Do not rent truck for a long distance drive. The cab is extremely tight. All the safety alarm BS is annoying. It warms on lane, which is ok. But do the silent not a loud alarm. Can’t adjust how close you can be to another car in front of you or will continue to beep. It will do a hard brake if thinks you are too close which it’s hard to even get close because of the warning system. It’s a very high loading your furniture. Seat belts didn’t function right. Can’t go faster than 70mph. Uhaul’s are passing you like a Daytona race car. No pick up and the shift points on the tranny are off. It will wait to downshift until last minute when your rpms drop to 1700. The steering wheel feels like you’re holding onto a washing machine. The only good was the price. Possibly customer service. Go to Uhaul. First as last time with Penske.

The only reason I am leaving a bad review is because I left a pair of $250 pair of sunglasses in the truck. I am positive the person checking the truck took them and of course not admitting to it. Why would they? They just made out and it would cost them their job. If not for that I would say the truck ran excellent with no issues and was clean. However when I gassed up I am told because diesel foams up when filling so the tank didn't quite fill. Therefore I was charged $8 a gallon. Almost double you would pay at a gas station so beware of this. When I called about sunglasses they simply said no not in truck.

I'll never rent another PENSKE truck here again. They sent me in a faulty brake, alignment off, chipped tires truck which was unsafe to drive. The tech went out and confirmed all of this. Corporate was supposed to send out a transfer team and took hours to do so, which delayed my move. On top of all this, they are holding me money and continuously keep fraudulently attempting to charge my card more like another $75 this morning. The dip shit at the counter said he would return money to my card and then tried charging me 3x while I was standing there. I was told by him that the deposit I paid was the actual price of the truck.
Joey the district manager of PENSKE doesn't seem to care about safety inspections, customer service, or accurate pricing. Since they can't make things right, I'm now suing to get my money back because I'm sick of greedy corporations. Home Depot and Penske will never get another penny of my hard earned money. DO NOT RENT A PENSKE TRUCK FROM THIS LOCATION. YOU'LL BE OVERCHARGED AND PUT IN A NON INSPECTED TRUCK DELAYING YOUR MOVE AND RISKING YOUR LIFE.

Don’t waste your time or money using Penske Truck Rental at 4680 Laredo Ave, Fort Myers. Very unprofessional, the “assistant manager” first told me he was the branch manager, then he refused to provide his name when I asked him to identify himself, and third he started laughing in my face when he said “you pay an extra charge, or you don’t take the truck”. I called Penske headquarters and the representative was trying to contact the district manager because he feels this was unacceptable from them, but he didn’t answer and they told me to leave the building because they wanted to close the office, and they don’t care what headquarter says, this is their branch and they do what they want. Don’t go there! It doesn’t matter what you booked online they don’t respect your reservation details.

We rented 2 26’ Penske trucks for our upcoming move from Las Vegas NV to Topeka KS. The rep who booked our move was great and made the process seamless, she provided us with all available discounts. We picked up The trucks and loaded them up. We started our Journey and immediately upon entering the highway to our dismay the trucks had a restricted mph of 69. We could not even do the speed limit. We were never told that the trucks had a restriction of speed which caused us to be not able to make the hotel rooms that we booked. Losing out on $500 in rooms and having to book different rooms. Very disappointing that the rep did not inform us about the mph restriction. We had rented trucks before and have not had that problem. I called customer care and they offered me $50 for the inconvenience. On a side note one of the trucks had a broken headlight. They offered me $150 for that.

I need to share something extremely disappointing that happened to me at the Penske Truck Rental location on 43rd St. in Phoenix, Arizona. Recently, I received a call from an unknown number claiming I owed Penske $495 for a past rental. I couldn’t verify the number, couldn’t call it back, and customer service told me to go into a Penske location to confirm whether the call was legitimate. So I went in to do exactly that.
✔️ I did NOT owe Penske anything
✔️ I was NOT on a do-not-rent list
✔️ There was no past-due balance of any kind
Instead of helping me understand who was calling me, checking for a possible security breach, or treating my concern seriously, Skyler chose to label me as the problem. He issued a BOLO (“be on the lookout”) alert about me through Penske’s district management messaging system — accusing me of possibly attempting to defraud the company by renting a truck and possibly not returning the truck. However, he drew that conclusion that was very concerning to myself simply because I asked if the call was legitimate. He even went as far as canceling my reservation and blocking me from renting, despite acknowledging that I owed nothing.
As a ** man, this experience left me feeling profiled, disrespected, and discriminated against. I walked in asking for help and clarity — instead, I was treated like a threat. No investigation. No security check. No customer support. Just discrimination and an attempt to deny me service. I’m sharing this because experiences like this happen far too often, and silence protects the wrong people. Penske needs to address this. #Discrimination #RacialProfiling #PenskeTruckRental #PhoenixArizona #CustomerRights #ConsumerProtection

This is in their web page. Damage Waiver (LDW). LDW covers you from financial responsibility if you experience any loss or damage to the truck or towing equipment except if the vehicle or equipment is used in any manner that violates the rental agreement terms. LDW does not cover your personal vehicle. Why is LDW recommended? Without Penske's Limited Damage Waiver, you will be liable for any damage to your rental truck regardless of who is at fault.
When I rented the truck, I paid for the insurance assuming that I am covered but that is just how this company makes money. Just think how many people renting these trucks get into an accident. I have been renting it for last 10 years I never had any scratch but this time I drove into a garage as per the clearance, however there was a pipe that damaged the back part of the truck on right side. There was no roof damage, the roller door was still working. When I returned the truck, I was told the roof is damaged but when I argued I was told that I was negligence. I provide all the footage of the garage and the pipe that was impeding.
I spoke an insurance lawyer he told me that the insurance I paid should cover the damage. I check the rental agreement of other truck rental companies they told me that an accident is when the damage happens not caused. I did not cause the accident. I followed all the proper precautions I was not aware that there is a pipe. My point is as follows:
1. I don’t think there is any insurance, this company is making millions of dollars scamming people.2. If there is insurance who is the insurer, if Penske is the insurer, then it is in their best interest not to pay the insurance and make extra money.
3. The insurance lawyer who checked the rental agreement said there is no disclosure about roof damage. He said if the manager is saying that I was told verbally then why there is a agreement, you know what he means.
4. The repair was done by their own company that means another way of making money.
5. The repair cost of the truck is 10 time more than what I would have paid a courier company to do my move.
I don’t recommend anyone to rent their truck and if you do rent don’t pay the insurance. Have your own insurance from another insurance company like AAA or BCAA.

We currently lease a reefer van, and from the day we picked it up, it has had a recurring battery issue that has never been resolved. As a 501(c)(3) serving the City of Troy, we rely on this van to safely transport food at proper temperatures for our community. Less than two years into the lease, the van has been in their shop numerous times—often for one to two weeks at a time—with minimal communication and no successful repair. We are now on our third battery. The reefer has been rewired. Yet no one seems to know the root cause, and the problem continues.
Each time it goes in for service, I am forced to beg for a replacement van—despite being told at the time of leasing that one would be provided whenever the vehicle needed service. This past week we picked up the van, only to have the battery die again within 16 hours. They jump-started it, and after significant pushback we finally received a rental van. Two days later, the rental key broke, and we were told a locksmith couldn’t arrive until Tuesday. That is simply unacceptable. At this point, I cannot recommend this company in any capacity. We are a nonprofit whose funds should be going toward feeding people who are hungry—not toward hiring an attorney to resolve ongoing, preventable issues with a leased vehicle that was faulty from day one.

Updated on 11/15/2025: I am currently at Fyda Freightliner Columbus, Inc. The vehicle has been there for repair since November 11, 2025, addressing issues such as two check engine lights, a misaligned steering wheel, an ABS warning light, a gear indicator on the dashboard, and a passenger door lock that cannot be operated with the key.
After numerous delays, communication challenges, emails, phone calls, and promises, I was informed by Storm from Penske on November 14, 2025, that Cody from Fyda Freightliner Columbus, Inc. had completed the repairs. I arrived to pick up the vehicle on November 15, 2025, at 6:00am, signed the release paperwork, and was assisted by a staff member who drove the vehicle to the parking lot for me to retrieve.
The engine was running when I entered the vehicle; however, upon inspection of the dashboard, I observed a persistently illuminated amber check engine light. I returned inside to inform the staff member who had provided the documents, and she stated she would return the truck for re-diagnosis. It is important to note that Penske had already declined to repair the passenger door lock and the misaligned steering wheel. This experience has caused significant psychological and physical distress. I am eager to return home to my family as soon as possible.
Original Review: Before we bought our 26-foot Freightliner box truck from Penske of Reading, PA, we were told that a level 2 service would be performed by Penske within three weeks before pickup. A month later, I received several emails stating that the truck was ready. We made the final payment and scheduled a pickup date before flying to Ohio to pick up this truck. Long story short, I started the truck and heard a lot of strange noises coming from the engine. When I asked the manager, he said, ‘Don’t worry, it will go away. The truck has been sitting for two months.’ So, we drove the truck 14 minutes from the Penske pickup shop.
While driving the Freightliner M2, the gear indicator light illuminated on the dashboard. Soon after, all dashboard lights flashed, and the lights turned off and back on intermittently. I was on Highway 256 Westbound, Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Penske is now figuring out how to get it repaired, and I am hundreds of miles away from home. Plus, there are other things going on with the truck. I will keep you posted. If everything goes well, I look forward to increasing the stars!

Reserved at Penske truck for an upcoming move. I was given unlimited mileage and everything looked fine. Got a call the day of saying that the truck was not available at the location. It was available just a few miles out. I asked specifically was all the terms the same. I was told yes. I just had to go a few miles out. Showed up at the location to pick up the truck and am now about an hour late. I am then told they don't have that truck for the agreement that I have so I had unlimited miles and they told me I had 75 miles. Because the miles were unlimited I never checked to see how many miles I needed. I was told they need the truck for FedEx for holiday packages anyway. Had to cancel my reservation and not get the truck due to the very treacherous false advertisement and false agreement made.

If I could give them zero stars I would. We are business owners and were told that we had reserved trucks for our peak season. We just came to find out that we were just put on a waiting list for cancellations and that they actually quit taking regular reservations at the end of August. We were NEVER told any of this and spoke to them several times. We talked to other business owners and apparently, they do this all the time. We will never recommend their services and will never even try to do business with them ever again. They were deceiving and unprofessional.

Originally I gave Penske 3 stars. I jumped the gun. I was driving not yet to my destination. I got a message saying oil was low and I needed to add oil. Then I looked at the gage and it was just 2 marks over 0. I pulled over and called Penske roadside assistants and got a tow truck out to where I was at. Anthony checked the dip stick and no oil was registering. When I picked it up I was told that they did an oil change. So why was it dry? I better get money back because I went through so much stress over this. And I shouldn't be penalized because I couldn't fill the tank up. I'm still stressing over this!

Worst truck rental experience of my life. Sent me to 3 locations all 30 minutes apart from each other because y’all couldn’t locate a truck I reserved nearly 2 weeks in advance. I had ~40 friends waiting to help me load a moving truck, but half had to leave because I was over an hour late and we had to load it in the dark, while it was raining. Penske’s errors kept me from getting to say one last goodbye to all the friends and family I had made before moving out of state. The customer service reps were sweet and tried to help as much as possible, but their help was unfortunately shadowed by the rest of the experience. The AC also didn’t work for the entire first half of a 22+ hour roadtrip spanning 3 days. The radio and clock in the cab also didn’t work half of the time. The truck ran well, but I highly regret using Penske's service and would not recommend at all.

I rented a 12-foot truck in Atlanta, Ga., and returned it in Knoxville, Tenn. It was my first time renting/driving a truck. I found customer service very helpful, as I called several times to ensure I would get a 12 vs. 16-foot. Pickup went smoothly. The truck was nice, easy to drive, roomy cab. Mirrors were great, and there is a small back-up camera in the rear-view mirror. I liked the translucent roof since I was loading it at night as well. The tie-down rails in the back were useful. Wooden floors made it easy to slide boxes to back. Door was easy to open and close. Return was a breeze. Overall, a good experience. Initially it looked like Penske might be more expensive than some competitors, but after adding in other costs and applying discount, they were actually cheaper. I would use them again.

Abstract: This review documents a cross-country rental experience with Penske Truck Leasing, specifically a 26-foot box van rented from the Home Depot location on Liberia Avenue in Manassas, VA, and driven to Poulsbo, WA. The journey, spanning over 3,000 miles, revealed systemic failures in vehicle maintenance, customer service coordination, and operational safety. The findings suggest a troubling disregard for basic mechanical integrity and customer welfare, raising serious questions about Penske’s fleet management practices.
Upon arrival at the rental site, the vehicle presented immediate visual red flags: dents on all four corners, two substantial cracks in the windshield, and an overall appearance of neglect. When questioned about roadworthiness, the rental agent assured that the truck had been “checked out” and was “good to go.” This statement, as later events would prove, was dangerously inaccurate. The DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) tank was only half full, and the fuel gauge hovered between three-quarters and full—minor but telling signs of a lack of pre-rental inspection rigor. These oversights foreshadowed deeper mechanical issues that would emerge en route.
2. Mechanical Deficiencies and Safety HazardsFrom the outset, the truck exhibited erratic behavior:
Lane Departure Warning System: Activated continuously despite proper lane alignment, indicating sensor miscalibration or system failure.
Cruise Control: Non-functional, adding fatigue and distraction to a long-haul journey.
Steering: Initially tight in spots, later developing severe resistance at top dead center and every quarter turn—symptoms consistent with a failing steering box.
The vehicle’s powertrain was equally inadequate. Acceleration to 60 MPH took nearly a minute, and the truck could only reach its governed top speed of 70 MPH on downhill grades. This underperformance posed a hazard on highways, especially during merging and overtaking maneuvers.
3. Catastrophic Steering Failure and Emergency Response. In Tennessee, the steering system deteriorated to a dangerous level. After 100 miles of battling the wheel, a call to Penske resulted in dispatching a technician who confirmed the failure. A replacement truck—already with 200,000 miles—was delivered via semi tow truck.
While Penske promised a 3–3.5 hour wait for the replacement and moving crew, the tow driver arrived early (2.5 hours), but the helpers were delayed by over 4 hours and ultimately unnecessary. The tow driver, acting beyond his duties, assisted with cross-loading—a commendable act of professionalism in stark contrast to Penske’s systemic failures.
During the tow preparation, a chilling discovery was made: two of the four universal joint cap bolts on the drive shaft were cross-threaded and not fully seated. This defect could have led to catastrophic drive shaft ejection at speed, endangering lives. The original assurance of roadworthiness was not just incorrect—it was potentially criminally negligent.
4. Replacement Vehicle: Marginally Better, Still Flawed. The second truck, while not actively dangerous, was far from ideal:
Suspension Seat: Unlubricated, producing loud creaks and pops throughout the remainder of the journey.Passenger Window: Would not stay closed.
Side Mirrors: Repositioned themselves at speeds over 45 MPH, rendering them useless and requiring constant manual adjustment.
These issues, though less severe, reflect a continued pattern of poor maintenance and disregard for driver comfort and safety.
5. Delivery and Administrative Breakdown. Upon arrival in Poulsbo, WA, the receiving agent had no record of the rental. The truck was ultimately accepted with a signature on a blank sheet of paper—an astonishing lapse in recordkeeping and accountability.
6. Conclusion. This rental experience was not merely inconvenient—it was hazardous. Penske’s failure to maintain basic mechanical standards, coupled with poor logistical coordination and administrative oversight, placed the driver and others at serious risk. The discovery of improperly installed drive shaft components alone warrants investigation.
Penske’s reputation as a reliable provider of commercial vehicles is undermined by this experience. Barring injury or fatality, this case represents a near-worst-case scenario in rental logistics. I will not be using Penske again, and I strongly advise others to scrutinize their rental vehicles thoroughly—or seek alternative providers. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Disputed it.
Since my stuff was ruined and they kept telling me I had been in an accident - omg - So then they take off the $106.021 and stick a "bundle" on my bill and make it $267..00 - So they can't charge for the gas so they make up charges - Then when Cap one requests documents they send the doctored one.
