I have had my girl insured with Trupanion for almost 8 years. She has had a few minor claims. One of them being endometritis. My deductible amount is $400. Trupanion is different in regard to their deductibles. It is per condition not per year. So after the latest claim that was for $700 approximately $100 would have been attributed to her deductible for this condition and the deductible would have been satisfied.. Instead, Trupanion changed her condition to "discharge" instead of endometriosis. That way they could charge me the whole deductible again for $400. From my $700 invoice trupanion paid me $100. Trupanion used to be the gold standard and an ethical and upstanding company, but now They are not even a company I would recommend. Their website after they tout an upgrade does not work properly and their owner's portal does not work at all!

If I could give a 0 rating, I would. I’ve been paying nearly $130 each month for years for my dog’s insurance. I was promised that after a $1,000 deductible, I would have 90% of the bills covered for each disease. However, that turned out to be a huge lie. They fight you on every claim. My dog was diagnosed with skin cancer, and we needed to conduct tests to find out what it was. It turned out to be two different skin cancers. Trupanion categorized every test and result under different deductibles, making me pay multiple deductibles for the initial diagnosis. They even listed a lipoma as a medical condition while we were ruling out other lumps.
Having worked in the veterinary industry, I am ashamed that I recommended this insurance to clients. Companies like Petsmart, CAA, AON, and Fetch have never caused this much grief for their clients. Trupanion argues over claims and charges every deductible they can to avoid paying what they promised. I trusted the representatives who came to the Niagara Falls clinic and believed what they said. As an insurance agent myself, I would never recommend this insurance to anyone. No one deserves the stress of worrying about whether their insurance company will stand behind what they advertise. I didn’t read the contract word for word; I relied on what the agents and reps told me, as I wasn't an agent at that time, nor should I have to be. The vet also encouraged me to get this type of insurance.
Do not waste your money on Trupanion, it should be called FAKE-panion. It has been a nightmare dealing with constant denials of benefits while we are going through the worst time of our lives. I purchased this insurance to give us peace of mind and security, but it has been nothing like we expected. It was in place to cover the ridiculously high vet costs. The vets are stilling bringing in astronomical salaries - owners of the clinic, and yet the average person can’t afford to treat their beloved pets. This is why we buy insurance because we know we can’t afford medical care and we trust what we were told. Please choose any other company except Trupanion. They are not true to their word and they deceive people in the worst time of their life. They make the good insurance companies look bad. There are good ones, choose the others I mentioned as I know they pay out much easier and make life easy for clients.

Make sure to read the inclusions/exclusions that are not printed on the "pre" sign up information. Also, they only apply a certain amount to your deductible, and they decide on what they deem the cost should be. If you paid $133, they only think it should be $65, then they pay 90% off their cost

If I could have given a zero I would have. I have never done pet insurance in the past so I was willing but skeptical to try the 30day trial from Trupanion offered through my vet. My dog is 6months old and in perfect health. In my first visit with my vet, I mentioned to the vet tech I would like the vet to take a look at his skin and ensure there were no allergies or illnesses of any concern since he scratches more often than my previous pup did. My vet gave him the all clear with no issues or concerns whatsoever.
Upon his 2nd visit 2 weeks later for another round of vaccines the vet notice he had the start of an ear infection, giving him medication and ultimately submitting the claim to trupanion. I received an email notifying me the claim was denied due to "a preexisting condition". When I contacted trupanion they stated that the vet tech records stated my concern of itching and therefore my dog has allergies which is preexisting to the insurance. I informed them he has not been diagnosed with any kind of allergies and an inquiry to my vet shouldn't allow them to self diagnose my dog with an illness they feel he has.
I informed my vet regarding the issue and they created an addendum stating my dog had no allergies nor any signs of allergies and he is in perfect health. They then recommended I appeal the decision. I spoke with a new agent who stated they don't accept addendums. She also stated they don't diagnose diseases or illness. Seeing how my vet never diagnosed nor mentioned the possibility of allergies to me or in his notes, trupanion took it upon themselves to label him as having allergies to get out of paying anything that can "fall under the umbrella of allergies". This seems to do with anything that can cause a dog to have an itch. I am grateful this occurred during the 30 days trial, but am very discouraged from pet insurance as a whole.

Absolutely awful. Every rep tells you something else. My sister advised me not to use them because they don't pay what they claim and they deny many and almost all claims and if they do it takes 5 years to see any money. So I canceled and every rep told me a different story. Refund will be there Monday. Two more weeks, it was sent on the 21st, it should be there. Another week, no money. Called bank, no pending transaction. Next rep told me by August 7 it should be there which is another 9 days. What the actual f. Do not use them. Scam scam scam.

From Canada. I have used Trupanion for my dog almost 15 years, and what a BIG MISTAKE!! This company is absolutely a money grab. If I had to do it again, I would save money monthly (with interest) to cover my dog health care. Their claim process and system is absolutely archaic. Your claims are being paid back based on the deductible you paid on a specific existing condition. Meaning if your deductible is 350$, you will need to pay this amount for each condition your pet has. And GOOD LUCK trying to submit your pet invoices for each condition… Their submission online system doesn’t provide a way to refer to previous invoices for each condition. So a clerk in their office (with absolutely NO knowledge of veterinary background nor pet’s health) gets your claim and try to link whatever you wrote as the condition for your pet and decide if this is a pre-condition or not!
My claims have been denied so many times, therefore they send you an appeal application that has to be fill out by your vet or you. Again a tactic to make the process very complicated… but mostly frustrating and very time consuming. So in conclusion, my opinion is DO NOT subscribe to Trupanion nor any other pet insurance, it’s basically a money grab. Just put money aside every month in case your pet needs it.

I bought Trupanion insurance for my 3 pets 11 months ago and today I received an email of 17% increase which they say fair and accurate. 17% in one year! I wrote them an email saying that this is totally not fair and accurate and asked for a discount and their answer to me was worse than their email about the increase. They gave me information about how I can change with my deductibles to reduce the payment! I cancelled it right away. They did not even to keep me as a customer and afterwards they sent me another ridiculous mail this time about that I have 72 hours time to change my mind. Terrible company! I did not see anything like that.

We have since gotten a new policy from a different provider but the bottom line is that they had no business canceling a policy without proper notification. I only found out when I looked at my phone app and my two little dogs were listed under “previously enrolled pets”!
I had just paid my monthly premium and received no reimbursement for that month. Their sickening rate increases are only for profit. Our veterinary hospital has not increased any of their prices by more than a dollar or two and it’s a huge facility with many doctors on staff. This is why Trupanion is not even ranked anymore when you go to Pawlicy to get pet insurance quotes. A once excellent company is now nothing but a bunch of thieves that do not care about the health or well being of your animal companion! I want 100% reimbursement for my May payment in the amount of $139.00. They were going to increase my monthly premium to over $200 a month for two toy sized very young dogs.
Over the years I was a huge advocate for this company only to have friends and family tell me what a big mistake it was to listen to me and get their dogs a policy with this company! They are charging a fortune for insurance but denying claims as they did several times for a couple of my dogs. They also lie! If you sign your animal up for their insurance as soon as you bring them home, within 24 hours, they promise to waive the waiting period for insurance to kick in immediately! We did this with our puppy Ruby and still had to wait for the accident and illness policy to kick in. They also stopped sending out the charm with their logo and an identification number on it in case your dog were to get lost.
After being a loyal client for 17 years they showed zero loyalty to me and my dogs. No wonder why most vets pulled all Trupanion literature from their waiting area. Lastly do not fall for their direct pay to your veterinarian claim. That is very untrue. Very few regular veterinarians have their software to file on the spot. The only facilities that have the software are major hospitals. This company needs to be sued.

They raise your rates massively, deny every claim, make everything as difficult as possible hoping you'll give up (if you have a life or job you won't have the time or money to fight them and they know it), and they hope you'll just cancel after paying premiums of thousands for years, and then your pet will get old and die in agony because you won't be able to provide the care your pet needs, when they actually get older and need it, after you've paid in the pet's entire young life. They do not care about animals or us humans who love them. These people belong in jail or Luigi'd. This company is criminal. Look at Yelp or BBB or anywhere else. If I could write a zero review I would. My 14 year old dog has been with Trupanion since she was 10 weeks old in 2011. We rarely had any claims until she reached about 12 years old. After paying our premiums for over 14 years, Trupanion is now taking almost 4 weeks to review a claim for a condition that has been covered for over 2 years. Our premium was also increased as our claims increased and when we appealed Trupanion’s decision to apply a deductible when it had already been paid for the same illness that occurred randomly over a multi-year timeframe…that happens when your dog reaches 14 years old. Unless your pet is unfortunate to have a chronic, catastrophic ailment, this may not be the insurance model or provider for you. Any breaks between the occurrence of the same ailment (of more than a few years), will be assessed as a new condition, and your deductible will restart.

My 14 month old Standard Poodle has been insured since a 12 week old healthy pup. There have been no claims until a few days ago when she inexplicably became very ill and spend 2 days in Emerg being diagnosed and treated. The bill was in excess of $1200. After Trupanion had cherrypicked their way through the treatment, we paid over $1000 and our "full coverage" insurance paid $200! What a scam! Do not waste your money on these snakes. And they said even the claim got approved, half of the claim aren’t covered. You still gotta pay it yourself. It will end up paying 50-60% yourself (inspection fee, teeth cleaning fee, pre surgery inspection fee, deductible fee, 10% of claim). Every claim we've submitted has been denied for one reason or another. Most recently, we filed one for our dog's allergies, which have been causing recurring ear infections. At first, it was approved and applied to our deductible. But a few weeks later, they reversed the decision and told us it wouldn’t be covered—because it's now considered a pre-existing condition.
Apparently, the dog’s previous owner once took him to the vet for itching (a totally different issue, long before we adopted him), and that alone was enough for them to deny the claim. So now for the rest of his life, they won't cover anything allergy related. We’re super disappointed and seriously considering canceling the policy and switching to another company. Either way, we’re stuck now—because his allergies are officially marked as pre-existing. And just to top it off, they raised our premium by $20/month at the start of the year.

Classic insurance company. Will deny coverages for existing conditions but charge you like you're getting covered for absolutely everything. I think my premiums just about doubled in 6 years with no claims. My personal experience would have cost me over 7000 dollars for the term of my policy to be rejected on my first and only claim to cover to euthanize my pet versus putting him through a 3rd back surgery which wouldn't have been covered by them either. Apparently if the reasoning for being euthanized has anything to do with a prior condition they won't cover it... it's not about the couple of dollars I didn't get reimbursed but more about the slimy reasoning that they use to justify this denial all while keeping their hands out for your ever-increasing monthly payment. Be very careful about spending the extra money for their "Recovery and Complementary Care Rider." In their “Recovery and Complementary Care Rider” part C, Hydrotherapy, Trupanion states the following: “Hydrotherapy involves the use of water to aid in the healing and/or conditional of a patient. Pets either swim in a pool or tank prescribed periods of time, or, walk on an underwater treadmill. Hydrotherapy is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, orthopedic conditions, neurological conditions and muscle, ligament and other soft tissue injuries. The therapy must be recommended by Your Veterinarian and it must be provided by or under the Direct Supervision of Your Veterinarian.”
My dog’s licensed Veterinarian recommended hydrotherapy for my dog, Dolly. I submitted her letter of recommendation and her medical plan which also recommended warm water swimming to help with Dolly’s degenerative disc disease and arthritis. The facility I go to, Fido Physio, provides regular updates to the Supervising Veterinarian and the therapy is provided by a person who is a member in good standing of the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork/Association of Canine Water Therapy, and, a Certificate of Canine Aquatic Therapy.
When they denied my claim I filed an appeal with all of the above information and noted that I didn’t know of any Veterinarian Clinics that had warm water pools which Dolly’s doctor felt would be better for Dolly’s condition than a treadmill. When Trupanion denied the claim again they said that the therapy must be provided by “staff under direct veterinarian supervision. (No Veterinarian has the time to watch your dog swim, or, for that matter walk on an underwater treadmill) Alternatively, Physical Rehabilitation services may also be provided by a Certified Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT, CCRA, CCRP, CCRVN, VMRT, Diplomate Canine Rehab from Canadian Physiotherapy Association) if referred by a veterinarian. Because the requirement for a Certified Rehabilitation Therapist is not included in the Policy Rider, I believe the rider is made in Bad Faith.

I agree with the others distrust and disgust in Trupanion. We picked up our 6 month old female doodle and went to the vet that same day for a checkup. The breeder we got her from supposedly works with trupanion and was covered for 30 days. We called and set her up with an insurance policy that same day, if not the day after. Her initial diagnostics at the vet visit caught that she had hookworm. I submitted invoices to Trupanion and they told me that wasn't covered due to it being "preventative". The breeder was notified and ghosted us when we mentioned the issues.
Trupanion told me I needed to go after the drug companies themselves. In addition, my dog was seen for a UTI twice, and was put on a prescription diet. Those invoices were submitted and were partially applied towards individual deductibles based on condition. We have paid a total of $944.72 to trupanion, in addition to all the other costs that we have incurred with our pet. Trupanion has paid us $0.

But when I submitted my claim, I was suddenly informed that nothing could be covered because I would have to pay 250 CAD out of pocket. Where is this stated in writing? I have never even received my contract documents. When I asked about it in the chat, I was told that the contract was sent as an attachment with the first email—but there was no attachment in that email. When I pointed this out, the response was simply, "It doesn’t matter, we can send it to you now." This is highly unprofessional and misleading.
The deductible of 250 CAD per condition makes the monthly premium essentially pointless—especially for a puppy. Taxes are not covered, nor are routine check-ups or vaccinations, despite the high monthly rates. This is extremely disappointing, and I can’t help but feel deceived by these practices. New pet owners are already anxious and adjusting, and this kind of dishonesty only adds to the stress. When we called Trupanion, we spoke with Amanda from Sales, who assured us that this issue would be covered under the policy if we renewed. Trusting her word, we renewed the policy.
However, after our vet submitted a pre-approval for the extraction procedure, Trupanion denied the claim, stating it was a pre-existing condition. This was never raised as an issue during renewal. When we called back to contest the decision, they continued to make excuses, eventually claiming the issue was reported within 30 days of renewal and therefore ineligible.
Why are we paying such high premiums for a company that denies valid claims using vague and shifting excuses? They misled us into renewing the policy with assurances of coverage, only to leave us with no support when we needed it most. This is especially infuriating as it concerns a young, 14-week-old puppy just starting to teethe—something no one could predict. What they refuse to cover is very extensive. They will go over any and all vet records dating back to when you first got the dog. If your dog so much had a runny nose then they don’t support respiratory issues. If your dog ever sprained her leg, then they don’t cover arthritis or torn or ruptured ligaments. If your dog has ever acted as if she’s in pain then they don’t cover hip dysplasia or arthritis. If your dog ever had a cough, then they won’t cover respiratory issues. And I mean ever if your dog is 10 years old, they will count stuff from when your dog was six months old. What they do cover is practically nothing once they’re done reviewing all your Vet records.

Pet parents run from Trupanion. When your dear pet gets sick and you start submitting claims, they continually process claims without reaching out to the veterinarian medical provider for medical information, therefore processing each claim submitted as a new (PER) condition claim, therefore making a bottomless deductible. The continuous response is you can go through the appeal process.
This practice hopes that the consumer doesn’t go through the appeal process so that Trupanion does not have to pay on an insurance claim. I personally have experienced this over and over and over again, submitting claims for a condition that is not new and should not be processed as a PER condition deductible. This is not an insurance company you want to go with because when your pet get sick, you will not be reimbursed because they will apply it to their per condition bottomless deductible and then tell you to appeal it. Not once did they ever reach out to the veterinarian to obtain medical records and process the claim correctly. Run from Trupanion.

They will kill you with kindness to get you signed up, but then you get the sharks once it’s time to see the vet and submit a claim. Pretty much assume you will be denied. I’d assume they are good if you never need to submit a claim for cats, but if you do they won’t pay.
Plus, the customer service is terrible. When I went to cancel and express my concerns, the cancellation agent said “you are unproductive and need to spend more time reading the entire contract.” I was taken aback because I just found out my pet had a medical issue and the insurance denied the claim so I was naturally upset. Tristan, the agent, is a horrible person. I asked if they could refund my premiums for the past 4 months since they refuse to cover anything. He told me they are regulated by the American Pet Insurance Company (APIC) and APIC says they can not provide refunds. So I called APIC and asked if this is true and they said “we have never heard of this.” Tristan is an interesting choice for customer service. Overall, maybe good for dogs (I can’t speak on this), but don’t buy for cats. There are better options I’m sure. But probably better off just paying out of pocket.
