Have disability policy for over "35 years" with John Hancock. Recently became disabled and after filing with Hancock had no response after attempt after attempt. They handed case to UNUM and stated begin process over again after already doing this for 8 months. Still nothing. The policy has 60 day elimination period and now doing this for over 14 months and down thousands of dollars. Now a major lawsuit for not honoring policy. Hancock and UNUM did not deny or approve claim. Simply not honoring policy. 35 years of premiums and with letters of disability from doctor specialists.. Still Nothing. Now with attorneys so should cost at least thousands and thousands of dollars in court. I am already out besides the 35 plus years of premiums over $20,000 so far trying to get policy honored. CORRUPT!!!

This company is a horrible place to work at much less use for your employee’s leave of absence or any other product they offer. They give you the runaround. They do not care about you. They will have all information needed to approve your claim and you will have to wait weeks for pay. They treat their employees the same way as their customers. All they care about is making money for themselves. DO NOT use this company. I have been waiting almost 2 months for my approval letters and pay. My doctor has sent in everything they need for approval multiple times. Unum will not reach out to you to tell you what’s needed. They will deny your claim before they make an outbound phone call attempt to help you get your claim approved. They do not help during a stressful time in your life when you and/or your family member are sick. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS.

These guys had a license to steal!! I don't think they sell LTC anymore & thank the lord they can't screw anybody else out of their money. My wife waited the 90 day period just to find out they were only making 1 payment, so I ordered a cancellation of the policy & was told just think you don't have to wait another 90 days on another claim. Her Dr. retired so she went to another & was told too bad we didn't hear back from her Dr. so we`re not paying. I thought about a Lawyer but figured they would get most of the money, another shyster. I hope Unum goes under & doesn't survive!!

The claim rep claimed a clinical review was to be conducted on August 31, 2022 and a letter would be in the portal the next day. Nothing is there along with inaccurate Information.

Where can I possibly begin.... My employer started to utilize Unum for overseeing FMLA/disability claims. I have had NOTHING but grief and anxiety since the switch. They will outright REFUSE to contact you unless you send a note through their website which can be tracked. If you call them, don't make the mistake of telling any of the "customer service" (what a joke) representatives they are wrong about something because when you do, they will first try to talk over you. When you refuse to allow them to do that, they will practice call avoidance and put you on mute so that you have no way to fill the satisfaction survey or request an escalation. Today I immediately called back to try to get a supervisor, only to never have one pick up. Tried to call again.... Got the after hours message.
Besides their "customer service" issues:
- I have a legitimate, LIFELONG issue that will never go away. UNUM apparently refuses to allow my intermittent leave any longer than 6 months, and then further REFUSES TO ADVISE THAT RECERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED. They then lied about it to say that 6 months was the maximum time anyone could have....- They will always, ALWAYS refuse documents and try to find some sort of "Gotcha!" moment, claiming there is information they are "missing".
- They can't keep ANYTHING straight. My paperwork has been filled out the exact same way two times now, and somehow they come to DIFFERENT conclusions about each.
- No matter how many times I tell them they will never receive permission to contact my doctor and have no legal right to do so, they continually insist and send my forms to fill out for it.
I'm to the point of reaching out to report their nonsense.

I have no issues receiving mail from anyone else but them....How convenient is this you can policies to lower the possibilities of claims..Claims you obviously don't pay looking at your other reviews!! I will take my business elsewhere. I'm not begging or dealing with this type of extreme substandard customer service!

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with UNUM Long Term Care Insurance. We are a family in crisis. I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis, Trigeminal Neuralgia, and bladder cancer. These are just a few of my numerous debilitating conditions. Additionally, I am wheelchair bound and need assistance with all ADLs, including personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, toileting, transferring, ambulating, and eating. My primary care physician provided an Attending Physician’s Statement verifying that I need assistance with 6 out of 6 ADLS. A nurse, sent by UNUM to evaluate me, confirmed Dr. **’s evaluation that I need assistance with 6 out of 6 ADLS.
I have provided medical records from my primary care physician, oncologist, and surgeon verifying my multiple debilitating diagnoses. Furthermore, we have been sending in Weekly Caregiver Monthly Reports documenting the care I have needed dating back to February. My case manager at UNUM has proven discourteous, deceptive, and shown a total lack of compassion for myself and my family. Her supervisor failed to resolve any of our complaints or further the status of our claim, so that I may receive the benefits I am entitled to. We have patiently waited for 8 months and have seen no progress made. As a result of UNUM’s poor business practices, I have personally suffered numerous falls, extreme financial hardships, and undue stress on myself, my wife, and my 2 daughters, who have been forced to serve as my caregivers.
My wife has recently suffered a stroke, which her doctor indicated was likely stress induced. I have been paying the premium for long-term healthcare insurance from UNUM Insurance for over 20 years. I continue to pay the premium with little hope of receiving the federally mandated benefits I am entitled to. Numerous physicians submitted substantial documentation to UNUM stating that I need assistance and am entitled to federally mandated benefits. Yet, no matter what we provide, UNUM demands more. They will eagerly collect your premium, but fail to pay your benefits.

My Employer utilized UNUM and went into process feeling relief since I knew I would have to be off work a considerable amount of time when we initiated process for my Daughter’s Kidney Transplant. My experience has been terrible. First they continually denied the claim every time I was off work for the same claim. I completed all the paperwork and obtained Doctor’s completed paperwork and given green light. On the next intermittent FMLA claim, they denied for a heart transplant and all paperwork states Kidney Transplant. (Incompetence in review process)
They acknowledged error and apologized and escalated for resolution. But yet, no resolution. I am in tears at this whole process in addition to being exhausted from medical stays with daughter. The only word in their vocabulary is Deny. My employer has been so great to work with thus far in assisting to resolve but I will encourage them to drop UNUM for another provider. I am sure it won’t be difficult, since who wants to pay money to a provider who doesn’t deliver. If I could give this company a negative, I would. They insult my intelligence.

My consulting company switched our dental insurance from Metlife Dental to Unum insurance at the beginning of 1/1/22. If your employer offers you this dental insurance be sure to not take it and get your own. It's not worth hassle of trying to get the services paid for. It has been almost 5 months since I submitted a claim, and they still have not paid my dentist for the services. I resubmitted the claim again, and the customer service representative said it would take 30 for them to respond. SMH... This by far a racket and the worst experience I have had with dental coverage.

I applied for my leave absence back in February due to accident with my dog. Each time I visited the doctor he would put me on three weeks extension. I would submit my forms via computer each time. Finally, Unum stated payment will be on this a certain date. Well, today I check my status and now it is pending again due to doctor stating extend another three weeks. I call a representative and she stated they will not start a payment until my next visit. Plus, I have to be disable for sixty days before my benefit even start. Well, I am out of all my sick and ETO time. Representative stated there no back pay. I have medical and personal bills I have to pay. How I am to pay my co-payment for doctor visit to even hope I be release. This not fair at all I was on the phone crying. I did not ask for this injury. I am sixty years old and have never broken a bone in my until now. Do not waste your earnings paying this company for your hardship.

I developed covid pneumonia, diagnosed with covid 1/4/22, ER 1/6/22, and "officially" admitted shortly after midnight 1/7/2022. I was critical ill in the hospital for 10 days. I have been dealing with the nightmare of recovering from it since then. I am still home and just got off oxygen last week (yay.). I tried to claim on my Unums short-term disability plan a few days ago. I turned in everything they requested and got a response from them today.
Unum denied my claim because I didn't stay in the hospital 4 more days. My release papers said I was in the hospital for 10 days. I missed this company helping me because I didn't stay in the hospital long enough!?! Sooooo I should of asked the doctor to left me admitted there in the hospital longer? Next time, I pray I never have a nightmare like this again, but if I do, I will tell the doctor I need to stay 14 days so my critical illness plan will cover my stay. I am so stressed. I thought I finally get some help in paying some of my medical bills since I was "critical ill." Nope. Unum is a horrible company to deal with. Their customer service phone system has long wait times. Monday I waited 40 minutes to talk to a live agent in their critical illness department. WHAT A JOKE UNUM IS. STAY AWAY IF YOU CAN!!!!

It’s a sad, sad world having to deal with creeps like this. They have paid millions and millions of dollars in fines for falsely denying claims (I wonder who got that money?!). I paid premiums for years, and when I truly needed to claim disability, they found every reason not to grant it. In my opinion, it would have taken a lawsuit to get a reversal and I simply was not willing to put myself through that stress. So, I canceled the policy. I had paid my premium on June 1st, and canceled the policy on June 8th. To add injury to insult, they have yet to refund me the pro-rated amount for the month of June (they owe me for 22 days that were paid for, before my cancelation), and we're now in the month of November. I went on to file a complaint with the Tennessee Insurance Commission. I regret throwing away my hard earned money on years of premiums. What a waste. BUYER BEWARE.

In 1999 I purchased a long term care insurance policy that would now pay benefits of $10,000 per month for my lifetime. I am looking into entering a continuum of care facility and wanted UNUM to send them a copy of my policy. UNUM keeps sending them (and me) a different policy. Despite protestations, they ignore me and send it again. Their substitution contains language about "critical illness/critically ill" as a determiner of benefits while my policy only requires that I be disabled in 2 or more ADL. I think I am being victimized by a ruse to decrease my benefits through an attempt to substitute a different, more restrictive policy.

Quit my job, wanted to keep my same life insurance. Submitted all the paperwork, sent it in, they said I didn't submit a blank check, which we did, did it again. Months later we noticed that they didn't take from our bank account so the phone calls started. Hung up on, all members of the office are in a meeting all day, etc. Over a week later I get someone to help. Nobody can find my policy based on name, SS#, DOB, or company. I dug through paperwork, got the policy number, call back, nobody can find it based on that. They go to transfer you, hang up. Call back, get the number they trying to transfer to in case, they try to transfer, hung up. Call that new number, on hold for over 30m, even try on my wife's phone number, seemingly get better results, hung up on again!
Finally get an answer on the my phone, get attitude from the start, no answers as to why nobody can find my account, tell her to stop auto debit, more attitude, won't even answer my questions, just dead silence. Find out you can't access your account online or login to see payments or even view your account with them. All you can do is call and harass them! We find out how to terminate with them, I end the call. I called my bank and stopped future payments, they tell me that the company might try to use a different name to get around the block. Lovely. I don't think I've ever had this bad of customer service! Ever!

My experience with Unum Dental has been horrible. I have periodontal disease and switched to a new dentist. The dentist was very reasonable and performed perio-maintenance. I have great teeth but lousy gums. The dentist Tom ** did a great job, and the insurance company has made his office submit and resubmit multiple times. I am a teacher in Texas, and Advanced Financial Group in Lufkin, TX picked this insurance company. I might be getting dental through a private company if I can when the benefits become available again. I tried to get their fax number for the requested documentation, and they refused. I purchased LTC insurance through my employer with Unum in 2012 for both myself and my husband. We purchased a specific dollar amount and time frame recommended by my financial adviser for an average of what most people would need. I just recently filed a claim for my husband whom at age 69 has early onset Alzheimer's and needs 7/10 help with his daily needs and is now in memory care. My experience with Unum has been excellent. They have been kind, extremely responsive and quick to approve our claim. Our monthly payments are being received on time as expected. My mom purchased a long term care policy thru her employer 20 years ago. I have the original policy as well as all her payments and correspondence. In September of 2020 she was placed into a Memory Care facility due to dementia. I started the claim process in September and it is February 13, 2021 and Unum has still not honored the contract. I submitted all paperwork plus my DPA. They lost my DPA twice, needed Dr’s orders plus clinical notes twice. Set up Direct Deposit - still not getting correct payments. Her policy is to pay $1000 for 24 months. First payment in January was $560. When asked why, the Benefit Specialist said they didn’t know what licensing her Memory Care had so they were paying a lower rate. After 4 months they didn’t think about that?
About a week later, I received a call stating the full rate was approved. I asked what is the full rate and he reluctantly said $1000. I asked to confirm the length of time and he said, “I don’t have that information “. He calls back a week later and says yes, 24 months. I just got her check for January - it’s for $620. UNUM is a scam. The longer they avoid paying, the greater likelihood she will die and they can keep her benefit. I have never dealt with a more corrupt company. At first I just thought they were incompetent, but I have realized it is a time delay process for them. My mom would have been better off putting her money into a minimum yield investment vehicle. I have spent unknown hours dealing with the company and it is still not honoring its contract! Shame UNUM. You should not be in the marketplace. Preying on the elderly, when they can’t help themselves and need the benefit at the most costly time of their life ($6,600 a month).

After years of paying my premium bi-weekly... for over ten years. Then receiving long term benefits after a series of spine surgeries and was determined to be disabled by the surgeons. This company has now decided to ask me for the benefit money back after I began receiving SSDI. They calculated what SS would pay me then adjusted my benefit to under livable wages a month. My calculations have shown that I paid them over a ten year span tens of thousands in premiums and now they are asking that I pay them 10% or four years of what they paid since going out on long term. I have paid them more than twice over in premiums during my employment before retiring with this disability. It’s not fair and I am gonna fight them.

2 STD claims for my back surgeries. After dealing with countless record requests, requests going to the wrong doctor MANY times, VERY late payments such as 8-12 weeks late, sending literally HUNDREDS of pages of records just for them to “need more information”, flooding my doctors office with the physicians statement form DOZENS of times for the same surgery saying they needed more information. Unum is directly responsible for destroying me financially, EVERY payment I received was so late that it set me behind on my bills so bad I’m still trying to get caught back up, months later. Their delays have destroyed my credit scores, my car got repossessed twice because of Unum's late checks. Luckily my bank understood the situation after I told them about my surgeries and dealing with Unum.
I burned all of my savings just to try to keep from losing my house while I waited for a check from them. All the while dealing with customer service reps making “notes” about the urgency of the situation, which they were causing in the first place, and them saying, “Oh I’m sorry”. I would rather go through both back surgeries over again, without anesthesia, than deal with Unum again. Stay very far away from this company, they will bury you in record request, tell you they don’t have enough information, and force you to wait for months to get a payment. You’d be better of begging for change on the corner.

I am a person who has had two STD claims this year. For the first my employer used Cigna and the experience was great. Good service. Accurate accounting and prompt payments. Then my employer switched to UNUM and the experience is 100% the opposite on all counts . My claim rep is one step above moron. Payments are very slow. It is now 12/24 and my last payment was for pay period ending 12/2 even though my claim status is approved thru 12/15. Of the four payments I have received two have been incorrect and needed supplemental payments. Each time requiring me to spend time explaining the error to the claims rep. In frustration I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told I could not.
This is the poorest service I have ever received. The kicker is that there is no question about the claim. I had major surgery that required a two week hospital stay. I have given up on them and turned it over to my employers HR staff. I don't know what the savings was for switching but the wasted time trying to deal with claims will clearly off set any savings. Stay away from UNUM!
