Launched model that suffered blu-ray lens failure. Then a few months after that, the infamous - but according to Sony, - infrequent yellow light of death. A complete cover-up by the Sony corporation hoping that consumers will do nothing other than post on web sites. Do not just give Sony more cash, the whole affair is a disgrace. Avoid Sony, spend your money with a reputable manufacturer who respects their customers and the loyalty we typically offer. With any luck, their name will be damaged so badly that any savvy customer will refuse to do business with them. We need a class action.
Consumer Complaints & Reviews
A class-action lawsuit in California charges that the Sony has misrepresented the PlayStation 2 by claiming that it also plays DVDs. The suit charges that many units stop reading DVDs after only a few months of use. Gee, that sounds just like what our readers have been saying. By the way, the problems with Playstation 2 aren't all that new. Playstation 1 wasn't exactly perfect either.

My complaint is in regards to the PlayStation 3 gaming console. This console produced from November 2006 to the present has a fundamental flaw that has left many consumers, including myself, with a $600 paperweight.
Sony's defective product suffers from what the gaming community has dubbed the 'yellow light of death' or YLOD for short. More specifically this is a problem of overheating caused not by the consumer, but by the use of low quality thermal paste and solder with an insufficient melting point. The system overheats and the solder that connects the processing unit and graphics unit to the mother.**. Due to the nature of the problem, the outcome will not effect every unit, but looms as a possibility for every PlayStation 3 owner.
While the percentage of PlayStation 3s effected is lower, Sony has made over $50 million dollars on defective systems and caused over an estimated 100,000 PS3 owners to buy new systems or repair the broken unit.
Beyond this factory defect, Sony has failed to recognize the issue and continues to charge owners a $150 fee to fix the system or replace it with a refurbished model. In most of the cases that I am familiar with, the 'fixed' system never lasts more than a few months. This is an abuse that consumers will not accept.

In this, I will attempt to show Sony PlayStation has falsely advertised their game Kill Zone 3. First the company claims this game to be the best shooter game for the PS3. They claimed to have a beta test code for Socom3 located inside the game. The game indeed is not the best PS3 shooter as it has inherent problems with the network code. It takes up to 30 minutes to get a game going to play it. While in the game play sometimes the game will just lock up turning the whole TV screen black forcing you to turn your PS3 system off in order to be able to go through the menus.
The Soco Beta code did not work. After contact made to PlayStation network they indicated that the Beta was not released yet. While they have no date of the release of the Beta, the Alfa of the game will be available in less than a month per promoters indications. The PlayStation company has refused to disclose information in writing on the Beta code they released with their game. As this was a promotion to get more people to buy the Kill Zone 3 game I believe this is a direct violation and is indicative of false advertising and should be addressed.
I also believe that they would not have sold as many games if they had informed the consumer that there would be a 30 min wait in order to play the Kill Zone 3 network game nor would they have sold as many games if they had disclosed information that the game would lock your system up while your were playing the game. PlayStation has refused to honor any type of credit for this game stating that the game was purchased from a retail store. The retail store has stated they refused to give a full credit based on this false advertisement. I would like to know what my options are for taking on this big corporate giant and whether I have a legal claim.

I bought PS3 60GB in February 2007. The machine died in September 2008. I sent it to Sony for repair for $150, and the machine was received end of September 2008 and it worked fine. I was deployed for one year 2009-2010, meaning, the machine was used minimally. This morning, December 31, 2010, the machine died again with the same issues.
I contacted the Sony Customer Service and received the standard lines--the machine is old etc., etc. Then the only two options I was given was to repair the old one for $129 + tax or receive a newer "Factory Recertified" one for $100 but only comes with a 90-day warranty.
I would not be that upset if the machine had just died today after almost four years. It is the fact that I had it fixed for the same issue already, which leads me to believe that there is a flaw in the machine. Also, the options I was given were not great. I asked for a rebate coupon towards the purchase of a new one. (They come with a 1-year warranty). "No," I was told, "We don't do that." Sony's attitude toward its customers is abhorrent. No customer support rep I talked to--there were three--seemed to be helpful. Thanks for listening.

After purchasing a PS3, it worked perfectly throughout the warranty period. Shortly afterwards, the blu-ray laser broke and I had to pay $100 to get this problem fixed which takes the total paid to $400 for the console. Now, less than 12 months later, the machine has shown a yellow light and will not function at all. Surely, failure under the Sale of Goods Act, as I am offered no options other than to buy another one.

I purchase a PSP series 3001 in March 2009. After owning it for over a year and a half, the WLAN button no longer functions. I contacted Sony Corp in California on 10-26-10 and spoke with a Holly and explained my situation. She informed me because the warranty has expired, I'll have to pay close to $90 to have it repaired.
I told her that unacceptable and informed her that I have purchased numerous Sony products over the years including televisions, computers and just last December, a PS3. She continues to stand her ground and refused to offer to have my PSP repaired at no cost considering I've been a loyal customer. I can go to GameStop and spend just $10 more dollars and buy a refurbished PSP and for $5 more can get a warranty for 1 year.
I informed her that she has lost me as a customer for life but that didn't seem to faze her at all. I asked to speak with upper management and she claimed she was upper management which was clearly not the case. I spoke with someone who claimed she was her boss and she refused to help me. Sony is gaining a reputation of selling bad products that become defective after the warranty has expired, usually within 3-6 months after the warranty has expired.

I am a consumer and a big fan of Playstation. I have bought many Playstation products throughout the years (multiple PS1, PS2, PS3, and the many games and accessories that go along with them). I have recently become very disappointed with my PS3 which has now displayed the YLOD.
This is a major problem for many people have had this and Sony still insists it's not a design or hardware malfunction. They want me to pay $170.00 dollars plus tax and shipping and handling to repair this problem. One thing though, a friend of mine had this happen a few months ago, agreed to pay and sent his machine in only to get a different refurbished machine. He lost everything he had saved on his old machine. Just wanting to put my story and opinion in. I will not be purchasing anything from Sony in the future and I suggest that everyone else do the same. If we as consumers continue to let them take advantage of us, then they will. Our money and their pockets are the only thing they are concerned about.

PS3 Hardware Failure. PS3 Yellow Light, does not start and only had for 2 1/2 years. Yellow Light is a hardware related failure and Sony offers repair for an additional fee that is too high. Spend over $400.00 for a product that didn't last long, spend money on games and Blu-ray movies that now I can't use. In order to fix it, Sony charge a $150.00 extra fee and only gives 90 days warranty. Repair fee too high, warranty too low.

Okay, I was playing my PlayStation 3 (out of warranty at this point). One day it started to overheat and would freeze with strange static-color changing blocks and lines. I took it to a repair store where they took it for a few days. They called me and told me they opened, and examined it and told me to pick it up and come back for a refund because they could fix it. It had something to do with thermal gel and it came that way out of the factory. The only way to fix it is to send it to be serviced by the SCEA. I called 2 times when the waiting periods were over 12 minutes, only to be hung up on immediately after connection.
I finally got a hold of someone and we did the troubleshooting. No results. So he e-mails me steps of additional troubleshooting. After they all failed, I called again. There was another over 12-minute waiting period, again, only to get someone who was distracted which made communication a chore. To top it off, the guy hangs up in the middle of the call. So I call again. This time with a 3-minute waiting period and the woman had me do all (including the optional ones to do on my own) troubleshooting steps again and again—no results.
So she tells me I need to pay 149$ plus tax to get my PS3 fixed for what is to my knowledge a factory defect. For this price, I could buy one from a friend! So I try to forget about it to enjoy what I have, only to find that my PS3 had started to have drive malfunctions, which I suspect are due to the troubleshooting. My PS3 is now more damaged with a malfunctioning drive.

My complaint is in regards to the Playstation 3 gaming console that I purchased new December 14, 2007 from Amazon.com for $512.96. It is the 80GB model and the serial number is CE929945826-CECHE01. The unit broke on September 15, 2010. This console produced from November 2006 to the present has a fundamental flaw that has left many consumers, including myself, with an expensive, inoperable unit. Sony's defective product suffers from what the gaming community has dubbed the 'yellow light of death' or YLOD for short.
More specifically this is a problem of overheating caused not by the consumer, but by the use of low quality thermal paste and solder with an insufficient melting point. The system overheats and the solder that connects the processing unit and graphics unit to the mother board melts and/or breaks. Due to the nature of the problem, the outcome will not affect every unit, but looms as a possibility for every Playstation 3 owner.
I contacted Sony about my broken Playstation system and the only solution they offered was to charge me a $150 fee to fix the system plus $20 to cover shipping charges. Only a 3 month warranty comes with this repair. This is not a solution since the repaired system may not last much longer than several months. A unit of this expense should last longer than what mine did. I've had a similar situation with a Sony TV that had a defect also. I was offered a new TV at a reduced price which I accepted; however, not before having to spend additional money on something that should have lasted much longer.
Sony has made a lot of money on these defective systems and is now causing a lot of PS3 owners to buy new systems or repair the broken unit. Sony has failed to recognize the issue. This is an abuse that consumers will not accept. I believe that Sony should offer their customers a fair deal of a replacement unit and replacement of the software that was bought and downloaded onto the defective PlayStation 3 units.

I sent my PlayStation 3 in for service to fix an issue with the hard drive that was causing my system to freeze up constantly. The system was returned to me, but upon starting it up, the system quickly froze up each time I started it. Not only that, but if it didn't freeze and I inserted a game, the system made several loud clanking sounds and threw up an error code 80010514, which apparently means the Blu-ray sensor is broke, which was not the case before I originally sent it in.
The issue could not have been resolved, the system must not have been tested, somehow a new problem was created out of thin air, and when I contacted Sony to send it back in, I was surprised to learn that they had no notes whatsoever and were unable to determine what service, if any, was done on the machine at all. Sony's policy is apparently such that any information pertaining to servicing and repairs does not exist for neither them nor myself to obtain. Literally, neither of us knows if anyone fixed my machine at all. The turnaround time was less than 24 hours from the time they received it (at their service center in Laredo, TX) to the time they boxed it and sent it back to me. I was less than a month away from my warranty expiring, which worried me into purchasing the extended 2-year warranty so I hope they will get it right.
They bill this system as a console that "only does everything" in their commercials. So, for me it means being without the heart of my home entertainment system for up to 3 weeks every time a warranty service repair is required. Without the extended warranty, however, I could have been stuck with a device that was not going to last much longer, prompting me to buy a new system.

I have a 40-gig PS3 purchased new in December 2007. For most of the time, this unit was not used, as I did not have an HD television. The unit was also stored in a box for a full year. After very little use, the disc drive has failed. The internet is full of stories of the same problem. Sony should extend the warranty for this product.
The $500.00 console is inoperable as marketed. Sony claims this to be an all inclusive entertainment system but not so much for me and thousands of others out there who have the same problem.

We purchased a Sony PlayStation 3 for my husband for Christmas in 2008. The machine stopped working a little over a year after the purchase and Sony required us to pay for the repair. The cost of this was $159.60. I sent the machine back in April of 2010 and received an "exchanged" system. The original unit I returned was beyond repair. Just the same as the first unit, we kept the unit in a fairly cool, room-temperature living room with nothing in proximity of 4" in each direction, nowhere near any other electronics, and vacuumed alongside the vents every weekend when I cleaned. Lo and behold! The replacement unit, now only 4 months later, is suffering from the "yellow light of death" again. After already paying $159.60, Sony says that the 90-day warranty they gave on the replacement unit is now expired. Four months of using the replacement machine and now they are asking me to pay another $159.60! What a scam and a rip off!

Purchased a PS3 for my son in February 2009. I had to send it back to Sony for repair in February 2010. Sony is now saying they have no record of a repair in February 2010. My son is out of a PS3 and I lost $500 on a purchase that only lasted a year.

To begin with, I have more than 4 of the play station 2 systems here in home and every time I notice my son is unable to get them to work. I find this ridiculous considering each one has been brand new. I believe that they are made to fail so that the child will pressure the parent to get to more expensive model.
I say this because I notice that the plug for the power cord seems loose on every one. I was frustrated when repeatedly seeing my child and other adult saying that you have to position the cord just right. Well no, that's not the way it should have to work or rather rarely work at all. I believe that it is deliberate factory defect to victimize consumers.
As for economic damage they are 200 00 dollars. To them that's cheap, it free money to them for being able to repeatedly sell a defective product not to mention very stressful seeing a disappointed child who just opened a new system out of the box from the manufacturer that he can't play because it is a defective product.

I brought a PS3 at Toys R Us on February 19, 2008. When it broke the first time, I was told by Toys R Us that I had to get it repaired by Sony which has a record of that on file because it was still covered under their 1 year warranty and theirs did not start until that one was over. Now they will not honor it because it ran out two years from the date of purchase. I just let Sony be aware of the problems and discussed that they should not let Toys R Us sell their products. My next step will be to go to our attorney general and let him know of this issue and Action News.

We have the PlayStation 3. Sony regularly sends out updates for the PS3 (PlayStation 3). Most recently we were notified to download the 3.41 software version that was available. In doing so and following their specific instructions, my machine will no longer work. I contacted their technical support group multiple times. All advice and attempts still brought me back to the PS3 still not working. It always says now the last install did not complete, shows 99% progress and freezes, recommending a reinstall again which it won't do.
I am writing this complaint after looking up the error code 8002F310 on Google (internet) and seeing that other consumers are having the exact same issue described in detail. I also found a YouTube video that demonstrated the same results. At the end of the day, my machine will no longer work specifically after attempting Sony's update. I completely understand warranty and the reasons companies have them.
My machine is approximately 18 months old and out of warranty. The issue is Sony has pushed out this update and will charge me $150 to repair. That also was what I expected to hear due to my research on the internet from other consumers prior to my calling for service. I think what is fair is for Sony to make these repairs at their expense and none of mine due to the problem starting only with their update. Honestly, it feels like since my machine is out of warranty they pushed out an update to get another $150 dollars out of me. I did speak with a supervisor already at their support line who said there is no other way to resolve beyond me sending them the machine and paying $150. When I explained the circumstances behind why I think this is unfair, he referred me to their terms and conditions which says Sony can push out updates and if it negatively affects you then you as the consumer are responsible. That to me is unfair consumer practice and I would respectfully request this complaint is reviewed and I should be provided with other alternatives to repair or replace my machine, at no expense to me for this specific issue.

I contacted the customer service department to inquire about an issue with my children's PlayStation 3 console. The customer service rep informed me that it was an overheating issue and was common. He asked if I kept the system in a well ventilated area and kept clean from dust. I answered that it was kept in a stationary position on top of an entertainment system in the open and cleaned off regularly. This is the third time in two years that this console has quit working and needed repairs. The customer service rep informed me that two years was a good amount of time to have not had any issues and I should be happy to pay the $150 USD for repairs or buy a new console so that I would have a longer warranty period.

Greetings, I purchased a 60GB model number CECHA01 Sony Play Station 3 in December 2007 which came with a one year warranty. It was purchased at a Best Buy in Traverse City, Michigan. It is now broken, and I understand that it has been 2 1/2 years and it's out of warranty but there are several individuals that are experiencing the same problems I am. Just going to the forums on the Sony Play Station site, you will find dozens of complaints from other consumers who experience the same problems with the Blu Ray Disc Drive no longer functioning essentially rendering the machine useless. If you just do some random Google search about the 60GB model or any of the three launch modes, you will find hundreds of cases of consumer complaints with either the Blu Ray Drive issue or what is called the yellow light of death which also renders the machine useless.
If you go on to eBay and search for PS3 60GB systems you will find approximately 300 products of which more than half are being sold broken. How can a $600 machine have such a high rate of failure in only a few short years. I contacted Sony Customer Service Department on Tuesday June 8, 2010 and spoke with several individuals. The first one walked me through some trouble shooting tactics in order to try and remedy the problem. However, it is very apparent the machine has failed. She offered to sell me a refurbished machine of the same model for $129.99 plus shipping but I had to give them my broken one or to fix mine for $149.99 plus shipping. I began to explain with a few days of research that I had uncovered hundreds of cases of the same issue and was amazed Sony wasn't doing anything about it. She assured me there is nothing wrong with the PS3s and less that 1% of them malfunctions.
Well, after doing some more digging online, I think the failure rate is much higher. Anyway, I kept requesting to speak to someone that represented the corporation. After a while, I spoke with a gentleman named Don with Corporate Customer Care. His company number was **** who admitted to reading some of the failure post on their own Sony Play Station 3 forums and continued to deny any problems with any Play Station model. He also repeated the same options originally given to me and said that is all Sony is willing to do. He repeated the one year warranty expired and there was nothing they were willing to do. I was absolutely amazed to say the least.
I could not believe that a corporate representative of Sony wasn't concerned in the least bit hearing about all the reported failures of their machines or that fact that I told him I would never purchase another Sony product. I'm currently pursuing all other avenues and trying to get an idea of how many people world wide have been affected by Sony's negligence. I told Sony that I would be compliant and pay the shipping cost and all I wanted was for them to fix what an occurring problem with their hardware is obviously. No luck! Thank you for your time and consideration.

I received a PlayStation 3 for my birthday on October 3 of 2008. Around Thanksgiving of 2009, the Blue Ray drive stop reading the discs (all of the discs). I called customer service and told "Neil" about the problem and asked for help to solve the problem and was told that I was going to be charged $150+ tax + shipping to repair it because it was out of warranty. I was flabbergasted because I rarely played and usually kept it clean on a daily basis.
I went online and checked for any "DIY" repairs and found out I wasn't the only one with the problem. Thousands of people had the same problem, and also were agitated that Sony were very negative towards fixing the problem. Now 2010, my other issue I have is that they removed the "other OS" feature!Once again flabbergasted.
We the consumers paid $500+ for the system and was advertised to have support for Linux for them to later on remove this! I'm looking for them to fix my system and stop them from trampling our consumer rights! I speak for me and all of my fellow consumers that bought this system over other competitive systems, claiming "it's a computer, not a gaming system".
My blue ray drive failed! Sony wants me to pay for the damages! I would understand if I had it for many years and played multiple hours on a daily basis, but I didn't! I only played one hour a day and didn't even watch movies on it to preserve the life of my investment! I frown upon Sony and demand justice for us that our American rights have been taken from us on our expense and fail to realize what's going, or just simply don't care.

An 80GB model PlayStation 3 was purchased for me as a Christmas gift during the month of December in 2007 and was first used on Christmas day that same year. The unit was stored, as directed, in a well-ventilated area. The unit was also dusted (as was the entertainment center it was stored in) regularly on a monthly basis. On June 12, 2010, I put a blu-ray movie disc into the unit and started the movie up. After a few minutes, the machine shut itself off. I called Sony's customer support number and was told that the unit would need to be repaired and that since the unit was out of its one year warranty, I would need to pay $150 for the repair.
I did nothing to cause the unit to malfunction and the company wants me to pay $150 to fix the problem that was caused by their defective design. The unit itself was a gift, which I believe cost $500. Sony is asking $150 to fix the unit. I purchased hardware and software for the unit costing roughly $750, which I can't use until the unit is repaired. The unit won't eject the blu-ray disc I had in it when it malfunctioned.

My Playstation 2 does not read the disc anymore and does not work. I'm unable to play my Playstation games I paid a lot of money for.

I went online with my ps3 slim to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. I was prompted to update my system which I did, whilst installing the update at about 12%, it stopped. Now when I try to play Call of Duty, it displays black screen on my TV. All other games seem to work but you must appreciate this is my favorite game.

I had first purchased as Playstation 3 console in the amount of $550 which gave me no problems what so ever. I had never used it as much and couple of months ago when I started to use it again; it had a faulty disk player which is ridiculous because I had not used it for that long. The cost to fix it would be $250 and would not guarantee me a well running product that is to why i purchased a newer playstation 3. After couple months of some slight usage, it breaks down the exact same way the first one did.
I contacted Sony customer service at 858-942-2230 where I spoke to a couple of reps who basically told me that the first playstation could not be fixed because it was a discontinued model and the newer one could only possibly be fixed if I sent them a copy of the receipt. I advised the reps that I did not have the receipt and wanted something done to compensate such bad consoles that I spent $1000. They reiterated information to me explaining nothing else could be done, I advised that I will be contacting the better business bureau and attorney general. The men were being very rude and did not seem like they wanted to help me at all. I have been a loyal consumer of these Sony products and have only got back poor service and product. I am asking for one of the consoles to be replaced and or fixed. There are many competitive companies who will offer to replace a model even if it is outdated. Sony does not need any more bad fame and am expecting something to be done in regards. I have spent over $1000 purchasing such poor product hoping one the latest would be much better!

My complaint is in regards to the PlayStation 3 gaming console. In most of the cases that I am familiar with, the 'fixed' system never lasts more than a few months. I only want Sony to be just and fair in this situation. My system does not work anymore. It's in mint condition and I, like many others have a $500 piece of worthless junk.

My first PS3 was purchased in November 2007. The fan went out in March 2008, and the unit was replaced. The fan on the second unit went out again in June 2008 and was replaced again. The third unit's Bluray player went out in June 2009 and I paid $149.00 for an out of warrant exchange. The fourth unit, today May 22 2010, will not come on. I called Sony and they said to send it in with another $149.00 plus taxes and all.

We purchased a PlayStation 3 for our son for Christmas last year with a one year warranty - serial number CK022317896. My son turned on his game 2 months ago and it shocked him and now will no longer turn on. We have been trying for 2 months to get this PlayStation fixed under our one year warranty. We have tried for 2 months with no luck from Sony. They either tell us to call a different person who never returns are calls. Finally, we got a hold of Hadekii **. He has either not returned our calls and then when we finally got a hold of him, he said he would call us back. It has been 3 weeks and still no solution to our issue with Sony. Sony's corporate line, you are unable to speak to anyone and the phone hangs up on you. The game has a defect and it gives an electrical shock and then the on-going run around that Sony has giving and they will not honor the warranty as they should.

I purchased a 60GB PS3 on launch date back in November 2006. My 2 cousins also purchased the same unit 2 and 3 months after I purchased mine, so in essence we all got launch units. Well 2 years later, my system got the yellow light of death in where the system won't boot and you lose all of your information game saves, pictures, data, music, etc. I contacted Sony, and was told it was out of warranty and I was made to pay $150 dollars to receive a refurbish in exchange. At that time I wasn't aware of how widespread this problem was until 4 months later when my cousin's PS3 died and 2 months later, my other cousin's PS3 died as well. We all paid the $150 and had Sony ship us refurbishes in exchange. Well recently my refurbish started to freeze up like my original one did when it died. Granted I have had my refurbish for over 90 days since the exchange was issued to me, I am not receiving polite support over the phone. I called and explained to them what was happening and they told me that I needed to wait until it died before I could send it in and that it would cost me an additional $150.
I can't deny I didn't lose it a bit, I am frustrated with the fact that we all paid $600 for that console and it dies at or around 2 years. Upon doing research online I find that it is happening to tons of people and Sony won't own up to it. At least Microsoft owned up to the issue and took care of people's 360's even if they had to have their arm twisted first. But Sony's "supervisor rep" was rude to me and pretty much tried to just rush me off the phone, he didn't want to hear my complaints at all. As a result, I lost all my data, the replacement unit which cost me $150 had scuffs on it, my unit was pristine when I sent it in and to top it off this refurbish is showing signs of failure in less than a year and Sony just wants me to cough up an additional $150 when I already paid 600 for the original and 150 for the refurbish. The only reason why I don't want to not fix it or replace it is because I already invested in a big library of blue ray movies and PS3 games.

My PS3 just got the so called YLOD (yellow light of death). I purchased it when they first came out in November of 06 or 07. It appears that this is a hardware failure which Sony is well aware of but refuses to admit to or do anything about the problem. I spoke with a Sony representative and was told that my only option would be to send it in and pay a 150 dollar out of warranty fee for it to be repaired.
I've found plenty of do it yourself guides on the internet and feel fairly confident that I could repair it myself. However, this completely shatters any good will of Sony. I've also read that not only the DIY, but also the official Sony fixes are only temporary due to the nature of the hardware failure. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sony Play Station 3 is unable to read any disks (DVD, Blue ray, games) after approx 16 months. The warranty lasted 12 months. It appears this is an extremely common problem and may be a mfg defect, not just a part failure due to normal use. I have to pay $159.6 to Sony for repair.

I have just purchased a new Sony PS3 only to find that after 30 minutes it sounds like a hair dryer beside my TV. No, my room isn't empty and the PS3 isn't in a tin. It's the fan inside the thing. It sounds like a 747 trying to take off forever. Sony said the noise isn't a fault. Well, maybe they should run that PS3 background sound in one of their meeting and see if they don't do their nut.

My 60GB PS3 stopped working, I could not even turn it on to troubleshoot it with customer service. Since it was past its warranty and could not be fixed, customer service informed me that I could trade it in and get a new model 120GB PS3 Slim if I paid the $150 fee and send my broken PS3 to them. I did so. When I shipped the console back, I followed all instructions given to me by the service center. I called the service center twice to ensure that my broken console had been received and that my order was on schedule. I spoke to two different representatives who both told me that the console had arrived and that a new 120GB PS3 had been sent to me. They also sent me email correspondence stating so.
When I received the new console, I turned it on and got an error message that the system could not read the hard disk. I turned it off again and checked the hard drive slot. There was no hard drive in the console. I called customer service right away to find out why there had not been a hard drive included. The representative then told me that because the console I sent had no hard drive in it, they then sent me a new console with no hard drive in it. Nowhere on the shipping instructions does it say that you must include the hard drive with the console, it only states to "back up all data", "deactivate your account" and "delete all users". I could not do any of these things because my PS3 would not even turn on, I did not want to send my hard drive along with the console because it still contained all my personal information including my account and credit card numbers. And since there were no instructions on the shipping slip that I was required to include my hard drive, I did not.
Now I've spoken to several different representative who all told me that there is nothing that can be done to resolve this matter. I cannot insert my 60GB hard drive into the new PS3 because I don't have the caddy that it requires to fit in the hard drive slot, and Sony will not send me a replacement nor do they know where to find one. All they sent me was the information for the screws to hold the hard drive inside the caddy, which is completely useless if I don't have the caddy itself. I offered to send my 60GB hard drive in to receive the 120GB hard drive, and was told this is not possible either. At no point in my correspondence to the service center was I ever told that I needed to include my hard drive with the console or that I would be sent a console without hard drive if I didn't.
How could I have possibly prevented this problem from happening if no one informed me of these things? Now I have a completely useless PS3, and haven't been offered any solution to this problem from customer service. The only way that I can use this console is if go out and find, and buy a new hard drive and hard drive caddy for it. If I were to spend that much money along with the console that I traded in and the $150 fee, I could have just bought a brand new PS3 120GB from a retailer. I have been a longtime customer of Sony and PlayStation, I have purchased every console including the PSP. However, I cannot use this product without a hard drive and therefore it is useless to me.

I sent my PS3 in for repairs that cost me $150 in Nov 09. I got my system back in Dec 09. It has worked fine until Mar 10. I have called customer support about this problem, only for them to tell me that I have to pay another $150 to get this one repaired because it's out of warranty. I feel used. I paid for my system to be repaired only to receive a refurbished one that has now gone out.

My PS3 broke and Sony refuses to fix it for free even though it's a hardware malfunction. Thousands of people have had this same problem. It's called the Yellow Light of Death, named after the Xbox 360's Red Rings of Death. Microsoft fixes Xbox 360s for free. Sony needs to provide better service or else they're going to lose their customers. My PS3 won't even turn on because of a hardware malfunction.

Sony has disabled the optional OS (operating system) feature on my PS3 (Playstation 3). I paid full price for a PS3, that allows the owner to install a second operating system (i.e. Linux). Sony has given owners a choice, to disable the secondary OS, or to disable the online and blu-ray abilities, and has offered no fair compensation for the reduced abilities of their system. I am effing mad! The price for a full featured PS3 was about US $800. The reduction of features and abilities reduces the PS3 to the same, or lesser value than that of the current US $200 model. Sony is stealing US $600 worth of features and abilities, from thousands of customers, and offering no compensation!

An advertised launch feature "OtherOS" has been disabled in a required firmware update. No compensation or additional features has been offered. This was one of the two reasons I bought a PS3 versus an Xbox360. I have to choose between loss of gaming/networking functionality or lack of a full Linux install.

Just last night while playing my Playstation 3, 60GB original model, the machine turns off with no warning whatsoever. I notice the power light is blinking red. I turned the system back on to try to remove the disc that is still in the machine. It won't turn on at all. I contacted Sony to find out how to get it fixed. They said that it will cost me $178 total to fix the problem as my warranty is no longer current.
I paid $700 for it when it first came out. That's a little pricey but okay. I'll pay it just so I can have my machine back that has all the bells and whistles. I put in a service request and get the ball moving on things. In the meantime, I started to browse Sony's forums and to my surprise many other people are having the same problem and all at around the same time.
Now if this were only a few isolated cases then, no big deal. The problem is that literally, hundreds to thousands of people are reporting this issue recently. Sony has offered no reason as to why this is happening to so many consoles all at the same time. The consumers are basically being told that it was "their own fault" that the system died. From what I can tell, most of the users had the system set in an area with good air flow so overheating is not the issue, as Sony seems to want to claim.
My system has never had an overheating issue as I keep an external fan blowing near it at all times of operation. I understand that my warranty is no good anymore, which would mean I have to pay for the repair. That would be fine except for the fact that this is not an isolated incident and Sony seems content on charging people $120-170 for a refurbished system that will fail within a few months also only to charge you another $120- 170 to replace it again.
Something need to be done about this as Playstation 3 users have contacted Sony, posted to the Sony forums, and complained all across the web. Sony just seems like it could care less that they obviously have an issue within these machines and that it's not the users' fault.
Funny how when you contact Sony about a fix they are fast to respond, within 24 hours or sooner, if it's going to cost the consumer. Try to contact them regarding this issue and all you get is the run around. This is, without a doubt, one of the worst cases of poor customer support I have ever encountered. I don't understand why Sony doesn't admit that there is a problem and offer a free or cheaper way to fix this.

On February 28, 2010, all fat version of PS3 network was down and my console was part of the network failure. It work perfectly fine on that day, then the next day it has a temperature issue because my system blinks green, then yellow, then red within couple seconds. I called CS and they say it would cost me 150 dollar for servicing my couple years old system due to their bug problem that affected my system. I have email confirmation showing that my system work finely on the 28th because I was able to create a new account using my PS3. Their network fixed bug cause my system to fail and it would cost more than half the price of a new system to fix my system.

I purchased one PlayStation 2 from Dubai 2 years back, but for the last 6 months, it wasn't working. I went to the Sony Service Center at **, they told me that it is not repairable. If it is under warranty, they can only replace it, but at the time of purchase, no body told me that PS2 is not repairable. I never expected this kind of response from Sony. Now I have decided not to purchase Sony products in the future and also advise all my friends to do so.

I bought a PS3 in the end of 2007 and before the warranty expired, I had a problem with it so I went to the Sony Service to fix it. They told me that they don't have parts for it so they gave me another one. Now, i had an error in the system (8001050f). I tried to fix it by formatting it but it was not fixed so I went again to the service of Sony and they told me that I have to pay 800 sr and they will give me a new one and the warranty is only a month! So how come I have to pay for it? Please, I need a solution.

I bought a 60GB PS3 system in the end of 2006, and it has come to my attention that I bought a defective product. My PS3 has been in a properly ventilated area, I never let it run for prolonged periods of time, and I never physically damaged it in any way, but one day, it suddenly ceased to function. If I try to turn my PS3 on, the lights will turn green, yellow, and then constantly blink red. When I called Sony Customer Service I learned that even though I did not do anything to make my PS3 stop working, it will cost me $150 for them to send me a refurbished system, or about $180 to have them fix my own system, since the warranty has expired.
If I actually did something to the PS3 to cause it to break down, I think the $150 fee is completely reasonable. However, considering this problem occurred because of a manufacturing defect, I should not be held accountable to have it repaired. The problem has been christened the "yellow light of death",or YLOD to parody the equivalent Xbox 360 problem known as the "red ring of death."
I learned that Microsoft recognized the problem was their fault, therefore they extended the warranty to three years for all Xbox owners that experienced the problem. I paid $600 for the Playstation 3 and now Sony ridiculously expects at least $150 more because their product broke down on its own. The product was just counting down to its destruction since the day that I bought it. I shouldn't have to pay to fix a product that was made to be broken. A simple Google search of the term "YLOD" and you will find how most victims of this problem have the same 60GB PS3 that they bought either in the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007.
I have always been faithful to Sony. I have bought all the Playstation systems (1-3), the PSP, at least one hundred games, and two Sony flat screen TVs. I have been a loyal Sony customer, so I feel extremely hurt that they have turned me the money hungry cold shoulder. After hearing me complain once, they told me they could not repair my system free of charge, but they would offer me one free video game. It was a nice gesture, however, I do not understand what they expect me to do with a game if I do not have a system to play it on.

My complaint is with regards to repair service provided by Sony Entertainment and an electronic defect that warrants a recall of the original Playstation 3 gaming console. Additionally, Sony's predatory policy of extortion is a problem. I rarely used the Playstation after this, but when I did use it a number of months later, it exhibited the same disk read error. I attempted to contact Sony via the support website and also by written letter, but I didn't receive any response.
I filed a complaint with the BBB in November. A month later, I received a call from a Sony representative. Once again, the representative wanted me to pay more money to have my PS3 repaired. $150 again. The representative went out of her way to state, "The disk read error problem is not a common problem. I assure you only a small percentage of PS3's are returned for this reason." I believe the representatives are required to rehearse and state to consumers this propaganda. I don't find it fair to have to pay $150 over and over again to repair an obvious defect and stated this to the representative.
In January, a Sony representative contacted the Better Business Bureau in San Francisco and stated that I was offered a chance to repair my PS3 or have it replaced with an upgraded one. However, Sony left out the fact that they wanted to extort more money $150 for the replacement. After paying $450 for the system and an additional $150 to have it repaired once, paying an additional $150 is unfair to have a working system. A total $750 for a PS3? How many people has Sony taken advantage of for this scheme of theirs?

I paid $500 for Playstation 3 about a year and a half ago and it's now useless due to the "yellow light of death" hardware failure which Sony now wants an additional $180 to fix. This is for what I (and others) consider a manufacturer's defect

My Sony PS3 died. It starts up, and after 2-3 seconds, it flashes a yellow light then a red light. The was a Christmas present for my sons 3 years ago. Google it and you will see sites speaking of the "yellow light of death." Sony wants $150 to fix it, and it has been well taken care of. Sony only has a one-year warranty. There are many sites on the web regarding this issue and companies beyond Sony willing to charge less to repair

Sony PS3 Blu-Ray drive failure. Sony knows that the Blu-Ray drives are failing due to a firmware update or some other reason, and they aren't fixing the problem for free.

Sony PS3 died. It starts up and after 2-3 seconds flashes a yellow light and then a red light. This was a birthday present for my son two years ago. They want $150 to fix and it has been well taken care of. Sony only has a one-year warranty. We don't have $150 to fix this!

I called, complaining about my son's PS3 system needing repair due to the system not turning on and spoke to three different supervisors regarding ways to make some kind of payment plan to cover the cost of repair and shipping. And I was informed by all three supervisors that there is not any way they can assist me. I explained that I have no way to cover the full cost of $156 at the present time and to see if they can help me in this time of recession and was told no under no certain terms is the company able to assist me with that and they were rude.
All I wanted to do was get my teenager's system that I paid $600 2 years ago fixed. I am willing to pay just needed assistance with the billing. At this time I have to choose from food or paying full price to fix the system. That is wrong. I'm not asking for a handout. I just needed a payment plan. My son has Tourette syndrome and the game is his only friend. He is very distressed that he cannot play his system. All I wanted was to get some help to fix the damaged unit and a payment plan. How hard is that to help consumers in need with the way the economy is?

I purchased a Sony Playstation 3 two years ago on December 14, 2007. For the past two years, it worked fine. Then yesterday, January 14, 2010, the Blu-ray drive failed completely. I have done some research, and as it turned out, I am far from alone. Many people have downloaded firmware from Sony and had hardware failures.
When I contacted Sony, they refused to acknowledge that they are liable for any wrongdoing. They told me the cost of repair, shipping included, was $180.00. This is outrageous, when it was their fault! Even if the drive failed for another reason besides firmware, they have installed cheap Blu-ray lasers in all the machines manufactured in 2007. They should've recalled them, but they sold them instead hoping to collect more money from customers needing repair.
I was even told by a Sony customer service rep that if I used my system a lot, I could expect it to fail in 2 years! Now after paying $500 for the system, they want yet more money to fix their faulty hardware! It's most likely brought on by their faulty firmware. I have read that there is a class action litigation pending against Sony for this very problem. I would love to join! Sony needs to admit they are at fault and repair or replace the hardware of the systems affected by this!

I purchased a PS3 in 2008 and had to send it in for freezing. I received a refurbished one that was the first thing that was wrong. I should have gotten a new one, but I didn't have the original receipt. Nevertheless, I fell for that and now 1 year later, it starts the same thing all over again. I send it in and they send it back saying that the serial number is missing; no scratches, no marks, serial numbers don't come off that easy. I think that my refurbished unit never had a number maybe due to the previous repairs so now I can't replace or repair this $600.00 unit if they had given me a new one. I wonder if I would be in this situation.

ps3 died ofter 17 month's. I followed all precautions and took care of my product as recommended. Plenty of breath ability and vacuuming. but now that its out of warranty it's my problem. they state that only 3% of ps3's fail,if the number is so small why don't they own up to a engineering problem.

I purchased my Sony Playstation 3 from Buy.com on November 18th, 2007 for $489.00. It was working perfectly fine up until mid-November 2009; I never had any issues with DVD playback, Blu-ray playback, the internet browser, or playing PS3 games. However, when I downloaded Sony's System Update v3.01, everything aside from my internet browser stopped working. I am positive that there is not an issue with my actual hardware, since the machine was operating perfectly before I downloaded Sony's new system update.
Since the standard warranty on the PS3 is only 12 months, Sony refuses to fix the system for free. They are asking for $150 to replace the system with a working, refurbished unit. I have researched online about the issue and this is not an isolated incident. There are thousands of reported cases of Blu-ray drive failures after the new system update was installed on the system. Sony has made no attempt to rectify the issue and has released a statement that the problem is not firmware related but rather a hardware problem (the actual PS3 unit). All I want is for Sony to compensate everyone whose Playstation was damaged due to this update. I believe that after spending upwards of $500 for an entertainment system, it is safe to assume that it should work for more than just 20 months. Thank you very much for your time and patience, I look forward to hearing from you.

I had bought a PS3 in February 2008, in September of 2008 my PS3 would start freezing while playing games both online and off. I dealt with it for a little while, until the video output wouldnt even show up on the television. I called Sony in December/January to have Sony services it, and they did free of charge. In early November of 2009 the same thing happened except the output didnt work immediately. I called Sony for service again and they said I was out of the Year from purchase and 90 repair warranty. I had fought with the customer service for an hour until I asked for their supervisor.
After arguing with the supervisor and stating I did not pay $400 for a system to break down within a year and break down again within a year of repair to pay an additional $150 for a motherboard to be repaired, the supervisor began to see my point. But then told me something I already knew Sir when Sony sold the PS3 they were losing money from how much it cost to manufacture. I came back with a quick response How is this, the customers fault and why do I have to make up for Sonys poor decision? Then the supervisor told me they would replace the system free of charge, but would keep to the 90 day warranty from now on.
I received the PS3 back from service on December 2 and on December 12 the PS3 would not recognize the PS3 games. I quickly called Sony and talked with customer service. They told me it would need to come in for service again! I asked for a new gaming system or a full refund. I was denied the request, but they are still going to fix the PS3 free of charge. Isnt there a law to protect the consumer from consistent malfunctions, kind of like a lemon law? What is the protocol if I receive another defective system that breaks down within a year (I dont think the 90 service warranty should apply with all the problems I have had)? Shouldnt I be entitled to a new system not a refurbished one, or a full refund?

Bought Playstation 3 and 2 yrs after purchase. it broke due to excessive heat and poor soldering of the chips inside and when i call them was told to pay 150 for them to repair it. This is a manufacturer defect and they should be fixing them for free.

I will not be buying any Sony products! Last year (around 11/8)I bought a Play Station 3 that had a rebate attached to it and I did not recieve my rebate money. It was not applied to my account or sent to me after 2 request.

Play station stopped working after less than 2 years of use by 2 professional adults... The unit was minimally used (once/week x 2 hours), mainly for blue ray DVD's. It was stored in a well maintained area (e.g. dusting - new home, controlled room temperature, out of direct sunlight, etc.). I also have much older electronic devices Wii (Wii is newer-exception), cable modem, wireless router (3+ years), several laptops (4+ years) and a DVD player stored in the same area, all of which have maintained optimal functionality.
Recently, the system suddenly (watched a movie, put in another disc and it would not read) stopped reading discs. After calling Playstation customer service I was told that the product was no longer in warranty and that it would cost $150 to repair. The superviser described this offer as Sony being "happy to take care of the problem". Additionally, I would not receive the same device, it would be replaced by another repaired playstation 3.
I explained that I am a quality Sony customer who has owned and recommended their products to others despite the recent "hear say" pertaining to decline in product quality and poor customer service. I have never filed a complaint such as this with any company, so that sums up how disappointed in Sony that I am.
My husband and I will be discarding the playstation 3 and we will no long purchase Sony products as we cannot spend $150 to repair a device that will likely suffer future failures. We will purchase a computer from HP with blue ray dvd capability and run a line to our T.V. Additionally, we will recommend to friends and family that Sony products be avoided, as in the words of the customer service rep, they are "cutting edge", thus likely to have more problems. I have been looking into purchasing a Sony Vaio notebook and Bravia flat screen, however, i will now be reviewing superior competitor products.

I purchased it for approximately $600 and had to ship back and forth 3 times for SONY to fix it. SONY has taken time and money for a product that clearly is a lemon. yet they want $150 to correct the problem and cannot guarantee it will not happen again. Oh and lets not forget the $40 to have it mailed to SONY.

I bought a ps3 on Oct 24 2007 for $499.99 and on Nov 8 2009 it shut down and will not work anymore. It has a common problem of the YLOD - the yellow light of death. This machine was never overheated or abused in any manner. Sony will fix it for $169.99 and warranty it for 90 days. Why should I spend that much money on a defective machine only to get a 90 day warranty when a new one with a 1 year warranty is $299.99? This is faulty hardware and a faulty product. If Sony has no problem selling a $499.99 product that breaks in 2 years I will not be buying any other Sony product and I will not stop trying to get some of my money back for what is clearly an inferior product.

Whilst playing a game on my PS3, the machine froze. I pressed various buttons and decided to reboot. Now the PS3 doesn't recognise discs: DVD, Blu-Ray, CD, PS2 or PS3. My machine is barely 2 years old and it's broken already. I contacted their so-called support only to be told it's broken and I need to pay $150 for repairs. Normally I'd pay the money, as I have with my 4 year old HP laptop, but a mchine that gets 10 hours a week use? It's criminal.
Sony wouldn't entertain the idea that it may be a fault with their software upgrade (3.01)which is forced upon us. I've read many, many complaints about their software upgrade and have even heard about class action lawsuits. Stephen informed me that he stands behind the Sony brand and provided absolutely no help or support.
I will never, ever buy Sony again and I strongly urge any parents out there to buy the 360 for Xmas, don't waste your money on the PS3 because it will break and you won't receive support. Now I don't have a machine and I'm out of pocket $2500 when you include the games and Blu-Ray movies purchased over the past 2 years.

Due to sonys propriatary software I bought a blue ray disc went to play it on my PS3 but it would not play. Sonys system complained it needed an update but none was included with movie and I have no way nor any idea how get it.

Purchased playstation 3 two years ago for $600.00. System was less than a year old when it stopped working. I called Sony and they send me a refurbished system in Januray of 2009. The system has now stop working again. I called Sony again and was advised that the refurbished system was only warrented for 3 months and the cost to repair would be $150.00. $750.00 for a sytem that has broken twice in two years is ridiculous. I beleive that the system has numerous bugs and has manufacturing errors that keep these systems overheating. If I agree to pay Sony $150.00 for each repair for every three months, I will repay for a new system every year. Very unfair and sham on sony.

I called Playstation technical support in regards to my two year old playstation not reading any discs. When I spoke to the representative I was asked if I had abused the device or dropped at any time. When I told him no. He proceeded in telling me that I had to send in the device for repair for a fee of 150 dollars. I then asked that why should I have to pay a fee for an item that was never mistreated nor was it ever moved. I was then told that the policy in Sony's warranty states that after the one year warranty the consumer was responsible for any repairs that may be needed for the device. I then asked what if the reason the device faulted was due to their updates. And all that was stated by the representative is I have to send in the device and that they were sorry for the inconvenience.

I bought my 40GB PS3 in November of 2007. The system worked for a year and a half, then I started receiving the 80010514 error message. Sony stated that they will fix the problem for $150. I refuse to give this company more money to fix a problem they created. They are the ones who chose the internal components such as the Blu-Ray model "kes-400a" which is supposed to have an 11 year life of continuous use, but are failing much sooner.
Sony will not listen to the customer until they are sued, Consumers in the US need to expect more from companies who sell us goods, we shouldn't have to spend more money (warranty) we should get a product that lasts, Warranties should be tied to the cost of each product, for example a $400 product should come with at least a 2-3 year automatic warranty. I refuse to pay for an extended warranty because doing so continues to drive us down the path of expecting less from the manufacture. My neighbor has returned 5 PS3's all through Best Buy. This company is terrible. I will never buy any Sony product in the future.

I sent my Sony playstation3 in to be fixed on may 5, 2009 that cost me $149 and now it's october 26, 2009 and the same thing is happening to the new system they sent me and now they tell me if I want it repaired (AGAIN)! It would be another $149 bucks (AGAIN)! I've done nothing wrong to the system just played it like you should and I dont feel I should Pay for something that SONY has messed up.

hello i wrote on here the other day about the repair facility problems. that sony has repairing the playstation 3 systems. and how the game uncharted 2 broke my system. i bought the slim the next day but i sent sony an email telling them what happened and i also told them i bought a new system. well i asked them if they could deactivate that broken system so i could activate my new system for video. they replied i would have to pay $150 to get it deactivated. because the only way to deactivate it is to send it in for replacement. now i don't know much about certain laws but isn't this called extortion or something? or somehow against the law? because i find it funny that they can ban you from ever being able to use your account and ps3 from being abl to go online ever again. but they can't deactivate your system from a remote psn server?
wow this is so wrong. they only care about that $150 charge they make you pay even though a game made by a company they own broke my system. they should have to pay me for all of the heartache and frustration i have had to put up with from their repair facility. i have highblood pressure now because of it and have to take medicine to get it down. i have never had highblood pressure in my life never. so they need to change the way they do business or they won't have one anymore because everyone will sue them into the ground. i'm even thinking of suing them but have no money to.

I have a Sony PS3. I bought it in Febuary 2008. For 499.00 plus tax. Just recently it will not start up. It turns green to yellow back to blinking red. People in the U.K. are getting theirs fixed for free, what's the deal with that? I also have about 20 games for my PS3. I don't like wasting money. I hope no one else invests a lot of money, just to have it become worthless in 2 years. About 540.00 dollars with tax for the console and about 500.00 for games and another controller.

i own a 80gb ps3 with backwards compatibility. i bought my original in november of 07 on black friday. 5 months after i bought it it died i had it replaced and then the replacement died within 6 months. now since i was out of warranty i had to pay $149 to get it replaced. and they sent me one that froze all the time so i sent it back. well the next they sent was all scratched up like it was drug down a dirt road. well i called and complained and wrote and email to them complaining.
they sent a box right away i sent that in. they sent me what seemed to be an ok one but everything was slow like in a slow motion movie. i sent that one back then they sent me one with a bad hard drive that was getting corrupt left and right. so i sent that one back and they sent me one that did not play certain demos and disc games but would play some a fraction of games and demos. i took a pic and wrote a letter.
i am loosing faith in sony nowadays because they have this company that only cares about the money. and not it's customers. well they sent me another ps3 it was all fine and dandy it played everything no freezing or anything. then i rented uncharted 2 the other days it played fine no hiccups or anything and then i got to the last level and it hard froze my system.
i could not use my remotes to quit the game nor did the power button work. so i had to turn it off by the power switch in the back. i know your not supposed to do that but that was the only way i could turn it off. well i turned the switch back on and the red standby light came on i hit the button to turn it on again but nothing. i hit the button on the remote and nothing. so i got really mad and sad at the same time.
i ofcoruse am out of warranty now. so i have to pay to get it fixed or buy a new one with money i don't have. and after all it was their game that did this to my system. i stil have an atari that works perfectly i mean come on why would they make something this high priced to only last as long as the warranty? once the warranty is gone so is your ps3. doesn't matter if it is new or not.
i think something should be done about this problem. sony always denies any existence of any problems whether it be the ylod, bluray drive problems, firmware problems ect. it is ridiculous. anyways if you want the picture i took of the last [one] they sent me just email me and i will email it to you. thanks

This unit functioned well until October 21 when it stopped working due to, what I have heard called, the Yellow Light of Death, or YLOD.
The Safety and Support manual that I recieved with my Playstation does not mention this combination of flashes, green, to yellow, to flashing red, although all other flashes are referenced. I visited the Playstation Network's Knowledge Center this combination means "..That there may be an internal part within the PS3 system. This may be caused by a variety of reasons and would need to be diagnosed at our service center." For a fee of $150.00, plus tax. After researching the YLOD online I have learned that this is a problem that is quite wide spread. One post I read chronicals over 500 members of the Playstation Network that have recieved the YLOD. The most common reason I have seen for the YLOD is that the solder Sony uses on the motherboard cracks as the unit heats up then cools off.
The problem seem exclusive to the PS3 and does not appear to happen in the PS2, PSP, or the Sony laptop. I have since learned that Sony will fix this problem for free for owners that live in the UK. I have not found out why yet. My concern is that if I send my unit in to be repaired or replaced that I will be given another faulty unit and with only a 90 day warranty. I believe that Sony knows about this problem and has done nothing to fix it. In fact they appear to be profiting from their consumers woes. They are flipping faulty units from one customer to the next at $150.00 a pop. I do not know what to do. Either I give Sony $150.00 more or I keep my $550.00 paperweight.

I have owned a CECHA01 60GB model of the Sony Playstation 3 for approximately a year and a half. The warranty for this product runs out after 1 year, and up until this point has always run fine.
Recently, I loaded a new PS3 game into the console and played for 10 minutes. The console froze then shut down. Attempting to restart the console resulted in a yellow light, 3 quick beeps, and the console shutting down and flashing the red light repeatedly.
I called the Sony Playstation customer support to find out what could be done. I was informed that the machine would need to be sent to Sony for repairs. As my machine is out of warranty, this would cost me $149 plus tax.
I explained to the representative that I did not have that much money currently available and that I'd have to wait for it to be repaired. However, the game that was in the machine was only purchased earlier that day, and I wanted it removed for use on another console while I waited to be able to repair the broken one.
Sony's response was that the only way to remove the disc from the console is to send it to them for repair (for $149 plus tax), and they would send my game back along with it.
Several of the representatives I spoke to (after making my way up the ladder as far as I could by asking to speak to supervisors and managers) said that I could either take the machine apart myself, or have it repaired by a third party technician. Moments after making this suggestion, they also mentioned that it was not recommended by Sony (then why are you recommending that I do that?), and would possibly be grounds for Sony to refuse to service my console.

I have owned a Playstation 3 for 15 months (3 months out of warranty) and now after updating to firmware 3.00 and 3.01 the PS3 does not read Blu ray discs or games. I am now being told by Sony that I have to pay $150 to fix the system that I only used 2-3 times a week, not even 200 hours in the 15 months I owned it! Then I am told that I will only have a 90 warranty (so that when the problme happens again, I can pay another $150??) I own a PSX, a PS2, a PSP, and I have never had an issue..at least their competitor is accepting responsibility for the their own hardware's failures, why won't Sony do the same???

I purchased a 60gb Playstation 3 in 2007 and as of yesterday it is dead (yellow light of death). Called Sony and as it is out of the one year warranty they would charge $150 to fix it or replace it with another unit (that will undoubtedly fail after the 90 warranty). I did'nt mistreat the PS3, it was well ventilated, clean, and always used with an expensive power conditioner/surge protector. We need a class action suit, this is a huge problem that Sony is ignoring and getting rich from.

The PlayStation 2 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up states that it has online capabilities (possibly because they merely copied everything from the Wii box) while there is no way for PS2 users to get online with it. It also claims the game supports up to 8 players with multitap (which it does not).

One of these times it was some defect from a download. The other two times it was the some diod eye?? Well here I sit for time number 4!!!! Now it is the YOLD. This is insane! I spent 600.00 dollars on this product! It has been in the mail more than in my home and I am fed up! Someone has to do something please!!! Calling the customer service is a joke. The same questions over and over with the same response until you want to speak with a higher up then you get lied to! They can't give out the name of a manager or they are in a meeting, then call back 5 min later and all the managers went home.
We have been lied to, heckled and just down right disrespected by this company. There are too many people complaining of the same exact thing! I can tell you this...I never want to deal with Sony again!! Ever!!!!

Sony's software disabled our blue ray players ability to work properly. Sony says its a malfunction with the system and what us to pat 150 to have it repaired. There software is the problem and there techs say its a soft ware problem, but when your out of warranty they want you to pay. Sony has basicly broke into my house and broke my playstation and then they want me to pay to have them repair it, that's just crazy.

play station 3 died after sony sent a update 3.01. they say it has to be repaired and send in what a scam. now I have to either get another or pay them to fix a mistake they made.

I spoke with a Sony rep any they informed me that I would need to pay $150 for it to be repaired. This would be my second time sending my console to Sony for repair, but not for the same reason. I beleive this is not right. This YLOD is a wide spread problem that many PS3 console owners are experiencing. Chariging the consumers money to get it fixed is down right wrong. Can someone please give us a helping hand on dealing with Sony.

I purchased a Sony Playstation 3 on or about Dec. 20th, 2007. The unit did not work when taken out of the box, but reading the troubleshooting portion of the PS3 manual, I got the unit working by re-setting it via the master power button and holding it down until it's reset. I had virtually no trouble with the unit, except for the same thing twice more, but it was very rare. (the unit would not power on). Each time I had to re-set all the settings. 2 times I've had to totally re-format the unit (via the PS3 menu system in the unit), due to errors causing the unit to not work properly.
Now, after just over 2 years with same unit, the screen went black, and when re-setting again, unit works only in standard definition, but very dim display. Burnt smell coming from rear of unit as well. I paid 499.00 dollars for the unit. I have sent a notice to Sony, USA customer service, and they replied telling me I need to send it in for service, which costs 150.00 plus tax. I don't think it lasted long enough to justify the cost of the unit. Price has dropped 3 times since my purchase, and I feel like I was taken advantage of due to the numerous people who have had the same or worse problem with their PS3. Some receive new units that don't work. I think mine was just bad enough to have the problem from the beginning, but not show the symptoms enough for them to locate the problem, thus I didn't send it in while it was within the one year warranty.

My brand new PS3 did not start at all; the red light turned green for three seconds then went yellow for one second then beeped three times and went blinking red. After search in internet I found out that this was a very common manufacturing defect on this product, called YLOD. There were lots of people suffering from this defect, but I was the only one who had this defect on a brand new unit.
On the 24th of June I sent an e-mail to SONY explaining the problem. They replied on the 25th of June with the following information:
There are no authorized repair facilities outside of North America. I can have Playstation(R) products repaired (only in the United States or Canada and only if you purchased a North American Playstation(R) product). They advised me to find a friend/family member in the United States, to whom I can ship the unit (so that he/she could send the unit to SONY for repair). Later I would be able to pick up the unit from them.
They also said that I may ship my PS3 internationally to SONY, provided that I found a valid U.S. (or Canadian) mailing address in order to ship the system back to me; since they do not ship internationally.
Since I hadn't been able to find any acquaintance in US, I sent another e-mail to SONY-EU (which is the responsible SONY dealer in my country) to ask for their help on the repair of the brand new PS3 that I hadn't been able to start at all. They directed me to an Authorized SONY Service.
I called this service for an out of warranty repair (since they said the warranty is only valid in US); this Authorized Service said that they could not even accept the unit to the service since it was not purchased in Turkey. I informed SONY-EU that the Authorized SONY Service they recommended refused to accept the unit. This time they replied (in writing) that the Authorized SONY Services could provide service only to the products imported by them.
On the same day I replied to SONY (US) stating that I didn't have a chance to send the unit to US, the local Authorized SONY Services do not accept the unit since it was not purchased in this country, and asked what I could do under these circumstances. They provided a link for applicable SONY services and this link (not surprisingly) took me back to the same service that told me that they did not accept unit purchased out of this country.
Upon this I found a 3rd party repair shop on the 1st of July, in ISTANBUL and shipped the PS3 to them. After waiting for more than a month, on August 5th, they informed me that they had tried everything that they could do (including reflow), but could not keep the equipment working more than two days, it kept giving the same failure.
A Brand new PS3 came with a fatal defect. (A defective unit should not pass the final inspection and test at the factory), SONY did not provide the necessary support to a consumer who bought a brand new unit with a fatal defect, The Authorized SONY Service listed by SONY on the WEB, refused to service the unit (even for an out of warranty repair to be paid by the Customer), as a result of this I was forced to find a third party repair shop (and therefore to void the warranty).

I bought a 60gb Playstation 3 from Sony in December of 2007 for $499.99. In April of 2008 it had a system failure. I called Sony and they sent me a box to ship my PS3 back to them for a fix or a refurbished one. I did this and was sent a refurbished PS3. August of '09 the refurbished PS3 has system failure called YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death)which is known as a manufacturer defect. I have researched this online and have found that many, many consumers of this product have suffered the same result.
Sony only offers its customers a 1yr. warranty on this product for natural wear and tear, if you have problem after the 1yr. warranty expires then they want to charge you $150.00 to fix or send you refurbished PS3. Then they only want to give you a 90 day warranty on the fixed or refurbished product. After 90 days you must pay the $150.00 again for a fix that is caused by a manufacturer defect.
The Microsoft XBOX 360 has a similar issue called the RROD (Red Ring Of Death). From my research the systems last only an average of a year and a half before this problem arises, the warranty is for 1yr. Now I have a $500 product that is less than 2 years old with a $60 game stuck inside of it. Can't get game out of system with out messing up tamper resistant sticker that manufacturer puts on so they know if system has been opened which nullifies any warranty or fix.
Due to defect I must shell out an additional $150 to have fixed or send me a refurbished system with the same potential defect that could cost me an additional $150. Seems that Sony would either fix the defect or offer a 3 yr. warranty, since the system average before problem is 18 months.

Received a PS3 around 01/08. Stopped reading discs around 4/09. Had to pay $150 service fee to Sony since they would not recognize the failure as their fault and no consumer. Received refurbished unit back which promptly stopped working 3 hours after receiving it. Have to send in PS3 again. Which is more inconvenience & aggravation.
90 day warranty on refurbished units & with current track record, the unit should fail again. If it fails 4 months after receiving it, would cost another $150 to service. All due to POOR QUALITY HARDWARE with their systems. Can not find a legit customer service rep for Sony. PS3 customer service number is directed to the TECH CENTER. They are not able to offer anything. No extended warranties, no new systems at all. They don't even have the capabilities of offering these. They are just a tech center.
I feel I am owed compensation for the complete disatisfaction of this product. Going on 3rd PS3 unit in less then 2 years. The problems I encountered are Sony's fault, not my own. PS3 unit at the time cost $500+ dollars. Was giving a 1 year factory warranty. Many of those whose PS3s are failing are coming from 2 specific models made between mid 06 to mid 08. THERE IS A PROBLEM. Sony will not recognize it and will just keep ripping people off with their service cost & lack of product quality support.
PS3 unit at the time cost $500+ dollars. Service repair cost is $150. Only giving a 90 day warranty. If the refurbished unit backs 10 days after the 90 warranty, it will cost another $150 to fix. It is an ongoing cycle.

The Brand New PS3 that was Sold with YLOD: During my recent trip to US, I purchased a brand new PS3 from AMAZON.COM (Order #102-9219028-2895431). It was delivered to one of my friend's address who was in US at that time, on the 15th of June. I picked the unopened package on the 20th of June and returned to my country, TURKEY. I setup the unit as detailed in the User's Manual on the 23rd of June and plugged it to a 400W transformer (that converts 220 VAC to 110 VAC). My brand new PS3 does not start at all; the red light turns green for three seconds then goes yellow for one second then beeps three times and goes to flashing/blinking red?
On the 24th of June I sent an e-mail to SONY explaining the problem. They replied on the 25th of June with the following information:
There are no authorized repair facilities outside of North America. I can have Playstation(R) products repaired (only in the United States or Canada and only if you purchased a North American Playstation(R) product). They also said that I may ship my PS3 internationally to SONY, provided that still I need to find a valid U.S. (or Canadian) mailing address in order to ship the system back to me; since they do not ship internationally.
Meantime, I sent another e-mail to SONY-EU (which is the responsible SONY dealer in my country) to ask for their help on the repair of the brand new PS3 that I could not even be able to start once. This time they replied (in writing) that the Authorized SONY Services can provide service only to the products imported by them.
On the same day I replied to SONY (US) stating that I don't have a chance to send the unit to US, the local Authorized SONY Services do not accept the unit since it was not purchased in this country, and asked what I could do under these circumstances. In summary: A Brand new PS3 came with a fatal defect. (A defective unit should not pass the final inspection and test at the factory), SONY did not provide the necessary support to a consumer who bought a brand new unit with a fatal defect, The Authorized SONY Service listed by SONY on the WEB, refused to service the unit (even for an out of warranty repair to be paid by the Customer).

I Purchased a playstation 3 in july 2007 and it has now (august 2009) broken. it is not of fault of my own. it is a common problem in the playstation 3 and is a hardware fault. yet playstation 3 want me to pay 150 pounds to get it fixed when it is not my fault it has broken.

I have had a Playstation 3 system since Decemnber 2007. My parents bought it for us for Christmas. We played the system and it functioned perfectly until March 2009. We believe my younger brother left the system on and it overheated because it would no longer power on. We ordered Sony's $150 repair service (because it was out-of-warranty) to have it either repaired or exchanged for a working system in late June of 2009. We received their box and shipped it and received a system yesterday July 29th.
We played the system that day and today and it was working properly. However, we came home later this evening July 30th, and discovered that the system was no longer "reading" or "recognizing" the blu-ray game discs. We called Sony and after trying a few options, they told us we had to send it in AGAIN. We told them we did not feel comfortable doing this because we could easily get another broken system, and have to keep going through this process.
Their warranty for the "new" PS3 is only 90 days, so they could essentially make a profit if it breaks down in 3 months. I do not appreciate their lack of value in customer service and their unwillingness to compromise at all in the situation. We wanted a BRAND NEW system "from the box" or a refund and they refused. We are stuck with another repair request and are frustrated with the way Sony has handled the matter. We have bought all their game systems and are very dissatisfied with their service.

This is more so of a rant against the Sony Playstation3 game system. I smell something fishy about Sony's operations and the way they do business.
After paying nearly 500 dollars for a brand new 80GB system barely a month ago, who would have known that the machine would stop working? It may have overheated or had a hard drive issue..Who knows? However, if one is paying this kind of money for a video game, then one expects top notch quality within the system. Not the case here!
Then, when I contacted Sony about the problem, they wanted me to send the unit to them, pay 150 dollars, and have a refurbished unit sent to me. This is unacceptable. I did not buy a refurbished unit, so why would I want one sent to me? For that system can break down too and the cycle to be repeated all over again? I don't think so! On top of it all, I've read countless consumer complaints on the internet against Sony Playstation3 (and prior Playstation systems) regarding the same system malfunction issues and the same run around you get from Sony. This is by far no coincidence.
If there is any type of class action suit that will be brought against Sony Playstation, please count me in! It's shady the way they do business!

I purchased a PlayStation3 model CECHG01 on December 26th of 2007. The blu-ray diode in my drive burnt out on July 3rd of 2009. In the course of my investigation of what happened, I discovered many other users have had the same issue occur about one year after the purchase of the same model of PlayStation3. The warranty period of the system is one year from the date of purchase. I contacted customer service who insisted the problem I was encountering did not exist, and that my console must be sent in for repair. I would have to pay $150 to have my machine fixed. I find it outrageous that Sony denies the existence of my problem, and that they take the position that they do not need me as a customer. I do realize that nothing will likely come of my complaint, but I do hope at one point a class action suit is brought against Sony. Something I paid $400 for should not become defective after a year and a half of light to moderate use.

My PlayStation 3 does not work anymore and SCEA is stating that I pay $149 plus sales tax, to get it repaired/refurbished PS3 back. I have owned all of Sony's gaming consoles from PlayStation 1, 2, 3, and the PSP. However, none of them have broken down within three years. I still have a PlayStation 2 and it is in great working condition, but a $600 unit that breaks down in three years is not reasonable.

Blu-ray disc drive failure on a Sony Playstation 3, 6 months past warranty expiration. The unit used primarily for Blu-ray movie watching. The unit is cleaned weekly and kept in a clean environment. Sony's online service request area informed me that $150 was needed to fix anything wrong with my PS3. $400 hardware that fails 6 months out of warranty is garbage, considering that the manufacturer charges its customers a flat rate $150 to fix their defective equipment.

After 16-18 months, my Blu-ray stopped working. Everything else (CD, DVD, PS2) plays except PS3 games and Blu-ray movies. This only started happening after a firmware update. I have seen many others who have had the same problem. Sony is charging $150 to each person to fix this.

I have owned my PlayStation 3 80gb since November of 2007. I have a total of eight PlayStation 2's and seven PSPs. I have over 200 PlayStation 2 games, 50 PSP games, and 50 PlayStation 3 games, some of which have never been played. I have seven children who all have their own. I have purchased a lot of equipment over time for the PlayStation. I have never allowed my children to play the PlayStation 3 due to the expensive cost of the console. I have only played it maybe 30 times. My wife purchased the PS3 for me for my birthday spending over $600 on the system itself, not including any of the games she purchased for me. Everyone of my kids' PlayStation 2's no longer work. I have fixed them all many times but they no longer can be fixed. My children's PSPs seem to be all still working for now.
I recently had back surgery and was looking forward to the required relaxation playing my PS3 and the same day I came home from the hospital it would not work. It no longer will play any game, DVD or anything. I called Sony explaining what had happened and asked that as a loyal customer if they could help me. I was told for another $160 they could fix my system for me. After explaining all of the equipment I have purchased from them and the condition of them, they refused to help me. They offered me a free game. I could not believe that they would offer me a free game. I do not own a working console to play a game on. I feel they were being smart asses because they knew I could not play it without a working game console. After my extensive review of post from other dissatisfied customers, I am now aware that I am not alone on this issue. The company is well aware of the issues with their system and continue to sell their systems.

I purchased a Sony PlayStation 3 approximately 1 year and 4 months ago from Best Buy for $400.00 for my 16 year old son. He has other gaming systems and has only played the PS3 approximately for a combined total of three to four months. The PS3 will no longer read discs (Games, Blueray DVD's, or Music CD's). Sony offers a 1 year warranty, but unfortunately the PS3 is just out of the warranty period.
I called Sony who told me that the only thing for me to do was to send it to them and they would repair it or replace it with a refurbished system for $149.00 more dollars. After researching the problem on the internet I'm realizing that it's not just me that's experiencing this issue, but hundreds to possibly thousands of others and Sony's doing nothing to right it's wrong.
Consequently, I have spent a total of $400.00 for the PS3 console itself. Another $400.00 in games and gear (Rockband equipment) to play games and the system has only worked for approximately four months. Now Sony wants me to spend another $150.00 to repair an issue that they are well aware of. They should issue a recall and take care of the consumer, but are reluctantly ignoring the issue and taking the consumers for granted. It's hard for me to turn around and spend $150.00 more dollars to repair an expensive known faulty system. What should I/we do?

I had purchased my Sony Playstation 3 just under two years ago. I took more than extra good care of it due to the fact the 60 GB version is a rare find and has 100 percent backwards compatibility plus memory slots. Anyway, I keep my entire house as dust free as I can, keep my PS3 well ventilated, and keep it on a stable surface.
I have pumped well over one hundred dollars into the Sony Playstation Video store and well over 1000 dollars in games. It is all a giant pile of worthless garbage at this point because my Playstation got the well known and documented Yellow Light of Death. Microsoft was forced into extending the warranty of their product, and I feel sony should do the same. I had talked to multiple Customer Service Reps trying to get it fixed for free, but all they say is, "This is a well known problem and you will have to send it in for service. That will be 149 dollars." That is simply unnacceptable to me.

My playstation 3 that I purchased either december 2007 or january 2008 is no longer reading discs or ejecting discs. An enormous amount of other people with the same model playstation 3 as I (CECHE01) are having the EXACT same issue. My product is about 4 months outside sonys one year manufacturers warranty and they want $149 to repair it.

Someone hacked my son's playstation account and ordered a game, sony charged my credit card 9.99. My son was asleep and the playstation was off. I have call sony and they wont refund my monies. I have researched the internet and have read that sony somehow stores credit card numbers from previous purchases, as my son deletes all credit card numbers as soon as purchases are complete.

I asked Sony Reps why does UK have this plan and US customers don't? Both the rep and supervisor can just say, different regions. I had asked them ifyou were in my shoes and you know of this plan, would this make you mad and would you want the same thing? they both replied "yes". It's such a known issue, thats why 60gigs models are not being sold anymore, why wasn't there a recall to have these units replace or fixed?? The UK has a reasonable solution but here in the US, wehave to pay $150 ?!?!

Sony is playing with us customers of original 20GB and 60GB PS3. These original consoles are having problems due to overheating since day 1 of birth November 16, 2006. The consoles will last 1 to 3 years if you are lucky. I purchase an original PS3 for $600.00 the first week of play I notice that my PS3 was hot; I called Sony 3 weeks later and stated that my PS3 is only 3 weeks old and it blowing hot air. They told me its normal because of the processors, for the past 2 1/2 years owning my PS3 it finally gave up on me. Symptoms I would power up my PS3 normal green light, then flash to yellow very fast then the red blinking light of death.
My PS3 never came back on, it even eight my Killzone 2 game as well because will not eject the game. So I called Sony again and told them the symptoms of the Green, Yellow, and Blinking Red light and they told me that is because it over heated. Sony asks me to ship it for repair and told me that it would cost me $150.00 to fix. I told them that I call them 3 weeks after I purchase my PS3 and told them about the overheating problem and that they told me that it was normal,
Sony customer support told me well we cannot help you so you would have to pay $150.00 after repair and they also wanted my hard drive with 2 1/2 of game play and content that I play very hard to get. Sony also stated that this is a 10 year life console. My $600.00 is my lost. And Sony know that the original consoles had problems but they never told us what it was that's why Sony came up with many different PS3 models. I worked so hard to get this console witch I'm still paying for it by credit... At a 22% Interest

They stopped working. I checked the boxes and noticed FOR SALE IN JAPAN ONLY on the box.
The manual was a photocopied one and other papers and the box all in Japanese. NO accessories at all aand they were supposed to be included.
The shop said "OH no madame they are sold as they are"
After visiting a lawyer here I wrote a registered lettre to the shop demanding our money back. Of course no answer. It is under the one year warranty BUT the States won't repair japanese models and I haven't found an address in Japan.Ths store wont do anything.
I found a website where Sony sued a distributor for selling FOR SALE IN JAPAN ONLY. I had to pay an extra $80 for the memory sticks that should have been included. What to do now?

My son purchased a playstation 3 in july 2007 after saving all his pocket money for 3 years last December it broke down and took it to mambra to fix it but they said they would have to send it to Italy to be fixed Its now almost the end of April and still have not recieved it they offered my son a 40 gig but we paid for a 60 gig in Malta the gurantee is for 2 years I spoke to a mehul sony in europe but he told me the local agent here should give me a replacement but I phoned them twice and they told me to contact Mambra my son is now 15 and a special needs child and he is so upset that he has been treated like this please can you help us

I purchased a Sony Playstaion 3 on 9/30/07. I recenntly bought a game called Resident Evil 5. The game comes on a disc. The disc had a version update on it ( ver.2.52) I loaded the update and played RE5 for an hour. I turned the game off. I came back 20 minutes later and the system would not play any discs, no games, no cd's, no dvd's. I called the support hotline and talked to a fellow named Jason. He explained to me I was out of warranty and I would have to send the system in for repair for $150. I told him I didnt have the money and could they waive the fee. He gave me a couple of things to try and said if they didn't work the fee could get waived.
I tried the troubleshooting tips and they didnt work.I called back and got another operator named Blake and explained everything to him and he said theres no way to send in the system without paying the fee. I have since been online and seen many many people are having the same problem as me with the same results as me. Sony wants the $150 to fix a known problem and I think this is absoluely ridiculous.I have been going back and forth with them via e-mail and Ive had enough. Please help.
I have a $650 paperweight. I cant play any games or cd's or dvd's.

Playstation 3 is no different that 2. It stopped playing movies in the first couple months. We bought the 3 and within a couple months had to send it back to the company for repairs. They did not want to except the warrenty but finally did. Now it has stopped working again with a 60 dollars game inside. They want 150 dollars to repair it. Again. They want that money before they even send you a box.
This is a 400 dollar machine. If a t.v or a washing machine broke down. Someone would cause a fit. These machines need to last longer than a few months. Someone needs to be held accountable. Where in Sacramento can we take it to for repairs, that won't rip you off?

My ps3 quit reading disc and upon contacting sony they stated that since my warranty was up that it would cost me $149.00 to repair. I believe that there is a fault in there product hardware because i have read forum after forum of people with the same problem. Each one of those persons has to fork over the 149 if there are out of warranty. Sony will not admit a problem with the system but there is obviously a problem.
SO many people have the same problem. Microsoft had a glitch in their system and the had to accept responsibility and repair it for free. I feel that there is enough people with the same problem that merits a further investigation. i feel as though it is a way to give sony some extra money. unit does not work

My ps3 does not read any type of blu-ray disks. I get the following errors when I watch a movie, 80029906 & 80010514. As for games it just freezes in the middle. After reading many threads on this issue, there appears to be zero rhyme or reason why this is happening. I will end up calling sony today and getting a replacement. I have a 60 gb model, and being how lucky I am to have one in the first place, I am willing to lay odds that I will not get a 60gb, back. I think it is absolutely ridiculous to have to pay $150 dollars to fix it. I have no receipt since I purchased it back early 2007. I am very frustrated with this issue, and what appears to be a lack of acknowledgment of the problem on sony's end.

The playstation 3 quits reading all disks. When contacting Sony they are aware of the problem and as long as your unit is under warranty you get the problem fixed for free. This is a known problem with the blue ray reader, which is affected by dust and moisture causing the system to not work. Sony being aware of this is punishing customers who have a warranty expire and then have the problem arise. This looks to be the same type of problem the PS2 had which has a class action suit against Sony. I have read many internet sites with other customers who are just as unhappy and frustrated with this system and company. They should have another suit brought against them and I would love to help out with this matter.
I am being told I have to pay $150 to have sony fix a problem it is aware of. Since my unit went out of warranty a month before this problem surfaced I am now having to send the unit in if I want it to work again. I have yet to do this.

we purchased a Sony Playstation 3 approximately two years ago. When we insert the disc to play the game. The unit freezes and an error code 80010514 displays on the screen and you are not able to play. We sent the Playstation to the service department and they informed my boyfriend that we need to send $150.00 in order for them to repair the Playstation the Warranty has expired.
I explained to them that this error code has nothing to do with the warranty and if i did send in the $150.00 i was told they would replace the playstation with a factory unit and i explained to them i want my playstation repaired/replaced however, i will not pay $150.00 when there is an issue with the system itself and the way the playstation was built.
The playstation that we sent in for service is in perfect condition. Again, I paid $600.00 for this playstation two years ago and demand that they repair/replace this playstation 3.

Sony has shown a pattern of charging customers for service of failing Blu-ray drives in there PS3 units similar to the situation with Microsoft and the infamous PPOD (red rings of death).
$150.00 per unit per customer with millions of units sold.

Playstation 3 won't read my disc. I placed a Blu-Ray disc in the drive and it won't read. I skimmed through Internet forums and googled the issue and it seems to be #1 reason PS3 systems go bad.
The system cost $399 and I had the machine for about 13 months. They are asking $150 to replace the machine.

I emailed them an explain that my ps3 was not showing any picture when I played my bluerays. I get sound but no picture. The games play good but not the movies. I restored it and went into settings and still no picture for movies. Please help me. I have a whole bunch a bluerays that I can't watch.

I purchased a Sony Playstation 3 in May of 2008 from Walmart. In February 2009 it stopped working. I returned it to sony and was told that the warranty was void and i would have to pay 150.00 to repair the unit
The item was returned and it was obvious that their technician had opened the unit

i bought my son a playstation 3 for his b day. it only worked for 4 months and now it will not play any games. my son is so upset. I need to have it fixed. it just stoped reading disks

My ps3 had yellow light of death after two years of use
I have to get 150 dollars to fix a system i payed over 600 dollars for

I bought a 60 GB PlayStation 3 on February 17 2007 i got it for about $630.00 and like a 1 year and 10 months I got the yellow light of death. Now my PS3 doesn't work and I have my game stuck inside.I called Sony and they are charging $150.00 to repair it and they don't know why this happen to my PS3.
I feel like i wasted almost $700.00 on a piece of junk and i think it is unfair that i have to pay $150.00 to fix my system that didn't even last me 2 years.

I had a problem With my playstation 3 game, i sent the game over to sony service center for repairs with my credit card charge and about a week later the system was sent back to me without the hard drive. immediately informed sony customer service about the problem and they confirmed that the technicians had forgot to place the hard drive on the game and they replace it with a new within 7-10 business days.
on saturday march 7th i called to confirm the status of the hard drive but now changed their iniatial agreement and this type refuse to send it back to me after their investigation that i wasn't aware of, and also WILL NOT REFUND MY MONEY($157.85) and there is nothing they could do. so i am helpless, i feel like i have been robbed by Sony entertainment of America.
Money($157.85) NOT REFUNDED, for services that wasn't performed on thier part as a consultant.

I'm like so many of the other people on this site that had their Playstation 3 break down on them with the (YLOD) which stands for Yellow Light Of Death. It's been happening to almost everone that owns a Sony 60 gig PS3 and most of this or all is happening to the 60 gig models. This seems unacceptable and Sony's warranty for only 1 year doesn't justify it also charging a hefty $150.00 for a repair that is a little over the warranty period. Sony because of this problem should extend there warranty like Microsoft X-Box did when people got the red ring of death on that system.
This seems mostly like a manufacturing defect that at fault from Sony. It's happened to too many people and the warranty and $150.00 out of warranty price tag to repair it is totally unjustifialbe to me and everyone else and Consumer Affairs should get Sony to recall or extend their warranty for 3 yrs. and bring that out of warranty price tag down.
The Yellow Light Of Death is similar to the 3 rings of death that Microsoft X-Box had before Microsoft extended their warranty. What happens with the (YLOD) is the system tries to turn on (with green light for 1 second) then turns (to yellow light for a split second) before immediately turning off with a (flashing red light). So basically the unit tries to turn on and immediately shuts off. This is caused either buy overheating or a bad power supply or faulty motherboard, CPU, or something else faulty in the manufacturing process.
Like I said a blunder in the process in manufacturing and I'm another one of the angry dissatisfied consumers to all others who have posted here on this site because of this problem. This is Sony's fault for not making a superior product.

please write back soon as you can.... I am addicted to fifa games.... cannot wait for so long.

Bought my son PS3 for christmas 2007 & christmas 2008 he got 5 ps3 games and on December 27,2008 PS3 quits working because fault lazer there are thousands apon thousands of people haveing same problem. But Sony said they only have 1% failure rate? I not a math genius but this does not add up It sounds like to me its a 100% failure rate and Sony does not want to fix the problem. I paid $499.00 dollars for mine.
Because they can charge you another $150.00 dollars to fix your system. And even if you had 8 months left on 1st systems warranty the refurbished system you now get only have 90 days. So am I the only person that sees the wrong in this. Sony needs to step up and fix these issues

I purchased a sony playstation 3 for $399.00. After additionally buying over $200 worth of games and a $60 headset I was happy to get my gaming experience put in action. But by December of 2008(a year and two months after purchasing the system), I found out that my system fell victim to the infamous yellow light of death, the first thing I did was go online to find out what happened, why my system would refuse to turn on. I found that google had over 267,000 hits on the subject of people who are having the same issue, yet no one knows why this occurs, or how to fix it.
I called sony to possibly get help on fixing it, and all they told me was that they only have a one year warranty and in order for them to fix my problem I have to send them $150.00. I asked the rep why I had to pay such a large amount to fix something that 270,000 people are having the same problem with, and he told me that its the way it works. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. I went on to tell him that no one knows why its happening to their system but it seems as if sony is sending out poor quality products, and he told me all he can do is send me a form to send my system is for a $150 repair.
I dont understand why sony is getting away with this...XBOX helped their consumers for free, yet sony wants to charge us almost half of what we paid for the system, so they can fix their poor quality products? Of course my system just happened to malfunction two months after the year warranty expired, so I asked him how long the warranty would be after they fixed my system? His reply was 90 days. Then I went on to ask him what if the system has the same problem after the 90 days? His reply you will have to send it in with $150.00 to have it repaired again.
I dont understand why nothing is being done about the way sony is scamming its customers, the Xbox red ring of death was handled, why is sony being overlooked? You can search google, yahoo, even Youtube, and the results for the yellow light of death will just keep rising. Please, we beg you, can someone please stop sony and put an end to this scam they are running?
My father and I have just lost our jobs, my mother is the only one with an income right now in a house of 5 occupants, I feel so stupid now for buying the junk sony put on the shelves, that $600-700.00 could have been used to help feed my family, instead, its in sony's pockets, and now their asking me for more.

My ps3 system stopped playing games and dvds after upgrading the firmware to 2.42 which i had to do because games would only play to a certain point. then a screen would flash across the screen saying upgrade now, there is no way of getting off this screen other than doing the upgrade. so i did this and within an hour of the upgrade my games started freezing then wouldnt register on the disc drive,
it took me forever to save up for my system and cant afford to pay for it to be fixed. i know i didnt break it. the upgrade did. so why should i pay to fix somthing sony broke. help what do i do
350 for the system 150 for games. 40 new controller. all that i cant use

When I bought my son his original PS3 from Best Buy, I also purchased the warrantee. When the harddrive went out, Best Buy replaced it as promised. We now realize that the new models being produced DO NOT play any PS2 games as originally touted by Sony when the PS3 was first released. I feel this is some sort of fraud and I am VERY unhappy. What are we to do with all the PS2 games he got for Christmas that he has never gotten to play and all the games he had prior to the exchange? I am at a loss. This feels very wrong to me.
We have four to five hundred dollars of PS2 games that are useless to us.

I on launch day purchased a ps3 20 gb gaming console now after only 1 year and like 9 months the item is faulty and have done some research and found that many other people are having the same issues and some have had these issues shortly after the 1 year warranty. now as for me it has taken longer to malfunction because i dont play it that much. i have only a 100 or so hours on it and now not only is it malfunctioning but i dont feel that these items are safe. as for mine the right side of this item within 10 mins is extremely hot and if left on could possibly burn some one and if left on and unattended maybe even cause a fire
i called sony and explained to them my issue and they told me that it could be replaced at 160.00 dollars. so i paid 600 for it new barely used it and now they want another 160.00. they also claim this is unheard of yet all over the internet and forums they are talking about the same issues. also go on ebay and there are tons of these things on there for parts. so to say that this is not a known issue is a out right lie and just like Microsoft some one needs to step in and see what is going on.
people spen there hard earned money on these expensive items to relieve stress only to have it become a major form of stress watching it break and 500 dollars plus the amount you spend in games go right out the window. please look into this. look on ebay and see what i mean these thing s are selling in lots 4-6 at a time all with the same issues
This was a waste of well over 1500 dollars while you count the machine and the 15 games at 60 dollars a piece and controllers. not only that but do we have to wait till someone does get burned to make them fix these issues

I own a Playstation 3, purchased for $499. This gaming system is basically a computer, but the warranty only covers hardware failure for one year. After that period they charge $150 to refurbish the system, and THEN the warranty given is only 90 days. Complete ripoff, makes no sense to purchase an expensive device if the company doesn't even cover problems for at least 2 years.
I have no choice but to purchase a brand new ps3 system, and sell a broken ps3 on ebay for less than $100. New ps3, $499-$100= $399, and at least I get a one year warranty, and I plan on selling the system when the warranty is almost done.

I purchased a Playstation 3 on 01/04/08. This past weekend (02/13/09-02/15/09), I discovered that my PS3's blu ray drive had failed. It would accept any disc, ie: DVD, Blu Ray, or Game. It would also eject them. Unfortunately, it failed to recognize any of them. Once loaded, a tiny circle appeared on the screen on the television's upper-right-hand-side. This circle appeared to spin, but no other action occurred. I remembered that I had saved the PS3's original box, hoping that I still had my receipt tucked away inside of it. I did, but unfortunately for me, I found out that I was out of warranty.
I then placed a call to S.C.E.A. The representative was a complete gentleman but said that my issue would have to be resolved through Sony's web site. He quickly emailed me a link, which is where I found out the bad news: Sony must deal with my issue a lot, as they have a dedicated link or drop-down menu for just such a problem. Unfortunately, they want an additional $149 to fix the problem if your PS3 is out of warranty, ie: greater than 12 months old.
Considering the premium price PS3 owners have paid for their gaming console/blu ray player, I find this charge to be extremely steep, specially considering that this problem appears to be a common occurrence on PS3 and/or gaming forums. Can't we all, as consumers, trust that the premium price we paid for the Sony brand will get what we paid for? I pay a premium price for Apple products, too, but at least those last for more than 13 months.

I just wanted to state how dissapointed I am with sony. [They] should be ashamed. [They] ruined the PS 3. I recently bought one at Best Buy, and it irritated me so much that it was not backward compatible, I returned it. Also the fact the extra usb and misc ports in front were removed. When they first came out the were perfect, and I can not find one of those models around anywhere. I have many ps2 games and play FFXI, which requires PS2, so it looks like time to buy and X-BOX 360. Very dissapointed...and many others feel the same way.

broken playstation 3 barely used and now it is over heating and doent work have done some research and found that this is a major problem with alot of people and need to be addressed as for the address i was unable to obtain it anywhere onthere website or any paper work i currently have sorry.

My PS3's Blu Ray drive failed in Oct. 08 I purchased it on 11-23-07 I still have my receipt. I was living somewhere temporary when it failed so I waited to get it fixed. And now Sony refuses to fix it. I have called twice. They expect me to pay 150 dollars to get it fixed. The funny thing is I also bought a Playstation 2 which also broke and they refused to fix it then too.

PS3~ this machine is not worth the $ they are charging for it. first off i got the machine. so excited to use it i bought one of my favorite games - Ratchet&Clank weapons of destruction. so i put it in. doesnt work. i take the game back to game crazy and they test it on their machine - of course it works. game crazy says we cant return it because it works. so i call sony.
they say well you need to get on line and download a game then delete it. im not on the internet so then they say well you will need to download cd's etc and use up 500 megabite or gigabites of space then delete it then the game should start. told them this is so much work for a consumer to do. one should jus get the game, pop it in and viola play. but no! so i download 3 music cd's and i started playing another game heaven's sword then i checked jus to see if possibly Ratchet&clank will work. sho nuff it worked. i didnt haf to delete anything it jus worked once i used up so much space. ok then i had purchased prince of persia i go to put it in. wont work! come to find out my ps3 needs to be updated to latest software. again something you need to do with the internet which im not on at home. so i call game crazy.
im at this point so frustrated. so the store manager told me to bring my ps3 into the store and he on his lap top upgraded my ps3. so for those out there to know the ps3 is a computer. its not the most friendliest thing at first. oh its important to have it plugged into a surge protector. or you will hear the ps3 make strange grinding noises like its trying to clear its throat. my ps2 was not an issue, dream cast was fun, ps1 was great and my xbox is still going strong. because of my ps3 issues im still waiting on hooking the wii up.
ps3 is working after all that. but i wish i knew what i was getting myself into prior purchasing.

In December 2007, I purchased an 80g Sony Playstaion 3 for $499.00. The last week in January 2009, I sat down to watch a movie and 15 minutes after the movie started playing, my system froze and I received an error code of 80029940 and another of 80029941. I tried for 2 hours to get the system to play a movie and a game and it would only play for 10-15 miuntes at a time and then freeze again. I did everything Sony suggested I do, power off the system, reset the system, etc., but none of these supposed solutions corrected the issue.
Since the system is out of the warranty by one month, I am being told I have to send the PS3 back to Sony for repair at a cost of $150.00. Everything I have read says that the lens that reads the blue-ray disk goes out and it seems to happen more frequently to customers who play a specific game (Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty : World at War). There also seems to be no specific time frame as this problem is happening to systens as new as a few months old by some accounts. I have done a lot of research that leads me to believe this error is a manufatures defect.
I also feel that due to the overwhelming number of people this is happening to, this is an issue that should have been known about and fixed prior to releasing this product. It is rediculous that consumers spend $300.00 - $500.00 on a gaming/blue-ray system from Sony, a company that is supposed to be in the the upper echelon of the electronics industry, only to have it break down with in a year. Further more, to say that the only solution to the problem is to send the product into Sony and pay an additional $150.00 is a slap in the face to loyal customers who have purchased Sony products for decades. I am considering never purchasing a Sony product angain and will urge everyone I speak with to do the same.
Addtiional cost of $150.00 to fix the issue.

I purchased a Sony Playstation 3 back in December 2006. The first time taking it out of the box and hooking it up I had a problem. I put in a game which never displayed onto the television and the system made weird sounds. I couln't even eject the game out of the system. I contacted Sony and they sent me out a prepaid box to ship the console back to them to determine if they could repair the system. The system was unrepairable so they sent me a new system and a new game.Sony had no choice because it was still covered under the 1 year warranty.
Now here I am in December 2008, 2 years after my first problem. I go to play a game and the same thing occurs. The game will not display on the television but I am able to eject it. I contact Sony and tell them my problem. They told me that theres a problem with the system and we are going to send you aprepaid box to ship it to us. This time the warranty is expired passed one year and I have to pay Sony $159.43 to look and reair the system. So I ship it out to sony.
The system is returned back to me a week later. The actual date 1/7/09. I take system out of the box and hook it up and the problem still exhists. Theres a letter in the box with the system that says, please retain this for your records and for warranty purposes. Enclosed you will have either your factory certified replacement or you same console repaired unit. thank you for your patronage. I call Sony back that same day of receiving the repaired system that was really never repaired. The represenative apologizes for the mishap and wants me to send the system back again so they can repair right.
So sent the system back again I received it today (2/2/09) back from Sony. This time theres a letter saying, Product service (exchange or repair) not authorized. Below that they are claiming The product shows physical abuse or misuse, neglect, excessive wear and tear. My system was never dropped, mishandled, or etc. I call Sony and speak to a supervisor who tells me theres nothing they can do to fix the system thers corrosion in the system. I ask him what do mean by corrosion in the system? I don't know this is what it states from the repair service shop. I tell him the system costed my wife $500.00 and the system was put in a place where no physical damage would come to the system. I the tell him why wasn't I informed this the first time I sent the system for repair? He claims he doesn't know why and there is nothing we can do. I honestly believe there is a flaw with the PS3 and Sony is not taking responsibility for there product.
I have a system (Playstation 3) I paid $500.00 for and now another $159.43 for repairs and Sony is claiming that there is nothing they can do to fix the system. And they are blaming me for abuse and misuse. I own an xbox 360 which is older than my paystation 3 and I have never encountered a single problem with it. Sony should take on the resposibility of either fixing my system or replacing it.

We purchased a launch 60gb PS3 for our kids in August of 2007 and died January of 2009 because of the YLoD. It appears now that this condition is the predominant issue (along with blu ray drive defect) afflicting early launch PS3. I have two issues with Sony with this predicament. 1. The warranty is not on par with the cost of purchase (well over a thousand dollars to include accessories, games, blu ray movies) although I understand it is within the standard. 2. The difficulty imposed upon the consumer to obtain repair service i.e., proof of purchase, the cost to obtain out of warranty service but the most unsatisfactory in my opinion, is the 90 day warranty given on the refurb unit.
1. It is a known fact in the consumer world that Sony products are one of the most if not the most expensive product outside of the esoteric ones that caters to the rich and famous. Included in the expense is the Sony name that once stood for quality and longevity to name a few. It is also a known fact that the PS3 is the most expensive game console console out there. 2. Proof of purchase required for in-warranty service. When I called the customer service, I informed them that the receipt was nowhere to be found at present but that unit was registered online for that very purpose. I was told that without the receipt,
I will have to pay $150 (plus tax and shipping). I ask them if there is some way they can help me out by accessing their database to obtain my online warranty and I was told that they do not have the means to do that which I find hard to believe. It is their domain and what purpose does it serve other than what appears now as a waste of my time and every one else' who chose this route to register their unit. Regardless, I am now looking at paying the fee (found the receipt and unit is out of warranty) with no guarranty that the replacement will not breakdown outside of the 90 day window that comes with the refurb. My online search revealed that some owners complained that their replacement broke down again within a very short period of time and some were faced with another $150 repair bill because the 90 day warranty have expired. Here is a classic consumer rip off if ever there is one.
This issue with my kid's PS3 is specially painful for me because of the faith, trust and money invested not only with their product but also in their stock. I feel I have been betrayed out of my loyalty to the brand. Over the years, we spent a lot of money on all sorts of Sony product from tv, game consoles, amplifier, dvd/cd/mini disc/8mm/cassette/in car dash players (the ones we still own, I can provide model and serial number as proof) regardless of the price tag because we know we are getting our money's worth. After all, we are buying a Sony. Not anymore.
Unless Sony reverses their policy, admit that there is something wrong with the PS3 (especially the first generation) that can only be attributed to faulty design and make it right for their customers; the brand is dead as far as I'm concern. In contrast, Microsoft did the right thing by repairing the equally faulty XBOX 360 for free and providing an additional 12 months warranty on the refurb. As it stands, the money we invested not only on the PS3 but also in their stock is literally and figuratively up in smoke. The PS3 is now nothing more than a dust collector.

i have brought a lot of sony electronic equipment fron all the playstations to cd players, tv's, car stereos and subs and amps ect and had no problems with anything but i brought a station 3 last christmas 2007 and i have just had loads of problems crashing and now it keeps reading disk error but because its a month or 2 out of warrenty i have got to pay out again after paying 450 origionaly for something that shouldnt of happened.
i am very dissapointed in this console and will know be looking towards an x box or wii

My playstation 3 has only one year and a month and is not working properly, simply doesn't read any disc, i wrote to playstation warranty to check and they told me that is only one year warranty, of course a 500 hundred dollars system, one year and its not working, a $150 bucks to fix it. yeah right, this is not fair, its time to someone do something about it.
a lot of work to buy the system for only one year.

I bought my Sony Playstation 3 the day it came out in November of 2006. Just this week, while playing my video game for nearly 20 minutes, my console turned off without warning. The power indicator went from green to yellow to red and remained blinking. This problem is known as the yellow light of death. I called Sony's customer service line the very next day. The rep told me that it could be an overheating problem . He then said that he could look into the problem but it would cost me 169.00 CAD (approx. 190.00 with Canadian tax) to get it repaired, since it was out of warranty. I understand that my console is over two years old I get it, but what I don't get is how can the repair cost me almost HALF the price of a NEWER, BETTER model. My console is the launch model, and it's notoriously common for launch models to be defective.
When I disagreed to pay that amount for a repair and explained to him that this was a common issue among Playstation 3 users, he said that it was the first time he had heard about it. Google alone has about 97 000 hits for Yellow Light of Death PS3. How can Sony simply ignore this problem? Stating that I was unsatisfied with his resolution, I requested to speak with his supervisor. She was no different. She wouldn't even listen to my problem; rather, she immediately said that I would have to pay the fee in order to get it fixed. She said Sony customers were LUCKY to even get a warranty because the company could've easily sold the product without any coverage. How is that good customer service? She definitely didn't convince me that I made a good investment by opting to choose Sony. In fact she only made matters worse and took all my trust out of Sony.
Unsatisfied with her resolution I requested to speak to HER supervisor. The man was a bit more understanding but equally unhelpful. He said rules are rules, and he couldn't help me. I explained to him that I didn't mind paying for it to be repaired, but that I didn't find it reasonable or logical to pay almost 200.00 for it, especially when that is half the price of a newer, better model. Unable to help me, and unwilling to understand my frustration he offered to take my number down and have HIS supervisor call me, but reminded me that his supervisor would tell me the exact same thing.
If I were to go with the out of warranty option and pay the 190.00 to get it fixed, my console would only be covered for 90 days. However, I could still run the risk of having this problem again, which would eventually lead me back to square one. I saved a lot to purchase this system. 600.00+190.00+ 500.00 (on games I currently own) is a lot of money invested into Sony. I feel like I've been cheated and that Sony is not taking care of its customers, especially the ones that waited in line for hours in the cold to get the highly marketed console. Do you any advice on my next steps?

i had my game system for not even a month and i went to play it one day and it didnt work. so i called the playstation people, and they sent ,me a box to send to them so i sent my game and it took 8 days and when i got it back it was not fixed tehy said it was the warranty seal, but when we fixed it everything was on there. and when we got it back the side piece to the hardrive was missing and the screw to hold it and the thing where the warranty seal was.and now they say we have to pay 150.00 to get it fixed but were not paying because they didnt want to do there job. if we have to we will sue sony for everything they have.please help us. this will be 500.00 gone to waste.
they did not fix the game so now i have nothing to play and i have to pay 150.00 to get it fixed.

My Playstation 3 died due to hardware failure. Looking around many people are having this same problem and is occuring right after the one year warantee is expired. I bought mine July 2007 and it broke January 2009. The repair cost is an astronomical $170 CAD.

Sony did not replace my playstation 3 free of charge after I faced a very broad issue known as YloD which doesn't let you turn the ps3 on. This issue usually happens 1 year after the warranty expires. In Europe Sony will replace the PS3 even when out of warranty, but the same is not happening here in US.
I feel that the $600 I paid for the PS3 should be enough to assure the machine would last more than 2 years. Now I have to pay Sony another $150 to get it fixed.

I received a PS3 as a xmas present in Dec '06 and I received the YLOD in Jan '09 (just 2 years after it was given to me). I would classify myself as a PS3 fanboy, but with how Sony is fixing the YLOD problem is ridiculous. PS3 is making their financial ends meet with a $149 fee to fix a hardware issue. Apparently, the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death) occurs mostly in the first generation playstations (which of course I have). When the XBOX360 had their RROD (Red Ring of Death) they extended all the XBOX warranties from 1 year to 3 years. Playstation has extended generation 1 playstation3 warranties from 1 year to 1 1/2 years! How pathetic!

i am complaining about a game made for my kids playstation2. the game was called guitar hero. we bought the game plus on extra guitar for it. they opened x-mas morning we hooked it up and it didnt work. we waited till the next day to return it for another one this time we went to janesville to return it and exchange it. we got it home agian hooked it up and agian it didnt work. it was the one thing besided the playstation 3 that they wanted for x-mas. we ended up returning it agian but this time just getting our money back.
now our situation is we came close to no x-mas at all as to my life threating accident and i am diabled now and only my husband works but we scrapped enough to bye this game for my 2 kids. well since niether game worked you can imagine what type of x-mas my kids had im amd very sad and disapointed in this event. we know we hooked it up properly as well and as we were returning it the second time the man at the counter had told us that a few others had to return the same game because something on it didnot work. this make me wonder about sony in the future.
our playstation worked with ever other game we owned but guitar hero always came up with disc erro and did nothing.

Bought Sony Playstation 2 and Rock Band for Christmas. Rock Band will not play on the PS2. I have called RockBand Support and Sony. Sony said to wait and they will create a patch, RockBand said it has to do with the PS2 serial numbers and the layered RockBand disk not playing on PS2. I am very disappointed as my family are not gamers and this is our first game system, and we are having problems. I will try to return both to the store, but since they are opened, i'm not counting on that.

Had a defective PS3 which was still under warantee. Sony sent me a box which I used shipped the PS3 to their repair center. After over a month of not hearing any word I called sony to find out the status. I was told that my PS3 could not be repaired and that I should be receiving a refurbished unit in the mail. A week later after not receiving anything in the mail and no word from Sony, I called them back to check on the status once again. They told me I would need to call MTC (the repair center).
I called MTC who told me there was liquid damage to the motherboard and they'd be sending me back the damaged PS3. The PS3 has been sitting in my TV stand for it's entire duration and there is no way any liquid was spilled on it unless it happened during shipping or during the month and a half it had been sitting at the repair center. I called Sony back and explained that I wasn't happy that I'd be receiving a non-working PS3 and that I had not spilled any liquid on it. I explained that there had been a month and a half since I had originally sent the PS3 in, and how could they be sure that it hadn't been sitting in a moist room or that someone at the repair center hadn't made a mistake as they had already made the mistake of ignoring me for over a month. Anyways, I was told that nothing could be done for me.
I have nothing left to view or play any of my blu-ray discs or PS3 games without buying a new PS3, which will cost me $400

We bought our Sony PlayStation 2 Console (#79001 silver slimline)for Christmas as a gift to our son in 2007. No problems what so ever until this Christmas when our son wanted Guitar Hero World Tour to complete his collection of all the Guitar Hero games. Put the new game in the console Christmas day, and didn't work.
We took the game back to WalMart where we purchased it, and they opened up the new game in the store, said it was in perfect condition, and if it didn't work this time I couldn't return it. Brought it home...it didn't work. The PS2 console works great for all other games. After many hours of frustration and watching my son in tears, I started doing some online investigating, and found there are thousands of other people with the same exact problem, and no solution.
With all the complaints on PS2 and Guitar Hero World Tour, Sony and Activision must have known about this problem for sometime, but are not doing anything about it. WHY??? Something has to be done. THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!! To see my son in tears is bad enough, but now I'm stuck with a $40 game I can't use, or take back to the store to even exchange for another game!! Sony/Activision...PLEASE GET THIS RESOLVED!!!!! I WANT A GAME THAT WORKS!!
I'm out $40 for a game that does not work. I can't return it for exchange or refund either. This was our son's main Christmas gift. His Christmas was ruined, and we can't afford to buy a different game for him.

To Whom It May Concern:
I purchased a Sony Plastation 3 (20 gig) bundle pack at Gamestop.com back in November 2006. The system performed beautifully for about a year and a half. It played PS3 games at 1080i, Blu-Ray movies in 1080i, PS2 games, DVDs and CD-Rs flawlessly.
Unfortunately, after about a year and a half, the picture became black when media was inserted into the PS3. In other words, when a PS3 game, Blu-Ray disc, DVD was inserted into the disc tray the disc would load and the audio would play but the video signal would freeze then turn black. I never hooked up my PS3 to the web, I did not change component cables, and I did not change anything on my HD television.Of course my warranty had expired so I had to pay Sony $150.00 to get my PS3 serviced. This is after I paid Sony $1,000.00 for the PS3, one controller and 4 games back in November 2006. Anyway, Sony supplied me with a box to pack up my PS3 to ship back for service.
Sony shipped back my PS3 on September 26, 2008. Unfortunately, the same problems were still present. Again, PS3 games, Blu-Ray discs and DVDs all resulted in a black screen after a few seconds of loading but the audio continued to work properly. To my dismay I had to call Sony again. Fortunately, I did not have to pay Sony an additional $150.00 for service this time.
How frustrating! This was the second time in less than a month that my PS3 had been sent for service. It was as if someone had opened the box, stared at it for 5 minutes then immediately repacked it and shipped it. .
It took me a few minutes to convince the Sony representative that I had in fact received my PS3 from Sony service and it still did not work properly. Finally, I was issued a new service request number and Sony shipped me another box to send out my PS3 for service.Sony shipped me a brand new PS3 on October 22, 2008. I was also supplied with a 90 day warranty on the new PS3. Finally, I could play PS3 gamess, watch Blu-Rays and DVDs again. Alas, just one day before my warranty expired, the PS3 froze up during gameplay and would no longer recognize any type of media after rebooting. Even after formatting the drive then updating to the newest firmware, the PS3 would still not recognize any type of media.
To my utter disappointment, I contacted Sony yet again to issue me a new service request number and a shipping box to send back the now defective new? PS3. This is now the THIRD TIME in FOUR MONTHS I have had a PS3 in service. And it looks like I will be on my THIRD PS3. My patience is at an end.
To say that this experience has been aggravating is quite an understatement. My frustration has escalated to pure anger and resentment. How many more times am I going to have to go through this routine to keep a working PS3 in my house? Can Sony Computer Entertainment of America not manufacture a fully functional product that will last longer than ninety days? What is going to happen when this third? PS3 dies on day ninety-one of the warranty? Will I be asked to pay and additional $150 to get the third? PS3 serviced/replaced? Does the PS3 (20 gig) have a substationally higher fail rate than the PS3 (80 gig) or the PS3 (120 gig)? Would I be better off in buying a PS3 (80 gig or 120 gig) at retail? Do I need to obtain legal council?Maybe this time (though not likely) the problems with my PS3 could EFFECTIVELY be FIXED FOR GOOD. This is totally ridiculous! Are you kidding me? Three separate service times in four months! I am not sure what the protocols are for the Sony PS3 service department, but there are obviously a lot of issues that need remedied.

Bought Guitar Hero World Tour that was advertised to work with the PS2. However, the system did not work because the PS2 was an older model. Nothing in the advertisement stated it would not work with older models.
A Christmas gift that cost $190 is now sitting idle and unusable. There is the option of paying an addition $45 to get a refurbished PS2 from the company. What a scam!

I originally purchased a playstation 3 in july of 2008. I also purchased a replacement plan with the unit. In October of 2008 the unit began to malfunction and i sent it back. I received a unit (refurbished) three weeks later. The unit that I received was faulty because it had a loose part moving-around the inside of the unit so i sent it back (before the Thanksgiving holiday).
The second week of December I called to follow up on my replacement. The rep that I spoke with told me i was to receive a Gift-card in 1-week because the unit is back-ordered. I call back a week later (3rd week of December) to follow-up on the gift card and the rep I spoke to told me that the Gift-card was denied and I was to receive a replacement unit in 1-week. I called back on the 29th of December and was told that they would have a shipping-date for me on the 2nd of January. I called this morning and now they have told me that the unit is on back-order and they do not have a date for me. I requested for my money to be refunded and they do not want to warrant Time as grounds for a refund.
This has caused anxiety and stress levels to rise!

My son was playing the PS 3 on Tuesday night, December 30, 2008. It is the 80 GB model. The machine just cut off during play and has not worked since. The PS3 is in our upstairs bonus room. We tried several times to reset it by unplugging it but it does the same thing everytime. It goes to a green light, the a yellow flashing light and finally a red flashing light. I have researched this online and have learned this appears to be a common problem with several PS3 consoles however there is no fix except to pay $150.00 to Sony for a refurbished replacement console.
The PS3 was purchased on November 16, 2007 online at BestBuy. It has been in use for only a year. I called Sony Customer Service on Jan 1, 2009 and was told my machine is out of warranty and they would send a refurbished replacement for an additional $150.00. It seems as though this is a common problem that needs to be addressed by SONY to fix this apparent overheating problem with several different models of PS3. I spent over $500.00 for this machine, not to mention how many games we have now purchased, that is now useless after only a year.

My playstation 3 got the dreaded yellow light of death while playing a certain game. Apparently its a hardware issue. Its out of warranty and they want to charge $150 to repair it. This is the 2nd time I have to send the ps3 in for repairs
Spending hours on the phone with their customer service listening to all of them even supervisors repeating canned responses. One of them claimed to be the floor/general manager and there was nobody else I could talk to. I spoke with 1 rep, 1 assistant supervisor, and then their supervisor who claimed he was the top guy there.

Santa brought Guitar Hero World Tour PS2 for my son. Our slim model PS2 will not read the disc. I have read on the internet that tons of people are having the same problem. We purchased our game from Amazon.com. We have a sad little boy and are wondering how to proceed. Our friends let us borrow their game to see if it was our disc. Both discs work on their ps2. Neither work on ours.
We also have several other new games that all work on our ps2, so it is not our system. Please advise how we should proceed. Thank you

We purchased a playstation 2 system for our son several years ago and he has enjoyed playing it very much. December of 2008 he asked for two additional PS2 games Guitar hero world tour and rock band 2. When we got them home they both read disc error. We brought our PS2 system and the new games to Game Stop store in Santa Rosa, CA on Stonypoint Road.
The manager chcecked the games and our system and then hooked one of their PS2 systems up. It seems the new PS2 games DO NOT WORK on the PS2 system? As we all know these systems are not cheap. I was told I could not get out cash back since the games had been opened and could only get a gift card/store credit. I think it is criminal to sell PS2 games to kids and not to have them work on their PS2 systems.
$107.00 were spent for 2 games now our son had NOTHING to play new on Christmas and we are now saving for another system NOT PLAYSTATION since they are not reliable.

system unable to read any discs i own a 80gb model
I called Sony and they want a $150.00 fee to fix or send me a used one with no explanation.

Failed PS3, having the YLOD symdrome (PS3 will not power on) I failed to mention in my previous form letter that the PS3 I sent back to Circuit City for repair (a replacement unit was sent to me) contained a Blu Ray disk of the movie Patton. This was never returned to me by Circuit City after having sent numerous emails to them requesting its return.

Purchased the 60Gb PS3 from Circuit City in 2007 (with 2 year extended warranty). After owning the PS3 for 375 days it stopped working. It suffered the YLOD (yellow light of death)syndrome (will not power up, turn system on, status indicator changes from green to flashing yellow then off) Had to send it back to Circuit City for a replacement unit. Their 2 year warranty costs $99.00, had I not purchased this Sony would have charged $150.00 for a replacement unit. The failure rate of the PS3 is extremely high and leads me to wonder if this is deliberate on Sony's part, to some how recoup their loss for selling the PS3 at below cost.

Playstation 3 got the dreaded Yellow Light of Death, aka YLOD. After paying $600 for the system alone, they are charging the consumer $149 to get it fixed, when it is obviously a defective problem on their end.
$149 to get it fixed or else it is like throwing away all the money I have spent on the console plus games and accesories, with adds up to well over $2,000. I can understand if I modded the thing or it was a user problem, btu with this many cases, it has to be a defect on their end.

I purchased a brand new PS# on 8/15/08 Gamestop only offered a 7 day warranty and on the second day I started playing the system and it froze this was a continual problem and when i went to return it to Game Stop I found out that I must go through Sony. I called Sony and they proceeded to explain to me that if they could not fix mine they would send to me a refurbished. I asked for a new system and was declined and told this was my only recourse. I also asked for a refund and was also declined.
I was never given any reason as to why I spent $427.00 for a new system but my warranty only covered for a refurbished system. I sent the system in on 3 occasions only to recieve it back the first 2 times not even looked at as all of my info was still on the system and now this past time I recieved a refurbished system that also freezes on the same game. I have exchanged the game so i know it is not that causing the freezing. i am tired of calling Sony as there is not Customer service. I filed a complaint with the BBB and then someone called me to offer me a free game for all of my trouble. Seems like hardly a resolutiion on a system that only works 75% of the time.
The money I paid for the system is my only damages.

Sony asked for 150 dollars to repair the Playstation 3 console for an unknown reason (the Yellow Lights). The Yellow Lights have no explanation, just that you need to send it in for repairs.
I had to pay 150 dollars for something i didn't do.

Well my playstation 3 have problems reading my games, dvds, and blu ray dvds. It doesnt read none at all well i called sony so i can send it to them but i figure out they want so much proof and stuff for the warranty and next thing i know my warranty expires... i still wanted to know what my ps3 has and wanted to send it to them and they tell me whats going on but i havent recieve nothing at all. Im pretty angry about this because i want to get fix my ps3 but i dont know no one that fix ps3s local were i live. Neither sony apparantly wants to help.

2 days after my sons warranty expired on his $600 playstation 3 it quit working. To make matters worse it was a Christmas gift so her we are, 10 days before Christmas, and the playstation 3 I bought him for Christmas last year is broken. On top of that he has asked for some new things for Christmas this year to go with his playstation. So I've purchased several items such as games, controllers, blu ray movies and a remote control that are now worthless. Giving these items to him for Christmas would be very sad as his playstation is now broke after only 1 year of having it.
I'm stuck with all this new stuf bought for Christmas. I also have a large collection of blu ray movies including one we just bought 2 days ago and haven't even gotten to watch it. Not to mention the fact that my son is just devistated.

Sony was advertising and is still advertising Playstation 3 for $249.00 when you open a charge account. I filled out all the information and was informed that I would receive a reply in a month. That was way too late for Christmas. I called Sony and obtained a phone number to find out about that and I got a recording that the deal was no longer available. I don't know how and why they can continue to advertise this way. I certainly don't want charge card when the offer is over and I hope they don't send one to me.
I hadn't looked further into purchasing the Playstation elsewhere because I thought that I knew where I would be purchasing it and now I've been looking and have been unable to find any special offers and know I have missed other offers because I didn't act on them.

I recently had my PS3 serviced. The BluRay laser had malfunctioned and I payed $150 to get it fixed. I received the unit back and all was working fine, for about 30 minutes. Then it froze again, and I got the same error code. I then sent the PS3 in AGAIN to be repaired. I just received it yesterday (after 11 days of it being in the mail because Sony decides to ship it out 2 days before Thanksgiving, eventhough it was completed 3 days prior) and tried to play it today. Now I do not get picture, I tried different AC jacks and nothing....
Frankly I am becoming fed up with this. I paid good money for my system, and my games. And now because of hardware and servicing errors, which are Sony's fault, I cannot enjoy my $500 system. I feel as I have been lied to. I was told I would get a working system, and twice I receive a broken system. Sounds like a lie to me. Please tell me what is wrong with this picture? I even requested that my unit be swapped for another refurbished unit, because of the recurring problems on their end.

I was playing Madden 09 on my 60GB when all of a sudden my power light went yellow then started blinking red. I contacted sony about the problem and all they said was that I needed to send it in and pay $150 for the problem. They want me to pay $150 for something that they won't even tell me whats wrong. I went online to find out if it was just my system and I found out that its been happen to alot of people, all of them with the 60GB.
my system doesn't work and my game is stuck in it. I also bought it when it first came out when it was $600 and since then I had spend almost $1500 dollars on it. I bought a fan, contoller, 20 PS2 games, 24 PS3 games.

I own a Playstation 3, the model with 60 GB, After a system update, the system does not play my ps 2 games anymore, I contacted sony and they said that there was nothing that they could do about it. When I bought the system it advertised that it will have backward compatibility with ps2 and thats why I bought it.
Sony is down on sales on ps3 games and the latest system the 160 Gb does not play ps2 games, I think what sony did to my ps3 was intentional and unethical.

Sony PS# has yellow light of death wont turn on and sony wants $150.00 to fix. There are too many people with same problem and sony needs to extend warranty. I bought a launch 60 gb and now it doesn't work. I spent $789.00 with controller and game what a waste.

Two years ago I bought a Playstation 3 and it broke a year later it did not read disks, a hardware failure. Good thing I had bought a 2 year extended warranty from best buy but it is only a one time use warranty once you use it up its done. A year passes and my Playstation 3 breaks again the same problem it does not read disks my warranty expired a week before my Playstaation broke. I do not believe I should pay $160 dollars for faulty hardware.
I have to pay $160 for repairs.

I got the yellow light of death. Please increase your warrenty and don't become a scam to get money. Many people don't even get it for a month without getting the YLOD. You couldn't make it so it turns off before over heating or whatever the problem is? This is ridiculous!
I can't play my PS3 and my Call Of Duty 5 is stuck in there!

I bought my Playstation 3 well over a year ago, only to have it get that blinking red light problem.(So my warranty expired) Now it wont even turn back on. I payed a good $600 dollars straight from my wallet expecting quality hardware. Turns out I am not the only customer experiencing this issue. Now why should I pay 150$ for faulty hardware, only to have it replaced with a less efficient PS3 that cant even play PS2 games? How about Sony gives me a free repair and returns 200$ so it would be as if I purchased a 40 gig model.
Im going to have to pay 150$ out of my pocket, even after forking over $600 for some faulty hardware.

i bought a ps2 for my son on 2-16-08 the unit quite reading games so it still being under warranty. i emailde in and set up a service request to have the unit fixed. printed 3 copies mailed the unit out 2 weeks later with one copy of the request. got an email one week later saying the request was not mailed with the unit so to get things going i could fax or email them the request so emailed the reqest right away. waited two weeks notheing
so i called to check to see where my unit was and gave them my service request # and name and they said that # was assigned to someone else. so tehy searched further and found the serv# was given to two diffrent people and he wanted me to pay 48.50 cents for the unit to be fixed. why sould i pay when the unit is under warranty and they caould not even find my unit. i told them to mail the unit back like it was and i would take further action on my own.
so i hope they mail me the unit i mailed in and not the other persons unit. how can they keep all this straigh and keep up with what is going on if i have the smae # as someone else. there unit was aps3. what is going on ...
unit not fixed and still under warranty they did not stick to there word on fixing the unit. i have warranty for 3 more months..
