Dell Talks Back

Michael of Peachland, NC September 23, 2008

Michael of Peachland NC (09/23/08)
In July of 2003 I ordered a computer from dell online. I was in the service at the time and had just got back from overseas. Little did I know I was being deployed again and I could not afford to pay for the computer that I had purchased. At this point I had the computer for less than 90 days. I returned the computer and and spoke with a supervisor Lynelle that said to me and my mom that I would have to pay the interest for the time that I had the computer which was 3 payments of 67.33. She guaranteed us that the account would be settled after this and she gave us a confirmation #.

6 months goes by after this agreement was made over the phone and I get a bill in the mail saying that I am late and charges are added to the amount. I called them up and they had no idea what I was talking about and I was passed around on the phone to more than 10 people. This was absolutely rediculous. Nothing cpmes out of the phone call. 2 years later I get a bill in the mail from a collection ageny and since then I have been receiving bills from the collection agency to pay a debt that I DO NOT OWE.

The consequences of this situation I would label as fairly severe. One I was lied to by a supervisor that apparently no longer works with dell financial. So trying to make my case is like talking to a wall or its a dead end all together. When I try to contact dell I am passed around on the phone to various people and I have to give my story more times than I need to. My credit sccore has been destroyed as a result of Dell Financials inability to put the customer first and follow through on promises.

I have proof of everything including where I had to pay the interest for the less than 3 months that I had the computer. I am in the right here and want my credit fixed. This has been ongoing pain and agony in my life and to those in my family as well. It has been over 5 years since I had purchased that computer and sent it back. I refuse to pay for a debt that I do not owe for a computer that I no longer have. I want the letters and the calls from the collection agency to stop.

I bought a computer and when i did i was informed that i had 12 months without finance charges. To my surprise they charged me finance charges for the 12 months the ones they gave me it free. I knew that they would charge me finance charges after the 12 months, but i recieved my statement that they charge me for the 12 months they told me it would be for free.

Later i called and told me i had to paid those 12 months and they charge me 309 dollars for the past 12 months. I told them that i thought they would charge me finance charges after the 12 months. I hope you ubderstand me and help me because these poeple dont understnad me or maybe i am wrong.

Im thinking these problem and cant get it out of my head. A lot of headaches and very nervous.

Dell Computer has and continues to harass me on the telephone and through their credit agents. Dell filed a frivolous lawsuit against me in NJ Superior Court, causing me to file an Answer and to travel to Newark, NJ for a hearing, at which Dell then failed to appear. The judge dismissed the case WITHOUT PREJUDICE, and my expenses could not be recovered. Yet, Dell continues the telephone harassment to extort monies which I do not owe to them.

I see from other posts that Dell Finance has this lock on the financing they are doing. I thought I was the only one until I did a search on dell finance identification verification and came to this site. I am basically throwing all the money I can at this debt because I want to be done with Dell. Period. I will never again purchase a dell product. From what I can see, dell is choosing to get out of the financing business and instead of contacting their customers and saying... Hey, any loans you have open with us, we want you to pay them off but we are not going to extend anymore credit. Instead we will keep this credit line open and put impossible roadblocks up so you cannot use it.

[Dell has] lost a personal customer and be sure I will never recommend Dell as a business product. We all know times are hard, both for individuals and companies. Still, this is America and in times of trouble we try to pull together and help out. Not stomp each other.

The consequences for me and Dell is that I will not do business with Dell ever again, either as an individual or for any company I work with. This type of deception and pushing back on a consumer is very poor business practice. In some cases, simply being honest would work wonders. If Dell is deciding to not extend anymore credit.. say so. But for a customer service agent (actually several) of a company the size of Dell to actually say.. I cant help you and I dont have a supervisor and thats the end of it.

So over 3 years ago I purchased a computer from Dell by applying for their Dell Preferred Account. I later also purchased a digital camera on the account. I have been paying on the account ever since then, about 50 a month. I then noticed that my balance was never going down. I finally decided to look at my statement more closely and realized that my interest rate was 28.99%.

I was shocked because I didn't know interest rates could even go that high. I knew that it was partially my own fault that my balance was not going down, since I was only paying the minimum. However, I was a college student at the time and that was my reason for purchasing the computer in the first place.

Anyways, in an attempt to try to make progress on paying down the date, I decided to call Dell and ask for a lower interest rate. Since I had read that typically if you just ask for it, then it is usually granted. Well I was told that over the course of 3 years, I had been late once, and as a result, I could not be granted a lower interest rate. So now I'm at the point where I feel like I've paid way more than the items I purchased are worth, and I'm still stuck with a huge balance.
