Our male Labradoodle, Jake, is a little over a year now. We got him through Greenfield Puppies, which was like the middleman, and they were very good. I talked to them on the phone and they helped us out with the process. Jake had to be flown up here to Massachusetts. Jake's a good dog. He's a little honey.

I bought a Jack Russell Pug (Jug) mix 7 years ago. From the moment I bought him at the breeder's home, I knew he was a puppy mill dog. The parents were not on site and the dogs were kept in a barn that I was not able to see. My dog was infested with fleas and ended up having, per the vet, physical and medical signs of being a puppy mill dog. My dog had many medical conditions and was very aggressive despite many, many efforts with behavioral specialists, puppy classes, and lots of love to help this. My dog ended up dying due to his medical conditions and no, I'm not writing this because I'm angry. I'm angry because I didn't write it sooner to warn other people that Greenfield Puppies contracts out to all puppy mill breeders in the Lancaster Area.

I purchased a 12 week old chocolate lab puppy from Greenfield in September. We found the puppy on line and I didn't see anything but positive feedback when I researched Greenfield online. We arrived to an Amish farm with an outdoor pen with five or six puppies. Neither parents was on the premises and I should have left at that point but; however, I purchased a small female pup just to get her out of the pen. She had a scar under her eye but looked to be in good health. When we took her to our vet, she was infested with fleas and as a result she had worms. When I contacted Greenfield they told me to contact the breeder. I certainly would not purchase a puppy from them in the future.

On January 31, 2015, my husband and I traveled to Honey Brook, PA to pick up a beautiful Cockapoo puppy by the name of Nora. We thought we were dealing with a reputable kennel. Upon pulling into the driveway of this breeder's home, we began to have second thoughts. We walked into this home that had a horrific odor. That should have been the first clue! We walked down to the basement to see our beautiful Nora. We were stunned! She did not look anything like the puppy we saw online. Feces and urine were the only thing that stood out. The breeder barely spoke to us. He handed me a dirty hose soaked puppy. I was heartbroken, but could not leave her there.

We drove Nora home and she had a horrific odor that I can't begin to explain. I have bathed her twice in 2 days and cannot get rid of the smell that permeates throughout my home. The next morning I became sick to my stomach along with scratchy red eyes and a severe itch in my throat. I still can't get rid of the odor. I contacted the Greenfield offices and cannot get a response from Jessica. Finally, I got in contact with Neil, who was downright rude. I then questioned the validity of the so-called vet that was used by this breeder.

Upon looking into the licensure of the vet that was used, I found that the state licensure was suspended. All I can tell you is that it was for animal cruelty and mutilation. I couldn't read all of the documentation. I am sickened!! I can't even go into detail the reason why. I am taking Nora to the vet tomorrow. I am holding my breath!! Please do not use this company! It is a moneymaking operation at the cost of little innocent puppies!!!

    Hello Karen,

For the past few weeks, we have attempted to contact you in regards to your puppy, Nora. We spoke with the breeder, pulled inspection records for his kennel, and had an extensive conversation with him about the events of the day in question. If you could please contact us to resolve any issues you have, we are more than willing to help in any reasonable way. The breeder of this puppy is in good standing with us, and we have no cause for concern that he is mistreating his pets in any way. That being said, I do not want to discount your report and wish to give it the proper attention to guarantee your satisfaction.

Please do not use this website to purchase a puppy. They are nothing more than shills for puppy mills, many of which use inbreeding which will likely cause genetic defects in your dog. Even more important, they are neglectful and are known for animal mistreatment. You are bringing a new member into your family. Please do your research.

These "businesses" offer a 30 day "health" guarantee. You will NOT see most genetic problems that early. No one will be available to guarantee a healthy dog. But if you can't or won't rescue an animal then please have the breeder show you the health clearances for hip, eye, heart for at least the parents. If the demand for these puppies stop, we can only hope that suppliers will get the message.

Kellie, I am sorry you feel this way. We are not a "shill" for puppy mills, as a matter of fact, we have as much disdain for the people who operate these horrible places as you do. We have a process we follow that helps us to weed out the majority of bad breeders before they make our site. We implemented these policies and checks and balances to bring people a reliable resource to find a puppy online. We send people to our breeders so they can meet and see who they are buying a dog from, not to hide anything. I am wondering, did you have a bad experience with one of the breeders we work with? If so lets discuss it so we can get to the bottom of it.

I have great concern about the sales practices of two breeders who advertise with Greenfield Puppies. First, I made an agreement by telephone with John ** of Paradise, PA to be at his home at the first available time (1/26, 8:00 am) to purchase a specific puppy, 200 miles from my home. This was the first date on which the puppy could be purchased. On 1/24 he telephoned to say he sold the puppy-- without consideration for our prior agreement.

Second, I have TRIED to deal with Stephen ** of Ephrata, PA, but he has not bothered to answer my questions. I previously agreed to be at his home To purchase a puppy, but he would not send reasonable photos of his puppies so I cancelled. He also said the puppy in which I was originally interested (1/2/15) was sold, but as of today--3 weeks later--she is still advertised as available on the Greenfield website.

Nancy, we are very sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with the breeders mentioned. We contacted bot breeders based on the names you included in your original message. John informed us that you declined to place a deposit on the puppy you were interested in, and in the meantime another customer who was working with John decided to buy the pup. We hold the breeder harmless in this situation because he made clear a deposit was needed to hold the puppy. The reason being, imagine if he held the puppy for someone who never showed up, in the meantime disappointing multiple other customers for a customer who never came through. All breeder require deposit to hold a puppy, it is commonplace. In regards to Stephen, we took the photos for him and he did not have the ability to send you photos as he does not have internet access. The correct people to contact about additional photos would have been us, who could have assisted you. All of this being said, we apologize for any inconvenience you endured. Thank you!

Be aware what greenfield is. It is not a breeder. Greenfield is no more than a website administer for PA puppy mills. Nothing more, nothing less. Spend 30 seconds searching for reviews. These people over breed, feed the pets cow feed, clip their tails in the backyard, and destroy them if they do not sell. It's simply a money machine. Finally the papers are mostly fake. We purchased a boxer that is not a boxer. They have a local vet that is paid off. Can you get a good, healthy puppy? Sure but just be aware of the people you are supporting. If you truly love dogs, think twice.

I bought a miniature pinscher puppy called Chunky chunk on 11/9/14 when the dog was 10 weeks old. Breeder's name is Sam **. The page said health was guaranteed, vaccinated, AKC registered, vet checked by a breeder - all of that, even professional pictures. I took the puppy to vet 11/11/14 and vet at Petsmart. And vet told me the dogs tail was cut wrong, has skin disease that needs treatment, had a ring worm. The vet told me the dog should had never been sold like that. I eventually got my money back although the "breeder" Sam tried to just change for a different dog for me. Forget the money. I feel terrible for the puppy. The guy is not even a real breeder, he told me later that he is just doing this to go back to his country to visit his parents in Panama, since he got papers. He has more puppies too. They should not be there. :(

We purchased a 12 week-old English Bulldog from a couple in Narvon, PA via the Greenfieldpuppies.com website. Upon having the puppy checked by a vet near our home in Buffalo, NY - the vet immediately found medical issues. The puppy had loose kneecaps that would likely need to be corrected surgically (with a cost of at least $2000 per knee) - and the puppy had a significant heart murmur. The heart murmur was corroborated by 3 other DVMs (on 10-13-14) and we were prompted to see a specialist. The specialist (on 10-14-14) indicated that there was a significant heart murmur and diagnosed the puppy with a hypoplastic trachea (a trachea that is too small and would lead to chronic lung issues).

After an echocardiogram, our worst fears were confirmed. The puppy had heart defects including severe pulmonic stenosis, a thickened wall in the right ventricle of the heart, mild aortic stenosis and a small hole in her heart. These issues are not be able to be corrected surgically. The specialist indicated that possible symptoms of heart trouble could include fainting, fluid accumulation in the puppy's abdomen, shortness in breath and sudden death. At the most, the puppy is expected to live until 4 years old. Despite being checked by a veterinarian (twice) prior to the dog being sold (the latest on 10-6-14) the veterinarian used did not diagnose the murmur that no fewer than 5 other DVMs were able to diagnose immediately.

The puppy was checked by two veterinarians hired by the seller (**, DVM- 9/8/14 and **, DVM 10/6/14 both of Black Horse Animal Hospital in Kinzers, PA), neither diagnosed major congenital and hereditary issues with the puppy's health. Upon closer review of this site, it appears another puppy from the same area may have suffered from a similar heart condition as our puppy and may have come from the same breeder. (Kristina from Holtwood, PA August of 2013). At this time, the sellers - Anna and Justin ** have been communicating with us via telephone and indicate that they will provide a refund - per PA law.

Looked into buying from this place. They list their location in Mount Joy - being a lifelong resident of Mount Joy and on counsel, I looked into it and no "Greenfield Puppies" exists. After researching further, basically they just send you directly to the mill for your puppy. I'm sure some are ok, but my guess based off of all the reviews I'm reading, most are not. A friend just pointed out they have a disclaimer on the bottom of their web page that dissolves them of all responsibility. That says it all.

We met a woman with a lab puppy who had a good experience with Greenfield. Mind you that the puppy was only 12 weeks old. We fell in love with a beautiful cavapoo in Strasburg and called to reserve her. I asked if they could keep her an extra week as we were going on vacation and they said yes if I pay a deposit. I drove 3 hours to their home and was astonished to find the puppies in a wheelbarrow, filthy and scared. They were very small for their age. My heart broke and I was anxious but left a deposit thinking I was rescuing this beautiful puppy from these conditions.

A week later, I receive a letter in the mail asking me to call because they lost my phone number. I call and am told the puppy has died... did I want a different one? Heartbroken, I said no, please send me my deposit back. 2 months later, I had not received it and had my husband contact Greenfield Puppies website manager threatening a lawsuit. I received a check within a week.

My wife and I had a wonderful experience via Greenfield. We had been recommended by a friend who obtained 2 pups through these breeders. We found a mini poodle who looked great in the picture. We've had 3 at one time and figured to add to our one remaining mini poodle. When we first arrived at the breeder's home and saw Fern in Oxford, we immediately fell for her. She was freshly bathed and looked even better in "person." The breeder suggested we get her checked out within 10 days by our vet.

After reading some of the reviews on this website after we picked up our Oreo, we were kinda nervous prior to taking her to our vet. Up until the vet visit, Oreo had been transitioning nicely into our home, even getting along famously with our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter. Usually poodles don't like younger kids. So, this was a pleasant surprise. The pup was from the breeder's pet litter and was roaming freely on the property with her mother and 4 siblings. Certainly not a picture one would find as bad conditions as had been described in many negative Greenfield reviews. The breeders were cordial on the phone and allowed us to pick her up a couple of days prior to the date the website said they'd be ready.

Well, we couldn't be happier to report that our vet today found our Oreo to be in fine shape both physically and noted her wonderful disposition. This was very important to us as we only put down my wife's mom's dog just a few weeks prior with this vet after she had a stroke which left her in bad shape. All in all, I'd say our first experience with Greenfield was positive. It's been hard to not call the breeder back to inquire about the one remaining female pup. Funny but our vet said she was probably not a purebred poodle due to the additional coloring on her belly and hind paws. She said pure poodles would be one color. Vet also said fact that she was not typical pure breed, she'd be less inclined to have any congenital health defects that poodles are accustomed to.

Are we angry or disappointed that she's not pure breed? No way! She's just perfect. Will we have challenges house training her or with the fact that she's a chewer? Of course we will. But we've been there and done that and couldn't be happier with our new "Dogter." We would recommend these breeders to anyone, just as they were to us!

My daughter wanted to see a puppy advertised on the internet by Greenfield puppies, a broker for an Amish breeder named Ben **. So AGAINST my better judgement... and really not wanting to "stereotype" the Amish, I drove out TODAY to their farm to see the cute little cavachon pups that Greenfield has on the net... I can honestly say this breeder has earned the stereotype. It was very sad, when we arrived for an appt we HAD. The mom and the pups were under a bush, in the mud near the front lawn where the woman of the home were husking corn. One of the sisters asked a small boy to get them and she explained that had she known I was coming, she would've cleaned them up a bit. The puppies mom was AFRAID of the back of my hand, as I showed to try and get near her. Her fur was matted, dirty and full of fleas... in short, she appeared road hard and put away wet. She was truly spent.

As I held the tiny pups, 8 wks old, I inquired about the vaccinations that Greenfield had POSTED they had. I was told they were not "yet" done as Ben hadn't gotten around to it yet (as per his sister). The pups were dirty, seemed to have fleas, and were way too skinny for young pups, yet happy - undoubtedly to be running around. I heard barking in the background. Inquiring about it, I was told they had "other puppies in the barn, that weren't READY yet, but that she'd bring them out," if I wanted to see them (she wasn't about to let me in to see the kennel in the barn). They were 5 weeks old, my guess. They were the reason a small 5 foot chicken wire circle fence was in the yard.

The young Amish boy, who couldn't have been more than 6, was absolutely filthy. He waved goodbye as we left, a blank expression on his face, holding a puppy in each arm. I wanted to cry. I thought about asking one of the sister if I could adopt HIM! Being pretty confident that HE wasn't vaccinated either, and was being used as nothing more than a ploy in a horrible game of puppy farming. Having witnessed first-hand, and in an effort to TEACH my daughter, although cute and adorable, it is simply IMMORAL to support the promotion of puppy mills.

I purchased 2 Rottweiler puppies, brother and sister from an Amish guy name Ben and asked to his face any problems with hip dysplasia. I was told no, absolutely not - we give a guarantee. Well I know nothing about big dogs so after seeing mom and puppies we took them. 3 hour drive back home... Well we took them for our vet check. Mind you they are only 3 months old when we get them so our vet says everything seems fine but too young to tell anything. At 4 months old we get both of them fixed all their shots, etc... A lot of money later, then we start to notice the girl is getting around a little more difficult. Long story short, we take her in and vet says she could have played rough before we spend a lot of money taking x-rays - let’s wait a month to see how she is before we even think it is the hips especially since you were told no way by breeder either pup could get it...

Well guess what? Spent a lot more money, had x-rays and she not only has hip dysplasia in both hips but vet said it is severe! We took her to Specialist Hospital in Red Bank and she is in need of a surgery on both hips from a cost of $4,000 all the way up to $12,000!!! WTH. I called breeder again and you will never guess. He called Greenfield puppies where he lists his puppies for sale and there is only 30 day guarantee! My vet said you would have NEVER SEEN or thought of hip dysplasia the first 30 days... After doing some investigating there are a lot of shady things going on and I think we are going to have to do something. We do not or never thought about spending that kind of money! No Mrs. Sanders, this should not happen to a pup that age, unfortunately it sometimes does, as I have lived through myself. Epilepsy is a horrid condition that I myself lost a Min Pin to 3 years ago. She was treated effectively for several years and in the end she lost her fight with the disease. I purchased her from a breeder who is widely known to be reputable in our area, but she still became ill with this terrible sickness at the age of 2 years old. Can epilepsy be genetic, it can be, but it also in some cases is not from what I was told by my vet. I am very sorry for the loss of your girl, and would like to have a conversation about the breeder you purchased her from. I look forward to hearing from you!

I purchased Dozer, an ACA registered boxer puppy from Abram in Gap PA on October 28, 2012. I paid $550 for the love of my life. He was a great puppy. Learned to ring a bell on the door to go out by 4 months and would sit, high five, speak and lay down by 5 months. He did very well in puppy school even though he thought he was there to play. Things suddenly went downhill at 5 1/2 months. He could no longer move his head and it took a long time to lie down. We took him to the vet who started him on Prednisone and pain killers. He did not get any better and the vet recommended to take him to Metropolitan Animal Hospital in Norristown.

They were fantastic. My beautiful puppy had to have a spinal tap because they thought it was spinal meningitis. We were told that Boxers, Pugs and Per Mountain dogs are prone to spinal meningitis. I called the breeder to let him know what was going on with Dozer. I had left a message and he called me back that day. All he did was say he was sorry but there was nothing he could do. Dozer was put on Prednisone from March to July 2013. Things went great for 10 days after the Prednisone was completed in July. Then it came roaring back. Again we took him to Metropolitan Animal Hospital and they confirmed that it had come back.

This time they increase the Prednisone and added Azathioprine. He was ok for a few days then he developed an abyss on his throat the size of a softball. The vet did a needle biopsy to determine that is was only an abyss. Then she had to lance it to get it to drain. I continued to put warm compresses on it to help it to continue to drain. But he continued to go downhill. Late one Saturday night, I tried to get him up to go out but he could not stand on his own. After helping him up, he walked like he was 90 instead of 10 months. This was the last time he stood on his own. Sunday morning, I called the vet again and we took him right in.

After talking to the vet, we decided to put him down because we had tried everything. It was the worst decision I had to make but the best decision for Dozer. He had no quality of life. I called the breeder to let him know that I had to put Dozer down. I had to leave a message. He NEVER returned my call. I then contacted Greenfield Puppies. I talked to Neil who was very sympathetic and assured me he would contact the breeder to find out if he had any information about the other puppy in the litter.

The breeder had told me that there were 6 puppies born but only 2 survived and they had to be bottle feed with goat milk because the mother’s milk did not come in. He also asked me to email him all of Dozer's vet bills which were well over $3,000. I was encouraged after this conversation. After a week, on Aug 24 I emailed Neil again to tell him I was very disappointed that I had not heard from him or the breeder. He returned my email and assured me that he would be contacting the breeder the next day. But as of this date, September 3rd (a day after what should have been Dozer's first birthday), I have not heard from Neil. Please do your homework before looking at Greenfield Puppies.

Judy, I remember in detail the situation that you are speaking of and we felt our part in this was resolved. In no way do we ever want to hear of a situation like this happening, but it is our job to make the breeder aware of what is happening with a puppy and allow the breeder to take the course they see as correct. In an extreme case, like the puppy being ill when purchased, we step in and make sure the customer is compensated. Are you aware that this disease is not necessarily hereditary? With no history of this infection being present in the parents of Dozer, it is unlikely it came from any wrongdoing on the breeders behalf. We are very disappointed that this happened to you and our heart goes out to anyone who loses a friend so young. Is there any way we can help remedy this situation?

In February 2011, we purchased an English Bulldog puppy we saw advertised on Greenfield Puppies. The picture was adorable. It continued to say in the ad he came from good bloodlines, blah, blah. Well, he did not. 2 yrs later, on Aug 4th of 2013, he dropped over dead. The vet believes it was a massive stroke or aneurysm. When we got to the place we bought him, the conditions were deplorable. The pups were in a barn, no heat (they turned the heat lamp on when we got there), sleeping in their own feces and urine, chewing on horseshoes, and were antisocial. And of course, it was an Amish farm. My instincts told me to go right back home, but my heart wouldnt let me.

If I would have had the money for the remaining puppy, I would have saved him too. The mother was in poor condition. And they were proud of the fact that she was 8 yrs old and that was her last litter of pups!! He was flee infested and reeked of horse feces. 6 months down the road, he developed very severe skin allergies. Food and environmental allergies. He had a very good life for those 2 yrs and was a great dog. But when you spend $2k on an English Bulldog and you are told his bloodlines are good, you just expect more than a 2-yr lifespan.

Greenfield can stick their 30-day guarantee. It takes longer than 30 days to see if something is wrong with a pup. And 99.9% of the breeders are Amish on this website. Just wish we researched a little better. This is like losing one of my kids. We are also in the process of reporting the breeder to the AKC. Everyone with an AKC registered dog, you can do that too. They will investigate the breeder. I live in Lancaster county and will never buy from Amish again. They are all sneaky puppy mills.

I recently purchased 2 beagle puppies from Benjamin ** in Christiana, PA 2 days ago. When I brought them home, they were scratching like crazy, and I thought it was because they were sleeping on hay in a pen outside. Well, they were taken to the vet today; they have ear mites, an inner ear infection, a deep skin infection, and scabies. I paid $800 for the two dogs and now two days later, I have already paid $700 in vet bills and more to come. I knew it wasn't the best conditions where they were sleeping (outside, in a pen, next to horses and a quail), but this is ridiculous.

I feel bad for the people who bought the other 3 puppies in the litter because they have to have the same thing. There was a boxer and a german shepherd running around, and they have a long barn on the other side of their property, which leads me to strongly believe this is a puppy mill. The breeder said the vet checked them; he was lying. Don't believe that these dogs are up to date on anything, as far as the vet goes. I've called green field puppies and the breeder and have not heard back yet.

In case you don't know what puppy mills are, they are terrible breeding facilities where dogs are denied adequate exercise, veterinary care, food, etc. The dogs are kept in filthy cages on top of each other and are forced to breed over and over again. All the puppy mill breeders care about is money. They make their money off the suffering and abuse of innocent animals! Wake up and look for yourself.

I really, really wanted to believe that Greenfield Puppies was not a puppy mill. I did some research and convinced myself that not all breeders on the site were puppy mills. My husband and I drove all the way from Virginia to Pennsylvania to meet a little Bichon Frise puppy on Weaverland Road in East Earl, PA. What a mistake it was...

Here is what we concluded from our afternoon of visiting the puppy:

When we first met the puppy, he was shaking so hard and was petrified of us. He was running around the room, but not to play - to escape the humans. The puppy lived in a building behind the house (where I tried to follow the breeder Mary to so I could see where he lived, but she shooed me away). I demanded to meet the mother and father, and was only allowed to meet the mother bichon. She was filthy - paws were yellow (I'm assuming from standing in her own feces) - and had no recognition of her name. She was also scared of the breeders and was also running around the house to get away from them.

I questioned if the puppy was potty trained. I was told that he would go potty in his "nest" and the droppings would fall to a tray underneath, which she would clean "a few times a week”, which basically meant that the puppies were living in wire cages and were living amongst their filth for days at a time. The "papers" that she presented to us were signed in her own handwriting. I asked her where the puppies had gotten their shots, and she claimed that she had done it herself. My husband questioned if she was a veterinarian, to which she admitted that she was not.

Their house was clean and the breeders were very nice people; however, it fit every description I have ever read regarding a puppy mill. We did not end up getting the dog, as adorable as he was, and as much as we wanted to save him from a terrible situation. However, we couldn't take the risk knowing what sort of environment he had grown up in.

Wish we hadn't driven all the way from Virginia to affirm every review we read online. Don't even bother taking a chance.

Deb, I believe you have us confused with another company. We are one of the only online based advertising companies that visits our breeders, takes our own photos, and we disqualify breeders that we feel are not treating their dogs or puppies the way they should. There are plenty of websites out there that don't make those distinctions, but I can assure you that we are not one of them. I will say this, Amish breeders have gotten a bad reputation over the years, but it is very discriminatory to assume that they are all puppy mills. I can tell you that some of the most knowledgeable breeders I know have been Amish, and they take very good care of the Dogs they breed. We talked to our vet who suggested we google the breeder's name to see if any complaints registered to that specific individual came up. There was nothing that came up about the individual. We then traveled to visit the puppy and spent 20 minutes playing and questioning the breeder. We walked to the kennel that the mother and pups were housed in and got to interact with the mother and all the puppies. After careful consideration, we brought home a beautiful boxer. She has been to see our vet twice and has a clean bill of health. No worms, no ear mites, no fleas, nothing but an obsession with chewing (natural for the breed and a puppy). I think it is important that you as a buyer do your homework. Interaction prior to the purchase is important. There is so much you can learn about an animal if you spend more than a few minutes looking at the cuteness.

I have had many dealings with the breeders listed on Greenfield over the years, for myself and for friends. For the most part, the breeders are local farmers, often Amish, and the dogs they are breeding are just their own farm dogs or pets. These are not show dogs, they do not come from champion stock, but the families that I have dealt with have all cared about their dogs.

As a buyer, you need to do your homework. Certain breeds are known to have certain genetic issues. Know what they are! If the pups are unclean, walk away! I have only had one problem, a pup that developed a very rare form of cancer and died before the age of 2. I told the breeder just to let him know (not to get anything in return) and he was very concerned and even gave me another puppy, unrelated to the first. This can happen in any bloodline though, and has nothing to do with Greenfield. Greenfield is merely a listing agent. If you want certainty and guarantees, do not invest in dogs. Perhaps some safe T-bills?

I purchased my Border Collie pup in Feb. 2012 from a breeder listed with Greenfield and I am very pleased. First, I have to tell you I am a professional dog handler (not a breeder) with 40 years experience and I am PA state licensed. The state has enacted laws to prevent the puppy mill activity of the past and I suggest you contact the state for PA dog law to read the laws. As a professional, AKC means nothing to me as I've seen multiple dogs over the years from so-called reputable breeders with many genetic health problems and many breeders (yes, even AKC) will still continue to breed despite that fact.

AKC is not a guarantee at all you will be buying a healthy puppy so, buyer beware. As I've owned herding breeds all my life, I wanted a farm raised Border Collie from working parents with a solid temperament and that is exactly what I got and why I went through Greenfield to get it. I had my pup DNA tested for MDR1 even though he would be neutered so I would be aware of any negative drug reactions that could occur in his life and he was negative which means his bloodline is also negative. The breeder offered paperwork to register my pup in the Border Collie Assn. which I declined. Both sire and dam were on the property owned by the breeder and working on the farm and the farm was immaculate and so were all the puppies.

I would definitely use Greenfield again and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a herding dog. Despite any breeder's best efforts, there is never 100% guarantee your puppy will be perfect in every way and if you are worried about how much a vet bill will cost you at some point in a dog's life, you shouldn't buy one. The cheapest thing you'll do is buy the puppy and after that it will cost thousands in a dog's lifetime for food, spaying/neutering, shots, toys, treats, boarding, any meds, treating any health issues, etc. Like humans, as dogs age, they do need more medical care to keep them healthy and if you are like me, you won't care what it costs to keep your buddies happy, healthy and with you as long as possible.

    Original Review: May 25, 2012

First, I want to say that I did get a puppy through a breeder who had listed on GFP. I had been recommended to the website by a friend who had two German shepherds. Their "no puppy mills guaranteed" statement put me at ease. As someone who had no experience with purebreds, I was unaware of many of the things you should look for in a breeder, but I did know a few things, such as to see the dog in person (never ever buy a puppy that's been shipped, no good breeder does that), demand to see the mother, to see where the dogs were kept, to make sure they were clean, well fed, and happy and active, and had shots and a real AKC registration. The breeder we met were Amish and were kind and had a clean house, clean well cared for dogs, and only had corgis on the premises (just one family and only one litter).

My dog is nearly two and is fine. The only health problem she has is a slight flea bite allergy and problems with the more grain-based dog foods (she gets a more expensive kind and has no problems). However, I have since learned things about the website itself that I cannot ignore. Though the people I met were clearly decent folks who took care of their dogs, they were not good breeders. I have since learned that a good breeder would pay for genetic testing to make sure the dogs had no genetic conditions and I have also learned that an AKC registration (much to my surprise) is no guarantee that you are dealing with a good breeder. So these people were not bad people, but they did not do everything that a good breeder would. So they really should not have been breeding their corgis.

The bottom line here is that I got insanely lucky and I'm counting my blessings. I didn't count entirely on luck, though. Once someone told me about the bad website's reputation, I immediately purchased health insurance for my dog that covered genetic conditions in case the worst happens later down the road. Since I have never trusted a breeder to do shots, that was not an issue as the day after I got my dog I took her to the vet to have them all redone just in case. I was also horrified to discover that many of the "breeders" are in fact puppy millers! They are scum posing as the breeders of the dogs! Do not be fooled by GFP's guarantee, it is meaningless. I just think I am lucky that I already knew to see my dog in person and to investigate the home and everything. Many people do not know these things, and so they are conned by puppy millers.

GFP should either be taken down or forced by the law to take a real banning approach to anyone that is suspected of puppy milling. While it is no doubt true that some of the breeders are decent folk like the ones I met, you just can't ignore that a lot of them aren't. I recently read an article about a couple of people who use the GFP that were arrested for horrible living conditions for their animals! If GFP really checked people out, then obviously that would not have happened.

Since then I have felt scared of what could have happened. There is no doubt that I lucked out; my friends have told me that this family was most likely something called "backyard breeders,” which means that they breed just a few pups and take good care of them, but don't understand what it means to be a good breeder and really make sure your buyers are good for the dogs. Another thing I learned is that a good breeder will give you like a year of health guarantee. Apparently, 30 days is nonsense - another lie by GFP to put people at ease with a false sense of security. So, I would recommend that anyone who wants a dog first call the ASPCA and ask them for website and phone number of the local club for the breed you want. At the time, I went looking for a dog and I did not know such things existed, but they do. They can help you find a local breeder with healthy dogs and you will never have to fear.

I would appreciate a response so we can collect the information on the breeders in question and make certain they are not placing ads on our site. We do a online background check for Kennel records for commercial breeders and a standard Google check for other breeders to avoid people with a history of mistreating animals. Also, when a breeder is local, we have a representative visit their location and photograph the puppies. They know the things to look for in terms of what is a bad breeder, and we do our best to protect folks like yourself from that.
