About YMT Vacations

We started in 1967 in Michigan as “Your Man Tours” arranging tours to Hawaii for Veterans of Foreign Wars. The “Your Man” was referenced to our Polynesian guides who greeted guests at the Honolulu airport with beautiful and fragrant flower leis. Our guides created a warm and engaging atmosphere as they introduced YMT guests to their beautiful island paradise.

Had to cancel trip due to Covid 19. Was told will credit my credit card with refund. 4-6 weeks. When a tornado damaged my home 3 weeks ago they stated they would expedite credit. It is in the 6th week now and same story. I will never travel with YMT again due to the poor refund process, broken promises and lip service. STILL WAITING.

I booked a vacation through YMT for this April and understandably it was postponed due to COVID. I was pleased to learn that we could use 100% of what we paid towards a future trip but when I contacted YMT to learn more, I was appalled by the poor customer service and lack of any other options for their customers.

1. The person that I had the "pleasure" of speaking with might as well refused to have helped. She replied in one word answers and gave no reassurance or advice about how to move forward.

2. They would not guarantee that a future trip would even be available when we chose to rebook.

3. They could give any advice about when would be a good time to make a decision.

4. There are NO OTHER OPTIONS. They will not entertain the idea of even a partial refund and the person I spoke with basically said that "every situation is different" which to me says that some customers are getting a good deal, while others are not. I guess if you throw a big enough hissy fit they might do something for you.

I would like to end this review by saying that I work in this industry and have all the sympathy in the world for the position the global pandemic puts companies like this in. HOWEVER, the companies that will make it through this will have excellent customer relations and flexible options. YMT is not one of these companies. I fear that our future travel credit will be worth nothing when the rest of their customers discover this as well.

With the existing Pandemic our Trip to Alaska has been canceled for June 16. Unfortunately YMT is failing to give a refund. They have offered a credit which is good for 2 years which I believe is unacceptable. My wife spoke with someone named TARA who said that Holland America was not giving refunds. When I went to the Holland America website it says they are. I find YMT's Practice of no refunds and travel credit only to be joke especially since we are in the middle of a Pandemic.

The manager Tara claims they can’t get their money back, so we can’t either! I think that’s a brunch of bull!! This is a worldwide epidemic going on, shouldn’t the company have insurance? And just like someone else said, when you have a problem they won’t call you back. They do everything to avoid you!!! Take my advice - don’t ever use YMT vacations!!!!

Cancellation insurance doesn't cover Epidemic. YMT is not responding to my e-mails. I'm asking for a refund of my tax, and 3 tours I booked through them and my air fare.

Original Review: Booked cruise with YMT, Marvels of East Asia, tour started in Hong Kong and ended in China. Canceled the tour on 1/27/20 due to coronavirus. As of 1/30/20 YMT still had not canceled the cruise with Holland American. Cancellation insurance won't pay anything, not one of approved reasons for cancellation. Holland American says they will allow YMT to let me transfer to another booking but again YMT says they can't. I asked who has my money, YMT says they don't and Holland American says they cannot respond to financial questions. We traveled with YMT for the first time in Oct. 2019 and that will be our last. My husband and I have traveled with world with various tour co. and have never experienced anything like YMT. From accommodations to the tour director and everything in between, it was the worst we have ever encountered. Even for a bare bones company like YMT it was well below standards (not even a complimentary bottle of water on the bus). Our fellow passengers were all in agreement about this poorly run tour to the Balloon Fiesta. Never again with YMT. For budget conscious folks use Caravan if you want something really great go for Tauck, in the long run it is worth the money, believe me.

Iceland Tour October 2019 - Our flight arrived a half hour early, so there was no one there as of yet to greet us. That was okay, a bunch of us just waited together until they got there. We loved this vacation. The fact that we stayed at one hotel was the best. It was right in town, so you could walk to different restaurants and coffee shops if you so chose. Our Tour Director, Gouny was fantastic. She knew the history of Iceland and filled us in from Vikings forward. It was very windy, but that did not stop us from seeing the sites! Thank you Guony for a great trip! Thank you YMT for the one stay at a hotel.

We took airfare through YMT. 1. An agent was to meet and greet us at baggage. The greeter was aware two couples were getting our luggage. She asked us to wait while she got the others situated in the bus. She left 4 of us stranded for over an hour, an additional hour or so of waiting the arrival of 2 more couples plus getting us to the hotel. We reported her to the "greeting personnel" and were told, "She has been with us a while and she is a good gal." No apology.

2. When a step-on guide begin a walking tour in NY, he started walking away before everyone got out of the bus as did the bus tour guide. My husband returned to the bus to retrieve his phone and the whole group had disappeared. I called the tour guide twice, texted her, and waited where the bus dropped us off for a minimum of 30 minutes. I tried calling YMT which offered the message, "All our ? are busy;" hold. I could not tie up the line holding as I was hoping a tour guide would contact me. Scary to be lost in New York City.

3. The tour guide convinced YMT to deliver to the airport people that had made their own travel arrangements. Shame on her, it costs more to go with YMT tour & flight; we pay extra for luggage. This is expected. The people that took SW airlines got much cheaper flight, free luggage, The tour guide, with YMT approval, provided them a free ride to the airport so they could avoid the cab fare. You bent the rules for a few. 4. One of the motels has a set of steps that are an invitation for disaster. Very steep especially for senior citizens. The best part of the trip were the sights and the bus driver who's driving skills and friendliness were appreciated by all. YMT Trip #4 was not a good experience.

Italy Tour - 9 days. Many of us on this tour were unhappy with the level of service provided by YMT. The hotels left much to be desired. I would rate the living arrangements on a scale from 0 - 10 as a 2. The beds were awful and uncomfortable, the linen and comforters were dirty/dingy. We had to ask for replacement and still was unable to be made comfortable. No padding for the beds; only one sheet as though you were sleeping on the bare mattress. The locations were not good, not close to anything. The Food....OMG was JUST PLAIN AWFUL!!! AWFUL! AWFUL AWFUL! We paid way too much for this trip for the lack of quality, travel, hotel accommodations and lack of knowledge and helpfulness of the tour guide. I contact YMT while on tour to no avail. I definitely (others said the same) will not use them again for a tour.

Attempts to login using all my email addresses also failed refusing the password, and any attempt to reset the password was rejected because my email addresses were unknown to the system. There is a link to contact for help which only returns a 404 error. I send YMT Vacations 2 emails using the website regarding the issues, but no response so far. Calling them I end up in a phone queue, which I don't have patience for. I will look elsewhere for my vacation trip.

Our group of 10 people went on a tour with YMT to Greece for 10 days. We arrived home 2 days ago and am still upset over our experience on this tour. There is way too much bad things to talk about, but just to say the hotels, food, excursions, bus and boat transfers were the worst I have ever experienced. My hotels were so bad we tried switching rooms at each hotel to find no room was better. The hotels were miles away from anything to eat or enjoy, like any first time traveler to a area could want. We spent hundreds of dollars on taxis and food to find some enjoyment. Our tour guide was disorganized and we always felt like we were on our own to figure things out. Do your homework before setting up a tour with YMT. They give you just enough info to get you excited but not enough to know exactly where you will stay or experience. This tour was a joke and we all say we will NEVER use YMT again for our next vacation.

In October 2018, my sister and I went on a trip to China. It started in Beijing and ended in Shanghai. Truly a great trip. Our flight from Los Angeles to Beijing was an overnight flight and neither of us slept much. We were met at the Beijing Airport by one of our National Guides; while our second National Guides met another group of vacationers. Once everyone arrived, we were transported to our first hotel. Very nice. Coupons for dinner were in our welcome envelope. Our first afternoon was at our leisure of which we napped trying to catch up on missed sleep. Dinner at our first hotel was buffet style of which there were lots of options.

From that point on, our trip was packed with all the things on our bucket list. The top being a trip to The Great Wall of China, Tian'an men Square, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Army, Yangtze River Cruise and of course the Giant Pandas! So much more was included... too numerous to name. Our two National Guides were fabulous, Snow and Jack. Thank you for offering this great trip and I recommend in highly.

On our first outing to Alaska with YMT we had 2 legs out of four where my wife and I were not sitting by each other on the aircraft but directly across the aisle from each other. We were able on one leg to get someone to switch seats but the second leg was a family not willing. We informed YMT on our second tour to Europe that they needed to make sure we sat together on the airlines. Not sure but the same thing happened on our 14 hr flight to Amsterdam, no seats together just across the aisle. This tour was booked 1 yr. in advance and there should be no reason for this mess up. The girl next to me said she had just booked her flight a month prior.

I called the airline in Europe to verify our seats with the airplane seating map and found that three of our four flights were screwed up and we were not by each other. I made the necessary changes myself and trust me we will not be traveling with YMT ever again. Secondly when we book our river cruise we were told it was a Viking ship but later found that was not the case. Way too much misinformation from YMT personnel and you can trust we will be finding another company to travel through with are hard earned $$$$.

So contacting YMT resulted in NOTHING. No refunds, no credits, no changes. You are screwed. $4,800 down the tubes. I found another couple that could take the trip, but that wasn't even an option. I tried to work with YMT for something, but they don't care. From all the information for travel insurance, the reviews are so bad, it makes it almost useless. The success for travel is to find a good company that really cares. YMT does not. Shame on you YMT for such bad service and you are a service oriented company.

The sales staff is quick to sell you a tour and get your deposit. Once they get your deposit and you read over the details of the trip you may decide to change your mind. If you change your mind they will charge you $100 per person to change the date of your trip or your travel plan. And if you decide to cancel your trip they will not give you a YMT letterhead document to submit to your insurance company to get reimbursement. So unless you want to lose your entire deposit you are forced to take a trip with them. We did not have a positive experience with this company and would not recommend them. My wife and I booked an Alaskan Tour and cruise with YMT in August 2018. We were very disappointed when we arrived in Anchorage to find that YMT had lodged us in a hotel (Crowne Pointe) which is several miles from downtown Anchorage and is located in a WAREHOUSE DISTRICT. Only restaurant within walking distance from the hotel was a Subway Shop. The tour into Denali was yet another disappointment. We were lodged in a hotel (Grizzly Bear) which was primarily a RV park. No fridge, microwave and ice machine was broken. Hotel also had no lounge or restaurant. YMT advised us that they were providing FOOD TRUCKS for us in the parking lot (dirt and gravel) located several hundred feet away from our room. Food trucks were at our own expense and offered Thai and Mexican food for dinner and breakfast... REALLY??? FOOD TRUCKS???

If that wasn't enough, a RAT fell out from under one of the food trucks! Needless to say... there was no dinner or breakfast eaten by us or several other folks in our group. A detailed letter was written to the YMT corporate office along with several follow-up phone calls. Absolutely NO response has been received from YMT after six weeks... only promises that we would be contacted by a supervisor named Samantha. When we called and tried to speak with "Samantha" she was always in a meeting or she was in-between other things. In conclusion, we found YMT to be unprofessional, unresponsive and evasive to customer concerns. Find another travel agency to book your tour with!

I recently had to cancel a trip to Hawaii due to severe illness the day before the trip and I got no refund even though we paid for the travel insurance and the flight insurance. I did not even get my baggage fee returned because it had all been booked through the travel company. A recent flyer from YMT was a reminder of our recent experiences on a YMT excursion on the MSC Magnifica from Copenhagen to Genoa. From our perspective, there was room for improvement on the part of YMT. More specifically: Language skills - At least 1 of the 3 YMT reps should have been fluent in Italian in order to avoid some of the missed communication while on board, i.e. Coordinated first day activities would have avoided the ship's lifeboat drills being held simultaneously with a required YMT orientation.

YMT would have known that the ships excursion-goers would be allowed off the ship first, thus avoiding: every excursion group boarding buses at the same time, going to the same places, wasting time in traffic instead of touring (Lisbon). Delays that kept disappointed YMT tourists from reaching the top of Gibraltar a much-anticipated highlight. Neither water nor coffee was negotiated as part of the food/beverage package provided. YMT reps English fluency was effective for England and Gibraltar: not Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

Preparation - The reps were not familiar with the ship or the cruise line. The reps were not familiar with the countries being visited culture, geography, customs, etc. Ideally, the reps would have known: transportation from the airport to the Copenhagen hotel would be difficult on a Friday because of the many taxi drivers did not work on their religious holiday. There was a national holiday being celebrated in Copenhagen on the day we were to board, snarling traffic and causing guides and buses to improvise substantially. The Hamburg tour was scheduled on a holiday. By law, bus drivers in some countries must have hour breaks a major impact on tour scheduling. Although the ship's daily newsletter reminded passengers of the several time changes, there was no temperature conversion chart, nor did the reps respond positively to a suggestion to post one.

Tours - Tours began only after a wait of to 1 hours after the posted meeting time. Stragglers were accommodated at the expense of the group's tour time. The lengthy wait to disembark at Gibraltar resulted in YMT tourists missing the deadline to go to the top of the Rock by 15 minutes: the ships tours enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime views. Tour Guides - We had good guides in Copenhagen (bus #8)**, London, Amsterdam*, Gibraltar***, and Milan*. In our opinion, 5 out of 10 is not adequate for a tour of this scope.

In Sweden, the former teacher had us follow her from location to location for lectures. Friends on the ship's boat excursion learned Swedish drinking songs. Others had enough free time to explore the interesting waterfront. In Hamburg, the guide was unable to improvise (due to the holiday closures). We drove past many converted warehouses, caught only a glimpse of their famous opera house, and listened to commentary such as this is the end of the lake as we drove around the end of a lake. The highlight of the Hamburg tour was a young college student. He was personable, knowledgeable, and kept everyone informed and entertained during the long bus rides to/from the city.

In LaCoruna, the young guides seemed to run out of material, allowed much more time than necessary to visit a small shopping area off the main square, and did not know anything about the large public military gathering we witnessed. In Lisbon, the woman would not wait even pause when she crossed a street or entered a building that cut off the sound. She had us sit down in a church to tell us about it in front of signs that asked for silence. Later, when she led the group on a fast walk around the square, we said we were going back to the bus (which was still within sight). She then warned us that we would be on our own and it would be our fault if we missed the ship. Authoritative would be a nice word for her attitude.

In Barcelona, the bus circled and circled: we saw the same glimpses of the Gaudi church several times, but got no closer. The guide ran out of things to say. When asked about the many flags flying from balconies, her answers were evasive and vague. In our opinion, she missed an opportunity to educate visitors about Spanish history, culture, etc. At the least, all 3 YMT reps should have been fluent in at least 1 other European language, traveled to at least 2 of the countries visited, received an orientation from/with the Italian cruise line, been prepared to fill in the blanks for flummoxed native tour guides.

I decided to write this review because I almost didn't book the Hawaii tour with YMT Vacations because of some of the negative reviews I saw. My experience was very positive. The hotel in Oahu was a block away from the beach, the hotel staff very helpful and friendly, hotel room clean. The same was true of the other hotels except they were on the ocean. I won't say they were five-star hotels, but honestly for the $1,299 price for 12 days I would have been naive to think they would have been, but definitely 3-4 stars and no complaints. Didn't sign up for many optional tours because there were five of us so we rented cars and did our own thing. The YMT host was very helpful about places to go on our own. My husband and I took the National Parks of the Golden West tour on 9/5/17. Having never taken a bus tour before, we didn't quite know what to expect and I can honestly say it exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide, Garrett, was very knowledge and extremely organized (which is a necessity in this business). The bus driver, Ron, was a true professional. His driving skills were impeccable and he was extremely safety conscious. The sights were spectacular; photos certainly don't do them justice. We were provided with the opportunity to have several "picnics" on the tour; which we enjoyed. Everyone on the tour got along well; in that we all had at least one common interest - travel. Our seats on the bus were rotated on a daily basis; which enabled us to visit with, and thus get to know pretty much everyone on the bus over the course of the two weeks.

One of our favorite experiences on this tour (which meant getting up at 3:30 AM) was a sunrise walk along the southern rim of the Grand Canyon; followed by a wonderful breakfast at the El Tovar Hotel. Life simply doesn't get better than this. In my opinion, this is simply the best way to travel. I look forward to booking another vacation with YMT.

One time we were told we would get in at 4:30 and did not get in til 10 pm. Must have been lost, but no explanation was given. Often only food was three blocks from motel and was fast food. Tour - Rocky Mountains and Western Frontier 6/28 - 7/11 2017: As part of this trip we were to stay in downtown Salt Lake City where one can easily walk to the Mormon Tabernacle concerts for free. Other interests and food are also in walking distance. When I received the final documents the hotel listed was not even in downtown. I called and I was told that they could substitute hotels, which I understand, but surely not advertise downtown and use a hotel which is not even in Salt Lake City. I was then told that there was a mistake on the itinerary and that we were downtown. I called again but the customer rep would not even speak with me - she was rude and put the phone down.

On the actual trip we were a 25 minute drive from downtown and there was nowhere to buy food for one and a half miles from the hotel. If you wanted to hear the choir you either had to make your own way or pay for an optional. Had we stayed downtown as the brochure and website stated there would have been no need for an optional - to pay for something that was free. Also the hotel we stayed in was less than half the price of the original hotel. We stayed two nights. I understand that sometimes one hotel has to be substituted for another but surely a downtown hotel should be substituted by another downtown hotel. The paying clients need to be informed of such a huge change and not be misled.

Also the customer rep who told me that we were actually staying downtown was either incompetent or lying. What happened to truth in advertising? What happened to customer service reps who listen and try to deal with an issue rather than just do their best to quickly get off the line? The tour itself was fine but this is obviously not an honest approach and who benefited from the money that YMT saved on the two nights in a "downtown" hotel?

Stranded our entire group after a Luau (Not included, expensive & dreadful) until a tour guide from a different company let all of us on his bus & dropped us at our hotel. No apology and No responsibility for it. C. A lazy tour guide who was more interested in trying to be funny than doing his job. D.
