Please DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT do business with this company. It is the worst. There are NO helpful options for payments, they call you 10 times day, text messages, and voicemails throughout the day even if you're 3 days late on monthly payments like you're 30 days late. I have to call every month to let them know that I work and have a life and don't have times for this ten calls a day. Even if promise to pay, they still call you .like you're their significant other. May even call me more than my boyfriend. Their staff have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE at all. I regret choosing this company for my car loan and there were other options.

Where do I begin with this credit union. From the get-go, when approved for a loan by this CU, they regular mailed a cashier's check and never offered express delivery. This led me to having to work with the dealership to extend my hold on the car and almost lost purchase, several times waiting for a paper check. Funds should be sent via direct deposit!
Now I'm working with them as they gave me the wrong information in regard to transferring my title to a different state - it could be lost, not to mention that I was told it was sent regular mail and had to look into it to determine it was sent via FedEx to the new state. Conflicting information is constant with this CU. PenFed gave me the incorrect address to begin with as they neglected to check the records to see if I was the title holder. The whole point is that they are the lienholder with money still owed on the car and should look into this before sending the borrower the wrong information to supply to the DMV, which they did. This started all of this.
Next, the customer service rep suggested I share blame of what happened and presented this as apologizing to me, when there should have been no confusion as my text correspondence was thorough and questions needed to be asked if the other rep didn't understand me. I was then told that I am unprofessional for suggesting ineptitude as the lienholder should be checking records before giving out wrong addresses. They proceeded to hang up on me - this is unprofessional. They also mentioned that if the title is lost that they probably will not cover it and I would need to apply for a duplicate!
Whether or not the title finds its way to the right place or not, it is time I spoke out against this awful operation known as PenFed. If I could give zero stars, and I don't give negative ratings so this means something, I would. Stay away from here, even if they offer low interest rates as you get what you pay for. P.S. I make significant 'principal only payments' each month and I have noticed that they have ramped up my monthly interest payment, at times, when it should decrease.

PenFed has the worst customer service. I deeply regret wasting a credit pull on this company. They ask for an obnoxious amount of personal information and do not provide any feedback on the status of your loan application until you call. I had to make repeated calls to check on the status of my loan application only to be told repeatedly that the uploads were not able to be viewed or that they were rejected. The application was not reviewed in time do to their lack of communication and delay in reviewing uploaded documents. Their own representatives acknowledged their poor communication with customers. When I asked to speak with a supervisor, the rep responded by asking me 3 times if I wanted to speak with a supervisor! Make it make sense! Do NOT choose this company for your financial needs.

Pen Fed's new security system is a mess. I repeatedly tried to change my ACH bank account. It appeared to have eventually worked but it apparently did not. Since I closed my previous bank account, when the bill came due, it bounced and I was charge interest on the amount. Even though the failure was by Pen Fed, they would not remove the interest. I would have been happy to pay the bills by electronic transfer monthly but they do not accept such so I then began to try to provide for ACH payments. The process required thirty-five steps, the last being Pen Fed making micro deposits in my account that they never did. I won't be dealing with them anymore!

Difficult to get things done, with slow response. I really think the majority of the customer service reps need to be retrained on customer service and operations of the credit union. Very disappointed

My father died in May. He had a car loan. Family didn't want the car. Called PenFed around the end of May regarding voluntary repo. They just took the car on July 17th but they also took a loan payment the same day. They also took a loan payment in June. They procrastinated through the whole process. Never called us back when they said they would. I was being told "there is no paperwork in the file", "nothing was processed." Then I get someone telling me "this is an attempt to collect a debt". They were taking payments! Finally, someone processed the paperwork, but I want the payment back they took the day they picked up the car. I called, and I'm getting the runaround again! I'll never use PenFed.

Zero stars. We’ve reached out multiple times under extremely stressful circumstances following the death of my father-in-law, simply trying to obtain account statements. During our first call, a representative assured us the request would be processed without issue. A few days passed, nothing in the mail. We called again and were told everything was in progress and to just wait.
Now, 15 days later, still nothing. I called again and was told the same thing: “everything is fine.” I pushed harder, and only then was I transferred to Sophia in processing, who informed us, for the first time, that nothing could be done without court involvement. Unacceptable. Why wasn’t this communicated from the start? Why didn’t anyone call us back to explain the issue? We were repeatedly told things were fine when they weren’t, and we lost over two weeks because of it.
To add insult to injury, they were damn quick about settling the account and taking his money, but suddenly everything grinds to a halt when we need documentation for my mother-in-law’s Medicaid application. The only thing holding up her application now is this company’s failure to do their job. We’re now waiting on a promised call from a supervisor, but I’m not holding my breath. Absolutely sickening.

PenFed Sucks. I have around 60 banks accounts that I manage. I also have an accounting degree and am retired and all I do is play with money, moving from account to account. Out of all my accounts PenFed is my least favorite, right behind Wells Fargo. My favorite is Navy Federal. Great rates and customer service. In April 2025, PenFed moved their credit card payment processing, or account management to a new vendor. PenFed told no one what they were doing. Customer service reps did not know it happened. The only way to tell what happened was to look at a credit card statement. I had not used my account for 6 months so I had not received a statement.
This last week I tried to get a credit card cash advance and kept getting denied. PenFed had lowered my limit from $15,000 to $2,500 and did not tell me. I called PenFed 3 times over a couple of days and got different replies. The PenFed Reps had no idea what my credit limit or cash advance limits were, or how much I was allowed to take out! Are you serious? I had to guess and made cash advances of $1000 and then $500 at a time. I was only allowed two denials per day. It took me five days to figure out I had only $2500 available. I have no credit issues and have hundreds of thousands of available through all my accounts. Whomever is in charge of this fiasco is a **.

Hello! I just logged into my account to print the statement for my credit cards and I saw that Pentagon Federal Credit Union made an additional payment this month, May 13, 2025, on my credit card. I made the payment at the beginning of the month and it shows the payment. No one emailed me or called me to be sure this would not cause any budget problem; they just sent the payment! This is why I don't sign up for autopay! I have had this happen with other companies (utilities) take payments twice without correcting or crediting for the next month. This is outrageous!

PenFed, on the surface, appears to be a reputable organization. However, borrowers, federal employees, and veterans should be wary. When applying for a car loan, it is challenging to connect with a human representative; messages often get mixed up, and using emails and online portals can be awkward and time-consuming. After securing the car loan, things may seem fine, and they might even offer you a credit card. Imagine responsibly using this credit card and consistently paying both your car loan and credit card on time for four years, especially as a senior citizen working full-time as a federal employee for the United States of America.
Then, without any notice over a weekend, they reduce the credit card limit by over 30%, leaving only a small buffer from the credit card limit to the account balance, which highly leverages the account and impacts the credit report by 14 points. Again, there's no notice from PenFed to the customer. The customer service, including the supervisor, was insensitive, cold, condescending, and showed no responsibility for the issue. They were unable to resolve the situation and blamed their Underwriting department and the credit reporting agencies, which, by the way, show no derogatory marks and no late payments. I have insisted on being contacted by the supervisor's manager, which has yet to happen. Clearly, PenFed is not maintaining its business well. I am considering moving my auto loan, which has $15,000 in equity, and I do not recommend PenFed.

These incompetents blocked my account just for adding an external Synchrony Bank account and making a second money transfer of $13,000. The sad thing is that their supposed security system is not secure at all since it allowed me to link both accounts and then to make a first money transfer of $30,000. If that transaction had been fraudulent, then I would have lost all that money. I've been on the phone with these individuals four times, and they still refuse to unblock my Premium Online Savings Account.
Not only do their policies go far beyond the norm when it comes to security (and believe me, I appreciate security), but their customer service representatives will make your head spin as each representative has a different answer, asks for a new thing, gives you incorrect information, or simply doesn’t have a clue about anything. I have never, ever, seen such hamstringing of clients. They are the worst company, and when all is complete, they will be removed from my portfolio. As the President of a condo HOA, I was planning on investing our reserve account (more than $400,000) with PENFED. Not anymore!

My husband has been a member for years, but when we suffered a hardship and our credit scores went down, PenFed makes it impossible to open another checking account. They suggested I open my own checking account, which took weeks to upload all the documents they require and wait for the response. I called multiple times and they always needed more documentation. They told me it would be “smooth sailing” after I submitted everything. It wasn’t. They knew from the beginning I had a bad credit score, and instead of telling me it wouldn’t work out from the get go, they strung me along for weeks with the false hope that everything would work out, just to ultimately decline my application. Additionally, when a store made a duplicate charge, and I notified them about it, I was told it takes 10 days for the transaction to be corrected. I’ve had this happen with other banks, and it was handled immediately.
After PenFed denied giving me a second checking account, I was able to get another bank to give me the 2 checking accounts and savings account I needed within hours. There are better banks out there, with more lenient rules, and faster response times. Penfed also told me trying to get ahold of someone on Monday is nearly impossible, so it’s better not to call on that day.
Another time, I was told to follow up on Saturday after uploading the documents they requested, only to wait on hold for a long time, and when I finally got through, I was told the department I needed to talk to on the weekend was closed. They knew what I was trying to get accomplished and should not have told me to call on Saturday to begin with, and since I was told I couldn’t get through Monday, I had to wait until Tuesday to speak to someone. They knew that whole experience has been beyond frustrating, and due to their daily limits, it’s going to take multiple days and transfers to get my money out of there.

Spoke with customer service rep Borisis who was unhelpful and did nothing to resolve the issue I called about, as well, she continued to make notes while ignoring my request to have a manager call me back, which they never did, after she said they would within an hour. All I called about was to ask for them to reverse a fee, as I have been trying to get all of my autopays set up for the last couple of months and they keep depositing my government widow's pension on a different day so I never know when to tell people it is okay to cash a check and the businesses you set up autopay with also end up sending them through days before you told them to, which does not work when you only get paid one time a month and are not wealthy so don't have extra money just sitting in your account all of the time!!!

I am extremely dissatisfied with this credit union. I have both a checking account and a car loan with them. My car loan is fully paid through next month, and while I have been late a few times in the past, it is currently up to date. Despite this, PenFed took it upon themselves to withdraw all the money from my checking account and apply it to my car loan—without notice or permission. This caused a separate payment I had scheduled for another bill to bounce twice, resulting in two overdraft fees of $30 each.
When I called to address the issue, the representative I spoke with was rude, dismissive, and repeatedly lied to me. When I questioned her about the situation, her only response was, "I don't know why we did that." The entire conversation was condescending and unprofessional, even though they were clearly in the wrong for taking my money without authorization. This should be illegal! After 2 days of getting nowhere I finally got in touch with a decent representative who put the money back in my checking and apologized. I will never use this company again as this isn't the first issue I have had with them.

8/2 went to my usual ATM to withdraw funds. Before the screen asking if I want a receipt was loaded the machine shut down. I grabbed my phone and took pictures. Then I called the number on the machine and PenFed. A provisional credit was issued to my account. A month later they took the money out for the 2nd time. Went to their NYC branch office where the manager checked my account and said they investigated the wrong date.
Money was put back into my account. 3 weeks later it was taken out again. They finally supplied me with the documentation supplied by the ATM company. Transaction was time stamped as is my photo. Which proves the machine stopped before the money was dispensed. They don't care. They refuse to entertain my claim any longer actually stating that it's the ATM I have to deal with to rectify the theft. But that's their recommended machine. And they are my financial institution who have a fiduciary responsibility to me their account holder. I've been with them for almost 30 years and I feel like they stole my money and have given me the runaround. I offered to send the time stamp photo but they declined. I have to close my account because I can't trust them to safeguard my money. Terrible way to treat customers.

I happen to overpay. Do you think I get a refund? No, they put it in my deceased savings account that I didn’t even know she had. Had issues early on when a week before closing, our closing attorney was not able to get in touch with our lender to finalize the numbers. Then after a year, we were paying double of what we needed to in escrow, now we just received notice that our escrow will be increasing by $968 a month because not enough has been being taken out and to cover for the shortage. This is absolutely absurd. This clearly has been going on for over a year and someone made a mistake and does not know how to do their job. Now we are expected to pay nearly $1000 extra per month because of someone's incompetence. Their fees are low, which is why we went with them, but you get what you pay for. Technology is also completely outdated. Use a reputable lender that will give you honest accurate numbers from the start. Horrible.

Military families deserve better. On September 27, 2023, Pentagon Federal Credit Union Supervisor, Lindsey, called me a grieving black widow of a military veteran of 24 years, interrogated and badgered me about a vehicle Lindsey knew law enforcement had in their custody due to a traumatic incident that involved the death of my husband on September 06, 2023. My late husband’s body had not made it to the coroner’s office in our state when she called and verbally attacked me on our home telephone.
We had been members with Pentagon Federal Credit Union for 29 years and I was joint on both accounts with survivorship. She had no compassion for my loss and her only concern was how much blood was in the car, and if I wanted to keep it. Pentagon Federal Credit Union does not record their supervisor’s calls so they can treat people anyway they want. Well, that’s my take away from that traumatizing experience that still hurts and haunts me to this day.
On December 27, 2023, I called in to pay on a Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PenFed) credit card that was in my name and my husband’s name prior to his death which was finally transferred solely into my name for $127.00. I listened to the recording and informed the representative that I was agreeing to pay for the credit card for $127.00 that was finally in my name. The PenFed representative informed me that my deceased husband had a credit card only in his name for over $3000.00. I responded to the representative that I did not want to pay on my husband’s credit card until I viewed the statements for it. The representative mumbled something.
The next day I logged onto PenFed's website to discover that the representative had cleared and closed out both my checking and savings account that were only in my name to pay off the credit card that was solely in my deceased husband's name, that I did not agree to pay for. The representative left me with $5.00 in my member account, two days after Christmas and four days before New Year’s Day for 5 months. Prior to this call the accounts that were zeroed out were solely in my name at the time the representative zeroed it out to pay on a credit card that was not in my name.
On January 30 or 31, 2024, I was informed that PenFed was going to repossess the vehicle my deceased husband purchased for our anniversary, even though it was up to date on payments and it had insurance on it. The same vehicle that Lindsey traumatized me about on September 27, 2023. This coincidentally happened the day of or the day after I informed law enforcement that the judge had provided me with a court order for them to release the vehicle to me.
Now PenFed is wanting me to pay on a vehicle that is not in my possession that they repossessed when they could have released the vehicle to me, and I could have continued paying on the vehicle like I had been doing. PenFed had a copy of the death certificate and a letter of testamentary on file prior to repossessing the vehicle. Greed is one of the seven deadly sins, and it seems to be the sin that drives Pentagon Federal Credit Union in my experience with them after my husband's traumatic and untimely death. Military Families deserve better.
