Purchased a Toro zero turn with a BRIGGS and Stratton 24hp motor. I have a level 7500 square foot lot that I cut frequently and still only have 30 hours on a 3-year-old mower. The mower is kept in a shed and not exposed to the elements. Recently the Briggs engine started smoking with a strong odor of unburnt gas. Had it taken in for repairs (about a month before the 3 yr warranty expires). After disassembly, the repair shop said the cylinders were rusted.(?) To my knowledge I've never used a high content ethanol gas. Toro and Briggs rejected a warranty claim saying the water in the ethanol rotted the cylinders. My $4000 zero turn now needs a $2000 repair. The guys I work with laughed when I told them I bought a Toro mower and laughed harder when I said it had a Briggs and Stratton motor on it.

Runs like the day it was bought and my lawn mowers have Briggs on them too. Never had issues so I dont see why all you are having issues. You must not maintain them properly. My neighbor had a mower he bought 12 years ago. Used and never changed the oil and it's still running today. I wouldnt own any other than a Briggs.

I bought this mower from "brandnewengines.com" on March 20th, 2019 with my understanding it had a 2 year warranty. In the fall the mower started running very rough (chocking). I contact brandnewengine's about where to take it for warranty work. They said "Ball Equipment in Parkville, Mo. was the closest Simplicity authorized deal". In early December 2019 I took it to Ball Power Equipment. When I told them the problem they said it should be covered by my warranty. In early January they finally called saying my mower was ready and the bill was $500+ dollars. When I asked why it was not covered by warranty the girl said she didn't know and the owner "Mr. **" would call me probably the next day.

After 3 days Mr. ** called and said the spindles that he replaced were ruined because they had no grease in them. Impossible- the mower was fully serviced by brandnew engines before delivery and I greased it several times in the 9 months I used (the manual only calls for lubrication once a year (12 months). He said the fuel pump was ruined by me running ethanol fuel in it (manual say up to 10% is safe). He also said blade needed replaced. So I contacted simplicity about the warranty work. A man (Ron ?) Called me and said he talked to Mr ** and that he told him the spindles were ruined by me hitting something (changed the story sounded better I guess) and that I was should be running additive to the fuel to counteract the ethanol (in my manual the only time it says anything about adding additives to the fuel is storage).

It was obvious from the beginning Ball's was not happy about doing warranty work on a mower he didn’t sell. He was asking where I bought the mower and why (HE said probably to avoid paying taxes on it). He was rude and bound to find a way to charge me. Ron from simplicity was no help (I was wrong; dealer was right). The reason I bought the m mower was knowing I would be covered for 2 years. But I see now how you stand behind your product. I will not recommend your product to anyone. Ed **. p.s. The only work I authorised was the carburetor problem. Model# 2691318-00

I can get no answers from B & S or Simplicity about solving the problem other than to take it to a 'warranty center' - but they don't tell me where one is or how I'm supposed to get it there. I bought a Snapper XD electric mower, but it's a Briggs and Stratton product and comes with a manual with their name on it. One of the two 82V batteries that came with the mower would not fully charge on the initial charge and never would on subsequent charges. According to the manual, it is charging to 60-80% of capacity. It runs the mower about 25% less time than the "good" battery that came with it. I've now called B&S 3 times. The first two times, I was encouraged to use the battery a few times and recharge it, to see if it would become normal. It hasn't. I called today, expecting them to send me a new battery. The service rep said that his supervisor said that my faulty battery is performing better than their minimum standards and they're not going to replace it. Thanks a lot!

Early this summer, I purchased a mower with a Briggs and Stratton motor. I literally used it four times before the engine failed. I took it to the dealer thinking that they would honor the warranty being a great company and reputable brand. It sat at the dealer for six weeks before I finally called Briggs and Stratton to give them the business over the phone. One week later, they rejected my claim due to lack of lubrication. The mower was running fine the first four times I used it. How does a good motor just fail when the thing had oil in it from day one?? DO NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCT. I will continue to give them bad reviews, because they completely let me down. Having to borrow someone else's mower every week while I waited for a rejected claim that I thought would be a no-brainer for them, is not something I will ever go through again.

I purchased the mower in April of 2017 to mow a 1/4 acre city lot with a ranch home, garage and pass through driveway. This yard takes just under 20 minutes to mow. Mowing in this area is once a week in April through June, every other week July through November and none in winter. I had finished mowing and was cleaning the mower. I test pulled after cleaning and the mower didn't start. On the fourth pull the mower made a clank sound and I could no longer pull the starting cord. I tried internet recommendation such as removing the plug and pulling, checking the pull mechanism, and checking the blade. The engine remained seized. I checked the oil, proper level and clear.

The mower has a three year warranty so Toro recommended taking it to an authorized dealer. The dealer reported it and Toro forwarded the claim to Briggs and Stratton. Briggs said I must've run it without oil so the warranty is voided. They didn't care about the age and very little use this mower had seen. Purchased April 2017, died in June 2019. Really Briggs and Stratton? Something has changed.

Most people expect to do nothing to their lawn mower but start it and cut the grass. If you use ethanol gasoline you MUST USE FUEL STABILIZER to combat the negative effects of the ethanol in fuel. My last Toro push mower with Briggs and Stratton engine lasted 19 years, absolutely NO ISSUES. Annual oil change, spark plug change, sharpen blade and always added fuel stabilizer to my gasoline supply can. Read online effects of ethanol in fuel, fuel goes bad 30-60 days, use fuel stabilizer good for at least one year. I have two lawn mowers both Toro with Briggs and Stratton engines, after sitting 6 months this winter in outside shed, started on first or second pull. Lazy owners who DO NOT perform annual maintenance OR have a mower shop repair the annual maintenance is usually the main issues with poor mower performance. Bought a Poulan Pro lawn mower about a year ago equipped with a Briggs & Stratton Series 500E engine. It performed as expected the first couple of times I used it then took a turn for the worse. It began "smoking" from the area of the air cleaner and seemed to lack power. This problem continued to get worse where the engine "quit". The air filter was VERY saturated with oil. I ended up throwing it away. The engine appears to have "blown up" after no more than 8-10 hours of use! I couldn't believe it! Once upon a time Briggs and Stratton was an "icon" in small engines but it doesn't appear to be that way anymore. My advice is to anyone purchasing equipment with a small engine, shop for anything WITHOUT a Briggs and Stratton engine.

I bought a Toro 22” recycle mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine in it 3 years ago. Was the worst mistake I ever made. I had to replace the carburetor 3 times because it was made of cheap plastic which could not be adjusted and they kept breaking down. The mechanic could not just clean it out and adjust it, it had to be replaced. The mower kept losing power and sounding very sick every time I used it even after replacing the carburetor. I was only cutting small patches of lawn that my riding mower couldn’t reach. I never had a problem like this with any of my previous mowers.

This year when I took it in to have it serviced for the beginning of the season. My mechanic called me and said the engine had no “juice” and there was nothing he could do to fix it. Now I had to buy another mower after only 3 seasons! When I called Briggs and Stratton customer service the manager Jeff told me he’d look into what they might be able to do for me and promised to call back in 24 hrs but of course when I hadn’t heard from him in over a week I called back. Of course he claimed he was just going to call me... He said there was little they could do for me unless I sent the engine to them and even then there was no guarantee.

Seriously that is your customer service...make the consumer pay to send you their faulty engine even though my mechanic who was certified by Briggs and Stratton to work on their engine said it was dead. Then when I asked for a corporate number he couldn’t give me one because supposedly even they don’t have a direct line. Sounds pretty fishy to me. My suggestion to anyone looking for a new lawnmower... DO NOT buy anyone that has a Briggs and Stratton engine in it because they are garbage and the company doesn’t stand behind its product!!

I bought a Toro model 20339 mower from Home Depot in March 2018. I should have looked at the one-star reviews more carefully because apparently a lot of people had issues with the engine in this model. The engine is a Briggs and Stratton (of course) and it stopped working after only about 5 months of use in August 2018. I took it to a Service Center and was told that a "rod broke through the engine block due to a lack of lubrication." The "lack of lubrication" is completely untrue. I put in enough oil to the required markings on the dipstick and checked frequently. (I have been mowing lawns for 30 years so I know what I am doing.) Anyway, Briggs and Stratton is not honoring their warranty for their defective product claiming that the consumer is at fault. (How convenient for them.) As difficult as it is, I will never buy another Toro, nor any other product that has a Briggs and Stratton engine. (Even though they pretty much have a monopoly.) Sigh.

I bought this can a couple of years ago and carried, perhaps, 10 cans of fuel. The spout dripped fuel whenever the can was used. The vapor reduction mechanism nearly required a second person to help open the mechanism so that the fuel would flow. Holding that spout open to dispense fuel requires it to be jammed against something in the receiving fuel spout while supporting at least part of the weight of the can. That pressure is enough to cause the spout to disconnect from the can spilling more fuel.

Thus, this silly, cheap plastic mechanism to reduce the escape of fumes is much more likely to be responsible for a major fuel spill. In this case, the spill ruined a $130 pair of New Balance 840 shoes. This can sells for about $16.00 but is worthless, much less. Let me say that more clearly, it's worthless. This piece of crappy plastic must be a source of great pride to the engineers that designed it. If designing crummy fuel cans loses it appeal, you can always move on to plastic flatware.

I bought a Toro lawnmower with a Briggs and Stratton engine at the end of May 2018 from Home Depot. It was a big purchase for me since this mower cost almost $400. I brought it home unpacked and assembled as directed in the owner’s manual. I was able to use this mower 4-5 times in my 2000 sq ft yard and it appeared to do a good job, however the last time I used the mower I was halfway done with my lawn, and the motor let out a loud snap and then stopped working. I did not run over anything, so I was not sure what had happened. I called Toro and explained the situation and I was instructed to bring the mower to an authorized dealer, so they can find out what was wrong with my 2-month-old mower.

I dropped off the mower in August 2018 and this is when the waiting game came into play, When I dropped it off at the repair company (Taft Equipment) I was told I would hear back from them within a week, so I patiently waited, when I didn’t hear back from them in the timeframe I was told I called to follow up on the issue (2 wks later). I was told that the motor was blown because the oil was low and there was a bolt broken inside the motor. I explained to the repairman that I did everything instructed such as adding the oil when I unpackaged the mower. The repair guy stated he would submit the warranty claim to B&S and we would have to wait on their response.

An additional 2 wks go by and I didn’t hear back from the repair shop, so I called them, and I was told they were still waiting to hear back from B&S and they were going to follow-up and get back to me. 1 wk later I received a call and my warranty claim was denied by B&S because the issue that occurred with my mower was not covered. I was instructed that I could dispute the claim, but it would come out of my pocket if I shipped the motor to B&S.

At this point I’m already into the piece of junk for around $500 because I have to pay the repair shop for their services since the claim was denied. Despite all the proper maintenance, the engine will not start. There is no excuse for a B&S engine with 4 hours of run time to fail other than the engine was defective. I know I will NEVER purchase or recommend any products with a B&S engine in the future. I wish I would have checked the reviews prior to buying this mower. Now I'm SOL. Thanks B&S.

I took it to a 'certified' B&S dealer who told me that it's not under warranty because the gasket dissolved and that was my fault. Bad gas, etc. BS is right. Never again. This series of engines should be recalled. There are obvious issues with it.

Every time I started it, it would idle, but no driving. Took it back to Sears, the guy there says, "Oh it may have old gas from the factory, and the carb needs repair"... NOT me so I left it there, went to Home Depot, picked up another tractor, again with the 19HP... Took it out for a drive for a teaching run on pavement. Then to my 2 ac. lot. About 45 minutes later. I've got two separate issues with two separate pieces of equipment. I bought a Yard Machines push mower three years ago after building my house. It worked perfectly the first summer/fall but I could not get the thing started at all the next two years. Last year as a last resort before throwing it away, I sprayed starter fluid into the filter intake. Surprisingly I finally got the thing started. I had to do this every time I wanted to use it. This Spring I tried to do the same thing and that won't even help.

Two years ago I bought a Troy Bilt pressure washer with the B&S engine. It worked fine the first year, but after bringing it out this past week to use it, I couldn't get it started. Even spraying starter fluid into the air intake wouldn't help. I firmly believe Briggs and Stratton engines are complete garbage. It took me a $700 lesson to learn this. I would highly recommend staying away from anything made by this company. A once great company has now been reduced to cheaply built crap with terrible customer service. Avoid at all costs!

Bought a mower from Lowe's and it ran fine for a couple months. Prepped it for winter and wouldn't start next summer. Water in the gas was to blame according to the repair guy (used same gas after waiting three weeks and it ran fine.) Third summer now here and will not start again. Can put a little gas in the fuel/air filter and it will run till the filter dries out. Won't start without doing so and once the filter is dry stops running. I bought this Murray lawnmower with Briggs & Stratton engine June 27th of last year. It was a big purchase for me, I wanted a self propelled this time so spent a lot more than I did ten years ago for $89. Because of this I empty out the gas and oil which I have NEVER done in the past. I put in fresh gas oil and new spark plug and it refuses to start. I called 2 dealers stating bad compression (since I could not call Briggs & Stratton from my cell phone the phone tree would not go thru no matter what I pushed) as my mechanic told me. They basically told me $35 to even look at it and pretty much I would be blamed and have to pay over a hundred dollars to fix it.

Being a single parent I thought no way this is crazy less than a year old. So I emailed the company and got a very quick response again blaming me. So now I am stuck with a piece of crap mower that does not work after less than a year. DO NOT BUY. They will not fix under warranty because it is always your fault no matter what you do.

    Reliability

I had always trusted B&S small mower engines to be reliable. In fact, I had a Quantum engine work well for about 17 years with NO major problems. Then, I had to replace that mower & bought a Murray mower with a B&S 125cc engine from the Walmart website, fully expecting similar quality & not bothering to check CURRENT reviews of B&S engines. BAD MISTAKE on my part. First off, the new B&S engine's oil port is inaccessible to pour the oil in without a funnel with a long extension hose because the oil port is squarely under & blocked by the engine housing. Next, since there is no drain plug underneath, the instructions say that you have to turn the mower upside down to drain the oil out the same oil port that you used to put it in, being careful not to flood the engine with gas while doing that.

WORST OF ALL, AFTER LESS THAN 9 HOURS OF USE AND PROPER STORAGE, THE THING WILL NOT START. This is the same complaint throughout the complaint websites that MANY users describe. B&S currently makes a shoddy, poor quality engine. I hope future potential customers are smarter than me and read these reviews BEFORE they spend good money on this PIECE OF JUNK.

A perfect example is a Troy-Bilt branded pressure washer I purchased from Lowe's. Despite all proper maintenance, the engine will not start. Sure B&S will pay to have it repaired as long as I go out of my way to take it some obscure repair shop. Insulting as that is, there is no excuse for a B&S engine with maybe ten minutes of run time to fail to start, other than the engine was built from inferior parts likely imported from some sweatshop in China. MTD mower w/ Briggs & Stratton 125cc OHV engine from Home Depot - Recently bought a new house with a small front and backyard (front is 50ft x 50 ft; back is 50ft x 100ft with another 25ft x 100ft dog run). Saw a special from Home Depot around Father's Day for MTD 20" push mower with B&S engine for $149. I had a similar mower years ago that I used for about 15 years that I bought from ACE hardware (it had the B&S 140cc engine) - it was a beast. I was trying to save a buck and again my yard is small and I didn't want to spend $300 on a mower – it literally takes 30 minutes to mow the whole thing and that's taking my time. Pulled the mower out of the box and assembled it and used the supplied oil. I saw in the booklet that gas with more than 10 percent ethanol should not be used.

I went and bought Shell premium gas which had less than 7 percent ethanol. Mower started on the first pull and mowed my yard. I bought my mower on May 19, 2017 and used it then, I then mowed the next 7-8 consecutive weeks, either on a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning with no problems. The booklet said I should change out the oil after the first 10 hours of usage. Approximately the 8-9 time I go use the mower, it would not start. I hit up the B&S website for troubleshooting and YouTube, I follow the B&S instructions – clean the air filter (not particularly dirty), disassemble the carburetor, clear the fuel line, flush the gas tank, the whole works. Mower starts with starting fluid, but will not run.

I do the whole troubleshooting routine again, including replacing the spark plug and changing oil. Nothing nada, will attempt to start with carb cleaner. Carburetor and fuel lines are clean enough to use for mother's milk – nothing. Of course, I bought Home Depot's 2 year warranty, so when I bring this thing back to Home Depot, they tell me I must contact MTD to go through their warranty first since 30 days had lapsed since I purchased the mower.

MTD refers me there local servicer, which is literally the only one within 100 mile radius of where I live. It is now October 15 and the Servicer (Maurer's Repair) has had this thing for almost 8 weeks, with the mantra "it'll be ready next Thursday for the last 3 Thursday's in a row." My mistake was not checking the reviews on Home Depot and sites like this.

Obviously, B&S has a faulty product with their current and plastic OHV small engines. Also disappointed in Home Depot, they obviously know this is a crap product, but he continue to sell it and give customers the runaround about it. Really sad to try and buy an American product and it ends up being something like this. It's embarrassing, not to me, but to B&S and Home Depot. You both lost my confidence.

While I appreciate SAS providing financing, the rest of this experience has been less than professional. When the mower arrived the only paper work I received was an extra key on a placard and instruction book. There were no receipts for purchase or warranties. One delivery man showed me how to turn it on, then start mower blades, and reverse. Then they left.

In August it stopped working after just THREE MONTHS! A dead battery $62 plus pick up and delivery Again (after just servicing it). It is not even 6 months used! I expressed my frustration and their rep said, "Oh they sit around and get stale/die all the time." However, again in October (2 months) it stops working this time the price is $191.15! Oh it is the little PLASTIC PLUG for the oil. Apparently this also "breaks all the time" and causes oil to spray everywhere and deplete the engine!!! Thank God it is now winter. I can stop thinking about mower!

Now Feb 2016 arrives. My mower is kept covered/protected at all times, when not in use. But it would not start when I began my spring in March. I am NOT "MS Mechanic" and have no desire to be but I expect to get what I pay for. I AM still making regular timely payments ($118.63) on mower. Mower comes back and works The price $177.86!! In September I have to file a Chapter 13, due in part to having to PAY TWICE A MONTH for a crap mower.

Now in 2017, JANUARY it will not start and I call Cadet. It is another $70, then again on April 27, 2017 repairs for $149.05. On MAY $149.23, on June 1, $62.00 on The front wheel fell off WHILE I WAS RIDING IT!! On July 21 THE WHEEL FALLS OFF AGAIN SAME ONE!!! I have it serviced again because I want to get rid of it, Comes back with new blades and belt and wheel on (for how long, who knows) COST is now $225.75!! It is returned on July 29 On August 4 I am trying catch up on all the delayed mowing when it starts shuddering, then a thumping noise, then a spark out from under hood and I go to turn off but it stops while I am jumping off!!!

Today it is still sitting in that very spot, with a tarp on it, like a death shroud... I have talked to escalation with Husqvarna, talked to Briggs and Stratton and now I read all the horror stories! Yes A CLASS ACTION SUIT IS DEFINITELY IN ORDER HERE! Grand Total of payments(not counting court payments) is $1923.56

I bought a new engine that was supposed to bolt right in exactly how the original Briggs & Stratton engine did on my huskee wood splitter... of course when I bolted it on, it didn't fit. I had to call the tractor supply store where I ordered it from, they referred me to the "SpeeCo" company where they ordered it from, & they of course referred me to Briggs & Stratton customer support... who told me I would have to cut & modify the engine mounting plate to make this engine fit, which was supposed to be a direct bolt on replacement in the 1st place.

After I fabricated the mounting plate, I bolted it on, & got back to work, after 2 hours of use, the muffler fell off despite the fact that the 2 bolts that held it on, had bolt head keepers on them, I fixed that, only to have further problems as the weather got colder, this engine will not start or stay running unless I sit there repetitively pushing the primer bulb on the carburetor... I will not run unless I do so... now after about 10 hours of use, the tin cover on top of the engine that holds the pull start rope recoil to the top of the engine, is now cracked around its mounting bolts, & will not work to start the engine.

After making calls to the store, then the distribution company, then Briggs & Stratton, they tell me that they don't know why this is happening, even though I've found many other people on social media who have had, or are currently having the same exact issues. The people at Briggs & Stratton told me they couldn't do anything for me, unless I wanted to buy a new different carburetor that has a manual choke on it, & a new different style gas tank that would allow the operation of the choke, & buy a new tin engine cover with a rope recoil built in, that won't be any better or different from the one that has already failed on this brand new engine.

There was a hole in my engine. Oil was everywhere. The oil was all over the tractor, my left leg, my shoe, and my pants along with the floor. I called the service desk and was informed to bring in the tractor into the store. I had no clue that I had a problem. The tractor ran as well as it did the other times I cut the grass.

After several calls to the service center and much frustration, I will pick up my tractor from the Schererville, IN store soon. I talked to Husqvarna directly after being told to call them by the manager of garden center in Schererville, IN. I was told by Husqvarna that if there is a hole in the engine, I should call Briggs & Stratton directly. I did speak to Briggs and Stratton about my problem. I was asked why the tractor was sent to the service center for Lowe's instead of the service center authorized for Briggs and Stratton. That is a very good question! I received a message on 12/05/2016 saying the tractor was in the store. I will now pick up my tractor and try to get it to an authorized dealer for Briggs and Stratton.

Forty-one days after I dropped off my tractor, it has not been repaired. I would have to pay $1350.40 to have it fixed. I was told that my tractor was low on oil. As much oil that was on my floor, leg, shoes, pants, and the tractor itself it makes it hard to believe. It seems to me that if Lowe's employees knew where to send items for repair, my tractor would not be gone for forty-one days. I will never shop at Lowe's again. I am hoping that Briggs and Stratton can give me some answers about my engine failure.

Brought a Brand New Yard Machine, the engine is by Briggs and Stratton. Got this lawn mover at Home Depot this past June of 2016. Did what was required for me to do after opening the box and putting it together. Pour the bag of Oil that came with into the machine, put new gas as well. Started it up, it made some noise that I was use in hearing out of a new lawn mover. Took it back and got another one, it did the same thing and took it back to home depot just well. They inform me that it was nothing wrong with it and it make this noise. Use it about once a week if that much.

Just this past September, Check everything and had to add some more oil to it. Did not understand that part in why. Added the oil until the dip stick showed full (The first hole from the top of the dip stick), While cutting this yard, I was just about finish when I heard a noise and saw all the oil coming out on the side of the engine. Didn't hit anything (always walk the yard to make sure nothing was in the yard or cause any harm to my mover). I look at it and said what the Hell, took it back to home depot and they told me that I had to control Briggs and Stratton. Did that and took it to the shop they referral me to take it to.

After a month, They inform me that it was not enough oil and I ask him, "Why did the dip stick said it was and you are telling me that it was not?" He could not answer that. Anyway, Briggs and Stratton contacted me this past week and said it was not warranty and it was denied. I spoke with other people and they inform that they had the same problem with Briggs and Stratton engine and showed me picture of the same things. This is what you call a Big Rip off on Consumer. I paid over $200.00 for it and you are telling me that I am out of pocket on this. Please Consumer buyers, Please Do Not buy any more Briggs and Stratton engine when they Do Not stand up to their Warranty.

Craftsman mower with Briggs & Stratton engine, bought brand new just before summer this year. Used it two times, all of a sudden it won't start anymore. Tried new gas, sprayed carb with carb choke, spark plug looks like new, but it just won't start. I've had a McLane edger over twenty years, never serviced, still starts (could use some servicing, but it still starts). I can't say one good thing about Briggs & Stratton anymore. The off-brand mower I got from Home Depot about 10 years ago still ran fine but I gave it to a friend when I bought this one. Big mistake. Seems like lawnmowers are no longer the dependable workhorses they used to be, now they're just high-maintenance pieces of junk. I'll never go with B&S again.

Bought and OEM replacement carburetor for my push mower, P/N 799868. Came in Briggs & Stratton OEM parts box. Carburetor does is not usable. The air cleaner flange was ground down using an extremely coarse circular grinder leaving a grooved finish that does not seal properly with the thin fiber air cleaner housing gasket.

To make matters worse, the carburetor was obviously dumped into a box of other parts during manufacturing that severely dinged up the intake manifold flange and the air cleaner flange, making properly sealed mating on the air cleaner side impossible without lapping and burnishing the deep grooves and dings out of the flange. I could do this but the complete deal breaker is the primer port on the air cleaner flange does not line up properly with the primer port hole in the gasket (tested three different gaskets from several OEM parts sources) and as a consequence cannot line up correctly with the ridged primer groove in the air cleaner housing. Enlarging the hole in the gasket will not work as it would allow leakage from the ridged primer groove in the air cleaner housing (it would be outside the ridged groove).

Result: carburetor cannot be primed using the air cleaner priming bulb and engine requires about 15 minutes of continuous pulling on the starting rope to start as engine and air cleaner CANNOT be choked after which one's arm and shoulder is sore for a week afterward. The root cause? Briggs & Stratton is now having their OEM repair parts made in CHINA with ZERO quality control. I'm hoping now that I can keep the current carburetor working until I can find an acceptable replacement or get Briggs & Stratton to send me a properly manufactured carburetor. In the meantime my lawn continues to grow relentlessly.

They contacted your Cheshire branch sending photos of the damage and your Sam ** concluded that the repair cannot be done on warranty. I have studied the 11 situations in which the warranty does not apply and none of those apply.

Now, I have done nothing wrong, have never done anything other than run the machine yet I'm the one left with the bill of more than 300. Mr. ** offered to look at the engine if we could send it to him at my expense (50 plus). He says that in addition to scoring of the piston and cylinder the bearings also show damage. I don't think it worth the gamble of sending it to Cheshire. So what am I THE INNOCENT PARTY to do? It is obviously wrong for both yourselves and BATA to refuse responsibility when one of you is clearly at fault.

Very disappointed about Briggs Stratton's customer service and their new products. Got a normal gas push mower at Home Depot a year ago. Used it 2x and it would not start. Took it a licensed repair shop (Rogers Engine in West Palm Beach) who charged for oil, spark plug and air filter, because it was not covered under warranty...after only having the mower 6 months!! It worked again for 2 times and again would not start. Took it in again and was told that the ethanol gasoline damages the carburetor which needs to be cleaned and again that is not covered.

I called Briggs Stratton to ask that they pay for this one repair and then I would sell the mower and not ever bother them again. The "product specialist" came back to me with the offer to split the bill!!! Really? A company like Briggs and Stratton producing a crappy cheap product, not putting a warning right on the gas cap about not using ethanol gasoline and then not even covering damages under the warranty. I will NEVER buy a product from them again.

I purchased an Ariens 42" riding mower from Home Depot in May of 2014. This mower came with a Briggs and Stratton 19hp model 330000 Intek "Extended Life Series" motor. Specifically, 33r877 0009 is the motor number, which carries a 2 yr warranty. It ran fine in both 2014 and 2015 mowing seasons and between seasons, the mower was stored according to the manufacturers instructions. It was maintained also per manufacturers instructions, including using only Briggs and Stratton oil, oil filter, gas filter, air cleaner and spark plug.

I live in central Missouri, so the mowing season generally spans from early to mid May, (mowing once per week thru July) to late August, only mowing 2 to 3 times that month due to the heat and little rain, with maybe one more need to mow mid to late September before storing it for the winter. This is when I performed the maintenance, ie oil change, etc. The mower was only used approx. 16 hrs per season. About mid June of this year I noticed a little bit of white smoke from the exhaust. I took it to Henderson Implement here in Columbia, and their diagnosis was the engine was "not repairable". Matt, the mechanic said "it looks like an older motor" and "that the head gasket was blown and had severe scoring on the cylinder walls". This motor has less 50 hrs on it!!!

Of course, the warranty was out by 2 months. But, I'd never expect the motor to be non repairable. I have a push mower with a Briggs and Stratton 6.75hp motor purchased from Menards. I took it last year to LEE'S tractor for some carb work, but was told that they won't service that particular motor due to its high instance of break downs. I see several other similar complaints on this site as well as other consumer websites. It's no wonder Briggs and Stratton doesn't participate in consumer affairs. Shame on you B and S. You were the reason I purchased the mowers.

UPDATE! Just want to let you all know Briggs did resolve my engine problems by giving me a new engine. I had posted back in May about an engine that would not start after shutting it off for about ten minutes. After local authorized dealer (The Toro Store in Moline, Illinois) told me I had run it low on oil and Briggs would not cover repair I was not happy. Always check my oil before starting to mow and there were no leaks. Contacted Briggs and started a 2-month process to get a new motor. DO NOT trust the word of your local authorized dealer. They wanted to repair my engine for $150! Turned out a valve was sticking open so I had no compression, nothing to do with low oil. Briggs shipped a new motor (to the same dealer) but I picked it up in the box and installed it myself.

Bought this mower because it was American made with 2 year warranty. LOL Just 2 weeks before warranty was expired mower wouldn't start after shutting it off. Took it to nearest authorized dealer to have it looked at. Only mowed about 4-5 times after spring tune-up and oil change. Takes about 50 minutes to mow my yard. Dealer said it was run low on oil and scored the motor. Briggs and Stratton won't cover repairs. I tried to contact Briggs but so far to no avail. This is impossible as I check the oil every time before operating and I asked the dealer how much oil was in it when they tore it apart, it was full... so I filled it after I blew the motor? WRONG!!! The block has very little scoring in it if you ask me but I brought it home in pieces I will buy another mower with a Honda motor if Briggs refuses to fix this. I'm a Union man and want the American worker to have jobs but I won't be ripped off by corporate America!!

I bought a used Craftsman mower from my uncle last year. I'm not sure how old it is, maybe 2 or 3 years. It's got the 24-horse Intek 2-cylinder. At $400, I thought we got a fantastic deal. It worked great all last year. This year, I noticed an oil spot in the garage. While mowing with it, I noticed smoke coming from the front end once in a while. Thought I traced it to the oil filter, so I bought a new one. After cleaning, I noticed oil running down the side of the engine. From what I've been reading, the sump gaskets on these are junk. So now I'm stuck, can't use my mower, can't afford to fix it, and I'm sure a warranty is out of the question. I always thought Briggs and Stratton was the best you could buy. Now it looks like I'll be looking for a Honda motor to drop in it.

I purchased a brand new Toro mower in May of 2012. It had a 2 year warranty which took it through may of 2014. It always started on the first pull. I loved this mower. I always checked the oil, changed it each year, and replaced filter and spark plug. I use fuel stabilizer in every tank. I am a farm boy and engineer, so I know how to take care of my engines. However this spring I went to start it and it would not fire. Checked spark... good. Fuel in tank. Tried with starting fluid... would not even fire. So I suspected a compression problem... maybe a stuck valve.

Took it to dealer, they claimed it had been run low on oil... cylinder was scored and valve guide was seized up. I took the mower home without repair since they wanted $400 for the repair... new block. The cylinder looks perfect to me. I am very disappointed in my purchase of a mower with a Briggs engine. I'll be looking for a mower with a non-Briggs engine this time around. If Briggs will step up and cover this repair, that would restore my faith in them.

Got a repairman that lives over a hundred miles from me close to Petal, MS. He tells me that the bolts that hold up the charging system was not torqued enough and they came loose and dropped down into the flywheel and ruined it. Now B&S sends a flywheel and fan out that don't even fit the engine. Come to find out they don't even make that part anymore so now they send something out to the repairman that he has to rig up in the shop to make it fit. Been a month, I need a mower and no hope in sight. B&S owes me a motor. Tomorrow I'm going back to Home Depot and if I don't get any results I will be filing a small claims court case against all concerned.

It was maintained and serviced by the dealer and fully up to date with oil levels, etc. Regarding the Engine 31E607 that we have looked into here are our findings: Engine Failure is allegedly due to damaged bearing surfaces on the piston/cylinder, the lower thrust face of the crank sump bearing, the lower avs link eccentric bearing, the Camshaft journals. B&S are refusing to replace/repair under warranty on an engine that has done less than a year’s work and was fully serviced, etc. So much for the 2-year engine warranty they claim to provide.

The engine from Briggs and Stratton had a problem with the oil drain plugs coming loose. The engine has 2 oil drain plugs depending on the application would be the deciding factor on what oil drain plug you will use, the one that is not accessible will come loose over time from vibration and heavy use. That's what happened to us, the oil dumped out in seconds and the engine seized. Briggs had since made a fix on the plugs but they did not make good for the engine. He ran another 3.4 hours on it and it blew up and had a block man come to a dealer and told them that it was an oil issue. Yes it was an oil issue. He also stated it was overhauled. I said I took it out of the Briggs box which was sealed. Took out, put my parts on the short block mounted on rider. I put the required amount of oil in it and sent it out my door.

I am a certified small engine mechanic with a diploma. He told the dealer it was overhauled. It had a 12 horse oil pan gasket plus about 1/2 tube of sealant on it. He stated that Briggs do not use liquid gasket that don't have it on the assembly line. Even I still am required to pay for a dead horse. OK. A couple of days after I wrote this review (and before the review was posted on this site), I was contacted by my local Ariens dealer where I'd taken the snowblower for diagnosis. After being denied by Briggs, the dealer contacted Ariens Corporate here in the US, and Ariens contacted Briggs. Briggs is now going to send a replacement engine block to swap for the cracked block, and they are covering the labor on the work. So, thank you Ariens, and Briggs as well, I suppose. Certainly a good reason to give Ariens a great review. After all, they've facilitated a warranty replacement on a product that they really don't even manufacture!

    Original Review: Nov. 21, 2014

Ariens snow blower with Briggs and Stratton Polar Force engine with at most ten hours of use. Well within warranty period. Oil leak, turns out to be a cracked engine block. Warranty denied. Started leaking oil where the drain tube runs into the block. Snugged it up a bit, good to go. Started leaking again, so used high temp thread sealer to seal. Still leaking from what I thought was the threads where the oil drain pipe came out. Drained oil, pulled tube, used Teflon tape, snugged up again. Nope, still leaking.

Took it to the local Ariens dealer - diagnosis: cracked block, warranty denied, nearly $600.00 quoted to repair. I paid 1800 for the blower, used it two seasons, MAYBE ten hours total (NW Missouri, not a whole lot of snow here). Changed oil at the end of each season. Good grief. I'm going to try some epoxy putty to repair. Do you know how much confidence Ariens has in Briggs motors? THEY'VE QUIT USING THEM ON ANYTHING SINCE I BOUGHT THE BLOWER. Nice. Thank you Briggs. Never again.

After assembly I filled crankcase with oil and tank with gas. Engine started immediately and I was very impressed. I started thinking wow these guys have come along way. I chipped up some twigs and small branches. After some playing I found a larger branch and fed it into the chipper. This made the engine work and nice chips came flowing out. I was quite happy with my purchase. Seconds later the engine stopped dead. My days of chipping were over.

The engine was seized up. Cut to the chase I bring in the chipper for warranty repair where it was deemed insufficient oil which caused the failure. Really? No argument, no contact number, just here's your motor and you owe us 35.00 for diagnostics. I get the motor back in pieces. For fun let's say I didn't put in enough oil (which I certainly did) how can Briggs send out a motor missing a 35 cent low oil sensor? Because they are cheap. I returned the chipper to Home Depot for a full refund so Briggs ate that one. I will never own another Briggs for the rest of my life. They are deceitful. Think not? Started no problem. Ran it for 3 summers without changing the oil, and leaving the gas in it through the winter. It sometimes took a few extra pulls to start but when I took it out this year all it took was one pull to start (with the old gas in it). I just changed the oil couple months ago and she runs great. The carburetor is a simple but perfect design that never has problems, unlike my Tecumseh engine carbs. But hey, it's older than me and back in those days things were built here, made from good quality material unlike nowadays everything is made in China from poor quality materials and designed to fail. The type number is 0244 E1. I am a professional mechanic and have performed the required tests and examination and determined that the engine is unserviceable due to this engineering problem. I would never have bought this machine if I even suspected that this kind of problem existed. On top of all this, the sump gasket leaks which is also a systematic issue with this engine. Apparently if you went to a Briggs and Stratton dealer within the first year of your ownership you were able to get some assistance. However, this particular machine has very low hours of operation, 210 hours of actual operation, even though it was produced in 2004.

The response that I got from Briggs and Stratton was as follows: "We will not be providing any compensation for this engine." I would have been satisfied if they had offered to provide the upgraded, reengineered air filter design. Since they will not provide anything, I am not able to even consider repairing the engine since it will still have this engineering problem that allows the unfiltered air to bypass the air filter. I suspect that faced with this, I will have to either buy a completely new garden tractor with an engine that works or redesign the current tractor to accept an engine from another manufacturer which honors their warranty and provides support for their products.

I ordered my McLane Reel Mower on March 10, 2013 and received several days later - shipping was $100.00. Went through the normal setup process. My neighbor and I put it together, filled it with 30 SAE oil, and I mowed and it did great. I went to mow the following weekend and it fell apart. Something came loose in the engine and was clanging around on the inside. So I called McLane which they called their Briggs and Stratton rep who then called a rep in the Charlotte, NC area. This jerk called me and all but accused me of not putting oil in the engine. He asked how many ounces did I put in the case and did I use the oil that came with the mower and other questions that implying this was my fault.

I took the mower to a top dealer and repair for B&S, and it turns out that the crank shaft fell out of the mower. From consumer reports, I am not the only one this has happened to. Also, the BBB website there is a warning pertaining to B&S that they are in bankruptcy and have been since 2006. I guess that explains a lot. My point is today it is I took my mower to the repair shop on April 2, 2013... Today is May 28, 2013 and I still don't have my mower. It has been almost 2 months for the shop waiting on B&S to send the shop a crank shaft.

My point here is DO NOT BY AMERICAN PRODUCTS from McLane, or Briggs & Stratton, or other American companies. If you have an issue, you are on your own!!! Note: You are stuck!!! If they figure out it is a warranty issue, then GOD forbid when you will see your mower. My point is if you purchase a product and it is under warranty and no fault of your own, I think we all would expect if the company really gives a crap would not rest until the product was repaired. But that is not the case at all.

On October 28th, 2011, I purchased an Ariens snow thrower from a local retailer for over $800. After last winter, I prepped it or storage exactly as the manual states. This fall I put fresh gas in and it leaked out. The service manager said Briggs and Stratton will not warranty their engines if it is fuel related, regardless of the manual. My machine has a 2 year full warranty. I am paying $40 for pickup and delivery and another $200 to replace the defective carburetor. Briggs and Stratton has refused to even discuss this issue, saying that the government mandated fuel additives are eating away at the seals. I'm not quite sure what control I have over that, but the bottom line is: B&S will not warranty their defective products.

I purchased the 3-in-1 Push lawnmower on 05/25/12. I have used it less than a dozen times. On the day the engine went out, I checked for oil and gas. I made sure the lawnmower had both. I started to use the lawnmower, then I heard a boom and saw smoke come up from the engine. I noticed a hole in the side of the engine. I called Briggs & Stratton Customer Service department and they directed me to a service center that would look over the lawnmower. A few days later, the service department called me and said the lawnmower broke because it had no oil in it? My response was as follows: "Are you kidding me? The lawnmower leaked oil all over the garage for 2 days. That was one of the reasons we had it picked up from the service department. I didn't want it leaking all over my truck." I did contact Briggs & Stratton prior to the findings. I have the emails.

The facts: out of warranty, date of purchase was 08/20/09, and the engine time of 174.6 hours as noted on the lawn tractor meter. The product is a Sears Professional 42" Model 44M700. I have a half acre lot and I take exacting care of my equipment. My 24hp V-Twin was running as expected and then would not idle. I shut it off and restarted. The engine RPM went higher than normal and the throttle had no response. Due to the fact that I was in a start situation, I shut it off immediately and checked the throttle linkage. The linkage was good and when I checked its movement, the adjustment was perfect as shown by the choke position.

The throttle was not the problem. I did some online research and found the answer might be the governor. I contacted the Briggs customer service office online (great for documentation) and waited. I live about three miles from the factory. Maybe I should have walked in the door. The first response: If the linkage for the carburetor and the governor is intact, then I would disassemble the engine to check the governor shaft and gear. If the shaft has broken, then that will cause the issue that you are having. Once you have checked this out, we can go from there. The key words were “then I would” and “we can go”.

The short of it is, I disassembled the engine per factory recommendation and the governor gear assembly was in pieces. We have been back and forth. I have sent pictures and the comeback was: the issue that you are having definitely looks to be due (his words) to something failing in the governor gear assembly. The marks on the shaft make it appear that it got hot and may have caused it to fail. I would have a dealer take a look at it to fully determine the cause.

My response was the shaft is what you are giving me; my anger coming out. I told him I was not going to haul the block anywhere. I ordered the parts and when I am done, I will have a great time using the social media. I have all of the back and forth mail and many pictures to prove my point. Warranties protect the companies, this I understand but 174.6 hours on a Briggs and Stratton Premium Engine? No wonder Kohler and several imported small engines have such a great reputation. Customer dis-service be damned.

Briggs and Stratton doesn't stand by their warranty: I purchased a Yard Machine mower from Home Depot with a B&S engine in October 2011. After using it twice, I stored it for the winter. I pulled it back out in Spring 2012, checked fluids, and started it up. After two passes, a huge bang and oil poured out all in my yard (So yes, there was plenty of oil in it.). There were numerous phone calls and lots of runaround. I finally was told to take it to a local facility for B&S to come see if the repair was under warranty (which took forever). It's a huge hole in the block. I was told it was my fault. There's no warranty coverage.

I was told I could dispute the decision by boxing up all the pieces and sending it to B&S for further review. Are you kidding? You already screwed me out of a $200 mower and $50 at the repair facility to tell me they had to wait for the B&S rep to look at it and I had to buy another mower. It will be a cold day in hell before I purchase another B&S product.

I did so, replaced the fuel with 93, drained the tank, new air filter and still it will not run past primer. Neither Troy nor Briggs will own up to defective carburetor as they put all the blame on the consumer's back. When you follow maintenance, start up, care instructions to the letter, and the unit fails, why does the manufacturer have the right to say, "sorry, it is your problem," and get away with it? The prices we pay for these items should operate for several years. Yes, I know things wear out, but on the 3rd season of cutting grass? Come on, man! Whatever happened to product dependability? The lawnmowers each lasted about a year and it cost more to repair than to buy a new one, so that was my action each time. The third lawnmower had a non-B&S engine that is still running several years later. It was purchased in July, used once for about two hours to clean the deck, stored with the fuel tank empty (I ran it out of gas to prevent fuel issues later) and then when I tried to start it again in November of the same year, it would not start. The dealer charged me for a repair to the carburetor diaphragm. It ran for a couple of hours and stored again. After that, the cord would not pull out more than a foot or so. The same problem was the diaphragm and I decided that was enough B&S **. Never again will I buy a B&S product and it appears that I am not alone! From my own research, I have found that stale fuel cannot damage a carburetor to the extent that it needs replacement within a ten-minute use period. Leaving the machine to sit for five weeks may have resulted in stale fuel but the fuel I put into my chipper was not stale as I used the same can of fuel for my 10-year old tractor and 8-year old leaf blower--and both are functioning just fine! So how is it that the same fuel ruined a brand new chipper in ten minutes? They refuse to honor the warranty and want $120 to replace the carburetor that was defective when I purchased it.

My engine was considered out of warranty back to 2007 instead of 2010. They also didn't want to warranty because we used the mower to do some commercial cutting and the mower is not considered a "commercial" mower even though it is the same mower as the "Pro" model except the Pro has a Kohler engine. That's two engines, two dropped valves, 250 hours or less on both. Apparently, that is all a Briggs is expected to last. If they are not for commercial use, they shouldn't have commercial on them.

I put more gas in it and the pull cord will not pull out further than perhaps a foot. I take it to a hardware store to look at it to tell me what the problem is and they say the motor seized. I take it to a warranty dealer and explain that's impossible it was full of oil before I ran it. After a month of calling the warranty center and the company they finally discovered the motor seized because the carbon ring collapsed causing it to go through all the oil and so seizing the engine. The warranty center gave me a new engine. I then stored it for the winter. This summer of 2008 I pull it out of storage again fill it with fluids and it won't start it won't roll over at all. I go back to the hardware store and they say the carborator needed to be cleaned also it needed a new spark plug, new air filter and a new air filter gasket $60 parts and labor. I take it home get it started and there is no water pressure, the outlet pipe on the pump under the motor has an inch long crack in it. I order a new pipe from Briggs and Stratton online $20. I put it together and it finally runs with good water pressure. It runs for 10-15 minutes and then I heard a metal sound and looked to see the unit was smoking under the motor above the pump with a burning rubber smell. It still has oil and fluids in it. I take it a part to look at the unit and see nothing wrong or obviously out of place. I put it back together and start it again. It runs with no smoking or burning rubber smell but there is now no longer any water pressure. Now there is also a leak in the seal on one of the pipes on the pump itself. The manual says uneven or no pressure is a faulty pump. I went to Tractor Supply today (where the unit was purchased from) and asked the man working to how much a new pump would be. He looks it up and tells me $275.55 plus shipping cost to send it to the store. Briggsandstratton.com does not have a contact center for problems or complaints. I'm frustrated and very upset that a unit that was ran perhaps 2 hours in it's 2 year life span has to be entirely replaced. I purchased a new Massey Ferguson Lawn Tractor Model#2718H-50 M#356777-0113E1 on 8/8/2003.

Recently, 9/11/2006, the motor would not start or run. My Dealer Sosler's Garden & Farm Equipment Tele#845 374-3621 was contacted and they picked up the tractor to service.

Their findings were a cylinder head required replacing due to an overheating condition caused by nesting & debris within the engines cooling fins. Repairs were made at a cost of $529.97.

The air cooling system was cleaned on a regular basis; however when they disassembled the blower housing additional nesting & debris was found. This was not visual to the eye until the housing was taken apart. Something that a regular consumer is not readily capable of performing.

The nesting occurs when small animals (mice or chipmunks) entered silver dollar size holes built in the rear of the air cleaner body and then work their way into the rubber air intake into the engines air cooling system.

I contacted Briggs & Stratton to complain about the design flaw and apply for both financial relief, remedy to prevent further nesting damage.

Sosler Dealer recommended either exterminating the critters or parking the tractor in our garage instead of the shed. We live in the country, so exterminating is not a guarantee for all rodents that live within the area. The garage could also have mice there too! What next my living room to park the tractor!

A wire shield placed over the air cleaner body holes would prevent the entry, however no one wants to address that issue as it may lead to design flaw issues.

Soslers stated they were unsure if any wire mesh would slow the air flow thus increasing the motors temperature. So they would be reluctant to install such without authorization from Briggs & Stratton.

Briggs & Stratton issued a letter, on 9/22/06, stating The holes in the air cleaner base are designed to allow air into the air cleaner cartridge. It is a sealed assembly. There is no pathway from the air cleaner to the cooling fins and cylinder head, for the rodents to travel. The area that was affected was restricted with debris and nesting material and this caused the engine to overheat.

The engine is designed to have a certain clearance for air flow to travel under the blower housing/shroud and above the cooling fins so that the heat can be disbursed through the air currents. The repairs were warranted and necessary.

Sosler's stated that the letter was faulty in that the rodents could in fact travel from the air filter into the engine cooling fins for nesting. However, since Briggs & Stratton stated in the closing of their letter The repairs were warranted and necessary., That authorized Sosler's to make the repairs, but that it was warranted work to be performed not warranty work, so I would be responsible and the matter closed.

I now mow the lawn, wondering each time if there is any nesting debris hidden behind the blow housing which will again cause overheating and damage. There are no gauges on the tractor to let the owner know if an overheating problem exists. Disassembling the blower housing would take 1-2 hours each time, which is not a process designed for the normal homeowner.

The owners manual has a statement for the Air Cooling System Debris may clog the engines air cooling system. Remove blower housing and clean area shown to prevent overheating and engine damage. No instructions on how to disassemble the blower housing to comply. Brief but the needed relief from responsibility for Briggs & Stratton?

We did a oil change and changed the air filter. Still smoked. Took the heads off and realized that the heads had a lot , a lot of carbon built up on them.

Had the heads cleaned and now I find out that Briggs and Stratton motors are known for this problem. Dacus Rentals in Searcy looked at the heads and valves and said that this was not my problem. The way the mower is built for the air filter is the problem. They have 5 engines sitting in a corner waiting for a Briggs and Stratton Rep. to come and look at them. The filter doesn't stop the dust and dirt from getting into the engine like it is suppose to. They told me that basically I was out of luck that my engine is gone.

I was going to have a valve job done on it and found that I'm not the only one with this problem. Coast to Coast has ran into this problem, the guy at a garage that does valve grinding was working on another one, the day I took mine in. If this is such a problem with the way the mower is built why should I have to throw away $3500.00, because Briggs and Stratton aren't living up to their name? Apparently this is a major problem. I want a new engine for my mower or for rather have them buy it back so I can get a good engine.

It took us 5 years to get our yard in shape to be able to use a riding mower. We have 1 1/2 acres and neither one of us can push mow any more. He needs a knee replacement and I have bad knees. We can't afford to go out and buy another riding mower for 3 or 4 grand every two years.

I purchased a huskee lawnmower from Tractor Supply Company with a Briggs and Stratton engine in it in 2001. Three years later it would not start. The authorized briggs and stratton dealer said a valve was stuck and allowing oil to transfer from the crankcase to the carburator therefore losing lubrication for the engine. I had the dealer call a B & G rep in Columbus Ohio and he said he it was not their fault. Now how is it my fault that it happened. I take care of my equipment and even wax my lawnmower. The engine is not made anymore due to emission standards. It will cost me $1000 to repair the engine. I want action from B & G to help me out.

I own a Briggs & Stratton Pressure Washer and I've had problems with the Pump unit on it. I've had the machine for about 1 1/2 - 2 years before the problem showed up. The pressure side of the pump blew up from a manufacturers defect. I contacted B&S to see what they could do since it's not on a piece of the machine that requires owner servicing.

At first I was told that since the machine was out of warranty, they could not do anything about it. I told them that it was a manufacturers defect and the young lady I spoke to said there was nothing I could do. I aksed to speak to a Customer service representative and was told that there was nothing a supervisor could do for me. I insisted on being put through and the young lady told me that maybe they could pay half of the repair cost and I would pay the other half. I told her that that was unacceptable and again requested to talk to a Customer Service representative. IT did not happen.

NExt day I called again and I requested an email to which I could send pictures of the damage on the machine (bolts broken off at the head and the pressure radiator separated from the pump)and was finally given an email. I called after sending them the pictures to verify that they were received and was put in touch with Mark Meyers (Customer Service). He told me that I was correct and the damage was called a Dead Head. He also told me that the young lady had no right to tell me that B&S would pay half and I would pay the other half.He told me to take my machine to the nearest dealer and have him order the pump for me.

I went to the dealer and he ordered the pump. A Month later (July), I get called by the dealer telling me that the pressure washer is ready for pick-up. I picked up the unit and went home to try it out. When the unit ws turned on, I found a pressure relief valve missing from the pump and it poured water out all over the place. I called Mark and told him that the pump they sent me had no pressure relief valve on it and he assured me one would be sent to me the next day.

I received the valve and installed it. The unit worked fine for 2 uses and the pump again broke but this time at the oil sump side (not an area that requires owners maintenance). I called Mark one more time to let him know and he tells me that there's a defect on the pump from the pump dealer itself. They supposedly were using the wrong size bolt on the pump but had corrected the problem and that he would send me a new pump for me to install. This 2nd call took place on the 7th of november.

I called Mark to verify that he had sent the pump as he told me he would since he said they had some in stock. The pump was not sent the following week so I asked to talk to Mark's Supervisor, Amy. Amy told me that they would send me the pump the 2nd week after I called. Since the pump did not arrive that week, I called Amy again to verify shipment. I told her that since they had not shipped the pump, I would package my unit and send it to her and Mark Insured so that they could repair it for me. She told me not to send her the unit that she would send me a new and up-graded unit. I called her yesterday to verify shipment of the new unit and was told that the unit had left B&S in Wisconsin on the 3rd of December but she could not give me a tracking number. I asked her to get me a tracking number and she said she would go down to shipping and see about getting me a tracking number and she would call me back in an hour. At this time, she has not called me and when I call her, it's Long Distance.

I have been lied to several times by the fols at B&S and some of their clerks do not want to listen to what you have to say. I called once to find out who Amy's supervisor was and the lady I spoke to was very belligerent. I asked for the supervisor and she tells me that she will put me through to Amy's Voice Mail. I asked again for her supervisor and this clerk just put me on hold and unto Amy's voice Mail. Is this the way to treat Customers by blowing them off? B&S has lost a customer here. I used to buy from B&S but now I'll go elsewhere for garden/house cleaning equipment. 0945 AM, Just got off the phone with Amy. She tells me that the order has not shipped out yet as she told me it did yesterday. She now tells me that she's going to go down and push people to ship it out and will call me by 1:00PM Local. She also asked me how much time I have lost from work due to this problem and I told her about a week. Her response to that is to cut me a $300.00 check as compensation. It feels as though i'm being bought to keep me from complaining too much.

I purchased a Murray Riding Tractor with a 12.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine from Home Depot in Aug. of 2002. I was told that it had a one year warranty. The engine blew up in April of 2003. I went to Home Depot and they told me it should be no problem to get if fixed at no charge. They then told me to take it a local Briggs & Stratton repair center.

I Took it to Haines City Lawn Equipment Repair . They told me that they were a Briggs & Stratton repair center. So I left my tractor with them. It took about a week for them to look at it. They said that they ordered a short block. But they had not looked to see what was wrong yet. After the short block came in they installed it, without telling me that they had looked at it, and without my consent for them to complete the repair, they installed the short block. I was not informed that it would be any cost to me, they did not tell I would have to pay over five hundred dollars if Briggs & Stratton did not cover the warranty. I had to call to the repair center several times before I was finally told that I was not going to be covered under warranty.

I was told that it was not covered because the cylinder walls showed wear. I said of course it shows wear because it leaked out some of the oil while I was using it the last time when the engine froze up. And that it was above the add mark when I started using it. I don't feel that I should be held responsible for the repair costs when it was the fault of the engine freezing up. They then told me that they would talk to a Briggs & Stratton rep. They tell me they did. And that he said he would not cover the repair under warranty. So I tried to call Briggs & Stratton's Corporate office in Milwaukee. All they would say is that the local rep. has the final say. And that if I didn't agree with him. I should mail the engine to Milwaukee Wis. at my expense and that they would look at it. But not to expect a different answer. I told them I didn't think that was fair. They told me that was the way it was and hung up.

I went back to the repair center and talked to Gari again. She called the Lake Wales Florida Home Depot while I was there. The manager of the the lawn and garden told her told file the claim again. So she said she would. She finally filed the claim again a couple of days later. I had to call a few more times before Gari finally told me that the claim was declined again. I told her that I wanted try something else. I could not get anyone to listen at Briggs & Stratton. So I told her I didn't know what to do. That I did not have the money. Gari told me that I had to figure something out right away because she had a buyer for my tractor other wise. I was very angry at that. So I told her I wanted it back the way it was when I brought it in then. She told me that she would take off the new peices and throw the old peices in a box for me. That she would not reassemble it. So with no option I had to try and pay five hundred dollars of money I do not have. I picked It up on 6-19-2003 and paid $150.00 with a balance due of $350.00.

Purchased a Murray Riding Mower w/Briggs & Stratton 12.5 HP motor from Wal-Mart in June, 2000. July, 2001 found gas in crankcase. Use clean gas at all times with B & S gas additive. Service unit according to Manual keeping an accurate record of hours for service. Had unit fixed by local shop recommended by Wal-Mart. Problem: Dirt in Carburetor Valve caused Valve (needle) to stick open thereby letting gas enter engine while shut down. Gas flowed through cylinder into crankcase. Found several others who have had same problem. Carb rebuilt. Oil changed. But what of possible long-term damage? Pick up/delivery and repair was approximately $64.00.

Phone calls to Wal-Mart and Briggs & Stratton were a waste of time. They said Carburetor was not defective yet I informed them of care in handling of gas and ALWAYS us B & S gas stabilizer. Others have had same problem. Believe Carburetor is defective. Had an in-line gas valve installed and shut down unit by turning it off and literally let unit run out of gas each time to avoid this happening in the future. Concerned with overall long term damage caused by gas in crankcase. Scoring of piston, piston walls, etc. Am on Disability. Very careful to maintain things as cannot afford replacement due to neglect. Use Preventive Maintenance procedures learned in Army in 60's on everything I own.
