My disabled daughter and I took Amtrak train to Glacier National Park. Our train on way home was cancelled. Had to find another Hotel to stay at. Next day got on train. Took whole extra day, delayed meeting adjoining train home. Had to stay in hotel a second night and then home. We sent in all what happened in more detail, all our receipts and even a letter from one of the Amtrack people. I have called and emailed several times, and they say they never received it and can't help me. I bought this insurance in case of something like this. We were 3 days late home all due to Amtrak fault, and we are not getting reimbursed at all what we are supposed to. Even after I offered to send copies of the photocopies, I had of what I sent.

Our American Airlines flight from Lafayette, La to Dallas, Tx on 12/10/2024 was delayed and our connecting flight from Dallas Tx to Burbank Ca was missed, so we were put on another AA flight and bumped down from business class to coach and rerouted to LAX. We had to take a bus and an Uber to get back home, many hours later. I called American the following day and was told we would be refunded the price difference from business to coach...but not to me. The refund would go to the credit card that booked the flight. I used a AAA travel agent to book the flight, who in turn used a different travel agency to charge the flight on their credit card. I agreed on travel insurance, because of the winter weather, and have used TripMate in the past. I paid AAA who in turn paid the travel agency who in turn paid American. I called AAA, the Travel Agency, American Airlines and Trip Mate to find out where my money was.
American refunded the travel agency on 12/14/2024 (they sent me a confirmation email, but strangely claimed that they could NOT tell me the amount). The travel agency said they couldn't talk to me, only the booking agent at AAA. I called TripMate who emailed me the refund forms, which I filled out on 1/3/2025. They sent me an email saying they received the forms 1/7/2025. Got a link for my claim 1/29/2025. Got a letter that they needed "additional information" on 2/4/2025. Nothing specific, so I filled it out and sent it in with ALL THE RECEIPTS once again.
That's when I read their reviews about how terrible TripMate is. Then 2/12/2025 my AAA travel agent said that TripMate will issue a price difference of $265.00 per person for the business class downgrade from Dallas to LAX. And on 2/18/2025, I got a refund. No proof from TripMate on what was actually sent from American Airlines. What a disappointment and what terrible customer service. I will never use TripMate again.

The worst customer service ever encountered! After 2 appeals since August of '24, I finally got a denial and I have given up as they are the bottom of the barrel. Coverages do not correlate with their outcomes and subjective decisions! Never again! Too bad that Viking (top notch) is affiliated with such a low end business. They need to regroup in this one!

Tripmate is a scam. We arrived at the airport missing a Passport. We reschedule our flight so we could go home and find it. We could not find it. I reported it stolen and applied for a new one. I had to cancel the trip and flights. I sent all the documentation to Tripmate. They denied my claim because I did not have a police report. What a waste of time and money. Why does Sandals offer such a useless insurance on their Website.

Buyer beware of Trip Mate Insurance. I'm not sure why Viking Cruises partners with Trip Mate. I would encourage anyone considering Trip Mate for travel insurance to run in the other direction. I booked a Viking Cruise in June of 2023. The Viking rep strongly encouraged me to purchase "their insurance" for the cruise which I did as I believed Viking to be a reputable business. The cruise was booked for December 2025. The cost of the insurance was $2985.00. I had to pay Viking in full for the cruise by August 31st, 2023. I had to cancel the cruise in November 2024 due to a job change which is a covered reason for cancellation per Trip Mate Terms and Conditions.
I canceled the cruise more than a year before the cruise was scheduled to start. Viking indicated I should receive a partial refund from Trip Mate for $200 of the $2985.00 I paid them for insurance. I filed a claim with Trip Mate and provided all required documentation. Trip Mate will not refund the $200.00 and instead sent me a worthless $200 voucher for another Viking cruise. I will never travel with Viking after this experience. When I reached out to Viking for assistance, they basically pointed me back to Trip Mate telling me they have nothing to do with Trip Mate. I asked to speak to someone at Trip Mate claims dept. I was told their Claims dept. will not speak to customers.
The Trip Mate rep told me I was "lucky Viking refunded me the full amount for the cruise." This doesn't change the fact that I'm out $2985.00 from Trip Mate. They refused to give me the $200.00 refund that is due me under their Terms and Conditions. I've read multiple complaints online about this company. They have been sued by customers for failing to pay out claims. Save yourself the grief and purchase travel insurance from a company like Allianz.

If I was able to give less than a star I would. I purchased trip protection from World Nomads for a trip my wife and I took to Nepal. Unfortunately both my wife and I fell very sick after making it to Everest Base Camp and climbing Ama Dablam. We were rushed to a hospital and had to sent to Kathmandu by helicopter and had to stay 4 days in a hospital. We spent over $7,500 between the flight and hospital feeling secure that we had coverage and would be reimbursed. This was in November. After several phone calls trying to navigate their claim submission we submitted our claim on 11/27/2024. It is now 02/04/2025 and I still have no resolution to my claim. I will never use World Nomads or anything related to Trip Mates again

We are dealing with terrible customer service from TripMate. We booked my "dream vacation" for my 50th Birthday Dec, 2024. A Western Mediterranean Cruise. I started to feel nauseous on the long flight to Rome. Once we got to the hotel in Rome the day before the cruise I started to get worse. I was so sick, weak and body shakes, etc. So we went to the ER in Rome. (That is another story, a terrible experience one at that.). The ER was less than helpful and didn't do much after hrs. After returning back to the hotel I was not feeling any better. We cancelled the cruise in fear of getting worse on the ship and having to be medivaced to another hospital. We had to rebook flights next day to return to the US. I did not want to go back to that horrible hospital. Upon speaking with Tripmate they said to scan and email all documents and proof of expenses, etc.
It took days to compile all the receipts, credit card statements, airline, cruise cancellation forms, etc. We scanned 48 pages of all the required documents. We finally got an explanation of benefits calculation from Tripmate. We couldn't figure out where they got some of those numbers from??? We called to get tossed around a few times, then a "lead CSR" Sean called us back. He was less than helpful. He couldn't find the certain document, he couldn't see certain files? Blah Blah Blah. Has anyone been told this "you must have the original receipt from the merchant in order for them to reimburse you?" WE did not carry cash around Europe. We used our AMEX and Visa.
We provided the credit card statements with all the charges. Sorry, but the cab driver to the ER did not print us a receipt, or the food delivered to the hotel from an app didn't leave a receipt either, or the shuttle from the hotel to the airport. That's ridiculous. Also they will not reimburse us the airfare we had paid to return home last minute. We had round trip tickets of course originally but when we had to book last minute tickets to get home it was like 1k more each on top of the price we originally paid. They will only reimburse us the additional fee we had to pay not the original amount we paid for the return flight already. Why??? I don't get it??? None of this is stated in our policy?
Now all they do is tell us we have to email an appeal. Stall tactics and drag this out for months probably. I am so upset I had to cancel my "dream vacation" That we booked 7 months in advance and worked so hard to pay it off just to be distraught from the run around from this company. They do not stand by their policies and just steal your money and deny claims. I am going to call the Insurance Commissioner to investigate their business practices.

Thanks for your review, Stacie. If you could provide more details about your review, please email our Customer Experience department at CXCareTeam@generalitravelinsurance.com. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

I am very unhappy with my experiences with TripMate Insurance. I booked an flight from Dallas Tx to Houston Tx and canceled it well within the time required by the guidelines of the insurance policy. After filing the claim and receiving a seven page claim form for myself and my doctor to fill out was complied with the insurance company delay the claim and insisting more information and documents from the airlines and my doctor to sign. Information they already had access to, they showed me that they never intended to honor the contract by giving me the runaround. I would never use Trip mate services again nor will I use any booking site affiliated with them again nor would I recommend it for anyone. I had to cancel my trip to Jamaica due to the fact the Orlando Airport shut down because of a hurricane which in turn my connecting flight was canceled. I called Couples Resort and canceled my reservation because I had no way of getting there. I then called Trip Mate to ask them my next step. The gentleman I spoke to asked if the flights were canceled yet. I said no but, the airport shut down. He then stated that I should have not canceled my room yet and I messed everything up. I called Couples back 15 minutes later and re-established my room. Couples had to give me a new booking number even though I was still getting the same room for the same dates. The airline then canceled the flights the next day. I then called Couples back and canceled the reservation again.
I then filed with Trip Mate for my room refund of $5805.00 with all the proof the airport was shut down by the Orlando Airport Authority. A government entity which is covered under their policy as a reason for trip cancellation. I waited 30 plus days with no word, so I called for status. The agent I was connected to started to tell me I was declined because I canceled because of a named storm and the insurance did not cover that. I tried to argue the point and she completely got ignorant with me. I then asked for a superior and she stated she was a superior and any other superior will tell me the same thing. I finally made her transfer me. This time I was connected with a more friendly person. He stated that I also had an open reservation with couples yet. I told him I canceled and then rebooked because their agent scared me that I did something wrong and would not get covered.
He stated that he will look into it and get back with me in a couple of days. It has now been a week and a half and nothing. So far, how I feel with this company, is that they are going to find any way not to pay my claim. In review, I had to cancel my trip because the airport closed down. I canceled my rooms and then rebooked because their agent told me I should not have canceled the room yet. To this day, I’m not sure why it mattered. I was not getting there. Claim **.

Since returning from our trip, I have submitted about 20 emails and 40 documents to tripmate. When I questioned why additional redundant doc was needed I was told the claim adjuster will not work the claim unless I sent the requested doc. IMO… It’s a runaround delay tactic to not pay our claim. Viking Cruises scheduled the doctor for us.. My husband and I were diagnosed with bronchitis and acute respiratory illness. We were prescribed antibiotics and bed rest. What is the problem with Trip Mate honoring our insurance claim? So far, I have spent at least 8 hours collecting, copying, scanning, and emailing them doc. Ridiculous amount of time for two doctor visits. So far - after about a month - I have not been sent any compensation for our out of pocket medical expenses.

Trip Mate has used the exact same reason for the delay in payment for the second time.. In 2020 we had to cancel a trip because I was diagnosed with cancer. This year we took the same trip we didn't go on in 2020. This time my wife got ill half way through the trip and we were dropped from the tour. (Another complaint with CIE Tours.) Both trips were covered by TripMate and both claim payments were delayed for about 3 to 4 months after being approved for the exact same excuse.
TripMate claims that the checks were issued a month after the claim was approved but then after a month later when there are no checks, they claim that the checks must be lost and the old checks have to be cancelled and new checks issued. After which another month and a half goes by with no payment and when called they have another excuse that they just cancelled the checks (a month and a half after they said the checks were lost) and that it will take another 21 days at least for new checks to be issued. This was exactly the same scenario as the first claim four years ago!!!

Worst experience ever! I had to cancel a Viking cruise due to a disabling and sudden medical condition. After 6 months of haggling, providing documentation, repeat doctor appointments just so that she could personally fill out forms because it was not allowed that her office staff fill out the forms for her signature, etc. After the second and unfounded denial, I finally filed a complaint with the Missouri Insurance Commission. Surprise, a few days later my claim was suddenly approved! They still took several weeks to mail my reimbursement though. If you’re still having a hard time collecting on a legitimate claim I would highly recommend contacting the Missouri Insurance Commission. They were really helpful and nice.

First they only reimburse me for a day and when I called and explained I missed my whole trip they said they would relook at it. After a month I call back and it never was never reopened and they wanted me to email them and I refused since they didn’t do their job a month ago. The review need more info. In my TMB trip, I seriously hurt my ankle during hiking and couldn’t continue. I called a taxi and rested in local hotel for 3 days. No expensive medical bill at all, just claim for transportation fee and hotel expense. After submitting complete claim materials, including physician statements, it was rejected!! My conclusion is that the company is indeed poor either financially or morally.

I have waiting over 4 months for a refund of almost $3k from TripMate. After many delays, they emailed a check which, even with the help of my local bank, I could not print in such a way as to deposit the check. They have repeatedly assured me a "check is in the mail." My most recent communication was in July and August, 2024. I get a total runaround, no one assumes responsibility for my refund, and I strongly suggest you choose another way to insure your valuable trip.

Updated on 10/29/2024: This is an update to a previous review I posted detailing the difficulties I had dealing with Trip Mate. This was their response: "We value your feedback, Karen. Unfortunately, we could not locate a claim with the information provided in your review. If you would like to share more about your 1-star review, please email our Customer Experience Department @ marketing_ecommerce@generalitravelinsurance.com with your name and claim number."
Strangely shortly after they found my claim information and finally on 10/4/2024 after many more emails and phone calls, they sent me an email that allowed me to print a check for $60 (the amount of my claim). A service charge of $4.91 would have been applied with a direct deposit or any other kind of transfer! Luckily, I have access to a printer and was able to print my check and deposit it. It took from June until October to get my money. My friend who was also due about $250 finally gave up and said it wasn't worth it. I think that's what they count on. I am increasing my review score to a 2 star since I did receive the reimbursement....finally.
Original review: I agree with others who have said Trip Mate is terrible insurance. A friend and I traveled to Africa recently. We experienced a flight cancellation and missed the first day of our tour and had to get a hotel room, meals, etc. Trip Mate would not reimburse me because she paid for the entire trip expenses with her credit card. I had to file a separate claim which was terribly difficult due to circumstances where I live in Summer (no printer or internet). Even though the amount was only $60, it is the principal. If they can make it so difficult for you to file a claim and get reimbursement, they hope you'll give up. We both did. Then they can pocket the $60. Multiply that by several hundred people and you have quite a saving for Trip Mate. If I could give 0 stars I would. Buyer beware.

I would not recommend this company to anyone. My boyfriend and I were supposed to fly to Jamaica on July 20th, and he ended up testing positive for COVID on the 18th. He only took an at-home test because he did not feel a trip to urgent care or the ER warranted the extra bill. Paid the money for travel insurance only for them to fight us on giving back our refund because "he did not seek medical treatment".
I spoke to one agent with the company who told us he could bring proof of the positive test and they could fill out the form, but everywhere I call says they do not do that. I spoke to a different agent who basically just told me there is nothing they can do without that form. So it is a lose-lose situation. CDC recommends to seek treatment if symptoms persist for more than 5-7 days, but he was feeling a lot better (still exhibiting symptoms) within 24 hours, which especially did not warrant a trip to his PCP, urgent care, or ER. Everyone I have spoke to with customer service has either given me wrong information, has been extremely rude, or both.

We’re sorry the coverage didn’t meet your expectations, A. As stated in our Plan documents, our plans only reimburse for non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. Our plans can help if you are diagnosed with Coronavirus before or during your trip. You just need to meet the standard requirements for coverage due to sickness, and our plans can assist you with Trip Cancellation. It is important that you review your coverage details, which are available before and after your purchase. We take the claims process very seriously and want our travelers to make informed choices when purchasing travel coverage. After a Viking trip we missed our flight out of Madrid Airport due to some type of security threat which resulted very slow lines of passport checks. New tickets were issued for our flight home. We tried to get documentation for the delay at the airport with no success and so attempted to just collect the money for our flight from Miami to Detroit. We were reimbursed for only part of our flight home. When I questioned why we were only given reimbursement for one leg of our journey, they told me that this ticket was not part of our original purchase and therefore exempt. Of course it was different as we needed a new ticket to get home after missing our flight!!!!
Everyone I talked to had a different reason for denial of claim. I even received a letter at one point saying they had overpaid us and we owed them money, This was before I even received the little check they finally sent. Incredible. I classify this experience as one of the most time consuming and frustrating experiences in my lifetime. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS INSURANCE.

I would rate a zero if I could. Missed my departure fight due to illness and was told I would be reimbursed. After weeks of submitting duplicate paperwork was told they only cover the land portion of the trip which is NOT stated in my contract. So happy I have a platform of over 1million followers and will definitely share my experience. Scam scam scam.

We booked a cruise on Viking with a pre-trip extension, all insured by TripMate. We missed the first day of the pre-trip extension because of a delayed flight causing us to miss our connection in Chicago. We were forced to rebook for the following day. The delay occurred in our hometown so we 1. took a cab home from the airport, 2. stayed at home rather than a hotel, 3. took a cab back to the airport the next day. United Airlines provided a "Delay Letter" as requested by Trip Mate. The claim was quite simple, two cab rides (each documented with receipts), one day missed on the $1,999 per person pre-trip extension (documented by Viking). We had even saved them the cost of a hotel room by going home for the night.
TripMate kept asking for the same documentation (which we repeatedly provided) and then they "settled" the claim by paying for the cab ride home from the airport. There isn't much money involved here but what better example can you find of an inept (or corrupt) insurer? They totally ignored the lost day on the pre-trip extension and they paid for a cab ride one way but not the return trip! Were we supposed to walk back to the airport in the morning. I only wish that I had read these reviews before buying Viking's insurance!

Do not take any trip that uses this company for anything. Seriously. We submitted our claim in May and it's now July and no payment after it was approved in May. They delayed payment by sending a check to an incorrect address. We called twice to correct the address and then they had the address made to another state!

We missed a night stay in Paris due a delayed flight. Wanted to get there a day early so as not to run the risk of missing the cruise (why we took out insurance). Trip Mate Said we weren’t covered under their policy. Lots of red tape, duplicity of forms. Much rhetoric. BUYER BEWARE!! Bait and switch tactics.

If I could leave no stars, I would. We purchased tickets to our destination directly from the airline and our return flight through a third party app. We didn’t purchase insurance from the airline; however we purchased Tripmate insurance for our return flight tickets. Our flight out was delayed for over 4 hours, so we didn’t go. Our tickets were refunded, no questions asked by the airline. We submitted our claim for reimbursement for our return flight, as we couldn’t use our tickets because we never arrived at our destination. They requested extra documentation, which we provided, all for in the end to be denied, no explanation, no correspondence at all. When we called for an explanation, we were simply told that the reason didn’t fall under the criteria for reimbursement. This is a complete waste of money. Buy your tickets directly from the airline, where customer satisfaction clearly is a priority.

Trip Mate is the worst travel insurance. I had a medical emergency back in September 2023 and my trip was scheduled for next month. I called and cancelled my trip within the designated window and I'm still waiting on entire refund to be returned. I have called to many times to count and have sent several emails. I'm now looking to get legal action because this company is a rip off. Please avoid at all cost.

I had a valid reason to cancel trip, passport company was to deliver it by April 2nd but did not deliver. We had to cancel, but I had paid lots of money to Expedited Travel for my passport to arrive in 3-5 days! It took over 3 weeks, exactly what I could have done with the Government passport service. They have not repaid me for anything. I only want compensation for my loss or credit on another trip.

We're sorry to hear you had to cancel your trip and apologize for not meeting your expectations. We take customer service and the claims review process very seriously and stress the importance of reviewing the coverage details of our plans at www.tripmate.com/main/plan-documents/ which are provided at the time of purchase and contacting 833.297.2255 or claimssupport@tripmate.com with any additional questions you may have. We also offer a free look period with all of our plans to allow travelers to cancel their plan within a designated period as long as they haven't already left on their trip or filed a claim. While the plan is typically able to provide coverage if you are forced to cancel due to a documented theft of your passport or visa, the plan is unfortunately unable to provide coverage if your passport is invalid. If there is something specific that you want to be sure is covered, feel free to ask about it before you purchase the plan.
