My account was closed without notice and I was charged a fee of $60.00. I found out it was "research fee". Their definition was: Acct research takes place when you visit a banking center and have an associate research an item on your acct. I never did this.
My branch told me to call cust. service. When I asked for an explanation of this fee, she just hung up on me.

I am a 17-year-old student in a technical high school. Each week I work a few days and attend school the others, so my deposits are small amounts ($175 to $225) . My employer issues checks drawn on Wachovia. Each time (3 weeks in a row) the funds would be held over the weekend. On the Labor Day weekend they were held until Tuesday. I made Visa charges based on the amount the customer service stated that I had available, but I incured NSF charges because the funds had not cleared until a following business day . The bank manager reversed one NSF for $35 but not the first for $22.00 and then suggested that I deposit the funds as cash . On Thursday I did. I cashed the check and made a cash deposit, however the deposit was after 2 o'clock. I then used my debit card that evening and made a charge against the account. Now I have three nsf charges. They stated that when you make a charge the funds are withheld right away, but why is the cash not available? My dad asked them, "What happens to the cash overnight, who gets the benefit?" They said no one, you might as well keep the money until the next day . So I can't deposit my payroll check, and I cant deposit cash and draw on it the same day. I will look around for another bank. Wachovia is making money on the overnight possesion of these funds, but a 17-year-old can't deposit money (cash) and go to McDonalds with his own money without getting an NSF charge .
To date , because of the NSF charges ($127.00) and delay on getting my car (something very important to a young guy), MY car had to stay at the repair shop for two weeks at a charge of $7.00 per day.

It seems to me that Wachovia has carte blanch to do whatever it wants and take whatever money it wants from their customers. NSF fees seem a SCAM for them to make money. They wait to notify you so that new charges can accumulate before you even know what is going on. They process the most expensive items to force multiple transactions to be effected. So what are my choices? Also on multiple occasions, I have been given information by the branch staff that I accepted as truth, that was NOT, and cost ME money. Why are their no checks and balances within the financial sector? We can keep writing these complaints but nothing ever comes from them. Where are our advocates?
$420 in bank fees due to misinformation provided to me by Wachovia's employees!

A Certified check was addressed to Pay to the order of Bank of America and or [my full name]. it was deposited on 9/17/2007, and I was not informed that it will be held. As a resolt of the check being held it led to four personal checks being returned. Bank of America posted on-ine that the money was there but the checks would not clear. They charged me $210 for returned checks. Not only did i get charged from them, but the bills not paid caused those companies to charge me as well. The only company that receives money was Bank of America. They took their funds out before the check was cleared, so if the funds were avaiable to them why wouldn't they let others collect their payments? it took 10 days for the check to clear, and now that they finally released the check there is not enough to cover any of the checks because they took their money (excuse me--my money). i feel that it was unfair and this bank is the worst. They are not loyal to their customers. The branch customer service reps were worthless in helping me. I will be closing my account as of today. My water bill, phone bill, electric bill and doctor bills were all sent back, and i was charged double because of returned checks. There is not enough to cover two charges for each.

Our trouble with Bank of America began shortly after we opened the checking/savings accounts. Like many people, we live paycheck to paycheck, and cannot rely on this bank to credit our paychecks in a timely fashion with any degree of reliability. We too have suffered from their odd posting practices, to the tune of $35 each incident. Two days ago, I made a deposit of $400 cash in person. Today that deposit is still listed as pending on our online account. Though the amount is shown as available, the pending listing indicates that the cash I deposited has NOT posted to our account. Little sneaky practices such as these has me looking for another bank. I only hope closing the accounts will be less painful, though I am not encouraged by the numerous accounts I've heard from others.
It's been a snowballing financial fiasco for us. Excessive fees, long, drawn out procedures to get deposits credited (and yes, often cash deposits!) to our account. I dread signing into our online account, as I never know what trick of time they will pull next. We have now resorted to paying a $4 fee to the local grocery store to cash my husband's paychecks and pay bills with cash. This is on top of the $5 a month we pay for the privilege of having an account with Bank of America. I'm beginning to think stuffing our mattress with cash is a safer alternative, and that's very sad indeed.

I am closing my B of A account after 30 years because I'm tired of being robbed in the form of excessive overdraft fees. I think the way they report transactions to a checking account is not the order in which they actually hit the account. The transactions are paid from largest to smallest in order to maximize overdraft fees should the account become overdrawn (B of A claims this is a customer preference).
I called and was told there was nothing they could do as this policy was in writing and I received the policies when I opened the account. NO, I DID NOT! I opened the account over 30 years ago in a small town bank that was taken over by B of A. Bank of America has made hundreds off of me in stupid maintenance fees. I'm through!

I was just added onto my husband's checking account and wanted to change my direct deposit. I didn't have any checks to provide to my work, so in place of a canceled check, they requested an account verification letter.
I called Bank of America to request this letter and was assured I would receive it in 2 days. Today I checked my online banking and found that I've been charged $10 for requesting this letter.
Ten dollars for a simple letter? Why is it not part of basic CUSTOMER SERVICE to provide this simple service?

B of A takes the cake as the worst customer service I have ever seen in my lifetime.
If you call the online dept and have a problem or issue you will be transfered and put on hold for at least 20 minutes or hung up/cut off. I even went to the bank branch and the online, so-called service rep cut off the banker.
They promise to give you a bonus if you open an account and never pay it. Why do they have a separate dept called the "redemption hotline" if they are not fulfilling what they promised? I have tried to call them at least 10 times and still have nothing to show for it.

I have called customer relations twice a month in an attempt to figure out why the bank chooses to hold my funds. I get different answers each time. The paycheck clears the account the same business day I deposit it, but the cash is not deposited to my checking account for nearly five days after that. I have called Bank of America over 50 times asking them where is the $3,000 that needs to be sent to me. Every time they tell me a different story. They hang up on me several times a day and they laugh and say "oh, we know who you are". We don't know who placed a hold on you account but you will be notified by mail. 4 days later I get a letter that states, We have placed a hold on your account. The reason given is because you have repeatedly overdrawn your account in the last 6 months.
I have a copy of my statemnt for that last 6 months and I was overdrawn 1 time and it was for a little more than $18. Now here it is the 5/22/2007 and my funds were to be posted on the 21st and the funds are still not posted to my account and the check that I deposited IT CLEARED ON THE 16th OF THIS MONTH.
I used to go and give the bank cash to pay my morgage and they said that I was not allowed to do this, that I had to write a check. Well, now I deposit the funds and I still can't write a check and the IRONY is that BOA bought up my mortgage also, so I am screwed twice.

Then weeks later we got a letter saying the account was closed. They even charged us $60 for 'research'.
We called and found out the reason -- the lady typed the SSN wrong! We called the local branch and the customer service more than 5 times. One representative couln't find the account number and told me rudely that I need to find the correct number and call later, refusing to try again. Surely I made another call immediatly with the same number and this time the representative found it easily. I do think BOA need to hire people that can at least get numbers right. No one has ever apologized. No one gave any solution other than we going back again opening another account -- why would we? To give them one more chance to mess things up?

I went to the banking center that day because I was going to make a large deposit in a CD/ dependant upon them helping me. They told me since it was BOA fault to call the 1-800 # and that customer service has the power to credit your account. I spoke to Leslie Mason in Montana and she was friendly and said she was crediting the money. She claimed that she had to convince her manager to approve the credits but she was able to convince him. I got home and noticed that only the $30 fee was credited back to me but not the $340.00 that she told me she would put back.

I immediately closed out my account, but they wouldn't let me withdraw my funds. I went outside and drained the ATM machine and never looked back. Ps. I have direct deposits going into my Wachovia Checking Account every two weeks. During the last year, on my pay-day, Wachovia has been deducting all my charges first and then included my deposit so that when Wachovia did this it looked as if I did not have enough money in my bank account. Off course, they charged me NSF fees for every charge! Last time, I had enough and called Wachovia. Their response was to hang up the phone on me twice!! When I finally got someone to talk to, they explained that my deposit was not available until it had been posted although I could see it as processing transaction on my account, and it is included in my online available balance!!
Several months, I have had to pay bills late due to not having enough funds to cover them since I have had to pay hundreds of dollars to Wachovia in NSF fees. Now, I have given up and I am switching banks. It is very time consuming and very stressful. But I am happy to be getting a new bank who seem to care about their customers (and my deposit gets posted as soon as it is deposited - no more waiting for the next day!).

I realize from reading that my experience with Wachovia was not unusual. I, too, was slapped around by the NSF fee. Though my bank showed a positive balance, Wachovia has a policy, unlike many other banks, that holds all monies used for debit. However, none of this appears on your online banking or in your balance. You must keep dilligent and copious notes of all transactions, because their customer services (ATM balance, online balances) are NOT correct AT ANY TIME--this I was told directly by Wachovia personel.

I am very disappointed with the way Wachovia clears checks. They purposely cause extreme overdraft fees in accounts. They wil hold all checks and clear larger amounts first. This caused me over $400 in over drafts fees when it should have been a much smaller amount if the amounts were smallest first (around $70-$100). I have compained to the bank and all they are doing is sanding a copy of the policy. I am going to look for a new bank Monday morning.

I might point outm that the money for these HOLDS was already taken from my account On the day my paycheck auto deposited they also paid a check that was written on my account which overdrew the account by THIRTY CENTS. The reason for the overdraft by the way was due to the fact that Wachovia charges once a month ( whenever they feel like it ) for atm useage. this hit (coincidentally ) just before my paycheck and the subsequent overdrafts. To make a long story short they charged me for 17 overdrafts at $35 each. I was rather curtly informed by customer service that banking law allows them to do that. Legal I guess but ethical I think not. I can simply imagine how hard the banking industry lobbied for that law. This is outright criminal and should be dealt with.

I kept saying that I didn't need money and he kept telling me that it was FREE. He said it usually cost $600 or $700 but it was free to me and I would have to get my lawyer to fill out papers.
Today I get a call about a closing. No one ever said that I was taking out a second mortgage since my house is paid for.
Tonight my daughter was with me when I received a call about the closing papers. She flipped out, asking why I was getting a second mortgage. I didn't know that I was getting a mortgage.
I don't think they should be using these type of scare tactics to get an account. I think Wachovia is training their financial specialists to work on the old people because this also happened to my friend at another branch of the same bank.

The girl on the phone said she had no record of the transaction ever being made. She was smug, and we got the feeling she was accusing us of making it up. We had to do so much leg work, had to drive down to the bank where the deposit was made, had to rush a payment in to cover ourselves, than had overdraft charges because we had scheduled bills to come out of that money.

This is in regards to the way they make funds available in relation to check card holds. You see, when I use the Visa check card the bank places a hold for the entire purchase amount on my account. They list each merchant and the charge amount in a section for check card holds and the balance is plainly reserved by virtue of the fact that the funds are not available to me. These may sit in the check card hold section for 3-4 days. Fine, I get it, it is proper. The problem starts when a SUBSEQUENT (and I am assuming unknown check clears and I am charged an NSF fee for every one of the check card purchases.
Let me explain, the check may have overdrawn me by only $7 but I will wind up being hit with $30 per check card as the bank (even though I had no access to the funds, and even though they essentially knew about and effectively reserved the check card funds) will clear the LATER item and then charge me maybe $200 bucks for all of the stuff they conveniently clear AFTER the SUBSEQUENT check. They actually PUT me into overdraft with their fees - which often exceed what I could hope to quickly cover (unlike the $37 OD I SHOULD have had.)

Bank Of America's online banking, ATM and Phone systems make it next to impossible to know how much money you have in your accounts unless you keep careful track on paper. The consequence is that if you are living pay check to pay check you will end up paying multiple over-draft fees. According to reps at BOA that I have spoken to -- this has been happening to a lot of customers who do not understand the so called award winning online banking system.
Their ATM does not ever synch with their online banking and neither does phone banking totals. The numbers are always different thanks to pending transactions that seem to stay in pending mode (especially for deposits) that never seem to make it on time to stop an overdraft fee. A rep told me the best way to know what's in your account is to call and speak to a rep.
Also, (odd) if you transfer money today into your over-draft (line-of-credit) account it doesn't show up in your balance until the next day. The estimated payoff amount is never correct and no one has any real answers except to say that a lot of customers have told them the same thing. I think BOA is ripping off their customers, problem is no one knows how to explain it.

What the word available means?
I did not write any checks, all my charges were made at ATM machines or debits from grocery stores that is approved or declined when I pay. All my debits were approved even though Wachovia charged $400+ in overdraft fees. I have three overdraft notices that shows my balance negative and eight ATM and approved debits combined were paid. The $30 fee for each of this items became a snow ball that I can stop. For a approved debit of $2 I paid $30 because my balance was deducted from a higher amount first even if the higher debit was made two days later. Paying the highest amount first, even if it was debit after several small amounts, caused my account to be charged $30 eleven times instead a one time $30 fee for the highest transaction. Plus $2 fee is applied any time I call the Bank to solve this solution.

We have had an $80,000 (simple interest) second mortgage 20-year loan with Fleet Bank since July 2001. No one in their institution in the past 40 months of chronic calling, being hung up on, never receiving a statement, being denied an amortization schedule, refusal to remove non-valid late charges, misreporting to the credit bureaus, not following through with disputes to the credit history, constantly passing the buck from one department to another, dept. heads not responding period, holding checks from three to thirty days before posting and that interest just keeps rocking on, changing the addresses for the payments at their direction and always trying to turn it back on the client for paperwork.
I have faxed materials that they have requested over 9 times with a grand total of 420 pages to substantiate the discrepancies on this loan and have yet to receive see one time these people have followed through with what they said they would do. We have paid interest upon interest on a simple interest loan for a grand total of over $31,000 in interest alone for over 41 months plus another $4,900 in principal. This loan has only been reduced according to them by only $4,500. Their blanket refusal to solve any of these issues has gone on year in, year out for three solid years. Not only those charges but the hours involved in trying to deal with these people and their crap, the long distance phone calls, the faxes the copies of checks I've had to pay for and still not one justification for this mass ripoff. The loss in the ability to take the interest paid off of our taxes because of the limitations with the IRS. I have my original notes from their mortgage banker that solicited us. This was presented as a fully amortized for 20-year simple interest loan, not I reiterate, not a revolving never-ending problem. This is interstate fraud, period.

Back in July of this year, I applied for a personal loan from Fleet Bank. My mother had to co-sign with me so I could get $9000 to consolidate bills. I serve in the military and I am stationed in North Dakota. I went home on leave to sign the paperwork and that’s when the problems began. On the 19th of July, I went to the Reading, MA branch to sign the paperwork. I was given a receipt, which indicated the funds were deposited and available. The receipt read $9,713.96 available. I went home and immediately paid off two Fleet credit cards, which amounted to approximately $3400. Prior to leaving ND, I mailed six checks to pay my bills. The total amount of the checks written was less than the $700. I was paid by the military on the 15th.
So Fleet bank claimed I had insufficient funds to pay the $3400 to the credit card company and the six checks. I got charged six insufficient funds fees at $25 each. I called the bank and asked what’s going on. The telephone banking rep told me the funds from the $9000 loan were not available, and the receipt reflected that. I said, “Hold on a minute.” First of all, Fleet bank issued the check for $9000. The check should have cleared immediately. The representative said, "We issued the check?" I said, “Yes, I got a loan from your bank.” Then the rep proceeded to tell me my receipt indicated two numbers - a current balance amount and an available amount. The rep told me to look at the receipt, see that the available balance did not include the $9000. Well, the receipt I was issued indicated differently. According to the receipt, I had $9,713.96 available.
After many days and calls to the telephone banking center and the Reading branch, the bank finally agreed to refund me $150 in fees. Now, just the other day, I went to Target and my check was rejected. A company called Certegy had one of the six checks and claimed it was outstanding. However, I have since paid the returned amount. Certegy wanted notification from the company, who I originally wrote the check to, to confirm the amount was paid. They also wanted a fax from Fleet Bank indicating a bank error to waive the fee from the returned check. I called Fleet Bank and they refused to send a fax unless they got a copy of the receipt I was issued when I got the $9000 loan. I explained what happened back in July and they said the bank made no errors.
I then asked why I was refunded $150 if the bank made no error. The lady on the phone told me I was given the money as a courtesy for my troubles and maintained the bank made no errors. She stated it is a common practice for Fleet Bank to give money to their customers and just yesterday she gave somebody $280 for absolutely no reason. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe for a minute any bank gives out money for no reason. I have the receipt in hand, which proves the bank wrong. I guess I’m going have to send a copy of the receipt to Fleet Bank so I can get my account unfroze. The bottom line, Fleet Bank has terrible customer service, which lies to the customers. Also, for such a successful bank, they obviously have poor management of their records and no clue what they print on receipts.

I made a deposit to my wachovia checking account for 3000.00 on may 26,2004. Check was from my suntrust account. The money was debited my suntrust account on may 27, 2004, yet they placed a hold on my funds that were already in my account. I had several checks to come through and was returned. I was charged over 360.00 for bank fee, not including checks that were returned. I went online serval times sending messages to wachovia from my online banking, I call customer service serval times and I always directed to someone else.

Fleet has a habit of charging these outrageous overdraft fees. This has happened repeatedly with me. What I think is one of the most unjust reasons for charging the overdraft fee was one day I had went to an outside bank ATM. I know with certain banks Fleet charges their own ATM fee. Well I knew in my balance I had just enough money to cover what I was taking out ($20.00) and the ATM fee ($1.50). After the transaction, I still had a few cents in my checking account. When I called to check my balance, I was charged $30 because I didn’t have enough money for Fleet's charge.

Bank deducted 450.00 in bounced check charges, even though funds were available to ffset at least some of these purchases. Spoke to three people including branch manager (who did nothing), and finally got 90.00 back, but still no explanation.

We arranged with Bank of America investment services to manage our retirement accounts. Immediately, they sold all funds we had invested with Fidelity on low-market days rather than cost averaging the sales over a period of time as agreed. Then they invested our funds into their Bank of America mutual funds.
After contacting upper level management personnel in Bank of America they both denied any wrongdoing and refused to refund any of our lost funds. We believe Bank of America failed to provide us with competent and appropriate financial management services.
Lost over $200,000 of our retirement funds.

This seems to happen all the time with this bank, but I'll give the most recent example. I deposited a paycheck on Friday (I'm told it was after 5, but I don't honestly remember). At the time I had a few hundred in the bank. The paycheck was for over a thousand. I then spent some money on the weekend, and on Monday, I was still fine. On Tuesday a check went into the bank that went over the amount of money that was "officially" in the bank. They said that because I deposited my check on a Friday, they wouldn't get it till Monday and it would not be cleared until Wednesday. I didn't know this at the time. On Wednesday, they charged me $50 for insufficient funds, but that's when my check was getting cleared. I just don't see why they can get away with charging these obscene amounts. Plus I technically had the money in the account, but they just don't care. They say that legally they are allowed and it's a legitimate fee.
I just don't have a lot of money and to lose $50 when they already charge between $20 and $30 a month for normal use is insane. I had the money in the bank the week before and they said it hadn't gone through. Smaller banks cant get away with taking this much money away from their clients. It almost since Fleet is sooooo big, they don't care about the individual people that use the bank and just take as much money as they want. Plus the costs go up by $5 every year. And you can't even use a little bank because Fleet it buying them all out. I used to be with a normal bank but got forced into being with Fleet when they bought them. I feel that someone should control the banks a little more so that the individual people out there don't get their money stolen from them the way that this bank is doing.

Over the past few months, I had been withdrawing funds from my Fleet checking account and transferring funds to a newly-opened internet bank account. On October 27th, I withdrew my last $20 from my Fleet account and then closed my account with Fleet later that afternoon (I had no outstanding checks to clear) at which time the bank employees gave me the 88 cents that was remaining in my bank account.
I soon received a letter from Fleet stating that I had overdrawn my closed account since they had not applied the $4 service fees for that month and so the $20 that I had withdrawn from my ATM was "overdrawn" -- presented for payment against insufficient funds" -- and retroactively slapped with a $25 fee. Moreover the 88 cents that was given to me when I closed my account was also slapped with a $25 fee for overdrawing on insufficient funds -- for a total of $50 in penalty fees, just for closing my account.

This letter is to inform you of my displeasure and disgust with the service I received on Friday, December 3, 1999. I attempted to use the outside Fleet ATM machine located on 52nd street and Broadway in New York, NY at 5:30 pm. The machine rebooted in the middle of the transaction and kept my ATM card. It is unacceptable your system procedures allow technicians to reboot ATM machines remotely without checking to see if the system is busy. It is unacceptable the outside ATM has no telephone nearby to call for assistance. You have to leave the machine and find a pay phone to get assistance. It is unacceptable that when I called to get assistance and asked for a compliant to be logged, the only information requested was where the ATM machine was located. There was no need to ask my name or any other person information because those personal facts are of no concern to your firm.
In addition, I received useless information telling me to call my bank. My bank is not at fault here. There is nothing wrong with my account. Your equipment failed and left me for the evening unable to access my accounts and left my accounts at risk. I was out in the city with no other means of getting money. I now, know if I had used a better quality bank, without antiquated equipment, I would not have had this problem. This letter is to let you know you don't have to want to know my name when a problem occurs but I will not tolerate being stranded without assistance and being treated as if is not important. I am also sending a copy of this letter to Consumer Affairs.
Unfortunately, I was uninformed about your poor customer service policies but I will let others know about it. If you are concerned, you can read below for further details. I inserted my NYCE ATM card. The machine requested my PIN. As I attempted to enter the number, the machine proceeded to reboot. It kept my card and never completed the transaction. I am a computer technician and supported similar systems, so I know and am able to recognize a reboot when it happens. I proceeded to call your customer service number supplied and the operator could only inform me that they could not assist and that I would have to call my bank. I proceeded to tell the operator this is unacceptable and I want to file a complaint. She asked where was the ATM located and then told me, "Okay, you have to call your bank," and disconnected the call.
When is it acceptable to render service to a customer and no support? If these are your banking policies, it is a wonder that you are still in business. Or, maybe it would have been a different situation if I had a Fleet Bank account and your company was able to manipulate my funds to gain revenue for itself. Maybe then if I called for assistance, I would have been able get an informed intelligent response.
