I purchased (2) 6-foot dining tables from Buhler Furniture thru Etsy for $1530.00. Initially, communications with the seller were professional. When the order arrived, one table slightly slumping and the other table was perfect. I reached out to the seller to ask if the slumping table would get worse, we were disappointed but could live with it. He promised it would not get worse. 2 months later it's ridiculous, slumping, bowed table looks awful, much much worse. I reached out to the seller to replace the table and the seller stopped responding.
I reached out to Etsy to help with the seller and they gave the excuse that it was past the dispute time window even though the seller promised the table would not get worse and I had a written chat log for reference. I am so disappointed by the customer service, lack of ethics, professionalism and quality of product from this seller and Etsy. Etsy would not help me resolve the dispute with the seller. I used to love Etsy. This experience was very very negative.

First, it said the seller was located in California. But when I tracked the package it was coming from over seas. It would sit at one location for some days and now it's just made its way over to New York. She's in Baltimore. And of course the money came out of my account the day I ordered it. I will never ever order from Etsy again.

I purchased a dress from this seller. I received it and thought how the quality of the material was poor. I was asked to write a review, which I did. The seller was not happy. I thought when writing a review for Etsy (which I have done, numerous times) was about being honest. I was honest. I wasn't satisfied and I let the seller know this. Why then, can't the seller take my review and correct the situation? I asked for nothing, I just knew it would be my last order with the seller. I asked them to stop with the e mails, I wasn't interested in their daughter wearing the dress. I gave my review and I thought that would be it. My idea of quality and the seller's idea are not anywhere near close. If I wanted a dress with the quality of Wal-Mart, I would of went to Wal-Mart.

Poor customer service and I would rather purchase from Amazon a reputable company that values customer service.

Etsy started as a venue for handmade goods, vintage items and supplies. A Million or so sellers sold on the site just a few years ago. Then Etsy got greedy and let all sorts of sellers sell preparing for the big IPO. Even though Etsy was contacted several times about sellers that did not meet the requirements by other Etsy sellers. You have to remember the average age of an Etsy employee is 25?? They do not have real stores and virtually know nothing about what they are administrating. That is no excuse though. They should read the FTC laws on labeling. Buyers receive "handmade goods" that the seller forgot to take of the Made in China labels. Do they shut down these stores? No. They are making money for them. However, they shut down other true handmade stores without any warning? What business does this?
There are now $28+ sellers on Etsy. Everyone suddenly began making handmade goods. I think not. I find incredulous that Consumer Affairs has not reported Etsy to the FTC for items that violate the law. Etsy allow these items with many complaints and does not do anything. By willing condoning this, they are violating the law. Many sellers on Etsy utterly helpless. Stop complaining to Etsy. They will just shut down your shop because you didn't say something nice. Go straight to the FTC and file a report.
P.S. Really Etsy? When did you get to decide what was libel and inflammatory? You don't even have a basic understanding of the laws of what is real and handmade? Most of you have never made or sold anything. Sellers cannot even rate the buyers, so unscrupulous buyers can really work this system. Just be really careful. Don't get lost in the overwhelming goods for sale, try something else.

I was informed earlier this week that it was shipping later that day, being that it was so close to Mother's Day I inquired about paying extra to expedite the product, in hope of having it prior to the Mother's Day. Not only did I not receive a reply, but the product, as we speak, has not shipped either. Feeling like there was something wrong, I checked the status of my order and still nothing. I decide to look at reviews about Etsy, only to find disappointment! I ordered a ceramic dolls head from ** & ** of Caveman Designs on Etsy, paid $15.95 for product and shipping, but only received a broken product and refusal by the seller ** to refund my money. He said I needed to file a claim with the post office and he was not refunding my money for shipping. The post office said he needs to file the claim since he mailed it but they also asked about the condition of the broken product. They asked if I stacked it like that (see images) but upon informing them I have not touched a single piece, only opened the bubble wrap to take a picture, they immediately suspected foul play, saying they have never seen anything broken in shipment arrive so neatly and tidily stacked together, especially with three, yes three, layers of large bubble wrap. I have never seen this either. Seller still refused to refund my money.
I filed a complaint on Etsy and the seller remained ever so calm, as though he had been through this many times before. The complaint escalated to the "upper division" folks who promptly replied they would not do anything and I should file a claim with the post office because it is not the seller’s doing. They completely ignored the fact that the post office said ** of Caveman Designs had to file a claim, NOT ME, and further complaints got me answers like a broken record, repeating over and over and over that I need to file a claim, Etsy holds no issue with the seller, regardless of how the item arrives, and I need to file a claim. Etsy then had the nerve to tell me not to repeat anything they say to me to the general public or anywhere else. They are condoning the lying, thieving, cheating ways of the seller and told me "too bad!"
So, I found the names and contact information of the "Executive Team:" Chad Dickerson, Kristina Salen, Kellan Elliot-McCrea, Jordon Breslow, Mike Grishaver, John Allspaw, and Heather Jassy, as well as the Board of Directors and a few of the investors, as well as the Board of Directors and a few of the investors, and I am going to write them as many emails, letters and phone calls as I can possibly accomplish for all eternity if necessary, until I get my money back. Yes, it is only $16, but it is the responsible and judicial thing to do to make them all pay for either cheating me or allowing their seller to cheat me.
Know this Etsy and ** and ** of Caveman Designs, there will never, ever, be a day when I will stop other than the day I receive my refund, in full, including the shipping costs. I will be all over the internet, starting forums, posting everywhere I can possibly post, as well as file a small claims suit against the caveman and Etsy in Lexington, IL, and California. Etsy and ** of Caveman Designs are thieves. They lie, steal, cheat, cover-up, defraud, and are altogether corrupt.

On 9/18/14 I ordered a few leather wrap bracelets from Asai Bolivien. The money was extracted that day but a week later I received a message that she was on an extended vacation. Fast forward to January 18, 2015 - I get a message stating that my order has been shipped via registered mail (ergo, no tracking number). Well, today is 4/21/14 and still no package. Etsy is COMPLETELY unhelpful stating that they are not responsible and to contact PayPal for my refund. PayPal does not provide refunds following the completed transaction so I am left with nothing more than a bad experience.
The way I see it is Etsy is set up to assist thieves in stealing money. Since you only have 5 or 10 business days to file a complaint (based on country of origin) and only a small window of opportunity to leave a negative review, it’s impossible to get any assistance in instances where the seller simply doesn't ship your items. I consider myself lucky that I'm only out a small amount ($40 USD) as I've read some complaints where the loss was much higher. However, its completely unfair to hold the buyer responsible with absolutely no recourse when the buyer has been scammed.

A big thumbs-up to the Etsy integrity team, for pulling down genuine artisans and promoting blatant violators. Here is a sample: This search: ** Yields these listings, among others: **. All from different stores, with the EXACT SAME SNAP, nearly the same descriptions and prices. Did all of them have a simultaneous big bang burst of creativity and use their "creative designs" individually to come out with the same snaps and products? In ETSY's own words, this is prohibited- Reselling an item you weren't involved in designing or creating is prohibited in our Handmade category.
Handmade?? These are screen printed machine made bedsheets. One can order 30-40 pieces of these "handmade" creations from these stores at any time. This is just one example- there are countless such simultaneous bursts of creativity at these stores. Nor is this an exhaustive list of stores that are most probably controlled by one person.
Here is an extract from Labhanshi, another of "authentic handmade artisans". "All of the designs are our own and I have two great helpers that help me stitch. The quilts that you see are made up of vintage saris and painstakingly stitched by some women who live in rural areas. This work provides the livelihood for several families. The stitches used are small and delicate Kantha stitches which hold together several layers of fabric" So TWO people come up with 455 items of multiple pieces each?? And quilts stitched by "some women who live in rural areas" doesn't construe reselling? In ETSY's own words, this is prohibited: "Representing other artists, artisans, or creators (even if you're authorized to sell on their behalf)." And this is gross misrepresentation of the size of his operations. Also, these quilts are CHEAP IMITATIONS of kantha stitch, which is essentially from Bengal and not Jaipur, as claimed.
This listing is called "vintage": **. Really?? These are two-three year old sarees that are combined to make quilts! This listing clearly states that these items are resold after procuring from FAIR TRADE organizations: **. In ETSY's own words, this is prohibited: "Selling on behalf of charity or fair trade organizations".
This shop is heights...the owner calls himself Bhishma Pitamah, which is a mythological character from the Mahabharata and not even a real name! He doesn't even have his snap or anything verifying his authenticity as a seller....
This is just the beginning. Congrats on your IPO. I guess your new shareholders would be very interested in how Etsy has varied policies for different people, depending on how much commission they manage to rake up.

For a little time I have been selling on Etsy, but a recent ordeal wake me up and tell me I need to explore other possibilities. I'm a man so I don't ** but just feel my need to express, so if you are reading this thanks for reading. :) Long story short, I am a jewelry designer with a newly established business and selling my product via e-commerce platforms like ETSY. Some time ago I receive a custom order request, simple enough it is from one of my existing design just make in another material. I accepted and received the payment; purchase material, off to the studio then shipping, same old procedure and after I check the shipping status seeing the client received the order, I thought to myself "ok job well done". Now looking back how naive I was.
Few days after the item is receive by the client, I got a message from her saying that she is unhappy with the quality of the product, with few blurry shots of my product and few points she claim the product is defective. I wasn't sure what to made out of this and have my doubt (since I made and packed the product myself), but as a goodwill to clients I offered a fix upon return, and eventually a practical refund. All are decline by the client as she clearly state a full refund (with the item return to me) is the only way out. I cannot accept because product is tailor-made, I have to cover all material cost and labor if I fully refund the product.
Just imagine you go tailor-made a suit, all it paid for and suit is made, then you want to return the suit for full refund?! How ridiculous. My bottom line is a partial refund not because I agreed with client's claims, but simply as a gesture of good will to all customers and I believe this to be fair for my cost. All my proposal are decline and hence we open a case in ETSY from settlement.
I was faithful that ETSY would judge the case in my favor. Since I thought these are ridiculous claims in the first place, and the same case is open with PayPal and judged in my favor. I believe my argument is strong and valid: (1) the blurry photo hardly depicts my item well, if you are simply zooming on something (without seeing a whole picture) and claim as fault, you WILL found something even with a museum quality piece; (2) the order is tailor made so I simply cannot accept full refund due to my material and labor cost. I wasn't troubled by this case much at this point, oh boy was I wrong.
One day waking up and checking my account, ETSY admin determine my item being "significantly different than the product client received", without addressing to any of my augments, states that I need to provide a shipping address for the client to return the product. If I do not do so they will deactivate my shop. I emailed and called ETSY support and all I got was "if the case is determined there is nothing I can do for you". I didn't provide a shipping address (because if I did is like admit my item is defective), instead I asked the client to settle with PayPal first before I provide the shipping address, AND BOOM! My shop is shut down by ETSY admin without any further comment, just because I didn't provide ETSY the answer they want.
Since I can't sell with my shop closed, I ask for ETSY admin to active my shop again. They say ok, but only if you provide the shipping address and after everything are settled. So now because I want my shop back, I am being forced to admit to what I disagree, and at ETSY's end they don't even need to answer any of my argument. Being overpowered and unjustly doing an act without conscience, I wish I can say something but can't find my words. In one of the conversation, an ETSY admin even admit that she didn't read all the conversation and missed a very important point. But since now it's all determined all are done. More importantly even if I made my solid argument ETSY can simply ignore.
Until now my ETSY shop remains closed. If all "goes well" I will be will selling again in another month. During the course of this case I learned about my client's purchasing record and guess what, she is an expert and often open these refund cases. What I learned: (1) Don't rely on one single platform (the old say "don't put all egg in one basket"); (2) Don't be naive and stay defensive. My act of good will being interpret by the buyer as "if there is nothing wrong in the product then why would you offer a particle refund in the first place"; (3) In the economy world there is no right & wrong, simply strong vs. weak.
Final thoughts: Only large companies have the huge and fast overturn rate for super attractive policies (ie. 60 days no-question-asked refund). Small independent business simply don't have such capacity. As a consumer, you are entitled to exercise your rights to the limit. But don't blame about the world is overtaken by big companies; don't compliant you lose your freedom of choice, and don't say mega-corporations are evil controlling every aspect of your life. Making unreasonable demands can kill tiny independent business in an instant, a contribution to businesses monopolized by big players. Great majority of my clients are very happy with my product and I do have faith in humanity, my heart tells me don't go all jaded up. This is a live and learn for me. Again thanks for reading, I hope a case study would help other sellers, as many post I read provide me information I never knew before.

Instead I received an under-filled pillow that was filled with the cheapest most lightweight poly fill you can get. The finishing seam was all crooked and full of loops that if you cut would unravel the whole thing. The 2 fabric-covered boxes wobble due to one leg being too short and the cardboard is bent in a few places. I offered to accept a 50% refund from the seller because I like the colors and could repair all the items. The seller turned out to be a real nut job. She was all over the place. She agreed to the partial refund, then she acted like she didn't know how to make a refund. Then she acted like she didn't know my email address. Then she acted like my email address wasn't correct, it went on and on. Clearly she was stalling.
So I wrote 3 honest reviews, including photos, and posted them on Etsy.com. She had Etsy take them down! So no wonder I keep getting ripped off on that site. All the reviews that would warn a customer about a seller are never posted. Etsy is colluding with an unscrupulous seller to steal money from an innocent buyer. As a matter of protocol! I have been a loyal member of the Etsy community since 2010. I buy from people there all the time, belonged to several awesome groups, made a lot of friends and have my own shop. In all this time I have never had a single problem with Etsy. I absolutely loved being a member of this community until the day I actually had a problem and they refused to help me. Last year around summer time I was heavily trying to promote my newly reopened shop and had set up ad campaigns. I kept them on until about early-mid fall. I closed them because they didn't seem to be helping and I made no sales because of them. Well, I don't know how this happened but without my knowledge or consent, the ads started running again all of a sudden, accruing ridiculous amounts of fees which I had not budgeted for nor expected because I didn't know the ad campaign was on because I did not authorize it to run again.
I have not listed anything on etsy since Valentine’s day yet all of a sudden I owe a ridiculous amount of money for doing nothing. When I checked my statement details it said I was being charged for ads! I was shocked! I did not authorize this and contacted them immediately. Basically, they are telling me this is my fault that I am the one that did this and they cannot violate their advertising policy by removing these fees for me. Yeah, I'm upset. I don't understand why an organization won't stand behind and support their loyal customer of 5 years and actually help them when something crazy happens to their account.
I am very upset about this because I love Etsy but I cannot and will not support an organization that does not care about me as much as I care about them. I was building a following and an artsy family and now all of that is gone, simply because they cannot help me when suspicious activity occurred on my account. They just blame me and this makes me very upset, mad, angry and sad all at once.

In 2014, there are 1.4 million sellers on etsy share 2 billion dollars per annual sales. On average, it is less than 2000 dollars per seller. Small artisan with decent sales have been constantly reported by many other unsuccessful sellers. And some of them got shut. Some people are laughing. But overall speaking. It will be hard for any small sellers to get decent sales on Etsy. The large sellers (especially US based ones) are selling 10s of thousands each year. Anyway more decent handmade sellers will be shut. And more factories handmade sellers will roll out more stuff here.
They are 2 identical US sellers sell just over 6000 pieces of printed t-shirts per day on etsy over Christmas 2014. Surely print a t-shirt by using machines are not handmade. Etsy won’t care. Cause all they care is to get more profit. I think the worst thing etsy has done is shut your account after a few months or after a few years.
I think they should verify every seller before they even allow them to sell on etsy. Not to wait till sell has already invest thousands of dollars. Some borrows money to set up etsy business only got shut when they finally start to make money. But of course Etsy won’t waste their time to verify each seller before allowing them to sell on their site. It waste time and Money. It is much easier just to kill your account at any time they want. By the way. Not handmade is not the only reason they use to close your account.
Other reasons include: Inconsistency shows in your account activity. Wrongly present your identity or location or size of your business. Pictures you used are not allowed. Buyer opened a case against you. Even your products have been copied by factories on Alibaba can cause your shop to be shut. Cause no one knows if you are reselling or they are copying you. It is PURELY depend the representative in Etsy integrity team to decide. Etsy is looking for IPO now. I bet they will exist for year to come. However, I don’t believe they will be anything better than any other independent brands or there will be better custom/handmade site/s rises. I hope the next one will be someone cares about small businesses. Goodbye Etsy.

I do not understand why one company can work with manufacturers, another can sell wholesale, some can buy all their products that they sell, and others have to sell only handmade. Etsy shops are not handmade, 85% or more is purchased. Some companies are allowed to sell leather baby moccasins while another is not allowed. I think the double standards are very Wrong. Sent two champagne bottle to be flattened into dishes. I was told that the items were shipped in February 2015; I was provided a shipping tracking number only after a few conversations. Contacted the post office and was told the tracking number was created by a computer NOT the post office - it was the seller personally dropped them off at the PO. After questioning the seller, she was abrupt and told me she didn't have time to repeat herself and would contact when there was movement. When I contacted her again to file a complaint with the PO as she said she insured them for $50; she told me to take it up with the PO; I did and it was discovered she never sent the package. This seller is a scam - she sucks you into sending her bottles and then she keeps them for her own or her shop to sell. I went to my account with Etsy to check on the shipment of my last purchase last month. I couldn't get into my account. I clicked on a link to contact them. Finally 5 days later someone gets back in touch with me with a vague explanation of my account closed. I replied back and when they replied to that message, they told me that I was in contact with some sellers that their accounts were closed also. So now that surprises me. If I had purchased from a business from there that was closed, why would they close other accounts from buying or even selling to others. And I never had any issues with anyone, both as a seller or buyer from their site, and those I purchased from, all gave me good feedback as well as bought any of my items.

NO HELP AT ALL. You cannot be a business owner or be successful with this site if all they do is close real handmade shops and keep the mass product shops up. The Etsy admins have the power over artisans that have a shop on the site. They promote about becoming entrepreneurs and building your own business. But how can any of us do that if there is no help?
You can go to the office in Brooklyn and they will lie to you and tell you they can't help you there when you SEE the admins walking in.

Etsy also suspended my shop about 1 year ago. I sell hats and I customize the brims. Had a solid customer base and perfect feedback from all my repeat customers. I always shipped the same or next day and never had an issue... It was the worst possible timing because I had just moved out on my own and needed all the income I could get. To re-open the shop, they asked for a bunch of things to be done. I did everything they asked, put the story of how I got into the business, provided step-by-step instructions with pictures of how I customize the hats but the integrity team said it was not enough.
I don't think it matters how much proof I gave. Once they close you down, you're done for good... I tried reopening under different names and emails but they caught me because of the same social and bank account I guess. THE ETSY SUPPORT TEAM DO NOT WANT TO HELP YOU OUT. I purchased a set of prints from a shop on Etsy, Adam's Ale Prints. There was a delay in shipping, and the owner, **, told me that she would be sending my prints shortly and then marked them as shipped in Etsy's system. When they had not arrived in the time frame she had stated, I contacted her and asked her for an update and the tracking number. While she evaded the question, it was clear that the prints had not been shipped as she stated. Instead of answering my simple question, she instead listed a barrage of excuses and no apology. I told her her response was unprofessional. She then apologized, and asked if it would be okay if she refunded my money and sent me the prints as a gesture of good will. I said fine, as I had already ordered expensive custom frames for the prints and would have to pay to send them back and had already paid heavy shipping on them.
She provided tracking information to me for these prints several times, and when the container arrived, it was empty - save for a vile and hateful letter, attached here. I contacted Etsy since she had accessed my home address through their system, and they said that while she violated their privacy policy, they couldn't do anything more than make a note in her file and advised me to contact the proper authorities to end her harassment. I filed a complaint with the Oregon Consumer Protection division of the DoJ, and when she was reached by the case officer to respond to the complaint, once again accessed my personal information on Etsy and began sending me threatening emails.
She was given my maiden name through the complaint process, and used it to try and intimidate me by referencing a very serious car accident I was in, which had zero relevance to her malicious sales practices. She sent me several more emails, and copied me on a rambling response to the case officer saying she was scared I had found out where she really lived (she sent her package from a different address and her real city is listed on her public Etsy shop page) and saying I was trying to get money from her (my complaint only said I had paid for the custom frames that I was able to use later by purchasing from a much nicer seller) and referencing the car accident I was in and saying my injuries didn't deserve the settlement I received - again completely out of touch with reality, not to mention completely classless.
I contacted Etsy to let them know that this harassment, made possible through her access to my personal information on their site, was escalating. They again said they would make a note in her file. Having read several reviews of Etsy, it's clear they shut down shops for much smaller infractions on a regular basis. The fact that this woman has, by Etsy's own admission, violated their privacy policies and harassing me should unquestionably be grounds to shut down her shop. Since it seems she does a high volume of sales on Etsy, I think it's clear that their lack of action against her has everything to do with protecting their bottom line and not their customers.

I signed up Etsy's listings promotion, wherein you pay a fee for Etsy to list the products of your store. While Etsy said I had 200+ views and so many impressions in the last 30 days, I received no business, no interest, no conversations from other consumers. Therefore, I cannot say whether or not these 200+ views and impressions are valid or if in fact, Etsy's own members are trolling these pages and clicking on everyone's profile just to rack up the fees.
Needless to say, my account has been suspended because they want $156.00 in promotion fees from my store. I have never paid more than $20-$25.00 in a month for promotion of my products before. I did notice, however, that when I signed up with Etsy the second time around, I got more views more quickly this time. But again, no purchases, no business, no interest at all. I have attached all of these charts and spreadsheets Etsy has generated. As you can see, before January-December, I hardly spent anything for advertising. Now they want 10x as much for advertising? So, it's been a week since I reported a review left by a crazy upset customer that has the f and b word in it and I've sent 3 emails with no response. It's kind of weird to me that the customer support has time to sit around and search for things like "forever 21" and "mossimo" to make store owners take listings down (without bothering to shut down the stores that make thousands of dollars a month making nothing themselves by just buying pre-made accessories wholesale from aliexpress and eBay and running stores that actually hand make anything out of business.)
But I mean, they make so much money off of them why would they want to do that, right? It's not about the principles the site was founded on or about people getting products that have any quality at all, it's all about making even more millions of dollars at everyone else's expense. So good job, you all seriously have the saddest excuse for customer service from any site I've ever encountered.

Who can design a custom logo and produce 4 samples in 12 hours?!? I of course I didn't receive a sample in 12 hours but I gave her some time because I wanted quality work. 3 days later, I messaged her again to ask how the logo was coming along. I received a response that said she was working on it and that she had 4 people ahead of me. That's when I started to become uneasy, but she promised that she would have a sample soon.
5 days later I send a message asking if my logo was done yet?? No response. I messaged again 2 or 3 days later and I received an automatic email response that she had chicken pox and would return soon. The chicken pox must have killed her because I still haven't seen those samples. Etsy could care less. They finally sent me an email that the sellers shop was closed and wasn't able to sell on Etsy anymore.
Truth: Pixel Modern was closed before I even filed the complaint with Etsy. They didn't shut her down, she closed shop and moved on with a lot of people's money. Etsy basically said that the seller doesn't want to resolve the matter so they pretty much opened and closed my complaint without even attempting to help the situation at ALL. Etsy no longer gives small crafters a means to spring board their home based business.... Unless your home based business entails buying manufactured products overseas, employing 15 people to slap a tag or ribbon on it and market it as handmade.
Etsy as a whole has quickly become a dirty word among the handmade community. It's a game of algorithms, lies, and bait and switch. Etsy only continues to draw in new shops because of it's ability to dominate Google searches. Overall Etsy has gone the way of eBay and has become a mockery of itself and alienated not only its customers (the vendors) but its roots.

As a seller, I spent a lot of time setting up my store, making sure my pics looked good, getting business cards with my branding and etsy shop, linking all my social media etc. I make handmade items and they take weeks to make so everywhere in my shop it explains that the items are handmade and how long they take. I posted this in my shop description, in my shipping information, in the ad body, in the reply emails and in the reply comments. I still struggled when my items were shared on a large website and I had an influx of orders. I went from a 2 week window to a 5 week window. I did everything I thought I was supposed to do and it still wasn't enough. I actually took time off my day job to try to catch up.
Etsy allows buyers to leave feedback before they ever receive the item so my feedback was destroyed when I couldn't keep up. And when I refunded buyers proactively because I knew my orders were taking WAY too long guess what - Etsy STILL let them leave feedback and oh my were some of them wicked. And no ability for me to post a rebuttal either...to state that items take x amount of days and buyer was not happy with time which is why my shop was given a 1 star rating... :( This actually destroyed my presence on Etsy. I had to delete my shop because all people saw was my three star rating on over 700 orders placed, instead of looking at the stats and seeing that I had an influx of 1 star ratings during a specific time frame, that severely damaged my account.
Etsy now also allows a 180 day RETURN POLICY ON ORDERS! Really. So someone can buy my item, use it, and they have 6 freaking months to return it to me and if I refuse? Too bad. Etsy takes the money from me per policy. They also hold your last pay for 3 months when you close your shop. I made a smart decision to deactivate my items first and let my shop sit stagnant for a few before deleting it so all my money was deposited. I have a friend who closed hers without knowing this policy and now Etsy has $2100 of her money and won't cough it up due to "policy" for three months. I'm just glad she had savings as Etsy was her cash cow.
Buyers are treated a bit better than we sellers. They do have the ability to file a complaint and deal with things through proper channels. Where Etsy fails many buyers is that they do not take into account many people are not used to buying online in such a fashion. I remember one woman didn't understand that ETSY processes the refund, so it takes more than the push of a button to get back the money...and instead she went all over Facebook and stated I'd lied about refunding her and stole her money. Sadly the refund was processed next day. And while I do not agree with her tactics, she was ill prepared for Etsy to begin with, so I can see why she really thought it was a simple as a button push... Unfortunately they've done a great job cornering the market on online selling so they have the most window shop to sale ratio I've seen on any of the social selling sites. Frankly, I'd rather go back to making little to no money as it was a hobby for me, than to deal with the headaches I have dealt with using Etsy...

She even accused me of ruining her livelihood when I opened up a case with Etsy. The reason for my return was item was not done as described on photos/website. After multiple conversations with KristinDangerDesigns, the final product which was customized was still far from what was described. To get hold of customer service at Etsy is almost impossible. Their intervention is time consumer and un-conducive. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM. Quality control is bad, customer service is even worse. And I would say better off with Amazon.

I have bought items quite a lot of times from etsy.com and have never had any problem with not receiving my goods or with getting a VAT & customs bill and handling charge as my items came into the UK. As a result I have started a shop on etsy.com but have yet to make a sale probably because so many people do worry that they may have a bad experience as most of the reviewers here have. My advice if you are unsure is before you purchase and if you don't see any reviews ask a question or two, see what sort of response you get, as conscientious sellers will respond promptly and helpfully or if there are lots of bad reviews be cautious, I myself have been caught out on MISI.com (a similar site to etsy.com) when making a purchase and I did get my money back eventually but I did have to jump through hoops to get it back even dealing with PayPal.
I do agree that these sort of sites seem to run on a shoestring budget when it comes to customer service which sucks if the seller you are dealing with is bad, especially if they close the shop down when you are trying to get your payment back! I know it is not great from the perspective of someone starting out as a seller either if you have questions. I have had no cause to contact etsy.com due to a bad sale but I know that misi.com did get back to me and suspend the shop in question, I assume etsy would do the same.
And finally, if you buy goods from any other country than your own and you are not in the E.U where goods can exchange freely from country to country within the E.U without VAT or customs duty, you the buyer are liable for any duties to be paid, unless you are buying say from amazon.co.uk and the buyer is out of the E.U in which case it states in amazon.co.uk's policies that the seller has to cover the fees. I don't know whether amazon does that in all countries but certainly the UK. Ebay sellers also have something that can set up sales so that the duty and customs is paid as part of the price of the item but otherwise if you get charged duty or VAT it is the buyer's responsibility. Of course any sellers on Etsy.com do have a duty. To make this clear, check each of their tabs on their pages, there is usually something written in there somewhere.
In the UK a buyer is liable to pay VAT on anything over £15.00 and in my experience usually the VAT is a small amount but Royal mail charge £8.50 in admin for any VAT claimed and Parcel Force's admin or handling fee is a whopping £13.00, so please be careful. I think in the States it is anything over $30 but what the charges are I don't know but again if you are unsure ask some questions. I know we like to order items as we find them but sometimes it is worth waiting a little while to get some answers!

I have shopped on Etsy for almost 2 years and never had a problem until now. Before if I had an issue with an order, the sellers always responded promptly and professionally. I am usually very easygoing, but I do not like being lied too. Here's my story - I purchased fabric on a Monday and paid for priority mail shipping. On Friday the order had not shipped, so I emailed the seller. The seller quickly responded telling me the fabric would be shipped that day. The seller didn't ship the fabric on Friday (as they stated they would). The seller sent the item on Monday (1 week after I purchased it). I sent the seller an email and asked why it wasn't shipped on Friday. The response was "we don't make promises on when we ship an item" and told I was no longer welcome to shop there.
I filed a case with Etsy Trust and Safety, showing the emails where the seller was rude, lied and shipped the item after I needed it. I only asked to be able to return the fabric, as I no longer needed it and the seller had already told me not to contact her again. The case was closed in less than 24 hours. I was sent an email from Etsy stating, "I do realize that the seller let you know they'd be shipping on Friday, and I can certainly understand your frustration that order didn't ship until Monday. Please understand that we are unable to hold {seller} responsible for this delay". What???? How are they not responsible??? Also Etsy never responded to my email about the seller being rude and telling me to never shop on Etsy again. No problem there, I will never buy another thing on Etsy.

What some consumers forget about reviews is some customers could generally have had a bad experience, but what about the scammers that are out there too, and there are TONS. Wanting the items, their money and leave a bad review, and Etsy DOES NOT stand behind sellers. As long as they pay their fees, they don't care what happens even with hard evidence. Lucky most use PayPal and tracking number there is a sign of hope. Sellers are not allowed to release this information to rebut review without having it deleted by Etsy themselves whether or not true - it call confidentiality. Or my favorite is when a buyer buys something has it specific to them wears or uses said items for their event, then expect the shop to take it back and give full refund including shipping, and if they don't then they we normally say "well you know I still haven't give your review" so that poor shop is out time with family, money, and now has to try sell a custom order. Good luck.

About 6 months ago, I discovered Etsy. I sell some but I buy more. Right before Christmas, a seller I had bought an old doll from, wrote me through their conversations and asked me if I would be interested in buying two other dolls she had. After she listed them, I bought them and we agreed she would hold them until the first of the year before she mailed them. I asked her on the third had they gone out. She said she would mail them on Monday. From that time on, she would not answer my inquiries anymore.
I had to figure out how to file what they call a case. The woman answered 5 minutes after I filed it. She gave all kinds of excuses for not mailing them and in the same email, she said she would give a refund days later. Now why she had my money and I had to wait to get it back, I do not know while it seemed she lied about items she didn't have. Like I said, except for filing out a form which apparently Etsy will process at their leisure, I have no options but to wait for my money if I get it and wait to see if Etsy will do anything with this lady who sells stuff she doesn't have.
Again, lack of support for buyers against their sellers I feel is a real problem. I think whether they want the responsibility or not, Etsy will have to be responsible for the integrity of their sellers if they allow them to use buyers that way. There are some fine craftsman on Etsy and most of them are responsible business people. A few like this are not. If an agreeable solution is not provided by Etsy, I think I might seek legal counsel to see what responsibility Etsy has for what they allow. Having your money taken and then being ignored by the seller made me very angry. Etsy has done nothing at this point about the situation.

And what I received was a set of the tags, exactly as pictured and described by the seller, but to my astonishment, these tags were obviously scanned and then printed on a colour copier, on flimsy old paper, to make them look like they were vintage! The tags were obviously cut by hand and all were very crooked when I tried to fold them. I had bought satisfactory items from this seller before. So when I received these tags, I was very disappointed. Needless to say, I never bought from this seller again because I felt very cheated. I ordered a $90 custom-order of hair and body products, which were supposed be smell like vanilla & patchouli. I was going away for work from June-August, so I placed my order at the very beginning of May. I told them about my need to have the order delivered before June 10th. As I was ordering so far in advance, AND I live only an hour or so away from where they ship from, I was assured it wouldn't be a problem. Well, the whole month of May goes by and I don't receive my order. They tell me they shipped it, but they don't know what happened. They offer to reship it. So, I wait another 10 days, and nothing. I then had to leave for the summer and told them that I wanted a refund. They gave me a refund but when I wrote a 2-star review for their Etsy shop, they said they would only reship my purchase free of charge IF I wrote a 4 or 5-star review. So I did. I wrote a fake a review simply so I could actually get the products I ordered.
Now, the first 2 times they said they had shipped, then reshipped, the package, I had requested tracking numbers and they never provided me with them. Finally, At the beginning of August, I get a package whilst away at work and lo & behold, it's from Sudsatorium. Not only had they just put the products in a normal mailing envelope; but everything had leaked and the products smelt TERRIBLE. Like chemicals! Not at all like vanilla & patchouli. So, overall, It took me 3 months, a refund, a fake review and several conversation JUST to get terrible products. It took me 5 months after that to even feel relatively comfortable shopping with Etsy. All in all, I would never recommend this "company."

I thought these reviews need a little balance. It seems like a lot of people are rating Etsy on a whole based on individual sellers. Etsy is a handmade community made up of thousands of different artisans. Sure, there are some sellers who are terrible at their job. They should not be running a business. But there are thousands of sellers who are wonderful! Committed 100% to quality and excellent customer service. I have been selling on Etsy for over 2 years and have over 700 5 star raving reviews, that doesn't lie. I have also been shopping on Etsy for the same period of time. I have dealt with some shops that have been a nightmare. It's usually my fault for not reading the shops reviews before I buy. But I have dealt with waaaayyyy more awesome shops! I have build friendships and wonderful business relationships with many of my suppliers and customers.
Etsy on a whole is a wonderful place to find unique, one of a kind handmade gifts and items. It is a great place to find supplies to make your own handmade items! But please, read the shops individual reviews before making a purchase. Shop around with the different sellers, compare prices and reviews, and make an informed purchase. It's not fair to penalize all of Etsy based on an experience with an individual seller.
Additionally, I have seen complaints about extra charges when a package is delivered to another country (usually the UK and Europe). These are not additional shipping charges. Each country has a specific Import duties and Customs taxes. This is a charge from the country the item is being sent to. Not a charge from Etsy or the seller. It is a fee that each country charges you for buying and having something shipped from outside your own country. To know the cost you will be charged for importing good into your country, you need to look up your countries Customs import duties, taxes, and fees. They are not all the same, and there is no way for a seller to know what you will be charged or collect that fee on your behalf.
In summary, please judge each Etsy seller individually, not as a whole based on a review about a specific seller. It is a wonderful community. But like any community, it has good and bad shops. Then it has some really amazing shops and shop owners! Thank you!

They have an A+ rating but that's only because enough people have not complained. If you file a complaint, they will be given a timeframe to respond. Here you might be able to resolve problems as well as deal with a real person, rather than sending an email and never getting a response. In the United States, you also may try this approach with sellers who have fail to deliver a product or a refund. I am an Etsy seller and buyer. I have made numerous purchases through etsy and have never had any problems. I currently sell on Etsy and have been for a few years and have always given excellent customer service. Etsy is a place where regular, everyday people (not corporations or big brick and mortar stores) can sell their handmade wares or vintage items or crafting supplies. Most of the vendors are regular folks that have regular jobs and have regular families and domestic lives and chores. They do this Etsy thing as a side thing and most make very little side money from it. It's mostly a joy for most of these people to make things on their little bit of spare time that they love to do. They are not surgically connected to a telephone or computer and they do not have the resources to hire a telecommunications person or company to take calls and answer emails all day long. They have to find time to do that during their busy days.
Some folks are better at managing a small home based business than others, but for most, it's more like a little hobby that self funds itself with a sale here and there. You can "size up" an Etsy seller by looking at their reviews, the amount of time they have been in business, how long they take to make and ship and how many sales they have. That is a good indicator of what to expect. Some buyers can wait for a lovely hand made goody to be made and then received weeks later and others want their stuff on-demand. If you are one of those on-demand type people, then you should be shopping at the big-box, made-in-china, giant stores. You must read policies and understand how each individual shop operates. When you shop at the other big places like Amz... and WallyW... and the mall stores, you already know what to expect because you have shopped there so often.
Etsy is not one big store... it is comprised of many, many individual shops owned by many, many individuals across this entire world. A few lucky Etsy sellers have managed to grow and become quite large and successful and some have grown so large that they now have their own websites and even brick and mortar shops. Etsy has made this possible for them and they started off as small, home based shops first. Some Etsy sellers already had a small shop and business before they got on Etsy and because of Etsy have been able to grow and stabilize their failing stores to a raging success. And finally, just as if you purchased something at a national store and had to return it or get a refund, you can do the same on Etsy and many all other places to shop at on the internet. You just have to follow the procedures to do that. Online, you can't just show up at the store and make a return... you have to process the return online. That is the risk of shopping online... the trade-off for not having to leave your home and that is really not a bad trade-off considering the fact that most online purchases are sound.

I absolutely adore Etsy! Although I don't have any experience as a seller, I have PLENTY of experience as a buyer! There is something about buying something straight from someone else knowing it is made by hand that just makes it so special and unique! But here is a tip for buyers: ALWAYS check reviews for shops! I like to see if there are any recent reviews (so that you know they actually complete the transaction). Also, I like to message the shop and if they don't respond in about 2 days, then I decide not to buy. I get it, you always have those doubts when buying from others, but I suggest doing your research and finding out if they are reliable or not before making ANY purchases.

I have recently reported to the Etsy Marketplace Integrity all the fake high end designer items (Chanel, Versace, YSL, Tiffany), etc. including pins/brooches, ribbons, etc. and absolutely NOTHING is done to stop their sellers from continuing to sell fake merchandise or merchandise not for resale. Additionally, ETSY does zero review of the items on their site to ensure their authenticity and then when the public (me) reports these items, nothing is done. Buyer must beware on this site and shame on you ETSY for not having a zero tolerance for counterfeit merchandise or the sale of merchandise that is not for re-sale!!!!!!!!!!!

The only reason I gave this place a one star is because I couldn't give it a zero. I had recently purchased an item on Etsy from a seller named craniumcouture. Once I'd received the item, it was not as described and I tried to return the item to get a refund. Not only was I harassed by this seller but she had accused me of lying. Then she put on this facade and said I was harassing her. They approved sellers who do business unprofessionally. The seller refused to seek any resolution with me. After a grueling 2 weeks of calling Etsy back and forth and anxiously waiting for a reply back from the seller, I didn't receive my money back. My efforts and time had been wasted. One of the worst customer services that I have ever experienced. I will not be purchasing from Etsy anymore. Unless you're willing to take that risk of never seeing your money back again, I would suggest you don't buy anything from this website.

Etsy's customer service is terrible and barely non-existent for that matter. I bought an item in one of the Etsy shops and one day after my purchase, the shop and the seller were gone! That is, shop and owner no longer available. The owner took the money and run closing his account and shop without sending my item (now I doubt there was any item to sell at first place). What could I do then? I tried to open a claim at Etsy's website: impossible, there are no links available for that matter until 20 days after your purchase. Great. So I tried to contact Etsy' customer service, and this is how they handle any problem like this one - Etsy: Ask the seller via his Etsy account about the problem. Me: But I've said that the seller closed his account and his shop one day after I ordered and paid for the item! So I have no way to contact him and I doubt he will be willingly to reply anyway. Etsy: Then contact your bank service or paypal. Bye!
So, to sum up: Etsy doesn't care about his web being infested by scammers, which affects both honest sellers and buyers equally. There is no way to act upon those situations in Etsy, just to rely on your bank or paypal (those who really resolved my problem finally). No penalties for those who commit fraud there. And finally, after the 20 days period to open a claim in Etsy, providing my order number, my receipt and all the evidence, it has been automatically closed by Etsy Trust and Safety without saying a word... great job Etsy. I was a happy Etsy buyer before this happened. Never again.

Emailed Etsy this information and they responded three days later that I had to contact Shop Owner and work it out. I responded that owner is not returning my emails, and they responded with the suggestion that I have Paypal deal with it. It's not much money, but it’s fraudulent. The main problem I see is that Etsy has no regard for people using their site. Why are they not policing the folks opening shops? They sit back and collect their share of the transactions and take no responsibility for the frauds going on in their website. Honestly that's no way to do business.

I'm not sure people understand that when you buy from Etsy you are buying from individual shops. Look at those shop policies and their reviews before you buy, if you don't like what you see don't buy from them. If you use Paypal when you make a purchase and you don't get the item or it is not as described YOU CAN GET YOUR MONEY BACK, just file a claim with Paypal. Also, just because a seller doesn't respond to your 5 frantic messages that you sent them today doesn't mean you are getting ripped out, these are individuals and not all of them are great at responding to messages, they might be out in their shop making that item for you!
I have bought lots of things off of Etsy and never had a problem. All of the sellers I have dealt with were very accommodating and I have some awesome handmade things and gave some awesome handmade things because of it, like a custom cat painted Christmas ornament for my in laws of their cat that they love. Unfortunately, my experience with ETSY was unsettling. I purchased a digital version of an invitation that I built from their website. The sole reason I chose to buy a digital version and print the invites out myself was because of time constraints. I was loosely aware of their policies, those that I had glazed over in the fine print on their website. Once I made my purchase I viewed my digital receipt to look the order over. However, the expected shipment date for my order was more than two weeks after I placed my order. That was way too long for me to wait and it seemed very long to wait for a digital invite to be emailed to me. I immediately tried to cancel using their order cancellation link. It sent an email to whomever in which I explained my reasoning for cancelling.
Two days later, I received a proof of my order, for me to review and submit, I responded with another email wishing to cancel, by then I had made other arrangements. I finally got a response to my last email where they explained, by no means do they ever approve cancellations and their operating policy is what they stand behind. So sour grapes for me. So understand, when you deal with Etsy it is a no matter what, no refunds business. I did complain, and they responded with Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

When you have a great product and wish to sell it, Internet is definitively the best way to have a global footprint and sell it all over the world, and market places are likely to be the best shortcut and money saving mean to promote your wares and brand. My project of making beautiful washed linen bedding at a reasonable price started with a particular market place in mind, as I thought it is corresponding perfectly to the crafts I wanted to propose, with the possibility to custom make items as per customer's requests, a close interaction with customers, Etsy has all that. My store was online.
After 2 years, from the first dozen of items I proposed on my Etsy store, I had added around 300 and the sales were growing very steadily, 100% positive reviews, five stars rating and close to 5000 items sold, till that morning of Sept 3rd 2014. While I was doing my routine check of messages and orders received from customers, I discovered that my shop has been deactivated. First I thought it was a mistake, as I could not understand any reason for it. I wrote to Etsy as no notice has been sent to me prior to it. No warning. I was just plugged off. The next day, after I sent one email to their support team, I received a very formatted reply without any clear explanation. I requested some details, evidences. I thought someone might have hacked my account, using my credentials, Paypal id, credit cards etc.., but they never paid any attention to my requests.
One week later, after searching over the internet to seek if it was exceptional and my case unique, I discovered dozen of people in the same situation: one fine day, they wake up and their all dream, their business, their living income, all is shattered because of some Etsy internal system failure and till date, they never recovered their account with Etsy.
The consequences for people in this situation can be disastrous. We had invested in a beautiful workshop to serve our customers, lot of inventory of fabric has been produced but from one day to another, they shut down your business and don't give any way you can defend yourselves, to prove them you have nothing to do with it. Their system may be failing, but it's too dangerous for their reputation and continuous growth to admit it, so they prefer to accuse their seller by terms such as "untrusted seller" etc and refer to their guidelines they worship as a bible to protect themselves behind legal terms. The back door of this beautiful crafters window, this friendly community has nothing very human, you are just an IP number, one seller among a million and if their system is detecting any issue with it, even you are not responsible for it, you are sentenced with no recourse.
Lately, they have set something they call Appeal to your cases and we did ultimately sent some letter to their team, and their single only reply was even more overwhelming. They explained that I have opened 5 accounts under a company called welletsunlimited connected to my existing store account and would have sold some counterfeit items, that is a major breach to the Etsy policies. Though I never heard about that company name, that I could not find even any trace of it on Google, and never proposed any counterfeit items on my store neither, it was the end of their verdict. I was accused of doing something I didn't do and my account has remained close till date. They never replied any of my following 4 emails sent to them, including a last request for an appointment in their Brooklyn office as I am ready to fly up there if it could give a chance to rectify the situation they put me in.
By this message, I wish to light the distress for such havocs they caused to some of their members and their family, and I would like to bring this message to all the folks who have in mind to start their small business with Etsy and send them a warning, that one day, no one knows when, everything can stop and you might get no way to get it back. No matter, you have been a loyal and devoted seller for years, feeding their 500 employees organization with listing fees, percentage on sells representing thousands of USD paid every month, no matter your store has been a great asset to them because at the end of the day, you make them growing bigger and bigger with your hard work, your long hours spend 7 days a week to respond to your customer's requests. Your beautiful store you are so proud of, the baby you have taken so much of efforts to grow just vanished one fine day. You can't even get your listings back, your reviews, your back office is not accessible, it's all gone, all belongs to them. Etsy did make your dreams come true and destroyed it at the click of a mouse.

My issue is not so much the fact that there will be fraudulent activity on etsy, it's the time frame of which they're willing to cover the lost funds. My order was made on August 2nd from "the African shop" based in UK. Items did not arrive to the US until September 4. I was given the option to return. Items didn't arrive back to the UK until Sept 30th. It's been a month now since I've awaited a refund and now the store has completely disappeared. So, how is that now my fault for "waiting too long" when in fact I moved as fast as I possibly could, yet the entire transaction took 2 months PLUS one month of rigmarole from the seller claiming they had put the money in my account when clearly they hadn't. This needs to be reviewed. Not to mention like everyone else, Etsy doesn't give two hoots about a complaint. I've sent 2 and they've not responded. However when tracking the parcel... it left its destination on 10/14 and the merchant is telling me it can take up to "14 business days"! This order did not ship from out of the country. My Post Office told me she shipped it the slowest way possible. Are you kidding me? Have been dealing with the merchant and have gotten excuse after excuse. I was also "overcharged" and the credit was not issued until 10 days ago (when supposedly the items were shipped).
First of all, I had to get the Etsy phone number from my credit card company when I filed a dispute against this merchant. Second of all, the phone number comes on with a recording that says they are not taking messages at this time and to e-mail them. Which I did, and I have not heard back. From what I understand, based on Etsy's vague emails, this other shop has a few open cases that were opened up by angry customers before they were shut down. Etsy is saying that somehow my information (email and address) overlaps with the closed shop's account - whatever that means! So they want me to take care of the open cases before they can reinstate my account! The problem is I have no relation to that other shop!! I've stated this to them numerous times already and in my last email I asked them to show me a screenshot or something so that I can see if someone has committed fraud and used my information without my knowledge.
It all sounds very fishy to me and Etsy has been very, very evasive. The emails I have exchanged with them are I am frustrated because I am being wrongly accused of being this other person, and they have suspended my account until I can get this sorted out. They are not giving me any help whatsoever nor any options to get this rectified. I have lost sales, all my time and effort putting up my listings, not to mention the longer my shop is suspended my credibility with my existing customers will be shot down. It's important to note that this is an online marketplace with thousands of sellers and buyers, and one store will not reflect the whole site's members and experiences available. My one gripe? The Chinese resellers that tend to flood the marketplace with cheaper junk items that are clearly not handmade. I see a lot of very unhappy people have left reviews, and I wanted to provide some balance. In the interest of full disclosure, I will mention up front that I sell handcrafted leather goods on Etsy and have done so since early 2008. Etsy is a vibrant marketplace with about 1 million sellers of goods from handcrafted to vintage, supplies for crafting and a few odds & ends. There are certainly some disreputable and dishonest folks who have signed up - the bigger the site gets, the more problematic this has become.
If you've had a bad experience with a seller, I can understand how infuriating that would be. Since you've paid an individual shop owner, not Etsy, they are the first place to go for satisfaction on a complaint. If they've closed shop (or been closed down by etsy due to complaints), the process for getting refunded involves contacting your credit card company or Paypal (whichever way you paid). Expecting Etsy to refund money paid to someone else is as unfair as expecting a mall office to refund money lost at a mall store. Trust me, those of us who value our Etsy clients are upset when we hear of such incidents, as we know it reflects badly on the whole of us. To blame Etsy or the multitude of honorable sellers for the transgressions of a few bad apples is unfair and inaccurate.
Before Etsy, there were few places for artisans and crafters to sell online. There was Ebay (and they have certainly had their problems and growth pains) and later, Craigslist (yikes there on a number of levels!), or you could open your own website and pray that people would find you in enough numbers to pay the site bill every month. Etsy has provided a marvelous platform for people like me (I have 100% satisfaction with my clients as reflected in the feedback they so kindly leave in my shop) and I know there are millions of satisfied Etsy customers worldwide.
I speak not just as an Etsy seller, but as an Etsy client and shopper. Sorry some of you have had bad experiences. I wish all of you happy purchases in the future, wherever you shop!

I've purchased many items on Etsy from numerous sellers and every experience has been positive, so I was shocked to see the negative reviews. Remember that when you purchase from a shop on Etsy, if you have a bad experience, it is the responsibility of that shop's owner to make it right, and Etsy isn't responsible. Etsy is merely the platform that allows seller to open shops. I've received outstanding customer service and have no complaints about Etsy or the people there I've done business with.

I bought a $200 sword and have been waiting patiently for it to come. Seller John ** said it’d take 2-3 weeks to create, which seemed fair, then it’d be shipped. It’s been over 1.5 months now and nothing here. I checked online and it said not even shipped yet so I’m like wtf. I contacted him on all my accounts and got nothing. It’s now over 2 months since I ordered and still nothing, and now when I search him/the product I get errors and he doesn’t show up anywhere like he just vanished. So pissed. This was a terrible first experience from a site I only heard good things about. NEVER buying here again and don’t buy from a John ** or enchantedgifts4u.

I'm going to paste the correspondence I had with the shop owner of Awkard, a company on Etsy. "Hello! I just received an item-not-received Paypal claim - which is my first Paypal claim ever, in six years of selling knitwear. This sweater is scheduled to ship on Thursday, so you can imagine my confusion there! Did you want to cancel your order? If so, I'm happy to do so - just let me know!"
As you can see the owner is irate that I have inquired about the shipping of my product and did not get an email about when the shipping was going to take place. Here is my response. I don't like doing business with people like that.
"I don't think you have to get so alarmed. I was merely wanting some sort of notice as to when the item was going to ship. This is a $94.00 item and you can imagine not getting any notice as to when it will ship. I think you may need a course in business 101. You don't send out shipping notices and you don't handle disputes like a professional neither. You see, you just lost a customer because of the way you handled this whole affair. Not the way to run a business. With an attitude like yours I hope there isn't any retaliation because I will follow suit."
Well the owner immediately cancelled the order and refunded my money. Good thing I got my money back. Bad experience with Etsy. Etsy's response was, "well we don't really care"!

I am a buyer. I paid $200 for a custom piece of art that arrived broken. The seller claimed a refund at post office and did not refund me. I have photos of damage to art and proof of insurance and shipping paid by me. Etsy says they will not do anything, they even got the sale date wrong by four months and cited a 45-day policy on refunds they have. I complained, and Etsy Trust and Safety said they only do something if the seller has violated more than one person. Here is what Etsy Trust and Safety sent me in an email response: "You can rest assured that sellers who continually demonstrate an inability to fulfill business obligations in a professional, honest manner are permanently removed from our marketplace. If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out again."

I was a seller on Etsy for almost a year. I have had 999 sales as of today. Because I used the following words or put a photo I took myself, I was kicked off today. Here are my infringements:
2) Used the phrase "Pandora Like Beads".
3) Took a photo of the Moulin Rouge in Paris and was reprimanded for the copyright on the building.
4) Whether or not a banged up old Vera Bradley bag was over 20 years old.
5) Made a necklace with a Heidi Klum designer chain and got in trouble for using the name Heidi Klum, and today
6) A photo I took of Moet Champagne in 2007 and listed it in January of this year and just happened to change the title to reflect what it was, they kicked me off permanently.
These has been harassment with a clique of Etsy shop owners to get me blacklisted too. I have been sent emails, not sold to and even told that I was extorting money from one shop owner, which until today when I asked my attorney what that meant, I didn't even know what that meant. I was also threatened to have the FBI called on me by this person, for what??? Yet there is all these Asian shop owners who I KNOW they don't make their own products, there are still photos of Moulin Rouge, etc.
I don't know why I have been picked on since I paid for advertising, brought them money with my 999 sales (I didn't get my 1000th sales as I was looking forward to) for they took that away from me and only sent me another canned letter as they always do when one tries to reach out and tell them anything. I would give no stars if I could because I did what they wanted and cannot understand that I can't sell something that says M&M but others can sell things that they make and say DISNEY. Thank you for listening.

I purchased some items about a year ago and it was great. Great seller communication and products. I decided I wanted to get some gift items from several sellers throughout Aug and Sep 2014. Apparently, Etsy is now a free for all for sellers and has moved away from handmade artists only. There are many international sellers suddenly on there. I have had to request refunds for 4 out of 6 purchases due to items never shipping. When time had passed and I did not have the items, I looked on Etsy for shipment status and to try to contact vendor. All 4 vendors had dropped off Etsy and no longer existed---so you can't contact them to ask where the items are.
If you pay through Paypal, Etsy does not issues refunds. I do not know how it works for any other payment method. I remember someone mentioning that Etsy had opened its system to anyone---completely unvetted. So scammers can take your money and if you pay with anything other than Paypal, you're probably never going to see your money again. I have seen hundreds of complaints since this change (of course not until AFTER my purchases) about sellers taking the money and not shipping anything. There must be some legal recourse to shut Etsy down if they won't stop allowing scammers to operate through their site.

ETSY wants to keep this conversation private so they can hide their shameful mistake. To all of you great ETSY sellers that got your account suspended, there's still light at the end of the tunnel. I opened My shop almost 6 months ago and I started selling Elsa Costumes and hair bows. Everything was going fine. When I went to check for my orders I saw my account got suspended. When I read my email it was because "I was selling something that was not handmade". I sent pictures, videos of me making the dress, a description how to make it (they asked for it), and they said I needed to delete and stop selling the Elsa Costumes, which I did and only left the Frozen hair bows and all the other ones.
Then like 3 months later I saw another shop "FANCYFROZENCOSTUMES" with my dress pictures!!!!! I tried to report this store 19 times, even my friends did, and they did nothing about it! This lady is still selling the dresses with my pictures. I posted my dresses again, because if some other shops are doing it, then why not me? Yeah right, two days later, my account got suspended again.
I tried to talk to Susannah (VERY RUDE LADY) from the "Etsy integrity team" and she said "the proof I submitted is not enough?" Really? Even with the pictures and a video cutting the patterns and even sewing the dress? Obviously my account was targeted and I even started to believe this other store has something to do with her, because it is not fair for me and WARNING! Etsy deleted a review regarding a seller because it was NOT 5 stars without any communication with me (the buyer). Why ask for reviews if you are going to delete them after everything under the sun has been tried to rectify the problem. Allow the review to stand. BEWARE of the following company: KROMMdesign out of Montreal, Canada. The following is a review that I wrote regarding this company about a product I bought from them.
"Arrived DAMAGED in 3 different places!! I have waited until now to write a review because I would have written a completely inappropriate critique filled with inexplicable epithets if I had done so at the time of the arrival of the table. I was that mad and angry!!! The packaging (if you can call what the table arrived in packaging) was completely useless for this endeavor. The outside box was nothing more than many broken down cartons that were taped together to form one large outer container to hold the table.
Let me give you the dimensions of the table: Length = 54 inches. Width = 22 inches. Height = 19 inches. Weight = 65 lbs. You did not have to be an engineer to see that this was NOT going to end well once the table was shipped. Inside the box, the table was wrapped with a very loose fitting sheet of canvas. The rest of the padding inside the box was nothing more than MORE broken down cardboard boxes loosely fitted around the table. That was the padding used to protect this 65 pound table that was to be shipped from Montreal to Tennessee.
It is common knowledge that everything that is shipped is NOT HANDLED WITH CARE!!! You have to be proactive and protect the product you are shipping to the hilt. I wish they had simply asked me and I would have been happy to send them more money to invest in appropriate packing materials. I would have been happy to protect my $1300.00 investment. They shipped this on the cheap and it is completely indefensible. There is NO JUSTIFICATION for the manner in which this was shipped. All I can say to anyone reading this is: BUYER BEWARE, BUYER BEWARE, BUYER BEWARE!!!"

Through various screen/store names, I have been there from the beginning and I have watched the website decline from a handmade utopia to the 7th level of hell for handmade sellers. Here is just an outline of some of the major problems (there have been dozens more than what is mentioned) that I have encountered as a seller on Etsy:
I had my *1st major* issue with them when they allowed another seller to replicate my products, to the T, sell them as her own and tell people on other websites I was the one stealing from her. I tried getting Etsy to intervene since it was their selling platform that initiated the 1st attack and was being used to fraud my business and they refused. They sent me a message that basically read as "we encourage sellers to steal popular designs from others."
My 2nd major issue was when a "front page seller" made the front page in October with an item that she stole the pictures and wording/description from me and they didn't change the item to link back to me, instead they just took it off the front page. I had to fight them for weeks to make that seller remove over 20 pictures and item descriptions stolen from my store.
My 3rd major issue with them - and when I closed my Etsy store the 1st time - is when a jewelry company stole one of my jewelry designs, copyrighted it and used Etsy to send me a cease and desist. Etsy Legal team sent me a hostile and threatening email telling me not to relist the item. Etsy ALSO removed the item from my store and removed every single transaction of the item I sold in the past so I couldn't use Etsy to prove I was selling the item before "company x" stole the design.
4th Major Issue: My Etsy store is now closed for good because I had a yet another customer try to use the feedback system to blackmail me for a refund on a product received. Etsy refused to intercede. Out of the 1,000+ positive feedback I have this ONE negative brought down my entire store rating. Not only did Etsy refuse to remove the feedback, they locked my account and sent me several threatening emails to remove what I have stated about them or they would not allow me to use their site to buy/sell.
As seller who has been with Etsy since week 1 of their launch and has tried to work with them and overlook their CS issues and refusal to side with sellers in the event of issues, I can honestly say I will never use Etsy again for buying or selling.

Each and every store is individually owned. I see many complaints about the VAT tax. If the buyer would take the time to read the seller's policies, they would realize it's not the seller's place to pay your taxes. It's your country that has put that tax in place. I haven't had a bad customer or a bad buying experience on Etsy. Read the about page, read the reviews, read the policy page. To blame Etsy for a bad buying experience would be like going to one store in the mall and having a bad experience and never going back to shop in any of the stores in that mall. I was contacted today by Etsy indicating that I had violated seller guidelines by avoiding fees. I received a custom order last week through a conversation. The customer could not find the custom order link because I am part of the new look beta test. I found it and sent her the link. She clicked on it multiple times, but nothing happened, so I created an invoice for her on PayPal. I was rebuked by Etsy for fee avoidance. They told me I should have contacted support. It takes AT LEAST three days to hear back and when you do, it's a boilerplate response that doesn't actually address the question, leading to additional emails over many days that "may" actually, eventually address your original question, at best.
I pointed out that doing this process would violate other rules, like providing good customer service. They then told me to create a custom listing myself; that link is invisible under the new beta they are doing, which is all I can see on all of the computers I have access to. I received a "final" warning for fee avoidance, even though this transaction is the direct result of Etsy's failure to provide a functional e-commerce site. Furthermore, there is no indication in the 29 pages of seller guidelines as to what the "warning" structure is - how does one, after seven months of selling, get to a "final" warning? I have requested a phone call after repeated emails to explain how to get the custom listing working under the beta, the Etsy support lag time, and the warning structure have gone ignored. This transaction occurred yesterday, so clearly, despite saying they have no record of the transaction, they do and they are patrolling regularly. Too bad they are not as responsive to sellers who actively seek their help.

She understood this was my last available date for over 6 weeks. Information from Briel began to be sparse as the delivery date approached. I never received final photos of one of the pieces which was the largest, most elaborate and required some real artistry.
Two days before scheduled delivery I received an email stating she may not be able to deliver - BECAUSE IT MIGHT RAIN. I asked what she planning on using to make the delivery and reminded her delivery had to take place on the agreed upon date and she agreed it would. At 11:45 am on the scheduled date (delivery was scheduled for 3pm) she texted she was broken down at the Connecticut/Rhode Island border and was waiting for a replacement U-Haul. I have a shop on Etsy. I have had it for over 2 years now. As a shop-owner, I've only had one customer bully and threaten me before giving me a chance to answer her accusations. As a buyer, WOW... There are some real bad sellers on Etsy. One, named "LovMely" out of LA still owes me money after 2 years and lots of ignoring me convos and complaints to Etsy, who by the way did nothing about this shop that I am aware of... DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THIS SHOP!
I ordered 2 items from another shop whose name I forget...the owner substituted a different item than the one I ordered because he 'had already sold' the item pictured and forgot to remove the listing. He shipped the items before consulting me, thinking it would be OK. Since it was a matched cabochon pair and no two are exactly the same, I was very unhappy and asked for my money back. He could not understand why I wanted to do this...no one else he'd done it to had ever complained (pretty sure it's an Etsy no-no to switch out advertised/purchased merchandise that is pictured with that which is not...
I ended up going ahead and giving him neutral feedback. He went completely bonkers on me. If an email could scream at you, his did. He was just such a total jerk I was completely taken aback. I thought the customer was always right...? I had already paid for the items, and was going to pay for the return shipping, but he STILL kept complaining to me that no one had ever done this to him (he was so vehement about it I realized this is probably the status quo for how he operates his shop). I looked at ALL his feedback, since he told me he'd NEVER gotten negative feedback before and found several negatives posted. He started harassing me about this, now...2 or more convos a day, and I WAS THE DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER!
He was a cyber-bully: truly annoying and just plain creepy/scary! I didn't know what he was going to do. We finally agreed that I would remove the neutral feedback (even though he never apologized for all the harassment), and I thought that was the end. Well, a few days later is when that unsatisfied customer I mentioned at the beginning (the OTHER cyber-bully who went completely medieval on me with convos and threats and told me I was a thief and a liar) placed her now infamous order with me. I've always wondered if they are friends (or even the same person) and he/she did this on purpose for revenge. Not something a normal well-adjusted mature human being would do.
I did report them to Etsy that I thought the cabochon seller was bullying me, but they did nothing to him that I know of. These are the only times in the over 2 years of selling (and buying) that I ever had any trouble on Etsy. Many, many sales and purchases have transpired, and everyone else has been extraordinarily pleasant and customer service oriented! Some vendors even send you candy with your purchase! (I love that!) But boy, those 2 bad ones were almost bad enough to scare me away. You just can't find some things ANYWHERE ELSE, even eBay (which I absolutely DETEST!) for the prices you can on Etsy. What's a girl to do, eh?

If you have money to lose, be my guest, you have been warned! That's cruel!

I bought iphone holder on etsy from company named Travis sun. I paid 20$ plus delivery charge and never got that. Was trying to contact seller but no answer, no money back, no holder, nothing!! So mad and customer service told me I have to wait 2 months and after that report seller which is too long and complicated!!! And I checked the review of this seller and I'm not the one with such experience. That means etsy doesn't really care, so I would advice never use this site if you don't wanna lose your money!!!

What a site, ETSY like something out of a fantasy land. I was dumb enough to list some stuff on here. The site has a forum to allegedly help sellers. The site is straight out of commie land. They have these jackasses in hats and shills that monitor all info. They do nothing but lie and cheat new sellers all day. Example they say 20 cents and add 3.5 % fee on sales. You will never see a sale. Etsy has sellers do all promotions, after you invest time and money they steer your promoted customers to a handful of sellers.
This appears to be a bizarre scheme, undoubtedly legal, since the Corporations get everyone to sign a user agreement no one understands. If you ask or refer to any facts in forum (sellers) you get removed and blocked from any input or info - communism. The Supreme Court gave Corps a free speech ruling to buy election , and they all deny any form of free speech, Etsy is a major bait and switch site. They remind me of a 1970's televangelist type. It’s all fraud with the fake sincerity, the site has no support PERIOD.
They tell new sellers lies all day. Folks list good stuff at good prices and no sales come they cannot figure it out, so they ask for help in forum, only to be greeted by the shills of ETSY. Here's how it goes: They tell new folks, ‘You need more stuff, list at least 100 items, that will bring sales.’ No it doesn’t, it pads Etsy's pockets (privately held pockets). Then they say ‘Your photos need work, add tags by advertising from us.’ They completely are screwing poor innocent hard working Americans. Go to forum and look at removed info then see what’s left. Mind you this is a information forum for a buying and selling site. They have shills flood the forum with nonsense all day, these folks work for ETSY. Fraudulent system, very transparent.
Read the forum. Complete nuthouse. AVOID THIS PLACE WITH YOUR CASH. You’re feeding a pyramid scheme, taking from the little hard working people and delivering it to the few the greedy and the dishonest. Do not sell here, you’re throwing time and money down the drain. I currently have a site, I listed 50 items. My stuff comes up on Google but when you click they redirect you to other stuff. See, Etsy is a site that certain people get a free ride on, the shills. ETSY uses sellers to have their cake and eat it too.

Etsy is one of those places that is incredibly risky to buy things from. I love vintage and retro items and I appreciate people going out collecting these rare garments to resell. However, I suggest everyone to be more careful. Jewelry and handmade items are usually fine, but my problem is with clothes. Here are some suggestions based on my experience:
If you don't want to be disappointed, avoid buying anything that is "mystery" like "mystery sweater" and get a random sweater. Very rare do people actually like what they receive. You can read a seller's feedback and tell. Side note: I specifically purchased a sweater from a buyer. Not only did she not tell me the sweater was actually a very dark navy (not black like I wanted), she also never stated the sweater might be scratchy and it was.. VERY.
A lot of sellers sell items like amateurs despite their high number of feedback. They would list NO specific details about their garments, and just put "all questions must be asked before purchasing" and then "absolutely no returns" with little or no details. If you ask them questions, they either don't respond timely in which someone else could've bought the item already OR they get annoyed that you keep asking questions. They also price shipping to a ridiculous amount. Since when does it goes $5.95 to ship a tank top? Is Etsy doing this or the sellers? I don't even know. But to buy a $5 tank and have to pay $6 on top of that for shipping is really stupid... retail does this to us too.
I had a lot of horrible purchases: I purchased a vintage sweater and the description said "soft and comfortable". When I received the sweater, it was a stiff knitted sweater and was very heavy. I also purchased a bag once and it was supposed to be in excellent vintage condition. The strap broke on its own while in STORAGE. I then purchased a ring that I thought was handmade but it was actually a mass-produced item that LOOKS handmade - from a Korean seller. I also purchased a hair bow for my friend for $7 and the bow broke off the claw not too long later.
I browsed many shops and all of them are obvious mass-produced in China but they sneakily try to hide behind a mask of putting up realistic images of their work and say things like "handmade in my workshop" when you can find the same stuff on Ebay. Those faux leather bags and vintage trunks/suitcase were NOT handmade.
I appreciate how Etsy is wanting to help the handmade community. The fees are low but I tried selling there and it was impossible to get any traffic. I paid to put an item up for 3 months and it didn't sell at all. I am quite satisfied with Etsy although not exactly happy. A lot of sellers are really vague about their items but don't accept returns when there are obvious problems. I learned and instead of demanding a return, I simply just don't purchase from them and be more careful or I just resell the item elsewhere.
If you're the type who wants to buy vintage and want to be sure of what you're getting, you should just visit thrift shops on your own and see things in person. I was disappointed with so many purchases on Etsy that I don't shop there anymore. 80% of the stuff I got ended up being resold or the donation bin. It's like retail prices for clothes that are 3 decades old.

I purchased a dress for my bridesmaid and never received the dress. The cellar wedding dress girl was thoroughly unhelpful and the entire transaction dragged on for months. Don't trust online reviews from Etsy. Not only will you encounter problems with surprise customs fees that are not mentioned anywhere in conversations between you and the seller, you will likely never receive your item and the cellar will hold your money hostage until you give them a false positive review. No point going to Etsy management to mediate the situation; they condone false reviews, stating that "you can change your review at a later time." You will never see your money again. Etsy will not lift a finger to help and you will only be left with feelings of rage and frustration. This didn't just happen to me; it happened to a friend as well. Just a heads up. Not all cellars are spammers. Just don't buy anything from the store named Lovely Wedding Dress and don't expect that all stores possess legitimate reviews.

I ordered some stuff from Etsy a month ago and it still has not arrived. Have contacted the seller but he refuses to reply my inquiries about the status of my delivery. I then contacted Etsy hoping for some resolution but those messages have gone ignored as well. This is my first experience shopping with Etsy and it has not been a good one. Never buying anything from Etsy again.

I closed my Etsy account several months ago and keep getting fees taken from my bank account. I did not sell anything or buy anything. They keep dipping into my account. I tried to call and they do not answer. They have never emailed me back and I have to change my bank account number, so they can't keep charging me fees for a closed account. No one helps, emails back, nor answers their 800 number. Seriously beware. This is a nightmare. I don't know what else to do. I already closed my account with them, and they won't let me reopen or access it to delete my bank account number.

NimbiDesign seller on Etsy was a joke. So rude! Long story we messaged each other back about 30 times or more. I ordered a cake topper that was offered in 2 inches. She had just started advertising these locally and got a lot of customers from it. She then changed her prices on her site and said she doesn't offer the 2 inch cake topper and wouldn't refund my money. It went from $20 to $50 and I had to pay the difference!
I told her that I no longer wanted it if she couldn't provide me with what I ordered! She then messaged me saying it was all my fault. She wrote me 3 paragraphs being super unprofessional & RUDE. She asked me to order something else so I ordered cup cake toppers. She said she was doing me a favor and what I was getting was $100 worth.
I waited to receive the items when all she sent me was 10 smaller then one inch toothpick size cup cake toppers. They are so small it's ridiculous. She sells these same things on her site for $25.00 (which is a rip off) & it's just a waste of $33. Not to mention she originally charged me $13 shipping then changed it to $6 and didn't mention to refund me. As soon as I did she credited me $2 which was the difference. She won't refund me for not having what I ordered but is super quick about refunding me when she overcharges me. SUCH a headache!

My fiancee and I have purchased a ring from markfrugal, the amount was converted to Paypal and taken from my account. Have not heard anything from this shipper about our purchase nor are we getting any help from ETSY. This is just stupid that a middleman is ok with their companies to rip people off, so now we're out $159.00

When I pleaded for Etsy's help and showed them documentation that their team, so-called "trust and safety" says they have read (I have that in writing too) how one of their sellers stole $1212 on 1/19/14 from me and has been hustling for months now (all in writing and read by Etsy so-called "trust and safety" team) now one more day and we are in June. Five months, the seller has taken over one thousand dollars from me and has been conning me and absolutely refuses to give me my hard-earned money back - $1212 all in writing and read by Etsy.
Etsy does nothing except stand by its seller and to this day that seller is still on the site stealing from good trusting people like me. The only little thing I could do (I thought) is leave the seller a bad rating and write a brutally honest review of my experience not only to let the seller and Etsy know that what they are doing to trusting people buyers, who wanted to just pay for goods and got conned and swindled instead. It was my one little opportunity to let others know what Etsy is really all about = not taking any responsibility for anything at all and totally supporting a seller that to this day that they have written proof of lying, cheating, and stealing from me, and the shop is still up and running.
So I leave my review on Etsy and then I am informed that my review was removed and there is no other opportunity to leave a review ever again, since: because their 'fight club' rules and regulations are that I cannot write about Etsy in any way or even mention their name on the review. The seller also, with Etsy's in writing acknowledgment that the seller stole $1212 from me and will not give me my money back and there was never any item in existence, let alone sent. This crooked seller is still protected, no truthful bad reviews allowed, still on Etsy's site. I know there were good sellers on Etsy.
My experience for a brief time was a good one with good small artisans. But please, good small artisans: find another venue. Etsy is a bunch of thugs that totally stand by any crooked people that blatantly and in writing lies, cheats and steals from you. Then you can't even give them a bad rating or review. It is really disturbing for me and others to know how horrible and unjust and bullying and crooked they are. Etsy is as guilty and maybe even more guiltily of stealing my $1212 with no merchandise in exchange ever, ever (and written proof of this) just as if not more guilty of stealing my $1212 as their crooked con artist seller is and this has got to stop and this should not be tolerated.
I am happily assisting in generating a class action suit against Etsy now. They should not be able to get away with supporting their extremely (in writing) illegal sellers as well as Etsy's own extremely unethical and inhumane business practices. Buyers, honest good legitimate sellers, potential buyers of any potential Etsy stock shares (as all analysts will also be informed of our experiences as well as any pending class action suit against Etsy), please, all decent honest law-abiding ethical people beware, please beware. Etsy will not be in business stealing money from people and doing their best to silence people for much longer. Time for the truth to come out about Etsy.

I purchased a product through one of the sellers on Etsy named karenmiles. I purchased this in November and we are about to June. Despite repeated emails and calls, I cannot get an update or even a refund on something that was supposed to take 6-8 weeks. I suppose I should have suspected this could happen with Etsy as they do not seem to really hold their sellers accountable. I was supposed to have written a complaint by January according to Etsy to even consider letting me writing a review, when the seller was claiming to not have even started on my order at that time.
In any case, Etsy does not seem to hold its vendors accountable for failure to provide products. You would think that would be the bare minimum and that if it occurred, Etsy would no longer allow them to be a vendor. Unfortunately, I lost my money and a lot of time trying to get something that I will never see. I would never buy anything through Etsy again.

On eBay as ** I have not had any problems. I just wanted to increase sales and heard about Etsy. They wanted a bank account and also a credit card and eBay didn't. They did ask for a credit card which has expired and eBay doesn't care. I do PayPal and don't mind if THEY have my personal checking account etc. but a selling site? No, I see no reason for them to have it. I'm going back to eBay where I'm trusted. I have 100% pos. feedback selling and buying both. With identity theft and also Etsy asked for the last 4 of my social security number! Not eBay! If I was a true scammer I would have a fake ID and SSN and it would check out. So that's hardly a reason for them to have enough info to steal my identity… With the SSN they could for sure. I'm getting out while I can before I continue. Thanks all for the comments.

My disclaimer: I do not work for Etsy. I do, however, conduct business with them in the sense that I have run a fairly active Etsy store for two years now.
I think what a lot of people fail to realize about Etsy is that they are merely a middleman so to speak. Each individual store on the site is run by a specific person who is not exactly affiliated with Etsy. One of the nice things for vendors about Etsy, compared to other similar sites, is that they allow each seller to set their own store policies. The actual store owners, not Etsy, set everything from shipping times to refund policies to prices and everything in between. Etsy is merely a gateway for people like me to sell our items. So if you are purchasing something on Etsy, make sure to check that seller's specific store policies as not all sellers put them in the listings. The vast majority of complaints I have read here seem to circulate around a person's failure to understand this detail.
As for Etsy itself? It's not a terrible site to sell or purchase on. Some of their terms of service are a bit foggy in some areas and leave the door open to interpretation. But their seller fees are actually pretty nominal compared to other sites. I think we are paying 3-4% of the sale to Etsy for the transaction fee. There is no fee to set up a store but there is a very small (something like 20 cents) listing fee. Compared to some sites, that is awesome! Listings are only good for a couple of months then need to be renewed, and yes you will have to pay a listing fee again. The other nice thing about Etsy is that they allow their vendors to put all their shipping expenses onto their Etsy bill. This eliminates the need for a separate account somewhere else (like USPS or UPS or FedEx) and it all comes neatly packaged in one bill at the end of the month. This really helps if you are a small shipper that is on a tight budget and prefer to pay all expenses at one time.
There are some real big downfalls to Etsy, though. This is why I can't give them more than a 3-star review. It's crowded for starters. Most stores get lost among the noise of everyone else. And unless you are searching for a specific item, oftentimes the smaller shops will go completely unnoticed. The other thing that I've noticed about Etsy is that if you pay them for advertising, you will get ads placed online, but they don't necessarily go to your store. I've seen our ads, with our pictures, online and clicked on them to see how they were routing only to be sent to the main Etsy page, not our store (after I found that out, after a six month advertising campaign, I don't pay them to advertise anymore, we do all the legwork).
The other issue that I have with Etsy is that, unlike when it first started up, today it is getting filled up with a lot of imported and knockoff stuff. This isn't really Etsy's fault because, as I pointed out above, each individual merchant is responsible for what they sell. I just think Etsy should have a little more oversight on that issue. So there you have it. A fair and objective overview of Etsy. Don't believe all the negative press because oftentimes it's more of a misunderstanding than anything else.
