We walked through the estimate over the phone. They provided an estimate to me and then offered a deduction if I signed within a certain amount of time. So that leveraged me to make a decision pretty quickly. But I wish I knew early on that Great American is just a broker and they are going to hire some other entity as a moving company that worked contractually for them. That contract with them is not completely evident. It is possible that that contract was buried in a pile of documents, and I could have seen the contract between them and their broker. But I had an estimate in the contract with Great American, and there was definitely a little bit of confusion about what should have been included and not been included when the movers arrived.

Even the moving company said, “Well, you should have just called us direct.” That was frustrating to not realize there was a contract in the background that they were going to try to leverage me with. That isn't my contract, and it is their contract. There was no interaction there to try to resolve that on my behalf or the movers’ behalf. At that point, I didn't have another option. It was the day I had to move out, so I was gonna get it moved, and it didn't matter. So I had to pay.

Part of the contract that I had with Great American was an agreed upon delivery date. I didn't care when they came and picked it up. What mattered was the day they delivered. They told me that this move could take as long as two weeks. I said, “Okay. Great. I just want it to show up on this day. So you tell me what day you show up to make it happen that day.” The last call I had with Great American was with their customer service team and they went through everything again. I had the opportunity to upload pictures of everything and then we went through that list again. Then we scheduled the pickup and delivery. So in my mind, when we scheduled to pick up the delivery, that's the day it’s picked up, and that's the day it's delivered. Also, the price went up and that was fine. It was clear.

When the moving company came, they said, “Oh, no, no. That's expedited delivery. We're not in contract for that.” So that was part of the confusion and the mess. It was very, very stressful. But ultimately, it ended up working out. Great American's customer service was pretty decent, but the handoff to the contractors they used was non-existent. They handed it off and signed the contract with somebody else. Then my experience and communication were then to a subcontractor who I didn't have a relationship with except through Great America, who was no longer in the picture.

Great American Moving System was the one that contacted me first. And I liked what they did. I had a great experience with them. We did the packing ourselves. But when they got there, they said, “We probably need to put some tape on this.” So, they made sure that everything was taped up well, and that everything would move properly. When the driver called, first, we had set a date. And they said, “You have to have an alternate date.” So, we put in one. Through email and text, we had set a firm time and date for the alternate date. And that would be in the morning. On the date, the driver called me 5:00 in the afternoon and said that he would be there 7:30.

I said, “Oh, I don't think that's really going to work for me.” He said, “That's all that's going to work for me. So if I'm going to pick it up, it's going to be there at 7:30 this evening or not at all.” That wasn't cool.” So, I said, “Okay. I need this stuff picked up. So, that's fine.” Picking it up at 7:30 that evening worked out better for me. It was not nice of the guy. But on the other hand, God's hand was in it and it worked better.

I was told that I could pick my delivery date. So, it was not supposed to be before this specific date. And they had 10 days to deliver after that, which was cool with me. Two weeks before that date, my driver called and said, “Is it okay if I come on Sunday?” But that was two weeks before I expected it. He said, “If that isn't going to work at all for you, I'll make sure it works for me some other way.”

I had just moved my house. And I just got steps that day before he called. I said, “You know what? No, I've got the steps in. We’ll be fine. You can just bring it.” That wasn't his fault. It was packed in the middle of the truck he picked up. And he was very willing to accommodate me if I couldn't handle that. He was wonderful. He got here and it was raining cats and dogs. They brought it all up to the house. They did it as dryly as possible when it poured down rain. They put bags on their feet, and put it in the room where I needed it. They were awesome. They had a horrible time doing it. But they did a good job. I would go that route again.

The person from Great American Moving System that I worked with was honest with the information. He gave a clear estimate of my moving items in terms of the cubic feet. The crew that came in identified the number of cubic feet a little more than what was estimated. I asked them for a roundup of the price, so I was initially asked to pay 2,500. I was able to negotiate to them for 2,600. There was a half hour discussion with them regarding that, but after that, it was all seamless. They did a good job of packing all my items. Two delivery guys came and they were able to do everything. I'm happy with that work as well. The outer box that contained the fragile items was broken so I was worried. But the items were okay.

Overall, I’m not satisfied. Half of my bins, two nightstands and three folding chairs. Those who packed this up in Kentucky were a little fishy because it was a father-and-son operation, and the father kept yelling at his son to do things while he was out on his phone. So, I'm not impressed with the packers. The crew brought an 18-wheeler. The driver would be able to get in at the driveway cover, but he proclaimed that he couldn't. The other direction he could have went is he could have back in. But he declined to do that, so I had to rent a U-Haul so they could pack that up. And when I got to my destination at the storage locker, I had to hire movers because I couldn't move the stuff myself. I feel I would be entitled to a reimbursement for the U-Haul and in items that are missing. I wouldn't recommend Great American Moving System to move.
