I purchased a 2004 Dodge Durango on January 17, 2013, for $12,302.45. Three days after purchasing the vehicle the engine light came on. My wife and I took it in to two different Pep Boys, to have a free full diagnostic run on the engine. It came back with one code for emissions. We changed out the gas cap, and still the engine light is on. Shortly after that, the belt broke in use, and we changed that. Shortly after that, we had to replace the the battery, because we were constantly losing power. Shortly after that we had to change the water pump and radiator, because they were both leaking.
On Mother's Day of this year, we had to have the vehicle towed to our mechanic, because the timing chain or a valve in the engine head broke loose and a piston was bouncing it all over the head. We were told that vehicles this dealer sells are quality vehicles, and also states quality vehicles in the paper work he gave us when we puchased the vehicle. The exact statement on the papers is: "Remember, quality cars and excellent service are our goal."
We have already put in over $1,000 of repairs into this vehicle, and at this time with the vehicle at our mechanic now, the cost to repair the vehicle could be $2,000 or more. My wife is the primary driver to get back and forth to work. She is now riding her bike in the dark in the mornings, and in inclement weather, while we are still making payments on this rotten lemon of a vehicle, that is supposed to be paid off in full by October of this year. My wife is EXTREMELY upset, and we both want the total amount of the vehicle we paid refunded.

I bought the 06 Durango with 60,000 miles on it in 2012. No major issues. I did the oil changes and the brakes like was supposed to. All of a sudden in 2014 it started shutting off while driving in the winter months of GA. I have taken into the shop three times and each time they say they don't see anything wrong.. It shuts off a minimum of once a day... Sometimes 6 times a day... I'm at a loss because I still owe $8,000 on this truck

I bought a used 2011 Dodge Durango in 2012. The vehicle only had about 14,000 miles on it. A few months after I got it, I started having intermittent problems with the transmission. While driving, the transmission did not seem to be changing gears. The RPMs would increase, but the vehicle would barely move. I would have to stop, put the vehicles in neutral and then back into drive. So far, that has worked. However, the problem seems to be occurring more frequently now. My Durango has less than 52,000 miles on it, so there is no excuse for the transmission (or whatever is causing the problem) to be having this problem. I have gotten 3 recalls notices since purchasing the vehicle, and each time I have taken the vehicle to the dealership to have the recall part replaced, I have mentioned the problems with the transmission. I have an appointment today to have the transmission looked at, but the diagnostic fee is $95.
I do not know what exactly is behind the transmission problems, but the problem needs to be fixed because it is a matter of safety. The fact that the vehicle slows down to the point that it is barely moving concerns me greatly. I am surprised that I have not been involved in an accident due to this problem. This is the only vehicle my family has, and we cannot be without a vehicle for an indefinite period of time if the dealer has to keep it for some reason, or if the problem eventually results in my vehicle not starting or in it breaking down.

I bought this truck back 2007 with 48,500 miles - 2004 Dodge Durango. So far it's been a good truck - 5.7 Hemi v8. In the past 6 years everything has gone out in it: my speedometer stopped working, my anti-lock brakes pump stopped, air condition stopped working for no reason at all. I've had some repairs. When it rains the motor acts like it wants die. Now the truck was running fine until this winter. Here in Texas we have had a bad snow and sleet storm for about week or so. During February 2015, I didn't use my truck at all. When I went to start it, it made loud sound like something explode it inside the engine. Then it was making a loud clicking sound, then the motor locked on me...out of car. Don't know what do...

My 2005 Dodge Durango SLT blown a head gasket and I have a warranty on it. The problem is the warranty won't cover the head gasket if the cylinder block isn't damaged and my mechanic is pretty sure it's the head gasket that's blown. All I have to do is pay a deductible on my warranty but if the warranty isn't gonna cover the problem because the other issue didn't occur, why hasn't Dodge fixed this problem throughout the years? I know somebody had to complain! And if I take it to the dealership I have to pay $100 to have its diagnostic and then if it's what my mechanic said originally, I could be looking anywhere from $1,000 repair to a $4,000. This is so not fair and something needs to be done. I haven't had this car a year yet.

The right front tire came off with all parts with it. I'm lucky I wasn't still on 95, I would have been dead or someone else. The insurance said they couldn't fix it.

We purchased a 2000 Durango SLT in 04 at an auction with 38000 miles on her. Only reason we wanted was because had to have 3rd row, V8 and a Dodge. At 85000 had transmission rebuilt, 13 months later rebuilt again shops fault. I love this truck haven't had any electrical issues, but go thru hubs every 2 years, pads and rotors the same. Just started getting what sounds like a lifter tick, and quite few oil leaks, just hit 196,000 miles. I'm planning on pulling motor and rebuilding and driving it myself back and forth to work, love the truck.

I never had a vehicle worth more than $500. I worked hard and saved my money for over ten years to buy me a nice ride. I fell in love with the 02 durango body style and had $10,000 of HARD earned cash over ten years of minimum wages. Borrowed the rest. After 30,000 miles of babying, polishing, cleaning, no smoking, garage keeping, no 4x4-ing, I've got a beautiful yard ornament built by dodge. Nobus.... you da-* right no bus - pcm, tps, plugs, coils, plenum gasket, hood to cowl seal, ball joints, tie rods, speed sensor, lifters, rocker arms... I'm getting upset, Ima stop here. The list goes on. Still not fixed - smokes, knocks, shakes, won't pull out of garage it was being worked on at, had to pay tow!!!! Thanks a lot dodge. Every nickel I made since high school is in your purse - you're welcome. I'll never recommend you to my worst enemy. Kumho tires still holding strong 1000 bucks. It's a disgrace to you to be on that pile. I still got her though in garage hoping Mopar will man up - got all my paperwork ready. Brokenhearted. And worst we are just about to get a seventh PCM put in and programmed and it only has 143 K miles on it. It’s putting us in the poorhouse. Chrysler needs to man up and recall these lemons. So many other people have same problem. Called Chrysler while back and they hadn’t heard of this problem. **!

Bought 2004 Durango from first owner with 30,000 miles on it. Did my research and found nothing about the engine trouble in the Durango Hemi. Maintained as per manufacturer recommendations. I loved this truck... Hemi engine, sun roof, DVD player, etc! There is a leak in both passenger doors that lets rain get inside the door, sloshes around until it drains over a couple of dry days. I could have lived with that. Dropped at airport in April 2014, had 110,000 miles or so. Came back from 3 day trip to knocking in engine. No warning lights. Checked oil... it was fine. Let it idle - still had knocking. Drove 10 miles home and let it sit. Next day it was still knocking. Drove 6 miles to work, was going to drop off for service. Blew rod 1 block away. Research turned up hundreds of people experiencing similar quality issues. I won't buy another Dodge/Chrysler product again.

As I was reading through all of these reviews of the 2004 Dodge Durango it was like reading a nightmare of my own description. Just about every problem in this forum I have had with my Dodge Durango from the Cowl leak to the electrical starting issues to the stopping issues and finally the engine just blew up on me leaving the car wash. I really love the Dodge truck but the Dodge Durango is worth staying away from. I had the paint issue where the paint peeled off the side of the Durango. I had the electrical problem with my DVD player and it doesn't work now. I faithfully change my oil on time every oil change and I run full synthetic. There should be no reason the engine would just blow at 120,000 miles.
The stalling issues were a big danger as it was my wife's vehicle and several times we were traveling at highway speed and the vehicle would just stall for no reason. Then the tie rod just fell off the passenger side and luckily that was in town. Again if that was at highway speed it would've been very nasty. As a matter of fact all our miles were on the highway mostly and the vehicle was never abused. If anybody wants 04 Durango with a blown motor you're more than welcome to it. It has just over 120,000 miles and if you need a parts vehicle you can have this planter for a song. Good riddance.

The same thing happened to us with our 2004 Limited Durango 5.7 Hemi. Which we purchased from a Dodge dealership as a lease back in 2007. I always maintained my vehicle by changing the oil and filters on time. Also keeping up on any other maintenance that was needed. We always loved our Durango and that is why when our engine blew we were so disheartened.
Two years ago while driving our daughter to her freshmen move in day at Caldwell College it just suddenly happened. We had just gotten off of interstate 280 exit 7 about 5 miles from the college and the light comes on and seconds later the engine just locks up. We were stuck with our daughter and all of her stuff just minutes away from what should have been one of the most exciting days of her life. Talk about disappointment. My wife and I tried not to let our daughter see just how devastated we were. But honestly I was in utter disbelief, the engine completely seized up and never got any better. Luckily I had AAA at the time so later that day after we had some friends of ours pick us up and get us to the college we went back to wait for the tow truck to bring it home. I was told it would cost 6500 to replace the engine.
Well with four in College our Durango has become a planter until we can afford to do something with it. I can tell you that I have owned dozens of vehicles through the years of many different makes and models. Both for my business at the time and for personal use. Including dodge minivans when our children were young. In fact we bought this Durango after our children grew up, this was our first vehicle that my wife and I choose for us to enjoy. And we took a lot of pride and care with it. Which was not always the case with some of our other cars and trucks. As you can imagine minivans were a necessity for us not a source of pride. But the Durango was, and it was also the one and ONLY engine to EVER blow up on us. In fact I never ever even had one major engine problem with any other vehicle. Now when people I know see me and say what happened to your Durango? And I tell them, the most common response is something along the lines of "I heard those Dodge engines blow up a lot" Boy doesn't that make me feel good to own one.
One more thing I would like to mention Dodge (Mopar) for decades had the rightful reputation of having the strongest built engines out of any manufacturer. Their Mopar brand was world famous and time proven so what happened? You have disappointed so many of us and have done unimaginable damage to the Mopar brand that millions around the world loved. And I stupidly still love the Mopar brand. Which is why I still keep my Durango. So I can only hope that things get better for Mopar. Thank You

While it is up to date with times, the keyless start left me stranded with NO warning the battery was dead except a ding in the dash stating "the key was not in the vehicle". I was unable to lock or restart my car after shutting off the engine. It was a nice day out, thank God but truly this IS a huge safety issue!!! I drive in ice and snow with temps in the single digits to my job 3 times a week for 2 hours and what IF I had been traveling with children....out in the middle of nowhere, we would have frozen to death.
There was no misfortune at this time BUT I foresee MANY to come. BAD BAD BAD plan!!! I was lucky enough to be just an hour away from the dealership I had purchased 7 months ago (and yes brand new) they came and changed out the battery in the key fab, no they did not have to. I was NOT in walking distance to buy one from RadioShack or any other store either, nor should I have had to. DANGEROUS.

I had same problem I just read about. My Durango also would just die on highway or anywhere without warning. After many attempts to get it repaired and back and forth to dealer, it would never get resolved. I felt at risk and in danger with a family in the truck mostly all the time. I began to notice it would happen when it rained. After I refused to take it back home from dealer did they find issue. It was the spark plugs getting wet because the cowl was cracked.
I am not a mechanic but I also heard it referred to as a fire wall crack. My Dodge had never been in a accident. And they could not give me a answer to how that would happen. I call it a bad part. And yes I believe it takes tragic accidents before these dealers take a closer look at complaints. So sad. It cost me so much time and money. My husband had bought 4 trucks in the course of his life. But this incident has turned us away from Dodge products.

I have a 99 Dodge Durango and had a issue with it where it continually shut off on me while driving even at high rate of speed. Garages could not find the issue because no codes were coming up so I did my own research, found out that it is a computer problem. The garages laughed at me "because I am a girl telling them my opinion on it" so I ordered the part on my own and fixed it. Hahaha to them, it fixed the problem. Also had issue with ABS light and brake light coming on, no codes again. So I did my own research, again turns out to be a relay switch. Had other issue where car just would not start, would be fine one minute then shut it off and go to start it up and nothing. Would not even click like it wanted to start. So here I go again doing my own research to find out it was the pick up coil. If you call Dodge, they never heard of such a issue. Bull crap, they just do not want to do a recall. If you research the problem, you will find thousands of people who have the same issue and called Dodge like I did and they say the same thing to everyone, "This is the first we are hearing about this issue". Bull crap. I hope someone sues the hell out of them one day... Good luck...

Second day we had it, navigation went out... All issues my wife and I had with it... navigation (was replaced 7 times with new units)... Leather passenger seat had to be completely replaced... Dashboard noise issues (replaced whole dashboard, and out of service on this one issue over 30 days)... Chrome pieces connected to the vents on inside were falling off... Side passenger mirror kept coming loose... Sometimes if you hit the window up/down button on driver door the sunroof would open or close... Motor to the driver side window went bad... Sometimes the button to have the tailgate lift up or down wouldn't work... Windshield fluid sprayers stopped working....AWD service light would come on periodically....
Ya all these issues with a 2012. We sued Chrysler and got a settlement, and with that settlement they didn't have to call it a lemon... And all of these issues were not a one time deal. They were reoccurring except for the replacement of the leather seat. Needless to say we got rid of it on trade in. Got what we owed on it and now we are ENJOYING OUR BRAND NEW 2014 BUICK ENCLAVE. Causes misfire and the truck to act very limp. I have took it to the dealership. They let it sit for hours. Then looked at it. Said we don't see anything wrong with it. The truck has stalled on my family. Left us and the four kids stranded for up to 39 mins. I had do my own research about it to find the problem. Hood cowl panel is a very well-known problem with the 2004-2005 Durangos. The dealerships should easily known about this problem. Dodge should pay to fix it since the truck will just stall going down the road or even the highway. But they have refused to do anything about the safety issues. We purchased a pre-owned 2011 Dodge Durango from Victory Honda in Victoria, TX. It still had an original warranty on it, but we also purchased an extended 1 as well. With our second oil change the dealership stated that we needed to replace our rack and pinion and also the power steering pump... We did that but weren't having any issues with it previously... Then the dealership told us we needed a wheel alignment so they did that also... When we got the Durango back it wasn't driving correctly. It kept going off to the side when you let go of the wheel... We took it back to them about 6-7 times telling them there was something wrong... and each time we were told it was fixed... I finally had to call myself instead of sending my husband and chewed them out that they finally fixed it right and admitted that they hadn't set the wheel straight when they fixed it...
After that the next or so oil change after we got our Durango back the battery light came on and my husband took it back to dealer and was told the alternator needed to be replaced so we did that... Then dealer started having issues with the truck and they couldn't figure out what was wrong... They told us it's probably the battery so we replaced that... Then they said it might be a module... After a week or more being with a rental they said they fixed it so we took it home...
We ended up going to a birthday party and had the truck sitting for a couple of hours and when we were ready to go the truck was completely dead. The key to unlock would not work. We put key in ignition and it wouldn't start... key was stuck/locked in ignition. Ended up having to call tow service to center and help us. We didn't get home until about 1 am... with our 2 kids... So now we are in the same situation without our vehicle... We aren't sure if it's because it's a Dodge problem or if we just purchased a lemon...

I was charged for the replacement of this part, and I agreed to the charge before they ordered it, just over $1100. I just assumed they had the goal of fixing the issue. I collected my Dodge Durango this evening, paid for all service and parts. But the ABS "brake" sensor warning light still continues to shine on the dash continuously. I believe they explained that when the "brake" sensor light is on, the ABS brakes are not going to be functioning. I was provided with a very confusing "explanation" by the service men. I even asked if this explanation could be emailed.
I paid just over $1100 for an explanation of why the part and service did not work to fix the issue. I was not given a choice of a reduced price for this non-repair. Nyle Maxwell Dodge Supercenter did not make it clear that they would fix the problem for me by ordering an extra $350 part. They asked me to pay another $350 so they could order some more stuff. I declined. I felt there would be no end to my spending, and no promise the next part was all that was required. There is too much "signing-off" required by me as a customer, and not enough commitment by Nyle Maxwell Dodge Supercenter to finish a project. I feel they are not keeping their commitment of what I signed-off, to make that ABS "brake" sensor warning light stop shining constantly.

My check engine light came on about a week ago, and my car (2006 Durango) started shimmy-ing, almost like I was driving over train tracks. I would have suspected a tire problem, except for my check engine light being on and a ticking noise the engine started making. It also idles kind of rough when I am stopped or slow way down. I have taken it to four different places in the last week (including a Dodge dealership) and have spent $1,200 to have a tune up, engine flush, oil change (which I have always had done anyway), new MDS solenoids put in, etc.
I took it to another shop this morning, and the guy told me that basically I need to have the engine replaced. It will cost about $7,000. My car is barely 6 years old and has way under 150,000 miles on it. I have only had it for a year, so I can't afford to trade it in either. I have read all over the internet that this is a common problem for the 5.7 Hemi.
I can't believe that Dodge will accept no responsibility for the crap cars they are making, even though my tax money helped "bail" them out! How can it be that they are building these cars to fail, know about it, and continue to stay in business? Someone needs to step in. This is ridiculous! I used to swear by American cars, but now, I'm not so sure. One thing that is for sure, I will never buy another car from Chrysler, Jeep, or Dodge!

When I was driving home, it felt like the brakes where on. So I pulled over and checked the brake and it was off. So I took it back to the dealer and they looked at it and said everything was fine. A few days later, the seat belt light came on and would not go off; in fact it's still on. Then again it felt like the brake was on when I was driving. Then I noticed my four wheel lock light was on and it was hard to drive and turn.
So I called back the dealer and said you guys did something to my car. I stated it was just fine until I had the recall fixed. They said it was not their fault and they could look at it for a price. So I took it to another Dodge dealer and they said it was most likely the computer in the car needed to be updated. So I paid to have that done and the car worked for a few days. Then the 4 wheel lock came on again. I can drive a few days with no issue, then that 4 wheel lock comes on. To be honest, I'm scared it's electrical and that the car could catch on fire and kill my family.

In August of 2011, both of my front wheels of my 2001 Dodge Durango were leaning inward causing the tires to wear unevenly. My husband lifted the car up using a jack to provide a better look at the cause. As he was looking at the right front tire, it actually fell completely off the frame! Thank goodness we were not driving when it fell off! I have six children and they are always with me, we all could have been killed. Dodge needs to recall these faulty parts before someone is killed!
The use of our second car is gone for a family of eight, that is a big deal. We are Stuck with a worthless, inoperable vehicle. We are very lucky that we were not injured or killed. The next uninformed Dodge Durango owner may have a incident that ends tragically!

As a former owner of a 2001 Durango, I came to love it. I bought a second one. One of the only problems I had was this stupid blower motor resistor switch! I replaced one in my old Durango, I became a veteran of replacing it. The first time, the high setting stopped working and only operated in low. Well now, this time it went out on low and only operated on high! Not thinking much of it, I would get a replacement after the holidays, since it was Thanksgiving night. I wasn't in as much of a hurry this time because I could still use the heat to defrost the windows fine.
So we were at the in-laws. After a great Thanksgiving dinner, I went out and let the truck heat up for the kids and wife. After getting everyone ready in about 10 minutes, we returned to my truck only to find it completely filled with smoke and a heaping glob of plastic, on fire, laying on my floor mat. Had this not melted and fell out of the bottom of the dash, the fire may have spread.
Quickly putting down my daughter, I grabbed the floor mat out of the truck, I realized how thankful I was that night! It could have happened while driving, could have really burnt up my truck had we not came out of the house, or what if I had one of my kids was in the truck while I ran back inside?
Please guys! Don't make the mistake I made. If this resistor is giving you problems, get it fixed right away! I really hope Dodge reads these threads and gets their head out of their money before someone dies! I don't understand how something so dangerous could not be listed as a recall! Perhaps someone needs to die before Dodge will make a recall!

I have been having problems with my 2004 Dodge Durango. After reading the other complaints, I seem to be having similar problems. I have no AC now, but it would work sometimes. The issue started with the rear AC, then the front. Now, nothing.
I also have a problem with the engine. I stall at traffic lights, stops signs, and my check engine has been on for as long as a year. Mechanic gets it off, and then it comes back on. They said it was ignition coils, which were changed. I love my Durango, and I would like to purchase the 2011 edition, but after the issues I don't know if I want to.

While driving to work on secondary roads at approximately 30mph, the engine smoked, seized, overheated, bucked and failed. I had it towed and a mechanic immediately noticed a sludge around the top of some gasket. Before further inspection, he said immediately that it was not a good sign at all and most likely would need a new engine. I was shocked as this truck is our secondary vehicle and has only been driven approximately 20,000 miles in 3 years, with regular oil changes and no issues whatsoever! No indication was given via warning lights of any issues nor was there any change in how it drove immediately prior to seizing.
After a day, the mechanic confirmed that it needed total engine replacement. We assumed that we were being taken advantage of and had it towed to another repair place, who only went on to say the same: New engine needed! After researching this online, it seems that many of this make and model have had issues with this, yet there is no recourse with the manufacturer. We were owners of a 1999 Dodge Durango prior to this and that vehicle also needed total engine replacement after 60 days, but thankfully, it was covered through the dealership. We are no longer under any type of warranty and since this is a known issue, we feel that Daimler Chrysler should recognize this known issue based on the amount of complaints there is regarding this! Not only will we be abandoning this vehicle as we are told that if we replace the engine for approximately $4000, it will more than likely to happen again, but we will never, ever purchase a vehicle through this manufacturer again! Shame on Daimler/Chrysler for not acknowledging their fault!

I put new ball joints & shocks in it. After noticing the funny feel, it's about time to do it again, the tires have lasted just fine (Les Schwab align & tires). I service the transmission every summer. I have had to replace the water pump and the speed pickup sensor in the rear-end. Oh, and recently the cassette/CD players do not work any longer. So they got the light off and since then, I have had the vehicle shut down while driving along at anywhere from 20-50 mph. Now, the engine has blown.
I have researched this problem and found out that this is a major problem with the 5.7 Hemi, that Dodge does not want to own up to or help you with. I would just like to say the reason people are having problem with 99 and 2000 Durango and Dakota front ends is the way they have the ball joints positioned. I have been a mechanic for 15 years and know for a fact that this is a factory defect.
The vehicles described above are having severe ball joint problems causing damage and injury due to 3 things: First, poor design as the ball joints are both facing downwards instead of facing each other, therefore dispersing more weight to lower joint than to the upper joint. Second, no grease inserts. The most critical thing for anything to work properly. For example, don't put oil in your car and see what happens. Third, all ball joints should be pressed in and not bolted or riveted. This is one of Dodge's most idiotic designs ever.
Finally, fix the above problems and I will state my mechanic professionalism on the fact that you will not have any more complaints about '99 and '00 Dodge Durangos.

I work at a body shop so I am around cars all day and work with a very talented staff. I bought this truck with 20,000 miles on it. I have changed the oil so frequently that people were saying you're changing that again, like every 2000 miles. Then driving it home one day, the oil pressure dropped to 0 instantly and check gauge lights came on and it started ticking and losing power. I couldn't believe it. I instantly shut it down, had it towed home and then towed to work.
We decided to pull the oil pan and take a look. In order to do that, you must drop the front differential and other misc. parts to get the oil pan off. Its' a bit of a job even on the lift but I have done worse. Let's just say the shop was amazed at the amount of sludge that was in the pan and on the bottom of the shield that covers the crank. I replaced the pick up tube and screen that was 3/4 blocked with sludge build up. The screen opening that lets the oil go to the pump is way too small, a 1/4 of the size it should be! I have pictures for anyone interested!
Their jaws dropped knowing how often I changed my oil. I will tell you there are thousands of complaints with the same problem and they are also being told that they neglected their engine. That's bull! I was fortunate enough to have a facility where I could lift the vehicle and take it apart. I feel sorry for the ones who have to pay for the work; I'm sure it's in the $1000s.
This is a very serious issue that is happening to thousands of consumers. What sucks is that I still like the truck even tough I have had to replace window motors, power steering lines that rotted, door speakers, door switches, wiper arms, heater relays and so on... Something needs to happen!

Like so many others on here, our 2008 Dodge Durango developed engine knock at 64k miles. We took it to a Dodge dealership (Maroone Dodge of Pembroke Pines) and we were told by the service manager (Kenny) that it was a sludge engine, and that Chrysler wouldn't cover it under the lifetime powertrain warranty because sludge engine is always the result of poor maintenance. I have all but two of my oil change records, as those two I did myself. Because I cannot furnish every record, Chrysler will not even consider honoring my warranty. My wife and I have launched a Twitter campaign against them, and we have their attention. We are working toward making #ChryslerSellsLemons and #BoycottChrysler trending topics on everyone's Twitter feed. So far, we have gotten some high level attention from Twitter executives. The bottom line is that even if I had missed two oil changes, that would not cause oil pump failure and catastrophic engine damage. Reduced engine life for sure, but catastrophic failure at 64k? Well no, it started idling when parked and will cut off. I will be going at a speed of 15 and cut off.
Sometimes it won’t even start back up. I took it back to the dealer and they looked at it and said it was internal engine problem. They said they will have to pull it but the cost was $500 and not knowing if the warranty would cover it. Well, the dealer made us a deal that he will cover the $500 but he said if they take it apart and it was a head gasket, it will be $2,000 plus to put the engine back together. Where to start? Well, I had purchased a Dodge Durango from Autex shipped up from Florida; it is in excellent condition and "drove" fine up until I hit 60,000 miles. Now of course, the warranty is up. Stuff always will go wrong, which it did. Like a lot of people who own a Durango, they say they're great cars with plenty of hp but does the transmission really get the job done? My answer is no! It was a dark cold night on some back roads and I started to notice through my music that the engine's RPS were in the red. So I let off the gas and it shifted but it shifted into neutral.
Now I'm going down the road and I can rev the motor in drive and I can feel the gears catching and going back into neutral. This went on till the car came to a rolling stop. I put the pedal to the floor and it caught and I started to move again but it seemed like it was half in gear kind of like when you slip a clutch in a standard. To this day, it does that on and off depending on how cold the outside temp is. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my Durango?

I have a dodge one ton pick up that I purchased for a landscape business in 2005. I used the vehicle as part of a business and personal transportation until March 2009 when the vehicle developed a knocking sound in the engine and I have not been able to drive ever since. The truck started making this noise during the following: "We were returning from town with the vehicle and the vehicle was operating normally. The tuck was loaded with 5 people in the cab (one diesel mechanic, one diesel truck driver, two contractors and one business administrator) two bags of blankets/t-shirts and a full ice chest in the bed.
We continued up the beach until we were about 50-75 yards from our destination when the motor started running rough. I again check the gauges which showed that the water temp had continued to rise but was still about a line width away from the red line. All the other gauges remained unchanged from before. I drove the last 20 yards or so and parked the vehicle but left the engine running.
Once coming to a complete stop, I noticed that the engine idled rough, so I again checked the gauges and the water temp was still below the red line and all other gauges remained unchanged. After about 2 minutes at idle the temp returned to normal and the idle seemed to improve, however, there was now a knocking sound in the engine.
The dealer agreed to try to diagnose the problem and asked me to authorize the diagnostic work and related fees, which I did. I took the vehicle to the Dodge dealer and they indicated that the vehicle need a new engine but could not tell me what they used to determine this except because there is an aftermarket product on the vehicles engine that could allow the vehicle to operate outside of specs, the warrant was denied. When I read through the warranty book, it indicates that aftermarket products can be installed on the vehicle which may allow the vehicle to operate out of manufacture specs. It also says that the aftermarket product needs to be shown to have caused the vehicle malfunction for Chrysler to deny the warranty.
No such documentation was provided. So, I went back and asked for this and none could be provided, in fact the service manager told me then that because the aftermarket product made the vehicle generate more smoke at the exhaust pipe, the warranty had been denied because of emissions equip modifications. My understanding is that a 2005 Dodge one ton Diesel pickup has very little if any emissions equip?
So, I was told by the dealer that I had to contact Chrysler for resolution. I contact Chrysler and they told me to go back to the dealer to discuss the problem. So I then took the vehicle to another dealer in the area to get a vehicle second opinion and they also said the engine should be replaced but felt is should be covered by the warranty. They submitted the warranty claim and it was denied by Chrysler because a hold had been put on the vehicle VIN # indicating that no warranty claim is valid because of a "Banks Kit". Apparently the first dealer had sent the diagnosis to the District Manager and that person put the note on the VIN. The Fremont dealer tried to contact the District Manger to discuss but received no response. I have since found out that the dealers do not have phone numbers to the District Managers and their only contact is email?

I have 2004 Dodge Durango. When I bought the vehicle new, I was so pleased to finally have a new vehicle that I thought would be dependable. There are too many horror stories to share, problems with shifting, speedometer not working, unable to get the vehicle out of park, etc., so I will stick with the ongoing problem with our brakes. At 27,000 miles, I took my Durango in for a checkup and the dealer said I needed brakes. I had them replace my brakes and paid $410.57 for a brake job. They turned my rotors although they did not tell me they were going to do that specific work.
At around 34,000 miles, I noticed that my car started to shake again. At 37,000 miles when it felt like the wheels were falling off, I took the car to Power Dodge to find out the problem. They told me at 37,000 miles that there was excessive run out at front and read rotors and said I had to have my rotors turned again. I told the dealer I just had the brakes done 10,000 miles ago and they said there is no warranty for brakes because it's been two years since the brake job. I paid another $390 to Power Dodge and they again did my brakes.
Nine months later, I have a car with 44,000 miles on it that I'm afraid to drive. It again shudders badly when I put the brakes on and Dodge's answer is to replace the rotors for $900. Since my last brake job, I have driven 7,000 miles and need new rotors. So let's do the math. At 27,000, I paid $410; at 37,000, I paid $390 and now at 44,000 miles, I'm told it will cost $900 to be able to stop my vehicle. So for $1800, I get to drive 17,000 miles. I only have 44,000 on my vehicle total.
I have a Honda with 80,000 plus miles on it which is newer than the Dodge and have not replaced the rotors. My Toyota truck with 180,000 miles on it has had the rotors turned once. Think there is a problem? Alas, I'm stuck with a thirty plus (closer to 40) thousand dollar lemon. It looks beautiful though sitting in my driveway.

I was very excited by the fact that I was getting 17.5 to 18.5 mpg on a regular basis (difference due to wind and/or speed). I drove the truck to the south west last Oct., it averaged 18.3 mpg, round trip. Immediately upon returning home, the mileage dropped down to 16 mpg.
I took it in and was told that it needed an air filter, which was replaced. The mileage continued to worsen. I took it back in to be checked out and was told nothing was wrong, however, the mileage continued to drop. I took it back a third time with same results and continuing drop in mpg. It's currently getting 14.2 on a good day. Nothing has changed that I can see except that it seems to keep running cooler (according to heat gauge). It started with about the width of the gauge needle below the mid-point of the gauge. It is now three widths of the needle below the mid-point of the gauge. No change even on 100 degree plus days.
The second problem is with the brakes. The lights and alarms keep going off. There is no system to how when or why they go off. I have had them checked out by Briggs mechanics, however, have been told that they can't find anything. There has to be something. There also has to be a reason that the mpg has dropped. I have put gas supplement to clean the injectors with the gas each time I fill up. Not sure of what the consequences could be if the brakes fail. The drop in gas mileage potentially is costing me $1200-1500/year. If mileage doesn't get worse or more, I have to trade vehicles. I'm not looking for money, I am looking for solutions rather than trade vehicles/brands. I hope you can provide a solution.

I have a Dodge truck. It was purchased in 2004 and has somewhere around 47,000 miles on it. Maintenance was performed as per Dodge specs and by Dodge staff. Since November of last year, the truck has been misfiring without warning and stalling upon decelerating. I have taken it back to Chrysler on 4 or 5 occasions to be repaired, the last date was in May. They have replaced the plugs and wires, the wiring harness, the heads on one side 2 times and on the other side 1 time, and cleaned out the heads - to no avail. Each time I got the truck back, after driving for 800-900 miles, the problem would start back up again.
It is really dangerous to have 4 cylinders in 1 head cease working while towing a trailer, which has happened; or while decelerating to get onto a merging highway. In any event, an email went to Chrysler about these issues and they opened a work ticket for me, which was generous of them. The problem is that each time I took the truck back, Chrysler stated they repaired the problem and off I went only to return for more repairs. This last repair, they informed me that they believe my truck is fixed (they replaced an intake manifold). I asked for them to put in writing that the problem of it stalling and misfiring has been repaired and my truck is again safe for me to drive. Chrysler will not issue such a letter and as such my truck is still in their shop.
The reason they won't is more than likely due to a service bulletin they issued in both 2005 and 2007 for the above items, even stating there may be occasions where the problem will not go away, but since there is no loss of life, they will close the bulletin out. I have followed blogs, even the NTSBA where dozens of frustrated Dodge 1500 quad cab owners are experiencing the same problem, but the manufacturer will not stand behind their service teams nor their product and are allowing the unsuspecting customer to drive around in a potentially lethal vehicle.
Is there any way I can get Chrysler to pay attention to this problem? I can send you the hundreds of truck owners experiencing this same problem, but there is no assistance. It is really disheartening when you realize that the US citizen owns a piece of this company. So far no accidents, but not ever knowing when 4 cylinders will cease working or if the truck stalls, it puts me and my family in jeopardy every time we drive it.

There was a recall on Dodge Durango 2000 engines but I called and they said my VIN# shows that it wasn't part of my truck. The same thing happened to my Durango; it wasn't getting enough cooking into the engine so the engine blew up. I took it to a shop over in Kansas and it took the shop almost four months to replace it with a used engine. Then the day I picked my truck up, it was making a loud noise and the shop said they'd find me another one and they keep playing games and won't give my money or another engine. I spent $1600 on the used engine, then $500 on the shop to put it in plus more parts they said I needed. They keep telling me they'll call me back but never do. I can't drive my truck. It won't get around. Also, my check gauge is always on and the engine light. Can you please help?

I have 2 children and don't want to feel unsafe with them in my vehicle. I don't have hundreds of dollars to take it to a dealer nor do I trust them 100%. Many of them find "something" wrong and it's usually not what you're asking about or need. Anyway I take good care of my truck. I would just like to know if there was any recall about this. My truck has also been stalling out when I start it up - not on the road.
I have been researching this problem and I am going to replace the speed sensor. I did see that was another problem with other models. I am nervous about taking my truck to the beach this year due to these problems. I purchased a new 2000 Dodge Durango in 2000. First thing that went within 6 months was the power window, passenger side. It has never worked right since. For the next 6 years, I didn't drive very much; however, I maintained it with oil changes and services as indicated by the manual when I did drive it. Next were the upper ball joints. Those were about $1,000, then the brakes and rotors. What are they making these vehicles out of?
Then, last month (May 2010), I was driving along the freeway and, all of a sudden, the oil pressure went straight to zero. I pulled over and checked the oil; it was okay. I proceeded home about 5 miles away, when at the last mile, the engine started knocking excessively. I called for a tow. My mechanic said I "spun a bearing", and I now need a new engine to the tune of $4,000.
Based on the historical performance of these Chrysler engines as I have been reading about, it's no wonder it failed. It sounds like it was only a matter of time. The thing has little value now, but I am without a vehicle. Total miles on bad engine were 106,000. That's a disgrace to Chrysler and their workers. They should be ashamed of the lack of quality they put out during those years. Count me in for a class action lawsuit.

I have a Dodge Durango 2004. I have taken good care of the vehicle as per the owner's manual and changed oil every 6,000 miles. Actually, we changed it usually between 4400 and 5400 miles it seems but never over 6000 or six months. One day last summer (2009), the engine suddenly made weird noises. I was not due for an oil change but went to get one anyway. It didn't help. It kept making noise so I planned to take it to the dealership for a check. The next morning while taking the kids to school, the engine blew up on the freeway or seized, whatever the term is. I had it towed to the dealership where we bought the truck and a full bumper to bumper warranty. My wife meanwhile (just so you know when it rains it pours) is battling a new diagnosis of a very bad form of uterine cancer that has spread to her bladder.
The dealership called that afternoon and the first thing they said is, "What on earth did you do to this truck?" Yes, the tone was snotty and accused me right off the bat. Of course, I told them that we did all of our maintenance and I told him that I had a record for him, even showing what the mileage was and when changed and where. He said that we had to have all of the receipts. How many of you all actually kept every single oil change receipt before you had a problem like this? I have asked over fifty friends the same question and the answer was what I thought, about ten percent actually kept the records (so they said). The rest of them admitted they probably didn't have a single one.
Anyway, so I had the fortunate experience of having one of the quick change oil places I went to very regularly went out of business as they built some new restaurants and shopping in their old location. I also had purchased a bunch of oil and Fram filters from a possible future client that owned a garage/parts shop on the Oregon Coast, who sold me a bunch of oil and filters for what he said was a good deal. All the normal stuff, Fram filters and Havoline mm oil, 5/30. My son was taking a car care class at school and we decided to start doing the maintenance ourselves. Long story short, I never ended up selling a system to that guy and he ended up closing his shop down so I had no idea how to find him or if he would even be able to help me!
I have spent the past ten months flying to California twice in order to get to my own boxed records (I did have a couple of receipts it turns out) that I had just shipped to my parents for storage a month or so before the engine failed. I also had to hunt down the one pit stop I had gone to that I was missing a record for and I did end up finding the private garage shop owner and he agreed to give me access into his storage unit and to search for what I needed. Thank goodness, this guy followed rules for his business and he had kept the last seven years of receipts. It took four trips to finally find what I was looking for but when I did, it was like hitting the jackpot!
I am on my way down to the dealership today with a letter of request and some printed out documentation on the oil sludge problem and what I believe now to be the problem, information about how Dodge royally screwed up by suggesting oil changes every 6,000 miles or every six months right in their owner's manual and building the engines so small and with such a shallow oil quart capacity. This most definitely is what caused the problem with my truck, so far as I can tell. I have copies of every single oil change now. So let's see what Lithia of Eugene does with it. I will post a response here and let you all know.

In April of 2009 I was driving my 2004 Dodge Durango with a 5.7 liter Hemi engine. I was driving approximately 45 miles per hour when all of a sudden I had no power. The engine just died without warning. I had the car towed to the nearest Dodge dealership. When they pulled out the motor, they found that the rod went through the oil pan, thus draining out all of the oil and the engine was seized. They replaced the engine and I received the car back. April 23, 2010 my wife is driving the car and the exact same thing happens to her. There are no warning lights, no noises or smells. You just all of a sudden have no power and you have to get to the side of the road. My car was towed again to the same Dodge dealership. Now they want me to pay for the labor because the engine is 400 miles over the warranty.
My concern is not paying half of the labor, but I don't even want this car back because this engine is unsafe. By putting in a new or rebuilt 5.7 liter Hemi, they are giving me another defective engine. This will no doubt happen again. I don't want my wife and children in a car that could all of a sudden go dead. Maybe there won't be anywhere to pull off the road the next time. Someone driving behind you will hit you because they will not realize you are no longer moving.
I feel that I should just be given the book value for this car so that I can go out and buy something else even though I'm still losing out on this deal. I paid $30,000.00 for this car. I drove it for 5 years until the first incident. Then I drove it for one more year until the second engine incident. Now I will probably get less than half that amount to go buy something elsewhere I will have car payments again. All because Chrysler refuses to admit that their product is defective. If you don't do anything else, please investigate this because someone will be killed if it's not rectified. I think I should be compensated in some way, but I don't want that car back. It's not safe and I don't want anyone else to get it either. Thank you.

In my near 60 years, I have previously owned new vehicles, and never needed all the stated required repairs and maintenance, that I have desperately needed (according to Derrick Dodge). I am very insulted with all the money I have had to spend.
It was not enough to have regular maintenance, such as oil changes, filter changes, tire rotations, etc, and to follow the maintenance manual, but each year, the demands for work needing to be done on my truck increased. I am very stressed as a result of this. Each time I went to the dealership, I suffered from anxiety, knowing that I was going to be facing a dire need for $1,000.00 worth of work needed on my vehicle, that definitely needed to be considered, or face the tragic outcomes, at least according to the dealership.
Due to this treatment I will not consider purchasing another Dodge vehicle, as I was either sold a lemon truck, having to spend all that I have, or have been brutally coerced into expenses, that have been way beyond my means, which has created great stress for me. You have lost a customer, and created much anxiety and stress for her in the process.

I was told at the end of the day that my engine has ceased. I got a second opinion and it was confirmed that the engine was gone. I spent hours of research trying to find a replacement engine, got prices from $2000.00 up to $7000.00. I found a company out in Michigan, which was aware of the problem. They told me that they have been rebuilding 4.7 liter engines all day long. The company explained to me that Dodge had made a mistake. Dodge had put the wrong size screen by the oil pan, restricting the flow of oil and causing oil sludge buildup.
The rebuilt engine that I purchased has had the problem corrected ($3.00 part). This whole process cost me $3500.00 out of pocket, hours of research and 3 months of a family limited to one vehicle. Not to mention, an engine problem of this magnitude going 60 miles per hour on the highway. At the very least, Dodge needs to own up to this problem and compensate their customers for their defective engines. No recall has been made on the original parts in spite of their more numerous breakage.
I called the customer service number provided by the dealer and spoke to someone out of the US. They admitted that much, but refused to provide additional information as to their company. Since the truck was out of warranty, they refused to make any adjustment for the defective original parts. This is my first Dodge product. Prior to this, I have driven several Chevy 1/2 ton trucks to over 150,000 miles and never needed to replace any of the steering and suspension parts. It seems that the heavier duty parts that should have come on the 3/4 ton truck should not have come apart this soon. I have tried repeatedly to contact someone who works directly for Dodge and have been unable to locate a number or address for them. Towing and repair costs was $893.44.

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango Sport and have been the only owner. The power windows fall without warning and have been replaced twice. Driver side and back passenger. I was told the regulator was bad, not the motor. Of course the part only comes as a complete unit! Now 18 months after the driver's window was replaced, it happened again! Also the check engine light comes on repeatedly and no one can find anything wrong. I have been told "it must be the gas cap, replace it." I have now 3 times and for some reason this works for a while.

I purchased a 2004 Dodge Durango brand new. It has had severe electrical problems, which I was assured were fixed while it was still under warranty. I assume the problem relates to some of the electrical recalls. It began with the engine starting and not registering any electricity, so I would have to start it again. In the past and more recently, while driving at 65 mph on the interstate, all electrical components (including gauges, dials, and power steering) shut off and I am forced to coast to stop on the shoulder of the interstate with little control of the vehicle. I have to restart it several times while stopped before the electricity comes back.
In addition, recently I had my car serviced at Branhaven Jeep dealership in Branford, CT for an oil change and tire rotation. They offered a complementary car wash which I accepted. After service, I inspected my car and found a bubble underneath the paint on my left rear side fender. I immediately had Chris (the service manager) look at it to which he replied, "The paint is out of warranty". He denied any wrongdoing and even after inspecting the bubble with him and showing him that water bubbled out upon pressure on the bubble. I was treated very rudely by him and the customer assistant representative, Jessica **. There is no doubt these are factory defects, the result of negligent service and/or production.

We own 3 Dodge Ram 3500 Duallys. All 3 trucks have had problems with the particulate filter, causing two trucks to have cracks in the catalytic converter and one truck just after only 1300 miles clogging and causing the truck to be repaired. There is a severe emissions problem with these trucks. This is the Dodge diesel model.

My wife's 2002 Durango with 90,000 miles began giving her trouble when she was steering it. Steering at one point almost failed - she had to struggle to keep control. It turned out that the Durango needed a new rack, new rods, a new steering pump and new hoses - parts and labor came to $1,724. It hurts to pay for repairs, but we are lucky nobody was hurt in a potential accident. The repairs cost $1,724.00. Work is still ongoing as our repair person needs to replace a bad steering pump he was given - we will not pay for that. We were lucky that we caught the problem - there was no physical damage.

I started my two week vacation on July 30, 2009 (still on it at this writing). I am the owner of a Dodge Durango SLT plus equipped with a 5.9 liter V8. It had 82,000 miles on it and had been given once over by 2 mechanics at two different automotive shops. According to them, everything "looked" to be in good mechanical condition, regular maintenance and regular oil changes were performed as required. I was the one and only owner from day one. We left on the 30th from Tallahassee, Florida en route to Cleveland, Ohio, Niagara Falls, New York and then to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and back home.
Just outside of Columbus, Ohio at mile marker 160 on the 71 north, I heard a loud "pop". Quickly checking my gauges, I noted that the engine was running at normal operating temperature and oil pressure was normal. Suddenly, the console lights started blinking and I lost all power. I moved the vehicle to the shoulder of the road to check out the problem when I noticed that black smoke rolling out of the front left of the vehicle. My 2002 Durango was on fire and we were 1,100 miles from home. No rhyme or reason, just burst into flames while traveling on the freeway. The Durango was engulfed in flames in no time, however, we managed to pull most of our personal items out of it before it got too bad.

I purchased a used 2000 Dodge Durango in February 2009. While driving my Durango, it began to overheat all of a sudden. Looking at auto forums and recall websites, I see not only do I have this all of a sudden overheating problem so do many, many, many people. I think this is a safety matter of Dodge and they should do some kind of free testing for Dodge Durango owners. Once the problem is found, replace for free or some kind of discount of at least 25% off. These are the things us Dodge Durango owners have to pay for in order to try and fix the overheating problem: replace thermostat, replace radiator, replace water pump, replace radiator cap, replace radiator hoses - upper and lower, replace bypass hose, flush radiator, sensor, relays, water pump, fan clutch. Living in an economy where money is the problem. After all these replacement parts, some people still can't find out why it's overheating. Something needs to be done and it starts at the Dodge manufacturers.

Electrical problem: gauges and warning lights work randomly. They go on and off. The dealership has put it on the monitor a number of times at $75 and cannot fix this problem. The owner has told me if it is an electrical problem on a Dodge PU, it cannot be fixed. PU has 160,000 miles on it. I am finding a number of other Dodge PU owners with similar problems. The Dodge dealer will not trade back for this PU due to this problem without a serous discount on the trade-in value.

I have a 2007 Dodge 2500 Cummins Diesel that has been in the shop since May 10th, 2009. The truck had a lot of blow-by, and a loss of power. I am a self-employed young man that is on foot, if you know what I mean. I am very patient, but this is past ridiculous. No one seems to know anything about it when I call up there. The only thing I have heard from the 2 phone calls in 2 months, is that the regional mgr. has to make a warranty decision. I know Dodge is going through tough times right now, but so am I without a truck. Please let me know something soon! Thanks.

I recently took my truck in for an inspection and was told that it needed both upper and lower ball joints. This did not come as a surprise because for several months, I knew something was going on with the front end. However, what does surprise me is that this truck has never been driven off road and has been well taken care of. So, I would like some answers as to why this happened. The dealership that I purchased my truck from closed a few months after purchasing my truck (brand new). I was reading about earlier models being recalled but not the 2005's and was wondering why. This is going to be very costly for me and I feel that it is a manufacturer's problem, not mine. Please let me know if I have any remedies in this. Thanks!
