Had an account with Navy Federal for years. At least 3 times this year I’ve had my account compromised. Just the other day they closed my account completely down because someone hacked into my account on a computer and took my money. Then they made me pay over $100 back to them because of this. Not only did they do that they took $700 of my money that I sent to my mother. I’m a hard working mom and I can’t believe this even happened to me!! My son can’t enjoy Christmas because of this. I will never trust them ever again. They are scammers and liars.

My spouse and I are both vets. After reading the great reviews, I applied for and was granted a Navy FCU membership for a 2ND home in Florida, however we were not able to access their mortgage site after repeated attempts. I reached Chris at the call center and was advised this brand-new account will be closed and was flagged for fraud because I am not me, or we are not we. What???? Furthermore, the expected wait times via phone for the Security Team to rectify this mistake was nearly 2 hrs. I understand they have a job to do, but we don't appreciate the way it was handled. This account is not even 24 hrs. old and already experienced issues that could’ve been resolved had they simply reached out.
The First issue was zero attempts were made to notify us and verify security information when contact information is on the account, including the security questions. The 2nd issue was the 2-hr. hold time after being transferred since we couldn’t dial the security team directly according to Chris. They just flagged it and expected us to wait 2 hrs. on the phone for the honor of us unlocking our info and transferring funds.... No Thank You. Navy FCU did us a favor if this is what we can expect. Went to another local Credit Union in Florida without issues. It appears Navy FCU could care less… but we did. Date of experience: December 07, 2022.

I am a 74-year-old, disabled Vietnam veteran and I rely on my credit in the event of emergencies. After sustaining roof damage during Hurricane Ivan, I submitted an online application with Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) for a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC). My intention was to repair the roof using the funds from the HELOC while I await my insurance settlement.
I received an email requesting a telephone interview from Sila **, Equity Processing Specialist | Real Estate Lending, ** | Vienna, VA | 22180. On Friday, 10/28/2022, during our very first telephone conversation, Ms. ** outlined that there would be approx. $2000 in closing costs and that the roof would “probably” have to be replaced BEFORE they could approve the loan. I immediately responded by instructing her to “withdraw my application”. She replied "okay". She agreed to withdraw my application.
She then called me back a few minutes later and stated that "by law, they must record my loan as declined". That is absolutely untrue. My loan was not declined, nor had they even offered me the loan or completed the interview. It was in fact withdrawn. She then stated that it would not be reported to credit agencies, but would be marked as declined only in the NFCU internal records. This too is unacceptable. In my opinion, it’s the equivalent of accepting a jail sentence for a crime you didn’t commit.
I have a long-standing and blemish-free relationship with Navy Federal. Over my years as a member, I have referred dozens of borrowers to NFCU. I will not allow my record with NFCU to be tarnished because I withdrew a loan application. I'm not trying to be unreasonable but, I take my credit extremely seriously and they are threatening to disrupt my years of hard work by fraudulently recording my application as “declined”. They DIDN'T decline my loan, I WITHDREW my application.
All I am asking for is the truth. The records must be corrected and the application recorded as withdrawn. When I demanded that they do so, they pivoted to well if we had continued it may have been declined due to the debt-to-income ratio, but that was after I had already demanded that they withdraw the application. What would have happened is irrelevant following the withdrawal of my application.

I have been w/ Navy Fed for over 13 yrs and never seen this. Someone submitted a fraud claim against the account (online) so that they can get the "Provisional credit" and then transfer to another. I have the card etc, apparently these people did took the card numb digitally and accessed the account by "By passing" the info needed to get into the account for an online fraud claim. (How???) By the way I tested to see what they were talking about and this is not true. You cannot bypass info if you forget your password. Anyway, they took the provisional credit of their fraud claims and transferred it to was a Farajii ** (right away) & attempt to get a loan, of course we don't know this person. We closed this acct and reopened another after the fraud dept started their investigation.
A week later they took the neg bal from the closed account we are disputing and added it to the new account, we called in, they said we had to do a separate fraud claim for the transfer that can take up to 10 bus days.. (Keep in mind we spoke to a fraud supervisor originally who saw and knew what this poeple did) so not only did they take the money that was in the account now a return check fee is added. No food/no way to get money/no way to put gas in the car. They are the worse, my next stop is a formal complaint which is going out today. Don't bank with them, their security is not what they claim it is.

I am a veteran of the U.S. Navy and in my capacity as a Naval Intelligence Officer served at seas, overseas and on the Joint Staff during my service in the U.S. Navy. I have been a Navy Federal Credit Union member for roughly 30 years and have always made my payments on time. It has been my experience that what was once great organization and service that was focused on service members has been in decline for several years. I recently closed my Platinum Credit Card account completely after the following event. I fell and suffered a head injury and was hospitalized. From bed, I made my credit card payment the day after the day the payment was due. It took Navy Federal Credit Union 48 hours to process the payment. At the end of the day, on the day the payment was due, and I was in the hospital, Navy Federal Credit cut off the use of my credit card. On that very day.
Then, despite the fact that I had made the payment, my card was not available to me for another 48 hours. My wife and I have sterling credit ratings and are completely debt free. We've always avoided debt and I have almost always made any credit card payments in full so there was no balance due. Navy Federal Credit Union's actions could have had a negative impact on our credit ratings. In my opinion, the management of Navy Federal Credit Union is now run by people who care only about money and being paid precisely on time regardless of the members' circumstances. Moreover, even when the payment had been made, Navy Federal Credit took up to 48 hours to process the payment! During that time my platinum credit card was cut off.
Ultimately, I would tell any service member to stay away from this organization. Do not believe the inflated rhetoric and marketing statements advertising how much Navy Federal Credit Union cares about its members. Regardless of an outstanding credit rating, history of on-time payments and excellent financial status, Navy Federal Credit Union will also cut you off and leave you without needed access to credit, regardless of your circumstances! Beware!

I was told that Navy federal accepts credits on account before debits. They bounced a check to my rental company because they did not honor this process. When I called and asked them to honor it, they refused. I was very upset because this cost me additional money on each end and a small dose of embarrassment. I expressed my frustration and the following day a second representative called to threaten my future banking with them. This company has gone downhill, not to mention the nerve of them.

We opened a campus checking account for my son who was going to college. As soon as he moved on campus his account was hacked. Though Navy Federal "suspected fraudulent activity" they did not notify us until a week later after thousands of dollars were taken from the account. The branch representative automatically accused my son of being involved (he wasn't) with absolutely no proof. The only way to deal with this was to call their security line- wait times are routinely over 2 hours to speak to a person who again without any information was very accusatory.
They locked my son out of his account so he has no account information but will not speak to me even though I am a co-owner of the account. It's been over two weeks and we've still not received any contact from Navy Federal. When this happened with another account with a different bank, we received real-time notification of the fraud and the matter was cleared up in 5 minutes with one phone call. We have notified every regulatory committee possible and will fight this as Navy Federal offers a "Zero Liability" policy for this type of activity. Please read more reviews- this apparently is not an uncommon problem and Navy Federal seems to ruined lots of credit reports!!!!

If you are a 100% disabled veteran it's a waste of time applying to Navy Fed, especially when they charge you to run your credit report. The reason being is they WILL NOT factor in the tax credit you receive if you live in TX, FL, and other states that allow the credit. They still factor the tax in your DTI even though you will not pay it. So without them factoring it in my payment would be $2,900 with the tax credit my monthly would be $1,900 and under 45% DTI. It is a guaranteed zero property tax credit payment by those states so they are screwing over 100% disabled veterans and losing so much business. So 100%ers don't waste your time and go figure they're supposed to be supporting the military and veterans!

I have been an NFCU member since I was 4 years old. Just in case that matters. I was trying to purchase a vehicle through my LLC with myself as a Personal Guarantor. Since my LLC is brand new, many lenders are not willing to do the loan, but I was told by one of their phone agents in their business solutions dept that NFCU would, all I would have to do is do the loan in my name, apply for a business account, and as soon as that account was created, I could immediately refi the loan under my LLC with myself as a PG. I was LESS THAN THRILLED with the interest rate I was offered since I have excellent credit, but I said to heck with it, I'll just do the deal and at least I can refi it in my business name, at which point I can put more cash down possibly or just pay it down quicker.
So I did the auto loan with NFCU *under my name* (which means it will show as an open account on my *personal credit* which was what I was trying to avoid by doing it under my LLC with myself as a PG, in which case it would not show as an open account). I then did the business account application and called in a few days later (as instructed) to go through the steps. I was then told NFCU would not do business with me as a business account because I had put "cryptocurrency consulting" as the purpose of my business. I AM SO BEYOND MAD I AM ALMOST AT A LOSS FOR WORDS.
First, to be clear, I explained to NFCU that my business has NOTHING to do with buying, selling, trading, or holding cryptocurrency. READ THAT AGAIN: NOTHING. My business consists ENTIRELY of meeting with clients and explaining to them how money, finance, and investing IN GENERAL works; as it happens, I happen to know quite a lot about bitcoin and I have found that the vast majority of investors these days want to understand it better. So, as PART of my service, I educate clients on how bitcoin works and why it will be important for the future. I do not sell it to them, buy it for them, create accounts for them--NONE OF THAT. I only educate them on how it works. 100% of what they gain or lose by buying bitcoin--IF THEY CHOOSE TO BUY IT--is on them. I do not benefit in ANY way from it. ALL I DO IS EDUCATE and my clients pay me for my time.
I have a 10-hour curriculum, only 3 hours of which has anything to do with bitcoin. The rest is education on what money even is, where currencies come from, hard money standards vs fiat money standards, the time value of money, compound interest, dollar cost averaging, etc. It is completely STANDARD investment education. I just HAPPEN to be knowledgeable about bitcoin where many other financial advisors are not, so I market myself as specializing in it. THAT IS ALL. ALL I DO IN CONSULT, as my application says "consulting." I do not have a Series 6, 7, 63, or ANY securities licenses because I DO NOT NEED THEM for my service. ALL I DO is offer an educational course which has a bitcoin component.
And for this reason, NFCU is spraying its shorts and refusing to approve my application? Because someone saw the WORD "cryptocurrency" and evacuated their bowels?? And all this AFTER I did a personal loan that I didn't want to do bc the rate is TERRIBLE (how are you gonna offer someone with an 800 beacon an 8% rate on a 2019 car??), and it's about to show up on my PERSONAL credit. Talk about a bait and switch! This is so far beyond outrageous I'm almost speechless.
I work in the car business as my primary occupation. I could have EASILY gotten a personal loan approved at a MUCH better rate by going with one of my dealership's in-house lenders rather than NFCU. I only went with NFCU because I was told I could refi my loan under my LLC with myself as a PG. And now I'm told I can't and for no good reason. I am not SELLING anything--except my knowledge. I could understand NFCU not wanting to get in bed with me if I was, say, trying to start a cryptocurrency exchange--very risky--but I'm not. This is just a side business that consists of me offering an educational course I wrote myself.
I appealed their decision with the above information and was STILL denied "due to the nature of my business having to do with cryptocurrency." Absurd. I said all I actually do is educate people. They don't care, they're too dumb to acknowledge that point because their brains are short-circuiting over the word "crypto currency." Well, that would've be fine and all IF I HADN'T BEEN PREVIOUSLY TOLD IT WOULD BE NO PROBLEM. What a bait and switch! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH NFCU. Worst financing experience I've had in my life!!!

I deposited a $5000.00 check into my business account. Said should be available in 2 days. Then I woke up this morning to my account $4585.00 overdrawn. I call them to get the run around stating their security department put an additional hold on the check for another 5 days. I said, "That don't explain why you have my account overdrawn when there was a positive balance when I went to bed last night. And there is no way for me to overdraw my account that much." Oh they credit me the money back to make my account positive, yet they still can't tell me why the check has an additional hold. I talked to the client. They said their account has several milllion in it and we do a lot of work for this company and never had an issue. Call Navy Fed back and still getting the run around. Now I can't make payroll all because navy federal wants to ** me and play games. I'm Closing this account as soon as all my funds are available. Stay away.

NFCU has been our "go to" bank for years. However, these last few months, June/July 2022 their customer service has fallen below acceptable. Getting a representative online has taken me a minimum of 20 minutes and some were projected to be one hour! No call back options are offered either! So, going into the brick-and-mortar bank on Brookhurst in Foutain Valley our wait time was over 1/2 an hour! We came back as we had another appointment and had to wait yet again!
The personnel are very kind and courteous but obviously the upper management has some explaining to do. So, what happened to military protocol or the axiom "the customer always comes first?" In addition I cannot get anyone in management to contact me. I hope this will help. Meanwhile, if you only bank online ok; but if you have a problem beware. Also, lately, hacking around the two step verification process as been a problem, too. Us and see other posts. They need a security update for sure.

I have been a member since 2014 and I left active service in 2020. The change in service has been very drastic and disappointing. They are not as forgiving, not as thoughtful, no compassion. I did leave during Covid so maybe that changed their policies. I couldn’t get a loan, my interest rates increased, fees for everything, hidden policies, I felt like I was banking with Wells Fargo all over again. If it wasn’t for my credit I would’ve been left. I’ve been banking with usaa for the past year and I think I’m ready transition because this is unacceptable treatment for a veteran, it almost feels like discrimination.

I’m posting my experience here, in addition to the Navy Federal Facebook page, to voice my concerns that Navy Federal is in urgent need of process improvement to address gaps between their member application and loan application processes. For reader context, I am a joint applicant with 800+ credit, $275k+ income and low DTI, looking to finance a second home. My loan request has been pre-approved and is with underwriting pending home selection.
I understand the need to apply for membership as a prerequisite for a mortgage, but Navy Federal does a POOR job implementing it and ensuring that the application process is integrated with the loan application process. This results in weeks of delays vs. competitors, even if things go right. When they don’t go well, such as in my case, it gets worse. My member application was flagged by security for potential ID theft, even after I paid the membership fees for both myself and my wife, plus the credit report fee for the mortgage loan application. This results in a confusing state where the automated system keeps pumping out emails as it moves through the process, but no one is able to take your calls because the member application is flagged. It’s a cliché left hand ignorant of the right hand scenario.
My biggest recommendation would be to improve the coordination between the membership application process and the loan application process as the two are so out of sync that I received an email yesterday introducing me to the Title Service team while at the same time getting an email from the security team saying my membership application was denied. Then this morning another email came in once again requesting a copy of a purchase agreement for the mortgage team.
I’ve spent at least 6 hours over the past week doing everything I can to correct what I am certain is an erroneous error on Navy Federal’s part, and the first time the security team contacts me to is deny my membership rather than to provide anything positive and helpful to move forward. The security team is virtually unreachable by phone in the afternoons and the mortgage department knows this, but the teams take a not-my-problem approach and place the burden on the the member to figure out, all while thinking its acceptable to keep moving the loan package further. I honestly can’t tell if the mortgage teams ~do~ realize the impacts of a stalled member application and don’t care, or ~don’t~ realize it and need to be informed that all the stuff they keep sending isn’t important if I can’t resolve my member application issues and actually login to my account to upload loan documents.
The constant barrage of emails from the Mortgage Loan team only serves as proof that Navy Federal can do better to ensure all teams are more informed of members’ application status and any issues pending resolution. Any email not focused on solving the members problem only exacerbate the frustration the member is feeling. It may be insightful to share one mortgage team member’s advice (paraphrased) during a recent phone call that underscores how insensitive that department is to member issues, which was “you’ll have to talk to the security team but they have a really long wait time…you may just want to let the membership cancel and get a refund. Want me to transfer you?” Seriously, that conversation is in the call logs.
It’s good to see Navy Federal posts bragging that their employees are happy and they are offering a service many members appreciate, but I can honestly say that was not my experience. I observed an under-resourced security team who could only afford to cancel applications instead of investigate, a mortgage team that is disconnected and unsympathetic to new member issues, and 3rd parties such as the Title Loan service team who are contacted way too early. All of this appears to stem from the organization’s dependence on an automated system that can’t pump the breaks when there is an issue or provide shared understanding across all departments.
In a market where homes list and sell in days, Navy Federal’s internal processes prevent you from being competitive. Unfortunately, after investing a week of my time only to be told the security team would strive to resolve my issue in 15 days, I will not be continuing my mortgage application or pursuing Navy Federal membership in general. I encourage Navy Federal to use my case to investigate what went wrong and what can be improved.

I have financed and paid off vehicles with NFCU so I know the process. So when the lien paperwork arrived in the mail, I filled it out and returned it in the addressed envelope provided. About a month passes and I received another letter. I discarded it because it must've been sent in error. Some time passes and I receive another. I decided to just go ahead and fill it out and send it back. Some more time passes I get a notification tag on my door from UPS. I had no idea what it was because I was not expecting anything. Apparently, this UPS package was "signature required" and they kept trying to deliver it within the 9am-5pm work day while I was, ummmm, actually at work! During this time, I noticed my payment had been increased. And after speaking to several representatives, I found out the package was from NFCU. They were trying to send me the title. All they could say was that it should not be "signature required" but it was!!
What?!!! Ultimately, the title got sent back because I was never home when they tried to deliver it. The rep then told me, my payment would remain increased until they received notice that the title was signed over. They insisted that they didn't receive the signed paperwork that I had sent to them TWICE! I was then presented with the option to wait until they resent the title back to me. Meanwhile, I'd be paying more for my payment. I requested to speak with a manager because this was bogus! I had to wait for a call back, which took a day or 2. After speaking with him, I was presented with 2 options....wait for them to send it back to me and process through DMV myself or bring it to the branch and they would process it but would take longer.
I am the veteran and a very busy single sports mom...I didn't have time to take off work to walk this through DMV or keep paying the increased auto payment. And in regards to the payment, all they kept saying was, "You MAY get reimbursed for the overage after they receive the paperwork but that determination would be made in a different department."
In the midst of all of this, I received another set of paperwork in the mail for the lienholder. I signed it and sent it back in the self-addressed envelope again. I wanted to sent it with tracking but I had missed the PO that Sat and I did not want to wait so I dropped it inside the PO slot. After a little over a week, I called NFCU again. They stated that they had not received it. The lady asked the address I had sent it to. I told her it was the envelope that came with it...a Florida address. Then, I remembered, I had taken a picture of it at the PO. I told her the address and she told me that that was not the correct address...that address was to a branch. THIS WAS THE SELF-ADDRESSED ENVELOPE THAT CAME WITH THE LETTER! What kind of game is this?!!! She then said that I should go into the branch and sign the papers and let them send it.
I was shocked...this was an option over these last 2 months??!!!! Why didn't any of the other reps/managers tell me this from the beginning!!! That Sat morning, I went into the branch and did just that...EASY! Meanwhile, I'm paying the inflated payment and it's not likely I'll get my money back! About 4 more weeks have passed and I called because my payment hasn't changed and I haven't heard anything. I called today and while they did receive the paperwork, it's still being processed so I won't see my regular payment reinstated until it's complete.
I asked the rep about receiving my funds back. She told me that I would NOT be receiving anything back because "it's been an ongoing process to receive the paperwork". Are you freaking kidding me! I asked her, "Have you looked at ALL the notes and how long I've been talking to you guys to get this straight?!!!" Yes it's been an ongoing process with YOU guys, not me!!! I'm not done because this is absolutely ridiculous!!!! It's been almost 20 yrs and I've managed to have a semi-decent relationship with NFCU. I've heard negative stories but was happy to not be a part of one. Well, I guess it was my turn. They have been very unhelpful and up until the rep before this last one...No one cared!

For the first time in years received a paper payroll check and deposited that check at my local NF ATM. I called days later to see why the full check had not been deposited. To my surprise, I was told a 5 business day hold was on my check b/c it 'looked like it wouldn't clear'. Called my employer, found out that was not true. They offered to provide verification if NF would call them. Then I contacted my coworkers. Everyone in the building had their money except the 3 of us who had Navy Federal. Also found out from another employee who deposited their check days after I deposited mine, they had received their money *the same day*. Their check was more money than mine. How is that possible. Called NF back, no explanation for any of this, just stonewalling. In addition to this, they refused to call my employer to verify the check. This is the poorest service I have ever received from a bank or credit union. NF you just lost a long term customer.

FIRST AND FOREMOST MY HUSBAND IS A 100% DISABLED VETERAN WITH DIRECT DEPOSIT FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS. So it went without question that we recommended them to our daughter when she was ready to purchase her first vehicle on her own. They FLAT OUT denied her when she has near perfect credit. She turn right around and apply with another institution and was approved for over $60,000. Then my husband applied for a platinum Visa with well over a six and a half figure income to only be told they need 2-3 days to make their decision on whether or not do even approve him.
Implying that a ** MAN is not able to obtain that type of income, when they are the institution that houses most of our finances monthly. So we are going to flash forward to me being in a professional field where I handle credit scores and finances. One of my clients, A ** MAN (former soldier) with under a 625 credit score and less monthly income of my husband was able to walk into NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, complete a signature loan for $25,000 no questions asked. WILL NOT RELEASE FUNDS OR SPEAK TO A MANAGER TODAY. I unfortunately do not have the luxury of direct deposit with my employer. Manual Paychecks are released at 4:30pm on payday. My last payday was Friday, March 25, 2022. That day I purchased a newer vehicle at a dealership and received the loan through this bank. It took well over an additional one hour on the phone and well over a half an hour in a local branch to complete this after receiving a preapproval.
Due to their delays, my paycheck was submitted after their 6:00pm deadline. If submitted prior to that time, after the very small amount released after the check is approved, the remainder is released on the next day (Saturday). Per a call to the bank today, Monday, March 28, 2022; I am being told the remainder of my funds will not be available until Tuesday, March 29, 2022. This is 4 days after my check. Again due to their delays. I was also informed that I could not speak to a manager for 1 to 2 business days, due to their turnaround. This will be after my funds will be available. So, this bank is will to lose both my loan and banking, due to their delays. DO NOT DO any business with this bank or they will screw you.

My family and I have banked at Navy Federal for over a decade. My partner and I decided to make a big jump to try and purchase our first new home, and were excited to include our bank in the pre-approval process. With excellent credit scores, and high six figure incomes, our only concerns were with debt-to-income ratios due to student loans. After getting underwritten pre-approval with 3 other lenders, Navy Federal's loan representative was too busy to talk, incompetent, and unprofessional in handling our loan file.
As a result, she submitted our loan file with inaccurate information, refused to discuss the profile and help clean up the inaccuracies (there were duplicates on our credit profiles that all three other lenders identified and fixed while she refused to even discuss it), and we received an instant denial after paying an excessive credit pull fee (a fee that no other lender charged). I would not recommend this bank for any mortgage, especially with how ripe the market is with quality competent options.

I have a credit score over 700. My transparency on this matter is crystal. I have had issues with Navy Federal Credit Union dating back to 2008 and 2009 while deployed to Iraq. NFCU failed to uphold a portion of a contractual agreement. I was forced to pay hardship insurance on my credit card. An additional interest on the balance to cover your expenses incase of a hardship. My ex-wife files for divorce while I'm deployed. NFCU denies my hardship request lying and saying the request has to go through an outside agency. I contact the other company and was told no, I am to go through NFCU. They are the institution that receives payment. NFCU lies and say I denied coverage. As a ** man in America in 2008 and 2009 timeframe there is no denying anything that would fatten the corporate world pockets. Not to mention no factual documents can be generated by navy federal.
When asked for my contracts I was told that would take legal action. I assume a subpoena. NFCU also stole money out of my savings account. NFCU took the initial $5.00 you must use to start the account. The initial $5.00 the member can never take out of the account. There was never no agreement signed by me in 2008 or 2009 and any action for that was illegally enforced by NFCU. This place knowingly charge servicemembers over 6% interest knowing they are active duty. Navy Federal Credit Union is a corrupt, racist, non-patriotic organization. It gets former service member to be the face to give the façade of supporting troops. This company is the glorified veteran that goes around taking advantage of new servicemembers. Drag their feet with requiring the same forms be submitted multiple times, contact by several people besides your mortgage broker, "just one more thing" questions along every step of the process. Then, after running out the clock, "offer" you the benefit of purchasing an extension of your rate lock to continue the process. I've refinanced a couple of times, never with Navy Federal. UPDATE 2: After spending an hour on the phone with them this morning, I asked for a callback. I gave them specific times when I was available. A "Susan" called me 5 minutes before I had to go into a meeting. She promised to call back this evening and didn't. NFCU is pretty much saying: Go bank somewhere else. I'm happy to oblige.
UPDATE: Today I got an email saying that if I don't provide the document that takes the IRS 10-14 days to send within 5 days, they will deny my business application. Seems like NFCU really doesn't want business accounts. We opened a few personal accounts with Navy Federal Credit Union a few weeks ago. The process was fairly easy but when we tried to set up our online banking, they had several outages. We finally have our online accounts and access set up.
Opening a business account has proved to be much more difficult. You have to jump through a lot of hoops, provide documentation, and have NFCU's staff personally assist you on the phone. To make matters worse, they are only open East Coast hours. If you're on the West Coast, you have a smaller window to reach someone. It took me 3 days to speak to a person. Each time I called there were extensive hold times. When I did reach someone, they said they have had phone outages.
I completed the application online and have all of the numerous documents they require ready except an "EIN" certification that I have to get from the IRS. That's going to take 10-14 business days. I have opened quite a few business accounts in my day, I have never had to work this hard or wait this long to give an organization my business. I went with NFCU because a family member and others highly recommended them. So far, my experience has not been positive. I was going to close my accounts with a bigger mainstream bank but I've decided not to do that now.

NFCU calls itself a credit union, but they act like a big bank too big to fail. Their customer service is awful. I had recently moved and was trying to set up deferments on my accounts for the period of my move transferring from a foreign country back to the United States. I was one day late on posting a payment on my signature loan and I was blocked from entering my account. I set up a payment to pay the loan immediately. (First I would like to say, I set up to wire transfer $1000 from Fidelity that should have been deposited the day before, so I could pay my loan and the Navy Credit Union decline the wire transfer, please explain that logic to me.)
After I logged out and went into my account again the same day, I received the same message and couldn't enter my account and was taken to the page to make a payment. I check and there was no payment pending. I set up the payment again. This happen 3 times, remember they rejected my wire transfer from my fidelity account. I couldn't figure out what was happening. Then I found out that they had posted 3 payments to my fidelity account. You got to be kidding me. They never showed a pending payment. They blamed it on the software and told me there was nothing they could do about it, that they couldn't stop the process because it was done online and not by them.
I told them that they needed to address this with the enterprise system that they use for their own banking and the customer service representative told me they could not do that. I told her that was not true, that the thing with enterprise systems is they take recommendations from their customers for new features. I worked with large systems for half my life working for a software company and my clients included some of the largest dot coms and even companies who provided enterprise systems to customers. Otherwise, I know better.
This is not the only time I have had issues with the Navy Credit Union. That I have felt frustrated, this is just the one I am having today. Navy Credit Union, may want you to think they are a credit union, and maybe in some ways they are, but their customer service and their attitude are not one of a credit union. I have banked with a state employee's credit union in the past and a credit union through my job. Neither of those credit unions had customer service that was distant, defensive, and blamed the customer.
I have two loans right now with the credit union, and I have a plan to pay off all loans in 1/3 the time, and when I have them paid off, I am moving my money and my service to another bank. Most likely back to one of the other credit unions I had in the past since I am back living in the United States I have more options.

When I tried using my card to pay a bill my card was declined, so I call navy federal and was told the account was opened in error and I told the representative that the money deposited was for my current light bill and water bill and that I would be down to the branch to withdraw the funds. So, before I had that chance to withdraw the funds my accounts had 0 balance and I was told that money was transferred and adjusted to that account I had 10 years ago.

Navy Fed reminds me of the old school banks who are grossly concerned with their bottom line, the most restrictive requirements to get a loan, and little to have rates that are comparable.
3.1% with USAA and same with Navy. Go to Nerdwallet and compare Vet United (at your own risk), Navy Fed - (bad support, backwards online application - want purchase agreement before you can get a pre-approval). USAA was good, superior customer service/follow up with them not computer. Though USAA's interest rates and numbers for closing are a mixed bag. I would not recommend doing business with Navy Fed. Beware too of contingent upon purchase pushed by loan officer--"as long you pay this off by closing, we'll provide the loan." And if you can't, you lose the house and the money, nightmare!

I will leave separate reviews for other aspects of banking with NFCU but when it comes to business accounts, they're absolutely incompetent. In summary, NFCU is a community credit union that wants to be as powerful as a large financial institution but seemingly does not have a strategy other than "raise rates, nickel and dime". When it comes to Business banking, they're just clueless. They took their personal banking square peg and just shoved it through the round hole of business banking. It's like a cheap fast-food franchise trying to offer an elevated dining experience. It simply does not work. There is no dedicated team of representatives to talk to on the phone and the situation is even worse at the branches.
Most of their enhanced services are outsourced ("partnered") so expect a conflict of interest when dealing with investment accounts and mortgages. On the Business banking side of things, I can't even trust them to deposit a client check and for them to honor their own hold policy. They send you a confirmation email that they will hold it for 2 days and then they hold it for 7. Even when you call them out on their errors, they simply point the finger to someone else outside of NFCU, even the Fed. Absolutely terrible. USAA they are not! I've been with them for 28 years and I wish I had the energy to find a better bank for business accounts. Right now they're the devil I know.

After 3 attempts to do a mortgage they did not do any of them, because they can't even compete at a basic customer service level with any major or minor lender. They won't get back with you, they are inexperienced and they do not follow up. The last straw is when they refused to process a wire transfer to close on a loan, because they have exceedingly ridiculous internal controls that defy all logic and reason when it comes to service, but at least they are protecting me from wire fraud. I used the NFCU to refinance my house in June of 2021, and it is for a term of only ten years. The amount included monthly was for principal, interest, with escrow for insurance and taxes. Upon this refinance action I notified my long term insurance company, State Farm that their automatic deduction for homeowners insurance payments would be no longer necessary as NFCU would be paying it from escrow. The State Farm agent adjusted the automatic withdrawal to now accommodate six policies on my account instead of seven.
A month later I was notified by the State Farm agent that the homeowners policy was not being paid by the NFCU as we discussed. Upon my inquiring with an administrative person in the mortgage department of NFCU about this, I was told that they were not required to pay anything toward the homeowners insurance policy until the renewal date of May 4, 2022. They must have assumed that I was paying my homeowners policy annually instead of monthly, and therefore made no provision for this action.
I am being very kind in giving them credit for thinking about it at all. So, in my telephone discussion with a surly young woman in the mortgage department of NFCU, I asked if they expected me to not only pay them their monthly escrow amount of $ 258.00 but also pay State Farm and she said yes. The necessary amount to cover the insurance and taxes for the year should have been incorporated into the closing costs, so that I would not be paying for homeowners insurance and taxes twice. So, I stopped the automatic withdrawal for this account and began paying them only for the principal and interest, and allocating the remainder to State Farm and the Harnett County Tax Department as I had done for the last thirty plus years before using NFCU. This has lead to the NFCU stating that my mortgage is in a delinquent status when it was paid on the due date as specified.
I must also add that I have a truck, and a Visa account that have always been paid in a timely manner, as well as a signature loan that is one full year ahead in payments. What makes this worse is that their own insurance representative told me that either the necessary payments could be collected through escrow or I could pay it myself. I was just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt when I told her that we would leave it as is, at the time. This was a terrible mistake on my part and I will regret it forever. Now I must pay the money that they will not apply to anything or they will harm my credit, even though another lender has already agreed to refinance the mortgage within thirty days from now, for fifteen years and has no issue with me paying the taxes and insurance myself. I find the actions of NFCU in this manner to be totally unwarranted. I will even have to demand the refund of the unspent funds collected by NFCU when the house is refinanced, they are very tedious.

I’m a longtime Navy Fed customer and have all of my personal and business accounts with them, running about 1M through them annually. We are moving to a new state and I’m self employed so I expected a through examination when asking for a conventional mortgage. We own our current residence outright, credit scores well above 800, zero debt, a decade of high income earning and new home was to be a similar price. We were approved in September but ended up backing out of that home purchase after an inspection found significant issues and the seller wouldn’t budge so we found a new home, did another application, paid for another credit check and appraisal and were over a week in to escrow. We made the 1400 mile trip out there and back to inspect the home and all was good to go until we got a call stating our application has been denied because I’m self employed.
Navy Fed knew this all along and had my tax returns, my business records, etc. and had them for over six weeks and suddenly they realized they can’t give me a mortgage? We have wasted dozens of hours in what turns out to be a game for them. I’m going to find a lender that has a clue about how to assess lending risk and do business with them and as soon as I get settled I’m clearing out every penny of my assets that are parked at Navy Fed and never returning. They made our purchase experience hell and we may lose the house we are in escrow in. We were two days from our due diligence deadline after which I’d have lost my $15,000 deposit and I’d be hiring a lawyer to deal with Navy Fed. Today I went from highly recommending Navy Fed to telling others to avoid doing business with them at the risk of being treated like a kitty litter box.

We were excited to purchase our first home with Navy Federal. The rates seemed very good and online reviews from sites like NerdWallet rated the credit union highly. We should have looked at customer reviews of their mortgages, as I guess they are notorious for poor customer service and delays in this area. Our personal customer service experience fell short twice. The first time, our home builder killed himself, terminating our purchase contract. Navy Federal refused to refund our $1200 rate lock for weeks until they finally understood our purchase contract was void (several frustrated calls and emails later).
Also, we used their realtor service, which ended up being one of the worst decisions we made throughout the home buying process. Any "reward" we might have received from their realty plus program was a joke. We lost much more money than that due to our realtor. I would recommend choosing an agent based off their reviews, not an award.
Against our better judgement, we gave NFCU another chance when our offer was accepted on another home. Everything went off without a hitch at first. Everything was completed and we had our conditional approval. The only outstanding step was the appraisal, which we were assured would be completed no later than the 13th. Several days after the 13th passes, they tell us the appraiser can't complete the appraisal until a month after closing because we are in a "rural" area. We are located in a fairly large metropolitan area.
Some people we know who are banking with Wells Fargo live in the same area, had their offer accepted on a home a few weeks after us, and they are actually moving their closing up sooner. They are receiving the same mortgage product. Their appraisal was on time. So the problem is not our "rural area." Unless Navy Federal gets their act together and moves our appraisal up, we will bank elsewhere. Really disappointed because like I said, we really wanted to be loyal customers. In short, NFCU is good for checking accounts, not so much for mortgages.

I recently opened a personal checking and savings AND a business checking and savings. This is not my first business, but I didn't want to use a big bank this time, and expected quality customer service and more of a small town bank feel. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience at all. Opening the business account was a headache, because they essentially make you do it online, not in the branch. I immediately had issues completing the account opening and accessing the accounts online. I was then told that deposited checks would be held for anywhere from 2-5 days for the first 30 days, but then they wouldn't be once the account was more established, which I found acceptable. The problem came after that point, when the local branch would always put a 2 day hold (not what I was initially told, but I can handle that, so no big deal) and then their back office would extend that hold without any notice.
The first time it happened, they tried to tell me that the check was a higher risk item, and that was why they extended the hold. For reference, we had already received 2 checks from that exact client, into that exact account with zero issues. The next time they extended the hold past 2 days, they told me it was simply because they hadn't received the funds yet from the federal reserve, so I wouldn't have access until they received confirmation that the check would be paid. This time it was a cashier's check from a nationwide bank. When I brought that up, their excuse was that there are a lot of fraudulent cashier's checks. My biggest issue with all of this, is that there was ZERO communication to me about the fact that they extended the holds. No email, no message to contact them, no phone call. I ended up receiving a letter in the mail, that didn't arrive until after the hold was released anyway, so it was worthless.
At first, I was fine with giving up the conveniences and resources of a big bank if it meant that I would get treated like an actual customer and not just a number, but to be honest, I was treated better at the big bank plus they have a lot better online system, and a lot more resources for making my business run smoother. Looks like I'll be going back to them.

As soon as I saw the account was short $132, I called to talk to a representative that reassured me twice that the funds would be reverted back the same day. I check my account today and noticed a return check fee, part of the rent money still in the account, and to make matters worse the property manager pulled up while I am on the phone with a representative. I am livid about how I had to hold for 25 mins for their mistake.

Many years ago, I really loved Navy Federal Credit Union. I recently decided to leave big banking and take 2 very large accounts back to them. I am no longer active duty, but a veteran who was actually proud to be returning to do business with them. There is no way to express just how completely stunned, and disappointed at my experience over the last few months. I have not had a working account yet, all due to things that hsv3 been completely out of my control, and through no fault of Chase, which is one of the banks I was transferring from.
Then to top it off, I have had such horrible experiences with rude representatives on the phone. Along with 2 times being placed on hold for 42 minutes on one call, for which I finally hung up because I knew they were at that point closed, and I could be holding until the next day. Then to be told I should plan to be on hold for over an hour, just to get them to turn loose of money they took from my chase account, and though I have gone into branches to show my identity, they still will not close the account that they apparently opened just to get my money from chase, but then will not let me have access to no matter what I do.
Needless to say, I'm absolutely not leaving chase for an institution that operates like this. I do not know what happened to them, but it is not the same Navy Federal I was once a member of. There is no way I would entrust them with 200 dollars, much less 200k after this experience is finally handled. I'm not sure how they could still even be in business, given what this experience has been like. I am shocked that anyone would entrust them with anything. It has been such an inexcusable, and unpleasant experience from the start, and I only got as far as having them transfer the money from chase to open the account. I guess the only good thing to come from this, is that they have only held me in this hostage situation with a smaller transferred amount of money from my chase account.
I did not leave chase, nor did I transfer a large amount to Navy Federal, so they harmed me no further than just several months of being an absolute maddening nonsensical outrageous business model, disregard, disrespect of my time, while holding the money they managed to take from my bank account with Chase hostage, my going into branches to prove my identity OVER AND OVER, being tossed around, cut off, hung up on, or put on hold to infinity, etc., I will eventually finally be done with this hassle, and this institution and whatever happened to it forever. Thank GOD!! So I cannot at all ever again recommend navy federal credit union for anything, most especially business as important as one's finances. That's for sure.

I opened a business account with Navy Federal 5 months ago. It has been the worst experience of my life for owning a business. I am absolutely canceling my business with Navy Federal and opening with another bank. They put anywhere from 1 to 5 day holds on checks as small as $800. There's no way around it. You can't sign up for anything extra or change anything or do anything. It doesn't matter how good the check is. It doesn't matter about anything. I'm trying to build my business without using credit and being beholden to some crappy Bank like Navy Federal. I don't want to owe them no 18% interest on credit that they ** give me. It's **.
I do not recommend ever open in a business account for anyone under any circumstances with Navy Federal Credit Union. They don't understand business. They're not there to help. Everything is done on East Coast time so if you live on the west coast like I do you're pretty much up the creek. You can't get no help. You're screwed by the time zone difference and when they do help they tell you the wrong information. You got to call three times just to get the right information. We won't even go over how hard it was to get a business debit card. It took me 5 hours and 4 days in order to do it. It took me a whole another week just to get it to set up.
I warned you. Do not open an account with Navy Federal Credit Union. It will be the worst experience of your life. Please go to another bank. You have now been officially warned. Open an account with Navy Federal Credit Union at your own risk. You will be extremely disappointed with the service. You will be extremely disappointed with how the system works and they will hold your money to take your money to make their own money on your money with no valid reason and no valid excuse whatsoever. I have been a Navy Federal customer almost my entire life. I've had checking, savings, credit cards, auto loan, you name it, and have had an amazing experience with these products and the bank's phenomenal customer service. Of course I, incredibly incorrectly, thought I would have my home loan with them. I applied for a mortgage pre-approval with them and the process was an absolute nightmare. I have great credit, a great paying job, and more than enough saved for a 20% down payment on a home in my price range. My issue was apparently my student loans and my debt to income ratio being too high because of a mandatory 1% imposed by the bank as my calculated payment amount, even though that was not even near my actual payment.
Working with their loan processors/officers was just painful on getting them the documentation they stated they needed to get around this issue, and I felt they were more than slightly incompetent. They couldn't tell me what they actually needed in terms of documentation for their underwriters, and they had me do a bunch of work obtaining documents from my student loan servicer that made no difference, spending copious amounts of time on the phone that I didn't have.
Trying to get the Navy Federal loan processors to call me or email me in a timely manner just did not happen and I might have lost out on the house of my dreams if I had continued trying to figure out what they wanted and/or needed. I wasted so much time with them, but luckily my realtor recommended a local lender that has been responsive and capable and actually helped work through the student loan issue. For anything other than mortgage lending, Navy Federal is amazing. But if you need a mortgage, do not spend your time and effort with them, as you will only be wasting your time.

Well needless to say the Mortgage loan officer was unresponsive and unprofessional. I sent an email and called asking for her to call me and after 2 years she called. Let me clarify, they literally have a perfect, nothing missing, loan documents for the refi application and I got the pre approval to move forward. Got everything done including the appraisal and inspection 3 months ago. All throughout the application process I get maybe 4 response from them, rest of my email are ignore for months.. I should've came on here before I apply for the refi, could've gone to a local credit union and have a way better experience than this.
So to make a long story short, most people been stating over 5+ months of refi through them and some even randomly get approved all the way until the end and then they denied them the loan after all the waiting. I hope I am not in the same boat to get deny at the end but it seems I forget I even have a refi with them right now because haven't heard from them in a month and I was schedule to get the loan 5 weeks ago. Yesterday, while attempting to make a cash deposit at Navy Federal Credit Union located in Laurel Maryland, I experienced prejudice, intolerance and embarrassment. It was 38 degrees as I patiently waited in the entrance line forming down the sidewalk. The line moved fairly consistent so it wasn’t more than 5 to 10 minutes before I was invited to walk in.
Upon entering, the person at the door stated, “There is hand sanitizer in the center, proceed to the open teller”. “I can’t use alcohol-based sanitizers,” I replied. A 2nd attempt at forcing me to use some unknown chemical product was made. I asked Chris, the person attempting to force compliance “show me Navy Federal's policy that denies a veteran access for not using hand sanitizer if they have a medical condition.” At this point, my son and I were kicked out of the location. Dewayne, the bank manager, walked out. Again, I requested to see Navy Federal's policy that denies a veteran access due to not using hand sanitizer who has a medical condition and cannot use hand sanitizers. Dewayne replied, “what they have us doing with things that are happening is I can take your transaction out here.”
“So, you can deny me access with a medical condition for not using hand sanitizer, are you sure under the American disability act that’s the proper thing to do?” “Yes”, Dewayne replied. Dewayne wanted me to make my financial transaction on the sidewalk in front of everyone. It wasn’t until I made several requests did, he finally take care of my deposit in some sort of privacy. Fortunately, I recorded a video of the entire event and will file a complaint with the US Department of Justice.
While I understand the importance of hygiene, Navy Federal should understand immunology, genetics, and the potential side effects from a chemical reaction before forcing the use of topical skin agents. Unlabeled chemical sanitizers are absorbed by the skin and can agitate Psoriasis and cause numerous medical reactions even in people without autoimmune disease. This type of discrimination only adds to the social and psychological burden of the disease. In addition, they embarrassed me by forcing me to publicly state my private medical information in front of a public crowd. This caused my son to start crying because he didn’t understand why Navy Federal wouldn’t help us. In a time of real anxiety, maybe Navy Federal should focus on education and empathy verse the absurd, cruel, and counterproductive practices.

At first I went with the Realty Plus program that they offer, but we were not assigned a real estate agent until 2 weeks later, I missed out on making offers on all of the houses on our search except our last choice.
Although I like my current home, I missed several opportunities to buy a newer house with a larger amount of acreage that went for the a similar price as our current home. I uploaded all the required documents and my Loan was sent to the Loan Processor. (Rushana **) She emailed me on June 3rd and said she needed a few more items from me. I emailed her the required items and she said everything looked good. She would be sending everything to the underwriter and she would reach out if she needed anything else. At this point I assumed everything was good and I went about my life as if I was moving my family Across the country to our new home.
Fast Forward to Friday, July 10th and I was contacted by the title attorneys and they had not received all the paperwork to close on the 15th. I was told that they don't send out the paperwork more than a couple of days before closing. We loaded up the U-Haul and stated driving from California to West Virginia. On Monday July 13th, I was told I needed to send in more paperwork to make sure I close on time and that I had a new Loan processor. The next day I was told I would not close on the July 15th like expected because my Loan had not been sent to the Underwriter. We did not close until a week later on July 22nd. I had an extra week of U-Haul fees, Hotel Costs, and eating out every day. I reached out and asked to speak to a supervisor, but was only left an voice mail.
When I attempted to return the phone call and email again, I was ignored. I had to ask my command for extra leave and my family was stressed not knowing if we were going to actually move into our new home. I'm sure everyone involved still made their commissions and moved forward like nothing happened. I was finally contacted after I made a complaint through BBB, but it was just, "Sorry for your experience and send receipts so we can see if we can reimburse you." No reimbursement happened.

Absolutely horrible experience. We trusted NFCU as we would trust our own military. In other words, we expected honesty, reliability, and for them to honor their word. We begin our refinance in September 2020, got approved, and submitted all requested documents via Home Squad (online). For weeks we sat in limbo with the message on the site remaining the same - our loan was “in review” and if anything else was needed, we would be notified. I reached out to our processor for updates via phone and email now and then, but remained in a holding pattern.
Then the online link from my NFCU account to Home Squad went away! I reached out to our processor again, leaving voicemail messages - with no response. I then emailed and got an auto reply saying he was out of the office (for about 10 days). Given the holidays and Covid I wasn’t sure if he needed a break or may have had some sort of family emergency, so I waited until his return date for a call. But still, nothing. So, I wrote and left voicemails again.
Then I checked online yesterday (Dec. 21, 2020) and was stunned to see our mortgage application had been closed! I called the main NFCU number to find out what happened and was told our application was “withdrawn on November 21”. (!) She did not know why, but “escalated” our case to a “supervisor” who would “get back to” me.
So, no communication at all for weeks and our application is just dropped with no explanation? Yet, there was “modest” communication by way of recorded voicemails from “Rachel” at NFCU (one I got on Nov. 20, day before our application was apparently “withdrawn”) saying that our patience was appreciated and that our loan was being worked on but there had been a backlog due to low rates and many applications, or something to that effect.
All I can say is that we should not have put all our eggs in THIS basket, obviously! We had locked in a good rate and thought we would have refinanced by now. Instead, we have to start over with NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY. My father was a respected Captain in the Navy. He would have been horrified to learn that NFCU treats its members this way. Who can you trust anymore?

Been a member since 1998. NFCU has always been great to me. Other than the pandemic, I don't know what happened. I started my mortgage refinance 4 months ago and haven't heard any responses to emails or phone calls since mid October. Our anticipated close date is quickly approaching but, like others have mentioned, I don't anticipate it happening on time. If it doesn't I will most likely cancel the whole thing and find another lender. I would recommend anyone else looking to refi their mortgage to look elsewhere also. I know others are still closing in 30 days according to friends that have refinanced in the past few months.

I have been a member of NFCU since 1995. I have never had 1 problem with them in 25 years. So this year 2020 I decided to give them a shot at a Refi using the VA IRRRL. I was told up front that the process would take at least 120 days due to the low interest rates and high volume of applications which I expected so I have kept that in mind throughout the process.
First thing is the Home Squad site to upload docs. In plain words....it sucks. Does not work half the time and when docs do upload you do not hear back from anyone. Finally someone did reach out to me after about 1 month and as most people do they have a few questions. I asked my questions and within 1 week I was approved and I was told I would hear back from my loan officer within 2 days. This was in July. I was told everything is a go and I will have 0 issues. Credit score is an 801 and 0 debt and I was told that this would be a faster than normal process due to my portfolio. There was literally 0 hang ups with this loan.
Fast forward and it has been almost 4 months and I have heard nothing. I got a phone call about 2 weeks ago from an appraiser Oct 2nd that was in my driveway wanting to know where I was so I could be present for the VA home appraisal. I politely told her I have no idea why you're there and I made no appointment to have you come and appraise anything. She told me Navy Federal made arrangements for the appraisal, which I appreciate, however I was never notified in any way until this woman was standing in my driveway while I was at work. I apologized to her for the mis-understanding and her reply was "This usually happens with NFCU". I told her that I have not received 1 phone call and that I had questions prior to moving forward.
Later that afternoon I decided to email the only point of contact I had in the entire process with NFCU and instead of waiting for the phone call like I was told I would get I decided I will lay out my questions via e-mail since it is faster and maybe we could get the ball rolling sooner than later. Nothing. No reply. No anything. Keeping in mind the 120 day process I have officially had 1, yes 1 (one) conversation with a live person from NFCU concerning this process. Here we are on month 3.5 and still nothing. I scrapped the plans with NFCU and went with another bank for my refi and I am very happy. Everything is done and I will be closing here Oct 30th. From start to finish it took 30 days with the other bank I am working with. Maybe my case was an extremely rare one... Who knows but from here on out I will stick with Navy Federal for banking only.

I should've known we were heading for trouble when the Buyer's loan officer began our conversation by telling me all the things her company couldn't or wouldn't do. "Our loans are taking a minimum of 60+ days to close!" she relayed from her script. "Thanks!" I replied. "I look forward to working with you too!" Back on February 20, 2020, one of my Seller clients (a nice active-duty Navy family) went under contract with some Buyers who also happened to be an active-duty military family. The Buyers were using a VA loan through Navy Federal Credit Union. Our transaction was scheduled to close by March 26th. We navigated through the home inspection, which revealed that the roof was at the end of its effective service life and needed replacement. Several qualified 3rd party contractors confirmed that assessment, and the Sellers agreed to have the roof replaced prior to closing.
On March 23rd, I received a text from the Buyer's broker stating that the appraisal had come in $22K below our contract sales price. I inquired about invoking Tidewater, an initiative that allows you to contest the appraiser's price opinion by providing additional comparative sales data (It's worth noting that the roof was replaced AFTER the appraiser toured the property).
After a week or so of waiting for NFCU to respond about invoking Tidewater, I called the appraiser myself and was informed that he had finished his appraisal around the 18th of March, and had attempted to contact the loan processor at NFCU several times regarding the low appraisal. The loan processor was the only POC (point of contact) on the file. Since he was unable to reach her, he had no choice but to submit the file to the VA.
I relayed this information onto the Buyer's broker. Shortly thereafter, I was contacted by the Loan Processor's Supervisor at NFCU. She assured me that she was overseeing the file, and would be working with the appraiser to explore any options. In passing, she shared that the loan processor assigned to the file had been out on vacation when the appraiser called about the low appraisal. So the reason Tidewater was never invoked was because the loan processor was off on vacation and NFCU had made no provision for someone to manage her files in her absence.
Obviously, the only option available to us at this point was to file an ROV (Reconsideration of Value). This is a formal process where you can appeal the appraisal directly to the VA. You fill out a form with comparative evidence that supports a higher value, and provide some limited commentary as to why the comparative evidence is more accurate. In that commentary, I also included the cost of the roof replacement. Once the ROV is submitted to the VA Regional Office it normally takes 7-10 days for them to reach a determination. I was told by the Loan Processor Supervisor that the ROV had been submitted on April 6th.
After two weeks of crickets from NFCU, I made some inquiries and was able to connect with the person at the VA Regional Office in Denver who is in charge of fielding ROV's. He informed me that an ROV for our appraisal had never been submitted to his office. On April 27th, I forwarded this information onto the Supervisor. Two days later, she called to let me know that the ROV had been submitted to the VA, and that it would take up to 10 days to process. She offered no credible rationale as to why it had not been submitted, and offered no apology for the added delays. The Buyer's Loan Officer has been conveniently absent throughout this entire ordeal.
In summary, I've never experienced a company that so intentionally sets up virtual roadblocks, making it literally impossible for you to reach anyone to pose inquiries or obtain information about a loan in process. And when you do finally make contact, their response is abysmally slow, accompanied by an attitude of indifference, and a total lack of culpability.
While Navy Federal Credit Union may offer reasonable levels of service for their traditional banking services, their mortgage department is clearly negligent in the way they treat the valued active-duty service members and honored veterans who entrust them with funding the purchase of their homes. It's sad when a mortgage company whose name specifically targets our valued active-duty service members and veterans fails so miserably to serve those who have faithfully served our Country!

I have been paying on this line of credit since I was 18 and today I am 27 years old. No matter how much you pay Navy Federal charges 71.25 for a finance charge which is ridiculous. To be honest I will never be able to pay this off unless I hit the lottery and that is the truth.
When I pay the minimum they take that and then overdraft me again because of their finance charge then here is the kicker - they slap it on your credit that you are over your limit because of their finance charge. I do not understand how this credit union says they help active and retired veterans and their dependents but you might as well go to another bank if they are going to do this kind of stuff. First off, I see a lot of bad reviews for the mortgage process with NFCU. I also see some good reviews. I wanted to offer my experience that I went through before I completed my refinance on my home. It’s was not all good, but not all bad either, but in the long run I was happy and satisfied with what I received, which is why I gave a 5 star rating.
I have been a USAA customer for years and still use USAA as my main bank for checking. When I started to look into refinancing my house early last year (2019) I shopped around for the best deal I could find. Believe it or not that best deal and rate was from NFCU at the time. In order to apply I had to open a checking account and become a member, which was pretty easy and I completed only on my smartphone. My application for a home loan refinance took about a week to get a response and I was pre approved. I did use the same two programs that other reviews have spoke about to upload documents... very confusing.
My loan processor(s) were very helpful and normally responded to my email within a day. When I tried to call I very really got a returned phone call. My Loan girl changed hands maybe 3-5 times with different loan processors, but each one told me about the number of mortgages applications they had because of the lower rates so I completely understood. I think it was July of 2019 when everything was finalized but closing did not take place until the end of October. This was mainly because of the sheer number of applications they were having to process.
The real thing I like about NFCU, is they keep the mortgage themselves. They don’t sell it off to another third party. My first mortgage was with USAA but that sold it right away to GMAC, who went under and sold it to Ocwen, who then converted to PHH mortgage.... very confusing. But NFCU doesn’t do that, they handle the loan themselves. Long story short, if you're looking for a good deal, good I treat rate and you okay with waiting 8-10 months to close then I would recommend going to NFCU!

The ABSOLUTE WORST EXPERIENCE with Navy Fed refinance/mortgage/loan department I could have possibly imagined. We started the refi process in October 2019 with a 60-90 expectation for completion. After 4 loan officers, several times resubmitting our paperwork because they kept losing or misplacing it, paying for an appraisal, paying for a termite inspection, two credit checks later because they took so long to process our loan that the first one had expired, so many phone calls with no response, waiting, waiting, waiting not to mention the lack of availability of the loan processing department to even discuss our refi....
Our appraisal comes in insanely low, we request reconsideration of value, get an additional $30,000 added to the value (which was still under value), we finally get sent to the review board in March 2020 and are denied. Superior credit, never late on any of our Bills, perfect credit history and we are denied and no one will discuss (because they are sending us a letter in the mail to explain). Such a disappointment to work with. We had such high hopes considering they are supposed to cater to the military community.
I would have thought Navy Fed would honor their members with better service but they are an embarrassment to the military community and should be immensely ashamed of the quality of service they provide. We should have known when we were initially moved to our second loan officer that we should have bailed but we tried to give Navy Fed the benefit of the doubt. I just went through a terrible experience with NFCU for a refinance and want to warn anyone else considering it. I have excellent credit. Have owned my home for 10 years with NFCU holding the mortgage. I have never missed a payment and have an excellent loan to income ratio. I applied in January 2020 for a refinance. Over the course of January - March I have been extremely frustrated with the communication or lack of from NFCU. NFCU uses 2 applications for their mortgages. HomeSquad and Document Delivery. These two applications do not talk to each other. They send conflicting information via emails on a daily basis.
When I tried to talk with my loan officer she would take 2 days to respond and would not answer any of my questions. She would leave me voicemails but would never answer any of my questions. So I continued to try to talk with her and even asked if we could setup a meeting so we could have an actual discussion since up until that point we communicated by leaving each other messages. She acted and responded like she didn't have time for that. It may not be her fault - she may be dealing with hundreds of applications - I don't know. Either way, as a consumer I was left confused and frustrated for over a month.
The final straw was when I received an email that my application has been denied because of incomplete documentation. So now I have a hit to my perfect credit because of NFCU inability to communicate or have a well designed process for mortgage loans. I will be taking my business to another lender. Shame on NFCU for not putting the customer first. I have been a very happy member up until this point. I really appreciate NFCU for having ATM's and branches close to my home. After the way I was treated I will be moving to another bank.

No special offers to veterans. Not even a better interest rate of the loan, no different from other lenders though some lenders have better offers. Their customer service is as bad as their interest rates even with a good credit score.

We used to have TIAA Bank as our mortgage lender. I didn't like them! Their system made it very difficult to pay the bill and communicate effectively with them. My husband served in the US Navy and when he contacted NFCU, they made things easier for me since he gives me the $$$, and I pay the bills. NFCU offered us a better rate and more professional service. We didn't even have to leave our home for the closing. The lawyer came to us!!

It was the better of the two experiences I've had. Freedom Mortgage was the other experience, which was horrendous. When I went to refinance, I tried to use them first and they hung up on me the first time and didn't call me back when I left a message the second time. I can't wait to buy another house to use NFCU again.

Nobody knows what to do, offering the absolute worst in customer service while doing it. Automatically doing things that were not authorized is what lead this company into class action lawsuits in the first place. My initial email message to NFCU was asking HOW to close my accounts, NOT telling Navy Federal to close my accounts....but they went ahead and did it without confirming anything with me. Didn't even verify my identity. Instead, they went ahead with whatever they felt like and cut a check to me - sending it to my old address. Just a nightmare to deal with. Reading is fundamental.

I've been a member for over 30 years. Currently have a mortgage with NFCU. Purchasing a new construction and selling current home. Completed and submitted all required documents. Was unable to contact processor: "She's off today; She out of the office today; Leave a message." Went to a branch and they looked at me like I had a third eye. Very unplesant experience. Income over 100k, disapproved for new mortgage. Since then I have been approved by 2 different banks for the same mortgage. Closing soon on my new home with an excellent rate. It seems that NFCU, wants to laden you with junk debt; cars, personal loans etc. As soon as I close, I will pay off my credit card and vehicle and will not use them for my primary banking again. NFCU you've got to do better! Shame on you!

20 years relationship is over. I start this by saying that in years past I have enjoyed many good seasons with Navy Federal, but the last few years have undone every good experience. My first problem occurred several years ago when I was selling my home. Mind you that I purchased that home in 2004 and made every payment on time except that final one which I had called and discussed with them. The house was in Florida and closing was put on hold for a hurricane passing through. Because all of the documents were awaiting signature, I told the representative that I was not posting that payment due to a sale in progress. They still tacked a delinquency on my credit. Mind you I weathered the housing market crash and pretty well took a breakeven deal to honor my commitment to them.
Fast forward to now and recently requested a home equity loan with nearly 100K equity on my home. Requesting 75K, the greedy Navy Federal mortgage department offered me an inflated double digit interest deal that was completely ridiculous given the secured nature of the loan. Now I just received a letter denying my loan request that I turned down because of their greedy rates. I guess they need to save face... Done with this horrible credit union. Steer clear everyone!

DO NOT USE NFCU FOR A MORTGAGE LOAN - REGARDLESS OF THE RATES!! I decided to apply for a mortgage refinance through NFCU due to their competitive rates. I started the process early November of 2019 with the understanding that it would take approximately 80 days to close (it sounded like a warning from one of the managers but I could wait for that period of time). We are beyond 90 days and I am still waiting to finalize what shouldn't be a complicated loan (excellent credit score and LTV).
The worst part of the experience is the uncertainty due to the lack of response from the loan processor. It is extremely difficult to get a hold of the assigned processor and when you contact the 877 line, there is little they can do to actually help or update you on the loan process. They will literally direct your call to the processor (who won't answer, respond to voice mails or e-mails promptly); or escalate the issue to a department which again does nothing to substantially help. I am not sure how much longer I will have to wait to finally close on this refinance, but it has definitely not been worth the wait and a total unsatisfying experience. Will never use their mortgage service department again.

I am a veteran and joined with the intention of assuming an existing VA loan which was non-performing. After 10 weeks of different depts. I decided I would pay cash and the hell with Navy Federal and their complete incompetence. Absolutely the worst customer service and experience I have ever had at any financial institution. I have a 800+ credit score and the loan I was striving to assuming was non-performing. It seemed they would rather foreclose than have someone pay them on time.
I would rather have cancer and have no choice but to go the VA Hospital (we veterans know how bad that is) than deal with Navy Federal Credit Union ever again. I closed my acct and I never want to see their name again. How they are the largest, I have no idea as they have no concept of people's time or keeping their word about calling you back. If you need something, do not be fooled thinking they care about Veterans. They can care less. Run, don't walk away from this institution.

Every day you hear about banks being broken into left and right. It's not that the hackers are so clever that they can hack a system in a matter of time. It's the fact that banks like Navy Federal Credit spend close to nothing on securing your information. As a merchant, we received 2 credit cards that we knew were stolen. We contacted them in 1 week from the two attempts. So being responsible we contacted Navy Credit Union to report them as possible fraud, and navy federal credit union did nothing to stop the card from being used even though we were suspicious and knew it was fraud. They refused to at least contact the cardholder and ask them. They refused to put the card oh hold. Both times they gave us bs responses as if they dont care.
After researching Navy Credit, we found discovered that they use FISERVE to hold all your information, bank info, social security information, street the works. FISERVE is known to get hacked every 30 seconds and sued by dozens of banks. (Google fiserve lawsuit) and see the number of times they get sued for breaches life and right. Next time we get another hacked card, the convo is going to get recorded with any personal info bleeped out and everyone can see for themselves just how banks so called protect your info.
Case in point, they dont make up their own security measures. If you ever wondered if you called a few banks or had accounts with different banks and just wondered why their procedures for logging into systems or getting account info over the phone is close to identical. How dumb is that? if that technique gets hacked every single bank that uses that technique gets in jeopardy. And what are the chances of all banks or majority of banks using the same identical procedures? Think about that. And we'd watch the next time you use their so called mobile banking app. Where do you think 99.9% of the viruses out there come from and are targeted at. Would never use navy federal credit or get an app for them. I'd burn it!

Please save your own time and skip NFCU for your mortgage. Attempting to complete a mortgage approval is insanely tedious. Does anyone even work in the Processing Department? At every turn they want you to do the work that they are supposed to be doing. My refinance completely stalled because they used my contact address in place of the refinance property address. This was a loan initially from NFCU!! They wanted every document again from the inspections, HOA, etc because the development wasn't approved for lending!? How can it be, you ask? It's as if this department is a completely isolated and independent contractor with no internal links to NFCU.
Appalling customer service. At this point not a single person answers their phones and the voicemail boxes don't even have a recorded message from the recipients, haha. THAT'S NO JOKE! They are trying to ghost their own customers (and shareholders if you still believe that "CU" in the name means anything). I have banked with NFCU for 5 years and have never had an issue with their basic products such as checking, savings, and CDs. Their mortgage department is however an entirely different issue. It very well may be that I had a bad loan team assigned to me but from my experience the loan officer would take two weeks at the least to return my phone calls or emails. I would have to directly message her supervisor in order to get a response on documents that were never sent to me.
In that instance she had requested that I sign documents that were never sent, two weeks after I had repeated emailed her saying she had never sent them to me. Important deadlines would near and when I attempted to get questions answered my response was silence unless I contacted her supervisor. This was only the first red flag of what would follow.
My loan processor was a different story, I genuinely felt like he cared about helping me through the process and would return my calls. This evening however, the day before my closing I receive a closing disclosure claiming I would have to bring nearly 100% more cash to closing than was disclosed to me weeks before. The issue turned out to be that someone writing the paperwork omitted the sellers closing credits to me totaling $2000 dollars. As the paperwork was sent to me at 5 p.m. everyone had already left the office by the time I had a chance to respond and as of now I have no indication if this will affect my closing date which has already been rescheduled. TWICE. In closing, I would not recommend this lender for mortgages regardless of their lower interest rate as the hassle that I experienced does not outweigh the extra 50 or so dollars a month I have saved on my mortgage. I will in the future be using USAA for mortgages.

I have been a member of the Navy Fed for 50 and 1/2 years I was given an est of rates and terms on 7/21/19, at least 30 documents were submitted over a period of 4 months. I made several trips to the local branch where the local branch rep was friendly and helpful. I made the visits to make sure the loan officer got the documents she asked for to process. There were at least 3 times where we had to resend the documents. I called the loan officer and her supervisor at least 17 times and left messages to find out a status or find out if they needed any information.
Finally in late October when I received a call from a supervisor that NFCU could not offer the 15 year term they had quoted, however, they could offer me a 30 year loan at a higher rate. Moreover, they were now asking that I show them that I prove that my business was closed. In fact my business was not closed. I never told them my business was closed. I was originally, the business info was not needed because my wife and I have 5 streams of income including 3 pensions (Navy, and SSI). I told them that I would not accept the terms and told them I wanted to withdraw my request for the loan. Finally I received a form letter on 1/3/2020 that checked two boxes 1. Income Insufficient 2. Excessive Obligations. Not only was this not true (I submitted 3 times their requirements for income and have 4 X the loan amount in cash deposits and securities).
There was no need to take 4 months to tell me this stuff. They had all the needed within 30 days. The good news is that interests rates have dropped 1.5 %. I am 72 and have bought and sold 6 properties, all with loans from a VA loan to loan from local banks. I have never received service as bad as this and such an ambivalent response from a loan officer and her supervisor.

I am a full time home renovator. I have been for over 15 years. I will no longer accept buyers who use Navy Federal as their lender. This is the 2nd deal to take more than 60 days to close, double the time of any other bank. Not to mention the constant and unnecessary drama. Both fell apart last minute. A surprise to the buyer and seller. The loan officer would not return calls, emails or text messages from the title company or sellers agent. COMPLETELY uncommunicative. The transaction cost me, the seller nearly 3K more and left the buyer homeless. Navy federal caused 4 contract extensions. Why, the lender was not ready despite having double the time other banks take.
The closing is going into a new year because of all the drama (despite the fact that this should have closed weeks earlier). The buyer, their client, found out at the closing table that Navy federal was holding their closing funds. All the buyers belongings were in a rented truck. Now they were homeless and had no place to put their belongings. The Buyers had already been homeless for 2 weeks because Navy federal changed the closing date so many times. The excuse proved by Navy federal, "There was a grant involved and that takes time." The grant funds were already received by the title company. (90% of our settlements have grants and this NEVER happens with other lenders.)
It was not until the day of the original closing that Navy Federal said they would not allow the buyer to use the grant. The buyer then had to scramble to come up with an additional $10,000. Despite having more than 60 days to review the loan the buyer was not told until the first scheduled closing date. Plus the loan officer would not speak with the title company so we the seller knew nothing of what was happening. There is no local loan officer to speak with and Navy federal does NOT CARE about their client or the seller of the home. STAY FAR FAR AWAY OR YOU TOO WILL END UP SLEEPING IN A RENTED MOVING VAN FOR 2-3 WEEKS. SHAME ON NAVY FEDERAL!

NFCU's customer service from the Call Center is terrible. On 24 Dec 2019 I needed to help my dad to delete his monthly automatic transfer to me. My name isn't on his account and he speaks a very little English. In the past the representative first verifies name, birthday and last-4 with my dad, then speak to me after his permission, this process takes just few minutes. When I made the first call and the phone was on speaker with my dad sat next to me. I stated this issue right away. The representative Sarah immediately refuses to speak to me, knowing I'm also the member of NFCU, she then started very arrogantly speak to my dad with tons of English plus complicated grammar, instead just a simple ask "what is your name Sir....." What an ignorant move. Of course my dad didn't understood her English, she then took her a long while to finally found an interpreter.
It took the representative literally 10 minutes back and forward between the interpreter and my dad to just get my father verified. The representative was very arrogant, stubborn, rude, offensive and very aggressive. I asked the representative to add my name to my dad's account to avoid any future complications during the verification process, she told me that I need a Power of Attorney. I was finally frustrated and furious with her rude attitude. I call back with the intention to report Sarah's behavior during my previous phone call. The second representative who answered the phone needed to verify me first. I gave him all my personal and account information, after he verified me, he then asked me if I was going to talk on behalf of someone else. What a rhetorical question!! Again, rude and offensive.
When the supervisor AJ came on the phone, he immediately took sides, that frustrated me even more. I asked to speak to a manager, he then refused my request. NFCU's customer service is terrible, they don't have the mentality of "customer first". They are selfish, arrogant, rude, aggressive and offensive. Disregard the trust with the customer, treat customers as if they were hackers or thief. I understand the verification process is very important, also is to protect both NFCU and its customers. However the attitude is wrong, totally unprofessional!

I was planning to provide a review after our loan process was complete, but cannot wait any longer to write this review. I've had an NFCU account since I was 9 (both parents were in the Navy, plus other family members, I worked for the Navy so I am very, very pro Navy). My husband and I are fortunate enough to own our home. We are fortunate enough to have an opportunity to buy some land and the best route for financing the land seemed to be a home equity loan. We applied in October and uploaded more documents than I have ever had to give for a loan.
We were pre-approved by the end of October. Then silence. Then problems with the electronic signature system. More silence. More silence and lack of replies to calls or emails. When I called the generic line they were nice, but could only pass along information - though one person reading the emails was making sounds such as oh, wow, this will be elevated to the supervisor. The calls we did receive asked if we wanted to cancel the loan, NO was always the answer. Then, I finally received a reply from the supervisor (after I made another call of complaint). She assured me applications are taken in order. Really? Then they have too many in flow. Loans can be done in under 45 days. They are taking 90+ days for people with collateral in the bank, collateral in a house, and excellent credit.
Today, 12/10, I find out from the loan officer she "missed" my email reply to her email where she asked me to reply by email... how about the other emails and phone calls - how did she miss all of those as well, including when I said in my October email to move forward, take funds from our account for the appraisal, etc? Again today she asked if we wanted to withdraw since it would not be finished this year, I had to tell her NO twice. Missing an email and not replying to calls and emails is not going in order of receipt of applications!!!! Wow, just Wow. Final comment to NFCU if they read this - hiring people that have zero ability, authority, or possibly care about you to then call and ask questions and do who knows what with your questions is worse than doing nothing. People think the information from those calls is going somewhere, stupid us.

I had (still do USAA for YEARS). 4 years after my bankruptcy they denied me getting a credit card so I can reestablish credit, & denied my loan for a mortgage (1st time buyer). Seems I'm only eligible to buy whatever products they’re selling. I’m only keeping USAA because my direct deposit is available early.
I just knew Navy Fed was going to do the same thing since I’ve only been a member for 2 years. & Surprisingly, after applying for a mortgage loan & credit card, I was approved. The woman on the phone even laughed when I screamed. Even my credit card limit was high (my interest rate is 7.7%) I was shocked and extremely happy. I had my son joined. So far he’s had 3 separate instances of someone putting fraudulent charges on his account. Each time, navy fed alerted him and he got his money back. Maybe the institution varies where you live? I currently am paying 17% APR and me and my wife are struggling to keep up with this payment because of the high interest. But nevertheless, we have been on-time and well over the minimum payment with both the credit card and the mortgage.
Today It took another supervisor less than 15 seconds to tell me that I am not eligible for a reduced interest rate and to have a nice day. All of our hard work, the nights not eating nicer meals, staying in, pouring our hearts out at work....summed up in a 15 second call. Answer is yes. The rep had the nerve to say I should have money in account before setting up bill pay...which I did have in there. That’s the reason the money is there, but an unauthorized charge is my fault? If I never put my money in that back and got a cashier's check or money order from 711 I would be ok. Lesson for me why is even use this bank. I have a safe. Interest isn’t that high for these problems.

Unfortunately, this company does not always respect closing deadlines when their clients purchase a home. Not only does this affect their clients in a negative way, but it can potentially affect other people as well. Often times buyers have moving trucks lined up, other closings that can not close until their mortgage closes, etc.... It creates so much stress for so many people when lenders are disrespectful and refuse to honor closing dates. I truly hope I never have to work with your company again.

I agree with the other previous reviews about the customer service and lack of communication. As a military veteran, I would excited to bank with a credit union designed to service military. Well, they do a very poor job of it. Just to open an account takes a great deal of work because their communication is completely inadequate. They provide wrong information and ask you to send sensitive information to emails and fax numbers that are apparently not working or monitored. I had a NFCU credit card, which I just closed, because of horrible policies and lack of customer service. I also disputed two transactions on my debit card and NFCU does not back you up like other credit unions or banks. Both transactions, which were not legit, went against me. Looking for another credit union....

We started the process in September 2019 and as of October 24th I still can't get an answer on where we are. I have left messages and sent emails only to never hear from someone. I finally tweeted about them and wow somebody I guess monitors the tweeter universe. I have to echo all other complaints I am reading here, they never update you, return calls or let you know what's going on. WORST experience ever, and this is not my first rodeo. I would move on and not deal with these incompetent people. You will waste time and energy trying to get the process over.

Updated on 11/21/2019: This is an update from my previous post on Oct 29, 2019. This has got to be this worst experience of my 52 year life. I wish I had never gone with them but now I am suck until the nightmare ends which now is 80 days. I can’t believe the constant problems I have with this company. It has now been over 90 days and they finally called (miracle) and told me the would close on 22 November 2019 but of course this is NFCU. The next day they called and said they have not gotten the title search back (it has only been 80 days)! If you make the biggest mistakes in your life on I mortgage like I did and go with them please don’t use their third party companies which are as bad as they are in mortgage.
I really don’t think this will ever get done to be honest because the level of incompetence at this mortgage company is of the scale. December 4th is my 90th day so I am going to have to make a decision either let them extend again or just quit thinking this is going to happen and move to another company. If you don’t believe me try to get one closed yourself and good luck! Also just a quick reminder you will never be able to talk with them once you are in the process because customer service is extremely poor including the management and upper level management.
Original review: I have been trying to refinance my home with NFCU and it is a nightmare! If the rate and fees weren’t so good I would have left already but it may not happen anyway because you can never figure out what stage they are in with the process. I have to call several times and email dozens of times and not until I write in all caps do they respond maybe. I have excellent credit but the answer I always hear is it is in credit review. I started on 5 September 2019 and now it is 29 October 2019 and the answer again today is credit review! I am not very confident that my paperwork will be correct even if I make it to the end. They have already filed an extension for the credit lock so I guess they know it will take much longer. I should have went with another company but I am too far along now (I hope) to quit now. If I could give them a zero I would! More to follow.

10/28/2019 UPDATE. Well this just gets better and better. Thanks to NFCU and their complete lack of knowledge with the mortgage process I still haven't closed and now it will probably be November. The surprise today was that instead of getting money back at closing (around $19,000) that I would in fact own them money (to the tune of $17,000). The person "helping" me must have forgot to send me an updated loan estimate and sprung this surprise while awaiting clear to close status. Now they are fixing it so I don't owe money. Again don't do mortgage business with NFCU.
10/185/2019 Update!!.. No mortgage yet and the guy that was handling our stuff was fired. I had to track down his supervisors to find out if anyone who was working my file and what their name was. Keep in mind I started this "adventure" at the end of June. After establishing a new contact there I had a closing date in September, then October 4th, then October 18th and now October 28th. At this point I am so far in the process and have already paid for an appraisal that I am stuck having to wait it out. I am telling you, save yourself the anguish and go somewhere else if you need a mortgage. They are probably great in other areas of banking but not on mortgages. Just hoping to close before year's end.
09/18/2019 I applied for a mortgage and initially there were a few bumps in the road then things seem to be going well. One day I emailed the person handling my mortgage and was told it went to underwriting. I emailed back a few days later but didn't get a response back. Several more days passed and I get a voice message from a "Lori" who says she is taking over my loan. She never left a last name or phone number or anything. She simply said she will review my application and get back with me. Well that was now 10 days ago. I have since left voicemails and numerous emails to several people there some of which are supposed to be supervisors. My lock expires in about a week and a half and I have no idea what it going on. I am telling you, do yourself a favor and don't attempt a mortgage with these people.

Simply put, do NOT and I repeat DO NOT use NFCU for any mortgage services. THEY SUCK HORRIBLY. Their communication is non-existent and the people working in the lending department are the most incompetent group of people I have ever came across. I am not sure how they are allowed to even still operate with the way they do business. I would never recommend their services to anyone. Without going into a full long drawn out explanation of why you shouldn't use them, I will break it down into bullet points:
-they do not care about any important time hacks (finance contingencies)
-they do not care about you or your future
-they DO NOT ANSWER THE PHONE
Oh and about that phone thing, I believe if I hear the word "escalate to a supervisor" one more time in my life I am going to lose my mind. Important calls were supposed to be given to a supervisor who is always in a meeting or unavailable Monday-Friday 9am-8:59am (ALL DAY). This bank should be audited and reviewed by the big guys. I can't believe they are allowed to operate like this. If you are a member of the military, use Veterans United. They actually care about your business. I pulled my application from them and it was the best decision ever.

Why is it so difficult to get a status update from the NFCU lending team? Thanks to a complete lack of communication on their part, our closing date has been delayed for an unknown period of time, and we still don't have an answer on when we can expect to close. We are incurring unexpected storage costs because our belongings were already being packed and loaded onto the moving truck before we ever received any notification that there would be a delay in closing.
Neither the buyer's agent nor our agent can get a call back from anyone regarding our situation, and we've been stuck in this limbo for over 24 hours. This is absolutely ridiculous and our realtors have already made it a point to discourage any of their clients from ever using NFCU for mortgage lending services ever again. They have made an already-chaotic situation incredibly stressful and costly for both parties, and it could have been avoided if the lending team had bothered to pick up the phone and notify someone weeks ago that there might be a delay. The customer service is lacking, to say in the least. Completely non-existent is a more accurate descriptor.

With some extra money in hand, I was looking to open a CD account with a good interest rate. NFCU had the best rate that I could find, so I tried to open a share account as a preliminary step. That took nearly two weeks of back-and-forth, as they repeatedly rejected a photocopy of my U.S.passport, via unhelpful form email. I finally found out, from a customer service person that the reason for rejection was that they couldn't see all 4 corners of the passport in the photocopy. Honestly, it was less hassle to get my security clearance in the Navy.
After the share account was established, I tried to add my wife as a joint owner, and the obstacle race began all over again. After two more requests for additional information and documentation to meet their (apparently) insatiable needs, I decided to pull the plug. I'll save my money with some other institution, even with a lower rate of interest, rather than deal with this nonsense.

The service with Navy Federal has gone down dramatically. I contacted them a few weeks ago to refinance my VA loan with an IRRRL (Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan), which is a VA refinance loan that does not require a credit or income check. So, what is the first thing Navy Federal does? They check my credit report! Then, they send me documents with completely outrageous and unrealistic terms. The recoupment period was 70 months, which means it won't even be guaranteed by the VA because it has to be 36 months or less. The Reps have no idea of Federal regulations and want to argue their ignorance about the subject! Even supervisors don't return calls! I have my original VA loan with them and will move my loan elsewhere with more competent people as SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! My advice is to look elsewhere if you want your VA loan done correctly!

For 17 days I tried to get in contact with my loan officer to increase the loan by $10,000 and make an offer on a home for sale. No response. No email, no phone calls. I made continual efforts to get in contact, and I finally received a response. The response came in the form of informing me my offer had expired, the day they informed me. It's as if Navy Federal is actively avoiding doing business with their customers when dealing with mortgages. I didn't know this was a common complaint or I would never have begun the process with them. I think it's more disrespectful to imply they care about veterans and their families with this level of service.
I would recommend avoiding their service for the purpose of home loans at all costs. Plenty of other companies offer VA loans and other military-related service benefits for loans. Another note, which was annoying, was the lack of service or response addressing my complaints or concerns about the service. They could simply care less.

We emailed, our realtor emailed, the seller’s realtor emailed - nothing. Finally, the date after the day our closing should have been, she sent an update that said, "If underwriting processes is today then you’ll close in 3 days, if not, you’ll close in 5 days". We have busy schedules and a lease that is about to end. They put us in a very impractical situation and there’s really nothing we can do about it. I would give them negative stars if I could.

You will be asked the same questions over by a series of people that should take note and pass on information. After all, isn't the process about finding out if the inputted information is valid or not? After being a member for 35 plus years and owning 2 homes, I thought I would take the NFCU path. Even after being warned by people who had taken this route. They are not good with given specifics and you have to make contact constantly to stay in the loop. WORST, WORST experience ever as a retired vet. I WOULD NEVER EVER RECOMMEND NFCU TO ANYONE AGAIN!

I am really disappointed with NFCU. Look elsewhere first before doing a mortgage with Navy Federal. #1 They advertise low interest rates but give you a higher rate on your loan. #2 and even worse, they string you along for 2 months or more and can't seem to complete the loan. Hey, if you are denying me, ok, or need something else like a condition, just let me know, BUT "NO"! They keep the loan open and will not communicate to let you know what is going on.
I started a Home refinance with Navy Federal Credit Union at the beginning of August 2019. It is now approaching the middle of OCTOBER and still no word. I gave them everything they asked for up front. This has been the worst loan experience I have ever had. They will lie to you and string you along without communicating to you. Navy Federal communication is horrendous.
I don't care what the interest rate is, 2 months and still not completed or denied is completely unsatisfactory. I would respect them more if they just told me I was denied or they don't want my business. I have a 720 credit score, 0 x 30, assets, etc. I am now out of $450 for an appraisal and $150 for a termite letter and still have no idea what the status is on my loan. These people do not tell the truth and appear to be incompetent. I hope your experience is way better than mine. I will be closing all 3 of my bank accounts at NFCU this week. Navy Federal does NOT care and it's obvious.

First of all, I'll start off by saying ALL Credit Unions I've had are FAR AND AWAY SUPERIOR to ALL BANKS PERIOD. 7 Years ago I already have my accounts with San Diego County Credit Union for YEARS. Love them, very small local only bank, very friendly people, they're great. 3 years ago, NFCU opened a new Branch near me, my brother & Nephews all bank with NFCU & kept after me to open an account, but I didn't see the point, I was happy with SDCCU, why should I open another account with yet another bank? I also have an online only Capital One 360 account for the past 15 years.
So finally they talked me into it, I opened a Personal Bank/Savings account with NFCU only because this made it made money transfers to and from my brothers/Nephews easier. It's been over 3 years now, I have to say I'm very very impressed! NFCU Online access experience is Superior to SDCCU. Then last year they approved a $25.000 Platinum Card @ only 8.24% Rate after 0% interest runs out in 15 months, with only a "GOOD" credit score rating. How can you beat this?
Well, now I just found out from my Nephew they will allow me to apply again for 2 more of these same Platinum cards! (Apparently they allow anyone up to 3 cards total, even if all 3 are Platinum Cards!) SO, they just approved my brother for his 2nd 0% platinum card RIGHT when he needed it MOST, even though his credit is only fair due to high Utilization, which this card is now going to help with TREMENDOUSLY! At this point, Impressed is an understatement! I have absolutely nothing negative to say about NFCU.
One last piece of VERY GOOD advice... Never ever under any circumstances should anyone ever bank or have anything to do with Bank of America or Chase! The two worst banks ever in the history of mankind! Total stupidity to have anything to do with BOA or Chase! And many of you are nodding your head in agreement with this right now, aren't you?

My checking account and savings account balance at the time of this issue was approximately $36,000. My payments have NEVER been late in the past and are usually paid well before the due date.
While I was traveling out of state, I did not realize a $279 payment was due on the home equity line of credit. At the same time, I issued a check for approximately $6400 for a property tax. I received an email one week later that the $6400 check was rejected because the home equity line of credit account was delinquent since the $279 payment had not been received!
Don't you think that a bank with any degree of customer service would have either contacted me or covered the $279, knowing that I had ample funds in my account to pay the $279. I talked to Genevieve, #** who basically stated, "Sorry, but that's the way it is." I expect that I will now have fees to pay for the rejected transaction and late property tax payment because NFCU could not cover the payment. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.

While I am happy with Navy Federal overall, they need people with better attitudes working in their bill pay department. Our account was closed because someone tried to steal from us and apparently, the bill pay section somehow wasn't included in the closing of the account. It wasn't mentioned at the time that we closed the account (last month) nor after (and I even had to call in to ask why the account was still showing up on my side. The agent even verified at that time that the account was closed smh). Today, I get a letter in the mail stating that we owe $50 to the bill pay part of the site. They covered the money for us (we didn't know any of this was even happening because we assumed that the entire account was closed and any dealings with it smh).
After talking at, because she did not speak nice to me, one of the women that answered the phone, I asked to speak to someone else. She (in all her smarts) asked who so I also gave a smart remark. I am still unsure as to why if I close an account, why someone is still able to take money from a nonexisting account when every other transaction is sent back to the requesting agencies? Especially if it was set up to go out from the account itself (meaning I send money to a bill company instead of them debiting from me). Because the account was closed and there was no money to send, the entire account should have been closed. When a person calls in to ask a question and to resolve an issue, the worst thing that a representative of that company can do is be offensive and talk around a person's question. It's frustrating enough to call bill collectors in the first place. Why add stress?
I hate talking to representatives, especially those with half a brain and I refuse to go round for round with them. Get some nicer people. I know it doesn't matter, but I want my bill pay services canceled forever and it can stay suspended. If that's the way I have to be talked to by someone who's probably only doing that job because she suck at everything else, then I say fire her or you will continue to lose customers. Paypal reps have a better attitude. I'll go through them.

I am not sure what is going on with the credit union, however, I can tell you my recent experiences have been horrible; customer service, communication, and processes have became a nightmare.
My latest horrible transaction - I submitted a loan application for a VA mortgage refinance (IRRRL). The loan processor assigned to my application did not communicate AT ALL. The initial application process was handled online and went very smoothly. Sadly, once the human processor got involved, my life became a bloody hell. The processor NEVER ONCE communicated problems with the application. The processor NEVER ONCE answered her phone or returned my phone calls. The processor ONLY ONCE, sent an email apologizing for her lack of communication..., and that was over 6 weeks ago.
I applied for a VA Refinance with Cash Out at the end of June. I was conditionally approved the beginning of August. Then the processor just stopped processing the loan. She just sat on it. She never came into the office or was always in meetings. Several other processors and supervisors promised action or follow-up phone calls, but never delivered on either. So here we are, nearly 90 days after the initial application. No information. No follow up to my inquiries. No loan. So as I said..., if you need a mortgage, go anywhere else but to Navy FCU.
