My son and I recently returned from the Rhine/Mosel River Cruise and can recommend it wholeheartedly. Everything was perfect. The staff is exceptional including Amin, our Program Director. The sites were beautiful, we learned so much, the food was excellent, the cabin was comfortable, the gym was a nice bonus, and all in all it was an exceptional experience for both of us. The captain was always there to greet us with his warm smile whenever we came back from a day trip.
Every detail was thought of including cold towels and cold drinks upon returning from a hot day, cleaning of the cabin twice a day, the delicious food and wait staff. We didn’t want it to end. This was my 3rd river cruise with GCT in the last 12 months and I am looking forward to the next one hopefully soon. Great value and can’t recommend it enough. Thank you Harmony team. You are all very special and created wonderful memories for us.

This was my 7th GCT trip and it was the best. The itinerary was great, along with the rustic hotels (large clean rooms), hotel food, free time options and of course our Trip Leader Tara. The Parks Service 5 hour tour of Denali and the Kenai Fjord National Parks 6 hour cruise were the trip highlights. We saw Glaciers up close, had guest presenters after meals, and cloudless sightings for two days of Mt. Denali.

We haven't sailed yet, and at this point, I am NOT looking forward to the experience. I booked the cruise after being quoted the price over the phone by the agent. The booking itself took well over 2 hours with multiple callbacks from her disconnecting on her end and computer issues on her end. I was quoted a price, but when she went to book it she had "lost" the price, so she collected the "full" payment (too close to the sailing date not to pay in full).
I was told there would be a $200 balance that would be reversed due to this issue. Fast forward a month. I received a call that I OWE the $200. She made a mistake. The supervisor says they reserve the right to price correct for their operators' errors and pay it or not be able to travel. I would have happily skipped the cruise. I do not want to do business with a company that has as its policy to enter into a contract with a customer based on a quoted price only to say it is their POLICY to go back and correct the fare. Sadly, I am not the only room booked on this cruise. The others also taking the cruise cannot go without me. Because I have others traveling who cannot back out because of my reservation error, I am forced to pay more and travel with this highly questionable cruise line. This will be a one-shot deal for me. There are too many operators out there to do business with a company like this.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We sincerely regret the frustration and confusion you've encountered during the booking process. This is not the experience we want for our travelers. We want to look into this further and clarify your specific situation. Please email us at request@oattravel.com with your reservation number so a team member can follow up with you directly. We hope the cruise exceeds your expectations, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

If you have never been on a trip with Grand Circle, you must try it. The staff is caring and knowledgeable. The staff was willing to help with problems, directions, suggestions for free time. The prices on their trips are very affordable and you will wonder how they do it. I just got back from the Alpine trip. A beautiful experience. The weather was very hot and very few places were air conditioned but global warming is not their problem. So be aware of where you go and when but always travel with Grand Circle. I don't think they advertise and they depend on word of mouth which is probably how they keep costs down. But that's great for the traveller.

This was not one of our better trips with this company, but not because of it or its staff. My wife and I got sick during our pre trip 6 days. We unfortunately had to return before the main part of the trip took place. One of the reasons we travel with GCCL and its other divisions is because we know how much they care for their travelers. This trip was for a cruise of the Douro River in Portugal. The pre trip began with a tour of the coastal portion of Portugal. Very well done! 27 in our group. Our trip leader was terrific!! Well organized, very versed of the history and significant facts about each of the areas we visited. The hotel accommodations were first rate. The food was wonderful. A very good way to get to know the people and area.
Once we realized that we had a problem, my wife was ill and I wasn't feeling well either. Our trip leader took control. She had a Hotel Dr. come to our room to check out my wife and write up a diagnosis and need to return home immediately. Mine was just a cough, but sleeping a lot when I could. The Iberia office handled the airline reservations for the return flight and transportation from the hotel to the airport and help getting to the ticket counter. Both of us want to return to do the Douro river cruise. We do want the same Trip Leader! She was outstanding, fun to be with and very interesting. She loved her country! I was diagnosed with Covid the day after my return, glad to be home.

We just returned from the Grand Circle Cruise River Cruise on the Danube. It started in Bucharest, which I highly recommend starting east and then traveling west, ending in Budapest. Highlights: Amazing food, fantastic ship crew, a great value for the trip. Our Trip Experience Leader was an amazing young woman, leading our group of 33. There were 4 groups on the trip, each with their own leader. We interacted with all 4 - which was great. All are from Eastern Europe, and they gave us an evening of discussion of what it was like growing up post USSR break up. The daily excursions were thoughtful and about 1/2 a day, returning to the ship for a wonderful lunch.
Grand Circle, and their sister company, Overseas Adventure Company pride themselves on education opportunities. Onboard the ship we learned about what it was like living under Ceausescu, we learned about the Balkan War between the Serbian government and Croatia. We had discussions about the Hungary government.
This is one major reason we travel with this company as we are very interested in how people live in each destination. Now that Covid is long over, we have had great communication with the home office in Boston, very short wait times on the phone, opportunity to rate each phone call. The trip information on the website is very thorough. All in all, a wonderful trip and we plan to take many more with Grand Circle Travel.

In May 2025 my wife and I took The Seine: Paris to Normandy and then the post-trip to Brittany. To say the least, it exceeded our expectations. The weather certainly cooperated. We enjoyed our guided tours of Paris and our two free afternoons to make the most of the city as was possible. The food was excellent with many delicious choices. The entire staff was very attentive. In particular, our trip guide, Chloe, was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. All of our stops after leaving Paris were memorable, whether it be Monet's Gardens, Richard the Lionheart's castle ruins or the lovely city of Rouen. Loved the medieval villages. The D-Day beaches, the American cemetery and the Caen Memorial Museum were reminders of another time. Brittany was a wonderful addition to this trip. A bonus was seeing the Bayeux Tapestry as this was not a planned visit. We enjoyed walking up Mont Saint-Michel. We were situated in St. Malo, a historic town with its own charm. On our last day we spent time at Chartres Cathedral. For history and architecture lovers this was a fantastic trip. We rank this among our best trips.

I have no idea how anyone could rate GCT/OAT other than 5 star. No the ships are not the most luxurious but they don't claim to be and the prices reflect that. We have been on 11 trips with the company from Australia to Canadian Rockies to Italy, France, Germany, etc. and have always experienced great food and very accommodating crew. Don't want tonight's desert, how about a fruit plate. Want a hamburger for lunch, no problem. Low water levels along the European rivers is a natural occurrence and beyond the control of any cruise company. GCT has always provided very acceptable alternatives when these conditions exist and go out of their way to make the sudden change in itinerary as painless as possible.

This was our first river cruise. We usually find a destination we both like, and visit on our own. We traveled on the M/S River Harmony, a very nice ship with a capacity of 140. We were very impressed with our Program Director, who led our smaller group of 42 people. The crew members were absolutely stellar - I can’t think of one complaint about them. Our cabin was 160 square feet with twin beds and a large picture window. The itinerary was especially nice - from Amsterdam to Vienna with many stops in Germany. The food was very good to great and very generous. We are used to eating lighter and earlier, so we had to pace ourselves.
The two optional tours we took (to Rothenburg and a concert in Vienna) were a lot of fun and well worth the money. The home visit in Wertheim was very enlightening, as were the on-board talks about the destinations on our route. We missed a few activities because we needed to rest. A few things to note: all the cabins have twin beds, and they can’t be combined to make a king. Beds are put up during the day, leaving a small couch (comfortable for sitting, but too small for naps). We are seniors (69 and 73), and many of our fellow passengers were older. However, most were extremely fit and active. The Grand Circle website is very informative about the physical requirements for the trip. We did a lot of walking. I sometimes opted for the “gentle-paced” tours, which were easier for me.

This was our first Grand Circle experience. We cruised the Rhone for Toulouse Lyon. It was fantastic. The "CHANSON" was beautiful and intimate without any feeling of being small. The staff and guests quickly became a family enjoying each other's company - and I mean all the staff from the Captain to the people doing our rooms. Corrinna, the Ship's social director, was a sweet bundle of energy. Vincent, the tour director for our group, and Louise, director for the other, were a team when together. Vincent was knowledgeable, patient and like having a friend taking you around when visiting.
There were glitches of course. A cable came down on a bridge on our way to Lyon shutting down the river completely for all boats! The pivot was seamless! We docked where we could, and buses were waiting to keep us as close to our itinerary as possible. They booked a restaurant for lunch since we would have lost time going to and from the ship. The stay in Paris at the end was just as nice. Beautiful hotel in a walk to everything location with excellent tours included. We have been ocean cruisers for a long time - this beats it hands down!

Paris was our gathering place to begin the Lyon to Toulouse Rhone River cruise. We were only there for 2 nights, one of which was spent trying to acclimate to the new time zone. Next time, I will take advantage of the "arrive early" option. I had never been to Paris and was really hoping we might have a quick drive through Paris to see a few of the highlights, such as the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph, Louvre, etc. I spoke to our Trip Leader, Armelle, and she very kindly told me that if a few others cared to go, she would take us by Metro after our Welcome Dinner to a place where we could see the Eiffel Tower. It was amazing!! I was so impressed with her willingness to do that! I must say, she was one of the very best TLs ever!! Thanks, Armelle for a wonderful trip.

My trip to Sicily & Malta was fantastic from start to finish. Learning about ancient to present cultures is fascinating and humbling. There are many, many UNESCO World Heritage sites in both Sicily and Malta, such as Villa Romana del Casale, Agrigento, Valletta and Hagar Qim Temple. To be able to travel to them and see these sites with an experienced guide is life-changing. I also appreciated the controversial conversations with experts provided in both locations. It is always good to have "both sides of the story." The "Learning and Discovery" experiences were varied, including local food and drink, dinner with a local musician and a Sicilian Puppet discussion with a local family.
Our program director was well-organized and ensured all special requests from various group members were met. She was positive, energetic and ensured all group members were being included and happy. Our local guides were outstanding, knowledgeable and happy to answer any and all questions. I would highly recommend this "active" adventure to anyone looking to see ancient cities, beautiful blue skies, blue water, green rolling hillsides and enjoy delicious and unique foods and beverages.

This was my first river cruise and first time in France. What a great introduction to river cruising and France! Our first stop was Toulouse, where we enjoyed a great tour of the city and got over jet lag. We then went by comfortable bus to Arles, where we boarded our ship. It was Easter weekend and our guide made sure that we got a flavor of the city during this important holiday for the residents. We sailed on the MS Chanson on the Rhone River. The ship was spotless, the crew members were attentive and pleasant, the food was excellent, our program guide, Lionel, was fantastic and our excursions were interesting and varied.

Staff and crew are keenly attuned to their passengers on a well-appointed ship that is both well-maintained and extremely clean. This is a great cruise company. We have been on 11 cruises through Grand Circle Travel and enjoy the care by the staff who take care of the passengers throughout the cruise. There are some glitches once in a while but they are human. The most recent cruise was timed so that we were at the famous tulip plus flower garden park in the Netherlands. It was full of people so much that it was not enjoyable. We haven been on two other trips to this park with Grand Circle that were during the week and there were just the right number of people to be able to enjoy the gardens. The ports of call were very good (Enkhuizen, Kinderdijk, Dordchecht, Zeeland, Ghent, & Antwerp) and the program directors are informative. They gave a guided tour or a tour by a local at each port all of which were included in the price. I highly recommend Grand Circle Travel River cruises.

Original review: We are excited to have just booked our first tour through Grand Circle. After confirming cost figures over the phone, with our very personable and efficient rep., we found the price on the printed invoice we received the next day to be significantly higher. Obviously, not good! I am very impressed and appreciate of the extensive, time intensive, polite follow up by three different agents and supervisors to resolve this issue. They went above and beyond to understand how the difference occurred (which was created by some complications in airfare) and to resolve the problem. I have never experienced such personable and extensive customer service! I am impressed and comfortable knowing they did all they could to make me a happy customer. We look forward to our trip!

We had been on 9 OAT land tours, but had never done a Grand Circle river cruise due to my fears. I do not swim and get seasick so I was hesitant to try the river cruise, but I wanted to see southern France and Paris so we signed up. I was very surprised to find that I was not sick or scared on the boat as the sailing was very smooth. The pace was slower than our land tours and we loved it! The tour guide, Melodie, was one of the best we have had and the boat staff was wonderful. I felt very pampered the whole trip and will go on another river cruise in the future.

This was my first experience with Grand Circle and unfortunately I was very disappointed. Our tour in Mexico had close to 40 people in it. The impact on the quality of the tour was immense. First, with this number of participants a very large bus is required which resulted in difficulty navigating busy streets in Mexico and near impossible navigation in smaller towns with narrow streets. The result was missed opportunities to go inside some major venues, ongoing schedule changes which did not always match opening hours of some venues. The bus was not the only issue. Try following the group leader on narrow, busy sidewalks. It was easy to get separated from the tour. Imagine a group of 40 in a local restaurant.
Food choices were offered but meals had to be mass produced and were served generally room temperature. Limited choice of beverages. Lack of full service hotels meant that you couldn’t get a snack if you were not interested in walking city streets at night. All in all, while there were some highlights of the trip there were a lot of missed venues due to overcrowding and inadequate advance planning and consideration of the local environment.

We appreciate your feedback and regret that the group size and logistics didn’t meet your expectations. We value your feedback as we continuously work to improve. For travelers seeking a more intimate experience, our sister company, Overseas Adventure Travel, offers small group adventures with a maximum of 16 travelers.

I just was on my 1st River Cruise with Grand Circle / OAT, wasn’t sure what to expect and it blew me away. From the moment you step foot onto the boat until the moment you walk off at the end you will be surrounded by amazing people. My friend and I didn’t arrive until about 11:30pm due to airline issues. Our Program Director was fantastic at answering emails and arranging a bus to pick us up at the airport and taking us to the boat.
Once we stepped onto the boat, we were greeted by the guy at the desk. He took us to see the lounge, dining room then to our cabins. Each cabin door had a small Christmas stocking on the front. Then he brought each of us a sandwich & salad which was very much appreciated. We each settled into our cabin for the night. In the morning we walked to the dining room for breakfast. They have a really wonderful buffet, fresh fruit, an assortment of hot items, juices, cereals, danish and then there was a guy making fresh omelets which were yummy, Lunch was also a buffet of a guy making something different each day, fresh breads, salad fixings and specials on the menu which you order.
At dinner the table has a basket of bread or rolls with butter and your waiter will come over to take your order. Everything was plated so nicely and the flavors were perfect. Then there was dessert and coffee. After you walk over to the lounge where you will find fellow cruisers and music to enjoy. There are nights where the crew does a show with skits which were amazing, we had a children’s singing group come in to sing German Christmas songs to us, then 2 songs that we sang with them. There were walking tours, bus tours which were wonderful. They kept us very busy. Highly recommend. You won’t be sorry.

I recently returned from The Seine: from Paris to Normandy cruise. Truly incredible! This was my first ever cruise and from the inception to completion it was a master class in meticulous attention to detail and professionalism. Everything was considered and designed to ensure that each participant had a marvelous experience. The cruise was a total immersion in French culture, from the lectures about the educational system and history of France, to the walks in the various villages and sites, to the lunches and dinners featuring French dishes and wines, to the evening entertainment (concert of French composers, to can-can dancers and more).
The program directors were exceptional. The depth and breadth of their knowledge from the lectures given onboard (ship and bus) to the walks they led in various villages and communities--they were all quite extraordinary! The food was like dining in a 5-star restaurant due to the quality, variety, and freshness. The chef was amazing. There were always several choices at each meal including a vegetarian one and the chef would fix a modified plate if needed. The desserts were works of art! The wines were from different regions as were the nightly cheeses after dinner.
The cruise ship was immaculately cleaned, the rooms extremely comfortable (as were the beds) and the ship's crew were all friendly, professional, accommodating and did all of their work with a "joie de vivre" attitude. I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience. Due to a major weather incident in France our itinerary changed. Severe flooding was expected and it was not safe for the boat to travel on the river. This was disappointing but no one's fault. Our tour guide, LOLO was amazing. With the help of GCT central office we were bused around Southern France, staying in lovely hotels and having our meals in great restaurants.
Our group consisted of older experienced travelers. No one complained at all. We appreciated how hard the tour guides worked to provide a lovely trip. After a few days when the rivers became safe we were able to board the boat. This was a culinary trip and we had fantastic meals, thanks to Daka, our executive chef and his staff. The next day he took us to the market in Lyon which was interesting, we then went to the chef's cooking classes. Taking the train to Paris was fun. The hotel in Paris was very nice and centrally located.
The thing I like best about my Grand Circle Trips is the level of care and service provided. All we have to do is make our way to the airport and everything else is so well planned and fun. It's comforting to know that when things do not go as planned we will be taken care of. We would not want to travel with another company.. I recently returned from the "Romance of the Rhine & Mosel" cruise on the MS River Harmony with GCCL. This was my second trip with this cruise line and I must say, I enjoyed both experiences tremendously. On this trip, my grandmother and I traveled together, with the cruise's itinerary allowing us to easily make new friends with fellow passengers, Program Directors, and the crew. The ship was quite comfortable, accommodating, and always exquisitely cleaned. The wifi did not always function to its best ability, however, this was a minor, occasional difficulty that was overwhelming diminished by the wonderful excursions and engaging conversations I had with others throughout this trip.
The activities onboard were just as entertaining and interesting as the walking tours and other offerings within the cities and towns we visited. This entertainment was also informative and relevant in the current society, which I greatly appreciated. I especially enjoyed optional activities such as a bike ride along the Dutch windmills and a hike from "Drachenberg", which allowed for more physical activity if you so chose. We had plenty of wine to sip, delicious meals prepared every day, and such compassionate, fun, and attentive waiters and waitresses. Thank you Grand Circle for a great experience!

The itinerary was well planned, absolutely on time, and very professional in its administration. This river cruise represented great value for money, and we look forward to seeking another river cruise with Grand Circle in the near future.

We have been on 2 Grand Circle tours and 1 OAT tour. I love this company for the personal experiences they give such as the home hosted meals. I think this company offers unique experiences you don't get elsewhere. Our guides have all been very knowledgeable and helpful. I also have food allergies and the guides and hotels were extremely helpful in making sure I was accommodated appropriately.

My Grand Circle trip to Italy was fantastic! Not only did we see amazing sites, countryside, and sculptures, our tour guides at each location were local knowledgeable residents. But, Georgia, who was with us from day one until this special trip ended, hosted us to some memorable meals, cooking class, vineyard visit, olive oil factory visit and much more. 14 days flew by quickly and Georgia made it all the more memorable. She was so special and loved by all. I definitely recommend Grand Circle Travel and am thankful that a friend of mine told me about this trip.

Our cruise director was so very knowledgeable on all of our many tours that he shared with us while touring the many cities we stopped at. I would highly recommend Grand Circle tours to everyone.

Grand Circle Cruise Line (a Grand Circle Corp. company) FAILED US MISERABLY. And now they won't even talk to us. Yes, this was not our first trip with them. In fact, we are part of their inner circle club, The Sir Edmund Hillary Club. They issued us documents saying we had First class seats on a trip to France for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. When we got to Chicago, we were told we were in Premium Economy. We asked to have our return tickets adjusted to meet what we were promised. Two weeks on the trip and no joy. We came home in Premium Economy. We got home and sent a complaint eMail to them. The reply was that it had to be reviewed by the quality group - expect an answer in two weeks.
Two months went by and they had not answered. We sent another eMail and got the same "two week" answer. That was about two months ago. No answer. We sent a letter by return receipt USPS for $11 in postage. It was refused as undeliverable as addressed. Guess that means that they wouldn't sign for it. In looking up their corporate leadership, I found they reneged on a sale of the company in 2007 when they were in financial difficulty. This seemed to have been precipitated by the way they were handling refunds for cancelled trips. Then I found that they filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March of 2024. I can find not news that they have come out of Chapter 11. So, if they are fighting chapter 11, I guess their issues are more than just one upset family. If you are booking with them, I suggest you check your travel insurance to see what coverage there is if your trip doesn't go as planned. I'd worry about unpaid vendors and last minute cancellations.

We are sorry to read of your experience. If you would send us your reservation number we can have management review your claim. Please email us at request@oattravel.com.

This was my second cruise with Grand Circle. Both were fabulous. The boat is well appointed, comfortable and very clean. The staff was amazing. From the hospitality manager to deck hands to housekeeping every member was pleasant helpful and well informed. The tour directors were fantastic and are really more like a personal concierge. They assist travelers to enjoy every minute of the trip. They are a font of information. We experienced a lost passport and Christine was irreplaceable in assisting us to resolve the issue which involved a bus, train and Uber commute. She supplied details that made everything go smoothly and went above and beyond to help us.
Our mishap ended up being a small bump in the road. The itinerary is well planned and a variety of choices provided based on travelers' abilities and accommodates each traveler. I have been to Paris before and was excited to have new experiences in the city. Grand Circle provides interesting and enjoyable experiences each day with no pressure. Food is fantastic and beautiful. I will certainly make my next trip with this excellent company.

I have toured with a company where I changed out hotel rooms often and it was a more stressful way to travel and exhausting. I loved how the staff was friendly and welcoming and enjoyed their efforts at entertaining us. It brings a smile to my face thinking about it. I have to admit that I was having separation anxiety upon leaving and I will remember this trip for years to come and perhaps I will return in the future!

There are a number of reason why I chose only 3 stars for this, my 6th trip with Grand Circle/OAT.
1. I originally booked this trip with both pre and post trip extensions. At some later time I had the pre trip removed, and then still later, I had that put back on. When I received my updated documents I did NOT notice that the post trip to Madiera was removed. As this was my second trip to Spain/Portugal, this was the main reason why I wanted to go back. Instead, I used the departure and return dates to book my own airfare.
About 3 weeks prior to begin this trip, I received my final travel booklet and it was then that I noticed the post trip had been removed. I immediately contacted GC and was told that the extension could be added back on (at the new higher rate). I spent the next 2-3 hours on the phone with the airlines and booking agent to get my flight changed, to no avail. The best they could do was charge me an additional $4500 on top of what I had already spent. GC should never have removed the post trip, and I should have been more diligent in reviewing everything. But still, I had to book a separate trip from Lisbon out to Madiara to connect with my return flight.
2. I was never aware that there would be up to 42 people on the trip (There were 38). All my previous trips were topped out at 16. A number of others said the same to me. It was way too many people and required a huge bus to transport everyone.
3. Within the first week, one to the travelers came down with an illness. Nobody knew what is was...a cold, covid, something else?? A number of other became ill as the trip progressed and the second to last day, I became ill. Early in the morning as I was about to go to the airport, the trip leader came to my room and told me one of the members or our group tested positive for Covid. It wasn't until got home that I tested positive for Covid and was sick tor a total of 9 days. In retrospect, I think it is the responsibility of the trip leader to immediately get any/all sick people to a clinic/doctor's office and or hospital to determine the nature of the illness. When I got home, the emergency doctor who saw me said that until that was done, everyone should have put on masks. As it was late the I got sick, I still did not go on the final days activities, rather stayed in my hotel room.
4. As I stated above, this was my second trip to this part of Europe, and without stating the name of the other travel company, I do have something to compare it to. Overall, that other trip was much better as it went to a lot more places. It included Gibraltar and an extra trip to Morocco. It included all of Portugal all the way up to Porto, and then a drive back across northern Spain stopping at Salamanca along the way back to Madrid.
5. Lesson learned: read everything and assume nothing.

We just returned from the Romance of the Rhine and Mosel river cruise. We also opted for the extra days in Lucerne, Switzerland. The entire trip was fantastic! We like the GCT has multiple Program Directors for a small group of about 45 people instead of one PD for the entire ship (like Viking). Our PD, Simone, was amazing. When our luggage did not arrive with us, she spoke directly to the airlines letting them know where to send the luggage as the ship was already on the move. The cities we visited were interesting and educational. The family shared so much information when we had our home visit in Germany.
The onboard activities were plentiful especially after dinner. All were optional, but we attended almost all of them because they were fun and informative (different presentations about Belgium and Germany). The few days we cruised along the Rhine and Mosel were beautiful. They narrated the stories behind the castles we were seeing. All meals offered such a variety of choices - all delicious! The dinners included an entree from the county we were visiting. The staff were attentive, polite, and funny! We highly recommend this trip and Grand Circle Travel.

She was personable, knowledgeable, and spoke excellent English. She bent over backwards to accommodate everyone’s needs. The river cruise ship, the M/S Chanson, was stylish, well maintained with pleasant rooms. The crew were friendly, fun, professional and made everyone at home. We could not have asked for more.
All of the stops along the river were well organized and very interesting with plenty of free time as well as the guided tours. We would certainly recommend it. And this was all possible because of all the people associated with Grand Circle/Overseas Adventure Travel. Our program director, Anastasia was amazing and made our trip so memorable. She was one of the best program directors we have ever had and we have been on 15 trips with GCT. I will start with the positives of my Eastern Europe Cruise on the River Adagio ship from the Black Sea to Budapest Hungary that commenced on July 30, 2024. The itinerary was extensive and the program directors were amazing. I loved the educational component of the cruise which included local speakers from each of the five countries we visited. I have learned so much about these countries from the genuine people who live there. I found the food to be under-seasoned and bland. I enjoyed the entertainment in the lounge but it ended too soon. We were often nudged out of the lounge by 10 p.m. and most of the elderly guests would go to bed right after the entertainment.
Tipping in advance is against the rules but many guests tipped the crew at the beginning and it resulted in some guests not getting the same quality service as others. Some guests tested positive for Covid 19 and did not isolate in their cabins. The crew did not enforce the health guidelines on this health issue and many Covid-positive guests dined in the restaurant, socialized in the lounge, and joined the groups on the bus.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. Your feedback is helpful and will be shared with our regional staff.

We just returned from the Great Rivers of Europe cruise. We had previously taken this same cruise on Viking and Vantage (Vantage went bankrupt, so I will compare the cruise to Viking). The ship was an older than the Viking ship but was in excellent condition. The staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. On this cruise we had four program directors as compared to one on Viking. Each program director is responsible for one fourth of the passengers for the entire journey and personally handled any questions or problems that we had. For the entire cruise, there was only one optional tour, all other tours were included in the cruise price.
Viking on the other hand had several optional tours for a handsome price. Food on the ships was comparable, basically due to the head chef. The rooms had two fold down single beds which concerned me before the trip but turned out to be very comfortable and gave you a lot more walking around area in the middle of the room. One thing I did not know in advance is that Grand Circle provides coffee, tea, soft drinks, house wine and draft beer for free at all times. Viking only gave free beer, wine and soft drinks during meals. Overall, Grand Circle cruises are a lot less expensive than Viking for basically the same product! We took this cruise on Grand Circle just to compare them to other cruise lines. Based on our experience, we will definitely sail with Grand Circle in the future.

Thank you for your kind words.

I just returned from our “Budapest to the Black Sea" cruise. It was a fantastic experience. I certainly did not expect to learn as much as I did. First off, the ship was very comfortable. The rooms were maintained in tip top shape at all times. The beds were comfortable and we had no trouble sleeping whatsoever. Then there was the food. I just can’t believe the talent of these chefs. Each and every plate brought out was a work of art. They always offered several choices, and you could always order salmon or chicken if something on the menu didn’t appeal to you. I ordered salmon once just to try their salmon. Delicious! Their desserts were beautiful. One thing I really liked was that they didn’t try to stuff you. The portion sizes were sensible, although there were a couple times that I probably should have said “Half Portion” just because I didn’t arrive for that meal as hungry as usual.
Service: The wait staff in the dining room were unbelievable. We would walk in and our iced tea and wine were waiting for us. My wife eats gluten free, and after they knew that, they had gluten free toast waiting for her at breakfast, and gluten free bread at other meals. They took such good care of my wife. The cruise itself was very good, however you must remember that when you travel to Eastern Europe, you are going to learn a lot about communism, tragedy, heartache and cruelty. You will also learn how the people in these countries overcame the evil and returned to the proud countries they used to be.
The Program Directors were just incredible. They literally became our family. I can’t believe the depth and breadth of their knowledge for countries they have only visited, although each of the four directors were citizens of one of the five countries that we visited. This cruise is different than “The Great Rivers of Europe” cruise that I went on eight years ago. This cruise centered around learning rather than just sightseeing. The people they brought on board to teach us about their country were amazing. It always generated great conversation.
After ten days on board, we reached the Black Sea. After a champagne toast and a dip in the sea, we were put on a bus to Bucharest, Romania. We stayed in a beautiful Sheraton hotel and had wonderful meals served to us that included local wines. From start to finish, this was a class act. It was also VERY reasonable. I know for a fact that a friend who is in Europe today on a competitor cruise spent more than three times what I spent for this cruise. I cannot see how the accommodations, food or service could have been better on another cruise line. Grand Circle Tours definitely goes the extra mile to ensure your satisfaction. You won’t be sorry you booked with them!

My recent cruise, "Romance of the Rhine & Mosel" on the MS River Harmony, was my 12th trip with Grand Circle Cruise Line or Overseas Adventure Travel. As a recent widower, this was my first solo cruise and I was concerned that I might not be able to handle the loneliness. As it turned out there was absolutely nothing for me to worry about. The crew, Program Directors, and fellow travelers all made sure that the trip was filled with fun, interesting activities, and well-planned excursions at the various ports of call along the way.
I was impressed with the fact that the Program Director, Amin **, sent me a long email a few days before my departure, with some current advice about weather and plans with reminders of appropriate articles for me to pack. During the trip, Amin's knowledge, compassion, enthusiasm, management skills, and keen sense humor was the spark that lit up the entire trip. A true gentleman and professional. GCCL is noted for the quality of their employees, and Amin is right at the top. The lounge at the bow was large and comfortable with a well-stocked bar with enough bartenders to keep us all happy. Evening entertainment was always fun and the discussions were timely and informative. There was never a reason to spend time in my cabin (except to sleep).
The Dining Room at the stern was served by a small galley run by 3 Chefs, 2 Cooks, a Pastry man and 2 Kitchen Stewards. The meals they produced were simply amazing, artfully plated and always prepared to perfection. They were delivered by waiters whose skills and competence made every sitting a successful one. My first cruise with Grand Circle, Paris to Normandy on the Seine. The time on the ship was exemplary. Extremely well organized, food was beyond delicious, EVERY staff person seemed to be there to meet our every need with a smile. Our Program Director for the pre trip and cruise was well-informed, organized, and lovely. It seemed that they all wanted us to have the very best experience possible. Unfortunately, that was not true for the post trip. It was disorganized, we were moved to an old hotel in a less than savory area, with a guide that was unfamiliar with the area, and did not seem to care whether we were making our way or not. It was exactly the opposite of the cruise, and left a very bad taste in everyone's mouth for the last days of our trip. Such a sad way to end an otherwise lovely cruise.

This was my first cruise on Grand Circle which was recommended by friends who are former travelers as an educator's cruise line. Our ship River Harmony was extremely clean and nice size with 144 passengers. The staff on ship was amazing and attentive especially those in the dining rooms. But in general, all crew members would get 5 stars from me for friendliness and a job well done. Cuisine was quite delicious and interesting menus daily with choices at each meal.
The two cities that had local guides, Ghent and Kinderdijk, were very knowledgeable and first rate! The Discovery Series event -a Home visit- was delightful and quite enjoyable. I wish the address or email of our hostess would have been provided for a follow up "Thank You" note. Tips were well explained in advance so no hidden charges. I appreciated that I could get the correct currency for the staff and guide in advance.
Issues -. Before the trip my luggage tag and itinerary according to the timeline did not arrive on time.. Luckily my friend checked to see if I had received my package as she already had. Being a little worried I had to call two times in 2 different weeks before it was finally sent Fed Express. Thankfully, due to my persistence it came on time. The biggest issues was I did not get what was advertised and what I paid for.
Day two was advertised "arrive in Brussels." We did arrive in Brussels at the airport...no city/nor sign of Brussels and we were advised not to go into Brussels on our own. This was something that was important to me to choose this particular itinerary as I wanted a day or at least a few hours in the City. The trip was also advertised to spend time in Amsterdam. Day days 9-12. We never saw Amsterdam! It was King's Day. It comes every year the same time...like the Fourth of July. A very patriotic day. Our welcome letter even suggested for us to bring something orange to wear to celebrate and show support! This day was not a surprise and yet.. we could not dock nor visit any of the city due to the celebration. Besides the tulips, and Brussels this was of of my main reason to book this trip.
I can understand two of the city tours were cut short due to rain. But on top of that three days with no Amsterdam???? A company whose business is touring would surely know the countries they visit and would plan accordingly. I did respond to Grand Circle survey when we returned home about my disappointments with the cruise. Even more disappointing was the lack of any response from Grand Circle which was 3 weeks ago. However they did manage to send me a request to donate to their Foundation.. I was soooo disappointed with this cruise as I had hoped to do another river cruise of the great rivers of Europe.

I just returned from the Rhone River trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our director, Lionel was the best. He was very informative about all of the places we visited, Being from France, he had very good English speaking skills with humor and compassion for our small group of 39 people. On our trip from Nice to the MS Chanson we stopped at the cemetery of American soldiers who fought in a battle with makeshift gliders and didn’t make it. We boarded the ship in Aries. This was a small boat newly decorated in elegant fabrics with gold trim. The room was small with a large window but we were so busy that it didn’t spend a lot of time in our room. The staff was excellent and very accommodating to our needs.
The cruise down the Rhone was beautiful and we saw many hillsides with vineyards planted. We meet 3 couples from our Southern states and always sat together for our meals. I have taken eight Overseas Adventure Travel trips and loved them all -- from Vietnam to Machu Picchu and Nepal. So when I received the brochure for the Grand Circle Danube River Cruise, I was delighted. Something different, going through new and interesting places. What a disaster! Starting with the flight by an Irish airline whose name I can't remember, that gave me about two inches of leg space, to inedible food, we arrived in Prague.
The hotel was beautiful and the food was good, but we didn't get to the boat for three days. The boat itself was charming, but there were about 160 other passengers crammed into it. This was a big disappointment as the OAT trips had a maximum of 16 other travelers, much more conducive to fostering friendships. As for the itinerary, we spent about 2-3 hours per day exploring the cities we visited, and the rest of the time sitting on the boat. Our Tour Director was wonderful and helpful and responded to all our concerns. But I will never take another Grand Circle Tour again. In fact, I'm wondering about OAT now.

I couldn’t have been more pleased with my recent trip to Belgium and Holland on Grand Circle Cruise Lines. Our air connects were seamless. We were met by a delightful young lady who directed us to a small van where we were transported to our hotel in Bruges. The hotel was five star as far I was concerned. Centrally located to the historic part of the city. We met our travel program director that evening. Bob ** was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the city, friendly, funny, and just a delight. From Bruge we traveled to Ghent and Antwerp.
The accommodations on the River Harmony were gracious. We had plenty of room to unpack all our things and put our suitcases out of site. That’s one of the best features of a riverboat cruise… you only have to unpack once! My roommate and I met some delightful ladies on the trip that we ended up eating with and spending time together. The meals on the boat offered a wide variety of choices at each seating. The waiters and waitresses couldn’t have been more friendly. We loved chatting with them and learning about their home countries. I was particularly taken with Bob’s knowledge of the history of all the cities we visited. One special thing Bob did was to arrange reservations for my daughter and her family who just happened to be in Delft the same day we were. I do so appreciated his kindness. And speaking of kindness, we witnessed a person from another tour group take a fall from her bike.
Bob rushed over to assist her!!! My roommate and I appreciated the free time we were given each day to explore on our on. We always had maps and suggestions from the programs directors of special sites or shops we might want to visit. One thing I also appreciated was we were never “forced” to do anything, but encouraged to do what we thought would be of the most interest to us. Bob was always very clear about times and places we had to meet the group to head back to the boat.
Another feature of Grand Circle that I really enjoy are the home visits. We had a delightful visit with a lovely Dutch lady who treated us to coffee and cookies and shared interesting tidbits about her life in Holland. This was my third Grand Circle Cruise. I would definitely choose GCT to travel again. There were three highlights of the trip among numerous memorable explorations. Seeing Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child in Bruges, the Ghent Altarpiece, and of course the Keukenhof Gardens were truly inspiring. The only disappointment we had was not being able to visit Amsterdam due to the King’s birthday. Had we know that, I’m pretty sure we would have signed up for the post-trip to Amsterdam. It was an amazing experience and I’m so glad we made the choice to travel with GC again!!

There was one Tour Director for the three-day pre-trip in Paris and three Tour Directors on the cruise. Everyone, from the crew who met us at the airport to the Tour Directors to the boat crew, housekeepers and servers on the boat, did everything they could to make our trip trouble-free and enjoyable. The meals on the boat were especially well-prepared and tasty with superb presentation. We met some new friends and very much enjoyed the "Seine: Paris to Normandy" tour and cruise.

This is my fifth Grand Circle Cruise and I hope to do many more. I have stayed with this company because they know what travelers want and expect in their travels. Our guide Edward was excellent, he listened to our needs and was very helpful. The side trips that were included were excellent. Our post trip to Italy, lead by Rachel was excellent! Grand Circle Cruise Lines have got it right. Also I have done seven trips with Overseas Adventure Travel which are smaller excellent trips. You can't go wrong with this company.

This was the first trip with Grand Circle Travel. Since we were the only Canadians on the trip, we assume that they do not market heavily to Canadians. We had never heard of the company but came across a great offer on Travelzoo. We had never taken a guided tour as we were concerned that there would be pressure to participate in all the planned activities. However there was not. We were free to do as we chose - no pressure, just support with maps and suggestions. Our experience was excellent. All arrangements, from the flights, bus/train travel and transfers, off-site tours and meals, to the hotel accommodations were tightly managed. Our program leader - Laurige - was excellent. Very helpful, interesting and well-versed on the attractions of the tour.
The cruise ship - the M/S Chanson - was lovely. I have never been on a small ship but enjoyed the ambiance. Our cabin was well appointed. Upon our arrival there was even a bottle of distilled water in the cabin as I had mentioned in the pre-trip paperwork that I use a CPAP. The crew was professional, polite, yet friendly, and always working away at some task. Everyone was always smiling. The food....oh the food....tasty with lots of variety and options. I enjoyed the variety of the free wines that were available at the bar.
The daily programmes with the menus of the day and the upcoming activities were appreciated. We enjoyed the evening entertainment that was arranged. My husband and I used the games that were provided in the lounge. I felt that we received excellent value for the cost. I am definitely going to plan another trip with Grand Circle. Highly recommended.

Accommodations were great. I had a cabin with a balcony. The crew was fantastic. They were always eager to help any way they could. The program director was the best ever. I loved the nightly schedules, maps, and menus we got for the next days' events and meals. There was impending bad weather so the captain made the decision to skip one port and sail straight to another. They more than made up for what we missed at the skipped port(s) by motor coaching us to even better excursions. Safety should be first and it definitely was with our captain. I would take another Grand Circle cruise in a heartbeat. It was a once in a lifetime and very memorable experience.

This was my third Grand Circle River Cruise in two years and I was very satisfied. The River Chandon is a lovely small ship made to look old with brass finishings. The staff was wonderful, the food was wonderful and the tours were good. I have nothing to compare them with. Our Program Director was very personable and tried to make sure we were happy. I was impressed. We flew to Nice and were supposed to board the ship but because of recent rains, the river was swollen and all ships were stopped upstream. We boarded a bus for a couple of days and Grand Circle actually went out of their way to be accommodating. Not enough time on the ship but they did the best they could.
Our guide kept us informed to circumstances and we got a couple of extra stops. The trip to the bull farm in Camarque was wonderful and we had lunch at their lovely restaurant. I'm glad I was in Paris in November (on the Seine trip) because it is all torn up getting ready for the Olympics. We had a boat ride on the Seine in lieu of a city tour and a nice guided tour in the Latin Quarter. In the future, I would prefer to have my flights scheduled early on departure day and late coming home. We missed two full days that some other passengers were able to use a half day. I'm still waiting for my refund of $349 for the insurance I said I didn't want but was charged for.

We traveled in a group of 7 family members with Grand Circle to Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary. 5 days in Poland in very nice hotels and 12 days on a ship with about 130 other passengers cruising and stopping at ports along the Danube. Sensory Overload is how I would describe the trip…in a good way. We participated in almost all activities from talks presented by tour guides and locals on the ship to bus rides into towns for walking tours, visits to palaces and castles, musical concert by an outrageously good pianist ($100 extra per person) and a concert by 3 violinists, a cello, a string bass, a flautist, a clarinet, drummer and pianist. ($ 100 per person extra). Also outrageously good. I don’t even care for classical music but enjoyed both concerts immensely. To my surprise, the latter concert also had opera singers and dancers…all wonderful!
The tour guides were constantly talking about the history of the places we visited (I probably have forgotten 90% of what they said) and in each location they had a local tour guide show us around and give us MORE history. WOW!! You can choose to opt out of any and all experiences you wish but we did almost everything. I think my wife and I had a total of 2 hours just sitting and doing nothing but relaxing ( except for bed time). All tour guides were excellent in my opinion. Informative, knowledgeable, and super friendly. The food was all good, but not spectacular. The wait staff…excellent! For me, the whole experience was super duper sensory overload…again, in a very good way.

Took the 8 day December River cruise. When the water level became too high and prevented our river ship from continuing on the Danube, GCT transported us by bus to another river ship docked in Passau. From that point, 140 passengers completed the itinerary each day by bus and returned to the ship for our accommodations and meals. For the last night GCT booked a hotel in Nuremberg to facilitate easy access to airport departures. GCT has been the best organized and truly customer focused travel company I have experienced. Reason why I have booked my upcoming 14th trip!

We were initially very happy to go on a cruise with Grand Circle in November 2023 on their Romantic Blue Danube: Budapest to Prague cruise. We were very excited, we have several family members and friends who are “Inner Circle” members of Grand Circle and they have raved about their experience. When everything is going “to plan” Grand Circle is great, but we unfortunately found out that if you have an issue they are terrible! This was on many levels and not just one person so it leads me to believe that it is a system wide issue.
My first red flag was that we bought travel insurance through GCT with 10 days to review and we canceled the insurance that should have resulted in a $398 credit. That was back in October - it is now December and I have called no less than 5 times and each time they tell me it will be sent - it has not been sent. Looking at the other reviews here, it seems that you absolutely cannot get a refund back as they will keep stonewalling you and keep your money. Even showing invoices that no longer show your credit. Luckily I kept the initial copy showing the credit because I cannot find it now.
If you have an issue during a trip - they will not protect or support their passengers - In short - my wife was attacked by another passenger during one of our outings. The attacker was allowed to roam freely aboard the ship, and only when we and other passengers had complained did they disembark this person. We were discouraged from going to the police and told that there was no local hospital (however, I later found out there was one) so we were forced to wait until the next day at the next port for my wife to get medical attention.
Since the other passenger drew blood, my wife needed to get medical help plus x-rays and bloodwork done. The captain claimed they could not and did not confine the other passenger to quarters and we were told we could stay in our own room if we did not feel safe! Other passengers also did not feel safe with this person on board and we had to form our own safety circle with other passengers - Grand Circle did not ensure this.
We called the home office several times even from the trip to try to get some answers and even calling the Boston office - we were stonewalled. Other passengers were told that if they needed a doctor, they could call a doctor on board, while we were given a slip of paper with the phone number for a taxi and the address of a local hospital and once we got there, it was closed and not open that day. We then had to navigate in a foreign city (Linz) to find a hospital that was open and with the aid of google translate get medical help - so much for having local guides and language translators to help!
We were told not to talk about the incident to other passengers even if they were now at risk from the attacker. We were told that the home office would follow up with us - surprise - they haven’t. I have emailed and called and emailed and…..nothing! I think they just will stonewall us until we give up hope. So, unless you want to risk your personal safety and get shafted of your money at the same time - I strongly avoid traveling with Grand Circle.

This was the Grand Circle River Cruise from Paris to Niece. This is the 8th Grand Circle (GC) river cruise I have done. I have done one Viking river cruise. The good: The ship is slightly smaller than the other GC ships I have taken, and was superb. The staff is excellent and highly professional. The food was as good, if not better than I remember, and served beautifully. Coffee is complimentary and available 24 hours a day. Soft drinks are commentary and available when the bar is open. I think draft beer was also, but I’m not sure. Wine and draft beer at dinner were commentary as well. The hotel manager, our room attendant, and restaurant manager were more than excellent at their jobs.
• Viviers – I’m not sure this is even in guidebooks. It is a small town that seems to be unchanged by time. Unfortunately, many of the shops and stores are boarded up as the world has bypassed the town. Well worth seeing.
• The locally owned bull farm in the Camargue. I suspect that many tourists to the area would never see this farm, or the gardians, like our cowboys. Not to be missed.
The not-so-good:• The 13-day trip includes 2 travel days, so the trip is actually 11 days in France. There are two hotel nights at the beginning and the end of the trip so the time on the ship is actually 7 days. I think that the river cruises where you fly in, go to the ship, and then at the end go from the ship to the airport are a better experience. I suspect that the amount of what is available on this river is a limitation.
• The time in Paris could be reworked to be better. The number of attractions in Paris is astonishing. We saw only a tiny fraction.

George, thank you for your loyalty over the years! We're very glad to hear that you have enjoyed your cruises with us. We will share your concerns and recommendations with our regional team.

Recently cruised the Rhine and Mosel Rivers and had great service, great food, a great Tour Director, and lots of fun. Our cabin was always ship-shape. Our daily tours with Tim included lots of history and background and were delightfully not crowded at the beginning of November. We saw lots of Christmas decorations and booths going up for the coming Christmas Markets. We expected lots of rain, but had just a few showers with 1 day of rain.
This was my 11th GCT/OAT trip and they adjusted to the events wonderfully, as usual. On our really rainy day when we were up the Mosel, the good Captain left quickly when all were aboard from Luxembourg. We reached the Rhine before the river rose too high to get under bridges, tied up in Salzburg (bonus city) and they bussed us back to Cochem castle. In Bernkastel we happened to be there for a village fair with lots of costumes and music. If you didn't visit Marksburg Castle, several roamed around on electric bikes. As "mature" adults, a few passengers had health issues and were taken to nearby facilities as needed. Only one had to leave the trip. I enjoyed our morning walks with more steps to record.
I had taken the same trip 10 years ago and this was even better. They added a visit to Riquewihr, a 16th century medieval village outside Strasbourg, France. Interesting and great shops! We used to have a buffet breakfast and lunch, now it's a full lunch with a salad bar. The food and wine were excellent. The quizzes and evening music, skits, and talks were good after a long day. We dined on board most of the time. We had Afternoon Tea at a local home in Speyer; it's always interesting to see how Europeans homes and customs differ. Note the reservations staff is back to pre-covid levels, with fewer delays. Great time! Great trip!

We went on the "Romance of the Rhine and Mosel" River Cruise in Fall 2023. The food was five star and thoughtfully planned to make each meal perfect. I wanted to bring the chef home with me. The wait staff was incredibly attentive and lots of fun. The activities at the ports-of-call were interesting and varied. I loved seeing and tasting how Black Forest cake was made (in the Black Forest). The tour had a good amount of activities and meals included. This was my third trip with Grand Circle, and I have been very pleased with all of them. With this trip, my only complaint is with the call center. I requested some minor clerical changes to my reservation several times, but everything was not corrected. My wife and I took this same adventure with GCT in 2016 and it was wonderful. In 2023 we did it again to try to relive the '16 experience. When final documents arrived all hotels had been changed. Now hotels we're not located conveniently to sites. In Taormina hotel was in a hole 20 minute steep uphill walk (at least) to Corso Umberto (old historic city). We were at the mercy of GCT logistics. Wasted our vacation time waiting on vans and buses. Terrible location - Hotel Diodoro is a tired old hotel, originally built ~1898. I'm talking really tired.
Next stop Siracusa/Ortigia. The hotel was the resort Minareto. Relatively new facility but in the middle of nowhere, 20 - 30 minute ride to historic Ortigia. Virtually held hostage by GCT logistics to get back & forth to historic Ortigia, only thing worth visiting while in Siracusa. Again, GCT was wasting our valuable vacation time to satisfy their financial interests. BTW, a simple cocktail at Minareto, a gin and tonic, was €30. You don't even pay that at a hotel in NYC, LA, San Fran, or DC. It is because there is nothing else in the area of that resort. Hotels & locations got worse as we went on.
Next stop Agrigento. Again, hotel in the suburbs of the new city Agrigento, Colleverde Park Hotel. Tired old hotel. Nothing really to walk to. A couple of mediocre pizza joints. A hotel captive again. Cocktails reasonable at the hotel because you could go across the street and have something at one of the pizza places. And finally, Palermo. The Hotel Vecchio Borgo. In the middle of the oldest of Palermo neighborhoods, Vecchio Borgo. It really is a slum. Garbage and litter everywhere. Did not feel safe walking around during the day let alone in the dark. Hotel had no real place you could sit and relax. No patio, garden, pool. They had a very small sitting area in the "lobby" which also served as the hotel "bar". HA! "Bar". 1st night I requested a Negroni. The "bartender", aka the lobby check in attendant concocted the "Negroni" of Campari, gin and, wait for it, Jack Daniels. All in all an evil tasting mixture.
2nd night I just requested a Campari & Soda over ice. Whoops, "we don't have any ice". For two nights in a row trying to sleep was near impossible. Loud mufflers, loud boom boxes in cars & on ebikes. Lots of fireworks. Noise everywhere. Filth everywhere in the streets. Dog land mines everywhere. This has been the 12th time we have travelled with GCT. This time the bait and switch game has been too much. Done with GCT. Caveat Emptor!!

Recently cruised with GCT and they failed to comply with their stated regulations regarding Covid protocols. Temperatures of travelers were NEVER taken on the cruise, and, although ship was approximately 1/2 full, only approximately 1/2 of the tables were being utilized. That doesn't make sense since using them all would have limited the number of passengers occupying them, thus limiting exposure. My wife and I would have been able to have a table to ourselves, not because we are anti-social, but because we would have been safer. In addition, a local restaurant lunch was packed full of passengers with food being served right under their noses.
Two stars ONLY because of the excellent treatment we were given by our program directors both during the cruise and after I contracted Covid. Yes, my wife and I had to leave mid-way through the cruise and were quarantined for 8 days at a hotel. Quite frankly, I don't know if I was infected by other passengers (there were others on the same cruise that came down with Covid before I did) or if I infected others. Surely taking temperatures and separating tables would have helped tremendously.

Thank you for your candid review. GCT takes feedback from its customers very seriously and we are sorry to learn of your unfortunate experience. We will be sure to share your experience with our executive team.

We have just returned from our 6th, and probably last, Grand Circle tour. They have provided great service in the past, but this tour was bad. The Tour guide read from a book, did little guiding on site and was mainly interested in getting us back on the bus. It felt like a school tour where I had the least interested parent supervising me. Our buses had problems; the drivers were pulled from retirement and were unfamiliar with the vehicles. We ran off the road and almost flipped--and Grand Circle did NOTHING. Poor food, poor guidance and no involvement from the guide or the Company.
Completely different, and highly disappointing, from previous trips. I read that the company is being sold to some type of Holding Company--that may explain it. The main thing I have to say to others is: There are many tour Companies out there, now is the time to dismiss GCT and try someone else. I cannot force any reason they would improve from this point. I am disappointed, disgruntled and dissatisfied; I didnt spend money to get this treatment; I could have done better on my own!

I booked a river cruise with GCT because their COVID protocols were strong ... on paper. Not only did GCT require vaccination, including a booster, paperwork sent to me in my final packet, one week before departure, stated GCT policy "G.C.C.L requires all travelers wear facemasks when in public spaces while on board the ship and/or while traveling in a coach bus." This company policy was the reason I booked with them in the first place, because, as we all know, vaccinations may keep one out of the hospital but does NOT keep one from contracting COVID.
Two days before departure, it was a call from the Program Director in Romania who informed me that masks were no longer required. And this information was only transmitted because I raised the subject. He tried to justify the change as one of a country change but I read him the GCT policy which I received in writing as part of my final trip documents. I received no corrected, printed information, no email, no telephone call, informing me of GCT's policy change. It's equivalent to changing a flight schedule and not informing the ticketed passenger.
In a telephone call to GCT I was told the company policy had changed but the paperwork had not been updated. They refuse to accept their responsibility to inform me, in order to allow me to make the decision regarding my exposure. An offer of a certificate for future travel with a company I no longer trust is unacceptable. I feel like I was duped by a bait and switch and wonder how many others were caught in the same scheme. I feel I was defrauded and the company has been unethical in their dealings.

Absolutely the worst travel agency in the business… the service is virtually nonexistent and if you need to contact them, be prepared to spend hours listening to their recorded music after which the line will probably go dead. They tied up over $10,000 of our money on a trip they canceled because the cruise line they offered us had Russian links. And then it took them over 3 months to give us back our money which they did only after numerous phone call attempts and letters to management. So I called again but was told we also were overcharged $100 for travel insurance and $200 for the airline portion of the tour. We were once again assured that a refund would be issued. It has not and now when I call they leave me on hold for over 3 hours a call and do not answer. As they now owe us $1,200 I cannot give up but would like to warn others.

They then said refunds were not an option. I felt pressured to rebook another trip so I rebooked a trip to the Panama Canal for Jan. 2021. Travel was not advised so I cancelled that. Hated to lose my money so booked a trip to Alaska for August 2022 thinking it would be safe to travel by then. Now I have some health issues and don't feel safe to travel. I spoke to Patrick at the Overseas Adventure Travel arm of Grand Circle Travel and he assured me that after deducting a $300 cancelation fee, I would get the remaining refund of $1149.00 credited to my credit card within 30 days. That would have been on 1/22/2022. No Refund to date (2/4/2022). I have written via email twice to their support email account - no response. I have spent over 5 hours on hold without making contact. No refund, no communication except for a huge thick catalogue of future tour options. Why would I consider that? Anyway, just a cautionary tale for those thinking of booking a trip with either company. I sure wouldn't.

I realize this is a tough time for everyone in the travel business and it is a stressful time for all. However, I am very disappointed in the cancellation policy. We are scheduled to go to Ireland on 10/1. CDC and State Department have put Ireland on a red alert (do not travel) yet the tour is going on. As I understand from your customer service agents, options to cancel are limited. We just want a full-refund or price protection for the future trip. We have reluctantly booked a trip for 9 May 2022. However, I can't believe that they want to charge a loyal customer $100 change fee and changes in airfare. My mother has travelled with GCT many times. Isn't our loyalty worth this small amount of money?

At the time of the booking, I was in constant contact with a regional adventure counselor and the reservation process went smoothly (including the transmission of funds for my deposit and for the Travel Protection Plan). The counselor submitted a waiver request for a $100 certificate that is scheduled to expire 9/6/2021 so that it could be applied to the reservation.
For the past 3 days, I have tried to contact OAT for a status update via 3 different phone numbers. Each phone number has a prerecorded message that wait times are up to 2 hours. On 7/28/2021, I waited on hold for over 2 hours before giving up. On 7/29/2021, I waited on hold for over 3 hours before giving up. A group of seniors, of which I am included, reserved a river cruise on December 30, 2019. We placed a $500 deposit and $499 Allianz insurance policy. We were told we could cancel for any reason. I was paying for 2 friends to accompany me as I suffer from Stage 4 lung cancer. Over the next 3 months, one friend suffered a heart attack with a subsequent unstable heart condition and the other friend suffered an orthopedic injury that her doctor advised would make walking very uncertain.
The pandemic hit soon after and my oncologist advised that I not travel overseas due to my compromised immune system. We finally agreed to cancel or reservations on April 15th. We called Grand Circle Travel and were advised to file a claim in order to get a refund less a service fee. I asked about the insurance and was told that I must file a claim for all 3 of us. I followed what I was told and the disastrous results followed. Both friends received a $300 refund from GCT and I received a $300 voucher! After vigorous fighting, I received my $300 refund in July. However, I was in constant communication with Allianz insurance.
After reviewing my situation with all medical documentation, they finally told me that although I had filed a claim, they would reimburse me $499 per person, to my credit card, as my situation warranted this money as I was "INCORRECTLY ADVISED" by GCT to even file a claim! You see, by filing a claim, that makes you ineligible to retrieve your insurance premiums!
When a month went by and I did not receive the $1497 refund, I contacted GCT who informed me that I would NOT receive the money as I had filed the claim! I called back the manager at Allianz who told me that they had in fact refunded GCT the $499 per person to be refunded to me the month prior! I called back GCT who still refused to return the monies back to me standing on principle that I had filed a claim! When I told them that THEY told me to file the claim and had I been properly informed that by doing so, I would lose my insurance premiums, they began double-talking and recanting.
Bottom line, they were unethically withholding my refund from Allianz---and still do so to this day! A manager got on the line with me and promised to get back to me within days. I have yet to hear a word!! This company is despicable, deceptive, unethical and the worst travel experience I have ever dealt with! It is most likely the last travel experience I will ever have so I strongly advise everyone NOT to use them for your dream vacation as they are only interested in stealing your dreams! I have been lied to, conned and swindled. Please don't let this happen to you!

Earlier I wrote a review about GCT and how after two months I still had not received a refund for a cancelled trip. I was notified by GCT on July 2nd the refund was being credited to my credit card. This after the State Attorney General's Office and State Insurance commission contacted them. I was unhappy with the delay, however GCT and OAT trips have been great trips, especially OAT rank quite high in our many trips. Up until the fight to get a refund, my wife and I have been happy with the company and when things settle down would recommend them for a great travel experience.

I have been trying for 2 months to get a refund for a trip GCT cancelled and have been stonewalled. My wife and I are 11 time travelers with GCT/OAT. We prepaid $12,000 for a May 2020 river cruise. We received notice on April 2, 2020 from Allianze Insurance CO. that GCT would give us a refund for the policy. In addition the GCT website for our account showed we were due a refund for the trip. That was removed and now shows a reservation for a trip in June 2021 which we did not ask for. I recommend everyone with a denied refund request to contact the Federal Trade Commission, your state insurance commission and your state attorney general. Their websites make it easy to file a complaint.

We have made 14 trips with OAT/GCT and were about to take our 15th trip in March when COVID 19 interfered. We expected Grand Circle to cancel this trip to Italy, but as the departure drew near they continued to assure us it was safe, but since we are well past the age considered most in danger from the virus, we made the decision to cancel. They did cancel later. We were assured that the insurance was for any cancellation and Grand Circle advised us to file a claim with the insurance company and we would hear from them quickly. We did file and requested a refund check then waited to hear. Filed on Feb. 29 and Travel Insurance Company replied on March 8 that they had reviewed and approved our claim and we should hear from GCT about payment.
We finally received a Travel Voucher on 3/20/2020 that was issued 3/10/2020 which expires 3/10/2021 and cannot be extended. Since then we have contacted them several times and gotten mixed messages and always advised to call the insurance company. Back and forth we go. As I said we have traveled numerous times with this company and been very satisfied in the past, however we had never had to cancel or had any claims on the insurance that we purchased through them. Is this how they treat their loyal customers?
Here is my main complaint: no one knows when or if it will be safe to travel again, we do not know if we will be able on a personal level to make another trip in the future, and what do they do with all the money collected for various trips in the meantime? There were 40 people on our tour and each paid approximately $3500 plus insurance. If my math is correct that is $140,000. they collected for just this trip and we know they had to cancel dozens if not hundred of trips. If the insurance company reimbursed them that is a lot of money in their coffers and even after overhead expense they must have a large amount that may or may not ever be used.
I imagine they were able to cancel airline tickets and get a refund which they did not passed on. I sympathize with the seriousness of their situation, but they are certainly not being proactive for their travelers. We truly hope that we will be able to use this voucher before the expiration date and that they do not go out of business before we do, but will not travel with them again otherwise.

After paying for the trip I was asked to come up with more money because of a change in the Euro. I found out that the change had taken place well before I made my payment but had never been informed of the price change. After our arrival in Rome, everything changed as far as quality was concerned. We (primarily seniors) were put on a dilapidated bus that had no emergency rest room. Parts of the seats were falling apart. The food, except for a farm dinner, was only mediocre and almost all of the side trips were extra.
What was really upsetting was, when we got home, I wrote a lengthy letter to the president of GCT describing all the problems we had on the trip. I was answered by an obvious form letter from some clerk. When I tried to call them to discuss the problems I was shunted to a call taker in India who could care less about my problems. Each of these situations was handled professionally, we were constantly updated on the situations and they the company went out of the way to make sure everyone was satisfied. Every one of our Program Directors have been excellent and the learning and discovery experiences, for which GCT and OATs are known, have been exceptional. I have three trips planned with them this year and every one of them has been handled to my satisfaction.
I have seen this website before and have been skeptical of the reviews. It seems that many of the negative reviews are due to actions of the reviewers who failed to take out insurance or did not understand that floods, too high or too low river levels, or illness and strikes are not within the control of the corporation. My experiences could not have been handled any better. It is common nature for people to write evaluations when they are dissatisfied. When the overall evaluation of a company is based on the opinions of the minority of travelers who are negative, the results do not reflect the overall experiences of thousands of travelers. I have been fighting with them for 4 months. They keep asking for more information. Called OAT three separate times for help. They said my claim is in their records and is valid. I was told I'd have to take the highest cabin category since I requested to be paired with another female. Mistake #1. I was not told that there was a fee for the roommate matching service. Mistake #2. It's called a ripoff. I canceled my reservation.

I am compelled to review the river cruise which Shelli reviewed. I was on the same exact cruise and met Shelli. She was angry when she got on the boat because the river was low. She neglected to report that GCT did all they could to mitigate the situation. After all, they cannot control the river level. They put all the passengers up in very nice hotels and provided our meals while there. They hired first class motor coaches to transport us. They threw in an excursion to Rothenburg which had been an option costing $100. They had open bars a couple of times AND they gave every passenger a credit of $250 towards another river cruise.
Furthermore, Shelli reported that we did not cruise in the Rhine which is not true. GCT hired a local boat to take us on the most scenic part of the Rhine River. They did everything in their power to accommodate us. She was mad, as she told me, because she called two weeks before sailing and wanted a refund which was denied. I have traveled seven times with GCT/OAT and my husband and I think they do an outstanding job. They are our only travel company in Europe. We have had the most outstanding tour guides. Actually, I am currently in Montecatini, Italy as I write this review with a fantastic Grand Circle tour guided by Simone - he is amazing! We believe that the value is outstanding, the home visits are so enriching and the location of our hotels, which are always centrally located, is terrific. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND GRAND CIRCLE TRAVEL AND OVERSEAS ADVENTURE TRAVEL. I’m really surprised at the negative reviews.

Just returned from a Great Rivers Cruise. It really was a bus trip that we did not sign up for. Most terrible experience. We were supposed to sail on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers. Looking forward to a relaxing boat trip, but instead we were put in hotels for 3 nights and bussed to finally meet the ship. Never cruised the Rhine- the highlight of the trip. After a few days on ship 1 we were again bussed and required to actually change to ship 2. The real problem is that GCT knew all about these problems well in advance and LIED to us when asked for info before departing!!! They have made no attempt to compensate us, other than to offer a ridiculously low amount to use as a credit toward a future trip with them. You have got to be kidding- spend thousands of dollars more with them. I can't stress how unethical this company is. STAY AWAY!!!

We took Crossroads of the Adriatic which was a tour given by OAT, their small group division. We are experienced travelers and this was probably our favorite trip. Although we only used them once we know many people who use this as their company of choice. In terms of complaints about not refunding money for last minute cancelations due to injury or illness, this is why we always take out travel insurance. It does not have to be affiliated with the tour company but should be obtained shortly after booking so it will cover pre-existing conditions.

In 1916 we were scheduled to take an extended tour Essence of the Elbe: Berlin to Prague with Grand Circle Cruise line. Of interest we known as Inner Circle members because of the number of trips we had taken. A week before we were scheduled to start the journey my husband completely separated his quadriceps tendon from the knee, necessitating emergency surgery with a 3-6 month recovery. I admit we did not take out travel insurance. In the past we paid for the insurance at a high premium and never had to use it.
The company was unsympathetic to our plight. As a matter of fact some of the people I spoke with on the phone were less than helpful. The best they would come up was a refund of 600$ towards another trip. So much for their humanitarian efforts all around the globe. Needless to say we will never travel with this company again. In the end I had to fight to get a note via of email stating we had not used the credit. Would not recommend this company ever again. NO STARS TO GRAND CIRCLE!

My first trip with Grand Circle was five years ago, and it was delightful. Took their river cruise from Paris to the south of France. The itinerary was fascinating, the guides were mostly excellent, the food was delicious - it was a great trip. We had some lousy weather, but c'est la vie. We took all the optional excursions except Giverny, and were blown away by how interesting they were.
The next trip was two weeks on the Rhine and Moselle from Antwerp to Switzerland. GCT creates interesting itineraries that include culture, history, art and architecture. On the cruise trips, almost all meals are included, and they are excellent. There are always choices - fish, meat or vegetarian - and always the option to have salmon or hamburger if none of the choices are appealing. Our guide was good, but not great.
Since then, we took the Chile and Argentina trip which made us fall in love with South America. Our guides there were outstanding. The Norway and Finland trip we took was great, as well, with a super guide. Have gone on two OAT trips since - one to Peru (my favorite all-time trip) and one to Morocco (my second favorite). I love the OAT experience with the small groups (max 16) which allows for getting to know the guides and other passengers more.
These trips are more immersive in the culture, and we saw a broad swathe of the people, not just the tourist spots. The river cruises have an element of luxury that the OAT trips don't have, but both are wonderful in their own way. I've travelled with other companies, and OAT is by far our favorite. Some companies are chintzy on the included meals, or don't provide as many. Have found Grand Circle to be great trips for a better value than some others. Highly recommend!

All have been quite magnificent, for on each one the cost was to my liking; the hotels comfortable and varied in decor and architecture. Some have been rather elegant, and all of my guides, the individual who makes the trip to be enjoyable or not as well as my traveling companions, have made my traveling experiences with Grand Circle Travel memorable and recommendable. I feel sorry for those travelers who had negative travel experiences with this company that received five huge stars from me on each of my SIX trips, the last being in 2014.

Just finished a Christmas Markets tour with Grand Circle Travel in Germany in December. Was disgusted when our tour guide who had us wait in the street while he went inside a shop to purchase **, then came out and held it up a huge rolled ** cigarette proudly for all to see. Just what I wanted to do... spend 9 hours on a plane and thousands of dollars, to watch a GCT tour guide purchase his drugs for the evening. About 5-6 days into the trip, I came down with Influenza A and Bronchitis. Instead, of taking me off the ship to a hospital ER, a doctor who was wearing filthy jeans was brought on board who spoke almost no English.
I spent the rest of the trip (4-5) days, in my cabin with 102-103 fever, extremely sick with the flu that has killed so many this past winter. Once home I went straight to an urgent care where I was diagnosed with Influenza A and Bronchitis. The cabin I was in on the trip had stains on the seating areas, A/C didn't work properly so often I was freezing, and that was before I became sick. Too many problems with the cabin to list them all. Not a good experience and don't plan on taking another GCT River Cruise.

I went on the pre-trip to Japan for this tour. When it was time to leave Japan and fly to China I was informed that I would not be flying on the same fight with everyone else who was on the pre-trip. I would be flying by myself. The tour director said she had contacted the airline and GCT but was unable to get my flight changed. I had booked this trip a year in advance so I'm not sure how this happened. Plus, I was traveling with a friend so I believed that we would be flying on the same flights throughout the trip. The day of the flight I was put on a municipal bus with a driver who did not speak English so I had to make sure I was dropped off at the correct terminal, check-in for the flight and navigate through the airport by myself in a country where few spoke English. When we arrived in China I had to go through immigration alone which was very unnerving. If there had been a problem with my Visa I would have been on my own.
After the trip I noted this situation in the survey GCT requests everyone fill out. I waited a few weeks but did not receive a call from them. When I called GCT they said they did not think it was a problem because I was a seasoned traveler. Even seasoned travelers can have problems with their Visa or navigating a foreign airport. The reason I paid to travel with GCT (this was my 6th trip) was to be with a group, not travel alone. The very least they could have done is gotten a driver who spoke English to take me to the airport. When it was all said and done they gave me a $100 certificate towards another GCT trip. My trip for this year was already paid in full so I could not use the certificate towards that trip. When I asked if they could give me a check they said no but the certificate was good for 3 years.

I canceled nearly a year before the trip was to take place, and all I was requesting was a refund of $300 for the cancellation penalty. (The trip insurance alone, which I also forfeited, cost almost as much.)
After waiting nearly three months for a response I learned I'd get a travel voucher for $300 to use on my next trip in the event. I want to cram myself into an airplane for another trip. The guide and the main tour were for the most part good, but the extension was a waste of time and money with a very unsatisfactory guide, poor hotels in Essaouira and Casablanca, and much longer than necessary bus rides, despite our pleas to go direct to Casablanca, as we only had two hours to explore. On the way to the Casablanca hotel, we were told by our guide we were the last group to stay at that hotel because of the bar next door.
The yelling in the street, car noise and honking went on until 4:30 a.m., and we had airport pickups at 6:15 a.m., so no sleep before our long day of traveling home. The main tour is advertised as 16 days, but the post-trip overlapped by 2 days, so it was not. I also booked following a friend's recommendation and was told I would get a $100 credit that could be used for optional tours on the trip. On returning home and asking for a refund for the very unsatisfactory post-trip, I was told the credit could not be used for optional tours, only for a future tour. Trip Mate, the insurer, will only refund me $300 out of $700! And GC keeps $300 out of the $500 balance. In the end, I will be refunded $200 from GC and $300 from Trip Mate. I receive no consideration for having traveled twice with GC and, again, for canceling more than a year out. I am about to book with Avalon Waterways. There was much grumbling at the news that the riverboat Aria had developed a major problem and we would be transferred to buses and hotels for the remainder of the trip. I had my doubts about traveling to Eastern Europe in the height of summer. I don't do well in hot weather and should have let my instinct rule instead of being guided into a cheaper cruise that smarter people would have avoided at that time of year.
I mostly want in this review to give extremely high marks for the four tour directors who spent at least one completely sleepless night and maybe two arranging for our care once it became obvious that the ship could not be repaired. International travel is loaded with possible obstacles and disappointments. Most of us on Grand Circle are mature people whose backgrounds have a list of setbacks. We should know by now to take them in stride and not take personally when interruptions occur. Stuff happens! Make the best of what is there for you.
The remainder of the trip was not as enjoyable as it would have been had we been able to continue as planned. Grand Circle refunded us 25% of the cost of the interrupted portion of the trip. In addition, they give us generous vouchers for use in a future trip, one of which I have already booked. It's unfortunate that the weather was terribly hot, and it's unfortunate that the ship's generators couldn't handle the power load that caused two of the three generators to fail. In future, I'll limit my European travel to spring and fall, and if the boat breaks again, I'll take advantage of the open bar and getting to see places that I would not have seen from the ship. And may I remember to take my own advice and stay flexible and to meet each travel challenge with an open mind.

This is a great company to go places with IF you can get booked! Once on the road we had no complaints; we traveled both by river cruise and land trips. They are a great value but the booking process they do themselves is no longer working. They should consider outsourcing to a company that has tight controls and can offer some level of customer service, there is no recourse if someone in the call center fouls up like: confirming the start date of a trip in error, sending out advertising for trips that are not available, and advising customers in error who are coordinating single space with doubles. Buyer beware! Do not let time pass when booking travel with this company. Do it all on the day the catalog comes!

The United Kingdom has a lot of nice things to offer- beautiful scenery & architecture, fascinating history & historical sites, quaint villages, bustling big cities. The Grand Circle Tour Directors are always knowledgeable, personable, and manage the groups well. But be prepared - the UK facilities and services are quite different from continental Europe. Hotels don't have air conditioning. This might be okay if the hotel windows opened - but they don't! Or just open 1-2" - insufficient to get fresh air. So the rooms are stuffy. Beds have heavy duvet covers, but no cover sheets, so you cover yourself with more heat - or nothing. Most hotels don't have safe boxes, minibars or fridges, don't have in-room explanation of hotel services, pen and paper, any North American TV channels, or provide bottled water. Most rooms did have DIY tea/coffee service.
The UK food is generally not appealing. Though surrounded by water you will not get seafood meals except for traditional fish & chips which is fresh cod (not a flavorful fish no matter how you prepare it). You will see many sheep in the UK but lamb was never on our menu. Buffet breakfasts were scarce on fresh fruit and offerings were repeated - bangers & mashed, beans, grilled tomatoes, pre-fried eggs. Wines, beer, ales were NOT served with GCT meals. When you want to pee in the UK don't look for a washroom, bathroom, or WC - look for a sign for "toilet" (not to be confused with "To-Let" which will get you an apartment rental).
Travel between stops includes long bus rides often on narrow winding back roads. It would be scenic except that tall vegetation borders the roadway and often obstructs the viewing. The road through the Cotswolds to the west coast was "one that all of the coach drivers don't like" so we were told. That was because it was dangerous - it curved, up and down, involved frequent braking and stopping to allow oncoming vehicles to pass, and took over an hour to our destination. You get glimpses of the countryside but the large bus windows have a reflective material which flashes sunlight and shadow that bounce and reflect making viewing a challenge. The Grand Circle groups are large, about 35 people, so be prepared for movement at the pace of the slowest individual. Potty stops are well-timed but stretch out because of the age and size of the group. At our ages everyone has to pee at every opportunity!
The weather in the UK is variable so it's a gamble whether you will get good or bad. Ours was generally lousy - first hot, then rainy, overcast, dismal. No fault of Grand Circle but about half of our group also got sick with colds and/or flu so that detracted from everyone's enjoyment of the trip. In my opinion this trip tries to cover too much geography in single trip. It results in many short stops and some long coach rides. I think that the trip would be more enjoyable if split into two separate trips - one in London, southern England, and Wales and a second one covering northern England and Scotland. If there had been an OAT offering for a similar UK trip we would've chosen that because of the smaller groups, more vigorous itinerary, and greater ease of group movement but OAT has nothing in the UK. I would recommend this trip but advise future travelers.

Tips for local guides and bus drivers and waiters on included meals are included in the tour price - you only tip the Program Director and maids in the hotels. I have never had a bad experience in a hotel or with their office staff or tour staff. No single supplements except on the river cruises, and you can request a same-sex roommate. They work with you on the air arrangements, and have options if you want to go in early or stay late at the beginning or end of a trip. I feel they are a good value for the money.

Another benefit of traveling with this moderately priced company is the fellow travelers. They are by and large schoolteachers, a lovely and educated group to spend time with. There are many single women as well as couples, and everyone blends and mixes and are inclusive and polite and considerate.
When you travel overseas, be it alone or with a group, you have to be flexible and have a sense of humor. If you're going to enjoy yourself, you have to relax and take things in stride. I think people who are disappointed with GCT and OAT haven't mastered that concept. I have also found Customer Service to be consistently efficient and pleasant. In a recent post to the ConsumerAffairs website, I criticized Grand Circle Travel for what I felt was then not living up to its advertised prices. As it turned out, the advertisement I received was missing a link which listed the dates that were not eligible for the free air offer. Last week I received a call from Grand Circle Quality Control to try to resolve our differences. The trip that I had originally requested was sold out so an alternate trip at a later date was offered in its place. The new trip was more expensive because it fell in the high season. Instead of the Free Air which I thought was available with the previous sailing, Grand Circle offered me Air from Denver at half price.
In addition, they honored the original price and I was given a cabin on deck 3 instead of deck 1 from the previous sailing. Overall I saved considerably more on this new trip than the original offer that, because of a glitch in my computer, I was unable to book. I am awarding Grand Circle 5 stars for their efforts to right a wrong.

I received an e-mail from Grand Circle Travel which inviting me to go on the Romance of the Rhine and Mosel taking advantage of "Free Air and Free Extension". The banner read "Fly free from any U.S. City, Reserve by 1/6/2017 and mention code SAVE DEC". Clicking on the announcement took me to a new page "2017 Romance of the Rhine & Mosel". On this page I selected Denver as my departure city and March to check available departure dates. I then selected "View Available Dates" and a new page appeared. On this page I selected March 15 which was very close to our anniversary date. I also selected Cantata Deck Category F. Pressing continue a new page appeared where I selected "I do not wish to select an extension at this time". The final page included a "Trip summary" which I had e-mailed to me.
To complete the reservation I was asked to call GCT's 800 number. The sales rep at GCT seemed unaware of the "Free Air + free extension" so after a long pause I was asked to email the offer to her. I was then told the offer wasn't available on this trip as GCT would not make any money on the trip. NOWHERE on any of the pages was there any indication that the trip was not available. I followed all the links provided starting with "Fly free from any city" to develop this anniversary trip.
I am extremely disappointed in GCT for what at least appears to be somewhere between "Bad faith" to "Bait and switch". Even if it was an error on GCT's part, great companies usually "bite the bullet", honor the advertisement and then correct the error. Because this offer has been available for some time now, I would find it hard to believe that such an error, if indeed it is one, would not have been corrected by now. Apparently, Grand Circle Travel IS NOT a great company to do business with. A letter of complaint sent to GCT was ignored by the company. Buyer beware.

In 2016 we had what felt like the trip from hell run by the devil itself. This was to have been my birthday celebration trip. On the second day (Sunday) I tripped on a raised cobblestone in the pavement and tumbled to my knees. I suffered no damage whatsoever either to my knees or my clothing, it was just embarrassing. I got up and went on thinking nothing of it.
The tour director, however, went berserk over it until she was distracted by another tour member who fainted and bloodied her head. That night the TD told me I should go home, that I was incapable to do the tour. Later she told my husband that he was unable and should go home (This seemed to be because he walks with an odd gait due to injury in a motor vehicle accident that occurred back in 1959). We both made it clear that we were not interested in leaving the tour and we did not agree that we were not able to continue. The next two days we were harangued repeatedly with messages that we were not wanted. The TD "turned us over to her Rome office" and I was harangued (Tuesday afternoon) with numerous phone calls from women whom I could not understand due to the language barrier and poor connections.
On Tuesday evening we were ordered to come down from our room and informed that we were no longer allowed on the trip, that we would leave for home the following morning, that our original flight home had been cancelled and a new flight arranged for the following morning. We were told that if we refused to go we would not be allowed on the trip, that we would be put out on the street with nowhere to stay and no tickets to get back home. At that threat, we felt we had to give in. We had hardly slept for three nights worrying about what was happening to our trip and the impossible to understand antagonism and hostility of the TD towards us. We were exhausted. We might have tried to go off on our own, making our travels private, but felt unable to do that given that we no longer would have tickets to get back home. Also we don't speak the language and had no experience with making our own travel arrangements in Italy and France.
We were hustled off to the airport where we got a flight to Amsterdam, but the agent said she had no tickets beyond that and we would have to get them in Amsterdam. In Amsterdam there were no tickets for us, no record we were told. I don't know how it was worked out but Delta and KLM made many phone calls on our behalf and finally got us on a plane to Detroit. In Detroit again there were ticket problems, but the agents got them resolved somehow. Two weeks later, at home, I received notice from Delta that it was time to do online check-in on our originally scheduled flight home. I contacted them, explaining that GCT had told us that they cancelled these tickets. Delta then kindly immediately refunded our "economy plus" seating fare we had paid although I don't believe they had to.
Throughout this ordeal I had kept detailed notes. I used these to write a letter of objection to GCT after we returned home. I sent a letter to Harriet Lewis receiving no response from her. After reading off some website complaints of others who have had terrible problems with GCT, I guess I should be grateful that at least we did now just receive a full refund of the money we paid GCT. The man I dealt with in the customer relations department was very courteous and I thought really tried to be helpful.
That does not negate what GCT did to us. I consider their behavior outrageous, abusive and also simply very poor business. They have thrown away two very good customers, people who once were outspoken to others about the good experiences they had with GCT. Our good will is gone as is our continued business. They are "out" the extra airfare to send us home, "out" the price of the trip and didn't have the common sense to follow through on cancelling the flights they said they cancelled. Total incompetence! What the dickens happened to what I think was once a good reputable company???

The wait times, routinely over half an hour to talk to a rep, needs attention. Of course payment calls go through a filter very fast. They need to be pushed to have an automatic callback system for all calls to show some respect for their customer's time and convenience.

We are in the middle of our tour as I type. There has been both good and bad on this trip which is our first experience with Grand Circle and with traveling abroad. Due to the monies we paid and the poor parts of our trip so far this will be our last tour with Grand Circle. Some parts of the tour have been entertaining and enjoyable with excellent service. Others have been disappointing with cheap meals and poor service. The rooms that we have stayed in so far are small and we are currently staying in a room with two twin beds.
One of our two "option" mini tours was very disappointing and the other had very good entertainment with poor service from the food servers. Sitting on the cramped tour bus in the back each time has been painful to say the least and been one of the main reasons not to participate in the "option" mini tours. A separate arrangement was made for golf for my husband and some others. They were told it would cost them $45.00 for 9 holes that would include everything and they had to pay $176.00 each. We are ages 58 and 64. Perhaps this type of traveling is just not for us.

I received an email from Grand Circle Travel advertising a cruise. I clicked on the link and noted the advertised price, under which was the notation "Single Supplement: $0". When I called to book the trip, the single supplement was $1,295. They claimed they made a mistake on the website. I claim it was the old bait-and-switch, enticing me to call in and buy something under false pretenses. They expressed no interest in honoring what they offered. I have traveled with them before; I will never do so again. Beware!!

On this trip we had 3 days in Prague at the Parkhotel which was outside of the city of Prague. Went on a bus trip the next day through the city of Prague with someone I could not understand. We were brought to the hotel. And we're on our own for the rest of time with no way to get back in the city, all we saw was the hotel and a small grocery store. We should had have a hotel in the city. But I guess that would have cut down their profit. Our rest stop was a gas station... That had about 50 little children also at the gas station. The rest of the trip did not get any better. The customer service you dealt with before the trip were not the best. I am sorry to say I did not like anything on this trip. I would advise if you want to take a Blue Danube trip you might try Viking.

I completed my third trip with GC last fall. I have to agree with the comments about sub standard rooms. As a single person I was given the worst room in most of the hotels. We changed hotels 5 times as we worked our way north from Italy. The first hotel room was in the back of the entire hotel (I needed my GPS to find it everyday) overlooking the gardener shack. The room was so small that one day when I overslept I had to order room service. The guy could not even get the cart into the room. My shower was the size of what would be in an RV. When I complained our guide did nothing for over 24 hrs. until I went to the front desk. They showed me another room which was much larger but it overlooked a metal fire escape and a brick wall so I decided to stay where I was. The rest of the travelers had lake views. Single people get the shaft. Esp when there is "free supplement". What a joke.

I have gone on a couple of trips with GCT and they have been fine, as both times we have an organized group of our own, so the tour went on as planned. Early this year, I booked a Danube River Cruise together with another couple for March 22nd, 2016, and paid in full including airfare before the deadline, which is 75 days before the trip. Around the first week of February, which is less than 45 days before the trip, they informed us that the trip has been cancelled even though we had already received all the travel documents from them. The reason for cancellation: insufficient travelers for that trip and they want to combine it with their April tour. Unfortunately, that is the only time we are available to take the trip. We could have booked another tour! GCT had totally disregard the interests of the customers and did not provide any compensation for the cancellation, either as a credit for future tour or whatever.
If the customer had cancelled the tour within 59-30 days of the tour date, they would have been charged 65% of the trip fee according to GCT's cancellation policy. However, GCT seems to feel free to cancel any tour at will without any recourse or compensation to the customers, which appears to be a one way street. They seem to expect the customer to commit to the payment after booking, but yet, they can cancel the trip as they wish. What kind of a company is this? Where is their customer service? I would not deal with this company again! Also, not only did they not refund the customer for their payment immediately after they cancelled their trip, they have to wait till Feb. 19th to issue the refund. What is this? They want to keep the money even though their trip has been cancelled.

I just returned from Burma Irrawaddy river cruise. I want to warn people about several upsetting practices which seem systemic and not just related to this cruise. They are not offering this trip any longer or I would go into more detail but will just state, if they offer it again, don't take it. One thing in general though, they make such a big deal about being single traveler friendly and it is a joke. Not only should they have offered free single supplement but they should have charged half or less if anyone would take the single room! All rooms on the ship were 25 sq ft except mine which was 10 sq ft. Smaller than my walk-in closet at home. Dark. No sliding doors or balcony like everyone else. Tiny tiny bathroom. And there were 5 staterooms unoccupied! They didn't have to give me that room. After complaint they did move me, but if this is the way they deal with single travelers, do you want to deal with them?
They charged me $1500 for airfare Bangkok round trip. I then saw it advertised for $882. They overcharged me. When I called, they said they just pick a number and that is what they charge irrespective of the actual cost! Too late to change for me so I paid about DOUBLE. To top things off, when I got on the trip, I found that most of the other passengers paid NO airfare. To top things off further, the flight arrangements were horrid. They left me sitting in Bangkok for 12 hours alone after all the other travelers were gone home. I called the airlines and there was space on the same flight 12 other passengers were on. Grand circle said they would change it for a $200 change fee. They never should have left a single elderly woman alone that way in the first place! I refused to pay it. Then they said I had to leave my hotel room! I was to sit in the lobby for 4 hours until a van came for me! I refused to leave my room.
They said I would have to pay a night myself, but in the end after I contacted Grand Circle headquarters, they did let me keep the room until van came. The only thing I can figure is they saved a few bucks on the fare to inconvenience me so. And just icing on the cake, they booked some cheaper class ticket so I could not get my frequent flyer miles! To say do not let them book your airfare for you seems unnecessary but DO NOT LET THEM BOOK YOUR AIRFARE!!! Actually, do you want to even deal with a company who is so grubby greedy???

In the next few weeks we will take a very much anticipated trip to Cuba using Grand Circle. Not our first GC or OAT trip and every one so far has been a 5 star event. What this is about is some of the "things" that we have learned so far. I questioned two things: 1. Why there is a luggage fee with this being a charter flight (and your total luggage weight limit is 44# )? I had spoken with Air Aruba the listed charter for the trip. They said that they didn't charge a baggage fee on charters. All part of the charter. So I asked why we had a separate baggage fee of $20 per person? This was for the whole trip and not each way. The poor guy I was talking to, I think thought like I did and was gone for extended conversations with others. All I got was that Air Aruba charged that fee. Nonsense, I had spoken with them minutes before the GC call. Nickel-diming. Increase the tour fee by $20 if the margin is that thin.
2. I also asked about the tipping for the guide which is $7-10 USD per person per day. Our tour has 20 people so the guide gets $1400-2000. I felt that was excessive for a Cuban when the average MONTHLY salary is around $20 USD. Felt it would upset the economy. Well, another long off the phone conversation and guess what? The guide isn't a Cuban who lives in Cuba. This is a Cuban-American (citizen) who lives in Little Havana (Miami).
I have never gone on one of their tours where the guide was not a native who lived in his/her country. I want a person who is living the day to day experience of a communist country, that is very poor, and about to be opened up to big economic changes. I'll never get to see that person, not in the close extended way that you do with a tour guide. I am very disappointed and upset with this GC nonsense. I will review the actual trip afterwards and maybe my perspective will have changed.

We have traveled 5 times with GC and enjoyed each and every trip. We just made a reservation to travel to Australia next year in November when I received an email that I need to accept their Terms and Conditions. As we never had to do this in the past I reviewed the T&C's prior to accepting them. I was greatly surprised when I read them. I have never read a contract that was so one sided. The terms stated that GC was only a travel agent and was not responsible for anything that went wrong on your trip.
They could, according to the T&C's, abandon you if a problem came up during the trip and you had no recourse against GC. I contacted GC as I could not accept these terms and was told I had to in order to travel. I said I had never done this in the past and was told the T&C's were new in 2014 and that was that. Needless to say, we cancelled our trip and I am still waiting for my refund. The deposit was charged to my credit card immediately but the refund supposedly takes 10 days. Enough said, goodbye Grand Circle.

We have just returned from our 9th and last GC trip and the trip itself, Romantic Villages of Alpine Europe was outstanding. However, the flight portion of the trip, scheduled by GC, was a nightmare. We have a 5 hr layover in Frankfurt and a 6 hr layover in Phila on our return from the trip. There were many other flight options available, one which would have routed us through Charlotte, as we were routed on our trip to Italy, and would have had us arrive home 6 hours earlier. GC travel would not change the routing after several requests and long discussions with the travel department. On the day of our travel from the US Lufthansa had a one day pilot strike and we were not notified of the flight cancellation until we arrived at the airport, 50 miles from our home and $50 poorer. We will not travel with GC again nor will we recommend their travel to anyone.

I feel strongly that this company is untrustworthy. I changed a reservation for one trip for another within the time frame allowed. For some reason they didn't register the change and sent me final information for the first trip. When I called and said I had changed trips, they replied that they had to listen to the phone call which they said had been recorded. After supposedly listening to the call, they reported that I didn't make the change because I couldn't decide between two dates for the second trip. I asked to listen to the call but they refused. I remember very clearly changing the trip; I just chose a date and went with it. I was under a lot of pressure to just get the change done, it was next to last day that change was allowed, and it was so far in the future that I had no commitments and all dates would have been equal.
The upshot is that I lose the almost $600 in travel insurance that I paid for the trip and will only be able to get a travel voucher for the rest of the money. But I do not want to travel with them since, as so many others have noted, they lack integrity. I feel the problem goes beyond greed, it seems to be something deeper and perhaps even more problematic.

In July 2014 during a Grand Circle Travel (GCT) dream trip to Ireland, Murphy's Law reigned supreme. Bad weather in New York delayed a flight coming to Orlando, for me to take the return flight to Kennedy Airport. By 15 minutes, I missed the flight to Ireland at 10:45PM. :>( [Delta reps, however, realized that the jet was still at the gate but could not allow me to board. They made arrangements at no cost for me to stay in a local hotel and take the same flight the next night.]
A week before the Ireland trip end, a dog knocked me over and I spent two days in hospital, causing me to end my trip. The TripMate travel insurance (I strongly advising not using disreputable TripMate) that GCT had sold me was ineffective and its third-party agency did not accept collect calls from Ireland. I had no recourse, lost tons of money. But, hey, that's Murphy's Law.
I had vowed never again to travel with GCT, but in July 2015 an opportunity came available to visit the Canadian Rockies, Seattle, and Vancouver. The GCT sales rep saw that I had a bad experience in 2014 and accommodated a free single supplement that would have cost about $800. That GCT accommodated a single traveler at no additional cost when the tour had virtually sold out is a testament that Grand Circle Travel truly does care about its guests and strives to provide satisfaction. The bad taste (like 2-for-a-dollar hotdogs) from TripMate had jaded my opinion of GCT. That was my bad, and GCT has totally restored confidence in this fine travel organizer. I've already planned a trip to Italy in spring 2016.

In short, they told me to take a hike and that they would do nothing for me to honor the offer they sent to me.

Grand Circle Tours is one of the best values in the travel industry. I have traveled with them as a single many times & always treated with respect & care. Their accommodations are top quality. The venue in each country exceptional. The people that you meet become friends & the choices for restaurants are great showing the flavor of the country &/or location that you visit. Anyone who travels should always buy travel insurance especially a senior traveler. What are you thinking? You are NOT bulletproof. We were traveling to Sicily & a sudden situation put one of us in the hospital under very dire circumstances.
All of our money was refunded by Grand Circle Tours! It was American Airlines that cheated us left & right - They are the worst! If you love to travel, Grand Circle Tours will give you your money’s worth & more. Don't believe the "naysayers" as they are usually people that gripe about everything & don't find the joy in each day & each experience. We even touched people's lives in a positive way for 12 days in the hospital. We missed the Sicily trip but we reveled in the fact that life has a way of giving us an opportunity to smile through the hard times in the valley & be more thankful for the times when we are at the top of the mountain.

Beware of Grand Circle's bait and switch pricing. They do not honor contracts and Alan and Harriet ** and upper management refuse to speak to customers. My invoice from them gave my balance and due date for getting their Good Buy discount and once my deposit was past the refundable date they emailed to us to say they changed their policy and we had to be paid in full by the end of this month to receive quoted price. Over 14 months prior to departure rather than 12 months before departure. Otherwise price goes up. It looks like they are in financial trouble and need the cash. Makes me wonder if traveling with them is secure.

I have been travelling with OATS/GCT for over 20 years and have gone on at least 15 trips. I have taken my family on many of these trips, costing me at times about $20,000 a trip. I have very much enjoyed the tours that are offered and the memories are wonderful. My last trip was to Italy with my grand-daughter in March-April. Unfortunately, we, along with several others on our GTC tour, became ill with an upper respiratory illness. We tried to get over it with over the counter cold medication but I was forced to take 2 days off the tour to stay in the hotel to rest (I am 86).
I did not go to hospital because it seemed an over-reaction to my symptoms, although my daughter who is an RN in the States was afraid for me due to my age. I am not one to run to the doctor for every sniffle. However, this illness was taking the pleasure out of this trip. The tour guide eventually arranged for a doctor to come to the hotel and he treated several people from our tour.
As I always do, I took out your trip insurance, which was expensive. I have applied for reimbursement of my medical costs as per the requirements, and it has been months with no resolution. I am being questioned and told to go through various hoops to get reimbursed the approximately $300 for medical costs for myself and my grand-daughter. I am disgusted and dismayed at the run-around which I am getting for a very small amount of money, especially in light of all the money I have spent with this company for trips over the years, as well as the cost of the trip insurance itself. There should be no hesitation to just pay the incurred medical bills. The rules appear to be red-tape created to get out of paying any bills.
My allegiance to OATS/GTC has certainly not paid off. At this point, I am asking myself why I would want to continue travelling with a company who has no respect for my customer loyalty and who would put me through such bureaucratic nonsense for $300, when I have spent easily over $100,000 of business with them. I am very very disappointed in the worsening quality that this company provides. I am looking elsewhere for my future travel plans.

So far my family and I have been on four grand circle/overseas adventure travel vacations, and they have all been superlative. We have been on the Italy/Amalfi trip with the extension to Venice, the Costa Rican trip with the extension to Tortuguero, the African safari trip to Tanzania, and the month-long Turkish trip with the extension of the week on the yacht in the Aegean. I could go on and on (and on) about the incredible experiences we had on each trip, the extensive knowledge of ALL of the guides we had, and their genuine concern for our comfort, safety, and satisfaction.
I find it surprising that people are willing to write a totally negative review, blasting a good company, based solely on the amount of mail they receive. Really? I know they send a considerable amount of advertising information, but isn't that what most businesses do? Advertise? Keep their name and beautiful travel ideas in front of their customers? Since when was that a crime?
Furthermore, when I have planned a trip, whether with GC/OAT or a different company, I have always been proactive in checking the details well before the trip. On one occasion, I did receive airline reservations that I felt were not convenient to me, and Grand Circle was happy to change them to the flights I desired, and they did so immediately. We, as a family, have been so happy with this company that when we decided to take a month-long river cruise, we chose them to take it with. I, for one, am looking forward to it, and know I will get a first class adventure. I noticed that the disclaimer at the beginning of this site says that GC/OAT is not a member. I wonder if they would get better reviews if they were?
