I've paid over a thousand dollars to Trupanion and they have never paid out anything to us in the 4 claims we've submitted. Only 1 of 4 claims were approved and it didn't meet the deductible. They don't cover preventative care or annual checkups. You can never lower your premium so if it starts high just get used to them never paying you. They don't cover pet prescriptions. And when we had our dog break a tooth, they denied the claim saying it was a "Pre Existing Condition." We had him covered under them within the first year of ownership. Pre existing was basically when he was in the womb. You're better off taking the insane prices they charge (higher than me an my wife pay for human health insurance combined) and just depositing it in a savings account. At least then you'll have that money when you need it instead of a claims denial because an injury resulting from a fall is "pre-exiting".

I've had Trupanion for over 20 years however, they have now changed for the worse. Their per condition deductible is a scam. My dog had gastronitis twice and although that was the diagnosis from the vet, they are charging me 2 separate 1k deductibles. I'm reporting them to BBB. They attempt everything possible to charge for a new condition. My other dog had cancer. He had surgery to remove lumps to see if the cancer had spread. They charged separate 1k deductibles for each lump that had a different make up. I took another dog in for breathing issues and they said it was wellness. My dogs are too old to change now but with my most recent addition. I went with Pet's Best. One deductible per year and no arguing about the condition.

I signed up my dog, gave all of her records up front and was charged the first premium of $145 right away. I then was issued the policy with a welcome package only to receive a scammy email after the first two payments - asking for additional information on medical. I personally work in insurance, we would never issue policies to then ask additional information to try to avoid paying any future claims. If they wanted to ask additional information it should have been done before the policy was issued.
The company’s customer service was dismissive and rude. She continued to try to gaslight me by saying they explicitly state during enrollment that they re ask questions about medical when that is 100 percent not true. The funny thing is my dog is perfectly healthy, but after realizing that they try to find additional info AFTER issuing the policy left such a bad taste in my mouth. I cancelled the policy and the most ridiculous part was they only refunded me partial payment for ONE month. After reading other reviews and seeing how they increase premiums based on age and don’t pay out quite often. I’ll take my business elsewhere. A really gross way to run a company by false advertising and hiding such important information in their fine print.

If I could give zero stars I certainly would! Paying for 2 years since I got my dog- premiums did go up. Had 3 incidences of claims with zero coverage for any emergency services. Called about coverage and what is covered as it was sold to me as 90% coverage although my online account had zero info or explanation of coverage. They told me every incident/illness/disease has a separate deductible and no exam fees are ever covered no medications will be covered unless it’s a chronic illness. So I inquired of the policy detailing what IS ACTUALLY covered and kept getting the answer nothing is covered nor it ever will be as every time your pet has an illness it’s a new incident and a new deductible has to be paid which does not align with the term “deductible.” They are using this term to elude paying the 90%.
My total costs have been about $1800 in emergency costs plus my premiums of $1600 over 2 years. I have requested reimbursement and contacted the ombudsmen but have not received any more resolution to the problem. I cancelled my policy as this is false advertising and very scam like company that lures you in with marketing 90% coverage providing NO documents on coverage (which I’m pretty sure is illegal) and denying every claim and sliding am inquiry.

If I could give zero stars, I would. This company is an absolute scam. They’ll happily take your monthly premiums but will find every excuse imaginable not to pay your claim when you actually need help. They twist policy language, delay responses, and keep asking for more “documentation” just to drag things out. After weeks of back and forth, they still refused to reimburse a single dollar. Do yourself a favor — don’t waste your time or money. They make it look easy to file claims, but once you do, they’ll make sure it goes nowhere. There are far better pet insurance options out there that actually care about your pet and honor their word. Avoid this company at all costs.

They buried the bit about not covering exams in one of those terms of service changes. So... surprise! And though they have absolute capability to reach my bank for purposes of getting our monthly premium, they couldn't, for some reason, connect when it came to pay out a measly couple hundred bucks on a 1500 emergency bill. So they're slow walking the payment via the US mail but we're ten days out and even that hasn't shown up. All this after 8 years of paying in. THEN, just after I had to argue with them about the claim payment, we get a notice that premiums are going up 11+% with a bunch of weasel words that explain how lt's "their job to figure out what costs are so they can keep premiums fair.. blah blah." But then again, even their stockholders aren't doing so well right now so go figure. Looks like death throes to me. We're outta there.

Absolute worst customer service and company ever. I have never left a review before but I can't with this company and want to warn everyone to never use them!!! Shop anywhere else or just put the $150 they're making you pay into a savings account for your dog/cat. You'll probably end up never using it and then just have a treat for yourself. Started paying for pet insurance for my dog as a puppy which started at $50. Today, they have upped it to $150 and I have never even used them.
I have given them over $8,500 in the years I have had them and they just up your monthly payment whenever they want and if you want to pay a lower one, they only offer one choice which is, they will make you pay a higher deductible to lower your monthly so it's not really helping at all. Please please please go anywhere else to get pet insurance or again, just put it into a savings so companies like this can't screw you over.

Keeping it simple, this company does whatever it can to get out of paying anything. They "linked" pet condition that various vets said had nothing to do with each other. We would have saved more money by just taking the monthly premiums and putting them in a bank account. This company is less than useless. What they do should be illegal.

They are a total scam. If you love your dog, run away from them. I'm still waiting for a claim and a refund, one month later. I had them because of Chewy, but when I sent my dogs' claims for the first time, they would disappear from the website, I emailed them, and they said they had nothing. I took print screens, and they said they would do it by email. After that, they said my first dog had an ear infection because he made a test to see if he had something, and because he had had it in the past, they would not cover it. But he didn't have any, they just didn't want to cover the diagnostic test. And this guy Ali would insist that my dog had an infection, this representative is the most lying, rude person, I do think the guy has even issues against clients or me.
I canceled the service with them, and after I canceled they charged me. I sent an email, and the guy said they didn't refund me yet because now there is an error in the system, and they put my cancellation date wrong. Hilarious. Now I'm still waiting for my refund and my claim... Worst customer support, worst experience ever.

I have been shocked to discover all the fines and claims that Trupanion has on their record. At least ten U.S. states have cited Trupanion and its subsidiary, #AmericanPetInsuranceCompany (APIC), for violations of local insurance and fraud laws. It all started when I requested information on why they are constantly increasing the monthly payment. Here’s the link with all the court documents: **.

IT'S A complete ripoff, we need to do a class action Lawsuit! I hate Trupanion. They are just getting free money, and they never payout anything. 5 years and every claim, I have made, they will say approved, but with they word it, to where, they are never paying anything. It's very frustrating. Save yourself the stress, it's not worth it. I'm a real person, and it's sickening how they have scammed me. I hate to cancel because I have paid so much in. I just wish I could get my money back, and just save, for emergencies. Please don't fall for it. You will regret it.

I have used Trupanion since 2009 for several animals (dog and cats). Initially they were great, but somewhere between 2009 and 2017 they changed their deductible rules. They used to have an annual deductible but then switched to a "per illness/episode" deductible. Due to this deductible change, this policy is useless for cats and anything less than an expensive (over $1000) emergency vet visit. The other day (8/12/2025) my cat had a dental procedure and since the vet wrote periodontal disease and tooth fracture they counted those as separate incidents and applied their "per-illness/episode" deductible policy. I understand that is their policy but it is terrible and there are other insurance providers out there that still have an annual deductible not a "per illness/episode" deductible. I canceled my policy immediately and switched to a different provider that offered the same coverage with only an annual deductible, AND it was cheaper.

If I could give zero stars I would. I had signed up for a policy because I had seen numerous advertisements saying that they provided immediate coverage. My cat had been puking blood, and I got the insurance so I could be reimbursed for some of the vet costs because I was laid off a few months ago and my money is currently tight. My claim was denied because of an apparent waiting period that I was never notified of. Trupanion never sent me a confirmation or welcome email, and I was never given my policy documentation until I tried to appeal the denied claim a week later.
Talking to their support felt like talking to a brick wall, they were wholly unsympathetic and just repeated a script about the waiting period that I had not been informed of. There was no attempt to support me as a pet parent, and no attempt to even try to come to a compromise about the issue. I have already cancelled this policy and will never consider this company again unless they have serious changes. TLDR: Trupanion falsely advertises their coverage's wait periods, doesn't communicate with pet owners, and is wholly unaccommodating. I would never recommend this insurance.

I have had my girl insured with Trupanion for almost 8 years. She has had a few minor claims. One of them being endometritis. My deductible amount is $400. Trupanion is different in regard to their deductibles. It is per condition not per year. So after the latest claim that was for $700 approximately $100 would have been attributed to her deductible for this condition and the deductible would have been satisfied.. Instead, Trupanion changed her condition to "discharge" instead of endometriosis. That way they could charge me the whole deductible again for $400. From my $700 invoice trupanion paid me $100. Trupanion used to be the gold standard and an ethical and upstanding company, but now They are not even a company I would recommend. Their website after they tout an upgrade does not work properly and their owner's portal does not work at all!

If I could give a 0 rating, I would. I’ve been paying nearly $130 each month for years for my dog’s insurance. I was promised that after a $1,000 deductible, I would have 90% of the bills covered for each disease. However, that turned out to be a huge lie. They fight you on every claim. My dog was diagnosed with skin cancer, and we needed to conduct tests to find out what it was. It turned out to be two different skin cancers. Trupanion categorized every test and result under different deductibles, making me pay multiple deductibles for the initial diagnosis. They even listed a lipoma as a medical condition while we were ruling out other lumps.
Having worked in the veterinary industry, I am ashamed that I recommended this insurance to clients. Companies like Petsmart, CAA, AON, and Fetch have never caused this much grief for their clients. Trupanion argues over claims and charges every deductible they can to avoid paying what they promised. I trusted the representatives who came to the Niagara Falls clinic and believed what they said. As an insurance agent myself, I would never recommend this insurance to anyone. No one deserves the stress of worrying about whether their insurance company will stand behind what they advertise. I didn’t read the contract word for word; I relied on what the agents and reps told me, as I wasn't an agent at that time, nor should I have to be. The vet also encouraged me to get this type of insurance.
Do not waste your money on Trupanion, it should be called FAKE-panion. It has been a nightmare dealing with constant denials of benefits while we are going through the worst time of our lives. I purchased this insurance to give us peace of mind and security, but it has been nothing like we expected. It was in place to cover the ridiculously high vet costs. The vets are stilling bringing in astronomical salaries - owners of the clinic, and yet the average person can’t afford to treat their beloved pets. This is why we buy insurance because we know we can’t afford medical care and we trust what we were told. Please choose any other company except Trupanion. They are not true to their word and they deceive people in the worst time of their life. They make the good insurance companies look bad. There are good ones, choose the others I mentioned as I know they pay out much easier and make life easy for clients.

Make sure to read the inclusions/exclusions that are not printed on the "pre" sign up information. Also, they only apply a certain amount to your deductible, and they decide on what they deem the cost should be. If you paid $133, they only think it should be $65, then they pay 90% off their cost

If I could have given a zero I would have. I have never done pet insurance in the past so I was willing but skeptical to try the 30day trial from Trupanion offered through my vet. My dog is 6months old and in perfect health. In my first visit with my vet, I mentioned to the vet tech I would like the vet to take a look at his skin and ensure there were no allergies or illnesses of any concern since he scratches more often than my previous pup did. My vet gave him the all clear with no issues or concerns whatsoever.
Upon his 2nd visit 2 weeks later for another round of vaccines the vet notice he had the start of an ear infection, giving him medication and ultimately submitting the claim to trupanion. I received an email notifying me the claim was denied due to "a preexisting condition". When I contacted trupanion they stated that the vet tech records stated my concern of itching and therefore my dog has allergies which is preexisting to the insurance. I informed them he has not been diagnosed with any kind of allergies and an inquiry to my vet shouldn't allow them to self diagnose my dog with an illness they feel he has.
I informed my vet regarding the issue and they created an addendum stating my dog had no allergies nor any signs of allergies and he is in perfect health. They then recommended I appeal the decision. I spoke with a new agent who stated they don't accept addendums. She also stated they don't diagnose diseases or illness. Seeing how my vet never diagnosed nor mentioned the possibility of allergies to me or in his notes, trupanion took it upon themselves to label him as having allergies to get out of paying anything that can "fall under the umbrella of allergies". This seems to do with anything that can cause a dog to have an itch. I am grateful this occurred during the 30 days trial, but am very discouraged from pet insurance as a whole.

So I canceled and every rep told me a different story. Refund will be there Monday. Two more weeks, it was sent on the 21st, it should be there. Another week, no money. Called bank, no pending transaction. Next rep told me by August 7 it should be there which is another 9 days. What the actual f. Do not use them. Scam scam scam.

From Canada. I have used Trupanion for my dog almost 15 years, and what a BIG MISTAKE!! This company is absolutely a money grab. If I had to do it again, I would save money monthly (with interest) to cover my dog health care. Their claim process and system is absolutely archaic. Your claims are being paid back based on the deductible you paid on a specific existing condition. Meaning if your deductible is 350$, you will need to pay this amount for each condition your pet has. And GOOD LUCK trying to submit your pet invoices for each condition… Their submission online system doesn’t provide a way to refer to previous invoices for each condition. So a clerk in their office (with absolutely NO knowledge of veterinary background nor pet’s health) gets your claim and try to link whatever you wrote as the condition for your pet and decide if this is a pre-condition or not!
My claims have been denied so many times, therefore they send you an appeal application that has to be fill out by your vet or you. Again a tactic to make the process very complicated… but mostly frustrating and very time consuming. So in conclusion, my opinion is DO NOT subscribe to Trupanion nor any other pet insurance, it’s basically a money grab. Just put money aside every month in case your pet needs it.

I wrote them an email saying that this is totally not fair and accurate and asked for a discount and their answer to me was worse than their email about the increase. They gave me information about how I can change with my deductibles to reduce the payment! I cancelled it right away. They did not even to keep me as a customer and afterwards they sent me another ridiculous mail this time about that I have 72 hours time to change my mind. Terrible company! I did not see anything like that.

We have since gotten a new policy from a different provider but the bottom line is that they had no business canceling a policy without proper notification. I only found out when I looked at my phone app and my two little dogs were listed under “previously enrolled pets”!
I had just paid my monthly premium and received no reimbursement for that month. Their sickening rate increases are only for profit. Our veterinary hospital has not increased any of their prices by more than a dollar or two and it’s a huge facility with many doctors on staff. This is why Trupanion is not even ranked anymore when you go to Pawlicy to get pet insurance quotes. A once excellent company is now nothing but a bunch of thieves that do not care about the health or well being of your animal companion! I want 100% reimbursement for my May payment in the amount of $139.00. They were going to increase my monthly premium to over $200 a month for two toy sized very young dogs.
Over the years I was a huge advocate for this company only to have friends and family tell me what a big mistake it was to listen to me and get their dogs a policy with this company! They are charging a fortune for insurance but denying claims as they did several times for a couple of my dogs. They also lie! If you sign your animal up for their insurance as soon as you bring them home, within 24 hours, they promise to waive the waiting period for insurance to kick in immediately! We did this with our puppy Ruby and still had to wait for the accident and illness policy to kick in. They also stopped sending out the charm with their logo and an identification number on it in case your dog were to get lost.
After being a loyal client for 17 years they showed zero loyalty to me and my dogs. No wonder why most vets pulled all Trupanion literature from their waiting area. Lastly do not fall for their direct pay to your veterinarian claim. That is very untrue. Very few regular veterinarians have their software to file on the spot. The only facilities that have the software are major hospitals. This company needs to be sued.
