It's important to stay up to date on recalls. All too often, consumers don't learn of a recall until it's too late, according to a recent investigation by Consumers Union. So check back here often, or subscribe to our free newsletter for a weekly update of important recalls.

Recalls of most consumer products are handled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a small federal agency that has fared poorly during the Bush Administration. GOP appointees to the commission tend to be less than enthusiastic about imposing fines and regulations on businesses, even when the safety of children and taxpayers is at stake.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration handles automotive recalls, including infant seats.
