These people are criminals. Thieves. Several states are suing them. I assume they will end up prosecuted. They raise your rates massively, deny every claim, make everything as difficult as possible hoping you'll give up (if you have a life or job you won't have the time or money to fight them and they know it), and they hope you'll just cancel after paying premiums of thousands for years, and then your pet will get old and die in agony because you won't be able to provide the care your pet needs, when they actually get older and need it, after you've paid in the pet's entire young life. They do not care about animals or us humans who love them. These people belong in jail or Luigi'd. This company is criminal. Look at Yelp or BBB or anywhere else. This is absolutely illegal, and they need to be stopped.

Once again we were let down by Trupanion when we really needed them. Any major claim they find reasons to deny. This time because we waited too long to get the treatment for our dog. It is just one reason after another to deny, deny deny. But they sure are quick to raise the premiums. Trupanion is not there when you need them.

This company is a total scam. They never approve anything. As per the terms of insurance, a pet condition has a lifetime deductible. Once the deductible is reached, it should be fully covered. But, they never do this. You might as well throw your premium down the toilet.

If I could write a zero review I would. My 14 year old dog has been with Trupanion since she was 10 weeks old in 2011. We rarely had any claims until she reached about 12 years old. After paying our premiums for over 14 years, Trupanion is now taking almost 4 weeks to review a claim for a condition that has been covered for over 2 years. Our premium was also increased as our claims increased and when we appealed Trupanion’s decision to apply a deductible when it had already been paid for the same illness that occurred randomly over a multi-year timeframe…that happens when your dog reaches 14 years old. Unless your pet is unfortunate to have a chronic, catastrophic ailment, this may not be the insurance model or provider for you. Any breaks between the occurrence of the same ailment (of more than a few years), will be assessed as a new condition, and your deductible will restart.

Never pay out. Make up condition based on their own diagnosis without evidence. Also they say they don’t increase cost as a dog ages but my rates have climbed every year a lot. Originally was 65 and now 4 years later is 170. This company are crooks. My personal office doesn’t even auto submit claims anymore because of shady policies this company employs to deny coverage. By the way, she has never had a single incident that has been approved for coverage.

I had signed up for Trupanion pet insurance after reading good reviews. Now my dog had a CCL rupture and needs surgery. They refused to cover ANY costs because they classified limping as a pre-existing illness. After my vet send them a lengthy letter (as seen in picture) they STILL denied coverage saying they do not cover any CCL injuries that occur within 18 MONTHS!!!! Absolute waste of time and money. My vet hates them too. Have cancelled my subscription.

My dog's breeder advised that we insure with Trupanion and asked that I use her name in the sign up. First red flag as obviously kickbacks were an incentive, certainly not based on good service. I was sold a "full coverage" policy, assured that beyond my $500 deductible for emergencies, or any other illness related issue, I could rest knowing they had our backs. My 14 month old Standard Poodle has been insured since a 12 week old healthy pup. There have been no claims until a few days ago when she inexplicably became very ill and spend 2 days in Emerg being diagnosed and treated. The bill was in excess of $1200. After Trupanion had cherrypicked their way through the treatment, we paid over $1000 and our "full coverage" insurance paid $200! What a scam! Do not waste your money on these snakes. Shame on companies like this who simply steal from a too trusting public.

Insurance scam. Save your money every month instead of paying them. I got three pets with them paying 200 a month for three years. Never file a single claim, one day I found my cat has “teeth resorption” issue, they denied my claim, and claim that I passed the three month since my vet diagnosed my cat could have that problem. And they said even the claim got approved, half of the claim aren’t covered. You still gotta pay it yourself. It will end up paying 50-60% yourself (inspection fee, teeth cleaning fee, pre surgery inspection fee, deductible fee, 10% of claim). Come on, Instead of giving you guys money I rather put $200 into my Pet’s Saving account every month. TRUPANION is totally useless, Paid over $6000 in the past three years for nothing.

Every claim we've submitted has been denied for one reason or another. Most recently, we filed one for our dog's allergies, which have been causing recurring ear infections. At first, it was approved and applied to our deductible. But a few weeks later, they reversed the decision and told us it wouldn’t be covered—because it's now considered a pre-existing condition.
Apparently, the dog’s previous owner once took him to the vet for itching (a totally different issue, long before we adopted him), and that alone was enough for them to deny the claim. So now for the rest of his life, they won't cover anything allergy related. We’re super disappointed and seriously considering canceling the policy and switching to another company. Either way, we’re stuck now—because his allergies are officially marked as pre-existing. And just to top it off, they raised our premium by $20/month at the start of the year.

Do not use TRUPANION pet insurance. As a 7 year customer I did not receive anything for the monthly premium I paid for 7+ years. The 1 claim I did submit was denied because of the fine print in their policy. The bottom line is the formula they use to set deductibles and offer coverage is designed in a way that you would be better off paying out of pocket for services and saving your monthly premium payments for catastrophic events. This service is such a scam!

Classic insurance company. Will deny coverages for existing conditions but charge you like you're getting covered for absolutely everything. I think my premiums just about doubled in 6 years with no claims. My personal experience would have cost me over 7000 dollars for the term of my policy to be rejected on my first and only claim to cover to euthanize my pet versus putting him through a 3rd back surgery which wouldn't have been covered by them either. Apparently if the reasoning for being euthanized has anything to do with a prior condition they won't cover it... it's not about the couple of dollars I didn't get reimbursed but more about the slimy reasoning that they use to justify this denial all while keeping their hands out for your ever-increasing monthly payment. Do yourself a favor and put the equivalent In a savings account.

Be very careful about spending the extra money for their "Recovery and Complementary Care Rider." In their “Recovery and Complementary Care Rider” part C, Hydrotherapy, Trupanion states the following: “Hydrotherapy involves the use of water to aid in the healing and/or conditional of a patient. Pets either swim in a pool or tank prescribed periods of time, or, walk on an underwater treadmill. Hydrotherapy is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, orthopedic conditions, neurological conditions and muscle, ligament and other soft tissue injuries. The therapy must be recommended by Your Veterinarian and it must be provided by or under the Direct Supervision of Your Veterinarian.”
My dog’s licensed Veterinarian recommended hydrotherapy for my dog, Dolly. I submitted her letter of recommendation and her medical plan which also recommended warm water swimming to help with Dolly’s degenerative disc disease and arthritis. The facility I go to, Fido Physio, provides regular updates to the Supervising Veterinarian and the therapy is provided by a person who is a member in good standing of the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork/Association of Canine Water Therapy, and, a Certificate of Canine Aquatic Therapy.
When they denied my claim I filed an appeal with all of the above information and noted that I didn’t know of any Veterinarian Clinics that had warm water pools which Dolly’s doctor felt would be better for Dolly’s condition than a treadmill. When Trupanion denied the claim again they said that the therapy must be provided by “staff under direct veterinarian supervision. (No Veterinarian has the time to watch your dog swim, or, for that matter walk on an underwater treadmill) Alternatively, Physical Rehabilitation services may also be provided by a Certified Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT, CCRA, CCRP, CCRVN, VMRT, Diplomate Canine Rehab from Canadian Physiotherapy Association) if referred by a veterinarian. Because the requirement for a Certified Rehabilitation Therapist is not included in the Policy Rider, I believe the rider is made in Bad Faith.

I agree with the others distrust and disgust in Trupanion. We picked up our 6 month old female doodle and went to the vet that same day for a checkup. The breeder we got her from supposedly works with trupanion and was covered for 30 days. We called and set her up with an insurance policy that same day, if not the day after. Her initial diagnostics at the vet visit caught that she had hookworm. I submitted invoices to Trupanion and they told me that wasn't covered due to it being "preventative". The breeder was notified and ghosted us when we mentioned the issues.
Trupanion told me I needed to go after the drug companies themselves. In addition, my dog was seen for a UTI twice, and was put on a prescription diet. Those invoices were submitted and were partially applied towards individual deductibles based on condition. We have paid a total of $944.72 to trupanion, in addition to all the other costs that we have incurred with our pet. Trupanion has paid us $0.

We had a claim for dental cleaning and they refused to pay it due to the vet putting he had dental disease 3 months prior in our dog's chart. Now I called them requesting if they would cover his follow up cleanings that are required due to his dental disease and they told me that they don't cover cleanings now!? Highly recommend avoiding this business and put away money into a savings account for any future vet bills.

I recently got a puppy, and the first owners had a one-month insurance policy with Trupanion, which I were encouraged to renew. During a routine vet visit for vaccinations, our vet noticed that our 8-week-old puppy had an ear infection. When I called Trupanion, they assured that this issue would be covered under the policy. But when I submitted my claim, I was suddenly informed that nothing could be covered because I would have to pay 250 CAD out of pocket. Where is this stated in writing? I have never even received my contract documents. When I asked about it in the chat, I was told that the contract was sent as an attachment with the first email—but there was no attachment in that email. When I pointed this out, the response was simply, "It doesn’t matter, we can send it to you now." This is highly unprofessional and misleading.
The deductible of 250 CAD per condition makes the monthly premium essentially pointless—especially for a puppy. Taxes are not covered, nor are routine check-ups or vaccinations, despite the high monthly rates. This is extremely disappointing, and I can’t help but feel deceived by these practices. New pet owners are already anxious and adjusting, and this kind of dishonesty only adds to the stress. Trupanion has shown zero care or compassion and seems more focused on collecting premiums than supporting pets or their owners. Avoid Trupanion. Dishonest and Misleading—Avoid Trupanion. We recently got a puppy, and the first owners had a one-month insurance policy with Trupanion, which we were encouraged to renew. During a routine vet visit for vaccinations, our vet noticed that our 14-week-old puppy had lower canines growing into the upper inner gums—a teething issue that had just started. When we called Trupanion, we spoke with Amanda from Sales, who assured us that this issue would be covered under the policy if we renewed. Trusting her word, we renewed the policy.
However, after our vet submitted a pre-approval for the extraction procedure, Trupanion denied the claim, stating it was a pre-existing condition. This was never raised as an issue during renewal. When we called back to contest the decision, they continued to make excuses, eventually claiming the issue was reported within 30 days of renewal and therefore ineligible.
Why are we paying such high premiums for a company that denies valid claims using vague and shifting excuses? They misled us into renewing the policy with assurances of coverage, only to leave us with no support when we needed it most. This is especially infuriating as it concerns a young, 14-week-old puppy just starting to teethe—something no one could predict. It feels like Trupanion is exploiting pet owners, offering false assurances while denying legitimate claims under the guise of "pre-existing conditions."
New pet owners are already anxious and adjusting, and this kind of dishonesty only adds to the stress. Trupanion has shown zero care or compassion and seems more focused on collecting premiums than supporting pets or their owners. Avoid Trupanion. What they refuse to cover is very extensive. They will go over any and all vet records dating back to when you first got the dog. If your dog so much had a runny nose then they don’t support respiratory issues. If your dog ever sprained her leg, then they don’t cover arthritis or torn or ruptured ligaments. If your dog has ever acted as if she’s in pain then they don’t cover hip dysplasia or arthritis. If your dog ever had a cough, then they won’t cover respiratory issues. And I mean ever if your dog is 10 years old, they will count stuff from when your dog was six months old. What they do cover is practically nothing once they’re done reviewing all your Vet records.

Dog chewed a stick, got a small cut that became an abscess, needed $3500 hospital visit to image/drain/stitch abscess. Pet parents run from Trupanion. When your dear pet gets sick and you start submitting claims, they continually process claims without reaching out to the veterinarian medical provider for medical information, therefore processing each claim submitted as a new (PER) condition claim, therefore making a bottomless deductible. The continuous response is you can go through the appeal process.
This practice hopes that the consumer doesn’t go through the appeal process so that Trupanion does not have to pay on an insurance claim. I personally have experienced this over and over and over again, submitting claims for a condition that is not new and should not be processed as a PER condition deductible. This is not an insurance company you want to go with because when your pet get sick, you will not be reimbursed because they will apply it to their per condition bottomless deductible and then tell you to appeal it. Not once did they ever reach out to the veterinarian to obtain medical records and process the claim correctly. Run from Trupanion.

Horrible company for cat insurance. First time I went to the vet to bring my cat, who was a stray, they told me that all her conditions were pre-existing because I can’t prove they weren’t with a previous vet record. How could I have a record for an adopted pet who was living in a bush. Beware of the fine print and all the exclusions. I was shocked to find that they refuse coverage for so many random reasons. They will kill you with kindness to get you signed up, but then you get the sharks once it’s time to see the vet and submit a claim. Pretty much assume you will be denied. I’d assume they are good if you never need to submit a claim for cats, but if you do they won’t pay.
Plus, the customer service is terrible. When I went to cancel and express my concerns, the cancellation agent said “you are unproductive and need to spend more time reading the entire contract.” I was taken aback because I just found out my pet had a medical issue and the insurance denied the claim so I was naturally upset. Tristan, the agent, is a horrible person. I asked if they could refund my premiums for the past 4 months since they refuse to cover anything. He told me they are regulated by the American Pet Insurance Company (APIC) and APIC says they can not provide refunds. So I called APIC and asked if this is true and they said “we have never heard of this.” Tristan is an interesting choice for customer service. Overall, maybe good for dogs (I can’t speak on this), but don’t buy for cats. There are better options I’m sure. But probably better off just paying out of pocket.

I haven't filed a claim in 3 years and my premiums over the past 4 years have more than covered what they paid out the first year. Who can afford $230 a month for pet insurance? You may as well just put that in a savings account for your dog and you would quickly have plenty to use for emergencies. I called to cancel and they tried hard to talk me out of it and were quite argumentative, including offering me a lower rate of about half of what I'm paying out now. I find this unethical, if they are able to charge less for your premium, why would they only do it when you are canceling? When it comes down to actually calculating what they will pay for a claim there are suddenly many new rules and things they deduct from their payment.
I have been paying $135 per month for 10 years for my mastiff who has never really been very sick or had any problems.. For the first time I actually had a claim that fell within what they would cover (minor surgery that cost me about $4,000). After the deductible title and all the little things they deductible from their responsibility they only paid $1,500 of it. (They took a significant percentage off for a the responsibility of me having a second insurance policy which I don't have. Seems like a rule they made up to pay less.) I am stuck with them because my dog is now 10 years old with a (now that she had this growth removed) preexisting condition but I would never buy insurance from them again. Stay away. When 3 days passed I started to get suspicious. I took my dog in for a follow-up and the bump imploded and had to have immediate surgery. That's another $450. Then today 2 days after her surgery Trupanion DENIED my claim. They lied and scammed me for the huge money and I could have went with several other companies, a lot cheaper who would have paid the claim after reimbursement. All their emails and all their ads were dishonest and I want my money back. All of it because of this.

The people who call Trupanion a scam are spot on. My experience was the same: pre-existing condition, deny. My dog recently had an ear infection that required antibiotics to clear. Submitted the claim: denied as a pre-existing condition as an “allergy.” There is no way that an allergy, an autoimmune response from an allergen, is the same thing as a bacterial infection caused by a parasite and treated with antibiotics.
Trupanion will twist the language found in your pet’s medical record to support their pre-existing condition exclusion, in my case focusing on “ear” but disregarding any difference in diagnosis or treatment. You’re better off taking the money you pay them and setting it aside into an interest bearing savings account. When I cancelled, they told me I had a 72 hour grace period to change my mind. As I told them, if given the choice of giving them my money or burning it, I would burn it and at least get something from the heat. Save your money.

Trupanion has written a line in their policies (dogs) that exclude 'exams.' This one line, one word, eliminates nearly all coverage. When a sick or injured animal is brought to a vet, the encounter always begins with an exam, because dogs can't talk. So nearly all expenses associated with an injury or illness are excluded, including prescriptions and medications dispensed for treatment. By calling the encounter an 'exam' instead of using the word 'treatment', all expenses associated with an injury are excluded. As noted by others, Trupanion insurance is expensive. They advertise as a premium brand. The truth is Trupanion is a fraud, a scam. They provide almost no coverage for injuries or unexpected events.

I had 2 recent claims with for my 6 year old dog. The April 2024 claim was for injuries from another dog attacking her. As it was a Sunday evening, she was taken to the emergency vet clinic for treatment. Several days later she developed an infection and required further care. The total bill was $1,487 and I received a payment of $17.33. In July 2024 she had a cancerous tumor removed and for a bill of almost $1,400 payment received was $165.06. Trupanion covers almost nothing; they don't even cover the initial exam when your pet is has serious injuries! Today I received that the monthly fee is increasing almost 50% to over $61. I would give Trupanion a negative-five stars if that was available. A total scam. I have paid in $12,000 and when I finally brought my dog in for the first ever time for a leg injury, they would only pay $321.97 of a $1,283.30 emergency vet bill, thereby leaving me to pay $961.33. Their reasoning? First a $500 deduction on EACH visit for a new "ailment", not the annual one time $500 deductible that is common for health and prescription coverage, which I could have accepted. They would also not cover the emergency exam, nor the resultant prescription (because it was not a "category" they choose pay for). After so many years of paying them, I immediately canceled...

Trupanion is only useful if your pet has 1 singular medical condition/emergency and it's several thousand dollars. We took our pet to the vet ER. She was coughing like she was going to throw up every 5-10 minutes. I thought it may be related to the suspected UTI she had (was planning to take her to the vet the next day) and was instructed to go in right away to the vet ER. She was diagnosed and treated for a UTI & kennel cough. She was lethargic and not herself. Trupanion does not cover any "exam" fees even if it's at an ER. They also split the claims up since they were two different conditions, so we owe our deductible on both. After that, we basically owe the entire bill (close to $1000).
We immediately canceled and will never use them again. Definitely not worth paying $80+ dollars per month. Based on what I am seeing here, their reviews are fake when you look elsewhere. I'd be fine with transparency and knowing what to expect but thinking we'd owe the $250 deductible plus 10% of the total and finding out we owe several hundred dollars more is incredibly disappointing.

Trupanion is nothing but a scam. They have incentives for breeders to utilize their company as a way to attract puppy buyers. The insurance only covers diseases states that occur over time and not emergent visit or wellness visits. By the time you pay the premiums for a dog's lifetime and they get old (but only with a diseases state which has been documented and turned in) will you ever get coverage. You have to meet your deductible as well before things begin to be covered. They do allow for you to put forth your deductible for one disease state for lifetime. Ex: 9 week old puppy fractures leg. You pay deductible for first few visits. After large deductible amount is met, all future visits are covered, but you have to pay up front or provide receipts for reimbursement. If puppy fractures other leg, you start paying towards a new deductible, and repeat the process.

I've been overcharged on my insurance because my dog was listed as unknown size. Apparently when I started with Trupanion all mix breeds were listed as unknown size, even though I selected Boston Terrier mix. 2 years into my contract, Trupanion made a small dog category and did not inform me. If my dog had been listed as a small dog, I would have been charged significantly less. For 8 out of the 10 years I've been charged a much higher rate than I should have been. I'm out hundreds of dollars, roughly $565 before tax. I have never once made a claim and always paid on time.
I gave Trupanion my dog's breed when I signed up. A Boston Terrier mix. I never provided Trupanion any incorrect information. Trupanion changed it policy and did not inform me. He has recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, and we're over a thousand dollars in vet bills. So far, all we get told is that it's not covered, and they want us to give them a list of all of his vet visits, over the past eight years, names of veterinarians, addresses, reasons, etc. I would have thought that they would have worked out all these details about eligibility before they started accepting our money.
It will take hours of work to compile all the information. My wife is upset at the way we're being treated. I have little expectation that they won't find another reason to avoid paying. We would have received better value for the money we spent on Trupanion pet insurance if we'd set it on fire. At least we would have got some heat and light from it. I would recommend Trupanion to people I really, really disliked. Everyone else, avoid them like the plague.

Didn't know what it was at first visit at out of town emergency vet. Total was $619..77. Trupanion only paid $206.58 because (1) they don't pay exam fees (and there are always exam fees); (2) owner has to pay 10% (they call it co-insurance); (3) $200 deductible for this condition and (4) they don't pay taxes. It still wasn't resolved when I got home so back to my vet. Total was $234.30 and neither the $116 exam fee nor the taxes were covered. I am going to look at less expensive coverage.

Updated on 07/18/2024: I'd like to update my previous review. I want to acknowledge the Veterinary Hospital for consistently providing accurate documentation to Trupanion. Trupanion thoroughly reviewed my dog's case and approved the necessary surgery. It's commendable when a company takes extra steps to rectify a situation. I applaud the Trupanion team member who took the time to reassess and make the right decision.
Original Review: I am beyond disappointed and disgusted with Trupanion's blatant refusal to honor their commitment to my dog, Sookie. Since 2017, I have faithfully paid over $100 a month in premiums, totaling well over double the cost of the $4,000 surgery she now needs. Despite never receiving a single payout from Trupanion in all those years, I continued to believe I was securing her health and well-being.
However, when Sookie needed this surgery to remove unrelated masses, Trupanion showed their true colors. Despite a detailed appeal from the veterinary surgeon confirming the masses were not pre-existing, Trupanion denied coverage, leaving me with the entire financial burden. Their excuse? They needed a "finalized invoice and additional information," even though they already possessed all the relevant details. This is a clear case of insurance bad faith, designed to delay and avoid paying legitimate claims.
Trupanion's actions are not only unethical but also cruel. They prey on pet owners' love and concern for their animals, collecting hefty premiums only to abandon them in their time of need. My experience serves as a warning to others: Trupanion is not a trustworthy company and will likely leave you high and dry when you need them most. Save your money and find a pet insurance provider that genuinely cares for the well-being of your furry family members. Don't make the same mistake I did. Avoid Trupanion at all costs.

They increase the price annually, claiming that it is based on increased cost of treatments. I just received an increase from $99.38 per month to $122.37 per month (that's a 23% increase in one year). I have had several dogs covered by Trupanion in the years since my 1st enrollment in May of 2005. My experience with Trupanion [formally Vet Insurance] has been very positive through some very costly medical issues over those nearly 20 years. My most recent experience has been anything but positive. I am currently the very proud guardian of 4 dogs, only 1 of which, a 13 yr old female, is currently being covered by Trupanion since she came to me in 2013. Trupanion has not paid out one penny in claims over the past 11 years for my very healthy girl, although I am paying $190/month in premiums, just for her coverage.
Recently during my girl's annual check up it was recommended by my Vet that she have a non emergency dental procedure, no recommended time frame was given. Due to circumstances, I cancelled an initial appointment for the procedure scheduled for 14 days after the recommendation. Not remembering a line in the policy, I took out 10 years previous, stating a dental procedure had to be completed within "3 months". I unfortunately waited 3 months less 2 days to make an appointment, however the procedure could not be completed until 3 months and 15 days after her initial appointment. Because I did not keep up on every nuisance and word of the Trupanion Policy, Trupanion rejected my claim and an appeal made both by myself and my Veterinarian explaining the circumstances.
Despite paying $9,412.02 in premiums over the past 10 years 5 months for my girl alone, Trupanion has decided to rejected my claim for $1,479.46 based on 1 line, buried in their policy. I will have to seriously consider if I wish to continue paying $189.18/month for my girl's coverage. Coverage that apparently that does not exist. A premium that increased 35% and 25% annually over the past 2 years, or find coverage that I can count on, and afford, elsewhere, as I have done with my other 3 companions.

We had purchased Trupanion for our cat that had been attacked by a dog. I had read ratings, and their website and it seemed the way to go. They did, according to them, a true and thorough background check on my cat to see what pre-existing conditions she might have. Once that was cleared, they agreed to pay for a condition that arose during a surgery. Little did I know that even though the food was PRESCRIPTION, and we tried all other medications, nothing seemed to work except what was in - or not in - this PRESCRIPTION diet. Trupanion has a little clause in there that says that they will pay only for 90 days worth of food - EVEN IF it is a Prescription, EVEN IF it's the only thing that treats the condition, which it was.
I argued for months - THEN, I get the renewal letter for our policy - They had the unmitigated AUDACITY to double our premium, even though they were refusing to pay for the condition that they agreed to pay for - because of 4 little letters - FOOD. They thought they would fool me by saying that they would pay their percentage for the food - but ONLY for another 90 days. They had obviously configured the raise in our rates to cover their portion - which they should have been paying after the initial 90 days was up - that they refused to pay.
I was never able to get past the "supervisory" level at Trupanion - to speak to someone who was willing to argue my case - it was a PRESCRIPTION diet - not over the counter. PRESCRIPTION - Anyway. I'm done with Trupanion. Honestly - they're all pretty much the same - corporate greed is the disease that apparently can't be cured - even with a PRESCRIPTION for integrity.

If I could give less than 1 star I would. Absolute terrible customer service, it has been a nightmare dealing with Trupanion. They are very sneaky when signing up, and find any way NOT to cover. 2 months I’ve been fighting with them to cover a surgery for a condition that I’ve already met the deductible for. Now they want me to appeal because they say that the vet called the tumour something else during 1st examination and each type of tumour has to be a separate claim. A tumour is a tumour. A lumpectomy is a lumpectomy. Also they have raised my rates every 6 months essentially doubling my monthly rate since sign up. And now my dogs are too old to switch to another company because their preexisting won't be covered-so I’m trapped with trupanion. Do not get involved with Trupanion. Terrible, terrible company

I've had Trupanion for one of my cats since 2016, the other since July 2017 (he was adopted officially in February 2017). I was upfront with Trupanion when I added the 2nd cat following a bacterial UTI (in July 2017). The CSR assured me that after a 1 year waiting period, any urinary issues would be covered per the policy. Fast forward to February 2023 when the 2nd cat developed urinary issues which were denied (this had the vet scratching his head as the issue in 2017 was completely different from that in 2023 and it had been 5 1/2 years since there was any urinary incident). I spent over $3,500 in 2023 on this cat's medical care (including surgery for removing bladder stone in November 2023) while appealing the denial from March 2023. As far as I can tell, the appeal is still in process. Or maybe not. Who knows. Only Trupanion knows.
I paid premiums on both cats in good faith because in 2017 the CSR said that urinary issues would be covered in full after a 1 year waiting period on the second cat. I've continued to pay premiums on that cat in good faith through the appeal process. Now I suspect I'm throwing good money after bad. But if I stop paying the premium and the claim is still truly in the appeal process, then have I negated reimbursement by cancelling insurance?!?
My own situation was disheartening and frustrating. I started researching how to change pet insurance companies with a pre-existing condition (both cats have urinary issues). It soon became apparent that I'm not alone. Something at Trupanion changed between 2017 and 2023. It appears many other pet owners have shared my experience -- pre-existing condition will be covered after 1 year waiting period (in 2017) and then denied in 2023. I now have a complete loss of confidence in Trupanion.
I filed a claim with Trupanion in December 2022 for dental extraction for the 2nd cat. That claim was denied by Trupanion for a pre-existing condition due to gingivitis (I had his teeth cleaned immediately upon the vet telling me he had gingivitis and tartar build up years before and dental exams had been excellent since then). I complained one time on social media and Trupanion immediately reversed the denial for the dental surgery. Again, there are many other pet insurance companies out there -- many top rated ones offer discounts through one's employer, medical / homeowner / auto insurer, even Costco. There's no reason to be paying gold standard premiums for a sub-prime pet insurance policy.

Stay away. They look for every excuse not to pay anything. The only reason we actual have insurance is because our last dog needed lung surgery and it cost over $10,000. We figured let's not get into that position again. They won't cover a monthly allergy shot because she had ear infections. They said the ear infection is related to her licking her paws. Even our vet wrote to them pleading our case. This is just one instance. Bottom line is they really do suck. Just stay away from this company. It will save you aggravation,.

Paid Trupanion for 7 years. Dog got sick. Over 4 claims for same covered condition and making me pay 200 deductible each claim? Sent mean email to claims after asking them to call me in vain. 1 minute later someone sent a denied claim for 530 dollars for breathing difficulties no explanation. Trying to be cute? Have a complaint in progress with BBB. I will get this resolved. I thought having Trupanion was an asset. Wrong.

Some of these bad reviews are hilarious! Your uninsured 7 year old cat needed dental surgery so you got Trupanion? Thinking they would cover a preexisting condition? Absolutely not. You get insurance before you need it. And they don’t cover neuters and spays and routine care?! This is stated clearly as these are PLANNED expenses. Now the reviews about prices increasing are valid, and concerning. And the denials here seem a bit shady. I wonder if we’re not getting the full story? Regardless! We have had Trupanion for 8 years and just had a significant price increase that is concerning, hence my looking around at reviews to see if others are being hit with a more than the quoted 10-15% annual possible increase.
I think Trupanion could improve and get back to being one of the top rated companies. I’d like to see their cheesy “sales reps” be re-configured as Trupanion does pay an awful lot to them. Pet insurance is so widely available now that having so many sales reps, and even cheesier “regional sales managers”, is a huge cost for Trupanion. How about cutting the needless stuff like that and providing better customer service directly by continuing to invest in your customer care and in paying for claims that really should be paid? Again, not these truly not valid/non-qualifying ones, but get back to great customer care directly (phones) and ensuring the claims review process is fair and accurate, and if needed, reviewed by a veterinarian? Seems Trupanion has room to improve and I hope they listen, and make changes!

Originally opted in at an already high rate of $110/month for our doodle puppy, and they have increased 3 times and are now $170/month. Insane when pet insurance starts costing more than human insurance. Will be switching to alternate provider soon that is half the cost but sets reasonable annual caps of $10-15K/year for claims. At Trupanion, you'll be paying for everyone else's pets with chronic conditions.

Trupanion is the only reason I've been able to provide my golden retriever with the medications and treatments he needs. I've never had any issues with the claims process, as I make sure all vets he visits accept the Trupanion direct pay ahead of time. This is pretty easy to do and gives me the greatest peace of mind. Definitely recommend doing your research and calling vets to make sure you visit direct-pay vets only when possible. For larger (more expensive visits) I submit estimates for pre-approval, that way I don't have to worry about being stuck with a bill I can't pay at checkout.
Their customer service is amazing, the longest a pre-approval has taken me was 2 days. Once we had to bring him into a specialist in Manhattan for extensive testing (spinal tap, MRI, etc.) and I had forgotten to get a pre-approval done ahead of time, I called the night before and had the estimate approved within 2 hours in my inbox thanks to their expedited service for time-sensitive situations. Aside from our very first time using his policy at checkout, which took about 15 minutes, the checkout process is impressively fast and usually we don't even need to sit down before the claim is approved and paid (about 2 minutes.)
The only time we ever had an issue with something not being covered it was resolved quickly. Our dog has pre-existing allergies which are not covered by his policy; years ago he was prescribed fish oil and so when he was prescribed fish oil for his hip issues the claim came back automatically denied. After submitting an appeal the claim was approved within two days.
As far as having to submit claims yourself: our dog needs medication from a special pharmacy that doesn't accept direct pay, we submit these claims every month and they are reimbursed into our bank accounts typically within 2-4 days. That is an insanely good turnaround, with this medication being over 300 dollars alone we are so grateful to have that money back in our pocket.
As far as deductibles, we chose a 100 dollar deductible. The fact that Trupanion does "per condition" deductibles instead of per year etc. is absolutely a life-saver. We don't need to worry about paying deductibles ever again once we've paid it. Our dog was diagnosed with a seizure condition: we pay the deductible once and never again for anything related to it. We didn't pay it again when he needed his meds each month, when he needed an MRI, when he had a spinal tap done, and so on. This applies for all the conditions he's been diagnosed with since we got his policy and has honestly been such a lifesaver. We're a big fan of the per-condition deductible policy.
The only downside of Trupanion is that they don't cover exam fees, but honestly that is something that can be budgeted for. The point of insurance is to protect you from the large, unexpected, and expensive recurring bills. I feel that having to pay 60 or 80 dollars for an exam fee is something we can reasonably plan for. Trupanion gives you a detailed outline of everything that will NOT be covered once you purchase a plan. You have 30 days to change your mind and get a refund for your first month, therefore you can evaluate what will not be covered prior to deciding to commit to your plan. I really appreciated this, as it makes it clear and easy to understand how the plan will work with you and your animal moving forward.
Overall their 24/7 customer service is fantastic, you always talk to a real person and they're always willing to wiggle things around to help you out. Checkout, at direct-pay accepting vets, is fast and hassle-free. In the two years we have had the policy we have not run into any real issues whatsoever. Our rate was around 160 for the first year and is 190 now, this rate increase is significant but well worth it in my opinion. His medications and routine urine tests (he has proteinuria) would be over 700 dollars a month without insurance. Our policy has covered thousands upon thousands in bills, without any headache or hassle. The peace of mind we get from knowing that vet visits are financially stress-free makes this pricey policy worth ever single penny. I would never choose to save on monthly premiums and go with another insurance company.
The fact that Trupanion policies have NO payout limits also really sets it apart from competitors. There is a reason the policies are so expensive. I've seen so many friends struggle with payout caps while our dog has received a ludicrous amount of treatment payout without us ever considering whether it would be "too much" or pass any sort of payout cap. If you truly want peace of mind, hassle-free, and dependable coverage for your dog for life, get Trupanion. It is EXPENSIVE, but it is also WORTH every. single. penny.

13 months ago we were paying $59.82/month for our Labradane. Last March, they increased our premium to $83.59. Today, I just received notice that it will increase to $125.49/month. This means in a 13-month window, my premiums will have more than doubled! We have a $1000 deductible for Willy. We've paid over $3000 in premiums to Trupanion over the years. Had I put that money in the bank instead of wasting it on Trupanion, we'd have over $4000 to invest in any vet bills he "might" incur.
Furthermore, we have 5 rescue dogs, Willy being one of them. He's the only one with insurance. Which means if any of the others need an emergency vet, we'll have no insurance and be out of pocket. So, it'd be nice to have that $3k in the bank for whatever dog may need it. It seems like Trupanion will affordably insure your dog until they reach the age they may need the insurance. Then they double your rates to force you out before they have to pay anything. I can't believe a model like that is legal... but I guess because it's for animals, there is no government regulation and insurance companies can perform as criminally as they choose.

If an insect bites your pet and your vet notes the bump, and if your pet was slightly overweight at some point, it seems highly likely they will deny any claim and use the pet's “overweight “ (even if slightly overweight) as a reason for denying claim. A year later my premiums were raised to ~$165.00 CAD/month with the same deductible, even though we have not submitted a claim or had any vet issues. When I called to cancel they even admitted that was an unusually high increase and that they wouldn't do it every year. Maybe that's accurate but to take an agent's word for it is something I'm not willing to risk.
I've paid just over $1,600.00 in premiums since we started the policy, just over a year ago, that could have been put into savings for if something happened and I have some serious regrets about signing up for pet insurance as I now have the choice of paying ~$2,000.00/year minimum to keep the $1,600.00 I've already put into it OR lose the $1,600.00 altogether. Trupanion treated one as a treatment for Nexus and the other for Hemotoma so they could treat as two conditions, split the bill (so that $500 deductible could be deducted from both) and not pay me anything. There was no mention of either on the bill. It says on their website that they cover you for “hereditary conditions” and “breed specific conditions”, however they don’t cover you for “pre-existing conditions”. “Congenital conditions your pet developed before birth” is also something their website says they cover, so I’d love to know how my cat that was born with a condition that would be considered “developed before birth” which later led to his death, falls under a pre-existing condition category. You can’t state that your coverage includes conditions existing before birth but retract that statement and label it as pre-existing or non payable once it means a payout is required. I researched Trupanion before I bought pet insurance for my 2-month-old Springer Spaniel. I figured what could go wrong, he was 2-3 months old when the insurance kicked in after 30 days. He was perfect. He was a puppy. Before my 30-day grace period was over I took him to the vet to have his first check up. Everything was great with the exception that his ears were a little "dirty". They were cleaned and that was that. At about a year old he had an ear infection. I made a claim and because his ears were a little dirty before the grace period was up, they denied my claim saying it was a preexisting condition. Like an idiot, I continued with the insurance for the next 3 years.
Recently my dog started getting really bad breath. I took him to the vet and he ended up having periodontal disease plus he needed 3 teeth pulled. Not normal for Springers. I have had 3 of them and never did they need to even have their teeth cleaned let alone have teeth pulled...especially at this age. I made a claim to Trupanion. The reason they denied my claim this time was that the early records from my vet showed that my perfect puppy of 2 months old had 2/4 periodontal disease. And although in the same report and in later documentation it showed he had 0/4 periodontal disease, they didn't ask questions or consider that strange, they just denied my claim based on it being a preexisting condition.
I called Trupanion to complain and asked them to cancel my policy. A nice woman convinced me to hold off and submit an appeal as my vet had explained to me that back when my dog was a puppy they had trouble with their software and my puppy's reports defaulted to 2/4 periodontal disease. I sent the appeal in with my vet's explanation and didn't cancel the policy. It took over a month to get an answer back and therefore paid still another premium. And of course, you guessed it, my appeal was denied.
During covid my father-in-law died, we had to "shelter in place" for months on end, I am not even sure my vet was taking well check-up appointments at that time, but because my dog had not been seen by a vet from 2020 to 2023, and because the policy says in fine print that your dog has to have a check-up every 12 months to be covered, they denied my appeal. I want my money back. I want my time back from the waste of time I spent trying to make this claim. From my point of view, their goal when a claim comes in is to figure out how they can deny it. I wish i could give 0 stars. This is a scam. We've been with Trupanion for 5 years. Sure, they pay up (as do any other pet insurance companies) but they will also increase your premium yearly a ridiculous amount. In the last year both our dogs (insured with them) have had a 40% increase! And that's just in the last year.. Prior year it was 20% increase. I understand inflation and why premiums go up.. but 40% in one year? I've also spoken to other people not with trupanion and their premiums have gone up $5 lol which is a lot different from my $50 increase with just the one dog. And might I add their pet insurance ALSO pays up no problem. So why is Trupanion's calculation of inflation so much more than the others?
We are switching insurances on one of our dogs but unfortunately, we are stuck with the other as he has had ACL issues which would mean a "pre-existing condition" if we were to switch insurance companies for him. We started out paying a reasonable $70/month with $250 deductible but over time we have kept increasing our deductible to try to keep our premiums lower. Now we're paying $170/month for $750 deductible. And that's just the one dog. The other dog we're now paying $150/month for $750 deductible as well. STAY AWAY FROM TRUPANION... Don't make the same mistake as us. Now we either suck it up and pay whatever ** premium they throw at us or have no insurance.. (which at this point is kind of starting to look ideal).

My experience was: paid $590 for the vet, received $110 from Trupanion. They don't pay for examination fees; they don't pay taxes (mandatory in Ontario - 13%); they apply coinsurance to deductible (i.e. first $300 that you pay only count as $250 if your coinsurance is 80%); they don't pay administrative charges. I have cancelled insurance with them and found much better company that actually cares about your pet.

They're increasing my premium from $102.58 to $129.55 over a 26% increase. They market as if they don't increase the premium for your dog if they're 'unlucky' or based on their age but you'll see an increase regardless. They claim to care but they really don't they will find all excuses to not payout or payout bare minimum and keep increasing your premium for other reasons and excuses they hide behind. They used to do direct billing but not anymore according to my vet, we have to submit the claims ourselves and wait for them to process the claim. I submitted a claim over 10 days ago and no response still.
This is my biggest regret, I should've listened to myself and just saved the premium set aside for anything that arises for my dog. I've spent over $6000 over 5 years in premiums and have claimed barely anything back because of the deductible and denied claims. This is a waste of money, better off just setting aside $100/month for your pet.

That’s a 23% increase, way way higher than inflation and seems like what some economists are calling greedflation: corporations sneaking in price increases to bolster their profit margins during a time when consumers will think the costs are due to actual inflation. After dealing with Trupanion for many years and, sadly, ignoring the advice of my friends, I have finally cancelled my membership. At the time of cancellation, they were planning to increase my monthly premium of $91.22 to $121.00! The last episode of illness for my 14 year old mixed breed hound, a nasal obstruction due to a growth, occurred over a period of 16 months. It involved three invoices attached to one claim totaling $1,020.45. Since I have a $500 deductible for each illness, I was expecting compensation of $520.00. I received a paltry $125.00. During this exact same time period, I paid Trupanion $1,302.45 in premiums! The MO of Trupanion is to confuse and patiently explain why they cannot pay you while all the time chirping pleasantly through email and on the phone about concern for your pet. PLEASE SELF-INSURE. Put money aside for the care of your pet. Trupanion is just big business. They win and you and your beloved pet lose.

I brought my new dog to the vet for their initial visit. At the end of the visit, the vet said that I had the option to try Trupanion "free of charge" for 30 days and then could decide if I wanted it. Later that day I received an email from Trupanion offering to continue the insurance after the 30 day free trial for $119.42/month. I used a different browser and input the same information to get a quote outside of my vet and it was only $79.73 - a difference of about $40 per month. Over one year, that is $4,800 MORE in premiums if I accepted coverage through my vet. Now think about that over the life of your pet. It's November 2021. SEC filing says "Trupanion members tend to visit their veterinarian more frequently and spend more money on the best course of treatment for their pet." This may explain why they gouge you if you apply through your vet - Trupanion knows it will likely have to pay out more over the life of your pet.

I submitted claims four weeks ago and keep getting stories about data migration and new software to explain the delays. In the more than 10 years our dogs have been insured with Trupanion, our monthly premiums have gone from $90 per month to $370 per month. I think that's a fact that people need to bear in mind when considering pet insurance. In our first years with Trupanion, we were happy customers, and never begrudged the thousands we spent each year in premiums. Lately though, Trupanion is no longer settling claims in a timely and reasonable manner, and they are subjecting clients like me, my vet and my vet's staff to outrageous processes to appeal any decisions they have made in error. I suspect that this is their new normal given how Trupanion's stock price is plummeting, and it is clearly reflected in the number of negative reviews like mine that are appearing in recent months.
Please consider alternative pet insurers who will give you the stability, consistency and peace-of-mind that are the very reasons any of us purchase pet insurance. After paying for 6 years ($4200) he needed some dental surgery that was crucial to his health and life. It cost $2500 and all they covered was $400. They do not cover anesthesia which is almost $500 and required for any surgery. They assumed he was only getting a teeth cleaning based on the vet paperwork. Even after the vet had to call them to say this was a necessary surgery for him. They kicked in another $50. Needless to say we dropped them after that. Save your money in an account.

Have been paying Trupanion for 2+ years for our puppy, who had a tumor removed recently. The company does its best to avoid paying out for legitimate claims by: a) separating multiple claims for the same injury/illness given coverage is based on "condition" (you need to watch this closely and complain), b) co-insurance 10% cost to you is NOT counted towards deductible, c) not covering vet visit related to the injury/illness (only procedure and meds), and d) broadly not covering routine check-ups and routine procedures (neuter/spay - which is expensive). Additionally, claims process takes a week or more, clearly in hopes that you aren't paying attention to their scam. If I could give them zero stars- I would! I decided to take out pet insurance about a year after I adopted my dog. She was 8 at the time. Though very expensive at $125 per month with $750 deductible per illness decided to go forward as thought if she got cancer or another illness would help with the Vet bills. The next year it increases to $137. Just a few days ago they increased to $225 per month! Almost double the cost of original premiums. I am just beside myside with upset over this. Had I known they could do this would never have taken out insurance with them. Not ever! They have never paid out a single claim. I had sent one bill in for anxiety related nail trim under sedation which they denied. They don't cover any regular annual visits either. They never paid out a single cent and then they double the rate. Gathering due to age and they claim because Vets have raised their rates.
They claim they care deeply for your pet. That they give you piece of mind knowing your pet will be covered- but could not be further from the truth. I wasted over $3000 on high premiums over the last 2 years which could have gone into a bank account for my dog's Vet care. I can't say how much I regret taking out this insurance and money gone into the hands of a greedy, money grubbing insurance company. All fluff. No care. I just looked up how much the company is worth. Showing over a billion dollars but that's not enough for them. They are going to squeeze their customers till they break. I was forced to cancel the policy as can no longer manage paying out this massive amount. Money wasted. Please take heed when taking out insurance with them- that they can keep raising rates to infinity. I didn't understand this or never would have wasted the money.

Updated on 04/02/2023: I am updating my previous review. Trupanion is absolutely the worse company I've ever dealt with. My dog needed 3 separate visits to the vet for his condition. It was the same condition-clearly stated on the medical records. Trupanion forced me to submit 3 separate claims. Then the deductible was applied 3 separate times so they didn't reach the deductible separately. Again even though the records said they were for the same condition. Then I was told to tell my vet to call into the appeals department. Really? What vet do you know that has that kind of free time to deal with the incompetency of an insurance company.
Now they are telling me it can take 4-6 weeks for the appeals process. I've paid my premiums on time every month for 11 years. And they are giving me the run-around over a payout that, by the time they take all their 'we don't pay this' deductions, will probably be about $500. And the appeals process will take 4-6 weeks! Over 10,000 dollars I've paid Trupanion and they are stalling so I'll just give up and move on. I have more claims to submit for the same condition and was told to wait until this decision is made. Just more stalling to prevent any payout whatsoever. Despicable.
Original Review: I've had Trupanion for the life of my dog so I've paid over 10K in premiums. I recently submitted two claims because he'd gone to two hospitals and their ridiculous webpage doesn't allow multiple hospital listings. One claim was denied and I've waited over a month now for the second. When I look on the website it says status 'open'. I finally called and they said they have no record of a second claim, saying it was deleted because it was a duplicate of the first. I'm fuming! I've waited for reimbursement and now I have to go through the whole hassle of resubmitting invoices and filing a claim because they have a broken down webpage that can't transmit things properly. The customer service agent was just as bad. 'Oh there's nothing we can do, I'm surprised you see the claim there because we have it as "deleted". What a joke. Borders on fraud if you ask me.

After the waiting period, he had a reaction to anesthesia from neutering over the weekend. He was violently throwing up, so I took him to the emergency vet. Trupanion did not cover it because he had what they called a pre-existing condition of – I am not kidding – throwing up! They call throwing up and nausea a pre-existing condition. He got another parasite (and yes, I give him Bravecto and Sentinel, I do everything I can to keep him healthy) - again, Trupanion did not cover it because he had had a parasite before. Unbelievable. I, like so many others on here, feel screwed over by Trupanion. I did a ton of research before joining less than two years ago for my 5 year old mixed breed rescue. I understand their business model and structure which is why I joined. However, they imply that premiums "may" go up by around 10 - 15% per year which is to be expected and reasonable. However, I've just been told my premium this year has gone up 50% despite no claims last year which means my premiums have DOUBLED in two years. I'm on the $1k deductible so there's no way for me to lower this. When I inquired and was given the spiel about how the prices are re-evaluated, how they sometimes see claims as high as $50k for a dog's care, I pointed out that within the next (hopefully at least) 8 years of life for my dog, I'll eventually be paying around $3k PER MONTH.
She said, "Well hopefully they won't keep doubling but it is possible." I may not be the best at math, but I think it's a much wiser financial plan to cancel the insurance instead of eventually paying $35,000 per year just in case we get hit with some crazy expensive illness which would probably still be way cheaper to pay for out of pocket than paying for this insurance.
The problem is now that my dog is almost 7, trying to go anywhere else means she has more pre-existing symptoms noted on her records and her older age will mean higher premiums coming into an insurance plan than they would've if I had joined two years ago. Thanks Trupanion, for making me realize what an incredible mistake I made by becoming a customer.

First of all, have some leeway. The vet recommended surgery less than 2 months before I enrolled. Secondly, thanks for absolutely nothing. It is stated in a couple of words on the coverage page you get after you sign up and is vaguely stated in their sample policy on the website. To get to the sample policy you have to click on a not-so-obvious link and scroll several pages until you find the information.
Our pup had multiple conditions whose total cost was $1200. All were "approved," but each condition has a separate $1,000 deductible. Translation: We got zip. The company claims that their policy benefits the customer because it's a lifetime deductible, but as I see it the only time they'll ever pay is if your pet has a long-term chronic condition or needs expensive surgery. If this policy is so fabulous, why isn't it clearly stated on the website?

ZERO STARS should be an option. Paying monthly amounts for this complete joke of “insurance” has been the absolute biggest waste of money. They do everything possible to deny your claim, including taking information from your vet that your animal is aggressive (find me a cat that likes going to the vet) and then denying your claim because your cat being attacked by another animal is their fault (my cat actually plays with other cats in the neighborhood).
My advice is put money into a bank account with every pay cheque. Had I done that, I would have easily covered the bill that I found out on Christmas Eve was completely denied. They refused to cover 1 penny of the almost $2000 I paid. And when they do cover an amount (my previous claim) I could have just saved up 2 payments and it would have made up that pitiful amount they gave me back. The even bigger disappointment is you do everything to help your pet recover, as you assume in good faith, your insurance will help you out. No back injury. Then she ran blood to test for Lyme disease. The results came back as Lyme disease. Trupanion refused to cover any of it, not even the x-ray to verify the first missed diagnosis.
Their reason? He didn’t have a lyme disease vaccine, when this vaccine has been proven to cause much suffering in dogs, especially tiny toy dogs. Trupanion also states that my dog had a prior condition of luxating patella. That condition had nothing to do with this diagnosis. No coverage at all, not even the x-ray to verify the missed diagnosis. Truepanion covered the missed diagnosis, of course using that money for the deduction but not the X-ray to prove the misdiagnosis! What a scam! Also, now my dog has a record of back trauma which will be considered a pre-existing condition in the future which is a lie!

I was looking for insurance that offered more coverage so switched from Healthy Paws to Trupanion. Big Mistake. I called first to make sure there would be no pre-existing condition clauses before I did and was assured there would not be so I signed up and canceled Healthy Paws. My puppy had two incidents, one was when he ate through an electrical cord and the other was for shaking for some unknown reason. Trupanion decided these two incidents constituted a foreign body exclusion on his policy. Even after I verified prior to joining it would not be. There was never a foreign body found in my dog. His shaking ended up being from fear of an appliance in my home.
Trupanion decided they would not cover any bill for foreign body because of those two incidents. Again, was proven he had NO FOREIGN BODY. I was able to go back to Healthy Paws and they agreed, no foreign body. DO NOT CHOOSE TRUPANION. They lied to me, misrepresented themselves to me and falsely claimed my dog had a foreign body when all medical records showed he had not. The person I spoke to before deciding to switch from Health Paws to them stated he was one of the founders of the company to try to get me to sign up. I later found he was not. Total dishonesty. DO NOT CHOOSE TRUPANION, THEY ARE DISHONEST.

Trupanion Pet Insurance, despite its marketing, is all about the bottom line and profit, which means customer service comes last. A year ago Trupanion sent an email about changing the deductible (never bothered to send a hardcopy). But the customer representative never made it clear that once you increase your deductible you can never lower it in the future. Dishonest.
Now I learn you can always to increase your deductible. This policy is all about profit, and getting customers into policies that make money for the company (at the expense of what is in the best interest of the customer). I complained about not be fully aware of never being able to lower the deductible, and they simply dismissed what I was saying. We sent you an email is all they said. Stay away. Spent 12, 11 and 2 years paying premiums for 3 dogs so I would never have to place money over their care should something happen. When my multipoo developed a spinal problem and needed emergency care, the nightmare began. I was looking at a $4K MRI and then surgery which would have been covered at 90% (or at least that is what they are telling me - I don't believe they would have come through on this for a minute). Instead, my vet wanted to use laser therapy because it was less invasive which came to $240. They denied it because they sent me a secret email over a year ago telling me I needed to pay more money for an additional rider. The bottom line is when it came time to use them, all I got was lip service. You are better putting your money in a savings account. I cancelled all 3 policies and plan to let everyone and anyone know to steer clear of this company.

Trupanion is the single best investment I've ever made. During the early days of the pandemic, my previous dog Huxley developed a serious but very treatable medical complication requiring a $7,000 surgery. I had been laid off a few months prior (along with most of the rest of my company) and simply couldn't afford it, so I lost my best friend in a horrible, traumatic way just because of bad timing. 18 months later, I adopted a new puppy and decided I'd never again risk a repeat of what happened to Huxley. After asking around, I learned from friends that Trupanion is the best pet insurance available because they're the only ones that will pay vets/hospitals directly. Other insurance providers may be cheaper, but if you don't have thousands of dollars upfront for a major procedure, it's completely pointless having them since they only reimburse. I enrolled my new puppy (Aubrey) within a month of adopting her.
Several months later it was time to take her in to get spayed. Unfortunately, she ended up developing a serious infection from the procedure and needed emergency surgery. Somewhat traumatically, the cost of the procedure was estimated to be nearly exactly what Huxley's surgery would have been: somewhere in the ballpark of $7,000. Luckily, Trupanion had my back. They approved Aubrey's claim within minutes and I only had to pay about $1k out of pocket altogether (since things like the hospital exam weren't covered, and there's a deductible). The several thousand dollars they covered was the difference between whether or not I'd be able to get her the help she needed, since I'm still rebuilding my savings from everything that happened in 2020.
It's been a week and a half since her surgery and she's recovering so well. She's got more energy than she knows what to do with. Her sutures come out sometime in the next couple days and then we can finally get back to spending hours at the dog park together. Thank you so much, Trupanion, for giving my 9-month-old puppy the chance to experience a full life. If you have a cat or dog, I can't recommend Trupanion enough. Even if your pet is young and healthy and you think they won't need veterinary care for years, you never know... and by the time you need it, it'll be too late to sign up. I keep telling my friends: please get your pet enrolled today so that you can get them the best care available, rather than having to potentially make heartbreaking decisions.

They have not paid, even with the latest clear cut dental surgery. When you call on the phone they are the nicest and try and placate you assuring you all will be taken care of. It never is. I do not know how they are legally allowed to do business this way. I think people get misled by the brochures in their vet's office. Our vet caught on and no longer displays them. I think many of us stick with them like a gambling addiction because we are in so deep. That is a good description based on how they do business, basically buy a lottery ticket. TL/DR: Company takes extreme approach to pre-existing conditions making connections that aren't reasonable just to avoid paying out. Example: Ear infection claim denied because in the notes the vet noted that I stated (me, not the vet) that my dog sometimes itched, which I thought was pointing to some underskin discomfort from her HOD, explained below). They made the connection that my statement that she was itchy sometimes likely meant that she had allergies, which likely caused the ear infection two years later. I can't make this up.
Purchased pet insurance on dog at 8 weeks old or younger. Two years later, filed my first claim as my dog started limping for an unknown reason on one foot, and also seemed to have an ear issue on the same side. Vet (same vet that did the insurability health check on my dog two years prior and the same vet that she has seen multiple times since then for regular health checks/vaccines) recommended X-Ray on shoulder where tenderness was to rule out displasia or shoulder OCD (which is where cartilage comes detached from bone). Vet required standard mild sedation for ear cleaning for ear infection and xrays and prescribed some mild pain meds for shoulder and ear infection medicine. X-Ray was negative which resulted in the vet concluding that this was a soft tissue damage (should must have run into something when playing with another dog perhaps).
Two years prior (when my dog was less than 8 weeks old), her whole body was in pain. Vet believes this was HOD (where puppies' bones grow too fast or something and blood supply to growth plates and makes it a very painful, or even deadly experience, for a puppy). HOD affected the entire body, and typically goes away after puppy stages. Given this history, I asked the vet if there was any way any of the items she was being seen for today had anything to do with the HOD she experienced as a puppy. She said no. (Pain in joint vs along the long bone, and a few other reasons). And then obviously they never have known her as a puppy to have ear infections nor saw anything that would lead them to believe there was a pre-existing condition at 8 weeks of a pre-existing condition for ear infections.
Both claims 100% denied. Shoulder pain claim denied on the fact that she had pains when she was 6-7 weeks old (no other logic connecting the underlying cause of the pain to current pain). Ear infection denied because in the notes the vet noted that I stated (me, not the vet) that she sometimes itched, which I thought was pointing to some underskin discomfort from her HOD. They made the connection that my statement that she was itchy sometimes likely meant that she had allergies, which likely caused the ear infection 2 years later. I've paid this company close to $3,000 over the last 2 years and this is the first claim experience I've had. Avoid this company at all costs unless your pre-inspection report is SUPER CLEAN.

I have paid for Trupanion for three years. With three dogs I paid close to $200 a month. As other have shared, they have repeatedly and continually increased prices. The last notice I received two weeks ago had the rates going up 20% on each pet for the third time. We also unfortunately lost our girl to cancer and she had many health issues caused because of the cancer due to her declining health. Instead of paying any portion of her many costly vet bills, Trupanion used the deductible of $1000 for every line item, thus never paying out a dime for any of her care although it all related to the same thing, Cancer.
They had many $1000 deductibles off the same claim as the doctor listed on the same invoice multiple diagnosis such as UTI, cancer, cyst, and each one created a $1000 deductible and they claimed each $1000 was our responsibility per policy. They paid nothing on her cancer issues and all the health problems cancer can cause. I will never use them again and highly recommend others to not ever use Trupanion. They are far too expensive, do not care about you and your pet, and do not want to pay the claims. It's apparent they have found loopholes so they can figure out ways to not pay your claims. We got Trupanion when we got our puppy thinking that Golden Retrievers are high risk for all sorts of issues. We started off paying $26.76/mo. with a $1,000 deductible when she was 1 year old. A year later, they upped it to $31.90. A year after that, another bump to $33.85. A month later, they upped it again to $34.72. 6-1/2 years later, we're paying $37.89. Our dog is doing great, but had a lump on her back and a growth in her mouth and discoloration on her nose. We took her to the Vet to get them checked out, and they gave us an estimate which we sent to Trupanion. Over $1000 bill and said they wouldn't pay a thing.
We had the surgery done, sent them our receipt, again, true to their word, they didn't pay. We've paid over $3000 in monthly payments and when we needed them, they wouldn't pay. We're canceling our subscription and not throwing more money after bad. It's a scam. Don't fall for it. Save the money you would otherwise pay Trupanion and use it when you need it. Up to this point we would have had to have over $4300 in medical bills for our dog just to break EVEN. And even then they pay only 90% of costs after that leaving you with paying 10% for the remainder of the medical. And if a DIFFERENT condition comes up, then you have to start all over again with the $1000 deductible. It's a scam. Don't pay. I'd give negative 5 stars if I could.

However, once they hit age milestones that make it difficult to switch, they start hitting you with the rate hikes. We’ve had multiple rate hikes exceeding 20% year over year. They want to get your in early, then price you out when you actually get to the age that there is some risk where you might need the insurance. I have had Trupanion pet insurance since 2015. First, my two cats were enrolled. At the age of about 6-8 years, one of my cats developed a terrible ear infection related to allergies. Trupanion would not reimburse me for vet bills claiming that the condition was preexisting. Since my cat was older, I believed in Trupanion and accepted their explanation for not providing monetary compensation for vet expenses.
In 2019, I purchased a baby standard poodle less than 3 months old. To complete the purchase and receive a copy of his papers, a vet had to give my poodle, Sir, a clean bill of health. As this task was completed, I enrolled him in the Trupanion pet health insurance program. On his wellness visit, the vet tech plucked my dog's ears. A week later I brought my poodle back to the vet, and he then had a bilateral ear infection. Sir was treated and did not have any other medical problems until after the 30-day grace period when the full policy was in effect.
Over the 3 years that I have had my poodle, he has had ear infections, scratchy skin, and some diarrhea. It was not until the beginning of 2021 that I learned that plucking a dog's ears can actually cause infections. I did not send my claims for vet care compensation to Trupanion within the 30 to 90 day period that they request as I have been very ill with Covid, anemia, an electrolyte imbalance, and an allergic response to something in my backyard.
When I did finally submit my claims earlier this year, reviewers immediately denied claims. I had to get one vet to write a statement that ear infections, eye infections, red lips, and diarrhea are all signs and symptoms of one disorder-allergies. The Trupanion claim analysts tried to say that each condition was separate.
Then, they asserted that my allergy claim was preexisting because Sir had an ear infection after the vet plucked his ears during the wellness visit. For a second time, I had to get the vet from that center to write a statement acknowledging that his assistant plucked my dog's ears and that this likely caused him to have the ear infection. After Sir's initial ear infection, my dog did not have another medical problem until the 30-day grace period was up. Yet, Trupanion refuses to cover my dog's monthly allergy shots.
I attempted to get help from a state agency in Atlanta, Georgia. However, after submitting my claim, the representative essentially told me that they are not lawyers and they do not have the authority to do very much. In this case, my representative wrote up my side and Trupanion's side of the issue, but nothing was resolved.
Please read the reviews on Consumer Affairs. I do not see any good reviews about Trupanion since 2018. These claim analysts are in a position of authority, and they look for ways to deny financial reimbursement to the customer. I have had Trupanion pet health insurance since 2015, and it was a huge mistake on my part. From this time forward, I will save money every month for pet health issues. I have stopped my contract with Trupanion this evening.
This is not a caring or compassionate company. This is an organization that is out to make a profit. Regardless of your pet's medical injury or illness, their claim analysts will call the shots and interpret vet records whatever way they see fit. If you look at the Trupanion website, they encourage people to enroll their pets when they are babies and before they have medical conditions. That is exactly what I did, and yet they have asserted that my poodle's allergy symptoms are preexisting.
I am a nurse, and I have medical knowledge. It is not difficult to read the notes written by people at a vet's office. Sir's allergies were not preexisting. Trupanion claim analysts simply do not want to pay for my dog's allergy shots. Shame on this organization for not having senior stockholders who will read these reviews and investigate on their own. As I wrote in the beginning, Run for your life away from Trupanion!

I purchased Pet Insurance for my 1 year old newly adopted dog in 2010. It was $34.00 per month and they said they would not raise the premium based on their age. They raised the premium steadily, year after year, so that I'm now paying $80.00+ per month. Their reason is the cost of vet services in my area. When there is an illness or injury, they carefully pick through which part of it is not covered, so if they examine your pet due to the injury or illness, that is not covered.
My dog had a broken tooth and abscess so I took her to a dental veterinarian specialist I was referred to. The bill was over $3,500 but Trupanion excluded things like x-ray and exam that was needed before they took the tooth out. I got back $600.00 only. If my dog wasn't 12 years old, I might have switched to another company but by now, I'm stuck. Obviously your experience will depend on your deductible, breed of dog and location, but my experience was extremely disappointing. We have an Old English Bulldog in Southern California and the monthly price was prohibitively expensive. My policy was $98.50 a month for a $500 deductible with the standard 90/10 split.
If our dog lived to be 7 years old and then had an illness, that's $8400 that we would pay in premiums, then add the $500 deductible would make it to where we would have to accrue nearly $10,000 in medical bills before the policy paid for itself. Conversely, we continue to pay for a wellness plan with another company that reduces office visit costs, covered spay, flea medication, and reduces diagnostic fees. I understand that there are situations that would require this kind of money for treatment, but it is just too much to be spending monthly for, what could end up, being nothing in return. Again, your experiences may be different, but we just could not find a way to afford the monthly expense and Trupanion had no interest in helping us find a more affordable option.

Unfortunately, 0 stars wasn't an option... I have worked at a vet clinic for 10+ years and did a lot of research on pet insurance. Trupanion was the one I chose because they offer a lifetime deductible per incident of the pet. I have recommended them to hundreds of clients over the years. That's how much I believed in this company. Mind you they only cover 90% after your deductible of non preventative things. So they don't cover exam fees, they don't cover vaccinations, or wellness visits, and they don't cover dental cleanings. I was all aware of that when I signed up.
My problem arose when my dog developed a food sensitivity (after 5 years of paying their deductibles) to her food. Her Vet put her on a PRESCRIPTION (aka can't get without a Dr.s Rx) dog food. I just found out that oh they conveniently don't cover PRESCRIPTION dog food for more than 2 months (before I could even pay off my deductible). I am beyond disappointed with this snake of a company. We recently signed up for Trupanion pet insurance when we purchased a new pure breed Maine Coon kitten. We were told the first month of coverage came with our kitten purchase and we activated the coverage with Trupanion the day we picked up our kitten. Our breeder had told us she was treating our kitten for a “little bit of a kitten cold,” which we disclosed to our vet as he had been on an antibiotic prior to us picking him up. She also told us she was treating the other cats in her cattery.
When we took him to our vet for his required wellness exam, our veterinarian discovered with an x-ray that he had a severe diaphragmatic hernia that involved his liver and all of his intestines. We proceeded with surgery that was required to save his life, but have gone over 7K in debt. The "kitten cold" became part of his vet records and Trupanion has now denied our claim on the basis we knew there was something wrong with him when we activated his policy. Certainly all the cats in the cattery did not have this condition. A “kitten cold” is a far cry from a diaphragmatic hernia.
Our vet and the surgeon both spoke with Trupanion on our behalf and our claim is still denied. Our breeder has done nothing to help us and Trupanion has been equally unhelpful. I would highly recommend spending your money with another pet insurance company. Trupanion is clearly all about the bottom line and not honoring their clients. This review should be enough to keep anyone from trusting these crooks. I've been a Trupanion customer for about five years. During this time, my two cats both developed new issues that Trupanion was happy to cover, and this was after they did a full comprehensive medical review on both the animals. This past month Trupanion made rule changes to their policy that now states they are reclassifying this condition as a pre-existing condition for these cats. Not because they discovered new information about my cats, and not because of any error of my own. Basically they were saying that if I tried to get insurance for the cats in 2016 again, their new policy would have identified them as having a pre-existing condition. But it's not 2016, it is 2021. Now that we are several years into the agreement, they are saying the new condition that appeared during these years is actually a pre-existing condition now.
And if they do this once, what's to say they won't do it again? I understand they may want to change their terms, but my pets should have been grandfathered in. And I've talked spoke with their customer rep and they agreed it was basically, yeah, kind of a crappy thing they did, but oh well, nothing to do about it. I'm dipping out of Trupanion. Their rates are already too high for what they cover (you can get the same stuff for cheaper from Pets Best + extra options). Obviously the new insurance I get will classify my cats' condition as pre-existing, but I'd rather find an honest company than one that will stab me in the back later.

Trupanion is not cost effective when you’ve got a large group of pets, especially when you factor in wellness checkups, dentals, bloodwork, etc. If you have a lot of rescues, like I do, steer clear. My policy costs continue to rise every year and I’ve used them for two emergencies over the course of the last 6 years. I’ve had to raise my deductible to keep my policies somewhat affordable. They say they don’t raise your policy based on age, but they raise your policy costs in other ways, so it comes out to be the same as if the policy increased due to your pet’s age. Especially now with the pandemic, with people not making as much as before, or even having a job at all, it’s difficult trying to cover your pet if something happens… and you don’t know so you continue paying the increasing policy costs.
I don’t understand why there aren’t more insurance companies, doctors and veterinarians, who would take these things into consideration. I wish they covered more with their policies, but to me, they are just another insurance company, nothing special. If you have a sickly pet, this company is for you, but if you have a large 4 legged family, as I do, steer clear.

I've written less than 2 negative reviews in my life. Here is my second. Their entire business model is a scam. I learned the hard way that their deductible limit is PER INCIDENT, and is not annual (like every other health insurance company out there for humans and pets). Honestly I don't even know how this is legal. They tout that they will cover a new condition for life once you meet your deductible for that specific incident/condition, but think about it... How many of you when your dogs are young or aged 1-5 will develop a chronic condition?? How easy will it be for them to dodge coverage claiming your vet visits are all unique incidents? And for those with older pets, remember, these pet insurance companies won’t cover pre-existing conditions! What a perfect business model for profits!
My experience with them has been horrendous as I'm paying an absurd monthly premium for a high deductible plan. Whereas, with literally every other pet insurance company I've been quoted for rates less than my current monthly premium, a much lower ANNUAL deductible that IS NOT PER INCIDENT, and 90% coverage. To get the same with Trupanion would have my monthly premium near the 3-digit range FOR A PUPPY. Good grief.
My puppy has gotten himself into trouble over the last year+ as he is very energetic, playful, and curious and I'm out thousands due to the handful of vet visits I've needed. And guess what, Trupanion hasn't covered anything. Why? Because none of the unique vet visits have exceeded my deductible. It literally resets every time. If you think about it..... You can visit the vet over a dozen times for various reasons and Trupanion doesn't have to cover anything if you don't meet your deductible for that specific incident/condition. They just sit back and collect the dough. Steer well clear of this company and their slimy business model. It is structured this way to ensure and maximize profits at the expense of actually doing what they exist to do.

I am extremely disappointed with Trupanion. Not only do they aggressively hike up monthly coverage costs (I am now paying well over $200 per dog, per month), they have an extremely liberal interpretation of "pre-existing condition." The way their claims adjusters justify denial of claims would not be supported by anyone with a reasonable sense of cause and effect. One of my dogs had a UTI, and they denied coverage because 3 years earlier she also had a UTI. What kind of reasoning is that? I wish I had not paid so much money to them over the years. I am actively researching alternatives.

He had a small growth on his skin. Denied. Reason? Allergies. The procedure to burn it off? Denied. Reason? Other (guess they couldn’t find a reason to deny that one, didn't stop them though). Do not spend your money here. Find another insurance company because Trupanion will have you paying a ton in premiums to cover ZERO.

On their website Trupanion claims that they will pay 50% for prescription pet food. The two times I got prescription pet food for my vet they did not pay 50%. They get around this by their policy of paying 90% payout for claims. They claim this applies to the prescription pet food and they end up paying 90% of their 50% share. That is not right. Since they say they pay 50% they should pay 50%. 50% means 50% of the total bill, not 90% of their 50% share. This is deceptive advertising.

Trupanion will deny your claims and rip you off. I bought the insurance for my dog Bruce when I got him. It turns out that he had aggression and behavior issues. Lucky for me that Trupanion covers that! Only they didn’t. They repeatedly denied claims. I was told that I need to get approval for a vet for Bruce to receive behavior modification training, which I did. They denied the claim and told me that he had to be under the direct supervision of behavior modification licensed vet. That service does not exist in Austin or anywhere nearby. Terrible service. They will take your money and do everything in their power not to pay out a claim. Run away from this company! Set aside the money yourself…. That is far more useful than this service.
