I, like so many others on here, feel screwed over by Trupanion. I did a ton of research before joining less than two years ago for my 5 year old mixed breed rescue. I understand their business model and structure which is why I joined. However, they imply that premiums "may" go up by around 10 - 15% per year which is to be expected and reasonable. However, I've just been told my premium this year has gone up 50% despite no claims last year which means my premiums have DOUBLED in two years. I'm on the $1k deductible so there's no way for me to lower this. When I inquired and was given the spiel about how the prices are re-evaluated, how they sometimes see claims as high as $50k for a dog's care, I pointed out that within the next (hopefully at least) 8 years of life for my dog, I'll eventually be paying around $3k PER MONTH.

She said, "Well hopefully they won't keep doubling but it is possible." I may not be the best at math, but I think it's a much wiser financial plan to cancel the insurance instead of eventually paying $35,000 per year just in case we get hit with some crazy expensive illness which would probably still be way cheaper to pay for out of pocket than paying for this insurance.

The problem is now that my dog is almost 7, trying to go anywhere else means she has more pre-existing symptoms noted on her records and her older age will mean higher premiums coming into an insurance plan than they would've if I had joined two years ago. Thanks Trupanion, for making me realize what an incredible mistake I made by becoming a customer.

They don't pay out claims. They don't pay out claims. They are scammers!! Furthermore, they made me submit all the invoices separately as a result of one incident, and then declined since it didn't meet the minimum. It's one claim, not 4 different ones. Also, they are declining the claim due to a pre-existing condition, which my dog never had. All this after paying them, $17000 in premium over the years!!! Stay away!!!

Trupanion claimed that multiple claims for allergy-related excessive licking were "behavioral," and not covered. They never paid any of the claims. I canceled when they raised the rate and had a difficult time getting them to confirm cancellation. I have nothing good to say about them.

Is a scam! they lure you with reasonable annual payment and tell you over the phone that should not be any increases in your dog policy or worst case 10% -15%. When your dog becomes 2 years old, they DUPLICATE the monthly payment!! Imagine what they will do when your dog becomes 3, 4, 5... years old! A TOTAL SCAM! STAY AWAY!!!

I took my dog to the vet, and they recommended I call Trupanion and get insurance for my puppy. I already had pet insurance for 2 months but I called them and the man I spoke with and I had a lovely chat about what was happening and why I wanted pet insurance. He convinced me to switch to their company from my current provider - Fetch. Now they won't honor a claim that I would have had covered by Fetch. $1500 gone!

I filed a claim with Trupanion and they denied it claiming that we had a pre-existing health issue from over three years ago. We joined Trupanion after our dog required Veterinary care after by being bitten by a copperhead snake, a venomous snake. Our recent claim was for a serious intestinal problem which clearly was not caused by a snake bite. They initially denied the claim. Now I got an email when they entered the appeal into their system. Now two weeks later I have gotten an email saying that they are reviewing the appeal. It was their mistake, it should have gotten to the head of their queue. I have started researching law firms that have successfully sued Trupanion.

I have insured my dog for just about a year now for pet health insurance when Trupanion raised my rate from $136 per month to $164 per month even though I have not had a single claim. I was just about to insure my second dog but will not use Trupanion because of the cost. My premiums would be approximately $328 per month. Extrapolated over the lifetime of say 14 years you would have invested almost $55,000. This is more than my house insurance and auto insurance combined. Not great value. They sent me a sugar coated "friendly" message about how they need to raise the rates appealing to one's emotions about their pets. They really put me off about this. I don't trust Trupanion at all.

Please, if you know what's good for you, STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCAM. Zero stars if I could. This was my first experience with a pet insurance carrier and will also probably be the last. It's a shame a group of money-hungry people couldn't be more sympathetic to my situation and made my first experience better. I've had two indoor cats for more than seven years, right? They never had any major health problems, so I didn't mind the yearly vet visit. Then a few months back they told me my cat Strider would probably need a dental surgery. I thought, "hey, that might be a pretty penny. I'm going to look into getting some pet insurance to help us pay for it." Guess what. His surgery cost more than $2000, and they didn't want to contribute a thing. They claimed he had a preexisting condition before I enrolled with them.

First of all, have some leeway. The vet recommended surgery less than 2 months before I enrolled. Secondly, thanks for absolutely nothing. We are not rich by any means, and were really banking on that reimbursement to help us out. Trupanion is an awful company who don't care and just want your money. I did my due diligence and researched them thoroughly before enrolling, but in the end it didn't matter. Please just stay away. Have a rainy day fund instead of giving your hard-earned money to these thieves. They just don't care.

After reading so many bad reviews, I have to add my own comments. I insured my new 8 month old puppy with Trupanion when I first brought her home. Like so many, I feel their website doesn't give full details of how their coverage works. My puppy is celebrating her first birthday day and I don't think for a minute that it's a coincidence that I received an email from Trupanion today informing me that my monthly premium is increasing from 109.99 to 143.00 per month. Seriously considering cancelling my policy.

I was a 10 year customer of Trupanion Pet Insurance for 10 years, my recommendation is stay away from this insurance company. If they can be ruthless to a 10 year customer with 2 dogs, can you imagine how they will treat a new customer? My dog was dying in the emergency room and the customer service agent was rude, curt, unsympathetic and condescending on the phone. The last thing I would be doing while my dog is in the ER would be talking to a customer service agent for my insurance. And to top it off, they denied my claim when my dog was already enrolled prior to his anaphylactic shock.

I signed up for Trupanion this year with a $1,000 deductible. Nowhere on their main website page does it say that the deductible is per illness or injury for life. It is stated in a couple of words on the coverage page you get after you sign up and is vaguely stated in their sample policy on the website. To get to the sample policy you have to click on a not-so-obvious link and scroll several pages until you find the information.

Our pup had multiple conditions whose total cost was $1200. All were "approved," but each condition has a separate $1,000 deductible. Translation: We got zip. The company claims that their policy benefits the customer because it's a lifetime deductible, but as I see it the only time they'll ever pay is if your pet has a long-term chronic condition or needs expensive surgery. If this policy is so fabulous, why isn't it clearly stated on the website?

ZERO STARS should be an option. Paying monthly amounts for this complete joke of “insurance” has been the absolute biggest waste of money. They do everything possible to deny your claim, including taking information from your vet that your animal is aggressive (find me a cat that likes going to the vet) and then denying your claim because your cat being attacked by another animal is their fault (my cat actually plays with other cats in the neighborhood).

My advice is put money into a bank account with every pay cheque. Had I done that, I would have easily covered the bill that I found out on Christmas Eve was completely denied. They refused to cover 1 penny of the almost $2000 I paid. And when they do cover an amount (my previous claim) I could have just saved up 2 payments and it would have made up that pitiful amount they gave me back. The even bigger disappointment is you do everything to help your pet recover, as you assume in good faith, your insurance will help you out. Only to be slapped in the face that they’ve not only taken their over-priced monthly payments from you but then tell you they aren’t covering any of it.

I purchased pet insurance for my 8 month old pug. It was expensive, 89.53 a month. Never had need for it and then they raised my bill to 121.38, quoting inflation. More like greed. I cancelled right away.

My puppy injured herself and had to get stitches in September. It is now December and they are fighting everything in them and is giving me the run around to pay her medical bill which all of her related appointments had exceeded our deductible. This company is a total rip-off and isn’t worth the $56 a month and is not benefiting my puppy and her needed. If you want to basically give away free money go right ahead, if not I advise shopping around.

I have (had) 3 pets insured with them and not once have they covered anything. The last time I tried to claim a newly prescribed medication, they said it wasn't covered but I could get an add-on, I said yes please to the add-on and THEN they told me I couldn't get the add-on because I've been with them too long! A lot of insurance companies are tough to deal with but Trupanion seems more deceptive than any of them because they'll claim to be "animal lovers", but the only thing Trupanion loves is taking your money. Be careful with them, the agents are nice and they'll talk to you about how sweet and cute your pet is, and sure, they might think so, but remember, it's their job, say "thank you", hang up the phone and continue looking for another company. Good luck to all you pet parents, it's a "dog eat dog" world in the pet insurance business.

Trupanion pet insurance is not transparent nor honest. I had them for a year and never made a claim. A friend warned me of them so I called to review coverage. Turns out they will not cover teeth nor hip because they consider them pre-existing. My dog never had teeth nor hip problems but when seen by a vet 2 years ago for vomiting was noted to have minor teeth issue and hip dysplasia. When I signed up for Trupanion they dug up, from prior vet visits, all the medical information they could to enhance the pre-existing conditions. They never informed me of what they decided not to cover. They were not transparent. Be careful as their exclusion criteria is long, vague and will be applied without your knowledge. You will continue to pay premiums then when you need them they may have found a way to consider a medical problem pre-existing.

Better off setting your own pet account. Covered $9 on a $1500 bill. No pre existing conditions. Have paid thousands in premiums for nothing. Took over a month for them to review and then they decide to apply double the deductible for 1 procedure. Save your money. Trupanion is a like a scam to me.

If you want to pay Trupanion to protect your pet, make sure of your pet's history, because a minimum exam will NOT be paid with a minimum problem you have had. My example is with cats. They usually have urine infections, even if they are minimal and if you later put a Trupanion insurance on them, even if it is a small urine infection. When your cat is older and as almost always happens, your cat has kidney problems, he will not pay any of these expenses that you have in this regard. In other words. look with the same magnifying glass to enroll them and spend that monthly money because they will look with a bigger magnifying glass so as not to pay you. Also, as soon as they got my first medical bills after 3 years, they sent a note that my insurance would go from $120 to $160.

Horrible experience with this company that will always find a way to not cover your claims. My dog had a treatment resistant eye infection so when I went to see a specialist they claimed the specialist consultation was not covered!! They will always find a reason to deny your claim or pay you back less than your monthly premium. By the way their denials cannot be appealed!!

I paid close to $600 for the ophthalmologist that my vet referred me to for a previously reported condition and still they covered only $60 when the monthly premium is $75. Do yourself a favor and save your money by saving the premiums until you need to pay the vet. Avoid this company!!

When I signed up in the big bullet points - it said "What is not covered" "routine pet visits and preventative care". But when my dog got sick it did not cover the vet exam either - of which was not boldly on their site - and that part of the bill was the most expensive because it was after hours - they are deceptive in their dealings - when I looked at 5 other pet insurances up front you capped and the vet visit into your plan and they are clear.

My breeder recommended Trupanion and I enrolled my Mini Dachshund the same day we brought her home at 8 weeks of age. Shortly after that, she was stung or bitten in the face by something in the garden and her face swelled up to twice its normal size. She was obviously in distress. It was the weekend and our regular vet's office was closed, so we rushed to the emergency vet an hour away. They treated her and kept her under observation for several hours. The bill was $260. We knew $200 would go towards the deductible but expected Trupanion to pay 90% of the balance.

That was 3 months ago. They have found one reason after another to tell us the claim is still "under review." I have cheerfully provided any information they requested and resolved any problems they said were delaying processing. For example, when I inquired about status after 2 months, they said the vet refused to provide them with the necessary medical history. I made one phone call and it was done. Clearly they do not want to pay this claim. Frankly I am so disgusted with their false advertising and terrible customer service that I am probably going to cancel coverage even if they do pay.

Terrible experience with Trupanion! My dog was misdiagnosed by a vet, claiming he had back trauma without doing any testing to verify his “diagnosis.”. This doctor refused to run a Lyme disease test. My poor 5 pound dog suffered for a month. Then, he started limping and we knew something was wrong so we took him to another vet. That vet ran an x-ray to verify if he had indeed any back injury. No back injury. Then she ran blood to test for Lyme disease. The results came back as Lyme disease. Trupanion refused to cover any of it, not even the x-ray to verify the first missed diagnosis.

Their reason? He didn’t have a lyme disease vaccine, when this vaccine has been proven to cause much suffering in dogs, especially tiny toy dogs. Trupanion also states that my dog had a prior condition of luxating patella. That condition had nothing to do with this diagnosis. No coverage at all, not even the x-ray to verify the missed diagnosis. Truepanion covered the missed diagnosis, of course using that money for the deduction but not the X-ray to prove the misdiagnosis! What a scam! Also, now my dog has a record of back trauma which will be considered a pre-existing condition in the future which is a lie!

I was looking for insurance that offered more coverage so switched from Healthy Paws to Trupanion. Big Mistake. I called first to make sure there would be no pre-existing condition clauses before I did and was assured there would not be so I signed up and canceled Healthy Paws. My puppy had two incidents, one was when he ate through an electrical cord and the other was for shaking for some unknown reason. Trupanion decided these two incidents constituted a foreign body exclusion on his policy. Even after I verified prior to joining it would not be. There was never a foreign body found in my dog. His shaking ended up being from fear of an appliance in my home.

Trupanion decided they would not cover any bill for foreign body because of those two incidents. Again, was proven he had NO FOREIGN BODY. I was able to go back to Healthy Paws and they agreed, no foreign body. DO NOT CHOOSE TRUPANION. They lied to me, misrepresented themselves to me and falsely claimed my dog had a foreign body when all medical records showed he had not. The person I spoke to before deciding to switch from Health Paws to them stated he was one of the founders of the company to try to get me to sign up. I later found he was not. Total dishonesty. DO NOT CHOOSE TRUPANION, THEY ARE DISHONEST.

Trupanion Pet Insurance, despite its marketing, is all about the bottom line and profit, which means customer service comes last. A year ago Trupanion sent an email about changing the deductible (never bothered to send a hardcopy). But the customer representative never made it clear that once you increase your deductible you can never lower it in the future. Dishonest.

Now I learn you can always to increase your deductible. This policy is all about profit, and getting customers into policies that make money for the company (at the expense of what is in the best interest of the customer). I complained about not be fully aware of never being able to lower the deductible, and they simply dismissed what I was saying. We sent you an email is all they said. Stay away. This company could not give a damn about you or your pet.

Spent 12, 11 and 2 years paying premiums for 3 dogs so I would never have to place money over their care should something happen. When my multipoo developed a spinal problem and needed emergency care, the nightmare began. I was looking at a $4K MRI and then surgery which would have been covered at 90% (or at least that is what they are telling me - I don't believe they would have come through on this for a minute). Instead, my vet wanted to use laser therapy because it was less invasive which came to $240. They denied it because they sent me a secret email over a year ago telling me I needed to pay more money for an additional rider. The bottom line is when it came time to use them, all I got was lip service. You are better putting your money in a savings account. I cancelled all 3 policies and plan to let everyone and anyone know to steer clear of this company.

Trupanion is the single best investment I've ever made. During the early days of the pandemic, my previous dog Huxley developed a serious but very treatable medical complication requiring a $7,000 surgery. I had been laid off a few months prior (along with most of the rest of my company) and simply couldn't afford it, so I lost my best friend in a horrible, traumatic way just because of bad timing. 18 months later, I adopted a new puppy and decided I'd never again risk a repeat of what happened to Huxley. After asking around, I learned from friends that Trupanion is the best pet insurance available because they're the only ones that will pay vets/hospitals directly. Other insurance providers may be cheaper, but if you don't have thousands of dollars upfront for a major procedure, it's completely pointless having them since they only reimburse. I enrolled my new puppy (Aubrey) within a month of adopting her.

Several months later it was time to take her in to get spayed. Unfortunately, she ended up developing a serious infection from the procedure and needed emergency surgery. Somewhat traumatically, the cost of the procedure was estimated to be nearly exactly what Huxley's surgery would have been: somewhere in the ballpark of $7,000. Luckily, Trupanion had my back. They approved Aubrey's claim within minutes and I only had to pay about $1k out of pocket altogether (since things like the hospital exam weren't covered, and there's a deductible). The several thousand dollars they covered was the difference between whether or not I'd be able to get her the help she needed, since I'm still rebuilding my savings from everything that happened in 2020.

It's been a week and a half since her surgery and she's recovering so well. She's got more energy than she knows what to do with. Her sutures come out sometime in the next couple days and then we can finally get back to spending hours at the dog park together. Thank you so much, Trupanion, for giving my 9-month-old puppy the chance to experience a full life. If you have a cat or dog, I can't recommend Trupanion enough. Even if your pet is young and healthy and you think they won't need veterinary care for years, you never know... and by the time you need it, it'll be too late to sign up. I keep telling my friends: please get your pet enrolled today so that you can get them the best care available, rather than having to potentially make heartbreaking decisions.

I have been with Trupanion for seven years. Over that time I have paid over 15 thousand in premiums for two dogs. I have attempted three claims which my Vet said should be legitimately covered. They have not paid, even with the latest clear cut dental surgery. When you call on the phone they are the nicest and try and placate you assuring you all will be taken care of. It never is. I do not know how they are legally allowed to do business this way. I think people get misled by the brochures in their vet's office. Our vet caught on and no longer displays them. I think many of us stick with them like a gambling addiction because we are in so deep. That is a good description based on how they do business, basically buy a lottery ticket. Buyer beware, this is an institutionally supported ripoff.

TL/DR: Company takes extreme approach to pre-existing conditions making connections that aren't reasonable just to avoid paying out. Example: Ear infection claim denied because in the notes the vet noted that I stated (me, not the vet) that my dog sometimes itched, which I thought was pointing to some underskin discomfort from her HOD, explained below). They made the connection that my statement that she was itchy sometimes likely meant that she had allergies, which likely caused the ear infection two years later. I can't make this up.

Purchased pet insurance on dog at 8 weeks old or younger. Two years later, filed my first claim as my dog started limping for an unknown reason on one foot, and also seemed to have an ear issue on the same side. Vet (same vet that did the insurability health check on my dog two years prior and the same vet that she has seen multiple times since then for regular health checks/vaccines) recommended X-Ray on shoulder where tenderness was to rule out displasia or shoulder OCD (which is where cartilage comes detached from bone). Vet required standard mild sedation for ear cleaning for ear infection and xrays and prescribed some mild pain meds for shoulder and ear infection medicine. X-Ray was negative which resulted in the vet concluding that this was a soft tissue damage (should must have run into something when playing with another dog perhaps).

Two years prior (when my dog was less than 8 weeks old), her whole body was in pain. Vet believes this was HOD (where puppies' bones grow too fast or something and blood supply to growth plates and makes it a very painful, or even deadly experience, for a puppy). HOD affected the entire body, and typically goes away after puppy stages. Given this history, I asked the vet if there was any way any of the items she was being seen for today had anything to do with the HOD she experienced as a puppy. She said no. (Pain in joint vs along the long bone, and a few other reasons). And then obviously they never have known her as a puppy to have ear infections nor saw anything that would lead them to believe there was a pre-existing condition at 8 weeks of a pre-existing condition for ear infections.

Both claims 100% denied. Shoulder pain claim denied on the fact that she had pains when she was 6-7 weeks old (no other logic connecting the underlying cause of the pain to current pain). Ear infection denied because in the notes the vet noted that I stated (me, not the vet) that she sometimes itched, which I thought was pointing to some underskin discomfort from her HOD. They made the connection that my statement that she was itchy sometimes likely meant that she had allergies, which likely caused the ear infection 2 years later. I've paid this company close to $3,000 over the last 2 years and this is the first claim experience I've had. Avoid this company at all costs unless your pre-inspection report is SUPER CLEAN.

I am a 10 YEAR CUSTOMER with multiple pets so listen VERY CAREFULLY. TRUPANION FACTS:

    1) Raises premiums every year with or without claims. I have been lucky with my pets as I have not had many claims. I have 1 large claim and now comes the denial for a covered illness. I have spent 20,000 dollars in premiums over 10 years!
    2) Only small claims written out very carefully by your vet without any vague terms will be paid.
    3) They add exclusions to your policy as they receive an increase of claims in that area so they don’t have payouts.
    4) Any Appeal you do is just to give you a false impression that the outcome will change. It’s just to get rid of a furious customer for a few weeks. They try to drag it out until you give up on the claim.
    5) Their business model is fake compassion to take advantage of animal lovers and rescuers. The only pure love a human can receive is from an animal and TRUPANION VULTURES are there to exploit the kind souls that love animals.
    6) TRUPANION is like a SHADY homeowner insurance company that would deny paying a roof claim and close up shop after a hurricane.

    7) TRUPANION is a MISLEADING FALSE ADVERTISING business model.

Trupanion Canada has honoured the terms of service in a timely, uncomplicated way. Unlike human insurance they do not make you jump through hoops. My dog became ill and after the agreed deductible, she is covered. My Vet's office submits the expenses, Trupanion Canada acknowledges receipt to me by email and then follows up with decision breakdown in an easy to read summary. Payment is deposited in my bank account or sent to me by cheque. Thank you Trupanion. You are helping me give my dog the care she deserves!
