What is Citibank?

Citibank is a global bank and one of the largest financial institutions in the world. It’s a subsidiary of Citigroup, a multinational investment banking and financial services corporation. Collectively, the company manages more than $1.7 trillion in assets, according to the Federal Reserve at the time of publishing.

Citibank has a significant presence around the world, with operations in almost 160 countries and territories. This global reach makes Citibank a preferred bank for international travelers and businesses, as it offers a seamless banking experience across different countries and currencies.

How does Citibank work?

Opening an account with Citibank is generally a straightforward process. Customers can apply for an account online, over the phone or in person at a branch location. To open an account, you need to provide personal identification information, such as your name, address, date of birth and Social Security number. You might also need to provide proof of income and employment.

Citibank offers a range of relationship perks to its customers, depending on the type of account you have and your level of banking activity. For example, some accounts offer higher interest rates or waived fees for certain transactions.

Citibank products and services

Citibank offers a variety of products and services, including checking and savings accounts, credit cards, personal loans, mortgages and investment products.

Checking accounts
Unless you’re a Citigold customer, all of Citibank’s checking accounts have monthly fees — but they can be waived when you meet certain account requirements.

Its Access Account, Basic Banking and Citibank Account packages are ideal for everyday banking needs, while its Citi Priority, Citigold and Citigold Private Client packages are best for those needing wealth management services. Perks vary by account package but can include ATM reimbursements, preferred rates, pricing and travel benefits, and more.

Savings accounts and CDs
The Citibank Savings Account comes with different perks, features and fees depending on which banking package you have (Access, Basic Banking, Citibank, Citi Priority, Citigold or Citigold Private Client). At the time of publishing, you can earn up to $5,000 when you open a new Citibank savings account.

Citibank certificates of deposit (CDs) and banking IRAs offer fixed interest rates for a set term. Rates vary by term, but select CD options have competitive yields that rival online banks.

Credit cards
Citibank offers a wide range of credit cards with rewards programs that offer cash back, points and miles. Some cards have no annual fee, while others offer premium benefits like airport lounge access or hotel benefits.

Citibank also has cards designed for balance transfers or those with fair or poor credit, making it easier to find a card that fits individual needs.

Loans
Citibank has several loan options for borrowers, including personal loans, lines of credit, mortgages and small business loans. It has several loan calculators on its site to help you estimate your borrowing power.

Citibank refused to investigate fraud on an older adults account. They do not protect older adults finances from exploitation or fraud. Citibank should not be able to have banking services in our country.

I was forced into a Citibank account because AAdvantage moved my credit card there. They couldn't set up a website for me to log onto for way too long. When I was able to log in it was after the payment due date. I paid off the balance immediately but then was charged interest for some reason. I immediately canceled my account. I was never able to talk to a real person. I have always paid my entire balance every month and have never paid interest on this (or any) credit card. This is especially annoying cause they charge $100 per year to have the card. I am going to miss accumulating miles on American Airlines, but it is not worth it. Dealing with this company was just awful.

I had my account closed due to "relationship with the bank while waiting on funds return from Walmart. About 4 months after the incident with Walmart I received a letter that the funds were being replaced into the account that Citibank was closing. I went into my local branch to withdraw the funds and they were unable to give me the money. A few weeks later when funds arrived in the form of a check I returned to the branch office to be informed that although it was a citibank check they couldn't honor it.

I have been with Citibank for two years now. I previously used WaFd (a total joke), Wells Fargo (the absolute worst), US Bank, Chase, and a local credit union, but Citibank gives the most grace when it comes to any hiccups with charges hitting your account. They even refunded $1200 earlier this year when a company in the Ukraine launched an attack on a lot of US accounts, when most other banks were refusing to reimburse these charges. I moved out of state to Salt Lake City, and there is no way to make cash deposits since they don't have brick & mortar branches here, but I still prefer them over all the others and plan to stay with them for life. The app is fantastic too - one of the quickest and easiest to navigate, and it made it super easy to lock my card each day following the Ukraine episode.

Citi Bank was my favorite credit card company until today. My spouse of 30 years just died. My bank, US Bank froze all my accounts when they were notified of his death, even though all accounts are joint. My payment to Citibank was returned. I made 2 additional payments since then for a total of $2000. Today’s payment of $1000 was placed on hold for 7 days. My account is not over the credit limit but my Citicard denies all charges until the hold is removed. Was at a store today and had to cancel transaction. How embarrassing. I called Citibank and they explained why as the reasons stated above. I explained that I was a customer for almost 50 years and never a payment missed. They explained that there was nothing they could do to help me. My loyalty and excellent meant nothing. They would treat there worse customer the same as me. How shameful.

Citibank has lost their ability to give good customer service. They will not help you and give you any credit for being a solid customer. A world without exceptions is no world at all. Citibank has developed its policies and will not put any humanity in their decisions period. Citibank has turned into another company who has lost its ability to benefit the community in which it serves. I feel like I have been labeled a criminal, due to no fault of my own. Citibanks, feet in the sand, approach to helping customers is sickening. I will not recommend Citibank no longer. They are just another company consumed with their bottom line and do not give a damn doing what is right Citibank, I feel so stupid, for give you my trust and loyalty. Shame on me for that and shame on you, for giving me the reason to write this review.

I have been with Citibank for 8 years. But in 2026, they had changed their disputes. They give you credit for fraud from nefarious websites, but then take it back and side with the fraudsters. Something has changed at Citibank; they no longer respect their good-standing customers. It is now all about the money, which makes me think they are a Bank in financial trouble, and without a recovery plan other than taking advantage of their customers. I'm afraid it's time to close up shop and take my business elsewhere.

They refused to refund a $29 fee for a returned check fee even though my payment processed after the failed first attempt. No grace given for a customer in good standing. Ridiculously high fee for a minor issue.

I was defrauded by a merchant on eBay. eBay denied my claim by relying on false tracking information provided by the seller. So I contacted CitiBank to reverse the credit charges. I received a conditional credit, which was reversed because eBay claimed I received the item. I filed a complaint with the BBB and eBay responded by admitting they erred in relying on the false tracking info. However, eBay claims they can't refund my money because I opened a dispute with CitiBank.

CitiBank refuses to return my money because they say eBay is responsible. CitiBank offered me a portion of the money, but not the full amount. It is next to impossible to contact either company via phone as they have systems in place to stonewall the consumer. CitiBank also threatened to take me to collections if I didn't pay them the amount I was ripped off for. So as it stands, I'm out $262.20 for a product that I not only didn't receive, but that was never even shipped. CitiBank DOES NOT stand behind their customers. Avoid this bank at all costs.

I am very disappointed with my branch on 2215 Rampart Blvd, Las Vegas. In the last 3 weeks I have visited the branch and it never open on time! Today 4/11/26 the bank was open at 10:10, and yesterday was 10:06, and 3 weeks ago was 10:05. The services were terrible and one banker was arguing with me because he wanted to go home early. I have moved my big amount of deposit to chase. I was very pleased with my old banker in San Carlos California. compare with this branch is day and night.
