They have contacted me even more now after Covid19 with the phone calls, several times daily from different states. No other has called me but this company. There is something inherently wrong with the owners of this organization.

They have an easy payment system online and will delete your account once settled after 30 days. Really hard to get others to do that so kudos to them. They also give you offer letters which you can also reduce how much you have to pay. The downside to this company are two things. First, minor issue. Their online chat is horrendous. You have to provide them with so much information in regards to your account that when you go look it up it kicks you out. I was trying to ask one simple question, not even related to my account, just a general question, and for a week I could not get anyone to answer it without needing name, phone number, account, merchant, last 4 digits of social security, account balance and like two other things just to even get them to answer if taking can be accepted as paid in full. After a week and online sleuthing, I found the answer in a myFICO forum.
Second, the amount of freaking contact they attempt. Every day 2-10 times with different numbers. On Sundays at 8:30 am or on a Tuesday at 9:01pm. I was making payments for 10 months, put them on hold, the next day just a flood of calls. And when you are making payments, I see no reason for them to mail you a letter 2-3 times amount about when your payment is due, a reminder of payment due, and thanks for your payment. The amount of damage they are doing to the environment with insisting on wasting resources to let you know when something is due is crazy. Just set up an SMS or email system. Other than those gripes, they're not bad. Their online payment is simple and easy to use. I've had no issues with their customer service. Be communicative in a friendly manner and they'll work with you.

These pieces of trash call me everyday —multiple times a day — over a $500 debt I owe. Even through the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, these awful, hideous, morally & ethically bankrupt monsters are STILL bothering people with phone calls. Disgraceful excuse for a company. Awful even by debt collector standards. People are DYING all across the country, & these scumbags continue to operate as business as usual. People are out of work & shut-in inside their homes — some without money or food — & these monsters continue to operate as business as usual. Disgusting people.

The card had $70 on and now they want 3x that. I found the mailing in a mailbox at parents old house not used in years. I made an offer of 1 time payment. They refused. Payment. Was not enough. With coronavirus we all may be dead weeks from now. Sure no one is running to pay off debt with things going on right now.

Portfolio Recovery passed along a debt of my ex to me. In that time, I have 343 phone calls documented from them. Today, when this Virginia company called me from a local number (where my family and parents live), with everything going on, I answered. This company RUINS personal phones. Their anticipating an obligation to answer. Well, you're the one ruining it. Where is the FCC with penalties? This is absolutely abhorrent behavior and no business outside of this industry would dare even try doing this. Why does this man get a line drawn and the sand: **.
And Portfolio Recovery gets to do this "business as usual" during a pandemic? Get real. Open your eyes. The #1 and #2 focus of the country, get people confident in the future and reduce the medical issue from growing. Yet, today on the phone (I have the recording) you ask ME if you should not do your job? The answer is Yes. Don't spoof local numbers and demand payment from US citizens this week. Give them a break, or I'll help the FCC look back on this and post mortem your behavior and inability to adapt process, policies and procedures to help right now. "Look for the helpers." Clearly, your company doesn't want to be in that category. Shocker.

Portfolio Recovery sent a 1099-C to the IRS recently for the year 2017. They say that they sent it to an old PO BOX that I had 6 or 7 years ago. I found out about this when I received a notice from the IRS in December 2019 saying that I may owe them almost $4000 because of this cancellation of debt. I have had several conversations with Portfolio Recovery which tells me that this debt was charged off in my favor in 1995. How is it in my favor if now the IRS is saying I owe almost $4000? I have asked who was the original debtor and the company that they give me is no longer in service.
They gave me a number to reach the debtor but when I call, it gives me numbers to the businesses in that area. I asked for proof that this is my account because I don't ever remember having a credit line that large. They have nothing. They sent me a letter stating that my balance is zero after talking with them several times and after their investigation of this situation. I called the IRS and they say that doesn't work for them. They sent it in and I owe! I had to complete a Form 14039 which I claim identify theft. Wow! Can any business send things to the IRS stating that we owe money and it is just accepted without proof?
Now I am fighting a battle in my retirement age because some business that can't even prove it was me says that I have a charge off that happened 23 years ago. Please look after your loved ones that are getting older. This has really made me wonder how many people are being ripped off!!! I guess the next step will be to get a lawyer to put money in their pocket.

This company has a bad debt of mine from a couple years ago. Yes they called too much, but that is what a debt collector does. I am someone trying to make a debt correct and they have been very patient with me while I figure out my financial situation. They have set up payments and so far so good. They even gave me a percent off of what I owe. They were very willing to work with my circumstances. Pretty unprofessional with laughing in the background of all of my calls, but that happens a lot if you work at a call center. You cannot control everyone else's behavior as you are in the phone.

I fell in hard times four years ago and by the time I was in a better position to start paying back my debt, two of my accounts had been placed with Portfolio Recovery Services. They are awful. Constantly called both my cell phone, my work phone, and my co-worker's phones. When I spoke to them, they offered to only settle for 30% which was still way too high for me to pay. Ultimately, they ended up leaving me alone because the statute of limitations in my state that they could sue ended. But, my nightmare continues with them as I received a 1000C for both accounts so now I will be paying the IRS for years to come. I wish I could offer better news to anyone trying to deal with them but they will find a way to screw you over no matter what you do.

They have yet to be provided and I have even done my due diligence and spoke to the original companies, which also are unable to provide validation (other than my name being on the account). I was escalated to Kenith (an operations manager) who was very apathetic and distant when I was explaining my situation. This Fla consumer agency let this flunky company get away with a non answer as to what my debt was and who they were looking for by calling me, they havent stopped.
I am getting a lawyer and complaining to Virginia's BBB, where they are based. BTW I own my home, cars and all, I have NO debt or any inquiries on my credit report, I PAY ALL of the bills I make. At first, I was nice and informed them that I believe they have the wrong person. I have no Capital One credit card on my credit report, and have never had any Capital One credit lines in my life. They asked if my date of birth was such and such. I told them NO. They asked if I lived at such and such address in South Carolina. I told them NO, I don't even know anyone who lives in South Carolina. They asked if the last 4 of my SSN was **, and I said NO. The only thing I have in common with the person who owes that debt is a VERY common name.
The woman I spoke with thanked me, and said they obviously had the wrong person. I thought this was settled. The calls stopped for 2 weeks, then started right back up. Same thing. Trying to collect the exact same debt. I told them again that they have the WRONG PERSON. They keep right on calling! This is harassment! This has been going on for SIX MONTHS! Sometimes they will call 2-3 times a day. Something needs to be done about this nonsense.

Portfolio Recovery continues to break Federal Law and engage in criminal business practices which resulted in their being found guilty and fined by the United State Federal Govt. In our experience, this criminal enterprise sent a single notice of claiming ownership of an account in our name that never existed and was disputed several times with the claimed creditor they purchased the account from. They, then, proceeded to file a lawsuit seeking the amount claimed was owed and fees. Even after disputing this with them, they then threatened to garnish wages, seize vehicles, and any valuable property they could to satisfy a $1100 debt account that was not ours to begin with. Needless to say, the process is still ongoing with complaints filed with the federal government and NASDAQ exchange that this publicly traded company is a member of and traded on.
From the CEO right on down to the shareholders, paralegals, customer service reps, and their representing lawyers, the first instance of breaking federal law and preying on the American people didn't seem to get their attention or change their behavior. In fact, their entire so-called business model is predicated on parasitism and predation - siphoning what little assets and wealth the poor have into the hands of parasites who serve no function or purpose in society other than to attack and feed on it. It should be safe to say that far more stringent and exacting legal consequences will now be coming to this group of criminals and predators. Things will move beyond fines. Keep watch. The investigation is ongoing.

I've been trying to get details of a settlement from these people for months now. I even resorted to sending a request via certified mail to which they responded with completely unrelated documents, showing that they didn't bother to read the letter I had sent. They consistently lie on the telephone saying that something is being sent, but then another representative will say that the documentation doesn't exist. A "manager" today claimed that they don't keep records showing purchase of accounts, so I guess they don't keep basic business records?
Their agents constantly contradict themselves and each other. They will give you a half-baked answer to get you off the phone, but will magically have a different answer when you press them and they have to read documents that are on the screen in front of them. One of the best is when they don't pay attention to what you're saying because they're distracted by the office celebrating someone successfully extracting money from someone.
It's not like you really have any choice of dealing with this company, but hope that you never mess up and fall into arrears on an account that is sold to these bottom feeders. Don't bother dealing with them yourself. Get an attorney to deal with them and get absolutely everything in writing. They rely on you defaulting or just giving them money and are unable to function if they actually have to do anything outside that plan.

One time, about a year ago, I answered and asked why they were constantly calling, and they asked to speak to my son. When I asked why they wanted to speak to him, they said they couldn't tell me, so I said I would tell them nothing until they explained why they were calling, and I asked them to stop calling. They keep calling, and I can't block their calls because they use a different phone number with nearly every call.
My son still gets all his mail at my address because he is renting a house a few miles from me, and doesn't want mail delivered there while he is at work. I know neither he nor I have ever gotten a letter from Portfolio Recovery, and the only debt collection letter I ever got was about an ambulance bill; the collection agency dropped it after I wrote them an explanatory letter. Last year, after answering that one call from Portfolio Recovery, my son and I did full credit report checks on ourselves and my wife, and the credit reports showed no unpaid or disputed debts from anyone. I tell them I'm on the list and they say sorry but a few days later they call again.
I even tried to reason with them by saying debt is way too old and can't be put on my credit report. They claim they can but that's a lie. Someone needs to file a class action lawsuit on these people to bankrupt them since they refuse to obey federal law. Hard to believe but they are listed on the stock market. Look up their name and notice they don't show any addresses. The reason is that they are afraid that someone they have been harassing would show up at their door. Why are they allowed to own more than 20 phone numbers? This is ridiculous. I now have my phone on the do not disturb dial tone just to stop them. They are freaking ridiculous and needs to be stopped especially after they see that someone just made a payment.

I am certain these fraudsters convince some people to pay fake debts with these tactics. This is wrong, these filth are allowed to harass people for decades with no repercussions. So I owe debt to Portfolio Recovery Associates LLC. They ended up sending me something in the mail about a court order from Johnson Mark debt collection. I called Johnson Mark up and we made arrangements to get things paid off quickly. I had been making payments of $65 each week for two weeks then after that would be $32 every week. I had been doing so and had ask before that, "Is there going to be any legal action on my part because I don't want to get sued?" That said no as long as I make the payments and keep in contact with them if something goes wrong that they would not go any further.
I got something in the mail after making the first payment stating that I didn't go to court and it went to default in their favor and was fined another 250 extra dollars and screws up my credit even more than it is now. This is **. They never told me that I needed to go to court and that everything was fine as long as I kept paying what I needed to pay which I did and now because it went into default I can't fight it now **.

I really wish I could give this company a rating of negative infinity stars because they are just awful. For an unaccredited company with a shady personality, PRA sure knows how to terrorize and harass everything with a pulse to obtain money; that doesn’t even actually belong to them. The audacity. I am a college student, currently away from home, and my parents were the ones to be served. I absolutely despise their tactics to latch on to people for their own gain. I did not even hesitate to file my response with the court. I mean, you send the deputy to my door and you have the nerve to not include any sort of financial documents, or even a warning? The summons is vague and I just must say, not only do I not owe a penny to PRA, the “debt” they are proclaiming that I have was in 2016.
I would have been fooled, but it appears they have changed the date they blessed me with their presence within my credit report from 2016 to 2017. I filed a dispute against them, and they not only added a derogatory remark on my credit report, what was originally resolved is now “resolved, customer disagrees”. I disagree with PRA alright. This company needs to be shut down. It is fraudulent, and it is intrusive to human rights across the board. With all I have read, I can only assume this “company” is not actually a company, rather it is a bunch of individuals whom seek pleasure by terrorizing others, and I bet they all work from home. For the last year, these people keep calling and misgendering me on recorded lines. I have made it clear that they do not have permission to record me, but they continue. I owe the debt that they are trying to get me to pay and have made it clear that I am happy to pay it, but I have simply asked them to put me on unrecorded lines. They say that they can do this, put me on hold to get an unrecorded line, and then after 10 minutes they always tell me that they will "have to call back on an unrecorded line later".
Every week I get a new call, "Hi. I'm calling on a recorded line, can I talk to, sir?" and I say "Hi. You don't have permission to record me, and I would like you to note in my account not to refer to me as sir or with other male-gendered phrase." And they say okay. I get the same call at least weekly for the last year, and they don't do what they say they'll do. I've been happy to pay the debt this entire time, but they never gave me the option to.
I recently searched around for their site and found out that you can sign into their site to pay the debt, which seems a lot nicer since nobody is harassing me in the process. It would be good to know where they are calling from, because - depending on where - some of the harassment here is illegal. I'm pretty sure that calling me on an unrecorded line after I have said they don't have permission to record me is illegal as well, but not 100% sure on that one.

Received a call today regarding accounts in collections. I admit to the debt, but the agent who took the call, after someone called and didn’t leave a message could not answer my questions. She self reported in her script that Portfolio COULD NOT report to the credit union, nor could they sue for the debt. I asked the lady why it was on my credit report if they were not granted permission to report to credit bureaus based on their company policy. No response. Sticking to the script. She advised that I should dispute my credit report, she then proceeded to get her supervisor on the phone after I told her I had recorded her statement and would be disputing.
She was furious and stated that she didn’t give permission to be recorded. In my state, it only requires one person of the two to be aware of the recording. Hey she was recording me! I then asked how much they would be able to settle all accounts for. It was probably around 10-12%. I told them no thanks. All of a sudden they all started laughing on the phone, because that is professional... I told them I would be consulting an attorney and they could call someone else on a Saturday morning and hung up. If you can’t sue and you can’t report to the credit bureaus then why is it there? Done with this company. I’ll call the original creditor and settle with them. It’s clear that this company is a joke. Please feel free to advise on who to report them to. I’m over it.

About a year ago my father received a call from this firm claiming to be looking for me. My father has never co-signed any debt I have ever had. I have never lived with him or shared a phone number. In the last six months this firm called me twice, claiming to be collecting on a CC outstanding from 7 years ago. The CC is not outstanding but was a story in and of itself - I hate debt and I had obtained it and used it sparingly just to avoid having a thin file, never had a balance over $160, and got sick of the pointless exercise of having a card just so that my file would show that I had availability - one more little bill to mail, account to check, bank to deal with, etc... and the junk mail, marketing calls etc...
Then after I'd had the card for a few years they started calling me the day after the bill would come. The bill would come on Wednesday, either $0 or $160 or in between, due the following Friday, so I'd put it in a tray I keep for coupons, bills etc... to deal with on Saturday morning, and then on Saturday morning I'd mail the payment out on my way to the supermarket, a week before it was due - plenty of time to get there. And I've always done that. But they started calling me on the Thursday asking me when I planned to make the payment - - which wasn't due yet. I found this to be annoying and intrusive, and potentially embarrassing since I didn't live alone and this could look like they were dunning me. I asked them to stop, they couldn't explain why they were doing it, they said they would stop, but they didn't.
And then in month three of this, they called BEFORE THE BILL HAD EVEN COME. So I called the number on the back of the card, got the present balance, asked to pay by phone from my checking account and to close the account - and did so. It was about $155. Two days later they called AGAIN and said their system screwed up and they needed re-authorization. So I gave it to them, stayed on the phone, and they said it finally did go through and that's it, I never had to deal with them again. THEN the statement came - and I noticed that they'd been charging me a few dollars per month for "credit insurance" for which I'd never signed up. So I called and lodged a complaint, and they said they'd look into it, and about a year later they sent me a check for the amount they had overcharged me. It had been five dollars a month for 15 months, $75. No interest or anything. Huh. But fine - I never heard from them directly otherwise.
But a few years later, every few months someone calls claiming to be calling for Capital One, and quoting a different balance every time. One caller asked my girlfriend if she could make the payment, which they said was four hundred and some odd dollars. This would be illegal even if I actually had a debt - you can't ask someone else to pay it. I took the phone, pointed this out, and they hung up. Then the calls stopped for a number of years. I do not recall what the caller ID said or what outfit the caller claimed to be with.
But now this, with Portfolio Recovery Associates. First they call my father, who lives in a different state at an address and phone number that were never mine, were never associated with this or any other account. And my father has never co-signed or guaranteed any debt I've ever had. But they called him. Not me. They called him claiming to be looking for me. To call him, they would first have had to look me up on Lex-Nex, where my contact information is right there on page 1 of my report (I used to collect for a living and while I wasn't supposed to do so, I looked myself up). The list of possible relatives is about 4 pages in, and then I believe that if you click on him you get his address (I didn't look him up - I'd looked up actual debtor, who had actually skipped, for my job eight years ago and that's how it worked).
Also, I live at the same address with the same contact info that I had when I had the CC. They didn't call me for many months thereafter. And the first time they said I owed seven hundred dollars and change. I told them, "Look. I don't have this card, I paid it in full seven or so years ago, by phone, they acknowledged the payment and closed the account, and I have never since heard from them other than offers to open up a NEW account, which I've burned in the fireplace." They said, "Well our records show differently." I said, "Don't call again." But they called - today, which is a few months later. And now they say I owed six hundred fifty dollars. So, how would the balance have come DOWN? How do they have different info than the last time they called? Why did they call a relative first? I called them back when I'd missed the call - it's definitely them.
How do they make money? What exactly is their business? How do they operate? What do they do - look random people up on Lex-Nex, see that they once had a CC with a bank, and call the person - and his relatives - many years later claiming that there was still an outstanding balance - without even deciding what dollar amount they were going to claim was owed? Who actually makes a payment to these people? How are they able to do this without being shut down? How does this even work - who would just say "duh ok, I'll send money."
This is also the second time I have had this experience with PRA calling on a CC that I had many years ago paid off. They called my parents - both of them (they're divorced) - in 2006 on a card I had paid off in November 2004, just after MY divorce settled -- BofA. I called BofA to confirm that my account had been paid off. Then they called ME like eight years later also claiming to be calling on a BofA CC. I again called BofA which confirmed that I had no debt outstanding with them - very nice lady actually. Then they sent me a letter -- with completely different information -- address that was never mine, name spelled differently, charge-off date six months after I'd paid the account off. Oddly enough, they never called again after sending me the letter. PS neither CC is or was on my Experian. But PRA is. Who are these guys and where do they get their "info?" And how do I get PRA off my Experian?

I found out this dysfunctional outfit went behind My back & filed a lawsuit against Me. Without Me knowing about it. However I haven’t seen anything yet. How I found out about it was through a attorney that specializes in Bankruptcy & told about what Portfolio Associates was plaining on doing. So The Attorney advised Me to file bankruptcy. Which now that’s the route I’m going to take. All because of them. I’ve never heard anything great about them or any others. My personal advice to all if you have to deal with this dysfunctional bunch or other debt collectors first make sure they validate the debt they are claiming is yours. (2) Keep track of payments! So that they can’t try to lie about saying they never got it.
Protect your self & know your rights! There’s things they can & can't do! Personally it’s best to pay off the debt. I know everyone’s situation is different. I know life happens. Yes bad things happen to good people. Sadly unfortunately. Don’t let them try to get one over you. If you must talk to them just try to show some courtesy. If the person starts to get rude or nasty just hang up on them. You don’t have to take any crap off them. Like I said keep track of all Payments!. Until the debt is settled. Believe Me they will lie to you. Based on the stuff I’ve read here .this a dysfunctional outfit! They need to be shut down.
Original Review: Be careful with debt collectors. If you have to deal with them keep track of every payment & document it date & all when was sent, etc. If you can pay off the debt in full do it if you can. The less you have to deal with it the better. These places buy debts for pennies on the dollar. Don’t let them intimidate you. They make a commission off the debts. Just be careful when dealing with a debt collector. Like I said document everything including payments. Don’t let them get the upper hand.

Haven't carried a balance over a few hundred dollars in 13 years, and I paid that balance in full - even confirmed this with the creditor after it had cashed my check. After this, I continued to live at the same place for many years. This former creditor had my address and number and never once contacted me apart from sending advertisements to get another card. I moved many years later - and many years have since passed.
I work, and I have had the same contact info for many years. It is on LexNex and Experian - which all legitimate collection firms have (I used to collect for a living). My current contact info has been in both LexNex and Experian since it became my contact info nine years ago. I have no debt for anyone to be looking to collect. And if a legitimate creditor or collector wanted to find me, it would take about 30 seconds to do so. This company called my father today claiming to be looking for me. The name of the firm and its website indicate that it is a debt buyer. You're not allowed to call relatives claiming to be looking for someone if you have their contact info or access to it. This company calls and harass me on a daily basis. Sometimes two or more times a day. This has been going on for five years or more. I have been making payments as I could afford them over this period of time. However in February of this year I set up a scheduled payment plan so that they could quit calling me. Needless to say, they continue to call me two or more times a week because they either do not take out the scheduled payment or they cancel my payment schedule. Every time I try to explain this to them they try to make it my fault because of their screw up. I will admit that I have not been the nicest person to deal with since setting up the payment schedule because it bothers me that they continue to call. Especially when I make the payments on time and they are not applying them to my account.
Today I received another call from them to set up another payment schedule (this is the 5th time doing this) because someone went into my account on Aug. 5, 2017 and cancelled what I set up on July 19, 2017. I was unaware of this happening until I received their call. When I tried to explain not only to the associate but also to her manager they told me that they didn't do it. I told her they had to because I have not been in that account since July 8, 2017. As I was trying to explain the situation the manager kept interrupting me and was not trying to hear what I was saying. I was already upset because they called and was admittedly being rude but this really upset me.
So I tried to set up the arrangement once again with the associate. She kept asking questions and I told her that she already has all of my information and to just please set up the payments so we can end this call because I was upset and didn't want to talk about it anymore. So she hung up on me. I called back and explained my situation to another associate, who did not ask all of the dumb questions the previous associate did and setup the payment plan yet again without issue. And requested that they send me letters confirming this info. I'm sure they are going to screw things up and start calling me again because they do this literally all of the time.
These people do not communicate with one another nor do they read the notes in their system. Because if they did they would know that I have set this up numerous times and with various people. Every time they call they are calling from a different state and I have to tell them to read their notes and that's when they proceed to tell me that they see in their notes that I have spoken with someone previously and set up a payment schedule but that I did not make a payment. Funny thing about that is that after they took out the "missing" payment they sent a letter stating that they took out the money. Also, they tried to tell me that something was wrong with the banking information and that they received an NSF message from the bank which I know is also a lie because I have another account that has the same banking info and that payment was taken out without a problem.
This company is the most incompetent company that I have ever dealt with. They really need to get it together and do their jobs because it is extremely frustrating to continuously be harassed due to their employees not reading their notes and not following through on posting payments correctly. If they had their company in one central place instead of all over the country they could possibly do a better job of keeping track of what their employees are doing.

7 years ago, I got very angry with a bank. They jacked my credit card interest up to 30% and lied about when they would lower it back to normal. So I made payments until I paid back the money borrowed. (They just didn't get any interest.) Then I called them and told them "no more, I just could not pay all that money." They eventually wrote it off. Then I started getting calls from Portfolio Recovery. Just the name implies they are the good guys trying to help the creditors. I blocked more than 70 phone numbers connected with them. This was in 2011 when they started calling me. I checked my credit score recently and found they changed the date to 2013 now. The debt itself should be off the books entirely in September. I am thinking of contacting an attorney friend of mine and we may go after lost money due to higher interest rates because of this.
Portfolio is very shady and you owe them nothing. They buy old debts and try to scare people into paying them off. They sometimes sue and get judgments on people that don't know any better. As I understand it, in Texas, a credit card debt more than 4 years old cannot have a judgment placed on it. Further, the date of the last payment made to the original debtor is the charge off date. Not the date the collector decides to put on your credit report. That would be fraud. Portfolio Recovery, as I understand it, has and is currently being sued for this.

First of all, they are not acting on behalf of a creditor. They've purchased the debt from a creditor. I was served papers, apparently 3 times, however, I do not have any knowledge of this happening. I filed for chapter 13 bankruptcy after this company had already, unlawfully gained a judgement in total amounts of nearly $14K via 3 separate judgments. When I've contacted the courts, they cannot provide the original debtor. First off, how can a collection agency who has purchased your debt from an institution you held your contract with, be able to sue anyone for debt they purchased at a rate of .10 on the dollar? Second, how can a collection agency who is not the original creditor get a judgment against you, let alone for the SAME DOLLAR AMOUNTS OWED TO THE ORIGINAL CREDITOR WHEN THEY PURCHASED IT FOR PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR?
Third, the original debtor you signed your legal contract with has already written the debt off their books, gaining a federal tax deduction for your inability to pay, while a collection agency is legally allowed to purchase this unpaid debt for pennies on the dollar and harass you in your hometown and country by gaining a judgement for all to see, how is this not the worst form of harassment and how can a collection agency sue you when you never conducted business with them??? Anyone reading this, mark my words, if they will take me to court 3 times without my knowledge and gain judgements, filed on the title of my home, which never dissolve and are payable at the highest legal rate of interest, you better get everything recorded (check your state's recording laws prior to doing so to ensure legality) and in writing.
Do nothing without documented confirmation of your agreement FIRST. Many people fell upon hard times within the past decade. Portfolio Recovery found a way to go way beyond their legal limitations regarding their practices. I filed for Chapter 13, and am on a 5-year repayment plan. All of my debt is gone from my credit record, but these 3 judgments from Portfolio Recovery. It will result in a huge legal battle with them to get them to remove these Judgements, I can see that, but it will be worth every penny I make to see them put in their place.
In my opinion, they should be put out of business. If nothing else, all who have been illegally harassed by any of their employees, contract employees, attorneys or third parties acting on their behalf should join forces and file a suit together. Contact your States Attorney General with a detailed letter of the illegal and unethical practices of Portfolio Recovery. This is no small ma and pa collections agency. Do not ignore their contacts and document every communication with them. Had I have known about a court date, I would have appeared, explaining my circumstances. When a defendant fails to appear, the Plaintiff automatically is granted everything they asked for in their petition.

At first they said I owed over $2k then they said $1800 and then $1580 and now they're saying they have a deal that will settle all my debt for just $1200 and like if I owed money and hadn't been making payments, wouldn't the amount of money I "owe" still remain the same? The buyers of her business have deposited all of the funds into escrow. Both seller and buyers have signed all documents. However Portfolio still have not released the judgment 47 days later. That means the seller can not receive her money, the buyers can not take possession of the property and none of the real estate agents can be paid.

I am getting at least two - sometimes MORE - phone calls from this company on my landline, usually between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Central Time, and again in the afternoon between 4:00 and 5:00. They are almost never from the same number or even the same area code. The company name shows up in my Caller ID window and when I see it I automatically don't answer it. They never leave any messages saying who they are and what the intent of the call is, nor have I ever received any sort of written communication from them - either by email or snail mail. These calls have been coming in from them for probably close to a year now; I don't remember when they started.
As far as I know I don't have any current, valid debts and, when my credit card payments are due, I pay them on time and well above the minimum dollar amount they require. My credit score has been consistently between the upper 600s to lower 700s, which is considered "good" and several times in the past two years my credit limits have been raised. On one particular card it was DOUBLED! For these reasons I have no idea why this company, Portfolio Recovery, would be calling me unless it is about some long-ago debt that was long-ago charged off. If they never leave me any messages I have no idea what, if anything, they're trying to collect from me and I'm not going to answer their calls and acknowledge them unless and until they state the reason for the call or send me something in writing.
For all I know they could be trying to collect a debt from someone who has the same name as me or someone who might have had this phone number before me. I keep hoping that, sooner or later, if I don’t answer the phone they’ll give up on me but they don’t. I’ve never before had anyone or any company call me as persistently as Portfolio Recovery has. What needs to happen is this: federal (not STATE) laws need to be passed prohibiting these types of companies from being licensed or having their licenses continued in effect if they don't (1) truthfully state who they are and the purpose(s) of their calls, specifically identifying the debt they are trying to collect and (2) they must provide full written documentation (i.e., a mailed letter or email on their company stationery) stating exactly what it is they're trying to collect and from whom.
In this way the person being contacted by a debt-collection company can know whether or not the debt is a legitimate one. Reputable collection companies are doing this. In my specific case, when they properly identified themselves and provided WRITTEN documentation, I have successfully worked out payment arrangements with them. Once I paid them back, in full, I never heard from them again. A company that has nothing to hide should have no problem ID'ing themselves and stating what they are trying to collect. Congress needs to enact tough laws cracking down on the abuse and harassment companies like Portfolio Recovery and others are foisting on their prey. But, since it highly likely that these companies are contributing to Congressional and Senate campaigns (and these could be from either or both major political parties) nothing is likely to get done along these lines.
No doubt these companies, like many others, have an army of lobbyists stalking the halls of Congress making sure those who accept their campaign contributions toe the line and keep consumer protection bills from being passed. The whole rotten system STINKS. Hopefully our next president, whoever he or she is, will be proactive in this area and stand up for the undeserving victims of these vultures and bottom-feeders. And Congress needs to do its part as well.

This debt was charged off, I incurred the consequence of bad credit for many years because of a debt of $789. I had a hip replaced less than two years ago and will have a shoulder replaced in 2 weeks, in addition to metabolic illness. The only relief I will have from being low-income is when I die. They also sent a deputy constable to my mother's house twice about a credit card bill. I was unable to make payments on a department store's credit card, due to a job loss. The balance ended up going to numerous collection agencies. Last year, the court constable was on my doorstep, explaining to me about a lawsuit. He suggested that I should contact the lawyer's office to set up payment arrangements. According to the lawsuit, there was no court date given. Although I did appreciate them working within my budget, and to have everything documented, the court constable knocking on my door to serve the paperwork WASN'T NECESSARY!!
I finished making the payments in August and the court documents released the lawsuit. One month later, I received a phone call from Portfolio, talking about one of the payments declined because of insufficient funds. I impatiently explained to the woman that I received the court documents a month afterwards and I wasn't going to make any more payments until they can provide hardcore evidence. I made one last payment to get these people off my back. Good riddance!!
Portfolio Recovery Agents don't know how to handle phone calls on a professional manner. The court document should have been sent to my residence AFTER I was finished making the payments. Also, they could have had the lawsuit sent via certified mail, instead of having the constable pounding on my door like a mad man!! I haven't heard from these people in over a year and I don't ever want to deal with them AGAIN!!!

Lost case. Had to defend myself because of cost of an lawyer. This happened in Greenville, SC. SC has nothing to protect you from debt buyers, they let them represent themselves as debt collectors. It's like a kangaroo court in Greenville County Common Pleas. The Portfolio accomplice in our part of SC is Richardson and Plowden (their lawyer is Adam **). They (the state), have done one thing to help and that was to create an ADR (alternative dispute resolution), which is mandated in our county but somehow was removed from my case.
The only chance of only losing half your ** is the ADR program. As most of you know, a debt buyer buys a defunct account for 5 to 7 cents on the dollar and the next second restores this written off or charged off debt to its former glory (full value). Only in America right? So in my case, the court or lawyer, through neglect of their responsibilities or on purpose, removed or ignored the ADR step. So pay attention. I didn't have the ADR step even though it is MANDATED for Greenville County. Of course no one knows how that happened. The only thing that will stop this is the State Senate or State Representatives doing what they are supposed to do, protect the people. Good luck with that one, so all you have to do is get lawyers to write bills that will keep their frat brothers from making easy money.

I was sick with Crohn's disease, living in the middle of nowhere and my three year old son had just been diagnosed with special needs. Our bills began to add up quick to 16,000$ and I was unable to work due to my illness. We had to walk away from our home, our bills, everything. Portfolio is a big talker. They talk the talk but can't walk the walk. They kept sending threatening letters and eventually sued us in court. My husband answered the complaint and we hired a firm to help us. We were told to be prepared to pay at least half of what was owed.
Portfolio was not willing to spend time on our case, they just wanted us to pay. That's their motto and what they live by. They don't want you asking questions and they esp. don't want you to make them prove their case. Our case got dismissed bc when push comes to shove they were unable to produce live witnesses at the trial. I think it's a really good idea to fight them in court. A lot of times, they don't show up or they can't do what is expected of them. Portfolio is WAY happy when you DO ignore them, so if they are suing you, do NOT ignore it. Answer the summons and fight back. We did, and I'm happy to have the burden of the lawsuit off my shoulders.

NOTHING, as in zero dollars and zero cents. PRA buys records of signed-off debts from banks and other lending organizations. They collect on debts that are years old, invalid, paid or otherwise - these are not valid debts and you DON'T OWE MONEY ON THEM. They've had to pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars in lawsuits for this deception, as well as contacting folks during off hours, at their place of business, etc. There's rules about when a company is allowed to contact you, and these guys pretty much break all of them. Go to the Better Business website and look them up - they have an alert on their account, as well as over 1,200 complaints.
This organization, despite the lawsuits, is still very much up and running; my husband got a call less than a half hour ago. They are a functioning business, and they continue to function because people are intimidated by their aggressive tactics and they blindly pay them money that they don't owe them. When you get a call from any type of business such as this, get their company name and do research FIRST before paying out a penny. And if PRA calls you, tell them these debts are expired and hang up. Seriously, people, you can't ripped off if you don't hand your wallet to the thief.

I am a single father with a 50/50 arrangement with my ex-wife for my three children. In the spring of 2009, I had purchased several home appliance items totaling several thousand dollars. I was at the time employed and had every intention to repay the charged amount much more quickly than on a monthly basis. However, I lost my job, my house was repossessed, and I was unemployed for over 2.5 yrs. During that time I could barely support the four of us, was and still am receiving living assistance from family and friends. I was unable to pay any of my credit card bills, student loan bills or any other non-essential bills. Every utility I had on my home was overdue and paid late.
Finally, in the summer of 2011 I got a job at Starbucks making a little over 9.00/hr, obviously not a living wage. I began conserving what little money I made and worked to get my bills and life back on track. During that time I was still unable to repay my unessential bills. My credit card went into collections ending up with Portfolio Recovery Associates 866-925-7109. A very nice representative contacted me about repayment of the credit card. I explained my situation and we agreed upon a 25.00/month auto pay from a savings account. He said he would contact me in 6 months or so to see if my income situation had changed. Roughly 6-8 months later, he indeed did call. I stated that my situation had not changed but that I could continue the agreed upon 25.00/month payment.
Then, a few days after April 10, 2015 I was served legal papers at 7:30 in the morning on a weekday, while my children and I were getting ready for school. Portfolio Recovery Associates was suing me for the balance owed on the card, roughly 3500.00. There had been no contact from them, as far as I knew, to alter my existing agreement, but I was instead, served with what I consider harassing legal papers as if I was some type of criminal. As I said, I had an agreed upon financial arrangement with Portfolio Recovery Associates, have receipts to prove my my repayment and am completely taken aback by being served legal papers for a debt of which I was actively repaying within my means to do so. I am still in process with them.

I tried calling and the woman said that the department handling my account had closed for the night. I am not paying them anymore. I am calling tomorrow and withdrawing my authorization to take payments out of my account. I only owe $300 or so dollars and if they want to take me to court over that, be my guest. I would rather have the $100 a month back in my pocket anyway. They are a bunch of scammers and I should have let them sue away and shown up at a court date instead of letting this happen because I was afraid of them. Now my credit score is going to tank and I have been trying to raise it. Oh, well.

This company is unethical and does not practice within the law. After being informed that an account was time barred, this company filed a lawsuit.

I called Portfolio Recovery and gave them my son's cell phone, who is unrelated to the account and has nothing to do with it. I was told by Betty ** that they did not have that number on the account, and I told them that "You must have. You called his cell phone. Remove it." I then spoke to a supervisor who said they would remove it, but again denied they called the number. I asked what this was about, and got put on hold for 10 minutes and hung up. I do not know why they called my son's number and asked they stop. I also don't know what the debt is for and could not receive an answer over the phone. I am especially upset because they denied they had my son's cell phone when my son told me they called him first.

My son has a debt that Portfolio Recovery has taken over. I paid this debt of $125 with a check, which was received by Portfolio Recovery and deposited by them. I have a copy image of the check which clearly shows that they received and deposited it into their account. Yet my son's debt has not been cleared and the check has not been posted to his account to bring his balance to a zero. I had to fax these people a copy of the check. I called today and must now wait and call again next week to see what they have decided. What is there to decide? Apply the check to his account and call it a day! How hard can it be? These people are really working the last nerve and I have been really nice. But if this nonsense continues, I am going to have to bring something against them for keeping the money and not applying to where it should go.

This company has claimed that they bought a debt owed by me and we go to court tomorrow. They have failed to produce any evidence that they own anything; nor can they substantiate what were the actual charges that make up this debt? Anyway, they have harassed and sued me hoping I would pay I guess, but they are in for a rude surprise when we actually show up in court and they can't come up with anything for this supposed debt.

I had a bill with Capital One from ten years ago. Well now these idiots call me like crazy and threaten me all the time. I told them and asked them how did they get my cell number. They refuse to say how they got it. They tracked it down illegally and I always tell them over and over to stop calling or I will sue them for tracking my number down and calling without "permission". Now it gets better, lol. I just started a new home land line for work so I can do faxing to my corporate office in Illinois and, lo and behold, they tracked me on that number and immediately called my home line and left a message there. Yes, you guessed it. I never gave them that number cause I am not that crazy to give it out to them to begin with and they still did the illegal maneuver and called me anyways - just a few days after I got that phone line installed.

This company calls at all hours of the day, never leaves messages and are apparently trying to collect a debt that does not exist. My spouse and I (both 60+ years old) have not owed anyone anything for several years (since we paid off our home). They will not tell us what they want, and all the credit sites say not to interact with scam artists like this. How can I get them to stop calling multiple times in a day, and several days a week? And advice as to how to get this business in your state to leave us alone would be greatly appreciated.

I have been involved with a debt collection from Portfolio for about 4 years. The numbers keep changing! In Oct. of 2012, I owed, on a judgement $2012 and some odd cents. After making $50 a month payments for 2 1/2 years, I owed $1900. Then I was given a pay off of approx $700. Then the number jumped back up to $1400, then $1900. There is definitely something very, very wrong with this company. It is a judgement and no interest is to be added, but there is no way I paid $1600 and still owe $2022 in 2013 or $1900 in 2014. I ordered all payments to be stopped. This debt is way past recover time as it's from the 1990s from a Visa credit card debt. What an accounting nightmare!! End result, after making all these payments, my balance went down $160.00 over that time frame. The IRS should do a complete audit on this company!

As of yesterday I received 5 letters from different attorneys saying that I may be sued by portfolio recovery and they can garnish my wages. It is due to not being able to pay a old credit card that I stop making payments over two and a half years. I don't know what to do. I don't have much money. I work at Walmart and I have two kids. This really has me stressed. Should I try to work out a plan with portfolio or just go to court and see what happens.

Like everyone out there, I believed in this company. It started from Dave. From that point on after being lured in, I had no idea who all I had spoken to. It went to a funding coach then another guy claiming to help us get an LLC that I paid for and a DNB account that I also paid for. I was charged an activation fee of $298.00 and then followed $2,000. All the other stuff to get the business started, $1,500. Lot of money, this company should feel ashamed. My finances went down from there. I have gone so far down I almost filed bankruptcy to pay off my debts. I get this letter every so often that I owe them $2,811 which is a part of unsecured business funding called Portfolio Recovery. Is there anyone out there that can tell me how I can get my money or press charges because they broke the law? They are nothing but a bunch of thieves. If I'm not the only one here, why hasn't a class action lawsuit been filed?

On February 20, 2013, I contacted Portfolio Recovery Associates to notify them that I filed a protective order on one of their employees (my ex-boyfriend) and to ask them questions as to why they are not cooperating with the police. A woman in the Human Resources Department named Kirian told me that no police officers had dropped by. She even put me on hold for a while, claiming she was asking someone at the front desk if they had seen any police officers. I told her the police had no reason to lie and say they had been there several times before and they couldn't locate my ex-boyfriend. So Kirian gave me a suite number to their office and told me to have the police come back. She told me to call back, then I asked for her name so that I could call her back directly.
I called the warrant office that switched me to the police dispatch and I gave the suite number that Kirian had given me along with a brief description. I waited a few hours and called Kirian at Portfolio Recovery Associates at 1:21PM. I refreshed her memory as to who I was and I asked her if the police had arrived. She quickly brushed me off and told me she was sorry, because she cannot give out information about their employees. I told her I was not asking for information about an employee. I wanted to know if the police had arrived. She continued to tell me she was sorry and that she couldn't give out that type of information. I hung the phone up.
My ex-boyfriend had a protective order filed against him, because he twisted my arm and threw me down to the floor. He still lives in my neighborhood and can still try to hurt me. If he is not served the protective order, I am not officially protected by the law. Portfolio Recovery Associates did not care about my well being. They were only concerned with protecting their business, image and their employees. I first called this company on February 14, 2013 to find out if my ex-boyfriend had been served and they continued to give me the runaround from Virginia to Nevada. This is a heartless, inconsiderate company that protects guilty employees from the law.

Portfolio Recovery Associates has recently started calling me on a credit card I had in 2006. I worked for a department store named Gottschalks which offered a company discount through their in-house credit card financed with HSBC. I applied for one at my hire date. I was always on time with my payments. Gottschalks went bankrupt several years ago. Before I left the company, I paid the credit card with a portion of my last check, which was an option at the time. Portfolio Recovery Associates has called and harassed me several times this month. I am unsure how they obtained my new cell phone number (I switched carriers last year). I disputed this account through the three major credit bureaus.
Portfolio Recovery said they sent me letters, requesting information, to an address I haven't lived at in years. The supervisor on the phone was extremely rude. She requested documentation for my final payment. I closed my account in early 2008 and no longer have that documentation. Gottschalks is now bankrupt, and I can no longer request information from them; and HSBC has refused to be of any help. Every other sentence this supervisor said to me was something along the lines of, "And how will you be paying today?" I'm so frustrated because I have tried to explain to them that I paid this account in full on-time, and they are requesting $667 from me. They said I never paid off the card and have accrued interest. I am convinced they are trying to get me to pay double.

This has been 6 months. Now, they are calling my 90-yr old father? I have no idea how they got his number. Four years ago, I called and told them to cancel my card and I began paying off the 300-dollar debt in larger payments than asked for. Then they told me they did not receive my payment and began to slam me. I sent them proof of money order and receipt from post office. This has gone on a long time. This was to the original debt holder. I am on social security disability & food stamps. My health got pretty bad. I have been in the hospital 3 times in 6 months. I do not owe this debt anyway. You can check my SS number and see if this is not true. What is there to protect me? Why, knowing I am not going to pay for I have no income, do they keep calling? They enjoy it. The phone has changed over to my son for he wanted that number. You can check that too. My son in the military pays for me a cell in his name, so I can call him.

I was contacted by an African American, who would not give her name, stating I owed $169+ on a Kay Jewelers account, which was delinquent in 1991.
I informed her that first, Statute of Limitations would be obviously expired, and second, that this is my company phone and is on the "National DO NOT Call List". She said it doesn't apply to them. I called back and talked to Sarah and she said she thinks she has the wrong person.
I have impeccable credit and do not need some credit bureau, who, when I asked not to call my number again, stated she could call anytime she liked as the law does not apply to them. I also want to make sure this is not on my credit report as I just refinanced my house and it was not on there at that time nor have I ever heard from these people nor used Kay Jewelers.
I believe Kay Jewelers is trying to scam people into giving them money never owed to them.

I have been receiving calls from this company for nearly 2 and a half years. It is about a credit card that was paid in full to Capital Federal Bank in Overland Park, KS. My husband who died 2 and a half years ago paid this card off over 15 years ago. They sent us a bill about 3 weeks later saying we still owe them something like 35 or 45 cents. Not dollars.
My husband and I both went to the bank and he asked for the manager and handed him the change. And explained to the gentleman that we had paid in full. And would assume that the change he gave him would take care of the matter. Several months later we received a letter saying that it had been turned over to a collection agency. My husband work for Sears Corporate and he had a friend who was an attorney at the time to contact them and to ask them to stop. Todd was the attorney's name. That's all I remember of his name. That was in 1990. We did not hear from them until my husband's death. They have cussed me, threatened me with court, jail, etc., repeatedly calling several times daily. They first call from one state and then another. They hide the company name. Someone at that bank put the change in their pocket. We were harassed for awhile until our attorney put a stop to it, and it started again upon my husband's death.
It's going on 20 years now. They have tax interest of nearly $799, plus change, on top of the original 35 cents. Now this isn't right. I'm 63 and I live on a fixed income and I will not pay for something these shysters are lying about. The bank had no right to sell something to a company that we did not owe. I called them and I asked them to get these people off my back. They said they sell uncollected debts to these leeches. I do not owe them one cent! I have been through enough stress because of my husband's untimely death. And I feel like I'm going to have a stroke if they keep their harassment up. They need to leave me alone. I do not have the money to hire an attorney to deal with this. Can you help me?
