I tried to cash a check from my former employer and a month later tried cashing their money order, but both times they (Certegy) said they could not cash it. When I called the number to find out the reason, they simply said that the decision was based on reasons they could not disclose and that it had nothing to do with me. That really makes no sense. It is the stupid system that clearly is flawed. I will find out more about this company. Trust me, I am far from letting it go.

At Academy Sports Albertsons supermarket today, each check I wrote was declined. I have been writing checks at each of these places for years. I talked to 6 different agents for Certegy today, and each time I asked to talk to their supervisor; the last time, I was cut off. There was money in the bank and the Certegy agents said that there were no marks against my account. However, the model used by Certegy to protect the merchants had caused my checks to be declined.
My credit score the last time I checked was in the 800's and there was plenty of money in the bank. This company should be investigated. I intend to file complaints with Academy and Albertsons. I see from other reviews that others have had the same experience. There has been no satisfaction from Certegy.

I've written checks at PetSmart for years. Never have I bounced a check, never. My check was refused at PetSmart. The clerk said to check my bank to which I told her I didn't need to because I knew I had enough funds. She gave me a slip with transaction details. The check processing company, Certegy, denied my check. I called them and after waiting for 32 minutes, finally got an operator. When I asked why my check was denied, he said that even though my account had enough funds, it didn't meet the criteria Certegy has set up to allow the check. I asked what that meant. He said that in order to prevent identity theft, they set up certain red flags that will prevent a check from being accepted - meaning they can deny my check, because say I only write two checks a month or because I live somewhere Certegy has red flagged. Unbelievable! I called Petsmart and filed a complaint. I urge anyone else who's had this problem to complain to the company they tried to write the check to.

On October 8, 2012, all of the banks were closed for a holiday. I went to cash my check at Wal-Mart, which I had never done before. The check is from the State of PA (from a university). It was cleared as being real and legit, but Wal-Mart denied it. The sales associate did not know why and just gave me a number to call Certegy. The person who I called said that they did not want to give out that much money. This Wal-Mart’s cap out is $5,000. My check was only for $2,500. I asked how they false could advertise like that. Everything was cleared, my SSN and the check number. I called Wal-Mart’s customer service and the guy on the phone totally agreed with me. Certegy was not helpful and I could barely understand the lady on the phone. Too bad Wal-Mart is missing out on my $700 purchase because of them.

My family member, in my time of need, wanted to help me out. Because we live far away from each other, she sent me a Wal-Mart Money Gram money order for a rather large amount which I need to help me pay my co-pays for my hospital. I have MS and for some reason I got the money order and the bad news on the same day. I went to my doctor and I am going to have to have chemo, a new treatment for my advanced stage of MS. When I went to Wal-Mart to cash my $900 money order from a family member who plunked down $900 cash to help me out, they would not do it because of Certegy. Stress really exacerbates my disease and I had cussing a hissy fit in front of all the people who were just doing their job. I got on the phone with the Certegy people and no help. I asked where my family member’s money is and they told me I could go to my bank or a check cashing facility. My bank would put a hold on it for 7-10 days or check cashing would charge me a percentage which was almost $100.
This is all besides the point for two law-abiding American citizens to do what is considered a safe and convenient transaction (which by the way I have done before). Be denied for no reason they can or will provide is criminal. Not only was my day **, I spent at least two hours on the phone cussing and they would not budge. This company needs to be investigated for fraud as well. After reading some of the previous complaints, it seems that if you pay a fee to join them. You are a rip-off. I will be checking for their logo and will never use anyone who uses them again. How loud must the wheel squeak to get these people out of business? Hopefully, it will be in my lifetime. I hear chemo sucks. I do want an attorney to contact me.

I went into Walmart to cash my payroll check, which I do every Monday night, and I was denied for reason code 2. I called Certegy and couldn't get a straight answer as to why they denied my check. Walmart said they would 1st have to verify it, which they did. The funds were available; however, they couldn't cash it due to it not bring approved by this company. I've never written a bad check in my life, never cashed a fraudulent check, nor would I ever. But my check was denied cashing because this company decided for whatever reason (I can't get a straight nor clear answer from them) and I had the embarrassment of this for no apparent reason. Total unethical business practices.

I took my part time check to the Walmart Money Center for cashing. I intended to do some shopping. I told the teller that I had never cashed a check here before. I gave her my license and the check. She then asked me to put my social security number in a machine twice. The teller told me that she could not cash my check and she gave me a note with the Certegy number on it. When I called the 866 number, a machine message told me that my check was denied not because of anything negative about me, that it was denied to protect me as well as the company. I then hit zero so I could talk to a live person. This person who said that his name was Vin, repeated the same recorded message.
I was very, very embarrassed because I work Security at the store. I did not want the people there to think something bad about my character. My bank would not give me all the funds I needed for that day. I had to take my employer's check to a currency exchange. They charged me over $16 to cash it. I think Walmart only charged about $4. My fellow coworkers claim that they have no problem cashing the same check. I feel that somehow that company is redlining me, even though they know that the check is good.

I rarely write checks. However, I did not have my debit card on me and needed to get gas so I went to the nearest Publix and wrote a $76-check. It was declined by Certegy. I was furious. I haven't written any bad checks, and when I called the number they gave me, I got a recording that told me I was turned down for my own protection and the merchant's protection. I was told that I did not meet a certain criteria that Certegy has in place for check cashing. She explained that because I did not write many checks, it was red flagged. I called and spoke to two people and they explained that I could apply for their check cashing card, Certegy Prime or something like that and that would ensure that I could cash checks in the future. It is a darn shame that a company that has this many complaints against them is being allowed to control the future of so many upstanding people. This is very very wrong!

My check was declined at Target store because of this Certegy company making a decision on the basis of not writing enough checks. There was plenty of money in my checking account. My wife bought $40k in Moneygrams at Wal-Mart. Now, Wal-Mart will not give us our money back because of a denial by Certegy. How could there be a problem since we paid $40,000 cash to Wal-Mart? All we got was a printed slip giving reason 2 as a reason for denial. When we called the number that was provided, all we got was a recording saying that it is an attempt to prevent fraud without any further explanation. My feeling is that the only one guilty of fraud is Certegy.

I have not written a check in a store in years, but the other day, I did not have my debit card with me and needed to pick up some things from Dollar General Market. My check was declined and I had to use a credit card to complete the transaction. It infuriates me to think how embarrassed I would have been if I did not have another means of payment. Before I even left the store, I called the bank to determine how this could happen. I was assured that I had more than enough to cover the $82.83 purchase. I called the number on the slip the DGM clerk gave me to speak with a rep from Certegy.
After listening to a recording that explained that the decline was not based on any negative check writing history but more of a tool to protect me and the merchant from identity theft, I asked for a live representative. The rep read the same script that I just heard from the recording. She was rude and a real smart **. It seems that since I do not have a check cashing history with Certegy, then it was their decision to decline my check. Certegy cannot make any guarantees that this situation will not occur again, unless I apply for Certegy Prime, and that if approved I would not have any problems in the future. I have no interest in their approval. My credit is good. I have money in the bank. It should not be up to an outside agency to assume that I must be doing something wrong by paying by check.
The Certegy rep explained that they are the check approving agency for hundreds of merchants and that I would not be able to avoid dealing with them in the future. So from now on, I will be fearful when using a check because I don't know if Certegy will decline me again. Where do they get off? I will be checking to see which vendors use Certegy and will avoid them at all cost. I am also going to contact those vendors to let them know why I will no longer shop with them or use their services. It will be an inconvenience but I will not support anyone who deals with Certegy.

My payroll check was declined because Certegy says that the checking account shows a pattern of fraud and they would not deposit it. The consequences were that I had to lose work to drive an extra 20 miles to the bank it was drawn on and go back the distance to Wal-Mart to deposit the money. Upon reading other customer complaints, I think some legal action should be taken about this company and the GE Bank that handles these prepaid cards for Wal-Mart should be informed of Certegy's mishandling of many, many transactions for no apparent reason.

I was at Target where I frequently shop about 2-4 times a week and my personal check was declined because Certegy decided to make a decision to do so. Certegy's explanation was they cannot provide a specific reason. This has caused me not only humiliation in Target but loss of an hour and a half of pay from my employer for being late back from lunch. I also needed to go out of my way and get cash from my bank to go back to Target to purchase these items. I have never bounced a check and verified with my bank at the time that I have 9 times the amount in my checking account to cover the check. More time lost. When I called them, all they could do is explain it's for my protection and I cannot stop them from doing this to me in the future.

Out of the blue, after I changed banks from Citibank to Chase, my check was rejected at Best Buy. I called up Certegy and after persisting found out that although the person on the phone admitted my record from Citibank was very good, they couldn't approve the check. I was angry and showed it over the phone. I did a follow up call to Best Buy and the manager started to claim it was Certegy, not Best Buy and that Best Buy only hires them to watch for potentially bad transactions before they happen. I told him to take more responsibility for who he hires. I've never stepped into that store again. I did a follow up call to Certegy ready to request they transfer the data from Citibank so my long term history would be there. Someone had already transferred the data over. They migrated the data. I went to Walmart to cash my payroll check and was told I was being denied due to "Reason 2" by Certegy. When I called, Kelly, with a distinct Indian accent, told me that it had nothing to do with me or my credit report, but that my check was not allowed due to their procedures. I just got home from the vet where they diagnosed my beloved dog of 13 years with painful bone cancer. I was in shock and realized I would have to euthanize her. They brought her out to the front desk whimpering and barely able to walk from the sedation. I just wanted to comfort her, cry, and take her home. But the whole experience was made more traumatic and emotionally distressful because of Certegy. The vet uses Certegy so when I wrote the check for the final bill, they said it wasn't accepted. I have enough money in my account to cover the check. But they wanted me to call my bank. They stood there watching me as I called my bank.
I even put them on the phone with the bank who told them there was no problem on the bank's end, i.e. I had enough money to cover the check. But based on Certegy's faulty information, they believed them rather than me or my bank. The worst day ever was unnecessarily made so much more painful for me. Not to mention my poor dog who was suffering with a fractured arm and bone cancer. She was on pain meds but she was traumatized and crying. Anyway, the vet made me sign a payment agreement with 1.5% interest. I felt like I shouldn't be penalized with interest for Certegy's reckless mistake. I signed the agreement, just to get out of there, went home, got my debit card and returned to the vet. I paid it off in full with my debit card (same checking account) and it went through fine. I had a feeling if I googled Certegy, I might find a page like this.
I told the people at the vet that they should change their check vendor because no one else in my situation should have to go through something like that especially not after receiving news that you're going to have to put your pet of 13 years to sleep. Remember we need to hold accountable the businesses who use Certegy, especially in light of all the complaints against them. If the businesses care about their customers, then they would stop using Certegy. After all, Certegy won't listen to us because we don't pay them. We're not Certegy's customers but the businesses we frequent are. So start complaining to the businesses and if they don't change their check vendor, then stop shopping there.

After my ATM card was lost, I was dependent on using my check book, which I typically only use about once a month. On a Sunday, I traveled 30 miles to Home Goods to shop. After spending an extended amount of time in the store, I checked out with approximately $250.00 worth of merchandise. The cashier told me that my check was declined and handed me a small paper that included Certegy's 800 # that I could call. I reached an automated message that asked me for the check # and the amount. I was then told that the check was not declined because of any bank account issue, it was declined because of usage pattern. The 'voice' apologized for 'any inconvenience' and reassured me that this would not happen in the future.
Are you ** kidding me? It was a huge inconvenience, embarrassment, and waste of time! ** happens, like your ATM card being lost or stolen, in which case it is reasonable that one would need to rely on alternative means of access to their funds. Apparently, discount shopping is reliant on discount payment verification services. Certegy should be held to verification processes that actually verify a customer’s ability to pay. My guess is that Certegy is a cut rate company offering cut rate services.

I am completely and utterly pissed off that this company has been given the authority whether to accept or decline my check. I have written checks over 25 years - and to have a check in the amount of $19.27 declined! No information was found when I first inquired via the website. That then lead to a phone call to lord only knows what third-world country, only to be given no valid explanation. It is completely unconstitutional and against my rights. After reading many complaints from various websites from consumers with the same frustration, it only makes me scratch my head and ask myself, “How long are we going to let this happen?” I sure hope Certegy enjoys their $19.27 because when I am done with them, it will cost them a lot more than that. I will not just sit back and let this pass by. I am going to start a petition for a class action lawsuit. So if you are interested, stay tuned!

I called Certegy, talked to a "Kelly" and was told she could not discuss the situation with me because the check was a bank check, not mine! She told me to use a debit card or send my personal check to pay the bill! I do not have a debit card and very rarely use checks! Incidentally, the payment was an annual payment for fur storage. Now, I have a check made payable to Macy's that I cannot cash or deposit. I haven't talked to my bank yet, but I suspect there might be a charge to reverse the bank check. While renovating my home, I had the opportunity to experience what a worthless and misguided entity Certegy is. I never knew when I walked into Lowe's whether or not my check would be accepted. Certegy uses demographics and risk analysis to determine whether or not the check will be accepted, and nobody in the store can override what Certegy says. I have had them decline a check, and then an hour later, approve one drawn on the same account for twice as much. My policy in the future, and the message I will be sending to Lowe's is, "I won't do business with people that do business with companies such as Certegy." I have been cashing my payroll checks at Walmart for years. It was always easier to just cash them there rather than wait in line forever at the bank. I work overnight so when I get off of work in the mornings, banks aren't open and I live 30 minutes from a bank. I got my payroll check Friday morning when I got off of work but decided to wait before cashing it because I needed to get home immediately after getting off of work that morning. When I got off of work Saturday morning, I stopped at Walmart to cash it. After walking in and grabbing a cart, I ripped open my check and signed it while walking through the store. I had a few things I needed to pick up while I was there since I avoid shopping at Walmart as much as possible because of their horrible customer service. I even worked at Walmart for a little while before I moved.
I found quite a few things in their clearance section and then proceeded to go to cash my check since it was finally 7:00 am and their Money Service Center was supposed to be open. I stood around for 15 minutes with another guy but no one ever came and the customer service desk had the guy go there to get a money order. I went to the check lane to cash it and check out. I asked the cashier if she needed me to pay in cash or if she could deduct my purchase out of the check since most of the cashiers don't know how to do them together. She said she could take it out of the check. She did everything and I entered my Social Security number. It didn't ask me if I wanted to put it on my Walmart card, which I didn't but it always will ask.
It was supposed to be free to put money on it when you cash a check but that's a load of crap because it deducts the $3 from your card and doesn't appear on your receipt so Walmart won't refund you your $3. Then, the cashier said it was declined and gave me a slip of paper. I was completely shocked and confused. Why would my payroll check from a huge company be declined? I called the number for Certegy on the paper and had a reason code of number 6. An automated system told me that the check had already been accessed. I'm even more confused. Does that mean it had been cashed already? How was it cashed when I just opened it?
I finally spoke with an operator who told me the same thing and said she couldn't provide me with any more information. I'm trying to find out if it had been accessed within the last few minutes to make sure it wasn't accidentally cashed at Walmart or if the cashier hit the wrong button or some mistake. I wanted to make sure I still could get my paycheck and that I wasn't walking out of Walmart leaving them with free money. She told me I could try another check cashing service which I don't know of any that don't charge an arm and a leg. I was freaked out and embarrassed on top of it. I asked to speak with the manager because I wanted to make sure that the check wasn't cashed. They reassured me that it wasn't and said that I could try again at the Money Service Center, which was finally open.
Again, it was declined for the same reason. I called my employer, which was closed and no HR reps were in, and someone gave me a number for corporate HR but it was closed for the weekend. I live paycheck to paycheck and was scared that I was about to be out of a paycheck until they could get it situated. I called Wells Fargo, where the check was written from, and after 5 times of telling the woman in another country how this was my employer's payroll check to me and that I didn't have an account, she finally understood that I didn't write my own check and that the account number wasn't mine. I didn't understand why they couldn't verify if that check had been cashed or not, but she said I could try cashing it in the bank. I wanted to make sure that before I drive an hour out of my way that they could do something about it and she did say they could find out if it had been cashed.
On my way home, I stopped at Publix to give it one last try to cash it. I told the lady the trouble I was having. I was even shaking and having a hard time finding my I.D. because I was so freaked out. It went through! I was so thankful and talking to her about how this company wouldn't tell me anything about my check and she said everything was automated, which I knew that, and that they go through Certegy. I was shocked again! Just barely an hour before that, they said they couldn't cash this check because it had been accessed, embarrassed me and cost me an extra hour of my time. Now, I can cash it for an extra dollar at Publix. This is **! It's obvious that their process is screwed up. I went to their website to email them so I wouldn't have to deal with arguing with their foreign customer service reps but there were only phone numbers.
I want to complain about this because there was obviously no reason for my check to have been denied at that moment. This was just ridiculous and stupid. There needs to be more companies like this rather than just one running in all these stores because they're obviously causing a lot of trouble for a lot of people. If someone can't purchase their groceries by check or debit card in one store, then they probably can't in most of their stores without having to stop and get cash out of the bank. This company is also causing the banks a lot of money which is being put into extra fees on their customers. People have to have cash on hand and heck, they're just going to leave what minimum they need in there for bills and keep cash on them for everything else since they'll have to have it anyway. That's what I do!

On May 9, 2012, my wife and daughter made an 80-mile round trip to Big Lots on Benner Pike, State College, PA to purchase a tent for $126.14. My wife wrote a check on our Federal Credit Union account with a $5,000 balance. She presented two forms of photo ID, her PA driver license and a military dependent’s identification card. The check, unbelievably, was declined by an apparently incompetent company called Certegy who said they had "insufficient information" to approve the check. What does that mean? Our FICO scores are around 780, the FCU account is more than 40 years active and actually has a telephone number, and we have never ever bounced a check or run late with any payment of any kind. We're in the phone book - we're on Google!
I spent 26 years in the military serving my country, including two combat tours (Cuba and Vietnam) and retired in 1989. We are honest and responsible citizens and the decline-check decision today in Big Lots was unwarranted, embarrassing and frankly outrageous. I can't even remember ever having a check declined before. My wife is Asian and was horrified at the public humiliation she received today at Big Lots. The local store management, though commiserating in attitude when I talked to them, claimed to have no discretion whatever. Why? Consumer complaint email to Big Lots corporate was unanswered. Why?

This is the second encounter with Certegy that my family has had in the past two years. The first one happened when we moved from East Texas to Carrollton, TX. We opened new bank accounts when we moved. I took my wife's car in for a check-up at the Volvo dealership and the bill was $400. I wrote a check and was told that it was not acceptable and even a number to call which was Certegy. I was told that the account was too new for them to accept my check. Now, there were ten times the amount in the account but that made no difference. I won't go into details on that fiasco.
This time my wife's check was denied for $14.95. After many calls, we found out that somehow her driver's license number was mistakenly associated with someone else's returned checks. Here's the punch line for all of you. The first person I talked to was in Manila, Philippines. I was told it would take four to five days to clear my wife's problem, so, do not write any checks during this time. One week later, I called to make sure everything was alright and guess what? Oh, we are very sorry, but it will take another four days because the first person did not process the paperwork properly. Now people I have read many of you with the same problems with this company. Then I was asked to call Certegy Check Service where only the machine told me to enter the check amount of $4800 then quickly declined after mentioned, because it fell under their safety criteria. Then, it hung up. Last year, even with larger amounts at the same store, everything was ok. It was very confusing and time-consuming!

I wrote a check at Bellagio Las Vegas for $100. My mistake: I grabbed the wrong check book, which is an account that I rarely use unless I'm traveling for business. As a result, the money wasn't in my account to cover the check. I accept and own that mistake. The check for $100 was put through a second time and cleared my bank account. However, a week later, Certegy (the check processing company Bellagio uses) debited a $25 fee from my checking account, which in turn made the account overdraw. The bank charged me a fee of $35 on top of it. I want my total of $55 back from Certegy. Certegy should notify customers when they will be taking out a fee. Or they should have emailed me, called me, or sent a letter that I owe them a $25 fee for the original returned check. They sucker punched me and just took out the $25 fee, which caused my account to be overdrawn and the bank charged me $35 as a result. Bad business practice. They sideswiped me. I want the $55 back.

My wife and I went to Lowe's to purchase new appliances. When trying to check out, I wrote a check using our home improvement checking account for an amount just over $5,400. I was informed it was declined based on a computer risk based system. I called the toll free Certegy number and spent over 40 minutes on a call with the idiots that had no authority to do anything. I was told to wait another 10-15 minutes and try again, since he had elevated my account to gold status. This is a load of crap! We tried again after 20 minutes and it was declined a second time. At this point, I cancelled my order and Lowe's has forever lost my business for using such a despicable company.
Certegy is costing the companies that use them more money than they claim to save them. The ridiculous part of this was that I was not even leaving the store with any of the product I was purchasing, since they were going to be delivered the following weekend. This would have allowed them plenty of time to clear the check through my bank and insure that the funds were available. Their policies need to be revisited and they should certainly stop using this Certgey Company if they want to stay in business. I will never shop there again after this experience.

I contacted Certegy's assistance line and received a very well spoken, computer generated voice script that advised the check was declined as the proprietary software suggested fraud. Immediate conversations with my bank reflected no negative information against the account or the check in question. I am awaiting any impacts on my credit history or report at this time. I had an issue with this company last year and again this year when trying to cash my student loan checks. I was given the same runaround of an automated system. Then I got a rep who barely spoke English and gave me the automated responses of a system that has a number of factors they review and it had nothing to do with my credit or check history but to prevent fraud. I asked to speak with a supervisor and same issue. It seems like any check over $1000 they don't want to cash and Wal-Mart should not advertise they will cash checks up to $7500 when their company they use won't do it.
Last year, I did get a hold of someone there that increased my limit and put me on some gold status allegedly and I was able to go to a Wal-Mart Money Center and cash one of the checks. This year, I tried again and the check was a bit more and when I told the rep about last year, they said they have no one there that would do that and there was no way they could change it to accept my check and that I should go elsewhere. So this company that represents Wal-Mart is sending their customers elsewhere and when those customers go elsewhere to cash their checks, they're not going to be so keen to come back to Wal-Mart to shop. If there's any pending class action suit against this company, I'd love to be a part of that.

On Monday, March 12th, 2012, I received my federal return in the mail. That evening, I drove back over to Walmart to cash this check. Their system would not accept it. I thought maybe I had entered my SS number incorrectly and asked her to please re-run it. Same problem. She handed me a small slip of paper and circled "reason 2". I walked out to my car and called the number. Just like everyone else on here, I received the same automated response. When the economy tanked back in 2008, I lost my job. I received unemployment checks until I found work again. In that time, while unemployed, I cashed my unemployment checks there without a problem.
I do not trust banks, therefore, I choose not to have an account. This is my right. On March 9, I attempted to cash a check the IRS sent me, drawn off the United States Treasury, at the local Wal-Mart in Hatfield, PA. After giving all my information, including my social security number and driver's license, I was told the check could not be cashed. I was given a piece of paper with a Code 2 on it and a number to call.
I called the number and went through a series of automated prompts that eventually resulted in some excuse that the check matched a pattern of a known fraud. Unhappy with the automated explanation, I spoke with a representative who would not give me any more information other than that they would never authorize the check and I should just go somewhere else. I asked to speak with a supervisor.
After a few minutes, I spoke with a supervisor who would only say that even though there may be nothing wrong with me or the check, they were not going to authorize it to be cashed. She would not elaborate further other than to say their proprietary fraud system very rarely denies legitimate checks. I am still fuming, because it is not a personal check that I am trying to cash. It's not even a check that I wrote. It is a government-issued check! How can they deny such checks?
In the end, I believe they are using me as a statistic to sell their services. Certegy must realize less and less people are writing checks or having them cashed, so they invent these fraud detection models that end being completely wrong. I don't think Certegy should get away with this. They are causing consumers to believe there is fraudulent activity going on while refusing to elaborate as to why. So from spending $3.00 (Wal-Mart) to cash my check, I had to spend $27.50 at another check cashing business.
After reading all the horror story complaints, I truly believe this company needs to be investigated by the US government for unfair practices right now. This company needs to be held accountable for every check that is refused, and give good cause, or reasons for such actions, not the same cover excuse every time, which is a total nonsense in this day and time. I took a check issued by the State of Washington state employees retirement system to Walmart to cash because I did not want to wait to mail in deposit it in my out of state military bank. Certegy declined cashing it. This is a check written by the State of Washington on a bank in WA DC and there is no local branch of theirs or mine to take it to.
I have no issues with writing checks. Two minutes before taking this check to Walmart's customer-no-service counter I had written a personal check at that Walmart for my purchases! That apparently cleared Certegy but a government check will not? Hmm, maybe that's it, it was a government check? Kidding aside this company is a PITA and is doing more harm than good to the businesses who utilize their "service." Whichever corporate W goon decided this was a good idea gets the M*** of the Year for Bad Public Relations award.

This person told me the DMV in Illinois does not have the same info that appears on my DL. Finally, I gave up and accepted the 800 685-1111 number in Atlanta, which was supposedly for Certegy. I wrote 3 checks to Walgreens - same store each time. The third check was declined for no reason. I was given a slip of paper and was told to call the number to get an explanation. It was Certegy and all I was given was a recording - no ability to speak to a live body. I tried calling 3 times and also went online and was given this explanation:
"We understand and apologize for any concern caused by your check not being authorized. Certegy carefully analyzes patterns of check writing activity designed to protect consumers as well as our merchants from fraud, identity theft and unauthorized usage. While the majority of check authorization requests result in approval, there are occasions when a valid check matches these patterns, resulting in a decline. This decline was not a result of any negative check writing information, but as a preventative measure. These situations are rare and should not affect the authorization of your checks in the future. Please be assured, this has been conveyed to the merchant."
I have the funds in my account. I wrote two other checks for more than the check that was declined. I was thoroughly humiliated in front of store personnel and customers in line behind me. It looked like I had insufficient funds in my account, which is not true. There is no need to humiliate me, there is nothing wrong with my account, nothing wrong with my checks or my check writing history.

I purchased a money order in amount of $500. I need the money today; I thought purchasing a money order would be the best way to obtain it. I have a bank that is not local to my current residence and I can’t withdraw large amts. of funds in one day. I need a total of $1000.00 and the ATM will not allow that high of an amount to be taken out in one day. I saw that I could use my ATM/Debit card to purchase a money order at Wal-Mart so I thought I would be able to get the amount I needed.
I was wrong and was duped to fraud by the Wal-Mart and the Certegy Co. These companies took my $500 from my bank account, but will now not give me my money. I was on the phone for hours trying to get help from the numbers given and it is a farce and a joke. I believe the numbers are just there to look official. You cannot obtain any help or information from any of the numbers given. I was told I would have to cash the money order somewhere other than a Certegy merchant because Certegy denied the check/money order. I called many places and they all refused to cash the money order because it was obtained at Wal-Mart.
I do not want to deposit back into my bank account; that is where I got the money from in the first place, but the bank is not even where I am. I can’t wait --nor do I even believe for one minute after seeing how this company deals, that I will even get a refund back within any decent amount of time. I am now in serious trouble without the cash I need. Who in this world would imagine that the money order could not be cashed?
I am warning anyone; do not use Money Gram or Wal-Mart. Don’t take the chance that this could happen to you. I plan to write in full to the Attorney General of CA and the US and the BBB about this. This is a racket to steal your money. This company cannot be reputable. There is no reason for them to deny giving me the money from this money order. The worst part is that I was told it cannot ever be cashed and there is no one in the company to authorize it to be cashed. I have no alternative but to put it back into my back account as a deposit. Oh yes, and it cost me 60 cents, gas to the Wal-Mart, over an hour and half of my cell phone time, and not to mention the grief, and stress and anxiety I am going through tonight.

On October 5 at a TJ Maxx 50 miles from my home, I wrote a check for $330 worth of merchandise with my valid driver's license. I have ten times that much money in my checking account. Certegy rejected my check. I was given a card which has a 1-800 number by the store manager. I called it from the store but all I got was computer messaging, so I was unable to get a resolution. When I got home I got on the Certegy website and filled in my info but again there was no resolution. So I called 1-800 again and I finally talked to customer rep Dana.
Dana was a nice lady but she can't explain why my check was rejected nor what I can do to avoid this in the future. I have a superior credit rating, am employed by a large company, have no history of credit problems or identity theft. Yes, I saw the "gold member" application on their website but decided to skip as it does ask a lot of confidential questions and I still don't know who the heck Certegy is or how they work. If they have 'computer models' that identify 'potentially problem checks' then help the consumer understand their criteria for hassle-free check writing. I am just thankful I was not writing a check for an emergency need (like an airline ticket to get to a dying parent or vital medicine for an asthmatic child). Give the consumer someone to talk to. If the check was for $5000 I can understand the scrutiny, but $330? It is ridiculous as far as I am concerned.

But last week I lost my check card and thinking I might need to use a check for groceries I finally called to get some answers. I was on hold for 20 minutes and when I finally got a live rep, she said she found nothing negative. She wanted my check info but I told her it was a payroll check that was declined so their refusal had to be linked to my DL #. I explained that if the retailer wouldn't cash a payroll check from the largest bank in the country, they likely wouldn't take a personal check from me. She was vague in her responses and said that "each check is handled on an individual basis", whatever that means.
Then the call was "disconnected" when I asked her to assure me that Certegy would not be blocking authorization for my cashed checks. I have not had a bad check in 15 years! With most retailers using electronic check approval (which assures sufficient funds and instantly transfers payment), I don't see where Certegy fits in. I will be contacting HEB corporate. Well, in the mean time, I called Certegy from the store and the representative told me that I did not have any bad check writing habits and that this was in no way related to negative information on my end but to protect me and the store from fraudulent activity. They offered to send me an application to become a gold member and said that this would help prevent this from happening again.
The next day, I called my bank and they had no idea why my check was denied. Well, yesterday, November 29, 2010, I had the same incident occur again at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant. My check was denied for a code 2 and again, Certegy was the reason for this decline. I think that something needs to take place ASAP with the company as this is getting to be ridiculous. I mean, if they have no negative information pertaining to an individual, why can they not approve for the check to be accepted at that point. This is very embarrassing and humiliating and I think someone should do something about this nonsense.

I made a purchase at Macy's in Atlanta. The check was scanned and handed back to me and I was given my merchandise. I thought nothing else about it until I went to a local grocery store in Hixson, TN when my check was declined. I was told to call Certegy. I called them and they said I have a check returned and I told them that was not possible as I keep a large running balance in my account and haven't had a returned check in 30 years.
Certegy told me to call my bank which I did and they told me I had no returned checks and that it must be a glitch in Macy's system. I attempted to call Macy's but it was a Saturday and there was no one there to help me until Monday. On Monday, I began trying to get this straightened out and when I called Macy's and told them the story, they asked for my credit card number. I told them I had no Macy's credit card, so they proceeded to tell me that I had the credit card company and they would have to connect me to someone else.
At that point, I realized that I would have to leave my place of employment and drive back to Macy's. Macy's has no customer service department so I went to one of the stations where you pay for merchandise and went through this story once again. She started to tell me I would have to call someone else and I stopped her and told her that I had gone through that and back for something that was not my fault. I also told her that we were going to get this straightened out before I left.
After she made about five phone calls, we were back at Certegy, who after a considerable length of time, came back to the phone and said somehow the system read my checking account number wrong and that they would run the check back through and remove my name from their list. That was on Monday and it is now Thursday and that check number has not been cleared on my account.
I attempted to call them, but of course they are off for the holiday. I will go to my local grocery store today and talk to the manager to see if they are going to accept my check, and if not, I will have no choice but to hire an attorney to get this straightened out. This is something that should never have happened!

I wrote a check at a business called Big Lots and it was denied. Thinking it was due to an out of state bank, I wrote one on a local bank and again denied. I was able to obtain the merchandise by my daughter paying for my purchase. I went to my car and called the number given. I could not reach a person to speak with. It is a voice call system. I cannot get an answer as to why other than it was for the business protection as well as mine. What does that mean? I do not have perfect credit and I have had checks not clear. However, I have always paid the checks and the fees that are charged for a check not clearing. I have always paid all my debts and never walk away from any charges that I may owe.

This is the second time my check has been declined through these crooks. The customer service representative said that I have a perfect check writing history; just the way the computer chooses. The answer to why my checks are being denied is a scam.
Certegy wants me to sign up a membership application with very personal financial information. Once they receive this application, they will consider to accept my checks or not. They say it is just how the computer system that decides to choose and they have no answer to my question. I asked for a printout of why exactly my check was denied and they tried to double talk me. Basically, they said no.
I will now file a complaint with Target for even using these crooks. It was totally embarrassing when Christmas shopping and write a check because I misplaced my ATM card. The check comes back declined for no reason and I have to start taking things out of my shopping bags and get the total down to the amount of cash I have in my purse. I want to add on to the issue with Certegy. I went to cash my payroll check at WalMart. It was denied. I was given a little printout saying I needed to contact Certegy for verification. They would do some sort of personal information collection that would take about 24 hours to verify. I called and all of my information was verified. They took down information about the check including check number, check amount, routing number and the bank account number on the check. They then took down my full name and driver's license number. After all of that, they put me on hold for about 5 minutes only to come back and say that they can't override the decision to deny the check. Good checks get denied all the time based upon the possibility of it being fraudulent. What ****! They just took down enough information to make a duplicate of the check! They asked for my state ID, driver's license and my ss#, which raised a red flag and I asked the cashier why. She said Certegy, their check guarantor, was now charging for cashing money orders. So why the **** do they not honor a money order. They already have the cash for plus another $1.60 just to get it and then maybe you can get it cashed. Ridiculous!

A check for $65.30 was written at Tom Thumb (Safeway) grocery store where I have had other purchases. I've never written a bad check, and there were more than enough funds in account. The check declined and I was just told Certegy. Safeway said Certegy had 'negative information' and gave me number for a furniture store I haven't purchased at in 20 years. Furniture store couldn't answer and gave me Certegy's number.
I did search on Web and found all of these complaints, no reasons given, other than to build a database from responsible people to create a file on them, force them to 'buy' their 'protection card,' sounds like coercion to me and illegal activity to boot. Checks are historically subject to funds, not 'purchase styles' and since no float exists and funds are deducted immediately via electronic signature, this is an out and out scam. Results are embarrassment, as a long line behind me. I paid with my credit card, but yet my bank account funds weren't enough. I will not call and give these shysters and crooks any more of my personal information for them to build a file. I will also put a 'freeze' on my accounts, a letter with my credit files stating the fraudulent activities of this company, and like others, will not longer do business with people who use Certegy.

I was at Copps grocery store in Sun Prairie, WI, a store I have shopped many times and a store I have written many checks at for my weekly groceries. I have a Roundy’s card, so they have my personal information, bank information and everything else to know who I am. On October 23, 2010, I wrote a check for $104 and Certegy rejected my check in front of my neighbors and friends. I have never been so humiliated in my life. Copps would only tell me I had to call my bank. It was 3:30 PM on a Saturday. Good luck with that.
I do all my grocery shopping with checks and always have. I have never written a bad check. I have excellent credit rating and I have never been late with any bill payments and have been in this community for over 17 years. I have never reported a potential fraud against my accounts and Certegy rejected my check. All anyone could tell me was it was rejected and no good. I could not reach anyone at Certegy on the weekend, so I had to deal with their electronic answering device, which look up the transaction and told me my check was a potential fraud.
Let's see, Copps’ policy is you can write a check with their card, which I had. I have more than sufficient funds in the checking account to cover it and have visited this store for a long time on a regular basis. And now, all the sudden, for no reason, I am a potential fraud!
After the total humiliation and embarrassment in front of my neighbors and friends, I had to drive 12 miles to another store to spend yet another hour selecting my groceries. Woodman’s accepted my check without a problem and I was able to write my check for more than my purchase within their guidelines. I went home with my groceries after 3 hours total between the time shopping at two stores and the travel involved. I did not have the time to waste that day, but Certegy gave me no options.

It immediately came back from this Certegy outfit stating "we apologize for not accepting your check. We value your business and regret the inconvenience. Our decision was based in part on information provided by Certegy Check Services, Inc. ("Certegy"). I was stunned. I have been writing checks for over 40 years and this is the first time some "fly by night" incompetent outfit refused one.
When I asked the clerk at AT&T about it, he said it was a pretty common occurrence when you had to use your driver's license to verify your identity. Then he asked me if I had ever tried to cash a check at Wal-Mart and I said "no". He told me not to try it as this scamming organization would probably pull the same trick. When I called the number to try to find out why my check was refused, I talked to some guy that knew less about if than I did. He put me on hold for about 15 minutes trying to figure out an answer.
When he finally decided he had figured out something to say, he wanted to know if I was still in the store where I tried to cash it. I told him "no, I was at home". He started talking about something about going back to the store and putting in an application for something, at which time I hung up. I gave them a lot of personal information, check #, driver's license #, etc. I only hope this is just a scheme to try to get people to join this outfit and not some illegal "rinky dink" outfit. I don't know what they are trying to do, except scheming ways to get money any way they can. I will never try to cash another check where I am asked for my driver's license for verification. I don't understand how this affects the check but I will continue to write checks without verification so I do not have to deal with these unethical schemers, who by their own advertising, have been conning people out of money for 40 years.

Certegy got a $50 sum from each of my checks of $25. I went to my bank and sat down eyeball-to-eyeball with my banker and discussed the fact that there had been an error on my statement and that I wanted my $75 re-deposited to my account. This was immediately done.
Then, this past Saturday (8/28/10), my check for $45.75 at a local Petsmart was declined. I figured Certegy had a bone to pick with me because I did not allow them to steal $75 of my money in the Circle K situation. Okay, I can deal with this, I'm a big girl. I also contacted Circle K at their main headquarters in Pensacola, Fla. today 8/31/10 (Certegy handles their business). Susan (employee of Circle K) contacted Certegy. The person with Certegy stated that they did not do business with Petsmart. I contacted my local Petsmart and spoke with the store manager, Gary, he confirmed that Certegy did indeed handle this part of their business!
After Susan, with Circle K headquarters conferred with Certegy on my behalf, they stated that after checking my driver's license, and my bank account with Chase Bank, they could find no reason for there to have been a problem. They denied having had one of my checks presented for payment at Petsmart and declined (this was to Susan). They later told me that their computer was down and that was the reason for the declined check. They also told me that the reason my three checks for a total of $75.00 were each run through 2X was because they were declined by my bank due to NSF funds.
I was told today, 8-31-10, by my Banker that that is incorrect, and that I indeed had the funds to cover each of those checks and that none were ever returned to Certegy for NSF. Someone is running a scam. I got my money back, but something stinks and I believe it is Certegy. I have caught them in several lies. It certainly is strange that if my checks for gas had been declined, why were they presented for payment twice on the same day I issued them and indicated this way on my bank statement? I called the Certegy check acceptance company there in the store and after a considerably long time, the person on the line stated that due to fraudulent practices, my check was being denied. Needless to say, I was absolutely devastated at this point. After two days of this, standing in line with other customers around and the associates at Target, I feel that by all means businesses should protect themselves and their customers. However, when their practices hurt and abuse the consumers, there is definitely a problem that should be addressed and resolved. I would definitely not want this to happen to anyone else.

Today a check was declined at Albertson's Grocery for a reason unknown to me. The account on which it was written has never had a balance less than Fifteen hundred dollars and at the time the check was declined contained more Six thousand dollars.
This is the second time it has happened and the first time the cause was a "miss-scan" by the scanning machine. If the machine "miss-scanned" the numbers on the check how did they know to attack my account? On the first occasion my checking account was held hostage for over a week. Certegy said there was nothing they could do about it until the check cleared the bank, even though they agree it not my fault.

I rarely have a problem, but I get rejected as Code 2 every few months and Certegy won't give me any reason that I should be denied, other than to prevent fraud and protect the consumer.
I have not had a checking account in years, I only cash two checks per month, and an occasional expense check every few months. Therefore there is no excessive activity to warrant a fraud alert. Certegy will not give a reason, or way to correct this problem, other than it is not a negative result of my check writing. So why then, am I unable to cash the check??

Today 6/23/2010 I was shopping at Kohls in Lakewood, Ca. I was attempting to write a check for $64.74. I wrote the check, produced my ID. The check was refused. I had them run it through and it was refused again. The store manager finally came over and told me that my signature crossed over into the magnetic stripe of the check at the bottom.
So I wrote yet another check. That wasn't it either. There was a phone number printed from the cash register from Kohls and it said if there's a problem please call the number. The manager and I both called the number but it had been disconnected. They said there was nothing that they could do. They called another number they had on file. Even Kohls didn't know it was Certegy. We finally got through. Total time now in line was 20 minutes and there was a long line behind me.
After waiting for what we now find out is Certegy, we get through. I gave the woman all of my info. She said please wait three minutes. More people lining up at the counter now. Certegy comes back on the line that I "fit the profile of identity theft". I said what did the profile say...she said she couldn't tell me, but I could sign up for some stupid gold verification program which should clear this up in the future. But they wouldn't guarantee it 100%. I have never written a bad check and I would really like to know what I fit the profile is, but Certegy will not tell me.
I have no file with Certegy for any checks I have ever written anywhere! Somebody needs to legally address this problem. I am also never shopping at Kohls ever! I would love to have an attorney contact me about going after Certegy.

I too was denied, but unlike a lot of you, I never got a code. No 1, 2, or 3. I had already used a check at Bloom that day, so I knew that some system would take my check and had no worries.
I was with my daughter and mother-in-law. They denied me. I called my bank, freaking. My bank said they never received the transaction and gave me the check system number, and they told me and the cashier that they also never received the transaction. So I asked them to run the check again. Again, it was denied with no code, explanation, or anything.
The store manager called, and they told her there is nothing wrong with my account and that they just don't want to accept the check?! I used my ATM debit card, and it went straight through. The system wants me to go through the Gold thing too, but I am refusing. I will never go to DSW again and the other companies that you all have mentioned until they change their system. My experience of Sunday, April 11, 2010, was much the same as the many other complaints regarding Certegy that I have read on your website. My personal check for $227.59 was declined at my local Walgreen's, where I shop regularly and have previously written checks. I received a slip of paper from Walgreen's with a 1-800- for Certegy in Tampa, FL. I called this number; it was an automated response but I figured out how to stay on the line to talk to a real person and was able to talk to Latisia.
I was told the same line as many of the complainants on this website - not declined because of negative check account activity, but because my check somehow fell on the edge of a possible suspicious activity. Again, my checking account had sufficient funds to pay for these purchases. I got nowhere with Latisia. I called the 727- number today, April 12, 2010. I talked to Stacy. She could give me no real explanation for denial of my check, except to tell me that it showed a "lost with" explanation. I asked her to explain what that meant, and she said that because of possible negative activity at the store that day, my check was declined. I said, so because someone else possibly tried to pass a bad check, mine is declined. She stated that that might not be the exact reason.
Then I insisted that I talk with a supervisor; I got Katina. Then she tells me that there are proprietary guidelines that they follow, from a computer model, that my check was a worthless piece of paper, unlike a debit or credit card which assured Certegy that they would be paid and my check could not assure them of that (I failed to ask her what they would do if the debit or credit card did not go through). When pressed about the proprietary guidelines, she said no one knows what those are. I told her at some point someone had to know as they had to be inputted into a computer at some point. She also told me that my check could have been declined because of the time of day, the number on the check (I have had this account for years), the amount of the check, or other check activity in Walgreen's that day. We got nowhere.
She said more than once did I need anything else, at which point I said I guess you don't want to talk with me anymore today. She assured me that was not the case, and that I had many positive check approvals in my file from Certegy. I told her that I understood that would be correct as I had not ever had a check denied before. She also suggested that I apply for Certegy Gold, which after reading that application, I told her that if their goal was to protect consumers by filling out that application they have more information than I feel they would need (do they really need to know if I own/rent my home, how long I have lived there, my household income and other information).
I have filed a complaint with the branch of the Better Business Bureau in Florida regarding this company, and have also sent a letter to Walgreen's regarding this "service" they have contracted with. It seems disreputable to me, at the very least.

I demanded to know if there was anything negative on my record with Certegy. According to them, I do not have any negative activity with their company. But because of fraudulent activity, they could not approve my check. Of course, my check denial was embarrassing to say the least. The application asks for personal information like checking account information, social security number, driver's license, and job history. Why should I have to give out that information when I do not have a negative history with Certegy and my checking account is in good standing? We have been married 30 years and have very high credit, have our own business, and we have very established checking accounts.
That night we were using our company check to pay for our groceries. And we were declined from being able to use our company check. We were made to feel like criminals and were told we would have to use another way to pay. We had cash on us, we even had a debit card (and both would have worked). However, it was the very principal of it all. This company does this type of thing to many very good customers around the country and it is not right at all. Certegy would not tell the merchant why the check was declined, but when I called their 800 number (800-770-3792), I was told the check was declined because there was a returned check in our history.
We could avoid such situations in the future by becoming Gold Members of Certegy. Having read all the other complaints that have preceded mine, many of them are far more egregious. Suspicion is certainly raised that what is happening here is that Certegy is trying to sell "Gold memberships" and someone is trying to encourage the use of debit cards. I was doing a purchase at 2 different stores, and I was declined for both transactions. They would not give me a valid reason why. My name did not match any info in their data bank at all. They said my purchase met a certain profile and was declined. They said that I had done nothing wrong. It was my transaction dollar amount and the info on my check, but they would not tell me what info. They actually said that there's no criteria at all. With the market bad, they decline a lot of checks, just to decline them because they don't want to take the risk and have to pay them back. They said they would continue to decline all of my checks even though I have no bounced checks, it's not my information, and they feel it's their right to decline as many checks as possible. And they actually said if I would sign up for their Gold membership, this would not happen anymore. This seems like extortion to me.

I was told that my check would not be accepted. I was told to call Certegy. I called the company the very next day. I was told I had no outstanding checks that needed to be paid. I just fit the statistics of someone who did. I was told this situation would not be a problem ever again. I advised them I will be making a complaint.

I called Certegy to see why my check was declined and could not reach a human being; I was repeatedly looped through a recording until the call was terminated by Certegy. I am quite frustrated by this, as I have never written a bad check and do not have bad credit. The message on the recording said, "Please note we have no negative information on file regarding you as a consumer and that has been conveyed to the retailer." I find that odd as there is no information relayed to the retailer; they must terminate their transaction to move onto the next person. I am very frustrated by the fact I have not been able to reach a person and have no way to resolve this issue.

Thank God the teller knew us and let us bring payment back later! I called Certegy, only to get to sit on hold for 1/2 hour, never getting a customer service rep. The automated info stated that no bad check history was on file, but our check did not meet the criteria for their model examples! This is one big conspiracy to get people off using checks and we can all be bar codes! What a crock of **. This company should be investigated and/or put out of business themselves.

Our check after several minutes was declined for a code 2. We ended up paying with my wife's business credit card issued to her by the State of Missouri as a state employee.
I attempted to contact Certegy via 800-237-4851. I attempted to follow their instructions regarding entering what I consider very personal information including my Missouri driver's license number and checking account information. I was never able to complete that task on the phone after several attempts. I was always told by the recording to go to their website "askcertegy.com." I googled Certegy and saw several different links. Many of which were dedicated to complaints against the company. I read some of them, and it seems as though they were similar to my issue. When I went to askcertegy.com and put in the information requested, this is all I received:Disclosure
We understand and apologize for any concern caused by your check not being authorized. Certegy carefully analyzes patterns of check writing activity designed to protect consumers as well as our merchants from fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized usage. While the majority of check authorization requests result in approval, there are occasions when a valid check matches these patterns, resulting in a decline. This decline was not a result of any negative check writing information, but as a preventative measure. These situations are rare and should not affect the authorization of your checks in the future. Please be assured, this has been conveyed to the merchant.

It seems like Certegy is intent on attacking me. I wrote a check at a now out of business store around 2 years past (Big Lots) and when my information reached Certegy, it was stolen and sold. I received a letter from them, and later did not join the class action suit against them but I wish I had. Now, I go to Cracker Barrel where we are regular customers, and I am humiliated because they refuse my check with a code 2, which is really no reason, but that they must be making a quota for their Gold member status. It is a weekend and I cannot talk to a live person to tell them what I think of their treatment. First they steal from me, then humiliate me, and this past summer I have had to deal with an attempted ID theft that could probably be traced back to them. I have just finished the process of changing my check account and all my bills and now here we go again.
I need an attorney for a lawsuit but we are retired and need our energy for our health problems. I find that my pharmacy uses Certegy, and have just contacted them and other businesses that we frequent to let them know they have lost us as customers. Because I have a background in publicity, I hope to give Certegy lots of it. I still have the letter telling me that an employee stole information from more than 30 thousand customers. I will be showing it to all my friends who frequent these businesses and sending out emails to all my family and friends to let them know, as well as contacting all the newspapers where I was a writer. On Sept. 25, I was at a local gas station in Dallas City. I called Circle K. I have done business with them through 3 name changes and over 15 years. I purchased $65 worth of gas and snacks and wrote a check like always. This time, Certegy denied my check and my wife had to use her account to pay for all of this. Granted I did just change banks and my new account has very low check #s, but this isn't the first time I had written a "large" amount on the account. When I asked why, the lady (who has known me for 20 years) said she had no idea and they had been having problems with Certegy off and on. She gave me the denial slip the machine spits out and told me to call and complain, so I did.
As with the earlier stories on the Certegy page on this site, I was given a B.S. runaround and told it was for my own good as well as Circle K's. I was as amused as I was offended. When I asked the rep (I don't recall his name) what caused this to happen, he told me it was proprietary info and he would not tell me as it could "compromise the security Certegy provides for their customers". To this I said, "That's nice, but now I have to worry about who I do business with," and, "several of the places I have shopped for all of my 39 years use Certegy and I could no longer shop with them with any confidence." He didn't seem to be concerned that his company's policies could harm my local business.
Now, in order for me to write checks on this new account, I'm going to have to purchase new checks with a higher check # - which means I have to discard $30 worth of low # checks and pay $30 to replace them or I will only be able to pay mail-in bills until I have used enough check to build up to the higher #s that should pass the "proprietary" system Certegy uses. As if it wasn't bad enough that I had to switch banks because my neighbors got greedy and sold to a less reputable banking concern, now I can't write checks at stores I've shopped at all my life without worrying about being humiliated by some faceless, useless, worthless company like Certegy. And as of today, through my research on Certegy, it sounds like Certegy is up for sale for at least the 3rd time.
I guess I shouldn't complain, however. They did offer to send me an application for their Certegy Gold system to "hopefully help expedite" my check writing activity. Trouble is, all of the info they want me to provide them, they already have on file or have access to. So what do you do? Change everything about how and who you do business with or try to fight a company who doesn't answer to you or the stores that you use, only the corporations that own the stores. It's not much of a choice I'd say.

In the space of the last 48 hours, my wife has had a check declined at two different merchants. The first, Cache (on 09/15 for about $100), declined to accept her check after contacting Certegy and refused to give her the reason for the decline. I had to call Cache and find someone who could give me a phone number to contact. It was not even the correct phone number and I had to be rerouted to the correct department. "Code 2" was the reason. In other words, it was because Certegy did not like my "spending pattern" and declined the check - not because of any returned checks! Then yesterday, 09/16, my wife's check for $163 was denied again - this time at the eye doctor's office. Again, the merchant could not give the reason, but I called Certegy again and got the same response - "Code 2.”
The recorded message said I could join Certegy's "Gold Club" or something like that and there would be no charge. However, after being on hold - not once but twice - for over 30 minutes each time, I'm loathe to try to contact them. The bottom line: this is ridiculous that a company has that much power over my finances! I don't have any NSF checks that would be a plausible reason for a decline. They don't like the way I'm spending my money. Someone (me to start with!) needs to contact the Senate Finance Committee with complaints about this company.
Certegy, in their recorded message I received when I called in, stated that they told the merchant the reason for the decline. Either that's a lie or the merchant is lacking enough smarts to understand what "Code 2" means. If a merchant gets a "Code 2", the remedy would be to ask for additional identification - not turn down a sale. Allegedly, retail merchants need all the help they can get in order to boost sales. This is not helping.

The check was declined by Certegy. I obtained the phone number from the check-out clerk and contacted Certegy and was told the reason for the decline was my profile in their computer, not due to bad credit nor returned checks, that the check did not fit my check writing profile. I was told it was declined as much for my protection (fraud-ID theft) as for protection of the merchant.
I was then informed I could fill out a Certegy Gold application form and if approved by them, I could write all the checks I wanted and be approved. I find that unjust and should be illegal, why should they be allowed to profile me. I own my home, my car is paid for and I pay my credit card off every month. The application I received from Certegy wanted a voided check to obtain my routing # and account #, why did they not check that when declining my check? My debit card was accepted without hesitation. Consequences: It was mainly the humiliation of standing in the store and having everyone think you are writing hot checks.

Yesterday, having spent several hours at Dillard's searching out linens, flatware, service sets, etc. with a total value of purchases in excess of $1,000, I attempted to pay with my Chase checking account. Certegy declined the check for the special order Noritake set. I talked to a Certegy employee, who advised me that their "computer model found me a risk" and that such "risk" designation was very possibly due to the fact that I write few checks using my Chase account and that the check amount was outside my normal spending pattern. The employee directed me to use another form of payment and informed me that he had no authority or capability to override the Certegy computer model.
I then left the store. I had no desire to continue to do business with a company (Dillard's) who relied on such an inflexible and offensive company as Certegy. But shame on me, I had not learned, nor suspected, that Certegy had a broad impact in the Fort Worth area. So, I went to Best Buy to purchase a needed personal computer monitor and a desired laptop. Of course, I called Certegy again and spoke with a supervisor, who, after looking at my history and finding neither blemish nor "bounced" checks, stated that I needed to pay in cash or by debit card, as the Certegy computer model had labeled me (and my Chase check) a "risk" due to the use history of that particular account.

I stupidly gave them all that information, including my banking information. Certegy is bogus; their tactics are idiotic but what can you expect from a company based in Florida? I'm sorry, but many of my worst retail experiences have to do with merchants from that state or Texas. Go figure. It seems I didn't fall into their prescribed "guidelines" - writing multiple checks for increasing amounts. It was a 40% off sale, for God's sake. I swear I will never shop at Macy's again, or any other store that uses Certegy. They supposedly have signs in the store letting the customer know they use this outfit. Macy's loss.
Certegy is targeting good customers along with the bad, sort of like the dolphins being caught when the fisherman uses dragnets to catch tuna (I'm the dolphin).
