) and our cat (5 years). In January, our cat became severely ill, and a referral was made by our local vet to a specialty clinic. He was in Critical Care there for 5 days, had numerous ultrasounds, lab tests, a blood transfusion, a bone marrow biopsy, and had to have a feeding tube inserted. Yesterday, we had to take him back in for an infection at the feeding tube site. To date, Trupanion has been nothing but great! We have the 90/10 plan with a $100 deductible. Our bills to date have totaled almost $17K and Trupanion has paid 90% of those bills, excluding exams (yes, even including the ICU exams) and state taxes. We will have a big decision to make in the next day or so, but at least cost consideration will not have to play a role in whether to euthanize or not.

People complain about the cost. Yes, it's high (we pay $113/month for both our pets). No, they don't cover exams (which I wish they did, especially in emergency situations). No, they don't pay for preventive care (but our local vet offers those types of plans, so maybe people should check with their vets & see if such plans are available). But when the chips are down, they came through with prompt payment and kindness in dealing with us. I see a lot of bad reviews here, but I have to admit that I simply don't get it. If you have something catastrophic happen like we've had happen, you realize how worth it the insurance is.

So I've had this policy for a couple of years on my very healthy and very large dog. I got it because sometimes these big dogs have patella problems, hip, what have you. So he stepped on a thorn or something the other day and I took him in and the vet filed a claim, which was stupid on my part and theirs as well because now "limping" has been deemed a pre-existing condition. And heaven forbid, the dog needs knee surgery down the road and they have "limping" on his record. I asked the Trupanion clerk on the phone if it were possible that in the event the dog had a knee problem that they wouldn't cover it and she said, yes it was possible because perhaps it could be related to the aforementioned "limping." TOTAL SCAM.

Needless to say, I cancelled the reservation after thousands of dollars spent on an insurance that is pretty useless. If you are over 65, and you love your dog more than just about anyone, these predators could be out to get you. Remember, we - boomers are still the largest cohort and merchants will take advantage of you and rip you off if you let them. I have the sneaking suspicion that most of their "patients" belong to boomers. SO watch out for Trupanion and hang on to your wallet. Ana in Portland, Oregon.

I recently had my first significant claim when our Basset Hound developed glaucoma. Since we have $1000 deductible, I submitted all the receipts totally approximately $1250.00. I was told by their representative that evaluations and diagnostics were covered, but Trupanion disallowed all these claiming that these were merely "exams". My dog has had over 13 appointments to diagnosis his eyesight and adjust his medications, and Trupanion did not pay for a doctor's' appointment even when an ophthalmologist was involved!

The representative advised me to appeal and have the doctors code the visits as diagnostic evaluations. I did so and asked my veterinarian to send me an email as soon as this was faxed to Trupanion. I ACTUALLY RECEIVED TRUPANION'S DENIAL OF THE APPEAL BEFORE I RECEIVED OUR VET'S EMAIL. I called my vet to save the records and advised them to NEVER recommend Trupanion again. Trupanion took our $6000.00, but refused to pay for any diagnostic evaluations done in a doctor's office.

If I could give them 0 stars, I would. I purchased ins. for my cat in Nov. 2017. As of 1/1/2019 my premium almost doubled. Just prior to purchasing coverage she had a severe kidney issue which my vet pulled her through. Once I started filing claims however, they tied everything back to her kidney problem (even though it was no longer an issue). Once I was told that my vet couldn't prove that the issue WASN'T due to her kidneys. Sometimes they pay claims with no issues, but most of the time they are denied claiming the issue was due to kidney function, even though her kidneys are functioning perfectly.

During a routine exam last year my vet found a heart murmur. The first claim was paid. In Jan I took her in for a follow up exam (which was at no charge) and they denied the meds and test results stating that: 1) the meds and supplements she was given (which are supposed to be covered) "may help treat her chronic kidney disease" (which she does not have) and 2) the radiographs and x-rays are not labeled properly with her name so they maintain they are not for my cat. Not only was I in the room when the films were done but the lab report specifically cites tests for my cat by name.

The rules they cite in their denial, which they provided, do NOT specify that the names have to be visible, only that they have to be maintained at the vet's office. My vet has corresponded with them, I have called them repeatedly on this claim, but they still deny it. They will deny claims for any reason they can conjure up. I DO NOT recommend them. They said as a puppy the premiums would be much lower and we would not pay the premiums ever for an older dog and that they do not increase them because of age. We have a $250 deductible and Trupanion has us on a 90/10 payment. Well, our premiums have gone from $35 month to $87 per month in that period of time. So they are saying it is not because of age but because of the cost of care which is BS. The representative tried to spin the situation that it is a good deal with unexpected costs but I feel they are just taking advantage of all of us that love our pets. I signed up figuring what the heck, I had nothing to lose, but I had no confidence in them covering anything. Reading through the site's rules, normally there's an 18 month waiting period (meaning you aren't covered for something in that time), but signing up for my 30 day trial through the vet sponsorship, the website said there were no waiting periods in my case.

So I filed my claim after a ~4K bill for an MRI. A month later Trupanion says my claim is closed, they will pay nothing since this was a pre-existing condition. I got in contact with Trupanion immediately to figure out my options. I first spoke to Amber ** and she told me as long as my veterinarian approved the alternate care they would cover it. She was suppose to send over a pre-approval form but never attached it to the email. I then had to contact them three more times over the next week to try and get this pre-approval form. At that point I was so frustrated that I wanted to cancel my plan altogether just to be informed they can't cancel it on the weekend and someone will be in contact with me in 2-3 business days.

I'm sorry Monday is in one day, and I am unhappy with your service and now you're telling me I have to wait longer than Monday to cancel my plan? During all this, I signed up for Trupanion Pet Insurance -- since it was advertised everywhere in the vet's office -- in case anything further came up in the future that was unrelated since that would now be considered pre-existing, which is understandable. I signed up for their 30 day free trial. Well, something did actually come up unrelated. Within a week, after being on the mend and acting like himself again, he began to feel unwell, but this time with a round of totally different symptoms. I took him to the ER and he was diagnosed with anemia and neoplasia.

The ER vet assured me this was completely unrelated to the pancreatitis and was a totally different matter. I submitted the claim to Trupanion and it was denied. I appealed the denial and that was denied. They're stating that his anemia and neoplasia was related to his pancreatitis and gastroenteritis. One has nothing to do with the other and even the symptoms were totally different. I submitted all his medical papers and highlighted everything and even included a letter from the ER vet specifying all of this. Apparently, that doesn't matter to this company. After all this, I will probably have to take this issue to small claims court. I understand insurance fraud is an issue in companies, but this is a true and honest situation here with all the documents to back it up. I'm so heartbroken about my dog. Long and short of it I have been paying out $70 a month for 3 years. I ran into a situation where my dog had 3 tumors. One of which was biopsied Round cell and the Vet advised that I have them removed because my dog could have Cancer. I called and every time you call to speak with insurance you speak to someone different. None of their employees have extension numbers and their automated emails come back constantly. Finding a human on the other end to help you is nearly impossible. I spoke with two supervisors and 5 different reps for the company. All of them acted all kind and said the claim would be pre approved and would go through. Well it did not.

They are claiming that my dog had a preexisting anxiety issue, so therefore they can’t cover the ** that Vets use for any Pet when they have surgery. They also said that it was in their policy that I have to pay a deductible for every tumor as if they are separate issues. All the tumors are different types and unless my vet can prove otherwise then they won’t cover 90% as promised. They also stare even if I do know the types and they are the same that I still have to pay a deductible for each tumor. This is insane.

They just want your $$ and when you are in distress with your pet and they fail to come through they are worthless. I am not happy with %50 coverage when they have said 90% in their ads. Might I add they sent me a new policy stating I had to renew it or lose coverage when it wasn’t due to be renewed. Yet they determine when they get to rewrite their own policy in order to manipulate how much $$ they will cover for your pet. If you have faced similar issues send me an email because I am considering a class action lawsuit. This company shouldn’t exist in my opinion. SAVE YOUR $$$ because in the end they will say one of the following: It’s preexisting. It’s not covered in their policy or somehow they will change their policy. You didn’t take care of your dog properly so they denied the claim. Your Vet didn’t provide medical paperwork so they deny your claim. Basically for any reason they will either half ** cover you or deny you.

This company was recommended by my former Vet All Pet's in Nashua, NH. and if there is absolutely any mention of anything in your pets record before you sign up it will not be covered. My vet told me about a year back or so to make sure you brush your dog's teeth because she could get gum disease. Well they put in my record that my dog had level one gum disease so when I came back with a request of course I was denied coverage. So I went to cancel this policy and they offered me a "Paw Print" or whatever they call it where do a complete history on your dog to see if there is any other issues that may not be covered in the future and this was free of charge so I agreed.

Two months goes by and nothing from Trupanion?? I called and they stated to me well one hospital never responded so we suspended the research. No phone call, no email or communication but they made sure they received their $79.00 per month for those two months. There are many companies out there. Make sure you do your research. I wish I would have done my research and homework before I signed up with them.

After meeting my deductible, Trupanion paid 90% (minus the exam fees, which I knew wasn't covered) of ALL cost associated with his condition for the next 4 years. These cost included treatment by family vet as well as allergy specialists, ALL treatments, ALL medications, ALL Skin shampoos, ALL testing, ALL hospital stays. I couldn't have given my dog the care he had if it wasn't for Trupanion. I am truly appreciative of the service they provided from the wonderful customer representatives to the payout of claims. My advice to you is stay away from Trupanion... I have been paying into them since 2014, I made no claims. When I first got the insurance there was a 3 month waiting period and they asked for all the records available on my little dog, I provided them all of the records... In December my Therapy Dog was hospitalized for seizures due to tick meds and rabies shot, I paid the hospital and put in for the payment of the hospitalization, it took them forever to pay AND THEY REQUESTED ALL THE SAME RECORDS AGAIN.

I recently put in for meds which are supposed to be covered, mind you just MEDS, so guess what they AGAIN ASK FOR ALL THE SAME RECORDS. 1165 PAGES WERE FAXED TO THEM, now they are telling me they don't cover manicures... I did not put in for a manicure. I only put in for meds... Don't waste your money. The aggravation alone isn't worth it. I would not mind but the salespeople did such a good job selling Marty ** and Michelle ** that I believed them and bought the insurance right away WITHOUT DOING AN RESEARCH, not only that but I foolishly recommended several friends who purchased the insurance, now I am going to look like an idiot.

Now I am stuck, my little dog is 11 now and she has a couple of issues. I am sure I am paying into Trupanion for absolutely nothing so they can look for "any" reason not to pay. They are responding to me for things I never put in for. They are joke a very bad joke. So discouraged and disappointed. PLEASE IF YOU LOVE YOUR DOG OR CAT STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM TRUPANION.

After getting my pet at a shelter I received a voucher for a free month of insurance with this company on August 18th. I "activated" his voucher for the free coverage (yet I never received an email or anything of the sort with a policy number). Fast forward to August 25th, I took him into the vet for an unexpected visit to have his eye looked at. I paid out of pocket due to not receiving a policy number from them from the voucher I "activated". I "officially" enrolled him with Trupanion about on the 29th of August.

Fast forward another month. I had to make another unexpected vet visit for the same problem previously. Since I had his "official" policy number from his enrollment - I gave it to the vet to submit claims totaling over $400. Trupanion declined EVERY SINGLE CLAIM! I called their customer service line to speak with someone on why none of these are covered. Well - according to them my voucher was never "activated" and the claims are now considered a "pre-existing condition", which they do not cover. I gave the customer care rep the voucher code I used for his free month. The customer care rep said she would speak to a manager to see if they can do anything regarding this matter.

4 days later, I get an email from the Customer Care manager saying there is nothing they can do and any further treatment for his issue will not be covered due to it being before his "official" enrollment date. SO basically I am paying them $50/mo. for nothing?! Needless to say I am cancelling them IMMEDIATELY. I would never recommend them to ANYONE EVER! Seems like they are just like every other insurance company, they want you to pay them but don't want to pay anything for you! STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!

Do not insure with these people. Expensive - but they deny every claim. They will look for any little loophole or hyper technical reading of the policy, in order to deny the claim. Sometimes, they will grant the claim and apply it to the deductible, then once you exceed the deductible, they will deny the claim for the very same condition. I have an entire stack of denials, most all of them inconsistent. They then make you go through an Appeals process, which is just a front for another "sorry, denied" email.

They also pepper you with repeated requests for the same information, over and over and over - and send emails that state that the "claim will be closed" because of "insufficient" information, even when you have responded fully with all applicable medical records. All our pets are rescue pets. They deserve better than to be insured by a company, the sole purpose of which is to take your premiums and deny your claims. Shame on Trupanion. There is a special place in purgatory for companies like this - shame shame shame. Avoid at all costs. Do not use.

3 months later, dog gets conjunctivitis and a swollen eye, with a slight infection. Take him to the vet for treatment. Call Trupanion. No coverage! Oh... on top of that, exam fees, x-rays, sick visits, shots, emergency visits, nothing that helps the vet determine the illness is covered. This company scams people. I'm a believer in insurance as a method of sharing genuine risks across many people. Providing abuse is kept under control, insurance works. I am, however, very disappointed with Trupanion. My dog ate rat poison from a neighbor's yard and we rushed him to hospital. My Trupanion file says the claim was "accepted." Hooray. But does that mean they fulfilled their role of shared risk? No. They paid nothing because more than half the money I paid the hospital was determined to be an "examination." The other half was the deductible. The deductible I have no issue with (part of the shared risk I'm prepared to accept). But the "examination"? I brought my dog to the pet's equivalent of an emergency room.

This suggests that every time you take your pet to a hospital or clinic or vet, not only do you have to pay the deductible, but you also have to pay for an "examination," which effectively doubles your deductible. This is a much larger deductible than their feel-good/pet-friendly advertising suggests. I'm disappointed and irritated at this bit of trickery (in my opinion), and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the company. I believe that Trupanion and their resellers and supporters (including vets and animal hospitals) should make this double-the-cost-deductible very clear to their customers... before they buy into the product.

I have 18 months of policy coverage for my dog, in good standing. Then she had a cancer diagnosis with $2400 in treatment. My policy has $1000 deductible and 10% co-pay. Trupanion adjusters reimbursed me just $670. Where's the rest? Turns out one can interpret "treatment" and "examination" in whichever way suits the company. "Examinations" are excluded from the policy. So unless your vet line items separately things like: "massaged exterior of tumor to diagnose size," and "restrained dog in calm position to perform lab sampling" etc... then Trupanion insists all of those actions are part of an "examination" which has nothing to do with treating your pet's condition.

The policy documents are written to be intentionally vague. I requested a contract document with definition of each of these terms and was denied it. Bottom line -- you should expect this policy to cover diagnostics, labs, surgeries. And not to cover anything else that your veterinarian actually does. Then you can do the math on whether it's worth it -- $1000/year for coverage that winds up covering about 25% of real costs for treatment, on a per-diagnosis basis. Meaning, you'd have to have about a minimum $5000 vet expense, for one single emergency or injury, every other year in order to break even.

The eye drops worked for about a week. Next week she started scratching her eye a lot. I took her to the vet on 8/30. Vet gave me eye creams for dog see if they worked. 9-6 went back for recheck. He said eye not getting better. Had me schedule another appointment on 9-16. At that time he said she needs surgery asap. She has developed an ulcer cornea.

Sent claims in to Trupanion. They denied it saying that this happened prior to the 30 day waiting period. It had been almost 60 days. Then vet sent them a letter explaining this is not a pre existing injury. They said letter from him means nothing and they still maintain this is pre existing and will not pay anything. So I researched on internet and they have been doing this to a lot of their customers. So they are just scamming people out of their money.

On the day I rescued him he was in an accident and I didn't find out until $2,000 later that the policy doesn't cover anything until the day AFTER it's activated. Nothing in any of the material they made available said this. I searched high and low for a document outlining actual coverage and exceptions and I could never find one. I was never sent one and it was not available on their website. Not only do they not cover anything on the day you create your policy, but I also discovered they do not cover exams (a very huge thing to not cover!), X-rays, administrative fees, and a lot of very basic things that I would expect insurance to cover.

Yes, their customer service is overly friendly, I'll give them that. But having a peppy, happy voice while they tell you nothing is covered doesn't make it any better. Honestly, save your money. Unless you've had your animal for at least 18 months, they have a spotless record so far, and your vet charges almost nothing for exams, you'll end up paying almost everything out of pocket. Well we were blessed with a puppy this past October and we knew immediately that we would get pet insurance for her. I did a lot of research and we decided on Trupanion for our Border Collie (Penny). I really liked what I read about them and if I’m going to be complaining honest, I had a good vibe or gut feeling about them.

Fast forward to this past month and poor Penny was really sick. She was incredibly lethargic and would not eat at all. In a matter of days she lost three pounds and I had to carry her to go pee outside. I lost it! My husband and I love her so much. Needless to say, we were incredibly worried and we rushed her to our Vet. After spending just under $1000 on diagnostics/medications I am happy to say Penny is on the mend! She has gained a pound and a half and is eating properly again. We are not exactly sure what the issue was with Penny but it was very scary and the last thing you want to do is stress about money at that time!

The process to file a claim was very simple and more than that, they were incredibly sweet and professional when I had the occasion to speak with them over the phone. I had the pleasure of talking to Carmen and I hope for your sake if you are a customer you have the pleasure of talking to her! Your dog is hit by a car. You take him to the emergency room, it's a covered injury and you have pet insurance. The deductible on your insurance is $100 and 90% paid. That's what you have been paying, so that's what you think is the coverage. WRONG. Trupanion won't cover the veterinarian to examine your dog. Your dog can't be treated without being examined. Then they won't cover the surgeon to review the Xrays. The surgeon can't operate on your dog without reviewing the Xrays. So the $100 deductible was NEVER going to be the deductible because many of the services REQUIRED to treat your pet aren't covered by the insurance. And Trupanion not being a reputable company, they don't disclose this when you sign up and pay the expensive premiums. It's in the fine print most of us don't read. Read the other negative reviews before signing up for Trupanion, I sure wish I had read them.

Our cat is prone to upper respiratory infections. Our vet wanted to do some testing to rule out any illnesses that cause these infections. She said that it's perfectly plausible that she's perfectly healthy and simply prone to URIs because of her breed (she's a mixed rescue and we don't know exactly what kind of breeds are "in her", so it's reasonable to believe that she's simply got a breed that is prone to breathing issues) but she wanted to do some testing to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with her.

Trupanion is not going to cover any of the testing (suggested by our vet was an endoscopy and a chest xray) and also won't cover treatment for any further Upper Respiratory Infections. Somehow being prone to certain types of infections (that occur every few months) is considered a "pre existing condition". Our rate was around $50 and every time our cat is sick, our vet charges around $100 for the exam and medication. And let's not forget that Trupanion DOES NOT cover ANY KIND of examination, so essentially, all they cover is the $50 for medication. Which means in order for this insurance to be profitable for us, our cat would have to have an URI every month. Which...she doesn't. It's more of a semi-annual thing.

More important they claim the dog had a pre-existing condition 18 month prior to obtaining a policy with them. My dog wasn't born 18 months prior to obtaining policy. I hired the best animal litigation lawyer could find and she's in the process of suing them. It's not worth the headache dealing with Trupanion!

I have had many occasions to use my insurance and they have always come through. Most recently, my emergency bill was quite large. The claim was sent, reviewed and I was reimbursed quickly. Even the follow-up visit reimbursement is quick. In addition, several of the staff even sent a get well card to my pup - I was impressed with their kindness. Trupanion provides a client centric service model, compassion, care and ability to relate to people as pet owners with exceptional consistency! You're going to read good and bad reviews. Here's something to consider... Not everyone understands how insurance works. Some people fail at reading and understanding the terms of their coverage. Some simply ignore or choose not to read or understand the terms. Some people try to defraud insurance companies. Insurance companies review medical records to verify compliance with their coverage terms. Insurance does not mean an owner is absolved of all financial responsibility for their pets care. Ask your insurance company how vet billing works and how it affects your coverage.

When you're dealing with your family (Pet) it's important to pay attention and not blindly make uninformed choices. I invested in Insurance for Teddy because I care about him. I paid for everything out of pocket until he was hit by a car and had potentially life threatening injuries. His injuries quickly became very expensive and were certainly not common. I immediately contacted Trupanion to inform them of the accident and got Teddy to the vet hospital as fast as I could.

The metrics to employ when considering a claim is: "Is this problem potentially life threatening?" and "Does this problem potentially cause severe quality of life issues." Pet insurance is not like human health insurance. It's meant for bad to worse case scenario situations. Don't make the mistake of confusing human & pet insurance. You're responsible for your friend whether you have insurance or not. Trupanion is an excellent insurance provider. Some may disagree, maybe they failed to understand the companies policies. And, or, the general premise behind the services they signed up for.

Teddy, my cat, was severely injured with multiple injuries when he was hit by a car. These injuries were potentially life threatening and this is when Trupanion kicked in and have championed Teddy's recovery from the start. The amount of coverage Teddy has received along with support from staff has been nothing

short of amazing so far. Teddy has a specialist for his broken teeth, dislocated and fractured jaw, dislocated leg, and a surgeon for the removal of one of his eyes. It has been heart wrenching for me to have to see him go through this but I know he will get better and he knows that I love him.

This insurance company has been supportive with us and have fulfilled their obligations, according to their own policies, without hesitation or delay. Some of you may accuse me of being a shill for the company. I can't stop you from saying it. But you're only deluding yourself and doing a disservice to those seeking an informed review. If you're buying a product or service understand what you're buying or paying for before you do. Most Veterinarians in Toronto seem to have a really good opinion of this company and I can understand why they do. They act quickly and make informed decisions based on all available information. Teddy and I have had a really good experience with Trupanion. I have attached a picture of Teddy a day after he got to the hospital.

I don't get these reviews, I couldn't live without Trupanion. They have been so great through the dozens of claims I have had for different dogs. And yes, I have had a claim denied that I am currently appealing but it was a fair reason of a misunderstanding and Trupanion makes appeals super easy if the vet is willing to correct. Mostly though they have paid me right back for many surgeries, and illnesses by older dogs developed. Get the insurance right away when your pup is young so it is cheaper. Vets are out of control with their prices! You go in for a simple procedure and they want to do every test possible so it is thousands. A surgery can cost on average 5k-20k. It is a huge peace of mind to know Trupanion has your back.

I also have care credit which helps and Trupanion can preapprove a payment or refund you into your checking on most cases within a week or less! You can always get a rep on the phone and they are so pleasant to speak with every time. They are similar to Discover card's customer service where they take the time and really do actually care to keep the customer happy unlike some other companies where you know it will be super stressful to get a rep and then you are transferred non stop and frustrated. I have never experienced this in the 30 plus times I have called Trupanion. Actually look forward to communicating with them. I have a biz also and I know people just love complaining when unhappy and the happy don't do much which is why I am leaving such a long review. :)

When I first signed up for Trupanion for my two dogs, their policy stated that insurance premiums would never go up more than 20%. In the last few years they have raised our premium almost 25% each year even though we have been with them for 5 years and haven't been making huge claims. In fact, we never go over how much we pay them every year. On their website, they state "Trupanion is one of the only pet health insurance plans that does not have automatic rate increases as your pet ages - some companies have guaranteed annual increases of up to 18%!" THIS IS A LIE! They raise it more than other insurance companies.

Look it up yourself. They mislead you, the insurance premiums should be enforced more. They are a money hungry business, and they don't care about your pet's health. Today, I called to cancel, and I told them that I would be paying more insurance for my two dogs than my husband and I's insurance. They said "Oh, well pets are having the same procedures as humans nowadays so we have to raise premiums." This is completely a lie in a sense.

For my own personal health insurance, I pay less than I do for my dogs, and I've had surgery and my insurance company pays 100% of the bill. Surgery for dogs is not as expensive as it is for a human, let's be real. Trupanion has no cap on how much they can raise their premium each year. So they could potentially raise it however much they like. I would highly advise no one to get an insurance policy with this company.

My experience with Trupanion has been quite different from many of the reviewers on this site. We got insurance for our dog when he was just a few months old. He's now almost 7 years old. Our deductible per condition is $200, with Trupanion paying 90% of care costs after the deductible is met, and our monthly premium is ~$45.

During our ~6-7 years with the company, we have filed claims on two conditions: the first to do with a limping issue (a chronic condition for the past several years), the second with a broken tooth. In both cases, Trupanion has responded quickly to our claims and interpreted our invoices fairly, even generously. (I recently called them because I thought they were paying us *too* much for a claim, but their rep explained how they had intentionally interpreted the claim to our advantage.) My experiences with customer service reps have also been very positive — when our dog was suffering from his limp and we were worried he would need surgery, one phone rep even sent him a care package.

Some things for potential consumers to note: 1) Trupanion's business model favors customers who enroll their pets in puppyhood, since preexisting conditions are not covered. We are fortunate because our vet urged us to sign up when our dog was very young. Our experience may be less positive had we signed him up later. 2) They also charge more for coverage of certain issues common to your dog's breed. For example, our monthly premium would be $35 ($10 less), but it also includes coverage for hip issues common to my dog's breed.

    3) Their deductibles apply to each specific condition, for the life of your pet, rather than to a given calendar year. This means that each new condition you claim gets its own deductible, but that once that deductible is met, they will pay 90% (or whatever % you've chosen in your plan) of treatment for that condition for the rest of your pet's life. This might hurt folks whose animals suffer many one-time conditions, but it's helpful for chronic conditions. 4) Office visit/consultation fees are not covered, nor is preventative care.

Of these four things, the only one that wasn't made clear to me before I signed up for the insurance was that office visit fees weren't covered. (And by this I mean the base fee you are charged for the exam — services tests administered *during* the exam, such as blood tests & X-rays, have in our experience been covered.) The other three conditions may or may not be ideal, but they were clear to me when I signed up. So the model has pros and cons, but, in our experiences thus far, Trupanion's service has met, and sometimes exceeded, our expectations, based upon what we knew about it when we signed up.

I saw some of these reviews and I don’t understand how some people could have had such a bad experience. I have had nothing but good experiences with them and I’ve had them for almost 9 years. I pay about $50 a month to include both of my dogs, the policy was bought when they were tiny puppies. Let me tell you, there were times I thought about canceling esp when I hit money trouble a few years ago for 3 or 4 years, but I never did. Why? Because when my Maggie was little I got her insured and less than a year later, she was diagnosed with entropion and so even though I’d only paid in about $500 at that point, they fully reimbursed me (at their 90% terms) about $1700 with NO trouble. Then, for many years, I didn’t have to claim against my policy.

Flash forward to a month ago when Maggie was diagnosed with a ruptured disk requiring an emergency MRI and surgery as well as them discovering she has IVDD. Not only did Trupanion pay according to their terms no problem, they made arrangements with the hospital to pay directly to them even though they weren’t a Trupanion Express location, approving my claim as an emergency within TEN MINUTES! That surgery and her aftercare were roughly $6000 which is basically everything I’ve paid over the years plus some more but I never would have had the discipline to save that on my own and I didn’t have the cash upfront to cover it. Trupanion literally saved my dog’s life. Not to mention every single time I call, I get someone knowledgeable and concise, as well as very friendly, that explains things in an easy to understand way. I wish MY own health insurance provider were as easy to deal with and understand as Trupanion has been for my dogs.

We bought Trupanion Pet Insurance for our first rescue Dachshund several years ago. Soon after acquiring her, we began to suspect that she was deaf which was confirmed by a specialist. We submitted a claim for the tests and they were denied as a pre-existing condition. At the time we went along with the declination because it was clear that unbeknownst to us, she had been deaf when we acquired her. We acquired a second rescue Dachshund in the very last stages of being cured of heart worms in September 2017. We covered her under our Trupanion policy in mid October. On October 31 she appeared nauseated and we took her to our vet who gave her a shot for nausea. That reoccurred a number of times over several months. During that time she was placed on special diets and the vet made notes about several possible diagnoses she was concerned about.

More recently she began having diarrhea and then bloody diarrhea so we took her to a specialist who performed a number of expensive tests. We submitted all of our bills as a claim and Trupanion converted them nine different claims. Two days later we received nine declinations all stating pre-existing condition as the reason. Trupanion requested all medical records as far back as we had them from every vet that had ever treated our pet. Within 2 days they denied every single claim based on the fact that she had been nauseated and refused eat in mid October, they further noted that she had been placed on a special diet and that the doctor was concerned about the possibility of the beginnings of pancreatitis. Their declinations made it clear that their methodology is to review the entire history of the pet and if they can find anything which can possibly be related to the current problem, then they deny the claim as a pre-existing condition.

They also said that they do not pay for examinations at anytime for any reason. Needless to say we were not happy and have canceled our policy. We are now having our bank transfer the $135 a month we were paying for our premium to a separate account - in essence setting up our own insurance fund. The premiums we wasted paying Trupanion would have covered our dogs' medical expenses. We wish we had read the reviews from ConsumerAffairs.com prior to purchasing Trupanion Pet Insurance. I think you’d only be safe if you purchase a new puppy and cover it immediately. Any adult rescue dog will almost certainly have exhibited symptoms over its life which could lead to a declination based on a pre-existing condition. Don’t waste your money.

This is my honest review and please read till the end! I actually had a great experience with Trupanion. My premiums did go up, so I decided to stick with a higher deductible ($1000). In September of last year my dog started getting really lethargic, so I brought him to the local hospital where they said he had Pancreatitis. He stayed 2 nights and the bill was roughly $800. From there he wasn't getting better, so I drove him up to a larger clinic where my friend works and who I trust dearly. There they did numerous tests and had him there for about a week and still no progress or diagnosis.

Finally, we went to the ultimate of places and by then it was too late. He got 3 blood transfusions there, and countless tests. It was horrible. There was still no diagnosis or chance of him getting better. By the end we had to put him down and his stool was black blood. My final bill was around $18,000 - and I paid roughly $3000 out of pocket for the deductible, travel, cremation, everything else. Trupanion even called during to see how I was doing emotionally. They were honestly really great. However, here is what I want to emphasize - I WOULD NOT DO THIS AGAIN! Even though I had all the care in the world, it didn't matter. My little guy should have died at home, comfortable. He was probably stressed the whole time, and poked and prodded for days. And for what?

At the time I was glad that I could give him all the best medical help, but it still didn't matter. If anything, he deteriorated worse. It was so bad that he didn't even have an immune system to leave the hospital. This dog was my world and I did anything and everything for it, but now I would NEVER put a dog through this again. Here is what I am doing with my current pup: I am NOT vaccinating, I am feeding RAW food, and I am NOT neutering him. I can trace most, if not all of my dog's issues back to his rabies vaccines. He was getting fat lumps, and could never lose weight (found out in the end his liver and spleen were huge). Even though previous blood tests always came back normal. It didn't matter.

Treat your dogs well!!! Stop giving into vets and social stigma around what you "should" be doing. Do what YOU feel is best for your dog, and if you notice a reaction from previous vaccines - don't give anymore, or do titers. That dog was my world, and I still miss him every day. However, please inform yourself and don't be so quick to run to the vet, as it may be the thing that kills them quicker. Trupanion was fantastic, but I'm never putting myself or another dog through any of that again. When you know better, you do better.

We purchased Trupanion Pet Insurance after my puppy’s very first visit to his Vet on June 2017. After a couple of months we noticed him limping while walking. We brought him back to see the vet in Sept 2017. X-rays were done and the results showed that he was diagnosed with bilateral ankle dysplasia and needed surgery. Assured by our Vet that insurance would cover the expense, we went ahead with surgery only to find it WAS NOT COVERED. After contacting Trupanion they informed me that due to my Vet’s medical notes about my dog seen on Sept. 2017 stating “limping for ‘several’ months” that this was a pre-existing condition and therefore did not meet their policy of coverage. His Vet wrote a letter to appeal and had called personally and spoke with Christin in the Appeal Dept. informing them that it was her mistake and sent all other exams indicating no existing of limping.

We in fact purchased this insurance before my dog exhibited any signs of limping. Both his vet and I have been maintaining communication with Trupanion with hopes of getting our case reappealed. It has now been several months and I have had no luck. I am heartbroken as my dog’s surgery was uneventful. His rehab vet recommended therapy, injections and a possibility of another surgery that will have to come out of our pocket.

After 4-5 days the dog was doing much better and has been fine since. When I filed with the insurance to cover the tests, the insurance didn't look at it like it was an acute illness or potential blockage. They denied the claims saying the dog has a preexisting condition because he got sick and threw up once when he was 2 months old and he eats digestive health food because of soft stools. We appealed and the vet even called the insurance to say this is ridiculous. The insurance denied the appeal also. When I decided to sign up my new puppies they justified their inflated premiums to me by stating they cover more, ease of filing claims and most importantly that just about everything is covered at 90%. This is extremely false. They also told me as they were taking my money that my puppies would have coverage once payment was received. They took my payment immediately and it was processed over the phone. I signed my two puppies up for what I thought would be superior coverage on 11/16. Have been a great customer diligently paying my highly inflated premiums. Never used the insurance or filed a claim until 2/18 when one of my puppies needed medical care. The claim was for $1K approximately. I was misled by this company as I was that once my $200 deductible was met coverage would be at 90%. Not true!

All claims have been denied which appears to be their standard operating procedure. Deny everything and force the consumer to fight for their rightful reimbursements! I called today and escalated my claims to a manager. All calls are tape recorded so kindly asked them to pull the tapes and listen to the original conversation when I was sold. So that they could hear for themselves and for evidence that I was clearly outright lied to when signing my two puppies up for their health insurance.

Buyer beware of this unscrupulous company. Not worth the inflated cost of their premiums. They lie and mislead upon signing and pull the bait and switch. No ease in filing claims as they deny all as first line of defense. I made my vet aware of this as they have their brochures in their office. I highly suspect getting some kickback in hindsight. Consumers there are lower cost carriers available that are ethical as I have since learned. However Trupanion is not one of them. This company has my lowest rating I can give on this platform.

Then the email automatically sent pressures you to sign on within 24 hours or lose the free trial. So we looked at the pamphlet and website. When you sign on THEY DO NOT COVER ANYTHING FOR 30 DAYS STATING IF YOU NEED TO BE SEEN IT MUST HAVE BEEN "PRE-EXISTING CONDITION(S)!" So there is no free 30 day trial! Look at the reviews - 1 (out of 5) given over and over as the company denies every claim as 'pre-existing'. This company is a scam artist. The worst kind of insurance fraud. Let me begin how this company works. First they collect your money every month for $80.00. HOWEVER, THEY DO NOT PROVIDE ANY MAJOR COVERAGE WHAT SO EVER. Let me begin my case. I had to get dental cleaning done for my dog which is a routine work at Banfield Hospital. Unfortunately, my dog was not able to have this procedure to take place due to abnormal blood work (thrombocytopenia). Which was also recognized procedure by Trupanion on 6/28/17. My situation was not because of negligence. It was the prognosis of the blood work.

Now, my pet needs to have dental operation procedure because she has to have some of her teeth removed going forward. When I did submit the claim approval paperwork to Trupanion, in return they claimed that this is a pre-existing situation which is not correct because my dog was not able to have cleaning done due to having abnormal blood cells and in which even Trupanion recognized this situation few months ago. I had to wait until my dog's blood work to go back to normal. At same token, her dental situation got worst due to this waiting even how careful I was to use several procedure and cleaning solutions to keep in at minimum level for this waiting period.

The bottom line is when I asked for Trupanion to provide attention to cover for my dog's procedure. THEY DID NOT CARE. Instead they pushed me into another paperwork trail of bureaucracy so that in the end I can give up on it. If you care about your pet their well being you should avoid this company at all cost. After all they are very good at collecting your money but, they do not care about your pet or your overall situation... Go figure. Pet insurance has no difference than USA health insurance policy and limitations to make it worst for your well being in the long run!

I have found that on the whole if they pay a claim they remove most of the charges for one reason or another. They even consider a specialist's consult and office visit. They look for a needle in the haystack to deny allowing a claim or paying very little. My feeling is they lied to me to get me to switch making me believe they would cover the claims so much better than my previous insurance company. They made it seem worth their unlimited coverage & willingness to pay most claims to pay them twice as much monthly. I am now trapped. I gave up a lot of pre-existing conditions to move two dogs to their program. They then doubled their monthly fees. I am paying over $200 a month for 2 dogs and getting very little. My next dogs will NOT be under Trupanion.

Trupanion never paid a penny for my dog. They interpreted "allergy" from "dirty ears" and ongoing ear infection, which is the reason that they won't cover the actual diagnosed allergy this time. It is as if they go out of their way to avoid paying. Out of 10 claims I have submitted, none got approved. My vet helped me appeal two claims because even the hospitals felt the insurance was being unfair. Appealing worked, but it certainly did not prevent Trupanion to call it an "isolated appeal" that does not mean anything to future related claims.

However in the meantime they revised their policy and never told us so they denied the claim. They told us after our other dog had a ACL tear in his back leg. As long as it was not the same leg it would be covered, so because of them not covering the surgery for the spleen we ask them if our other dog would be covered if he tore his ACL in the other leg (not that she did. We just wanted to know how much they revised). They said no because even if it's the other leg it's an ongoing issue. They are a rip off, WE RECORDED WHAT THE MAN TOLD US WHEN WE GOT THE INSURANCE and he said any ongoing thing that the dogs have before we got the insurance as long as it was not in the same spot or has nothing to do with what they have now will be covered. Read the terms clearly and try to understand the purpose of this insurance: It is to avoid paying coverage for situations that are reasonably expected could occur. Trupanion provides coverage for pet boarding IF you are hospitalized for more than 4 days. I had hip replacement surgery five days ago and came home for recuperation two days after surgery. Trupanion would not cover my pet boarding because it was not more than 4 days' hospitalization. These days, patients and hospitals make every effort to get a patient home as soon as possible. THIS IS NOT THE SET OF TERMS A DECENT INSURANCE PLAN WOULD COVER AND FOR WHICH I PAY $88.00 PER M0NTH. Trupanion, don't represent this as the coverage it isn't. It looks like you discovered that statistics show most hospitalizations are 3 days or fewer and so your chance of having to pay out are essentially nil.

Went home, enrolled with Trupanion under their promotional deal offered to me by my veterinarian, which waived the initial registration fee and effectively enrolled my pup immediately. Approximately 6-8 hours later, I had to rush my pup to emergency vet services because he went into respiratory distress and had vomited. He was so sick, he was hospitalized overnight. I come to find out that my pup had developed pneumonia from two infections, Bortadella (even though he has received the vaccination) and Respiratory Corona Virus. The next day, $2,300 later and with a bag full of medicine I was allowed to take my pup back home. I started the claim process with Trupanion.

Three weeks later, after having heard nothing. I find out that the claim had been denied because the dog "possessed symptoms before he was enrolled." When I was in the emergency room with the vet, and asked if I had noticed anything out of the ordinary prior to that evening, I had said that I had noticed that he had some coughing the day before. That was the basis for Trupanion's complete denial of my claim. In a nutshell, I was denied any coverage at all (even though he was examined by my veterinarian just hours before and given a clean bill of health), my hindsight apparently superseded that a licensed veterinarian, who had found nothing unusual at all. For Trupanion to deny me any coverage at all, when a veterinarian didn't even notice that my pup was sick and based on my comment that the day before I noticed that he had coughed is completely underhanded.

I am not a doctor of veterinary medicine. I had no reason to even think that there was anything really wrong with my pup before I brought him in for his physical. I hadn't even mentioned the coughing because it seemed so innocuous that I was never concerned. The vet even put a stethoscope to my dog's chest for breathing and heart rate and detected nothing. My pup went into such respiratory distress so quickly that to this day, I am certain that he would have died that night had I not taken him in immediately.

No one at Trupanion even took a moment to inform me of their decision to reject my claim, and when I called customer service to cancel my policy, I was met with not a word of resistance. These people were not interested in working with me. They were not interested in helping and they were not interested in keeping me as a customer for the next 10 to 15 years. I will never recommend Trupanion to anyone. I feel intentionally deceived by their marketing, and made to feel irrelevant. This was only about the money they made from my premium, and me receiving nothing in return.

I was told that my Vet had this great special for a petcare plan. As a bonus it came with pet insurance with Trupanion. I was told that all pre-existing conditions were waived to get the insurance. I thought it sounded like a great deal, but it was a scam. My 10 year old dog had been denied previously for pet insurance with Trupanion. She had slightly elevated liver enzymes. My vet assured me that it was just how her body was and we would watch it. So for more than 5 years nothing changed. But then one night she started having seizures. I took her to the vet and her liver enzymes were out of control. It was a sad and scary time. I was told it could be a brain tumor causing it, or liver cancer. Not once were any of those words used previously.

I sent in my first claim with Trupanion. They accepted the claim and put the first bills towards the deductible. But then when I sent in a great deal more, they decided to cover some of the bills and not others. If it was $10, covered. But $1000 and it was denied. On one bill for over a thousand they covered $12. I paid thousands of dollars to get the plan going and this was my first claim with the company. And they only cover what they want to cover. Are you kidding me!!! So, Trupanion agrees to accept that she had brain and liver cancer, but not to accept claims for that illness if they went above a certain amount. That's a scam. How can you say it's ok to pay on a claim for just that issue, but tell me it doesn't cover everything with that disease/illness.

They denied medication for pain, because she had taken it in the past for arthritis. Basically telling me that any medication she had used in the past regardless what it was used for couldn't be applied to this claim. I guess I was supposed to know this and to tell my vet what they could and could not prescribe. Then when I appealed they paid a little more on the pain meds. But again, they accept the illness as coverable, but then don't want to cover things outside the rules. I am even mad at my Vet. I felt that based on how they sold The whole wellness plan with that insurance was to get me to pay for something that later they said is "Huge issue with pet insurance plans. They make it very difficult to get things covered and are nothing more than extra work for their clinic." WHAT!!! So the vet knew it was a possible crazy waste of money and yet they pushed it. And then the office manager blames me for having it.

I've been a loyal customer for more than 17 years and I now know I was being lied to. As I said years ago this exact dog was denied due to that liver enzyme. And if it wasn't for this so called benefit to the wellness package, she would have been denied again. Instead they waived it, processed a claim accepting it, but when it was time to pay out big money they ran from it. Telling me the whole time I should know better. Seriously?! I could have saved so much money NOT getting the insurance. I would have been more careful to deny certain things the vet wanted to do with hope that it would help. Instead, I'm stuck with thousands and thousands of nothing but heartache and anger. So, whatever you do, don't waste your money, because this truly is the definition of a scam.

I've had Trupanion pet insurance for my Pug since he was just a little guy, still a puppy. He's now 3 years old and doing great, thankfully. The reason I thought it was important to leave a review for Trupanion at this time is that my company recently started offering Pet insurance (wow, what a great benefit!) through another provider that presented a very compelling presentation at my office last week. I know that of course price is always a compelling factor, it certainly was for me since my family has now grown to 3 dogs. So I started looking into it today, doing my comparison and looking at the total out of pocket, what's covered, etc, etc.

After looking at the total cost of the "wellness" package, it turns out that based on my last year's preventative expenses I'd still be paying more through the new company, Nationwide, than I have been paying out of pocket. (Trupanion doesn't offer preventative care policies). I've been pretty lucky that my dogs are very healthy, but we do have emergencies that come up, so I decided that perhaps I'd just stay with the more traditional "Catastrophe Insurance" as they call it. Nationwide's insurance premium for "emergencies only" coverage is indeed less than Trupanion. Which would mean I could cover all 3 of my dogs pretty easily.

But then I started looking at reviews for Nationwide... not good. Seems a lot of people are having trouble with "pre-existing conditions" getting covered despite some things never having come up in the past. I don't know, I've never tried to file a claim with Nationwide, but I kept remembering the one and only time I had to use Trupanion, last October, and file a claim it was a total breeze. They were so super helpful. I paid the vet out of pocket ($1200) and I think they reimbursed me the full 90% within a week. (after my $100 deductible).

So, let's be honest, pet insurance isn't cheap. I was somewhat attracted to lower premiums, but having a sick pet is stressful. This is your family. I don't want to add fighting with some stupid insurance agent about why they aren't going to pay for something they said they would during the 'sales pitch'. Something else I remember about every time I've spoken with Trupanion agents on the phone..... they ALWAYS ask about my dog. I honestly think they are animal lovers and that makes a difference to me. Anyway, most people write negative reviews (I think that's important too) but on this occasion I wanted to write a positive one. I am staying with Trupanion. A bit more expensive, but in the end my piece of mind and my dog's health are worth it.

This simple statement resulted in my dog's dermatitis being ruled a pre-existing condition. Even though no rash was evident until the following January. Trupanion tells me my only recourse is to submit a claim to the California Dept. of Insurance. I know in my heart that my statement in October 2016 to a question about fleas has no relevance to my dog's current skin condition, however, given the record, I don't feel I can fight it.

I have now cancelled my Trupanion account because I feel they will find an excuse to deny any claim I submit. Or perhaps they only routinely deny any claim within 18 months of having their insurance since that is the stated time limit for pre-existing conditions. What's most hurtful is the unspoken inference that I lied on my insurance application and only signed up because of this skin condition, which is all lies and furthest from the truth.

After spending thousands in premiums, I finally put a claim in. It's been 3 months and they reached out to 2 different vets asking for my dog's lifetime of vet bills. This is a diversion to not pay. My dog was being tested for skin cancer - A condition he's never had. Before they pay on the claim they're looking for his entire medical history - So 3 months in - I haven't been reimbursed and they keep on looking for reasons to decline. Money better spent is to put the premium in a bank account and use that for vet bills. This is a big Ponzi scheme. You'll pay a lot of money only to realize that you'll get little reimbursement for your vet bills.

We were told that our pet qualified for Trupanion insurance by a Florida vet practice and we signed up for it. No waiting period and we could cancel in 30 days. After many tests, xrays and special food, the diagnosis was gastroenteritis. Yes insurance would cover some of it. We are now out $2000.00 after 2 denials from Trupanion. They have denials for everything. We were told that Trupanion had partnered with this vet practice and was excellent insurance to have. The whole thing is a scam to get pet owners to sign up. I wish there was a way to recover some of our money. Buyer beware of Trupanion. They are unsuitable as insurance carriers and DO NOT STAND FOR WHAT THEY CLAIM TO BE.

I've been with Trupanion for 4 years. Up until now, I've never had an issue. I have 2 policies. My cats have no health problems, I have had one small claim during my years as a customer. My premiums went up at a reasonable rate the last 3 years. Today however, I received an email, stating that my premiums would increase by 95%. Upon investigating further, I was given a multitude of unsatisfactory answers: 1) The advancements of medical technology in my area has increased (so much so in one year!) that it necessitated a 95% spike. 2) While Trupanion "locks in your pet at the age they signed up", the rates for that specific age may (without the customer service department knowing why) suddenly skyrocket (as I've come to learn, by as much as 95%!

After many phone calls and attempts on social media, I've reached no one that can help, or provide a satisfactory answer as to why my policy suddenly jumped 95%. I had noticed other reviewers saying similar things when I first signed up, but attributed it to disgruntled customers, because the plan came so highly recommended. All I can say, is at the end of 4 years, Trupanion's customer service was good, so long as I didn't have an actual problem to deal with. I have literally paid them to do nothing.

I changed my a day after enrollment. Called the next day to cancel, was told another specialist had to cancel membership and that those specialists were all busy. I was told they'd call me back. I waited didn't get the call so I called back the same day, the next and a few days later. Never got a call from them and they remained unavailable. Finally on the 9th day, I called them again and got a hold of the special cancellation specialist. Got a email back confirming cancelling but stating that my refund was less than 100% within 30 days as I was told it would be in my policy. I actually only got back less than the monthly premium and no enrollment fee back.

Spoke to a manager. Completely unhelpful. They decided not to honor their 30 day cancellation 100% money back policy, kept my enrollment fee and refused to pay me a day’s worth of monthly coverage which is why I got refunded less than my monthly premium. Mind you, I had to pull teeth to get someone to discontinue my membership. Was promised a call that I never got. And then got cheated out of money. And by the way, the whole day of coverage that they penalized me for is not even coverage because there is a 3 day waiting period for the insurance to kick in! Unbelievable. UNACCEPTABLE. STAY AWAY!

Paid over $75 a month and when my dog had to get a mass removed from his chest and a tooth removed, I filed a claim. Nothing happened until I began to follow-up and they told me they never received the information from the Vet, which was a lie, since I saw the successful fax transmission receipt. The vet faxed and emailed two more times (which I witnessed) and yet Trupanion still said they did not get the information. They also told me that even if they accepted the claim I would get $100 for a $800 procedure. These people are nothing but con artists.

I have had Trupanion since 2010. In that time I have submitted claims for a knee surgery, teeth extractions, multiple mass removals, a foreign body (rock), cataracts, glaucoma and allergies. All of those conditions but the latter received coverage due to the allergies being a pre-existing condition. My Boston Terrier is scheduled for cataract surgery next month and she will be getting her vision back thanks to Trupanion!!! The estimate for the surgery is $3,000. We met the deductible 2 years ago so our part will be just 10%. The customer service is terrific. The bottom line is, without Trupanion I do not know what we would have done. We are well over $23,000 in claims. It has not just allowed us to have the surgery for her knee but opt for the overnight care, laser therapy and a $1,600 rehab package. Today she is a very healthy 11 year old who has a lot of life yet to live full of chasing balls and taking care of our family.

Trupanion claims that they pay 90% of medical costs? BS! My cat was rushed to the hospital and we had to put her down because she could not breathe. Trupanion told me that they will not pay for any of the cost because my cat has a "pre-existing" condition. Will someone please explain to me how is a sudden sickness is considered "pre-existing?" I was furious so I called and canceled my insurance with them. And now they are sorry for "the loss my cat". It makes me wonder if Trupanion really does care about animals because with the experience I went through, it's complete bull! Never ever ever do business with them! Save your time and money!

I've never been so absolutely disgusted with a company more than Trupanion. After paying through the nose for years, they decided to deny my claims for my dog's allergies. Years and years of bilking me because I put 3 pets on the policy and because my dog was diagnosed with a skin allergy for the first time ever THIS YEAR (2016). Had policy since 2011. They are saying he has a Pre Existing condition. They said his ear infections all 4 since 2009... that's all... for a dog... are considered "allergies" as well. Meanwhile they've been cleaning out my account consistently to the tune of 108.00 a month since 2011. This is complete fraud on their behalf. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!

While I only had my kitten for a few months, the coverage offered was a very appealing deal. I would recommend this company and the cost of the insurance is low. They offer many different types of insurance so you find the coverage that's right for you and your pet. I wasn't offered any discounts, however I only purchased the base policy. If I would have bought a more expensive one I probably would have saved a great deal of money. I never had to file a claim. Nothing happened to my pet. But I'm sure that if I would have needed to file a claim it would've been a short waiting period.

It was not as expensive as some of the other companies I looked around. It was actually pretty affordable. I would spend more if I paid my vet care. I did receive some discounts on the meds that keep my pet healthy look like vitamins meds for their skin and fur and also antibiotics. There are bits of discounts I haven't used yet but do intend to. It didn't take very long to get reimbursement, maybe a week at the most. I felt very comfortable in completion in filing my claims and I loved the people on the phone.

Great coverage for my pet and my pet's medications, also for the stay my pet had that lasted a week. I was very happy I had the coverage. It allowed me to save my puppy. As with any costs of anything it's sometimes hard to see the advantages but it is reasonable and makes the medication affordable luckily. The discounts on the vet stay and the medication is what makes it all worth it. Don't know what I would have done if I didn't have it. I would have lost my puppy to parvo. Very quick. I didn't have any problems. They knew right away and handled the claims as they came along. No dispute of any kind. Great customer service and very friendly.

I purchased coverage for both of my late dogs. It covered an emergency visit or two and really helped offset costs when I discovered one was very ill. The premiums were about one hundred dollars per year and I paid thirty or so dollars each time I took them in for a visit. I had coverage for three years and my premium went up each year but the increase was manageable. I did not receive many discounts. I recall getting one for signing up multiple animals, as well as consolidating their visits and veterinary offices. The claims I had were resolved within 30 days, if not less, and the claims office was very communicative and helpful. I was able to quickly file a claim and the tracking system when I called was helpful.

Coverage seems to be sufficient for most cases. Many situations and instances covered that protect your pet in almost any situation. Variable costs as well. Cost is very fair, as installments are broken into monthly payments and a bonus is given at the end of the statement period if your deductible hasn't been reached. Agents were very thorough and efficiently walked me through the process. I was very pleased with the results and have lower payments now.

I signed up with Trupanion for my cat. The policy cost $25 per month. Every year, they raise it by 20%. When I called to ask why, they said it was because they could. They do NOT cover preventive care, which could find a condition like cancer before it gets VERY expensive. In other words, they NEVER pay for anything that could keep my cat healthy, but raise the premium 20% every year.
