I had just adopted a 1 yr old cat. I signed up for Trupanion. I was on the plan for 15 days when she started limping and not using her paw. I took her in, and they said it looked like some kind of chemical burn or something. They took out a little piece of sticky gooey substance that was stuck in her inner paw between her toes. They put it down as inflamed pododermatitis. The vet said that whatever it was caused it to inflame. It was not a pre existing condition. The vet called them to explain this, and all they said to me was from their notes, the vet agreed with them. I had just spoken with the vet earlier and they did not say that. On top of that, it took them 2 months to get papers from the vet only… Ridiculous. They keep saying it's within the waiting period…. 30 days.. But it was not an illness or pre existing, so the waiting period is 5 days… I had 15 days in.

I have paid then over $159 a month for 7 years. I added a rider last year for my 13 year old golden for acupuncture. I felt he may be in pain but not sure. I did not use the rider for 6 months. Started acupuncture and out in claims and they rejected them saying it was pre existing since he was on a prescribed anti-inflammatory. These people are horrible. I switched my other two Goldens over to Lemonade which has been amazing!! Stay away from Trupanion.

I’m aware of the 30 day waiting period but the pre existing condition is bull. Even that 30 day period is unacceptable. They say they care about pets, they don’t. They care about money and profit. Why would I pay the monthly premium and activation fee if my dog isn’t even covered for 30 days for illnesses? Why would a trip to emergency not be covered? It’s hogwash. Stay far away - not worth the monthly premium for regular trips to vet and even some emergencies! Highly suggest opening up a savings account for your pet and putting money in there monthly rather than in pockets of these shameless insurance companies.

This is probably going to be the most honest review on Trupanion that you can find. First off I just want to say that the customer service alone is not the best and every time I called with a problem to get more information on and for their help, to sum it up I would always be told NO. They never tried to do anything to better my experience and or help in any way they can to ensure I wouldn't stop giving them my business. The reason being for that is because Trupanion is actually a small company hence why they are strict and they don't always tell you everything when you are first signing up, very shady business. My mistake was during the waiting period, which is 30 days and very stupid, I fed my dogs too many treats and she got sick. Well Trupanion consider that a pre-existing condition because it happened during the waiting period and won't be covered if she ever got constipated by something else.
I admit my mistake but my dog is doing fine now and it doesn't affect her living and she doesn't need to take medication for it so how are you going to tell me this is a condition when this only happened because of treats. I had fought with them trying to tell them that is so unfair because it is not a pre-existing condition and that my dog has a clean bill of health and they knew that when I first signed up. With very valid information of my dog being healthy and even my vet connecting with Trupanion because she didn't agree with their service of considering this a pre-existing condition, they did not care to try to help me and their final answer was NO sorry. So strike number 1.
Strike number 2 is they don't cover for the simplest things that can added up which is vaccines, deworming, taxes, appointment fees, or any other fees. That alone can cost up to $100 each time you go to the vet when you have a brand new puppy, so why am I paying for Trupanion thinking they would help me out when I'm paying for the vet bill every time just because they don't cover vaccines or fees etc. I'm just throwing money out the window. What I really don't agree with is a statement on their website about what they don't cover which is that they don't cover any sickness that could have been prevented by a vaccine and or dewormer.
So in my head I think ok well some people are unable to afford all those vaccines and deworming because like I said they can add up, so wouldn't Trupanion want to cover that so it can prevent the dog getting sick, or ensure a healthy dog and help out by covering for all those things like even the taxes and fees, vaccines deworming, well NO they don't. So really what is the point of having Trupanion. They do cover a lot when your dog is in a accident and or your dog is really sick even though you had the vaccines done and all that stuff, but that is the only time they cover for you. Otherwise you are stuck paying everything else and if you don't have the extra benefits well you are just screwed. Not to mention they barely cover anything dental related, honestly the list goes on about what they don't cover and they don't tell you about, once again very shady business.
Strike number 3 is that you are unable to change your plan/policy and you are stuck with what you get when you first sign up. If you get a puppy how are you suppose to know if you would need extra benefits in the future, I guess better to be safe than sorry, but even if you were paying for the extra stuff and you came to realize that you are pretty responsible and your dog is very healthy so it's not worth paying extra and want to take out those extra benefits, well you can't. You are stuck with it for the duration you have your dog. Or if you realize, "Hey maybe I want this extra stuff because my dog has been going through a lot" well nope. Sorry. Can't add it into your plan. That is one of the things they don't fully explain to you when they first sign up.
I try to add the extra benefits and if I had to cancel my plan and re-signed up and wait the 30 days again just so I can have the extra coverage, then ok I'll do it but the representative kept telling me she doesn't advise me doing that and I had asked her, "Ok. What do you advise me to do," and she didn't have an answer for me which takes me back to when I say they don't try to do anything to help you to ensure your business with them, they can honestly care less. I switched to Petsecure and many people switch from Trupanion to Petsecure because of the poor business.
Petsecure is Canadian proud and the leading pet insurance in Canada where Trupanion is American but offer business in Canada. Petsecure covers everything that Trupanion doesn't cover and more. If you get the Secure 4 plan, which is pricey but you know what it is worth it because it covers fees, taxes, vaccines, and deworming then you will be walking out of the vet office paying close to $0 each time because they cover way more and you can change your plan anytime you like hassle free. Petsecure covers pre-existing conditions as well but I advise to get more information on that by calling them. Do yourself a favor and get Petsecure.

Trupanion has been very disappointing! I cancelled my policy with them about 6 years ago when they refused to pay out a claim after having changed my deductible for 1 month and then switched back to its original lower deductible. I SHOULD HAVE STAYED AWAY FROM THEM! I decided to try them again at my vet's recommendation because of their new direct pay options and 100% increase in the premiums of my pet's other insurance carrier at the time.
First, I was mislead to believe that the deductible was annual not per condition; and Second, I recently submitted a claim to be applied towards my pet's high deductible for medication wipes for a vaginal yeast infection that was caused by recent antibiotics and surgical gown for 3 weeks, not a chronic skin condition that they proclaim. Additionally they are basing their denial on a "possible ear infection" noted in my dog's vet records in the past 18 months, noting that somehow a POSSIBLE ear infection is related to a vaginal yeast infection! Come on! I do NOT recommend this company even if they have direct pay. I don't trust that they would even pay out directly to the vets!

Their business practices are unethical and it’s disgusting - as with all pet insurance companies: “Excluding pre-existing conditions is standard in the pet insurance industry”. This used to be the standard for human health insurance as well, but it’s unethical and now illegal. Just because the pet insurance industry doesn’t have the same regulation, it doesn’t mean it’s okay to do this. It’s sad that companies like theirs have to be forced to do the right thing instead of just doing good. They're hurting animals and ultimately hurting people who want to care for their pets. No matter what condition my dog had, they found a way to make it pre-existing. She always had vomiting and they said because it existed before she had the policy, and anything arising from vomiting (which is a lot of conditions) is excluded.

They're refusing to cover a recent claim because it's "pre-existing." Our cat had coccidia as a kitten (which caused malodorous feces, the symptom Trupanion won't cover which isn't even a symptom now) and doesn't have coccidia anymore which is easily proven. Since she was treated for coccidia, she not only doesn't have coccidia anymore, she also doesn't have the malodourous feces either.
She started vomiting and not eating much most recently (a completely new & different thing not connected at all to the "pre-existing SYMPTOM" which she doesn't have anymore because she doesn't have coccidia anymore which was the CAUSE of the malodourous feces!) and Trupanion is saying it's all the same thing - all digestive (with their high school educations, of course). They simply won't cover her because it's "digestive" (the rep's actual words). Don't get Trupanion. They're a very dishonest company & group of people.

Scam. Horrendous coverage. Everything you ever submit gets declined if you ever once have taken your dog for a general symptom like they seemed lethargic before getting the policy. My dog has been to the vet three times for which I tried to submit a claim and they were all declined despite there being different reasons for the lethargy (one time was accompanied with vomiting, one time was a urinary tract infection, and one time was a slipped disc). All three diagnoses had lethargy as an accompanying symptom and so all three were declined coverage. I've wasted thousands of dollars with these crooks. They also take 1-2 months to file a claim and get a response.

As most have said this company raised their rates 33+% for no reason other than profits. They make absurd associations to try VERY hard to find a reason to get something categorized as "Pre Existing" and they usually do. Yes. It's entirely on HOW the Vet writes up your visit. Always only have 1 thing on your appointment, don't mingle things together, like hey we are going to the vet so let's have them check for this as well. That's a recipe for disaster trying to get a claim paid through these criminal LOSERS. I hope they go out of business and the CEO as rich as he or she might be suffers somehow in the future, they don't helps people in society. Trupanion is a company whose real product is false compassion. They are little more than a bureaucratic machine, one who couldn't care less for the role a pet plays in a family dynamic, and they leverage false tones and engineered kindness under the illusion of care. When attempting to file a claim, secure a pre-approval, or generate support for a pet's condition, policy holders are met with fake manufactured support, only to find any attempts at financial reimbursement and/or payments are met with the actions of a typical insurance company; at any and all costs, find a way to deny the claim.
In my case, failure to secure recent months veterinary history, due to COVID preventing visit, provided these financial mercenaries a reason to deny a claim which could have save my young dog's life. Instead, I am now forced to choose between essentially bankrupting myself or letting my beloved pet die of cancer years before he should. That is who Trupanion is - a company who will ultimately force you to choose between your financial stability or the life of a loved one, all the while collecting your premiums en route to supporting their ability to hire more claim reps well versed in false compassion. You shouldn't only avoid this company, you should actively support their investigation and ultimate demise. They are, in a single word, criminals.

They don't pay for anything. Always an excuse of how this or that isn't covered. My dog had an ear infection. I submitted a claim but they rejected it saying they don't pay for examination fees. Apparently the only part they'd cover is the ear drops. Of course that's less than the deductible. You pay $77/mth for years. Occasionally your dog needs to go to the vet. And Trupanion finds some reason why they shouldn't reimburse it. This is a scam.

Absolutely horrible. My puppy got sick, was throwing up and lethargic so I took her to a clinic. They did a bunch of tests to determine her stomach was inflamed and gave her an iv and prescription food. They said it could be from the post spay meds or ingesting something by accident. The cost of the visit was over $900 and they covered zero. What’s the point of pet insurance if they will not help when she’s sick and needs to go to the animal hospital? Oh and it took over two months for them to look at the claim. Absolutely horrible. I do not recommend wasting your money as they are stingy and will fight to not cover. I had already spent about $150 on the couple months I had the insurance.

I should have read the reviews but trusted a vet who recommended them because they were paid directly by Trupanion. Thirty day waiting period is mandatory while they take your money so you pay for a month, in addition to an administrative fee, for nothing. The two claims I filed were denied because of pre exiting conditions that were nonexistent. My guess is that this is their default for denials.

I paid Trupanion $80 a month for years thinking that my dog would be covered if something major happened. Submitted my first claim ($190 bill for pink eye) and they weaseled out of it saying it was a preexisting condition because years ago my dog had a physical injury to his eye. These are two separate and totally unrelated conditions but they are all about taking your money and will do anything to get out of paying out on a claim. A completely worthless waste of money. Sorry that I dumped thousands of dollars into this scam, wish I would have put it into a pet savings account instead!

I have been with Trupanion for 6 years and every single year there has been a premium increase. Usually it's by a couple dollars or ten dollars per month, so I didn't give it much thought. However, this year, they gave me a call and told me my premiums will be going up by 35% to $100 per month. My dog is healthy and never had to make a single claim. A hike this high is insane--and such a hard blow especially during Covid-19 times. So after the call with the agent, I decided to call customer service and cancel my policy. When I spoke to them, the second agent told me that my premiums were actually staying the same. I'm like, "excuse me? Your other agent just called me to tell me that it was going up to $100. Why would she call me to tell me that if it wasn't the case?"
She kept denying it and repeatedly told me that my premiums are staying the same for the upcoming year. She even offered to send me an email as written confirmation that my premiums were not going up. Emails are not contracts. Even if I did have an email, it wouldn't hold up in court. At this point, the whole situation just didn't feel right. So I asked that agent to call the other agent who initially called me to clarify the situation. After speaking with the first agent, the second agent then gets back to me and says the rates are indeed INCREASING by 35% and apologizes for the misinformation.
Her excuse was: "I didn't have access the information that the other agent had". Basically admitting to me that she lied to my face. What an unethical, sleazy tactic. I have ZERO trust and respect for this company. I have fortunately CANCELLED my policy today. It's the best decision I've ever made for my pet. I'm just going to put away $60 every month in a high interest savings account as a rainy day fund for my dog. This way, it'll also save me another future phone call with them to make a claim. Apparently, from other reviews, it's difficult to get any kind of payout with them even when you do have a legitimate claim.

I have a negative experience with Trupanion. Keep in my that their insurance is condition based and they use vet techs to determine if your claim is eligible. They also take well over a month to review your case. I had three claims that were still under review for over a month. I had two cases in particular where I decided that I no longer wanted insurance with them.
In the first case, my dog suffered skin fold and chin infections. Trupanion did not reimburse me because they it was related to his allergies (a preexisting condition that they do not cover). They cited some records from a vet that made absolutely no sense on their response. The only way to consider an appeal is if your vet speaks with them.
The second case was an episode of vomiting. My dog vomits a couple times a year and it is not always clear as to whether he swallowed something or if it is some sort of gastroenteritis. Trupanion only reimburses for a condition and if the condition for the vomiting is unclear it may not get reimbursed and in my case it did not. They say that their claim submission process is easy but it is not. This particular claim was under review for several weeks because they needed a claim form. They did not tell me that I needed to complete this form and so it stayed pending info.
Last case: My dog had a benign mass removed and I asked for reimbursement for the surgery and I has my vet's office fax the records. Trupanion would not consider reimbursement until they saw the pathology report even though they said my records were complete without. How does seeing a pathology report have anything to do with reimbursing for surgery when they have the operative note from the vet. It was cheaper for me pay for my vet expenses out of pocket for my two dogs than to pay approximately $180 a month for this nonsense.

Please do not use Trupanion. We brought home a new pup and were sad to learn healthy paws no longer offered coverage in our state - so we turned to Trupanion. Our first claim for kennel cough was denied bc within the 30-day waiting window. Got it. Fair is fair. Post waiting-window our pup was having some severe pain at night every time she shifted she'd yelp for ten seconds or so. We brought her into the ER bc she was clearly in pain. Turned out to be growing pains and sore muscles thankfully. She just made a big drama about it.
Trupanion denied the claim bc when we brought her in for kennel cough (within the 30-day window) she showed signs of pain - well yeah, she had a 105 fever and kennel cough. She was achy. They unethically attached this fever pain as being pre-existing (post 30-day window) and tied it to the growing pain later experienced. Imagine if it were dysplasia nor something more serious - no coverage for all the ensuing treatment. Stay away from Trupanion - they will twist words to floss you If they can. With healthy paws I felt comfortable every time I submitted an invoice. Now I stress.

I am shocked at the way I have been treated by members of Trupanion. My experience with them was the worst I have ever experienced. I was denied on every occasion, for coverage for my dog - whom is under two years old, all because he vomited as a puppy (he ate a sock). They would not treat any issue if vomiting was involved - they even stated that "if he was hit by a car and vomited, they would not cover any medical treatment because he vomited."
If the vet does not word the visit a specific way, even if it is a new incident or injury, you are denied. They denied every single claim and the managers I spoke to denied me from requesting further assistance and speaking with someone above them. I am so disappointed with their service. Don't be tricked - Trupanion treats pre-existing symptoms the SAME as pre-existing conditions. We came to Trupanion because many of our friends who are pet owners recommended them, little did we know that we would quickly come to regret this as the worst mistake of our pet-owning lives. Where do I even start?
-the worst customer service
-slowest processing time
-a cast of incompetent individuals that don't understand basic animal biology or have common sense
There is so much I need to say, but in the interest of time, I will use one example to illustrate all the points above. I enrolled my dog in Trupanion about half a year ago, prior to that he was very healthy, had no diseases, illnesses, major accidents or anything of the sort. We were very fortunate and thought that we shouldn't keep pushing our luck and should get insurance just in case. About a month or so ago my dog went with us to an off leash trail, where the fencing was broken unbeknownst to us, so he managed to escape to a nearby water treatment area and got himself completely soaked in the dirty water. A few days go by and he starts to show signs of a bacterial or parasitic infection on his skin, so we take him into the vet to go get it checked out. After some tests, the vet determined that he picked up two different strains of bacteria from the dirty water.
The vet gave us 2 options: to either use a topical antibacterial spray that we already had at home, or to start a more comprehensive but expensive treatment using antibiotics. We chose the former in the interest of saving money and because we didn't want to go straight to oral antibiotics because our dog already has a sensitive stomach. After a week or so of this treatment, we brought our dog back to the vet because the treatment was unsuccessful, as previously hypothesized by the vet (hence why they gave us 2 options). So we went with the second option after the first one didn't work. Thankfully this cleared up his infection but we were left with a pretty hefty bill. No worries though right? Trupanion will cover it!
It's not a pre-existing condition and we've already paid our deductible in full. But lo and behold, Trupanion has the audacity to tell us that this infection was a pre-existing condition. And you want to know why? Because previously my dog had some chafing from a very tight harness which caused some bruising and scabs on his skin, and Trupanion had the absolute gall to say that that makes it the same thing as the bacterial infection that my dog got from the dirty water, simply because they were both skin issues.
To make this whole experience even better, we had to submit an appeal the first time they rejected our claim, which we did and we also attached a detailed explanation by our attending vet explaining why their reasoning was pathetically wrong. But I guess in the end you can't teach those who were never in it to provide health insurance for your pets in the first place, and only in it to make money off of your pet's suffering. Just as a side note, from beginning to end, this whole process took over a month and a half because Trupanion really doesn't care about their customers or animal welfare, they're greedy, untrustworthy, and a truly truly reprehensible company.

I purchased pet insurance in 2013 when my dog was a puppy. Every year, without fail, my rates have increased. After a few years of this, I called to find out why the continuous increases...I was told it had to do with the increase in veterinary cost in my area. I bought that excuse for a few years but now it's been eight years and my monthly premium has more than doubled. I believe this is not fair practice. Trupanion just increased my rates 38%. We've not submitted any claims to date. Our dog's health status has not changed (still very healthy). They claim that rate increases are NOT due to the fact that the pet's age increases. They claim that increases are due to trends in medical claim expenses based on (1) geographic area; (2) type of pet: breed/mixed breed, size and gender. So, for example, if there is a large increase in expenses for mid-sized female dogs in the Bay area (where I live), and if my dog fits that description, then my rates increase. BUT...(1) this is during COVID... Don't tell me that expenses have increased 38% during COVID; (2) don't tell me that there has been some massive increase in claims/expenses among mixed breed, mid-sized female dogs in my area. Certainly not a 38% increase!
Their own 10-Q states that there are very high increases in the revenues and only nominal increases in total claim expenses. I read elsewhere of similar complaints about huge premium rate increases by Trupanion. The only "true" thing about Trupanion is that it is a true bait and switch. Stay away from Trupanion. First, the math only works out in your favor if there is a long-term catastrophic disease state (e.g., cancer). Second, this is PURE BAIT AND SWITCH. SOOOO unethical. Disgusting. My experience with Trupanion has-been mostly positive. With my plan, Trupanion covers 90% of the cost for most vet visits-- but they do not cover testing fees or exam fees, which can be very expensive when trying to diagnose and properly treat your pet. My monthly premium is ~$18, which I feel is a fair price for 90% coverage on most expenses. The claims process is a piece of cake, too, which takes the headache out of filing a claim. You're done in a matter of seconds.

I pay nearly $30-month and the one time I called about an issue, I received the “that’s not covered” spiel. It seems far overpriced for limited services. I have a breed with potential health issues so I spend quite a bit on special food and keep him fit and vaccinated. I don’t feel secure with this company since I am a very dedicated owner with experience showing dogs, yet there seems to be fine print in the contract.

I tried to tell Trupanion I would get X ray done of dog’s mouth to confirm no dental disease and take a picture of dog's mouth. They refused and said because it was noted by vet 2 teeth had very mild tartar there will be no coverage.
This company is a sham and what they are doing is illegal. That’s why they have been fined multiple times. Even had to pay hundreds of thousands in penalties. They sales reps sound nice and caring on the phone, but they are just truly well trained sales people that don’t care about your dog. Stay far away! They wouldn’t even give me my money back when I spent more in health care for my dogs than myself monthly and never used the insurance because they hadn’t told me up front what was covered and what wasn’t. It took them 4 months to send me the documents of coverage summaries for my pets and They just have a come back saying that insurance is preventative and it’s good I don’t need the insurance. I submitted claims for my puppy who had never been clinically diagnosed by a vet for allergies. The first claim was for diarrhea and chewing her feet. They approved the diarrhea but declared the chewing her feet allergies as a pre existing condition. She was only 6 months old. So how they figured that I don't know. They based it on a phone call I made to the vet asking if my puppy could take my previous dog's meds because I THOUGHT she MIGHT have what my other dog had. No clinical determination was made at all. My puppy still licks/chews her feet 2 months later. Meds did no good. Vet doesn't know what is causing the issue. My Vet called the ins. Co. They pretty much told her anything gastrointestinal would be considered allergy and disallowed and they overturned the diarrhea and decided it was due to allergies too. My vet still has not determined my puppy has allergies.

I was happy with Trupanion until it got unaffordable. I had a very sick dog and they had to pay a lot out for him. Now, I have two dogs and I can’t afford their premiums as they go up so much every year. I had to get my deductible raised to $1000 so I could afford a $49 a month premium. Well, about three months after I raised the deductible The premiums were increased to $63 a month.! That is a 22 % increase! It was about the same increase for my other dog. So I have two dogs on this insurance, I’m paying $112 a month and each dog has $1000 deductible. Once these two dogs are gone I Will be done with Trupanion. What a rip off! I will probably just save some money to put aside before I get another dog.

Don't bother getting pet insurance. I was with Trupanion for 7 years and only was able to use the insurance once. Every year monthly costs went up, we started at 30$ a month and were at 75$ a month by the time we canceled. We were basically being penalized for being good dog owners and having a healthy dog. Over the 7 years, we were with Trupanion, we have paid at least 5000$ for insurance that we were never able to use because our vet costs are quite low in our area and fees never met the deductible ($250 - 500$ deductible over the years). The only time we could use Trupanion the bill was only 400$. So we basically flushed 4500$ down the drain. It is much smarter to put away the 50$ every month in a savings account and have it grow to cover any unexpected vets costs, than to put money into insurance you may never use. Learn from our mistakes and make better financial decisions.

We love our pets and want the best for them. Part of having a pet is caring for their medical and dental needs. I thought that getting a pet insurance would save me money but insuring with Trupanion proved to be a very costly mistake. My cat was diagnosed with Glaucoma. The vet told Trupanion on two separate occasions that my cat's Glaucoma is not a pre-existing condition. They've sent me email updates regarding my claim. On their e-mails, they kept on calling the claim, a claim for Conjunctivitis. I've told them repeatedly to stop calling this claim a claim for Conjunctivitis. Call it by it's correct name: A claim for Glaucoma. Conjunctivitis is an infection. Glaucoma is a buildup of pressure on the eye. If left untreated, it leads to blindness. These people don't listen. They kept on calling it a claim for Conjunctivitis. Still, I kept reminding them that the claim is for Glaucoma. Conjunctivitis and Glaucoma are 2 very different things.
Conjunctivitis - inflammation of the thin mucous membrane (conjunctiva) that lines the inner surface of a cat's eyelids and coats the outer surface of the eyeball (source: Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine). Glaucoma - an eye condition caused by an abnormally high amount of pressure that builds up in the eye. (Source: Pet Health Network) I told them that a broken nail is not the same as a broken arm. Trupanion declined the claim. I find their decision shocking because I felt it was unjustified and unethical. I've cancelled my insurance with them.
My advice to those looking at Trupanion for pet insurance: Run away. Don't get reeled in by Trupanion's 30 day free trial promotion, and that you will receive a 90% reimbursement. You won't get it. Instead of paying a high deductible and a high monthly premium, open a bank account specifically to pay for your pet's medical and dental care then deposit money regularly in it. For instance, instead of paying $60 a month to Trupanion, put that in the bank account. You will be better off for it.

Expensive policy even with $500 deductible. This insurance company does not pay for any office visit even if it is an emergency. And will not pay for the subsequent office visits after the emergency. Essentially it will pay nothing. If there is a pre-existing condition such as a teeth cleaning, it will not pay for any surgery involving the pet's teeth. Save your money!

I don't even know where to start. To sum it up if you bring your pet to the vet within the 30 day wait period, or prior to signing up, they manage to associate anything that happens thereafter with those visits. If your pet even so much as farts they will not cover anything gastrointestinal. If you prove it was not related they will ask you provide a diagnosis... which there is no guarantee they will pay for all that testing. They basically make up the rules as they go along in order to prevent paying a claim. Want to file an appeal? GOOD LUCK! Everything you call a different will tell you what guidelines you need to follow... when you call back what you did was unnecessary and they will give you another set of guidelines to follow. My vet contacted them asking what other information they may need in order to process my claim and they never responded. I submitting my claims about 9-10 months in and all 3 were denied.

The price is high. They do not cover pre-existing illness, even if there was a hint of it before the policy started. I've had dogs for over 50 years and for the most part they are healthy and need only occasional vet care. If something pricey happens to them the pet insurance will not cover anything because of it being pre-existing. If you decide to get the insurance before a condition starts, you will pay a lot of money. Chances are your dog will remain healthy and you will spend a great amount of money. Money that could have been saved for the possibility of a future vet bill. I believe that a pet owner would come out ahead financially by not having pet insurance. The winner in this is the insurance company not the pet owner.

Trupanion is one of the suggested pet insurance companies to use after you adopt an animal through the SPCA - and I want everyone to know how TRULY HORRIBLE and useless they are. We have had their insurance for the last 2 years and they have yet to cover a single visit, they say everything - and I do mean EVERYTHING - is related to a "preexisting condition." I recently brought my dog in for a severe ear infection and found out they denied the claim because it's related to his allergies. I'm sorry... what?
When I called the insurance company they said, "Well allergies can be one of the many causes of an ear infection and it wasn't specified what caused it so we assume it is related to his allergy." They ASSUME it was related to his allergy so they don't bother to cover it or contact the vet to clarify. It doesn't matter what happens to your pet, they will find a way to relate it to something "preexisting" or something that doesn't fall under your coverage umbrella and they will screw you over. Do yourself a favor and stay far far away from these scam artists. They are useless and should be ashamed of how they conduct business.

Trupanion also supported her eye care and medications for many years. Over the course of her life, we submitted well over 100 claims, and never—not a single time—did we have any trouble with the claims process, have to fight for a claim, or file an appeal. The claims process is extremely simple and takes less than 2 minutes to complete, and the money is in our account within just a few days.
While the premiums for Trupanion are more expensive than some other pet insurance products, the coverage is far more comprehensive. Trupanion paid out well over $150,000 in claims over the course of our little Molly’s life- and we never had to fight for a single claim. Not once. Trupanion covered every single treatment, test, and medication her doctors recommended, without any fight on our part.
Not only does Trupanion have a superior product, with excellent coverage, and a quick and easy claims process, but the customer service at Trupanion far exceeds that I’ve experienced with any other company in any industry. Without Trupanion, we would not have been able to provide such a long, healthy, and happy life for our sweet girl. We are so truly and forever grateful to be with Trupanion!

Trupanion pet insurance Is a death sentence for your pets. In August 2019 I was given a nine month old Puppies. I was told by the people that gave the dog to me that the dog had all of his shots. I had found out that I didn’t have any shots whatsoever. In September 2019 I brought the puppy to my vets And had a full work up done on her and all of her shots. I have been going to my vet for over 20 years and she’s wonderful. When I was leaving I got a wellness package. Inside this wellness package How to form for an insurance. Call Trupanion when I got home. I called to find out more about this insurance. The representative for Trupanion had said There is no wait time for the new puppy I had received so if she got sick she would be covered.
The same day I had taken her to the vet I call Trupanion. While I was talking to the representative she had asked if I had other dogs or cats. I said I have two more dogs. She said, "You can also put these two dogs on but there they’ll be a 30 day waiting period so they wouldn’t be covered during that 30 days. After that they would be covered." I had her cover them to because I had lost two dogs to Cancer And I had asked them if they cover Cancer and the lady from Trupanion said they cover everything except for pre-existing conditions and their vaccinations. On December 12, 2019 I brought my other two dogs in to see my vet To get their updates for their vaccinations. While I was in the vet's office I asked Matt to look at one of my dog's eyes. He had a little lump under his eye and I want to have a checked. I thought it might’ve been a tick bite. She wound up doing a biopsy on it and having it sent out.
When I went to go pay my bill I let the girls know at the front desk that I had Trupanion insurance to cover the biopsy. The girls at the front desk call Trupanion to let them know that this procedure was done and what the cost would be. They Were having problems getting through to them so when I got home I called them to let them know that the dog had to have this procedure done and to send the payment to the vet since the vet is a VCA Hospital, Set a lady at Trupanion said there would be no problem. Then I got a phone call from Trupanion on the 18th telling me they’re not gonna cover it because it’s a pre-existing condition. I told the lady it wasn’t then she told me it had to go into arbitration to prove that it wasn’t a pre-existing condition. They wanted my vet records for my pets which they received. He wanted letters from the vet stating it was a pre-existing which my vet provided.
I’ve been going back-and-forth with Trupanion to have the tumor removed from underneath of the dog's eye. This is a very expensive procedure and then the tumor Has to be sent out to the pathologist to see what type of cancer it is. I have been going back-and-forth with them. I’ve spoken with the supervisor Mr. ** with many of the representatives To get the case reopened. I have told them that it was not a pre-existing condition. My vet had “sent letters anything and everything she could do. Today is March 6, 2020. I was so aggravated. I told the girl I wanted to speak to a supervisor. She put a supervisor on. He called himself Mr. **. He said he would do all he could do that have the case reopened. He asked me what kind of tumor it was. I told him I didn’t know it needs to be surgically removed and sent out. I told him I’ve already lost two dogs to Cancer and he said that he would try to get the case reopened.
He also wanted to know how much it would cost and when I was going to have the procedure done I told him that it needed to be approved immediately and I told him how much it was gonna cost. My vet had sent him a letter via email And when I talk to him I had told him that he would be receiving an email from the vet. He told me he was going to get the case reopened and that he won’t be back until the following Monday and then I would know by then and I told him I couldn’t wait for that. He said that he would call me back which he never did. 20 minutes later I get an email stating that the vet from Trupanion had denied the procedure.
I got on the phone again and Said to the girl that I wanted to speak to a manager. I told her the ** knew this and he left for the day and he didn’t even bother calling. He didn’t do anything to help me out and then I told her that with her company they bring their pets to work with them and if anything were to go Wrong with one of their animals whether it be a pre-existing condition or whatever they have no problem getting the treatment that they needed for their animals but since I’m A customer that has insurance on their animals. Your company being an insurance company will find any way you can to deny a procedure to be done. I told her my animals are like my children. I have insurance on me. They have insurance on them and I expect for the insurance company to Help me with the medical bill. That’s what I’m paying them for. It’s now 11:25 PM at night and I still haven’t heard anything from the manager.
Before I got on this forum I had read the reviews on this insurance company and I was blown away on how many people have gone through and are going through what I’m going through. This is why if I don’t get any satisfaction tonight I’m gonna start filing a class-action suit against Trupanion. I’ve already talk to my lawyer and Told, "If Trupanion insurance does not do anything for you we will see you then." When I spoke with ** the supervisor from Trupanion he had said that this company has been around for over 15 years.
For anybody thinking about getting trupanion get on the reviews and read them and don’t think twice about getting this insurance. Like I said you’re real happy to take your premiums from you but they don’t want to help you out whatsoever. They don’t wanna help your animals and that’s what they’re there for. With every review that I read they were all denials where they would not pay for the procedure to be done on the animals. If you have an animal can you just noticed that something is wrong with it people hate to tell you but they’re going to call it a pre-existing condition even though you’ve never even had your dog to a vet. We’re not doctors. We have to bring our dogs to a doctor like we have to go to the doctor to be diagnosed. These people should get it through your damn head that if we have an animal that’s sick or need surgery that’s why we bring them to doctors. They just don’t want to help us. I can’t even give them a star.

A few months after getting my lab, I noticed him limping, after an X-ray and physical exam (which I was well aware the insurance wouldn’t cover the exam fee as I had read the fine print) it was determined that he had a partial tear in his cranial crucial ligament. He now goes for rehab (laser treatments, acupuncture, and hydrotherapy) 2-3 times per month and has been on Chinese herbal medicine and I’ve not once ever had an issue with payment or approval.
I submit my invoice after leaving the vet, and I have the money deposited back into my account within 3 days. I wish I had read the reviews on this site before signing up with this awful company. I cancelled all 3 policies today now that my new insurance has started. I adopted 2 kittens and a puppy about a year ago. Got them all their shots and initial clean bill of health from the organizations I adopted them from. About 7 months in, I took them to a recommended vet. I told them up front that I had Trupanion insurance which they were clearly promoting through the office. They proudly told me they had the auto system to upload claims making it super easy. Turns out that my girl kitten had gingivitis. The vet prescribed antibiotics and told me to come back in w weeks. Upon return, it wasn't gone. He ran feline aids and leukemia tests - which fortunately came back negative - and unfortunately cost me more $. The vet recommended he pull several teeth which I was okay with both to help my kitten and because I had the insurance coverage.
Long story short, Trunpanion rejected the claim as it was a "preexisting condition" though I only found out about it at the fist vet appt. I would have had to take her in much earlier to have it covered. And how was I to know this? Oh, it's in the tiny tiny premium doc they emailed me. I told them that the rep who sold me the policy provided amazing detail however neglected to discuss dental. They further told me that I could have called for pre-authorization (yeah, right).
You would have thought the vet would know this given their Trupanion relationship. The vet's office response was that all the Trupanion policies aredifferent - a BIG LIE per Trupanion. I happily cancelled my policies with this horrible company today. They sure made it difficult compared to selling me the policies. Glad to be done with them. NEVER NEVER BUY INSURANCE FROM THIS COMPANY! And my kitten, she's fine now that she had all her teeth pulled from juvenile gingivitis. No longer have to worry about it as a pre-existing condition. :-(

We had a terrible experience with Trupanion on our claims related to our 8 weeks old puppy. Thankfully they showed their true colors during the breeder certificate period, otherwise, I would only have been donating premiums close to $80/month, going forward. We obtained our puppy from a breeder and came home with a breeder certificate for 1 month. On the 4th day morning, our puppy had diarrhea and we rushed him to a vet. We visited the vet for 3 days. As our puppy started recovering, we filed claims with Trupanion. They rejected the claims citing "pre-existing conditions". We were shocked but realized that the vet had provided wrong documentations, with wrong dates. I will never forgive the vet for doing this and dealing with them separately. The vet later wrote an amendment and submitted to Trupanion. I also dropped a note to Trupanion's CEO asking if his organization would do the morally right thing or ignore everything.
What followed is a very traumatic and stressful experience for our family. Trupanion assigned a "vet" to investigate through the process. While he claimed to follow an unbiased process, the whole process was biased. Throughout the process, Trupanion tried coming from various angles to decline the claims including flip flopping positions from "pre-existing" to telling us in the end that our certificate from breeder that we registered is completely invalid. They will argue forever and wear you out.
While the claim was for $1000 and not a life changing amount for our family, it is the whole experience of how you are treated dealing with unethical folks. In the end, the appeals rejected the claims but wanted to offer us further insurance including being immediately eligible for accident cover. Frankly, I cannot bear working with unethical businesses and have immediately rejected the offer. I do not want to go through another mental stress every dealing with this organization. If my puppy has any issues, I would rather spend from my pocket vs take help of such types of organizations.
As I read reviews on this forum, I think we have dodged a bullet long term because if I had continued with Trupanion, I would only have been making donations to a bad business. I also see consistent negative reviews over last several months. The type of behavior they exhibited for a mere $1000 claim, makes me wonder if everything is right for this company - whether they are seriously cash crunched or on verge of bankruptcy. Only time will tell... I could have possibly gone to our AG office or filed a small claims court claim but they way they behaved, I realized they do not wish to pay and in such situations, it is better they keep the money. Bad Karma will bite you at some point of time!

I bought insurance for my puppy the day after I went to the vet for the first time. She had an ear infection when I got her from the breeder, and that was her only "pre-existing condition" (note this is a completely curable condition and extremely common). I started at a rate of $60 per month. In my first year, all of my claims were approved (severe diarrhea). More than 18 months after getting the policy, I made another claim for another ear infection. This claim was initially denied. The explanation I received was that this was a pre-existing condition. The more detailed explanation I got from talking on the phone and via email is that even though the initial condition had been cured long ago, they felt this was symptomatic of "allergies," and that any other future claims that might relate to allergies would also be rejected. So, they're making a correlational assumption about an underlying condition my pet has, even though that diagnosis is not coming from the vet.
In fairness, I appealed the claim, and it was overturned (although note it was only removed from my deductible, and was not something they actually paid for). I wasn't excited about the prospect about fighting future similar dubious rejections, and I was troubled the logic that pre-existing conditions could be extended to "related conditions" even if the pet was not diagnosed with those related conditions.
Ultimately, the reason I decided to cancel my policy was because my rates increased to $78 after my first year, a more than 30% increase. When speaking with customer service over the phone and via email, they attributed this to an increase in the cost of treatment in my region. I find this hard to believe. My primary motivation for picking Trupanion was that they advertise that they don't increase rates based on the age of your pet. Now, I'm skeptical this is true, based on reading reviews on this site and others.
Given the risk of seemingly arbitrary rate increases over the life of my pet, the value proposition simply isn't there. Best case scenario, I pay $10K over the life of my pet, but I'm guessing based on the rate increases it will be closer to $20K, if she lives a long life. It's hard to imagine my veterinary bills exceeding that amount. I'll take my chances and invest in saving my money instead.

The vet gave my dog a clean bill of health then pushed Trupanion on me to get the kickback paid to them. The next month my dog went in for three months of allergy testing before they determined it was treatable cancer. I didn't expect them to pay for the cancer treatment but I did expect them to pay for the diagnostic testing of the allergies along with the allergy medication, after my $500 deductible. He's got dry eyes from allergies, they wouldn't even pay the $3 for saline solution but they gladly took my $150 every month.

The only reason I kept coverage is because of how amazing my vet is. Getting anything paid for is one of the worst. First the deductible is per condition. So if your furry family member has multiple different conditions they will never pay a single penny. You might as well not have any coverage. Don't pay them to just have everything come out of your pocket anyway. The people act like they actually care, they don't. If you don't want to renew they cancel coverage you have already paid for. It is crazy they won't cover office visits. No doctor ANYWHERE will try to diagnosis and treat without exam. Duh!
This company makes being a responsible loving poet owner impossible. Because this company only cares about getting money, I have no option but to let my beloved boy that is a mixed pit bull rescued from a dog fighting ring and endured horrible abuse and neglect, suffer with pain because they refused to cover his treatments after I met my deductible or euthanize him. As much as it I'd ripping me apart, I am going to euthanize him. I can't afford his treatments and I can't let him reach the point he is truly suffering and has no quality of life. Thanks so much for nothing Trupanion.

Paid faithfully for a policy for our dog for ten years. Never had a claim. This year, she had a few procedures that added up to almost $1,000. I submitted a claim under the understanding that there was a $500.00 deductible to satisfy. The claim came back as 'approved' but provided zero benefit. When I called to inquire as to why they wouldn't payout, they disclosed that the deductible is applied PER AFFLICTION. So your pet has to have vet bills in excess of $500 per illness before they will payout. Nowhere in the quoting process was this ever disclosed and, in fact, to this day, if you work up a new policy quote on their site, they do not explain the terms of their deductible policy. They've opted to bury the language in their policy statement which I would venture to guess is read in about 1 out of 100 cases.

If you go with Trupanion to protect your pet, you are virtually making an expensive donation to Trupanion. I was with Nationwide for 16 years with my (I miss every day) last dog. They weren't bad, but didn't cover everything. And the premiums were reasonable. Trupanion will bait and switch you. You will get around a $58 a month promise, and then two months later will rise to $78 a month and every few months will go up another ten dollars a month. And this is just for a puppy and not an old dog! I have already spent more on premiums on my two year dog than on my 16 year dog combined! And Trupanion doesn't cover very much. They told me they now only carry chronic issues which is good if your dog has a serious chronic ailment. I'm afraid to cancel now, because my luck the dog will get something chronic. And she's too old now to get a decent premium.

Like many retrievers, my dog appears to be predisposed to nasal infections associated with swimming. My vet treated the first infection with antibiotics and symptoms disappeared, so one could assume it was cured. Soon after I got Trupanion coverage. Many months later my dog went swimming again and got another nasal infection that required sedation and irrigation to treat. Trupanion decided this infection was pre-existing and denied the claim. My dog is predisposed to nasal infections... some dogs are, but it appears Trupanion will never cover a condition that is predisposed. Apparently, because "once a nasal infection, always a nasal infection." What's the point of having insurance? After my deductible, I think it would have cost them something like $40. I called immediately and the girl on the phone said they needed more records. She could not tell me what was not missing and then asked when my dog was fixed. I spoke to another person and they said again that they had all the information they needed.

My experience: Trupanion denied my dog's claim for dental surgery due to a single note of "mild calculus" prior to coverage. But there is no mention in the policy of "calculus," including no mention of it in the exclusion clause. Trupanion relies on an exclusion clause that includes a list of conditions - none of which appear in my dog's records (except "gingivitis" which is specifically ruled out in the records.) Even IF calculus were a condition justifying exclusion, there is no evidence that the extracted tooth had calculus (or any other condition listed in the exclusion clause.) I asked Trupanion - twice - whether there is any factual basis to support a claim that my dog's extracted tooth had calculus, or any of the conditions listed in the exclusion. Trupanion ignored this inquiry both times. It is painfully clear to me that Trupanion goes to extreme lengths to deny coverage.

The phone service rep did not complete this request and continued to charge me at the higher rate. I called again requesting this change again and was told I would be reimbursed back to the original change request date. Then my dog was injured and I filed a claim, looking online at the premium charges at the higher rate. I was issued a claim check by Trupanion, on which they did a stop payment, causing a bank fee to me even when I paid the higher premium. I called to inquire and was told that my claim was not reimbursable and that I would be reimbursed for the premium over payment, which I have still not received. Similar to many insurance companies Trupanion will use any excuse, whether valid or not to deny a claim. One dog had a surgical procedure, part of which involved the examination of a tumor. They did not cover part of the surgery because they do not cover examinations. The vet launched an appeal but they remained firm. Had the record used the word investigation it would have been covered. My recent denial was because I noticed a new dog holding her urine. I took her to a specialist who did complete lab work and said everything was fine. A month later she has an UTI and this is dismissed as a pre-existing condition. Again the vet called to explain that there was no evidence of a previous UTI, and again they maintain their previous verdict of ineligible. Shameful.

We took out Trupanion a few years ago to help provide coverage for unexpected big expenses which we have now had to endure. Their coverage is very disappointing. It is no wonder that people do not keep their pets when they get sick. Trupanion does not cover the tax you pay on your expense. You need to take them to see a specialist which you think won’t be an issue. Well - don’t expect them to cover your examination or consultation fee which can be expensive. Why? When I asked, they don't cover it because (according to them) that fee covers the cost of operating the clinic - for the techs, building costs, hydro etc. We have been paying a consulting fee to consult with and be seen by a specialist!
Our senior dog started having heart issues, so we took her to a specialist - over $1200 bill. We had higher deductible because we wanted to keep monthly insurance cost down because of dogs age. Deductible $1000 so I thought we would get $200 back - nope. Take off tax, take off the 185 for cost to be seen by specialist, then when they had it whittled down, they pay only 90%. What we paid didn’t even cover the deductible. The cardiologist recommended further testing to see if there were underlying conditions that could be affecting her heart. One of tests recommended was ultrasound. They found liver values were out - and did ultrasound - not covered. Have to pay another $1000 deductible.

I had an absolutely awful experience with this company. Just like most bad reviews of insurance companies, yes, this did center around a claim that was not paid out. I will not go over the exact details. But to summarize, my veterinarian took the time to write a full page letter stating that there was no way to test or diagnose my dog's ailment until he was 1 year or older. Therefore, there was no way to consider this a pre existing condition. There is a lot larger story to this. And while my goal at the time was just just meet my deductible for the year in case anything else happened, it came clear to me that any potential future submitted claims with this company would be a fight to get compensation.
I decided to cancel my plan, and look elsewhere for coverage. When I called to cancel my plan (there is no way to cancel plan through the website), I was put on hold and transferred to a "specialist." I told her that I wanted to cancel my plan and had one question (it was in regards to timing of when plan coverage would end when I cancelled), Instead of cancelling the plan, the lady pulled up my file and started arguing with my claim and what my veterinarian stated. She even had the audacity to say her vet told her something completely opposite. She went on to say that we wouldn't be covered on anything like this with another insurer (which is silly to say because of course we will not be. Since the ailment has already happened, it is "pre-existing" and I know that those conditions are not covered, for obvious reasons).
I let the lady go on, doing my best to not let my frustration get to me. When she said that she wanted to make sure "she" (referring to my dog) got the best coverage (my Dog's name is Roscoe and is a male), I corrected her, confirmed my coverage was cancelled and hung up the phone. If this is the way this company does business, NOBODY should give them theirs. I am more than happy to provide any more details on my terrible experience with Trupanion, whether that be sharing the email correspondence we've had, my vet's letter, etc. I just want people to know that they should look elsewhere to protect their furry loved ones.

They want to market to him all the reasons why we should keep the insurance. I asked for this in an email three months ago. Sound good on paper, but I am now finding out that this insurance is useless and it is the worst insurance out there. In Sept 2019, my dog had a surgery to remove a lump on his paw, neck, and stomach area that cost $811. I also filed a claim for his eye and skin allergy bills worth $450. I thought I had met the $1000 deductible right? But NO! They categorized the lumps into two different lumps meaning my deductible was $2K and another $1K deductible for the eye/skin allergy. So for a $1261 claim, I had a $3k deductible in total. I was disappointed to say the least.
To make matters worst, a week ago I received an email that they are increasing my monthly fee from $31 to $38. I asked why and I was told that it was based off their data report. BS! They told me that once I changed the deductible I would have to go through the 30 days wait period again, which I was not informed when I changed the deductible over the phone. But I accepted their reasoning to respect their company policy even though the agent on the phone did not properly inform me of this.
Then I also asked about another claim that I submitted twice online, received confirmation twice in my email, however, did not appear on the account whatsoever. Her reply was only "oh, do it again then." There were no proper customer service skills demonstrated in this agent as well as a few other Trupanion agents I had spoken to in the past. Most of the Trupanion agents have an indifferent attitude toward customers. I truly believe that those employees have not had appropriate trainings suitable for their position.
I proceeded to ask her if she could help me cancel my plan because after paying $77.55 every month for 6 months, receiving rejections on claims and bad customer service. I lost confidence in this insurance company. The person on the phone told me that she cannot cancel my plan, someone else would have to call me to discuss the details with me and do the cancellation manually. She said they will call me in 2 days. I said, "No problem, I will go through the process with your agent regarding the cancellation. Thanks." 2 days later, no calls. Two weeks, no calls. It was not until I logged in to my account and saw that my plan was canceled. What happened to an agent calling me to establish an agreement to cancel my plan? There was no communication between me and the agent who canceled my plan at all.
Now I have a $600 vet bill in my hand and a canceled insurance plan. I tried to call and all they said was "there is nothing we can do about it." $465.30 of monthly premium was paid to this company in hopes of a peace of mind. All I received was poor customer service and a lack of communication. My experience with this insurance company was utterly unpleasant and disappointed. Trupanion miscommunicated (or perhaps downright lied) about preexisting condition exclusions, so now that I am leaving them. I have much fewer options for my older pets, and I have paid plenty of premiums to them and never gotten a dime in coverage. (Which I understand is sometimes how insurance works if you don't need it, but we did and they failed, miserably.)
Feb 2018: I move to Canada from the US. My prior pet insurance company doesn't exist here. But Trupanion does! I sign up. My pets have no huge issues, though one has had a tooth extracted for periodontal disease. Aug. 2018: That same pet needs more extractions. I call Trupanion, trying to budget for whether/when to do it at the vet. They tell me he's actually fine, his teeth are not excluded! Pleasantly surprised, I go ahead with the procedure.
A month or so later: LOL no. Claim denied in full. Reason? Pre-existing periodontal disease. I call Trupanion and express significant displeasure. They explain, in excruciating condescending detail, how pre-existing condition exclusions work. I tell them I know this but I asked them beforehand so I could budget and they told me we were fine. I ask something about the wording of the vet record that has the prior condition on it, and they ask if I've engaged in medical fraud. (I haven't, I've told them all prior vets, I'm just sick of their jargon.) Sooo that's fun.
I calm down and decide to stay with them. I understand why the exclusion was applied, it just wasn't communication well, and like I guess they have to be on guard against fraud or whatever. A year later, my cat who never had periodontal disease previously prior shows signs of it and needs extractions. I go ahead with them, confident that he, at least, is covered. HIS CLAIM IS DENIED. REASON? HE HAD TARTAR ON HIS TEETH ONCE PREVIOUSLY. TARTAR. T. A. R. T. A. R.
I sign up with a local Ontario pet insurance association as soon as I can and cancel Trupanion. I inform them as to why several days beforehand and get no response (I basically tell them to hold the legalese, I understand they have the legal right to do what they did but they are terrible at what they do and I will be canceling... I guess if they can't come back at you with legalese they don't see a point in responding). Anyway, buy at your own risk. Good thing I can have tartar on my teeth and still get dental coverage. I normally don’t write bad reviews ever, however, my bad experience with Trupanion must be shared to help future buyers. When we first got our puppy we were moving to a rural area known for fleas and ticks, so we went to the vet to start preventative care of a flea and tick medication. When we signed up for Trupanion they deemed that vet visit as a result of allergies and proceeded to deny every claim thereafter due to allergies being a pre-existing condition.
Here are the specifics: Our puppy had heat rash – denied due to allergies. Then he got pink eye from the neighbor’s dog - denied due to allergies. Then he got pink eye again from the same neighbor dog – denied again due to allergies. Then he had a puncture wound – that too was denied due to allergies. And then when I said I wanted to cancel and move to another company they threatened me that they will share their findings of allergies with the other company and it will always remain a pre-existing condition. When my dog has NO allergies to anything, ever. We feed him every kind of human food (except for the ones all dogs are not allowed like gapes, garlic, onions, etc) and all dog treats. He has never shown signs of allergies once, and the vet agrees he has never had allergies either.
I bought the insurance for peace of mind. I am thankful for this experience because now I have confidently canceled all insurance for our dog. I’ll be putting my monthly money into a savings plan to use for future vet bills. Possibly without this experience, I wouldn’t be so confident when future vet bills come up. I hope this honest bad review of how Trupanion is a scam will help future animal owners.
Future buyer suggestion - If you do buy insurance be sure to do it before you ever take them to the vet and don’t share any information on issues that arrived before the policy is out of the waiting period. That seems to be the only approach for them to not irrationally denying every claim. Good luck and I wish you the best with your little one.

When I signed up for Trupanion I was impressed by their marketing (90% of all expenses after a modest deductible, nice). Even though the monthly premium of $55 was a bit steep I figured you get what you pay for and decided to try it.
Unfortunately after a recent tooth cleaning (and extraction) I received a claim response of "denied" -- the reason listed was due to a pre-existing condition of gingivitis. I would have forgiven this conclusion if it were just the extraction part that was non-covered but in fact the entire bill including common cleaning was denied which I have to declare is nonsense.
In short, this company seemed to be all too happy to take my claim money for several months and then deny any coverage as soon as I tried to use it. After I chatted with one of their online support folks to request cancellation they sent me a "but wait" form letter stating "Sorry you're cancelling due to our claim response but please might you consider using us for emergency coverage." No thanks -- too late. If anyone has had more positive experiences with other pet insurance companies I'd be very interested in hearing about them if you're willing to share. Good luck! Drew

His TTA Surgery was successful and he healed well. It was then we were told to get insurance because there was a risk (I believe 40% chance) of his other leg requiring surgery because of the first ACL tear. Less than a year later after the initial tear he was exhibiting a slight limp on the same leg, we took him in and they did X-rays, they ran a scope and removed some more of ligament tear that was causing the limp.
Now that we had insurance, we submitted the claim. They refused the claim and said it was a “pre-existing condition” and that they would not cover it. So again we paid out of pocket. 17 months later, we noticed a slight limp again, but this time on his other leg. We took him in to see the surgeon, X-rays showed slight inflammation but nothing that required surgery at that time. Few weeks later the limp got worse. We called the insurance company and yet again we're told “pre-existing condition” and that they will not cover it.
So here is my perturbing question: why have this insurance? Why have insurance and pay the high premiums when we have to pay out of pocket every single time? When we first got insurance and told the company the reason for buying this insurance they should have told us at that time they wouldn’t cover ACL since it’s a “pre-existing condition”. They knew the history of our pup and never once mentioned there wouldn’t be any coverage.
We are now down 1000’s of dollars plus we were paying the monthly premiums all this time for absolutely nothing. We love our pup dearly, and we don’t mind paying, but its the integrity of the insurance company that gets to me. The insurance company should have told us this when we discussed the reason for the insurance. They should have at least given us options. For them to deny yet again on another leg is absolute greed and disgusting. I can’t say I’m surprised by it, but I’m indignant as a customer knowing that I am paying so much to ensure my pup and my family stay protected, because isn’t that the whole point of insurance? Peace of mind?
It’s absolutely disgusting how insurance companies work. I advise anyone considering insurance to please ask the questions that I never did. Since then we have cancelled our insurance, as we find it's better to save money separately for our pup than to go through this utter frustration as a family. #petownersbeaware #weloveourpup #asktherightquestions #americanbulldogs #champ #doginsurance #trupanion

We chose Trupanion coverage on the advice of our vet when our poodle, Max, was only three months old. He only had a couple of issues during his 13 years, and Trupanion paid appropriately. They have just refused, however, our final claim. And so I took the time to analyse their rates. In the 13 years between 2006 and 2019, inflation in Canada totalled 24.6% -- TRUPANION'S RATE WENT UP 475%. ONCE HE WAS INSURED, HOWEVER, WE WERE STUCK. This was a personable Vancouver-based company when we signed up. Now it acts like corporate America.

We got the insurance for 2 pets 6 years ago...one being 7 and the other about 8 weeks at the time. The younger one was very sick for 2 years and needed really expensive food. That allowance runs out after 2 months. He eventually got well and has needed little care since. The older one developed Cushing's...for which twice annual testing and monthly medication was very expensive. We got our premiums back big time on her. Trupanion even sent a sympathy card to us when she died 3 weeks ago. They pay promptly and are very easy to work with. But no exams and no routine care are covered. Premiums for my old girl were at $96/mo which I did not think unreasonable for a 13 year old. It's like all insurance. You are paying the premium in case you need it. One ACL repair on our girl was $2100, we paid $100 deductible for new diagnosis, then they covered 90%.

Insurance companies are difficult to deal with in any scenario but Trupanion is one of the worst of the worst and this is coming from an almost 6 year long loyal customer. My first experience with them was when my dog tore an ACL and had to have TPLO surgery. Trupanion was great through the start of the process. Approved all claims leading up to the surgery even pre-approved the almost $4000 surgery. That's when it all started to go bad.
Surgery went great. We paid. The vet assured we would get reimbursed by Trupanion. 30 days go by and receive notification our claim was denied with no other reasoning other than they said it was a pre-existing condition (yes, after it was already pre-approved!!!). This started a very long battle with Trupanion, the vet (which was great), and ourselves going through the appeal process. After many iterations and the vet going way above and beyond on our behalf we were successful in the appeal. Much to Trupanion's dismay. They tried everything they could to continue to deny but ulimately had no grounds continue non-payment.
Fast forward 5 years later and the dog has had a very healthy life so no new claims. He ended up with a foot infection from something he had stepped on and cut his paw. After all the treatment and medicine we were out almost $1000. No problem though. We have insurance and Trupanion has our back right?, Wrong!!! Submitted the claim and waited the 30 days for them to make a determination and to my surprise CLAIM DENIED!!!! The reason, ha you'll love this, this claim was also denied because once upon a time the vet noted he had redness in his ears (not an infection, just redness).
The redness in the ears was in July 2014, infection in the paw August 2019. Called and spoke with Karin and she said, "It must be related to allergies so you can go through the appeal process again if you want to try to overturn it." WHA WHHAAAT!!! My dog possibly had an ear infection over 5 years ago so now all skin related issues can not be covered, WHAT THE? They never contacted the vet or myself for clarification. Just seems it is policy to deny all claims then put the extraordinary burden of appeal on the customer to try to get reimbursement. Sound like a good company to you? I am no longer a customer of Trupanion and would recommend all others to be very careful before putting your trust in them like I did. If you do be ready for a fight with every claim.

I got Trupanion coverage for my puppy who developed bordetella. The emergency check-up and treatment were not reimbursed by Trupanion despite my having complete coverage. They cited odds "outs" in the policy such as a check-up not being covered: an emergency check-up not getting covered by policy makes no sense. Despite my providing all the paperwork and answering their questions, my claim (check-up and diagnostics, medicine) was fully denied. I have cancelled the policy as it is a false sense of security. If pneumonia is not an unforeseen condition, then no other will be. The staff on their 24/7 line also seem undertrained (borderline rude) and the grounds for denial were not detailed at all. This is a sham and I recommend staying away from it - it is a waste of time and money.

When I started with Trupanion, my monthly insurance for emergency care, wellness care not included was $24.99, they’ve increased my rate every year but one I now pay 64.99 a month. I’ve called them approximately three years ago they told me if I raise my premium I could pay less. I did so three different agents quoted me my new rate, however I was not charged that lower rate. The manager told me I was quoted the other rate in error but yet three different people made that same error. Fortunately my dog has been relatively healthy. In the last seven years they’ve paid me seven dollars. I would not recommend Trupanion.

Not worth it, practically a scam. They tell you that you have a deductible. What they don't tell you is that your deductible is per incident and per year. Nevertheless my dog had 1 issue that was treated over 4 different times and they categorized it as separate incidents - when I called them to find out what happened they said my DR notes weren't clear enough, after clearing it for them they said they will re-open the claim and follow up with me within 1 week. It's been 45 days. No one contacted me. When I finally reached out they said "I do not see any appeals on file at this time. I do see you previously spoke with Alyssa, who was going to contact the vet for you regarding filing an appeal." What a waste of my time and money.... I feel like this was a "bait and switch". I feel deceived by the sign up process. I was told one thing when on the call asking about signing up and in the solicitation email, then another after the fact. They use a very promising short form for the contract that makes you think this is the coverage and it's complete and simple, when, in fact, there's a longer contract (which they send you AFTER you've signed up so that you probably don't think to read it, since you've already signed up and paid and think you know what you've gotten!).
Additionally, if you do have a claim or a problem it seems as if there is a policy of placating clients with kind words but doing nothing. It seems many of the below reviewers have had similar experiences. In my case, the "doing nothing" went so far as to not only deny 100% of my claims in with lightning speed, but also to deny me access to the person making the decisions (if indeed there was a person -- it may just be a policy script and my issue may never have been escalated as they said it was.) They did not provide information I requested (like who denied this). They did not provide contact information such as email or phone for the department they claimed made the decisions. In fact, they went so far as to say that their legal department has no phone numbers or external email communication ability. Hmmm.
So, I had every claim denied and was not allowed to reach anyone directly. Think about that: It's a complete shut out. That sure sounds like this is policy, not just a bad experience by 1 client. The only reason I had contact with anyone at Trupanion was because they had a person writing me to claim that I wasn't sending in my dogs old medical records (which they then apologized for and acknowledged receiving way back when they asked for them -- I see this is a recurring problem from the below reviews).
After analyzing more critically how their policy is worded, I see that it's quite clever. Unless they voluntarily act in good faith, they have a policy that is worded such that almost every possible claim can be either denied or placed under the deductible amount (I'm referring to dogs signed up later in life, not as puppies). They cherry pick data from your dog's past (one example: My vet, 1 year prior, at a normal exam, pressed on my dog's throat to make her cough. She did that, and therefore A YEAR later when she had an actual cough and I took her in for a diagnostic - they denied the claim because she had a "pre-existing condition" having been made to cough once before. They also chose to ignore the vet notes, on the same line, that this cough had started days before and was something new). This is so blatant I hardly know what to say.
As a result of my experience with them, I started looking at Trupanion's history and see there's a recent history of practices that can be described as deceptive: namely they agreed only a few weeks ago to be fined over $100,000 (they signed a consent order in Washington State end of June 2019) for a variety of violations that don't speak well of their forthrightness. In addition there is a recent BBB, NAD report that states they made misleading claims about a competitor and as a result they agreed to change those representations. I will be proceeding with further research and with the appropriate state agencies and insurance regulatory agencies to see if these are the only two complaints and to find out what I can do too since Trupanion will do nothing, not even provide the name of the person who denied my request nor engage in any sort of negotiation, good faith or otherwise.
I hope that if there are other cases or complaints that people will share this information. I had hoped it was an aberration but I'm worried it's their method of doing business and that's just wrong. I would hate to see this happen to others. It was devastating for me to lose my dog and feel that I'd been conned, all at the same time.

BEWARE of the this company. They used to have a great reputation, but things have changed dramatically for the worse over the years. They do whatever they can to make leaping ties to pre-existing conditions so they don't have to cover any claims. Unless you have a puppy that has zero known health issues, you're better off setting aside the money you'd pay each month to Trupanion for vet bills and/or an emergency account. I've now spent $3,000 with them over the years, have submitted at least 15 claims, and they've covered one of them. An example of one of the claims they rejected was when my dog injured her ear (an acute physical injury) and they refused to cover the cost of treatment because she had an ear infection 4 years prior. It's ridiculous and infuriating. The only good that can come out of my situation is if someone else is able to benefit from it. I've heard good things about Healthy Paws. Good luck!

What’s that old expression about “if it’s too good to be true...?” We took our nearly 12 year-old mutt Clyde to the vet for his annual check-up in early June. He needed expensive dental work, so the vet talked us into signing up for their clinic care plan. We also received a free trial month of Trupanion. I’ll be honest, I looked at the cost of the Trupanion plan post-trial and thought, “it’s just not worth it.” As an older dog, Clyde carried a hefty monthly premium.
About a week later, Clyde came inside from his 5am potty break and I noticed a lot of bubbles coming out if his mouth. He seemed OK at first, but it happened again 5 hours later. Turns out, he suffered partial seizures that evolved into grand mal seizures. I’ll jump ahead and spare you the heartbreaking details. Suffice it to say, we had to put Clyde down in a matter of weeks. A brain tumor escalated quickly.
After the exam for the first seizures, I started feeling nauseous about the costs to come. The vet was talking about MRI’s and overnight stays. My wife reminded me of the Trupanion policy. I was extremely skeptical this would work. I went online and read the reviews. Most people who were unhappy seemed frustrated by the creative ways Trupanion could deem something a “preexisting condition.”
So I called Trupanion looking for reassurance. Yes, we were only a few days into the free month. Yes, I realize this sure seems “convenient.” But the first symptoms were hours old. The rep said it didn’t sound preexisting. So we thought as awful as it is going through this with our beloved animal, at least somehow we were blessed with a silver lining.
We submitted the first claim about a day after the first symptoms. Then the second claim. Ultimately: six claims. We waited. The trial period expired. We paid the first month’s premium of $135. We waited. I wrote-in to inquire about the status. No reply. We waited. Today, more than a month after the first symptoms, I woke-up to a batch of six emails from Trupanion. All six emails were sent around 2:20am on a Saturday morning. And all six emails feature the same explanation of benefits which turns out to be a denial of benefits.
“Ineligible.” I know what you’re thinking: Trupanion figured out how to call it a preexisting condition. No, actually they concocted an even more devious reason. Section 9A of the fine print says there is a waiting period of 30 days after illness. We would have been OK if we had activated a special offer that waived this waiting period within 24 hours of the first exam. Funny how the Trupanion rep didn’t mention this when we called within 5 hours of the first exam. The whole purpose of that call was to try to poke holes in the fantasy idea that we would have help paying for procedures we knew were yet to come.
We are out nearly $3,000. More importantly, we have lost our dog. Trupanion won’t pay a dime thanks to section 9A. I am not devastated because my gut told me Trupanion would figure out a way to deny. Ever read “The Rainmaker?” Ultimately health insurers, whether representing bipedal or four-legged species follow the model of “Great Benefit:” deny, deny, deny.
Since Trupanion has wasted my time, I’m going to return the favor. It begins with this review. Next step: a formal complaint to the Washington State Attorney General. And so on... Even if you stopped reading awhile ago, you already knew how to answer the first question posed in this review. I hope one day I can be surprised by an insurance company that does the right thing.

This company is awesome at collecting your premiums. They also are awesome at raising those premiums annually like precision clockwork while claiming the don’t increase premiums annually due to age of dog. Instead, they claim increase is due to “increase in vet costs in your area.” Awesome for them since they don’t actually pay for much anyway and if they do it is not without a fight. Declined coverage previously for mass removal surgery claiming it was related to Addison’s disease which was pre-existing. I understand Addison’s is pre-existing and not covered. The surgery was not related. Appeal quickly filed and decision overturned. Great.
This time treatment for sebaceous cyst infection and removal of cyst claim submitted. Approved. Great. My problem is they approved amount MINUS deductible of $500. Got my puppy (German Shephard) and went to my vet shortly after to get her checked up and get everything going for her spay. We then started noticing after her surgery, that when we were teaching her how to sit, we could feel her hips popping. So as a RESPONSIBLE pet owner should, we went into the vet to try to figure out what's going on. The vet said it could be hip dysplasia but the only way to know for sure is that we do an x-ray. So we say OK and the vet said but in case it is, it would be a good idea to get pet insurance as it could become costly. And they recommended us to Trupanion. So we got it and then a couple months after getting her policy we take her to have her hips x-rayed. And she does have bilateral hip dysplasia. So I submit my claim on it because we now have an appointment to have a surgical consultation because its so severe and shes not even a year old yet.
They are taking forever to process the claim so I call and they say they sent me an email, (which they didnt) to get more info from me. So I tell them she has her consultation next week so I need the claim expedited to get everything squared away. So they do and not only have they denied my claim for her x-ray and diagnosis, but they have also denied the surgery coming up because of the time I took her to the vet because her hips popped. So because her hips popped before I got coverage (EVEN THOUGH SHE WASNT DIAGNOSED YET) they consider it pre-existing and will not cover anything. They claim to all be pet lovers and pet owners and understanding but at the end of the day that dont care about anything but the money. It took me months and months to close out a case, ultimately denied, when three vets treating my pet wrote and spoke to them to dispute their findings. In the end, it wasn't the money or lack of it that irritated me, it was the sugar sweet pretense of caring as they bumbled through their delaying tactics to find a rationale for their denial. REAL COVERAGE = 35% + PREMIUM INCREASES = 100%. Trupanion mischaracterizes its coverage when it claims to provide 90% coverage. Here are the disclaimers they should add every time they make that claim:
*TRUPANION applies a CONDITION deductible for every condition the Vet treats. On my first Vet visit, I reported several symptoms which were treated as individual conditions each subject to separate deductibles. For me, DEDUCTIBLES represented 50% of the bill.
*TRUPANION does not reimburse the vet's administrative charges. For me, ADMIN charges represented more than 10% of the bill.
Also, in my experience, I started with TRUPANION at a reasonable premium which was then increased by 100% after a couple years without any explanation and despite the fact that I had never used the insurance. Makes me wonder if that is actually part of a pricing strategy.

My 10 year old German Shepherd has been insured with Trupanion for over 3 years. This year, he developed neurological problems with his back legs. At the recommendation of his orthopedist, I had an MRI done, the beginning of April (4/4/19). I submitted the claim immediately. Trupanion requested and received records from my vets. Then several weeks later, requested additional records going back over 4 years. It is 5/13/19, and they still have not processed my claims. Additionally, my dog receives physical therapy for a previous injury (that was covered) and the PT claims, since the MRI, have not been processed, either. There are currently 6 claims, pending processing. I have contacted customer service several times and keep getting the runaround.
Unfortunately, this is not my first experience like this with Trupanion. Two years ago, my younger German Shepherd had cruciate surgery. Trupanion requested extensive records and took a prolonged amount of time to review the records, then determined the torn cruciate was a pre-existing condition from 2 yrs prior. It should be noted that these are competition dogs and this dog successfully compete during those 2 yrs; including jumping a hurdle and climbing walls, which should have been impossible with a torn cruciate. Both my general vet and the surgeon appealed the decision, but Trupanion refused to acknowledge that the injury was not pre-existing. Needless to say, I switched him to a different insurance company and couldn't be more pleased with them.
Given the history and the extent to which Trupanion is going, I fully expect them to try to deny this claim, as well. Obviously, my vets will appeal the decision, again, but Trupanion does not seem interested in reality, only their bottom line. We're back to rehab, today, so that will make 7 claims pending, and counting. Bottom line is that Trupanion will do everything they can to avoid covering injuries. The last thing you need is to be going through something traumatic with your pet and then be refused coverage by the insurance company you've been paying for years. I STRONGLY recommend any insurance company except Trupanion.

I have had pet insurance since my dog was 2 months old. She is now 13. I have never filed a claim until recently. I went to the vet because of some tags that got worse and also, there was formation on her body that was filled with liquid. I thought it may be cancer, etc. I went to the vet to have her examined and he opined that it is most unlikely that it is cancer.
Second, vet stated that her teeth was very decayed and opined that unlike humans, dog's teeth can lead to other health concerns, starting with gum disease. He stated that it may require extraction, but do thorough examine the extent of her condition, he would need to sedate her and if necessary, surgery. I agreed, because it's my dog. My vet's office advised me that I have met my deductible of $1000 and that most likely will get back about $2400.
I proceeded and was advised on the day of the surgery that the vet will call me if the damage required surgery (extraction). It is emotionally horrifying because few things that my dog enjoys is chewing and to deprive of that one thing made me ache. Anyhow, the vet called me on the phone that her bottom teeth (and he named the numbers) are badly damaged and it would have to be extracted and asked for my permission which I gave. Then I got a second call, that upon examination of the second set of teeth, it was also irreversible and it should be extracted for the health of my dog. I cried but I have permission. The claim was filed by my vet and Trupanion denied my claim based on the fact that she did not have cancer.
1. I went there to "rule out cancer" and so their argument is, since my dog did not have cancer, they denied the claim. So that means, she has to have cancer? Why would I need an insurance if I know she is going to die?
2. Trupanion denied my claim for the teeth because it was "cleaning". The word that they use vs. facts related to my dog is different. I clean my dog's teeth and to prevent gum disease. The "deep examination and surgery under sedation " is NOT cleaning. Their interpretation of the word " cleaning" vs. " extraction" because it is a disease that may permeate to other health issues. It would not be called " surgery" if it was "cleaning".
I asked them to explain and they were unable to distinguish the meaning and application of the two words. I think surgery is a serious issue after the fact and to prevent further damage, whereas cleaning does not have disease factor, but merely a check up. They denied my coverage and I had to pay out close to $3000 and the years of premium I paid was worthless and their subjective interpretation was wrong. Trupanion is NOT a good company and the pet insurance is by far the biggest scam.

Of course you can file an appeal assuming you and your vet have this kind of extra time on your hands. Don't waste your money. Heard great things about Healthy Paws so will be looking into them.

I just had a major claim denied for my 10 yr old lab. She had a skin tag on her eyelid that had previously fallen off but HAD NOT BEEN TREATED. The tag grew back and was irritating her eye. It was growing quickly and the Vet said it needed to come off ASAP or she would need to go to an expensive specialist. Trupanion denied the claim because she had always had the skin tag - even though it had never previously been a problem.
I read all of the reviews and conclude that I will keep my cats on the plan because I put them on when they were kittens. The happiest policy owners are those that signed their pets up as kittens or puppies. If your pet is older - beware - because there are too many ways for Trupanion to deny and you are wasting your money with all of the exclusions and pre-existing requirements and conditions.

Bought insurance from Trupanion when my dog was 5 months old in May 2017. The premium quoted was $79.40. Within a year in May 2018, received an email saying due to veterinary equipments cost, the premium has updated to $100.74 per month. I have received an email today that for the love of our pet, the monthly premium has updated to $120.43 as of May 31, 2019. Basically there’s a ~30% increment the 1st year and ~20% the 2nd year. My dog has just turned 2 and have never submitted a claim. If I do the calculations right, I will be paying a couple hundred dollars when she’s 5. I’m looking for another insurance company since my dog is still young. Although they said they won’t increase the premium due to your pet’s age, they do raise the premium with other reasons.

When we got our dog, we figured we needed to do a bunch of things to take care of him. Getting insurance and signing him up for a vet seemed among the most important for his health. We did both but unfortunately we didn't think to wait to go to the vet for 30 days after signing up for the insurance. Trupanion has a 30 day sort of waiting period after you sign up. The vet told us that Hugo (our dog) had a heart problem, and eventually it turned out that we'd need him to have an $8000 surgery. Trupanion said that because we went during the 30-day waiting period they wouldn't cover it. Had we just waited for some days until the period ended, presumably they'd have covered it. The lesson I'd say, is if you're with Trupanion--they want you to avoid seeking medical care for your pet until their bureaucratic rules complete their term. On the other hand, they offered plenty of faux sympathy. If you value that be sure to make your monthly payments.

I am deeply dissatisfied with the services Trupanion offers. I pay a monthly fee of 89 CAD just to cover every condition on my own. Recently my dog had to have a molar tooth extracted because it was broken. The procedure costed 1200 CAD, I covered the 700 CAD deductible, which I knew I have to cover, and they covered only 300 CAD. I recently discovered another fractured tooth and took my dog to the vet, we are trying to avoid extraction and got him antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. However, Trupanion does not want to cover because apparently it counts as a new conditions, which it does not, because he already had a broken tooth condition before.
It does not say that in their policy and now I am paying my monthly fees and on top of that I have to pay for the vet bill, which should be covered because I have already paid the deductible of that condition. I would most definitely not recommend Trupanion as you will end up paying for a service that almost never covers anything. Because apparently every single vet trip counts as a separate condition and you have to pay a deductible of 700 CAD first, which most likely you would never fulfill. Therefore, you are better off saving that 89 CAD every month and putting it towards vet bills.

We have had Trupanion for both our dog (8 years) and our cat (5 years). In January, our cat became severely ill, and a referral was made by our local vet to a specialty clinic. He was in Critical Care there for 5 days, had numerous ultrasounds, lab tests, a blood transfusion, a bone marrow biopsy, and had to have a feeding tube inserted. Yesterday, we had to take him back in for an infection at the feeding tube site. To date, Trupanion has been nothing but great! We have the 90/10 plan with a $100 deductible. Our bills to date have totaled almost $17K and Trupanion has paid 90% of those bills, excluding exams (yes, even including the ICU exams) and state taxes. We will have a big decision to make in the next day or so, but at least cost consideration will not have to play a role in whether to euthanize or not.
People complain about the cost. Yes, it's high (we pay $113/month for both our pets). No, they don't cover exams (which I wish they did, especially in emergency situations). No, they don't pay for preventive care (but our local vet offers those types of plans, so maybe people should check with their vets & see if such plans are available). But when the chips are down, they came through with prompt payment and kindness in dealing with us. I see a lot of bad reviews here, but I have to admit that I simply don't get it. If you have something catastrophic happen like we've had happen, you realize how worth it the insurance is.

So I've had this policy for a couple of years on my very healthy and very large dog. I got it because sometimes these big dogs have patella problems, hip, what have you. So he stepped on a thorn or something the other day and I took him in and the vet filed a claim, which was stupid on my part and theirs as well because now "limping" has been deemed a pre-existing condition. And heaven forbid, the dog needs knee surgery down the road and they have "limping" on his record. I asked the Trupanion clerk on the phone if it were possible that in the event the dog had a knee problem that they wouldn't cover it and she said, yes it was possible because perhaps it could be related to the aforementioned "limping." TOTAL SCAM.
Needless to say, I cancelled the reservation after thousands of dollars spent on an insurance that is pretty useless. I recently had my first significant claim when our Basset Hound developed glaucoma. Since we have $1000 deductible, I submitted all the receipts totally approximately $1250.00. I was told by their representative that evaluations and diagnostics were covered, but Trupanion disallowed all these claiming that these were merely "exams". My dog has had over 13 appointments to diagnosis his eyesight and adjust his medications, and Trupanion did not pay for a doctor's' appointment even when an ophthalmologist was involved!
The representative advised me to appeal and have the doctors code the visits as diagnostic evaluations. I did so and asked my veterinarian to send me an email as soon as this was faxed to Trupanion. I ACTUALLY RECEIVED TRUPANION'S DENIAL OF THE APPEAL BEFORE I RECEIVED OUR VET'S EMAIL. I called my vet to save the records and advised them to NEVER recommend Trupanion again. Once I started filing claims however, they tied everything back to her kidney problem (even though it was no longer an issue). Once I was told that my vet couldn't prove that the issue WASN'T due to her kidneys. Sometimes they pay claims with no issues, but most of the time they are denied claiming the issue was due to kidney function, even though her kidneys are functioning perfectly.
During a routine exam last year my vet found a heart murmur. The first claim was paid. In Jan I took her in for a follow up exam (which was at no charge) and they denied the meds and test results stating that: 1) the meds and supplements she was given (which are supposed to be covered) "may help treat her chronic kidney disease" (which she does not have) and 2) the radiographs and x-rays are not labeled properly with her name so they maintain they are not for my cat. Not only was I in the room when the films were done but the lab report specifically cites tests for my cat by name.
The rules they cite in their denial, which they provided, do NOT specify that the names have to be visible, only that they have to be maintained at the vet's office. My vet has corresponded with them, I have called them repeatedly on this claim, but they still deny it. They will deny claims for any reason they can conjure up. I DO NOT recommend them. I signed up figuring what the heck, I had nothing to lose, but I had no confidence in them covering anything. Reading through the site's rules, normally there's an 18 month waiting period (meaning you aren't covered for something in that time), but signing up for my 30 day trial through the vet sponsorship, the website said there were no waiting periods in my case.
So I filed my claim after a ~4K bill for an MRI. A month later Trupanion says my claim is closed, they will pay nothing since this was a pre-existing condition. Which of course was the case since I signed up after going to see a vet in the first place! What a sham. Plus, if you're paying over 100 bucks a month as a premium, and you have to wait 18 months to get anything back (and that's not guaranteed), you are way better off just saving a bit as an emergency fund for your pet. If you have a sick pet and you can't afford your monthly premium, sure you can raise your deductible to lower the rate - however - now you have to meet that new increased deductible on your illnesses for them to resume payment on your claims! I got in contact with Trupanion immediately to figure out my options. I first spoke to Amber ** and she told me as long as my veterinarian approved the alternate care they would cover it. She was suppose to send over a pre-approval form but never attached it to the email. I then had to contact them three more times over the next week to try and get this pre-approval form. Finally today I spoke to Bonnie **, just to be informed that what is being recommended for me to do as an alternative healing process (laser therapy) is not covered by my $120 a month coverage plan.
I have had to take my boy to three different vets and pay out of pocket, they don't cover office visits, to get a veterinarian to sign off on a paper and estimate and now they won't even cover it. And then she informed me they have an extended plan (never mentioned to me) that would cover it BUT won't now because it would be considered pre-existing with the new plan. At that point I was so frustrated that I wanted to cancel my plan altogether just to be informed they can't cancel it on the weekend and someone will be in contact with me in 2-3 business days.
I'm sorry Monday is in one day, and I am unhappy with your service and now you're telling me I have to wait longer than Monday to cancel my plan? I'm not sure how they expect me to have my pets seen, diagnosed, and prescribed medication without actually having them examined.
What's more, the piddling amount for medication that was applied to the deductible will mean nothing if they need to go back for another issue, as EACH INDIVIDUAL ISSUE is considered a new $250 deductible. I signed up for their 30 day free trial. Well, something did actually come up unrelated. Within a week, after being on the mend and acting like himself again, he began to feel unwell, but this time with a round of totally different symptoms. The ER vet assured me this was completely unrelated to the pancreatitis and was a totally different matter. I submitted the claim to Trupanion and it was denied. I called and every time you call to speak with insurance you speak to someone different. None of their employees have extension numbers and their automated emails come back constantly. Finding a human on the other end to help you is nearly impossible. I spoke with two supervisors and 5 different reps for the company. All of them acted all kind and said the claim would be pre approved and would go through. Well it did not.
They are claiming that my dog had a preexisting anxiety issue, so therefore they can’t cover the ** that Vets use for any Pet when they have surgery. They also said that it was in their policy that I have to pay a deductible for every tumor as if they are separate issues. All the tumors are different types and unless my vet can prove otherwise then they won’t cover 90% as promised. They also stare even if I do know the types and they are the same that I still have to pay a deductible for each tumor. This is insane.
They just want your $$ and when you are in distress with your pet and they fail to come through they are worthless. I am not happy with %50 coverage when they have said 90% in their ads. Might I add they sent me a new policy stating I had to renew it or lose coverage when it wasn’t due to be renewed. Yet they determine when they get to rewrite their own policy in order to manipulate how much $$ they will cover for your pet. If you have faced similar issues send me an email because I am considering a class action lawsuit. This company shouldn’t exist in my opinion. SAVE YOUR $$$ because in the end they will say one of the following: It’s preexisting. It’s not covered in their policy or somehow they will change their policy. In December my Therapy Dog was hospitalized for seizures due to tick meds and rabies shot, I paid the hospital and put in for the payment of the hospitalization, it took them forever to pay AND THEY REQUESTED ALL THE SAME RECORDS AGAIN.
I recently put in for meds which are supposed to be covered, mind you just MEDS, so guess what they AGAIN ASK FOR ALL THE SAME RECORDS. 1165 PAGES WERE FAXED TO THEM, now they are telling me they don't cover manicures... I did not put in for a manicure. I only put in for meds... Don't waste your money. The aggravation alone isn't worth it. I would not mind but the salespeople did such a good job selling Marty ** and Michelle ** that I believed them and bought the insurance right away WITHOUT DOING AN RESEARCH, not only that but I foolishly recommended several friends who purchased the insurance, now I am going to look like an idiot.
Now I am stuck, my little dog is 11 now and she has a couple of issues. I am sure I am paying into Trupanion for absolutely nothing so they can look for "any" reason not to pay. They are responding to me for things I never put in for. They are joke a very bad joke. So discouraged and disappointed. PLEASE IF YOU LOVE YOUR DOG OR CAT STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM TRUPANION.

After getting my pet at a shelter I received a voucher for a free month of insurance with this company on August 18th. I "activated" his voucher for the free coverage (yet I never received an email or anything of the sort with a policy number). Fast forward to August 25th, I took him into the vet for an unexpected visit to have his eye looked at. I paid out of pocket due to not receiving a policy number from them from the voucher I "activated". I "officially" enrolled him with Trupanion about on the 29th of August.
Fast forward another month. I had to make another unexpected vet visit for the same problem previously. Since I had his "official" policy number from his enrollment - I gave it to the vet to submit claims totaling over $400. Trupanion declined EVERY SINGLE CLAIM! I called their customer service line to speak with someone on why none of these are covered. Well - according to them my voucher was never "activated" and the claims are now considered a "pre-existing condition", which they do not cover. I gave the customer care rep the voucher code I used for his free month. The customer care rep said she would speak to a manager to see if they can do anything regarding this matter.
4 days later, I get an email from the Customer Care manager saying there is nothing they can do and any further treatment for his issue will not be covered due to it being before his "official" enrollment date. SO basically I am paying them $50/mo. for nothing?! Needless to say I am cancelling them IMMEDIATELY. I would never recommend them to ANYONE EVER! Seems like they are just like every other insurance company, they want you to pay them but don't want to pay anything for you! STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!

First of all there's only one hospital that accepts Trupanion Express which they don't tell you about unless you ask. And that hospital is the worst. Big surprise... they say no to everything... to them everything's a pre-existing condition. Well I know my dog and it's not it's the veterinarians that don't know what the hell they're doing or saying veterinarians are worse than Trupanion. All they do is rise prices and ruin your dog. I'm suing 3 vet and Trupanion might be the fourth lawsuit. Anyone in?

Do not insure with these people. Expensive - but they deny every claim. They will look for any little loophole or hyper technical reading of the policy, in order to deny the claim. Sometimes, they will grant the claim and apply it to the deductible, then once you exceed the deductible, they will deny the claim for the very same condition. I have an entire stack of denials, most all of them inconsistent. They then make you go through an Appeals process, which is just a front for another "sorry, denied" email.
They also pepper you with repeated requests for the same information, over and over and over - and send emails that state that the "claim will be closed" because of "insufficient" information, even when you have responded fully with all applicable medical records. All our pets are rescue pets. They deserve better than to be insured by a company, the sole purpose of which is to take your premiums and deny your claims. Shame on Trupanion. There is a special place in purgatory for companies like this - shame shame shame. Avoid at all costs. Do not use.

I signed up for Trupanion after my dog was diagnosed with giardia. Turns out a side effect of giardia is diarrhea. I take him to the vet, get him treated and the vet prescribes him meds. (No coverage!) but Diarrhea is gone. 2 months later, my dog eats a dead bird. He gets a really bad upset tummy for a whole week. I take him to the vet for the diarrhea, and what do you know! Trupanion now claims any diarrhea is somehow related to the giardia. Coverage denied!
3 months later, dog gets conjunctivitis and a swollen eye, with a slight infection. Take him to the vet for treatment. Call Trupanion. No coverage! Your $250 deductible starts over with every single individual illness the dog may develop. Oh... on top of that, exam fees, x-rays, sick visits, shots, emergency visits, nothing that helps the vet determine the illness is covered. This company scams people. Everything I've had to pay for the dog so far has been out of pocket. DO NOT FALL FOR THEIR SCAM. Nationwide is a lot better with much better prices.

I'm a believer in insurance as a method of sharing genuine risks across many people. Providing abuse is kept under control, insurance works. I am, however, very disappointed with Trupanion. My dog ate rat poison from a neighbor's yard and we rushed him to hospital. My Trupanion file says the claim was "accepted." Hooray. But does that mean they fulfilled their role of shared risk? No. They paid nothing because more than half the money I paid the hospital was determined to be an "examination." The other half was the deductible. The deductible I have no issue with (part of the shared risk I'm prepared to accept). But the "examination"? I brought my dog to the pet's equivalent of an emergency room.
This suggests that every time you take your pet to a hospital or clinic or vet, not only do you have to pay the deductible, but you also have to pay for an "examination," which effectively doubles your deductible. This is a much larger deductible than their feel-good/pet-friendly advertising suggests. I'm disappointed and irritated at this bit of trickery (in my opinion), and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the company. I believe that Trupanion and their resellers and supporters (including vets and animal hospitals) should make this double-the-cost-deductible very clear to their customers... before they buy into the product.

I have 18 months of policy coverage for my dog, in good standing. Then she had a cancer diagnosis with $2400 in treatment. My policy has $1000 deductible and 10% co-pay. Trupanion adjusters reimbursed me just $670. Where's the rest? Turns out one can interpret "treatment" and "examination" in whichever way suits the company. "Examinations" are excluded from the policy. So unless your vet line items separately things like: "massaged exterior of tumor to diagnose size," and "restrained dog in calm position to perform lab sampling" etc... then Trupanion insists all of those actions are part of an "examination" which has nothing to do with treating your pet's condition.
The policy documents are written to be intentionally vague. I requested a contract document with definition of each of these terms and was denied it. Bottom line -- you should expect this policy to cover diagnostics, labs, surgeries. And not to cover anything else that your veterinarian actually does. Then you can do the math on whether it's worth it -- $1000/year for coverage that winds up covering about 25% of real costs for treatment, on a per-diagnosis basis. Meaning, you'd have to have about a minimum $5000 vet expense, for one single emergency or injury, every other year in order to break even.

Purchased pet insurance in June for my dog. In August my dog had watery eye. I bought over the counter pet eye drops for the dog. Which is 60 days after I purchase insurance. The eye drops worked for about a week. Next week she started scratching her eye a lot. I took her to the vet on 8/30. Vet gave me eye creams for dog see if they worked. 9-6 went back for recheck. He said eye not getting better. Had me schedule another appointment on 9-16. At that time he said she needs surgery asap. She has developed an ulcer cornea.
Sent claims in to Trupanion. They denied it saying that this happened prior to the 30 day waiting period. It had been almost 60 days. Then vet sent them a letter explaining this is not a pre existing injury. They said letter from him means nothing and they still maintain this is pre existing and will not pay anything. So I researched on internet and they have been doing this to a lot of their customers. So they are just scamming people out of their money.

Upon being informed that the current condition being filed for in the claim was not "pre-existing" I was constantly informed that the appeals process was "lengthy and complex and could take over 6 weeks"... I received a free month trial of this company's policy when I rescued my dog. On the day I rescued him he was in an accident and I didn't find out until $2,000 later that the policy doesn't cover anything until the day AFTER it's activated. Nothing in any of the material they made available said this. I searched high and low for a document outlining actual coverage and exceptions and I could never find one. I was never sent one and it was not available on their website. Not only do they not cover anything on the day you create your policy, but I also discovered they do not cover exams (a very huge thing to not cover!), X-rays, administrative fees, and a lot of very basic things that I would expect insurance to cover.
Yes, their customer service is overly friendly, I'll give them that. But having a peppy, happy voice while they tell you nothing is covered doesn't make it any better. Honestly, save your money. Unless you've had your animal for at least 18 months, they have a spotless record so far, and your vet charges almost nothing for exams, you'll end up paying almost everything out of pocket. They'll find ways to wiggle out of anything.

I had a few vet visits after that for gastroenteritis that Trupanion covered, however now they claim it’s a pre-existing condition. My dog’s first vet visit, right after rescuing her, it was documented that she had loose stool as a result of changing her food. Now, any visit where my dog had loose stools, Trupanion will refuse to reimburse. They went as far as to tell me that the visits that were covered for the gastroenteritis, were covered on behalf of the company's mistake. There are many ailments where loose stools/diarrhea is a symptom. So it’s basically their excuse to not cover anything.

We have had pets our whole life and the majority have had pretty serious health issues. We all know how expensive that can be for pet parents. Well we were blessed with a puppy this past October and we knew immediately that we would get pet insurance for her. I did a lot of research and we decided on Trupanion for our Border Collie (Penny). I really liked what I read about them and if I’m going to be complaining honest, I had a good vibe or gut feeling about them.
Fast forward to this past month and poor Penny was really sick. She was incredibly lethargic and would not eat at all. In a matter of days she lost three pounds and I had to carry her to go pee outside. I lost it! My husband and I love her so much. Needless to say, we were incredibly worried and we rushed her to our Vet. After spending just under $1000 on diagnostics/medications I am happy to say Penny is on the mend! She has gained a pound and a half and is eating properly again. We are not exactly sure what the issue was with Penny but it was very scary and the last thing you want to do is stress about money at that time!
Here’s the thing, Trupanion was so awesome, I really cannot say enough about them. The process to file a claim was very simple and more than that, they were incredibly sweet and professional when I had the occasion to speak with them over the phone. I had the pleasure of talking to Carmen and I hope for your sake if you are a customer you have the pleasure of talking to her! I can honestly say that she is a true animal lover just like the ad says! What a lovely lady! The entire experience with Trupanion has just been an absolute pleasure! We have already been reimbursed for 90% of our fees (minus the deductible of course ) and I can honestly say I feel blessed to be part of the Trupanion family. I have already told everyone we know to go through Trupanion for pet insurance and I know we will do the same for all of our pets in the future.

Your dog is hit by a car. You take him to the emergency room, it's a covered injury and you have pet insurance. The deductible on your insurance is $100 and 90% paid. That's what you have been paying, so that's what you think is the coverage. WRONG. Trupanion won't cover the veterinarian to examine your dog. Your dog can't be treated without being examined. Then they won't cover the surgeon to review the Xrays. The surgeon can't operate on your dog without reviewing the Xrays. So the $100 deductible was NEVER going to be the deductible because many of the services REQUIRED to treat your pet aren't covered by the insurance. And Trupanion not being a reputable company, they don't disclose this when you sign up and pay the expensive premiums. It's in the fine print most of us don't read. Read the other negative reviews before signing up for Trupanion, I sure wish I had read them.

Our cat is prone to upper respiratory infections. Our vet wanted to do some testing to rule out any illnesses that cause these infections. She said that it's perfectly plausible that she's perfectly healthy and simply prone to URIs because of her breed (she's a mixed rescue and we don't know exactly what kind of breeds are "in her", so it's reasonable to believe that she's simply got a breed that is prone to breathing issues) but she wanted to do some testing to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with her.
Trupanion is not going to cover any of the testing (suggested by our vet was an endoscopy and a chest xray) and also won't cover treatment for any further Upper Respiratory Infections. Somehow being prone to certain types of infections (that occur every few months) is considered a "pre existing condition". Our rate was around $50 and every time our cat is sick, our vet charges around $100 for the exam and medication. And let's not forget that Trupanion DOES NOT cover ANY KIND of examination, so essentially, all they cover is the $50 for medication. Which means in order for this insurance to be profitable for us, our cat would have to have an URI every month. Which...she doesn't. It's more of a semi-annual thing.
