Booked a car in Feb for June (airport). Their system cancelled the reservation (email proof) but my credit card was still charged in June. I have been sending emails, chats and WhatsApp and no one is responding. I finally managed to get a complaint & a case uploaded that will still take 20 days to be investigated + the backlog they are facing (no wonder..). Never ever again will I use this company. 100% scam.

Rented a car via HOTELS.com and selected THRIFTY for a pickup at DFW. (Didn't realize that Hotels.com handed me off to CAR TRAWLER.) Our flight was delayed and we didn't get to the rental counter until 10:30PM and the counter was closed! (I had already registered for "Bypass-the-Counter" providing them with my Driver's License.) No one was there; no one in the pickup area, not a soul was around. We were literally stranded without a car! I called the customer service number; they said they were closed. I went online to "Manage" my rental and I could not because my rental reservation had passed.
I filed for a refund since THEY did not supply me with a car, nor provided an alternative solution to pickup my rental (e.g. drop box). They refused stating that I knew the terms and I had to pickup the car by 10:00pm. So I gave them money, and they provided NO service for that money, and now they refuse to return my money for a service that wasn't provided? It isn't my fault that my plane was late. Did Car Trawler ever call me? Did they provide a means for me to pickup my rental reservation? Did they call the next day to see if I still needed a car? NOPE. If you see the name Car Trawler? RUN! Go to another agency. And don't rent a car through HOTELS.com. I called their customer service and was told "we don't rent cars". Huh. It shows it on their webpage.

When I went back the next day the clerk at Rentafacil told me that they don't book through third parties and there was no car reserved for me. Now cartrawler and rentafacil have me listed as a no show and I can't get a refund. They stole $300 from me Feb 3 2024 **.

I booked a car service from JFK to my home through the Emirates website. Emirates usually has impeccable service and customer service. I was promised a driver with a sign at arrivals. Instead, while I was still on the plane I received a barrage of texts with my driver's name and contact. They asked for my selfie to help him (Jerry) find me. When I got out I tried texting and calling. No one was there. I got more texts and a caller ID that said "best price for you."
Finally a man with a ** accent answers and repeats "car coming. Car coming" and sent texted telling me to wait at C3 where the ubers. He sends screen shots of gps, supposedly the driver on his way. Finally, a woman in a white van (not the black car from my booking) comes out running with my face on her phone. She speaks no English and cannot even confirm my address. She does offer me some gum. She's nice, but for the love.... terrible company. They do not monitor a customer service email which EMIRATES PROVIDED TO ME. Instead they direct you to a link which is broken. DO NOT EVER BOOK WITH CAR TRAWLER IN NYC.

Vehicle was reserved for 2:30 pm. At 3:15 pm after 4 calls to this company, they finally sent the confirmation email. An hour too late for me to make my deadline. Their response was "We don't know why you didn't get the email, we sent it." That went on for 1 hour. I finally got in touch with the rental company they contracted with who told me there was no vehicle available. CARTRAWLER refused a refund. Flat out stole my money. BIG bait and switch! They'll tell you you're all set for a low cost rental, but not disclose that it's an electric vehicle and leave you stranded and stuck upgrading at the counter. Rented thru UberRent via CarTrawler and at 12AM we were told it was going to be an EV, which would not work for the distances we had to travel, so we were forced to upgrade at the counter amounting in nearly TRIPLE the originally quoted cost. Uber will do nothing to help you because CarTrawler is the booking service and their customer service team will be jerks to you and refuse to rectify the situation. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I am sharing this in hopes that other consumers will read it BEFORE not doing business with these scammers. I booked a car to which I paid a premium insurance, only to find out that the rental company will still secure a $2,250 deposit on my credit card and they will use the ENTIRE amount if the car gets any scratches or dents. When I asked them to cancel the useless policy they said it needed to be cancelled more than 24 hours prior to the rental period, ignoring that I booked the rental only 2 hrs in advance. I wasn't informed of none of the important facts - that they need 2,250$ security deposit and that I can't cancel the policy if I don't needed it. I will NEVER do business again with these scammers!

I booked the rental car with NU Car Rentals. The transaction was done through Hotels.com. Cartrawler is the broker. When I arrived at the Phoenix airport, the NU Car Rental place was closed already (super frustrating). I had to make other travel arrangements late. I noticed that my card was still hit with the transaction. I called NU Car Rentals and explained what happened. Danielle (super nice) canceled my booking without penalty and told me that I had to call the broker since they didn’t have the funds. I called Cartrawler (646-845-1888) and they refused to reimburse me my funds, stating that because I arrived after NU Car Rentals was closed, it was my fault. Or that I should have called them prior to the time of the rental company closing; I was on a place. Super unreasonable. I'll avoid them in the future.

CarTrawler cannot understand why they should refund $233 for a car rental "reservation". This was not my 1st time reserving a car online, think we all do it to find the cheapest price. Why, then would I use an agent in Ireland to secure a car rental in the US? August 2023, provided my name to pick up the Dollar rental car(as usual) they did not request a voucher from my "reservation agent" Dollar requested credit card and asked if I wanted insurance told them I took insurance when I made reservation. The reply was, "We will not honor that policy", so took Dollar insurance (about $36) so as not to be sorry later.
So did Dollar see the name Cartrawler? I did not research CarTrawler to be used as an agent to secure a Dollar Car Rental, never saw the name until the charge $233 hit my Credit Card AND Dollar hit the same for $157. Advised my Credit Card to dispute the duplicate charge. Car Trawler replied: they do not provide cars they secure reservations and voucher should be given at time of rental and other things agreed to at the time I made the reservation by checking the box accepting rental terms and conditions... Why would Dollar not request the voucher at the time of rental they saw the insurance, no? Sounds like an elaborate scheme with the car rental company involved to rip off the consumer. Good luck not sure how I missed this one.. The next rental was scrutinized thoroughly.

When I try to get the money back, OHH surprise, they denied and refused the refund. I raised the issue with my bank, but CarTrawler sent a bunch of paper justifying their denial and because I couldn't provided proof of the system failure, the complaint with the bank ended there. STAY AWAY from this SCAM company! Just as so many others have already written, they are LIARS and THIEVES! They quote one price and "guarantee" no hidden extras, but then when you show up at the airport, the car rental company (Dollar Rent-a-Car in Panama City, Republic of Panama in my case) tells you there are all sorts of extra fees. In my case the $110.37 I was quoted for a 5-day rental more than TRIPLED in price once all the hidden fees were added! The man was very rude and threatened to not even rent me a car if I didn't pay the additional fees.
Having no choice since it was so early in the morning and no other car rental place was open, I paid the additional fees, but I will NEVER use this SCAM company again! (This company likes to use the legitimate reputations of other companies to carry out their SCAM. In my case, it was COPA Airlines, an airline I have used for years with no problems. This company has awful customer service. When I booked my rental car through Hotels.com, I was re-directed to a 3rd party site, Car Trawler. I booked the car in my husband's name and used my credit card to pay for the car (like I have done countless other times with several other car rental companies). When we arrived at the Las Vegas NU car rental desk, I was shocked at the condition of the building. It was filthy and falling apart. The agents present seemed miserable and were extremely rude. We stood in line for almost an hour. they refused to release the car I had paid for because my husband had a debit card, not a credit card. They refused to accept a debit card for the security deposit.
They also refused to help me rebook and I was treated very rudely and poorly since I booked with a third party company. They left me completely stranded on Thanksgiving day. I had a road trip planned, with hotels already booked and paid for and I desperately needed a car. After a couple emails with Car Trawler "customer support", they refused to refund any of my money. Credit cards and debit cards are basically used interchangeably. We have used a debit card to rent cars from at least 3 other companies this year. Lesson learned: Do not book with NU Rentals, and do not book rentals using a 3rd party site.

I have only the one card so I had no other card to offer them. They have also refused to refund the $373.49 reservation payment. My bank says they can't help me because I authorized it and Alaska Airlines can't help me because it's a third party, and Car Trawler won't help me because it's written in the fine print of the contract that a 'credit' card is required at pick up. Disgusting that they accepted it for a deposit and now won't refund it even though I didn't get the use of a car.

I recently traveled to LA to take care of a medical issue and rented a car through this platform. Apparently, CarTrawler was a sub-app built into the LAX car rental website, because I never actually noticed this branding until the nightmare of getting a refund on this rental began. For starters, I rented this car over a month in advance to keep everything organized. Nowhere in the rental process did it say anything about needing any special kind of credit card, I double-checked because I had lost my credit card and only had my debit. I haven’t had any issues with that in the past, most rental agencies just ask for an extra deposit. Apparently, the rental agency I rented from (Nu- also terrible customer service) doesn’t accept debit, but this wasn’t communicated to me clearly until the day I arrived to pick up my car.
CarTrawler had already taken nearly $400 from my card yet hadn’t clearly communicated that I wouldn’t be provided a service despite having paid already. When I got to the desk at Nu they assured me that when this happens they always issue a refund. However, after a month of trying to get that refund from CarTrawler, they won’t release my funds. This is straight-up robbery- taking money and not delivering a service. Of course, I started my claim immediately upon arrival and they did nothing for 2 weeks to help. I would never trust this service again and recommend you always go directly to a rental agency. Never trust this company.

Total disaster. When we rent to the kiosk in Panama City, Dollar Rental wouldn’t accept the letter from our insurance company stating we had 2 million dollars of liability insurance in any country in the world and would only release the car if we paid another $45/day. We were renting for 2 months so another $2400 was out of our budget. We didn’t accept the car and wrote up a new contract for 1 week. We started the “complaint process” via WhatsApp chats immediately and submitted all backup documents to the address they told us to email to. We received an email today stating the car wasn’t released to us because my husband's credit card has his middle initial on it and he didn’t put the initial on the initial deal we made online.
When I replied that this was not even part of our complaint, the email I received back stated that address isn’t monitored. It’s the same address we had to send all backup docs to and they confirmed receipt of the documents so what’s up with that? I figure they all have a good laugh and go out for dinner with our money. When we arrived in Seattle, we found that the Budget location no longer existed! It was now a parking garage, and we could not get a car on such short notice from any rental company - we sat in the train station for an hour trying them all. We lost the amount paid for our hotel, $230, because it was too late to cancel and we had no way to get there, and ended up having to spend the night at an expensive Seattle hotel before our flight home the next day.
CarTrawler refuses to take responsibility for the money we lost due to their error in booking us a car at a non-existent Budget location, and their idea of customer assistance was to contact the hotel and ask them to refund our money. Of course the hotel refused; this was not their fault and they were a small local lodging, not a huge third party car rental agent like CarTrawler! At the time of purchase, there was nothing to indicate that the voucher did not include rental taxes and fees (like other 3rd party vendors such as Hotwire). What a surprise that my $649 rental became an $897 rental. Even when I asked CarTrawler to investigate, they didn't state that their voucher/price didn't include taxes and fees. It was only when I called Thrifty that they explained that to me.

Booked through Alaska Airlines for a car in Detroit. Upon arrival the company they booked me with had discontinued operations in Detroit over 6 months prior. CarTrawler Rep said to just get alternative transportation and they would refund the cost. When I returned from the trip and filed for a reimbursement, they denied it saying I needed a transcript of my conversation with the car rental desk in Detroit; the one that did not exist. Very disappointed that Alaska Airlines brands this as "Alaska Airlines Cars" but it you call Alaska they say they can't help. BTW, the reps were also rude and insulting. Worst experience with any company ever.

I made a car rental reservation through Emirate's website while booking my trip. I was thinking, Emirate Airway booked my car from third party, but I receive a confirmation email from CarTrawler. Few days later, I received a WhatsApp Msg asking for my Passport, DL and other legal documents. My entire travel history, no one ever asked me for all these docs well before car pick up, it’s always over the counter. I though it is spam and ignored it. The booking was made including pick up from airport to location. In their, pick up policy, I must inform about my arrival, so they arrange pick.
During Covid-19 time all domestic and international flight’s schedule were uncertain, so we decided to contact once we land to destination. When I landed and call for a pickup they couldn’t find reservation, after lengthy discussion, they were able find reservation, and told us someone will be there shortly. We waited for 2+ hrs and no one show up for to pick up. I called again, they inform me to come to pick up location to get rental, I denied and ask them to cancel reservation. They didn’t cancel the reservation and charged me for 4 days rental. When I dispute the transaction with my CC company, CarTrawler issue no refund based on their "No Show" policy. If they have responsibility for pick up, how come it’s No Show? They are cheating people in name of “POLICY”.

I write this review, weeks after the actual experience. Mainly to inform others that CarTrawler is NOT a Rental Car service, nor do they have any Cars to rent. After a thorough review of their business history, it is clear that CarTrawler is not at ALL, a service but instead a Reservation Middle-man. I give them 1 star, because I can't give them any less. On Nov 15th 2021, my father in Washington was displaced by the flooding that happened in NE Washington. He lives in Sumas which is about 2hr drive from Seattle. On November 18th my father contacts me to tell me he isn't doing so well, which prompts me to book a flight and a rental car through Alaska Airline's website. In the process of booking my flight, I am offered a "convenience" service to book a rental car. Normally I would book directly through Enterprise Rent a Car service, but took the opportunity for a cheaper discounted "voucher" service through Alaska Airlines portal.
On Nov 20, I book everything, and given a Reservation Voucher number for a Thrifty Rental Car service. What I hoped would be a simple and straight forward process. On Nov 22nd, I land in Seattle, everything go fine so far. I prepaid for everything, food, seat, and car rental. However once I arrived at the Thrifty Rental kiosk, I am presented with "we are sorry, but your voucher did not come through". In which I was informed that I would need to pay the total amount of my reservation, and that the voucher wouldn't actually pay for the service until AFTER I've returned the vehicle. This to me was nearly an additional $800 on top of my prepayment of $350+ (fees, and such).
Since CarTrawler wasn't actually a service, Thrifty did not rent me a vehicle. Leaving me stranded in Seattle for the evening, having to book a hotel room on my dime. Nov 22, 10pm, Alaska Airlines customer service informs me, that I did not book a rental through them. But through a third party service provider. CarHire =/= CarTrawler. Nov 23rd, I contact CarTrawler customer service to be informed that what happened to me, is unique and that they will have to review my case over the next 20 days. Nov 23rd, I go ahead and contact the insurance provider that I paid $88.00 to cover my rental, only to be informed that my situation wasn't covered since I did not receive a rental car through CarTrawler. Essentially telling me that CarTrawler isn't a car rental service but a booking service and my insurance payment wasn't covering anything.
Nov 25th, I contact CarTrawler service again, to inquire about a refund or to cancel my booking due to the missed pickup date. CSR (customer service rep) tells me again, nothing they can do, but give me a reference number to my complaint. Dec 1st, After dealing with my fathers situation, I am without any refund. and I receive a email from CarTrawler asking me to describe the situation to them. I detail this story, in similar words only to be told I will have to wait their 20 days to review my complaint. Dec 15th, I receive a email from CarTrawler asking me to provide them bank statements, photocopy of my debit/credit cards used, and pretty much saying there will be another 20 day delay in reviewing my case. At this point, I have already returned my Enterprise Car Rental, and have helped my father in obtaining a new vehicle to drive with. So at this point I don't need any rental services.
Since the email on the 15th was essentially asking for a photocopy of my credit card/debit. this raised red flags. ALL STOP. At this point, just file a dispute or a chargeback with your financial institution. CarTrawler has absolutely no intention on refunding the voucher reservation costs. If you paid any additional costs to insure or protect your "voucher" purchase, you would have pretty much paid CarTrawler's $57 cancellation fee. At this point I sent CarTrawler multiple emails describing the situation, only to be told there is nothing they can do. CarTrawler is NOT a car rental service, they do NOT have cars, but they are ONLY a reservation/booking service, pretending to be part of the company you used to reserve through.
A brief history of CarTrawler shows the company has been sold multiple times in the past four years alone, as a business investors group. They make their money off of the fees, and forgotten refunds to help drive up their profitability. Again, I warn anyone NOT to ever book your services through any 3rd party company like CarHire or CarTrawler. I should have known it was a scam back in Nov 20th, because my financial institution locked my payment card when I initially reserved my rental. I had later on realize that CarTrawler is based in Dublin Ireland. It is NOT an American company. I am copying and pasting my review across various consumer reporting services. Considering since actual reviews from people are negative... any positive review is suspect.

I thought I rented a car through Budget, but apparently it was through Cartrawler as a third party. On the website it was not clear that you needed a credit card to rent a card, but this information was written in an email right after I had pre-paid. I did not have a credit card, so I called the company immediately to cancel. I was then told by the man on the phone that I would get a full refund since I cancelled within 24 hours, and that he would do the cancellation for me. I double checked that I would get the full refund, and he said all my money would be back on my bank account within 20 days. It has now been one and a half month, and I have still not received my money. I have tried to contact them via mail and on the booking website, but they do not answer. I am now 300euros short, something that have made it hard for me to pay my bills since this whole ordeal started. Do not trust this company with your money.

I have never been cheated before with car rental; Do not - and do never - use CarTrawler!! We prepaid a one-week car rental in Sicily through CarTrawler with a visa card. When we arrived at Sicily, we were taken to this far-away rental shop ("OptimoRent"), where they blankly refused to give us the car on grounds that we did not present them with a Credit card (i.e. MasterCard) in the driver's name because they wanted to get a €1000 deposit additionally on that card. We did present them with such a card, and with multiple Visa cards (Debit), but they would not listen, and they basically threw us out of the shop (and they did the same with another traveller in the same situation) and took all our prepaid money. CarTrawler was just saying blah blah blah to our complaint. Searching the net, I can see that multiple people have been in the same situation with CarTrawler. I would give this 0 stars but wasn’t able!! I thought I was renting a car in Florence, Italy directly from SIXT rental but soon realized after being immediately charged over $1000 upfront that this was not the actual car rental agency but a third party. When we got to the rental agency the next day to pick up the car we found out I needed an international driver's license with SIXT so they said the voucher that Cartrawler submitted would not work.
So to remedy the problem my friend who was traveling with me had one but they needed Cartrawler to transfer the voucher to her name (especially since I had already paid for the voucher!)...The car rental agency got on the phone (very hard to get their number and their website was down for a day so I didn’t even have the voucher number!) and they refused to change the voucher and their excuse was that I was “late” picking up the car (that was already paid for and waiting for me!)….They have even disputed my dispute with AMEX about the charge saying I didn’t show up!! This is an absolute fraudulent site. Be aware of them when on sites like KAYAK. We had to recharge the rental with my friend and it was 25% cheaper direct with SIXT and they didn’t charge her card until after the trip was completed.

I was told I needed to contact CarTrawler for a refund and the rental car company charged me taxes and fees and placed a $500.00 hold on my card. When I contacted CarTrawler I was told they could not refund me the difference of what I had paid. This is illegal to charge for services not rendered. I spoke with a manager who basically said it’s too bad my flight was canceled and the company is not going to issue a refund. He sent me information about filing a complaint however it will take 20 business days to resolve the complaint with no guarantee for a refund. This company does not need to be in business. I thought I booked a rental car through Budget. I travel to Venice, Italy for vacation with my family and we all show up to the Budget office to pick up the car for a 1.5 week vacation across the country. To our surprise, this Budget office is CLOSED, with a hand written paper sign on the door. So I call the Budget office assigned and no answer. I walk next door to the Europcar office to see if they can help.
The Europcar attendant was absolutely fabulous, calling Budget at the Venice airport for me, where they confirm the office I was scheduled to pick up my car being closed. They said I could cancel by booking or go to the airport to pick up a Budget car there, so I ask the Europcar attendant if she has a car there, and she had exactly what I needed, so we ask the Budget attendant to cancel. He said I would have to do that directly with the company I booked with, as he could see I did not book directly with Budget. So, we take his e-mail and name, rent a Europcar and start to enjoy our trip through Europe. That first night, I contact the rental company that I booked (CarTrawler) via e-mail, as that was the only way to do so. It took them days to get back to me. When they did, they asked for information of what happened.
To make a very long story short, after at least 5 e-mail back and forths and multiple requests from me to TALK with a representative, they state that they will close my inquiry because they have determined that the Budget office is open and that I was a "no-show". I send them a Google search of the Budget office location which clearly states they are closed and send them a Budget website link and picture which shows that the office IS CLOSED, and they still say that they have deemed my refund request to not be valid because they are told by Budget that the office is open!! Seriously!! I ask THEM for proof now. And of course, no more responses or communication. I have all the documentation to prove it. There went my $1000+ to a SCAM COMPANY. How are these companies allowed to operate is beyond me. DO NOT USE THEM!! I will now look to work with Budget to see what they can do.....

Even after providing my credit card statements proof of express payments to have more credit available. Well how could this be if American Auto Rental never handled my credit card because I never presented it to the rep. What I did present to the rep was the reservation and payment confirmation for the rental and the auto insurance. The rep said my insurance was not valid and that I needed to buy their insurance that cost almost $1,200.00 which was ridiculous!!! And demanded my refund on the rental and said could not do that process where I needed to call Cartrawlers.
I suggest we all file a state lawsuit against this company which what I see continues to steal consumers money and advertise and verbally advise false information to get the rental paid and thereafter do not care about customer satisfaction and most of all refunding auto rentals that did not take place for one reason or another. Well I will be fighting for my refund and will not give up until it is returned. Anyone already started the research for the state lawsuit please update me. I appreciate it.

I rent cars frequently and this is by far the worst experience I have ever had. I booked a hotel through Hotel.com and they had a link to a good deal (so I thought) on a rental car. The price was good so I booked and payed up front as required. When I arrived in Houston, we took the shuttle to the car rental company, Hertz, only to discover that my car had been booked in League City 16 miles away.
After 45 minutes of trying to get it straightened out with Cartrawler, to no avail, we had to take a 30 dollar Uber to pick up the car. When we got to Hertz in League City, there was no one at the office. We called and then waited another 30 minutes for the guy to arrive. During the pickup process, the Hertz rep, who was aggravated that he had to leave where ever he was and come to the office so I could pick up my car, gave me no paperwork on the car. Did not go out and inspect the car. Simply gave me the keys and told me to click the fob to see which car in the shopping mall parking lot was my rental. This was 3 hours after landing. The car we rented died on us at least 10 times while driving it. We were unable to get a hold of anyone to see what could be done and just crossed our fingers that it would start back up each time.
When I took the car back, of course no one was there. Left the keys in the drop box and took a 40 dollar Uber back to the airport. After returning home, I discovered that there was an extra 66 dollar charge on my credit card. I filled the car with gas and cleaned the inside before returning so I have no idea what the extra charge is for. I had already paid for the car when I booked the rental. I have no receipt from Cartrawler, or from Hertz. My great deal on my rental ended up costing me 166.00 over the original amount that I paid due to the Ubers I had to take to pick up the car and get back to the airport, and to the unknown charge. Eventually managed to contact them through ** and have been corresponding with them since trying to get a refund. They are sticking to the small print terms of rental in that cancellations must be through their portal. They have so far ignored the fact that I notified them by email and that had they responded telling me to try their portal in the 5 days before rental pick-up was due I could have fulfilled the terms of the contract and got my $700 back. I have asked for the matter to be escalated but so far no joy. They, unlike all the other companies we booked things through for our trip, are unwilling to help out during this pandemic. I would not recommend or trust this company under any circumstances.

They charged the money for not providing any services, their ‘fool’ list of docs didn’t consist of international permit. What’s the reason to earn on me not offering the value, while cheating with the instructions? Anyways, the companies sustain based on their abilities to treat the customers whenever they are in need. No Europcar, no Booking.com charged the unfair way they did, what is then their competitive advantage on the market. Rental and booking companies reimburse in many cases: if you even forget your docs or they even agree with hotels/car rentals not to charge their customers if they could not appear. This is the right way to do the business and to share positive customer experience, and then people will use their service again and again. As an agent CarTrawler did nothing, except taking advantage at my cost. Don’t use their services, let’s not let them survive as a company.

Agent checked card and document then kept asking why I need 7 seats 5X. He went in and out half an hour to come back to me and said he can't see me and showed me a pc reads ''customer not found.'' He told me I would received a refund within 5 days. No refund now 2 months. Called 100 times no success. They promised me a refund or compensation due to amount and what happened but never got one. I contacted Hetz and Hertz apologised and offered me a full refund.
Cartrawler told me I should not deal with Hertz direct, but bank refunded me now the sent documents to bank to say I didn't go to collect the vehicle hence no refund. I asked for a cctv evidence. They refused to deal with me telling me I should deal with my bank. My bank now telling me to give back the money as transaction was valid and to deal with Ctrawler. They can't help. I am sending them to court.. £383.00 gone. Today I spoke to them and they told me the Debit card can't be used with full size, premium or luxury, although mine is not one of them because in the booking they marked what falls onto those category, so they asked me to open the case again as case was closed and they can no longer deal with me because of bank involvement. So keep clear. Luckily I had EU travel insurance which also await my settlement until today as I lost ferry ticket and hotel booking non refundable.
I have screen shot to support my case that it was not among the car which can't be hired by debit card. They also confirmed to me that I was advised that debit card was accepted by their agent so I don't know the issue why they are not refunding, I am a HMRC staff and I can confirm car hire are making lots plus bonus for employees when reaching the target so this is the trick to get bonus.

I used Car Trawler via TUI to book for a car for 1 week commencing 24/06/19 for a 1 week trip in Costa Rica (Liberia). The car hire fee was £171.50 and additional insurance for damage refund insurance was £52.48. On arrival in Costa Rica, the car rental agent (Sixt) did not accept this insurance policy and offered me their approved version for $160 USD. Sixt was insistent that they could not accept the policy offered by Car Trawler (AXA) as it was not approved. I contested the fact that Sixt was one of the many companies referred to by Car Trawler and I found it hard to believe that they offered insurances that was unacceptable to the very same car rental companies they quoted for on their website.
On returning to UK, I contacted Car Trawler to request a refund for £52.48 selling me an insurance policy that was not accepted/unsuitable to the very car rental company they quoted me. I was amazing was that I paid for the entire transaction, i.e. car rental and damage waiver insurance on the Car Trawler site. So it appeared as if all products sold for that particular chosen car package would be acceptable to Sixt or indeed any car packages offered on the Car Trawler system. Below is a copy of the email response from Car Trawler-
"Thank you very much for your correspondence in relation to the experience you had when renting with SIXT Franchise (CR) through CarTrawler. I can confirm that the insurance you paid for was an optional product purchased at the rental desk and signed for on your rental agreement. All the charges included in final rental price would have been specified on your rental agreement that must be read and agreed to in order to proceed with the rental of the vehicle. Therefore, we are not in a position to offer a refund. The insurance that you purchased provided you with complete cover for the duration of your rental as well as greatly reducing your excess deposit. I realise that this may not be the outcome you had hoped for, but I can assure you that it was reached in line with the Terms & Conditions of your rental agreement."
I understood their logic but what they should have been clearer on was the fact that the AXA insurance they (Car Trawler) sold was a product that might not be suitable to some or all of the car rental companies they quoted for on their site! Why on earth would someone want to purchase an insurance that might not be acceptable to the car rental company? More importantly, why did they offer a policy that was unacceptable for companies they quoted for?
I have not pursued this any further as the time it would take to recover the £52.48 would not be cost effective. I am writing this review so other consumers should consider double checking with the relevant car rental companies on terms before paying and booking via Car Trawler. This could well save one financial and mental stress at the very beginning of their holiday!

The directions we had from CarTrawler did not match what the company wanted and needed from us. The company we ended up with - Allied Car and Truck Rental - was inefficient in the extreme, with people waiting in line for hours, and one person working the desk while several were hanging about outside on the lot.
We did not end up saving much money because we were more or less forced to buy a toll package that was very expensive. The only option we were offered was to figure out how to get off the highway and go around the tolls, which was impractical. Communication was limited with both CarTrawler and our rental company. Neither was easy to get ahold of nor did they have clear answers to my questions. The car we got was not what I ordered. I specifically asked for a sedan but got a hatchback. The car required locking each door individually - I had no idea they still made cars like that - a feature we only discovered after something had been stolen from our car. Our stupidity, for sure, but I'm still appalled the car had such limited options. Return was the only thing that worked fairly well, which is why I'm giving two stars instead of 1. I rented a car through Alaska Airlines on a recent trip to Seattle. They offered me a competitive rate and I paid for the rental in full. When I got to the Seattle Airport to pick up my car, I was denied the rental at Budget Car rentals because it went through a 3rd party, CarTrawler, which apparently in Ireland based. Because I did not carry an Irish or international driver's license, my paid in full rental was denied unless I was willing to pay an additional $150 to secure the rental. I opted to cancel the rental and immediately contacted CArTrawler for a full refund. I was told that I was not eligible for a refund because I did not follow their rules, which included taking a copy of the voucher, provide a valid driver's license, proof of identification and a valid credit card.
I went armed with all of that when I went to pick up the car. At no point in the documentation sent to me, was I ever informed that I needed an international license to rent a car. From my perspective, I was an American citizen, renting a car through an American company, Alaska Airlines. There was never any indication that this was a 3rd party company. After going back and forth with CarTrawler's customer service, they have stopped communicating with me. All of my interactions have been via e-mail, so I have copies of all of our conversations. I'm still out my $163.00 with no refund in sight.

They charged me for 4 days rental with without ever taking the car!!! I booked the car at 12 pm for a 3 pm pick up. At 2:45 I was given the runaround through the original 3rd party website “JustFly” trying to cancel while I was at the rental car company physically. By the time they transferred me to 3 different people and finally getting me over to “Cartrawler”, the rep said it was too late for me to cancel and no refund is available! I asked to speak to someone who can help me she insisted I call back in an hour or to wait an hour.
No one from management returned my call. This is ridiculous!! I will continue to speak out on this on any review website I can until I am properly addressed! “JustFly” and “Cartrawler” will not get away with this!!! Let’s see if getting over on one customer is worth the loss of a good business practice reputation... Very disappointed in my experience... Plus the rental car company was supposed to be at the airport in Miami, however, it was in some back alley in a sketchy trailer. The whole experience was very bad... Ok to Google, Yelp, and any other review site I can find. I gave “Cartrawler a whole week to get back to me." They did not. Do better!!

CarTrawler wouldn't refund anything. So fully paid, no car. To me that seems theft and having a clause stating 'if the vehicle is not released due to a late arrival no funds will be reimbursed' is illegal. Claims are rejected and complaints impossible if you don't live in the UK and rent in the UK. As late arrival is a risk. I advise new customers to consider the risk renting through CarTrawler.

When I asked the lady about that, she told me it is "airport taxes", which is not true because as I figured out today, the charge in the attached contract states "C. Extra V. Diesel". As found out in the rental terms of GOLDCAR, represents "ExtraDiesel surcharge" which "could be applied if the customer voluntarily requests a vehicle running on diesel fuel, for 2.5 euros per rental day. If there are only diesel cars in the Group chosen by the customer, at the pick-up time, this charge will not apply." Note that I was never given the option to chose a diesel or gasoline car!

After expressing my dissatisfaction with the vehicle, I was told the contract would be voided and I would be given a full refund. They did not offer me another car, and I agreed to the refund. I was told to call CarTrawler and they would promptly process my refund... NOT!
CarTrawler repeatedly asked me for irrelevant information claiming it was necessary or they could not process my refund. They asked for a copy of my contract first... Not sure why they didn't have it already. After I sent that, they claimed they still could not give me a refund because I did not provide my flight number. I explained I did not arrive by airplane. After that they asked me for a copy of the credit card I used, along with a bank statement showing I had sufficient funds available to cover the ($40) rental. This was beyond ridiculous as I reiterated to them that the rental was pre-paid and they already had my money.
Overly burden the customer with ridiculous request after request until they stop calling. That seems to be their business plan when it comes to returns. ZERO STARS IF I COULD! I went to Florida as an insurance adjuster to help with Hurricane Michael. I booked my rental online through Thrifty - it gave me an option to pay in full online for a cheaper price. I'd have to pay the taxes at the rental counter. I opted for this as it was about $40 cheaper. I reserved the vehicle for 14 days. I had to leave early after 7 days. I returned the vehicle at Thrifty and they said that the keys would be all they needed. I've rented cars before and returned it early and always got a refund. I reached out to Thrifty after not seeing a refund in my credit card statement. They said I had to reach out to CarTrawler as the payment was made to them.
I reached out to CarTrawler and they said: "However, having reviewed your reservation, according to the terms and conditions, we are unable to issue any refunds in relation to unused days: '...Neither do CarTrawler provide refunds for vehicles returned early.' Nevertheless, considering the circumstances we will contact the rental location in order to verify whether they will issue such a refund."
They apparently do not process refunds for unused days and will contact Thrifty to ascertain whether it is possible to provide a refund. I've spoken to Thrifty and they said that it was CarTrawler's responsibility. This is convoluted and me, as the consumer, was not aware that I was paying the funds to CarTrawler when I paid the rental. THIS IS AWFUL and extremely UNFAIR to the consumer!

This rental service literally sends automated responses when you need help. I have not even been able to even locate a phone number to customer service, so I’m left just emailing- which usually takes 48 hours for an automated response. They are an unethical company, and don’t work with customers who run into issues. It’s not about the money to me at this point, but about their blatant disregard for the customer and doing what is right. I’m am still baffled at how they responded to my issues at the airport.

Don’t let 3rd parties cheap rates pull you unless you are 100% sure you will not have any changes to your travel schedule. I will always rent through a direct company moving forward. There is always the exception where you get it a little cheaper, but issues with no name rental car services can put a huge damper on your trip. It did for me. I did this through the Norwegian site on 20 July 2018, and I was told that a full refund would be forthcoming within 10 days.
Based on reading the reviews I've just read here (and elsewhere), I actually went back and checked my August Amex statement to confirm that the money had been refunded. Indeed, it was, and this was done on the same day I had cancelled (20 July 2018). So, not all bad for CarTrawler... But I've decided NOT to use them again, based mainly on the numerous absolute horror stories I've read about people who have been thoroughly messed around by this company and its car rental company partners. The confirmation email stated I should expect to be greeted by the driver in the arrivals hall holding a sign with my name. After claiming my baggage, I entered the arrivals area but there was no driver in sight. I waited 10 mins and then decided to give the telephone number quoted on the confirmation email a call. The number did not connect with the automated telecoms message informing me that the "number I called wasn't a valid number". I asked the airport information desk if they could try for me. They received the same message. They even searched for the taxi firm online for me but that only turned up the same number we'd both tried.
After 45 mins later, I called my colleagues stating I'd been left stranded at the airport - who eventually arranged for a local taxi to pick me up some 30 mins thereafter. Needless to say, I was late for my meeting which did not go down too well. I've logged a complaint on CarTrawler's customer service portal. It still states "issue created" after 6 days which means no one has actually looked at it yet. Reading other reviews here, I don't have high hopes of a speedy response. I paid for the service 2.556, 48 CZK and the service should provide the company target rent. In about 20 minutes, the worker arrived and I submitted the above reservation and I was orally informed by the wish to arrange supplementary insurance. From the offered options I opted for insurance of EUR 18 per day. Dealing with this worker was a bit difficult, because he almost did not understand English or German. For example, the term insurance-"Versicherung" I had to translate into itaštiny.
The employee made a phone call to the supervisor and then filled out a green car rental form. No written record has been taken on the requirement to arrange insurance. Only later after the takeover of the vehicle I found that the contract for the lease of the vehicle is concluded in the name of another company-Essepirent.
This would suggest a possible my mistake or inattention to the effect of paying the rental price of Vozilad once again. Fortunately after my Urgenci erroneously debited amount of insurance, the company Essepirent says that my claim price insurance is not justified, that I was mistaken and that the correct amount of insurance is 40 Eur per day. I returned the car on the agreed day (June 22, 2018) with no damage and a full tank. No record was taken about the handover of the vehicle. The communication procedure provided by the vehicle was that the car parking at the designated location of the parking lot and the keys by putting it in the box under the Rental Counter window.
On 25.6.2018 I saw the company Essepirent, Trapani debited the amount of 3.173, 42 CZK which is 30 * 4 = 120 Euros. On 28.6.18 I claimed the amount of the debited amount by email and asked for an explanation. Since my report remained unanswered, I demanded a 3.8.2018 refund of overpaid 48 euros for my account [120-(4 * 18) = 48 EUR] to 20.8.2018. On this report, Essepirent responded on 3.8.2018, stating that the first email was not received, that I remember the thing erroneously and that the correct amount of insurance is €30 per day.
On 12.8. I once again asked repeatedly about sending a document demonstrating the legitimacy of the amount charged for insurance 30 euros per day – it remained unanswered! No time to argue, a Friday, August 3 it’s rush vacation, there is a lot of people at the Avis desk... and by the way, the Fiat 124 is not available, I wonder if it was available once. The CarTrawler trap is well built, CarTrawler has plucked me. This provider (CarTrawler) is a ripoff, without regret, it is a beautiful scam. This company does not like customers. I arranged for a hire car at Bordeaux Airport thinking that all would be fine. Not so. Getting the car was a nightmare and to add insult to injury was charged twice what I was quoted. Would not advise anybody to use this company but stay with the better well known and trusted ones. Hertz is an expensive option but they do look after you well and seem to be a lot more professional especially in France.

We've logged the issue and will work on making sure this doesn't happen in the future!" This error message was not corrected for over two weeks, so I tried writing the company. CarTrawler is an outfit you should stay well clear of. Its 'free car hire' guarantee is a scam. I booked a Europcar through CarTrawler for €205; five minutes later I found the same car on Europcar's own website for €130. I submitted the claim for free car hire. They rejected it on the basis that whilst it was indeed 35% cheaper to book directly with Europcar, CarTrawler's insurance excess was higher! Don't believe CarTrawler's free cancellation offer either, I recently had to cancel a Hertz rental I had booked through CarTrawler, to be told that whilst the cancellation was free, there was a €50 administration charge. They are bunch of crooks that you should avoid like the plague.

I booked and prepaid for a small car. Firstly on the email it stated clearly that a deposit to be held on a credit card is £400 which I had. I also had all the documents required. I could not get onto the voucher as it kept coming up invalid so as it stated on the email I printed and took the email. On arriving to pick up the car I was told I had to have a credit card with OVER £1,000 to hold (which I did not as the email stated £400). To reduce the amount to £400 I would have to pay another £190 on top of the €107 paid for the smallest car for 3 days. I could not take the car because I didn’t have £1,000 on my card and I couldn’t not afford £190 extra as I was on a budget for the weekend.
The girl was very rude stating that it was my fault, I have phoned customer service up who sent an email with a link for a ticket to request refund - THE LINK WAS NOT ON THE EMAIL! I have since read reviews that say they rip you off, they are a dishonest company and con you from the start! THIS IS TRUE!!! Whenever I book again in future no matter what company I will read reviews. DO NOT BOOK WITH THESE - hence I am not expecting a refund even though I did not take the car so add to the list - they are thieves!!! This company is a sham. Go to Avis!!!

I was sent a contract by email with a pick-up number for the car.
When I arrived at Kennedy and went to Avis to pick up the car, they had never seen such a reservation number. The number, they said, did not pertain to Avis, and they said I was nowhere to be found in their reservation listings. They had no record of me and did not have my reservation money. I had to rent a car from scratch from them, but only after they declared that my credit card was at its limit and required my wife's card. Why was it at its limit? Because I had rented an expensive car for 3 weeks already from Avis! We were given a dirty and quite old car in bad condition. I called and emailed "Cartrawler" to no avail. This is what happened to us, after renting a car over Ryanair that turned out to be Buchbinder RentACar/Berlin. First they did not have the car from the class we‘ve paid for 2 months ago. When I said, that I did not want a more expensive car, they told me that they did not accept my card (I‘ve rented all over Europe with this card without any problem). Then they told me, that they would accept my card only, when I take an insurance that brings my risk down to 0%. I already paid 2 months ago for an extra insurance over the Ryanair car-rent page to have the 0% risk. But they said, that would not count for them. Then they said, that taking the insurance with them, would cost me 35€ a day. So they wanted another 7x35€ = 245€.
We felt extorted, but we had no other choice and they said if we denied we would lose the about 190€ we already paid. So I paid it. Then they said, as a compensation, they would give us a better car, which they did. Then they offered us that we buy the gasoline with them, reduced and bringing it back with an empty tank. We paid 55 liters for a tank, they said would fit 60 liters. They would give us 5 liters for free... because of the gasoline that would remain in the tank.
We left with the car... After 585 km we only had gasoline left for 158 km. The usage for 100km was indicated at 6.4/100km. I made a photo of the indication on the dashboard. So I calculated that there have been only 42 liters in the tank. And having a quick look at the internet, I found out that the tank has only 52 liters (Ford Ecosport 1.0) So I know I had been cheated for 18 liters of gasoline). When I brought back the car, I‘ve told them, that they cheated me. And then they went very rough and sent me away, telling me that I had to complain to the Ford company. I did not rent a car from Ford but from them. Later I looked up in the internet the code on the bill for the insurance of 245€. And I found out, that that was over 3x the normal price from that insurance company. We travelled all over the world, renting cars, but we never have been treated this way, by any company...

I rented a car with Cartrawler in Sardinie 27 April to 4 May, 10 days upon returning I was suddenly charged by A&C broker, on behalf of Sicily cars with an additional cleaning charge of 143 Euro excluding VAT. Please note I agree, there was sand in the car, but it had been raining in Sardinia for 3 days and not to be avoided, also to be cleaned in minutes. I would like to bring up the following arguments to why, I dispute the charge and the amount charged.
The charge: First of all it was not brought to my attention that interior cleaning was mandatory before returning the vehicle when picking up the vehicle by the employee explaining the rental procedure to me. Secondly also the documentation that was handed over (I have attached the exhibits) in none of these documents it’s stated clearly that cleaning of the car interior is mandatory. Lastly I want to point out that we the employee complained upon returning the car about the sand in the car, I offered to vacuum the car and clean it inside. I had more than enough time to do so before my flight departure, but this was refused by the employee.
On the amount of the charge: When returning, and discussion on my right to clean the vehicle, the employee confirmed that the charge would be between 20 and 30 euro excluding VAT. This might be acceptable, to my surprise this charge is actually much higher. In the documents attached the cleaning fee (see attachments) is 30 Euro and not 88. Therefore I do not understand why this charge is suddenly much higher. I think Cartrawler works with dodgy partners that ensure that rental is low costs, but tricks like this make up for it. Do not rent via Cartrawler if you don't want surprises. The website of cartrawler works so bad that complaining is nearly impossible and calling is not possible.

Yet another case of why no one should ever use CarTrawler for any booking. I booked a car in Cape Town through CarTrawler for which they charged me a "Car Hire Deposit" equal to 18% of the total rental price. I thought this was no problem as it was a Deposit which can only mean that they would pass it on to the actual car rental company, Europcar and it would be eventually set off against the final rental cost. Not so, CarTrawler pockets this "Deposit" and never passes it onto Europcar who having never received it obviously then charges the me the full rental. After several email exchanges CarTrawler simply refused to refund the deposit in effect claiming that although it was stated to be "Car Hire Deposit", it was in fact a booking fee for their benefit.
Europcar, because it required me to pay the full amount upon completion of the rental, couldn't be bothered to tackle CarTrawler on its deceptive practice of labelling the payment a "Car Hire Deposit" since it was fully paid. CarTrawler is guilty of fraud and deceptive business practices by stating the charge is a deposit. When we arrived to pick up the car, Payless would not accept the insurance policy purchased through CarTrawler. I then contacted the insurer (fortunately I had a phone number and even more fortunately, they answered.) and the insurance was canceled and a refund of the $126.00 was issued. Payless required insurance and other fees that added up to US$931.55, which was paid by another member of our party.
There were language issues, but we believed that the $931.00 we had to pay before they would give us the car included the cost of the car rental. After we returned from our trip, it was discovered that the $931.00 was charged on top of the $625.00 rental fee - the added fees, the added fees, which included a US$389.87 charge for insurance that we specifically rejected, were nearly one-and-a-half times the advertised rental fee making the total rental charge US$1556.00(!). When I contacted CarTrawler via the internet they responded with documentation listing the charges and disclaimed any responsibility for the insurance option we had rejected. I entered my details, I put in my credit card information, and reserved the car with no issues. What I didn't know is the 3rd party transaction company in the background that has completely unrealistic terms on their own site, that are not coordinated with the terms on the rental company's site. When it came time to pick up the rental car, I did not have enough credit on my reserved credit card. That would have been fine, except this is my only credit card (credit limit only $300) and I had no other ways of paying. I pay in cash ALWAYS, and this was not an options because of the unpublished $350 holding fee they put on your card. They would not allow to pay an additional amount in cash, only credit card.
Now, since I had to cancel my reservation, they have kept the $75 deposit on my credit card. In no way are they refunding my money. They say their policy is a 48 hour cancellation notice and since I "canceled" on site at time of pick-up, this was not in the windowed time frame. Again, I say this nowhere in the rental agreement at time of checkout. The only thing the rental agreement eludes to is having enough of a credit line for additional charges, which I took as the remainder of the balance, not a $350 hold on my card.
The amount of time I have been emailing them (the only option to address this), has well cost them over the $75 in man hours to do the research I have requested and replies they have had to type. I no way, shape or form, will I ever deal with any car rental company that uses CarTrawler for their back-end transactions. I booked Toyota Rav4. We went to pick up car from Cancun Mexico. We waited there 2 hours to get the car. They said, "We don't have Rav4. We can give you 4 door sedan Kia car". We are 5 people and we had 3 luggage and 5 handbags. I paid for SUV not for car. They asked me on the counter. We have to pay third party insurance $350 more. When I booked the car was included third party insurance. On the web when I booked the SUV was showing Toyota RAV4 or slimmer. Why they want to give me small car. She said, "If you don't want car we give you money back". I paid in August 2017. I emailed them too many times. Now they said, "We are not refund you money". I lost $389.00 CAN. Please don't rent car from this company. I looked all the reviews. All is bad. Stealing money from people.

BEWARE of this company that operates under various names like Car Trawler, Argus Car Hire, Etrawler etc and pays people to put good reviews on all forums! Just google the above names and see all the complaints that pop up. They are all the same company and we got SCAMMED by one of them before we realized they are all the same! DO NOT USE THEM. We booked a Mazda Demio or similar, AT, AC, class of car. We got an old junk Nissan Tiida that did not suit any of our needs and the AT was useless since the car wouldn't go up any inclination at all without manual gear change.
There were scratches, dents, and markings all over the car. The AC vents were shut off and broken so it did not work. They promised us monetary compensation because by their own admission we should not have been given this car. The service company agreed to refund but were waiting for Argus/Car Trawler to pay them and Argus said they won't do anything about it! It's been weeks and we haven't heard a word from anyone despite repeated mails and calls. I strongly suggest you get yourself a better a car rental company and don't book via Argus/Car Trawler/Etrawler. Do not get fooled like we were since it was our first time!

I made a booking for a 7 seater Chevrolet Tahoe or similar under Booking Reference Number: ** Confirmation no. **. My pickup was scheduled for pickup at Dubai international airport T1 from Dollar Rent a Car. I went 15 mins before pickup and was informed that they have the booking but they don't have any 7 seater. I had paid in full in advance for a 7 seater four days ahead of pickup day, but despite this, no 7 seaters were reserved for me. When I called CarTrawler, to complain on this non-availability, I was asked a bunch of question like, did I go to the pickup before my pickup time, did I go the correct local rent a car company, after I had answered these questions, I asked the agent if she would like to speak to the local rent a car company, and they spoke.
Now CarTrawler is convinced that there are no 7 seaters, she asked if I can settle for a saloon car (4 seater). I disagreed and asked of either 7 seater or immediate refund. I was told refund will take more than 20 days after they investigate if the issue was due to my fault or rent a car faults. CarTrawler are unprofessional who are not fit to run a rent a car portal. Please avoid them. The only reason I choose them was due the fact I traveled in Emirates airline and CarTrawler was the rent a car option on their website.

This company is a big sham! We booked a car through CarTrawler for our 9 day holiday in the UK with our 3 children aged 8, 11 and 13. Our flight to Gatwick was delayed and when we tried to call the number on our booking confirmation no-one answered the phone. By the time we got to the rental desk it was closed for the night. We then went to speak to one of the other rental companies at the airport who helped us call CarTrawler to let them know what had happened. We were told they couldn't guarantee us a refund and that we had to send in a complaint.
Thinking (naively) that they would refund us as we hadn't even picked up the car we hired a car from the other company for our holiday. After several e-mails and telephone calls with CarTrawler's rude and unhelpful customer advisers we were refused a refund of our approx. 700 British pounds. Of course this is direct theft but CarTrawler don't seem to care one bit about customer satisfaction or reputation. Steer well clear of these cowboys!

Avoid at all expenses... Hundreds of complaints and lawsuits are pending against that thief company. They offer discounted cheap PREPAID prices for rental cars. When you go pick up your car, OOPS NO CAR AVAILABLE for variety of reasons. The last car has a problem, the driver made an accident while testing your last car, credit card not debit card needed, accept inferior car or no car at all (e.g. manual rather than automatic transmission, or compact or economy rather than full sedan car).

I rented car through Ryan Air for a trip to Italy, who unbeknown to me used CarTrawler. When collecting my car in Italy they tried to charge me £90. (Sound familiar?) For what I didn't know. When I refused (as I had pre-paid the full amount) the chap at the desk refused the whole rental. I then had to rent a car from another company opposite leaving me out of pocket for the full rental amount I pre-paid. After complaining, so far CarTrawler are not interested despite this being a clear breach of contract in my view. So my next stop is the small claims court.

I see a pattern going on here. Therefore, although, I feel for all the others who got cheated by this company, I am not alone in this situation. I ordered a rental car through Thrifty, which sent me to their sister company Dollar Rental upon arrival. When I made my reservation, I was aware that most rental companies don't accept debit cards.
When I made my reservation with Thrifty, I saw that debit cards were acceptable. Unfortunately, I was blindly misguided to CarTrawler which accepted my rental reservation. They automatically charged a $90 deposit to my bank. Upon arrival to pick up my Rental Car at Thrifty who had me step next door to their sister company Dollar Rental, I presented my card at the desk. They denied my debit card which had sufficient funds to cover whatever additional deposit was needed.
I got very upset because I told them that I called the company to confirm that my card would be accepted. When I desperately tried to explain to them that I was told over the phone that debit cards were allowed, they said that the only way they are allowed was if I had a return flight ticket. I am a local. I was only renting a car to go out of town for 2 days. I didn't need a return flight. Apparently, it was a lost cause for me because I failed to read the fine print.
Before I finally went to another Rental Car Dealer that accepted my debit card, I asked them if and when my $90 deposit would be refunded. They told me yes. I was still so upset that I wasn't sure when I would get my refund. The day after arriving at my destination, I called the Thrifty main office to again ask if and when I would be receiving my deposit. They said it would take up to 3 days. I said okay thanks. More than a week went by and still, no deposit refunded.
It was then that I contacted my bank to investigate what the delay was in receiving my deposit. That is when they told me that the deposit came from CarTrawler. I had no idea that I was even dealing with a company called CarTrawler, which was located in a European country. All I knew was that I was TWICE told that I would be receiving my deposit.
My bank had me open up a claim against the company and gave me a temporary refund of the deposit until the case was settled. I gave them as much information that I could to present evidence. Sadly, on my behalf, I did not write down the name of the people who said I would get my deposit back. I was trustworthy in their word. I am now being informed that the temporary refund will be reversed. Therefore I have to pay CarTrawler $90 for a car that I reserved and showed up ON TIME to rent but was denied my rental. Now, I am not saying that the way CarTrawler does business is illegal but I will say this. THEY ARE CROOKED SCAM ARTISTS!!!
