    For 2024 I e-filed my taxes on 10/15/2025 at 4 pm but my return was rejected later that day. I then filed my returns on paper within the 10-day IRS grace period. I received a letter from the IRS stating my returns were filed late so I reached out to H&R Block to retrieve timestamped documentation that I had attempted to e-file the returns on time. I have just been informed by Brisa at H&R Block that they have no time stamps on e-file in the desktop version of their software and that if the IRS does not accept your return and you are using H&R Block you do not get the 10-day grace period. This is a significant flaw in the H&R Block software that exposes every customer to potential unwarranted penalties and interest. I have used H&R Block for 20 years and had no idea of this flaw until last year.

    “Professional” My CPA didn’t update me for 12 days and didn’t respond, until the deadline day. Officially telling me she will not do my Taxes. I missed Tax day because of H&R Block, now I will have to pay late fee penalties.

    I sent a message to the agent and never received a message back, not only that the message I did get back was an AI message. They could only get me 400 back my husband filed our taxes and got over 2000 back for us. I would not recommend by any means!!!

    I have never written a review (Bad) before but the outright display of ignorance, incomitance encountered with my tax filing (H&R) needs to be exposed; I requested a examination of filing married/jointly vs married filing individual and was told I could not do that unless we had been divorced for at least six months, I questioned the agent and was assured that was correct. After reviewing the IRS website regarding this question; it absolutely is an option. So I returned to the same office and requested to speak with the "In-charge" person. During my conversation explaining the FACTS she accused me of not knowing what I was talking about and had bad info. I realized at this point dealing with her was a waste of time, and then to put the "Cherry" on top of this horrible experience they add all these $ add-ons to your billing....NEVER again H&R Block!

    I have had to use H&R block since my dad died just because their stuff is already in the system but I absolutely hate it!!!!! The communication is poor!!! They constantly get rejected and their guidance is very minimal. You end up with tax penalties. Its online system is awful!!! Do not waste your time. Use TAX ACT. So much more user friendly and never have I ever had my taxes rejected. H&R block gets rejected for stupid reasons and lack clarity!! Do not use them.

    For 3 years I have been telling H&R Block support that the macOS version is broken. Many others have complained in various online forums about the same issues. They clearly do not understand the macOS security model, as the built-in online updater fails every single time. I have to manually download and install each update as they come out. This is also the case for the state module in the Deluxe+State Edition.

    Printing on macOS is also broken. To be able to print a return scaled properly for 81/2X11 printer paper, I have to delete all printers from the system, print to a PDF file, re-install my printers and then print the PDF. I had to find this out on a Reddit forum, their technical support was useless. The actual interview process and preparing the return works very well, at least for me (Federal + California) once I have all the updates installed. They simply don't seem to care about fixing the problems, as too many people have noted these issues and yet still they remain. I may switch to another software next year. My Mac is an M4 MacBook Pro with a stock HP LaserJet 1320 connected over the network, so its not liking I'm using an old computer or OS version.

    I chose a tax prep with a lot of experience and the choice was confirmed. When I showed up, I was told the person has been out for two weeks and was not expected back. I was offered another prep person and since I was there, I chose to use him. While he was doing my taxes, he had to ask for help 4 times. When the forms were complete, I found a $6000 mistake. I pointed this out and the corrected amount I owed was $45. A few days later, I was completing my tax due and found I was not given all the paperwork I needed and had to return to the office to get them.

    The tax person who did my taxes was NOT and account and had no clue what he was doing. He was googling stuff. He was entering numbers out of nowhere and when I asked him where did this number come from, he deleted it. I had to tell him that certain stuff didn't change from last year and he can use my taxes from last year to refer to if he doesn't know what to do.

    Overcharged me for the service (like 3 times more than any other office for a simple tax filing for a single person) and when I asked him why this amount, he said that they charge by document. He failed to answer how much is it per document and said he is not sure. When compared my taxes to the past 2 years, I found many things missing that they should always be there. Ex: the interest I paid on my mortgaged house. I had to refer to Google to check some stuff that was missing and found that I can be in trouble with IRS if I didn't include them. They were on my taxes every year but not this year. I made the office know what happened and asked them to have an expert look into the missing info and correct it before the deadline but all they do is apologize.

    The federal portion of the program works fine. The state portion is trash if you have anything but the simplest of returns. The AI is also garbage. I asked it a question about state solar taxes and it asked me if the children (presumably my solar panels) had social security numbers. I contacted the actual customer support who then referred me to the IRS and told me I must have input something wrong. Turns out I input it correctly, their software had an error in it. But they just didn't care enough to acknowledge that possibility never mind correct it.

    The other day I contacted customer service to see if they could answer my question on why my refund was stuck at IRS accepting it status. I gave him what information he requested and after being on hold for a few minutes he answered me. The answer was that my refund would be completed by April 9 and I felt this was great since it was accepted February 25. Only to find out this information was misleading. So far no refund and now I now I can’t even get ahold of customer service. I would have rather him tell me he had no answer.

    I had my taxes done at the Liberty TX office. One of the employees had misplaced her phone as I arrived. She eventually found it in her purse. As I was at the front of the office the women tax preparers got into a loud argument about the phone. They were loudly using vulgar language!! Those are the most unprofessional bunch of employees that I have ever encountered!!

    New software DOESN'T WORK IF YOU USED HEALTHCARE.GOV MARKETPLACE! Don't buy it, it won't let you file your return. Support blames their bug on Healthcare.gov. Useless.

    Next year I will no longer be using H&R Block. This company is mechanical and has lost all touch with servicing the client! Time is money! $600.00 to complete taxes, ridiculous and offensive!! Robotic accounts! Clients need to take some courses in accounting and control their own financial future. H&R Block literally block your future finances they serve themselves!

    After going through my docs, I get sticker shock. This company obviously knew what the costs were before I started. Why did they wait until all docs were entered before they hit me with an over-priced sticker cost. Tell me up front instead! There won’t be a next time, but I wish I walked out instead.

    Wendy ** is extremely rude and unprofessional. I had my taxes filed on 2/23/26 at the Catoctin Office in Leesburg Virginia. The tax preparer is Wendy ** at that office. She was supposed to file a form which she had forgotten to do when she filed my taxes. I've been asking her for over a month to please file that form and it took 3 emails to even get her to respond and her response was that she had to figure out the "new" system. Then a week went by and another 3 emails and then her excuse was that she had some March 15th deadlines that she had to work on first. Now another 3 emails later she is not responding and ignoring me. She has yet to give me the real reason for not doing it but nevertheless she is being not only rude but unprofessional.

    I utilized the Premium online version for tax year 2025 and I am dissatisfied with the following:
    1. It failed to provide me with the opportunity to indicate how I could get my refund by direct deposit.
    2. It repeatedly made my sign in difficult by continually stating that the software did not recognize my device—very frustrating.

    3. I could not accurately and fully list all of my intended cash contributions/deductions, this is the most frustrating/disappointing factor.

    One can say that I could consult with a tax support person, but I was especially disappointed with interacting with the software for this tax season, having successfully handled—on my own-- with the prior 6 years of utilizing H&R Block for those tax years, makes me want to utilize another company’s tax software in the future. I really think that I deserve a price adjustment for my troubles.

    H&R block is too expensive, they will tell you $199 then charge you $254. Me being 65 can find a better solution to getting my taxes done without the high cost. Not using them anymore.

    I'll start by saying we have used them multiple times. Nothing changes much. This year they quoted us $465 to do our taxes and then at the end it was $700.00. They literally plug in numbers and then raised the rate 50% in the time we started vs ended. They are dishonest and they may have gotten us this year but there are far too many options out there to be misguided and manipulated again. Do yourself and your wallet a favor and find a more trustworthy and respectable business or CPA to use. Because they are not even close to worth what they charge.

    I found an error on my taxes after they were filed by H&R Block office in Waverly. The error was totally the fault of the tax "professional" and his trainer. They amended my taxes but refused to reimburse me for monies I had to pay back into the IRS, because I did not purchase their "peace of mind" offer. After some doing, they did refund me the $370 I paid them for filing my taxes. Most of the tax filers are lacking knowledge of State and Federal tax laws. The filing fees they charge are rediculous and then when THEY make a mistake on filing your taxes, they refuse to own up to the full IRS penalty you incurred. Don't allow them to file your taxes.

    When it was time to pay they raised the quote to twice the original quote (their website specifically says they do not do that) so I told them I would let them know if I decide to still file at the new price. When my husband went back to get our W2 back they told him they would give them back after we paid. I sent my husband back and he told them it is illegal (because it is) to keep our W2s since they belong to us legally and that if they want us to file with them they need to honor the original quote. They gave the forms back but refused to honor the original quote. I just filed on FreeTaxUSA and they got us more money back because they included our college forms which H and R Block didn't and I only paid a small fee ($28) to avoid tax audit. Definitely would not use an organization who tries to use illegal action to force you to pay their high fees.

    Software being reviewed: 2025 PC version of Premium + State. I had quite a few issues with this application.

    1) I was having an issue with my internet connection such that the application could not get the State module. Best I could tell, after scouring the website, I could only download Updates directly. In my opinion, if I purchased a State module, I should be able to directly download the main install for that. I spent a couple of days trying to figure out the issue, with the website being useless in that regard. Ultimately, I had to turn off the firewall in order for the application to get the State module. Oddly enough, the application had no trouble doing the e-file with the firewall active, so I am baffled as to why it could not get the State module with the firewall active. Additionally, I did not have this issue with the 2024 module and nothing on my computer setup has changed.

    2) While working through the issue of getting the State module, I spent a lot of time on the H&R Block website and found that there is extremely little help for technical issues with the PC software version. Rather than providing specific information about how the software is accessing the website, which might have helped me tweak my security settings, it simply says to turn off the anti-virus software and/or your firewall if you are having any issue. Being an IT person, I know just how dangerous it is to have the PC security off, even for a very short time.

    3) After logging in to the website, I could not even find a place where I could download the main application software that I had purchased. I had to go back to the email that contained a link to it.

    I had used TaxAct for many years in the past and had they not changed to only doing Cloud taxes, I would have reverted to that software immediately. As it is, I will be checking out other tax software companies next year. I will not use H&R Block again. The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is that the Federal part of the program did a fairly decent job of walking me through the process of getting my 1040 figured out and filed.

    Updated on 03/25/2026: Got my taxes done today... Customer service from the time I opened the door to the building was excellent. Tax expert guy did a great job explaining everything that he did. Aside from the weekly reminders and a problem with it, I would have given them 5 stars.

    Original review: This is my second year with them...a week before appointment I started getting an email daily with appointment time and date and to download my tax info - are they for real? By the end of the week, I received an email with the wrong time on my appointment...called office and had to get rescheduled with the time I originally requested. Monday of the next week, got an email saying my appointment is tomorrow - keep in mind I just called office to confirm on Friday for my appointment on Wednesday but the email said tomorrow - Tuesday. I am so anxious to get my taxes done so I won't have to deal with these emails any longer.

    I will never again use Taxcut! Can't get any help out of customer service or tech support. Have uninstalled and reinstalled the software twice because every time I try to file it tells me I need to update before filing, I update then I get the message "1 is not valid. enter letters only". So I can no longer access my return. Repeated calls and chat attempts have not solved the problem.

    I have used the H&R Block Deluxe taxpayer software for many years and it has been my go-to product. However, this year, I had to file a 5329 form. The interview process was great, but the form did not transmit with the 1040 efiling and my return was rejected. Researching, I found that the 5329 form lines 54a and 54b (which were correct) were not populating line 55. Line 55 then populates form 1040. After online chat (useless) and then speaking to a customer service person who had a child yelling in the background, I finally got another person who understood the issue but had no resolution other than to override the fields. The agent wanted my SSN to open a ticket on the problem. I overrode line 55 and Form 1040 automatically populated correctly. Now I have to file on paper which means a longer wait time for my refund. I am saddened by the poor programming of the lesser used forms.

    Purchased the deluxe version last year because they said it could handle business depreciation. They neglected to say that while you could fill out the form you could not electronically file it for this version. This year I upgraded to the Premium version so I could e-file. Now we are less than a month till tax day and I cannot e-file. This time it is because they have a known problem with the QBI carry forward. They say I need to wait for a future update but cannot provide a date for the update. These guys are completely incompetent.

    We had a terrible experience. My wife requested a tax return for an estate, and the preparer used that information to prepare a personal tax return for her. The personal tax return was inappropriate as it didn't include all of her income, her tax credits or deductions, because we did not want it filed. They total screwed it up, and did not ask any questions to ensure that the return was appropriate. She didn't even ask if the filing status was appropriate. She just assumed, and insisted that my wife pay for her useless personal return.

    At this point, I don't have much confidence in the other return, given that the nice lady doesn't ask any questions. How could I possibly recommend someone who doesn't ask questions? We paid $270 for the trust tax return and $220 for the totally useless personal form. I have no confidence in either return. We will have to amend the personal form at our expense. The trust tax return requires a filing in Arkansas as well, but the H&R block agent never bothered to ask any questions about the trust. They just assume, and do what they please. We would have been better off with tax software, because it actually checks for inconsistencies and asks relevant questions. We're out almost $500, and we'll likely have to have the returns redone elsewhere. Thanks a lot H&R Block.

    Form 8949 does not print correctly. Entered 19 sales. Then in forms view, there are two copies of this form. The first has 14 transactions while the second has 5, for a total of 19. Problem is IRS Form 8949 only has 11 lines. When printed, two copies are printed but the first copy is missing the last three items (recall the form only has 11 lines). The second copy has the last 5. Contacted help 3 times, the last admitted it's a known issue, but still has not been fixed. Looks like Turbotax time!

    Used them last year, we had always done taxes ourselves via turbo tax. While they gave us an upfront cost by the time it was done it was over triple that. Not only got less back but their fees ate up what we did receive. Used an independent person this year. Got more back and charged me less than the original agreed price from H&R Block.

    I purchased tax software from H&R after checking with them that I would be able to import my TurboTax info from a previous year. They advertise that this can be done. Upon downloading the software I found it could not be done and confirmed this with a call to customer service. Logic would dictate that a refund was due to me. Unfortunately I was told that they would not refund the money. This program is a total waste of money.!! I then purchased TurboTax again and will never switch back. H&R is a total scam. Stay away from it.

    The tax preparer was highly professional, but he overcharged me 200% as I found out from other tax calculating services. I was there last year as well, but didn't realize how much it should cost. This year I became smarter but after the fact. I will never come back.
