1040.com is an online tax service company that is 100% U.S.-based and run by a team that has been in the tax field for over 40 years. It charges a $25 flat fee for any federal return, with no extra fees for a state return. The site is easy to navigate and offers helpful resources, such as tax calculators, refund trackers and a comprehensive tax guide.

Pros
  • Flat fee
  • 100% accuracy guarantee
Cons
  • No one-on-one pro help
  • Audit support costs extra

What is 1040.com?

1040.com is an online tax service that offers a user-friendly interface for filing both federal and state income tax returns. The flat-fee structure of 1040.com eliminates the confusion of which tax package to use, since all filers pay the same $25 price. The platform supports most federal and state tax forms, including Form 8949, which is used to report capital assets, including cryptocurrency investments.

The company also offers chat and email support, but there is no phone support available or the option to upgrade to one-on-one assistance with a tax expert.

In addition to tax preparation and filing services, 1040.com also offers a range of tax calculators and tools to help you estimate your tax liability, including a tax bracket calculator, a self-employment tax calculator and a capital gains tax calculator.

How does 1040.com work?

Using 1040.com is simply a matter of signing up and starting. The guided questionnaire will help you include everything you need on your tax return. Based on the answers you provide, the platform will automatically find the tax credits and deductions you qualify for. Or, if you are a tax pro, you can bypass the questions and jump directly to the forms you need.

The platform is free to use until you submit your tax documents at the end, at which point you’ll need to pay the $25 fee.

1040.com also offers W-2 import for over 1 million employers, so there is a possibility you can pull your W-2 information automatically. Additionally, if you are a repeat 1040.com customer, your previous tax return remains in its system and is easy to import and edit for the new tax year.

1040.com coverage

The simplified offerings of 1040.com make it easy to navigate for both new and experienced tax filers. Its flat-rate fee comes with the following guarantees:

  • One price guarantee: You’ll never be charged more than $25 to submit your federal and state taxes.
  • Easy-to-use guarantee: You are not charged until the end, so you can discontinue use at any moment and never pay a bill.
  • 100% accuracy guarantee: If you have to pay a federal or state tax penalty because of an error made by 1040.com, the company will reimburse you that penalty fee.
  • Max refund guarantee: If an online service can get you a higher tax refund than 1040.com, it will refund you the $25. However, it will not refund you any additional fees paid toward e-Collect or Audit Assistance.

1040.com cost

1040.com does not offer pricing tiers like other tax software. Instead, it charges a flat-rate fee of $25 for both federal and state files at the time of publishing. No matter which form or credits or deductions you have, you pay the $25 rate.

If you wish to pay the fee with your refund, it is an additional $24.95 charge. You can also add on the optional Audit Assistance, which is a third-party service offering resolution specialists, for an additional $29.95.

Do we recommend 1040.com?

1040.com is a helpful tax software platform because of its simple price and walk-through questionnaire. However, if you have complicated taxes and need the assistance of a professional tax expert, we recommend going with another service. 1040.com is a legitimate business that has processed over 150 million tax returns in the last 10 years through its online platform and professional products.

The program decided on its own that my wife is a deceased, nonresident alien, which she is neither. All efforts of mine and communication with AI helper and live chat proved futile. Can't complete the return, but they now have all our personal data.

I used the free file from 1040.com as the IRS recommended them as a trusted resource. I qualified for the service first of all. It was easy and the software is user friendly. It guides you through everything. I would recommend for those who qualify for free file.

Completed tax return will not download. The AI help just keeps repeating trying the same steps. I emailed customer support with a detailed description of my problem and when they answered back they asked what my problem was (even though I explained in detail). They have still not returned my 2nd email and there is no number to call for support. I am using the paid version, not the free version through the IRS
