Hyundai - Air Bags

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

On 1/5/2012, I was in an accident in my 2003 Hyundai Elantra. A car ran the stop sign and pulled out in front of me and I slammed on my brakes but could not stop in time so I t-boned them going about 40mph dead center. The airbags did not deploy. I had severe whiplash and now have constant back pain. I am so mad that the airbags did not deploy. I contacted Hyundai about this and they wanted all this information from me: service records and everything but the kitchen sink. Yes, I had the maintenance done on my vehicle either by my husband or a mechanic, and no, my airbags were never removed. Maybe Hyundai forgot to put the airbags in the vehicles that have so many issues of them not deploying.

I have had several trips to Hyundai for the airbag light staying lit all the time. They said that there was a problem with the sensors under the driver's seat and fixed it. The problem continued, and after the third time, Hyundai said they could not cover it under warranty. Then a recall letter was sent to me, and I had it fixed at no charge.

Last week, I was in an accident and totaled the car. I hit someone going at least 40mph, if not more, and the airbags still did not deploy. Nobody was hurt. One of the selling points the dealership used was the safety ratings and the airbags. What a joke.

What happened was that my son was in a serious accident and the airbags never deployed. Thank God, he didn't get hurt bad but I think there is an explanation for that. I called the dealer Lia Hyundai of Hartford and they didn't have a fair explanation and I want to know why they didn't work. The car was totaled due to the accident.

My air bag light came on Thursday, 2/16/2012. I took the car to the dealer to find out if it was a fuse or something. They tell me I must replace the air bag for $1800.00 for the light to go off. Are you kidding me? Seriously? I know there must be a recall on the airbag (2005 Sonata). I'm not the only one. Does anyone know of a recall for that year? I'm being stumped.

I was in an accident where I was hit in the front. The airbags never explored. I thought they were to explore with any impact over 10 miles an hour. The impact pushed the grill up to the engine and totaled my car. Why it did not explode?

My first experience was when I received the recall notice for my 2006 Sonata about the airbags sensor for front passenger seat. I had Sports Durst in Durham check it when I took it in for service (been a while back) and was told nothing was wrong. Later, when someone over 90 lbs was sitting in seat, the airbag light would indicate that it was turned off. I took it to Crenshaw Hyundai in Burlington where they checked it.

They confirmed it was faulty and mailed my seat to California for service. Now, my airbag light is back on again and was told by Crenshaw Hyundai that since it had been repaired, the recall work is no longer under warranty. It seems after reading all these complaints that it would not do any good to have it repaired because the majority says the light comes back on or the airbags failed to deploy in accidents or just deployed for no reason. I use to like Hyundai's but after this I will never own another one nor recommend them.

I was in an auto accident on 01-09-2012 in a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. It was a front end collision and my car was totaled. My air bags did not deploy and the claims adjustor and a certified mechanic said with the impact they should have. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy and have a port catheter in the right side of my chest. Upon impact I hit the steering wheel causing painful bruising to the chest, especially where the port is located. I had a dye test and they found a blood clot around the port. I have consulted an attorney and would like a response from you as soon as possible.

Last night on 1-20-12 at 2330, I crashed on ice. The front end slammed into a metal pole that holds up the street lights. The impact was dead center of the front of car, which is where the front driver airbag sensor is. My airbag did not deploy. I own a 2010 Hyundai Accent.

I have a Hyundai Elantra 2006. The air bag light came on without a reason, and when I checked with Hyundai maintenance in Jordan, they said that we should replace the airbag computer and now its broken! It got broken without a reason! This will cost me $750! They can't reset a light or a computer?

I have a 2007 Sonata. The airbag light has come on 3 times. One of those times, the passenger seat had to be removed in order to be fixed. It was under recall. This last time, I'm told it is the driver side seat belt. When it came on I was under 60,000. My mechanic thought it came on because he had disconnected the battery and he reset it. Four days later, it came on again, right after I went over 60,000 miles and was no longer under warranty. The dealer did not have the part in stock and could not get me in to service it right away. I was leaving in 2 days to make a long drive, which is 6000 miles total.

Since the purchase of 2006 Sonata, I have had to have seat belts, seat, sensors for air bags repaired due to air bag light staying on. This car has been repaired for air bag light six times under warranty and now will cost $325 for the same parts originally replaced. Average miles between repairs of air bag is less than 1 every 6,000. Once, there was less than 200 miles between fixes.

Dealer states repair not covered under extended warranty. Awaiting call from Hyundai CS. If not covered, I will probably have to do without air bag system working because they obviously have a defective system and cost is too high to repair every 6,000 miles

My airbag warning light comes on all the time. 3 times I took it to Roseville, Hyundai, first they said the sensor was set to high. The second time they said a screw was loose. The third time they said a wire was loose; now the light goes off and on. I contacted Hyundai customer service. All they said was my car was no longer under warranty and that I needed to bring my car in for its regular service.

My airbag in my 2004 Sonata didn't work. In the accident, I don't understand why the airbag didn't deploy, only the bag from the seat and was not even half-full. The car was totally wrecked, but not from the front at all. Somebody hit me on the front side of the car in the driver's side. I woke up in the hospital with the news that my air bag was not working. I'm concerned about this. How we can do something about it?

I have a 2010 Hyundai genesis in the USA and my son had an accident resulting in a total los, and the airbags, none of then deployed resulting with physical injuries. Hyundai must recall these units. We are in the process to establish a legal action. In the USA, Hyundai airbags does not work. Be aware.

I was in a side and front end collision and my left side airbag went off but my driver air bag did not after trying to avoid a head-on collision with a dodge truck. After the truck hit my left side, I ended up going through a wire fence and hit a steel pole and a cedar tree before my car stopped. After all that no steering wheel airbag. This on 11/14/11 at 6 a.m. I'm feeling pain and I'm not happy at this point.

I brought my Hyundai 2003 xg350 being the second owner. I really like the car but the air bag light stays on all the time. I took it to the O'Brien dealer in Fort Myers for repair where I was charge $99.00. The moment I drove about a mile or more, the light came back on. I went back and was told it would cost me over $1,000.00 to get the seat out for them to find the sensor. I believe that's a manufacturer's defect. They should recall those cars or fix the problem. I was charge for a problem but did not get any solution.

I had a frontal collision accident with my Hyundai i20 model 2010, which resulted in a total loss to the car. The air bag failed to open and I had severe hit in my face from the steering wheel. I complained to the Hyundai dealer in Jerusalem but they refused to check the air bag system.

I have a 2007 Santa Fe. My airbag light came on. I took it to dealer, they told me that it was in the steering wheel and it would cost me $399.99 to get it fixed. Mind you I have 70k on my vehicle but I did buy their extended warranty which I was told at the time of the purchase would cover anything that my original warranty would not. That was a lie. It did not. What I do not understand, if it is in the steering wheel, then why is this not covered. To me that is a manufacturing defect. That is not something, that is on the outside. This is "in" the steering wheel.

I took my 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, 61,000 miles, in to the Dave Edwards Hyundai because the airbag sensor light was on. They told me that there was no recall on this (even though Hyundai corporate told me that there was). They told me that the seat belt buckle was the problem, and it cost me $500 to fix it. After 2-3 days, the light came back on. This time they told me that the technician didn't reset the module. After less than a week, the light came back on again.

I have a Hyundai i20 Sportz CRDI 2011 model. I just met an accident. I hit a post and my car flew for about 15 meters and landed in a pit. My car landed on its radiator, but the airbag didn't open. When I asked the dealer, he said that the impact was not on the sensing limit of the sensor. Please, tell me the sensing limit of the airbag. What should I do?

My 2005 Hyundai XG350L air bag light stayed on within a year of purchasing the vehicle. Every time I took it back to the dealer, they always say that they "fixed" it but it would come back on a few weeks later. Sounds like they were just resetting the indicator light. Since I'm now out of warranty, Ettleson Hyundai wants $2000 to "fix it" again.

I have a 2007 Hyundai Elantra and my air bag light has been on for about a year. I had it fixed a year ago and it came back on about three weeks later.

I went to the dealer for the recall. They completed the recalls on the connector cover and ACU programming and the light is still on! The dealer recommended I replace the front passenger seatbelt buckle, which I did and the light is still on!

I suggest everyone on this site take five minutes and report your issues to the government at www.nhtsa.gov or call 1-888-327-4236. This is the only way we will get a recall to have this problem fixed. Obviously, the recalls out there aren't fixing the problem so please call and file a complaint.

2006 Hyundai Sonata: air bags no longer work; light's on; and dealer's service department says this is not covered under 100k warranty. I have 70k miles. This is a safety issue and Hyundai says it's not covered! I am reading this particular issue over and over on websites! It is very poor that there is no warranty on this issue.

Several hundred dollars is needed out of my pocket to repair it. I can't afford it. So, in case of an accident, too bad! And yes, the passenger air bag had to be repaired couple of years ago. Now, neither work (according to the system).

We have owned a 2003 Hyundai XG350 since new. It now has less than 30,000 miles on it and we recently noticed that the airbag light was on and it needs an inspection sticker. We were told that the airbag issue would have to be repaired before the car would pass inspection. The service manager (Frank) told us that he has seen several of these problems in the XGs and that to repair it properly, it would require a new wiring harness for around $500. I commented to him that this sounds like an engineering defect on Hyundai's part, and that they should repair this at their cost. Hyundai refused.

I was in a head-on collision in my 2004 Hyundai Elantra. I had my seat belt on, and I was the driver. My air bag light came on, but my air bag did not release. I suffered a great amount of pain, because my knees hit the steering wheel very hard.

My wife's 2006 Sonato airbag light went off. We took it in and the dealer stated the seatbelt connector was defected.

Even though we had an extended warranty, my wife had to pay to have it fixed. Just about a year after, the airbag light went off again and now the dealership will not cover its parts. The dealership said the part is now out of warranty and we would have to re-buy the belt. The belt works fine, but the light will not go off.

I purchased a 2005 Hyundai XG350 from the dealer. The airbag light came on shortly after I go the car. The car has been back to the dealer approximately 15 times for service as the light comes back on shortly after every repair. While the dealer has done everything they know how to do, Hyundai will not acknowledge a widespread problem the airbag systems in this car.

I also have a Hyundai that has the air bag light. 2005 XG350L. I paid good money for a car. It turned out all Hyundai have a history of air bag failures and light that doesn't go out. While under warranty I took many times to get this fixed. The light was never out for more than a few weeks. They always told me the same thing: don't move the seat and don't put anything under it. Basically, Hyundai has a known problem that has not been reported to the government as is their legal responsibility. It's time to file a class action lawsuit to force them to admit they have failed to deliver a safe product to consumers. After warranty expired, they refused to fix the known ongoing problem that is built in to Hyundai unless it was paid for out of pocket.

My airbag in my 2011 Elantra didn't work, totalled car. In the accident, I don't understand why the airbag didn't deploy. I rear ended someone going 30 miles per hour & nothing! Again, car was totalled.

We have a 2005 XG 350L Hyundai that we purchased for our teenage son. The air bag light came on 4 months ago. We paid to have the code cleared out, two months ago (March), the light came on again. We paid $95.00 to the Hyundai dealership in Savannah, GA to clear the codes. And now the air bag lights on again. We called back to the Hyundai dealership and they are telling us we need to bring it in again. I don't understand why must we continue to pay to have the codes cleared on this again. The service department informed us that the air bags are not functioning if the light is on. What can we do to get this fixed once and for all?

The airbag didn't deploy on our 2003 Hyundai Sonata when my wife had a front end collision.

My 2008 Elantra was in park when the airbags deployed on me. I suffered minor whiplash. When I contacted Customer Relations at Hyundai Canada's head office, Lina rudely said that they would need to investigate before they would fix my car under warranty (still 2 years left). The end result was that my car's "black box" indicated that there was an impact that caused the airbags to deploy. My car was in park when they deployed, there were 3 witnesses who can attest to that and there was no physical damage to my car (no dents or scratches and I have photos to prove it). Lina disregarded anything I had to say, including the part about the physical evidence to back up her findings. She showed no concern for my injuries, simply stating that " it is what the computer is telling us and that is our policy".

3 months after buying my car from the dealership, my gas pedal failed to work while driving on the highway. The "computer" said everything was fine, but when the owner of the dealership drove my car and couldn't get past 20km/hr, it was obvious that it was not fine. Lina acted as if she didn't hear any of that and that computers themselves don't malfunction. I am particularly concerned as there are similarities between my incident and the reason for the recalls of the same car in the US. However, Hyundai Canada is showing no concern for people's safety. I wrote Chad **, the company's PR manager an email and hope to get a response back.

In the meantime, I am going to continue fighting to get what I am entitled. Hyundai is avoiding the obvious signs that will contradict their findings. What is worse is that they just don't care. I am tired of having these large car companies (Toyota, most recently) play with people's safety because it is cost-effective for them to do so. I am inviting Hyundai Canada to set themselves apart from the others, take ownership and provide the services their customers are entitled to and show a real concern for the safety of their drivers. As a side note: Have you noticed that their own employees don't even drive Hyundai vehicles? I suppose they know that the safety of their life is not worth the risk of driving one of their own.

Wow, this is so outrageous and unbelievable. This problem go on and on and can't anything be done about it? Something needs to give.

I owned a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. On my way to work on July 07,2010 going into a curve, I hit a tree. I don't know what happened. I felt the impact and when I looked up the tree was in the center of my car. The weather was good. I was not speeding and my focus was the road and getting to work. The speed limit was 40mph on that stretch and maybe a little less than that is the speed I hit the tree. I was alone. Thank God and my car was equipped with (8) air bags. The motor was literally pushed to the inside of the car.

When I looked up, I could see the tree and the entire view of my windshield. I remembered looking down at the steering wheel and I saw four corners of white cloth. The cover was still on the horn. Air bags didn't come to mine and I didn't give it a second thought at the time. I had the desire to lay down and that is what I wanted to do. I took off my seat belt and opened the car door to get out. I managed to get my left foot on the ground but I couldn't get my right foot out. A lady had stopped and told me help was on the way and that I couldn't get out of the car. I insist I needed to lay down. She told me to push the seat back and I said it was stuck. I heard sirens and a mans voice who freed my foot and off to the Shock Trauma Hospital I went.

The damage was internal injuries that caused me to loose a portion of my small intestine, a portion of my colon and my spleen was damaged but that wasn't noticed until day 2, when they found out I still had internal bleeding. So instead of them opening me back up again, they did a microscopic percedure to block my spleen off. I had a (6) inch laceration on the inside of my right knee where the bone stuck out, a hair fracture on my right elbow and broke my right ankle in (4) places. The doctors said the seatbelt saved my life and if the air bags in my car had deployed, my injuries wouldn't have been as severe. I was just cms away from having to wear a bag for the rest of my life. It took (42) staples to close up my stomach, (15) stitches for my knee and I have (2) plates, (7) rods and (11) screws in my foot.

I know I probably would have had injuries if my air bag would have done it's job, but I don't beleive my injuries would have been as bad. Four months later, I am still carrying a pocket of bruised tissue on my left side the size of a brick and a bruise in my right breast the size of a half dollar. I'm still under Dr. care and out of work on disability. What do I have to show for all of this, a lot of pictures and a bunch of scars. I did get a lawyer, but while I was in the hospital, the insurance got control of the car and sold it. Therefore, I have no evidence and no case. That itself is so screwed because Gap have not settled yet and I'm still making car payments. I need to know if I have a case with just my pictures as evidence. Now, I read about a recall on Hyundai Sonata 2009-2010 to fix steering column and recall for air bag failure. I was never notified.

The Airbag light went on so that I cannot get an inspection sticker. I took my car to Hyundai of Nahua, NH 3 weeks ago; they said the sensor needed to be replaced and they ordered the part. They still don't have the part; I cannot get an inspection sticker without it; last day to drive the car is tomorrow. The part needs to be shipped from whatever Hyundai parts dept. I can't get it so I can't drive my car! I cannot drive my car after tomorrow unless I have an inspection sticker! Why does a 2 year old car have a problem with the airbag sensor?

On December 21, 2009 I was driving my mother's 2001 Hyundai Elantra when I was T-boned by a van. The car was totaled by the insurance company; the side airbag failed to deploy. Last month my mother received a "second" notice from Hyundai that there was a recall for airbag defect. She did not receive a "first" notice or it would have been rectified. I suffered whiplash and a concussion. Seven months later, I am still in physical therapy and cognitive rehab has been prescribed.

I have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra with 82,000 miles. It has a 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty on it. I have my oil changed and inspected every 3000 miles. On my way to work, the car dies. I have it towed to Dean Lambkin Hyundia. They say the engine needs to be replaced but the warranty doesn't cover it. What's the point of having a powertrain warranty if they won't honor it? I now have to pay for a new engine.

My son rear ended an individual at 35 mph and totaled my 2005 car. The airbags never went off. So I had someone look at them and there was even an airbag in the driver's side. None of the four airbags even went off. Son hit his mouth on the steering wheel and has whiplash and hurt his back.

I was involved in a wreck on May 5, 2010. I drive a 2010 Hyndai Elantra and the car has 6,000 miles. A truck pulled out in front of me, I was doing 40 mph and hit the passengers side of the truck. I was very upset because the whole front of the car is totaled. And no airbags ever deployed. I now have neck and shoulder damage. Not to mention that I do not feel safe in my car.

The airbag light in our 1004 Hyundai XG350 began to remain lit beyond the self-test period. We took the car in and the attendant reset the airbag light. He stated he did not know if the airbag would function properly unless they did further testing at the cost of $400 plus. After reading the NHTSA report on Hyundai airbag malfunctions, we are at a loss on whether further testing would improve our safety. Please advise of any recalls or further leads regarding Hyundai airbag malfunction especially in regards to the XG350. Thank you.

In Sept '09, the Accent I bought my son was totaled to the scale the entire body frame collapsed inward. The engine was forced back into its cabinet. The Hyundai hired expert stated to me that the frame of the car did what it was supposed to do. He showed me were the airbag censor was and it was in the exact area that had taken the direct hit of the accident. However, according to Hyundai the car was perfect although the airbag did not deploy, the seat belt did not hold my son back. Both allowed my son to break the sun visor with his face hit the steering wheel with his abdomen and slid forward in the seat to slam his knees under the dashboard.

I am explaining this for one reason. Do I have a reason to fight against Hyundai's claim that there was nothing wrong with the car that could have cost my son his life? Should he have not pulled down the visor just before impact? All emergency response personnel that responded to the accident made reference to the fact that viewing the extent of damage to the car the airbags and seat belts had failed to protect my son.

The manager of the dealerships, where the car was purchased, car care department stated that he too agreed with the responders statements that the airbags and seat belts had failed. Please if you can offer some direction, I would appreciate it. I have communicated with Hyundai and in their last letter to me in January was their response was final and nothing more would be discussed on the matter. Thank you for any assistance you can offer me.

Due to the accident and failure of the airbags and seat belts, my son now deals with a hesitation in his driving ability and that of whom ever is driving with him along. With the failure of the airbags and seat belt, my son broke the lowered sun visor to break his collision with the front windshield. As I stated in the request for help, all first responders to the accident asked if the driver/passengers were already transported to the hospital, due to the visible amount of damage to the front end of the car and the amount of blood around the front driver side seat and along the door.

When they interviewed my son about the accident, he explained the early morning sun had caught his eyes and while lowering the visor, he collided with the back end of a stationary full size truck. When I spoke to the first responders, I was told that the Accent's airbags and seat belts had failed to protect my son and that I should consider the injuries that my son had received a blessing because they all felt that he could have very well lost his life. If not, being left with more bodily and facial damage. I have contacted Hyundai and been told that even after their contracted inspector showed me where the airbag sensor was located, which was in the direct area of the collision, that the airbags and seat belts did not fail and that it was their final word in the matter.

My 19-year old son now suffers from back problems due to flying forward in the seat, knee issues due to him moving forward in the seat and stopping with his knees underneath the dashboard, and a permanent scar to the right side of his face. To have been told by Hyundai that it didn't accept any responsibility for the lack of response by its vehicle was a true bash to the value I placed in its car when I purchased it brand new from the dealership.

Seatbelt and airbag safety system spontaneously failed. The manufacturer is legally responsible but won't make the repairs unless I pay for it. The front driver and passenger seatbelts failed without warning. I heard a loud bang noise and the seatbelts tightened up on both front passengers. I noticed an odor after the event from the explosives in the seatbelts and now the seatbelts are locked and will not extend or retract and the air bag warning light is illuminated. I understand this safety feature was meant to deploy in the event of an accident, but it deployed spontaneously without an accident.

There were no noticeable events that led up to the failure. Hyundai had a recall on the air bag sensor control module in Oct. 2008 (Recall ID# 80141 & 80132). I had them install the new wiring harness and clips to prevent a spontaneous failure Jan. 2009. I took my 2001 Hyundai Elantra in to Lee Hyundai Inc. to diagnose the failure on 12/09/2009. I was told I needed to replace the two front seat belts and air bag control module. I filed a complaint with Consumer Affairs division of Hyundai Motor America. The telephone number is (800) 633-5151 (800) 633-5151 Case # 3785972. I contacted Hyundai Consumer Affairs 3 times and the dealer 3 times about this complaint. I was told I would have to pay to have the vehicle repaired.

The reasons they gave was the vehicle was out of warrantee, I was the 5th owner, and the car has too many miles (96,387 miles). I explained that this is not a warrantee issue. I explained to both companies that since this is a safety related defect the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says they are required by law to make the repairs at their expense. They still refused. I filed a complaint with the Office of Defects Investigation at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration online. Confirmation number (ODI Number) is: 10295146 http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm this office states that "If a safety-related defect exists in a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment, the manufacturer must provide a remedy at no cost to the owner." I was charged $79.95 for the diagnostic, and was given an estimate of $1,525.26 to have the work done. After I advised both Lee Hyundai Inc. and Hyundai Motor America of their legal responsibility, they would still not refund the diagnostic fee and still would not repair my vehicle. I complained to the State Attorney General's office. They contacted both Lee Hyundai and Hyundai Moters America. Surprise they still would not fix my car. Lee Hyundai did offer me a 10% discount on the work.

I have lost the use of my car because the seatbelts are locked in place, and the airbag will not deploy since the module failed. Also, I was not able to use my car to drive home for Christmas because of the failure.

My daughters 2007 Hyundai elanta had the air bag light come on and she was taking it to the dealer for another recall on the brake pedal switch. They told her that liquid had gotten on the connector for the air in the wiring harness and shorted out. No fuse blew and she was told the car had no operatable air bag and that it may catch fire. This is the same type of problem on the 2001 and 20002 models. there was also another elantra at the dealer with the same problem. I contacted Progressive insurance and they would not cover the repair under the comprehensive policy. All state covered the repairs of the other vehicle at the dealer with the same problem. We were told that the wiring harness would be 1607.95 if replaced. I told them to go ahead with the repair.

They then called and said that the wiring harness under hte dash board was also affected and would have to be replaced. Total bill for the job now is 2946.80. I paid the bill , contacted BBB auto line who denied the claim saying that it was not a defect that caused the problem. Your Joe benton wrotw about this problem in March, July and Oct of 08. I have the 2 wiring harnesses and the only thing wrong is a small connector block that could have been replaced. There was no covering on the connector that sits directly under the cup holder on the center console. The cover was supposed to be a fix on the original recall. The repair took 20 days since parts were not available for a 2007 vehicle. I have reached a point where i am certain progressive insurance, BBB or Hyundai will cover any of the costs so the little guy gets beat again. Thanks for listening.

My airbag light and check engine light have been on and off for the last year. I took it to the dealership and of coarse the check engine light wasn't on. But i paid the $130 to have them hook it up to the computer or (diagnostic machine). They told me that the sensors under the passenger seat is doesn't work. And it cost $1300 to fix. Who can afford that.

So i drive around with the check engine light on. And both seatbelt light lit up. It is embarrassing but i cant afford to fix it. Oh i almost for got. My a/c compressor quit and i paid $430 to fix it. It works buts sounds [bad]. Just riding around in a car that is sounding like a clunker.

I took my 2007 Hyundai Sante Fe in for service. My air bag light kept coming on, and I had a squeak in my back left passenger window. Something that should have been coverered under the warranty, and I was told I'd have to pay for it, because supposedly the door panel had been tampered with.

When I went in to pick up my car, I had Mandy show me what she meant by tampering. She told me there were pinholes in the door when they remove the door panel, and upon taking the door panel off, the technician told her that there were tool marks inside and that I had obviously tampered with the door. I explained that in two years, I've NEVER taken off the door panel and why would I be so stupid to do so if it was going to void the warranty? I got into a rather heated argument with Mandy, then I spoke with the the station manager, and got no where, except that he told me he's split the difference with me.

Well, to this day I've never seen my half of the difference, as I paid it in full. Then I was told I'd have to talk with Mark Stillwagon, Service Director, who was on vacation that week. So I did finally speak with him, and after a week of emails with him, he and the Hyundai Rep (whoever that may be)decided that it was my fault and that Hyundai was not responsible for the repairs that cost me $161.00. I pretty much told him that this wouldn't be the last he heard from me, because the way I see it, they sold me a defective vehicle and why is it my fault? There is no way that myself or anyone I know messed with the door panel, and I find it very offensive that they would pretty much call me a liar, without calling me a liar.

Bottom line is that they sold me a defective vehicle and something that should have been fixed by them or under the warranty, has now cost me out of pocket money. In my line of work, the customer is always right, and you do whatever you can to make them happy.

At this point, I would never take my vehicle back to them for anything, and I'd never buy another vehicle from that dealership. This is the second vehicle I've purchased from them, and I certainly don't deserve the treatment I received. For being professional, neither Mark or Mandy handled this very well. I want some kind of an apology from them, which I've never received either, and I want my money back. The dealership should take responsibility for their products, as I can't imagine they'd want the bad publicity over $161.00.

I was involved in 3 car collision, while driving 1999 Hyundai Sonata. The car aws hit by two cars on driver & passenger sides in front, damaging, Hood, fenders, bumper, reinforcement bar, head lights on both side, and is almost totaled. I am hurt badly on my back & shoulders & have pain in neck & back, but none of my cars 4 airbags were deployed. I have contacted the Hyundai company, but I don't expect any outcome unless I contact a lawyer as seen from other cases on this website.

2006 Sonata passenger air bag sensor continues to stay lit even after restarting the car, or when we hit a bumpy road. Hyundai rep refuses to address the issue despite videotape. Car is devalued, cannot sell it to others due to air bag issue. Unsafe to use with anyone under 150 lbs in passenger seat.

Bought a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. Passenger side airbag does not register me. I am 5'3" 105 pounds. Took to both dealers and they state their is nothing they can do about. Tell me to restart car and sit perfect. DO that and it still does not work. So basically sit like a statue even when your driving on long trips? I told one dealership Hyundai has a huge lawsuit coming when someone dies for airbag not deploying. Currently awaiting for a part for drivers side airbag because right now that is not working either!

Also my steering wheel makes a screechy electronic noise and both dealerships state its a characteristic of the car? All this and the car was bought brand new back in March 2009. Oh yeah the tires were all flat on the bottom but i did not have a problem getting them to replace them.

What I dont understand is why Hyundai recalled the Elantras for airbag problems but refuse to do so for the Santa Fe after all the complaints? Are they waiting for someone to die first because of their stupidity?

air bag light stays on

My wife was driving toward an intersection when a F-250 Ford pickup came out of an alley way on her left, striking the drivers door of our 2009 Sonata, pushing the door & door pillar about a foot into the drivers sest at chest level totaling our car, (car had 5000 miles on it), no air bags deployed, the roof, rear door & quarter panel were also damaged. Hyundai said air bags worked properly?

My wife has 8 broken ribs, had a collapsed lung, back & neck pain, two days in ICU, and one week in the hospital, was home eight weeks before she could go back to work part time, our medical insurance was used up in the emergency room, we have'nt received all the medical bills yet but am told will be in the hundred thousand range.

I am having trouble getting the airbag issue resolved with a Hyundai Sonata. They are stating that my wife has to sit in a specific way in order for the air bag to operate properly. This sounds like a ploy. I do not have this problem with other cars. Just this one.Why can they not fix the problem.

Numerous trips to the dealership and then they need to show them it does not work. I travel and my wife works during the day. We are not always able to try to prove this problem exists.

2004 Hyundai Santa Fe - Airbag light kept coming on - Had it to the dealer 4 times before the problem was diagnosed as fault wiring. Dealer got the light to go out, but told me if the light comes back on, they will need to replace the entire passenger side airbag. Cannot tell me whether the airbag will deploy in an accident or not, and said that Hyundai will not tell them. Today, the vehicle is in to have a bulb replaced behind the heater control.

Was told it is not a bulb after all but, once again, faulty wiring. This vehicle has had every recommended service since the day it was purchased. Faulty wiring should not be an issue. This sounds to me like a factory problem that should not be my problem. I see there are many other people who have had these same problems. Why is something not being done to help the consumer?

Passenger Air Bag senor failure. Air bag light would come on when the passenger would shift their weight in the seat. notified the dealer. Took car in, no problem notice. Problem still present. Took in second time, no problem found. Probelem still present. Third time returned to dealer, factory rep was there, found problem, said could not be fixed. No attemp was made to fix.

I was offered that I purchase another car model, they picked out. I would have to pay the difference of sticker price or they would buy my car back with a charge on mileage used. Mileage I put on the car while driving an unsafe car waiting on a solution. They referred to the Lemon Law which they used to save money on a major problem.

Air Bag light on drivers side issues as decribed as in the Sonata's. Hyundai non responsive. Telling us we don't sit right? Not enough weight etc. This problem is intermitant and now I want to know if safty is an issue.

I own a 2006 Hyundai Elantra which I was in a car accient. I was hit on the driver's door. The door came in about a foot, and the driver side side airbag failed to deploy. Hyundai is saying that it work like it was supposed. Which I do not understand. I have like 50 pictures which show that the driver side door and the passager door pushed into the car about a foot. Even the roof it pushed in. The pillar which houses the side impact sensor is clearly struck and pushed into the driver seat. If you need the pictures or would like them let me know. Thanks

I had 2 crack ribs, bruise lung, and a grade 2 cut on my spleen. I was in the ICU for 2 days and then moved to a regular room for 2 days.

I was in a small low impact collision. I rearended a truck and his trailer hitch left an indent on my front bumper. This caused my passenger side air bag on my 2003 hyundai tiburon to deploy. There was no one in my vechile at the time and when I went to the dealership, they stated it went off as a percaution in case someone was sittin in the seat. I questioned there response and they said it did it's job as there was an impact. First, the impact occured after being at a stop sign, I was waiting to turn right behind the truck and he started to go so I put my car in neutral and rolled fowarded, whent he truck stopped as another car proceed to come over the hill at a high rate, I didn't notice him stop as I was looking to see if I could go behind him. I do not think there was a speed even registering on my car. I have been to a mechanic and a repair shop who are both completely amazed that the airbag went off.

I own a 2004 Hyundai Elantra. While making a left turn from a stop, my car was hit on the driver's side; the driver's door was the center of impact. The driver's side airbag did not deploy, yet the car was totaled.

The driver suffered a concussion and traumatic cataracts in both eyes; he has had two operations, and it looks like at least one more is to follow. I wrote to Hyundai, they sent an inspector to inspect the car. The conclusion was the airbag operated according to its design. So I guess what Hyundai is saying is that the airbag was designed to never deploy. I mean, the car was totaled by an impact directly to the driver's door. What they are getting away with is criminal!! My insurance shouldn't have to cover the medical expenses, Hyundai should!

I am writing to alert you to the unacceptable resolution? for an ongoing problem I have had with my 2001 Hyundai Sonata and to request repair/replacement of my drivers seat under the original manufacturers warranty.

My Sonata was part of the Recall ID # 02V105000 - AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW OR Recall ID # 01V347000 - AIR BAGS recall in 2001/2002. My automobile was serviced on 9/3/2002. The notation on the enclosed copy of the service paperwork indicates that the Recall 051 work was completed (Side A/Bag Kit B).

Since that initial recall, I have had now ten incidences where my air bag light has illuminated (see History detail below and on enclosed copies of service records). This happens because the connector for the air bag is under the drivers seat, I am told. Apparently, when we move the seat to accommodate drivers of varying heights, the connector jiggles loose, and the light illuminates.

While I have only paid for this repair once (1/24/08), the dealer told me on October 6, 2008 that if the light illuminates again, I will be responsible for replacing the entire drivers seat to permanently repair the problem at an estimated $2,100.

On October 12, 2008, I sent a letter to Hyundai Motors, Inc (the manufacturer), Southern States Imports, Inc in Raleigh, NC (the dealer) and copied the NC Attorney General about this matter. In the letter, I requested that Hyundai recognize this as a manufacturers defect and/or part of a 2002 recall that has not yet been resolved satisfactorily. I requested that the drivers seat be replaced by Hyundai to correct the problem once and for all.

On November 4, 2008, I received a phone call at 11:50 a.m. EST from a customer service representative at Hyundai Motors named Sarah. Sarah informed me that she was calling about my letter dated October 12, and instructed me that if I should experience any more trouble with my air bag light, that I should immediately call her and let her know. Sarah then gave me a case number for reference.

On December 13, 2008, the air bag light illuminated again after my husband drove my car. This was only the third time he had moved the drivers seat since the repair work conducted on the air bag light connector on October 6, 2008.

Let me be clear about one thing: my husband and I had planned that I be the only driver of this car from October 6th on until we could get the car sold or traded, because it was clear that if we moved the seat again, the connector would fail, the light would illuminate, and wed be in for an expensive repair.

However, after the November 4th call from Sarah at Hyundai, we felt confident that Hyundai would address the problem should it occur again.

After the air bag light illuminated again on December 13th, I phoned Hyundai on December 22nd as instructed.

First, I was unable to dial the extension I had been given to call from the 800 number Sarah provided to me. Instead, I had to go through myriad menus to finally get to a customer service manager, Teresa.

I informed Teresa that I was calling in reference to case number. Teresa was unable to find my case in the computer system using the case number. She then pulled my records up by my vehicle identification number, and proceeded to ask me how many miles were on my car. Once I told her that it had 129,000 plus miles on it, she explained that Hyundai would not be repairing my car because it is now out of warranty.

I explained to Teresa that Sarah with Hyundai had called and given me a case number. I explained that this issue had been going on for years, beginning and continuing when the car was under warranty (6 of the 9 times it was repaired), and that Sarahs call led me to believe that Hyundai would in some way intercede on my behalf and assist the next time I had issues with this ongoing faulty air bag connector.

Teresa then said, Oh, we give those case numbers out because we have to,? and, it doesnt mean you are going to get assistance when you call in.?

Need I say I am appalled? I would have traded this car in immediately had I believed that the phone call I received from Hyundai in November was a ruse.

Unfortunately, I hung up from my November call with Hyundai Motors confident that Hyundai was going to take ownership of what is clearly a manufacturers defect and repair the air bag connector once and for all. Now I am to understand that since the car is out of warranty, despite the fact that this air bag connector has been faulty since 2002 and was recognized in a recall from Hyundai Motors in 2002, that I am now responsible for repairing this to the tune of $2,100!

The way I see it, I now own a vehicle that is unsafe for me to drive, un-salable, and effectively worthless. And Hyundai takes no responsibility for this.

I am hopeful that this letter will serve to facilitate resolution of this matter at once in a manner that is fair to me, the consumer, and reflects Hyundais commitment to providing Americas Best Warranty.? Or shall I be forced to Rethink Hyundai? and never, ever purchase another one?

I own a 1999 Hyundai Accent.Port Arthur,Tx. On Oct.25,2008. I was traveling on 9th Ave.When a F150 Truck traveling on 7th street and the corner of 9th aveune ran the stop sign. Which hit the front driver side that proceed to rip the bumper off, bust the radiator, and mashed the hood up to the windsheild. The inpact of the collision at the rate of his speed did't depoly the airbags in my car.

Myself and two nieces were injured.I was the driver.I sustained chest, neck, back and left hip and knee injuires. Front passenger receive chest, neck, back. My niece in the back seat suffer with neck, stomach and lower back and left leg was jammed under the front passenger seat.

The air bag warning light is on. I have had the dealer fix in the past but about 6 months later the light is on again. Can't seem to get the light to be permanently off.

When light is on, at least one of the airbags will no deploy.

i own a 2003 hyundai tiburon, i was ready to go to my job, my car was parked and as i normally do i started my car an suddenly i heard a ....boom.... my airbag deployed with no reason, i never hit anything , my car did not move.... and now the insurance wont cover, the repairs will cost me over a 1,000 dollars, which by the way i dont have, my premium probably increase i dont feel safe in my car anymore. the only thing i did was file a complaint with the nhtsa.gov

i was a passenger in a 97 hyundai sonata in 05. the driver was charged with following too close he rear ended a vehicle low impact only damage was right front fender and headlight. driver unhurt. both bags deployed mine was defective. injuries head trauma teeth knocked out lost half of the vision in my right eye and close to being deaf in left ear. if that wasn't enough i had my right hand my dominant hand blown off. airbags are make specific and hyundai refuses to part with their formulation

My daughter was involved in a car accidnet, the car was totaled. The entire front of the vehicle was damaged, and the passenger back and damaged to both sides of the car. She was on an interstate where the speed limit was 70 mph. We are lucky that we did not lose her. I contacted Hyundai two days later to ask about the non-deflating airbags, they took my name, number, the number where the vehicle was taken and I was told that they would have someone go and inspect the vehicle. I purchased these vehicles for my daughters going off to college, most importantly because they talked up their safety features(all of the air bags) and that was my concern for them being so far away from home.

INitially I wanted them to inspect this vehicle, and figure out what was wrong so that this would not happened to anyone else. Instead I received a package that contained a book about air bag operation, which I already had one and a check list of items that I needed to send to them, none of which had anything to do with the fact that these airbags did not operate properly. What does my purchase agreement/bill of sale, repair/maintenance invoices/pictures, that I must take, and documents reflecting payments to my insurance company have to do with anything?

I contacted Hyundai, for the third time today 09/04/2008 and was given the run around, and told that there are no other cases at this time. She was looking them up and didn't see anything. So imagine how shocked I was to see (google) that I am not the only person who has had this problem. We also had clutch problem with two of the vehicles.

Involved in 50mph car accident. Front airbags did not inflate at all. They just popped out and smelled something burning.

My husband, two children and I were involved in an auto accident on Thursday, August 7th in our 2003 Hyundai Elantra. A lexus ran a flashing red light and we t-boned him. My husband was driving between 30-35 mph and our car was declared a total loss by our insurance company. However, none of our front or side airbags deployed. I have contacted Hyundai about this issue and they are going to have someone look at the car to determine if they failed but I know they did and I hope they will take care of it. I guess we will wait and see if they take any action.

I received a letter from Hyundai Motor America regarding a RECALL on 2006, 2007, 2008 Sonata's stating the Vehicle's Passenger Air Bag Off illuminates while the right front seat is occupied by an adult. I made an appointment with Angela at Pride Hyundai and mentioned I received a letter from Hyundai for a RECALL and made an appointment for Monday (8/11/08 @ 9:00). My husband brought the car to the service department and they told him he had to supply a person of 100 lbs to resolve this problem. The letter I received doesn't state anything about bringing a person for this test. If Hyundai knows they have a problem with the passenger air bag off light they should have the equipment to TEST this problem and it should not be my problem to FIND an Adult under or about 100 lbs, and my car will be tied up for 3 days with no loaner. I'm a working parent and need a car to get to work.

Answer: Hyundai can put 100 pounds or less of weights in the passenger seat and repair the problem. The weight does not have to be a breathing person. Your dealer knows this.

I complained about the SRS air bag system on my 2002 Sonata having been in for repairs ,due to high resistence or poor connection under drivers seat. This problem has happened on and off for around four years without being solved. The last time I was charged $211.86 and eight months later I had the same problem, the dealer said the repair was warranted for only ninety days. When I complained that this was an on going problem and not a new failure he agreed to reset the code, but wouldn't repair it.They didn't charge me for this service but the next time it gave me trouble then they would deduct the repair cost of the last time it was fixed($211.86)towards the price of a new wire harness if needed. It appears the Hyundai service people don't know how to correct this condition. Also this type of failure is common with the Hyundai Sonata from what I read on the internet. The failure code always comes up as B1378 trouble under drivers side seat.My complaint to the Hyundai Company was answered, that if I didn't care for their responce of it was most likly debris under the seat causing the failure I should take them to small claims court. It looke like I never buy another Hyundai car again,I did buy three of there cars since 2002,my next car will not be theirs for sure.

Shortly after purchasing a 2006 Sonata,we noticed that while my wife was in the front passenger seat the warning light was on saying the seat was inactive. A couple of months of ownership, we notice the warning Passenger airbag not engaged we reported it to the service manager and he told us they could find nothing wrong at that time. Several times since we have been in for dealer maintenance and have complained about this condition. On our last visit around the 1st of May, we were told a recall was forthcoming and we would be notified by the middle of June. It is now the end of June and still no action has been taken.

2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS airbag light illuminated with no prior accident. Dealership stated Airbag system jus will not function. It cannot open airbag. Per SRS code, Airbag Module is no longer working. $560.00 to replace. Car is 5 years old granted, though it only has 19,500 miles on it. Warranty Module and wiring appear clean, with no obvious wiring shorts or issues. No moisture detected. No broken wires. No fluid spills from cup holders. Big safety issue. I see on your site where other owners of same car had airbag deployment for no reason. Huge safety risk. As I see, I am not the first with this issue. Hyundai should investigate, and if appropriate, replace module or problem causing agent.

In Oct 2007 My wife and I with our granddaughter were in an accident in our 2003 santa fe with a ford mustang that pulled in front of us. We were all wearing seat belts my wife was driving and my granddaughter was in the back seat. We were doing between 40 - 45 mph. We hit the mustang head on. The air bags did not deploy and subsequently I was the most severely injured.

I was unable to move after the accident. I was paralyzed from the neck down. I was treated in an ICU trama unit for 4 days. I laid in the hospital for a total of 24 days at which time I slowly had to learn to walk again and learn all the basic daily living skills. I was Diagnosed with Central Cord Syndrome. I had to undergo major neck surgery in april 2008 which now I have a cadaveur bone in my neck with a titanium plate and six screws which hold my neck togeather. I still have strenght problems along with numbness and tingling in both my arms. I'm a master carpenter by trade and have been told I will never be able to perform these duties again. Why put in air bags if you have to hit the sensors just right before they deploy? Noone plans an accident let alone most people don't even know about air bag deployment sensors. Hyundai needs to do more extensive research on their air bag systems or not offer them. Everyone I've talked with cannot believe the air bags did not deploy.

Over a year ago when I purchased my NEW BODY style Sante Fe , the PASSENGER air bag sensor turns the air bag on and off when my wife sits in the passenger seat. After we noticed this SAFETY problem, we contacted the dealer, and they tried to fix the problem, but we were told there was NOTHING they could do. The problem still persists. Recently, I have read that the Hyundai Sonatas have been recalled due to a PROBLEM with any ADULT passenger that weighs around a 100 - 120 lbs. The air bags have a faulty sensor. After reading this , last week I contacted my dealer again regarding this PROBLEM, and stated it was time they addressed the problem, and fix my air bag to function properly. I also told them that if they could not fix the car, I would like them to BUY the car back for original purchase price, or replace the car with a model of the same type that was not a hazard to drive. I was contacted by the general manager last week on friday, after talking to him , he promised to call me back today ( monday) and arrange to find a solution to fix my air bag problem. Well, there has been no contact from the dealer today, and I fear I am just getting lip service. I also stated to the dealer that in the event of accident, if the crash was of a severe nature , and if the passenger air bag did not deploy, and injury resulted due to malfunction, that we did not want to even think of the problems that could arise. It is time for HYUNDAI to quit jerking people around, as it seems to me that they have some defective sensors on the Sante Fe models also. Maybe the highway safety commission should RECALL all Sante Fe models to make sure more people are not at risk for a DEFFECTIVE product.

Was in car accident November 07. The front end of my Santa Fe was severely damaged (over $10,000 in repairs). Even front windhshield was cracked. Although I was wearing my seat belt I suffered severe chest and neck trauma. Hyundai's response was appalling. All Ms. Harvey wanted to know was "what did I want from them." When I stated I wanted them to revisit their airbag deployment policy because of my experience her response was "Oh . . . well . . . I'll pass this along." To whom she would pass this information she never said, but it was pretty evident they could have cared less.

Very disappointed in product. Will never buy a Hyundai again and don't recommend them to anyone. P.S. Interesting side-note, I live in Montgomery, Alabama, their U.S. headquarters for manufacture of Santa Fe.

Purchased a 2006 Hyundai Sonata for our daughter. Soon discovered passenger airbag light came on when she (or her mom) sat in passenger seat. Talked to dealership about resetting weight sensor down to a lower weight, and was not only told no, but the service department argued with us that an adult weighing only 120 pounds would be better off WITHOUT airbag deployment, so they saw no problem with our situation!

After contacting NHTSA, I learned the weight settings are all determined by each manufacturer, with no NHTSA control or oversight. Also learned airbag weight sensor settings are NONDISCLOSED information - found no where in the owner's manual, and the dealer doesn't have to tell the buyer (and often doesn't even seem to know). We lost quite a bit of money, quickly trading in our almost new Sonata due to this safety hazard, and Hyundai's very obvious anti-airbag attitude. Also sold off an older Elantra for very little too, just to get rid of all our unsafe Hyundai vehicles.

I had purchased a 2002 Hyundai Elantra brand new. We have had several problems with this car including the check engine light coming on all of the time and NO one oculd figure it out. That however is not the problem, my husband just total the car a few days ago and I have issues with the fact that the car has four air bags up front and not one deployed. If they believe that the sensers in the bumpers are what triggers the air bags them I am really confused since the car not only rolled over but both bumpers, trunk and front end were gone. I will never purchase another again.

No air bags deployed during a 35mph impact with an adult deer. The car suffered severe damage to the front left quarter panel, front bumper, front grill and hood. The deer was killed on impact and thrown approx. 20ft. I spoke with the General Mgr. at the dealership were the car was purchased... He was unable to answer the question Why did my airbags not deploy during this accident?. I will have to dig deeper...

My 2005 Hyundai Elantra was hit almost head on with my car being forced off the road and over an embankment. On coming car was traveling around 40 miles an hour. The air bags did not employ. Only slight injuries were experienced by driver and passenger, thank goodness.

My mother was in a hard hitting accident but her airbags did not deploy even though they should have. Now she has severe pain in her neck due to whiplash. I'd like to join or start a class action suit agaisnt Hyundai for their carelessness and ignorance towards customer safety.

Today my son was driving at 60-65 mph on the interstate in a 2005 Hyundai Elantra and slid on snow and collided with the guardrail. The front end is crumpled and the car is probably totalled. The concern is that a head on collision at 60-65 mph did not cause the airbags to inflate.

We struck a large deer traveling about sixty miles an hour and severely damaged(the grill radiator and cooling fans were crammed completely against the motor and the hood was crushed almost to the windsheild which was also broken) the front end of my 2006 hyundai elantra......None of our airbags deployed!

My husband and I were driving it was raining started to hydroplane. Spawn 180 degrees hit the guardrail with back and front bumper. We were traveling about 55 mph. neither airbag deployed.

My husband purchased our 2007 Hyundai accent this past Sept. Within a couple of days the passenger airbag off light came on while I was in the seat. We needed this car specifically to travel in with the first trip being our wedding. They took the car in right away and said nothing was wrong. They have taken it in a few more times, replaced the seat and it still malfunctioned. They told us last week that they involved more higher ups and the answer was that the seat has a 150lb threshold. At the time of the sale we were told that it was 60lbs. The manual does not state any threshold what so ever. It states that when an adult is in the seat the airbag will function. We have been very patient about this matter and now feel extremely misled and ripped off. Neither my husband or myself weigh 120 lbs. I can not ride in the back seat because of frequent car sickness. This I feel is an unacceptable solution anyway. This sale would NEVER had taken place if they had told us the threshold was 120lbs. instead of 60lbs. This morning my husband was in a minor accident (he was rear ended), thankfully there wasn't any passenger in need of an airbag but it shake me up to think of how potentially dangerous it is for either of us to be a passenger in our own car. Please let me know what steps we can or should take concerning this matter. Thank you so much, Francene & Peter Yorko

I was heading to pick up my 2 year old daughter after work today and was hit by a drunk driver nearly head on. My airbags never deployed and I believe that my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe will be totaled. I prepared myself for the airbags to deploy (at about 40 mph) and they never did. Thank goodness that I'm only a bit stiff and sore (and that my child wasn't in the car). Very concerned and upset that this vehicle wasn't a bit more safe. Why did the airbags not come out?

My wife was driving our 2004 Hyundai XG350 and was hit on the drivers front panel by a pickup truck. The truck was traveling at approximately 40mph and my wife at 5mph. The impact totaled our car and none of the airbags deployed. My wife has a broken scapula, five broken ribs, punctured lung, fractured hip, fractured pelvis nad bruised liver. If the airbags would have deployed she would not have sustained the injuries and pain that occurred!

2001 Hyundai sedan; xg300; side driver air bag deployed when door was shut! I am a 2nd owner; THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY FACTOR, that no one will address. It seems that no air bags will work when one is out of commission! Therefore this is a SAFETY MATTER; and I am not the only one this has happened too!.. All the Hyundai dealerships say the manufacturer will correct the problem.. When I call the main Hyundai trouble shooters; they tell me 2nd owner no way!

New vehicle, Hyundai Sonata, passenger air bag light does not function properly when 118 pound wife sits in passenger seat. At times the light goes out, indicating air bag is engaged, most of time light remains on, indicating air bag IS NOT engaged. Wife sits on seat in approved fashion; light goes on or off in at random times. Dealership could not repair and district representative was called in. Seat was replaced, but problem persisted. Final answer from Hydundai is car is acting within reason. Our options are 1) accept car with problems or 2) pursue Lemon Law for replacement/buy back of car.

I bought a 2007 SantaFe SE in January. In February the red air bag light came on. A couple of days later I get a call from the parts department telling me an air bag sensor came in. The service department don't offer a loaner car for me to get back to work, so I had to wait until February 23th to drop it off. (My birthday) They fixed it and all is well. Then the air bag light came back on. They ordered another sensor and put it on April 20th. Then, in May I get a call from the parts department that they had ordered a fuse box for my car. So I guess I had been driving all this time in a deadly car. I have to wait till my wife has a day off at the end of the month to take the car back in. Kinda feel bad now about selling my Hyundai survey for a detail job.

ever since i bought my hyundai santa fe 07, i have had trouble with the air bag indicator/sensor. I weight about 110 pounds and hwen i sit in the passanges seat of my car the air bag sensor doesn't work properly. even if i sit properly according to hyundai the sensor comes on and off making the car unsafe for me to ride in. When i took it to the dealer their only suggestion was for me to ride in the backseat of my own car!

This is crazy. there is a problem and it need to be recalled and corrected before i or someone else is seriously injuered due to this problem. If anyone can help me please do!

This needs to be corrected. too many other people are suffering form the same problem and hyundai needs to own up to it and correct it.

Passenger airbag unnecessarily deployed in a low impact (5-10 mph) collision.

2004 HYUNDAI TIBURON GT COLLIDED, BUMPER TO BUMPER, WITH A STOPPED PASSENGER VEHICLE AT 5-10 MPH. IMPACT WAS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AT A 40 DEGREE ANGLE TO THE VEHICLE CENTERLINE. BUMPER DAMAGE WAS MINOR AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES NOR REALISTIC POTENTIAL FOR INJURY. THE VEHICLE'S SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPLOYED THE PASSENGER FRONT AIRBAG EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO PASSENGER, PRESENTING A RISK OF INJURY TO THE VEHICLE'S OCCUPANTS.

THE DRIVER'S FRONT AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE TIBURON'S SRS COMPUTER ACTIVATED THE PASSENGER AIRBAG PREMATURELY AND WAS TOO SENSITIVE TO A MINOR, NON-THREATENING IMPACT; THAT IS, DEFECTIVE. DEFECTIVE DEVICES ARE IN MY POSSESSION. HYUNDAI OWNERS WITH A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE ARE INVITED TO JOIN A POTENTIAL CLASS ACTION BY E-MAILING CONTACT@AIRBAGCLAIMS.COM, ESTABLISHED FOR THIS PURPOSE.

Driving downhill on an icy road I was forced to brake to avoid a car coming uphill. I went into a slide and hit a telephone pole head on at 35-40 mph. The driver side seat belt did not hold, the air bag did not deploy.

My chin hit the stearing wheel and my head broke the windshield. I was lucky as I walked away uninjured.

I expect the car to be totaled by my insurance company. The bumper broke in half as it was cleaved by the pole. The hood folded up, the radiator pushed into the engine, the steering column covers popped off. My damage is economic as I now have to replace the car (not another Hyundai). I am alive and un-injured. Someone was watching over me.

I have a 2004 Hyundai Elantra car. The passenger side air bag is sometimes deactivated when my wife is in the seat. She weighs 135 pounds. I called Hyundai but they cannot correct the problem.

If i get into an accident and the air bag does not deploy my wife can be seriously injured.

My airbags deployed during a fender bender. The car was only going a couple of miles and hour, and only tapped the other car. Neither car was damaged, but my airbags deployed. The warranty manual states the airbags will only deploy in a severe collision. There was not any damage to my car and the accident WAS NOT severe. Three mechanics have checked the car and said the airbags should not have deployed (one mechanic was from Hyundai). I filed a complaint, and Hyundai claimed the airbags worked properly (of course), and said their deciosion was final. I started looking for a new dash, but every place I called said the airbags are really sensitive in the 2004 tiburon. I have seen other posts with the same situation. If you have had a problem with your airbag going off prematurely, please contact me tammit1971@comcast.net. I have contacted a few lawyers and want to start a class action lawsuit.

airbags are blown. Dash needs to be replaced.

Well how's this story.. I was driving on 95 North, slowing down in the right hand lane, probably going only 45-50 mph. I hit a pothole or something else obsence and my drivers side seat airbags (side curtain) DEPLOYED!! there was no impact to the car by any other car, no one else was involved. i stopped on the side of the highway - no one else stopped and no one else seemed to have the same issue.

my friends rescued me and one of them drove my car back 10 minutes to their store and 30 mins later the rear passenger side tire was flat. i called hyundai - they are gonna send me a packet. i called the dealer - they were rude and said they never heard such a thing. they havent seen nothing yet - this is obviously not safe!! i bought me 2003 tiburon gt brand new in '02 and mechanically it has been great - but all of these stupid recalls and dumb stuff has gone wrong with it - now this. the air bag hit me so hard that i was confused and then made a trip to the ER where i got meds and cant go back to work for the remainder of the week. what a mess!!

I had an accident with my 2002 Hyundai Elantra 2002. My tire blew out causing me to loose control of the car. I hit a parked car.

I have two fractured ribs, a cut over my eye which required five stitches. My face is black and blue as well as my neck and eyes. My front airbag deployed but my side airbag did not. I have a large hematoma on the side of my head where my head broke the driver side window.

My brother was in the front passenger seat. His side airbag deployed but there was no impact on his side.

He was not injured. I believe if my side airbag had deployed I would not have hit the side of my head on the window.

I have a 2004 Hyundai Elantra GT. I bought it new in March of 2004. From that date on, my passenger side air bag intermittently goes on and off when someone under 150lbs is sitting in the seat. There is an indicator light on the dashboard that lets you know when the airbag is NOT engaged. This light comes on randomly whenever I have friends sitting in the front seat who are lighter than 150lbs.

I've brought the car to the dealership numerous times regarding this isse, their response is always the same: "There are no sensor readings to indicate any problems. Your friends must be seated perfectly upright and in the center of the seat with their feet on the floor for the airbag to function properly." I called the district manager, Greg, regarding this issue. His solution was absolutely incredible: "We'll have the seat weight sensor adjusted down to zero so that anytime anyone is sitting in the seat the air bag will be deployed in an accident. But, you have to sign a waiver saying Hyundai is not responsible for any injuries people might endure as a result of the airbag if you get in an accident."

The air bag is supposed to be designed to detect when someone who is under 75lbs (a child) is sitting in the seat and then NOT deploy in the event of an accident. Setting this sensor down to zero could cause some serious ramifications for any children sitting in the front seat of my car. This solution from Greg/Hyundai is completely unacceptable.

The worst is this: when they had my car in last time to look over this situation, they gave me a loaner car; a 2004 Elantra. It was the same year and model as my car. And wouldn't you know it? As soon as my friend got in the car (she weighs about 140lbs), the sensor light came on indicating the air bag was NOT engaged. So, this problem is clearly not just with my car...it's a design problem! I do not want to wait around for Hyundai to figure this out as I drive around with friends in the car who aren't as safe as a.) they could be and b.) I paid for...part of the reason I purchased this car was because it had all the air bag safety. Right now, I am not getting what I paid for.

As of yet, I have never been in a car accident. I truly plan on keeping it that way. However, should the occasion arise, I would like to know that the people in my car are as safe as they possible could be. Right now, this is not the case. On the economic side of things, I paid good money for this car. Part of the selection process was the safety rating of the car. Right now, I have not gotten what I paid for.

I was driving a 2004 Tiberon, going approx 79 miles an hour (I had blacked out) -- police clocked me at that speed when I ran into the back of a truck. Airbag did not deploy. Severe whiplash due to the bag not deploying. Car was totalled.

I had an accident in my 2003 Hyundai Accent, The front was completely destroyed on the car and the air bag did not go off. My car is completely demolished and due to the accident I am still having problems with my chest and back.

On January 6, 2004 I was involved in a frontal collision while driving at a speed of approximately 35 mph in my 2003 Hyundai Elantra. My airbags did not deploy and my seat belt lock did not engage until I had flown forward approximately 6 inches, hitting my left lower leg on the underside of the dash. My other injuries include 4 herniated discs in my lower back and 2 in my neck. I am undergoing spinal fusion surgery in February 2005 as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident.

I notified Hyundai on 1/7/04 and was told they would send me a letter requesting numerous documents including police report, photos, detailed list of repairs from the body shop. I asked the person I spoke to if I needed to wait to have the repairs performed and she assured me that they could do the investigation after the car was repaired so I had it fixed as I needed a vehicle (The damage was approximately ($6000). I forwarded all of the information to them as requested and was told an investigator would look at the vehicle and determine if the system was faulty.

A few weeks later an investigator contacted me and asked me to leave the car at Hyundai on a specific day for him to do the investigation. I asked him if he had copies of the information I had sent to Hyundai and he said they did not give him anything. I had since given all of the original documents to my attorney who is handling the insurance portion of my claim but had the disc with pictures on it so I printed a set for him. He conducted his entire investigation off of the photos and no other documentation and a few weeks later I received a letter from Hyundai stating that the system worked properly because the impact was above the bumper (The bumper was broken in half and pushed into the engine compartment!)

They also said this was their final decision. I have tried to get help from the dealership (Dick Campagni's Carson City Hyundai) and have been told that they have nothing to do with it and they cannot help me with my dealing with Hyundai. My attorneys said that if my injuries were more significant (death or severely life altering injury), they would pursue a lawsuit against Hyundai, but these kind of lawsuits are too costly to handle when the manufacturers have a legal team at their dispense to ward off people who deserve a settlement of some sort for the injuries caused by the malfunctioning safety features of their vehicles.

I will never buy another Hyundai nor will I ever purchase another car from any of Dick Campagni's dealerships in Carson City, Nevada because of the lack of service after the sale. The response of the General Manager at the dealership was that I could bring the car down and trade it in for something else. I do not feel safe driving my car but I must continue to pay for an unsafe vehicle that I don't drive.

See above.

My family and I were in an accident 9-4-04 on I97 in Hancock NY. We were going 50-55 mph when a man pulled in front of us without looking. We were in a series of 3 impacts and NONE OF OUR 4 AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. Also, my shoulder strap released and I hit the steering wheel on the 3rd jolt and my son's rear shoulder strap released on the 3rd jolt. We were all lucky. We walked away with bumps and bruises....but why didn't these airbags deploy when we hit the car first then head on into a steel guardrail?

I had a new 2004 Hyundai Tiburon. It was involved in an accident where the front end was completely destroyed. the right rear quarter panel also had heavy damage. The car is equipped with four air bags. None of them deployed. Total loss of car and trips to the E.R.

I was driving a Hyundai Accent (2001) and had a frontal collision with a pick-up truck that pulled across our lane, even though the impact was strong and the front-end was significantly damaged the airbags did not deploy.

My mother, who was at the passenger side at the moment injured her foot.

My wife and son were driving in a 2002 Hyundai XG350L and were involved in a crash. All four airbags did not work and my wife's seatbelt failed to hold.

I was driving at about 30 mph and had a head on collision and my airbags did not deploy. My girlfriend dislocated her hip and I was knocked unconcious and have stitches in my eye because I cut my eye open on the steering wheel.

My daughter was in a accident where she was hit in the passenger side with a vehicle traveling approx. 40 mph. The passenger airbag did not deploy. If she would of been the passenger of the vehicle she would be in serious condition.
