If I could give Trupanion a zero I would. I’ve been paying premium for 13 years just to be denied a claim when it was needed most. I suggest a savings account. Save your money people. What a rip off!!!

Do not by this pet insurance. It's not worth it. I pay almost $100 a month for one of my cats and get nothing covered. They also claim to be a Canadian company which is not correct. They also have refused all the claims that I submitted (yes it was only two) however coded them as preventative procedures and paid nothing. This is not true. Cancel if you have it and find another company that is truthful and not scamming us.

These people are criminals. Thieves. Several states are suing them. I assume they will end up prosecuted. They raise your rates massively, deny every claim, make everything as difficult as possible hoping you'll give up (if you have a life or job you won't have the time or money to fight them and they know it), and they hope you'll just cancel after paying premiums of thousands for years, and then your pet will get old and die in agony because you won't be able to provide the care your pet needs, when they actually get older and need it, after you've paid in the pet's entire young life. They do not care about animals or us humans who love them. These people belong in jail or Luigi'd. This company is criminal. Look at Yelp or BBB or anywhere else. This is absolutely illegal, and they need to be stopped.

Once again we were let down by Trupanion when we really needed them. Any major claim they find reasons to deny. This time because we waited too long to get the treatment for our dog. It is just one reason after another to deny, deny deny. But they sure are quick to raise the premiums. Trupanion is not there when you need them.

This company is a total scam. They never approve anything. As per the terms of insurance, a pet condition has a lifetime deductible. Once the deductible is reached, it should be fully covered. But, they never do this. You might as well throw your premium down the toilet.

If I could write a zero review I would. My 14 year old dog has been with Trupanion since she was 10 weeks old in 2011. We rarely had any claims until she reached about 12 years old. After paying our premiums for over 14 years, Trupanion is now taking almost 4 weeks to review a claim for a condition that has been covered for over 2 years. Our premium was also increased as our claims increased and when we appealed Trupanion’s decision to apply a deductible when it had already been paid for the same illness that occurred randomly over a multi-year timeframe…that happens when your dog reaches 14 years old. Unless your pet is unfortunate to have a chronic, catastrophic ailment, this may not be the insurance model or provider for you. Any breaks between the occurrence of the same ailment (of more than a few years), will be assessed as a new condition, and your deductible will restart.

We thought we would insure our 2 year old rescue. NOT WORTH IT. They cover NOTHING. Everything is considered “pre-existing“. Save your money, keep the money you’d waste on this and set it aside to use for your pet. Live and learn, pet insurance is a scam for rescue pets.

Never pay out. Make up condition based on their own diagnosis without evidence. Also they say they don’t increase cost as a dog ages but my rates have climbed every year a lot. Originally was 65 and now 4 years later is 170. This company are crooks. My personal office doesn’t even auto submit claims anymore because of shady policies this company employs to deny coverage. By the way, she has never had a single incident that has been approved for coverage.

I had signed up for Trupanion pet insurance after reading good reviews. Now my dog had a CCL rupture and needs surgery. They refused to cover ANY costs because they classified limping as a pre-existing illness. After my vet send them a lengthy letter (as seen in picture) they STILL denied coverage saying they do not cover any CCL injuries that occur within 18 MONTHS!!!! Absolute waste of time and money. My vet hates them too. Have cancelled my subscription.

My dog's breeder advised that we insure with Trupanion and asked that I use her name in the sign up. First red flag as obviously kickbacks were an incentive, certainly not based on good service. I was sold a "full coverage" policy, assured that beyond my $500 deductible for emergencies, or any other illness related issue, I could rest knowing they had our backs. My 14 month old Standard Poodle has been insured since a 12 week old healthy pup. There have been no claims until a few days ago when she inexplicably became very ill and spend 2 days in Emerg being diagnosed and treated. The bill was in excess of $1200. After Trupanion had cherrypicked their way through the treatment, we paid over $1000 and our "full coverage" insurance paid $200! What a scam! Do not waste your money on these snakes. Shame on companies like this who simply steal from a too trusting public.

Insurance scam. Save your money every month instead of paying them. I got three pets with them paying 200 a month for three years. Never file a single claim, one day I found my cat has “teeth resorption” issue, they denied my claim, and claim that I passed the three month since my vet diagnosed my cat could have that problem. And they said even the claim got approved, half of the claim aren’t covered. You still gotta pay it yourself. It will end up paying 50-60% yourself (inspection fee, teeth cleaning fee, pre surgery inspection fee, deductible fee, 10% of claim). Come on, Instead of giving you guys money I rather put $200 into my Pet’s Saving account every month. TRUPANION is totally useless, Paid over $6000 in the past three years for nothing.

Every claim we've submitted has been denied for one reason or another. Most recently, we filed one for our dog's allergies, which have been causing recurring ear infections. At first, it was approved and applied to our deductible. But a few weeks later, they reversed the decision and told us it wouldn’t be covered—because it's now considered a pre-existing condition.
Apparently, the dog’s previous owner once took him to the vet for itching (a totally different issue, long before we adopted him), and that alone was enough for them to deny the claim. So now for the rest of his life, they won't cover anything allergy related. We’re super disappointed and seriously considering canceling the policy and switching to another company. Either way, we’re stuck now—because his allergies are officially marked as pre-existing. And just to top it off, they raised our premium by $20/month at the start of the year.

Do not use TRUPANION pet insurance. As a 7 year customer I did not receive anything for the monthly premium I paid for 7+ years. The 1 claim I did submit was denied because of the fine print in their policy. The bottom line is the formula they use to set deductibles and offer coverage is designed in a way that you would be better off paying out of pocket for services and saving your monthly premium payments for catastrophic events. This service is such a scam!

Classic insurance company. Will deny coverages for existing conditions but charge you like you're getting covered for absolutely everything. I think my premiums just about doubled in 6 years with no claims. My personal experience would have cost me over 7000 dollars for the term of my policy to be rejected on my first and only claim to cover to euthanize my pet versus putting him through a 3rd back surgery which wouldn't have been covered by them either. Apparently if the reasoning for being euthanized has anything to do with a prior condition they won't cover it... it's not about the couple of dollars I didn't get reimbursed but more about the slimy reasoning that they use to justify this denial all while keeping their hands out for your ever-increasing monthly payment. Do yourself a favor and put the equivalent In a savings account.

Be very careful about spending the extra money for their "Recovery and Complementary Care Rider." In their “Recovery and Complementary Care Rider” part C, Hydrotherapy, Trupanion states the following: “Hydrotherapy involves the use of water to aid in the healing and/or conditional of a patient. Pets either swim in a pool or tank prescribed periods of time, or, walk on an underwater treadmill. Hydrotherapy is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, orthopedic conditions, neurological conditions and muscle, ligament and other soft tissue injuries. The therapy must be recommended by Your Veterinarian and it must be provided by or under the Direct Supervision of Your Veterinarian.”
My dog’s licensed Veterinarian recommended hydrotherapy for my dog, Dolly. I submitted her letter of recommendation and her medical plan which also recommended warm water swimming to help with Dolly’s degenerative disc disease and arthritis. The facility I go to, Fido Physio, provides regular updates to the Supervising Veterinarian and the therapy is provided by a person who is a member in good standing of the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork/Association of Canine Water Therapy, and, a Certificate of Canine Aquatic Therapy.
When they denied my claim I filed an appeal with all of the above information and noted that I didn’t know of any Veterinarian Clinics that had warm water pools which Dolly’s doctor felt would be better for Dolly’s condition than a treadmill. When Trupanion denied the claim again they said that the therapy must be provided by “staff under direct veterinarian supervision. (No Veterinarian has the time to watch your dog swim, or, for that matter walk on an underwater treadmill) Alternatively, Physical Rehabilitation services may also be provided by a Certified Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT, CCRA, CCRP, CCRVN, VMRT, Diplomate Canine Rehab from Canadian Physiotherapy Association) if referred by a veterinarian. Because the requirement for a Certified Rehabilitation Therapist is not included in the Policy Rider, I believe the rider is made in Bad Faith.

SCAM ALERT!!! Beware of this company and their deceptive sales practices! I got a coupon code for a month's free service to try it out, called, gave them the code and the person said, "Great. Let's set you up!" Went through the sign-up, and at no time was told that the code would not be honored. They ended up billing me for the first month and refused to refund the charges. I cancelled the policy - if they won't honor their promotion how can I trust they will honor any claims? Clearly a shady business, stay clear of them!

I agree with the others distrust and disgust in Trupanion. We picked up our 6 month old female doodle and went to the vet that same day for a checkup. The breeder we got her from supposedly works with trupanion and was covered for 30 days. We called and set her up with an insurance policy that same day, if not the day after. Her initial diagnostics at the vet visit caught that she had hookworm. I submitted invoices to Trupanion and they told me that wasn't covered due to it being "preventative". The breeder was notified and ghosted us when we mentioned the issues.
Trupanion told me I needed to go after the drug companies themselves. In addition, my dog was seen for a UTI twice, and was put on a prescription diet. Those invoices were submitted and were partially applied towards individual deductibles based on condition. We have paid a total of $944.72 to trupanion, in addition to all the other costs that we have incurred with our pet. Trupanion has paid us $0.

This place is a scam. Our premiums keep going up around 20-30% every year or two. They don't pay anything for claims and try to weasel their way out of any issues that arise. We had a claim for dental cleaning and they refused to pay it due to the vet putting he had dental disease 3 months prior in our dog's chart. Now I called them requesting if they would cover his follow up cleanings that are required due to his dental disease and they told me that they don't cover cleanings now!? Highly recommend avoiding this business and put away money into a savings account for any future vet bills.

Trupanion had good reviews and seemed like a quality company. It was easy to set up and my vet took it with no problem… on the few things they would pay for. I used them for just short of two years because they increased premiums by about 30% every year which is completely unaffordable and vastly higher than inflation or my vet's cost increases were rising.

I signed up through a vet promotion, unaware it required an appointment within 24 hours. Trupanion took nearly two months just to clarify that, then denied all three of my pet’s visits. I ended up paying almost $200 for nothing, and one of their managers refused to adjust the charges. There are better, faster, and more affordable pet insurance options out there. Trupanion is slow to make decisions and far more expensive than most. Save your money and look elsewhere!

I recently got a puppy, and the first owners had a one-month insurance policy with Trupanion, which I were encouraged to renew. During a routine vet visit for vaccinations, our vet noticed that our 8-week-old puppy had an ear infection. When I called Trupanion, they assured that this issue would be covered under the policy. But when I submitted my claim, I was suddenly informed that nothing could be covered because I would have to pay 250 CAD out of pocket. Where is this stated in writing? I have never even received my contract documents. When I asked about it in the chat, I was told that the contract was sent as an attachment with the first email—but there was no attachment in that email. When I pointed this out, the response was simply, "It doesn’t matter, we can send it to you now." This is highly unprofessional and misleading.
The deductible of 250 CAD per condition makes the monthly premium essentially pointless—especially for a puppy. Taxes are not covered, nor are routine check-ups or vaccinations, despite the high monthly rates. This is extremely disappointing, and I can’t help but feel deceived by these practices. New pet owners are already anxious and adjusting, and this kind of dishonesty only adds to the stress. Trupanion has shown zero care or compassion and seems more focused on collecting premiums than supporting pets or their owners. Avoid Trupanion. They are nothing more than scammers preying on vulnerable pet owners.

They will fight tooth and nail to deny coverage. I have a dog with a newly diagnosed illness who needed an endoscopy for said diagnosis. They denied covering the procedure even after filing an appeal with the help of my vet. They are greedy and will say something is pre-existing when it is not. I have had coverage with them since 2023 and receive the diagnosis in November, 2024.

Dishonest and Misleading—Avoid Trupanion. We recently got a puppy, and the first owners had a one-month insurance policy with Trupanion, which we were encouraged to renew. During a routine vet visit for vaccinations, our vet noticed that our 14-week-old puppy had lower canines growing into the upper inner gums—a teething issue that had just started. When we called Trupanion, we spoke with Amanda from Sales, who assured us that this issue would be covered under the policy if we renewed. Trusting her word, we renewed the policy.
However, after our vet submitted a pre-approval for the extraction procedure, Trupanion denied the claim, stating it was a pre-existing condition. This was never raised as an issue during renewal. When we called back to contest the decision, they continued to make excuses, eventually claiming the issue was reported within 30 days of renewal and therefore ineligible.
Why are we paying such high premiums for a company that denies valid claims using vague and shifting excuses? They misled us into renewing the policy with assurances of coverage, only to leave us with no support when we needed it most. This is especially infuriating as it concerns a young, 14-week-old puppy just starting to teethe—something no one could predict. It feels like Trupanion is exploiting pet owners, offering false assurances while denying legitimate claims under the guise of "pre-existing conditions."

What they refuse to cover is very extensive. They will go over any and all vet records dating back to when you first got the dog. If your dog so much had a runny nose then they don’t support respiratory issues. If your dog ever sprained her leg, then they don’t cover arthritis or torn or ruptured ligaments. If your dog has ever acted as if she’s in pain then they don’t cover hip dysplasia or arthritis. If your dog ever had a cough, then they won’t cover respiratory issues. And I mean ever if your dog is 10 years old, they will count stuff from when your dog was six months old. What they do cover is practically nothing once they’re done reviewing all your Vet records.

If there is any possibility to connect your pet's diagnosis to to any medical record, vet tech note, or any explanation in your pet's complete medical history, your claim will be denied. My dog has SRMA- on 10mg prednisone to maintain/ keep her immune disease under control for last 12 months. Paid premium's for 6 months. Dog chewed a stick, got a small cut that became an abscess, needed $3500 hospital visit to image/drain/stitch abscess. Insurance denied both claim and appeal stating the prednisone suppresses her immune system and that caused the abscess. Glad we only wasted 6 months of premiums. Just save your $ premiums into a sinking fund, to spend on the dog if you ever need the ER visit. Don't waste your time or money with pet insurance. They don't pay.

Pet parents run from Trupanion. When your dear pet gets sick and you start submitting claims, they continually process claims without reaching out to the veterinarian medical provider for medical information, therefore processing each claim submitted as a new (PER) condition claim, therefore making a bottomless deductible. The continuous response is you can go through the appeal process.
This practice hopes that the consumer doesn’t go through the appeal process so that Trupanion does not have to pay on an insurance claim. I personally have experienced this over and over and over again, submitting claims for a condition that is not new and should not be processed as a PER condition deductible. This is not an insurance company you want to go with because when your pet get sick, you will not be reimbursed because they will apply it to their per condition bottomless deductible and then tell you to appeal it. Not once did they ever reach out to the veterinarian to obtain medical records and process the claim correctly. Run from Trupanion.
