They have been charging me overdraft fees two to three times for a transaction even when funds get deposited. They seem to hold the deposit and then if a transaction comes in, they charge you overdraft fees because they say the payroll check does not clear.

I have been charged thousands of dollars in overdraft fees even after I made sure there was money in the bank. I was charged 37.50 for an overdraft of about 1.00. I would like to get in on any class action lawsuit that may be going on against this bank. Please help. If a person overdraws his account, he certainly doesn't have the money for this bank to steal from him. And that is really what they are doing. They will manipulate the charges so that they will get every penny that they can from you. Please tell me what I have to do to get in on this lawsuit. I have lost thousands and even after I have deposited well over the amount needed to bring my account into the black, their fees would take me back in the red. Thank you very much.

I had three direct deposits going into my checking account and they would post payments or transaction before posting my deposits. Then if I would write a check, they would hold off on posting my debit card transactions return the check for insufficient funds and then charge an overdraft fee for each of my debit card transactions. Within a timeline of three months, they had taken over $1500 from me in overdraft fees.

Every time a check is deposited, a fee would be charged if I used my debit card. The account would overdraft, even though I have direct deposit for my checking account.

I sent a certified letter to Kevin, stating that they gave me $444 in overdraft fees that were not legitimate as I deposited a money order and had $759 in my account to cover my bills and they never processed my money order until Tuesday; and on Monday paid a check that I wrote out on the money order; and then bounced all of my ATM transactions and charged me nine overdraft charges on Monday totalling $333; on Tuesday charged me another $111.00 in bounce fees and then finally posted my money order.

A couple months ago, I had just sold my bike for $2,000, so i put that in my account. I knew when I signed up I thought I signed something that if i over-drafted my account, it would get taken out of my savings account, since my work checks get deposited into my savings. A couple months ago, I transferred $300 over to pay a Capital One bill. It took a couple days, since it was over the weekend. I was going shopping and put another $100 in checking just to be safe. I spent $70 (not exactly but a little more than $70) while shopping. The next 2 days I checked the account, and Capital One had not gone through yet. Still the $300 and something was in there to cover that. That week I had tried to use my debit card for small things, like something to drink at the gas station, but my card got denied. I didn't think anything of it. I thought their machines might be not working properly. I did it again the next day, and the same thing happened.
I read my mail that day, and it said I had $500 and some overdraft fees from Capital One rejecting the payment since, "the sufficient funds were not in there". I knew immediately something was wrong. I went to two Fifth Third Banks, and tried to figure it out. I got sent to the one where I signed up, and all the guy had to say was "oh looks like your problem is using your card too much, and explained that I had spent the $300 and Capital One refused it, because the $300 was not there.
I knew that was not true either, because I put the $100 in checking also. When he pulled it up, it looked the opposite, and there was nothing I could do. I knew i was right but he said "oh well i can take 75$ off but stop using your card so much". Who is he to tell me how to use my money. I never carry cash on me, but I check my account daily to see what funds I do have. I asked what I had signed and he said you signed the paper for us to not take it out from savings. I knew it wasn't true, but couldn't find the paper that I originally signed. I'm not saying I'm perfect, and that I have never over-drafted my account, but when the funds were in there i should have never been charged more than $500! Please help.
I intended to buy a car, but that $500 and something put me back a lot on bills, and everything else. I had to pay, not to mention, I wasn't positive if capital one even got their payment. They said they did, but on Capital One, it was showing it was not paid yet. I will be canceling with Fifth Third and going to another bank. I already stopped my direct deposit from work. Everyone I have talked to will do the same. $500 is a ridiculous amount. I would never even tried try using my card, and get charged the $30 that they charged me, to add up to $200, if I had any idea the money was not in there. Nothing makes sense about that.

In one month, I paid 190.00 overdraft fees. I had proof that the bank was charging overdraft fees for checks that were not yet posted on my account. The bank manages accounts on available balance day to day, whoever enters the drafts at night would enter the biggest amount and cause all others to bounce costing me and others several overdraft fees.

A deposit was made to my checking account on 10/19/2010 at 11:15 am and later that day, there were some online banking payments made. I left the next morning, for several days to Texas so the account was not checked until I returned on the 26th. The bank called and said the account was overdrawn. They charged my account on the 20th in the amount of $165 for overdraft charges. By the 23rd, they had charged over $230. I took a copy of the deposit to the bank only to find out that they did not post the deposit until the 20th although the deposit slip clearly showed the 19th. What they did was process the online payments which naturally would overdraft the account. Their overdraft charges are what caused the account to be overdrawn. Even talking to the manager was futile. They agreed to credit back $75 but that is all they would do. The balance due on the account was paid and I closed the account.
Even when I pulled up a copy of the bank statement, it did not show the account overdrawn on the 19th. The statement showed the deposit and the online payments also dated the 19th. How can the bank justify this overdraft?
On their "online" site, it clearly states that payments made after 2:00 pm would be dated the next day. When I questioned this, I was told that this is for payments made to 5/3. I told the manager that this is not what it says. Her reply was "well, that's what it means" So what it boils down to is that 5/3 Bank processes any or all of your debits and then posts your deposits. They know that by doing this, in the majority of most cases, it will overdraw your account and they immediately charge overdraft fees. This practice needs to be stopped, or at least when you make deposits and withdrawals on the same day, the deposits should be processed first or at least show a "pending" deposit.

I have spoken with several representatives and have gotten nowhere. I feel that I need an attorney just to get through to anyone with knowledge. I have co-signed on a loan that fell into default without my notice. They have my correct information on file and from what I understand, they are required to notify in writing about payments being late. The car was repossessed without my knowledge and they said that I had 10 days to bring the account to current, but that 10 days started 6 days before I even knew what was going on. I was notified by the other person who pays on the loan that they could no longer pay because they lost their job after the repossession.
This bank has also denied giving me full information about the situation by consistently telling me I have to talk to someone else. I have began requesting a loan through another bank to bring the car out of repo and get it current, but without a copy of the title, I cannot proceed. I am willing to cooperate with the bank to make payments to bring the account current, but the associates I have spoken with can never answer my questions. I am unable to make the full $1000 payment they want to release the vehicle, but I could possibly come close and bring the account current with several payments. The bank has given me no knowledge about the vehicle and what they would do if I only made a partial payment. They don't appear to want to work with me on a payment plan. Help!

They wiped out my savings account for over draft fees. I deposit my check and they held funds for 4 business days. In the meantime I did not realize that my funds were "unavailable" and used my debit card. All purchases went through, but they charged me overdraft fees for each purchase. My deposits were cash and payroll checks. I have been a customer of theirs for 4 years and never had a problem. All of a sudden they are holding my funds, they never told me at the bank when I made deposits that the funds would not available for 4 business days. I called about it a few times and they never gave me a straight answer. They tried to make it look like I was using my card when I knew I did not have money. I had all my deposit slips to prove that I deposited the day I said I did.

The bank charged me 540 dollars in overdraft fees by taking debits out of order. They cleared a check that came in on Monday and bounced 13 debits from the prior weekend. Then because of the overdraft then bounced the check too to get their 366 dollars in fees. Then another 36 then another 111, I told them I had made an error but only the check should have bounced not the debits from earlier. There was money to cover all the debits and most of the check.

I have been a customer with 5/3 for many of years. I did some yard work, along with other little tid bits for some people, who wrote me a check that also was with 5/3.The amount was exactly $110.00.I deposited the check. Though the bank never told me, this check that was written to me was in the rears, they deposited it. I had used my debit card, and made a car payment. Two days later, I receive an overdraft fee in the amount of $38.00, along with $110.00 that I deposited. Plus every day $8.00.At the time I was not working. The bank sent the check thru again. Another paper sent to me of $38.00, and another $8.00 a day. This went on for over two weeks. Every day, $38.00 and additional $8.00. I was now in the rears of over $800.00; I went into the bank after a few days to see why I was being punished, for this mistake that I didn’t cause.
To find out, the people who wrote the check to me, was also being charged. As I'm sitting in the Bank Managers office, him wearing a smirk on his young face (I wanted to reach over and slap it off of him),he tells me, since I didn’t have that much money in my account, I didn’t have the money to cover this check I cashed. He would see me again. He didn’t try to stop the massive overloads of over draft fees. He also told me, he would bet me, I would be back, begging for a chance to have them stop taking money from my account. That I needed to have some sort of money on me, even if change to deposit into my account, or I would be arrested. This happened in May 2009.

Back in September 2008, I had a bankruptcy that closed and we wanted to try and keep our van. We fell behind a payment and tried to work with them with it. I made arrangements with them to make a payment the day before my scheduled payment. They called me at work and said they were no longer interested in my money. I had enough time and they were going to come get my van, I told them I was making the payment the next day and they said my money was no longer good and they said they were coming that week to pick up the van. They verified my address along with my work address. I gave up.
Now, 2 years later, they never came, never called again and I just received a letter from a collection agency saying I need to pay them 11,000 for the van. They also called me at work and I told them what happened and all they kept saying is your refusing to pay. Well, after looking at my credit report, it shows up as a charge off which i'm not sure what that means but I expected them to get my van, so I had a different car. After 2 years now, they want me to pay 11000 after they said they were going to repossess it. Can't afford, that's why I was in the situation I was.
I have 1 income and 3 kids to take care of. I thought they were coming to get it. How can they ask for money now and get it. I don't understand, I told the collection agency they were supposed to repo and they just said, well, now they want the money and I don't think that's fair. I had to get a different vehicle because of them. I still have van and they can still have it. I simply can't afford to pay 11000 for a vehicle I barely use since it has sat for so long.

I woke up today and found my car was missing. There was no sign of break in. Because of that, I reported the incident to San Marcos Police Department. They ran my VIN and license plate and came up with no report of repossession. Later that day, my claim representative from Progressive called and he also called First Third Bank who were the lien holder, said my car was repossessed because of having no insurance. My insurance representative informed Fifth Third Bank that my car was insured, but according to FTB, there was no insurance since March.
They force added insurance, making my on-time payment delinquent. I was never informed, emailed, called or given notice. FTB said they had the old address, even though I sent a notice of address change with my payment, my check had current updated address. Fifth Third Bank transferred my call to repossession department representative. The representative said I need to pay $1008.68 + $565 repossession fee and other storage fee. She refused to say where the car was (undisclosed location). So I’m having my insurance company work with for me, but I feel like I'm dealing with a mob loan shark rather than a financial bank.

I want to warn anyone and everyone who is even considering any type of business transaction with Fifth Third Bank to think twice about it. This bank is unscrupulous, heartless and, funny enough, the recipient of billions in tax payer money I am told. If you are 30 days late on a car loan with these bandits, they will not accept your payment until you also pay your next payment that is not even due yet at the same time. This way they can say you were two months behind and they can try and repo your car. By repossessing your car, they sell it and get the full loan amount upfront due on the loan instead of waiting for you to make $200 a month payments over the next 3 years. Pretty devious and clever tactic that they use.
Then it’s your word against theirs. You say, “I tried to make a payment on the phone and you refused it, then they deny it.” I urge everyone to write the senators of Ohio, the Attorney Generals and the Federal Reserve OCC about this gang of, in my opinion to be is, crooks. Do not get involved with them in anyway. You miss a payment with a normal bank, they are happy to take your late payment. Not these guys. They will jump right to repossession if you have a car that you have been paying them on that has a lot of equity. I would be interested in joining any and all class action suits pertaining to this tactic they employ. They refuse payment on vehicles; then they say you are now so far behind that they can legally take your car, sell it and collect the full existing loan amount up front.

I have only one card for using my daily purposes and I am in new state. I will take two weeks to get the new card. By the way, he harassed me a lot. I confirmed with my TFCU bank regarding the same. They told that I have sufficient money on the account, why Fifth Third Bank denied? They are supposed to crash my card. By the way, the behavior of the manager (Mr.***) was rude. He does not know how to behave with the customer. I am totally dissatisfied. Thanks.

I bought a car in 2008. I put $5,000 down and my boyfriend co-signed all. So we both lost our jobs three years later due to a shut down but still paid our car payment, sometimes late. We had the car for two years, and then we called Fifth Third Bank trying to get the bank to refinance the car so that we could get our payment lowered. They wouldn't do it because neither one of us had a job at the time. So my boyfriend got a job and then they still wouldn’t let us refinance. Then three months later, they repo my car saying I owed $2,000 on the insurance that they was paying.
That was the main reason why we wanted the car to be refinance—so we could keep the payment up. We have never been late on our car note until we lost our job. We lost every thing—our home and we are in depth over our heads. So I called them and asked if they could hold the car until my boyfriend get his next check. Then they wanted to know how much did I have right then. I told them I had $1,600. They wouldn't even take that. I was going to send them the rest the following Friday so that they sold my car on that Wednesday.
That was the saddest day of my life. I felt like that could've held it for me until that Friday. All I got to say is God bless them. I put so much money down on the car and only owed two more years of payments on the car. I really felt like I just been robbed for every thing I worked so hard for. They took my car because I was behind on my insurance and not my car payment. That really, really hurts. It's really a pain you can't explain. I felt like it was wrong.

I have mailed pressing documents to Kansas every day for a year now, and they get there in 2 days.
I am supposed to believe it takes 7+ days for mail to go across the state? From everything I have read on this site, this bank thrives on late fees. Also, the fees they charge for savings account withdrawals no one can give me an exact answer to how the month is calculated. I informed her the car was paid off in September but I would call Fifth Third to make sure they received the payment. Yes, they got it but there is another one due that is not in the payment book. I disputed their claim since I had made 62 payments already on a 5-year loan with no late payments all received early.
They informed me that they never include the last payment in the book that they send you a payment statement since you might choose to skip a payment or be late and they couldn't calculate that on a final payment voucher. They don't seem to know anything about an amortization schedule. They me told I owed and would pay it or the car would be repossessed. I have an excellent credit rating. I pay my bills on time and am furious that they have pulled this stunt. They do no include anything in the loan payment book informing you that it is incomplete and told me the car dealer should have given me that information.
I am 64 and an informed and experienced consumer I thought. They know it would cost more to get a lawyer and fight than it would be to pay. They also couldn't give me an amount I owed , but will send me a statement in the next 10 days or so and refuse information on any fees or penalties. So I have no idea how much they will charge. I'm sure they do this to a lot of people since they say it is their procedure.

Our loan number is 8934838. Finally, we have a our own PIN with Cook County, however a bill for taxes for year 2008, due in 2009, was sent to your company. The payment was sent to the county on November 2010 for $ 5,080.37. Another payment was sent to the county for $2,794.20 on February 2010, however that payment was the first installment for the tax due for the year 2009.
However, your company assumed that they will get a bill from the county again, to be paid some time around September 2011 for $5,080.37. I have been dealing with your company mortgage department and with Jane at **. I let her know, that this is the first time the county split the full amount of taxes in 2 installments, and the $5,080.37 is for the full year. Taxes in IL are a year behind.
I called the county, and spoke with a supervisor, Angela (**). She stated that I am correct, and the mortgage company can email the county, or go to the website.
Bottom line, by 12/01/10, my mortgage payment will be $2,499.46 a month, because your company have me down on projection for next year's taxes, a bill for $2794.20 by March 2011, and $5,080.37 for September 2011. That is incorrect. Our taxes for the year are $5,080.37. I need this issue to be resolved. I also spoke with my real estate attorney today about this. I will go to the media, and also file a legal complaint, if this issue is not resolved. My husband is really upset about this. You can contact me at **. I can't afford paying $2,499.00 a month for a condo, and $7,000 a year in taxes, when my actual tax is $5080.37 a year.

Our family has really struggled, as many have, the past couple of years. We have gone through all our savings (I'm 64 & 2 major surgeries in Nov & Dec 09). Now I'm disabled drawing SS Disability & husband is 78 with advanced Alzheimer's. Things being really tight, by the end of the month or until our SS is direct deposited to Fifth Third on the evening of the 2nd. I have had $572 in overdraft charges since 12/3/03, just after my first surgery. On 11/1, I had 7 debits come through and they took the 2 largest $99 for the gas for home & $70 for Time Warner Cable & paid them first.
I thought I had it understood lat month with the gas company that they would not debit (auto debit) until the 5th since our SS comes in on 3rd. Time Warner showed pending for 4 days then just disappeared. I finally checked yesterday to see if it had cleared & they showed it cleared. It popped up paid last night and all the smaller ones paid but $37 O/D fees on all of those. After e-mail complaint & lack of understanding on why they did it (paid larger first), they said it was their option (Guess so!). This is just not right; they did, as a "courtesy" refund $37. This O/D fee would have almost paid my power bill for the month. This has to be stopped!

On October 30, 2010, I received a letter from Fifth Third Bank stating I was in default on my car loan with them and I needed to come up with $951.48, including late fees of $15.00 prior to November 21, 2010, or my vehicle would be repossessed. I was not aware that my account was in default at all as I always pay my bill every month. If it is ever 1-2 days late, I pay the late fee.
I went through my bank records and realized to my horror that my September 2010 payment had not processed even though I had scheduled it through online banking. I scheduled this payment 2 days before I had major surgery and have been recovering for the last month. I had no idea that payment had not been processed until Saturday, October 30, 2010. I had already made my October payment. I called the bank immediately on November 1, 2010, to ask them about this default and how they came up with the total of $951.48. I was told that since the account had been turned over to a collection agency, I needed to contact the collection agency. I was not aware it had been turned over to a collection agency. I was told that the amount of $951.48 was for the September, October and November 2010 payments and there was a late fee of $15 in that amount.
Well, October was not even late yet and November was not even due until the end of the month! And, the amount for 3 months worth of payments did not calculate out to the $951.48. Had I actually been in default for 3 months the amount would have been more than $951.48.
They also had my name incorrect on the account as well as my home phone number, which was not my doing. They did that. They had my last name as my first name and my first name as my last name listed in their files. After the person at Fifth Third Bank gave me the number of the "Collections agency", I called that number. When the phone was answered by an automated service, it did not even identify a name or type of company that I was calling. When I finally got a person on the line, I asked her the name of the company I was calling. I was informed it was Regional Adjustment Bureau. I told her I wanted to clear up my account immediately and that I only owed the September payment. She took the payment over the phone.
After reading now all the other complaints about Fifth Third Bank, I can only hope that the place that I paid my bill to was indeed a legitimate agency. I called Fifth Third Bank to make sure they get my name correct on my account (my last name has now changed since I got the loan) and to talk to a supervisor about my account. I was told by Kirsten that I needed to speak to Customer Service at another telephone number on the name change and that since my account was with an outside agency, she had no information available on my account. I asked her why the person I had spoken to that morning had the information available. She did not know. I explained to her that I had called the collection agency and taken care of the matter.
Fifth Third Bank did not show that in their system. She told me I would have to call Customer Service about the name change. I called Customer Service and asked to speak to a supervisor. Uriel did not want me to speak to a supervisor, but finally a man named Eli came on the phone and I explained everything to him again. He had a very heavy accent and was difficult to understand. He told me I would have to call the Dispute Center number which he was going to give to me. I told him I wanted to know about the name change and he told me to call Customer Service.
I told him I had just called Customer Service. He started to tell me something about when calling in, but then he hung up on me. I never got the Dispute Center number. I called back once again and spoke to someone who first told me in order to change the name on my account I had to go into a branch. Well, I don't even know where a branch is, it turns out there is not one in my entire state! Then Caprice got on the line and told me to fax in a copy of my driver's license with the correct name and they would change it. I'm not sure I want them to have my DL information.
When I asked Fifth Third Bank about sending it to collections and not letting me know it was even being considered for collections, I was told that it is only a courtesy for them to send out a late notice or a notice telling them they were going to send to collections and then they didn't know why I hadn't received a notice. I did, on November 1, 2010, after I had called the bank and the "collection agency" receive a letter from Regional Adjustment Bureau stating I was in default for $951.48. Had I known a month ago that my payment had not processed, I could have taken care of it right away.
Fifth Third Bank has already turned me over to the credit bureaus for being "delinquent" yet refuses to remove that from my credit reports as they said it was not due to their error. I pay my bills every month and do not need this huge mark on my credit report. After a divorce in 2000, I have spent a long time getting my credit back to where I want it and now this! I will never do business with this bank again, and I will tell everyone I know about how they treat customers.

5 3 Bank has charged me $100 in overdraft fees. I deposited a work check on Saturday Oct. 16th and in the process had bills set up for automatic payment on Monday Oct. 18th. I did not think anything of this, and that I would be charged overdraft fees, because I deposited money into my account. I got notified that I had $100 of overdraft fees, because the check I deposited on Saturday did not clear until Monday night. Normally, automatic payments at 5 3 do not post to your account on the day they start to process it takes about 3-5 days to show, up. However, because they didn't clear my check yet, they made sure that my payments cleared on day 1, so they could charge me $100 in overdraft fees. What makes the matter worse is that I have my account set up to send me text messages if my account goes under $100 so this will never happen. I never received a text message.
Now I am being charged $100. This is ridiculous and I can't believe a bank functions this way and has customers who still bank with them. I have reported them to the better business bureau and I am filling out the paperwork to send into the Illinois banking department that takes care of issues like this with banks. This is an unfair practice of trying to get any money you can out of your customers. I am going to the bank to complain and get my $100 reposted to my account. If they do not I will be closing my account right away and walking out not having a checking account or savings account. I do not make enough money to have to pay fees like this when the money has been deposited into my account and 5 3 bank is sitting around waiting to slap fees on their customers. This is not customer service.
Their customer service people are rude and they think they are the most important people on the face of the earth. I tried to talk to a supervisor's supervisor or manager and was told they are the highest I could go. They then proceeded to hang up on me, because I would not take that as an answer. I tried to search to see where to complain to and found nothing. I emailed the COE of 5 3 bank and got nothing back in response. I believe a class action lawsuit should be filed against 53 bank and their unfair banking practices. Along with that someone in the US government should create laws that protect citizens from this unfair banking practice. There is no reason if someone deposits money after hours on Friday, that they can't use their money until Tuesday. That is way too long to have money that you actually have held up and then get charged an arm and a leg because the bank does not process its deposits before it process its debits. Again, it would be nice if we could get people together to file a class action lawsuit against 5 3 bank.

Also, I was charged additional fees because Fifth Third chooses to wait and run larger payments first no matter if the payment was made 2 days ahead of the smaller payment and now I'm in the negative in the amount of over $500 for a negative balance of $38.50. I have a loan thru Fifth Third for my Chevy truck. I have been one time with my payments (maybe late 1 or 2 times in 6 years). Two years ago, I was laid-off due to my company relocating to different area. I called Fifth Third and asked if they would lower payment because I was on unemployment. Their reply was, "If you had a job, we might lower payments." If I had a job I would not need lower payments.
This does not make sense to me. I continued to make the payments even though on unemployment. When I finally got a job, it was part-time and for minimum wage. With my unemployment it was hard, but I made the payments. I called fifth third and again asked to reduce the payments. They reduced the payments by $90.00, which helped a little. In August I lost my unemployment and I have since got another part-time job. I have applied for full time jobs with no results. I am now working 7 days a week trying to make ends meet. This week I get a call on Monday from Fifth Third bank about my truck payment. I am not late but I am on 10 days grace period.
I told him I would make payment ASAP. He was a little pushy, but not too bad. On Wednesday a woman calls me; she gets very rude and threatening and making fun of my job situation and threatening to take my truck. Again, I am not late and I plan to make payments before grace period is over. This kind of harassment should not happen, especially now with this country in the state it's in financially. Fifth Third needs to treat it's customers better as I can see by the previous complaints on this web site. I am doing all that I can to make my payments. These harassing calls need to stop. I had taken a loan on a credit card, which I did not want to do, just to get them off my back. Got another call on Thursday. I told them I had made payment.

As a matter of fact, they called my mother and told her she would not be able to access my father's $30,000 CD and that she would lose it because it wasn't in her name! They were hell bent on snatching that money.
It took an act of congress to get the situation corrected. I had to go through top management, who claimed not to have anything on file for the transaction, despite the fact that I left them with my POA papers and all forms signed to make it happen. They are crooked. Do not trust this organization. When Fifth Third called my mother to tell her she wouldn't get access to my dead father's money, she nearly had a heart attack/stroke. I had an auto loan with Fifth Third bank. I set up an automatic payment ending with the 59th payment, the last payment in the payment book. On the last pay stub it states, "A notice will be sent regarding final payment or new book will be delivered". They did not send me anything or notify me in any way what the final payment was.
Then I get these automated phone calls saying I am late and they will report me to the credit agencies if I don't make my payment. So after making my first 59 payments on time, they ** up and don't do what they are supposed to do and then threaten to hurt my credit and want to charge me a late fee?
I call them up and and go in circles ending up several times talking to somebody in another country that can only do one thing, collect payment by giving them the routing number to my bank account and of course there is another $17 fee to do that. I eventually got the late fee removed and sent payment from my online checking account. I just find it insulting that after being a good customer and making the first 59 payments on time, that they then treat me like this, when they are the ones that did not follow through on what they were supposed to do.
This was a frustrating and stressful situation that wasted my time. I was also interupted at work. I am tired of this guilty until proven innocent culture regarding your personal credit history. The big banks and corporations can do whatever they want and then blackmail you into paying things you shouldn't have to pay because otherwise, they will ding your credit. Did Fifth Third unknowingly make a mistake by not sending me notice of final payment or did they do it on purpose to try to get a few more bucks out of me? Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if it was the latter.

I then told her I was extremely worried about my personal information being in the wrong hands and she told me, "You should have applied online if you are concerned".
I then explained that the website was down on the night before it was mailed (as it still is **) and I was of the impression that a postage paid pre-printed envelope would make it to its destination. Was called today and told the car was two months behind because a payment was due Aug.10, 2010 and one was also due today totaling $1400.00. Huh?
Jason is the one I talked to today. He was very rude. I told him I knew a payment was coming up that I was suppose to be sent a payment book and would gladly make a payment when I get one. He said he was not sending me a payment book and I needed to give him a payment of $1400 today or they would repo the car again. When I let him know that it was not two months behind because a payment was made last month, he got argumentative and said I had agreed to make a payment on August 10, 2010. This does not make sense. On Aug. 27, I checked my account online. I had two charges pending from a gas station in Winder Ga. with my debit card. I had my debit card with me. I called the 800 number and canceled my card and told them that I was at home in Louisville Ky and had not traveled to Ga. and that I wanted to dispute the charges. I was told since they were pending, I could not dispute them. The next day, the charges went through. I called again and told them they were not my charges and I wanted to dispute them. My account was overdrawn by $3.00 and I had two checks still out. They told me to go to my branch and use early access to get some money. So I went to my branch, told them what was going on and borrowed $200. I put $100 in my account to cover the two checks.
At no time did they tell me that there were 5 more charges for the same amount which was $74.95 on my account. So I am thinking I have the money to cover my checks in there and everything is okay. I even got online using my husband's card on Mon., Aug. 30th, to check my account. Everything was okay, my $100 was there and nothing else was pending. On Wednesday, Sept. 1st, my husband tried to use his card to check the account again. He was locked out of the account. They canceled his debit card also even though the disputed charges were all made with my card. Not only did they cancel his card to our joint account, they also canceled his debit card to an account that was just his.
So he gets on the phone to check the account and we are over drawn $506. He called me and asked me to call the 800 number that I called before and find out what was going on. I called and was told that on Aug. 30th, 5 more charges for $74.95 from the same gas station in Ga. went through. I asked them why they paid them when I was already disputing two charges for the same amount in the same place and city.
On Fri., Aug 28th. They claim they had no record of my disputing the charges and that all I did was cancel my card. The $100 that I put in the account for the two checks I had out was gone, and they returned my checks and charged me an overdraft fee for both of them and for all of the $74.95 charges. They knew that we had automatic deposits coming in on Friday. So they paid all of the fraudulent charges and returned the ones that they knew were legit. I was told that they will investigate and it could take up to ten days and if they decide I didn't make the charges myself then they will return my money.
So now, I can't even pay my house payment because they have my money tied up. And to top it all, I went to my branch and asked the manager if they could type a letter for me to take to Walmart and CVS pharmacy to explain why the checks were returned and was told no. I asked if they were going to give me the money back for the fees they would charge for returned checks and was told no and she then stuck her finger in my face and told me if I continued to yell at her she would not help me. I had my voiced raised but I was not yelling yet. I told her that everyone I had dealt with at Fifth Third had an attitude and she said it was because of the way I talked to them. I then started yelling and ** and left. My phone fell out of my purse while I was in there and I went back with my son and gave him my ID and sent him in to get my phone and they would not give it to him. They said I had to come in and get it. I did not want to go back in because I was still pretty irate and mad. I had to call security at theire\ main office to call them and tell them I would go through the drive through and to give me my phone back.
So the next day someone from Fifth Third's main office calls my husband and tells him we have to get our direct deposits changed because they are going to close our accounts because we are undesirable customers. He asked if we will ever get our money back and was told he didn't know it was being investigated by their dispute department and if it is decided we didn't make the charges, we would. The thing is, I used my debit card three times in Louisville Ky the same day it was used in Ga. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I could not be in Louisville and Winder, Ga. on the same day. We have banked with Fifth third for 13 yrs and they were crazy to think they needed to kick us out as customers. We had no intention of staying with them after the stress and ** they are putting us through. I have had several people tell me that their bank calls them when there are suspicious charges on their account. Sometime back, my computer broke down, and I couldn't get it fixed, because i was trying to save up some money for an upcoming surgery that I needed. A good friend of mine offered to help me out, and sent me a check for $500.00. I put the money in the bank (5/3).
By this time my computer had been down for several weeks. I was finally able to get someone to fix it for me. The first thing that I did, was to check on my account balances. That was when I noticed there were several withdrawals made, all within about a week, totaling $1,110 . So, I went to the bank and spoke to some new guy that was just transferred to the Portage Indiana branch, from I believe he said PN. He looked up my statements for the past three months. What he told me next, hit me like a ton of bricks. He said, "well, the way it looks on these statements, you withdrew $1,110 then deposited $500.00, to try to cover some of the withdrawals". I told him "the reason I'm here, is because I know nothing about these withdrawals". He said he would file a report.
From there I went to the Gary, IN police department, and filed a police report. A couple of weeks later, I get this letter from 5/3 Bank telling me that based on their investigation, the withdrawals for the $1,110 were authorized transactions. That was all I got from them. As far as the police department, they said that the gas station where the transactions took place, had no surveillance, so there wasn't much they could do.
I could go on and on about this bank in overdraft fees. I could say, what a joke, but it's not. Enough is enough. I've had it with this bank. Time to switch to a real bank. On July the 6th, I went to 5/3 and asked the teller, I'm here to close my accounts. Do I have to speak to someone in the office, or can you handle that? She said I can take care of that for you. I asked her to check and see if I had anything pending. She looked and said, "no i don't see anything, you're good". So she gave me what money I had in my accounts (about$700.00 or so). He told me to call back and ask him for an extension and an explanation as to how I was going to get the money. This is invasive and intrusive.

My daughter overdrafted by about $16. With overdraft fees, she owed $82.90, and she paid that because it was her fault. She deposited on a Monday and left the bank with an $.80 positive balance. The teller told her she was all set and no more fees would accrue. On Tuesday morning, she got a text message stating she was $113.20 in the hole. When she called the bank, they told her it was overdraft fees from the weekend that didn't hit her account until Monday night. In addition, her 80 cent balance was after her negative balance, her deposit, and a $5.30 ATM transaction. But when they actually posted stuff, they took the overdraft fees out first, then ran the $5.30 ATM charge, creating another overdraft charge. Add in the $8 per day negative balance fee, and she is now at almost $200 in the hole. She will lose almost $300 if we choose to pay it, or have her credit ruined if we don't.

I have been dealing with Fifth Third for three years. I got an auto loan from them; my payments have been slow on several occasions due to divorce and being out of work. About 4 months ago, my car was repossessed by them and I had only missed one payment and the next wasn't even due yet. I had surgery last year and was off 6 weeks with no pay. I had to call all of my creditors to explain the situation. All of them worked with me except Fifth Third.
After calling me repeatedly, I talked with one man who began to insult me. I had been in the hospital and had a cancerous tumor removed and he had the nerve to ask me how I planned on making payments while I was out. Why did I buy a car if I knew I couldn't pay for it? Why don't I sell it since I obviously don't intend on paying for it? I knew I had the note, so why am I telling him that I can't pay it all right now.
Recently I set up automatic payments and apparently the check bounced. They contacted me and I tried to set up payment arrangements. The very sweet young lady said I could pay it out over three payments. I had to call back with my checking account info. The "gentleman" (term I use sarcastically) who answered the phone said I was misinformed and could not set up payment arrangements. The almost $700 was due on the 14th of August. I informed him there was no way I could pay it all then. He informed me they would just come get my car. After all, I had already lost it once, it must not be that important to me.
Fifth Third called back again a few days later. A reasonable young man set up a payment agreement with me spreading July's payment over 4 months. I went last Friday when I got paid and withdrew the almost $700 to send them by Western Union. I was informed that any previous agreement we had with Fifth Third was null and void. I had checks bounce and they could not accept any more checks from me. I had to use Western Union. On Monday, imagine my surprise when I checked my account and it was overdrawn $300.
My regular payment of $385 had been taken out, after being told they would not accept a check from me. When I called to inquire about it, I was told I should have called and put a stop payment on the check! I was told they would not accept my checks. Why would I do that? I am looking into getting a loan with my local bank so I don't have to deal with these crazies any more. Please, do not deal with Fifth Third bank. They will knowingly rip you off and throw it back in your face. I am again in the hole with my bank. I had a small amount to live on for the next week and a half. They would not return the money they stole from me plus the over draft fee from my bank. They said my car was now current. My regular payment of $539.48 is due Sept.14. Mind you, my regular payment is $385.74. I asked about the extra and was told. "That's what you owe!" If I am current, my payment should be the same as always. Maybe it's just me but I am confused!

After repeated attempts and emails for a refinancing deal which Fifth Third suggested I do when I was in the bank 4 weeks ago, I am giving them a huge thumbs down! I've emailed 3 times and stopped by the branch over a 4-week period to just get an update on where things are and what the next steps are. Even after a promise to get back with me by a Personal Banker on Tuesday, July 20, I've never had the courtesy to hear back. It was a horrible treatment of a loyal customer who was attempting to move all their banking accounts, mortgage, car, credit card, etcetera to one bank. When I finally emailed saying I was done with them and going to close all my accounts, I got a terse email saying they were ‘sorry for not meeting my expectations’ which weren't too demanding. I just wanted a reply for my 3 emails and personal visit followed by ‘they would be glad to close my accounts today’.
You get assistance and a reply email within 10 minutes when you want to take away business/revenue and no response when you attempt to give more business/revenue. That's a very interesting business model. I wonder how that will work out for Fifth Third Bank in the long run. As an update, On Friday, July 30, I finally got a call from the branch manager who asked me to please not close all my accounts because he was going to personally get involved and handle this for me. Now that was a week ago, and I still don't know anything. The last thing he said was ‘I promise to get back to you on Friday, July 30’. Well, here it is Friday night and no call!
Another lie, just a higher up in the food chain. Another update, on Saturday, August 1, I've sent 3 ‘internal communications’ through Fifth Third service center and one phone call describing the problems I've had with this situation. Their response is to please go into the bank and talk to them. Are you freaking kidding me? Do you think I want to talk to the same people again who handled me this so poorly? Are they really that clueless at Fifth Third? “Oh yes, please go visit the people that have failed over the past 5 weeks and chat with them". Smell the coffee, get a clue? And stop asking me to ‘go do more’ when I'm the damn customer! Remember the days when it was ‘You’re the customer, we're the vendor. It's all about you’. That lesson has been totally lost on Fifth Third Bank. Again, an update, On Monday, August 2, there was still no call from the manager as promised. This is an amazing experience at Fifth Third Bank. Please help me spread the word to avoid this merchant! Thanks everyone for your support.
Update again, On Tuesday, August 10, although I've not gotten a call from the original bank manager, I have gotten a great associate at a nearby branch to take on my case. He's been working for a couple of weeks now to remedy this horrible situation and has actually remembered to email and call when he should. The bad news now is because of their screw up, the loan papers have been in so long in order to continue without promise that they will do a home appraisal. I have to have another credit bureau run against me. Now, we all know what hitting your bureaus does. It lowers your credit score. So, they are screwed up besides costing me time, energy and stress, they have the nerve to ask that I allow them to hit my credit score again. Someone in management at Fifth Third Bank has obviously fallen and smacked their little head on the pavement to keep making these types of decisions.
Bottom line is, I'm turning this over to my attorney and he can deal with Fifth Third Bank. I also am checking into Illinois State Banking laws to see if their failure to process a loan in an appropriate amount of time would constitute me having to have another credit report pulled. I don't think they can do that when they fail. Now, if I'd dragged my feet that would be another story. Ah, thank God for attorneys and courts. Final update, on August 13, I finally got to talk to someone at the corporate who deals with the OCC and Shirley **** is looking into what happened and is pursuing this further. Meanwhile, I've filed complaints with the Illinois Attorney General, the Ohio Attorney General, the OCC (Office of the Comptroller of Currency) and the FDIC. I'm thinking some should come of this eventually and maybe it will teach Fifth Third Bank a lesson!

I have had accounts with Fifth Third bank for over 15 years with out problems. I have never bounced a check in my life. This year, I suffered a series of 3 personal injuries that devastated my finances. I had a $2,500 debt on an American Express business account. At one time I had made a payment on the American Express account using my Fifth Third personal checking account, because the item was personal. American Express sent an illegal unauthorized bank draft to Fifth Third against my personal checking account for $2,500 when I in fact only had $600 in the account. Fifth Third then immediately overdrafted my my account by the $1,900 and began charging me $33 per day. 2 days later, when I found out about the illegal bank draft I immediately called Fifth Third to dispute the item.
I then had to go to the nearest branch to talk to a manager. They had me return the following day to fill out a dispute form. I filled out the form. 3 days later I got a denial of my dispute. Fifth Third said I would have had to revoke the transaction before it posted to my account. How in the hell can someone revoke an authorized bank draft before it posts? It is not possible. So day after day Fifth Third goes right on charging me fees, calling and harassing me every day with people from the Philippines! Meanwhile I appeal the dispute in writing, sending a dozen copies to SVP Coleman and to the main bank.
I also go in to talk with the bank manager again. He now says since I opened my account at another branch (15 years ago, when I lived in another town) that that branch manager was going to handle it. Fifth Third is now asserting that I owe them the money, plus the overdraft fees and will not remove the overdraft fees. I have no income to pay for this pending disability claims. I did not authorize the bank draft. But Fifth Third wants to rape me financially. What evil p**s!

Fifth Third is not only charging overdraft fees, they now are charging a fee after three days of your account being in the negative regardless of whether you have pending transactions or not. I was charged $24 and $32 for having a negative balance without any pending transactions. I called Customer Service to find out why and explained my husband is recently unemployed and I get paid bi-weekly so we couldn't cover it until I get paid. They said that their policy is to charge your account after three days on a daily basis. So I borrowed the money to cover the $24 and $32 so I wouldn't keep getting charged. This seems like robbery and doesn't even seem legal.

I have been an account holder with your bank for over 25 years but have come to the conclusion that my business may need to be moved elsewhere. I am so frustrated at this point with Fifth Third Bank and how you have handled a particular situation with my checking account.
In the year 2001 I applied for overdraft protection at the local bank that I do business with and was informed it would take effect immediately. My understanding was that I was covered until in 2009 I received a state in the mail that my account was overdrawn and I owed over $800 in overdraft fees. I instantly visited the local bank that I did business with and explained to the manager that I should have had coverage on my account and that I should owe the fees Fifth Third was asking. She reviewed my account and noticed that my application was never submitted for some reason. She apologized for the mix up and agreed to credit my account $384. She then updated my information in the system, resubmitted my application, and assured me the coverage was now in place.
A week or two later I received a credit card in the mail with a credit limit of $1,000 that was connected to my overdraft protection. I paid the balance of the overdraft fees reluctantly because I felt more could have been done. For one, the fee would have been $10 instead of $37 for each check, and there were a number of checks that cleared that day for small amounts and one larger check. They could have allowed the small amount checks to go through and only have the one check to bounce, but they cleared the large check first and then bounced all the other checks.
In 2010 I had more checks to bounce and the statement I received showed once again that I did not have overdraft protection because the charges were the same as before. I went to my local bank and explained once again that I should have had overdraft protection and the fees should not be as much as what the statement was indicating. The bank manager review my account once again and informed me she could not do anything this time because she had already credited my account in the past for the same purpose. She apologized for the mix up and stated she did not understand why it was not approved for coverage. She called the main branch and spoke with someone who assured her it would be taken care of. I paid the requested overdraft fee of $185 reluctantly once again.
It is now August of 2010 and I was reviewing my statement and checking my checks that had not yet cleared when I noticed a check from April of this year that had not yet cleared so I called customer service to make sure it had not been cashed and that Fifth Third Bank had not transposed the check number as they had done in the past. While I had the representative on the phone, I asked her to check and make sure the credit card was active and the overdraft protection was in place.
Guess what! My account was not covered with overdraft protection and needless to say I was furious. I lashed out at the representative I was speaking to and was ready to go close my account right then. I check my accounts regularly and every time I call, the system tells me what my checking account balance is and that "The balance on your credit card is zero dollars and zero cents" which in my mind meant the credit card was active and ready to do its job.
I am not one to bounce checks on a regular basis nor do I allow my account to go unpaid once I discover my account is overdrawn. Unfortunately in 2008 I was diagnosed with cancer and eventually had to quit my job so that is why I began having a little difficulty with my account. Whenever I receive notice of my account being in trouble, I handle it immediately. I can't say the same thing about Fifth Third Bank because you guys have handled this poorly. The bottom line and purpose of this letter is to inform you of what an awful job Fifth Third has done in rectifying the situation and to share my horrible experience. I would also like to request that you review my account history and see where you can properly compensate me for your errors. I have given the bank so much money in overdraft fees that should not have been paid or asked of me.

I had a Fifth Third bank account for about two years and paid over $4,000 in overdraft fees. My job did not offer direct deposit and was living paycheck to paycheck. When bills needed to be paid, they would go against my check on the day or days after it had been deposited. Because of a hold or for whatever reason, I would get changed fee after fee which caused the next pay and bills to be off. There were months that I could not catch up because of numerous fees that were being paid out to this bank. Compounded fees I feel are unfair, especially when my check was in my account. The ends were never meeting and the fees pushed me back even further, causing a chain reaction of fees every month one way or another.

I transferred money into my son's account before I allowed him to run a few errands for me. I transferred $100 into his account because I needed items from Wal-Mart. After transferring the funds, it showed an available balance for almost $120. In turn, he went on to make 3 purchases for less than $120. Fifth Third overdrew the account as if I never transferred the funds or basically if he had made those transactions against negative funds which is fraudulent. Many attempts were made to allow them to reverse the charges since it was their error because I clearly transferred the monies and have available funds to cover my transaction. They simply talked in a very condescending manner advising me not to make purchases when funds are not available.
Again, I explained the entire situation again, advising funds were available and this was a mistake on their end. So I asked the manager who can I complain to higher up and he replied,"None. " I felt totally disrespected that they were allowed to basically defraud me and that nothing could be done. After remembering another key factor, I phrased to them the when I transferred the money that it appears the transaction took place in a different timezone than mine, yet it shows me the funds are available. A branch manager I spoke to today confirmed that all of their transactions are in EST but that doesn't matter. How does he figure that? Immediately after I transferred money into my son's account, I had him to go make purchase. Did I mention I am in CST? If that is so, then my transfer is being recorded an hour or so after my system is showing me the money is available, so yes, it is their fault.
If their system is not programmed to adjust time zones, then this could definitely pose a problems such as funds not being available like you thought they were. I believe Fifth Third is knowledgeable of this and are purposely misleading their customers.

I attempted to cash a client of mine's business check written in the amount of $200.00 and drawn on an eight year old account of Fifth Third Bank. The check # 1420, was properly made out to me and in my name. When I handed the check and my ID to the teller, she asked if I had an account with them. I stated that I was not a client of their bank. The teller explained that a $10 fee would be accessed/charged. I agreed and handed her my Illinois State ID card. She told me that they could not accept my ID because it had expired on my birthday July 6th, 2010. She told me that I would not be able to cash my check there because any new ID I would obtain would not meet their policy minimum standard of being at least 90 days old.
I explained my predicament to the Art Center Director I was working for. I took the check back to The Director and she went to the bank and made out a Bank Money Order for me in the same amount. I went to The Secretary of State Office and renewed my State ID card. I took the Money Order back to the bank. The same Teller was on duty. She made the comment as I approached the window, "oh you're back". I said, "yes madam, but I have valid current ID and a Money Order instead of a check". She said, " I still can't cash that". She stated that my ID was not old enough and I did not have an account with their bank. I asked to speak with a supervisor.
She was very arrogant, but with a nonchalant "this is not going to do you any good", type attitude, asked me to have seat, and went to get a supervisor. I sat and was approached after about 7-10 min by young gentleman. I showed the young man my ID and explained my situation. Although I was agitated and aggravated, I did not use profanity or disrespect anyone at anytime. The Bank's Security Officer was present and did not have to ask me to leave or lower my voice. I was a complete gentleman at all times when speaking with both the female teller and Vice President Erik R. C. The gentleman quoted me Bank Policy. Bank Policy that was not posted. The VP Asked me why I didn't have a bank account with them or somewhere else. I Showed him multiple forms of ID including: Gov VA Picture ID, Valid State of Illinois ID, Social Security Card, Illinois LINK with dated and addressed letter from Dept of Human Services, Unemployment Visa Debit Card with letter from Main Office.
Mr. ** was quoted as saying "They've made it bad for everyone. " I asked him who "they" were and he stated "those people that would commit bank fraud by obtaining phony ID's. " I felt as if he were insinuating that I had somehow illegally obtained an ID. I am outraged. I was insulted, humiliated and completely disrespected. I should have traveled the eight - ten miles out of my way to the same branch I had cashed a check before. I incorrectly thought this branch would be more convenient since it was closer. I would hate to believe that there is a difference in policy and service at different branches of a major bank chain based on ethic, or racial clientele, however, due to the ease by which I was able to cash a similar check at a branch in a more ethnically diverse neighborhood, I would have to conclude that there is a difference.
I am a divorced parent of three boys, whom I spend time with on the weekends. My plans to spend time with my boys was ruined, because I needed the money to pay for the Baseball tickets I had planned to take them to Saturday that weekend. I spent the majority of two days traveling on public transportation in 90 plus degree heat, standing in long lines at The Sec of State DMV to cash a check at the bank it was drawn on. I had to postpone other business appointments and reschedule personal dates.

I am writing, after extreme disappoint and repeated attempts to get our account with Fifth Third Banks corrected. We have been customers of Fifth Third Bank since 1999. My husband was a customer prior to that while living in Cincinnati. We have always enjoyed the convenience of having the banking centers and we have established a very nice rapport with our banking service employees. They are wonderful but they can only do so much to assist us.
The main issue started when we transferred a higher interest credit card to our 5/3 Platinum Account ending in ** in April 2010. The rate quoted was 5.99% for a designated amount of time with the convenience checks. There is no mention on any of the printed materials that the fees associated with that balance transfer would be payable on the first statement. Our statement came after the transfer and we were hit with a $914.00 minimum payment and 10.99% interest instead of what was advertised. We had to pull this money out our saving account, which is also housed at Fifth Third to pay this outrageous amount. We actually have five accounts with Bank.
If they could take a few minutes to look at the statements associated beginning with the April billing, they can see where we had actually been charged the cash advance rate/fees along with Convenience check fees. There are so many transactions on the April statement that you can barely make sense of it. We called customer service four times in May on this issue and then again in June, and we got our statement. The rate charged is shown at 10.99%, so we called again twice to once again get it corrected.
We were told that it would be credited and everything would be fixed. No such luck, the interest was then changed to 7.99%, not the 5.99%. Then again today, July 16, we receive the statement; nothing has actually been credited and we are still showing at 10.99% on our statement but the customer service representative for card services states that is not what we're being charged. So, why would interest be calculated on that amount and why isn't the 5.99% being shown?
Enough is enough. We have been customers for a very long time and it deeply saddens me that customer service representatives handle these matters as they have. We may only be one customer to your organization but we have decided, after repeated attempts with our Platinum account, to move our accounts to another financial institution - our installment loan account ending in **, account ending in **, and the account ending **, along with our checking and savings.

I did not believe what was happening to me until I read similar complaints on this site. I would call the bank before each transaction (I make maybe one a day) and the automated service would give me a positive balance. I come to find out I will have $270 in overdrafts for the $1.00 Redbox movie rentals I made, $37 each. I told the manager that I called and she said pending transactions are posted at the end of the day. So why did the system tell me I still had a positive balance two days after I supposedly had insufficient funds? The most expensive thing on the charge was $8.95. The $270 will be overdraft charges, not principal costs. That was paid when they took my paycheck, which was directly deposited. Now, I am being charged overdraft on the remaining overdraft charges.
On a prior issue, it is true that they will pay the highest amount debit, and hit you with $37 overdraft for all the little things that were submitted earlier in the day. Funny how they can post your debits right away, fails to report your available funds correctly, and bill you for their 'mistake'. I have to switch banks now as I get direct deposits from two different company checks. This might delay my payment by 20 - 30 days. I think I will just get a safe and pay cash from now on.

Bank is still holding funds today (7/8) for a transaction that I made at TGI Friday's on July 3. Although they have also credited the same transaction against my account on 7/6. In other words it is a double charge and the funds are still not available, and won't be available until next Tuesday. For something that is not my fault, and I didn't even know.
If I had not checked online, I would have assumed I had more $$, perhaps spent into it, become "overdrawn" and charged $33 + $8/day until OD is corrected. Amount they're holding from TGIs would probably just about cover it. So I'd end up with nothing, because of something someone else did.
When I called, customer service said TGI made a mistake and I had to wait 3-5 days for my funds to be released or I could call the TGIs, have someone go back into their records, find the transactions mistake and give them a special authorization number so they could call 5/3 and they could release the funds today. Yeah, right, like that's going to happen in today's understaffed restaurant industry. So basically they know it's a mistake, they know it's a double-charge, and yet, had I spent even one penny of it, they would have hit me with an OD fee.
It's how they milk OD fees from people. It is no wonder that so many people have no relationship with banks and cash their checks at Giant Eagle and buy money orders. It may be a bit more trouble but it could actually save some people hundreds of dollars per year in these outlandish fees.

Hello, I got a vehicle for a son four years ago and the vehicle was financed through Fifth Third Bank. Tim, my son, paid the payments on the vehicle and would sometimes get behind on payments. Tim would eventually make the payment and Tim offered to double-up on payments. The person representing the bank was always very rude and whenever Tim tried to pay early the bank people hassled my son. The vehicle was attained in my name, however, the son made payments the best way he could.
Fifth Third Bank may have assumed that they, the bank, employees of the bank were being snubbed as I never spoke to bank representatives via telephone. I avoided speaking to Fifth Third Bank on the phone because I knew the rude people would make me upset. I made the mistake of getting the vehicle financed with people from a bank who conduct business in such a pitiful way. This family pays it's bills and please Lord, allow us to get this monkey off our backs! I wouldn't hesitate to get involved in a class-action lawsuit against against the thugs; I've read various other stories about 5/3 bank and we would like to make a clean break away from the bank.
Back early in May, an insurance company settled and supposedly paid off 5/3 bank, however, the bank now says we owe $134.19 in finance charges. The person who called last Sunday morning threatened to turn me over to collections and also my credit would be affected. I told the person that I'm unemployed and she needs to talk to my son about paying the finance charge. Moreover, my son is also unemployed so it's obvious that I will have to eat the bill. It doesn't seem right, how these people do business as money is hard to come by. Is there a way out of paying these people and letting 5/3 bank have the satisfaction of me giving in. Fifth Third Bank made a lot of money off the vehicle. Furthermore, the vehicle was reprocessed in May 2008. I had to take off from work and drive to another state and pay $193.50 to get the car back. The money (payment) was there at the bank and they said they couldn't find the money. The car was seized as Tim was having the car serviced. Please use this writing, as maybe it could help someone else. Contact us if you wish and this nightmare will not be over anytime soon. Thanks for any consideration.

On June 5, 2010, I went online to set up an external transfer account between Fifth Third Bank and Another Bank. This was just setting up this kind of account to assist me if I ever needed to transfer funds. I was on the Fifth Third website at this time. I kept on watching my Another Bank account to see if my paycheck came in so that I could start paying bills. I noticed on Sunday, June 6, 2010 that there was a withdraw of $503 from my Another Bank account. I thought possibly there was some kind of mix up and that Fifth Third somehow took out $$503. I then went to the Fifth Third site to see that $503 was also taken out of that account, which was very surprising seeing I had about $8 in my Fifth Third account to begin with.
On Monday June 7, 2010, I went to Another Bank and Fifth Third Bank to dispute these withdrawals. Both banks informed me that I had to wait until June 8th to dispute the withdrawals due to the fact they were still pending. The banker at Fifth Third told me to give her my card and she cut it up. The bankers filled out the paperwork and at Another Bank, the gentleman I spoke to was just going to send it in on 6/8/10. At Fifth Third, the banker faxed the paper to a different branch for me to sign to send in on 6/8/10. I then waiting, being informed that it usually takes 10 to 14 business days for a response.
On June 12, 2010, I went to an Another Bank in Bridgeview to ask them if they could look up to see if there was any activity on my account. I was informed there was not. The banker told me that I may want to put in a police report if I have not so far. I put in a report on 6/16/10. I did not know previous to being told if I was suppose to put a report in. I believe it was on June 15, 2010 that I called Fifth Third and Another Bank to find out if there was any activity from their fraud, or whatever departments. I was informed that they have not heard anything so far.
On June 16, 2010, I went to the police station to put in a report. I did not put a report in earlier because I was not sure if I was suppose to, and once told that it would be a good idea, I thought I had to put it in during regular office hours. On June 22, 2010, Another Bank had given me a provisional credit of $453. I went to Fifth Third Bank to find out what is going on at their end. Nicole, branch manager, called the dispute department and had to leave a message for a Leonard (he was out of the office). I was told that the banker would call me once she spoke with Leonard.
On June 23, 2010, I called customer service at 800-972-3030 and spoke with a John. He in turn put me on hold while he called Leonard from disputes. When John came back on the line, he informed me that my dispute was denied because I used the ATM card on 6/6/10. I did go to Ultra on 6/6/10 and I did have my ATM card but I was unaware of the fraudulent activity on the card. I was very unpleasant to that John. He informed that it was denied on 6/9/10 and that they sent me a letter explaining that. I never received such a letter. John told me I could go back and dispute it again.
On June 23, 2010, I was called by the customer service call center. I called back, spoke with a Megan about 2:15 pm. She informed she could not help me with any resolution. She put me on hold while she called dispute department. She came back on the line to inform me that they are gone for the day. Megan told me to call the branch that I opened up the account at. That is the only branch that I have been dealing with, except for the time, I had to sign the dispute letter, which did get sent back to my original branch to be submitted. Megan also told me my original branch has the same information the dispute dept. has but in times past, when I spoke with my branch via phone or in person, they did not have information. I was transferred to my original branch. The person I spoke to could not help me. When I asked to speak with the branch manager, they were in a meeting. I then asked to speak to a different banker, and was told she just left for lunch. A message was left for the banker to call me back but I had to leave my house at 5:15 pm that day.
On June 26, 2010, I called customer service at Fifth Third on what I need to do. I spoke with an Ashley, who informed me what I need to do to put in another dispute, and that the original dispute just stated I am disputing the ATM withdrawal. I drove to the Fifth Third bank and spoke with the banker Elda, who was the first banker I spoke with at Fifth Third when this all started. She sent in another dispute letter with a typed statement from me. She asked me if I have the card still. I told her that she cut it up when I had come into her office on 6/7/10. She put on the dispute letter that I have the card, but then explained to me, that meant that I had the card when this fraudulent act occurred. She gave me a copy of the letter that I supposedly was sent on the 9th of June.
I am at a lost on what to do. I have tried to be patient and rectify this matter to the best of my ability but I am having a very hard time, especially not knowing what exactly happened, and how someone was able to withdraw monies from two accounts, and make it looked like a pinned transaction. I moved about a year ago, so I have to travel about one hour each way each time I go to talk with Fifth Third Bank, so that I communicate with the one branch I opened my account at. I am being called by Fifth Third Bank automated system 2 to 3 times a day. When I call back, they tell me they will take me off the call list. My account is now negative over $700 due to the overdraft fees they add on daily.

I made a mistake and was overdrawn $264. They charged a daily fee of $10 and an overdraft fee of $25. I have over draft protection, but they insisted that they had lowered my over draft availability from $500 to $250 (a cash advance, they call it). I don't have anything that says this would be lowered. Anyway, my husband's direct deposit was going to come in the next morning (and they know this; our pay has been directly deposited for years). Later as I looked at my account I see that the over draft fees, etc., were charged the same day as the direct deposit and guess which one is first? Not the deposit which would have taken care of everything and brought me back to a positive balance, but the fees and withdrawal on my over draft protection! They must have sales goals and the criteria involve every little slip someone makes. Their motto should be "Anything to make a buck".

A customer of 5/3 bank had written a check for me made out to cash. I went to the bank and was told that the bank charges 5 dollars to cash this bank. It is beyond me how this bank became a partner in this transaction between the parties. They hold money for party one, making interest on that money. Party A gives to party B a cash check for $100.00. The bank then takes 5% of that transaction in the form of a 5 dollar fee. How did that bank become a partner in this transaction? Is party A responsible to reimburse party B for that charge? I only went to this bank to see about starting an account there. Of course I will not do that now and also I will not accept checks from that bank without the 5 dollar fee in advance. Wachovia did this charging 5 dollar thing for a while and no longer does this practice in my area.

I opened this account with Fifth Third back in Feb. of 2010. So far my account has been current until Charter Communications went in to my account to take fees that I did not authorize, which cause my account to be overdrawn. The customer service rep told me to go into the banking center and dispute it and that they would most certainly replace my over draft fees that were taken out of the account from my direct deposits which happens to be my unemployment that I live off. So far that has not happened, so I check my account yesterday because I have a few bills to pay and I want to make sure the money is there to take care of these bills only to find that my account has again been overdrawn from the same company!
The customer service rep was very rude. So I asked to speak to her supervisor who was even nastier than she was! So I was supposed to get another unemployment payment today but they took that also. Now I don’t have any money to do anything with and all they can say is, "There is no way for us to protect you against this type of thing." What does that mean?! The overdraft fees are ridiculous and they are charging me $33.00 for items I paid for that they are now claiming they paid! If I knew it would be this way, I would have never even dealt with them. Needless to say I’ve moved on to Regions Bank, but this is just wrong, what they have done They are charging overdraft fees on top of overdraft fees and they created them They charge for transactions that I’ve paid for but somehow they turn it around to say they paid for it! This bank needs to be closed; it’s I live off of unemployment and I receive it via direct deposit. This bank took two weeks of deposits and my refund money for attending school. I have 5 kids and now I don’t have any money to pay bills or do anything.

I had a small overdraft and when I checked my on-line bank statement, I put in more than enough money to cover it. Next day I checked my statement and to my surprise, I was over drafted again. I once again deposited money to cover and was in the positive. This happened yet again until finally I had no more money to deposit. I called their 800 number and explained the situation and her reply was that if I didn't deposit $55.00 by days end, they would once again charge me overdraft charges on my overdraft charges. I stopped using this account and they kept right on charging me until the account got to $450.00 in the negative. These are all overdraft charges on their own charges. Then when I tried to set up a checking account with another bank, they sent them something from checks systems and the new bank said they could not keep me. This is fraud and now I have no bank to write checks to pay my bills. I can barely sleep at night this has been a nightmare.

I had a checking account with Fifth Third Bank. I was given an Early Access account with a $500 limit. I was able to transfer money into my checking from this account if I needed it. I transferred $200 on a Sunday from the Early Access Account. The checking account balance reflected the new balance immediately. The next day Fifth Third bounced a check I had written saying the Early Access transfer do not post immediately on the weekends. That is not true. I have done this on the weekends before and this has never happened. I have transferred money from the Early Access to my checking and went to the ATM and got cash on the weekend. To make matters worse, I used my debit card the Saturday prior. I made approximately seven purchases.
On Sunday, those purchases were pending and the money was taken out of my account. On Monday, Fifth Third charged me an overdraft fee for all the transactions from Saturday. One transaction was a withdrawal from a Fifth Third ATM. I used my pin number with most of the other Saturday debit card transactions. I received a receipt with an approval code. I don’t understand how they can reverse the approvals and charge me overdraft fees. Instead of fighting with them, I opened another account at another bank and stopped my direct deposits with Fifth Third. I could not afford to pay them. I currently owe approximately $700. I would like to be apart of the class action lawsuit filed against Fifth Third Bank.

I have been a Fifth Third Bank customer for over 25 years. My husband used to bank with them also, but after he had a few negative experiences on his business accounts, he transferred all his business to another bank. I insisted on keeping my Fifth Third account as it was known, convenient, and I was resisting change. In the last two years, I have had a few experiences that have now made me want to close my account.
The first was how they processed pending transactions that resulted in two overdraft fees. I admittedly did not have funds for one of the transactions... deposit went in a day late. But, they way they processed the Pending Transactions, they say, made me not have enough money for both. With a bit of arguing, they did agree to drop one overdraft fee as I had never had a problem with my account before. Next came the time when they refused a check written to me by my husband for deposit because it didn't have the date on it. I asked if I could add the date and they said no. My husband would have to come to do it. I took the check back, dated it and took it to another branch for deposit. Now, I am angry beyond measure and will be closing my account at the earliest convenience. My husband wrote a check to me from his bank to cover our monthly household bills. He has done this every month for the last 15 years. This time, however, they put a hold on the deposit. I deposited the check on June 3rd.
On June 4th, I checked my balance on-line and the deposit was there. So, I started paying bills on-line. Then, I noticed yesterday that my balance was very low. I checked and they now have my last deposit as pending. Fortunately, I had enough money in my account to cover most of the bills. However, I made other payments that will come in today. I called the bank and they told me that my deposit will not come off hold until Friday, June 11th. So, anything that comes in will result in an overdraft. I can go today and deposit cash to try to avoid this. I asked her why it was being held as my husband called his bank and they said there was no hold or problem on their end. They said it is their standard procedure to hold checks if you don't have enough money in your account to cover the check until they actually have their money in hand. I said it seemed like a long time to hold a deposit and wondered why it had never happened to me in the last 20 years. So, unless I come up with a whole lot of cash today, I will have many overdraft fees tomorrow.

I have had too many experiences regarding the unethical practices of Fifth Third to list. On many, many occasions, the bank would deduct my debits and charge my overdraft and then put in my deposit. Even my cash had a waiting period to clear. I was with First Charter prior to being bought out by Fifth Third and they too, did the same unethical practices as Fifth Third. If there's ever a class action suit, put me at the head of the line. I can dig out all my paperwork.

Fifth Third's document processing policy seems specifically designed to cause excessive overdraft fees for their customers. On 6/2/10, I had an available balance of approximately $90 which I checked using online banking before I spent $12 to put gas in my motorcycle and $8 to buy cigarettes.
That night, a check in the amount of $273 (which I had forgotten about) presented which put my account into overdraft. Fifth Third charged me 3 overdraft fees in the amount of $33 each, for a total of $99! There were verified sufficient funds in the account to cover the $8 and $12 transactions before they took place.
I called the bank and agreed that I was responsible for the $273 check and was willing to accept the overdraft fee for that transaction. As a single incident, the fee should have been $25. They would only reverse one of the charges, resulting in 2 remaining overdraft fees for $33 each.
Obviously, this cost me $66 when it should only have been $25. It feels almost silly complaining about $41 but the original charge was $99 and it seems this bank's system is specifically designed to cause this type of situation.

The same issue that it seems everyone else has a sorry bank. I used my debit card over a holiday weekend had the money in bank to cover debits. If not the transactions would not have been approved. Then the Tuesday after the holiday a check came through from time Warner cable another issue in itself but, back to fifth third bank. The money had come out of my account for those debit transaction so, on that Tuesday the check came through in which it appeared the bank paid and charged a $37 dollar fee. Ok I understand but, then what happen the next day the bank did not pay the check and not only that they had charged me 37 x6 for the debits that had already been taken out of my account.
So, I basically paid double for the debit, which money was in the account for the debits and a return check fee. From reading other complaints this is the banks practice. They pay the big items first. This is garbage. The money that you had in your account to use the debit to me was set aside to pay for. This is a bank that I do not see how they stay in business and treat customer bad. No customer service at this bank at all. Do I need to say more? Oh, however I will say out of all the fees that where charged I was able to get 74 of it back. Wow. That’s really saying a lot for this bank. Bad feeling about this bank. If you have an option to choose another bank I would. PSS. Look at their stock mmm. Economic hardship. It cost me $251 dollars. When things are tight already this kind of issue just put things even more of an economic hardship. Cannot even make ends meet now. This just makes things worst.

My pension check was deposited for years in Fifth Third Bank via electronic deposit. This occurs on the last business day of the month. They now subtract debits from my checking account before they add credits and on the last day of April, 2010, I was overdrawn by about $0.55 for which they charged a late fee of $33 even though my check for over $2,400 should have been deposited before the overdraft. They would not reverse the overdraft fee and I cancelled my account and changed my electronic deposit to another bank. Since it takes 45 days to transfer electronic deposits to another bank, my pension check was mailed to me and was lost in the mail and I received it over 20 days later which made me late on my Fifth Third Mortgage payment for which they charged $55 in late fees.
On May 28, I used bill pay from my new bank to pay my Fifth Third Mortgage for June. I live about an hours drive from Fifth Third's closest branch. On June 3, they called and wanted to know where my June payment was and I told them they would receive it on June 4. On June 4, they called again and demanded payment for June even though it was not technically late. I called their toll free number to complain about the second call and discovered that their collection department was located in the Philippines. I could barely understand the person I talked with and he wanted all types of personal info that the bank already had on file. I have been banking with Fifth Third Bank for many years and they have changed drastically during the last several months. They put fees on top of fees.

I firmly believe that the way Fifth Third Bank practices needs to be thoroughly investigated. For one, they need to realize that nobody is made out of money. Nobody has $148 in unnecessary fees to pay as a result of an overdraft that resulted in a negative balance of $.14. That is just ridiculous! Plus considering the economy right now, you would think that they would consider that we are struggling enough as it is to make ends meet. Why complicate matters even more? Obviously, they are taking it to their advantage by charging excessive fees from their customers for no good reason. My boyfriend started banking with Fifth Third Bank about 6 or 7 months ago. He has had nothing but problems since he started banking with them which has resulted in well over $600 in overdraft fees.
I finally talked him into closing out his account yesterday. Here is the latest scenario. He deposited his work check on Saturday, May 29th. As usual it didn't post right away. I never understood why they did this, but I have worked there some years ago and I think back then it had something to do with them not being "online", therefore, the transactions don't post right away. But with Credit Unions and even another bank that I am banking with right now, I have never experienced a problem with them holding my checks for any amount of time. Unless, of course, it's some sort of loan check or a large personal check or a large check issued out of another state, etc. Usually my experience has been once I make a deposit, it shows right away in my account, especially with local "well known" business checks. I don't understand why they don't post them right away.
But even if, the amount shows "pending" in your account. So, why penalize someone for a fee(s) when it's apparent that they have a credit waiting to post the account? Fifth Third would rather clear your debits, checks, etc. before posting the check. Then they turn around and post the check right after you hit the customers up for multiple overdraft fees. They could have simply posted the check first if they cared about a business-customer relationship. Apparently they don't. Anyway, back to what I was saying about the latest situation. Before he deposited his check he had money in there enough to cover some debits that he made over the weekend.
Of course because of the Memorial Day holiday ,the bank wasn't open on Monday. So over the weekend, he used his debit card three times. Mind you, he had the money in there to cover these three charges. He has an automatic debit being pulled from his account on the last day of each month from a credit card lender. Again, because of the holiday, the debit payment wasn't set to clear until the first business day after the holiday. So, yesterday, he went to the bank to deposit another check from his second job and to withdraw money out to pay on his rent, only to be surprised that his balance was considerably lower than he had calculated. So he asked for a printout of his account.
It turns out the three smaller charges (according to the statement) cleared first. So, of course, his actual available balance showed a decrease after each transaction. After those clearly already cleared, the 4th and largest transaction tried to clear. Since they hadn't posted his check, yet that transaction bounced. Although I still do not agree with their process, I would understand if he just got charged the one overdraft fee. But to his astonishment, they then turned around and pushed that transaction through before the other three (after it clearly showed on the statement that the other three cleared first) and he was not only charged with one overdraft fee but four totaling $148!
Now, please, someone tell me how that business practice is ethical? You would think that they would be more concerned with how to alleviate as many overdraft fees as possible to keep that business-customer friendly relationship, by making sure the smaller amounts cleared first. But no, instead, they did the total opposite. They lost a customer b/c of how they operate. Then when he talked to the gentleman to close his account, my boyfriend asked how that occurred when it shows that the other three cleared first. The bank employee told him that what the bank does is take the largest transaction and clear it first, which in turn bounces all the transactions and you get hit with a fee for each one. But theoretically, that makes absolutely no sense at all! I bet you that had he had the money in there showing available and enough in there to cover any transactions and the same situation would have occurred, that they would have posted the transaction exactly how they came in - the smaller ones first and then the one that follows (which in this case is the larger one). I mean, why would they switch it around if the money was available? Oh yeah, that's right. They have no opportunity to make any money off their customers in that situation.
So why even bother? I know this was a lot of information, but I have been bothered by this since yesterday. They reimbursed one of his fees and I feel like that's only because he caught on to how backwards their practice is. They really should have reimbursed 3 out of 4 of those fees. Well, considering that the three debits, credit card payment, and check all posted within minutes of each other, I think he should have gotten all 4 of the fees reimbursed. They should have posted his check and then cleared all the debits. That would have been the logical and ethical thing to do.
In conclusion, he told them that the next time he opens up an account at a bank he is going to have a clear understanding with the bank what their guidelines and policy are. He wants it spelled out in black and white so he is not hit with something new that he didn't know every other month.
The bottom line is, Fifth Third is more concerned about their pockets than how to serve their customers reasonably and to keep them happy. They are absolutely the worse bank to deal with. As another posting that I read from another dissatisfied customer regarding Fifth Third's practices stated "Their name is only a fraction. Therefore, they only do a fraction of the work. " I think that summed it right up.

My husband deposits a $20 check. My husband asked Callen if he needed .60 cents as well and Callen told him the account was now fine and no fees have incurred. Thurs. May 27, I try to pull out $18. The teller told me I was overdraft by $52, Now, this is all from the .60 cents.
Now, wait a minute. Callen stated on Monday the account was in good standing. I went to that branch again and I and my husband talked to Callen. He said the fees didn't show up until May 26th? By the time this is all done and said, I am in the whole for $52 and the $20 check that was deposited. I ended up speaking to a manager Ryan **. He told me my account is handled by the Stadium District branch where I never opened my accounts, but he could fax over my fee refund request. Okay, so my husband brings in $52 within 2 hours of my meeting with Ryan **. He waits in the waiting room for half an hour and Ryan is busy with a customer.
So, I leave a message for Ryan yesterday at 1pm, no response. I emailed Ryan this morning with no response. I call again today at 2pm and Ryan is still busy. They all make excuses for each other at this branch. Like he hasn't had just 1 minute to call me back or email me, but I guarantee he got to eat and use the bathroom, socialize a little. Don't give me that, I used to work Customer Service where we had to respond within 1 business day. Whatever happened to good customer service? I even told him I was considering closing all 5 of my accounts, and he along with the other manager acted like they cared, they only said before I do that, I need to give them $52 (taken care of yesterday).
They just want more money! I guarantee if I called saying I wanted to invest a million dollars right now, Ryan ** would call me back or get on the phone right away! Not only that people, look at Fifth Third's rating! It is scary low! I am going to close all accounts now, I have had it! I'll take my business elsewhere! Oh, by the way, I got my courtesy call that the account was overdraft yesterday from Sandi at my original branch around 3pm after they made $72. Isn't that nice? In late April, I received a call from the fraud department at Fifth Third Bank concerning pending charges that were made that morning after I had checked my account online. I told the bank representative that none of the charges were authorized and had my card canceled and a new one sent. I was also told that I could not dispute the charges because they had not been processed. I was told to continue checking everyday - which is what I normally do anyway - and once the charges were processed, I could dispute them.
The next day, I noted that the charges were still pending but I had been charged over $200 in overdraft fees. When I called the bank, I was told that I was charged these fees because if the pending charges had gone through, I would have been short in my account. I said that I wanted to dispute the charges but was told I still couldn't. After speaking with a supervisor and telling him that this practice was unethical, the charges were reversed. The next day I was charged $39.00 in overdraft fees and had to go through the same process. The charges never went through and finally dropped from my account.
This past Saturday, I deposited a check and made some purchases. I checked my account on Monday as I normally do and found that I was in the positive. Tuesday morning, everything from the weekend posted including the check that was deposited Saturday and I was still in the positive. Today, I found that I have been charged $296 because they made only $100 available to me on Saturday and although everything was processed Tuesday morning after midnight, Fifth Third wanted to say that I would have been short Monday because they had not released all of the funds from the check deposited on Saturday.
I'm finding that Fifth Third assesses charges based on "if's" and not actuality. This in addition to rude customer service personnel are totally disillusioning me about this bank. (I had one service representative tell me that I needed to use a bank log to keep track of my charges which I already do and another tell me that I do not check my account as regularly as I do. We were given our payoff in Dec 2009, paid off the loan cash in full that day. We were told the title would take at least 8 weeks, no problem. In March, we received a letter telling us to pay $137.48 and we could have our title. Huh? We ignored the letter and the following week, we called Fifth Third and was told there was a computer error in March and found we still owed money. I said "No! You don't give a payoff and then 4 months later come back and say oops!". We said we wouldn't pay it. We were then contacted by collections and they threatened us with repossession over $137. I was scared so I told them to post date a check for $160 for April 25, they agreed.
A few days later, I called their repo department and was laughed at by the person I talked to. She said, "no way will we repo for under $500, we will write it off". This made me mad. So on April 24, I called Fifth Third and cancelled the check and they said okay, we will record that. I said we weren't paying 4 months after the fact. 2 weeks ago, we received a paid in full letter and our title! But this isn't the end. 3 days after we received these items, we were contacted by a collections department telling us they would repo for $137 or pay and get the title. We told them we have the signed off title and payoff letter. They told us it was fake. We laughed and hung up.
They continue to call and harass. We have an attorney involved and now Fifth Third, instead of using a second party collector, called yesterday demanding we call. I was invited by Fifth Third Bank to meet with someone to discuss a loan modification. I met with a lady named Kim from the Cincinnati office to discuss the loan modification program for my mortgage. Kim was very rude, from the minute I sat down with her to discuss my mortgage. Kim informed me that I do not qualify for the program because I already have had a modification. I then asked Kim about the Making Home Affordable Program and she stated that the plan is only for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans. I told her I know that the refinance is for those loans, but the modification part is for any bank loans as long as the bank is participating.
She told me she has 19 years of experience and that the programs are only for the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans. I then asked Kim why Fifth Third was not participating and on three different occasions, she picked up a stack of applications and replied "Do you see these? They are all Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac applications. You do not have one of these loans, so you do not qualify." I left the bank, go to the website makinghomeaffordable.gov. Then click on about, then click on frequently asked questions. Question #18 is "Can the Making Home Affordable Program help me if my loan is not owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac?" Yes. The Program helps homeowners who are struggling to keep their loans current, or who are already behind on their mortgage payments. By providing mortgage loan services with financial incentives to modify existing first lien mortgages, the Treasury hopes to help homeowners avoid foreclosure, regardless of who owns or guarantees the mortgage. Then, I called Kim at the bank to explain what I had already knew, since she has 19 years of experience and she told me we are not doing a modification for you.
At this point, I do not even care about the modification. I am now upset that the Fifth Third Bank website and news media is falsely advertising that Fifth Third is doing these modifications, when in fact, they are only doing the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac refinances and modifications. Fifth Third is using its own program called "You Have Options" for their own bank loans and my modification consisted of lowering my interest from 7% to 4% for 1 year, then 5.5% for 1 year, then back to the original interest rate. I am grateful that I received any help. However, Fifth Third is not using the government part of the modification for their loans.
Before I met with Kim, I was told by Max to sign in on a log sheet that was lying on the desk. The log sheet had two other names above mine, their phone numbers, and their appointment times. The log sheet was being used for just customers that had received a personal UPS delivered letter regarding mortgages. I find it embarrassing that everyone in the bank that day could see each others personal information and this would be violating Fifth Third's privacy policy.

I am looking for anyone who would want to pursue a class action suit against Fifth Third Bank and all of their ridiculous overdraft fees! First off, I have $59.00 in the bank. Then out of the blue, they charge a daily overdraft fee of $24.00; then they charge one $37 overdraft fee (totaling $61.00). Then they turned around and charged me $144.00 in overdraft fees the next day, when it was them who overdrew my account! But what really really gets me is that if you have direct deposit on your account and that deposit comes through on early Friday morning (Keep in mind it's direct deposit.), the deposit will not post until Monday morning sometime. So then you will acquire overdraft fees over the weekend.
Now let's say on Saturday you go spend $2 here, $3 there, and so on. Early Monday morning, before the banks open up, you take out $150.00 from the ATM (and it lets you take it out), but now your account is like, let's say, $20 overdrawn. On Monday night, when all this crap posts to the account, it shows the $150 ATM withdrawal up at the top of the list, and all my little $2, $3, $10 charges under it. Now I know what I spent and where, and I am OK with the every now and again charge of $37.00 that should come out because I am human. I do make mistakes!
But I am not OK with them paying that $150 before all the little charges come through and adding a $37 charge on each $2, $3, $10, or whatever the case may be. In the last month or so, I have given them over $1000.00 out of my checking account. Well, I have not given it to them; they just took it! Then when I call to talk to them, they just say that they pay the big items first then they pay the small ones. And my statement proves it. So since when does time stamps not matter? Since when does it matter that I spend $10 on Saturday but on Sunday I spend $50, and the $50 gets paid before the $10? That does not make sense to me!

This bank has allowed charges, numerous overdraft fee, and daily charges to pile up on my account. I deposited money to my account then wrote a check, something happened in between and Fifth Third allowed the check to go through my account before the deposit charging my account overdraft fees and told me they did this because my account was overdrawn by 0.08 cents. Then this company allowed sending the same check through over 8-10 times and Fifth Third Bank charged my account overdraft charges each time. Then they started charging daily charges. I contacted this bank numerous times trying to get this resolved and never did. I feel it is ridiculous for someone to be treated this way. Now I cannot open any bank account because Fifth Third has damaged my credibility putting me on check systems. I cannot tell you how embarrassing this is. This has hurt me economically because I need to pay bills, get direct deposit from my job and cannot do this because of this bank.

I started my account on a Friday, May 30th, online. It was funded by payroll check on Saturday the 8th of 2010. I deposited $325.54. I was not notified that the money from the deposit would be held for two business days. I made transactions with my debit card over the weekend and experienced overdraft charges of $50. When there was clearly enough money in the bank to cover the transactions, I called the bank and spoke with Becky. She said that that was normal procedure and that she would refund $25, $25 was refunded. She informed me that I had three days to bring the balance up to the black. I did that within that time period. The same thing happened again the very next day. What they like to do is take all the withdrawals out of your account first then proceed to add the deposits for the same day. I called again but a very rude teller told me that every bank will do the dame thing. She told me she would have Becky call me back but Becky has not yet called. I called again and was put on hold. Becky was very nice and told me that when money was put on hold, they charge the overdraft fee even if it does not post until the next day. I have my statements available as proof.

I got hammered with overdraft fees in excess of $270 for a $12.60 oversight. They basically gave me a $12.60 loan and charged me $270 in interest over a 2-month period (over 1000% interest). I actually had a free business checking account that I had for years for my business that had to do with the construction industry, which tanked along with my business.
I didn't pay much attention to the account because I was busy in figuring out how to keep my home afloat. They charged me repeatedly over two months then closed my account. I know banks frown on being robbed but they just did it to me. I would have rather them send knuckles to break my thumb, instead of charging me over 1000% interest.
This kind of thing is out of hand especially in these hard economic times.

Can someone explain to me that why do 5th 3rd Bank hold onto payments for a few days before they cash it and put a credit onto your loan? I have tested the way I have sent my payments in to them and it is all different. First, if I snail mail a payment to them, it takes 7 days or more before they cash it. This means collecting on interest! Second, if I did an electronic payment from my bank to their bank, it takes them 7 days to get it even though my bank says it only should take 3 days for them to receive it. Again, this sounds to me that 5th 3rd Bank is collecting on interest. Lastly, I send my payments in as certified mail. It gets there in 2 days, not 7 plus days. Therefore, they cannot claim that it is the postal service fault for delivering so late if I did it as snail mail.
But then Paul, who is supposed to be some sort of executive to the president of the bank, stated that certified mails are handled differently from regular mail, meaning the United States Postal Office seems to put a priority on sending certified mail first vs. snail mail with a regular postage of $.44. So, is he telling me that the United States Postal Office gets to choose when they want to send out the mails? Anyway, I then contacted the United States Postal office to get answers. They laughed and said nope. The time frame for certified mail and regular $.44 cents are mailed at the same time. There’s no difference at all. Who is lying now?
I have 2 years of proof of this crap that has been happening to me. I have been certifying all my payments on a monthly basis. Meaning, I spend about $3.44 a month just to make sure that my payment is on time without being late. For example, if my due date is on the 10th of every month, I need to send it on the 6th or 7th before the due date. This must be done on certified mail or else it will be late because according to 5th 3rd bank, it can take 7 days or so to process and post payments. Is that my fault then or what? Do they just let payments sit in a stack of piles because their work is too back up? Anyone out there, if you experience this, please let me know. Should I pursue a class action lawsuit then or what?

The card should be declined because there is not enough money to cover it, but they approved it anyway just to get the overdraft fees. This is stealing from the customer and dishonest banking practice.
When I called to correct the situation, they just said over and over that the fees would not be reversed because there was no banking error on their part. I told them that I would pay one overdraft fee because I did overdraw on one purchase, but they still would not reverse the fees. In 2005, my husband and I refinanced our building with Fifth Third. We were told that it was a 20-year mortgage. Last year, the bank contacted us and told us that the mortgage needed to be refinanced. We did not know that it was a 20-year amortization loan with a five-year balloon. They went ahead and did a refinance for one year. They said with the business being up for sale, that was the longest they could do and that we needed to have it off the market for six months and then they would do another refinance.
When they did the refinance in 2009, we told them that the building and business was two separates. The building was personal and that we would not put up anything that did with the business up for collateral. The loan officer assured us that there was nothing in the refi for the business assets. When we went to refi this year, they said that there was not enough assets to do the refi and that we needed to come up with more money. I told them I would not put up any equipment for the loan and she said that all the equipment, inventory and cash was up for collateral already.
I told them we did not put it up but the officer put it in the paper work and we already signed it. The building and equipment is worth at least $200,000 and the bank says there is no assets there for a $135,000 loan refi. They are trying to steal our business. If we cannot refi our business with what is already there for assets, we will lose our home and everything. This is our only source of income.

I called her and she said she would look into it and call me back. When she called me back, she told me her name was not Hoang **, told me a different name and told me she did not work for Fifth Third. I looked at the caller ID on my phone and it clearly stated Fifth Third. Later I called for a customer service supervisor and explained that Fifth Third received the check on February 26, 2010, and as of March 8, 2010, it still had not posted to my account.
On March 10 or 11, the supervisor, Michelle, called me back to say that the check was lost and couldn't be found. I needed to have the check re-issued. On March 16, 2010, Fifth Third signed for another UPS package at 9:21AM by a person by the last name of **. I called Michelle to let her know that the second check was in her building. March 20, 2010, I started getting harassing collection calls again. I was getting phone calls at home and hang-up phone calls at work. I immediately contacted Fifth Third and told them to stop the calls, Fifth Third has the check and they need to find it.
On March 25, 2019, I found out that Fifth Third cashed the check on March 17, 2010, but it still has not posted it to my account and I am again getting collection phone calls. I had a copy of the cancelled check faxed to Stephan, employee no. **. He called me a couple of minutes later to inform me that it could take up to three business days to track down. I informed him that I have worked in the accounting field for umpteen years and I am able to track down checks in an hour. I have also sent Howard ** of WKRC an email regarding this situation.
At the end of my email, I realized what may be the problem with Fifth Third Bank. Their name is a fraction and is not a whole number. Therefore, they only do a fraction of the work. I have never had so many problems trying to payoff a credit card. As of today, March 25, 2010, even though Fifth Third Bank has cashed the check and has the money in their bank, it still has not posted to my bank and the issue still remains unresolved. I have missed two days of work trying to get this straightened out without any success.
In a couple of days, the account will be 30 days past due. At this point I do not want to give them any more money because it could take years to get a refund. Besides, if I were to make a payment to shut them up, they would have more money than what is owed on the account. I will never ever use Fifth Third Bank again, even if they change their name to a whole number.

Then, I wrote a check for cobra ($55.22) insurance as I am laid off. I forgot to transfer funds to cover the check. I noticed the account was overdrawn, so I transferred $200.00 to cover check and fees. My unemployment check was also deposited ($260.00). They got me for close to $400.00. I had $100.00 left. I check my balance everyday. All of a sudden in one day, they said I overdrew. I had taken an early because I knew my account would be close to the balance. To make a long story short, they charge overdraft fees on top of overdraft fees. They also charge per day you are over. If you ask to close the account, they told me "wait for 20 days, it can remain overdrawn for 20 days then we will discuss with you the overdraft and how to resolve, but meanwhile we are charging you for each day."
I asked the person if they thought I was stupid or what. Why can't I just work something out with you now, and they told me that they have to let it go for 20 days, of which those days are charging me per day. After the 20 days they will discuss the total with me. The bottom line is that they told me that I was overdrawn $2.74 and they charged me $37 for that. I still have records that I did not overdraw the account, but they told me I have no recourse, it is their word and there is nothing you can do about it.
Also I had savings account that held overdraft protection for my checking, and how convenient they took it upon themselves to close my savings account 3 days before all of this. Then I put in for a stop payment online at 10pm and called then next day to make sure it was entered correct. They said yes it was and they charged me $33 for that, and "oh, by the way the check came in at the same time last night and we paid it." So I called the person that it was to and they said to come in and they would reimburse me since the check cleared. Then two days later, I looked online and they did stop payment on the check they just told me cleared and I already went and got reimbursed for that. Now how does that make me look to that business? While reviewing my account on-line, a couple of small transactions ($5/$10) were posted as pending (money was in the bank to clear these postings). I made a deposit before the end of the day. I also wrote a check the same day as the deposit was made. Although the check was wrote and delivered the day of the deposit, the check was processed through electronic posting for the same day as the deposit.
My account was $40, shy to cover the electronic posting for the check. I understand the overdraft on this process and I do not care to pay the charges for it. However, Fifth Third did not clear the small transactions that were already showing as pending. Instead, they attempted to clear the $150.00 check first, therefore, creating my small transactions, which were already posted as pending, to be denied with insufficient funds. I was charged $125 for overdraft fees on all transactions instead of clearing the small transactions first, (which had money to clear). I was charged $125 in fees for a $40 overdraft.

I got my direct deposit on 1/29/10 and paid bills as normal. I checked my balance on Saturday after trying to make a purchase at Target only to find out that I needed to add more money. So I transferred over 45$ from my savings. Today, 2/1/10, I called the 800 number to find out why I didn’t have anything in my checking or savings and in fact my account is going to be in the negative over $100. I come to find out a check that I had deposited via ATM on 1/25/10 was posted and returned NSF on last night.
What I don’t understand is why the check was returned on today when I got paid on Friday. So they waited until I was down to my last dime to return a check, which is a $15 charge and then I have two other items for which there is no money in the account for because of this check deposit over a week ago. This bank is corrupt and fee driven. I will be making sure that both my checking and savings accounts are closed this coming Friday because I will not be a cash cow for this bank any more. Also, there is a class action lawsuit happening in NC (it was in the Cincinnati Enquirer today). I hope that they get what is coming to them! I don’t have money to give the bank every time I get paid. They are supposed to be protecting you money and helping it grow; instead, Fifth Third Bank has found a way to steal from you!

On the same day, I also paid a bill using my debit card in the amount of $108.87 which did not post until 01/16/10. I was charged an overdraft fee of $37.00 on 01/19/10, even though my ending balance for 01/15/10 was $265.86. I was never notified that the overdraft had occurred (even though I show no actual overdraft).
On 01/22/10, I checked my balance online through Fifth Thirds website, 53.com, only to find that the overdraft fee assessed on 01/19/10 consequently caused 3 other debits to overdraft on 01/20/10, each accruing a $37.00 fee which was charged $111.00 in total on 01/21/10. Beginning Monday, January 25, my account will be charged an $8.00 daily overdraft fee until my account becomes a $0.00 balance or above. Thanks 5/3 for kicking the consumer while they are down. Unfortunately, my wife and I had to file for bankruptcy last July and in April our lawyer told us that if we wanted to keep our Windstar that we would have to call Fifth Third and do a loss mediation. So I called the branch that the auto loan was through and told them what was going on and what we wanted to do. They connected me to a lady named Kim and through her I thought that everything was taken care of. She told us our payment was lowered from $299.97 to $174.97. The reaffirmed amount was $3,630.05 at 8.8% and it would be paid off on May 9, 2010.
Now after making all of our payments on time we get a call that our loan is in default. On April 9, 2009 we sent a payment of $415.29 to have everything caught up. Towards the middle of December 09 we received a form from the Financial Assistance Program at Fifth Third. It was sent back 12/31/09 and we are told that it is still in review. I have called Kristen F.’s office and left numerous messages to have her call me back. All we get is the collections department calling us at all hours. I sent them everything they asked for. We cannot afford a higher payment. That is why we called in April. The account should not be delinquent. Our payments have never been late.

I had a business checking account with this bank for 19 years and when it was necessary to close my account because I moved to Southern Ohio and the nearest Fifth Third is 40-45 miles, away they charged me $50 to close the account, $17.00 unbilled services and $17.00 for service charges for the month.
I talked to the manager six weeks ago and he promised to check into it but did nothing and never returned my call. I talked to a flip teller today who kept apologizing but found her insincere and unwilling to help. Do not recommend Fifth Third to anyone! I am out $67.00 of fees for no reason and no one told me about these fees when I was closing the account.

I wrote a check for $1,000 which was post-dated for December 24, 2009 (Payday) with the verbal consent of the person I was dealing with. The law firm to which it was written was supposed to hold it for deposit until 12/24/09, but the person I was dealing with was ill and the secretary picked it up and included it in the daily deposit. Their bank missed the date and sent it through. My bank paid in on December 21, 2009, which overdrew my checking account. I contacted the firm, which overnighted me a check for $1,000, which did not make it here for 2 days due to a snow storm. I made a deposit for $2200+ on December 24, but by that time, my bank had charged us $510 in overdraft fees, which they refused to refund, saying it was not their fault because their electronic banking did not pick up the date. I suspect this refusal is related to the fact that I complained to the Federal Reserve about exorbitant overdraft charges in the past, which should have nothing to do with this particular case.

On 12/7/09, 5/3 stated they paid a check for $570 which overdrew my account charging me $330 in fees. But the next day, they rescinded payment of the check after they assessed 10 $33 fees for small debt card transaction. The account did not have enough funds on 12/7/09 to clear the $570 check; thus, had they returned the check NSF, all of my debt card transaction would have cleared and left me with a positive balance of $212. This is fraud. Either they pay the check and I am legitimately overdrawn, or they return the check and collect one fee. This is a scam that is evident and has resulted in $600 in assessed fees from the bank. Also, the bank is charging fees for $1 pre-authorization which are never charged by the merchant, holding deposits from unemployment checks, and delaying debt card credits to the account even when the merchant returned the amount to the debt card within 5 minutes of debiting it!
The bank also does not give an account of how they derive the fees and refused to close my account on 12/14/09 so that I didn't continue to incur a daily $8 overdraft charge. They are the worst and are flagrant in their total disregard for the law. I have not filed a small claims civil action against them to recover the fees. If you plan on doing such, send the complaint to 5/3, Complaint Dept., 38 Fountain Square Plaza, Cincinnati, Ohio 45274, 513-579-5300. Maybe if we all start suing them in small claims court, someone will take notice and stop their blatant theft from hardworking Americans!

On 12/7, I had used my Fifth Third checking account to go to a doctor's appointment and do some Christmas shopping for my daughter. When I returned home early that evening, I realized I would need more money in my checking account to ensure all of my expenditures were covered and therefore made a transfer from my savings into my checking that same day. The transfer was done online, and applied immediately to my available balance. I retired for the evening assuming all was well.
The next morning, on the 8th, the money that I transferred over from my savings was still listed as a pending transaction while the expenditures I had made on the 7th were now applied to the account. This left my ledger balance in the negatives. The items were arranged in order to maximize the amount of overdrafts incurred. By the 9th, there were over 500 dollars in overdraft fees resulting from several minor purchases.
What gets me is that I had transferred money over from my savings to cover this. I had made absolutely sure that my expenditures would be completely covered. Fifth Third Bank did not apply my transfer until the 8th, even though it was made on the the 7th, the same day as my purchases. Fifth Third withheld my legitimate transfer in order to ensure that I incurred overdraft fees.
When I complained, I was told that online transfers only apply to the following day when they are completed before 7 pm. First off, I thought this was 24-hour banking. There is absolutely no reason for that policy except to maximize profit at the consumer's expense. It's simply unfair to the customer. I was never made aware of this, and since I was left with the implication that this was 24-hour banking, I never even thought it would be a problem.
Anyone I spoke to at the bank was completely unsympathetic to my situation. There is no way I can pay for $500 (and rising) overdraft fees. I just can't afford it. It's Christmas time and with the current economy, things are bad enough.
It's common knowledge that Fifth Third arranges your transactions from largest expenditure to smallest to ensure that they can apply as many overdraft fees as possible. I knew this, so I do whatever I can to avoid overdrafting my account. Yet I had no idea there was a cut off point for the application of online transfers? 24-hour banking? There is no honest reason to have such a cut off time. It's not like I'm interrupting some employee's dinner, or a service rep has to get out of bed to complete my transfer, it's all online and automated.
If Fifth Third had just applied the transfer instead of purposely withholding it, I could have avoided $500+ of overdraft fees. It's dishonest and completely unfair. Now I am in some serious financial trouble just in time for the holiday. Seriously, its' not like I spent more money than I had. I transferred money from savings to checking on the same day I made purchases.
I hope there is a class action lawsuit against these thieves one day. The way they treat their customers is atrocious and I am starting to believe some serious federal regulations are required to protect consumers from horrible policies that serve no purpose but maximize Fifth Third's profits at my expense.

If my card had been declined, that would have solved the problem immediately. Instead, you can only make debit card purchases as credit or you will get charged fees at the end of the month. A charge does not go through immediately as a debit purchase does, so you can keep on charging.
I went to the bank to see if I could get some fees reversed, as I have been a customer for 6 years. They had to send my request to the branch where I opened my account (for no apparent reason). While I waited the four days it took the other bank to respond, I was charged even more fees. They decided to only reverse $100, like that made much of a difference.
I was forced to apply for early account access to borrow money from my next paycheck. Of course, this cost me another $50 in fees. All of this is happening in the few weeks leading up to Christmas! I hope all of that extra money lining their pockets keeps their greedy hands warm.

After finding out what happened, I called the bank and they said that I was 6 months behind, which only turned out to be a few days behind. This was found out at a local branch in Eaton, Ohio after paying $400.00 to them. I got the car back unharmed. I received a letter in the mail from 5/3 stating that I had an overdraft on my account. It says "your account was charged $198 in overdraft fees today". As I read further, it shows that I began this particular day with $421 in my account. There were 7 transactions that day, 6 of which cleared my account for an amount of $209. The last transaction was for $286. The $286 was returned, but I was charged $33 for every transaction that cleared my account.
When I contacted 5/3 about it, I was told that they would pay the largest check first. This did not happen! The largest check of the day was the $286, which they did not pay. Technically, if I had $421 and they paid $209, I should have $212 left. When the $286 came up for payment, they bounced it. So, I should have had $212.19 minus the overdraft/returned check fee of $37.00 (being generous), which would bring my account to $175. How can 5/3 charge me their $33 overdraft/returned check fee on transactions that cleared my account?

I have had an auto loan with 5/3 since Feb 2005. I called them on 6/10/09 to get the payoff amount (just to make my life easier - I only had 6 more payments to go). I was told the payoff was $3,105.38. I thought this was too high and questioned it. I was told it was due to a difference in daily interest rates and specific dates my monthly payments had been received. I questioned this again at the local branch and was told the same thing. I specifically asked if there were any other fees and was told no. So, I paid it off. On 6/29/09, I had not received any info from 5/3 re: getting the title, so I called to check on status. I was informed by the automated information that the balance on the account was now $40.44, and that my payment of $2955.38 had been received on 6/17/09. But my payment had been $3105.28 - what was the $150.00 difference?
At that time, I was told it was an early payment penalty. I told them that was unacceptable and asked that my payment minus the regular June payment be refunded and I would just continue making the rest of the regular monthly payments. I wasn't paying $150.00 prepayment penalty when I only had 5 payments left. I was told by a supervisor that a refund of $2732.87 would be sent to me within 10 business days. On 7/7/09, my regular July payment was due. I called to question if there would be a problem paying it at the local branch since I had not received my refund yet and 5/3's records still showed I only owed $40.44. I was told it wouldn't be a problem. They'd just apply it as an overpayment and my refund was in process (Of course, there was a problem at the local branch, they said they couldn't apply the regular payment of $372.51, when there was only $40.44 due - but they finally went ahead anyway).
On 7/20/09 (the 10th business day after my original call for a refund), I contacted 5/3 at 800-972-3030 asking about the status. I was told the account was paid off and I'd be getting a refund of $300 something. I was told it was too bad for me about the prepayment penalty. My previous request for a refund had been denied and that was the end of it. "Mary", the supervisor I spoke with, was very argumentative and abrupt with me. I explained that my contract merely said "there may be a prepayment penalty", but I had questioned it and was told no. Maybe can also mean maybe not.

Since 5/3 is trying to sell a majority stake in their processing division to TransFirst. We believe that they will approve all transactions regardless of the risk just to elevate short term processing fees. This gives them more leverage in their negotiations with TransFirst. The problem could be that hundreds of their employees are too stupid to dial the correct number (per 5/3 management) or it could be that they are publishing the wrong number for their conference calls (per 5/3 employees). I have been dealing with this bank since October. Thinking I was going to be receiving my title to my truck I instead got a repossession man. Customer Service has been rude and will not answer any questions stating that they don't have the original contract in front of them to answer my questions and then give me another number to call, and they give me the same answer, although they have some parts of my loan info since they quote me numbers. When I received my history, I called and finally got it put on the disputes review. I talked to a lady there and once again got the runaround of not having the original contract in front of her so she couldn't tell me the reason why my fixed rate had become a variable rate. Instead of doing her job and looking into why I was questioning the loan, which would have been just a matter of getting my original agreement, she instead sends it to collections again, and to be repossessed again...
Isn't customer service supposed to be service for the customers?? How would you all like it if someone treated your mother that way? I would hope you have enough respect for her to care, because you sure have none for anybody else.
Well, I have my original loan agreement. It states that on Dec. 19, 2002 I financed $35386.52 at an APR of 6% fixed rate with finance charge of $6741.28, for total of $42127.80, monthly payments of $638.30, for number of payments 6(e). I am assuming this is six years. And through my conversations with customer service, I have argued that my loan was to be paid off in 66 mo. and they have told me no, it was 72 mo. Yes, that is correct but what happens with the extra $70.04 I make a month which would make the loan paid off in March 2008. And according to my loan history they sent, it has the term at 72 months with an interest of 4.9% and now the interest is 11.9%, the reason being that they state my account has been late since 12/06 after I called in Jan. 07 twice to make sure my account was up to date and I paid $811.73 to do this.
It clearly shows that I would pay the extra amount of money if I was a month late for the late fees t/o my loan history which I really don't believe was necessary since I was already paying extra. So to date, I have paid $43536.86 and Fifth Third wants $3506.43+ to pay off this loan. Can they possibly expect this when it seems to me that they are just changing the loan #'s as they go? If they can't explain things to me by simply getting out the original loan agreement, then I simply cannot bring myself to give them one more dime of my hard-earned money.

My car and renter's insurance bounced. My son's school fees bounced and I can't get the funds in until my husband gets paid on the 3rd of the month. They keep putting checks through and charging me for fees of various names and amounts.

This bank is the worst business to work with. They are completely incompetent and will do anything they can to rip you off. When you deposit a check, they have the right to hold it for up to ten business days. So if you're sending a check out with money, you should have watch out because they love to charge you for bounced check fees. And if you are like me, those fees will put your balance below zero, you will get another $35 fee for that and $6 a day for every day it is not paid. They let people try and cash your bouncing checks an unlimited amount of times. When they finally cleared my check, I still owed them money and I lost two weeks' pay.
Also, about a year and a half ago, I cashed one of my income checks and had it deposited directly to my my credit card account to pay off the balance. Somehow the dumb woman never deposited the check into one of my accounts and my money was lost. When I tried to fix this problem, they asked for my deposit receipt. Unfortunately, I was too naive to keep them at the time. When I asked if they would check the security tapes at the day and time that I was there, they told me that it was impossible and they called me a liar. Not only did I lose my WHOLE check, I also had to repay my credit card balance. Also, since I moved to Philadelphia, 500 miles away from any Fifth Third branch, my problems have escalated.
This great group of people who work at the headquarters seems to always take their good old time depositing checks into your account. It takes an average of two to three weeks for any check I send to get posted to my account. Whenever I call to complain, they tell me I should have just gone to my local branch. When I explain my situation to them, they always respond that it isn't their fault that the process takes so long and to send a check the day I receive the bill. Unfortunately, I get it two weeks prior to the due date so I'm screwed. So I also tried to pay over the phone using my debit card. And get this... The only way to pay over the phone is if you are over 15 days late and you've already been sent to collections.
To top it all off, two weeks before Christmas I received a letter in the mail saying that my credit limit has been cut in half. Now this is a real knee slapper. They tell me this after I did all my Christmas shopping. After the cut, I was $300 over my limit. That day I also found out that I accrued over a hundred dollars in overage fees due to the credit limit reduction. Not only that, they wanted me to pay $400 by the day after Christmas - that was my minimum payment. So in order to pay them, I was forced to make the decision on what gifts I should return and who I could not buy gifts for. When I begged for a month extension, they told me there was nothing they could do and that I shouldn't have spent so much money on my card. BUT I WAS $400 UNDER MY ORIGINAL LIMIT.
The worst part is I can't close any of my accounts with them unless I go into one of their branches. I personally feel sorry for anyone who attempts to do any kind of business with this company. I wish they fall harder than Fannie Mae.

Fifth Third Bank is the largest legalized money racketeering business that I have ever personally dealt with. God forbid if you overdraw your account because they are going to charge you a small fortune in overdraft fees. I had overdrawn my account. On the day that they say I overdrew the account, I had enough money to cover the majority of the checks that came through. But what they did is they went by the highest amount check that came in on that day regardless that it was the last check that posted or not. They withdrew the highest amount first and then continued this from the highest to lowest even though the smallest amount of checks cleared first. If they would have subtracted the checks in the order that they were presented to the bank, then I may have only had one or two at the most overdrawn. But NO, they withdrew the highest amounts first so that they would then put the smaller checks into overdraft and charge my account $37.00 each for 5 overdrawn checks which totaled $185.00. They had the nerve to charge me $37.00 for a $2.50 check.
I called Fifth Third customer service at 800-972-3030 and I could not believe what the agent told me. She said that their practice is to take the highest amount checks out first, then proceed to the lowest amount. This way, they put the smaller checks into overdraft so they can COLLECT more overdraft fees for the smaller checks. These checks would have been covered if they would have subtracted the smaller checks as to the order that they came into the bank.

Although I had the funds in the bank, they charged me overdraft fees, and as I kept putting funds in the bank, they kept charging, and as an end result I ended up with $544 in overdraft fees. Also their policy is to pay the largest item and charge overdraft fees on all the smaller items. Which I have never heard of a bank doing.

The bank charged me $440 for an 18 cent overdraft. There were some purchases pending on my debit card. The banks actions are inconsistent do to a software program that determines how to maximize bank profits. The bank ended giving back $150 but they still owe me over $100.
I believe mistakes like these are common place on the banks part and I am taking them to court.

I don't know if this is legal, but since it takes them many days to send a notice, and keep racking up charges, what would anyone do if they didn't get or read their mail?

I have tried for almost a year to get a title from Fifth Third Bank for the Four-Wheeler that I purchased from them, that has been paid off since 11/06/06. Shortly after I bought this Yamaha, a gentlemen from Fifth Third Bank repeatedly called me wanting the title for it, which of course I never had because it was being purchased through them. The only thing that Fifth Third will send to me now is the Lien Release for the loan on the Yamaha . (So far I have received four of these).
I need the title from this bank in order to get a sticker from the License Bureau. The Bank keeps saying that the License Bureau is where I am supposed to get the title; the License Bureau says that the title has to come from the bank. Since I work and also attend college, this has become time-consuming but necessary issue to resolve.

My 18 year old daught had an overdraft on her Fifth Third Bank card in the amount of $ 2.89. We attempted to cover it plus penalties immediatly but ended up getting charged over $200. We attempted to settle this with the bank, but were tossed back and forth between the branch office and corporate office.

This bank is the worst bank ever. They go out of their way to find opportunities to charge overdraft fees. I currently have three accounts with them, and I have been charged overdraft fees even when both of the following occurred: 1. I had money in my other accounts to cover the expenses and 2. I transferred enough money from one account to the other account to cover the expenses the SAME day the expenses occurred. I have called to complain about this to no avail. The two times I have called about this, I have been given different explanations as to how their policies justify their actions. The last time I called to complain about this, the customer service representative hung up on me.
I am closing my accounts and switching to a new bank ASAP.
$33 for each transaction that occurs. Thus, if 5 transactions occur and a deposit is made THAT SAME DAY to cover all transactions, an overdraft fee of $33*5 will be charged (a total of $165).

Fifth Third Bank charged me an overdraft fee for a pending charge that had not yet actually posted to my account. I had been informed by Fifth Third employees that as long as a deposit was posted to my account before the pending charge posted then my account would be okay. A week ago I used my debit card which created a pending charge. I made a deposit on the next business day and my account looked as though everything would be fine. To my surprise I incurred an overdraft fee of $33 because the pending charge created an overdraft although it had not posted to my account before I made the deposit.
I called customer service and was told there was a policy change in January and that I got notice with my statement. The problem with that is I don't get statements mailed out to me because my account is web based . Then I was told well it should of popped up on the website...it did not. I was told that online it shows your balance including pending transactions.
The problem with that is the balance doesn't include the overdraft fee that you are being charged, so it is not showing your actual balance as they claim. It is conveniantly misleading. The $33 fee that I had know idea that I was being charged then caused three very small dollar items to bounce thus in addtion to the origial unjust fee I now have three more fees for $33 each. Then they charge an additional $6 a day over the limit fee. The fees are snowballing to over $200 dollars which is a rip off of the consumer. There was no proper disclosure of the changes in policy and if a pending charge is going to be treated as if it posted immediately then the fee should be disclosed immediately as well, giving the consumer the chance to eliminate the snowball effect.
If I had known that their policy changed I could have added the additonal $33 dollars but to charge more than $200 dollars to make a customer aware of policy change is unethical. How does the government let these institutions take advantage of it's customers in this way? Are banks regulated by disclosure laws? If so how are they required to notify customers of changes and how far in advance? Most customers live paycheck to paycheck and unwarranted sneaky unethical fee schemes like this should be against the law.
As I stated above the fees have swelled to more than $200 because in their words they were doing me a favor by allowing a charge to go thru on my debit card and I must pay for borrowing money form them even though I made a deposit to cover the amount before it actually posted. There is no way I can afford to pay these fees. Their solution is to refund one $33 fee and one $6 fee for a total of $39 dollars...after creating this snowball effect

I fell into default in my car loan with fifth third bank (45 days) and they repossessed my car on 12/15/06. I contacted the bank, and made my payments current on 12/19/06. Since this point, it has been a nightmare. Originally, the car was taken to Hammond, IN, to be held at the repo lot. After I made the payments current, the car was sent to the Greater Chicago Auto Auction. After numerous phone calls to the bank, I find out the car is now at the Kansas City Auto Auction. Keep in mind that my payments are still up to date. Every time I have contacted their customer service number, I have gotten conflicting information. The bank kept telling me to contact the repo lot, which in turn, told me that the bank directed them to bring the car to the Greater Chicago Auto Auction.
I kept getting told to wait three to five business days to have the release for the car signed and returned by the Greater Chicago Auto Auction. Well, after waiting for almost a month to get my car back, on 1/17/07 (today) I am told that the car is at the Kansas City Auto Auction, and that I have to contact them. I am also told that my next payment is due 1/20/07. After all of this frustration, I told the bank that I am not making this payment to them, because I have gotten the runaround for the past month on the whereabouts of my car.
This has been a total nightmare. I refuse to pay for a service which I am not receiving. I will never do business with this bank again, and I advise anyone that is considering doing so, not to. I feel like my car is being held hostage, even though I am current on the payments. Both the repo lot as well as the Greater Chicago Auto Auction have told me that this isn't the first time that they have seen Fifth Third Bank do this type of thing to someone.
I have been deceived and lied to about where my car is, and despite being current on my payments, I am getting the runaround. I have lost time at work as a result of having to constantly pursue the situation.

I closed my account with Fifth Third, using figures given to me by their customer service rep. The next day, a $2.54 cent charge came in. They charged me a $33 overcharge fee, although the account was supposedly closed the day before. I called the bank and no one there would admit to having closed my account, and they couldn't figure out who did it. I agreed to put the $2.54 in the night deposit that night, and be charged no service fees. I did so, but it never got credited. I started getting letters with ever increasing fees, daily overdraft fees, etc.
No matter how many times I called, or how many letters I wrote, they never had any record of any of it. Finally, I got a letter saying they had closed my account and tuned me over to a collection agency. I recently got a letter from the credit collection agency with a $96 charge!
Being turned over to a credit collection agency will harm my already stressed credit, and make it impossible for me to open an account in another bank. I would like them to remove me from the collection agency and restore my credit.

Within a week our account has had two unauthorized withdrawals from our checking account. The first incident was noticed when I happened to look online at my acct. statement. It showed a withdrawal of $2,000. No check #, no location or name - just a withdrawal. This withdrawal left us without any funds to pay for checks or other payments that needed to be paid. After a day of arguing, pursuing the issue, etc., the bank agreed to put back the $2,000 until they could locate the paper trail to see why $2,000 was taken out. They found out the next day it was due to a teller error who had written a wrong account # down.
All was put back to normal. Until today. Less than a week later I check my online statement again. ANOTHER $2,000 has been withdrawn from our checking account. It was another listing which doesn't show where, when, or whom this withdrawal was requested. After calls to the branch office we were told that they cannot call the service office to request information because they are told not to use the phone, but to email requests. They advised us that they have sent several requests, without a reply. In the meantime, our account is overdrawn again and the bank shows 4 items listed as overdrafts and notices going out today. What can we do to rectify this continuous problem?
Currently the consequence is just time loss - time spent on the issue instead of doing our daily jobs. If the issue isn't resolved immediately, there will be businesses that will have returned checks (with costs associated with that), overdraft notices to pay, and our reputation is at risk.
