Stay away from this insurance. I am a policy holder and after submitting proof of your having a medical condition and providing documentation and still you get denied benefits. And they pay a whole month in the amount of $117.10 from June 21, 2024 to July 22, 2024 instead of paying $1394.00 so stay away from this company.

Unum is the worst company to deal with. They don’t know how to read paperwork submitted by the hospital. They take weeks to get payments out (off from work 5 weeks before I got a check and it is shorted a whole week because they have my disability date wrong). Completely incompetent company, employers should think twice before using them to manage FMLA and disability needs.

Called my doctor and he said I could not work and I am not better. I hired an attorney. They will get my money, the doctors have gotten money because I went to 3 different providers and had an MRI to validate my numerous chronic conditions. UNUM wants to get rid of me. They have tried to give me a lump sum twice. I would guess they know I’ll never get better. Bad faith. Devastating. I had to move, and now, I am so worried when I go out, because they sent a PI to watch me - I was dinged for walking my dogs. They are used for balance. Bad faith. The best therapy is a walk. UNUM approved my PTSD Disability claim and after the 180 waiting period they paid and found me totally disabled with a “mental illness” even though studies show PTSD is brain damage. I proved medical evidence and thought I was done and was assigned a new very snippy claim specialist who sent more forms and want yet more information even through I provided enough evidence little over a month ago. Every time I hear from them I lose any progress and go back the trauma that caused my disability and I spiral. They don’t care. A very stern and cold automatron who Into used to the pain from the humiliated and disabled, brushes me off like a fly. The Insurance regulators need to do better. Disability insurance companies are the very bottom of the barrel and I see why people commit suicide, although I am not planning to, I understand. Jesus weeps.

I enrolled in UNUM voluntary insurance and the coverage information included eye injuries and surgery. On 11/30/2023 I had surgery for a detached retina and a Giant Retinal Tear. The doctors injected silicone oil into my eye for recovery purposes. On 2/8/2024, I had a second surgery to remove the oil. I submitted a claim for an accident due to the detachment, however, I could not say exactly how my retina became detached and torn. It usually involves head trauma, but again, I could not pin point the exact incident because detachments/tears can be slow to evolve.

I told my doctor this and I was honest on my claim. It was denied because UNUM said that a detached retina is an illness, not an accident. I filed a different claim for my retina surgeries with the illness form and that claim was denied, stating retinal detachment is not an illness. Again, my coverage includes eye injuries ($300) and surgeries ($1000). It seems UNUM is finding creative ways to not provide coverage that I have been paying for the past year.

UNUM came to my company's open enrollment, and put on a great show. The rep convinced so many of us to allow payroll deduction for the STD and/or LTD policies through UNUM. I was injured about 8 months afterward. Our HR department got the ball rolling for me to receive STD. It was nothing more than a well-rehearsed game I played with the STD claims rep. I had MRIs that showed the injury/disability. For 10 weeks, the claims rep played a game with me all the way up until the day I got a medical release to return to work. On that day, she told me I was being denied. I learned there were others in my company who had the same experience. Our company switched to Mutual of Omaha for the STD/LTD during the next open enrollment. UNUM has horrible reviews.

I'll most likely be calling the insurance commissioner over Unum. One star is too high a rating for this worthless company. They currently owe me $8,000 for a short-term disability claim. I've called them numerous times. It takes several minutes to get through all the prompts to finally get someone on the phone which I'm sure his by design. No one's ever able to actually help and they refuse to let you talk to a manager/supervisor. This past week, one of the representatives knew I obviously was not happy and would not hang up the phone for me to take the automated survey. I explained to her that I knew what she was doing and she tried to tell me I had to hang up first for me to be able to take the survey. WRONG.

Like others if I could give negative rating I would. These people treat you horribly when you ask them questions. They never actually answer the questions that are asked especially when it comes to the fact that it seems they have lost my medical records. Then they gaslight you to make you think you are absolutely crazy. They blame you the customer for them not having everything even when you have proof that the information requested has been sent. They also tell you to upload records on their app, however some records wouldn’t upload cause they were too big to upload. I’ve had claims specialists actually tell me they could be working on claims but instead they are having to deal with my phone calls when they already answered my questions, in which they never answered my question.

For all I know some stranger down the street could be reading my medical records. They claim they don’t have my records however other people confirmed my records were there previously. The so called “director” who called me back when I made a complaint wasn’t any better. I had the whole conversation on speaker and my husband finally heard how they spoke to me. He was appalled by how even the “director” spoke to me. They tell you all the time they need your records and it’s your responsibility to get them there. However when you tell them that you have sent them they argue with you that they aren’t there. They even blame the customer for not giving updates on doctors who are treating you when you prove that you have called but THEIR staff won’t take the information and just keep referring you to a previous letter. Every time you try to call to get information and confirm you’re doing things right you get different information.

If you are able to have another disability insurance I would. This has been the worst experience I’ve ever encountered. I’ve even asked them if it’s a requirement to be hired to treat customers like this. It’s awful. Only reason why I had to deal with them is because this is who my employer uses. I was also told by my employer that short term automatically goes to long term. Well that is NOT the case. I’m waiting to see if they decide to approve my long term.

The worst company for short and long term disability company. They never call you back when customer service tells you that they will call you back within that day by 5 pm. Usually it takes five days to get an return phone call. Also, when they need an additional information, they don't really tell you what you need until after the 5 days they have to review the claim and then they have additional 5 days. Never did get an regular check every 2 weeks. It took me to 5 weeks to get my first check. They always came back they didn't get information from my doctors. They did because my doctor emailed me what they faxed. Not a great company for disability.

I wish I could give this company a negative zero (-0) rating! I signed up for their short- and long-term disability plans through my employer (Tidewater Offshore Marine), and it's been nothing but issues, none of which I experienced with my former employers' plans. I was put on leave status from my job due to an injury, which later required surgery. My h.r. rep told me to file my paperwork with Unum for my short-term disability, and I wasn't paid until a week after I had my surgery (a span of almost 3 1/2 months!).

They sent me a lump sum & pay was coming in but was abruptly stopped after 2/12 months, and I was told that I have to fill out more paperwork for my long-term claim! Yes, folks...short term doesn't roll over into long-term like most other insurances do, so it was as if I was starting from scratch, despite the fact that the doctor who performed my surgery & the doctors overseeing my physical therapy already sent them paperwork on my status. Usually, a doctor's word is bond in disability cases; Once the doctor says "Yea" that's all it takes. Not with Unum. They have to "review" both my paperwork & what the doctors have already stated.

My condition was good enough to get short-term disability but not for long term?? Oh, it gets better, their review process takes upwards of 4 to 6 weeks for approval (if they approve it), so I'm sitting & rehabbing from surgery with no money coming in. In fact, I've had to take out a loan against my 401(k) to keep my account from drying up! I have voiced my displeasure with Unum's customer service department to no avail. Even more galling is that the claims & records supervisor at the clinic where my surgery was done even said that THEY can't stand dealing with Unum! She even told me, "Baby, you are not the first person clowning about Unum & probably won't be the last. I've had to get on them for their rude treatment of my staff." Folks, if that doesn't speak volumes, what does?!!

If you are a prospective client (including employer) and you're looking at Unum for your disability services, do yourself (and employees, if applicable) a huge favor: DON'T! If you're a current customer like myself, drop them like they're hot rocks! Once my ordeal is over, I'm going to Aflac. If I decide to stay with my current employer, I'm telling them to discontinue my enrollment with Unum & I'll get Aflac or someone else that's better. I've heard far more positive about Aflac (and my former disability folks, Aetna) than Unum will ever have! The records & claims supervisor I mentioned earlier said that unless Unum changes their ways, they're gonna lose customers to the point where they may have to file bankruptcy or go out of business. As a current/soon-to-be-ex customer, I can't wait for that day to come, because I don't want anyone else to go through the bull---- I've had to deal with!

I first started having issues with FMLA intermittent leave when I started a new claim for intermittent leave. I had already been off a few weeks for FMLA prior to that. My doctor submitted all paperwork, and they requested information 3 more times. The letter stating what was needed were obviously already answered i.e. doctor's signature, time needed, fax number, etc. After 2 months of trying to get it approved and finally getting connected to a claim specialist only because I used HR, they stated I didn't need a new claim (B) because I had already been off earlier in the year for the same condition. Claim (A) was closed, and paperwork was shown as linked to claim (B) and days approved. Upon looking at the Unum website, I noticed all communications and records regarding claim (A) were no longer accessible to me, but I had printed some of the communication.

A month and a half later I was contacted by my manager stating he was instructed to write me up for 2 days. The 2 days were ones I had submitted intermittent hours for through their app. HR once again got involved, Unum stated they did not show absences reported, I sent screenshots proving I had submitted them. A claim specialist inputted the hours manually, but stated I needed to get intermittent FMLA paperwork filled out by my Dr. This was less than 2 months from when paperwork was originally requested and finally stated as sufficient. Repeat calls were not returned with HR involved including being directed to use numbers that were out of service by the claim specialist by email. I explained that the paperwork was already there and even showed on the app. They requested it again stating they didn't have anything.

After asking HR and a specialist together on a video call why I had to supply the same document again in less than 3 months when my condition had not changed, HR sent a copy of the original intermittent FMLA form. It was again approved as it was and the hours covered. They did not address any concerns with inconsistencies or issues with the app. Now another month later, not being able to rely on the app, I had to wait until I had access to a work computer when I returned a week later.

Unum has now denied those days they are stating as insufficient notice. HR was able to find paperwork that stated must report within 2 days for intermittent not the normal 7, but requested they reconsider due to my doubts with the reliability of the app. They responded that they would not approve them, they were not aware of any issues with the app, and they show where I had accessed the account 3 times when the absences was reported. Obviously, I accessed the account when I reported: on the work computer when I returned. I am still dealing with that portion now.

My husband needed to go on disability and his company was in middle of changing policies with Unum. We had to wait 2 months before ever receiving a determination of whether he would be under the "old" or "new" policy. He ended up having to be considered on the "old policy" and therefore we were denied the better "new" policy. If we had received a more timely response, we could have made different choices regarding his disability and he could have met the requirements of the "new" policy. But because it took them 2 months to answer, it was too late at that point. His company's Human Resources could not get an answer either.

It was also over 2 months before any payment was received at all for his short term disability. We had questions before he needed to go back to the Dr for re-evaluation. Of course, those questions weren't answered either until after the Dr's visit and it was too late. No email address was available just an 800 number where you would leave a message. It is a lot of stress when someone has a medical situation needing disability and then have the added stress of trying to get a response from an insurance company and a financial burden as well. Bottom Line: DO NOT Recommend UNUM for Short Term Disability Insurance.

These people deny others who are extremely sick or injured and in need of approval for their disability claims, but all Unum does is cause more problems for the person in need. They will lie to you about not receiving Medical Certification Forms, and their decisions on denial go completely against medical science. Everything you need to know about this company can be found online if you do the deep digging.

They have been found guilty of fraud and wrongfully denying claims multiple times, and law offices around the country have separate pages on their websites for how to deal with Unum. My guess is that companies are sold on Unum based on their annual revenue and the fact that they've been around since before the Civil War. When you bring in $10 billion annually, maybe start paying some of that out to people who really need it. Your reviews wouldn't look this bad. More investigations need to be opened.

I have only had this company for a few years. The bank I was working at had Unum as their disability provider. I was in a horrific motorcycle accident where I was in a coma for 2 weeks, in the hospital for 2 months and am still trying to get better. I will never be the same. Unum paid the benefit while I had to learn how to walk again. In the meantime my bank got Guardian and dropped Unum. (Now I know why) Guardian did all the paperwork for me to get on social security disability. Wonderful company who cares about their clients. I got on disability and Unum immediately sent out a letter that they wanted to be paid back. I paid them back the money I was paid by ss. So now they pay me less than $600 a month and have ruthlessly been trying to collect information from my doctors looking for one little reason not to pay me. They have done this to me several times.

No one wants to be on disability or on social security. Especially not me. I have a lot of pride and I'm a hard worker and I'd never asked to be. In this position. companies pay the insurance so that their employees will have peace of mind. God forbid anything like this happens to them. The last thing anyone needs is to be harassed by a company looking for some reason that they don't have to pay you when you're already going through so much mentally physically emotionally. This company Unum has absolutely no Decency or concern whatsoever for their clients. All they care about is that they don't want to pay you what the benefit was. Recently they sent me this fitness for duty form.

Where I filled it out my doctor filled it out and sent it back. As soon as they got that, they wanted my medical records from my doctor and made me sign a release for them again. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to be in a position that I am in having a paralyzed but rods in my back. And in my ribs and have this company harass me the way they are. If there is anyone out there that reads this that can help me do something about this. I would so appreciate it. The new company that my bank got helped me with social security. But they couldn't help pay the benefit of course, because I had already been. Let go of from my job because my injuries were so bad. If you're a company, don't do this to your employees, please I beg you do not get Unum for them. Guardian was wonderful looking to them.

This is the most worthless insurance one could have! They send me numerous emails wanting me to provide them with information from physical therapy and from my orthopedic surgeon. My weekly benefit is $39.00 and I’ve had it with their bothersome emails. Maria told me that they get the updates and I don’t need to. I told her to stop sending me their stupid emails because we are duplicating requests. PTs and Physicians have patients to take of and don’t have time to respond to multiple requests for the same information.

I live in CA and draw $2,000.00 a month for my short term disability related to my shoulder surgery. I don’t mind being bothered with weekly emails for $2,000.00 but not for $39.00. I also told her I’m not electing for short term disability insurance during our open enrollment for 2024. Unum representatives need to do their job and STOP bothering those of us trying to recover from surgery. Also, I gave them my surgeon's and PT’s contact information when I started my claim so why are they bothering me? I got so irritated with Maria who wouldn’t listen to me that I finally had to just hang up on her.

Horrible. My company uses them for my maternity leave and all was okay until 7wks in. My paycheck suddenly didn't deposit in my account the day it should have which resulted in bills pulling and funds not available so it cost me $105 in overdraft fees. The money got deposited a few days later. I am still out the overdraft fees which is infuriating but I'm trying to enjoy time with my baby so I let it go. Well then they are handling my hospital pay claim for me being admitted. I signed up for direct deposit the moment the claim was approved but they told me too late we already wrote you a check. I waited 6 days for it to arrive in the mail. I deposited it in my account and my bank now says the funds are not available so they pulled it back out of my account. Part of the money has already been spent so MORE overdraft fees will hit my account.

I called Unum explaining my bank said the check is not registered to their PPM account making it impossible to cash. They said it has been cashed and they are sending me a certified letter in the mail. I am supposed to be enjoying time with my baby before returning to work. Instead my checking account is going into the negatives for a second time and I cannot get anywhere with unum to get help. Reading their other reviews of so many people not getting paid while at their lowest on disability makes me sad. At least I could enjoy 7wks with my baby before this mess started. Now I am crying while I hold him because I will have negative money in my account and owe more overdraft fees come tomorrow morning.

Just what a sick person wants to do. Same old requests that have been filled remain on the screen as needed. Alerts for some things and not others. You learn that they need something when your company sends you threatening emails. My experience has been a negative 10 on a 1-10 scale. Insult to injury.

The worst disability company I have ever dealt with. I highly recommend Aflac just from past experiences. Unum I get they need to make sure all medical information is correct but the system they have is complicated. I had sent my doctor's notes and information a month before my surgery, Unum told me after I had my surgery my doctor would need to resubmit the forms which made me have to wait again for my claims to be approved. Updated my direct deposit information, they don't inform you when it's complete, no email notification, no app notification. Just nothing! I did another deposit information form not remembering which bank I used and I called a few days later to see if either one was accepted and the lady told me my previous one been accepted but since I did a new one it was pending so they kicked out the first one, so my paper check was sent.

The system communication could be better, people are trying to recover and are sick, it's sad when you can't fully recover because you have to contact a company who seem to not really care about the customer, you have a system that needs some updates. Knowing that deposit information is pending, rejected, or approved would be nice for future references especially for customers in worse situations, it would make the process a bit easier and would eliminate some call traffic. Just overall highly wouldn't recommend and I think I'll just pay that extra money outta pocket for Aflac, seem like my job went with the cheapest disability company solution. My wife took a disability policy out thru her employer from Unum 12 years ago. Premiums always deducted from her paycheck - so there was never a missed payment. Last year, my wife became incapacitated from several unexpected surgeries. Well, this is when the games begin… We submitted every single document required, confirmed it with the representative from Unum and then waited. Weeks. Weeks turned into months - then - we receive a check. $7.00. Yes, SEVEN DOLLARS a week. What they do is essentially lie about the policy when you take it out, saying “they’ll pay you up to $1,000.00 a week while you’re incapacitated.” Lie.

After getting an attorney involved, we receive a phone call from Unum stating we had been underpaid. Unum now sends a check for $6500.00 to us, of which they’re now demanding to be returned because they’re saying “it was an overpayment.” DO YOU SEE A PATTERN YET? It gets better… My wife while out on temporary disability, gets a phone call from a very smooth talker from Unum which will be named later in court - and he says, “Madam, we are going to pay you 40% of your gross salary until aged 65, then our ASSOCIATE COMPANY BROWN AND BROWN will help transfer you to Social Security Disability, but that won’t happen until ages 65.” Ok, great - well - we never recd the 40%, that is what we were told - we IMMEDIATELY received calls from Brown and Brown, to get my wife on SS Disability so Unum won’t have to pay a dime.

Not only will Unum not pay, they’re still demanding a refund from when my wife was on TEMPORARY disability. This company is a shell game. They make unkept promises. DO NOT take out a Policy with Unum, go with someone different. Or better yet, fund it yourself in case of an emergency. This company will use EVERY excuse and will clearly pass you off to your State or Federal programs. You’ve been warned. Unum will have to explain themselves in court, along to the Federal Insurance Office of The United States Treasury Department.

If you call them, don't make the mistake of telling any of the "customer service" (what a joke) representatives they are wrong about something because when you do, they will first try to talk over you. When you refuse to allow them to do that, they will practice call avoidance and put you on mute so that you have no way to fill the satisfaction survey or request an escalation. Today I immediately called back to try to get a supervisor, only to never have one pick up. Tried to call again.... Got the after hours message.

    Besides their "customer service" issues:

    - I have a legitimate, LIFELONG issue that will never go away. UNUM apparently refuses to allow my intermittent leave any longer than 6 months, and then further REFUSES TO ADVISE THAT RECERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED. They then lied about it to say that 6 months was the maximum time anyone could have....
    - They will always, ALWAYS refuse documents and try to find some sort of "Gotcha!" moment, claiming there is information they are "missing".
    - They can't keep ANYTHING straight. My paperwork has been filled out the exact same way two times now, and somehow they come to DIFFERENT conclusions about each.

    - No matter how many times I tell them they will never receive permission to contact my doctor and have no legal right to do so, they continually insist and send my forms to fill out for it.

I'm to the point of reaching out to report their nonsense.

Months later we noticed that they didn't take from our bank account so the phone calls started. Hung up on, all members of the office are in a meeting all day, etc. Over a week later I get someone to help. Nobody can find my policy based on name, SS#, DOB, or company. I dug through paperwork, got the policy number, call back, nobody can find it based on that. They go to transfer you, hang up. Call back, get the number they trying to transfer to in case, they try to transfer, hung up. Call that new number, on hold for over 30m, even try on my wife's phone number, seemingly get better results, hung up on again!

Finally get an answer on the my phone, get attitude from the start, no answers as to why nobody can find my account, tell her to stop auto debit, more attitude, won't even answer my questions, just dead silence. Find out you can't access your account online or login to see payments or even view your account with them. All you can do is call and harass them! We find out how to terminate with them, I end the call. I called my bank and stopped future payments, they tell me that the company might try to use a different name to get around the block. Lovely. I am a teacher in Texas, and Advanced Financial Group in Lufkin, TX picked this insurance company. I might be getting dental through a private company if I can when the benefits become available again. I tried to get their fax number for the requested documentation, and they refused. I just recently filed a claim for my husband whom at age 69 has early onset Alzheimer's and needs 7/10 help with his daily needs and is now in memory care. My experience with Unum has been excellent. My mom purchased a long term care policy thru her employer 20 years ago. I have the original policy as well as all her payments and correspondence. In September of 2020 she was placed into a Memory Care facility due to dementia. I started the claim process in September and it is February 13, 2021 and Unum has still not honored the contract. I submitted all paperwork plus my DPA. They lost my DPA twice, needed Dr’s orders plus clinical notes twice. Set up Direct Deposit - still not getting correct payments. Her policy is to pay $1000 for 24 months. First payment in January was $560. When asked why, the Benefit Specialist said they didn’t know what licensing her Memory Care had so they were paying a lower rate. After 4 months they didn’t think about that?

About a week later, I received a call stating the full rate was approved. I asked what is the full rate and he reluctantly said $1000. I asked to confirm the length of time and he said, “I don’t have that information “. He calls back a week later and says yes, 24 months. I just got her check for January - it’s for $620. UNUM is a scam. The longer they avoid paying, the greater likelihood she will die and they can keep her benefit. I have never dealt with a more corrupt company. At first I just thought they were incompetent, but I have realized it is a time delay process for them. My mom would have been better off putting her money into a minimum yield investment vehicle. I have spent unknown hours dealing with the company and it is still not honoring its contract! Shame UNUM. You should not be in the marketplace. My calculations have shown that I paid them over a ten year span tens of thousands in premiums and now they are asking that I pay them 10% or four years of what they paid since going out on long term. After dealing with countless record requests, requests going to the wrong doctor MANY times, VERY late payments such as 8-12 weeks late, sending literally HUNDREDS of pages of records just for them to “need more information”, flooding my doctors office with the physicians statement form DOZENS of times for the same surgery saying they needed more information. Unum is directly responsible for destroying me financially, EVERY payment I received was so late that it set me behind on my bills so bad I’m still trying to get caught back up, months later. Their delays have destroyed my credit scores, my car got repossessed twice because of Unum's late checks. Luckily my bank understood the situation after I told them about my surgeries and dealing with Unum.

I burned all of my savings just to try to keep from losing my house while I waited for a check from them. All the while dealing with customer service reps making “notes” about the urgency of the situation, which they were causing in the first place, and them saying, “Oh I’m sorry”. I would rather go through both back surgeries over again, without anesthesia, than deal with Unum again. Stay very far away from this company, they will bury you in record request, tell you they don’t have enough information, and force you to wait for months to get a payment. You’d be better of begging for change on the corner.

It is now 12/24 and my last payment was for pay period ending 12/2 even though my claim status is approved thru 12/15. Of the four payments I have received two have been incorrect and needed supplemental payments. Each time requiring me to spend time explaining the error to the claims rep. In frustration I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told I could not.

This is the poorest service I have ever received. The kicker is that there is no question about the claim. I had major surgery that required a two week hospital stay. I started paying for long term care insurance in 2007 thru my employer. Back then I think it was about $100 per month which covered me and my wife. Well about 6 years ago we got a price increase which amounted to doubling the monthly premium to $200 per month. When questioned they said this was a new insurance market for them and they were starting to realize higher costs now that some folks were using the benefits they paid for much like the current letter with excuses why the increase. Don’t they have actuarial people that know what they are doing? Of course cost will go up as the boomers start needing long term care.

Today 11/01/2020 I got another price increase notice which is another 52% increase to $ 400 per month. I am retired so these increase affect my monthly finances. They stated that because I had the inflation coverage option that is why I was getting the increase because their costs out of pocket are increasing because more people are now using what they paid for. With actuarial numbers they should have expected this kind of activity. This appears to me to be a bait (low ball starting price) and switch (get you hooked like a drug user and invested) so it becomes a more difficult decision to end it. I have over $30,000 invested in this program so it becomes more difficult to walk away from. Had I invested these monthly premiums in the stock market I would have around $100k so that may be a better option for all that are reading this and considering long term care insurance.

So at this rate I guess I can expect and increase (compounding) every three to five years of about 50 %? I see this as get “them hooked early with low rates,” keep increasing the rates until the insured gives up and forfeits all the money they have paid in or forfeit the inflation portion of the policy to not get the increase. Unfortunately my monthly payment without inflation clause would be $4000 to a nursing home which in today’s world averages about $7500 per month so the balance would eat up my hard earned savings over time should I last for a long time in a nursing home. That money needs to go to my kids not the nursing home which is why I bought the policy in the first place.

This company is very disreputable in my opinion. They should be investigated by the insurance bureau of New Jersey for these kinds of increases. They also should hire some professional actuaries so the projections would be more timely and realistic and rates would be more real world...but then they would be so high no one could afford them so this company would not be able to sell anything. See where I am going. I will call them tomorrow to voice my displeasure and find out what my options are. It is no fun being 74 years old. The way we are treated is a crime. Money is truly the root of all evil!!!

I have now been informed that UNUM have refused my claim because I am a type 1 Diabetic.

I have been a diabetic over 30 years and although in the 1990s car insurance used to discriminate because of diabetes, the law changed and this discrimination was stopped. I only found the full details of the specific related condition exclusions through UNUM after making the claim and being subsequently rejected. It's hard enough living with a chronic medical condition for over 30 year to then suffer 2 strokes, thinking if anything happens my critical illness will help pay the mortgage.

Now I feel cheated, why can a company like UNUM take money from me and refuse to pay when I need them. It didn't state anywhere when joining that specific related condition exclusions would apply. It's worse than online theft, it's legal theft. UPPER BACK. Seen him in Dec of same year too for another check up for same issue. Meanwhile my doc sent me to get full scans of my entire back. Jan of 2019 my work offers Short Term which I elect to get. Go see doc again about the scans who then tells me I do have upper back issues and, "Oh by the way your lower back looks to have problems as well." I continued to tell the docs it's mainly my upper back and only seldom my lower. Now the docs decide my back needs operated on before my upper back issues can be taken care of.

Nov 2019 I finally decide to let them fix my lower back just so they would get over it and try to help me with my upper back. Have surgery, send all my papers to Unum only for them to deny my claim and say it's pre-existing because the doc listed lower back issues in Nov and Dec of 2018 and short term didn't start until Jan 2019. I have had a Unum Critical Care Policy for over 10 years. I obtained the policy because of my spouse’s family history Of multiple cancers. My husband developed non alcoholic SteatoHepatitis that has turned into cirrhosis. He is now in MAJOR ORGAN FAILURE OF THE LIVER which is one of the organs covered on the policy. His condition has rapidly declined and they are refusing payment because he is too sick for transplant.

In the information I received, the paperwork said proof of organ failure, such as UNOS listing for transplant or in the event of his death from organ failure. I told the representative he has been denied transplant. The representative said we need proof that he is in organ failure. Our Hepatologist sent that proof along with the reason for denial of transplant. Now they are saying they only pay claims when patient was listed for transplant or dies while on the transplant list. They said I have a right to appeal the decision. I’m waiting on a copy of my policy to see what I’m actually appealing. Appeals can be faxed but not emailed. There is no access to policy online. Request for emailed copy of policy will take 3 business days. Workers call back but don’t leave messages if you're working. Asking for a priority callback means waiting a week.

Starting my FMLA claim through unum was a nightmare. Turned firm because he wasn’t sick enough, only approved after he was hospitalized in ICU. Online policy says I have 300+ hours available of FMLA, when I called for another item they said my FMLA claim had expired 2 weeks prior. The company is very fortunate to have heartless, ruthless, creative employees that I’m sure save the company a lot of money. Reading the reviews here in addition to my own experiences, I think the critical care Policy is a complete waste of money. I am contacting my attorney. I hope that helps.

UNUM and it manipulated relationship with doctors. Doctors don't have is (Extra Time) to deal with UNUM. At a work event Smashed my shoulder, tore my Ligaments clear of my AC joint, completely floating, collarbone, broke loose at joint and pushing skin up an inch above my shoulder. ER offered no surgery/ repair option. Four surgeons offered no solution or option, including Mayo clinic in Rochester, Mn. My GP kept sending me to therapy and pain clinics.

After a year I gave up on a realistic repair to shoulder. The opportunity had passed. It seems if you're above a certain age, or not working in the occupation of heavy labor, they don’t offer a surgery option at the ER. I was just a revolving cash cow for UnityPoint hospitals and clinics..UNUM is vigorous demanding from updates from doctors. Then UNUM wiggled me off my life insurance policy stating I was not getting enough doctor updates and canceled the policy...then came the MORE Demands and more pressure on my doctors. Requiring excessive time filling out uniforms and answering phone calls. Then Unum hires the IME (independent medical examiner) to make a report, a report based on reading UNUM's excessive 1200 page patient report.

IME does a cheap bone Xray (not proper test to show tissue damage), and a physical exam that is tainted by UNUM's 1200 page opinion report.. The IME has a cut and paste exam procedure and overlooks obvious pain and restrictions. In fact IME blamed me of being over sensitive and faking my inabilities. In the IME’s report my hands looked excellent and had fine working motor skills. In reality, I refused to offer the doctor hand as my right index finger was lacerated the week before, still full of sutures. I was also accused of being overweight and not cooperating. It was obvious I was judged as a healthy person trying to abuse UNUM benefits.

Unum had stopped/throttled payments off and on before, pressuring me for more documentation from doctors. Then they denied coverage completely and stooped payments. My GP relationship was compromised and GP didn’t want to do any more UNUM paperwork. Now I wasting time and money. Lost job and no income for over a year... The stress was insane. Then I had a widowmaker heart attack! Fire department brought me back with a defibrillator.I decided to look into the UNUM appeal process and called a few disability insurance lawyers. Lawyers were to receive 40-60 percent of continued unum payments if they win appeal.
Leftover payments Left me in federal poverty rate and unable to pay for medical insurance.
So I went through the UNUM 1200 pages myself and added discrepancies and bias situations and sent to file a UNUM appeal a few weeks ago.
At this point I just want the stress gone.
If by chance I win the appeal I still have to live with pain and dysfunctional shoulder.

I’ve completely lost trust in my GP, UNUM, and Doctors riding the shirt tails of insurance companies. I hope I live long enough to find help for others living this Hell..

Then they appoint their friends to Agencies like the Board of industrial appeals, and Washington state workers compensation Agency, or the Washington State Human Rights Commission - and in turn those appointed People in those agencies to keep their jobs are Paid to Deny all Claims, and wait for the injured to die, or have another Agency, Insurance Company, or Family Member pay the bills all the while the Responsible Government Employers, Pay nothing to the Injured Workers then take your tax money and buy more Defective Buses, and Machinery from Businesses with Huge Government contracts, while UNUM is Sucking an Estimated $15,000.00 Thousand dollars a month from Clark County Public Transportation Benefit Area, while the Employees have to Beg for insurance benefits that have been paid for since 2002.

It's your money for the buses, the Cummins engines, the UNUM insurance payments to the employer, to the human rights commission, the Wa. state DOSH inspectors, and the WA. State Labor and Industries Agency. When will there be some good protection for our workers, without having to pay a $20,000 dollar retainer for someone to help? I have been out of work since 9/10/2019 due to chronic fibromyalgia, migraines, anxiety, disk degenerative disease, loose stools, spinal stenosis, spondylosis, scoliosis and a large mass that was found in chest. I am in constant pain and I work for Providence Northeast Columbia SC. So Unum has constantly strung me on, every time my physicians fill out or submit supporting detailed and accurate paperwork they would ask for something else to be done. They even had me to complete a questionnaire form as well as my physicians to verify that I had not been seen 4/2019-6/2019 however they tried to find out anything on me to prevent them from having to pay me while I am out of work. However I was told by Sabrina at Unum that if this was a previous diagnosis that they would only pay me for 4 weeks instead of for the entire time I would be out from work.

My physician I see for my fibromyalgia wrote me out and said with a return date of 10/30/2019 however that would depend on treatment plan as well as Endocrinologist that I will be seeing for the large chest mass that was an"accidental finding" because the MRI I had done was on my neck and back. I will also be seeing a Neurologist for the severe migraines I have. On 9/30/2019 Sabrina sent out another form (physician statement) needing to be completed by my physician (Rheumatologist) with a deadline of 11/9/2019.

On 10/2/2019 I was told by Sabrina (Claims Representative @Unum) that my claim had been denied and that she had 2 nurses and her boss to look at my paperwork but it was denied because the initial Dr. (neurologist Surgeon) that took me out of work said that I could return on 9/23/2019 however I explained to Sabrina I only saw him to rule out surgery wasn't what I needed. However my rheumatologist that I see for my fibromyalgia wrote me out from 9/24/2019 till 10/30/2019 depending upon treatment plan and two addt'l consults that I will be having. However if I went back to work she, (my dr) listed several restrictions such as no heavy lifting greater than 15lbs, no repetitive bending nor stooping, no standing greater than 3 hours per day.

Unum made an ignorant decision not to pay me for a benefit that I pay for out of my check when I was able to work. It's a shame to be ill and stressed due to no income and to know that you took out STD and LTD during open enrollment. Going thru what I have went thru with UNUM was terrible. Ever since I spoke with Sabrina on 10/2 @ 2:30p I can't stop thinking about my denial and to know I work for a hospital that doesn't care about their employees to invest in another company to take over STD and LTD saddens my heart. Providence and others hired a company (UNUM) that is ripping off employees and Unum I'm sure is happy because it's free money in their pockets and probably even getting kickbacks for the end of the year bonuses and etc because they are I'm quite sure of are under the amount of claims they process vs deny.

I hope that Unum gets exposed for what they are doing to people and when you are sick and going through being denied of your benefits is the last thing you want to here ESPECIALLY when you pay for your benefits and it isn't company paid. Forms after forms and some I had to pay to get filled out as well as go sit at the Dr's office until it was faxed in. Although I am sick I did everything I could responsibly to make this process smooth by making calls and going to the physician office until the fax were recv'd. Little did Unum know I had a copy of all my records even information they requested which is how I caught Sabrina in a lie that she tried to say about one of my physcians, now had I not had my records and copies of forms I may have believed her but I thank God he gave me common sense and that I had my copies for my own records.

Another thought. Why were nurses looking at my file at Unum to determine if I was disabled or not, and in what century is a nurse degree higher than a physician? My point is dr. to dr would have not denied my claim and the two nurses that work with Sabrina that decided on my denial along with her manager must be from or on another planet that their credentials is higher than my physician to determine what is disabling or not. The facts, the evidence were there but UNUM just didn't want to pay me for what I have paid on every paycheck. I would rate them -0.

I will write this about me but I am only one person in thousands or maybe millions. Millions is more likely since this includes people from all over the world. I have always been a hard working person and picking a career as an auto technician and working hard to advance thru the years to the highest level as a Toyota Technician should prove this fact. I want you all to know this because I am a taxpayer, voter, father, husband, brother, and law abiding citizen. Here is my story. Seven years ago while I was at work, I fell down. I started dropping things from my hands. I noticed that I was gradually losing strength. I wasn't myself anymore, and slowly losing the ability to do my job. I was paid on a commission type basis. So if I couldn't work as hard and fast as usual then my pay amount dropped. I fault for a few more years as I struggled to continue.

Of course I had medical insurance, short term disability, long-term, and death insurance. I have paid for these policies for over 30 years. About four years ago, I had to leave my job due to illness and it was really becoming unsafe for myself to even be in a shop. During these years I have seen a handful of Doctors that struggled with diagnosing my issues. A clear diagnosis was uncertain and Unum insurance company demanded one. But what these doctors did agree on was that I was disabled and continuing to get worse. I was unable to continue to perform a mechanic’s job by far and the doctors noted this in their records. I was eventually Diagnosed after years and multiple doctor visits, I even took a plane to Rochester, Minnesota to the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion. I am now considered a patient there also.

I hope you are still reading along and I'm not boring you so far. Well, I find this very hard to say, but I have ALS disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease. As you most likely know, My days are numbered and there's No sunshine at the end of my rainbow. But this is not a pity party about me. My whole life was about providing for my loved ones. I am so saddened that I feel that I let everyone down because now they provide for me. This was not in my game plan. I had UNUM insurance whom has worked overtime on denying my claim. They ignored my doctors’ opinions and records, they went way low on my estimated yearly salary, and they prolonged any judgment about me collecting any funds. Which also cost me my savings. They flooded my doctors’ offices with letters and ringing phone calls for info that they could use against me.

I had one doctor out of about 7 that I have seen in the very early stages of this disease that I had seen while I was still working that told UNUM that she didn't feel that I was disabled. I wasn't far enough along to confirm any diagnosis. She also didn't care to research my illness. So I fired her. Unum used her records as their source to refuse my situation. I had to sue UNUM. My attorney told me that I couldn't sue for damages because Congress passed a law that prevented these types of lawsuits. Unum caused me so much stress that my health was really taking a hit. The attorney said that due to a bill that Congress passed stated that I can only sue Unum to force them to honor the policy that they sold me. This means that Unum has no recoil to deny claimant claims. So they Steal and rob from their customers constantly everyday.

This attorney was going to take benefit money's from me that was rightfully mine. This attorney recently dropped my case. He said that there's just not enough money in it to fight them any further. Unum gets to deny me, keep their money. I get NOTHING.... My family gets NOTHING. When I die and I will, There's NO insurance money to help them that I paid for for so many years. I now live on my wife's income. She works over-time everyday. My mother died about nine years ago and left me about 100k dollars that I put in saving, it's all gone now, spent on bills. We have been searching our home for stuff to sell. I live in Spring Texas in a nice 250k house that we have called home for so many years that is now going up for sale. I was denied Social Security benefits also as a normal thing that I have been told.

My attorney has dropped appealing this also. I guess what I am trying to tell you is that, I understand that people shouldn't be able to sue insurance companies for millions of dollars or for profit. But if there's a law that states that a person can sue an insurance company for POOR FAITH (If Proven) for five times the benefit amount, then these insurance companies wouldn't mess us over so badly. Just maybe they would be forced to take care of all the others that are legitimately disabled like they promise to do so in their policies that they sell us. I have read so many other people's comments about what Unum has done to them. I even read one about an ex-employee of Unum getting messed over by them. This is a crime or should be.

I wish you all good health now and in the future. And I pray to GOD that you never get sick or have Unum insurance or any other insurance company that is in business to steal from us. Don't ever put yourselves in our positions. Thank You for reading my story. My wishes is for everyone to take notice of this and copy and paste it. then send it to anyone and everyone on the internet, Government offices, State Reps, etc. We the people need help Badly. I hope that I'm still around to see change in this. Thanks Again, Wade.

I had a heart attack in September 2018 and was released and readmitted a few days later into intensive care for what my Doctor said that she believed was a stroke that took my hearing and I was in ICU for 2 weeks and when they took me out of the ICU I could not hear anything and to this day I am Deaf so we filed the claims with Unum for Heart Attack and a stroke which both was declined so I appealed it and started dealing with Teresa ** Lead Appeals Specialist and she had me going back and forth to the Dr.Office and faxing paperwork to her and my Primary care Dr. filled out all the paperwork and wrote a letter saying that she believed I had suffered a stroke that left me Deaf and they declined that one again and the Heart Attack so she told me when I get the denial letter to take it to the Cardiologist and they would give me the documents needed to support the heart attack so I did and faxed them over to her and 3 days later I called her to follow up and she informed me we still didn't have the supportive documents that was needed so I went back to my Cardiologist and told them she says we didn't have enough supportive documents to prove a heart attack.

Well by this time they were getting fed up also so she told me to have the Dr office call her and she would tell them what she needed so I did and I contacted Mrs.** a few days later and was talking with her and she said it clearly shows that I had the heart attack but we still did not have enough supportive documents so the Dr called her again and I followed up again today to find out that I was declined again and she mailed the letters yesterday and when I received them to take them back to the Cardiologist and maybe they could figure out what supportive documents she needed to pay my claim but the funniest part about this was when my Dr. made the comment you must be dealing with Unum and he said we have went around and around with them every time a patient tries to claim the benefits.

Now this is something I had not even opened the page on Unum until today and sure enough I started reading the reviews and everyone had went around and around with them but you know I never complained when they were removing the money out of each of my paychecks but it seems like when you need them it's impossible. I asked Mrs.** today if I needed to get an attorney to help me get what they owe me and she said that was up to me and when I get the letter to take it down to my Cardiologist and let them read it because my EKG numbers didn't support a heart attack and that's when I told her my aunt went to the ER and they ran the EKG and said nothing was showing and the next day she was having triple bypass.

This is just a way to get out of paying what they owe the insured. I could understand if I was just laying around drawing SSI and Disability but that's not the case. I want to go back to work because I like my job and fellow employees which before this I always highly recommended that the employees look at the coverages and to remember you can never have too much insurance but after dealing with this I promise I will share my experience with all the other managers when it's time to decide who we will be spending our money on. Just Beware of UNUM. They don't want to pay and they will run you around until you get fed up and quit. That's what they want you to do so make sure you read the reviews before signing your name to anything.

I am currently approved with Unum long-term disability. However, it was not easy. I currently have multiple sclerosis and while many people are able to work for many years after diagnosis, I ended up with multiple problems and diagnoses concurrently. I had a fall that resulted in a spinal cord injury and neck surgery that was critical. A few months later I ended up in the hospital with autoimmune pancreatitis and Crohn’s disease. I have now had many rheumatology positive testing which could possibly be lupus or something else but either way is definitely rheumatology. Unfortunately, all this runs in the family and I just happened to get all of it not just one or the other. Because I am 38 years old and I look very well and healthy they constantly bother me.

I have had surveillance multiple times and caught them. I have already been approved by the state for Social Security disability. But either way my disability insurance with Unum is for my own occupation which they refuse to release me to because I was a nurse practitioner and they say that I am a liability in danger to others meaning I could hurt a patient more than take care of them. Just for your information that was devastating to me and I was not expecting that to ever happen. I expected to work part time or maybe be told I couldn’t work night shift but never that they would never release me to work again as a nurse practitioner. I find it in saying that these people will do anything to make you feel like you’re doing something wrong and you actually don’t want to work.

I was living the high life with my family and had just bought my 5000 square-foot home moved my family to an upscale neighborhood and school system for all this to happen. I had nine months worth of living saved up which doesn’t matter at all if you lose it all while waiting for insurance and making a hell of a lot less than what you’re used to. However I will continue to fight them just because they are so shady. One of the surveillance tactics was a friend posted a picture of us at a restaurant when I had lunch with her and he found me that way and hung out of his truck at a stoplight to take a picture of me driving for some strange reason. I never said I couldn’t drive.

Another one was a white small car that had letters or decal letters with three numbers a-in the word news acted like they were a news company who followed me all the way from my neighborhood all the way to my son's football game. I am very thankful that I have a consultant name Linda and her last name is ** Who helps me deal with this horrible company and gives me a lot of comfort. You should look up her blog. The bottom line is you either hope to make it long enough that it won’t matter when they find A way to terminate your claim or they finally give you a settlement which I have been praying every day for so I can get rid of them. If you look her up she will help manage your claim and give you peace of mind.

Disability means if you were to work would it put you down where you couldn’t function in life? It does not mean that you can’t function at all or live a life. My last relapse was the entire month of March and April almost in. There is not a single job in this world that would be understanding and not fire me had I been working. Don’t give into this company. Pay the money and get the consultant that I recommended and do everything you can to fight for your life because that’s what I do for myself because of my husband and my three children that are my world and I can guarantee you that my future of being in a wheelchair which I’ve already been told is not something I asked for so I couldn’t work.

I would much rather be working than knowing that my future is doomed to being in a wheelchair and losing sensation and doing all the things I thought I would do when I retired. I will not let this company get me down and I will do everything I can to enjoy the life I can while I can with my husband and my children and hope that we can make it as long as we can with this horrible company that only wants to destroy. I will not let this company get me down and I will do everything I can to enjoy life I can while I can with my husband and my children and hope that we can make it as long as we can with this horrible company that only wants to destroy people and families. Injured at work in December. Go to the doctor the next day then several follow up visits. Determined it was a torn rotator cuff and sent to a specialist. Turn in the paperwork for Unum to say they only pay for 2 follow up visits even though it was 2 totally different doctors. Orthopedic doctor does injections. When they don’t deliver results he sent me to physical therapy. So I call and ask if they are going to pay off anything else. Was told to send in the paperwork which I did. Then it gets reject due to the physical therapy did not start within 90 days of the injury.

I as the patient did not determine the treatment to be used or the timeframe. Called and was told to file an appeal. I ask if it would be an independent company reviewing the appeal. Was told no. They do that internally which we all know they would never find in the patient's favor. When I ask if they would prefer to have an attorney involved was blown off like they could care less. If you have this insurance just take the premium money and put it in an account. You’ll be much better off.

Had foot surgery on April 29th. Doctor sent over appropriate UNUM paperwork stating that I would have to be off my foot for 10-12 weeks. Which getting to this point was a challenge in its own right. It has been a total struggle to say the least. They only approved me for the first 4 weeks and from that point the struggle gets worse. Had to jump through hoops every week to get approved week by week. And the 3rd to last week I only received a small portion of my funds. Which happened again on the 2nd to last payment. Which the remaining funds at this time are up in the air. At the end of the day this company will definitely make you work endlessly to get the funds you’ve been paying for out of your check every week. Customer service is lacking and the UNUM portal lacks up to date info. I’m hoping my employer will be looking for another secondary insurance company after this is all said and done....

I am also suffering with a prolapse disc, cervical neck where some days I can’t even move out the bed due to the disc pressing on a nerve which leaves me in agony, so how I sit in a office all day without pain is beyond me. On all kinds of medication which makes me drowsy as hell, I don’t know what illness UNUM expect you to have until there medical team decide to pay out.

They clearly think also you are fit for work after a family member is murdered. Sorry that’s effected me mentally. My GP has signed me off work understandably, UNUM have had all my medical reports. I have had occupational health reviews which have stated I need more time off. UNUM staff are rude with no empathy at all. They don’t even ask how you are when you ring. They talk over you and don’t listen. If anyone is thinking of taken out a policy with this company make sure you are on your last legs before you get a payout otherwise don’t go near this company. Anytime I’ve called for clarification I've only left more confused. I’ve talked to countless representatives and leave managers who have all danced around questions I’ve asked. There has been time input on my behalf for absences that were invalid. They fail to explain the way they handle time management as well as absences. This company shouldn’t be used as most people needing any kind of medical leave are typically not doing alright and have enough strife. Long Term Disability - During open enrollment in 2018, on October 30th, I applied for long term disability coverage. The same day I faxed the completed eligibility of insurance forms and received a confirmation that the fax was received. In December I received an email stating that they needed my eligibility of insurance forms, I called and spoke with them and was told that they had the completed form but hadn’t reviewed them yet. In January, I again received an email stating that they needed my eligibility of insurance forms. I phoned them again and was informed that they did have the forms but hadn’t reviewed them yet.

On February 26, 2019 I logged into my employers benefit site and found a notice in red that the long term disability coverage was waived. I then contacted our benefit administrator. She looked into the issue and said she was informed that I hadn’t sent in my eligibility of insurance forms. I still had the forms as well as the original fax confirmation. That same evening (Feb. 26) I faxed all of that to Unum again including the original fax confirmation.

On the morning of February 27, 2019 I received an email from the benefits administrator stating that she was informed that I had been declined for medical reasons. Funny, that I could be denied when they supposedly had not received my eligibility of insurance forms. I then contacted Unum to ask why I was denied. The representative said she could not tell me, I was then put on hold to see if an underwriter could speak with me. An underwriter was available so I was transferred but had to leave a voice mail.

Short Term Disability - A claim was started as I was scheduled for hip replacement surgery on January 7, 2019. The claim was approved and I had no problems with receiving the weekly payments. On either January 29th or 30th I received a phone call from my assigned case manager. She wanted to know why I hadn’t returned to work and stated that they felt I should be back at work from their review of my job description. I found this interesting since I thought my doctor was in charge of my care and the determination of when I should return to work. In informed her that I was to see the doctor again on February 20th and that I anticipated he would release me to return to work on Monday February 25th. She informed me that was unacceptable and if I saw him on the 20th I needed to be back to work on the 21st.

During this entire conversation it is an understatement to say that she was snippy and condescending to me. I feel that since this is a service paid for by my employer, as the employee I am the customer by default and I shouldn’t have had to be disrespected on the phone by her. I did have my doctor appointment on the 20th and as anticipated he released me to return to work on Monday February 25th. I had been instructed by the case manager to call her after I saw the doctor to update her. Since I didn’t want to deal with her again after the way she behaved during our previous conversation I made it a point to call at lunch time in hopes that I would get her voice mail which it did. I also uploaded the return to work notice online.

UNUM apparently routinely takes back all disability dollars they pay out to company employees who get ill while employed. Oddly enough, they insist on knowing the initial amount that SSD pays the ill employee at the time they are declared disabled. Then they demand the amount from the employee adjusted by a few dollars. All legal, according to them. One needs a strong lawyer to challenge them and question the employee's company as to STD and LTD coverage agreements and understandings. With Unum's collection practice of almost all they have paid out to the employee, it begs the question - do they do this only to companies' employees in which the coverage is solely provided for by the companies?! And then, do companies get a return from them?!

Later on the same week, I found out I have gestational diabetes on top of it. This is actually more of a cause and effect type thing just backwards as GD can cause the carpal tunnel. Few days later, losing the use of my right arm for helping me out of bed gets me in hospital with a bleed from straining to get up. All the while, I am in dire pain. I can only take ** and it doesn't touch the pain. I see a surgeon and tell him about my wrist and an unrelated lump under my arm. He cannot do the wrist. Lump needs surgery after my daughter is born. Carpal gets referred to orthopedic surgeon... at the earliest date of a month later.

Two more hospital visits, OB appointments are now monitoring me an hour every week. Working on my therapy for my perinatal depression. Now, I have carpal in both hands, which was a 50/50 shot anyways. Doc puts me on light bed rest for slightly elevated BP and the fact that my diet has to be very monitored and regulated. I also have informed UNUM of every thing that has put me in and out of the hospital. Today, they denied my short term disability. I haven't had money in almost 2 months. I am going to be homeless and car-less thanks to them. I have no one to borrow the money from.

I paid them to protect me well before this was ever an issue. Now, 3 weeks from being induced because of my GD, I have this to cope with. There is no help in the picture and all of this for what will be lucky to be 600 a month. Their STD calculations are just plain wrong. Their formulation is set to pay the least amount they can get away with. They use your monthly salary times 12 months divided by 52 weeks and then take 70% of that amount (per the contract we are paid 70% of our monthly salary). I am salaried so I get the same amount each month regardless of how many weeks in a month there are. I calculated it at my monthly times the 70% and divided that by 4 weeks. The difference was a few hundred dollars.

On top of that they said they calculated it wrong. They based it on the same formulation I calculated it at (so even they know they're scamming people) and now I owe back most of the money I received because I was overpaid the weekly amount AND paid for 4 weeks when I should have been paid for 2 (there is a 30 day ineligibility wait period they conveniently forgot about). I received the money AFTER I returned to work after 6 weeks of STD (FMLA leave). This was my first claim ever and I have been with this company for years through my employer. Last July 7th, I had right meniscectomy at the hospital where I work. After the surgery I filed a claim for accidental insurance but UNUM declined my claim saying that is not caused by an accident. I'm am very sure that I torn my meniscus from playing and not by just sleeping. I submitted all the documents related to my injury like MD chart records, MRI, bills and etc but still it was declined again. Now they told me to file an appeal which is very frustrating. The only thing I can say is that PLEASEEEE don't sign up on this company. I heard Allstate is way better than them.

I purchased the LTC policy when I was 57. I am now 80 so I have paid many, many premiums since its inception. It was the best option, I was told, for a widow. The policy was $1900 per year. Three years ago, the policy increased and I now pay $3400 per year. This coming year it will increase to $4000. I was told that the cost would never increase. However, the cost can increase if the "class of insurance was allowed to increase by the state." I bought the policy in New York State. My experience is the same as Doris of Easthampton, MD. and, yes, that state had allowed the "class" to increase. That clause is in the written policy but was never mentioned by the representative. I now have my Series 6 & 7 license and understand these things better but that does not help with the much higher premium! I am just hoping that I will receive the benefits that are promised in the LTC policy.

While waiting for a check they informed me in mid June that they had no record of me filing for long term. Finally after an hour on the phone I was told it would be reviewed and I should receive something within 45 days.

When I called back a month later I was told my Dr wasn't responding to information requests. I called the Dr and was advised that they never received any requests for information. Unum then called me stating that my authorization form had expired and they overlooked it. I signed new forms and returned them. I received a letter stating I was approved and as soon as they received my payroll information from my employer I would be getting a check. My employer sent in that information quite some time ago and I have yet to receive a dime after 3 months.

I obtained STD July 2017 as part of benefit package with my job. A standard selection STD, LTD, etc. In early 2018 a doctor discovered that my hernia needed to be repaired. A surgery I had in 2013 during another unexpected major surgery. Over 4 years later, the doctor discovers that my hernia has ruptured. The previous surgery was an elective so, I was planning to use vacation and involuntary "change over", but found out the hernia needed to be repaired, which would be a 6 week recovery. Had the surgery 06/21/2018. I went back to work 07/09/2018 because the claim was still pending from June. It is 07/23/2018 they have been contacting physicians to obtain information to confirm that I had not been treated in the prior 12 months before securing STD benefits.

Did I mention the benefit selection was for a new job? Still nothing to concerning because I had not received any treatment. The issue is that they have not paid me, although it was a 7 day elimination period, since I filed the claim. I am back to work and lost money that is needed for my household. Unum's has not made a decision and asked that I contact the doctors to let them know they need to return the forms. Well, Unum, the doctors are not my primary physicians. These are the doctors I have seen when there was a medical issue, other than a hernia, i.e. cold, women issues, etc. All of which were related to something entirely different than concerning a hernia.

Stay away from Unum or strategically schedule surgeries because had I waited to have the surgery in July, 2018 the 12 month pre-existing research may have been avoided. However, I am not too sure because the practice to scrutinize a hernia repair that was as much as surprise to me, has become a reason not to pay because it ruptured after 4 years and only one doctor caught it. The saddest part is that I contacted Unum a couple months before to ask about my STD for electing to take care of the hernia because I knew the recovery time was longer than the procedure I was initially going to have done at my own opportunity cost of vacation time. To date, still nothing. "Pending" I have been back to work longer than I took off to have the procedure.

Run for your life. Seriously. So I needed a deep cleaning to prevent gum disease. My gums were clearly receding, my teeth clearly needed more than just a regular cleaning. Frankly, I've finally found a great dentist who cares about the long term health of my teeth. Wish I could say the same about the insurance. I had UNUM through my employer (yes, had, because they dropped that nightmare of insurance this year and switched to something else). My dentist estimated the expense of the procedure, and I paid my part. Everything was great, my gums and teeth looked and felt fantastic. But then UNUM decided that based on the X-Rays my tooth decay wasn't sufficient enough for a deep cleaning. Literally. So they declined to pay their part. My dentist has to re-submit everything over and over, but still the result was the same: "not enough of decay". Really? What is "enough"? Teeth falling out? Deep cleaning is supposed to prevent that.

This is not only frustrating, but also plain stupid: I've prevented a way larger claim. Would you rather have a claim for gum disease treatment or root canal work? I don't think so. Today I received that final bill. They refused to pay what they were supposed to... it has been 2 years of negotiations between UNUM and my dental office (by the way, all IN NETWORK). If you are looking for a personal coverage - don't consider UNUM. If you are an employer, please do your employees a favor and look for a better insurance provider. As I mentioned, my employer dropped them this year. Best decision ever.

I am on STD due to an accident and worsening health because of it. My company has been supportive about approving my leave, however UNUM is a nightmare to work with. I have been faithful in providing documentation to them on a regular basis, as have my doctors. I have even done more than asked several times in order to give them warm and fuzzies. Yet, they bother my doctors non-stop to get every single piece of documentation there is. They also make me jump through hoops--with various evaluations even though they have plenty of evidence from doctors. Once I jump through one hoop -- they ask for the next hoop. Here is the deal with UNUM. They seem to be an organizational mess. Their website is rudimentary and sloppily designed. You put information out there (e.g., doctor names/addresses) and they seem to ignore it and dredge up old addresses from ten years ago.

They don't seem to read what I send them and have no inclination or ability to understand the big picture. When we do send too much medical evidence--they complain and need more time. They don't seem to have real clinical knowledge about medical conditions--so they have unrealistic expectations for recovery and ask dumb questions (like why aren't you all better after six months of treatment). The worst part is they continuously HOLD UP PAYMENTS. They chop the STD into small durations and STOP COVERING you until they get the next set of documents and leisurely make their decisions to continue your disability payments. Meanwhile they create a perfect financial storm for their beneficiaries. I hate to say it but I believe all disability programs including the federal government are intentionally this way.

There is no time to heal when you are on disability. You are too busy jumping through expensive hoops, convincing them you are not lying, and convincing your providers to fill out their prolific, poorly designed forms and providing them with volumes of information. I hired an attorney because I can read the writing on the wall about how they will make my life hell during LTD. Disability (and workman's comp) insurers and administrators like this are ruining the healthcare system. Because they are sloppy, inefficient and insincere if their efforts to pay for benefits, doctors don't want to participate in any sort of case that may involve disability, beneficiaries are financially ruined, and this is becoming a system that can't operate without attorneys. One can only hope ALL of them have to experience disability at some point and reap what they sow.

I haven't received a check since I've been off from Unum, so I called and they said that they don't pay on mental disorders. I told the guy that vertigo is not a mental disorder and that I had never had panic attacks or anxiety attacks unroll I started having vertigo. He told me I could appeal it. I just think this is a way for them not to pay me. Vertigo is a condition that comes on without warning and it can cause panic attacks because you're so dizzy and can't control it. I need my money, I pay into this and it's not right. I didn't tell the doctor to take me off, he said he wanted to make sure there wasn't underlying problems, so I have to go to a cardiologist and wear a heart monitor and pray that it has nothing to do with my heart, but all this stress is uncalled for. I don't have a mental illness, I have VERTIGO that can cause anxiety and panicky attacks. There is a big difference.

I have been trying to receive my benefits due to injury. On 3 Sept. 2017 I was injured in my spinal column and have been out of work for over 4 months. My employer sent appropriate paperwork to get benefits started and Unum sent me forms. It took my employer several days to get me in to see their clinic although ER stated no return to work but needed to see ortho and MRI and follow up. The doctor said I could return to light duty without MRI then I had my MRI results came back with several herniated discs. I returned to ask doctor about treatment and made him knowledgeable that insurance company had no scheduled ortho and neither did they and was in severe pain. He decided upon reading results to take me out of work till ortho can see me for further review...

I'm still waiting till 29th of month to finally see doc in pain and barely mobile without mass assistance of extremely strong prescription meds. I sent all paperwork to Unum and I hadn't heard anything. Several weeks go by and next thing I know I get another paper packet so I call. They say, "Never received" so I faxed this time.

In this time frame I had spoke to several people whom said I would get paid usually within 5 days after papers received. I called to ask if they were received and told yes and as we were reviewing papers received I told rep about doctor at clinic refuse to fill out statement but had sent copy of last visit removing me till further review and I was told that should be plenty... She said she would have case manager call me back to discuss if they needed anything else when the case manager called me back.

She was reviewing the forms with me and then states, "Oh you were here at work. Well we don't cover that. That your insurance would only cover if you were hurt anywhere else basically." I said, "Excuse me ma'am. My company sent everything over who the insurance is through and deducted through my paychecks to you and I was told several times over the phone as soon as the paperwork was fully filled out that the claim would be processed" and I would be receiving payment pretty fast and then now I'm being told that my claim is being denied because it happened at work and my workman's comp is responsible for paying my money and they are not do anything.

So I asked to speak to her supervisor and her supervisor calls me claiming the same thing that the policy doesn't cover if you were hurt at work yet my employer themselves who is head of the workman's comp sent the paperwork over to them and had also told me that it would cover most likely only be additional one-third pay to go to at the 2/3 pay of workman's comp. Apparently the supervisor had claimed that she have spoke with my employer's office saying that I was upset my payout was only supposed to be for up to 13 weeks.

I have been out of work for over 18 weeks. They are due the full payout. I have met plenty of medical proof and have paid my benefit every week and was told that everything would be fine as soon as I receive the paperwork and then as soon as they receive the paperwork told me they were denying my claim and that I can appeal it but they weren't going to do anything about it. I told them I was going to let everybody I know that I work with the same thing about all this that I have been reading and I will make sure that everybody that I can pulls their benefits from them as well as I will be posting this all over social media. When I told the lady on the phone about that she said that she will be getting in touch with their Communications expert. Apparently going to try to block me from letting people know what this company has been doing to people.

I will be calling that state head insurance. I'm going to be calling an attorney and I could care less if I see a penny out of this and the attorney gets every bit of it. Unum needs to be shut down. They need to pay back the people they owe money for and CEOs need to go to jail actually. I actually read on another site on Facebook where the company was found to have a denial quota and that they were found guilty and fined millions of dollars and are still doing it today. They were told to review over 200,000 cases and go back and pay people back and have done not even 10% of that. The government continues to let them operate even though they know that this company is a total fraud. There will be media. There will be repercussions.

I may be only one person but through all these other post I see there are many and I have read places that there are class action suits against Unum. I encourage everybody on here to look up those class action suit and find your Justice. Let's shut them down people. This company should not exist any longer messing with the small man. It's total thievery.

We know that insurance companies ain't in the habit of wanting to pay most of the time but when people have every bit of their paperwork and have done everything they're supposed to do and have proof that they have been hurt and were sold a policy that insurance company should pay. That's what your insurance company is there for to have your back and any company that is selling insurance to their employees that they know is this bad and have such a bad rating might be a company you want to take a second look at keeping a career with because they obviously don't care if you were to get hurt you would be of no use to them any further.

My advice spread the word through any social media and through any internet site you can. I will be doing the same and I will be making as many phone calls as I can because I have nothing but time on my hands due to the fact I'm sitting here waiting to even start healing. I will try to do what I can for the rest of you that have been wronged.

UNUM informed me the $180 a month long term disability payments from UNUM have stopped as of my last birthday. These payments were not given to me, instead were held by them to pay back the workers comp monies I received upon losing my job. They explained Unum no longer owes me any more money that can be applied to the "debt I owe".

There is a $19,000 + amount due and they are requesting payment in full. The State of Florida still considers me disabled, but Social Security does not. Unum never placed a lien on me when I received my Social Security back benefits, they just sent me a collection letter. I writing this review because this kind of policy situation puts an insurance company in full control of my life... very scary and there should be a better way to handle disability claims. I still can't work and the little money I do have is crucial to my well being, certainly need it more than UNUM.

I see the same complaints here over and over about UNUM claiming not to receive doctor notes. I can assure you I have followed up over and over again throughout my experience so far with UNUM and they make this claim even when you have proof that records were sent. Throughout the short-term process I would go 4-5 weeks at times without pay while they claimed to not receive documents. I follow up with the doctor's offices and they have dates and times documents were sent via fax and then we find out they now want them faxed to a different number. This was a game that happened over and over again. I honestly believe they do this to try to run out the clock on your claim so they can justify denying it.

Now I am about 9 weeks without pay again, transitioning over to long-term and AGAIN they are claiming to be missing documents even though I called in to speak with representatives about the transition from short to long-term and was assured they had all my medical records and it should not be an issue. Well they came back and have re-requested ALL of the same documents over and over again with my doctors... One of them even giving up faxing them and instead sent them overnight through UPS with a signature confirmation for proof that they were received. No wonder our medical costs are so high when you have insurance companies being so horrible at their jobs or blatantly doing these things on purpose! I do not know about most of you but not many people have a 4-6 month nest egg sitting there to cover all your bills and such when these companies play these games with our lives.

My automobile has already been repossessed now and my home is in jeopardy next! I had to make tough choices, keep my lights on, get groceries, fill medications and pay for doctor visits or keep my car. And now this month, NO Christmas here at our house and literally no food next month it seems! Go over to the UNUM Facebook page and share your stories, I have more friends/followers than they do and the only posts on their page are mostly negative... I had to do a lot of searching to find this page and I feel we all need to get our stories/experiences out there in social media to expose these kinds of practices!

When my spouse bought long term care insurance nearly 20 years ago, she was guaranteed that rates would "never" increase. Her annual premium in 1999 was $1,963. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has allowed them to increase rates so that the annual premium is $2,799. Now they are allowing another 40% increase to $3,912 per year. My spouse is now 75 years old. This 40% increase is unconscionable given the number of years she has paid into the insurance plan. Social Security certainly isn't going to go up 40%. I simply do not understand why this is not treated as a legal breach of contract. Another case of Massachusetts failing to protect consumers and the elderly against predatory business practices.

By NOT allowing individuals to cancel the policy during open enrollment, via online enrollment sites (like Benetrac), and forcing subscribers to "call" Unum (so no documentation exists) - you're trying to scam individuals into not being able to cancel their policies. I'm cancelling because the customer service was DIFFICULT at best - making it extremely hard to file a 'valid' claim - this is NOT an insurance company I want to deal with on ANY policy. AIG, State Farm & Amica are all SUPERIOR at customer service, therefore, they will get my life insurance, accident insurance and anything else I can eliminate from Unum. Sad Company...

I bought Unum short-term disability insurance through my company 2 years ago. I needed my breast implants removed due to capsular contraction/scar formation (which is eligible for insurance coverage). After my application was processed, I went online to see that my case has been closed with a $6000 benefit, I was on disability for a total of 6 weeks with a 14-day eligibility period. I called to ask when the benefits will be mailed. The agent stated, yes, I qualified for benefits but no $ will be issued to me. They are 'actually managing my disability leave with my company'. How can a monetary amount be assigned to my case and no $ sent to me?

If they really assisted with managing my disability leave with my company, I was being paid by my own company with my OWN SICK DAYS. My 110 hour sick time ran out, despite my 220 hours of PTO, I only got paid 4 weeks of pay, I received NO paycheck by weeks 5 and 6. This caused my mortgage payment to be short, I was penalized, in addition to my $600 worth of NSF nonsufficient fund fees at $30 per transaction on all my autobill pays due the rest of my sick days.

To say that they're not sending me my benefits due to them managing my disability is plain BOGUS. Where's my benefits? That could have easily gotten me out of this financial mess! That was Unum's selling point! That they are in business to 'take care of what matters most' when you are disabled. Unum, just close shop! This company is run by crooks! I am due to renew my insurance plans next month and I will cancel my coverage with them. Their business is a joke! People need to know not to waste their hard earned money with them.

I have been a long time customer of Unum Life Insurance. I purchased a term life insurance policy when I left my employer in 2001. It started out as a 57K Life insurance policy, and the rates have gone up exponentially every 5 years. This year because I am turning 65 my rates went up $350.00. When I turn 70 my benefits are cut in half. What kind of business is this? That forces people to pay an enormous amount for life insurance and then turns around and cuts your benefits in half. I wish I had stock in this company or was a CEO, I would be a millionaire. Don't get sucked into their life insurance policies - not worth it in the long run.

After having hand surgery I applied for my temporary disability. After doing all the work for them in order to activate my claim, UNUM strung me out for 7 weeks saying they were processing my claim, they then took 2 more weeks reviewing my claim to verify if I was even eligible. Then they denied my claim saying it was a preexisting condition. Even my ortho specialist didn't consider it pre-existing. The customer service with UNUM was nonexistent. This is the WORST insurance company I have ever dealt with and they should be put out of business. They are comparable to white collar domestic terrorists.

I found out that I needed a spinal surgery and the company I worked for was playing around deciding whether or not I had short term disability even though I was paying for it and had been with the company long enough under the handbook guidelines. I called Unum and they swore I had coverage and wouldn't lose my coverage even if I got fired for having the surgery. So I had the surgery, and while I was laying in the hospital bed, the company I worked for fired me and Unum called me to say I wasn't going to be covered because I had a pre-existing condition. I had asked them that question specifically in my many phone calls to them leading up to the surgery and they denied having a pre-existing clause but apparently that was a lie.

A word to the wise, never buy insurance from Unum. They do not do anything but collect your premium and squirrel it away. They consider anything you've seen a dr for in the last six months, a pre-existing condition, so in other words, nothing is going to be covered... let me repeat myself, nothing is going to be covered under their antiquated rules. You might as well bury some money in a Mason jar in your backyard each week rather than give it to these sacks of dog poo! Stay away from Unum!!!

My last hospitalization was years ago and that was because of a bad gall bladder. For 4 month UNUM has stalled and given both us and our dentist the run around. They referred us to this dentist as being in network and confirmed our coverage before procedure but have "lost", "never received" "lost again" info they requested. Our dentist office has literally pages or notes on the runaround they have given her. We even scheduled a conference call between UNUM the dental office and ourselves and were assured they had everything and a month later still nothing. When we called was told it had just sat for another month but they would get it done. 2 weeks later still nothing. Now we have been placed for collection and are turning it over to our attorney because now they have damaged our credit as well. Dental office turning them over to the state of Georgia. Never have had service this bad. Whatever it takes our company will not be using ANY of their insurance service next year. After reading reviews, seems this is a company wide practice.

I suffered brain damage and a "failed back" (pain despite 2 surgeries) and am disabled. My job was being an emergency physician. I can't do that with brain damage. Unum put me "on claim" without hesitation and is sending me payments very regularly. I would like them to direct deposit, and they won't do that, which is annoying and I took off one star for it. I read some of the other reviews, and honestly, as board-certified MD with 38 years of experience, many of these people are whining that their claim was denied, and then they identify their problems in their complaint, and they are truly and honestly NOT disabled, and I can see why Unum denied them, and I think Unum was right.

When dealing with Unum get an attorney pronto. They will try every trick in the book not to pay you. Other people I know who have dealt with them have experienced their special brand of "customer service". You have a legitimate claim. You have paid the premiums for years and they still try to deny, deny, deny. I spoke with a Dr today that said she has to word a claim "just so" or it will be denied. How these people sleep at night I don't know. I couldn't believe the review here that said an Unum rep will call them every week and ask them if they are watching TV? WTH. How dare you, Unum. Pay your bills. And shame on the company you work for-- for not doing their research and hiring a reputable company.

Unum yet again has wrongfully deprived another sick/injured person of their disability insurance. I have 3 specialist physicians ALL stating my need for disability and yet Unum has wrongfully denied this based on their part time primary care doctors evaluation. On top of this, there have been 3 employees including a supervisor and contracted physician that have blatantly lied (on a recorded line) about physicians letters claiming my ability to return to work when in fact none exist. The contracted physician created a written statement claiming that one of my specialist physicians stated that "pt is ready to return to occupation at full time." This never happened and infuriated my physician so much that he wrote a strongly worded letter back to Unum and the contracted physician correcting their lies. In my opinion, never trust anything an Unum employee tells you and NEVER pay for any services that Unum has to offer.
