Purchased Hot Water Heater via Lowe's and purchased the extended warranty. At six months in, AWH refused our claim on their one year manufacturer's warranty because our HWH is installed in a vented closet within our 1/2 bath on the our first floor. At no time during the purchase or installation, did Lowe's inform us that the warranty would be null and void. However - Lowe's insists that they will cover us during the initial one year + our five year extended warranty. Here we are 2 years in and it breaks again. Lowe's sends our service request to AWH and they refuse to service our unit (based on Lowe's extended warranty - Lowe's will pay them!) due to their void language in their booklet. THEY ARE RUDE, HORRIBLE, AND THE ABSOLUTE WORST COMPANY EVER! If zero stars was an option, I would select zero. One star is an insult to other one star companies. DO NOT BUY WHIRLPOOL PRODUCTS!!

I was researching hot water gas hot water tanks. I have a American PowerFlex in my house now installed by me in my closet. Believe it or not that was 20 years + and it is still working fine. No complaints. The noise of the fan is annoying. So since that time I built a attached garage and have added hot water heat with the boiler in the garage. I want to either move the PowerFlex hot water into the garage and hook the exhaust into the exhaust pipe in the boiler without the PowerFlex fan if that can be done? Or buy a new hot water tank because maybe I am on borrowed time with the old one? But American water heater I have had good 20 year service with won't continue on with that brand. Any suggestions?

Our home warranty company chose the American hot water tank as a replacement for our old water heater, we had no part in selecting this poor quality product from this manufacturer. The heater did not produce hot water and it did not have enough hot water stored for more than 5-10 minutes of usage be it laundry, a shower, or hand washing dishes. Home warranty company did not respond when promised during the first six months of receiving American hot water heater. Yesterday, February 20, 2017, 6 months and 20 days after the American hot water tank was installed, the unit stopped working. There is power to it, it is not leaking, and resetting it did not resolve the problem. Home warranty company referred me to American Hot Water whom has a unusually high call volume every time I call, so I have been unable to reach them. Today is day two of trying to contact American Hot Water Heater.

I own a small business, and purchased an American brand water heater. It stopped heating up water so I called tech support. They recommended a plumbing company. Took them THREE weeks of guessing and trying replacing different parts to finally give up and send a new unit. Now I have a bill of almost $3000. I could've bought 2 brand new water heaters!!

We have a customer who purchased a model BFG61-50T40-3NOV S/N 1136T463465 3/13/2012. This is still covered under the 6 year warranty. Our tech called American and the tech knew exactly what the problem was and sent a new gas valve to replace. This is where the defect in workmanship occurs. The gas valve nipple is made of a thin plastic. The nipple had small traces of Teflon tape over the threaded portion of the valve. Upon removal of the valve the nipple broke off. Leaving the nipple stuck inside the water heater. The effort to remove the nipple were unsuccessful.
So here we are on Friday afternoon to try and get our customer with hot water over the weekend. We took the initiative to replace the water heater with same make & model, thus the customer was taking care of. I called American to seek a credit for the replacement tank. In good conscience I thought a manufacturer as big as American would issue a credit due to a manufacturer defect but to no avail. American's technical department said that I could beat on the broken part with a hammer and it would not harm the threaded portion of the tank where the nipple was stuck. I find that hard to believe. I would just like to seek a credit for replacement water heater.

Current health makes me want to get it installed now so I don't have issues in the near future. I am searching for the same Heater that is NEW 2016. Best Water Heater Ever. I'm scared to get something made in China. All You people who are complaining must be doing so about a GAS Heater. BIG difference. Please be specific.

My husband and I have had nothing but problems working with this company. Their product is inferior. We have had more than 3 complaints with this water heater. Within 3 weeks of my husband passing away, we have had the control valve/thermostat fail, twice. The day of his memorial, my entire family had to go to neighbors to get hot showers. The using of "American" in their name is misleading and manipulative. I hope to spare other customers the utter pain and frustrating at dealing with this so-called company.

My water heater stopped producing hot water on 06/06/2016. On 06/16/2016, after several visits by my plumber, Big City Plumbing, my water heater was replaced by a new American Water Heater: model # g61-50T40 400 (the box indicated a new 6 year warranty...). I have a 6 year warranty on the old Water heater effective 01-18-2012. So, after 4 years the water heater had to be replaced. My issues are: Water heater had to be replaced after only 4 years. Per Melanie at American Water Heater Company: they only prorate my warranty on the new water heater by the remaining warranty on the original water heater. That implies that they do not have much faith in their product. I would not recommend this company for water heaters.

If I could rate the service of this company less than one star I would. This is the biggest crook of poo that I have EVER witnessed. We purchased our new hot water tank from Sears in Nov of 12 and have had nothing but issues since. The first one happened in Oct of 14 and every couple months since we've had something happen. Not every time do we call to talk to the warranty company because when we call in Oct of 15 (with another issue of it not staying lit) they gave us a 'how to light' manual and said, "When it goes out, try these things then call if there are still issues".
So anyway, every couple months we call and they tell us to take something apart and clean it then relight and we're good for a little bit but then the same stuff happens again. The last issue that occurred on 5.12.16. This is the one that has cost us the most. This time, we paid the contractor they send $169 to tell us they couldn't fix it and that we would be a WEEK without hot water. A WEEK, there is a 8-year-old boy living at my house and I would go a week as a 75-year-old women without hot water. This is ridiculous! As many times as we have had issues and yet again they are coming out to fix the same stuff that has been fixed before, we still are not permitted a new hot water tank. This is the worst warranty I've ever experienced in my life and I've seen some shady stuff. I will NEVER purchase another Whirlpool, especially if I know American Water Heater Company is attached in any way.

I bought a 75-gallon water heater from Lowe's made by American Water Heater. In June 2013, it broke and received a replacement unit under warranty through Lowe's at a price of $600. In April 2016, the new unit UBG62-75-T75-4NV started leaking again. I contacted a licensed plumber and diagnosed that the inner tank was ruptured and not repairable. I've reported American Water Heater and they issued a Return Authorization number after more than 10 phone calls, wasting a few hours each time of phone call. I went to Lowe's with the authorization number and the Lowe's needs to find out the replacement unit because the unit I have is no longer available. The manufacturer, John from American Water Heater, said the replacement unit is VG6275T100NV. Later Lowe's told me that the replacement unit VG6275T100NV is priced at $3700.
The Lowe's told me that I have to pay the difference of $600 and $3700; in other words, I have to pay $3100. Now all I am asking is to replace my water heater since it's supposed to be covered by 6-year warranty. Mine is less than 3 years. But then, I have to pay $3100 additionally after warranty coverage? What kind of warranty is it? There must be a fraud here. After two weeks of agonized talks with American Water Heater and Lowe's, I had to give up this battle and ask a local plumber to install a totally different brand water heater because I desperately need hot water. I can't believe this type of irrational business is still around in the greatest nation like America. Thanks for reading my horrible experience.

Very little hot water. I have to rush thru my shower to be able to have enough hot water. And even then there isn't enough to do any extras such as shave legs/pits or to scrub brush my back or feet. I have to skip washing my hair to be able to fit anything else in. I called the company that installed the water heater and they told me that while using the hot water, cold water enters the tank, so there is less and less of it. What a bunch of hooey. I didn't have this problem with my old water heater that is the exact same size, in fact, I would take a leisurely shower and still be able to have another person shower immediately after me. This is a piece of junk! And to top it off, the jerks that installed it WAY overcharged me. I am going to have to replace this piece of costly junk. I don't need to stress over having enough hot water to get through my shower every morning; I have enough stress in my life without that.

Purchased Envirotemp water heater from Lowe's on 11/22/2015. Seemed to work ok at first. Now as you're taking a shower within 5 minutes or less you have to turn the cold water down to get hot water. In a 15 minute shower, by the time you are finished you have to have the cold water turned all the way off to have hot water. The company keeps telling us that it is not their tank that is faulty, that it must be a water leak or faulty water faucet on our part.

Well within the warranty period my water heater pilot would not stay light, hard to relight and went off again. Contacted warranty service. They sent instructions by email and wanted to refer me to local plumbers on their own list. I was able to relight the pilot only if the metal cover over the valve was not used. No parts sent although they would recommend the most likely part needed was an inexpensive thermo couple. None sent. I'm wondering now if running the heater without the plate across the valve (the only way it stayed on for months) is safe.
Now I'm 5 weeks past the 6 year parts warranty and can't get heater to work. I called, explained to first person then to 'manager' named Fernando. I should get some help considering this is a long standing problem they never helped me with while under the useless warranty. And that I felt now they're laughing at me even after telling them I have a special needs child who needs to be kept clean.
If you consider this product has no warranty protection really on their equipment other than 6 year inner tank 6 year parts. Well they're not even willing to send a $ 10 dollar part unless you pay a plumber's service call first. I believe the people manning the phones for this companies warranty work aren't helping the consumer and the boiler plate warranty is useless unless the tank springs a leak which is not the most likely failure. Reading other people's experience of poor service if the tank floods their home or that they complain of pilot light not staying on being a common problem (and mine also) suggests this company is laughing at their consumer's problems more than helping them resolve issues.

My husband and I built a new home and moved into it the end of August 2015. Right from the start there were issues with our hot water tank. It was leaking and it was trying to ignite about every 30 seconds. We immediately contacted the company who installed it (Jetco Mechanical) and they had several of their plumbers look at it when they came in to fix other infractions. In total they looked at it approx 4-6 different times, cleaned the filter a few times, could not figure out where the leak was and then left telling us that because of the construction going on outside we were going to have this issue until it stops. This did not seem right so we got hold of our builder and since then we have had the manufacturer rep plumbing company visit, Ye Olde Plumber.
During his two visits this plumber was able to fix the leak (this is 3 months after we moved in), he replaced all components in the tank but it still was not working properly. He then indicated that he was sent a notice by the manufacturer that was issued a while back that a specific type of filter needs to be installed to make it work. He said he would order this. He then bypassed something on the tank so that it would work and we would have hot water (Later the manufacturer told me that he had disengaged the pressure switch and this was safe practice) and left...
Two weeks later we heard nothing so I called Ye Olde Plumber... They would look into this. When we heard nothing again I decided to call the manufacturer direct. They indicated that they would look into this right away. He did what he said and we had another plumber from yet another company come and install this filter. (9 visits to date and lots of time taken off work for my husband and I). Unfortunately this filter that they added did not work and the plumber left saying that he could not fix it and left leaving us without hot water(this was on a friday).
I contacted the manufacturer right away and he said that he would send the plumber back that day but he never did show, We called our builder, Accropolis, right after this happened and he has not returned our call. We called the manufacturer and he will not return our call. We have called Jetco and they indicated that they cannot do anything. Every company that we have dealt with has told us that they cannot authorize a new hot water tank and puts the onus on one of the others... not sure where to go from here.
We really do not want to use any hot water tanks manufactured by this company anymore. They have shown their true colors and we believe their product to be poor quality and we have now experienced their horrible service. Would hate to go through issues with them again in the future. Details on the tank I am referring to: Model # PC 199-50-3NV. Product #: 0320039. Serial #: 1428T491590. See attached pictures.

Ordered an anode rod for our hot water heater from AWH. Never received any confirmation or tracking number (but they were quick to charge the credit card). After several weeks, the rod still hadn't shown up. Called AWH, and they said "well, there was a problem with UPS" (blame someone else!) By that time, we couldn't use the hot water, so we had a plumber bring the part. AWH said they would refund the money (3X what the plumber charged!) to our credit card. After 5 weeks and no sign of a refund, we called AWH. They said they had sent the credit to the cc company the day after I cancelled and that the cc company would take 4-6 weeks to post it (blame someone else!). Called the cc company - they, of course, had no record of ever receiving any credit from American Water Heater. The credit card company is handling this refund now.

On 10/3/15 (a Saturday), my in WARRANTY, American Water Heater flooded my utility room in my home. When I called the 800 number on the side of the unit, I spoke with a Lee Anne. She told me that my unit was indeed under warranty and would be covered. I proceeded to ask Lee Anne what I was supposed to do to get my unit repaired and restore hot water to my home. I was instructed by American Water Heater to call a plumber and replace the unit and mail the invoice into American Water Heater and it would be taken care of. I did EXACTLY what American Water Heater told me and called a plumber who came to my house with a new water heater, when the plumber said that I would have to pay him for the unit and the service, I contacted Lee Anne again and she told me to send the invoice with their R number to a specific PO box in Johnson City, TN.

Not having heard from anyone at American Water Heater, I called on 10/19/15 and spoke with Cinnamon who promised to resolve it and get back to me.
On 10/21/15, I contacted Paula who put me in contact with Kim ** who would look into it and get back to me. Kim has been in contact with the plumber that did the work at my home and Chris (a Team Lead) at American Water Heater. Bought unit approximately 3 years ago, 40 gallon tank --SN1028T424934. Pilot kept going out and kept relighting until it would no longer relight. We called service 4 times past month and received a replacement unit with no thermo-coupler. Upon taking it apart, the rust and time taken found that the thermo-coupler was missing. We called service and replied that only the pilot was required. For a tank with 3 years’ service causing this much aggravation, we decided to buy a new tank from another company. I was then told to drain the tank and put in a gallon of red cider vinegar, let it stay for several hours, then drain, flush, and refill the unit. I did that and the popping, rumbling, knocking sounds persist. This has been the worst experience with a product that I have ever had. Approximately five to six weeks ago, I observed the Honeywell thermostat blinking four times in one of two of my American Water Heather Co. gas water heaters. Approximately five weeks later, I observed the same four flash in the second American Water Heater Co. gas water heater. I contacted America Water Heater Co. customer service warranty and advised them of the issue. They advised that they would send out replacement thermostats for the two water heaters.
After installing them both, approximately two to three weeks later they both went out again back to back. I contacted customer service again in reference to the issue. I asked if I had flushed the water heaters prior to install, which I did. At this time, customer service advised that they could either overnight another thermostat or replace the entire water heater. Figuring that this was entirely unusual that both thermostats go out twice, I opted to have one of the water heaters replaced first. I was given a warranty exchange number and advised to contact the place of purchase, North side Plumbing Supply in Houston Texas. North Side Plumbing Supply advised that they did not have any water heaters in stock as the new water heater regulations had recently taken place and would be backordered until the end of the month. Two other distributors of American Water Heater Company water heaters in the Houston area said the same.
I contacted Customer service back and advised them of this. The customer service agent advised me that I could take to water heater to Lowe's for the exchange. After spending most of my off day today (5-11-2015) taking the first water heater out, Lowe's advised me that the exchange was only for Whirlpool water heaters. I was very upset as there was no going back, with the water heater strapped down in the bed of my truck. I contacted customer service again and spoke with ** (5-11-2015 at approximately 3:14 PM CST). I explained my situation and desperation as my two kids and wife were not going to be as understanding about the lack of hot water in the house. ** refused to help me only referring me back to the company of purchase. I advised her that no one seemed to have the water heaters in stock in the Houston area. ** continuously stated that she did not know what to tell me.
When I asked for a supervisor, desperate for a solution, ** continued to argue and talk over me while on the phone. I repeatedly asked for a supervisor and ** refused continuing to argue with me stating, "They are just going to tell you the same thing." The customer service for American Water Heater Company was extremely unprofessional and had little regard for customer service or families in need of basic hygiene. I have no idea what I am going to do at this point. The water heater is still strapped in the bed of my truck. This is a pretty bad feeling. I am very disappointed in the way that my family has been treated by American Water Heater Company and will not purchase their products in the future.

My American Water heater broke on Easter Sunday. I called a plumber the next day. He told me the Thermal Coupler needed to be replaced and to call American. I called American and asked if I could order the part since the heater's warranty had expired on 6/2014. They proceeded to ask me questions. “Where is the heater located?” I told them “in a Utility room in the bathroom.” The woman on the phone told me that my Model cannot be placed in a Bathroom at all, and that Voided the warranty or any parts. I was then asked to take pictures of the Unit in the Bathroom. I took the pictures and emailed them over. A whole day went by with no response. I called them back up. They claimed to have not received the email. I sent it to ** this time. I called him the next day, due to no response from the previous day.
I spoke with another woman who stated he was not in yet and she assured me he would look at the pictures as soon as he arrived. I received a call from ** . He told me that they cannot ship me the part because my water heater is place in the bathroom. I explained again, “it is a Utility room with a concrete floor, has 2 vents which face my family room.” He denied my request for the part. The other Woman I spoke with said it was a Hazard to have this heater in my Bathroom Utility room since the only door to get out is the bathroom. The only way around this situation was to buy a new Water Heater. I called my Plumber to start that process. I went in the bathroom and read the labels on the American heater, found a label that stated, “The American may be installed in a Bathroom if it is 8" from top and 4" from sides.”
I then called American again. I even sent ** the picture of that label. ** told me they cannot service me and my Tank is voided due to its placement. I was forced to buy a new Water Heater which is a WhiteBoard. I found out that in my Townhouse community, all 48 of us had these heater's installed. Does that mean when a part fails each one of them has to buy a new Water Heater? I asked my plumber about this and he stated their concerns do not even apply to you because my particular model is made to go into a Bathroom Closet.
American Heaters please think of the hardship you have caused families due to your labels. ** and ** both pointed out that on page 4, in the book that comes with the heaters, it states the heater's can't go in Bathroom Closets. I purchased this townhouse and did not see the book. The Label on the Units state different. I suggest they put this statement on their Website for all to see.
If it is true and these Heaters are a Hazard, this should be clearly written on their WEBSITE. I wrote this to protect homeowners about the American Water Heaters may be a HAZARD if placed in a Utility Closet in the Bathroom. My townhouse was built sometime in the 80s. The previous homeowner bought her heater in 2009, and the warranty expired in 2014. I replaced the American with a Whiteboard. God Bless.

Five months ago, I purchased a Whirlpool water heater (gas, 50-gallon, 12-year warranty) from Lowe's. Immediately I started having problems with the filter screen on my kitchen faucet plugging up with sediment in the hot water. Then my shower heads starting plugging up. I've had to turn off the water in the middle of a shower, unscrew the shower head and dump out the sediment just to get enough water pressure to rinse shampoo out of my hair. Now the filter screen for the kitchen faucet has to be emptied once a day. Over the weekend, the filter screen for the dishwasher clogged up and cost me a lot of money to have cleared by a plumber. When my wife takes a bath, over a tablespoon of sediment is left at the bottom of the tub.
So I have been calling the 877 number listed on the water heater and speaking to someone from American Water Heaters (???). They are annoyingly polite but keep telling me over and over and over again that their water heater is not defective. The problem they claim is with my water which is, supposedly, unusually acidic and attacking the standard aluminum anode in their water heater. The solution they suggest is that I buy and install at my own expense a better anode, which I can only purchase through them.
I keep telling them that water isn't the problem because none of my neighbors all of whom use the same city water supply have such a problem. None of my 20 rental condominiums in this area have such a problem, and I myself never had such a problem in 8 previous years I've lived in this house until I bought this new water heater. Meanwhile, their water heater continues to clog up my entire plumbing system and they continue to tell me their water heater is not defective.

My point is they know something is wrong and instead of fixing it, they just leave it up to us to do it. They should notify us that if we are on well water that we might need the new part.

The Heap program provided me with an American heater from Lowe's. It's been nothing but a nightmare. It makes all kinds of noises constantly and won't stay lit. It's off more than it's on sometimes up to 3 or 4 months at a time. I've contacted every number I could get my hands on and no one seems to care including the program that had it installed for me. They wouldn't even give me a number to someone higher up. I want to make it clear that I'm appreciative of the help I receive but on the other hand what a terrible waste of tax payers’ money. The plumber who installed it said the American heater from Lowe's is the only heater Heap used for this program.

I purchased a American water heater from Lowe's and have had nothing but bad luck with it. Plumber installed it and a few days later the water really smelled bad, so bad you can't be in the room with the hot water on. I called them and they said I had to buy a different anode rod so I did from them. Another plumber visit, water is still as bad. I have been told it couldn't be bad then American water heater company got really snotty about it. I'm going to try one more time then I'm going to sue them and Lowe's over this.

We had a 40-gal Propane Gas American Water Heater installed by a plumber in July of 2011. Initial performance was OK, though not perfect but the heater is in the garage the full length of the house from the master bath so I attributed the deficiency to the length of plumbing in crawl space. Winter was worse, but again I blamed it on the plumbing. Then over the past year the performance has slowly deteriorated. It seemed to provide about a tankful of hot water, then lukewarm, then cold over a 10-12 minute period. I have 30+ years in facility maintenance, including a major military base with over 2,000 units of family housing (and that many "residential" type water heaters) so I first suspected that the thermostat/valve was to blame.
Called American and was told that they would reimburse for locally purchased repair parts so I wouldn't have to wait and also pay shipping. Sounds good, right? Not so fast. No one here in middle Tennessee stocks a replacement for the Robertshaw Unitrol valve they use. Did get a newer electronic valve only to find a non-match to the thermocouple (new one uses a wired thermopile). Returned the valve. Did they have the right kind of thermopile? -- No. (Good thing because it turns out the whole access door is a manufactured assembly and it wouldn't have worked anyway.)
Studied American's parts diagrams and lists online and called American back. Verified that the two wires from the Tstat/valve were for a hi-temp cutout. That seemed to explain the way it was performing if the cutout was tripping and then took a while to cool down and reset. Explained that to the lady at American and she asked if I had called a plumber. Said, yes, I had one out twice already and this was our joint thought. Can't just get a new cutout, gotta get a whole assembly but they would provide (as long as I paid shipping). OK, how about that assembly, a new burner, and a new thermostat/valve? Nope, will only ship one part at a time. Oh, so I can pay for overnight shipping three times potentially. Yup. Ok, charge me for shipping and send the assembly. Got plumber back and everything re-assembled. Seemed to be working and then ... everything shuts down -- pilot is out, will not relight and hold.
Five days without hot water and possibly two more for one more part and two more for another and maybe $60+ more shipping? No thank you. Went to Lowe's and thank goodness they didn't have an LP unit in stock because I now have learned that American makes the Whirlpool brand as well (Lowe’s is stocking almost nothing labeled American so perhaps they have gotten the brunt of complaints as well, but if what you stock is the same underneath, standby!). Two major plumbing supply house also did not have an LP unit in stock. Went to Home Depot and found a 50 gal Rheem LP gas unit. Called a third plumbing supply and they also had a 50 gal LP but at a higher price so I bought the one at Home Depot.
Got plumber back for third trip and replaced the American with the Rheem -- fit perfectly height-wise for the flue and all the water and gas connections. Have checked the reviews on the Rheem units and aside from one negative one that Rheem responded to and said, "Call us. We want to make this right for you.", all the rest were highly positive. The litany of bad experience makes me say without hesitation, DO NOT buy an American Water Heater or one made by them and branded by someone else like Whirlpool. They are junk and the warranty is weak.

We have vacation home in N.C. which has a American power vent heater. When we went down there at Christmas time the water heater was not working. Contacted a local plumber to look at and he called American on the problem we were having. They told us it needed a new control valve which cost 271 dollars with next day delivery. Installed new valve next day and the valve was bad. We called back American and told them what the problem was.
They told the plumber they would send a new valve but would not there until Friday because of New Years. Wednesday I called American to see who was going to pay the plumber for Tuesday work on heater when it was there fault the valve was bad. They told me that when the second valve was installed to have the plumber call them and work out a deal. Got the new valve on Friday and installed it and still did not work. Plumber calls American on the problem and woman says if you would have talked to me I would have suggested to send another part with it, which would have a another 50 dollar's.
Now here's the problem I have now, American won't give any money back to me because the valves were installed. B.S. DON'T BUY AMERICAN OR WHIRLPOOL. Very disappointed I've spent over 650 dollar's on a water heater and still don't have one.

My plumber installed an American Water Heater 12/14/2012 for $4999.50. On 12/28/14 water began pouring out of the bottom. We called our (former) plumber to ask about warranty coverage and he hung up. Researching further, I find that American Water Heaters used commercially have a 1 year warranty (my new water heater has a 3 year warranty on the glass tank). I can see why American's warranty coverage is shorter. If American is using inferior parts to make more money, then covers themselves by making their warranty period super short, the savings to consumers is offset by water heaters that may fail in 2 years. I'll never buy an American Water Heater again!

In April of 2011, I contacted American Water heater regarding my leaking water heater. I had purchased this water heater in 2005 and had a 9-year warranty on the water heater. American reluctantly told me to find another water heater and call them once I had done it. I went to Lowe's and selected a Whirlpool water heater manufactured by American Water Heater. I was then told I had to return the old water heater to Lowe's and then I could get the new water heater. At no time did American tell me that the remaining warranty on the old water heater would be transferred to the new one even though the new water heater has a 12 year warranty. I received nothing in writing and was not told this by anyone at American. This morning the water heater that was installed in my home on April 9, 2011 began to leak and will not heat water. I called American and was told that the warranty on my previous water heater had transferred to the new one and my warranty ended in August 2014. They diagnosed the issue with the water heater over the phone and tried to sell me a part for $153.50. I complained and asked to speak to a manager.
A manager called me back and apologized for their deceitful and dishonest practices but she was not willing to do more than that. Do not purchase Whirlpool/American Water heater products because they are not reliable. I was told this by a plumber who says that they are the worst water heaters on the market. I filed a complaint with the attorney general in my state. I am not sure what they will do but I plan to tell everyone who will listen to avoid this company.

Any replacement thermocouple that says "universal" on it will not work even with their "adapter" in the package. You can ONLY order the conversion kit and thermocouple from Whirlpool's parts people at 18778176750. And it goes from being an $8-12 part to a $35 part with shipping costs. Since it's the 3rd of December, and we really could use some hot water, that means it's a $30 overnight shipping cost. Rat bastards who give not a ** about the problem. My hot water heater was installed approx 4 years ago. A year ago I have been having problems with the module not allowing me to change the temperature of the heat, as well as the unit itself would not properly stay on when it attempted to heat the water. Then to top it all off every time I had a plumber come and attempt to fix the problem, once the hot water heater began filling the tank, it would build so much pressure, the pressure relief valve would dump water all over the place. I live on a concrete slab so my hot water heater is in a closet in the hallway. My hallway floors are now ruined and I have had to put in a claim to my homeowners ins which in turn will wind up raising my premiums. Thank god American has finally (a year later) resolved to replacing the existing hot water heater for a new one. Though, because they do not cover labor costs for the new install I much shell out $650 for the new unit!. Maybe I should sue! I pray that I will not have the same problems with the new one!. I will be installing tile flooring in the hallway so that if this happens again.....Tile floor does not warp!. DO NOT BUY THESE PRODUCTS IF YOU HAVE THE CHOICE!!!

I purchased a Whirlpool Brand 50-gal electric water heater from Lowe's on 13 July 2014 and had it installed by an experienced contractor (he was not a licensed plumber but I observed the install). Shortly after install, 1 day there was water on the floor at the heater. I thought it might a spill from the install but it continued to leak. After checking for leaks at both water connections, both heating elements, over temp/pressure and finding nothing, I contacted American and received a #RA.
I then went back to Lowe's for a second identical tank and installed it. The result was the same as before, a leak. I again contacted American and was issued another #RA and returned to Lowe's. After uninstalling the second tank before returning it to Lowe's, I removed the bottom cap. It revealed a rust stain which was NOT adjacent to any normal opening in the tank.
Lowe's again traded for a new tank but this time with an upgraded model. The result has been the same, a leak even though it is slower (took 24 hours to show). In each install, I used my own contractor and observed everything. The leaks are not the result of a faulty install!!!!! Someone needs to get their act together here. You have been warned.

I purchased a water heater from American Water Heater Company about 8 years ago. It failed. On July 22, a new water htr. was installed and it failed within 2 hours. The warranty covers parts only. The cost for install of #2 was $789.50. American Water Htr. then insisted that there be diagnostic work done on water htr #2 to the tune of $225 before they would do anything. They agreed to replace it (#3) and I have a bill for $1073.30 (including the $225.00). My tenants notified me on July 25 that the water heater wasn't working properly. They left town for a week and returned August 4th. Since that date, I have been trying to resolve the problem with American Water Heater @ 1-800-999-9515. They told me earlier this week that they wouldn't discuss this current problem until I sent them the bills for the previous 2 installations as I thought they should pay something.
They offered $175 of the $1872.xx bill ($225 of services of which they demanded from my supplier before they would authorize #3 water heater). I have paid Innovative Comfort Systems their bill as they did the work. Their charges are for labor only as the water heaters were covered by the American Water Heater warranty. However, my current problem is that Water heater #3 still isn't working and AWH is now demanding that I pay ICS their fees to go out and diagnose the problem once again before they will decide whether or not they will replace this defective water heater. There goes another $225 most likely and another $680 fee if the water htr company agrees it is bad. In essence, I would then have about $2800 in install charges just trying to get my tenants consistent hot water.
My maintenance guy or I have spoken to Leona, Chris, ADA, Keith, Nicole, Leslie among others. None of these employees are willing to do anything and they refuse to allow me to speak to a higher manager in Customer Service. All documents requested were sent to Chelsea and yet no one at the company is willing to solve my issue. Their response: "I'm sorry you are having problems. My water heater tank began leaking within the manufacturer's 6 year warranty period. Determined to take advantage of the warranty, I spent 2 days making phone calls and exchanging emails before I was finally able to get a 'no-customer service rep' from AWH to issue me an RMA for a replacement. Since the company only sells direct to wholesale distributors, who only deal direct with licensed plumbers, my next challenge was to find a way to actually get my hands on a new unit. Since the plumbing company that replaced my tank 5 years ago is no longer in business, the AWH representative provided me with a list of plumbing companies that I could contact in my area that do sell/install the brand. It was a broken record from every company that I contacted, we "no longer carry" or "never did carry" that brand of water heater. Not a single one of them have even heard of the brand. After some additional phone calls and research, I eventually found out that the distributor that would have sold this brand to the plumbing companies also no longer carries the brand. 5 days of a leaking water heater had passed before I got to this point.
I contacted AWH the next morning to inquire on what my options now were. AMH also manufactures the Whirlpool brand. I asked the rep to issue the RMA to allow me to go to my local big box store to pick up a tank under that name. She chuckled at that, stating that the AMH brand was their wholesale brand and there is no way that they could replace it for a Whirlpool. I was told that I could pay $190 to have a new one shipped to me or I could take the pro-rated credit. Seeing that their credit was only $150, paying the insane $190 for shipping seemed to me to be a better deal. Once I stated my intention to have them ship me a new one, I was yet again placed on a long hold. The rep came back to the phone to state that their company was going through some changes right now and that they wouldn't be able to even order me one for at least a few days and that I should call back 6 days from today to get one on order. She mentioned that them drop-shipping a water heater is always the absolute last resort for AWH. She also stated that if they were able to order me a new unit in the next 6 days, it would take several weeks before I would see it - are you fricken kidding me!
After several obvious frustrated questions and rightly feeling like I was getting blown off, I asked to speak to her manager. The manager flat out refused to talk to me and the rep eventually cut me off mid-sentence to say that someone else will contact me "sometime tomorrow". This experience has been an exhaustive nightmare! There is no way that I will ever buy another Whirlpool product again knowing who the manufacturer is and what horrible support they provide.

I purchased a standard gas powered water heater from American Water Heater with a 6 year warranty. The heater failed in 7 years. The problem is simple, a failure in the electric gas feed regulator that results in the stop of all gas flow.
Pros: It appears to have failed in a "safe" way - no gas flow.
Cons: But there is no repair path - not because of the specific component that failed, but rather because this heater was designed such that even replacing the simplest component will cost almost as much as getting a new heater installed. Given that design, a 7 year life cycle is WAY TOO SHORT for an appliance like a water heater.

This unit has the discontinued left-hand threads, found nowhere else, so forced to order it from the manufacturer. I rigged a right-hand unit (by filing off the threads & placing it precariously in there as a temp fix), and called US Craftmaster. I thought since they had been in a major lawsuit, I might be sent a free replacement. If not, no worries, I'll pay the $15 or so since I jury-rigged it so we have hot water till the true replacement arrives. Called (surprisingly open on the Saturday before Easter) & ordered the piece, only to find out it has been discontinued. Now, they sell (possibly) a regular right-hand threaded thermocouple, with a left-to-right adapter for the bargain price of $34.95! I opted for the cheapest delivery of $10, instead of the $30 overnight delivery offered (which many people will fall prey to, as they don't have the know-how to rig a temp fix - we need hot water!).

This model was not cheap, in fact it was significantly higher priced than the others we were initially considering (around $660.00). It worked fine for the first few years, but has been a continual annoyance for the past several years. My husband has to go and reset the mode switch, sometimes several times a day or we won't have hot water. It is a real bummer to turn on the shower in the morning and discover it is running cold.
Even though still within our warranty period, we can't find all the necessary paperwork to submit a claim, and after reading about the similar woes of other customers, it hardly seems worth it to deal with this company. After going on internet and diagnosing the thermocouple on my American Water Heater as bad by testing the thermocouple with a meter, I then tried to replace the LEFT-THREADED thermocouple. I could not find the right one, so again I go on the internet and found that AWH used left-threaded thermocouple for three years before a class-action lawsuit stopped the practice. Until I went on the internet and found this information, I was unaware of it and had not received notification about the replacement kit.
The website for AWH did have a phone number and they were very helpful when I called. Since the water heater was still under its 12-year warranty, they did supply the conversion kit for free; however, two-day delivery service did require my forking over $32.00 for shipping and handling, which I felt they should have paid since it was the design defect of the piece that caused a problem and was supposed to have been replaced as part of the lawsuit.
Fortunately, I am rather handy at doing things myself, or else getting a plumber or gas technician to do the work for me would cost around $100.00, for which the company of course doesn't offer to pick up the bill. Hopefully when the parts arrive, it will prove to be as easy as the internet seems to make it sound to replace it, and I will have hot water again! If not, I will post again and let you know how displeased I am, and if the company resolved my problem with having to pay to have a plumber or gas technician to do the conversion for me.

When I moved into my house in 2012 I found an American Water Heater Company water heater, model #FG6140T403NOV in the basement. It was manufactured late 2003, installed by a plumber in 2005, and used for four years in a ONE-person household before I got to it in 2012 (no one lived there for three years). It is now mid-2013 and the pilot light has gone out. After many cold showers, some tomfoolery and a $120 plumber visit, the pilot will light but not stay lit - the plumber confirmed it's a bad thermocouple. A bad, LEFT-THREADED thermocouple.
It turns out AWH used left-threaded thermocouple for three years before a class-action lawsuit stopped the practice. AWH says they contacted all registered owners under warranty and sent them a replacement kit with a thermocouple adapter. My heater obviously did not get the replacement kit. Oh, and you can't just buy a universal thermocouple for $8 and get the thermocouple adapter - you have to order an entire door manifold assembly from AWH. When you're without hot water for your shower, it puts you on edge. You want your hot water ASAP. AWH charges $34.99 for the "thermocouple retrofit kit" and $30 for next-day shipping, plus tax - about $70 and one-two days for what would have otherwise been $8 and a trip to Menard's/Home Depot.
The plumber I called out and everyone I've talked to was amazed that someone would put a left-threaded thermocouple on a water heater. The plumber tried to be polite about it but was really frustrated with the design of the front panel - and after taking it apart myself, so am I. It's very difficult to unscrew the nuts because of the shoddy design, and the plumber and I both got cut on the very sharp edge of the main gas supply. If you search online you'll also find a wealth of complaints about various parts failing prematurely and additional design flaws.
I ordered the retrofit kit from Lowe's for $58 (with next-day shipping - that was $19.99). This is just to provide enough hot water to wash the stink of American Water Heater off of me until my new water heater is installed next week. I'm a young first time homeowner with a lot of houses in my future - and none of them will ever use an American Water Heater product again.

My plumber installed the part but could not get the WH pilot to light. Of course, AWHC was closed by then (i.e. after 10pm), so I had to wait till the next day. It was determined that I needed a gas valve/thermostat (GVT), which was sent and arrived the next day.
My plumber installed it and got the pilot to light, but it would not stay lit. On my next call to AWHC (again, after having to wait till the next day), the rep. asserted that the WH was improperly vented. I asked why the WH would work for 2 yrs. if that were true, so I was able to get a second GVT sent. My plumber installed it, and I had hot water for about 12 hours, then the WH quit again. I am having my own American Water Heater nightmare right now. Long story short, both my AWH water heaters (installed in parallel) went out last Friday. In both cases, the pilot would simply not stay lit. After calling Customer Service, they sent me the pilot/thermopile assemblies for both tanks. They arrived Monday. I installed one, tried it, and it didn't work. Exactly the same problem. I called again. The rep indicates he will send the control box for the tank in which I replaced the pilot assembly, but he would not send it for the other tank until I replaced the pilot assembly. I argued with him to no avail.
It is logical that if both went at the same time and replacing the pilot assembly in one wouldn't fix it, it wouldn't fix the other. His answer: "not necessarily". So, he preferred to continue wasting my time and an unnecessary replacement part that to help fixing the problem. Of course, I went ahead and replaced the pilot assembly in the second water heater. Guess what? It didn't work. So now I am trying to contact them again to get the box for the second heater. Oh! And of course, they send you the part, but either you have to install it or spend the money to have it installed by a technician. Let me understand that: their crappy product went out after only 18 months of use, and I have to pay to fix it. Conclusion: stay away from this shoddy brand!

I am a licensed plumbing contractor. For 15 years I had installed another brand, which was completely reliable. One of my suppliers started carrying American Pro Line and were telling me how great they were, so I started installing them for a period of about 2 years. One of the worst decisions I have ever made as a contractor. The American Pro Line water heaters started using a Honeywell gas control valve. On many of my customers' water heaters, these valves would stop working within a few months. Others stopped working after the first year. Their warranty is parts and labor for the first year, but parts only on the 2nd-6th years. So in many cases, I have had to make several service calls to get my customers' water heater working and have lost time and money in doing so. For a few customers, there have been repeated problems to the extent that we replaced the whole gas control valve with a new one up to three times and still continued to have problems.
American Water Heaters has tried to blame the problem on my customers' gas pressure in one case. At another customer's house, after several attempts to repair the American water heater, we installed another brand at that house since the American water heater kept giving us problems. This other brand of heater also had a Honeywell gas control valve, but there have been no problems with it since it was installed almost a year ago. In that particular case, the homeowner was very upset that the water heater would not stay lit after several failed attempts by the warranty service company trying to repair it that we uninstalled the American water heater and put a new Bradford White water heater in only 11 months later. American Water Heater refused to give my plumbing supplier credit on the returned water heater.
After several months of trying to get the credit issued, American Water Heaters would only agree to giving me (through my supplier) a replacement unit with the warranty prorated (so it is already nearly 2 years into the warranty). So I am left with a water heater I cannot sell because it doesn't even have a full warranty (and therefore is a parts only warranty). I am out over $400. I have switched back to Bradford White water heaters. I have several other examples of issues with other customer's water heaters. I am still currently dealing with one unit for another home owner, which keeps going out. The homeowner is being patient, but neither the customer nor I should have to deal with a water heater that was just installed 10 months ago already requiring a 3rd service call to get it to work.

I bought a home 2 years ago in 2011. The previous homeowner bought an American Water Heater in 2004 with a 12-year warranty. The warranty has a clause stating that the warranty only applies to the original purchaser. Now I have had several problems in the last year with keeping the pilot lit. I've had thermal couplers replaced (twice) and had replaced a valve, and it is still routinely malfunctioning. I called up AWH and (stupidly) told them I wasn't the original purchaser. They just told me to try a couple of things and nothing worked. They recommended a new gas valve. I said, “I want repair work done under warranty.” They said, "Sorry, we won't honor the warranty because you weren't the original purchaser."
I told them that this is just a greedy money-saving slimy business practice. Even if the homeowner sold the house a week after installing the water heater, they won't honor their warranty to the new purchaser. What purpose does it serve to conduct your business that way? Its only purpose is to save money and because they can do it. Their mindset is, "Well, the original purchaser isn't going to care about this and not buy the water heater, because it only screws over the next guy. It doesn't affect the person who bought it, so let's cut off the warranty on the product as quickly as possible." They think they can make some cost-cutting measure like this without consequences, because they got nothing from me directly. But I bought this house and everything in it, and I paid for it including a water heater that came with a warranty.
I spoke to 3 customer service people and a supervisor. The supervisor just says, "That’s what the warranty says." He even says he understands how I feel and it recently happened to him on something he bought! Yet he says they "can't" do anything. I said, “No, you can; but you won't.” I told them that they are forgetting that when I have to buy a new water heater someday, it won't be from American Water Heater. They don't stand behind their products. They made their choice and that's the consequences. Don’t buy American Water Heaters!

We have an American water heater & the pilot light went out Sunday night. My husband looked all over town Monday evening for the part that needed to be replaced (thermo reset switch), only to come up empty handed. Tuesday morning, I called around to local plumbers to see if they knew where I could find the part & one told me that American wasn't in our area anymore. So, I called American & they said they could overnight the part for $30 so I ordered it (it is still under warranty so I only had to pay for shipping). Well, we got the part Wednesday morning & it was the wrong part, so my husband called back & they sent another one, which we got Friday morning & again it's the wrong part. When my husband called back they told him that it was my fault the first part was wrong because I gave the wrong serial number; however, they had no explanation as to why a second wrong part was sent.
When I ordered the original part, I did give the wrong serial # at first. But when the service rep I was talking to told me what water heater that serial # pulled up, I told her it was the wrong water heater & then gave her the right serial #, which pulled up the right water heater. But they still sent a part for the wrong water heater even though I did give the correct serial #. My husband spoke to a service rep & a supervisor yesterday & the supervisor told my husband it was my fault that the wrong part was sent & he knew this because he listened to the recording of my conversation. But he never mentioned that I did give the right serial after I gave the wrong one. So the supervisor either didn't listen to the entire recording or conveniently left that part out.
My husband called again today (Saturday) to find out if we we’re getting the new part today. The service rep he talked to was rude & said we wouldn't be getting it until Monday & he should know this because the supervisor had noted that he told my husband this (the supervisor never said anything like this to my husband, he just kept saying he couldn’t do anything to help & that it’s my fault for ordering the wrong part).
I have a 2 & 3 year old & I will not have hot water for 9 days on Monday. I have had to boil water on my stove to give my kids baths & to wash dishes & for my husband & I to take baths, & we went through Thanksgiving without hot water. When my husband told this to the various service reps we've talked to, they all say the same thing, which is, that it's my fault the first part was the wrong part & they can't do anything to help us.
Now we know why American is no longer in our area & as soon as we can afford to, we are getting rid of our American water heater & going with a brand that has no affiliation with American whatsoever! Absolutely the worst service experience we've ever had with anyone we've ever dealt with! If we get another wrong part on Monday, I don't know what we will do, because I can't keep going without hot water, not with two small children.

We were told this water heater was under a class action lawsuit. More bad news was yet to come. He told us the water heater was not even installed to code. The pilot light on my American Water Heater would not stay lit. The plumber we called checked and saw that the model I had was involved in a class action lawsuit because of that issue and suggested I call their 800 number. I explained the problem to the rep who answered and asked her what I could do. She said I needed a certain part to fix the problem but my unit was out of warranty so I'd have to purchase it. I paid for it and when it arrived had the plumber back out to install it for me. The problem did not get resolved with that part so we replaced the water heater. I called them back and asked where to send the part back for a refund. She informed me that since we had installed the piece on my unit, it was considered used and could not be returned. She said that there was a second part that I should purchase to see if it would fix the problem.
I explained that I'd already been two weeks without hot water and went ahead and replaced the unit. All I wanted was a refund for the part. She said there was nothing they would do for me. They had never explained that refunds were not permitted nor did the first tech mention that there was likely a 2nd part needed to fix the problem. I have stopped payment on my purchase debit and am waiting to hear how the claim is resolved with my bank. You would think that a company who was the target of a class action lawsuit would be more forthcoming about the steps needed to resolve the problem and then more sympathetic and accommodating when their recommended resolution to the problem doesn't work.

I dunno how to do this shout-out. Some 11 years ago, I bought a top-of-the-line Maytag gas water heater at Home Depot Pro. Fast forward to the recent past. It started leaking! I buy the best possible water heater, and it leaks and generally dies on us. We went to Lowe's, shopping for another water heater. The guy there told me to call and see if I might be able to get some sort of warranty help. Well, it took a while, the better part of an afternoon. But I got the right person on the line, and presto! I now have at zero cost to me a brand-new, top-of-the-line Whirlpool water heater. Lowe's was the place I was sent to. I was firmly instructed that I must bring the old one, as they wanted to pull it apart and see how it failed to ensure that gets fixed.
Between the Maytag / Whirlpool confusing me, the Home Depot / Lowe's confusing me, and so on, it was a bit of a wild ride. But still, there really is such a thing as customer service. There are makers, which are genuinely interested in providing quality products and truly standing behind them. That new unit would have been $707.09. It wasn't fun, but it could have been far more painful. I believe the maker of both of these water heaters is American Water Heater.

However, last week the pilot light went out. We had a plumber come out and look at the unit. He cleaned and inspected the unit. At that time he noticed that the thermocouple was a left-handed thread and that it could be the problem. However, he was able to get the heater fired up and waited about 30 minutes before leaving. When I checked on it that evening, I noticed the pilot was out again. I finally called to get a replacement part. After being charge $33.00 for expedited shipping, I found out that the part was on backorder! I spoke with Sears parts (I guess they are affiliated with American) and was told that I would receive a credit (they would not answer what kind of credit). The part was not a thermocouple but a BFG conversion kit. I started researching this converter kit and found out it was driven by a class action lawsuit (even though I had to pay $102.00 total). Further research pushed me to calling up a local plumbing company and buying a new hot water heater (a Bradford). I would rather shell out the extra for a safe, new product, than take a chance on a conversion kit that might fix the issue (Is the redesign even UL certified?)

I can add to the list of complaints regarding the water heater, customer service, and company policies. My heater went out three days ago. When I called to inquire about how the warranty process works, a male customer rep immediately told me to have a plumber call them, period. End of discussion. This man did not want to talk to me (a female). It was a 2-minute call where I got no information, just irritation. So the next day, I had a plumber over who did call the company as directed, and this time, the female customer rep. was willing to talk with me!
When all was said and done, she said they'd send out a new heater because of the warranty, but that I would have to pay the $130 shipping charge because nobody in my area of CA carries American Water Heater products. I called back again today to ask them to pay for shipping because what good is a warranty if, in the end, I have to pay $130 for shipping, $130 for new CA regulations, and $250 to have it installed? I want them to at least pay for the shipping. I spoke with a male rep. who insisted on speaking over me when I was trying to explain my position, and after the third time of this, I asked to speak with a supervisor. He didn't want to connect me, talked over me again, and when I told him he was rude he called me a ** and hung up on me! Wow.
I called back right away (connected with a female rep.), said I wanted to speak with a supervisor who called me 15 min. later. She said they would look into it and remained firm about not paying for my shipping. She sounded like she was maybe 18 years old and didn't want to give me her last name, so I think she was not an actual supervisor. So much for buying American, folks. I think I'll go with a Chinese company with better customer service in the future. Don't buy any of this company's faulty products! After a year or so, I began having to relight the pilot every now and then. Throughout the years, it had to be lit more often until 02/09/2012, it wouldn't stay lit at all. I had asked someone at Lowe's and a plumber about the problem and was told it was probably the wind blowing it out. I live in a dessert community and it gets windy, so I took their word for it. Also, Whirlpool said to clean the screen on the bottom of the heater. It still didn't stay lit. On 02/13/2012, I contacted the person who originally installed it and we called Whirlpool. I was told to go to Lowe's and the part we needed was an "F" enhancement kit and would be of no charge to me. I went there and they didn't have it. I called back Whirlpool and they shipped it to me.
My installer changed the part, but the pilot still wouldn't stay lit. Again, I called Whirlpool. I was told to go to Lowe's and get part #295098, a BFG gas thermostat. I got there and the clerk told me they didn't have it. I said, "you have to have it, go look again". He had the part. However, I didn't have the P10144500 number with me and I would have to pay for the part. I went back home for the number. Throughout this ordeal, I made 4 trips and my installer made one trip to Lowe's. I would think if Lowe's sells Whirlpool products, they would have more information and parts available. I always bought Whirlpool appliances and trusted their name. Not after this. I believe this product was bad from design and assembly, especially using a left-handed thermocouple.
This was the 13th day I have been without hot water and I hope my heater stays lit now that it's fixed. I have never had problems with a water heater like this before. I am a single woman, age 71 and have been very stressed over this. My income isn't enough to pay plumbers for this again.

However, it was after hours so it was actually going to take 2 days to get to us. When that part arrived and we carefully followed the instructions to install (we have remodeled many houses so we are not a novice) the part was damaged and did not work. We called back and they told us they would send another part but of course it was after hours again and it would be 2 more days.
When the part did not arrive, we called back a third time and were told that order did not exist but they would order it again. By this time we are in the middle of the Christmas holiday so we are waiting three days. Last night, I called a fourth time and we reordered the part again. I have had thermocouple problems like crazy. One time they put the wrong one in, another they didn't realize the thread was opposite and cross threaded it. And that unit was on the first floor of a 2-story building! Flames were shooting up through the venting pipe to the 2nd story! We disconnected the unit and removed it from the apartment. I purchased the American Water Heater Proline in 2005. In 2008, the igniter/thermocouple went out. It took 4 days to get a warranty replacement unit. It was free, but there's cost to put in, in a 3 year old unit. I was told there was a factory defect and this kit would fix it. Three years later (warranty about to expire), the "kit" did the same thing. Another 4 days, I was without water while waiting for another kit. Do not buy their water heaters. They suck! Now I have to pay another $200 for a plumber to fix it. That means I have to use cold water for days. I have 4 properties. I had water heaters all my life. I never had such a bad experience. They dare put an American Flag on it and tout how well made it is. It is no wonder China is taking over. Stay away from this company!

American Gas Hot Water Heater Model FG6130T303NOV Serial# 0509128959 Product 0731307 pilot will not stay lit. On 2/4/11, I called American Water Heater and they said a voluntary recall was on the Manifold Door Switch and this hot water heater is registered with them and was still under warranty. I never received any information on a recall! Portsmouth Plumbing replaced the switch which was under warranty, but the labor of $125.00 was not. I have had to call American Water heater several times because the pilot will not stay lit.
There is a white reset (this is not the red reset pilot button) that goes from the switch wires to the hot water heater that they let me push and hold. Then, they let me follow the instructions on the hot water heater or the "use and care guide book". This little white button is not in the book or on the hot water heater instructions. My vent on the water heater stays clean and the ventilation is good. I cannot ever get the pilot to light until I called them and then they instructed me to hold the white button for so long, then reset or something else, which this is not how the manual tells me to.
It has gone out again tonight and they are closed after 9 pm. I do have a carbon monoxide detector (electric, so the batteries are not bad as American Water heater would say). Well, it does have low readings when the light goes out. This happens at least once a month and it is still under warranty and I am tired of them telling me to just relight the pilot.

I purchased your product, serial#0434126381, model fg121-40s40-3nomv in 2005. There were no problems until last night when the thermocoupler went out. I called a local plumber/technician who installed but he died 2 years ago. A local plumber tried to install a new coupler and found the unit had a reverse thread, I had to call several supply houses in the nearest city and finally found someone who told him that this unit was part of a voluntary recall because of the thermocoupler and the reverse threads. He had to drive 30 minutes to get a new unit and came back with an entirely new burner assembly with a new safety switch.
Okay, that was great and the warehouse didn't charge him for the part as he returned the old burner assembly to them. My complaint is that I got charged for 2 hours of labor at 100/hour for him to figure out what was wrong, get the new part, and return the old part for warranty reimbursement. If your company knew there was a problem, particularly with the reverse threads if the coupler went out, why hasn't the public been notified so repairs could have been made while under warranty? If you buy a car and there is a recall there is no charge for parts or labor even if the warranty has expired, and they notify the consumer to avoid this concern.
To say the least, I am very disappointed in American Water heater and the fact that I had to pay $200 for labor, that had we been notified there was a problem, I would have had fixed while under full warranty. This is not a good way to run your customer service. I talked with 2 different phone representatives, and they told me that was the way it was and there was no one else to talk to about this issue. To say the least, when we buy another unit or another property, you can be sure I will check to see that American water heaters are not part of the future package for what I perceive as poor customer service.

The pilot light will not stay lit. I installed the conversion kit and months later, it goes out again. I contacted the gas company to verify that there were no venting issues. After that was proved to be good, the technician determined that the thermo couple was faulty. I was shocked, considering I just replaced the conversion kit not long ago! I then contacted American to demand for a new unit. Well, that ended up being another hassle as the unit was not a retail purchase and could not be taken to a local Home Depot or Lowe's for the exchange. I then had to contact a wholesaler who carried the product that was willing to do the exchange. This has truly been a trying 9 months, and I got no support from American in making this an easy, warrantable transaction. I have nothing good to say about their product; and I advise anyone in the market for a water heater to look away from American products and go with another manufacturer.

I installed an American Water Heater on 12-28-09. The pilot going out all the time is a nuisance, but easy enough to light.
On 12-4, the water heater quit. This time the pilot was on. I called American Water Heater to arrange a service call. After going through their diagnostic process, and 3 hours later, they would not set up a service call. They initially told me that my flue was the problem and I would have to get that fixed before they would send a service technician.
I paid a plumber to come out and check. He said, "Oh, American Water Heater. I know a lot of people who have had issues with this company." I knew then I had made a bad purchase. He said good luck, their customer service people are hard to deal with. I told him I was already aware of that. He looked at it and said, "Yup, the gas valve is bad. See I can wiggle the thermostat and it kicks on. I will check your flue though.” He took the venting all apart, went up on the roof and pulled the rain cap just so I could prove to American Water Heater there were no issues with the venting.
I asked him if he would go ahead and repair it and he said, "I’m sorry but I don’t want to be married to this piece of **. Please call the American Water Heater company and see if they have a company that is willing to work on it.” I did. And after several calls, the supervisor finally agreed to set up a service call with A&E Factory Service.
The technician was very polite, nice and replaced the valve. Guess what, hot water! But not for long. On 12-24-10, the water heater went out again. Same issue, I can wiggle the knob and get the water heater to kick on. This time, I called and asked for the supervisor, went through the same process, and the lady on the phone wanted me to disconnect the burner assembly and take it out. I said you have got to be kidding me. I’m no plumber. You know what the problem is, please order me a gas valve and send a repairman. By this time I was in tears after spending 4 hours of phone time and I was begging her to just send a service man with a gas valve as it was the same problem.
I finally got the same moron supervisor on the phone again and he informed me that he was not going to send me another valve. I would just have to go without hot water. I could not believe this. I informed him in just a few days it was out of warranty.
Needless to say, it is now out of warranty. This morning, once again there was no hot water. I can wiggle the thermostat and it will come on for about a minute, then off. I cannot believe this company is still in business. So, I’m guessing I will just buy a different brand water heater and hope that a class action law suit comes up against this company. Poor customer service agents, no customer service skills, company will not stand behind their product and they refused to repair the water heater when it was still within the warranty period.

American Proline water heater left handed thermocouple water heater repair kit. I have an American water heater that quit working. I called their customer support in which I was notified that I needed an "upgrade kit." This kit is to be mailed out which leaves my family without hot water in the middle of December. She then stated that I could install this myself and there was nothing to it.
Then, I get on their site and it says in bold red print, removal and replacement of the gas control valve/thermostat involves the disconnection of gas piping, manifold tube, pilot tube and thermocouple. It is recommended that this procedure be performed by a qualified service technician. Now, I'm fairly handy but I also would not consider the changes of gas lines, burners, etc. as a simple procedure that a homeowner should be advised to do themselves followed up by a red, bold warning on their website. What happens to elderly people that take the advise of the custom service rep and does not have access to this online info?
Also, if there has been a lawsuit filed against these people for this, why are they not paying for the "upgrade kit" and installation? Where is the accountability? If I were to put someone on their family in harm's way, wouldn't the laws be enforced on me?

I will join the many others who have complained about American Water Heaters! We moved into a new home in 2006 and had a new 50 gal propane AWH. It was good for about 2 years then it would stop working and we'd go through the relighting nightmares to no avail. Our plumber ended up coming out 5 times within the next year and replaced virtually every removable part! Then, it still stopped working again.
I called the company and raised hell and they finally authorized me to get a replacement. That was about 5 months ago. Last Saturday we found that, once again, we had no hot water! Thus began the same nightmare of trying to light it only to have it either run for maybe 15 minutes and then shut off, or the pilot would not stay lit at all! I called the company again.
What they didn't tell me is that their local authorized repair place does not carry parts for a propane water heater and the person on the phone should have sent me out the necessary part when I called, but they didn't. So, the repairman came out and could not fix it. So now my family has to wait two more days without hot water and hope that the part they are sending (gas valve) is the problem. According to my plumber when it fails to stay running or lit it is always a bad gas valve not a thermocouple (although I've had those replaced and the unit worked briefly!) I am not a fan of that company!

September 2, 2010 a second trouble call was made with the same complaint as the earlier call that the water tank pilot could not be lighted. On September 2, 2010, the same technician replaced the thermal switch again. On September 7, the same technician also replaced the thermo couple wire. Since that date, the water tank has been found without a pilot light at least four consecutive weekends. The pilot was light, but will not maintain the flame.
On October 25, 2010, another service call was made to Igor, who attempted to troubleshoot over the phone suggesting that the air intake or exhaust was inadequate and that I should use a match to check the exhaust air and clean under the unit when returning to the farmhouse this coming weekend. Every complaint I've read here is true based on my experience.
In May of 2009, I had purchased a home and as a condition for the sale, the old leaking water heater needed to be replaced (the bank I received the loan from would not approve the loan unless the water heater was replaced). Later that month, JJ Plumbing Co. installed a new gas 40 gal. American Water Heater. In September of 2009, the pilot went out on the water heater. I had called The Gas Co. out thinking the gas had been turned off. On September 30, The Gas Co. relight the pilot on the water heater. The pilot on the water heater went out again a couple of weeks later, so I relit the pilot. This happened a few more times before I finally called the number on the water heater to explain my problem. Since the water heater was still under warranty, American Water Heater paid for General Installation to come out and fix the thermal couple. I had hot water for about three weeks and the pilot went out again. So I relit the pilot again and a couple of days later, no hot water.
This continued several times before I called the number again and after some arguing with customer service, they sent out a plumber to see what was wrong with the water heater (it was still under warranty). Again the thermal couple was replaced. This continued for several months until I called American Water Heater and told them the water heater was a lemon and I should get a new one. After some discussion they agreed to take the old one and put in new one (Note: American Water Heater Co. wanted me to provide a receipt for my purchase of the water heater. Since I didn't buy the water heater, I didn't have a receipt.)
I explained to them the water heater was put in as a condition of the purchase of the house and the seller purchased it. The customer service representative said there was nothing they could do if I didn't have a receipt. After about three weeks and several phone calls I was able to get the receipt. I called American Water Heater to let them know I located the receipt and the customer service representative replied with "that wasn't necessary". American Water Heater agreed to replace the water provided I uninstall it and take it back to the place of purchase. After all the headaches, I refused to do this and told them they should be responsible for having someone come out and take the defective one and put a new one in. Eventually, a new one was put in at no cost.
On March 30, 2010 a new American Water Heater with model no. UG6140T403N and serial no. 1010T415603Product#0731529 was installed. On 7-12-2010, no hot water again so I relit the pilot. Two weeks later, no hot water again. This continued a few more times before I called AWC again to explain my problem. The usual runaround again. I was relighting the pilot three times a week before calling AWC back again and they said I needed to call out a licensed plumber and gave me a list of names and numbers of plumbing companies.
Finally I decided to call a friend who was a licensed plumber to see if any of the problems associated with the water heater were my fault (as American Water Heater claimed or if the water heater was just bad). My friend, a licensed plumber, said there was nothing wrong with the air circulation and no clogs in the vent. After trying to figure out what the actual problem was, he said there was a leak inside the water heater and that was what was making the pilot go out. He also recommended that I check online to see if there were other complaints like mine. Wow, exact stories like mine.
Note: My friend who is a plumber did some digging and found that his supply house won't even carry gas water heaters made by American Water Heater Company because they (the supply house) has had nothing but problems.
On 8-9-2010, the American Water Heater was taken away and an American Standard water heater replaced it. So far, no problem.

First Water Heater: May 21,2009 - Plumber installed new water heater; July 25,2009 - no hot water, called the customer service for American Water Heater Co; July 27,2009 - 1st service tech. said they fixed the thermo couple and replaced the gas valve; July 30,2009 - No hot water / smelled gas / gas company shut-down water heater. August 01,2009 - Same tech. company installed a new gas control due to gas leak from the control. Second Water Heater Installed: October 10,2009.
There continued to be problem after problem with the 1st water heater. Tech. after tech. in my home to try and fix the 1st water heater. Every major part replaced. The only exception was the tank itself. Finally after another round of horrible customer service, calls from reps with this company and my conversation with the plumber that installed the 1st heater, the same plumber installed a 2nd heater from the same company.
November 08,2009 - no hot water / 2nd heater. November 12, 2009, Tech. not at all associated with the water heater company checked the heater. Their conclusion was the heater was installed and maintained properly. The water heater company was trying to claim it was our fault the heater had to be replaced and repaired. Improper ventilation and every kind of nonsense they could fabricate or twist to and shun responsibility for their faulty and dangerous product. This water heater is connected to gas in my home. The gas company shut it down because of the danger to me and my family. The water heater never worked properly. There was always loud knocks and loud condensation noise when it was on. We were always waiting for the heater to break down.
July 23,2010 - No hot water Customer service from American Water Heater tried to have me pay for labor because the warranty did not start new from the 2nd water heater, it carried from the 1st water heater. After explaining some of the horrific experience from their faulty product the customer service rep. authorized labor and parts. She also gave me their website to study how to clean their water heater, because yet again it was probably my fault and not theirs. Another tech. came out and said there was no problem with the heater. Lit the heater. It stayed on maybe 15 minutes and went out again. He mumbled something about poor ventilation and ran out the door. I told the tech. the heater company wanted to speak to him when he got to my home. The tech ignored me and did as he pleased.
I called the company who replaced and installed my furnace/a/c unit. I told them what the tech. from the American Heater Company told me about the ventilation. He came over within the hour and inspected the area directly near and around the water heater. The area associated with the heater on the roof and every other area associated with the water heater and found no problems, He called the tech. that was just in my home and left a message because of course he sis not answer. Finally the 2 tech. spoke and the tech who installed my furnace could not locate a problem of any kind. The furnace / ac company installed another new water heater.
July 26,2010 - Replaced the American Water Heater with a new water heater. New company installed the new heater. No connection to American Water Heater Company.

We purchased a water heater, Model-BFG6140S403NOV, from our local supply house on May 2008. We hired a plumber to install it and all was fine. Approximately a year after we had it, we noticed a strong odor of gas in our basement. We called the fire department and the local gas company. After checking the gas lines, it was confirmed that the gas was coming from the regulator of the water heater.
I called my supplier and he informed me of a recall for the gas regulators on the unit. I was never notified by the company and thankfully the outcome could have been tragic if not discovered early. The supplier replaced the part for no charge, again we had to get a licensed plumber to replace the valve. In July 2010, the water heater began to leak on the top where the cold water line enters the tank. We replaced the 3/4 nipple and this did not rectify the problem. Back to the supply house and they advised me that it was called a leaker, and that the unit can be replaced for a handling fee of $35.00 and that I would have the remainder of the warranty on it, which would be 4 yrs.
So because their product was faulty, not once but twice, I lose 2 years on the warranty of a new tank. Again, the plumber was hired to remove the old and install the new. The new tank is leaking from the exact spot the other one did. So at this point, I will contact the supplier and have his rep look at the issue and they will deal directly with American. My old tank from a different manufacturer lasted 13 years. I am now looking to replace the entire unit with a tankless system.

The call center (in India) told me that the problem was the pilot assembly and it had been recalled and he would send me a new part which would arrive in about 4 days. I had never been notified of any recall and was given the name of General Installation Company in Los Angeles which is supposedly the authorized Factory Warranty Replacement Center for American Water Heater. It turned out they had a replacement part on hand.
Although it was a faulty part, I was still charged $148 for labor. Again in March of 2009, the pilot went out and when I called the company service center (which is not in the US), I was told I would be sent a part. When I complained that this was a major inconvenience, the person then told me to pull out the wires from the pilot assembly and clip them together with a paper clip. In desperation I did this and it worked for the week or so it took for the part to arrive and to find a plumber. This cost $150. July 1, less than 2 months later, the unit failed again. I called General Installation Co and they said they would install a new part for $148. They took no responsibility and offered no suggestions as to how to permanently fix the problem. They were somewhat helpful in providing the part for us, although we had to go to the other side of town to pick it up. But, that was fine. We called a plumber to come and install it and come to find out that that was still not what was causing the failure. We had to pay the plumber regardless, because that is what we called him out to do. Now, he told us to look for the thermostat. I have tried and it is no where to be found. It is going to cost us more money to locate the part then get it installed, and after reading all of this I have a feeling that it probably still will not work. American Water Heater’s blowing up families across America! This could be the headline if American Water Heaters does not take its issue with Water Heater gas conversion kits more seriously. At this time American Water Heater has a known issue with any of their heaters, which includes "FG" at beginning with serial number. The issue causes the pilot light to go out and the heater will not re-light. The consumer would probably not be aware of this issue for hours and faces the potential for significant gas leaks. Both my plumber and the telephone service staff of American Water Heater were well aware of the issue. The company's standard response is to charge for shipping out a replacement part, and the consumer is expected to replace the part.
The biggest concern is that the company has decided not to inform consumers of this issue, even with the potential of gas leaks within the garages and basements of American homes. The options available to the consumer once the issue is identified are also simply unacceptable. Their distributors, installers and plumbers are for some reason not allowed to carry the part, so it can not be fixed until the part shipped out to you. It is unclear to me if they expect the consumer to replace the part themselves or to pay a professional. This of course leaves the family without hot water for several days, making it challenging to do any bathing or cleaning. I am very concerned that American Water Heater has decided to not manage this issue appropriately. An appropriate response would be a recall or at least a letter informing consumers of the issue and encouraging them to have their plumber replace the part. At a minimum, ignoring this issue is causing significant inconvenience and costs for thousands of American families or worse, death.

I have read several issues about American Water Heaters and this includes the Whirlpool brand. I am a plumber and have worked tech support for American. I would like to make some clarifications to some people. 1) If you have an FG model, you will have a reverse thread thermocouple (stupid idea, yes). The thermocouple was discontinued and there is a conversion available. Lowe's and supply houses can carry this but cannot charge for it. Therefore most places do not carry this item as a choice of their own.
If a registration card was sent there would have been a letter received to order the conversion available from American at no charge. Even if you have not had the problem yet, order this. 2) If your serial number ranges from 0722-0836, you will have a bad gas-valve. No matter your warranty status they must repair this at no charge. The tech support are not allowed to tell the customer there was a bad batch of gas-valves that came from Robert Shaw who was the manufacturer. 3) If you relight your WH and few seconds later hear dripping, this is condensation and will stop after the water warms up. I hope this may make some of these problems clearer to the consumer.

I purchased an American water heater after my old 12-year one started leaking. It was purchased in November of 2008. The pilot first went out in September 2009. I was able to re-light it and it stayed lit for 2 months. Then it started going out more frequently. I finally called the plumbing company that installed it. They only install, not repair. Desperate, I called a heating company who did not want to come out when they found what brand name I had. They did call American and got a reference number for me and two people in my area that carry the American parts. I did not have to pay for the repair but it was very inconvenient.
I was told by the heating company that carries the part that I will not have another problem for at least 6 months, but the part and the design are bad and it will go out again. This is an ongoing problem with American. I think this brand should be recalled and the problem fixed for everyone free.

I bought a new home in 2001 and it has an American water heater. The pilot light went out constantly over the course of 3 years and then became less frequent. I was told this was due to wind, but now after reading the above comments, it is obvious a problem with the water heater. Today, I attempted 4 times to light it (no wind last night). It finally stayed lit, but the flame was so loud with what sounded like water dripping on it. I turned it down to vacation mode. Upon my return from work, I turned the heat up again so I will see if it will stay lit, until 2 days from now when a co-worker will install a new water heater - not American brand. I am tired of taking cold showers and waking up early to see if I need to relight the pilot light.

I purchased my 6-year-old house about a year and a half ago. My American Water Heater started going out every night and then would not relight at all. I spent a day and a half trying to call American Water Heater to see if the warranty was still in effect. I was informed that the warranty is non-transferable and when I bought the house the warranty would be voided.
I talked to my plumbing company and they tell me that the problem is the thermocouple but American will not let anyone carry that part and I would have to get it from American because they made theirs with left hand thread instead of the standard right hand thread. Who knows how long that process would take and what it would cost?
Plus being out of hot water during that time. So that common problem was not covered by the non-transferable warranty and it could only be corrected with their part that they will not let anyone carry. American Water Heater is an inferior product in my opinion and not worth even considering. I will have a new and different make of water heater installed today.

My plumber installed an American Water Heater "Flame-Lock" GU model on Saturday. By Sunday, the pilot light would not stay on, and no hot water. A sign on the heater says you cannot return the product to the vendor, but must call customer service. CS representatives told me that the product has no real history of problems, and that AWHC will not replace or refund unless its warranty representative confirms it cannot be repaired and rules out faulty installation or maintenance. When I called the warranty rep, he said they had done "hundreds" of repairs for the pilot light problem. I called CS and demanded replacement or refund. The representative stated, "If you have no further questions, I am terminating this call," and hung up on me.
I read the reports of hundreds of complaints and a class action against AWHC for this same pilot light defect and that AWHC is now marketing the same defective product under the model designation GU. I cancelled everything, called the plumber and distributor who stood behind their work and replaced the heater with a Bradford White at no cost to me. Apparently, the distributor received the same rude treatment as I did. I am told he then pulled out his economic leverage as a large distributor, and AWHC agreed to reimburse him.
In my opinion, there is a deceptive corporate scheme by AWHC to market heaters with known inherent defects, to force consumers into warranty repairs that do not work as a permanent fix, to lie about the repair/complaint history of this defective product and to force consumers to pay for multiple "replacement" components when in truth the defect cannot be "fixed." Do not buy products from AWHC. I would encourage state and federal agencies to investigate unfair business practices and violations of consumer protection statutes, and a state or federal District Attorney to investigate possible violations of penal statutes. The corporate executives who promote this policy should be held personally accountable.

I purchased a new hot water heater in June 2008. The local company (Clark & Rush Mechanical) that I contracted with recommended the American Water Heater Flame Guard model, although there was a class action lawsuit already issued in 2008 (which I was unaware of at the time of purchase). Similar to the other hundreds of people reporting problems with American Water Heater Company, I sadly have had the exact same experience. The pilot light on my unit stopped working and the local gas company representative that came out told me that I may have a bad sensor/control valve.
I called the 800 number. I spoke to an individual in India, who would be shipping the part out in two days. She also gave me a different 800 number to call to arrange for installation. I called the other 800 number to arrange for a service technician. Guess what company answered the phone? Sears. A year ago when shopping for HWTs, an in-store Sears employee told me very plainly and directly not to purchase from Sears due to the poor quality of service work technicians that Sears subcontracts within our area. Anyway, I called the 800 number provided by American Water Heater Company reps in India, and the US person that I spoke with told me that Sears does not service the brand that I am calling about. I called back to India rep, and now am in an endless "do loop"!
Rather than dealing with all of this, and particularly after reading the posts on this website where so many people have worse or similar problems, I am quite tempted to simply call a new plumbing company. And have them come out and install a brand new unit after I am able to determine what company out there actually makes a reputable product any more. However, it is doubtful that it will be an American-made product. Too bad that Toyota doesn't make HWTs.

My husband purchased a new home in April 2006. The water heater was included. I always thought that we did not have adequate hot water, but I dealt with it. Today, we got up to ice cold water. No pilot light on the water heater. How handy it was that the instructions to light it were on a sticker, complete with diagrams. We tried the 10-minute wait. Nothing. He went on to work. I waited 15 minutes. Nothing. I tried again at 10-minute intervals for another 1.5 hour!
Finally at 7:30am, I decided to try the 800 number. I was directed to a call center somewhere definitely not America! I could not understand the service rep. I was asked for all of my information, because our water heater was not registered. I gave him the requested info, and he asked if there is a spark when I try to ignite to heater. No spark. The rep told me that the thermocoupling for my water heater was no longer made but that they could send a different one and a new adaptor. All I would have to pay was the shipping and handling. Hmmm.
I asked why their service tech wouldn't have the part. Couldn't he come by and fix it that day or the next. No, I was responsible for labor. The 6-year warranty did not cover labor after the first year. I asked him why the part was not sent to me as a replacement prior to now, since the part was obviously defective. If they didn't even make them, had replaced them! The heavily accented man told me that I had to pay the freight and that maybe I could install the part myself. I said that they could send me the replacement part but that I would not pay shipping and handling for something that was replacing a defective part! A water heater should last for more than 3 years! I asked for a supervisor. I was told that my warranty did not cover labor. I asked for a supervisor, and I was hung up on!
Do not buy an American Water Heater product. I have a plumber installing a new one at noon (same day service). I see on this site alone that some of my neighbors also have problems with their water heaters. There is even a question as to if this machine has been recalled. No one knows! I called a local commercial plumber who met me at my condo at 4:30 pm and no part. He called the 800 number and ended up leaving my house in disgust. Once again, getting nowhere. "John" told the plumber to go on top of my roof and look in the vent to see if it’s blocked then call him back. That did not happen. So there went the money, I had to pay Roto-Rooter for nothing. I then called my association for help, who sent out their maintenance man to look into the vent; no blockage! He called the 800 number and got "John" again who was rude and had no clue how to even read from the manual he was obviously reading from. Now my 61-year-old father has been at my house for 2 days trying to help me because I cannot find anyone to deal with customer service. One plumber told me he would never do work with, on or for American Water Heaters again ever. Two tanks have already been replaced in my complex that is not more than 5 years old. I have multiple sclerosis and am supposed to avoid stress in order to keep me from relapsing. This has been horrible! Day 10 and still no hot water, no help, nothing! He was very nice and helpful; however, this company made a defective product and should stand behind it and not charge people to ship replacement parts for the defective merchandise! People should also not have to put out the expensive cost of a professional to install the replacement parts. They tell you on the phone that there are instructions and you can do it yourself! Not many people feel confident working on gas-fueled appliances and water heaters! If something goes wrong, God forbid, you probably would not even be covered due to it not being installed by a professional! I had a problem early on with this water heater from Whirlpool (model # FG1H4040T3NV) that was purchased at Lowe’s.
Lowe’s was useless when something went wrong! I had to call the water heater company. Fortunately, for us it was within one year. I did have to pay shipping but they did reimburse us for the plumber cost to replace the first part. If I remember correctly, the plumber used his own part after theirs was not working properly again. He said their part was **! We have gotten about 4 more years out of this water heater and are now experiencing the same problem! Again, I had to pay to have a "conversion kit" shipped to our home for $20.00 and I will have to hire a professional to install this conversion kit, which they will not cover due to it being more than one year! Nice warranty! Something needs to be done about this company continually taking advantage of people. And also to Lowe’s for continuing to sell and not stand behind the merchandise they sell. This whole situation has caused much stress, frustration and inconvenience to our family. Financially, this will put a big dent in our finances and it's a very bad time due to the recession.

They put me through to a guy whose heavy Indian accent is extremely hard to understand (pathetic).
When I first had these issues, I'd follow his instructions as best as I could. Sometimes I'd get the pilot relit, but it has never stayed lit. Every time I need to call an authorized repair person. A couple of times, the parts/labor were on warranty, but I've more often had to pay at least $147 to have it repaired. This has now happened with eight of their water heaters. No doubt, it will happen again.
Our plumber says he's been using the American brand for over 20 years, and until the last 4 years, there was never a problem. There appears to be nothing I can do, except ask our plumber to no longer install American Water Heater products. It's a ** shame that they simply no longer stand behind their product. Every time a water heater fails, it inconveniences both me and my tenants. First, I have to go test the unit out. Then, I have to call American's 800 number, then talk to a guy in India, then call the authorized repair company and arrange a visit, then show up for the visit, and finally, pay to have the ** heater fixed. If it had only happened once, it would not be so frustrating, but today, was the 8th time. Frankly, this isn’t fun anymore.

Once on the phone with technician and I gave them the model #FG6140T403NOV, I was told this water heater had been recalled and that there was a class action lawsuit against American Water Heater. I was given a number for the recovery center and they are sending out the upgrade kit and a technician tomorrow, 4/14.
I called the 800-999-9515 number back and requested a refund of the $20 and to cancel the part (per instructions by recovery center). I was told nope, they could not do it. After asking for a manager, I was told managers don't take calls. I finally got a supervisor who I told that this heater was recalled I was told not true by American. Then I was told recall expired in June 2008. What company does not know what is happening with their products? After stating I would stop the payment, she stated she would refund the shipping charges and she told me to keep the part because I may need it in a few months. After 4 hours of dealing with this rude and ignorant company and now 3 days of no hot water, I am very frustrated. I have lost two days of work, not to mention can't shower, wash our hands after restroom visits or do dishes and wipe down counters.
This is very disturbing, not to mention unhealthy. They refuse any compensation when they knew of the problem. Another question is why wasn't I or Pasquinelli Builders informed of this lawsuit/recall. Who knows how many other condo owners in this complex have had issues with their water heaters and have paid for it out of their pockets? I feel this is totally unacceptable. Someone should contact the builders of new construction because we do not know where they purchase their products at. I looked on your website and found several other complaints within the last couple months about the same thing. How long is this company going to be allowed to push consumers around? They created this water heater. They should fix at no cost to anyone and compensate for lost wages and unhealthy conditions. This technician better show up tomorrow.

I have had to have parts on my water heater replaced four times in less than a year with this company. I am frustrated beyond words. This has been a danger (gas leaking), terrible inconvenience and lots of days without hot water.

Approx. 4 years ago, we had an American Water heater installed. The first 3 years, things went pretty good. Then last Jan. 2008, the pilot light kept going out so I called the company and was told I needed a reset switch and to Next Day Air would be $24.95 so I did. We had a newborn baby at our house and needed hot water. The part came and we installed it and it worked for about 3 months and then the pilot light kept going out. We manually relighted it for several months and then I got tired of doing that and called the company once again to be told it was a different defective part, so they sent this regulator box that all the gas lines go into and expected us to install it when the directions say it it is very dangerous and the first sentence is to hire a professional. So we did just that and it worked for about a hour.
So once again, I phoned the company and was told I had to perform all these tests. So I called the technician back out to check the fire trap and the down draft and clean the combustion chamber. He also installed a thermal coupler. All that was done and when the technician pulled out of the driveway, the pilot light went out and would not stay lit for more than about 15 minutes. I called the company again and now they want another test done by the propane company to test gas pressure. I feel it is useless to do this even if they provide a new product. We would pay installation and we have already spent over $350 in service calls and have been without hot water for almost a year.
We can light the pilot every time we need hot water but feel that is unacceptable. So we are going to go purchase a new water heater, a different brand of course, and have it installed and write this off as a bad experience and hope that American Water heater will be put out of business. I don't understand how they can continue to sell these faulty products. There are 100s of complaints just like mine. It has three new components and still will not function and they want more proof it's defective.
