I have had a miserable experience dealing with this company. It’s nearly impossible to call them and get a human on the phone. When they do reach out to me, they ask incredibly intrusive questions with zero sensitivity. Two weeks after my double mastectomy, they called me to inquire about how “intrusive” my surgery was and can I “remember how much was removed during it.” There is a lack of compassion in their customer service, and a lack of basic understanding of the medical procedures that they are calling to inquire about. I have to continually submit the same information for my doctors every 2 to 3 weeks in order to get my leave approved for the amount of time that my doctors have requested. I will be filing a complaint with my HR company when I return to office about how awful the experience with Unum has been.

Their whole portal should be be an email system. They got literally every document factually wrong for my basic, standard paternity leave claim. Their phone maze doesn't get you to a real human. The don't have online forms or ways to just drop them a message. Literally every single time they get their documents wrong (wrong hire dates, document leave dates not matching what you tell them. Statuses incorrect. Missing parts of the leave that were discussed), you have to do a 20-40 minute painful chat support session. They will promise that another team will input your info properly and fix your forms. But they do not deliver on the promised timelines, and the documents are always wrong.

I have been waiting on claims to be approved for over a month and have not been able to take time off work due to financial reasons until my claim is approved. All my documentation has been provided and I have to follow up by calling every other day in which representatives ask me the same questions I have answered previously weeks before. It's odd given that I've paid into this insurance for so long and am requesting a few weeks of leave for mental health issues I need to address. I've left multiple messages for my claims specialist who has yet to return my calls.

This is the worst company I have ever had to deal with. They keep saying are missing documents. My doctor faxed them documents. It was confirmed and when I call them and told that it was not received. They said they didn’t receive it. They claimed that they sent the documents to my doctor. They claim no documents were faxed to them. It’s so hard to speak with someone there. They always refer you to their portal, which is not clear. Someone called me that was very rude. I have not received a paycheck because my employer is waiting on their decision. I am a colon cancer stage four survivor and I need my money to pay my doctor bills. These people are outrageous.

I’ve applied to Unum Group multiple times and continue to walk away feeling extremely frustrated. My skills and experience meet, and often exceed- the job requirements. Yet, I’ve never had the chance to speak with an actual person. The interview process relies on recording video responses, which feels impersonal and stressful. It doesn’t allow for meaningful interaction or clarification and creates unnecessary barriers for candidates. For a company that promotes inclusion, the process does not feel accessible-especially with individuals with disabilities. The hiring experience does not reflect the values the company claims to support. Overall, the process feels disconnected and discouraging. I strongly encourage Unum to improve how they engage with candidates and make their hiring practices more human and inclusive.

Just received a cancellation of my LTC policy after 20 years of payments. Their offer was to reimburse me for my payments only versus the $400,000 in LTC coverage they might have to pay if I needed it some day. What a ripoff from this insurer. I wish someone would begin a class action suit for all policy holders

They will not make a decision until surgery is complete. They want me to call or go online the day surgery is complete. I will then find out if approved or denied. The last thing you need to worry about for your recovery. I wonder what makes them think I will be in any condition to do this. If denied, I will have to fight this. I am expecting a hospital stay for a while. I hope I am getting paid for this. Do not use this company. I am only using because my place of business is using for any leaves. The company I work for definitely did not do their research. I work for a very large reputable company.

The phone number is pointless and will loop you endlessly through an automated service. Good luck reaching a representative and figuring out why things are taking so long. They don't care as long as they don't have to pay more than the bare minimum for workers. I'm on my 4th call and still can't get through to an actual person.

Lazy customer service. I had surgery on 1-15-26 that has me off for a month. All paperwork has been done since 1-17-26, but still under review as of 1-14-26. I go back to work in two days and after talking with them still haven’t received a dime

I called regarding my short term disability a week and a half before my surgery. I gave them all my information including the hospital’s, surgeon, day of surgery, type of surgery, last day I will be working to when I’ll be back. I said anything else I need to do she said no. I even went on the portal/called and everything is in review.
Four days after surgery I called unum, they said, “we didn’t send the paperwork to the hospital because we didn’t have it.” I said how do you not have it I gave it to you on the 28th? They replied you were suppose to call day of surgery. I said day of? What do you mean…
So I call again the next day and I asked if they faxed the information over. They said “their fax number isn’t working, so we mailed it. This will take 10 business days.” So I call the surgeons office and they said… we receive faxes all day that’s not accurate. So I called again told them to fax it and email it. Well big surprise they don’t email.
Unums communication:- go to the portal. Portals “do to list” says nothing about calling them day of surgery, missing information they claimed on the phone.
- portal and automatic message says the claim is is review… Am I missing something here?
Do better. We all hate our jobs too.

I wouldn't recommend UNUM if they were doing the work for free. They are the most incompetent and unprofessional group of people. I underwent a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy w breast reconstruction surgery and was told that I could return to work in 4 days post-op. It was a lot of back and forth with the representative who was working my claim to speaking with a supervisor who seem to be just as clueless as the rep. In the end, the claim was approved for the duration of my recovery but to have to deal with such a illness and the lack of compassion as if the funds were coming out of their pocket was absurd. Insult to injury, I had to go back into surgery this past week and I am dealing with the same issue, delayed claim and they have documentation to support my surgery.

Hi, just wanted to say do not buy disability insurance with Unum insurance. The insurance is a ripoff. I had disability insurance for over 16 years and paid over 3100 hundred dollars and finally needed to use it and was told I needed to be out of work 3 months before I could get any compensation. I never read it in the policy and never discussed it with the customer service after several conversations. The company is very dishonest in the policy they offer. Please be aware of buying disability insurance with Unum insurance.

This has been one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had. I submitted all of my paperwork to Unum on December 19, and as of January 16, I am still dealing with delays, misinformation, and constant runarounds just to receive my payout. My case manager, has been completely ineffective. While he did return a phone call, he stated that he sent a letter to my doctor for completion. Unfortunately, my doctor’s office never received it. My doctor’s office is extremely organized and on top of all documentation, they confirmed multiple times that nothing was received. Even worse, Unum had no confirmation that the fax was ever sent. How can a company operate without any system to confirm whether critical documents were sent or received?
I have called Unum over 20 times, if not more. Every single day, I’m told something different. I was repeatedly told the turnaround time would be 2–5 business days, yet it took over three weeks just to supposedly send a letter to my doctor and even that didn’t happen correctly. Every day it’s a new excuse, a new issue, or a new delay. This process has been unnecessarily stressful, exhausting, and completely unprofessional. The lack of accountability and poor communication is unacceptable. Unum desperately needs better systems, better case management, and significantly improved customer service. The way this company operates is atrocious, and I truly don’t understand how this level of inefficiency is allowed to continue.

If I could give 0 stars I really would. This is the WORST company I have ever came into contact with. They take their time and they do not listen to the doctor and his recommendations for time off. I am receiving intensive therapy and was told my coverage ends in 4 days. They state they need an update. Was anyone going to call me saying this? Nope! They make you literally do their job as they don't even know what they're talking about. I still have yet to receive my payment of $1500, I called today and the woman goes, "I have to ask your caseworker why you didn't get your check." Just reissue it, **!!!! The amount of time and energy you waste with these brainless ** is so wrong. Do better honestly, but I know you guys can't. LOL.

The 1 star reviews are correct. You basically have to do their work to get anything done. And they fall back on company procedures to gaslight you. We don't work there. How would we know if someone Unum said can do this job is telling us wrong information. Instead of telling us, tell your workers what should of been done. To get your claims specialist, you have to request them to call. But most times they are going to rude and indifferent. I treat my pet better than they do us reading these reviews. If we were talking about magazine subscriptions I'm sure most of us wouldn't have bothered to write a review. But this is our health. Many of us get this insurance through our employer. Which means not only are we trying to get better but also KEEP OUR JOB. But Unum doesn't care. And saying sorry will not correct the harm that's been done, not only physically but mentally. These reviews are heartbreaking. I don't understand how they're able to conduct business still.

I have been paying for short term disability for almost 4 years and I recently filed a claim for maternity leave. Short term disability is supposed to pay 50% of wages for 6 weeks. That's only after you use all your PTO and wait a month for “elimination period”. So that means you actually only get paid for 2 weeks. But the first payment is deposited late. So the reality is you only get paid for 1 week. The way it is advertised as 6 wks of pay is grossly inaccurate and borderline fraudulent. Don’t pay for Unum disability insurance. They will take your money and give you nothing in return. SUCH A SCAM!

There is no point in having coverage if you have it through this company. They deny, deny, deny until you are forced to call and speak with a representative. Each representative you speak with will tell you something different, so hope and pray you get someone who knows something about their job when you call. I will not be able to get any further dental work done EVEN though my employer forces me to give money to this dreadful provider BECAUSE I can not afford the out of pocket costs.

This is the shittiest short term organization on earth. I was disabled in June 2025. Drew benefits for 6 weeks and they cut me off. As of today Sept 29,2025. They are bunch of liars. Don’t pay these benefits. They are useless.

If I could leave 0 stars I would. The process through UNUM has been one of the worst experiences ever. I submitted my first claim ever, because my mental health, and the claims specialist, her name is Alycia, argued with me and denied my claim saying I was committing fraud. Even though, my psychiatrist submitted a letter of intent and documents from our appointment about my claim, Alycia said she would not approve the claim, because she said both myself and my doctor were wrong. This only made the already stressful situation more stressful. She still argued with me and said I needed more documentation to support my claim, to which I said I would just submit a new claim then and get a new claims specialist, so she undenied it and left it pending.
So, I reached out to support asking what was going on, and they said only Alycia could explain that to me and they could set an alert to have her call me back, so I said yes please (because they will not just let you speak to you specialist when you call, you can only request for a call form them). Then I waited the day I was told she "HAD TO," call me back before the end of the business day, it was required of her after the request was put in. Then I never received the call. So, I called again the next morning and explained she never called and the person on the phone said she put in her notes that she did call and leave me a voicemail, which was a complete lie!
The person on the phone said, maybe I had accidentally blocked the number, to which I said absolutely not and I can prove from my phone records, that no call nor voicemail was ever left and she lied. So, I asked for her manager, and of course they said her manager whose name is Taylor was not available, but they would put in a request to have him call me back by the end of this business day. I never received a call from her manager that day, but received a call from Alycia instead. She immediately started telling me I had a bad attitude and she did not want to talk to me, because I called her out on her bs. Then she hung up on me.
I then later did receive a call and a voicemail from her manager, but since I missed his call, I was not going to be able to speak to him and have to go through the whole process of a call request again. From there, my doctor wrote a letter of intent for me, explaining she is the professional doctor, not the claims specialist, and she had never once in her time working as a psychiatrist been denied by a insurance company like this. So, my doctor also submitted every document from her notes, from every appointment I had with her, going two years back. That is when I looked UNUM up online and saw other people who have gone through pretty much all the same issues and there were multiple lawsuits against them for those issues. I was advised to do the same, but I was already under so much stress and my mental health disorders and symptoms were already worsened, this felt like too big a task for me to take on.
Finally, they approved my doctor's documents, but then it was one thing after another, and they said they needed a document from my work and every time something was submitted on my claim, they had 5 business days to approve or deny or move forward. They did this 3-4 different times, so it took almost an entire month after submitting my claim for it to finally be approved, and because of this I did not know if I was going to be paid or not. My doctor had wanted me to start an IOP (intensive out patient program) because of the whole situation and why I submitted the claim in the first place, but IOPs are expensive, even with insurance, so I wanted to wait until I knew I was getting paid, as that added even more stress. So, I was not getting the care I needed.
When it was finally approved, I wanted to start the IOP, but now because of the timing, I had already used my 4 weeks of pay for this leave and now my paycheck would only be paid out at 60% for any remaining time, which is exactly what I did not want to happen. My plan was to only take 4 weeks off, but because of how long they waited to approve each document, those 4 weeks ended without any of my care being started.
So, I then needed to ask for an extension for my leave, which thank the lord they gave me a new claims specialist, and with my doctor's note she approved everything right away and did not wait for the end of the 5th business day, she was the only bright part of this whole situation. Then I got paid finally from UNUM for my leave benefits which would be paid out at 60% of my paycheck. But, they only paid me 30% instead of the 60%, so now I am currently awaiting to be contacted to talk about that issue. This company is a complete nightmare, and they should be ashamed of how they treat people who are in physical and mental pain.

This is the company CVS is currently using for short-term disability benefits. My caseworker was non-responsive recently. To the tune of seven business days! When I contacted my PCP, they noted a response more than 10 business days earlier when I checked the website I had no to do listed When I contacted CVS leave department, they said I had to file all questions and complaints through Unum when employee specific. After I did so, I got a manager that assisted me, but then she too completely screwed my payment by combining two weeks together!
No other time had that been done since I’ve been on short term. Because of her error, I was charged over $500 in taxes and lost $740 in take home for two weeks! As you can imagine, we are not getting paid that much while on short term in the first place and then non-responsive issues were Unum’s! This is so disheartening and crippling! The amount of stress due to other people‘s errors and completely out of your control and is your livelihood that the employer puts in their hands.
