How does Embrace Pet Insurance work?

When you sign your pet up with Embrace, you can take them to any vet for the services they need. You are not required to use a vet within a specific network. Once your pet has been treated, you complete the claim form, submit it and are reimbursed for services and treatment covered under your plan.

There are different coverage levels to choose from, and you can downgrade or upgrade your policy at any time. When you insure your pet with Embrace, they are covered for life. Your coverage never drops based on your pet's age or health.

Cancer treatment, behavioral therapy and breed-specific conditions are covered, and the company reimburses you for vet exam fees. Dogs and cats under the age of 15 are eligible for full coverage, and pets older than this are eligible for accident-only coverage.

Embrace has a unique online resource that lists the most popular dog breeds and their most common breed-specific medical conditions. This can help pet owners choose the right coverage for their pets.

Embrace Wellness Rewards program

Embrace’s Wellness Rewards program, which can be added to your policy, reimburses you for preventative care. This includes wellness exams, microchipping, spaying/neutering, vaccinations and flea medication.

There are three annual allowance options for Wellness Rewards reimbursement:

  • $250 allowance per policy year
  • $450 allowance per policy year
  • $650 allowance per policy year

Embrace Pet Insurance coverage

Embrace is transparent about what policies do and do not cover. The company’s website lists the different coverage options and defines eligibility requirements and guidelines for preexisting conditions.

Accidents
Accident-only insurance is only available for pets 15 and older. This plan covers your pet if it ingests a foreign object, is cut or is hit by a car. This plan reimburses you up to $5,000 each year. You’ll pay a $100 deductible once a year, and then you're reimbursed 90% of your veterinary bills when your pet experiences an accident.
Illnesses
Embrace covers every illness from nose to tail with no precondition limitations. This means if your pet is prone to breed-specific illnesses, medical treatment is covered under your plan.
Dental issues
Dental pain can be very uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous for pets. Dental work on animals can also be very expensive. Embrace covers dental treatment for periodontal disease, gingivitis, root canals, crowns, oral masses and extractions. Up to $1,000 in dental work is covered per year.
Cancer and chronic conditions
Cancer coverage is included in all plans and includes everything from the consultation testing and radiation to chemotherapy, surgery, hospitalization and rehabilitation. Cancer treatments are one of the most expensive medical treatments for pet owners, and chemotherapy can run $150 to $600 a dose. Cancer coverage means you can give your pet a fighting chance without worrying about how you’re going to afford it.

Embrace Pet Insurance also covers a wide range of treatments including:

  • Alternative therapies and rehabilitation
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Specialist care
  • Emergency veterinary care
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Hospitalization and surgery
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Prosthetics and mobility devices

Conditions not covered

The list of what Embrace does not cover is shorter than the list of what it does cover. Basically, Embrace covers treatment and services that are crucial to the health and well-being of your pet, but not cosmetic services, breeding, whelping or preexisting conditions.

How much does Embrace Pet Insurance cost?

Dog insurance costs average around $30 to $40 per month, and cat insurance averages around $15 to $20 per month. Embrace has a one-time enrollment fee of $25 and a $1 monthly processing fee for those who pay monthly.

Embrace lets you customize your plan, so you can choose the deductible, the reimbursement percentage, any riders or optional coverage add-ons and annual maximums. You know your pet and your budget, and Embrace has coverage options to fit them both.

I cannot say enough good things about Embrace Pet Insurance. My Pomeranian, Koda Bear, was insured with them for years, and they were consistently compassionate, responsive, and fair throughout some of the hardest moments of my life as a pet owner. They handled claims smoothly during a hemorrhagic gastroenteritis episode Koda had in January 2024, and again when he was diagnosed with mitral valve heart disease in mid-2025. Even as his condition progressed, Embrace continued paying claims without giving me a hard time or making the process stressful. That meant everything while trying to focus on caring for him.

Before making decisions about treatment, I had done extensive research and even learned through Embrace’s annual report that they had paid over $50,000 for open-heart surgery at the University of Florida for another dog with mitral valve disease. Knowing they truly stood behind policyholders gave me confidence and peace of mind. Sadly, Koda passed away unexpectedly, but even then, when I called to cancel the policy, the representative I spoke with was incredibly kind and compassionate. That level of humanity is something I will never forget. Once I’m ready to welcome another dog into my life, I absolutely plan to insure with Embrace again. I highly recommend them to my friends, family, and anyone looking for pet insurance that actually shows up for you when it matters most.

During my conversation today with a gentleman named Clay representing the company embrace for customer service, I was able to find out in a professional, succinct and helpful manner everything that I had asked. What was most unusual is the degree to which I felt that this man actually cared about what he was telling me which I find highly unusual in customer service today if I can even understand what they’re saying from another country representing people in the United States, who wish to talk to someone who can meet their needs.

He is a highly gifted communicator and articulated the mission with clarity and a steadfast commitment to the highest level of performance, and I have never talked to this guy before today, but he was excellent and deserves to either be running customer service or paid significantly for the skillful and helpful, rare qualities that he possesses.

I was so upset after Nationwide canceled my precious Duchess’s after 5 years and they tried to get me to take THEIR lesser company with less coverage and higher premiums, so I tried Met Life. They were so rude and certainly for almost $200 a month I expected them to be better, They insisted I give them 2 1/2 years back full Vet records and insisted I go back to my vet and tell her to change and list specifics. They wouldn’t accept her annual exam and notes. I cancelled them immediately. They never paid anything after almost $400 in premiums and said I had 10 days to resubmit so I was worried and got Spot. They were ok. I had them less than 24 hours. Finally called my Vet and they recommended Embrace and with Tiffany’s help I am relieved and feel blessed. Thank you Tiffany.

Overall, my experience with Embrace Pet Insurance ended up being a very positive one, and I want to take a moment to recognize the call center customer service team. In my experience, the financial side that communicates through email can sometimes take longer to resolve issues. It can turn into a back-and-forth where emails are exchanged for a while without much progress unless you call. That’s where the phone representatives really shine. Personally, while my claim did take several months to resolve, every customer service representative I spoke with over the phone was kind, patient, and professional. They always treated me with respect and made a real effort to help, which I truly appreciated during what was a stressful situation.

I especially want to give a big thank you to Britney, who carefully reviewed my case and followed through until the payment was finally processed. Her professionalism, calming tone, and genuine commitment to helping made a huge difference. It’s clear that Embrace values customer care, and representatives like Britney reflect that. Good customer service can completely change an experience, and the team showed kindness and dedication throughout the process. Thank you again to the Embrace team for your support and professionalism.

My senior dog was initially diagnosed with hip dysplasia. That is frequently a misdiagnosis for IVDD. After eventually determining that was likely the cause he needed an MRI to confirm. I live in Iowa and there was only one place this was available-Iowa State Veterinary. During that time they closed during COVID. I called any AAHA hospital in the Midwest with an MRI and after days finally found one. Miraculously they said they could do it the next day. Embrace issued an urgent prior authorization while I coordinated my travel and it was done in time.

The only negative I have experienced is that a payment date is set when the policy is set up. They do not allow you to change that payment date (which is beneficial if you change jobs). At this time you aren’t allowed to change even once. I can change the payment date with my mortgage and car insurance so it seems reasonable to do this for my pet insurance as well.

This is singlehandedly the worst insurance I've ever had the displeasure of being subscribed to. Didn't get a single cent back from the "completed" claims. I had to pay $2k+ for my kitten's Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) within the last MONTH and had Embrace weeks before the visits AND the diagnosis. The tests, bloodwork, visits, compound medicine, they all added up to $2,000. I paid $125~ for Embrace membership (2 months) and they could only refund a measly $9. I cannot stress this enough... I'd rather pay $2,000 out of pocket five times every month than to have to pay $50 a month to Embrace ever again.

Also their customer service is bad. I kid you not, within the same day, I waited for 20 mins for the first call, and 30 mins ON THE DOT for the other call. I was this close to hanging up. And they have the audacity to have a voice line in the hold-call that says they're rated top customer service by some company. That's real funny. Save your money, mental health, time, and your pet's time. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR EMBRACE PET INSURANCE. Actual thieves.

      Hello Zey,

We are sorry to hear that your experience with our company has not met your expectations. We do strive to be as upfront as possible about the coverage regarding the exclusion of pre-existing conditions, which is anything noted as symptomatic or diagnosed prior to the start of the policy and through the initial waiting or exclusionary periods. Since the condition occurred during the 14-day illness waiting period, we were unable to provide coverage for the claims. We understand this was not the outcome you were expecting and you've spoken with a team member regarding your concerns, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out and we're happy to assist as we are able.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with this company. Despite filing zero claims, my premiums have increased dramatically each year, apparently due to my pet’s age and the tenure of my policy. When I asked about options, I was told I could reduce my coverage to lower the premium. However, I was also told that if I ever wanted to increase the coverage again, my pet would have to go through another health history review. Any conditions that developed since the prior review could then be considered pre-existing and excluded from coverage. In practice, this makes it very difficult to reduce coverage without risking the loss of future protection, which leaves customers feeling trapped in increasingly expensive policies.

Rather than rewarding loyal customers, it feels as though long-term policyholders are being penalized with excessive premium hikes. My policy increased by approximately 45% after the first year, then 72% the following year, and another 108% this year. In total, my premium has increased by approximately 418% over three years.

I have never experienced this level of year-over-year increase with any other bill or service. When I contacted the company to discuss the issue, I was given only generic explanations. They also refused to confirm whether they had filed a rate increase with the appropriate state regulatory board. Based on my experience, I would caution other pet owners to carefully review the long-term affordability of this coverage before purchasing a policy.

Once your pet reaches a certain age or develops any health conditions, switching insurers may become extremely difficult because new policies often exclude pre-existing conditions. That can leave customers stuck choosing between unaffordable premium increases or losing coverage for conditions already covered under the existing policy. I wish I had understood this risk more clearly before enrolling. Prospective customers should look very carefully at how premiums may increase over time and what their options really are if the policy becomes unaffordable.

      Response from Embrace Pet Insurance

      Hello,

We understand that premium increases are challenging, and we truly regret any disappointment you've experienced with your renewal quote. We also want to assure you that any increases implemented are approved with all compliance standards within the state. We understand you've already spoken with a representative regarding your concerns, so this is likely not new information, but Embrace conducts an actuarial analysis each year, and it is these findings that help us to determine increases in premium pricing for all policies for the term ahead. Our renewal increases are based on multiple factors including the age of the insured pet(s), tenure of the pet(s) on the policy, and veterinary inflation. This includes not only rising veterinary costs but also the recent advances we are seeing in veterinary care. Over the lifetime with any pet insurance company you are likely to see very similar trends, it just may vary when the increase happens.

We strive to find a balance in maintaining quality coverage for the pets that we insure, while also factoring in changes in the marketplace, but the reality of the premiums is that they do go up over time as our pets get older to account for the increasing risk of illness and injury. Please know that you have options and our team is here to help you review your plan, explore ways to adjust your coverage, or find alternate coverage to keep a level of protection in place. We were unable to locate your account to view additional details, but if you would like to explore these options further please feel free to reach out to embracesocial@embracepetinsurance.com with your full name and policy number and we're happy to help.

I insured a 6 month puppy just over a week after adopting from a shelter. There is a waiting period for the insurance to start. The second day after the accident portion of the coverage began my puppy passed a bloody bundle of sticks and needed to be hospitalized. Embrace will not cover it as there was no specific incident in which he ate a stick (he was just crazy about eating everything after being in the shelter his whole life and it was a constant battle). I know all insurance companies make their money by denying claims but this company aligned itself with USAA and I expected the same level of quality and service. They are nothing like USAA...

      Hello Thor,

We appreciate you choosing Embrace for your puppy's health insurance needs and we are sincerely sorry to hear that your experience with our company has not met your expectations. We do strive to be as upfront as possible about the coverage regarding the exclusion of pre-existing conditions, which is anything noted as symptomatic or diagnosed prior to the start of the policy and through the initial waiting or exclusionary periods. Since this was an ongoing issue that started prior to the policy purchase, your claim did not meet the criteria of an accident per your policy's terms and conditions. However, any time you feel there was an incorrect assessment you do have the option to appeal. We see you've spoken with a team member who has provided additional information regarding this process. We understand this was not the outcome you were expecting, and if you have any other questions or would like further clarification, please feel free to reach out to the claims adjuster directly and they will be happy to assist you.

I have had 5 dogs over the last 30 years. 3 French bulldogs. Finally purchased a policy for my french puppy. He was diagnosed 11/20/25 with boas. He had been to the vet 5 times since 9/10/2024. Vet never mentioned boas. Told me thyroid or Addison's disease was causing regurgitation. Vet stuck boas in his file in 2024 without ultrasound or any imaging. Obviously to cover herself. Embrace denied every bill after that 2024 date as pre existing. I am stuck eating over 5k in bills and needing surgery that will cost 10k. It’s still typical insurance, pass the baton, point the finger and make it impossible to get a live person to appeal. Don’t waste any money if your breed has potential classic problems. Every french bulldogs can be diagnosed with stenotic nares or boas. Policy is a worthless piece of paper. Seeing my premiums are $1200 a year.
