My husband and I both had life insurance. His policy of $15,000 monthly was $64.98 went up to $112.88. My policy was 15,000 monthly was 13.69 went up to 19.48. We were not notified of these changes and I am disabled my husband retired and were not able to continue paying these payments. As told by the company I will not get compensated and basically I lost all this money for the last 6 yrs. Bad life insurance and do not recommend it.

Purchased NY Life/AARP life insurance $75,000 for $195 a mo., requiring an electronic withdrawal from our bank each month. Filled one out & signed it. My husband had 3 strokes during back surgery & was unable to speak clearly, walk, or have memory for a year. Each month I checked our account to be sure who was deducting. Because I almost lost my husband of 55 yrs., I finally felt I should increase his amount of insurance. When I looked, I never got a policy or a copy of the "authorization", tried for months to get it from them, & finally got it a couple of months ago. They had, without notifying us or getting another authorization, DECREASED our amount of insurance to $32,000, and INCREASED our monthly premium to $322.

We requested a copy over & over of the "authorization", but they still have not sent it. My bank will not credit my account with over a year of UNAUTHORIZED payments, and NY Life/AARP has not refunded these payments. Now we are forced, at 77 & no income, to have to pay an attorney to FORCE all these people to give our money back, as well as having them ARRESTED for THEFT.

I see a name, Jason Montgomery as agent out of Arkansas and California? New York Life seems to be a legitimate company and AARP is but some of the reviews seem to be suspicious on this company. Thank you for any insight. I would hate to waste thousands of dollars in premiums if this is a scam insurance company. Unable to publish email address so I'll check to see the latest reviews (2020). I have carried a $50,000 AARP Term life policy for 25 years. Last year we moved and I updated my address with the company as instructed. I recently stopped receiving my premium notices and when I called to check on it after much wrangling and being put on hold and transferred I was told that the post office had returned several of my invoices and put a mailing label on them that has never been an address of mine. So, the company cancelled my policy! NO phone call, no email...They said they sent a notice to the bogus address (which of course I did not receive) and so 25 years of payments and the insurance I was planning on for my two children no longer exists through no fault of my own. NO apologies, no offers of reinstatement. Only an offer to reapply for insurance at age 69 and start over. Terrible customer service and a real disappointment.

My grandma started a policy with NYL/AARP Nov/2011, January 2019 she was diagnosed with Metastatic Lung cancer that spread to the brain, esophagus and other areas, she transitioned this life Oct 2019. I was concerned that her 100,000 dollar policy wouldn’t be honored after reading some of these complaints, I couldn’t be more wrong, the benefit check was mailed within 10 days. The common thread with a lot of these complaints are that the policyholder died within the contestable period and also when the policy has lapsed, it's crazy that some people would expect a payout on a lapsed policy, speak with your elderly relatives especially when they’re sick to prevent a lapsed policy. As long as medical history isn’t hidden on the application and the policy has lapsed, which should be a no brainer, everything should be fine.

When he passed I called about his policy and was told they stopped accepting auto-pay which was the same time he moved. Out of all the people he paid bills to they were the only ones that didn't recognize his change of address. They told me I could write a letter and possibly recover the money he put into it. They are a joke, but most insurance companies find a way not to pay so I wasn't surprised.

I joined AARP 6 months ago and tonight I called them to ask them to stop sending me insurance offers. I haven't kept an exact count but I estimate I have received at least 20 offers for insurance (car, life, health) since joining. I've gotten 3 car insurance mailers in just the last couple of weeks. It's relentless. I logged onto the website and searched for a way to stop the mailers (I imagine AARP kills a lot of trees sending these out to all their members).

I searched the site, and not finding an option to stop mailings, I finally clicked on help. I typed in "STOP Insurance mailings" and it gave me a Phone number to call so they could advise their vendors... but warned that it would take up to 3 months to stop the mailings. I called the Ph# 800-687-2277 and got connected to a robotic Pitch Loop! First the robot wanted to sell me an emergency button in case I fell down, you know "I've fallen and I can't get up". I discovered (too late) that if you press # it will stop the pitch... AND START ANOTHER! I then heard about their most excellent roadside assistance plan (sorry-AAA for 34 years)... #! Then I got a pitch on AT&T internet services... #! And when I pressed # again, they started the AT&T pitch again... # # # #! When I finally got the Robot salesman to stop it referred me to another Ph# 800-712-6600 which ROBO SALESPERSON said had replaced the previous Ph#.

When I called, I got a new ROBO SALESPERSON who started their pitch with AT&T. I hung up...called another # and requested a full refund for my 5 year membership dues (they insist on keeping $5 for the many excellent sales pitches they provided me). They are supposed to be an organization in service to seniors - As far as I can tell, they just sell their mailing list to anybody (and everybody) to fill their coffers, kill trees, and abuse seniors with endless emails and snail mail pitches. SHAME ON YOU AARP!

This company who my father-in-law obtained life insurance with accidental benefits from is a joke! He had two life insurance policies and luckily the other company was true to their word and paid out on both benefits within 15 days of his death. The day we received the accidental benefit from the “other” company AARP only paid us the life insurance portion. It has been over a month and a half since my FIL passed and this company wouldn’t allow us to email them the records from the hospital stating they don’t have secure email....are you joking?!? So after we finally mailed out the 240 page records they have taken over 2 weeks to go through them. Still to this day we are waiting for a payout on the accidental portion. How clearer can it be if the coroner puts on the death certificate (which AARP has) blunt force trauma!? Let’s hope they actually pay out one day!!

My mother took out AARP Life Insurance, she answered all questions truthfully. She passed away 22 months after having the policy. They went back 5 years in her medical records and denied the $10,000 life insurance. They stated had they known of something in her medical records they never would have allowed her the policy. It’s beyond upsetting that my mother thought she was providing life insurance to her child. AARP tells the elderly they are approved with no medical exam and won’t be denied... Little do our loved ones know they paid premiums for the insurance to only be taken for a ride.

Shame on these people and their misrepresentation to customers, then they go back to the date they offer the policyholder to increase their benefit which causes AARP to state the policy is in the contested stage. Why offer this to these policyholders and then screw them over in the end!!! NEVER would I suggest this to any of your loved ones. If they want a life insurance help to make sure their premiums are not all in vain.

I like their non-changing fee for monthly payment for whole life insurance. I have mental illness and am on disability and this changed everything for my policy as the payout is only $5000 and the monthly contribution is $20 or so. But the monthly contribution doesn't increase. I was also able to borrow $500 from my policy which is pretty common. However, I don't really see why I would only have a sum of $5000 for my relatives which is not enough to bury myself and enough for cremation barely. At least the amount I contribute doesn't change but I wish the way they do this would leave more for my survivors.

AARP honestly seems as any other good life Insurance company. I am able to easily make changes online or the phone if I want to change or add anyone. They claim fast payout if God forbid myself or husband passes away or any of my children. I can cancel anytime I choose which will stop the low monthly payments automatically withdrawn from my account. If I do choose to cancel I lose out on the past payments and money I've put into it in the last 5 years, but I don't plan to cancel. My husband and I are young and plan to get something better. Once older we more have this In case something bad like accident happens and we will know either me or him will be financially okay along with both our kids plus costs for a funeral.

I dislike the policy I got since it's not full term life insurance and myself and husband are considered too young to begin that type of policy so we can't ever borrow against it or get any money back we pay into it until we've paid for the full 20 years so if you decide you no longer want to keep paying the monthly payments before the full 20 years then AARP keeps the money they collected from you even if it was 19 years they have collected on.

Nevertheless, I've had great experience. They take out the monthly payment on the same date each month and it's only $26 which will go up in 10 more years, but I'll be notified and given the choice to proceed or cancel beforehand. My agent that makes any changes is good. She alerts and contacts me if there's any changes within the company chancing there being a change to my policy. I'm also mailed a copy of my policy yearly and how much I have put into it and the amount that would be paid out if anything was to happen the upcoming new year.

As a senior we look out for services that are specific to our age group and AARP has accommodated this desire. They cater to people like me rather than try to be inclusive of every age group. But there could possibly be room for improvement in their online services. It is only sensible to become more in tune with doing things online instead of having to wait on live people at the other end of a phone line. Nevertheless, AARP has been very rewarding, there is a lot of compensation for being a member. I called and was reassured that I still had my policy but my rates would increase as I was on a new "Tier". They kept trying to get me to exchange my term policy to whole life which would cost me almost 200.00 per month!!! I was upset that the whole life was not offered to me initially as I would have accepted the whole life... 7 years ago! I agree with everyone else, I trusted AARP but now I see that this policy is a scam for us older individuals and now I'm wondering if I should keep IT because of the reviews, they might not pay my kids and husband if I passed away!

I advise EVERYONE... DON'T GET NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE THRU AARP!!! Now, I think I will cancel my AARP membership. I trusted them and now my trust has been lost. AARP should be ashamed to have this company representing them. I'm embarrassed that I fell for their scheme. I know that there are a lot of seniors in the same boat that I am. What do you do after having paid this company premiums for 7 years??! Just what I am doing. Warn others and try to locate a good company that will treat you fairly. My next step is to the New York Insurance Commissioner because of the blatant misrepresentation that this company has done to seniors. Take my advice. Run as fast as you can from this company!!!

This whole association between AARP and New York Life appears to be a conspiracy to scam senior citizens. The policy was grossly misrepresented and immediately upon sending me an email saying that I was approved they charges the premium without me ever seeing the policy (it arrived 2 weeks later). When I called they said that was "policy". When I requested cancellation which I have now done 3 times they refused to cancel unless I notify them in writing and refused to refund my $266 unless I send them a written request.

Once I send them a written request they will take at least 15 business days or more to give me a refund so, the entire process can take up to six weeks!!! This is just a ripoff and they are preying on the senior citizens. AARP does not answer emails and there is no way to call them. They did the same thing to me on my supplemental health insurance policy with United Healthcare. In less than six months they have raised my monthly premium of $115 by 20% and I have only had one claim for $8. Another ripoff by AARP.

I've read a lot of bad reviews about beneficiaries getting their payment from AARP Life Insurance. My mother passed away in October and I received my full payment due me from AARP a month later. What might have made my payment successful and quick was that my mother was healthy at the time of applying and had this policy for over 12 years which was for $10,000. She never missed a payment and total payments to AARP throughout the years was over $13,000. So AARP Life made money on this policy. Another thing to note is you got to watch out for the person that dies only had the policy under two years. Seems like that will allow the payment to be contested.

My advice is be careful with companies that advertise no medical needed, just answer a few health questions. When the person dies that could allow the insurance company to delay or contest payment while they research the person’s medical records to make sure the questions were answered truthfully. That can result on the beneficiary having to supply medical records and other documents that can delay the payment or even deny payment. I hope everyone has as smooth a transaction as I did.

She had the policy for less than 2 years - about 1-1/2 years. She died in her sleep of unknown causes but no medical condition she had would have caused sudden death. She died on a Tuesday and was planning a week vacation to the beach starting Saturday - she was not sick. They have requested records from everyone they can find that she ever saw. I spoke to them on the phone today. After reading these reviews, I feel sick. I am on social security myself and fear they will look for an "out." The membership department of AARP is a total disgrace. My mother passed away over 1-1/2 years ago. Upon her death, AARP was notified within a couple of weeks; however, I continue to receive billing and renewal information from the company. Each time a notice was received, I returned with a note on the billing that she had passed away. Apparently, the staff of this department is totally incapable of reading and updating records; or, which I tend to believe is that they don't care. This is an agency that is supposed to have the best interest of seniors; however, their inattention to detail show just the opposite. The amount of money spent by this agency to send these notifications is a waste; and I consider it harassment. The cost of redundant mailings could be put to real use by helping seniors. Another concern, if one notices on the billings/membership renewals there is no way to contact AARP.

I was only able to submit my concern by finding a number online. There are a lot of people who do not have internet access. Today, after I spoke with an agent, Kayla, she assured me that the mailings would cease. I shall see. I hope it does; because each month when these are received by me, addressed to my, mother, my stress level increases due to the frustration of AARP not addressing my multiple requests to discontinue these mailings. The agent advised that they had never received the notifications that my mother was deceased. Not sure what they do when they are received; however, I know I have sent more than 1 dozen notifications. Not a company with which I wish to conduct business.

I'm very sadden beyond words. My mom like most parents was excited when she got life insurance and like everyone else she paid her premium and unfortunately passed away. Thankfully we had family to help us pay for her funeral to give her the respect and dignity she deserved when AARP refused to pay the Funeral Home since they needed to investigate. As her child I decided to do some research and found this website along with others and I must admit that I am expecting me and my siblings to not get paid a dime since it appears AARP doesn't like paying up, even when you answer honestly to get the insurance. Who knew you could be healthy but had an emergency room visit a few years ago and they use that visit to deny your claim.

This company itself needs to be investigated and from what I see it needs to be shut down. It's adding more grief to families when they decide they don't want to pay because for example; Jeff had a breathing treatment a year ago although he was healthy, but AARP says if they had known that they would've denied his application. I'm just disgusted and hurt to be honest since I know my mom wouldn't want this, but it's ok my family is strong and we will be ok. I just hope other people take notes and go with another insurance company. AARP is what I consider an insurance company that "hustle" and for those who don't know what that means, it means they will basically say and do anything to get money and you to get their services even if it means stretching the truth. I'll update...

My mother purchased a life insurance policy years ago. This policy was maintained and paid for by my now deceased brother for several years. Years have gone by and my mother is now in a nursing home and has been there at least four years. At least yearly Medicaid and Medicare require lots of paperwork to keep her enrolled. Part of the headache is this policy that apparently has some sort of "cash value". I can't imagine how much this value could be but it can't be more than $1,000. Nevertheless, this policy is an issue each and every time, without fail. I finally have gotten tired of playing this game with everyone and decided to TRY and do something about this policy so it won't be an issue in the future.

With that said, I've now had the Power of Attorney paperwork faxed three (3) separate times to a number that has been verified several times over a period of approximately a month. Each time a call customer service I get the, "I don't see any record of it being here" story. I get the obligatory apologies, etc. as they assure me that this doesn't typically happen, so on and so on. I don't think for one minute that I'm that special, that I'm the only person whose fax is mysteriously disappearing from one floor to the next. To add insult to injury, I've gotten tired of playing the "fax game" with you guys so I thought I would have the nursing home MAIL a copy to the address that was provided for me. Do you want to guess what I was told when I inquired about whether or not you had received it??? Do ya??? "Oh, I don't see it here. Are you sure you mailed it to the right address?"

Your company need to seriously look at your processes which directly link to your overall communication with different departments and to your customers because there is some SERIOUSLY DEFICIENT processes being used right now. I just cancelled all of my insurance policies with USAA which consisted of two houses, two cars, and my wife's wedding rings because of things just like this. Needless to say, I'm really tired of dealing with insurance companies that make lots of promises, love getting those monthly payments but really leave you scratching your head when it comes to getting someone to get off their butt and help with an issue or problem.

Here's the bottom line. First off, I wouldn't recommend you guys to anyone I knew, even if I didn't like them and wanted to see them hurt. Second, I'm actually waiting on a return call from the manager of the department I've been dealing with and her name is Tina **. I'll just say that I'll be absolutely shocked if she actually calls me back. I provided my cell phone number and I have that phone on me 24 hours a day and I do answer it. I'll be so shocked that, when I'm finally done dealing with you guys and there does end up being some sort of "cash value" attached to this thing, I'm going to give all of the money to Tina ** to do with it as she pleases. Pay for a party for her entire department, donate it to a charity of her choice, go on a vacation, buy some clothes, I really don't care. I simply want that nightmare of a policy to disappear from the face of the earth. That's about as clear as I can make this.

Tell you what. My mother has a phone. Her nursing home is right across the street from the bank I work at. Let's get her on the phone and this way we can completely eliminate the need for a POA and everyone can wash their hands off this fiasco. You contact me at my email address or call me on my cell phone. Tell me when you want to talk to mom and I'll make it happen. There, that should just about do it. No more excuses. No more BS apologies. Just get it done like your job or your family or anything else that actually mattered to you depended on it. That usually motivates people. Once it actually matters to YOU then YOU will get off your butt and make something happen instead of making lame excuse after lame excuse. OK, let's see if anyone will actually call or email me. By the way, I was forced to select one (1) star as to how I would rate your company and my experience. Unfortunately, there aren't any negative numbers to choose.

Now funny considering it has been in the manager's office since Dec. 2, 2015. My claim was finally resolved after I contacted AARP directly and filed a escalate case on my dad's delayed claim. New York Life Insurance is horrible and keeps telling me that his claim was under review with the underwriters for several months. Let them know what's going on and request assistance by setting an escalation. It took 10 days for New York Life Insurance to finally settle. We are relieved and can now move on. Good luck everyone.

    Original Review: Jan. 18, 2017

New York Life Insurance is horrible. My dad passed away from an aggressive, sudden cancer. Therefore, he passed away so sudden and under the two year policy. I have complied with everything and getting his medical records. I was informed that they were not interested in getting any records after his policy was effective, but rather were interested in records prior to. Determined he was healthy during the time he applied. Since he was healthy there were no records before his policy but a year after his policy went to an effect.

Anyhow, is been two months since they confirmed they have everything they need to make a determination and to this day, they continue to report that is under review. I was told by the claim handler that it should take about 30 days to decline or settle claim after the underwriters have the claim in their hands. I keep calling for status and no real response other than is still under review. It's all clear that my dad had no history with illness and his cancer was a sudden discovery (on records). I have now filed a complaint directly to AARP, and hoping to get this resolved. Is obvious that they do not want to pay out.

It is now mid February I just contacted the insurance commissioner, because though she passed within the contestable period, it was no preexisting condition... And they keep asking for the same paperwork over and over, I would not insure my pet Maltese through this company. And I love him like one of my children. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I do not have insurance with an employer and this was the best choice I made. I found out about this insurance once I turned 50 years old and I also pay $16.00 a year to be an AARP member which is not much for the benefits you receive. I even wrote in that she had a heart attack 2 years ago. So that issue the policy a standard policy. I worked for an insurance company in the past. They ask you over 20 question about your medical history and before they issued you a policy they would check it out. But AARP don't do that. My mother pass month ago a heart attack. Now they say if they would have known this that they would have declined her. They never had no intention to pay on this policy. AARP is a fraud. They will collect all of your premium. Did when it time to pay off they come up with all of this about her when those wasn't any questions on the application so I won't recommend AARP to no one. They will not do you right. My experience with AARP is that every time I made payment whether online, personal check or money order, they never received payment until a few months when, alas, I found the payment. Many times my bank account was overdrawn because AARP claimed they never received payment online and a month later they found the payment when I did not have the funds. I finally decided to cancel all insurance with them, sent them a registered letter, return receipt requested, and guess what? They never received it even though they signed the return receipt acknowledging receipt. I'm not sure if this is a game they play of never receiving letters or payments, or perhaps it is the city I live in, Philadelphia, but I will never deal with them!

After numerous tries of getting them the documents we started having the doctor's office and funeral fax them over... Still nothing, never received. It's now 1/23/2015 and no payout, same excuse. She asked me if I had cancer and I said I had prostate cancer back in 07or 08. It's been a long time but it’s gone and has not shown his head anymore. If she needed proof I have and willing to prove it. The next thing I knew I get her letter from this underwriter, saying that I have been denied because I said to her that I had cancer. I did not say that.

I explained to her my situation. She made the decision to deny me insurance under false pretense. Is that right what someone that supposed to be fair to treat someone that needs and being honest about life insurance and a good customer. So I know there's nothing is going to be done about her but she is not God and she shouldn't lie on people. I'm African American and I believe she did it out of and I'm a member. Many phone calls with differing answers to our questions depending on who picked up the phone. It has been almost three months since my mother died and we received the benefit check today. All said and done, AARP/ New York Life lacks any communication pertaining to a claim. I was actually astonished to receive the death benefit today because the phone calls made to them, and correspondence from them made us out to be suspects.

I had to use our state's insurance commissioner's office to get any information pertaining to the claim and I firmly believe that contact with the commission brought about a more expeditious resolve. The time of great family loss is no time for those left behind to play games, stress and jump through hoops.

My mom had a policy just shy of two years with this company. I understand the “contestability” period, but she passed away on December 5th. It is now January 10th, and this company requires me, as the beneficiary to provide all of her medical records for the last two years. Since when is it incumbent upon the benefactor do this? I don't have this information. I get the run around when I call and do not receive any correspondence from New York Life concerning the status of the claim. This AARP New York Life insurance program is a scam! What's worse, I'm an AARP member! Shame on you!

And for them to start paying back, they think they are like the IRS - impenetrable. I used to keeping them in a pedestal, but no idea what happened. I am thinking they lost lots of people/clientele (may be the Republican ones) and they want the remained ones to pay for their lifestyle. Now they are even using for senior citizen the non-mandatory Commissioner, Minority Report that said that if you get bad credit you have the necessity to fake/create claims??? TO SENIOR CITIZEN???

I was informed by one of their rude employees... that because the "Minority Report" by the commissioner standards that they have to abide by... NOT TRUE!!! It's not mandatory and it should not be applied to seniors (this is to car insurance) - REASON why they increase my insurance 1/3 more... So let get people together and reunited for an investigation so they paid back all they owe to the people they rip off. So when you do this, do not forget to let me know... I'm actually an insurance agent by trade and immediately knew it was bad to put it mildly and asked for terms and conditions and without buying couldn't ever get anywhere... Not very above board in my opinion.

The problem with many of these burial expense plans, instead of real final expense whole life plans from reputable agent and reputable insurance carriers is they end up putting you into a "group" plan which is ok for health insurance but terrible for life insurance. Typically after a few years they raise your rates like everyone in the group banding and many of them even decrease your death benefit or face amount at the same time. Not exactly in your best interest since funeral expenses have climbed by over 1200% increase since 1960.

However my father always paid his monthly payments of $65.00 give or take a couple of dollars. At the end stage, right before he died, he missed his last three payments because of his illnesses and the pneumonia. On January 6 his doctor called and told me that my dad wouldn't make it through the night. So I hurried to the hospital and asked my dad if there was anything I could do before he went. Weakly he tried to tell me by writing bonus a piece of paper that he want sure if he paid his life insurance. Since I'm a single mother to 6 kids, my father felt that at least he could do is leave me some money to help bury him and pay off any old or occurring debts. Therefore, I went to his house and found his mail and sure enough he had a stack of unpaid bills. I went to Moneygram that same day and made a payment for $194.00 which equaled 3 months. Unfortunately, Moneygram takes 24 hours before the payment goes through.

Finally, after my dad died on the 6th of January, I called a couple weeks later to file a claim and about a month later I received a letter saying that AARP was sorry to inform me that I wouldn't be able to receive my dad's payout for his life insurance since his premiums weren't paid until the day after the 6th. I called them several times to explain what happened and then finally someone from AARP told me to get a dr. note stating why my father couldn't make his payments. So, I did just that. I still didn't receive anything and it's been over 3 months without anything except a check for the payment I made for $194.00 for my dad's 3 missed payments. However, when I sent the documents from the his doctor, I returned those checks back to show them I don't agree.

It is not a scam and they have different types of policies. Do I like AARP, absolutely not. Why? Well, in almost every situation that I have come across the individual who had AARP could qualify for a fully underwritten policy, which is much less expensive and allows the customer to participate in company dividends. Some AARP plans require a two-year waiting period before claims will be paid. Normally, premiums would be returned plus interest with this type of plan (usually a high risk client). They also sell term to age 80. Which increases in price every five years and ENDS at age 80. There is NO cash value in this policy and if the client lives to age 80 and 1 minute, there is no coverage. Finally, AARP sells a whole life product that issues on a table rating (making premiums much higher than a fully underwritten product). This product also does not participate in dividends so the face amount never increases nor will there ever be a great deal of cash value.

People who blindly enroll in this plan are being naive. You should always speak with a credible licensed agent. We are paid and paid well to help our clients avoid situations like the ones listed here. Do I represent AARP? No. Would I ever recommend the company... Maybe once a year I have a prospect who this is the ONLY insurance they can qualify for. I explain how the AARP policies work and will stay with them while they call AARP.

They delayed the request long enough to allow them to not accept application due to age. On 1/13/13, I applied for their insurance program for 6 grandkids. The oldest, 17 at the time, did have Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW) but was operated and completely cured as I noted on the application. Grandson turned 18 on 3/11/13 which would not qualify him for this program now, but at time of application, he was 17 and did qualify by age. AARP insurance denied grandson officially on 2/27/13 after our phone conversation stating: "We have considered your request for life insurance. We regret that we are unable to provide the coverage you requested. Our underwriting decision was based on a history of Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome. The source of our information was the medical information provided with your request for insurance and/or our telephone interview. We did not obtain information from any other source."

The letter also stated: "We believe that the information is accurate and complete. If you ask us to correct or amend any information about you in our files, we will carefully consider your comments. If we cannot comply with your request, you have the right to give us a concise statement of what you believe is the correct information. We will put your statement in your file."

We had his doctor officially reply to them on 3/26/13 stating the procedure was performed on 10/24/12, as well as follow-up evaluation performed on 12/20/12 and stated: "I am certain his heart is normal. He does not require any activity restrictions or limitations."

AARP again replied again, not specifically stating they would accept the application now with the doctor's information, but they are denying now based on age. They wrote: "New York Life designed the AARP Young Start so that AARP members would have the opportunity to apply for coverage on their children or grandchildren up to 17 years of age. Unfortunately, (I omitted name) is outside of our age limitations for our AARP Young Start program and we have no other products available for his current age range."

I called questioning their decision based on the application when he was 17 but they couldn't care less and used the age opportunity to deny his coverage so they did not have to deal with WPW. I am considering dropping the other 5 and searching other companies for coverage.

About 2 weeks later, we got a letter in the mail asking my mom medical questions such as her BP and any medical conditions. My mom truthfully answered telling them that she is now diabetic and gave a list of medications along with her AC1 level. 1 month and about 8 phone calls later, we got another letter in the mail denying her for reinstatement due to history of diabetes. History? Where the hell was there a history of it? She was diagnosed in March of 2012!

When we called AARP to dispute it, my mother was shut down by a representative who told her she committed fraud. Are you kidding me? So who gets the $9,000 that my mother has paid into this policy because according to AARP, it will not be my mother?! We're calling a lawyer.

My mom just passed away. She did not have AARP, but only had $5000 life insurance which was not quite enough to bury her. Dad is in a nursing home and has AARP, $15,000 Permanent Life, which they have been paying on for years. He has Alzheimer's now. I received a letter stating that the cash value of this policy is $2,467.24! I just paid them $455 for three months for dad's insurance and then I got that letter. This is a huge rip off. I will not pay another month of that so-called insurance. Besides having less than $15,000 in life insurance, I am getting bills for my mom that Medicaid did not cover and bills for my dad that I cannot cover. They want him to sell his home to pay for his bills. It's sad. He's a veteran and will end up broke. I don't care about getting any money when my parents are gone, but it would be nice if their insurance covered their funerals and hospital bills. Do not buy Permanent Life. Save your money. In April of 2012, I realized that the debit hadn't occurred. Then when I checked our bank statements, it noted that the January debit hadn't been made either. I called NY Life only to be told they had mailed us three letters and left three voicemail messages notifying us it would be cancelled. Twelve years, I never a missed payment and suddenly we missed their six attempts to contact us! Absolutely ludicrous. They knew exactly what they were doing and enjoyed 12 years of premiums with no obligation to pay. I contacted Insurance Commission but they were satisfied with NY Life's lame response. So we are out in the cold. Over the years, my husband has been diagnosed with critical illnesses and cannot obtain life insurance. I would never buy anything ever again through AARP or NY Life. Then without notification, they increased the insurance premium due to his age of 75 to $63.87 more a month. That is not only stealing, by taking monies not asked for but increasing premium at such a high amount when we have been religiously paying monthly premiums to this company of $84.00, so they have received over $4,046.40 and now want to increase the premium at such a large increase.

In the last year of his life, he was diagnosed with cancer and quickly declined in health. My mother was no longer able to take care of him at home, so as a last resort, he went to stay in a retirement home with round-the-clock nursing staff to care for him. When he died and my mother contacted AARP regarding the insurance policy, they would not pay. The reason they stated was that a physician had to be on-site at the facility he was residing 24 hours a day. How many retirement or nursing homes have an on-site physician 24 hours a day? What if someone is at home and expires and there is no physician living with them, so would payment of the insurance policy be refused based on that?! Ridiculous bs- unfortunately my mother was very naive and didn't challenge it. Even more unfortunate, she failed to even mention it to me until years later.

This has got to be one of the biggest crocks of ** I have ever heard and AARP just ripped off my parents and took all the years they paid the premiums to them and pocketed it. I am going to talk to a lawyer to see if there is any way I can take this on despite the fact it was quite awhile ago. At the very least, I can add our experience to this website to let others be wary of the unscrupulous, near criminal business practices of this company. Preying on one of the most defenseless segments of the public such as the elderly is unforgivable. My father was a WWII veteran and finished his military career having been awarded the Silver Star. He then gave another 30 years’ service to this country as Civil Service on a military base. I sincerely hope the people that are responsible for screwing individuals such as my parents rot in hell.

In January 2010, my mom applied for $50,000 "guaranteed" life insurance. She received an additional "offer" for a $35,000 rider in April 2010, which she took. She was paying $156 a month due to the fact that she was a smoker who had quit but not for over a year. So she gladly paid the rates. She did this, because both her parents, 3 of her brothers, and 2 of her sons died in the previous 10 years and she didn't want her 2 surviving children to be left with any bill. She also wanted to leave small amounts for her grandchildren.

My mom had no insurance from June 2008 and hadn't seen any doctor, period. She told NY Life/AARP this. She was 100% honest. Everything was fine until October 2011 when she felt ill and I took her to the doctor. They sent her to the hospital, and all in 1 day, October 9, 2011, she was diagnosed with pneumonia, emphysema, and COPD. These came about with no signs of previous illness. My family of 5 moved in to help her get better, but suddenly her 2 cats died, mom's pneumonia wouldn't go away, and our 3 children got mysterious infections. It turned out she was back in the hospital in November 2011.

After tons of tests on our children and mom, it is determined that her entire home has been taken over by black mold! After her November 2011 ICU visit, my mom went 100% blind in response to the steroids they treated her with. Since nothing could be cleared up due to the rapid deterioration of her health and her blindness, momma gave up and she passed away on February 6, 2012. NY Life/AARP decided that it is impossible to die from emphysema in less than 6 months. We provided all the medical records from October 2011 to her death. But it's been almost 6 months. The house was condemned. Our children have just now completed their antibiotic treatments, and NY Life has decided that "somehow" mom knew she was sick.

I loved my momma and miss her daily. And trust me, if she was sick, we would have known because my beautiful momma loved her attention(!) (in a funny way, you know) and she would have told us! Anyway, now NY Life is fighting with a 2008 doctor my mom saw (They treated her for 1 case of bronchitis and a car accident in early 2008.), and the doctor is quoting HIPPA law and refuses to release anything. So basically, we are left with tons of debt and hateful cruel responses from the insurance company. She would not have paid that $156 if she knew they would have made our lives hell. We asked 1 of the underwriters "How can you sleep at night knowing you are making people's lives hell like this?" Her response? "Knowing I am making money and will get a bonus, Ma'am." They are cold-hearted, hell-bound people.

What NY Life gave them was a group life and because my mom signed the paper, they now will not pay her life insurance -- leaving my dad to pay the funeral cost that he cannot afford.

I have read a lot of people who had the same problem. I feel that NY Life through AARP is pulling a bait and switch with the elderly knowing that they will not read the paper work that is sent to them because they told them it was the guaranteed life they were getting. My parents never received a copy of the insurance policy and I called 2 weeks before my mom passed away to ask for one. They never sent one. The day of her funeral, the funeral director told me that it was being contested. So we waited for 2 months.

We got a denial letter in the mail from them stating that my mother had things done by her doctor that canceled out her policy. I sent an appeal letter and with the second denial letter, we finally got a copy of the policy and found that they put them in a group policy instead. The only contact they made with me was a letter in December stating they are still investigating. I have buried my father and have a funeral bill that needs to be paid. I do not have that type of money. They didn't even state a reason for denying the claim. I feel I am owed that much a reason. I just don't understand these complaints. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see a common denominator as to why some of you people have had problems. Most of your loved ones were under the 2 year point of contestability when they passed. The company must be careful fraud was not an issue when your loved ones filled out the forms. That is very legitimate depending on how your loved one passed considering they claimed good or decent health when they filled out the forms.

I promise you that even though it takes longer to check things out, if everything is found to be on the up and up, you will not only get the check, you will get an additional amount for the delay in processing the check from the date of death. If this wasn't you salivating to get a big check in the mail quickly and take a sigh of relief, you got a freebie you'd have to admit what a good company they are that even honors a policy where the amount is at least and more likely 10 times the amount a newer policy holder has actually invested in it and although they claimed decent health, suddenly they die in less than one to two years of complications that may have disqualified them.

The complaints come off very childish demanding a quick check on a policy that is still considered new. Either that or a person just can't read properly when it comes to the policy and what process will happen to someone who is under the two year mark with the policy. If it seems to be taking a long time to get medical records to an underwriter, get up and go to your loved ones' doctor and get the records yourself and send them priority mail certified. Someone from AARP doesn't have to tell you to do this. That should be a given if you are in charge of the deceased persons estate or personal matters.

In fact, after reading the policy handbook, before you even asked for a claim form from AARP, you should have seen you would be required to provide that type of information so being thorough in advance might have helped. You'd be surprised how slow some doctor's offices are in getting that information sent out if you simply request them to do the ground work. When my father passed, his doctor took forever to send in the cause of death to complete his death certificate. We were surprised because of course, it was our father but in reality doctors are busy and these types of requests may sit around the office considered non priority compared to daily on hands care. I also have to be honest about a beneficiary on a policy like this who wonders if they will be getting anything because of the nature and timing of the death.

You'd have to be honest, more than likely you've been crossing your fingers that if you can just bypass being too thorough with the medical issues, AARP will overlook certain things and you will get the check quickly. The game is that suddenly the beneficiary who capitalizes on a new policy plays the victim but way down deep inside, they know if it doesn't work in their favor, they shouldn't have put much hope in that new policy for honest reasons.

After sending the information to AARP (Certified), call back and check after 7-10 days of receipt and ask what they have determined. By the way, I hate to say this but even though a person didn't know they had cancer the same year they got their policy, there might be an issue about not contacting the underwriter after diagnosis and before death. If I were an underwriter for a policy like this, I'd have to take into account time of policy opening to time of diagnosis and death and I may accept the policy but cover only so much. My thinking would be whoever was helping to pay the bills monthly on behalf of the policy holder as they declined in health were obviously fully aware of the policy when making sure the payments were made and they never got hold of us to let us know.

We may have been more inclined to fulfill the entire amount or quickly advise that the policy is void and there is no more payments required but with no knowledge all along and demanding money quickly, it seems very questionable. Someone was taking a chance. I would question it which then leads me to question the original forms and just how truthful the policy holder was. To someone desperate for free money that sounds annoying, but sit on the other end of the situation. Someone is about to lose some money on a policy where very little was invested on the policy holders part. If you even get half of it, I'd say this was a very good company. It's not AARP's fault.

I will offer you this much info of myself. Having dealt with AARP and two deceased relatives, one was under the two year contestability requirement. They also were diagnosed with cancer after only 8 months of purchasing a policy. However, I contacted AARP quickly. They were shocked I'd contacted them. In 7 days, I had a letter from an underwriter stating the policy would remain as is. I was very prepared to accept a choice to discontinue the policy and therefore end any further payments. I simply would not have told my father. Of course, I never played the victim nor did I sit around seeing dollar signs when it came to an insurance policy.

There was blood shed, some gashes, contusions, etc. She was taken for an autopsy by the coroner (they requested). According to that report, the primary cause of death was drowning (accidental). Other significant conditions contributing to but not result of death is combined drug intoxication. My sister went to the doctor on October 18th and had 2 shots (one in left and one in right buttocks). The band aids were still in place when we found her on the 20th.

The family feels that she died on October 18th as her cell phone record shows the last time she was in contact with someone was the 18th. According to AARP NY Life they are awaiting medical records from her doctor to check for pre-existing conditions as policy in force less than two years. How can drowning be considered a pre-existing condition? I feel that they are just holding this claim up for no good reason. Funeral expense is thus to be paid. After reading the complaints/reviews on this site, I really became worried about my mother’s policy. Her contract began in 2005. She answered all the questions honestly. In 2005 along with the 2 previous years, she was in excellent health. It was like pulling teeth to even get her to go see a doctor. At that point in her life. flash forward to 2010 and sadly my mother has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. It is terminal and we are in the final stages. Looking through all her papers to make sure everything is in order I came across her policy. I was a bit surprised to see it. She said she got it to help out with final expenses. I thought it was so sweet but noted one thing.

She had not mentioned on her application that she had been told she probably had Post Polio Syndrome. The truth is my mom to date has never been clinically defined as having PPS as there have never been any emergency health complications in relation to it. I wondered if not providing this information would nullify her contract. Add to the fact, I did some googling and read some of these horror stories and pretty much assumed the worst. The one thing I also checked on was that there really isn't even a mention of it on any of her medical records nor is PPS considered fatal but we wanted to be honest so I gave AARP a call.

I was very honest and explained the situation. The costumer representative was a bit surprised I was offering this information but she made a note and emailed the information to an underwriter. Her biggest concern was not full disclosure at the time the contract began but I explained there really was full disclosure. She had no medical problems back then nor did she have any medical professional define her as having PPS during any exams in her entire adult life to the date of the 2005 contract. The costumer representative was very kind and said we'd hear back from the underwriter within 24 hours. We heard nothing and I called the following day.

The second costumer representative was a bit different. Again, they were also shocked. I was concerned about this issue before a policy holder has passed and he said don't worry about it. I wasn't worried. I was concerned if the contract was void so there is no need for her to continue monthly payments up until her death. At that point, it would have been tacky to let her pay knowing it would not be honored after her death. Again, reading these posts here pretty much convinced me things weren't going to work out well and in a way, it was best to know now instead of possibly being surprised after her death and trying to get the benefits. Now get ready for the final outcome.

As of this date, I have nothing but high praise of AARP. Today, we received a letter thanking us for our honesty. After noting the PPS information on the contract they are willing to let the contract stand as is. My sweet mother wept with joy today, as she wanted so much to make sure she could leave a little something after her passing. I am truly sorry for those that have encountered horrible situations with this company but thus far I have zero complaints. I do want to point out that it appears many of the complaints seem to be about newer policy holders and I would think there would be an understanding that if the deceased was under the 2-year situation, you would understand why they have to check every thing out.

To those who may have had multiple health issues that weren't addressed that may have been hard to acquire insurance some place else my advice would have been to please be honest. You may be surprised what they will allow but don't be offended if you are rejected or pay a higher premium. So to those like me who are reading some of these complaints and getting a little worried, rest assured not everyone feels jerked around by this company and if you are worried give them a call now rather than later.

To make matters worse, AARP sends me an acceptance letter for life insurance under my name with my dad's birthday every month! As if it doesn't hurt enough that he's not here anymore!

Our dad had two life insurance policies with AARP. Life House Parkview Health Care Facility was the payee. They were supposed to pay AARP monthly but according to AARP, Life House stopped paying on Jun 3, 2010. AARP said they mailed the statement to Life House Parkview but the latter said they never got it. I just found out about it last July 14, 2010. My dad is losing one of his life Insurance policies he opened around eight years ago.

I had a life insurance policy on my husband through AARP. When he passed away, there were absolutely no problems obtaining the benefit I was promised. They acted quickly and promptly, knowing that many times widows/widowers need to pay bills.

    1. NY Life Insurance Company let their Korean agent Suk-Ku ** continue to sell their products for over 12 years even though many customers sent Suk-Ku **'s fraud selling complaints: NY Life is the godfather of this fraud and scam actions, not only their agent.

    2. Suk-Ku ** became a millionaire by selling NY Life products in Korean community. He continues to sell life insurance in fraudulent way: He made me pay $3000 a month till age 55 to get a $3,000,000.00 Retirement Life Insurance" which was a "nonexistent policy" from NY Life; it was fraud.

    3. Because ** was able to sell life insurance in fraudulent way without any kind of problem from NY Life company, ** took my name out of my workers’ compensation insurance policy to make me pay less premium to be able to pay the $3,000.00 without my knowledge; fraud and scam action.

    4. I lost benefits from my workers’ compensation policy after my work-related single car accident because I was too tired from too much work that week; $1,000,000.00 coverage for 10 years.

    5. There are so many victims by NY Life Insurance Company and agent ** over 12 years in Korean community who all already signed a "Be quiet and non-suit" letter from NY Life. I did not sign so I am still fighting on the street: Picketing in front of NY Life company offices in NY and Tysons Corner, VA from time to time.

Please check on "YouTube.com and search "New York Life Insurance Fraud". I will also send a full story if you needed it later. Please help the victim. I have no one to help me or all other victims. I go to 51 Madison Avenue, NY NY office to picket from time to time especially on 01/03/2011 to get justice that the victims deserve.

After four months of waiting, I finally heard that NYLife has sent a check for only $3000. Not the $50,000 my husband was insured for. They claimed we answered wrong on the application. Beware, if you are taking medications, they count that as treatment even though there is no question regarding medications. We were under the impression that treatment meant things like x-rays, cancer treatment, etc. I have canceled my life insurance with AARP and purchased it elsewhere.

My father had an insurance policy with them for years and I know that he paid a lot in it but I was only told it was 10,000.00 dollars.

Well, I was the beneficiary of his life insurance and some reason AARP dealt with my brother and I know there was more insurance. Anyhow, my brother took it and cashed it or gave it to main and frame funeral home; I did not get the rest of it. Anyways, an insurance place, especially as long as my dad paid, should have been an agent helping me out since I was the beneficiary. My dad was Kenneth ** lived at **

I want this resolved or answered. I did not get what was coming to me.

On 9/3/08, both my husband and I took out $50,000 life insurance policies with AARP. My husband passed away on 8/18/10, just about 2 weeks short of 2 years, so we have to have his records reviewed. Every time I call about it, I am told they are still waiting for a response. My husband had counted on this insurance so I would have something to fall back on and pay his final expenses. So much for AARP being helpful to seniors. After reading other complaints, I am not too encouraged.

I purchased a term life insurance policy for my husband approximately four years ago after he retired. New York Life through AARP was happy to draft my checking account for the monthly premiums. This month the premium increased with no notification from New York Life - AAPR. When I called to question the increase, NYL would not talk with me because the policy is on my husband. I only wanted to know "why" the premium increased, no other information. They draft from my account, therefore, I feel I have the right to ask why the draft amount increased!
