The microwave LCD screen went. It is sad a brand like Viking makes an inferior product. The service visit and the repair cost is more than a new microwave. I wish they made a better product or at least had a better warranty...
Our Viking Microwave was 5 years old when it stopped working. We had an authorized service person come to fix it, at great cost - more than most new microwave ovens cost - but within six weeks it was broken again. We got the same repair service in, but again it broke. Now we need to pay for the company to pick up the microwave and fix it - all on our dime. When I suggested it wasn't worth it, the service guy agreed - "especially as it only costs $1400 to buy a new one!" - #nomoreviking.
The built-in microwave is just one year old (I moved-in in 12/2016) and the panel light is getting dimmer and dimmer. When I called Viking technical support they said the whole control board has to be replaced. And it is out of warranty. This microwave has been used less than once per day.
We have VHSO205SS. Apparently the unit is designed to self destruct. The first thing that happens is a fuse blows. There is no easy way to access this fuse or to reset it as circuit breaker (if it were a circuit breaker). So the repair guy gets the 98 pound Sharp microwave out of the wall and replaces the fuse. Remounts the unit. Opens and shuts the door, in which case the unit self destructs because it fears the user is exposed to microwaves. With an easy to reset circuit breaker, this problem would be easy to fix. But the Sharp/Viking way is to require us to buy a circuit board because the unit destroyed the board when it determined there was a door problem. Why not just lock the door and put a message, "Please repair the door sensor." Don't buy the 98-pound Sharp/Viking microwave.
We purchased the high end Viking Double French Door Oven model VDOF730SS approximately 16 months ago. Right away we noticed that the lower oven door did not close properly. Just walking past it could jar it a bit and cause the light to come on. Viking had a repairman come out and replace the hinges (this was a brand new oven mind you), but it did not alleviate the issue.
We put off requesting another repair but the warranty is only for 2 years, so we recently requested another repair. The repairman called this morning and said Viking had informed them that our warranty had expired. Our registration plainly states 2 years, and we've only had it for 16 months. We paid $$$ for that oven because of Viking's reputation for high quality. We are very, very disappointed.
I own Viking Professional cooktop, microwave, double oven and refrigerator with bottom freezer and love all of them. The cooktop is the best 4 burner that I have ever had and the oven bakes everything perfect. The refrigerator had only one problem and that was a recall, on the door hinge which was replaced. I have had them in the home since 2005.
Should have listened to the reviews when I bought the appliance. They have a big price tag to put the Viking Name on the facade and they don't deliver the monies' worth. After four years, we were forced to look for a replacement as the unit died. My previous GE Profile lasted more than 20 years. I found out that Sharp makes 80% of the microwaves and this is one of them... Needless to say, I am not impressed. Disappointing and inconvenience as this was installed as a built in. Word to the wise, stay away from this model and ALL Viking products.
We have a Viking hood (not vented out) combined with a microwave (model VMOR205SS). Basically, the hood does not function at all. I believe it is not a malfunction, but rather very poor product design. The areas to suck the air in are very small and located on the side. The filters look kind of big, but then the holes for the air are much smaller. I had a technician make sure it was installed properly and one of the things he did was create smoke by blowing out a candle and hold the candle really close to the vents (like two inches away; much closer than any air/smoke from pots or pans would be). The smoke barely moved towards the holes. It was shocking, really. It was just like a cloud hanging around. The hood never functioned well from day 1 – again, just because it's really poorly designed.
Our fire alarm often goes off while cooking (the fire alarm in at least 20 feet away and behind a corner) and the stove area gets very hot. We then cannot turn the ineffective hood off, because it stays on for as long as the hood area is hot. This makes talking very difficult as it is very noisy. Sometimes it takes an hour for the hood to shut down.
Purchased Viking stove and built in Viking microwave VMOS200 while kitchen was being remodeled so it sat in warehouse for around a year. Microwave installed and worked fine for about 10 years, and then it stopped heating the food. Researched cost of repairs and found them to be way high in cost because of labor and the cost of parts needed. Researched for similar issues, to find out that other with same problem as a result of some switches behind the keypad that were bad and needed to be changed.
As per Viking the little switch would cost around $22.00 ea. I worked as a purchaser of electronic components and I thought it sounded fishy for a switch to cost that much. I used to pay pennies for some switches and granted there are different types for different uses, but nothing could justify $22.00. I took the switch description and specs and fed it into Google and like magic had a list of them including the one from Viking. Found the one that matched my needs for less than $3.00 ea., sent description of it to Viking and asked what the difference was.
Viking's response was that there wasn't any difference between them and either one would be perfectly good to solve the problem with my Viking microwave. I purchased over $25.00 worth of switches because I wanted free shipping. Also, this model has 4 switches behind the keypad and I was not sure if one or more switches were bad. They are ripping off consumers with their "high" prices for appliances built by "Sharp" and sticking their "Viking" name on them and selling their "made in China" switches for $22.00. If this is not illegal, it should be!??? Does Consumer Affairs look into things like this? Wish they did.
I am now on week 6 and STILL l waiting for a LP to Propane converter that was suppose to be here before 3 weeks. The micro/Conv oven I ordered came in with dents in it AND it is now going on week 4 and I STILL do not have a micro/Conv oven. My kitchen is going on week 6 and due to VIKING I DO NOT HAVE MY KITCHEN COMPLETED!!! This is ridiculous!!! I WILL NEVER buy a VIKING product again. I am redoing a kitchen, I knew what I wanted and ordered EVERYTHING in plenty of time to have it completed BUT I DO NOT have my kitchen completed due to VIKING!!!
I purchased all new Viking products from our local dealer Probst Refrigeration in Effingham, IL and here I am still without a kitchen. I am NOT happy at all. My fridge came in with the Viking tag on crooked and still has not been replaced. My fridge control panel came in warped and it also has not been replaced. My fridge has been in over 2 months. I am VERY UNSATISFIED with Viking and I have only used my fridge. I do not have an order number or receipt yet as I still do NOT have WORKING appliances.
In 2012 we replaced a 14 year-old JennAir oven and microwave, which were old but working fine, with what we thought were upgraded Pro Viking products. We are sorely disappointed with both but I will focus on the microwave for now. VMOS201SS with trim kit came to over $1000 with taxes and looked lovely. However, the control pad is impossible to clean and the microwave oven, after 4 years of moderate use for reheating only, works intermittently. Sometimes it works... sometimes it is dead. Apparently there is a switch in the door that is malfunctioning.
Repair company that services Viking charged $160 to look at it and ordered a new part from Sharp, who manufactured this piece of junk. That was in early January. I am writing this in mid March with no part in sight. Repair company is not at fault. Viking is stalling sending the part. It is not worth replacing the part at this point so I will reuse the trim kit and order from a different manufacturer. Frigidaire FGMO205KF looks like it will fit and has good reviews. I will never buy another Viking product.
We purchase all Viking kitchen appliances. Every item ref, range, dishwasher and latest microwave had immediate service issues. We have still to get a working microwave now - seven months and still waiting. Do not consider Viking in your remodeling. The appliance only look good... absolute junk with a service department ready to say nothing and do nothing. Save yourselves the nightmare, buy anything else.
I needed to replace my VMOS200 Viking Microwave after less than 5 years of use. That model is now discontinued and has been replaced by model VMOS201. My oven was installed as a built-in using a VMTK301 Trim Kit (30" wide). The new model specs said that a VMTK302 Trim Kit was needed. This was a $400+ item and didn't match the trim on my other appliances. I checked the oven's dimensions and they were identical on the old and the new model. The dimensions of the mounting feet pattern were not given, and they could affect how the trim kit fits.
I went ahead and bought the replacement oven and measured the mounting feet dimensions. They were also identical to the old oven. So you DO NOT need to buy the recommended new trim kit. I can't vouch for other models, and it would be wise to measure the mounting feet on the new before you buy, if possible. Viking Corp was definitely remiss in not indicating that the old Trim Kit was totally compatible.
Viking VMOS200 died after 7 years of very little use - repairs quoted in the $200-$250 range... not worth it. So now had to find exact same size replacement because of its existing Viking Trim Kit ($400+ by itself) and which matches other trim kits in kitchen. Anyway, only new Viking unit that fits our trim kit is the VMOS201 unit - at a fixed price of $689 plus local tax. Took old unit apart and discovered it's basically a Sharp 2.0 cubic foot R530ES model... also obsolete. Note that the current Viking VMOS201 is also Sharp inside.
Did some research and found that Frigidaire uses the same Sharp box, model FGMO205KF - and it's half the cost of the Viking/Sharp VMOS201. All you give up is the heavier Viking stainless steel door and the Viking emblem. And if you must have the Viking emblem to match other appliances, just remove it from your old unit (use a hot hair dryer and "saw" the adhesive away with dental floss) and swap with the Frigidaire label. Hope this help other folks that don't want to pay $400. Too much for a commodity Sharp microwave.
I spent almost $1000 on a Viking Microwave/Convection Oven - this was a terrible mistake. Service techs have been out 6 times repairing fuses etc. The control panel also broke which trips my circuit breakers. A new panel costs around $500. Ridiculous. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy a Viking microwave, especially the ones that go over your stove. They get funked up with so much grease and don't ventilate at all.
Viking Professional Microwave VMOC205WH - Purchased this $1000 microwave as a Christmas gift for my wife in 2010. It replaced a 20 year old microwave (that still worked). Will not pop popcorn to this day. My wife noticed a place in back that looked like rust a couple of years ago. It has progressively gotten worse. I finally contacted Viking and told them that their stainless steel (inside) was rusting. I was given a Viking service center to contact. It had started sparking inside at rust occasionally. The tech came out and said he was not going to charge service charge because it was obviously a manufacturer defect. Stainless steel is not supposed to rust. He took photographers and turned in report to Viking. I called Viking and they said they needed photographs, to which I replied, the tech has already sent them.
Approximately two months later, I received a call from tech service center (not Viking) that Viking was waiting for receipt. I contacted the store that I purchased the microwave and after much searching, found invoice and forwarded it to tech center who sent it to Viking. Their response was it was out of warranty. I had a 20 year old $200 microwave that performed well, yet this top of the line Professional unit didn't make it two years and then would not stand behind their product. Getting ready to replace stove and refrigerator. Guess which brand that will not be considered? Very disappointed. The place where I purchased unit said that Viking's service was horrible. I can certainly testify.
Beware of Viking products. You are just buying a name. A few years ago we remodeled our kitchen. My wife wanted Viking appliances. The "Professional" grade micro is garbage! The release handle for the door quit working just after one year. Guess what? No warranty. $70 later I replaced the handle. Since 2006 when installed I have replaced and or repaired the handle six times. I'm repairing again today and that's when I decided to post this review. The micro is too cheap and never designed to go over the stove. I was assured there would be no problems as it was specially designed for that use.
About the same time the first handle broke our Viking gas stove started a problem with the igniter continuing to "click" even after the burner lit. Now we have TWO of the igniters doing the same thing. No warranty again. What a pain!!! No more Viking for us. We will be replacing the micro soon and I will be sure to read all the reviews on whichever one we decided on. What we thought we could show off and enjoy for a long time is now headed for Craig's List or the garbage pile.
We bought a new house with all new Viking appliances. I was excited as I'd always heard good things about Viking. Never will I have another Viking product now that I have actually experienced the quality, and have dealt with their customer service department. As for the microwave, it was only five years old when it caught on fire. Enough said.
We purchased the DMOC in 2007 (no longer available). Beginning in 2009 the problems began. First, a fuse. Then the wiring circuit was bad, followed by the door switch which was faulty.. was repaired. Then replaced a fuse again (same one), and it quit again a week ago. We called the Viking Southwest President and spoke with him. Unsympathetic, unapologetic, he informed me that microwaves only have an anticipated lifespan of 6.5 to 7.5 years - the 10 that we have read about! He stated he would get the record of repairs from their authorized service company (whom we did use!) and he would get back us. No call back. We called again and left a message 4 days after our initial conversation. No call back. Today, a new convection microhood from the competition was installed!
The control panel Sub-assembly needs to be replaced for $579. The door stopped opening about 2 years ago. The unit is only 5 years old. The warranty is one year and this is not a high end product, it’s just a high end brand name - misleading. Not built well. Stay clear of this brand.
This pertains to Viking microwave RDMOR200SST over the range unit. Purchased 12/12/13, installed 12/26/13, broken 1/18/14, lasted less than a month. Being in the HVAC field, I'm very familiar with many brands, reputable and not so reputable. I recently read a tech article about Viking's new owner (CEO) and it seemed very promising. Boy was I wrong and he has a quality control/customer service nightmare on his hands. I have dealt with many companies in the field and this is without a doubt the worst. $650.00 microwave and the micro switches I found in this unit I would not have used in my daughters $5 toy. You're probably saying, "Why did you fix this yourself, you voided the warranty." Have you ever seen some of these morons they call appliance repairmen? Believe me, I have and I wouldn't trust 95% of them. Problem - wife shut the door and the micro circuit tripped, reset, breaker held but the micro was dead.
Dissembled (only takes 2 minutes) and noticed 4 micro switches mounted on a cheap plastic rack, one of the switches the plunger was stuck in the down position. Upon inspection, the contact of the switch was welded together. These switches are rated at 16 amps, there is absolutely no way this switch holds 16 amps, no way. This is a fire hazard and a design defect. I removed all four switches and replaced with Ormon micro switches and NO THEY ARE NOT MADE IN CHINA , they are made in Japan. If I would have had warranty service tech perform this, they would have used the same cheap factory switches and the problem would have been reoccurring and caused more damage to the unit. For all of you do-it-yourselfers out there, change all of these switches out with quality ones. This will solve the majority of your issues with this unit.
I bought my Viking microwave (which is really made by Sharp) in August of 2013 and have already had to have the door switch replaced 3 times. It is only Nov. 4th, 2013! Guess what, today the microwave quit working for the 4th time. The same thing happens as the last 3 times. I can reset the breaker and as soon as I open the microwave door, the breaker trips again. So, I have learned to put the food in the microwave, flip the breaker and heat my food. As soon as I open the door to take out my food the breaker trips again.
This has to be some kind of joke. I paid a hefty price tag for my Viking appliances and have only had a working microwave for just over half of the time I've owned it. It always takes at least 10 days for parts to come and then 2 days to schedule a repair man. So, for a total of 35 days or so since mid-August until now, I haven't had a working microwave.
Now my Viking stove has an issue after just a few months. The center burner constantly tries to light. The burner is on with a flame, but the ignitor is constantly clicking and sparking, but that's another review.
The unit stopped working. Called PC Richards (where I purchased) since the unit is under warranty (bought only 7 months ago replacing an old one that died after 2 years). They came promptly to service. The service man took one look, took a photo and left. Pointed to burn mark in the rear after looking for 10 seconds. He said they would call in 48 hours. They called and told me they had determined that it couldn't be fixed and needed to be replaced, and they offered me a special discount price. I said it is under warranty. I wanted it replaced and it appeared as if the unit (all units) were defective and they knew about it. They repeated that they were offering a discount to buy another one. I refused. Looks like Viking knows the unit is defective and they don't want to own up to it. Seems as if this is dangerous if there was a "burn mark" in the rear.
We moved into our new house in 2006, which was custom-built with all-new Viking appliances, except for the dishwasher. We have had nothing but problems with all of the Viking products. The microwave has been repaired at least 4-5 times. Problems with the microwave are mainly due to "faulty door hinges or faulty door latches that melt over time". The oven has had the digital circuit board replaced twice, and the door hinges, as well. The circuit board was replaced once under warranty; the second time not so lucky: we were "out of warranty".
The refrigerator has been the biggest problem. It is the 36" refrigerator, built in with side-by-side freezer/refrigerator design. The seal around the entire unit has cracked, and to repair it would mean taking apart the entire door. The ice maker continually fails with ice melting altogether, so you have to reach inside and get ice, but the ice container has cracked, making it difficult to pull the bin out. I should mention that the ice bin, which includes the metal coil to push the ice out, is $462. However, at the time, we may have to junk the whole refrigerator since it just went out for the 2nd time last weekend. The freezer is working but the refrigeration side is not.
Viking Built-In Convection Microwave Hood - I have owned this appliance for less than 5 years and it is already inoperable. The machine started buzzing and burning. A repairman told me that it has defective parts. Nothing caused by us. Total cost for the repairs is $576. The warranty states that only one part is covered for 5 years - of course, not the parts I need. The company (Viking) wasted a lot of my time only to state the same, "Sorry, not covered." Frustrating. I could have bought a $50 microwave from any big box shop that would probably still be working today. Viking is supposed to be top of the line. What a joke.
I purchased a suite of Viking appliances five years ago. All of them seem to be functioning properly. The self cleaning cycle of the convection oven does over heat but I can control that. My major problem is with the microwave. Several weeks ago, I discovered that there were several rust spots in the oven. I called Viking and they said that it was my fault because of the way that I cleaned the oven. They never asked how I cleaned the oven but offered me a deal on a replacement. I am out of warranty. The deal was going to cost more than what I paid for the oven to begin with. When one pays a premium for anything, they should expect better service and longevity. Customer service is a joke. Please do your homework before purchasing any Viking appliances. At some point, the oven will need to be replaced. As I understand, Viking microwave ovens are made by Sharp. I just got rid of a Sharp oven that was built in 1974. There was no rust on the oven.
We bought a new Viking over-the-stove Microwave oven in October 2010 and installed it in November.
A month later the internal fan failed (it created loud whacking noise from the unit) so the oven would not work at all as a convection oven, and would only run five minutes or so as a microwave.
It took until February for the local dealer to get a replacement fan, and their technician managed to disconnect the vent hood fan and pull out the fasteners that support the front of the oven during the repair. So now we had no range hood, and a warning "Don't cook anything heavy till we get that fixed." The oven failed just before Christmas, and after numerous calls, emails, and letters, Viking has not found replacement parts or sent a replacement microwave; it's now mid-March.
Viking customer support will not return calls and does not appear to have any interest in customer satisfaction. The way the oven is hanging presents a continued risk to anyone cooking on the stove underneath the microwave.
We purchased a Viking Microwave, Model #DMOS200 in July 2008. In November 2009, just 4 months after the warranty expired, the main component of the microwave broke. Viking did agree to pay for that repair which was $400. Now one year later, November 2010, the main component of the microwave broke again! This time Viking will not cover the repair. My previous no name microwave lasted me over 10 years and this supposed top of the line microwave broke down twice in two years - give me a break.
I purchased a Viking microwave in 2007 after hearing great feedback about your products. We have a professional stove which requires a special microwave that can withstand the heat and has an incorporated hood so we purchased the convection microwave hood - DMOR. Since I have owned this microwave, I have had to replace two internal parts, the keypad has been replaced and now the door will not open. This microwave has been the biggest disappointment and the repair costs have now exceeded the initial purchase price of the microwave.
In addition, Dan Marc Appliance, the authorized service company that you recommended to me, told me that the parts that were broken when they serviced the unit were not covered under warranty so I paid over $500.00 for labor and parts. I just found out from Viking that they submitted a claim for the magnetron tube to Viking because that part was indeed covered. They also failed to mention to Viking that an additional part inside the microwave was replaced when the magnetron tube was replaced and that four months prior, the keypad was replaced so Viking now has no record of these repairs. Unfortunately, Dan Marc Appliance is the only repair company in my area that works on Viking microwaves so I had no choice but to call them again to fix my door.
I called them last Monday and the soonest appointment they had available was for today. No one called me to give me a window or time frame for when they would be here so other than dropping off my kids at school, I had no choice but to wait home for them all day. At 12:20 I still had not heard from them so I called to find out when they would arrive.
They said the technician had been here at 9:00 (while I was dropping off my kids at school) and that they can't come now until next Friday. I asked them why no one called me to give me some advanced notice and they just rudely responded that I was "** out of luck" because the service technician had been here at 9:00 and now wasn't available until next Friday. So what did I want to do? This is by far the worst customer service that I have ever dealt with. Dan Marc Appliance is extremely rude, unreliable and dishonest and I am completely shocked that an upscale, reputable company like Viking would ever associate themselves with a service provider that has such horrific customer service skills. Since they are listed on your website as a recommended authorized appliance repair center, I consider their workmanship and customer service a direct reflection of your company.
At this point, I am left with a "top-of-the-line" Viking microwave that once again is broken and I have no repair company to fix it. Having such a horrible reliability track record, paying to repair this microwave yet again feels like a waste of time and money. You should be embarrassed that within three years your microwave has had this many problems. I have owned appliances in the past that cost a third less than Viking which have had far longer longevity. After my experience with this Viking microwave and with the horrible service company with whom you have chosen to represent your company, I will never buy a Viking product again. More so, I will never recommend your brand to anyone and would discourage anyone from buying your products in the future. This has been an unfortunate and surprisingly disappointing experience with Viking and I hope that this letter at least increases your awareness about the poor craftsmanship of this unit and your poor selection of authorized service providers that your company recommends.
