Can I rate it less than 1 star? I signed up for a whole life policy through an employer where I had automatic paycheck deductions. When I left the employer, I got no notice from Unum on what to do. I also forgot about it. About 18 months after I left, I found a statement which led me to call them Where an employee told me they did not contact me about making payments on the policy, but they should’ve and there’s nothing I can do about it now. Frustrated, I left it there. I filed a complaint with the Alabama Insurance Commission and Better Business Bureau. A couple years later, I called back, where they denied what that rep had told me, but also would not allow access to that recorded phone call.
They also said they mailed a letter out to my parents' house where I regularly checked my mail, but it never came. Doing that call, they kept saying there’s nothing they can do and they will do what they can to help me, but they can’t do anything. I complained to the Alabama insurance commission again and their responses they follow their policies so there’s nothing that they can do. Did they make it safely? Unum gaslit me and denied what their representative told me in 2014 but then also refuse to provide the recorded phone calls that would prove what I was saying. Their response was the same in 2024. They have your money and they’ll eat your time as you try to get it back because they got what they want and the regulatory agencies in Alabama judge them by the word of policy, not the practice.

I was NEVER provided the benefits specifications and what my particular insurance covered vs not… I gave notice 6 WEEKS prior to going out on voluntary surgery that I would be… after many back and forth MEAN (the specialists speak down to you like you are scum of the earth just looking to rob from them) conversations with claims and appeals and finally supervisor, I was told that the “disability had to happen before they can request info from your Dr to determine “PRE-EXISTING”! How does that make sense! I could have cancelled my surgery date for a later time when it WOULDN’T have been considered pre-existing, but they did not TELL ME that it could be or that they needed the “disability date to happen” BEFORE going out on leave.
I was denied 7 WEEKS AFTER I had already had the surgery, as it was deemed “pre-existing” because at an appointment 3 months before, I had TALKED to my doctor about the surgery! So now I can not pay my mortgage and can lose my house because they couldn’t tell me in the 6 weeks PRIOR when I could have STOPPED the surgery that it would fall under the pre-existing guidelines and would be denied. Literally withheld that information from me all just so they wouldn’t have to pay me anything at all!
Make sure you get all the fine print in writing if you are going to deal with UNUM because they do not care about humans and the customer service is disgusting! I have never felt so belittled! The manager Craig ** literally sighed at me, and Teresa was screaming at me and talking over me and took forever to respond after I asked her to let me talk, I had to ask if she was still there… probably had me on mute and put down the phone, like I am an idiot and not worth HER JOB!

Customer service is horrible. My agent is always out of the office and when she is in the office she NEVER returns my calls. It takes a prayer to heaven to speak to someone and you never speak to the same person. I have been trying to get a payment for 3 weeks. All of this is while I am dealing with a significant amount of pain. If I could I would give O for experience. This benefit is through my job which means I have to pay a portion. It is not free!!!

I have been on LTD now for 10-12yrs. My issues are chronic with no change, chronic pain including 4 spinal fusions and multiple autoimmune diseases. I Have had multiple additional diagnoses and last eval was borderline harassment, went months over the normal evals I’ve had for years and a definite HIPPA Violation. 5 months later. I’m getting eval’d again, and I only found out because I called to request a copy of my policy. I guess the need for information prompts a 5 month eval, because I got the letter the same day I asked for a copy of my policy. My doctors don’t even want to work with them. I don’t know how differently they need the same things explained to them every year, but it’s just ridiculous.
Since my last eval ended just 5 months ago, I have still been so literally sick to my stomach with what they did to me during that eval…that I literally just requested a copy of my policy today because I’m doing some research. After 5 months, I’m still investigating if what they did to me was even legal. I was gaslit and lied to in order for them to speak to doctors they have no right speaking to. I have doctors that insist they will not deal with UNUM on claims. However, they are more than happy to send office notes. Dr’s don’t need to be harassed, you can plainly see in the records everything you need to know. I have been disabled by UNUM and SSDI for years and all of a sudden… UNUM needs to start becoming difficult?
Then they claim you need to be followed by a specialist for every condition. No you don’t. You need to be followed regularly by a doctor or doctors. A lot of specialties do testing, repairs or treatments yes… But after years of chronic issues and no changes, you tend to end up with your most crucial care team and they can handle almost all your issues unless something new pops up or if anything changes. I see a rheumatologist, cardiologist, pain management and PCP regularly. I no longer have to see every specialist I’ve ever gone to.
It’s rubbish - I have to live with things that are untreatable - I do everything I can to help all my issues (which I didn’t ask for or cause myself, every single issue I’ve had is caused by autoimmune disease) and they treat you and question you like they have never heard of you and you have never had this illness before. It’s like, you have 12 years of records in front of you seriously? I wish I didn’t have to deal with them anymore, but I need the money. However, this stress is almost not worth it.

Faxing all information and documents back and forth with paperwork and signed documents. Took over 3 weeks. Unum still didn't get them when hospital claimed they sent them. Finally went in personally and watching my Surgeon fill out paperwork for a out patient surgery. Unum still denied my ONE day that I was unable to work due to anesthesia. Horrible company, very unorganized and unprofessional. I can't imagine having a major surgery and having to go through all the miscommunication with this horrendous Company. Many people where I've worked also had issue with Unum on multiple occasions.

It's a shame that you cannot leave a review of less than one star. This company plans to not authorize claims. My care team cannot believe the amount of paperwork required by UNUM for simple short term disability claims.
2. The website is useless, it only allows you to upload information and download letters / documents from UNUM. There is NO WAY to communicate with the claims analyst via the website. It's a complete waste of time.
3. They pick random dates that do not align with your employer's policies. In my case my STD expires tomorrow, they give themselves the opportunity 5 days to review documentations, knowing that they will not get the documentation from the care team in time to meet that deadline.
If you do any research on UNUM you will find that they have horrible ratings. Reviews on boards talk about how their first answer is always NO, and very often future answers are also NO.

Despite my surgeon sending my certification requiring 3 months leave for open heart surgery, they only approved 4 weeks. I was required to submit records showing a change in care and need for an extension past each 4 weeks. My surgeon submitted a certification three times, included my entire record, two weeks before the deadline. They told me I didn’t provide records that I started rehab by the deadline. Rehab didn’t start until AFTER the deadline! It’s absurd that I was expected to resend records every few weeks, while recovering from a 9 hour major surgery, when my surgeon clearly stated I could not return to work for 12 weeks. Even when I sent the records, two weeks early, they didn’t review them & I was shorted pay. My reconstructed heart surgery, with complications, was less stressful than this. Absolutely horrible.

Horrible experience. They don’t process anything unless you call them yourself to tell them what should be done! They lied and said I was speaking to a Supervisor, which I requested. She was not a supervisor, just a claims specialist. She lied and told me forms were requested and they weren’t. I called to confirm with my provider and even the information they gave me about why they weren’t able to get the form was a lie. This is a headache. They don’t reach out when they need more info. You have to keep calling and waiting for a call back. They don’t seem to have a system that makes sense. If you know you need medical records to process a claim then why would you not request that first?? It’s backwards and it wastes people time. I’m very dissatisfied.

I normally don’t leave reviews, but I felt it was important to share my experience so others don’t waste their time and money like I did. I went to Specialist Madison expecting professional help and reliable service, but unfortunately, that was far from what I received. Not only did they fail to help me in any meaningful way, but they also based their entire assessment on the opinion of just one examiner — an individual who is not even accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or any other recognized authority. That’s not just unprofessional, it’s irresponsible. You can’t make serious decisions or give advice based on someone with no real credentials. The lack of proper vetting and the reliance on such a questionable source of information really shows how incompetent and careless this place is when it comes to handling serious matters. I trusted them with something important, and they completely dropped the ball.

I initially opted in direct deposit. A Check was mailed instead. After contacting Unum questioning the payment route, the check was canceled and direct deposit set up again. Once again, a check was issued. Unum took it upon themselves to cancel the second check. I didn't know until I went to Bank of America, their bank, to cash said check and was informed that a stop payment had been put on the check. Maybe just maybe, the third time is the charm. Geezzzeeee, this company has been in business far too long to be this incompetent.

Requesting to be sent documents directly so you can send to your provider? Don't bother, they won't. They repeatedly ask for the same things over and over. The website does not update even when you do provide documents. Just all around horrible. Don't expect to be approved for STD or LTD. They will eat up all of your time to process this claim with their 5 business days turnaround time for each instance.

Short term disability has been a nightmare. Communication is non-existent. And when they do speak with you they flat out lie. Took a month and me calling to find out they needed additional information and then they "mistakenly" closed my claim and it took 3 days and multiple calls to get it corrected back to pending. Then they stated they needed a specific test submitted and a week later a different agent said they needed something completely different. Meanwhile I have been 5 weeks without pay.

I’m very disappointed with my recent experience with UNUM. I was told by Agent Kimbirlie that documents from my employer were still pending, even though my employer confirmed they had submitted everything over a week ago. When I raised this issue, the agent was dismissive and unhelpful, making me feel ignored during an already stressful situation.
I’m currently going through a family emergency, and the last thing I should have to worry about is whether I’ll be paid in time to cover my bills. The lack of urgency, empathy, and clear communication has caused unnecessary financial and emotional strain. I expected better support from a company that handles disability and income protection. I hope UNUM improves their responsiveness and shows more compassion to people going through difficult times.

My experience with this company has to do with life insurance that my uncle bought through this company. You can't speak to the people that are reviewing your claim so you get information through customer service but I have been told different things depending on who answers my call, if they answer. Don't call after 3:30 CST because you will just stay on hold till they close at 4:30pm CST. I submitted everything that the letter told me would need to be submitted but now they are coming up with even more things that they need, it's just a way to prolong payment or else they would tell you everything in the beginning. So beware, they are awesome at taking payments but suck at making any kind of payment. And the statement that they will process your claim in 7 - 10 days is a flat out lie. At this point I doubt I will ever see a payment.

If I could give this company 0 stars I would. I recently had oral surgery and used up all my vacation days. There was a complication, and I need to go in for another surgery. Since I used most of my days for the first surgery, I was looking for options to cover the second surgery. I went to the website to find out information on exactly what the process is and how long. There were no drop downs to give you options of the type of vacation so it says you can either live chat or schedule a call. I chose live chat. A representative answered and immediately said she would transfer me to someone that could help me.
I waited 15 minutes and no one answered even though it said I was #1 in line. So, I back out and then chose to schedule a phone call. All options for any phone call on any day were greyed out. So, even though this is a garbage company, I would like to thank them for being lazy and not wasting my time like others I see here. Dodged that bullet!

I purchased a Unum policy through my employer, opting for quarterly paper billing. There are only a few companies I trust to use electronic billing and I never allow any company to auto-charge my credit card, or auto-debit my checking account--that's like handing your wallet to a near-stranger and trusting them to only take out the money you said they could have. I certainly don't trust Unum.
Yesterday, March 15, 2025, my March invoice arrived in the mail. The due date for my payment was March 13, 2025 so by the time my statement arrived, my payment was already two days late, thanks to Unum's inability to mail an invoice on time. To ensure no lapse in my policy, I had to use their crummy website (instead of my online banking website) to make a one-time payment.
I looked on Unum's dumpster fire of a website for a place to contact them so I could file a complaint about their untimely billing. Unfortunately, like many terrible companies, Unum's website uses only pre-fab dropdown categories which, of course, are designed to limit inquiries to the issues Unum wants to address--not the issues their policyholders want to raise. To make matters worse, upon logging in to Unum's website, I was auto-directed to a page on which I would be forced to agree to electronic billing in order to use the website at all. When I declined, I got a pop-up basically saying "if you don't agree to electronic billing, go away and don't ever come back because now, you can't use our website for anything at all".
If you want a good laugh, Google "Unum reviews" (which is how I got to this website). Not surprisingly, the reviews on Unum's website--there are exactly four--are all glowing, 5-star commentaries. All four reviews are undated and list only a first-name. Presumably, they were written by Unum's marketing team. There's a "Review all testimonials" button. When I clicked it, only the same four reviews appeared, so presumably, these four reviews are the only ones Unum wants anyone to see. And, there is no place for a consumer to actually write a new review so I'm wondering how the four reviewers--"Desiree", "Jineen", "Dale" and "Bob"--were able to post their comments. Again, these "reviews" smack of having been internally created by one of Unum's paid toadies.
In short, this company goes out of its way to provide zero customer service and to avoid, deflect or ignore policyholder complaints. I only hope that when my survivors have to actually cash in my policy, they won't have to file a Department of Insurance complaint in order to get paid. This company sucks. If you've not already purchased a policy from them, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the company I work for (Amway) uses Unum. I had to have shoulder surgery and Unum has been nothing more than a headache. The website is trash, IF you can get ahold of a human they are extraordinarily rude and useless, the payments are not deposited on time (if you actually get paid), and they think they can dictate when you are fit for duty. If that were to happen, I lose my job! Good Luck trying to contact them & speak to a human. Thank God I went to my Dr.'s office on a Friday. Otherwise I would have lost 3 days of their deadline. My husband has been out on disability since October, and we’ve been facing one problem after another. At first, we were given the runaround regarding his paperwork, and now, despite finally getting approval, we are still dealing with complications related to his payment. We’ve called multiple times and have been told there is no direct deposit on file, even though we have an email confirming it was set up correctly.
We called back and were instructed to have a check sent instead, but that check was then canceled. We were told payment would be released on January 15th, but that did not happen. We called again on January 21st, and as of today, the payment still has not been released. This has been an incredibly frustrating experience, and it’s deeply concerning that my husband’s financial support during such a difficult time is being delayed like this. I believe this company’s practices are unacceptable, and I strongly urge others to reconsider doing business with a company that treats its customers this way.

(For a month) I'm not Tech savvy so I'm not using the portal, they text me every day to call them because I stuff to be done.
I have to call them right before surgery and right after surgery and I don't know why! They definitely add a ton of hoops and checkboxes you have to check and jump or you don’t get your benefit and can get fired from your company for missing time. I started my claim for FMLA and short term disability on OCT 21st. I have had to call no less than once a week, as my claim would show no change. 3 weeks in I had submitted everything they kept posting about needing more info, exactly at the 5 day point. The letter was the most none explanatory, useless junk. After 3 more calls that week I finally got someone with some sense. She explained what they needed was a term for section 2 included on line 4 and line 5. Seriously 3 calls to tell me that. I personally uploaded the documents and they claimed they never got it 2 times.
I have not once in all this time, talked to my "dedicated claims manager". I even had them put in a call back request to her, almost a week ago and nada. Me and my surgeon followed their instructions to the very finest detail, we submitted the medical certificate and return to work form THREE TIMES because every time it would show as not received. Trying to get a hold of a representative is nearly impossible, I’ve learned I have to scream REPRESENTATIVE to even get passed the automated message options. Each time I’ve called (five times now) I’ve had conflicting and confusing information. The 1st to confirm they received my documents, however they said they needed additional information and proceeded to ask me the information already on the forms and said I’d receive an approval letter within 5 days.
A week later nothing, so I call and the representative stated that they actually can’t process my claim until it’s working 3 business days before my last day working and to verify last day on the 27th. Did that, receive a text this morning stating they can’t process my claim without needed additional info, and directed me to a link where it asked the SAME questions I’ve verified twice now. Then I get a text saying they can’t process. So I call, speak to a representative, who actually had the NERVE to tell me they won’t process it until I call in after the surgery, and the day after. I even clarified “you are telling me I have to call post op when I’m loopy to verify I had it, and then the next day to verify the verify when I should be HEALING”.
Anyways I asked to speak to a manager, and then was told I had a case advisor for the first time ever. She stated that info is wrong and that she will contact my doctors and company to verify. I still don’t trust it at all. They make dealing with health issues so much harder and stressful.

I recently was contacted by my employer who stated that Unum made a comment regarding my case adding “failure to provide proof of loss” to my claim & denied & closed my claim. I find that rather odd because I have the “proof” in hand that I did send Unum enough medical records if not all of them throughout the entire year & I have the dates in which Unum received these records. At a recent office visit with my primary care physician she stated that Unum contacted her & asked “why is she taking this medication & for what reason” the medications I take are no one’s business except mine & the physician that prescribed them. At this point, I have lost practically everything. If it wasn’t for the support of my mother who knows where I would be today. I don’t even have a phone to use to contact anyone because I simply have no income to pay for it. I recently emailed my employer about Unum.
I informed my employer that Unum is indeed a scam. I recommend you all look into the Unum Scandal. Unum has denied legitimate disability claims to thousands of people in the past & I sincerely believe that is what is happening again because looking at my claim & the amount of proof & notes provided by my doctors to Unum I am still being denied. Something shady is indeed happening within that company. Unum needs to be investigated & that is exactly my next step. I will be contacting a higher authority source to investigate this matter. I recently looked over my case managers paperwork that was sent to me. It was for me to sign & fill out to release medical records to Unum from November 01st of 2023-present. In November of 2023 I was not ill with my condition, yet. I also did not have Unum as my insurance nor did I work for the employer that provided Unum as a STD & LTD insurance.
I ask why must Unum require my past medical records from before I had them as my insurance. I have come to a conclusion to that question and it is simply because they are seeking to find any little detail to deny my claim. Now, I am being called a liar by Unum & now Unum is contacting my employer attempting to make them believe this nonsense of a lie made by Unum to potentially get me terminated from my Job. I have sent my employer the screenshots of the dates, records, phone calls, & everything possible I have to my advantage to prove I am telling the truth & that this company is a scam. I am obviously not alone as many honest individuals have commented on their experiences with Unum. It is one thing after another with Unum. Save every little detail that you can because I promise if you attempt to work with these people you will need it for your advantage in the end.

I got on the phone to speak with Unum after looking at my life insurance policy from 2014 for my daughter. I bought it because I was told by my financial advisor it may be the only insurance I’m able to get on my daughter who has a genetic disorder, and I got it through my registered nurse position. I was holding my amortization schedule for her policy and saw the cash value after 10 years was less than $500. I wanted Unum to explain why I put over $1500 in and have nothing as to cash value. I was informed that I don’t even have any cash value after 10 years. I spoke with a rep at Unum and told her I was here holding the schedule off amortization from Unum in my hands, she said she had no record of it, she could not give me an answer as to when the policy would create cash value.
I am so upset with this company, as to one - I will probably die before my payments of 120 years are complete for my daughter and I build little to no cash value ever. This is incredibly devious on the part of Unum. It is strictly a death policy. Had I known this I would’ve never contributed the $1500 I have so far. Is it because she’s disabled and they know that her odds of dying are greater than the average child? I don’t know but it seems they have changed the terms of her insurance unbeknownst to me. It’s almost like Las Vegas. The house always wins. Be proud of yourself Unum. Congratulations! With no respect. Helen, the **, RN.

I have six surgeons and a primary doctor in rehabilitation and it gave me a brain Concussion.. bipolar and depression. Unum has cut off my disability. His name is Kenneth. In the letter that says why they cut me off.. He said that he called my surgeons at Vanderbilt University... He said that three of them told him over the phone, that there were no restrictions that I could work, so he cut my disability off... I don't know why he lied, but there is no way. Vanderbilt University is giving out any medical information over the phone.
We're gonna demand his resignation and that they reinstate my disability immediately, they're a multi billion dollar company, and I paid my insurance if they don't, I'm going to sue. I would give this company a zero but the option is not there. Been trying to work with Unum to renew my FMLA (that I've had for 7 years and just trying to update for the upcoming year) this new process was so frustrating to my PCP and myself as nothing was enough I had just given up. After 1.5 months I messaged them (because speaking to a human is almost impossible) to just close out my request. Two weeks later I am now being told that the process cannot be cancelled or closed because I hadn't reported my days off yet. I had never been told that my FMLA was approved so I forced myself to work through my chronic illness and hadn't taken time off.
The process needs streamlining and needs to be black and white, tell people yes or no. Read the messages submitted and update or correct the system for all customer service personnel to see. No one there can ever answer a question, they take a message and tell you someone will call you back that day and the call never happens. I have cancelled all benefits available to me that are managed by Unum as I refuse to deal with them any further. As far as them not closing my request that's been in process for now just under 2 months, oh well too bad, they can figure it out themselves.

When asked to speak to her manager, you are told from one person it is a man then you are told from another person it is a woman. I don't think one manager can be a man and woman at the same time, but maybe they can these days. I literally had to walk away from my position because of lisa and this company because they were poor in managing my claim. I could not be sick for always having to do lisa's job. It was insane. I enrolled in UNUM voluntary insurance and the coverage information included eye injuries and surgery. On 11/30/2023 I had surgery for a detached retina and a Giant Retinal Tear. The doctors injected silicone oil into my eye for recovery purposes. On 2/8/2024, I had a second surgery to remove the oil. I submitted a claim for an accident due to the detachment, however, I could not say exactly how my retina became detached and torn. It usually involves head trauma, but again, I could not pin point the exact incident because detachments/tears can be slow to evolve.
I told my doctor this and I was honest on my claim. It was denied because UNUM said that a detached retina is an illness, not an accident. I filed a different claim for my retina surgeries with the illness form and that claim was denied, stating retinal detachment is not an illness. Again, my coverage includes eye injuries ($300) and surgeries ($1000). It seems UNUM is finding creative ways to not provide coverage that I have been paying for the past year.

Like others if I could give negative rating I would. These people treat you horribly when you ask them questions. They never actually answer the questions that are asked especially when it comes to the fact that it seems they have lost my medical records. Then they gaslight you to make you think you are absolutely crazy. They blame you the customer for them not having everything even when you have proof that the information requested has been sent. They also tell you to upload records on their app, however some records wouldn’t upload cause they were too big to upload. I’ve had claims specialists actually tell me they could be working on claims but instead they are having to deal with my phone calls when they already answered my questions, in which they never answered my question.
For all I know some stranger down the street could be reading my medical records. They claim they don’t have my records however other people confirmed my records were there previously. The so called “director” who called me back when I made a complaint wasn’t any better. I had the whole conversation on speaker and my husband finally heard how they spoke to me. He was appalled by how even the “director” spoke to me. They tell you all the time they need your records and it’s your responsibility to get them there. However when you tell them that you have sent them they argue with you that they aren’t there. They even blame the customer for not giving updates on doctors who are treating you when you prove that you have called but THEIR staff won’t take the information and just keep referring you to a previous letter. Every time you try to call to get information and confirm you’re doing things right you get different information.
If you are able to have another disability insurance I would. This has been the worst experience I’ve ever encountered. I’ve even asked them if it’s a requirement to be hired to treat customers like this. It’s awful. Only reason why I had to deal with them is because this is who my employer uses. I was put on leave status from my job due to an injury, which later required surgery. My h.r. rep told me to file my paperwork with Unum for my short-term disability, and I wasn't paid until a week after I had my surgery (a span of almost 3 1/2 months!).
They sent me a lump sum & pay was coming in but was abruptly stopped after 2/12 months, and I was told that I have to fill out more paperwork for my long-term claim! Yes, folks...short term doesn't roll over into long-term like most other insurances do, so it was as if I was starting from scratch, despite the fact that the doctor who performed my surgery & the doctors overseeing my physical therapy already sent them paperwork on my status. Usually, a doctor's word is bond in disability cases; Once the doctor says "Yea" that's all it takes. Not with Unum. They have to "review" both my paperwork & what the doctors have already stated.
My condition was good enough to get short-term disability but not for long term?? Oh, it gets better, their review process takes upwards of 4 to 6 weeks for approval (if they approve it), so I'm sitting & rehabbing from surgery with no money coming in. In fact, I've had to take out a loan against my 401(k) to keep my account from drying up! I have voiced my displeasure with Unum's customer service department to no avail. Even more galling is that the claims & records supervisor at the clinic where my surgery was done even said that THEY can't stand dealing with Unum! She even told me, "Baby, you are not the first person clowning about Unum & probably won't be the last. I've had to get on them for their rude treatment of my staff." Folks, if that doesn't speak volumes, what does?!!
If you are a prospective client (including employer) and you're looking at Unum for your disability services, do yourself (and employees, if applicable) a huge favor: DON'T! If you're a current customer like myself, drop them like they're hot rocks! Once my ordeal is over, I'm going to Aflac. If I decide to stay with my current employer, I'm telling them to discontinue my enrollment with Unum & I'll get Aflac or someone else that's better. I've heard far more positive about Aflac (and my former disability folks, Aetna) than Unum will ever have! The records & claims supervisor I mentioned earlier said that unless Unum changes their ways, they're gonna lose customers to the point where they may have to file bankruptcy or go out of business. As a current/soon-to-be-ex customer, I can't wait for that day to come, because I don't want anyone else to go through the bull---- I've had to deal with!

It is no kind of fun to submit a medical leave, go through major surgery, and spend the recovery time calling Unum repeatedly to get nowhere! My claim was submitted on February 8th, but nothing has been approved or paid since. Every time I call we start with that they need more forms/paperwork and end with they do not need anything and have no idea why nothing has been approved. The call usually ends in my tears out of frustration. They have the worst reviews I have ever seen in my life. How can this company get away with this behavior? You are dealing with people who have just gone through some serious medical procedures and you can't answer the simplest of questions let alone get people paid. I have now turned this over to my benefits team in hopes that can be a catalyst for some sort of action.

I first started having issues with FMLA intermittent leave when I started a new claim for intermittent leave. I had already been off a few weeks for FMLA prior to that. My doctor submitted all paperwork, and they requested information 3 more times. The letter stating what was needed were obviously already answered i.e. doctor's signature, time needed, fax number, etc. After 2 months of trying to get it approved and finally getting connected to a claim specialist only because I used HR, they stated I didn't need a new claim (B) because I had already been off earlier in the year for the same condition. Claim (A) was closed, and paperwork was shown as linked to claim (B) and days approved. Upon looking at the Unum website, I noticed all communications and records regarding claim (A) were no longer accessible to me, but I had printed some of the communication.
A month and a half later I was contacted by my manager stating he was instructed to write me up for 2 days. The 2 days were ones I had submitted intermittent hours for through their app. HR once again got involved, Unum stated they did not show absences reported, I sent screenshots proving I had submitted them. A claim specialist inputted the hours manually, but stated I needed to get intermittent FMLA paperwork filled out by my Dr. This was less than 2 months from when paperwork was originally requested and finally stated as sufficient. Repeat calls were not returned with HR involved including being directed to use numbers that were out of service by the claim specialist by email. I explained that the paperwork was already there and even showed on the app. They requested it again stating they didn't have anything.
After asking HR and a specialist together on a video call why I had to supply the same document again in less than 3 months when my condition had not changed, HR sent a copy of the original intermittent FMLA form. It was again approved as it was and the hours covered. They did not address any concerns with inconsistencies or issues with the app. Now another month later, not being able to rely on the app, I had to wait until I had access to a work computer when I returned a week later.
Unum has now denied those days they are stating as insufficient notice. HR was able to find paperwork that stated must report within 2 days for intermittent not the normal 7, but requested they reconsider due to my doubts with the reliability of the app. They responded that they would not approve them, they were not aware of any issues with the app, and they show where I had accessed the account 3 times when the absences was reported. Obviously, I accessed the account when I reported: on the work computer when I returned. I am still dealing with that portion now.

My husband needed to go on disability and his company was in middle of changing policies with Unum. We had to wait 2 months before ever receiving a determination of whether he would be under the "old" or "new" policy. He ended up having to be considered on the "old policy" and therefore we were denied the better "new" policy. If we had received a more timely response, we could have made different choices regarding his disability and he could have met the requirements of the "new" policy. But because it took them 2 months to answer, it was too late at that point. His company's Human Resources could not get an answer either.
It was also over 2 months before any payment was received at all for his short term disability. We had questions before he needed to go back to the Dr for re-evaluation. Of course, those questions weren't answered either until after the Dr's visit and it was too late. No email address was available just an 800 number where you would leave a message. It is a lot of stress when someone has a medical situation needing disability and then have the added stress of trying to get a response from an insurance company and a financial burden as well. Bottom Line: DO NOT Recommend UNUM for Short Term Disability Insurance.

This company is beyond horrible. My job switched to them half way through the year and I was already on FMLA. They required all new paperwork from my doctor and then did start my FMLA until they did their work on their end almost a month after I got the paperwork from my doctor to them. Then they do a 6 month review of your FMLA that they don't tell you you must request the paperwork sent to your doctor and then without contact to you or even a letter to you will close your FMLA at 6 months because you didn't request to have your FMLA that's good for a year reviewed by their company at 6 months. And it's impossible to speak to the "person" who is my case worker even though countless messages have been left to be called back.
And even after I did request the 6 month extension of my FMLA that is by law good for a year it still 2 weeks later has not been done and I have no FMLA because the company Unum has not done what is their actual job so my job is in trouble because at 6 months into my 1 year FMLA Unum has yet to send my doctor who is very willing to fill it out and send it back saying I still require FMLA. Worse customer service. They can't even do their job at managing the FMLA which you have to protect your job even though you and your doctor do everything possible to be sure you have it. The 1 star percentage makes total sense. Unum is by far the worst company experience I have ever had to deal with in my life. Please find out if your company or a company that you may start working for is associated with Unum. If they are, RUN!!!! These people deny others who are extremely sick or injured and in need of approval for their disability claims, but all Unum does is cause more problems for the person in need. They will lie to you about not receiving Medical Certification Forms, and their decisions on denial go completely against medical science. Everything you need to know about this company can be found online if you do the deep digging.
They have been found guilty of fraud and wrongfully denying claims multiple times, and law offices around the country have separate pages on their websites for how to deal with Unum. My guess is that companies are sold on Unum based on their annual revenue and the fact that they've been around since before the Civil War. When you bring in $10 billion annually, maybe start paying some of that out to people who really need it. Your reviews wouldn't look this bad. More investigations need to be opened.

Unum expected me to come back to work with all my incisions still healing, taking Tylenol for pain, fatigued, and suffering from memory loss. Not to mention, over-riding my medical doctor. After chatting with some coworkers, I found out they did this to several other people who had medical related disabilities. I have only had this company for a few years. The bank I was working at had Unum as their disability provider. I was in a horrific motorcycle accident where I was in a coma for 2 weeks, in the hospital for 2 months and am still trying to get better. I will never be the same. Unum paid the benefit while I had to learn how to walk again. In the meantime my bank got Guardian and dropped Unum. (Now I know why) Guardian did all the paperwork for me to get on social security disability. Wonderful company who cares about their clients. I got on disability and Unum immediately sent out a letter that they wanted to be paid back. I paid them back the money I was paid by ss. So now they pay me less than $600 a month and have ruthlessly been trying to collect information from my doctors looking for one little reason not to pay me. They have done this to me several times.
No one wants to be on disability or on social security. Especially not me. I have a lot of pride and I'm a hard worker and I'd never asked to be. In this position. companies pay the insurance so that their employees will have peace of mind. God forbid anything like this happens to them. The last thing anyone needs is to be harassed by a company looking for some reason that they don't have to pay you when you're already going through so much mentally physically emotionally. This company Unum has absolutely no Decency or concern whatsoever for their clients. All they care about is that they don't want to pay you what the benefit was. Recently they sent me this fitness for duty form.
Where I filled it out my doctor filled it out and sent it back. As soon as they got that, they wanted my medical records from my doctor and made me sign a release for them again. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to be in a position that I am in having a paralyzed but rods in my back. And in my ribs and have this company harass me the way they are. If there is anyone out there that reads this that can help me do something about this. I would so appreciate it. The new company that my bank got helped me with social security. But they couldn't help pay the benefit of course, because I had already been. Let go of from my job because my injuries were so bad. If you're a company, don't do this to your employees, please I beg you do not get Unum for them. Guardian was wonderful looking to them.

I live in CA and draw $2,000.00 a month for my short term disability related to my shoulder surgery. I don’t mind being bothered with weekly emails for $2,000.00 but not for $39.00. I also told her I’m not electing for short term disability insurance during our open enrollment for 2024. The money got deposited a few days later. I am still out the overdraft fees which is infuriating but I'm trying to enjoy time with my baby so I let it go. Well then they are handling my hospital pay claim for me being admitted. I signed up for direct deposit the moment the claim was approved but they told me too late we already wrote you a check. I waited 6 days for it to arrive in the mail. I deposited it in my account and my bank now says the funds are not available so they pulled it back out of my account. Part of the money has already been spent so MORE overdraft fees will hit my account.
I called Unum explaining my bank said the check is not registered to their PPM account making it impossible to cash. They said it has been cashed and they are sending me a certified letter in the mail. I am supposed to be enjoying time with my baby before returning to work. Instead my checking account is going into the negatives for a second time and I cannot get anywhere with unum to get help. Reading their other reviews of so many people not getting paid while at their lowest on disability makes me sad. At least I could enjoy 7wks with my baby before this mess started. Updated my direct deposit information, they don't inform you when it's complete, no email notification, no app notification. Just nothing! I did another deposit information form not remembering which bank I used and I called a few days later to see if either one was accepted and the lady told me my previous one been accepted but since I did a new one it was pending so they kicked out the first one, so my paper check was sent.
The system communication could be better, people are trying to recover and are sick, it's sad when you can't fully recover because you have to contact a company who seem to not really care about the customer, you have a system that needs some updates. Knowing that deposit information is pending, rejected, or approved would be nice for future references especially for customers in worse situations, it would make the process a bit easier and would eliminate some call traffic. Just overall highly wouldn't recommend and I think I'll just pay that extra money outta pocket for Aflac, seem like my job went with the cheapest disability company solution. My wife took a disability policy out thru her employer from Unum 12 years ago. Premiums always deducted from her paycheck - so there was never a missed payment. Last year, my wife became incapacitated from several unexpected surgeries. Well, this is when the games begin… We submitted every single document required, confirmed it with the representative from Unum and then waited. Weeks. Weeks turned into months - then - we receive a check. $7.00. Yes, SEVEN DOLLARS a week. What they do is essentially lie about the policy when you take it out, saying “they’ll pay you up to $1,000.00 a week while you’re incapacitated.” Lie.
After getting an attorney involved, we receive a phone call from Unum stating we had been underpaid. Unum now sends a check for $6500.00 to us, of which they’re now demanding to be returned because they’re saying “it was an overpayment.” DO YOU SEE A PATTERN YET? It gets better… My wife while out on temporary disability, gets a phone call from a very smooth talker from Unum which will be named later in court - and he says, “Madam, we are going to pay you 40% of your gross salary until aged 65, then our ASSOCIATE COMPANY BROWN AND BROWN will help transfer you to Social Security Disability, but that won’t happen until ages 65.” Ok, great - well - we never recd the 40%, that is what we were told - we IMMEDIATELY received calls from Brown and Brown, to get my wife on SS Disability so Unum won’t have to pay a dime.
Not only will Unum not pay, they’re still demanding a refund from when my wife was on TEMPORARY disability. This company is a shell game. They make unkept promises. DO NOT take out a Policy with Unum, go with someone different. Or better yet, fund it yourself in case of an emergency. This company will use EVERY excuse and will clearly pass you off to your State or Federal programs. You’ve been warned. When you refuse to allow them to do that, they will practice call avoidance and put you on mute so that you have no way to fill the satisfaction survey or request an escalation. Today I immediately called back to try to get a supervisor, only to never have one pick up. Tried to call again.... Got the after hours message.
Besides their "customer service" issues:

They then lied about it to say that 6 months was the maximum time anyone could have....- They will always, ALWAYS refuse documents and try to find some sort of "Gotcha!" moment, claiming there is information they are "missing".
- They can't keep ANYTHING straight. My paperwork has been filled out the exact same way two times now, and somehow they come to DIFFERENT conclusions about each.
- No matter how many times I tell them they will never receive permission to contact my doctor and have no legal right to do so, they continually insist and send my forms to fill out for it.

My case manager at UNUM has proven discourteous, deceptive, and shown a total lack of compassion for myself and my family. Her supervisor failed to resolve any of our complaints or further the status of our claim, so that I may receive the benefits I am entitled to. We have patiently waited for 8 months and have seen no progress made. As a result of UNUM’s poor business practices, I have personally suffered numerous falls, extreme financial hardships, and undue stress on myself, my wife, and my 2 daughters, who have been forced to serve as my caregivers.
My wife has recently suffered a stroke, which her doctor indicated was likely stress induced. I have been paying the premium for long-term healthcare insurance from UNUM Insurance for over 20 years. I continue to pay the premium with little hope of receiving the federally mandated benefits I am entitled to. Numerous physicians submitted substantial documentation to UNUM stating that I need assistance and am entitled to federally mandated benefits. Yet, no matter what we provide, UNUM demands more. They will eagerly collect your premium, but fail to pay your benefits.

My experience has been terrible. First they continually denied the claim every time I was off work for the same claim. I completed all the paperwork and obtained Doctor’s completed paperwork and given green light. On the next intermittent FMLA claim, they denied for a heart transplant and all paperwork states Kidney Transplant. (Incompetence in review process)
They acknowledged error and apologized and escalated for resolution. But yet, no resolution. I am in tears at this whole process in addition to being exhausted from medical stays with daughter. The only word in their vocabulary is Deny. My employer has been so great to work with thus far in assisting to resolve but I will encourage them to drop UNUM for another provider. I have been dealing with the nightmare of recovering from it since then. I am still home and just got off oxygen last week (yay.). I tried to claim on my Unums short-term disability plan a few days ago. I turned in everything they requested and got a response from them today.
Unum denied my claim because I didn't stay in the hospital 4 more days. My release papers said I was in the hospital for 10 days. I missed this company helping me because I didn't stay in the hospital long enough!?! Sooooo I should of asked the doctor to left me admitted there in the hospital longer? In my opinion, it would have taken a lawsuit to get a reversal and I simply was not willing to put myself through that stress. So, I canceled the policy. I had paid my premium on June 1st, and canceled the policy on June 8th. To add injury to insult, they have yet to refund me the pro-rated amount for the month of June (they owe me for 22 days that were paid for, before my cancelation), and we're now in the month of November. Despite protestations, they ignore me and send it again. Their substitution contains language about "critical illness/critically ill" as a determiner of benefits while my policy only requires that I be disabled in 2 or more ADL. I submitted all paperwork plus my DPA. They lost my DPA twice, needed Dr’s orders plus clinical notes twice. Set up Direct Deposit - still not getting correct payments. Her policy is to pay $1000 for 24 months. First payment in January was $560. When asked why, the Benefit Specialist said they didn’t know what licensing her Memory Care had so they were paying a lower rate. After 4 months they didn’t think about that?
About a week later, I received a call stating the full rate was approved. I asked what is the full rate and he reluctantly said $1000. I asked to confirm the length of time and he said, “I don’t have that information “. He calls back a week later and says yes, 24 months. I just got her check for January - it’s for $620. UNUM is a scam. The longer they avoid paying, the greater likelihood she will die and they can keep her benefit. I have never dealt with a more corrupt company. At first I just thought they were incompetent, but I have realized it is a time delay process for them. My mom would have been better off putting her money into a minimum yield investment vehicle. Unum is directly responsible for destroying me financially, EVERY payment I received was so late that it set me behind on my bills so bad I’m still trying to get caught back up, months later. Their delays have destroyed my credit scores, my car got repossessed twice because of Unum's late checks. Luckily my bank understood the situation after I told them about my surgeries and dealing with Unum.

I started paying for long term care insurance in 2007 thru my employer. Back then I think it was about $100 per month which covered me and my wife. Well about 6 years ago we got a price increase which amounted to doubling the monthly premium to $200 per month. When questioned they said this was a new insurance market for them and they were starting to realize higher costs now that some folks were using the benefits they paid for much like the current letter with excuses why the increase. Don’t they have actuarial people that know what they are doing? Of course cost will go up as the boomers start needing long term care.
Today 11/01/2020 I got another price increase notice which is another 52% increase to $ 400 per month. I am retired so these increase affect my monthly finances. They stated that because I had the inflation coverage option that is why I was getting the increase because their costs out of pocket are increasing because more people are now using what they paid for. With actuarial numbers they should have expected this kind of activity. This appears to me to be a bait (low ball starting price) and switch (get you hooked like a drug user and invested) so it becomes a more difficult decision to end it. I have over $30,000 invested in this program so it becomes more difficult to walk away from. Had I invested these monthly premiums in the stock market I would have around $100k so that may be a better option for all that are reading this and considering long term care insurance.
So at this rate I guess I can expect and increase (compounding) every three to five years of about 50 %? I see this as get “them hooked early with low rates,” keep increasing the rates until the insured gives up and forfeits all the money they have paid in or forfeit the inflation portion of the policy to not get the increase. Unfortunately my monthly payment without inflation clause would be $4000 to a nursing home which in today’s world averages about $7500 per month so the balance would eat up my hard earned savings over time should I last for a long time in a nursing home. That money needs to go to my kids not the nursing home which is why I bought the policy in the first place.
This company is very disreputable in my opinion. They should be investigated by the insurance bureau of New Jersey for these kinds of increases. They also should hire some professional actuaries so the projections would be more timely and realistic and rates would be more real world...but then they would be so high no one could afford them so this company would not be able to sell anything. See where I am going. I will call them tomorrow to voice my displeasure and find out what my options are. It is no fun being 74 years old. The way we are treated is a crime. Unum denied an employee's fmla because she couldn’t tell them how many days she would miss after chemo!!! We fought. Our employer had it reversed and approved. That’s just one example. If your employer uses them you don’t have a choice. But please don’t purchase on your own. I promise you’ll be sorry!!!!

My brother opened an insurance policy for his daughter when she was born. He was killed in a car wreck when she was 2 and I was listed on the policy as c/o on account. All thru the duration they would send statements and change of address forms for me to keep her address current in the file. When she turned 18 they had 5 different excuses as to why her money was not available. They are claiming the account is abandoned yet I have a letter confirming removal of block on account. These people are sleazy.

This company is horrible, from short term to long term claims, it has been a nightmare. I have just been informed that my long term claim is now closed. After a review of my claim, it has been determined that I could do something, anything for work. I paid on this policy through my employer. And now, I've been told by the Vice President, that they have been supporting me for the last two years. No, I paid in, I have supported myself. Please if you see Unum anywhere on your employer's benefits, research before making any decisions. I did call my former employer to give feedback too as well.

Costco sent me out on short term disability, which turned into long-term disability. I continued to pay the portion for my health insurance, and then Costco canceled it telling me I could get COBRA. Yes, we all know how cheap that insurance is! It would have taken half my disability payment to cover the insurance! Because I no longer have insurance, I could no longer afford to go see the doctor or get physical therapy! So because I was no longer seeing a physician, UNUM canceled my disability payments! It took having to sue them, but because of the clause that they have in the Costco policy… They can screw people left and right with no repercussions!

Start off by saying they only get a 1 star because no stars wasn't an option. Now to start off I've worked for my company for 4yrs. All the while I have always had long term benefits and thought I had short term as well however I guess my company never offered it. Fast forward to Nov 2018 I went to a doctor for upper back pain. UPPER BACK. Seen him in Dec of same year too for another check up for same issue. Meanwhile my doc sent me to get full scans of my entire back. Jan of 2019 my work offers Short Term which I elect to get. Go see doc again about the scans who then tells me I do have upper back issues and, "Oh by the way your lower back looks to have problems as well." I continued to tell the docs it's mainly my upper back and only seldom my lower. Now the docs decide my back needs operated on before my upper back issues can be taken care of.
Nov 2019 I finally decide to let them fix my lower back just so they would get over it and try to help me with my upper back. Have surgery, send all my papers to Unum only for them to deny my claim and say it's pre-existing because the doc listed lower back issues in Nov and Dec of 2018 and short term didn't start until Jan 2019. All the while I've always had long term. It's these types of greedy horrible shady companies that screw people over that has a wife and 4 kids to support but had to have surgery and had to be off work. So now, just 5 weeks post op I'll probably be going back to work 2 months early just so I can provide for my family. Thank You Unum. My family and I greatly appreciate your loyalty and understanding people's needs that's going thru the roughest time of their life.

In fact, a supervisor just lied to me claiming they haven't received the necessary medical records from the hospital to complete the claim. I then provided her with tracking information to show it was received. I also informed her that someone from her office called the hospital yesterday to get the password necessary to open the records provided on a CD. Furthermore, she couldn't even provide me with a proper timeline for resolution. What a completely WORTHLESS company. Nothing gets done unless you force them to do their job by babysitting them.

I have had a Unum Critical Care Policy for over 10 years. I obtained the policy because of my spouse’s family history Of multiple cancers. My husband developed non alcoholic SteatoHepatitis that has turned into cirrhosis. He is now in MAJOR ORGAN FAILURE OF THE LIVER which is one of the organs covered on the policy. His condition has rapidly declined and they are refusing payment because he is too sick for transplant.
In the information I received, the paperwork said proof of organ failure, such as UNOS listing for transplant or in the event of his death from organ failure. I told the representative he has been denied transplant. The representative said we need proof that he is in organ failure. Our Hepatologist sent that proof along with the reason for denial of transplant. Now they are saying they only pay claims when patient was listed for transplant or dies while on the transplant list. They said I have a right to appeal the decision. I’m waiting on a copy of my policy to see what I’m actually appealing. Appeals can be faxed but not emailed. There is no access to policy online. Request for emailed copy of policy will take 3 business days. Workers call back but don’t leave messages if you're working. Asking for a priority callback means waiting a week.
Starting my FMLA claim through unum was a nightmare. Turned firm because he wasn’t sick enough, only approved after he was hospitalized in ICU. Online policy says I have 300+ hours available of FMLA, when I called for another item they said my FMLA claim had expired 2 weeks prior. The company is very fortunate to have heartless, ruthless, creative employees that I’m sure save the company a lot of money. Reading the reviews here in addition to my own experiences, I think the critical care Policy is a complete waste of money. I am contacting my attorney. I hope that helps.

UNUM and it manipulated relationship with doctors. Doctors don't have is (Extra Time) to deal with UNUM. At a work event Smashed my shoulder, tore my Ligaments clear of my AC joint, completely floating, collarbone, broke loose at joint and pushing skin up an inch above my shoulder. ER offered no surgery/ repair option. Four surgeons offered no solution or option, including Mayo clinic in Rochester, Mn. My GP kept sending me to therapy and pain clinics.
After a year I gave up on a realistic repair to shoulder. The opportunity had passed. It seems if you're above a certain age, or not working in the occupation of heavy labor, they don’t offer a surgery option at the ER. I was just a revolving cash cow for UnityPoint hospitals and clinics..UNUM is vigorous demanding from updates from doctors. Then UNUM wiggled me off my life insurance policy stating I was not getting enough doctor updates and canceled the policy...then came the MORE Demands and more pressure on my doctors. Requiring excessive time filling out uniforms and answering phone calls. Then Unum hires the IME (independent medical examiner) to make a report, a report based on reading UNUM's excessive 1200 page patient report.
IME does a cheap bone Xray (not proper test to show tissue damage), and a physical exam that is tainted by UNUM's 1200 page opinion report.. The IME has a cut and paste exam procedure and overlooks obvious pain and restrictions. In fact IME blamed me of being over sensitive and faking my inabilities. In the IME’s report my hands looked excellent and had fine working motor skills. In reality, I refused to offer the doctor hand as my right index finger was lacerated the week before, still full of sutures. I was also accused of being overweight and not cooperating. It was obvious I was judged as a healthy person trying to abuse UNUM benefits.
Unum had stopped/throttled payments off and on before, pressuring me for more documentation from doctors. Then they denied coverage completely and stooped payments. My GP relationship was compromised and GP didn’t want to do any more UNUM paperwork. Now I wasting time and money. Lost job and no income for over a year... The stress was insane. Then I had a widowmaker heart attack! Fire department brought me back with a defibrillator.I decided to look into the UNUM appeal process and called a few disability insurance lawyers. Lawyers were to receive 40-60 percent of continued unum payments if they win appeal.Leftover payments Left me in federal poverty rate and unable to pay for medical insurance.
So I went through the UNUM 1200 pages myself and added discrepancies and bias situations and sent to file a UNUM appeal a few weeks ago.
At this point I just want the stress gone.
If by chance I win the appeal I still have to live with pain and dysfunctional shoulder.
I’ve completely lost trust in my GP, UNUM, and Doctors riding the shirt tails of insurance companies. I hope I live long enough to find help for others living this Hell..

Then they appoint their friends to Agencies like the Board of industrial appeals, and Washington state workers compensation Agency, or the Washington State Human Rights Commission - and in turn those appointed People in those agencies to keep their jobs are Paid to Deny all Claims, and wait for the injured to die, or have another Agency, Insurance Company, or Family Member pay the bills all the while the Responsible Government Employers, Pay nothing to the Injured Workers then take your tax money and buy more Defective Buses, and Machinery from Businesses with Huge Government contracts, while UNUM is Sucking an Estimated $15,000.00 Thousand dollars a month from Clark County Public Transportation Benefit Area, while the Employees have to Beg for insurance benefits that have been paid for since 2002.
It's your money for the buses, the Cummins engines, the UNUM insurance payments to the employer, to the human rights commission, the Wa. state DOSH inspectors, and the WA. I have been out of work since 9/10/2019 due to chronic fibromyalgia, migraines, anxiety, disk degenerative disease, loose stools, spinal stenosis, spondylosis, scoliosis and a large mass that was found in chest. I am in constant pain and I work for Providence Northeast Columbia SC. So Unum has constantly strung me on, every time my physicians fill out or submit supporting detailed and accurate paperwork they would ask for something else to be done. They even had me to complete a questionnaire form as well as my physicians to verify that I had not been seen 4/2019-6/2019 however they tried to find out anything on me to prevent them from having to pay me while I am out of work. However I was told by Sabrina at Unum that if this was a previous diagnosis that they would only pay me for 4 weeks instead of for the entire time I would be out from work.
My physician I see for my fibromyalgia wrote me out and said with a return date of 10/30/2019 however that would depend on treatment plan as well as Endocrinologist that I will be seeing for the large chest mass that was an"accidental finding" because the MRI I had done was on my neck and back. I will also be seeing a Neurologist for the severe migraines I have. On 9/30/2019 Sabrina sent out another form (physician statement) needing to be completed by my physician (Rheumatologist) with a deadline of 11/9/2019.
On 10/2/2019 I was told by Sabrina (Claims Representative @Unum) that my claim had been denied and that she had 2 nurses and her boss to look at my paperwork but it was denied because the initial Dr. (neurologist Surgeon) that took me out of work said that I could return on 9/23/2019 however I explained to Sabrina I only saw him to rule out surgery wasn't what I needed. However my rheumatologist that I see for my fibromyalgia wrote me out from 9/24/2019 till 10/30/2019 depending upon treatment plan and two addt'l consults that I will be having. However if I went back to work she, (my dr) listed several restrictions such as no heavy lifting greater than 15lbs, no repetitive bending nor stooping, no standing greater than 3 hours per day.
Unum made an ignorant decision not to pay me for a benefit that I pay for out of my check when I was able to work. It's a shame to be ill and stressed due to no income and to know that you took out STD and LTD during open enrollment. Going thru what I have went thru with UNUM was terrible. Ever since I spoke with Sabrina on 10/2 @ 2:30p I can't stop thinking about my denial and to know I work for a hospital that doesn't care about their employees to invest in another company to take over STD and LTD saddens my heart. Providence and others hired a company (UNUM) that is ripping off employees and Unum I'm sure is happy because it's free money in their pockets and probably even getting kickbacks for the end of the year bonuses and etc because they are I'm quite sure of are under the amount of claims they process vs deny.
I hope that Unum gets exposed for what they are doing to people and when you are sick and going through being denied of your benefits is the last thing you want to here ESPECIALLY when you pay for your benefits and it isn't company paid. Forms after forms and some I had to pay to get filled out as well as go sit at the Dr's office until it was faxed in. Although I am sick I did everything I could responsibly to make this process smooth by making calls and going to the physician office until the fax were recv'd. Little did Unum know I had a copy of all my records even information they requested which is how I caught Sabrina in a lie that she tried to say about one of my physcians, now had I not had my records and copies of forms I may have believed her but I thank God he gave me common sense and that I had my copies for my own records.
Another thought. Why were nurses looking at my file at Unum to determine if I was disabled or not, and in what century is a nurse degree higher than a physician? My point is dr. to dr would have not denied my claim and the two nurses that work with Sabrina that decided on my denial along with her manager must be from or on another planet that their credentials is higher than my physician to determine what is disabling or not. The facts, the evidence were there but UNUM just didn't want to pay me for what I have paid on every paycheck. I would rate them -0.

I will write this about me but I am only one person in thousands or maybe millions. Millions is more likely since this includes people from all over the world. I have always been a hard working person and picking a career as an auto technician and working hard to advance thru the years to the highest level as a Toyota Technician should prove this fact. I want you all to know this because I am a taxpayer, voter, father, husband, brother, and law abiding citizen. Here is my story. Seven years ago while I was at work, I fell down. I started dropping things from my hands. I noticed that I was gradually losing strength. I wasn't myself anymore, and slowly losing the ability to do my job. I was paid on a commission type basis. So if I couldn't work as hard and fast as usual then my pay amount dropped. I fault for a few more years as I struggled to continue.
Of course I had medical insurance, short term disability, long-term, and death insurance. I have paid for these policies for over 30 years. About four years ago, I had to leave my job due to illness and it was really becoming unsafe for myself to even be in a shop. During these years I have seen a handful of Doctors that struggled with diagnosing my issues. A clear diagnosis was uncertain and Unum insurance company demanded one. But what these doctors did agree on was that I was disabled and continuing to get worse. I was unable to continue to perform a mechanic’s job by far and the doctors noted this in their records. I was eventually Diagnosed after years and multiple doctor visits, I even took a plane to Rochester, Minnesota to the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion. I am now considered a patient there also.
I hope you are still reading along and I'm not boring you so far. Well, I find this very hard to say, but I have ALS disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease. As you most likely know, My days are numbered and there's No sunshine at the end of my rainbow. But this is not a pity party about me. My whole life was about providing for my loved ones. I am so saddened that I feel that I let everyone down because now they provide for me. This was not in my game plan. I had UNUM insurance whom has worked overtime on denying my claim. They ignored my doctors’ opinions and records, they went way low on my estimated yearly salary, and they prolonged any judgment about me collecting any funds. Which also cost me my savings. They flooded my doctors’ offices with letters and ringing phone calls for info that they could use against me.
I had one doctor out of about 7 that I have seen in the very early stages of this disease that I had seen while I was still working that told UNUM that she didn't feel that I was disabled. I wasn't far enough along to confirm any diagnosis. She also didn't care to research my illness. So I fired her. Unum used her records as their source to refuse my situation. I had to sue UNUM. My attorney told me that I couldn't sue for damages because Congress passed a law that prevented these types of lawsuits. Unum caused me so much stress that my health was really taking a hit. The attorney said that due to a bill that Congress passed stated that I can only sue Unum to force them to honor the policy that they sold me. This means that Unum has no recoil to deny claimant claims. So they Steal and rob from their customers constantly everyday.
This attorney was going to take benefit money's from me that was rightfully mine. This attorney recently dropped my case. He said that there's just not enough money in it to fight them any further. Unum gets to deny me, keep their money. I get NOTHING.... My family gets NOTHING. When I die and I will, There's NO insurance money to help them that I paid for for so many years. I now live on my wife's income. She works over-time everyday. My mother died about nine years ago and left me about 100k dollars that I put in saving, it's all gone now, spent on bills. We have been searching our home for stuff to sell. I live in Spring Texas in a nice 250k house that we have called home for so many years that is now going up for sale. I was denied Social Security benefits also as a normal thing that I have been told.
My attorney has dropped appealing this also. I guess what I am trying to tell you is that, I understand that people shouldn't be able to sue insurance companies for millions of dollars or for profit. But if there's a law that states that a person can sue an insurance company for POOR FAITH (If Proven) for five times the benefit amount, then these insurance companies wouldn't mess us over so badly. Just maybe they would be forced to take care of all the others that are legitimately disabled like they promise to do so in their policies that they sell us. I have read so many other people's comments about what Unum has done to them. I even read one about an ex-employee of Unum getting messed over by them. This is a crime or should be.
I wish you all good health now and in the future. And I pray to GOD that you never get sick or have Unum insurance or any other insurance company that is in business to steal from us. Don't ever put yourselves in our positions. Thank You for reading my story. My wishes is for everyone to take notice of this and copy and paste it. then send it to anyone and everyone on the internet, Government offices, State Reps, etc. We the people need help Badly. I hope that I'm still around to see change in this. Thanks Again, Wade.

I had a heart attack in September 2018 and was released and readmitted a few days later into intensive care for what my Doctor said that she believed was a stroke that took my hearing and I was in ICU for 2 weeks and when they took me out of the ICU I could not hear anything and to this day I am Deaf so we filed the claims with Unum for Heart Attack and a stroke which both was declined so I appealed it and started dealing with Teresa ** Lead Appeals Specialist and she had me going back and forth to the Dr.Office and faxing paperwork to her and my Primary care Dr. filled out all the paperwork and wrote a letter saying that she believed I had suffered a stroke that left me Deaf and they declined that one again and the Heart Attack so she told me when I get the denial letter to take it to the Cardiologist and they would give me the documents needed to support the heart attack so I did and faxed them over to her and 3 days later I called her to follow up and she informed me we still didn't have the supportive documents that was needed so I went back to my Cardiologist and told them she says we didn't have enough supportive documents to prove a heart attack.
Well by this time they were getting fed up also so she told me to have the Dr office call her and she would tell them what she needed so I did and I contacted Mrs.** a few days later and was talking with her and she said it clearly shows that I had the heart attack but we still did not have enough supportive documents so the Dr called her again and I followed up again today to find out that I was declined again and she mailed the letters yesterday and when I received them to take them back to the Cardiologist and maybe they could figure out what supportive documents she needed to pay my claim but the funniest part about this was when my Dr. made the comment you must be dealing with Unum and he said we have went around and around with them every time a patient tries to claim the benefits.
Now this is something I had not even opened the page on Unum until today and sure enough I started reading the reviews and everyone had went around and around with them but you know I never complained when they were removing the money out of each of my paychecks but it seems like when you need them it's impossible. I asked Mrs.** today if I needed to get an attorney to help me get what they owe me and she said that was up to me and when I get the letter to take it down to my Cardiologist and let them read it because my EKG numbers didn't support a heart attack and that's when I told her my aunt went to the ER and they ran the EKG and said nothing was showing and the next day she was having triple bypass.
This is just a way to get out of paying what they owe the insured. I could understand if I was just laying around drawing SSI and Disability but that's not the case. I want to go back to work because I like my job and fellow employees which before this I always highly recommended that the employees look at the coverages and to remember you can never have too much insurance but after dealing with this I promise I will share my experience with all the other managers when it's time to decide who we will be spending our money on. Just Beware of UNUM. They don't want to pay and they will run you around until you get fed up and quit. That's what they want you to do so make sure you read the reviews before signing your name to anything.

I am currently approved with Unum long-term disability. However, it was not easy. I currently have multiple sclerosis and while many people are able to work for many years after diagnosis, I ended up with multiple problems and diagnoses concurrently. I had a fall that resulted in a spinal cord injury and neck surgery that was critical. A few months later I ended up in the hospital with autoimmune pancreatitis and Crohn’s disease. I have now had many rheumatology positive testing which could possibly be lupus or something else but either way is definitely rheumatology. Unfortunately, all this runs in the family and I just happened to get all of it not just one or the other. Because I am 38 years old and I look very well and healthy they constantly bother me.
I have had surveillance multiple times and caught them. I have already been approved by the state for Social Security disability. But either way my disability insurance with Unum is for my own occupation which they refuse to release me to because I was a nurse practitioner and they say that I am a liability in danger to others meaning I could hurt a patient more than take care of them. Just for your information that was devastating to me and I was not expecting that to ever happen. I expected to work part time or maybe be told I couldn’t work night shift but never that they would never release me to work again as a nurse practitioner. I find it in saying that these people will do anything to make you feel like you’re doing something wrong and you actually don’t want to work.
I was living the high life with my family and had just bought my 5000 square-foot home moved my family to an upscale neighborhood and school system for all this to happen. I had nine months worth of living saved up which doesn’t matter at all if you lose it all while waiting for insurance and making a hell of a lot less than what you’re used to. However I will continue to fight them just because they are so shady. One of the surveillance tactics was a friend posted a picture of us at a restaurant when I had lunch with her and he found me that way and hung out of his truck at a stoplight to take a picture of me driving for some strange reason. I never said I couldn’t drive.
Another one was a white small car that had letters or decal letters with three numbers a-in the word news acted like they were a news company who followed me all the way from my neighborhood all the way to my son's football game. I am very thankful that I have a consultant name Linda and her last name is ** Who helps me deal with this horrible company and gives me a lot of comfort. You should look up her blog. The bottom line is you either hope to make it long enough that it won’t matter when they find A way to terminate your claim or they finally give you a settlement which I have been praying every day for so I can get rid of them. If you look her up she will help manage your claim and give you peace of mind.
Disability means if you were to work would it put you down where you couldn’t function in life? It does not mean that you can’t function at all or live a life. My last relapse was the entire month of March and April almost in. There is not a single job in this world that would be understanding and not fire me had I been working. Don’t give into this company. Pay the money and get the consultant that I recommended and do everything you can to fight for your life because that’s what I do for myself because of my husband and my three children that are my world and I can guarantee you that my future of being in a wheelchair which I’ve already been told is not something I asked for so I couldn’t work.
I would much rather be working than knowing that my future is doomed to being in a wheelchair and losing sensation and doing all the things I thought I would do when I retired. I will not let this company get me down and I will do everything I can to enjoy the life I can while I can with my husband and my children and hope that we can make it as long as we can with this horrible company that only wants to destroy. I will not let this company get me down and I will do everything I can to enjoy life I can while I can with my husband and my children and hope that we can make it as long as we can with this horrible company that only wants to destroy people and families. People and families.

I was involved in a automobile accident in 2015 which resulted in me having a broke neck. Filed my claim through my employer short term disability company which happened to be Unum. After weeks of going back and forth sending them Every form they needed or I thought so they always needed something else. What a miserable process. I finally got to the point of total frustration and told them just to forget it. I was tired of constantly faxing everything they already had twice. I told them by the time they approved the claim my neck would be Healed and they would not have to pay a thing. Which I think was their goal anyway but after a long, long, long wait I got a check. This lasted to the end of January 2016. I went back to work in February.
Now it July 2019 and I receive a letter from unum stating they overpaid me 3,142 dollars. Really it took them over three years to figure this out or they are in need of money. They state they must receive this money back or they will take legal action. Well, well I guess they think I am just going to cave and pay them something I do not owe them. They are dead wrong. I will be suing them for harassment.

My mother has a long term care policy through Unum and has terminal brain cancer. We thought it might be time to use the policy that my mother has been paying on for 13 years. We have filed the claim 60 days ago and have still not received approval on the claim. They have received doctors' notes and then told we need to get them some more doctor notes. I have contacted doctors to get the information Unum says they need. I'm not sure what part of incurable brain cancer might need more explanation. Very frustrated with this company and would not recommend them to anyone.

Injured at work in December. Go to the doctor the next day then several follow up visits. Determined it was a torn rotator cuff and sent to a specialist. Turn in the paperwork for Unum to say they only pay for 2 follow up visits even though it was 2 totally different doctors. Orthopedic doctor does injections. When they don’t deliver results he sent me to physical therapy. So I call and ask if they are going to pay off anything else. Was told to send in the paperwork which I did. Then it gets reject due to the physical therapy did not start within 90 days of the injury.
I as the patient did not determine the treatment to be used or the timeframe. Called and was told to file an appeal. I ask if it would be an independent company reviewing the appeal. Was told no. They do that internally which we all know they would never find in the patient's favor. When I ask if they would prefer to have an attorney involved was blown off like they could care less. If you have this insurance just take the premium money and put it in an account. You’ll be much better off.

Had foot surgery on April 29th. Doctor sent over appropriate UNUM paperwork stating that I would have to be off my foot for 10-12 weeks. Which getting to this point was a challenge in its own right. It has been a total struggle to say the least. They only approved me for the first 4 weeks and from that point the struggle gets worse. Had to jump through hoops every week to get approved week by week. And the 3rd to last week I only received a small portion of my funds. Which happened again on the 2nd to last payment. Which the remaining funds at this time are up in the air. At the end of the day this company will definitely make you work endlessly to get the funds you’ve been paying for out of your check every week. Customer service is lacking and the UNUM portal lacks up to date info. I’m hoping my employer will be looking for another secondary insurance company after this is all said and done....

I've been diagnosed as permanent stationary with my injuries. I've been instructed to not lift anything! After my STD ended, I attempted 2x to apply for LTD. My Doctor's support my 110%. But Unum has denied me twice stating I have nothing wrong with me and I can go lift 50lbs and go back to work. MRI's don't lie! But Unum does. My orthopedist is disgusted that Unum claims nothing is wrong with me. Unum has changed my diagnosis. Unum has never met me or have done their own exam on me. I have severe spinal stenosis, Degenerative disc disease from neck to lower back, herniated disc with 2 MRI's showing it has gotten bigger, nerve displacement.
Unum are crooks! I'm in appeal but expect it to get denied again. This has been going on for 6 months. I already consulted with an attorney who has already sued Unum and won. I requested my file from Unum. After reading it I want to vomit. They assume everyone is liars. I have to wait for my appeal decision, if denied my attorney is going after them. BEWARE of this company. They are not on your side!!!

He was pleasant and answer all my questions and resolve the issues that I had in regards to my claims account. Mr. ** was very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. I am so impressed with his customer service! (This review could it been a bad review, but because of Mr. Eric, it turn out to be a good experience). ”Thank you Mr. Eric.”

I have had a claim open with UNUM for 3 months, this is how long it has taken for them now to say my claim has been declined. I have never in my life experienced a company like this. I have the income protection policy via my employer, am off work sick with mental health issues due to a family member being brutally murdered. I am also suffering with a prolapse disc, cervical neck where some days I can’t even move out the bed due to the disc pressing on a nerve which leaves me in agony, so how I sit in a office all day without pain is beyond me. On all kinds of medication which makes me drowsy as hell, I don’t know what illness UNUM expect you to have until there medical team decide to pay out.
They clearly think also you are fit for work after a family member is murdered. Sorry that’s effected me mentally. My GP has signed me off work understandably, UNUM have had all my medical reports. I have had occupational health reviews which have stated I need more time off. UNUM staff are rude with no empathy at all. They don’t even ask how you are when you ring. They talk over you and don’t listen. If anyone is thinking of taken out a policy with this company make sure you are on your last legs before you get a payout otherwise don’t go near this company. I work for a big company and cannot understand why they have UNUM covering their colleges with a company that can’t even show any sort of compassion, empathy when you call. STAY CLEAR ALL.

I was on a medical leave with The Hartford when my work transferred me over to UNUM. They’ve been the least bit helpful. They declined leaves without clear reasoning then opened two separate leave under FMLA without my acknowledgement, this company has added tremendous unnecessary stress while I am going through a hard time. Anytime I’ve called for clarification I've only left more confused. I’ve talked to countless representatives and leave managers who have all danced around questions I’ve asked. There has been time input on my behalf for absences that were invalid. They fail to explain the way they handle time management as well as absences. This company shouldn’t be used as most people needing any kind of medical leave are typically not doing alright and have enough strife. They do not need to have a third party company come in to only complicate it more. Very disappointed with the service I have received.

Upon speaking with Rachel (team lead) she advises me they have been "overwhelmed" Upon requesting expedited care of new case with prompt turn around time, I was told that I would need to speak with a supervisor "Lisa" who is too busy to speak with me at the current time (of course). I work full time and meet all requirements for a claim to be paid. None of that seems to matter. I spoke with two employees and both said I wasn’t covered due to not working at my place of employment?! I work 50+ hours a week when I’m well. This is the second time I've had to use this company for short term disability due to pregnancy. They were condescending and rude 3 1/2 years ago and they are exactly the same now. I have to stand 8-9 hours a day to do my job. The first time I had round ligament pain so bad at 30 weeks pregnant that I literally could not stand for 1 week while I healed.
After that my MD took me off due to the fact that I could not perform my job duties any longer. They constantly harassed me and made me feel like I was not a hard worker and that I was taking advantage of them. They called me every couple of days to insinuate that I was lying and that I could return to work. It got to the point where I had to tell them that I felt like I was being harassed and that they needed to stop calling me. It was a terrible experience. This time around I wore a support belt so I could work until 36 weeks (which is the normal time to go on mat. leave). Long Term Disability - During open enrollment in 2018, on October 30th, I applied for long term disability coverage. The same day I faxed the completed eligibility of insurance forms and received a confirmation that the fax was received. In December I received an email stating that they needed my eligibility of insurance forms, I called and spoke with them and was told that they had the completed form but hadn’t reviewed them yet. In January, I again received an email stating that they needed my eligibility of insurance forms. I phoned them again and was informed that they did have the forms but hadn’t reviewed them yet.
On February 26, 2019 I logged into my employers benefit site and found a notice in red that the long term disability coverage was waived. I then contacted our benefit administrator. She looked into the issue and said she was informed that I hadn’t sent in my eligibility of insurance forms. I still had the forms as well as the original fax confirmation. That same evening (Feb. 26) I faxed all of that to Unum again including the original fax confirmation.
On the morning of February 27, 2019 I received an email from the benefits administrator stating that she was informed that I had been declined for medical reasons. Funny, that I could be denied when they supposedly had not received my eligibility of insurance forms. I then contacted Unum to ask why I was denied. The representative said she could not tell me, I was then put on hold to see if an underwriter could speak with me. An underwriter was available so I was transferred but had to leave a voice mail.
Short Term Disability - A claim was started as I was scheduled for hip replacement surgery on January 7, 2019. The claim was approved and I had no problems with receiving the weekly payments. On either January 29th or 30th I received a phone call from my assigned case manager. She wanted to know why I hadn’t returned to work and stated that they felt I should be back at work from their review of my job description. I found this interesting since I thought my doctor was in charge of my care and the determination of when I should return to work. In informed her that I was to see the doctor again on February 20th and that I anticipated he would release me to return to work on Monday February 25th. She informed me that was unacceptable and if I saw him on the 20th I needed to be back to work on the 21st.
During this entire conversation it is an understatement to say that she was snippy and condescending to me. I feel that since this is a service paid for by my employer, as the employee I am the customer by default and I shouldn’t have had to be disrespected on the phone by her. I did have my doctor appointment on the 20th and as anticipated he released me to return to work on Monday February 25th. I had been instructed by the case manager to call her after I saw the doctor to update her. Since I didn’t want to deal with her again after the way she behaved during our previous conversation I made it a point to call at lunch time in hopes that I would get her voice mail which it did. I also uploaded the return to work notice online.
