My rating is zero stars. I have read nearly all of the reviews, and I sympathize with everyone. I am a co-borrow for a loan that my brother took out. I filled out an application and was later told that this was an "application and promissory note" combined into one. I was never told what the terms and conditions of this loan were before it was released to my brother. To my dismay, I received a letter from AES stating that my brother was given an $18,000 loan with a 20 year repayment term at a variable interest rate (at the time of the loan it was 18%). Every time I call AES about my options as a co-borrow I get a different answer. Essentially I have all of the responsibilities of the borrow with absolutely no rights.

My advice to everyone is to contact the Bureau of Consumer Finance Protection at https://help.consumerfinance.gov and file a complaint. I have already submitted my complaint, and I hope that every else on this site does the same thing. I am also planning on talking with a lawyer with regard to my rights as a consumer.

AES sold my student loan to another loan servicer. They did not inform me of the change. I only discovered there was a problem when my long-standing direct debits began to be returned to my bank. They claim that they had sent me a letter regarding the change, but the address was incorrect and the address error was mine, though I had previously received communications from them at the same address without a problem. Further, they failed to respond to the inquiries I made on their website asking why my payments were being returned. To get things sorted, I had to contact the Student Assistance Corp. When I called to correct the address, they had my address as being in Scotland, a place I have never lived.

A few years later I checked my credit report to find that they had listed me as 120 days delinquent because of their error. When I called to see if I could correct this, they said, no, they did not consider it a serious problem and there was nothing I could do about it. I again called the Student Assistance Corp who confirmed that they too could to nothing about it and I had no recourse. No one I could file a complaint with or request further action. That these companies are making billions off of students and former students and allowed to treat their borrowers with such contempt is obscene.

I have a complaint already made from CPS and FBI. This company will make you think you're loan is approved, they get all your credentials and before a loan is dispersed they tell you to wire them money. I'm not talking about hundreds, it's thousands, then when you wire the funds they say your loan will be in your bank account that you provided them, only to be told that you have to forward more funds. I have posted comments about them on their Facebook page to warn people, then they take me off the page and they say they'll report me to their attorneys. Really? I want my money back!

In December I was notified by my lender that my student loan was being transferred to AES and documentation would soon follow. Well, I just got the new documentation from AES where they are now charging me an additional $1988.73 in addition to the amount I have been paying on. I am in shock! I don't know where to turn for help. I am being screwed and don't have any recourse. Really?!! This is just insane! How does the government get away with this crap? I think there should be a class action lawsuit too.

My husband has had student loan since 2006. For default and other issues, it has now tripled. Had been paying consistently since 2008. Went on income-based repayment (IBR) in 2012. Huge mistake! Owed more after paying a year. Changed to pay more in 2013 and 2014. Now in financial situation and need to lower payments. AES said he can't reduce payments unless he extends time to pay and only way to do that is to go on IBR! There is no way we would ever make that mistake again. Whoever made up IBR to help people needs to see what it really does. AES is doing what it can to make sure people never can pay off their loans!!!

I agree 100% with the one star reviews. I'm the co-signer for my son's loan and they make it extremely difficult to make a payment though their website. I asked them recently, “Don't you people want my money?” They responded, “Yes but security is very important.” I've been mailing payments for the past 8 years. He's my son don't you know that by now?!! Shouldn't you make it hard on customers that don't pay their loans?!! So they set me up with a co-signer account that is missing the complete loan information with no paperless billing. They won't give me any information. Are these people idiots? I'm his father and I'm trying to pay his loan!!!! They seem to purposely try to confuse you so your payment is late and then a late fee is charged. Then they send approximately 6 letters from a collection agency. I have made all of the payments for the past 8 years. Plus the loan is a private loan which is not eligible for deferments or forbearances!! Pretty sneaky!! Stay away from this disgraceful incompetent company.

I switched to a new lender 3.5 months ago. After the transactions cleared AES owed me 5K and we suppose to mail the check to my new lender. They said they mailed it the first time but the new lender never got it (this was after waiting 60 days). Then they said they sent it again, new lender never got it. This will be the third attempt at sending the check. Apparently, it is against their protocol to track their mail. So they still have my 5K almost 4 months later.

For the last few months, AES has delayed processing my loan payment in order to charge me a late fee. I use banking online with my bank which has not become a problem until about 4 months ago. The bank would show the payment was sent and AES wouldn't process it for another 7-10 days. The only way I have been able to avoid this is by using their website to make payments.

I took out a loan with AES in 2004 for roughly $13,000. I have paid between 120 to 140 a month for the past 7 or 8 years but the amount I owe has only gone up. I have spoken with them several times, asking for all the paperwork concerning my loan. On two separate times I have been told they would put that info in the mail but I have never received any paperwork from them. They are the absolute worst, my wife and I feel like we have been working with loan sharks. I will never recommend this company to anyone, not even my worst enemy. The FEDs definitely need to get involved because they are ripping off hard working Americans.

I have been paying faithfully on my loans for 8 years now. I have never been late. I have never filed a forbearance. Immediately after graduating, I was called by AES and given a great offer to consolidate all my loans with them and pay them off. Great! I was overwhelmed with job decisions, resumes, interviews, etc. When pulling a credit report last year, I saw the balance of my account and was in complete and total shock. I still owe 98% of what I did 8 years ago. How is this possible?

I called and was told my loan was interest only. Had no idea. A complete waste of so much money at this point. I am now on email for trying to get them to call me to discuss other options. I am really disappointed in myself and in them. I realize that it's not all on them that I didn't check sooner, but is their zero oversight on their practices??

I co-signed a private student loan for my sister. I actually found out that this was a private student loan and not federal not long ago since they faxed me the signing papers only without the rest of the information. My sister applied for the loan from N.Y. and I was in Texas. I signed also under mental pressure since I was having problems with emotional behavior in which later I became 100% disabled through the military. I tried the disability discharge, but I just found out that with private loans you cannot use this option. This is causing a big mental anguish. My sister and I have no communication and I am forced to pay for this loan. I have called them several times explaining but they said they have accept no forgiveness at all and that I have to make the payments regardless. I tried talking to someone higher up also several times, and I have been told that there is nobody that can help in that matter. I never have been able to talk to anyone else but a representative.

Aes pushes the limits. They call my cell if I am late on a payment and don't leave a message. Then call my parents at home work and cell, and leave no messages. Then they take it way too far contacting grandparents, who are not tied to the account at all. Confusing 80+ yr old people doesn't seem appropriate. When I asked them to discontinue calling my grandparents, I was told rudely not to tell them how to collect a debt. If I could afford to pay this off and be done with this company, I would ASAP.

I consolidated my student loans with AES some years ago.Their neglect has cost me over 20,000.00 in interest to my loan. I have called, written, and faxed them about my loans and loan payment. I'm on a plan they say I'm not qualified for and I have sent all my tax, pay stubs, and forms over and over. Every time I call, I get an experienced person who answers phones but does not solve problems. I am a teacher and had to start my forgiveness time over after having a baby and going on maternity. Other providers say that AES will not honor their forgiveness plan. I regret ever getting involved with AES. I asked for advice and guidance regarding paying back my loans and they steered me in a financially damaging direction. With a fixed income, it is difficult to pay such high amounts monthly and get the balance down. Their actions have proven that they are invested in keeping customers in debt. They steer people into deferment, which keeps the interest growing. I was told once a couple years ago that the plan I was on would stop the interest from growing. Not so. It is too bad there is not more help for people with student loans or a consequences to providers.

Ok so I thought I had all of my loan stuff taken care of. My other loans are on the IBR plan and I've had no problems. But after a year I get a letter/call from a company saying that my loan was about to go into collections. I told them that I was put on the IBR plan and that I had not heard anything else from AES. They told me I had a past due balance and that they could help. I said ok help. I also asked why I had not heard anything from AES. They told me that they had been sending everything to the wrong address. Boy was I mad. Someone right could have my name and my identity. So they sent me the IBR Application and I filled it out and sent it back. I gets another letter saying that I am not eligible to be on that plan. I called them. I told them that I am not married. I have no taxable income. They claim that I did not complete section four.

So that day I get them on the phone. I'm going off asking why this info did not come to me via paperless mail. She said all kinds of stuff that I don't remember. I was very upset. I told the lady that I want to see the application that I already sent to them. She said she could not send that to me so I told her who can send it to me. I had to talk to two other people before I could get what I wanted and the forum is still not here. And I have an IBR on loans that I feel like I should not have to pay back because I was kicked out of two other schools and going to college was a waste of time because my license is expired and I have no way of getting that back. I could not even find a job. I still can't.

I co-signed for my daughter's student loans in around 2004. 15 months ago, she passed away, unexpectedly, as well as unexplained. I notified AES of her passing, and they told me there would be no problem forgiving the loan. They put it in forbearance for 90 days, to allow me to send them a signed letter, explaining the circumstances, and an original copy of her death certificate, both of which I did. After 90 days, I was sent a bill showing me as the borrower, the loan as delinquent, and ineligible for forbearance. I called them to discuss the matter, and they said there was nothing they could do. I informed them that I had hired a private pathologist, as well as an attorney to get a case opened, so I wasn't financially able to resume where she had left off. I was told again, sorry, nothing they could do. My attorney now has them on his list as well.

When I called them back up and told them I did everything they told me to do, they had no answer to my reply. "I am sorry sir there is nothing we can do." In 1993 I was paying back my student loan then my father died and my husband ended up on dialysis then kidney transplant etc so I filed a chapter 13 and paid off my loan thru the court. It was all finished in 1997 and all was well until 2003 (10 YEARS after chapter 13 filed and 7 years after finished and closed). Coincidence, I don't think so. In 2003 all of a sudden I get a letter saying I owe AES my whole loan plus interest and the one person I spoke with and told her I had the papers showing it was paid and resolved told me to fax it to her and she would correct it was all of a sudden no longer working there 3 days later when I called to see if she could send me the corrected report so I would have the proof.

Since then I have been harassed, had my nursing license suspended until I paid them 6 months of money on their bill to show I was going to work with them. I had to write the state representative to get my License reinstated. Oh and also my husband died in 1999 so I went back to school working on my BS. Had to stop because my mom got breast cancer but paid that loan for 1 semester back in full. I even asked the person how I would have been able to get another student loan if I still owed the one in 1993 and they could not tell me. Anyway in 2011 I got sick and am now disabled with lupus and RA and until I got the loan "dismissed" by NELNET they have taken all my tax refunds, any incentives and still none of it shows being applied to the so called loan.

I found a paper that shows I have paid over 18 thousand dollars on a 6 thousand dollar loan and sent them the proof and am unable to get anyone to acknowledge it or call me and I have left messages. They have destroyed my credit, caused me years of stress and I am now praying for a miracle that I can someway figure out how and who will help me get my money back and fix my credit and stop these people from doing this to someone else. This is a very condensed version of the harassment and abuse I have gone thru. If anyone out there has a suggestion I welcome them.

Where do we start. If there was a way to give them half star I would. I have account with them. First off they kept saying I was behind in my loans and that I missed several payment. Pulled up my bank accounts that showed I payed for the months they claim I didn't pay. Next they kept changing the months. So I emailed them bank statements showing that I paid for the next 6 months. Granted after I emailed my statement showing that I didn't owe. I didn't make that payment for that month. Honestly I forgot. They called me again showing I haven't payed them. Make a long story short. I checked my account again and in fact I didn't make that payment.

After the conversation I had with the lady my loans was suppose to be in forbearance. I argued with the lady, asked why she harassing me, my loan is in forbearance. Rep said the previous rep that I told I wanted to be in forbearance said I hung up before she can read it off. I told her "the call are monitor, pull the recording, I never hung up, she hung up on me." Next thing I know it's on my credit report. Where to start. I've been penalized time after time for mistakes that AES has made. Unfortunately they block any calls to higher supervisors at some hierarchical level and you are stuck with clueless agents that tell you conflicting information and end up passing on your troubles to another just as unqualified individual. Every promise they've made (no exaggeration) has fallen through or ended up to be "not according to their policy." There seems to be nowhere to go to truly get this company to correct itself and get their practices scrutinized.

It has taken me months to change my private loans to a different date so I can pay a specific amount of extra money towards those loans alone. After 16 phone calls, they said they had it correct and that it would be direct debited as usual. I just got notice that those loans were delinquent (I immediately paid them and called again). No notice from the company. Instead I happen to check to make sure and sure enough I knew this was going to happen. I also lost my perks (lower rates) because their company did not automatically debit one month randomly. I fought this as far as I could go and of course a letter was returned to me stating it was my fault and a "board" sat and denied my requests for those perks to be reinstated.

There are several incidents like this every year that take every ounce of energy to correct (if they do)! I can't trust ANYTHING they say to me...ever. I wish I could switch companies, but unfortunately it doesn't seem up to me who services my loans. I'm waiting to have some loans forgiven due to my public services. I'm sure this will get messed up even though they promised this to happen in January of 2016. My two larger private loans are currently (finally) at a low enough rate that banks can't beat. I'm stuck with AES. It is truly a nightmare. A completely incompetent company with incompetent employees (even if they sound nice over the phone).

I was going through some personal hardships at the time which included financial hardships. I got behind on payments with AES which resulted in my past due account being sent to a collections department. The collections department not surprisingly called me on a regular basis for payment. Well I eventually talked to a young lady who then told me that I needed to make a payment within the next two days to avoid my account being sent to charge off status. Well trying to avoid that I was able to borrow the money from a family member and with that payment was told my account was then current.

Well fast forward about a month later, I receive a notice in the mail telling me my account was now being charged off. I try to explain to the charge off company this is a mistake and they tell me to then contact AES. I contact AES and after a lengthy hold I was told they don't know what happened about it because they no longer have the account. I told them they have to know something because they sent it. They then tell me that they can make the decision at any time to send the account to be charged off if it is delinquent and when I made the payment it was already in the process. This is something that was never told to me when I was being pressed to make the payment. The whole point of the payment being made was to avoid this. I told them this was unfair. They apologized and then got quiet. Needless to say I got nowhere but put behind with this negative on my credit report and left to pay the full balance of $28,000. Ugly move AES.

I rehabilitated my student loans. Afterwards, the student loans were sold to AES. When I contacted AES requesting IBR forms on the phone, their representative desperately tried to get me to confirm MY student loans were SPOUSAL LOANS, so that my wife would have to share in the responsibility of paying them back. When I inquired why this wasn't an issue in rehabilitating the loans, the AES representative said she didn't know. Whenever I asked a question after that, she feigned being able to hear me, "I'm sorry sir, but I can't hear you. Something's wrong with your phone." Her selective hearing was an obvious deceptive practice!! I recorded the whole conversation on speaker phone at the time.

I denied the loans were "spousal loans" and she agreed to send me the IBR forms, but insisted the loans were Spousal Loans. Then, 1 hour later, after I filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, I received an email stating this: "We received your request for Income Based Repayment (IBR) on which you indicated that your spouse has outstanding Title IV Student Loans. In order for AES to process your request with your spouse's loan debt, we need the following information: Your spouse may grant AES temporary access of this information (60 Days). Your spouse must complete the following steps: Log into NSLDS (Nslds.ed.gov). From the Financial Aid Review page, select the Authorization button. Enter 700141 in the Organization Code field and click Submit."

Again, I adamantly denied the student loans were "Spousal Loans" and AES refuses to this day to send me the IBR forms without following the above steps. This is absolutely coercion. By law, if an individual asks (I've written and called) for IBR forms, then AES must provide the forms by law without ANY contingency. I didn't understand but was entirely surprised when I checked my credit score to find several late payments--I was informed that the late payments were attached to the deferment and would not be removed--Here I am a struggling single parent with a child with a disability and I am being penalized for asking for a deferment which they urge you to do--when I attempted to pay off the loan quicker than they wanted they doubled the payments to make it impossible--I asked them why is it that they were trying to penalize me for trying to pay of the loan--They denied it saying that was just their policy--The stories that I have been reading are very similar--something so dishonest and shady about this disgusting company.

As consumers we should be able to get a Class Action Suit going against them--They seem like they want to keep you in debt and basically discourage you paying off your debt with messing up your credit--I noticed before I started rapidly paying of the loan, they noted that I had only missed one payment--Something very crooked going on here--we need to take action!

Last year, I started having medical issues, so instead of having to drop my classes, I decided to take Spring 2014 off and just work on my health and getting things in order (I also had to move).

I submitted a deferment request to AES, which went ignored. I started getting phone calls. I spoke to two different people there and told them the issues I was having and one of them said she took care of the deferment - I just needed to send in my pay stubs. I faxed them in (Twice). I never got a phone call, letter, or email from them. I found out my deferment was not approved when I got a notice that I had negative items on my credit report. THREE negative items on my credit report. I then emailed them (I work all day and don't have time to sit on the phone unfortunately) ... about five times with LITERALLY no response. I then submitted a forbearance request (still no response) and I am currently even enrolled in school.

I start Fall Semester in three weeks... and they are still showing my payment is past due... a payment of over $1000.00 by the way, that I simply can NOT afford. I have loans with another co. and they have been very helpful and have not sent anything to my credit agencies and have already approved my forbearance request. This company is horrible and unfair. This company needs to be reported to all agencies! AES is a Predatory lender! Predatory lending is any lending practice that imposes unfair or abusive loan terms on a borrower. It is also any practice that convinces a borrower to accept unfair terms through deceptive, coercive, exploitative or unscrupulous actions for a loan that a borrower doesn't need, doesn't want or can't afford!!!!! This company told me on the phone that for the first 2 years, my 157 dollar monthly payment was interest only!!!!! THAT'S 3768 dollars!!!! SHAME ON YOU AES!!!! Let me tell you about a great lender, great lakes!!!! My original loan was 35000. 90% of my payment goes to the principal. Interest rate is very low!

I am paying on a 20 year student loan. Original balance was $10,391.16. My interest rate is 6.750%. My total repay amount is $18,203.91. I have been noticing my loan is not going down. My monthly payment is $114.50. Due to they charge me a daily interest rate not a monthly rate. How is a person ever to pay this loan down. I spoke with the customer service rep. She said my daily interest rate comes out to $2.20 daily. That comes out to be aver $68.20 going toward interest and only $46.00 toward the principal. I requested a amortization report for the breakdown of my payments from the beginning to the end. They do not have this to give.

I also requested something in writing stating that I'm charged a daily interest rate not a monthly. They don't have that but she can produce one for me. Also asked for a payment schedule. She said she will send that as well. My mind is blown that they do not inform you that you are paying a daily interest rate. Also I am now permanently disabled and they do not offer lower payments. The only way they will do that is if I was 30 days late, but because I am making on time payments, I do not qualify. What is a person to do!

I consolidated my loans at 4.75% before graduating with an MFA in 2006. Since March of 2007, I have been making monthly payments on my loans. Originally the lender was XPress Loan Servicing, but apparently AES acquired the loans in March, 2011 when XLS went out of business. I am concerned about several issues: I am charged late fees often, but without sufficient warning that my bill is due and that late fees will apply. These late fees are $20. XLS had not served such high late fees. Also, AES is reporting these late payments to the credit report agencies, diminishing my credit - despite the fact that I pay monthly. I also frequently pay a greater sum than the minimum due - sometimes several times as much. I am concerned that these higher payments are not being applied toward the principal amount of my loan and I am not sure where the money is being applied.

I estimate that I have paid at minimum $20,000, likely $25,000, to these two lenders (XPress Loan Servicing and AES) over the past seven years. Yet my principal amount due has only decreased by about $3,000. Though I have sometimes been on the interest-only plan, I have requested to be on the level plan for years. Yet I was just informed that I was on the interest-only plan until March 2014. Even if I were on an interest-only plan, at 4.75% interest rate, this does not add up. Where has this money gone? On April 24, I requested a full payment history from AES, including payments from XLS, going back to 2007. As of May 11, I still have not received this payment history. I called AES on Tuesday, May 6 and was told that the request is "being processed" and that I should have it by Friday, May 9.

I was with Great Lakes and then they sold my loan to AES.... Now there are issues with payment and the company canceled my autopayments (no fault on my part). They took my money for the last 6 months with no issues but since they took possession of my loan they decided they needed a new form 6 months later. Did I mention they didn't tell me when they did this? Also since I am not the main account holder it's like pulling teeth to get any information or to get my auto account set up again. Once we finally got things straighten out, I called to follow up on when the next loan payment was due. Online said it was paid an extra month out and I just wanted to confirm that was correct. All I needed was a yes or no answer and since my name was not on the account they would not provide me an answer (but my bank information is).

When I mention I was looking at our online account they blocked me out of it since I was not the main loan holder. The kicker is they then told me that if I wanted to play it safe I could still make payment. WTF!!! No thank you. Now I am back at square one and in the process of setting everything up again. Thankfully I am a month ahead and just wanted to confirm that was correct because knowing them they'll find a way to change it and add a late fee. I just don't understand how one can make payment on their loans when you get locked out of your account? Thank God this is just a small loan that is almost paid off. This is by far the WORST Loan Company I have ever dealt with. SALLIE MAE (dare I say because I hate them too) is better than AES.

I am sooooo fed up with this company. They don't have their ** together. I set up 2 loans on auto pay and they seem to always mess up and don't take out one or both and send me letters and call me multiple times to tell me I'm late. How can I be late on something when I have given you permission to take it out of my account? I have called them in the past about late payments on these and they always say I should put on auto pay. I tell them I did and then I get the usual “oh yes I see this.” Well if you see it then why aren’t you idiots doing it? Of course it causes late fees which they always refuse to take off. So they don’t do their jobs and I pay the late fee price. A few times when I have paid it they took out what I paid online then took out the direct deposit amount. I have one that I never put on auto deposit and sometimes am told it is late even though it’s not due for 4 or 5 more days or they automatically take out this payment.

I have called in the past to set them all as having the same due date. It did for a while then 2 due a few days before the other one. Now randomly 2 are due on the 5th of the month and the other on the 18th. I have no idea if changing the date caused the automatic withdrawal to go through, but shouldn’t have seeing as one out of 2 due on the same day was taken out. But I still get multiple phone calls and emails. I am so fed up with them and because of their screw ups and unwillingness to fix anything they are screwing up my credit. I have looked on how to fix this and unfortunately everyone who has had problems similar to this have had no luck fixing their accounts or their credit until it’s paid off. I looked into it and you can send all the proof you want but the Better Business Bureau or Credit people will contact them with what you send them.

Even with all the proof you send if AES says their account is accurate then they close it. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with and if I had known what I know now I would have either not gone to school or saved up until I could afford to pay on my own (even if it took me 40 years) because the way they harass you, your family (my dad cosigned for me so he gets more calls than me sometimes & they found out who one of my sisters is and send her mail addressed to me) and they are the ones not doing their jobs. I don’t know how they manage to stay in business and are able to get away with the things they do.

As part of the application process in 3/08, they required us to apply for all scholarships and assistance though we knew we would not be eligible. He deferred his start date from 7/08 to 10/08. At that time, when we set-up payment arrangements, I adamantly declined the PHEAA/NETS scholarships. However, a bill surfaced in 2012 saying the scholarship requirements were not met. We disputed but paid the amount owed since we would have paid that as tuition. Then, Feb 2014, my son received a phone call from AES saying he had a loan that was 120 overdue with accrued charges and interest! They apparently were mailing to an address that was never my son's mailing/billing address. They had the correct address in 2012.

I checked his credit status with 3 credit companies and he's had a "potentially negative" report from AES on all 3. He sent a check immediately to pay in full but report now reflects 150 days late. We have filed dispute with the AES/PHEAA,credit companies, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, PA Attorney General. What a scam for PTI and PHEAA and AES!!!! I want my son's credit reports corrected. I think he should be refunded the fees and interest, as well.

I have been in situations in my career where I've had times where work was unstable or had none at all. AES only worked with me to a point, then basically told me there was nothing they would do for me, even though I had always paid my bill every month. Most of my history with them, I have paid what I owe each month. When they decided they would no longer work with me during times of financial hardship, I made sure they knew that they would then be the last creditor that I would pay. Up until November of 2013, my payments had been made regularly, then I became unemployed and have still not found a job, not even a temporary one.

Knowing they would not work with me, I found it useless to call them to talk about it. I emailed them (after getting several phone calls) and told them my situation, reminding them that they would be the last to be paid, as I told them would happen years ago. They have Key Bank taking over my loan now, so I don't know where the fault lies for all of the constant phone calls every day. Suddenly, the calls stopped and then a letter threatening me with "any legal" options that would be at their disposal if I didn't come up with the $2,827 balance within ten days.

If I've been unable to scrape together the $85-$90 for the past three months to keep up on payments, how do they expect that I'll be able to get $2800 together in ten days? They make no sense, and I don't appreciate being threatened with some mysterious "legal" action. I never and still don't intend to default on the loan. If I were going to do that, why wouldn't I have done it when the loan was $10,000 instead of just $2800? You would think I owed them a massive amount of money, and even if I did, they should not be threatening me with anything when I already told them in writing that I have no job.

AES has on more than one occasion, intentionally misrepresented repayment options available to me thereby causing late fees to be assessed to my account. AES has harassed me with phone calls (up to 20 per day) over a balance due of only $150.00 (which was 7 days past due at the time), using automated phone systems to make calls that could not be returned because many of the calls were on weekend nights and holidays when AES's offices were closed. AES has routinely misapplied payments, including payoff amounts.

Most recently, I requested a payoff amount on loan, and paid that amount immediately (at that instant) online, and even though I was ahead on my payments on all loans, AES billed me yet another $46.00 the next day (as evidenced on line) for the same loan I had just paid off a day earlier using the payoff amount they gave me. Wanting to see just how far they would really go, I immediately paid them another $46.00 online. (That was day 2). The next day, AES billed me another $.01 for the loan that I had paid off - now, twice. They later claimed through their customer services people that this was accrued interest! On WHAT exactly?? These guys are criminals. That's for sure.

On another occasion, I mailed a "Payoff" check by mail to their designated payoff address; the $700 check was then incorrectly applied to all outstanding loans, and the loan was not paid off as I had specifically requested in writing. Only after raising hell was this resolved, and they still managed to milk another $200 out of me in the process. On yet another occasion, I mailed a monthly payment along with a letter detailing AES deceptive and illegal trade practices. AES refused to cash the check. They also refused to cash a replacement check.

Weeks and hundreds of dollars in late fees later, one of their "cracker jack" lawyers with the PHEAA, d. b., c. d. v. wrote me claiming that my checks had a restrictive endorsement on them (an outright lie). There was, of course, no mark on the checks that would have prevented them from being cashed as usual. Of the loans I have now paid off, I have paid 2X the original amount even though the interest rate has always hovered around 3%. I have never been in default. Yet the principal on these loans seems to have grown by leaps and bounds. Things that make you go "hmmm." I've filed complaints with the BBB, the FTC, and Consumer Affairs. At times, they have been forced to answer. Of course, as long as these criminals are protected by corrupt politicians, the banking lobby, and a lame duck, good luck. Mamas don't let your babies go to college on borrowed funds. Better they pick oranges for a living. Truly.

When you make your payments on time and online, AES is generally not a problem to deal with. If you don't pay or pay late, they will call you and your cosigner early and often. They don't always deposit paper checks in a timely manner. One of mine took more than 7 weeks after mailing to clear. Strangely, I didn't get a late fee that month. The late fees are pricey - $50. My payment is only $50/month. Maybe if you're paying $2-300/month, $50 doesn't seem like as much, but it killed me to write checks for double my payment knowing that half of it wasn't going toward my loan. Still, the late payments were my fault.

Another strange thing about AES at tax time, when I check how much student loan interest I paid for the year, the number is always very low and often $0. I'm honestly not sure how my payments are being applied, but I have another student loan I got from Wells Fargo at the same time as this AES loan and for the same amount, and every year I pay $300-500 in interest on that loan. It just doesn't seem quite right that they should be so different. Also, Wells Fargo sends me a nice little tax form promptly in January. AES makes you hunt around on your online account for it, and hope it's still there if you get audited.

When I've had to speak with AES in person, they've always been polite and helpful. I give AES less than 5 stars because these folks seem to have some serious issues with keeping their stuff straight. The situation that I had is admittedly a confusing one, but computers don't get confused. The people entering data into those computers do though, and garbage in = garbage out. There are some folks at AES putting some garbage into their computers. What happened was this: my dad co-signed on a loan for my brother and one for me with Bank of America, which were later bought by AES. Several years later, my brother died, and my dad took over his payments. Soon after, I was unemployed, and my dad took over my payments as well. My dad isn't real tech-savvy, so he had to call and have the bills transferred to his house so he could pay by check. AES stopped sending me a bill, and only sent one to him.

A few years later, I was employed, but my dad wasn't, and he moved in with me. He was getting 2 AES bills a month - one for me and one for my brother. I would open them and see which was mine and pay it. After he moved out, I called to request that my bill start coming in my name again. They were down with that. Then I asked if they could stop sending the one for my brother's loan. Of course, they wouldn't do that, my dad had to call himself. I was like "You're really going to keep sending a bill here, even though I told you he doesn't live here and he's not getting them?" Yep. I understand that it isn't really kosher to have them change his address, that they need to verify identity, etc. But surely they could stop sending the bill, or at least maybe call him and ask him what he wants to do. Even if they thought I WAS perpetrating some type of fraud, shouldn't they call him to let him know? And at the very least, if and when he did contact them to start getting a bill at his new address, I didn't want to still be getting one at my address.

The first month after this call, I got two bills in MY name, instead of one in my name and one in my dad's. So I open them both. Sure enough, there's mine, with its manageable payment of $50/month. I open the other one and my eyes about pop out of my head, looking at the bill in MY name, for $292, and the total owed is more double mine. It took me a few minutes to realize it was my brother's bill, now strangely in my name. I panicked for several minutes thinking that trying to solve the stupid mix-up with the bills and names and addresses was going to end up strapping me with my dead brother's outrageous student loan for the rest of my life.

I called them, and after explaining the situation, it wasn't all that difficult to get it resolved. But I had to ask, how does something like this happen? How do you just go and put another person's name on an account? I expressed how gravely concerning this all was, and the rep assured me it would all be straightened out. It was, as he was able to restore my online access after I had gotten myself locked out years earlier, and since then I just pay my bill online. I still get my brother's bill in my dad's name every month though. And my dad is one of those "I don't pay unless I get a bill people", and I only see him every couple of months to give him his mail, so I know he is getting a bill mailed to him too. So these ** are sending the same bill to the same person at two different addresses.

Other than what I have mentioned, AES is just another loan company. Whether the practice of loaning students money is bad or good isn't really the issue here. What they are doing is legal and done by hundreds of other companies. How you decide whether AES is good or bad is to compare how they treat you and handle your account with how other companies do it. In my experience, AES isn't awful, but they aren't great.

I got married on the 3rd of Oct which Oct had already been taken from my account and paid for but I knew my next payment would be due and I had already started the process of joining accounts with my husband and had closed the account my AES account direct debits from. So needless to say I call up and talk to one of their customer care reps. I explain to him I am in the process of changing banks. I have closed my existing account to join accounts with my husband and I do not have my new account info just yet. He assured me that it was perfectly fine, that he would put a stop on the soon to be direct debit to the now closed account. He asked me if I'd like to set up the new banking info now. I said, "Well I do not have it yet" and he said, "Okay, how would you be submitting your payment this coming month then" and I said, "I'll probably write a check."

So he sends me out a new bill dated for the 15th. I mail it out on Friday the 8th! I come into work on the 12th to a delinquency email stating I'm 11 days past due. So I call them and ask them why this is saying this yet I have a bill at home re-dated for the 15th and he proceeds to tell me there's no way I have a bill that says that because their system says I owed it on the first. I said, "I pulled a paper bill from your company out of thin air?" Not only did he say that, but he also stated that they have no record of me speaking to ANY of their reps about the matter at all!!!!

So he gets his supervisor on the phone (Renee) and this made me laugh because not only does she see that I spoke to someone but gives me the exact date I spoke to them but also tries telling me that they have no date change in their system. I said, "Ma'am I'm telling you I spoke to them" and why I called that day. "At first you guys denied me ever calling there or having record of the call. Now you see I called, even have the date, but are still denying the changes made." So the loan amount was originally for around 1,400 or 1,500 I've been paying on this account for almost a year.... My last statement the balance was for 300. She tries telling me that 300 is what I owe, that's past due and that I owe 1,265 left on the account itself!!!! I said, "WHAT?!!!! My payments are only 150 a month."

"I'm apparently late on ONE PAYMENT according to your system by 11 days (yet your bill says it's due the 15) which makes it NOT LATE but even still if it was my payments are only 150 a month," I said, "not to mention the whole loan itself was only for like 1,400 and it been paid ON TIME for almost a year. Where THE F do you get 1,265?!!!!!!" I said, "DO THE MATH. THAT DOES NOT ADD UP!!!!" So she blows right over what she just said and tries to go back to the date changes. I said, "No, no, no go back. Let's talk figures again because what you're telling me is you're trying to get me for another 1000 dollars that doesn't exist. Is that what you're telling me?" Well she blows right over that then proceeds to ask me if she's being recorded and I said, "If I am so what? Why are you being so paranoid if you're not a scam artist?!"

So long story short she wants me to fax over a copy of the last statement that CLEARLY says the balance is 300 and that the next payment was due on the 15th. She said once they have that they will review it and make any changes needed. WE WILL SEE ABOUT THAT... Poor company and just another flyby scam artist using the HARDWORKING AMERICAN TO GET A FAST BUCK AND THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!!!!!!

Please be aware - AES conducts business in a very unethical manner. I am a co-signer on my son’s student loan. I have finally caught on to what they are doing and in my opinion this is illegal. On more than one occasion, I have made a payment over the phone using the automated system. I have gone into detail below as to what happened. The first couple of times it happened, I did not fully understand what I could have done incorrectly and ended up making an additional payment. Please pay attention to how AES is fraudulently taking advantage of Co-signers on loans.

When I make a payment using their phone system I enter in my social security number and confirm the account I want to make the payment against. Entering in my SS number should immediately identify the loan on which I am the co-signer. After making a payment I receive a confirmation number and confirmation that the payment once posted will bring the account current and I receive information on the next payment date.

I recently made a payment on August 20, 2013 to bring the loan current. Two days after I made the payment to bring my son’s loan current, AES issued another letter stating the August payment was past due. I immediately called them and was told the payment I made, specifically intended for the loan I co-signed, was not fully applied to the one loan, it was distributed across other student loans that my son has with them. I am not the co-signer for these loans. I asked how they can take the payment I made that was intended for a specific loan and apply it to other loans. This was a blatant misuse of funds received from me.

I received several different stories: 1. I was told I must have entered in the wrong account. No so - I entered in my social security number and the account was located using my ssn. 2. Then they said, maybe I entered my Social Security number incorrectly - then how did they locate the loan at all? 3. I was then told - I did not make the payment. Their system showed the borrower (my son) made the payment. Again they could not explain how, my SSN number was entered, my bank account, etc… and I am in no way associated with the payment. Basically I was told, the confirmation I received documenting my payment and when the next payment was due, meant nothing!

Since the confirmation code I received meant nothing, the rep I was speaking with refused to reverse the amount applied to the other loan and apply it correctly. I demanded to speak with a supervisor, and then another supervisor. In the end, I would have to send documentation to show that I made the payment, however the account would still show as in default until this was cleared. And of course, I was given the option of making another payment. They also suggested I set up automatic payments from my checking account. NO WAY would I ever give them access to deduct payments from my checking account.

Please be aware, by saying any payments they receive, regardless of who makes it, shows it was made by the borrower in their system, they can then take that payment and allocate it to other loans, leaving the intended loan in default. In doing this, AES can continue billing and calling, and practically ruining your credit standing by continuing to report the loan in default. And, at the same time, the late fees continue to build up.

I had a small loan through AES years ago for graduate work and did not have any problems with AES or paying off the loan. Everything I have seen written on this site has happened to me. I decide to pursue my doctorate and have been paying on this loan, but there doesn't seem to be a dent in the amount owed. I have tried to set up automatic withdrawals but either my loan is past due or the paperwork has not been received - any excuse to keep the interest rates high. I pursued doctoral work through Walden University (online), where it took my advisor over a year to get my plan of study correct (I had it correct the first time I submitted the POS) and the coursework was subjective to instructors who knew less about the topic areas than I did.

When I inquired about leaving Walden, I was told by Walden that it would be better not to withdraw from the university and let the money from my loans stay on my account (which is considered acceptable by AES and other universities). Walden collected money from AES for courses I did not take and refused to return the money to me or AES. I asked both Walden and AES to investigate and sent a detailed chronology, records, emails, and anything related to my course of study and student loans showing that I accumulated a large student loan bill, without receiving services in return from Walden (to me, this is fraud).

Long story short, AES made ONE inquiring phone call to Walden that couldn't have taken more than 5 minutes because they called me back after the phone call. While I dislike sending AES money that I don't think I owe, I send them a payment every month and generally pay more than the minimum. I can't count how many times I have been notified that my payments have not been received or are late even though my bank records show payments were made. It is a racket and we are held hostages.

I've recently had a very troubling experience with AES. (This was not the company which I contracted the original loan from). My last payment, sent by mail, for the correct, full amount, was processed incorrectly due to what they indicated was an incorrect "scanning" glitch. My check was read incorrectly for $80 less than the payment. My August statement indicated I was "delinquent" $80. I called them and spoke to someone in "finance management" who verified this, but did not indicate what I should do. Three days later, after not hearing back, I called again to find out what the status was, and I was told to add $80 to my next payment to avoid being "delinquent." I told them I was NOT delinquent - it was their mistake. Then I received an e-mail stating that late charges were being added to my account. I was furious - and said so. Finally, after being frustrated with getting no coherent person to speak with, I made a phone payment to resolve the fiasco.

Now I'm wondering if this company isn't playing the same game that the mortgage servicers did. Incorrectly applying payments, adding fees to accounts, etc. My advice to all who have this horrible servicer is to pay attention and do NOT put up with their shenanigans. I plan to pay my loan off as soon as possible and get out of this nightmare. Save every piece of paper, document every conversation, and scrutinize the paperwork.

I have been a customer of AES since 2008 and have never had issues because I pay my bills on time. I am also educated on how my account works which some of you could benefit from.

Where to start... You have to be proactive. Go to the website, look at lower payments, deferments and forbearance on your own. Don't sit around waiting for your account to fall delinquent and then ** because they credit reported you. When you're late, a creditor has every right to contact you, your co-signer and negatively impact your account (with late fees or negative crediting). If you don't qualify for anything then you obviously make enough to pay your bill if you cut back on some other things and live within your means instead of far above them.

They offer an interest rate reduction if you do direct debit and if you make so many on time payments, you get an even bigger reduction no matter how you make your payments. You have no choice in your servicer for Federal loans unless you get them consolidated somewhere else and even then they could be sold right back to AES. They don't have to ask your permission before doing this. As far as income based repayment, you have to be careful. If you don't reapply or don't re-qualify at some point your payments will balloon to pay off within 10 years. So be careful and make sure if you apply for it that your income won't be changing much over the next 25 years. Private loans have no options. Don't take them out...ever.

Someone made a comment about the calls after just a few days. Would you rather they negatively report you or add fees because you forgot? If they waited until you were 60 or more days past due it would be too late to stop that from happening. The calls are to avoid that. For co-signers, don't co-sign unless you realize that if the borrower doesn't pay, you are just as responsible as them and you can be negatively credit reported too.

It seems like a lot of you just don't understand what it means to take out a student loan.

When you're making additional payments, it doesn't pay down the principal. Instead you get credits to future payments. They call this a "Pay Ahead status". What you can do is write them a letter asking them to remove you from Pay Ahead status, so that your extra payments will then start being applied to principal (pay your loan down quicker). None of this is clear when dealing with most at the call center or even online, but we talked to a very helpful employee today. I forgot her name, but she was great.

I was working with EdFinancial Services which apparently switched me over to American Educational Services without contacting me for anything. Then I was called by American Educational Services and asked the same questions that EdFinancial Services would ask periodically. The guy on the phone pretended to be willing to help just as EdFinancial Services had always done. Periodically EdFinancial Services would call me and offer me one of several payment plans; one was called deferment; another was called forbearance if I could not pay at that time.

Then, I got the letter demanding a payment while these people, American Educational Services, know from what I have told them that I cannot pay them, and from what I see in the comments at this website, it looks like I may have to declare bankruptcy to get them off of me. You cannot get blood from a turnip. I do not like lawsuits, and I see below that you give me the option of having an attorney call me. I will not say below that I want an attorney to call me, but if some attorney bothers to actually read this first and then make the call, I would consider hearing what an attorney has to say. My parents and I have, for a few years now, been struggling to make loan payments due to this company. I will admit that we were not fully aware of what we were getting ourselves into when we took out education loans with this company. Due to my original loan agreement, I am unable to get a lower monthly payment and pay off the loans at the preset time. I understand that when you sign on the line, you are held to those conditions. At the same time, considering the economy, the company at least needs to be willing to offer some leeway in terms of payments, irregardless of the said agreement. My parents manage to get as close to the installment amount as they can every month, but it still isn't enough.

I have tried to do private student loan consolidations through two other banks, Wells Fargo and Suntrust and to no avail; I did not qualify for consolidation. Now mind you, these loans are being reported as negative to the credit agencies but at the same token, I am stepping out there trying to make the situation better and to also get our (my cosigner and mine) credit rating up. Nobody is trying to work with us or give us a chance and we just can't afford $500 payments every month. AES is unreasonable. Something needs to be done.

Well my last payment to bring my bill current was due for 06-03-1-2013 and bill collectors still called even after they received the payment. A rude nasty rep called and said that the payment was received, but they haven't posted it to the account. Therefore, I am still considered late even though it is their fault. The rep stated that he was going to place a note in the system that I was refusing to pay.

The rep called my sister, the co-signer, and my sister called me to listen in. The rep told her that I defaulted and the payments I made, and was told it would make my bill current were partial payments??? WHAT??? The rep I spoke with to set up the payment never mentioned anything about partial payments (and they say calls are recorded?). My sister told him that she didn't know what game the company was playing, but it wasn't right. My mom told him that it was wrong to do people like that and the rep told my sister, "Tell your mom to shut up! And you all people like to talk. HAHAHA." My original loan was from Chase, and a day later, it was purchased by American Education. At first everything was fine. I made payments on time and usually more than required. One time I used my own account to pay and got calls from AES all day about nonpayment. When I told them I paid, they wanted the electronic check number, or to pay AGAIN while things were sorted out. My bank got on the phone with them, explained there is no check number, but they wouldn't stop. So I was out double until they fixed the mess.

I paid on time for 6 years and experienced a layoff. I called them immediately to set something up but they refused to offer a different repayment. Their agents even left messages that I would be taken to court (on my work and house numbers!) My dad had heart surgery but they kept calling a number they should NOT have called (I deleted it since I moved) and threatening! Finally, when I called them, I somehow got a normal person on the phone and he told me about deferment which although BAD would be affordable while I get on my feet. He slashed payments by 80% for 2 years although after I got a job I paid the same amount as original.

I have also had issues with them mixing up my loans so that it looks like one is overpaid and the other one is delinquent. Then they start their automated calls, which cannot be stopped even if THEY ARE WRONG! Last time that happened, the woman on the phone was beyond rude and refused to fix the issue - she was very condescending. I was a Regional Sales manager at the time and she was the WORST example of customer service ever. After I got on the phone with her manager, the problem was fixed in 2 min.

Biggest issues are customer service, help with payments if something like the whole economy tanks and obviously people need help (some kind of short-term plan for at least 3-6 months while you get on your feet), and the automated calls that won't stop even if they messed something up. A co-worker had them call her deceased father who co-signed and her mother was grief stricken. They tried to have her pay the debt! I really hate that they can sell these loans off, so you think you are dealing with your bank and then have some strange place in charge of your loans.

This loan has switched owners three times now in the past 6 years. In the past, we have never been late and use automatic direct debits. I take care of all the paperwork for the loan including the payments. For some reason, I noticed the payments decreased by $24 which therefore increased the loan payback by 2 more years. I preferred to pay the same amount I had previously paid in order to pay off the loan quicker.

The rude, young woman I spoke to never gave me an opportunity to ask any questions since I was not on the account. She said she would mail a form out for my husband to complete/sign in order to add me on the account. In 2010, I could not afford to pay the current monthly payment due to AES and I requested a reduced amount. AES declined my request since I did not make a low enough salary. Instead, I was informed a 9-day grace period was authorized. Nonetheless, my account was made current in 2010. In spite of my communication, I was unaware that I would be billed the same amount that I could not afford to pay to begin with or that AES was submitting a delinquent report to a credit bureau. AES' methodology is that it does not matter what you cannot afford. To pay the bill is expected to be made.

This type of occurrence is an unjust business practice. It is better to have a client maintain payments by acquiring a lower monthly fee opposed to not making any payments. It is a grave stressor, yet I still remain current with my account. Any students seeking educational loans should indeed seek out former loan recipients to understand what loan companies truly have their best interest and is willing to work with individual's pending life circumstances. In many cases, loan recipients have had shark tank experiences at various levels. My experience is not a golden answer to the screams for help, but it adds to the multitudes in hope that changes will occur within the round table of AES executives and outlying staff in providing quality services and meeting essential needs to families.

I spent an hour on the phone to straighten out the problem with them. The representative at that time told me the correct payment should be $225.58 and that I should receive a correction statement in a few days. I was shocked! As at the time I was only working PT - I had no means of paying the bill as I was struggling just to make the basics. I asked what other options were available to me; I was advised there was nothing they could do and proceeded to use what I would consider scare tactics. I continued to ask if there was something else available to me. I was still told there was nothing and that they would proceed with collections, default... It wasn't until I spoke with someone at Great Lakes that I was advised (almost a year later) that there was another avenue! An income based repayment plan - no one at AES advised that this was even an option; and as this option has been around for more than 3 years, ignorance cannot be claimed.

This firm, in my opinion, is not concerned with working with their clients and their situations to ensure that they are able to make payments - I would liken them to some of the shenanigans of the mortgage providers. At this moment, I have filled a complaint with the FTC, BBB and the AG's office of the state of PA. Someone at some point should have advised of my options to try and work out a workable solution for all concerned. They clearly are not interested in working with their clients... This morning, at approximately 9:13 am, I received a phone call from an AES representative. I did not get a chance to obtain her name or contact information. However, our brief conversation was very disconcerting. She called to tell me my bill was 11 days late, which is true; we are not often late but this month came up a little short, and we were waiting until the 15th of March to make a payment. We have very little contact with AES staff but when we do, the exchange is usually short and frustrating. It is exacerbated by their rude and cold demeanor. This time was no different. I let her know I was taken aback by her tone and there was no change from her.

My husband and I both have student loans with AES since 2007 (originally $60,000 in 3 loans - payoff is currently a little over $100,000). They are paid every month. I can handle the variable interest rate that make budgeting difficult (also the reason we are not on auto payment like we are with Sallie Mae), and AES refuses to allow us to move to a fixed rate. I can even handle that AES will not allow us to remove our co-signers or consolidate our 3 loans. However, I cannot abide poor customer service. It’s unreasonable and it’s unnecessary. We are paying customers and we do so with little difficulty. There is no justification for the poor treatment.

I tried to pay the balance of my wife's loan and they wouldn't take my payment information. I mentioned I had been using her account online to make the payments and they told me that was a breach of security, and then locked the account. My wife then called and they were rude to her also. They told her to "call back when you figure it out" when she asked why a payment had not shown up. This is a very unprofessional service and I can't believe that the US government would hire such a company.

I took out a total balance of $37,964.49 in student loans so that I could complete graduate school. I also worked while in school to keep my balance low. When I graduated, my loans were initially owned by Citibank. They were able to consolidate my loan, offer lower interest and give me an additional interest credit for automatically debiting my loans from my bank account. All was fine until 2012, when my loans were transferred without my permission to American Education Services. My loan payments suddenly went from $290 per month to $391.65 and it appeared that my loan balance had increased significantly (I now owe $10,000 more than I did when I took out the original amount).

Repeated phone calls to AES resulted in having to deal with the rudest customer service people I have ever encountered. On two occasions, they asked me to hold, then hung up the phone. Exasperated, I finally put my loans on forbearance so that I could have time to work something out (they were starting to make harassing phone calls to my dad's workplace!). I requested paperwork so that I could apply for the Income Based Repayment plan (which I found out about on my own. They did not share that this option was available despite my multiple phone calls asking for assistance). I filled out the paperwork that they sent me complete with W2s and all other information they asked for. I even included an additional letter, explaining how and why my income decreased significantly last year.

I was told I would receive a reply by mail. Imagine how devastated I was when I opened a letter dated 2/23/13 that had the details of my new payment (without any explanation at all) and my new payment (despite all the info I provided) is now $14.50 higher per month than it was before! Not the kind of assistance I was looking for when I spent half a day filling out the paperwork. I called to ask why I apparently did not qualify for income based repayment on 3/6/13 (again, they did not tell me this; I had to figure it out based on the new payment they sent me) and their answer was "The application you filled out was outdated so you need to fill out a new one." Excuse me? I filled out the application they gave me and send it back in within 30 days. They then stated that they need my handwritten date on the W2s I sent in! This was not on their original instructions. Besides, all W-2s have dates printed on them. Why would I need to handwrite it?

I asked these questions from the customer service representative who said "Well, basically, it's not your fault but you need to fill this paperwork again anyway." Great, so based on my experience plus the hundreds of other complaints available online about this company, they are going to keep coming up with new paperwork for me to fill out every time I try to work out a reasonable payment plan. Devastated does not even begin to describe how I feel right now. I had to get a graduate degree in order to become certified in my current field. I chose to work during grad school to keep my loan balance low. I had no idea I was going to be dealing with fraud, lies, and deceit every month until I turn 53 (which is supposedly when I will have paid these off under my current plan. I'll believe it when I see it).

These people have to be put out of business. I understand that I owe money on my student loans and am more than willing to pay a reasonable payment each month if I see that my loan balance is actually decreasing, but I no longer wish to deal with this fraudulent organization. I never had these issues with any of my other lenders. I just filed an FTC complaint against them and I recommend that everyone experiencing issues with AES to do the same.

In 2003, I took out a private student loan from AES (American Education Services) for $6,000 and now it is $13,133.00. I am not sure how it became that amount. I was paying the monthly payment until I could not afford it anymore. This was when I started getting harassed by AES. I moved back home to California because I could not afford to live on my own anymore. Once I was on my feet, I called and started back making payments. I got back in school and took a work study job making $550-$650 per week. I called to set up a different payment plan with the collection agency and they would not cooperate.

In 2008, they called me and pretty much yelled at me for 20 minutes. I told them I was doing my best to make payments. I was also still living on my own out of state. I then told them to please stop yelling and attempting to intimidate a payment out of me. They yelled some more and hung up. I called AES back, made a payment arrangement and made a complaint. Nothing was ever done. I was told that they would notate my account so they have record of this. The debt collector also called my mother's job requesting payment. My mother is disabled and has limited income.

In October 2012, I received phone calls from the Law Offices of Patenaude and Felix on behalf of AES and they wanted me to pay $600 a month and I only make about $650 a month. I asked if something else could be done and they said that I could pay $5,000 down and pay $372 a month. I told them that I made around $600 and could pay $50. They said no; they would only take $5000 down and $600 per month. I feel that both options are not possible for me to do right now. Suing me is a form of harassment. I cannot afford legal fees as a student living on my own with a disabled mother. I should not be subjected to this, since I tried to cooperate.

How did a $6000 loan that I have been paying on become $13,000? This does not seem legal. I have called to see a statement of transactions so I can understand the charges to AES and I have been denied. I do not have money for legal representation. They are forcing me into court, which they can afford, and I am trying to cooperate. They are now fighting me. I should not have to be intimidated in court. They have been intimidating and bullying me for years. All the while, I continue to try and pay off the loan.

I've set up automatic payments and have no idea why they are calling on a weekend. This is unprofessional for 2 reasons; (1) fix the sign-in system so that user names and passwords are recognized; and (2) call when they are open, so issues can be addressed immediately.

AES doesn't care and why should they? They are glad to lend you the money knowing that they've got you and your uncertain future. Now, all I get is harassment. I let them know my situation and they couldn't care less. They still have no compassion even when I'm returning to school. The phone calls they state are mandatory, a complete overkill. After 2 years of having them remove my father's number, they straight up lie to me every time saying that it has been removed, but the calls still come. Honestly, what do they care? They can just pass it on to a credit collection agency to do their threatening and dirty work for them. When I was young, this partnership seemed legit but I can tell you it isn't. I won't make the same mistake twice.

AES will never get my children's business, another family member's business, and I will advocate against them to friends and even complete strangers. The years of stress and harassment they have demonstrated to all involved with them by far exceeds more than I have borrowed from them. My loans will be moved from them and I'll become an outspoken public advocate against them. Those are the facts. My only hope is that someone will read this and seek alternative options rather than borrowing from a private lender.

I have called numerous times, and I get a different story every time I call. When calling customer service, I've been hung up on, lied to, dismissed, and yelled at. My last call was yet another unhelpful experience. After complaining about terrible service I have received and telling the senior associate, Dave, that they should revise their refund procedures, I was lectured about the numerous customer service awards they have received. I was then told that I will have to wait another month before they will even look into the problem. Not an example of award winning service if you ask me. AES claims that they refund payments in the same manner that they receive them; however, this is not true. I would advise any customers to make payments directly to AES via check. The company will do nothing to assist you if you encounter a problem with a problematic payment with a bill pay service. If you have a choice, do not do business with AES.

I have several loans serviced through American Education Services (AES), which I am assuming is a subsidiary of Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance agency, and have been working with AES since my loans went into repayment approximately four years ago. I am not always financially able to make my payment on or before the due date at the beginning of the month due to my current income status and financial burden (with rent taking precedence). In that case, I will typically perform my due diligence and call them to let them know when I expect to pay. Whether I do my due diligence and call or not, I still receive multiple phone calls (sometimes up to six per day) to collect on my payment owed. These phone calls will begin anytime from the same day due that month to up to thirty days past due, which I have never exceeded. I even just received a phone call today after posting a payment yesterday.

These same phone calls are also placed to my co-signer, who gets stressed out and concerned for her credit for good reason. These phone calls are unreasonable, excessive and harassing. I do keep in contact when I will be late on a payment. I have never been over thirty days past due on the private loans in question and have a record of making monthly payments for the past three plus years. I have tried to change my due date to no avail, explaining my financial necessity for it. I was denied a change in date due to company policy, stating that due to my federal loans being past due, a date change could not be honored. I have further done my due diligence to prevent these federal loans from being past due by calling months in advance to verify that I still had forbearance/deferment time and was told I indeed did by one person. However, months later when I received the bill, I was told I did not. Now to my dismay, my credit has been affected.

Over the past five years, I have had over twelve student loans serviced by four or five different loan companies (totaling $225K) and I have never experienced the excessive volume of calls, if any, from them that I do with AES. I have also never had such poor customer service with different agents giving me different answers; not having their information straight; or bullying me over the phone like they do with AES. I have repeatedly asked them to stop, but have been told that it is within their right to call if I don't keep my account current. To me and many consumers out there trying to make ends meet and doing their best to pay off their debts, this is simply bad business practice.

I have had them send it back every year because of a check box, unsigned copy of a tax return, required additional documentation and information on my spouse (I have no spouse), lost documents (three times one year). These are all reasons they deny my application. It is transparently obvious that AES does everything it can to disqualify me from the IBR program. I have been through this for four years now and every year, it is the same. Last year, I phoned the Department of Education Ombudsman after months of wrangling and poof! They told her it had already been corrected. Suddenly, when the Department of Ed was looking, they became competent. Beware of AES.

They seem to be the greasy mobsters of Student Lending. I still do not have a spouse. The rep said they want both a tax return and alternative documentation of income. What? They will not take documents good enough for the Internal Revenue Service? I graduated college 3.5 years ago with several student loans (some personal and some from the Federal Government). I set up an automatic payment for the end of each month as the due date on all my loans is on the 4th of every month. I also set up the monthly payments to pay a little more than was required on each loan. I wanted to pay down the principal as fast as possible.

Without fail, for the past 3.5 years, I made a monthly payment every month. However, because I was paying more than asked, I have ended up "paying ahead." As I pay ahead, AES has taken the extra money and applied it to upcoming payments. This means that as I pay each month, AES can claim that my payment at the end of the month is not to be applied to the following month's bill but instead will be applied to the monthly bill for several months into the future. Because the payment is being applied to several months into the future, AES claims I did not pay in a "timely manner" (i.e. not within 15 days before or after the due date because I was paying several months’ time ahead), and thus took away my interest rate reduction incentive for 48 consecutive on-time payments.

I believe this is a terrible business practice that should be discouraged or even disallowed. In my case, I have paid every month without fail and paid more than I must. AES should not be allowed to set up billing rules that can remove interest rate incentives by a technicality. In no reasonable person's estimation have I been delinquent or not discharged my responsibilities. Thank you for taking the time to hear my complaint. I hope something can be done to benefit the many responsible borrowers who have experienced this as I have.

I have been paying this loan since 2008, almost twice what the payment is supposed to be. There was a 10% origination fee and I gained interest for 6 months after I graduated college when my loan was deferred. I can't understand how more than 50% of my payment went to interest when my interest rate is only 7.75%. I have looked into American Education Services complaints online and I saw that many people have the same complaints and concerns about their loans as I have. I can echo everything others have reported regarding their trials with AES. We also have been harassed with phone calls, letters, etc. & have dealt with many rude, disrespectful "customer service" people. After years of frustration, we decided to take out a loan from our local bank to pay off AES & get them off our backs. AES gave us the pay-off amount on 7/31 for 8/5 & 8/10. A check to pay off over $30,000 was mailed on Monday, 8/6.

We thought that was the end of our dealings with AES - but no. On 8/24, we rec'd a letter saying we were past due on our acct (and we all know the harassing that goes with that). We called AES and said a check was sent to pay off the loan. To our disbelief (although when it comes to AES, nothing should surprise us), AES told us they mailed the check back on 8/23 because they rec'd the check on 8/13 & the payoff amount was not correct because of it being rec'd after the 10th & now they want almost $200 more. Several things didn't add up:

    (1) They said we should've allowed 7 to10 days for them to receive the money, then on 7/31, they should've given a payoff amt for 8/15, since 8/10 on 7/31 was already 10 days away,
    (2) They posted receiving the payment on 8/13 (a Monday), so we all know it had to have been rec'd on or around the 10th,

    (3) Why on earth would they send the check back over 2 weeks later & not take the time to call & tell us what was going on.

We all know they call about everything else to the point of harassing. I spent over 1-1/2 hr on the phone speaking to at least 4 different people & 3 of them would only give the scripted messages they're told to give. I finally got a hold of someone who was more willing to help. I don't understand why when those of us who are trying to do the right thing get harassed so badly.

No wonder so many people are defaulting on loans - AES makes it almost impossible. I, like many others who have complained, don't understand when one is paying your loan at the amount they've set, why we are not making any headway & actually going backwards on the loan amount. I think there is a lot wrong at AES & I think they need to have an investigation done on them. I don't know if they read these complaints, but there are a lot of things that need fixing at AES. I will be glad when we get things squared around (hopefully that will happen) with them & we can wash our hands from them.

I would tell anyone looking to take out a student loan to steer clear of AES. With so many similar complaints, something's not right. I can't express my dissatisfaction with AES enough. My posting here just scratches the surface of what AES has put us through! If you hear AES, run, run like the wind!

I am 25 years old and have accumulated over 100k because of higher education. I am paying three loans now that can not be under deferment, which is perfectly fine. Last year, when these three loans kicked in, it was understood that either my cosigner or myself can make a payment. I have contacted AES about this and they said that is perfectly fine: "Cosigner can make a payment through his account and it will go towards the loans." I have followed their order in thinking this was fine. My dad then later posted my payment through his online banking to the AES service of the correct amount and a few days before the due date. A couple of weeks later, I kept getting harassing phone calls on my cell and primary number, along with letters and calls to my cosigner. They called me to discuss that my payment was not made and I am delinquent for "x amount of days". I kept arguing saying that my cosigner had posted the amount to the service thru his online banking and in return they would reply: “We don't have it and it will probably take a few days more if it was done my online banking.”

I kept getting these harassing phone calls for at least a few months. I do not understand why the hell they are calling when I'm indeed paying my loan off. I was finally sick of them calling me, so I returned the favor and started harassing them and questioning them on why they keep harassing me about my payment if the amount posted from my cosigner was paid. I continued to tell them that I have online proof from my bank account that shows that the money was taken and they continue to say this line: “It’s ok if your cosigner pays and it will be put towards the loan amount.” I then asked if I should make the payment myself in order to avoid this harassment and they continued to say, “No, either you or your cosigner can make a payment and it should affect anything.”

After several months of my dad making several of the payments and getting the harassing phone calls, I finally got so fed up and I called AES. After four or five months, a lady finally told me that I should be making the payments through my account to specify the loan amount. I had then explained to her that I kept asking everyone from customer service about paying thru my account and then they said no, it would be fine whoever makes the payment. She then informed me from now on to make payment thru my account to assure that the payment was made.

Fast forward to three months ago: I decided to continue my master's program here in NY and applied to several loans in which I got declined. I questioned the reason why because I have a great credit score and pay everything on time. I got my fourth decline from my bank and started crying when I started thinking maybe I won't be able to pursue my master’s degree. I later called one of the banks, which told me that my credit score has been negatively reported and my credit isn't great. I then got worried because I know my credit score was in the 800s. I discussed this with my dad who later confirmed that my score was good. I later called another bank who later told me that AES had negatively reported me to the credit bureau. I didn't understand why and I called AES who then gave me the run around, blaming that it was my fault.

I continued to tell them that I have been paying on time and they failed to tell me that my loan payment had to be paid thru my AES account. Yet again they didn't want to take any blame and kept saying that it was my fault for failing to pay. Last month, my dad made a $200 payment on my loan thru his account and told me that he had done this. I later called AES and told them that my dad made the payment through his account and so it will be there in a few days. They told me that they would make a note, but I constantly still got harassed again. A week later, I went on my AES account and saw that a payment of $200 was made by the co-signer and saw this message: "You are currently in delinquent for 15 days.” I didn't understand because they took the money and said they received it. I checked the payment history and saw that AES has posted the $200 to my federal loans that are not in repayment till 2013. I immediately called and screamed, saying that they had no common sense and can't put two and two together when they saw a delinquent loan account and $200 paid. I later realized that before, when my dad would post money on my account, AES took it upon themselves to pay my loans that were in deferment and not those that are "in school payment".

Due to their unprofessionalism and lack of sense, my credit score along with my cosigner (dad) has been affected. They have no remorse and can't admit that they messed up and are ruining a student’s chances of furthering her education. This is the worse education service and something has to be done! They ruined my life and my future. I am forever going to have this under my credit report and I can't do anything about it. AES is horrible and has unprofessional service.

Forcing Me To Pay My Loans While I'm In School - My name is Chris and I am currently finishing up my MA at Buffalo State College. I have been attending this institution since Fall of 2011. For the entire duration of my schooling at Buffalo State, I have never once dropped below half-time status, so when AES contacted me last year to inform me that I would have to begin paying on one of my loans, I was completely dumbfounded. It has always been my understanding that for as long as you are attending a university of higher learning, maintaining at least a half-time status, you will not be forced to pay on your student loans - they'll be in a deferment status. While trying to achieve a degree that will give me a better chance at finding work, I am now being penalized for seeking higher education. I have been paying on one loan for over a year now and as of a couple weeks ago, AES is now forcing me to pay on at least two other loans. I work part-time and live on my own. My family is not in the financial situation to help me with these payments and I am finding myself in a panic right now, thinking that I may have to give up putting gas on my car for work and school in order to pay these loans.

I contacted AES a year ago to inform them that I was in school. I sent proof of enrollment, to which they simply replied I am not entitled to deferring my loans any further. I am twenty five and have been in school since I was eighteen. I have never heard anything from any financial loan officers throughout all of this time that would ever give me the impression that I would have to pay on my loans while I was in school. I feel that this is extremely unfair, given that I haven't even been allowed the opportunity to seek employment with my degree yet. I have lost my grace periods on these loans, which will hurt me immensely while I seek employment and honestly, I would love to consider going for my PHD, but I am now viewing this through the lens of complete and utter impossibility. How will I be able to go through what may very well be another four to seven years of schooling, while having to work for the university to secure my financial support, making nothing more than maybe $5,000.00 a year and afford paying these loans and any other bills that I may have? How will I eat? Where will I sleep? And how exactly will I be able to live?

I contacted AES and explained to them that I was in school still, at the appropriate status, and that I sent another proof of enrollment, to which I was told to simply pay or fill out a form that would cut the payments in half for a year then the payments would go up to where they were originally plus the half that I cut out. I had to go through Google to find a document archive for AES in order to find the in-school deferment form because they do not make it readily available on their site. I feel that what they are doing is unethical and completely unfair. I would love to know how many other students are in the same situation as me. I am currently finishing my thesis and preparing for my comprehensive examination. This is a time of great stress, but is also a time of fantastic pride or at least it should be. How can I be happy about where I am, when I'm not even being allowed the opportunity to think ahead to the next step in my life's journey? I have many dreams and I have many goals, but now I am finding the doors and windows of opportunity being nailed shut before me.

Why is it that my friends who are students, who have been attending school as long as myself or longer, do not have to pay on their loans? They aren't all personal loans and they aren't loans that asked for you to pay the interest while you were in school. They are simply common student loans! I have loans through Chase bank that are as old as these ones and I am not being asked to pay on those although I have noticed that AES has bought some of them as well and they are in grace period status! I cannot even begin to understand why I am in this situation and furthermore, I cannot even begin to understand how this company can be so unwilling to work with students to find solutions to these issues. I need help with this issue, but I have no idea where to turn to for help. I assumed that this would be one of the first steps to finding a solution.

I hope that someone can contact me with advice on the situation. Maybe I have been misinformed by financial aid counselors throughout my years of higher learning? Maybe AES is correct? I truly feel that American Education Services has wronged me though and I do wish to find a solution to these pains. Any guidance and advice will be greatly appreciated!

My loan was a private loan consolidated with a fixed interest rate and has been purchased sold time and time again without authorization causing the interest rate to change from fixed to variable and as high as 11% on some billing statement. My loan was sold to AES and is still under the variable terms changing the number of payment from $180 after the refinance to $320 payments. This is unfair and no one will explain to me or provide me the master promissory note. I have sent e-mails and phone calls and have not been able to get anywhere.

Now, they are telling me I need to write them a letter to state my complaint and provide documentation. They should be providing me documentation and I have not received any from them other than a billing statement. All payments have been made and are current, but this is not fair reporting or fair loan terms. I am now receiving phone calls from two servicing agencies telling me I owe them for the same loan. I have disputed the terms on my credit report and it is showing as pending under fair reporting and has been pending for almost 6 months now.

I have paid $37,000 to AES over the course of five years and yet the principal of the loan has only reduced by $1,000. Also, when I consolidated my loans in 2006, both AES and ACS, another student loan servicer, claimed to be the new servicer. We agreed that I would make payments to ACS. I made payments to ACS for six months in 2006. None of those payments were applied to my loan and, unbeknownst to me, AES accrued interest on my loan. I am now asking AES and ACS to provide the promissory notes and other agreements. I do not understand how the principal could have reduced by only $1,000 after five years of payments totaling $37,000.

If I could rate this company lower, believe me I would. I co-signed on two loans for my son's tuition. Because of a divorce and misunderstanding as to which party was responsible for paying which student loan, the National Collegiate Trust loan was turned over to AES for collection. I contacted Kim with AES on May 9, 2011 and worked out a payment plan for $200 per month toward the loan. This amount was to be lowered after three months, but I continued, in good faith, to send the $200 even after the three month period ended.

My son and I have now started to receive harassing phone calls throughout the days and nights from Rebecah and Valerie, indicating that the money I am sending isn't enough, and that the last payment received ( December 9, 2011) had been applied toward the September 2011 payment. They are threatening to start assessing late fees, and with taking legal action against us, despite the "good faith" $200 monthly payments I have been making faithfully since May 2011. I spoke with both Rebecah and Valerie today (19Dec11), and advised them that there is no additional money available to apply toward these loans, and that I wanted to continue making the $200 payments. They both insisted that my efforts were not good enough. The only alternative I have is to stop paying anything and letting the account go into collections.

I contacted AES again, after having time to calm down, and spoke with Priscilla who indicated that she agreed that something is better than nothing, but that the only thing she could do, would be to lower the monthly payment to $50 per month for three months, allowing the interest and late penalties to continue accruing. I advised her that I did not wish to do that. I want to continue paying the $200 amount as I have been since May 2011. The only thing that she would do is document the account.

I advised AES that my son and I will no longer accept calls from AES, and that if they actually attempted a block party, involving outside parties into this issue. I will sue. I suggested that there isn't a judge out there, who wouldn't look favorably to our situation, being that we have been paying $200 per month since July, in good faith effort to pay the loan.

My experience, as well as my co-signers, with AES has been nothing short of bullying and harassment. On several occasions, we have been harassed to the point of taking our phones off the hook or we have debated on changing our phone numbers altogether. My co-signer went bankrupt in 2010, and the hope of finding a decent paying job out of college seems dim at times. As a result, I do not make much money and I am late on my student loan bills about half the time. And when I am late, the calls do not stop, no matter how many times I talk to them and let them know when payment will be made.

This is an everyday occurrence and happens several times a day. They not only harass us, but our employers have received phone calls from them as well, which is unacceptable, especially when these phone calls occur right after you get off the phone with a representative of AES. Again, no matter how many times we have talked to them and acknowledge our debt and intent to pay, they have harassed and annoyed every number associated with my account.

On one occurrence, AES bombarded my co-signer and I with rude phone calls saying we were delinquent and threatened a negative hit on our credit reports. I have been late on my payments before, but could not understand the relentless harassment this month. I found that this month's annoyance and bullying was due to AES not applying my payment evenly to all my loans, and one was "delinquent" by about ten dollars. I paid the extra ten dollars to get them to leave us alone.

On another occasion, when my student loan account was current, my cell phone got shut off temporarily due to simply me being broke and paying other bills with my money instead of my phone bill. AES wanted to harass and annoy me during this time, apparently, because a piece of my mail got returned, and when they could not get through to my cell phone, they called my co-signer to harass and annoy her. My mother, who is my co-signer, told them she had no other way of getting a hold of me, the address on my mail was correct, and that it was temporary shut off. But they called her 4 to 7 times a day until my phone was put back on, and called my references as well.

Today, my mother’s house was called seven times by AES. I called them this morning to make sure they had received the paperwork I had sent over a week ago for forbearance. The man was rude, just like most of the customer service agents I talk to over there, and said that, "They had not approved or denied the forbearance" and "They are contracted to call as many times as they want." I don't know how this is possible when the law lists repeated phone calls from a "regulated person" within the company as a form of harassment. After that phone call, which was at 9:00 in the morning, we received seven more phone calls from them until 9:00 at night.

The collection and loaning practices of AES needs to be investigated. This is clearly harassment and the stress these people cause my co-signer and I is harsh and unnecessary. I have read many complaints on AES, and I know they have several complaints not only to Consumer Affairs, but also to the BBB. Some of these complaints frighten me on the legality of my own loan, with many people reporting fraudulent interest rates and practices when AES takes over their student loans. When I can get on my feet again, I will contact a lawyer on the behavior of this company and the circumstance of my loan.

AES has poor customer service. Their representatives do not try to help towards a solution. I have called this company several times wherein I have received rude and unprofessional service.

I will list just 2 recent phone calls. I am a co-signer on an account and was trying to obtain information on how to get my name removed from the loan. I was told that I could not because the original loan payment had been adjusted (the monthly payment was reduced). I advised that I was not aware of this. They told me the borrower did not need my permission or signature to get the payment reduced. I asked how and was told that they just don't and my name would not be removed. The representative went on to say that removing my name is actually a courtesy, not just given. The tone was very sarcastic, as if I was a delinquent for even signing for a loan.

I called another time, a week later, to inquire why the payment I mailed was not applied to the account, even though my bank showed the payment had posted. I was told that they didn't have the payment initially but then, they "researched" and found out that they didn't know what account to apply it to. What? I listed the account number on the check. I informed the representative that the reason I mailed a check was because a co-signer cannot make an online or automated payment. She made a smart comment that they could. I explained that I had just got off the phone with the online technical help and he verified that I could not. She didn't apologize, just continued to make rude comments.

I take my debts and bills very seriously and this company has a problem with how they handle business. They will call and harass you when the borrower misses a payment but then you can't make one as a co-signer, unless you talk to a live person M-F. They will threaten you that your credit will be affected but let the borrower make decision without your knowledge on the account.

I really wish something could be done with the way they treat customers and handle business. I understand rules and regulation govern any company/business but there is a way to speak with people. If customer service is your job, you should learn how to talk to the public.

I was never told anything in regards to being late on a payment. I feel like the vehicle is a lemon and they falsely repossessed my vehicle with false and misleading information. I have never once been told that there were "no grace periods and no extensions with the underwriting or servicing department".

Bernice made a statement that my vehicle was secured for having no insurance. The vehicle was picked up on Sunday and my insurance was canceled on Monday night. I was told that the reason was that I was five days late and it should have been picked up on the first time that I was one day late. During the time that this company claimed that they made attempts to reach me, I was away due to a death and I was unable to get back with them or come in to make the payment that was due at that time. I feel like as though they are very unprofessional with the way they talk and respond to a customer, and I'm feeling as though they took it this far because of being five days late for one payment, and now, they are charging me $800 to get the vehicle back.

I also have been without this vehicle, which they would like me to pay for, going on a week. I always took making my payments very seriously that it has taken me almost five months to be five days late with this company, and not one time did they give me a chance to come in with the payment. If I would have known what I know now about this company, I would have never agreed to go with them. I am very unhappy with Xpress Finance. At this point, I am seeking to clear this vehicle completely out of my name.

Since August of 2007, I have been sending postal mail stating that I am not the co-signer of certain student loan. I happened to find out the co-signing fraud when I spoke to Burt, disbursement and distribution rep, when I requested that "stop payment" on a check that was issued. We confirmed the check had not been cashed. I faxed the request for American Education Service (AES) to stop payment immediately and not approve any student loans in the future. I asked that all checks or any other loans be stopped now. I stated again, I did co-sign for one student loan for Wilie **. I did not sign any other student loans for this student, and certainly not for a Tamika ** and will not do so.

I was told my Mr. Burt that the check would be stopped. I received confirmation via phone call and I have fax confirmation. About a month or so later, American Education Services sent postal letter confirmation that an investigation was being done. I have received no more information and not other correspondence from them. I did annual credit check in October of 2007-2010. Listed are student loans with me as co-signer in the amount of $178 k. My credit is a mess and I cannot get mortgage. The reply is that "my debt ratio is greater than my income”. Prior to this co-signing fraud, my credit was 650-700, a good rating.

I am requesting assistance from Consumer Affairs to help me correct this fraud. I have written to American Education Service ever since I was informed that there would be an investigation to get an update. But I got no response. I have also complained to Grambling State University via phone conversation, as it's the university that the college students are attending. And the financial student aide submitted or helped with application for funds. I asked Grambling State University student financial aide rep how could one student get more than 7 loans in one year. And I asked American Education Service rep Mr. Burt the very same question. Each stated that this could not happen and if so, there would certainly be an investigation. This may be true, but no one has done so thus far.

Grambling State University finance (student loans) representative referred me back to American Education Service, the distribution provider. They could not discuss a student's loan with me. This was repeated several times, as I stated I was the person being defrauded as co-signer. I again wrote to American Education, giving them this information. Still, I got no response at all. Yet, I still get this delinquent bills and letters from collection agencies. I explained that these bills are not mine as I did not co-sign for them. No one is listening. And I am still getting these bills with me as co-signer.

Calls from American Education Services and collection agencies are not going out to my sister Carol in Camden, NJ regarding Tamika ** and Laura ** (me). She called me. I told her to tell them to call me. I also told her to call Do Not Call (I gave her the 800 number). I told her to just follow the instructions given and then give them the name of company/institution calling and their phone number. Today, Saturday January 29, 2011, I received another such bill for Willie **.

I have called him (Willie **). He responded with a very dirty and negative e-mail. I then called his mother (my sister). And she responded with Willie owes me an apology and they would handle it as it was some kind of mix up that was over 2 years now. I have e-mails saved of me asking my sister and her son to correct this mess. I also told them that signing someone else's name is a federal offense. I do not know where else to turn. I e-mailed the FBI on the fraud hotline and gave the same information I am submitting to you. I have not received a response. I guess they think I am some kind of nut. I just do not know how, who, or where to turn for assistance. I now submit my request to ConsumersAffairs.com for help.

I had noticed that my balance owed never seems to go down and inquired about this in the past. I received a "song and dance" and will admit I believe them at the time. Something about how it starts off slow due to interest owed but will increase in chipping away on the principle soon etc.

She would not remove any late fees or penalties. I saw my balance increasing while I was making regular payments. I now believe you are doing this on purpose and violating my trust. Any relationship that existed with you has been made null and void by you.

The following is what you have been doing to me. First, you sent me a bill with the balance that I supposedly owed. It stated the amount due as $75.06. Second. I paid $75.06. Third, my next bill stated I only paid $30.97 and was delinquent. Fourth, I called your office and talked to Betty. She said that the rest was divided among my son’s loans which were also delinquent. What! He had just renewed his forbearance and had the letter you sent that confirmed this. Fifth, I also mailed you a letter stating that I have zero confidence that you are capable of managing my account. I said that I would make no more payments until you corrected my account and you refused to correct it. Sixth, instead, you chose to put me in collection and never corrected my account.

At this point, an audit of my account is required and a written account to me is required. I believe someone in your employ is stealing money from you at my and many others’ expenses including your expenses to attempt to collect what was an account in good standing. Seventh, it is now impossible to send you a payment because you do not apply it to my account. I do not trust you because you have done this to me repeatedly. Eighth, there became no reason for me to try to make payments when you were not applying my payments to my account.

An internet search shows 1,130,000 complaints against your company so I know I am not the only one you are doing this to. I am retired and travel full time. When I first called Xpress Loan servicing to inquire about student loan consolidation, I spoke with a representative who was adamant that I needed to sign up immediately because the federal interest rates on student loans were due to increase at any moment. This was in 2007. The interest rates have not changed a bit since then. He was very pushy and assured me that it would be at least six months for all of the paperwork to go through before I would actually have to start making payments. Being a very young graduate and naive, I thought he was trying to help me and agreed to move forward. Although this is not my major concern at this time, I believe it's important for you to have the full history of my concern in order to understand the veracity of my complaint.

I told the rep that I was uncomfortable with moving forward, however, he talked me into it anyhow, convincing me it was the best decision. After the paperwork went through, my payments were due within 30 days of the call I made. So, the six months I was supposed to have for repayment never happened. I called back and talked with a customer service rep to explain that I didn't feel comfortable with my loan terms, that I had been pressured into doing something I wasn't ready for and that I felt like I had been taken advantage of. The rep, at the time, seemed very empathetic. Yet, it was still never explained to me that I was on a repayment plan that paid interest only or that there was another option on my loans.

Thanks to the lovely AIG fallout, I was laid off of my job in 2008 due to a trickle-down effect. I called back several times while I was laid off from my job and spoke with reps about my plans to repay, how much I could pay and when, and I always kept my end of the bargain. Of all the times I have called Xpress Loan Servicing, no one has ever mentioned that I was on a level 2 repayment plan and that the money I was paying would have no benefit to my principal loan whatsoever.

Two weeks ago (May 20th), I called to speak with a customer service rep because I didn't understand some of the correspondence I had received. For the first time, a representative explained to me that I was paying interest only. I was extremely upset. She promised me that she would speak with her supervisor and that I would receive a call back from her supervisor the next day. I gave her my new cell phone number. It is now June 1st and I have still not received a call back from this supervisor who was promised to correspond with me by May 21st. I have made attempts to call back and email, still receiving no way to reach a supervisor.

So, as it sits, my loan is still a level 2 (not sure what that means still) and my payments are doing me no good. So, of the thousands of dollars that I have given to to XL Servicing, none of it has applied to my loans, leaving me in more debt now than when I started. I feel that they have stolen from me. I know this is not a personal thing, but from my perspective, it feels very personal especially now that I'm being completely ignored. Don't let this happen to you! Shop around and have the companies explain your options. Do not let anyone pressure you into making a rush decision. May you learn from my mistake and never use Xpress Loan Servicing! Issue is still unresolved!

XLS allowed principal payments on my unsubsidized for two years to my surprise as I was told this several times over the phone. I paid all but 1k of the unsubsidized down (while on auto payments for monthly charge as normal). They even had it on their website to allow this for awhile before they took it out. I called in to pay the rest off as I'm entering medical school this fall and they said I couldn't. I was never notified of the change. I think they wanted to cover up their mistake and now they have transferred $5k from my sub into my unsubsidized portion!

I have been paying $330 on my loan steady for going on three years and the total balance due has not reduced. It seems like I'm just paying their interest and will never pay off the loan. Is this illegal? What can I do about this? I've tried to contact Xpress Loans and nothing just like the others on here. What options are available?

I signed up to consolidate my student loans about 2 years ago. Their first mistake was forgetting to include one of my loans, something I did not know until I received a letter from the bank telling me I had not made a payment in 3 months. That is when I began to experience the horrible customer service that never fails with this company.

The worst part is my loan amount has now almost doubled due to their constant adding of interest. My monthly payments are so high, I have yet to begin paying and they are not doing anything to help me with this. I offered to pay the most I could each month and they wouldn't take that, instead, again deferred my loan. At which point, they continue to add massive amounts of interest. I don't know how I will ever be able to pay this loan. I constantly worry about the interest I continue to accrue and can't do anything about it. I constantly wonder if this is all a fraud.

On November 20, 2009, I applied to have my loan payment reduced by completing forms for the Income-Based Repayment Plan. I have contacted the customer service dept twice to find out how long before I'll receive an answer. On Nov. 23rd, I was told it takes 5-7 days. On Dec. 8th, I was told 5-7 days as well. I asked to speak with a manager and was transferred to a voicemail of someone named Sally. I left a message around 3:00PM and as of Dec. 10th, I have not received a call. I was told that I could not speak to anyone in the loan servicing dept. On Dec. 8th, I also sent an email concerning this situation to their customer service. On Dec. 8th, I received back that they needed my account number. I did email them back. Still no response.

I have been corresponding with Xpress Loan Servicing’s customer service because I cannot get a real person on the telephone. I am a California State employee and due to three days work furlough a month, I am required to take my salary that has dropped by 15%. I was trying to lower my loan payment or see if I qualified for student loan forgiveness because I have been a state worker for 20 years. I found out that my monthly loan payments are paid up through February 2010. I asked, since I am paid through February of 2010, if I can pay monthly payments through February 2010 and have those payments applied to my principle. Xpress Loan Servicing said that I cannot pay towards principle because I have to pay on the interest before I can pay towards the loan principle. I believe this to be illegal, but I don't know. Can you please help? I have pasted below all the email correspondence that I have received with customer service. Thank you.

Xpress Loan Servicing has been a dishonest and greedy company with awful customer service. They miscalculate my payments, and claim I missed a payment that I actually paid which led to being disqualified for a rate reduction. They misappropriate my payments between my two loans despite frequent calls to customer service to fix the problem. I also learned that the company had a glitch in their system leading to miscalculations of interest due on customers' loans. I was not notified of this problem and the company has neglected to fix the problem and forfit the unnecessary interest this "glitch" added to my account.

This is a company that has two of my student loans. I've always made my payments online (not by check) since December 2007. My bank information is stored on their website. All I have to do is select my bank account when I'm paying my monthly loan installment. My bank account has been active every day since 1998.
I missed a payment in July 2008 aka I was 1 month late. I make a payment in August 2008 for the current month + the previous missed month using my bank account as I always do. I recieve a confirmation email as I always do. When I sign onto the website i September 2008 to make a payment, it shows that I haven't made a payment in 2 months (July + August). But I did. I made a payment in August for both August and July payments. I don't understand what happened but I make a payment for the total of whatever it says needs to be paid (3 months worth) and get a confirmation email. I was only actually late for 1 month but for some reason, the website has been rejecting my payments without sending me any emails stating so. They had only sent me payment confirmation emails. But since it was so weird that I had to pay 3 month's worth when I had made a payment in the previous month, I kept on checking the website. Even though I would receive confirmation emails, it wouldn't show that the payment went through on the website. So I just kept on making payments. I eventually deleted the bank profile stored on the website and created a new profile using the same bank account. The old bank profile has worked flawlessly from 12/07-06/08 but after I missed one month's payment, it stopped working. I had no idea that it was no longer being accepted and I have no idea why. It definitely was not because of me. There's no reason it should have stopped working because like I stated earlier, my bank account has been active every day since it was open back in 1998. It was an error on the Xpress Loan Servicing and/or their website. At the end of all this, they reported to credit agencies that I was 60 days delinquent. I have 2 loans with them that I make one payment for, so they gave me 2 delinquencies. I was making payments on time!!!!!! I only missed 1 month and do not deserve 60 days delinquent marks on my credit report! I have payment confirmation emails to prove it!!!

I earnestly believe that they are miscalculating interest payments. If you add up the interest I paid in 2008 it exceeds the 5.25% I am suppose to be paying.

Xpress Loan Servicing (XLS), A CIT Company, is the sister company of Student Lending/Loans Xpress (SLX), A CIT Company , also known as/formerly known as Student Lending Services (SLS) (the parent company of Dell Financial Services).

Initially, I had consolidated my loans with a company in Florida for a really low locked in interest rate <4%, which was then sold to the predecessor of SLS, which became SLX when CIT Bank bought the company over circa 2005/2006. That loan, was being serviced the servicing company which became XLS, and was a subsidized Stafford, previously consolidated.

I had attended Univeristy of Pheonix Online and had 2 Stafford Loans (one subsidized, the othe unsubsidized) with College Loan Corp in CA, being serviced by ACS Education Services. We had received a letter in the mail saying that SLX had an offer that would consolidate loans and give up to 3% rebate. I called to see if I was qualified, thinking I already have one loan with them, it would be easy to have all the loans together. I qualified for the promotion, and was told I would receive a 2% rebate check, ~$820+ within 60 days of completingmy second payment. I completed the electronic application I received and within 2-3 weeks I received a letter that my loans were funded and disbusred, and received the new terms and payment amounts. This was November 2006.

Previously in Sept 2006, I had received a ltter that XLS just realized by reviewng the updated NSLDS database information that I was no onger taking classes and that my interest payments were due immediately for September. I had less then 10 days between the date the letter was produced and the payment was due, and when I complained, I was told they school didn't notify us oh well, pay or be late, or pay by phone for a small fee. A few days latter,I received the bill for October. I would then be billed for Nov 6th. Meanwhile, the subsudized loan interest through their realizing they never updated their records, was paid for by the government.

The new consolidated loan had the total subsidized loan portiona nd the unsusidized portion, with a total amount due begining Nov 25th. On Nov 13th, I had submitted the request for automaitc debit each month to receive the 0.25% interest reduction, thinking it would reduce my interest payment and pay m loan off ever so slimly and slightly faster, in addition to paying more than the minimum due each month. The first week i December I received the confirmation for auto-debit to begin with my Dec 25th payment for the monthly amount ~141.

I received a letter a few days before my Dec 25th payment that my loan was re-calculated and my new due date would be the 6th of the month, with payments begining Jan 6th, 2007. On Dec 22nd I receive a letter stating my auto debit was changed to the new payment amount and would be taking place begining Jan 6th 2007.

On Dec 26th, 2006, my bank account was debited for the amount of the old monthly payment amount. I called my bank a few days later after taking to XLS to try an rectify why they sent mey the letter and my payments were changed with no avail and so many different stories I talked to my bank and they said the auto debit was also to take place on Jan 6th, and that my only option was to contest on the debits as unauthorized. I filled out the affidavit and sent in copies of the letters and bank statements and communications, and communicationd from XLS, (nearly 20 pages) and the bank reversed the Dec 25th payment. XLS then started demanding the money right away and threatenng to report me to the credit agecies as defaulted because I had missed my payment. They also wanted the monthly payment of 117 and change instead of the original 141 and change, even though monthly interest was 138, because I was paid ahead by paying extra each month previously. They tacked on the 117 to my March statement and sent me a letter saying they were going to withdraw nearly $400 from my account to cover the March payment and the past due February payment of 117.

The rep I talked to told me they would deduct more than my monthly payment, especially because I had checked off and signed off that they could only debit the exact amont of the monthly installment payment indicated in the disbursement- no more no less. Since their letter indicated otherwise, I e-mailed and mailed copies of requests to stop the auto debit for the future and starting sending checks each month.

At the end of March, my loan was sold to SLMA Corporation (dba SallieMae), Bank of New York Trust from SLX/Fifth Third Bank (EFT). XLS continued to state I was late, never paid me my rebate, and finally I contacted the US Dept of Education Ombudsmans Office, NJ AG, SLMA, and the Guarantor. The Guarantor's letter was retrned by the Post Office- mved unable to forward- and I used the address listed by the US Dept of Ed. The Dept of Ed got back to me and settled several issues, some unstatisfoactorally, many I finally hashed ut myself with XLS, I think only because they knew they Dept of Ed was involved and it was noted in my file.

Towards the tail end, THe NJ AG/Division of Banking and Insurance was involved but as they told me they can only try to mediate since they don't regulate Student Lenders. XLS feed the state and feds garbage because they went right back to the same tricks weeks after the cases were closed.

SLMA contacted myself and the called the state back.. They told me they had no recordof purchasing my loans, though I sent them copies of the letter and read them pieces of junk mail and spam I get everyday. They told me that I needed to call XLS and get the check number and amount that was used to pay my loans and call the back, then, they could get involved in looking into the problems with XLS. The state said the person she spoke to at SLMA said they didn't hold my loans currently, but did in the past, and had no idea what I was talking about, they trusted the resolution that XLS had said, that I didn't understand the Student Loan process and repayment process, and other issues were resolved, and all cases were closed.

In August 2007, I received a letter that my loans were re-calculated and my next payjent was going t be due Oct 6th 2007. I called XLS to see why my loans were re-calculated- they said their computers go through periodically to ensre all payments are lower throughout the length of the loan. I didn't believe that, especially since under the Higher Education Act, loans can only be recalculated and payment dates changed if 1) a new loan was consolidated; 2) a forebearance took place as requested by the borrower or by an administrative forebearance; 3) the borrower requested a change i the payment plan/type; 4) the borrower requested a new payment due date. I was removed from the pay ahead status and was told that I would receive a bill for partial interest from July 27-Aug 7th prior to the re-calculation, and that would be due Sept 6 2007 and that would be my last paid ahead stament period.

My Sept statement said the interest was $64 and chage, but the coupon said amount due $14.97. Knowing their games, I called XLS and they said that bill was in paid ahead, I had the option of paying only $14.97 or the $64. I paid the $14.97. I started getting the letters in the mail saying I was past due on my my payments,, when I called XLS they told me I was still obligated for back interest, there were fees from Dec 2006, penalties and interest from June 2006, then another time I was told they didn't get my July 2007 payment.

And so the drama starts again. SLMA has no record of me except the vast spam and junk mail I get. If I switch to another company, I a subject to the new interest rates and will shoot from the 4.00% to near 6.5%. I can try calling the Dept of Ed back and seeing if they can help, but they got pushed over last time.

Since the issues began with the Dec 2006 payment, they tacked on the ~$86 in back interest that was outstaning in June 2007 when they applied a forebearance against my wishes and was later approved and denied, to clear the the back interest. The late fes that had accumulated were supposedly removed by the individual who dealt with the Dept of Ed, late fees and interest have been adding since Sept 2007 since they report I have failed to pay the entire amount due. The recalculation has my payments lasting to Oct 3031, I oy saved pennies each month, under the previous I would have been paid off by sending in a mere $10 extra a month, at least 6-10 months early.

Now, they keep recalculating and adding fees to extend the time to the very end. I als believe by recalculating they will increase the amount of interest paid overall- at least ~$2000 more, if it doesn't get recalculated again. I also noticed that prior to my complaint to the Dept of Ed, the balances were not correct on my account, by some miracle after I complained to the Dept of Ed, the principle suddenly decreased. I would make higher payments and it would indicate $80 towards principle, but nothing would come off the balance, I was told it was paid ahead towards the next months interest, which would lower the interst requirement, but the next month the took the full interest amount, and littile to no principle came off the balanace. after I complained tis seemed to be rectifyed, but now I have to check since they say I owe interest. Since they calculate monthly interest using the avg daily balance like a credit card, it is to their advantage not to credit the balance properly. To date, they refuse to respond t wiriting, email, etc on this issue Instead they keep sending late notices. In January, they sent me an email saying they didn't receive my payment on time, however, they had cashed my check 10 days earlier. I replied back, and they told me they didn't have they information to review my account.
