This is the WORST credit card company I have EVER delt with in my life. I had good credit until I got this credit card in order to consolidate some bills. In the beginning I didnt monitor my account as I should (to notice my due dates were changing frequently), so I payed a set amount every month not knowing I was accumulating late fees. I received a call to get the credit card protection for one month free. I tried it, but called within the 30days to cancel, but ignorant me, did check my statements (because I was just mailing a certain amount). Once I notice this, Chase convienently couldnt find the tape that I cancelled but could find the tape where I agreed. I cant put myself on ANY kind of payment schedule because the due dates keep changing and I keep getting $40 late fees. Rip Off! The straw that has really turned my blood is that they increase my payment by $3 and charged me a $80 dollars in late fees because of the $3 shortage. I called to see if I could get this waived and I was told no! Are you kidding me!!!! You charged me $40 b/c of a $3 dollard shortage. PLEASE WARN YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY...DO NOT GET A CHASE CARD. THE PROMOTIONS ARE SCAMS TOO!!!!

I have a Chase Freedom card that we pay timely each month at a low fixed rate of 8%. My pay cycle at work was changed so my husband adjusted the billing frequency by approx 10 days for the credit card and paid the amount of $317 on that day - still during the same month. When he received the next invoice (he takes care of paying our bills) he noticed the rate jumped to 29% with a new minimum payment expectation of $910. In contacting Chase and speaking to a kind representative Jeanine, although no one could at that time take my call in the Rate are, she requested I call based as seeing our history on the account, we are obviously good customers. In contacting them back and waiting on hold, I spoke to Michael who said there were no promotions currently going on and that there was nothing he could do. I asked if there was anyone else to talk to on this matter because I could not believe there was nothing that could be done. He said no that is why you are talking with me. So, I further expressed - not yelling - that it was highly disappointing in today's economy that Chase was unwilling to work with the consumer. He said again it was all he could do and so I proceeded in closing down the credit card. This lack of customer service in the state this country is in today is pitiful and needs to be recognized and stopped.

My series of online payments for my Washington Mutual credit card ended in December; my January payment of $80 wasn't made. Chase's response has been OVER THE TOP: calling my home so many times we stopped answering the phone at all a week ago. Constant, constant, constant calls. I've explained the situation, told them that I've always paid on time up to know, that I've already scheduled an online payment, and no thank you, I don't want to pay for a phone payment. They call, and call, and call, and call. I'm usually polite, but after the 3rd day in a row that they called me AT WORK and I explained AGAIN, I just told the person to go somewhere and die. I feel so angry at this needless harassment of a customer that has never given them any trouble.

So my original complaint was posted on 1/16/2009. Since then I paid off the entire original $4,500 balance on my last statement with them (after they jacked up the rate to 29.9 percent. Now they just sent me another bill for $24.00, which they said was interest that they hadn't added to the last statement. Hmmmm. Why wouldn't it have been included on my last statement? I just figured it out. They know that if you think you paid off your entire last bill, if they add the interest a month later, you may not look at your bill and pay it. Because you think you have paid off the entire statement and you have a zero balance. Then they can add a $30 late fee and jack up your interest rates again. Scum.

PLEASE BE SURE TO GO TO THE END OF THIS COMPLAINT TO OBTAIN THE FEDERAL AGENCY TO CONTACT ABOUT THIS MATTER.
I, as well as many, many of the complaints I have read here, have had Chase VISA and Chase MasterCard take my monthly payments from 2.0% of the outstanding balance to 5.0% (my account is in excellant standing with with no missed payments, no late payments, and monthly payments always in access of the monthly min. required payment). My experience with these people have been the same as your's, Payoff the balance or accept 7.99% interest with no guarantee that the rate will remain the same for the balance of the loan payment period nor would there be a guarantee they wouldn't increase my rate monthly payment amount anytime they felt like it. In short this is nothing less than a blackmail tactic to force us to break their life-of-the-loan contract with us. These scurrilous, street-level loan-sharking, blackmail tactics cannot be tolerated. But there is a glimmer of hope if we inunidate the following Federal Agency (which is in charge of governing financial institution's activities)with complaints. As with any Federal Agency, the more omplaints they receive the quicker they take action. I had card with Chase for over 3 years. I was in college and after graduation had a hard time finding a job. I called Chase to request that they work with me and help me reduce my APR. Chase blew me off and told me that there was nothing they would do to help me. I continued to make their minimum payments to keep from having my credit report tarnished. I have never asked Chase to remove any late fees (even if they were charged for being a day late).
December 30, 2008. I called Chase and paid the outstanding balance on my card. I spoke on the phone with the representitive, and paid the balance off in real-time. I requested that the card be closed and asked what additional actions were required of me. The rep informed me that I had a 0 balance and that no further action was required. While I had the rep on the phone I attempted to login to the chase web site to see if the account was truly closed. When I did that I got an error that my username/password no longer was valid. After being unable to access their system I figured that the account was frozen and I was done with the company. Now, I got an email last night from chase stating that I had a monthly statement that just posted. I attempted to login and to my surprise my account was working. After looking at the statement - I was charged for a late fee on a 0 balance by chase. I asked them to explain why I owed additional funds on the card.

I received transfer balance offers of 3.99% and 4.99% for the life of the balance and transferred money from other cards to these accounts. Last month, my minimum payment more than doubled and this month an additional $10 monthly service fee has been added. When I called today, the representative stated that they sent out agreement changes in November and that I could get rid of the service fee and 5% minimum (up from 2%) if I simply agreed to have my interest rate upped to 7.99%. The representative agreed that, I know it's not fair, but was apparently helpless in being able to change the process. She had no assurance that another service fee will not be added in the coming months. I have paid my credit cards in a timely manner and have not exceeded my limits. I have kept my end of the deal and am furious that they are simply rewriting their end of the agreement. Short of ruining my credit rating by refusing to pay, what can I do to remedy this??

The age assured me that the credit would be processed to my replacement card. Almost 5 months later, and after approximately 20 hours explaining the situation many times to many customer4 service reps including a half dozen supervisors the issue is still not resolved.I have documentation from American showing the credit was processed, but Chase has told me it was not processed by American, I was told it was sent back to AA because Chase had purged the account, I was told that I had to contact AA to get the refund from them since Chase sent it back. I was even connected to a woman from AA by Chase, chase transferred the call and the rep from AA was Baggage service. This has been a complete run around from Chase and all I ever get is the standard respoonse I am really sorry, and I understand. Even with the supervisors it is the same thing, I will personally investigate this, I will have my Manager work on it and we will get back with you. Of course no one ever gets back. I just checked my February statement to find that my new rate of interest is 27.99%.... which I think is just completely AWESOME!!!! I guess my prior rate of 12.99% and an avg payment of $1500 a month just wasn't enough to fill the pockets of the spineless brainiacs that decided to make this well timed business decision. This appears to be a game of debt, not money management... and in it, everyone loses... except those that run the banks and credit. If you have not noticed, banks have the biggest spread EVER. Savings rates are in the toilet and loan rates have gone relatively unchanged. EVERYTHING favors the banks and them getting their act in gear, they'd rather get more out of the deal instead.

I also had a Chase Bank credit card that was in perfect standing that got slammed with a $10 monthly fee and increased monthly payments. Fortunately, I was able to close the account and transfer the balance elsewhere. The card I transferred it to has a higher APR than the fixed balance transfer rate I was paying at Chase, but I was not going to let Chase get one more cent out of me after that hideous move. Besides, with $10 a month accruing, that low fixed rate they promised effectively was gone. I will never deal with that bank again. What they are doing to people is a crime -- or it should be. People entered into contracts with Chase and agreed to terms that Chase offered! I remember receiving mailings weekly enticing me to transfer a balance at a low fixed rate. It appears those agreements were worthless since they now say they can do whatever they want. What total sleazebags. I will celebrate the crashing and burning of the careers of the executives that made the decision to do this to people.

I understand that class action suits have already been filed and I just want to add my complaint to make sure that Chase Bank is not allowed to get away with their deceptive practices. I have a Chase Bank credit card and accepted a check with a promotional interest rate of 4.99% for the life of the loan, to pay off a car loan. I have been making regular payments of $300.00 per month or more in order to pay off this loan. I have never been late. I do not see how it could possibly be legal to arbitrarily tack an additional $10 finance charge onto my account because they don't know how to manage their funds and to raise my minimum payment from 2 to 5%. This wasn't a problem for me because I was already making substantial monthly payments in an effort to pay off my balance as quickly as possible but this would obviously have a horrendously detrimental effect on customers who had budget constraints. How can they penalize me for being responsible? Obviously they don't know the meaning of the word. What is to stop them from charging us $50 or $100 more a month in, as they describe it, service charge-finance charges,or raising the minimum payment to 10% in an effort to bully their customers into accepting higher interest rates because they can no longer afford to pay the minimum? Smells like grand theft to me. Excuse me,I'm running out of money so I'm going to take yours. That's armed robbery. They are taking $120 of my money for no apparent reason and there is nothing I can do about it? The lady from customer service mumbled something about the current market situation. Yeah, my retirement is tanking also, but that doesn't give me the right to steal from other people. Someone has to stop the banks from making up the rules as they go. I have no interest in paying for Chase's stupidity. They miscalculated how long it was going to take their customers to pay off these promotional loans? Tough. You offered me 4.99% for the life of the loan. There was no fine print that said, but at some point if we get tired of waiting for you to pay it off we're going to start adding fees and raising minimums. SOMEONE HAS TO STOP CHASE!! Please help us. The banks are completely out of control. Don't let Chase get away with this.

In Nov., I made a balance transfer to my Chase credit card for a down payment on a car. It was again for 3.9% for the life of the loan. Because of the new transfer, I knew that my minimum payment would increase but I was already making higher payments so knew that I could handle it. Well, in Jan., I noticed on my statement that my minimum payment tripled and I was charged a $10 service fee as well. I thought there must be a mistake so I called Chase and was told that they had increased minimum payments from 2% to 5% and were now charging a service fee of $10 a month. I said that I hadn't received any notification of this change and was told that letters were just sent out. I still have not received one .I was told that if I can't handle the new payment, I can keep the old payment but my interest rate would go from 3.9% to 7.9% or I could defer payment up to 2 years if I qualified. On December 10th my 70 year old mother had to go in for knee surgery. She is the type of woman who always has paid her bills early and always has paid more than the minimum amount required. She has excellent credit. On December 9th she went into Chase bank in Rochester NY to pay her credit card bill early (before she had received her statement for her January). She told the teller that she wanted to pay her credit card bill early because she was having surgery and knew she would be out of it for the month of January. She asked the teller if it would be okay to pay her January bill early. The teller at Chase bank told her it would be fine, so my mother gave her one of her old statement with her credit card bank account number so the teller could put her payment in for January so that she did not have to worry about it while she was recovering from her surgery.
At the end of January she received her billing statement with a very high minimum payment due saying that she was past due on her January payment. My mother called Chase bank customer service immediately and explained to the Customer service rep that she made her January payment on December 9th because she had knee surgery on December 10th and she knew she would be out of it so she went to the bank and paid early. The woman Customer Service rep at Chase bank said "Well you didn't call use to tell us you were doing this", my mother explained that she went directly to Chase bank and spoke with the teller and she told her she could pay for her January payment early and that it was fine. The customer service representative said "You are supposed to call us,you can't just go to the bank and pay early without calling us to let us know". I can't imagine why my 70 year old mother would do something so CRAZY as to go to the bank the credit card is issued from, ask an employee who works for the company that the credit card is issued from if it's okay to pay early and actually believe the employee who works for that bank is giving her the correct information when telling her that it is fine. Are you following me so far? She went to the bank to pay her January 2009 payment early (In December of 2008), was told that was fine by a Chase bank employee at the bank and she made the payment thinking she had paid her bill early for January. After going around in circles on the phone with the Customer Service representative, she was kind enough to understand what had happend and told my mother in the future she will need to call the credit card company to let them know if she plans on paying early, my mother agreed that she would and told her she didn't know she had to do that, seeing as the CHASE employee at the bank told her something different. She told my mother she could just send in the minimum payment for her February payment and to ignore the extra amount for it being considered a late payment. My mother said I would like to pay extra as I do every month. The Customer Service rep said that's fine, but not necessary. The Customer Service rep said she would keep the fixed interest rate where is was when she signed up for the card. She even sent my mother a letter stating that she took care of the issue and that is was fully resolved. My mother thought that was the end of this ordeal. Today 2/21/09 the new statement came for the March payment. To my mothers surprise Chase bank wanted several hundred dollars more than the minimum payment, plus she noticed the interested rate when up a substantial amount. My mother called Chase bank to speak to a Customer Service Representative; she was on the phone for over an hour being transferred from one rep to another explaining over and over again what had happend. Finally she was transferred to some man who claimed to be the HEAD SUPERVISOR who explained to her that because her payment wasn't made between such and such date in January (but made early- in December) it was considered not paid. He told her that her early payment counted towards the principle, but not towards the payment because... (even though it was paid early & even though the teller at the bank told her it was okay to pay early at the bank and that she credited to her January payment) Your gonna loves this... it wasn't paid between such and such a date in January, so it doesn't count! Let me just explain this... because she paid early and not on the due date it was considered late and she is now being penalized because she went to the bank and paid early and because Chase employees are not educated enough to know that the information they give out at the bank is incorrect. Lets put aside the fact that she has excellent credit, has never made a late payment and always pays more than the minimum amount. Lets put aside that the teller at the bank told her it was okay to pay at the Chase bank and that it was okay to pay early and... the customer service rep she spoke to on the phone the previous time she called sent a letter and told her she fixed the situation and it was all taken care of, this man said all of that is not true. The man who she spoke to tonight after being on hold told her that according to the "fine print" on the contract she signed when signing up for the card it states that the bank has the right to charge her a higher interest rate and increase her minimum payment because she did not pay the extra fee for the late fee the previous month and she didn't pay between such and such date in January. Wait a minute... I thought the Female Customer Service rep from the previous time she called Chase told her to disregard the bill and that she didn't have to pay the extra amount. I heard my mother tell the rep "I would like to pay extra, because I always do" and the rep told her that was fine and that she would adjust the account and she even sent her a letter. Now if you're really confused about this situation, how do you think my 70 year old mother is feeling? I am furious! I watched her face turn red as her blood pressure increased as she spent an hour on the phone being passed on from one rep to the next because no one at Chase bank seems to know what the hell is going on. Except for the man who thinks he is a GOD who calls himself the "HEAD SUPERVISOR". According to him it doesn't matter what anyone at CHASE bank told her... "It's in the fine print". I got on the phone with the BIG supervisor who was as cold and uncaring as they come! He didn't care about what anyone at the bank had told my mother, he refused to give me the name or phone number of the previous woman rep who said she took care of this situation and kept repeating how it was in the fine print if you miss a payment (which she did not do, she paid it early), your interest rate will increase and he cannot change it back to what it was. I said to him "you've got to be kidding me, you're telling me that my mother is being penalized because she made an early payment at one of your banks!" He said that's correct, it's in the fine print. I asked him to transfer me to someone above him, he said he was the head supervisor and there was no one else above him (We'll see about that). I told him I would report them to the Attorney Generals Office, he said it's in the fine print. I told him that he is one of the most insensitive human beings I had ever spoken to; he didn't care he was cocky and thought he was a God with all this power. He didn't try to help out a customer with an outstanding record with Chase bank, a person who tried to do the right thing and pay her bill early BEFORE IT'S DUE DATE because she was having surgery. This guy is a real winner! I will take this as far as I have to and tell the media and anyone who cares to listen that CHASE BANK HAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS - EVEN THE ONES WHO PAY THEIR BILLS... EARLY.

I had a 4.64% interest rate with my Chase credit card with no late payments ever on a balance of approx. 22K. They sent me a small paper in the mail that could of easily been lost with the other junk mail stating that my interest rate will be raised to 9.75% on new purchases and the current balance if I didn't act within a few short weeks. After spending nearly an hour on the phone to India I was instructed that the only way to keep the interest rate that is spelled out in my contract is to cancel my account which I had to do. otherwise the interest rate on the 22K would double my current rate. So, I no longer will be able to use my card BUT my interest may stay the same based on the prime rate plus approx. 1.4%. I now don't have anything good to say about J.P. This raised my monthy payment by $440/mo. I have never been late on a payment. The only option I was given when I complained was that if I were to let them raise my interest rate to 7.99%, my monthly payment would be lowered. This is extortion!

I filed a previous formal complaint on this website regarding Chase and no notification to cardholders regarding not being able to make payments at Circuit City stores. I emailed their customer service my following complaint: I'd like to file a formal complaint regarding paying my monthly chase credit card. Prior to paying circuit city filing bankruptcy, I used to forms of payment for my monthly bill: either in person at Circuit City or I would mail my payment in. I found out yesterday that I can no longer make my payment at Circuit City, without any notice from Chase and my due date on my bill is tomorrow, 2/19. I never pay my bill through electronic forms online or through my checking account. That is my choice and I have been told by representatives through your company over the phone that this is the only option available at this time. I want to know why I can't get an extension on my due date when Chase did not provide me any notice at all that I could no longer make my payment at Circuit City? Isn't customer service important to Chase? Based on my experiences with calling the 800 number on the back of my card, it was made clear to me that there are no other options if I want to get my payment in on time before the due date, I have to use the only service you are offering, which is to provide my checking information. I was also told that there will be a fee if I want to do it over the phone with a representative or if I do it after 4pm on the due date. I asked for an extension on my due date so I could mail my payment in still, my preferred mehtod of payment and was told there would be no extension on my due date and there would be late fee of 35$ if my payment does not get there before the due date. What kind of crappy service is this? Chase is awful and even though I am only one person, I swear I will never go through any credit line that is under the Chase logo. In my short experience with Chase, I seriously regret this experience with your company and affiliates and will do my part to pass on the word to others to avoid Chase at all costs. You have horrible service and it's pretty clear based on the phone conversation with 'Glenda' that there will be no remedies in your horrible service because you already had a meeting about this, per Glenda's words.
I'd like to file a formal complaint and I want this email answered and addressed and I want to know what the next step is in filing my formal complaint. This is completely unacceptable and wrong to try and make the consumer pay a late charge or to pay other fees because Chase failed to provide any notice that I would no longer be able to make my payment at Circuit City. This is your problem, not mine. The least you could do is offer a one time extension on my due date so I could at least mail my payment in. Prior to Circuit City stores going out of business, I would make my monthly payment on my Circuit City balance at the Circuit City store. For my February 2009 payment, I went to Circuit City to make my payment 3 days before the due date and found out from Circuit City that they are no longer accepting credit card payments there. I called the 800 number on the back of my chase circuit city card and found out this is true. I spoke with a lady named 'Glenda' who told me that the only option available is to go to Chase.com and use the automatic check withdrawal feature there. When I expressed my concern about this form of payment and shared that I always pay my bills on time through mailing in a check, I was told I could certainly mail in my check also but there would be a late charge if it was not received before the due date. I told 'Glenda' that there would be no way my check would be received before the due date because that would mean it would need to arrive there within 3 days and that was impossible unless I wanted to pay extra fees to get it mailed faster. She told me that she explained the only option to me and it was my choice if I didn't want to make my payment using that option. I told 'Glenda' that this was not fair to me as the consumer that Chase did not give me any notice at all and now I am supposed to either pay a late fee if I mail in my check as a form of payment or use their automatic withdrawal system on their website to transfer the payment from my checking account to them by the due date. I asked to speak to a manager or supervisor and was told there wasn't anyone available but that I could call back in the morning. I asked for another phone number to file a complaint. 'Glenda' said she could not find one but she said she could give me mailing address. I asked for 'Glenda's' last name and she said Glenda is all you need. I'm making a note on your account regarding this conversation and that you refused to use the automatic check paying system. After this phone conversation, I went to Chase.com and looked for a link to contact them to find out about filing a formal complaint about no notification regarding paying my bill at Circuit City and having to eat up the costs of late fees if I don't use the only method supplied on their website to get my payment to them by the due date. I found the link and typed an email similar to these words here inquiring about how to file a formal complaint. All I want is to make my payment with a check by mail without any late fees or changes in my credit card agreement or grace period. As the consumer, I did nothing wrong and take very good of my credit and always pay in time and pay off balances. I can't help but feel that because of the way things are going with the economay and businesses are going bankrupt, Chase is doing all it can to get their money and extra money with fees and late fees. After reading other's experiences here about Chase and their credit cards, I feel even more reluctant to give Chase access to my checking account. I'm certainly not comfortable with this and will have to pay a late fee as a result and also may lose all of my deferred interest if this payment winds up late. Chase is terrible and I truley hope they go out of business. They deserve it as far as I'm concerned because they clearly do not care about consumers who do care about maintaining good credit.

I signed up for a Chase Visa credit card on the basis of a promotional offer I received in November 2008, which included 0% APR on all purchases through October 2009. The promotion also included a single hard copy check, which included certain fees if used, but the use of which was described as falling under the 0% APR promotional rate.
I confirmed this in a long conversation with a Chase representative on Jan 5, 2009. I wanted to be absolutely certain that if I paid off another credit card balance using the Chase check, that the pay-off would come within the 0% APR promotion. He assured me that it would, and I used the check accordingly. (The use of the check also incurred a flat fee, but I was advised of that, and was willing to accept it as a trade-off for obtaining the 0% APR on the balance.) Lo and behold, the first bill I received from Chase included interest. I called Chase, and was eventually transferred to a Supervisor who advised me the check I used did NOT come within the scope of the 0% APR promotion. I told him this was contrary to what I had been previously told, and that I never would have used the check under those terms. The Supervisor advised me that he and his Manager would listen to a tape recording of the Jan 5 conversation with the Chase representative, and that Chase would honor the check at the 0% APR if the representative had in fact told me that. He said he and his Manager would listen to the recording that same evening. This conversation was on Tuesday, Feb 10. I was told that the Manager, Jay, would call me back either Friday of that week, or Monday, Feb 16, at the latest. Well, I received no call from Chase as of Monday, and called them on Tuesday, Feb 17. At that time I was advised they had no record or notation reflecting the conversation I had had with the Supervisor the previous week -- but they would, now, be willing to put in a request for the earlier, Jan 5 conversation to be reviewed. This review process would of course take another week or so. The problem with this is that all this time interest was accruing on the balance. The more delay, the more I would have to pay. Chase acted negligently and unprofessionally in (i) failing to follow-up and call me back as promised following the Feb 17 phone call; (ii) failing to include any notes in my record of that conversation; (iii) failing to honor the terms of their promotional offer. (Actually, I suspect that they did listen to the Jan 5 conversation, learned that it was in my favor, and decided to conceal this fact because of the consequences -- good for me, bad for them.) I canceled the card, and paid off the balance so no further interest would accrue. To pay off the balance that day, rather than sending a check (the time to process which would have resulted in substantial additional interest (about $100) to be paid off), cost me an additional $14.95 fee. I believe Chase's actions in this matter were fraudulent and dishonest. I am particularly upset that no record was made of the Feb 17 conversation I had with the Supervisor. It is possible that the original representative I spoke to on Jan 5 was misinformed about the terms of the promotional offer, but for a Supervisor to fail to notate an important conversation in my record, or to follow-up with a callback to me as promised, is inexcusable -- at best negligent, at worst, deliberate fraud on Chase's part.

With this in mind we will start to lose everything as we have 3 credit cards with them. They used to be with other companie until they were bought out by Chase. We were never notiifed of this change and I called JP Morgan Chase Bank and the rep told me that due to the financial crisis that the min amount due each month on the balance would be 5% which was 2% prior or we could accept the agreemt of 7.99 % until 2011 and then the rate would go to 28% and my payment would be 2% of the balance. With this in mind we will start to lose everything as we have 3 credit cards with them. They used to be with other companie until they were bought out by Chase. We can't afford this and this will start to hurt our credit score as we don't have this kind of money to pay each month. I'm not sure what to do. I called them again to see about closing the account as we do not use it and they stated it would be 153.00 a month for 60 months @ 12% but this could effect our credit score by closing the account. Can you please help us. We will eventually be forced into not making payments as we do not have enough income to cover these types of practices the credit card companies are doing. We dont want that and also we dont want to lose our house or file for bankruptcy if it gets to be out of control. Like many others in this forum, I was blindsided by Chase's increase on their minimum payments. I have two cards with them, fixed low life of the loan rates that have NEVER been past due, as a matter of fact, they are auto-pay accounts. Between the two of them, they bumped my payments $1000 a month. When I called to complain, the customer service rep tried to tell me they were helping me pay off the balances quicker. This is an absolute outrage, especially given the fact they just received a ton of bailout money to help consumers. The $10 service charge just rubs salt in the wound. I have been paying my Chase credit cards on-line for several months. On February 12, 2009, I got a statement in the mail with a $39 late fee and $2.38 interest charged. However, my records indicated that I scheduled an on-line payment for the full amount ($74.99)from my checking January 20, 2009. I conclude that the web page malfunctioned or internet connection was broken or timed-out and I was unaware. I called Chase and got the same line I've read in several other complaints: they refuse to remove a late fee for any reason. My credit is spotless and I never miss a payment, always pay in full, etc. -- doesn't matter.
The way to think about it is this. Every time you use on-line billpay, there's a chance that something will go wrong. (If you mail it in, your check can get lost in the mail for that matter.) With Chase, the penalties are huge and you have no recourse when something goes wrong. I consider holding a Chase card a liability because I can't tell when they are going to do this, or how often. They seem to be thinking very short-term in grabbing for a few bucks and worrying about losing business later. People with good credit can go elsewhere, but they will keep those poor people who can't pay their balance off in full or obtain other cards.

Then they all cut my available credit in half, giving the impression that I had maxed out my cards. This, in turn, led to them increasing the interest rates and doubling the minimum payments due.

************************************** Our records indicate that a Change in Terms notice was sent to you in November 2008, which advised of the addition of an Account Service Fee and a change to the required minimum payment for your account, effective as of your January 2009 billing statement. Please note that the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) on your account is not changing and you may continue to take advantage of the promotional APR currently in effect on your account. An alternative is available, but it does mean giving up the current APR on your promotional rate balance(s) with no expiration date. With this alternate offer your promotional balance(s) would be changed to a 7.99% Fixed APR. This new rate will remain in effect until the billing statement that includes January 1, 2011. After this date, the APR for any remaining portion of the balance will be the standard purchase APR associated with this account, which is a Variable APR of 27.24%. If your standard APR is a variable APR, the rate mentioned above is the sum of the margin and the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Prime Rate. Variable APRs may vary with changes in the WSJ Prime Rate. Please refer to your Cardmember Agreement for more APR information and other account terms. This alternate offer will suppress the assessment of the monthly Account Service Charge, and we?ll credit your account for the last monthly Account Service Charge assessed. Your minimum payment calculation will also return to the greater of the following: * $10.00 * 2% of the New Balance or * The sum of 1% of the New Balance, billed interest, and any billed late fees. I was informing Chase that if there was another charge, that I want it disputed and be notified because I did not authorized it. Below is the original complaint I sent.
I have called the company twice and my cancellation confirmation with them is: R1208. They have charged me also for Jan 3 2009 for 11.99. I have also called Chase twice to inform that I am disputing this charge. However, Chase has said BOTH times that they can not and will not dispute Third-party automatic deductions even thought I, as the consumer, has been informing them that I did not authorize these charges. Speaking with a dispute service member, he informed me, after I requested to be notified about further charges, that Chase would not do that for such a small charge. Chase should have some ethic business practice to PROTECT their consumers rather than to perpetuate the practice of allowing alleged automatic deductions from third-party companies. It should not hide behind the loopholes of law but rather use the law to protect PEOPLE from fraud. I would like a copy of the law that say that Chase can not dispute third-party charges and please, do not include the words, not responsible for third-party charges as a way to defend the normal business practices. When this dispute is resolve, I will no longer be a customer of Chase or any of its affiliations. I asked to speak with a supervisor and she had one speak with me by the name of Warria Johnson who also rfused to remove the fee and revert my apr to it's original amt. I explained that I was a very good & loyal customer never paying late & that if I didn't get some kind of help I would file a complaint, & close my acct. As a result of 'going paperless' which the company highly encourages, I did not receive prior notice of the change of terms. Thus, I was too late to 'opt' out, which would have meant, closing the account and continuing at the same payment schedule. If I had been able to 'opt' out, my excellent credit rating could have been negatively affected by closing an account and reducing my available credit. My husband accidentally used our Chase Visa card for a cash advance ($120) on 12/12/08. In my next statement, there was a transaction fee of $10 and a finance charge of $1.79. I paid off the statement fully and more -I looked online to see what we actually owed at the time of payment and paid that amount. My new statement shows a finance charge of $1. I called to find out what it was for. The supervisor told me that the payment I sent it gets applied to purchases on the statement, purchases since the statement was made and then towards cash advances. Thank god I sent in more otherwise the cash advance never would have gotten paid! She then said that the $1.79 finance charge never got paid. So, they charged me a finance charge on the finance charge which is the $1 that's showing up on my statement now. She said that finance charges get paid first (before purchases); so, this should be the last month that I see this finance charge.

However, I don't always open this email, as for the last several years it's been the 30th. of each month, not he 25th. as it now is. I always pay in full, so these charges really annoy me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one having to pay these. They did remove the last months charges, after I spoke with a supervisor, but he said that finance charges are still accruing so there will be more on next months statement. I believe they should have to send an explicit email/message when they make such changes. Is there any plan to try and make them do that? It really appears like a shady way to make more money off the consumer, and they have no clear explanation why they did it. Is there any other action I can take? best regards

We are simply shocked that a bank in line to receive a $25 billion bailout by taxpayers contacted our family about raising our two credit cards. We had never missed a payment, and my wife and I both have very good credit ratings, thus we are minimal risk to CHASE. CHASE, on the other hand, is a risk to us as they wrote in the brochure they provided us that the reason they were raising our rate was to ensure their company's profitability. Wasn't the bailout supposed to be about financial institutions freeing up credit? The banks taking the bailout should have been directed to CUT rates to consumers to free up money to circulate in our economy. Instead, we consumers are paying for their bailout AND will be using more of their disposable income to pay higher interest rates.

I have (had) a credit card with Chase with a promotional rate of 2.99% that I made on time payments on and for more than the payment due since opening the account. In January I noticed a $10.00 fee, and the minimum payment tripled so I called to ask what was going on. I spoke with a man who told me that a fee would be assessed on my account unless I chose a new rate of 7.99%. I said no thank you and paid off the balance. This month I received a state showing a balance of $13.80. Ten dollars was the fee and 3.80 was the interest. So I again called and spoke to Sharon first and then Mary the supervisor. They both informed me that I would be charged a $10.00 fee just to have the account open. The only way to end the fee would be to close the account. So I closed the account. Letter Recently mailed to Mr. Jamie Dimon, CEO of Chase:
Mr. Jamie Dimon, CEO JP Morgan Chase & Co. 270 Park Avenue New York, NY 10017 February 9, 2009 Dear Mr. Dimon: Last Thursday, I received a letter in the mail regarding my Chase MasterCard with the fixed APR of 9.99%. Apparently, my fixed APR card is all-of-a-sudden changing to a variable-APR card with an APR of 16.99%, in order to maintain profitability? on my account. Yes, you read that correctly; 16.99! I couldn't believe it either! That's a 7% increase!!! And you know what's worse? Guess how much warning I was given. Well let's see... I got the letter on February 5th, and it takes effect on March 1st. So less than a month! This is ridiculous! While the economy is on a downward spiral, you are taking advantage of people who have been faithful customers and may or may not be relying on their Chase credit cards to stay afloat. I have had this card for about 3 years, and I have never been late on a payment or given any other reason to raise my interest rate. I have been nothing but satisfied with it and your company until now. I wish I had the money right now to pay off my card completely, but I can't. I guess I'll have to deal with this until I can get a $0 balance, and I will be putting everything on my Capital One card until then. After I reach a $0 balance, it will be my goal to never pay another penny of interest on this card. Therefore, you will not be maintaining profitability? on my account. And with an interest rate as absurdly high as this one, I hope and pray that the vast majority of your appreciated customers will be able to do the same. In the mean time, Mr. Dimon, I can't help but wonder... Are you taking advantage of all of your customers like this, or only the ones like me who have been faithful customers long enough to HAVE a fixed-APR card? It is very dishonest to give somebody a card with a $20,000 limit and tell them that their APR is fixed, only to make a drastic change like this with less than a month of notice. And if I don't hear from you, I'll assume you're in the middle of a very important conference in a luxury resort in Hawaii, celebrating with all of your execs the brilliant decision that was made, while your formerly-faithful customers find better ways to buy the things they need. How can they post a service fee for a service I did and do not agree to...the only way to get rid of it is to agree to a new contract...Again for how long will that contract/agreementlast? Last month, Chase sent out a letter to its card members regarding an increase in credit card payment.
I phoned Chase and was told that my Visa card was changed from 2% to 5% on the minimum monthly payment. This amount is based on balance due. The increase has raised my minimum monthly payment on February statement to $426 from $171. I was shocked! I explained to Chase that I could not afford this high increase. No reason was given except that banks are having a hard time. They gave me the option of keeping the 2% minimum payment but I would have to accept an increase from the original 2.99% or 3.99% fixed rate UNTIL BALANCED PAID to the 7.99% card rate. I am being bullied into accepting the higher percentage rate, since I cannot afford the higher monthly payment. When I used one of their checks to put a large balance on at the low fixed rate offered, it was my understanding that it was UNTIL BALANCE PAID. I am very upset with this! I have not used that visa card since applying the large sum several years ago. I have faithfully paid each month on that amount, bringing monthly payments down from over $300 to $170. The implication seems to be that Chase is not making enough money on this card as it currently is.

When I called a representative at Chase, I was told that it was due to the bad economy. When I told her I should have been warned, she told me that something was going out in the mail to me. It has been 3 weeks and I still have not received anything. She told me that I could return to my previous 2% of the balance if I accepted a new 7.99% interest instead of my current 4.99%. There has to be a law against this! I was promised 4.99% for the life of the balance transfer as long as my payments were made on time and not go over my limit. I have never been late and never gone over the limit. I don't understand how they can legally do this. With just one month of the $10.00 service charge added, they had my interest rate last month at over 7.00%. With one more month's $10.00 service charge, the rate will probably average over 8%. They are counting on everyone seeing that you can save by accepting the new 7.99%. They say that they cannot force you to accept the new higher rate, but they are forcing you!

During that time, I paid all my bills, but paid little attention to the actual statements themselves until I was feeling better again. During that time I noticed I was still being billed by Discover card. I called them and they said they had never received the payment from Chase. I called Chase and the supervisor, whose name I don't have anymore, assured me that it was just a technical error, and I should see the payment made in another statement or two. Sometimes these things take time, he said. So I waited nervously for the next statement to arrive. Nothing. I called again, but they again assured me that there must be some mistake. They would look into it and get back to me. They never got back to me. This went on for some time and then I was told that there had been a mistake, but they were terribly sorry...on the credit card agreement, it clearly states that you only have 90 days to submit a complaint. Since I had only talked with people, not written them, they were not obligated to refund me my money. The charge for over $7000.00 remained on my credit card. I was stuck having to pay not only them, but of course, Discover card too. Last month Chase arbitrarily imposed a $10.00 per month service charge because I have not charged anything to the card since the opening promotional balance and now Chase is loosing money on this account. How is that possible? Their cost of funds is less than 1/2 of what they charge me. Everything is completed electronically so costs are minimal. Their own statement reports a 10.11APR. A portion of their answer follows Please be assured that the change in your account terms was not an adverse reaction to information in your credit history. At this time, we're attempting to standardize the interest rates on our credit card accounts. The change to your account terms is a result of our attempt to offer consistent rates to all credit card customers.

My story is the same as everyone else's. Signed up for a balance transfer (high-interest prime-tied private student loan) fixed at 3.99% for the life of the loan. A/O January 1 2009 was assessed a service charge of $10/month and increase in minimum charge percentage from 2% to 5%.
There was a Change in Terms Notice enclosed in my statement of 11/22/08 warning of this breach of good faith, trust, and ethics. This was about 5.5 weeks before it went into effect. The closest mention to an opt-out phrase is this (with regard to the $10 service charge, which they clearly consider to be a finance charge): The account service charge is billed to your account monthly whether or not you use your account, and you agree to pay it when billed. The charge is $10 per month ($210 total annually), and it is a finance charge. The charge is non-refundable unless you notify us that you wish to close your account within 30 days of the date we mail your statement on which the charge is imposed and at the same time, you pay your outstanding balance in full.....If your account is closed by you or us, we will continue to impose the service charge each month until you pay your outstanding balance in full and terminate your account relationship. They also state that the principal factors we considered in amending your account include the APRs and revolving balances on your account. (HMMM - these are not mentioned as potential problem areas in the original transfer offer...and, in my case, they did not change, except that the balance got lower and lower and never went up.) I find this caveat interesting in light of the lottery angle described in an earlier posting. Was it really just our luck that got us all the $10 increase? For me, this represented a whopping 50% increase in the dollar amount of my finance charge. I couldn't help but factor that fact in when I read their reassuring claim: Important: Your APRs will not be impacted by these charges. They really must think we are all stupid. Well, sure enough, on Jan 5, the $10 was posted on the account and raised my existing balance by $10. And guess what, my effective APR, as stated on my January statement is now 5.99%. Compare this to my December statement, which clearly states my effective APR at 3.99%. Is this an example of no impact on my APR? Chase is clearly more stupid than any of us idiots out here.. I would not lower myself to contacting them. I know what they did and so do they, and by what I've read here and elsewhere, it is clear they do not care. So, I got myself a home equity loan for more than double the amount of the balance, at a rate lower than my new non-impacted effective APR and with a monthly payment lower than my new Chase minimum payment, paid off the Chase balance and 3 other credit cards, and got my husband the flat screen he's been aching for...just in time for the Super Bowl. I secured this loan using only my salary (not my husband's), our 50% equity in our house whose monthly payment is $428, and my 757 credit score (never late or delinquent with Chase or any other creditor). Chase is crazy. I clearly will never do business with them again and their reputation is seriously damaged. It is now 4 PM on Feb. 5 and the $10 charge has not yet been added to my $0 balance at Chase. Will check tomorrow to see if it's been added. If and when it is added, I will close the account and get my $10 refund. In the meantime I'll keep the credit line - it gives me a really good debt-to-available credit ratio!!

Unlike your article states that chase has become more user friendly, Chase has raised the interest rate on all 3 of my card accounts to a 12.99 V. One was 7.99 F, the other 2 were 8.99 F. I have never been late with them since they've been open and we also have a checking account and Mortgage with them. I opted out on 2 of them with the exception of the smallest one as that is my overdraft card. When we applied for a mortgage in Nov 07, they lowered all my limits which caused me to have over 50% balances. I tryed to negotiate with them but to no avail. Seema would not even let me speak with a manager. She stated there weren't any on the floor at the time and took my number saying they would call me back in 24 to 48 hours. I then called the number above and spoke with B J Parker who at least spoke with me and correctly closed 2 of my accounts before they were increased. I don't understand the reasoning behind this rate hike. We haven't been late on anything and always at least make the minimum payment ON TIME.

Like most of the people that have written here to complain about Chase and their crooked credit practices, I too have just had this experience with them. I have been a Chase card holder for many years. I have always paid my bills on time, never being late and have paid at least the minimum due or more. Because I was a good customer to them, they constantly sent me offers to transfer balances at lower interest rates. I accepted their offers, paid down the balance and have been in good standings with them. A couple of years ago, I again accepted an offer from them to transfer balances to a lower rate of 4.99%. I have been on time with all payments, and paying more than the minimum. This rate was good for the life of the loan and was a contract with Chase. And what do I now get for being a good customer all these years? A shocking bill increasing my minimum payment from 2% to 5%. This increase is almost impossible for me to be able to pay every month! And, along with that a bonus of a $10 fee every month that they will now be charging me. This fee sounds crooked to me, because on one hand it is called a fee, but on the other hand they call it a purchase (that I did NOT authorize!) so they could add it to my balance owed to them at a much higher interest rate than my 4.99%... Meaning it will never be paid off and keep increasing by $10 until my other balance is paid off. How is this legal?
I called Chase to ask about their $10 fee and the agent told me they needed more money to stay in business, so now I had to pay them to have a their credit card. So my Tax bailout money was not enough for them?? He also said Chase sent notices to me three times that they would be doing this, and this is not true. I was never notified. He then told me if I didn't like it, I was free to opt out by closing my account and paying them what I owed them in full immediately. I then asked about the increase in the minimum payment and why they were doing that to me, their good customer. He told me that Chase wanted to get the money they loaned to me back in their hands as soon as possible, thus the increase. He said the economy was bad, so they needed that money. I thought to myself, he must think I am really stupid Chase wants that money so they can loan it back out to someone else at a much higher interest rate and this is how they are going to do it since they have a contract with me at a lower rate. Again, he told me if I didn't like it, then I could close my account and pay them off. He was very smug and when I told him how hard and unfair his company was being to us he simply said I'm sorry you feel that way' like I'm the one with the problem. But of course he would say that, he can't let on if he thinks it's wrong because he wants to keep his job. And by the way, he never offered the option of taking the fee off if I agreed to a higher interest rate like some here have said they were offered. This has made me ill and I feel violated, as well as everyone else here must feel. As long as Chase gets away with it, what will stop other Creditors form doing this? Chase is paving the way to bring down the rest of America to financial ruin. Isn't that a lovely way of saying thank you for the billions in bailout money? I don't know what I am going to do about my situation, or what I can do but when I do close my account, I will NEVER do business with Chase again. I am telling every friend and relative I have about what Chase is doing, because if they can do it to me, what's to stop them from doing it to them? I suggest everyone this has happened to to tell everyone, get this dirty practice in the public eye. I plan to write to the Federal Reserve Consumer Help site. I also plan to write to our US President and senators to let them know how the company they are bailing out is treating the taxpayers. I plan to write to cable news channels and newspapers. I think everyone Chase is hurting needs to be heard, voice your opinion tell the world.

My credit score was gradually improving as I kept my payments up and payed extra on my bill each month. Now the good part. I recieved a notice from Chase saying there was a mistake on my disclosure and in fact they were increasing my APR to 23.99% or Prime Rate plus + 18.99% Variable Rate whichever is greater. Thats a 9% increase in finance charges. This is ridiculous. They have decided that the life is up.
They offered their customers 3.9% life of the balance loans on credit cards years ago. Now, after paying for 5 years at the rate they have changed the plan and added a fraudulent $10 monthly service fee when no service was requested nor accepted, to make the effective APR go to 6.5% . They also decided to change the min payment from 2% of the unpaid balance to 5% of the unpaid balance. They told me, in a phone call, that they could take off the monthly service charge if I sign a new contract and agree to 7%. Isnt that extortion- adding a charge and offering to remove it for agreeing to higher interest? Consumer affairs web site is full of similar complaints from scores of angry customers. At least one class action suit has been filed against them. Could they change it again and increase the service fee to $50/month and make the minimum payment 25% of the unpaid balance? They must not be allowed to change the terms of the original agreement. Please insist that an injunction be placed on them barring any changes to the original contract that was to be in place for the life of the balance until a court can decide whether or not is legal for them to breech the contract.

The increased monthly minimum is to help me pay off my card sooner. I was surprised that they came right out and said they werent making money on me...so I have to pay more. This sounds like a bait and switch. It seems unethical (but I guess not illegal) to get a customer hooked on one rate and then decide you werent making enough money and start charging new fees. I'm very good at keeping records and know I have the original terms of my transfers but I'm guessing they probably have clauses saying they can change the rates anytime they want. Still, given the economic bailouts by the government, I would think someone would be putting a stop to banks doing things like this when they know now is the worst time to be increasign payments rates. I'm not able to afford the high payments but I do not want to pay the extra money, in rate increase, to a bank that treats it's customers this way. In January 2009, I noticed our minimum balance payment went from 2% to 5% of the unpaid balance. Also, Chase added a $10 fee. Looking at the bottom of our statement, the APR listed is higher than our agreement (our new rate is above 9% APR). I called and talked to 3 different reps. They offered to let us go back to the 2% minimum payment if we gave up our 3.99% APR and accepted a 7.99% APR until 2011. Also the reps stated they would remove the $10 monthly fee if we accepted the higher rate. I declined and told them we paid a fee up front to get the 3.99% rate and plan to keep it. The reps tried to tell me that we still have our 3.99% APR with a $10 fee added due to the economy. However, when I look on our statement, it shows that our rate now is above 9% APR. There is no way this could be legal and they are not abiding by their end of the agreement. We have not been late on one payment with this account and almost always pay more than the minimum payment. We plan to pay off and close this account and never do business with Chase again. We feel we were lured in and lied to. We refuse to do business like this. It is very sad news that our tax dollars are going to support companies like Chase that can be so deceitful to their good honest customers. I inquired as to whether or not they could at least lower my interest rate while I am struggling with my finances. Bottom line: No. They would not even revue my account (which has had an excellent rating in the past) because my balance was $20 over the limit (convenient for them, they add a $39 penalty to the account for that.) Last month I set up automatic payments with them and am scheduled for a minimum payment in a couple days - which obviously they can see on my record. I don't expect any bail out. I just needed some help with the interest rate and it occurred to me that, in the midst of the current economic crisis in the US, they would take my need seriously and extend some kind of consideration. No. Their reason for not reviewing the account was based on the fact that my last purchase brought the balance $20 over the limit. My question is ... in the past, purchases were declined if it brought the account over the limit. So why not my last purchase? I think these credit card companies let such purchases go through so as to generate, yet, another fee in their favor. And with the interests rates falling on everything else, WHY is the government not making the credit card companies lower the rates they are chargning consumers?? It is highway robbery. I have had a 3.99% & 4.99% promotional rate for life of the loan of this card for a while. I don't use the card only make the payments plus the finance charges to avoid any added money onto what I owe.
My recent statement reflected a $10.00 monthly fee plus an increase of my 2% payment of the loan amount ($7,688.00) to a 5% of loan amount. I was told by rep that all who carry a 5.99% apr or lower will have the change. I could opt out of the promo and the $10.00 monthly charge by accepting the 7.99%. I didn't do that as of yet. I try to figure that $120.00 yearly and 5% compared to the 7.99% and I think I will still be coming out better saying with what I have. Even though the payments are more than double I an still make the payments and still be cheaper than if I change to the 7.99%. What do you suggest? BTW- I do have an offer for 3.99% for life of the loan where I don't have to use the card each month to keep the promo. But I did a research on them on the internet and it was not good.

I spoke to the Chase rep and explain to her that I previously spoke to another rep prior to paying off the card to inquir about finance charge and was told that a finance charge may or may not be applied since the balance due will be paid off in full and if I do get a statement for solely a finance charge to call back and request to have it be remove and a rep will be able to remove the finance charge. However today I spoke to Carlie and was told that no matter if I paid the balance in full and my account is close I still will be charge finance charge and have to pay it and they cannot remove the finance charge. I ask to speak to a supervisor and was told there is nothing they can do I just have to pay the finance charge. I also notice on the back of my statement states We accrue periodic finance charges on a transaction, fee, or finance charge from the date it is added to your daily balance until payment in full is received on your account, well my question is payment in full has been received on my account so why am I being charge finance charges for over a hundred dollars for a close account I paid off in full and after their rep told me it will be remove if I was charge. This is just another way to swindle more funds out of consumer and also if that is the case I guess once the finance charge is paid I will be charge another finance charge for the first finance charge. The reps statment as well as the statement on the back of the bill contradicts each other by stating one thing and meaning another. To put a long story short I will like to have this finance charge remove from the account and bring the acount to a zero balance as what it should be. I have also written a letter to Chase Card Member Service on this matter.

What a mistake! I wrote out the check and deposited it. I just received my first statement from Amazon/Chase Business Account, and to my surprise and chagrin, they charged me a fee which put me over my limit. This in turn caused an overlimit fee of $39, but even more importantly, it 'voided' the 4.99% interest rate. The statement now showed that my rate was 27.24%!!!! I called Customer Service immediately to see what they could do. I was informed that they could do nothing about it. They would not raise my limit (it would only have to be raised about $300) to accommodate the additional money that THEY charged me, nor would they consider waiving the fee or lowering my rate as a one time courtesy. Basically the attitude was, too bad. I am outraged by this bait and switch operation and I have complained to the Federal Reserve Consumer Help Board.

Same story as all the others..
CHASE BANK IS BEHAVING LIKE A LOAN SHARK - New $10 fee, or, the increased rate from 3.99 to 7.79. Same explanation from the phone reps, this is due to the economy, and that Chase needs to build revenue So they are targeting the Perfect Paying customer, who has not increased their debts to Chase. We were told we only had option A or B The new $10 fee, or the higher interest rate. We told them we would take OPTION C. We would pay in full, less the $10 fee and close the account. The phone rep told us we would still be charged the fee and Late fees on top of that. I wrote a lengthy letter to Chase, including our payment, less the fee, which I mailed to special address for disputes etc. We told them we were taking OPTION C at our discretion, since we never received any advance notice from them regarding a change in terms. Fortunately, our balance had reached a low enough level that we could pay it off in full, from the savings we were hoping to use for vacation we've never had. And now thanks to Chase, we are credit card debt free. But TWO WEEKS AFTER PAYING IN FULL, we received a letter from Chase, stating their regrets, and suggesting we call to see if their is anything else they can do to possibly re-open our account. They made a point to mention in this letter, that we STILL HAD A REMAINING BALANCE OF $10. This fired us up a bit, so we had to call again, and request a supervisor. The supervisor finally agreed to waive the remaining $10 fee balance. (yet to be confirmed in writing). She had the nerve to defend Chase by stating that we had the pleasure of benefiting from the low rate up until now. My heart breaks and worries for all the others who have fallen victim to these new actions by Chase. The increased mimimum payment can put many good paying customers over the edge. We would be suffering as well, if this had taken place just a year ago. I have written letters to Chase, and some Media watchdogs, and the Dept of Treasury, and State Senator. I find this FEARFUL BECAUSE... If Chase Bank is allowed to take this action, then what's to stop all of our Lenders from suddenly becoming Loan Sharks? If this sort of thing is allowed, and we suddenly open all of our statements one day to find similar new terms applied...... then whatever hope remains for the economy to hang on will be gone. The effects of such a possibility would be earthshattering. The banks think they have problems now? All of us are paying for the economy everywhere we turn, besides the tax dollars being used for the bailout. Lost 401k's, and higher living costs from fuel, groceries, healthcare, not to mention worrying if our jobs will last. Practices such as this simply cannot be allowed to happen. I hope everyone writes letters, and sends them to many recipients.

Last year, we transferred about $20,000 to a low interest offer from Chase from other credit cards. In January, Chase raised our minimum payments from 2% to 5%, and tacked on a $10.00 per month charge. We cannot afford to pay the 5% per month, so they are putting us in a very bad position. When we called Chase and told them we entered into a contract with them, they said basically, too bad. The person on the phone I talked to said Chase wasn't making enough money, so they tacked on the $10.00 charge and upped the monthly payment. How are they going to make more money by forcing us to pay $900.00 per month? This MUST be illegal. How can credit card companies get away with this? I got the minimum monthly payment increase to 5% of the balance, which doubled my monthly payment. I also got the $10 per month “service fee tacked on which is at a higher rate and thus increases my APR overall. All of this when I too had a set rate agreed upon with Chase for balance transfers. I also got the offer of a 7.99% rate to be “locked in if I agreed to it that would supposedly freeze my account in the future and make me immune to any further account changes. Yah right… that was the same agreement I had with them when I agreed to transfer some other balances to their card in exchange for a “low set rate. I know they could care less about one little customer, but this is what their fraudulent practices will cost them financially in terms of this one little customer as I immediately cancelled my card and refuse to ever do business with them again. 1 – they will lose the monthly finance charges I paid faithfully on my account as I will be getting a loan from my credit union today and paying off their card by the end of the week (this new loan will be at a slightly higher rate, which I could care less about considering how badly I have been treated by Chase), 2 – they will be bad-mouthed to everyone I know and thus lose many future potential customers, 3) I refuse to consider financing the new home purchase that I am considering through them, and 4 – the new car I have my eye on will not be financed through them. As I said… I am sure they could care less about me (that is pretty apparent), but I feel better at least knowing that I will be costing them thousands of dollars in the future in lost business.

This sounds completely illegal to us; we paid a large transfer fee on the front end to get the good interest rate. We always made our payment on time and it was always more than the minimum. Last Tuesday we got our monthly statement and the minimum payment had jumped from to two percent of the balance to five percent. In addition, we were charged a $10 fee. When we called the company we were told that the only way to return to the previous minimum payment and avoid the monthly $10 fee was to agree to allowing them to almost double the interest rate. Wednesday we received the statement from Chase on a card that is used occasionally to pay for a catalog or online purchase. We pay that balance when we receive the bill. We were charged the $10 fee on this card also. The company's response on this was they aren't making any money on the account because we pay it off so they will be charging $10 per month for us to have credit available. The only way to avoid that is to cancel the card. Isn't this a breach of the original contract that was in effect when we transferred the balances? We were told by another rep that the previous APR was reinstated and it would show up on the next billing statement. NOPE! It arrived with a 10.24%, much higher than what we were told. Called again. Another rep said that our previous APR was never reinstated, and was not likely to be. LIES!! Also, on the statement appeared the 'missing' December payment. It was posted on January 10, 2009--a month after the bill was sent. We believe that our payment was held up at Chase, just to create the illusion of a late payment and to generate more income for themselves. Can't prove a thing, though!! Suspicious and unethical--absolutely!! Legal--not sure!! We've never been late on a single payment and have always paid more than the minimum due. We are in the process of transferring our balance to another company. These kinds of situations deserve more scrutiny by someone with the knowledge and guts to pursue it. This isn't right, and these kinds of problems are happening to so many people. But what can be done?????

I have a balance of about $15,000 with a 3.99% rate guaranteed until balance is paid in full. No delinquencies; good credit. Minimum payment of 2% ea mo. ($300) Chase has arbitrarily decided to raise my minimum payment to 5% which more than doubles my monthly payment to $700. When I called they said if I couldn't afford the $700 (which I can't) then they would be happy to increase my rate to 7.99% and allow me to maintain the 2% minimum payment program until January 2011 and add a $10 monthly finance fee to my bill. This amounts to blackmail.

We received our Chase statement for the month of Feb 2009 and were shocked to see that our loan payment had doubled from $300 to $602 . We had a 3.99% for the life of the balance .
We called an associate at Chase and were told that the banks couldn't deal with the low rate of interest without additional charges . When we told her we had never missed a payment, and that we are retired and on a fixed income ,she pointed out that we could lower the payment plus take of the $10 service fee off if we took a 7.99%

Same as everyone else who thought they locked in a low interest rate until the loan was paid off. As far as I am concerned, we all entered into a contract until the loan was paid, and Chase has breached the contract.

I have been a Chase card holder for about ten years. During this time I had a master card as well as my current visa card. I received several offers from them during these years for very attractive rates, which I took advantage of without any problems. After I paid off my master card, I left it open with a 0 balance on it. I receive an offer on my chase visa for a 3.99% life of the loan balance transfer or deposit the checks into my checking acccount and use them as a personal loan to myself. I took advantage of this offer because I was opening a business and this was a much better rate than my bank could offer. I have been paying on this account for more than fours years and have not been late or in default. They have lowered my line of credit several times and closed my master card account about a year ago. Chase was not the only credit card company that I utilized in financing my business venture. There are 3 others who all have low interest life of the loan rates.
I received my statement for January and noticed an increase in the amount of my payment which amounted to a $300.00/mo increase plus, a $10.00/mo maintenance fee which was being charge to my account at the rate of 27.24% I called to inquire about this and was given the following explanation. Due to the current financial crisis, chase felt it necessary to review all the accounts of card holders who had low interest rates for the life of the loan that were under the 5.99% rate. I expressed my displeasure at this action, and stated that due to my current personal situation (health) I was unemployed and this was beyond my means. They indicated that it was within their right to change the terms at any time; it was stated in their agreement and I should have read it. I was so mad that I threaten to pay them at the rate of $5.00 per month, at least I was making an attempt to pay. At this point, I was advised that if I did not send the required payment due, my account would go into default status of 29.00% and they would take legal action to collect the amount due.I hung up very angry. I tried to get an answer as how to resolve this problem and did I have any legal rights to hold them to the original agreement. No-one could provide me with an answer. Time was growing short before my payment was due. I called back to see if there was something else that could be done. I was given the choice of going to a higher interest rate 7.99% that would be locked in for 2 years (Jan 2011) then it would adjust; also maintain my current monthly 2% payment and eliminate the $10.00/mo maintenance fee, or I could keep the 3.99% rate with a 5% payment and retain the $10.00/mo maintenance fee. The choice was mine. When I explained that my other credit card companies had not done this why were they? They said that they could not speak for them, but they were being mandated by the federal government to take this action. I've tried to search out other companies who are still offering the low life of the loan rate and there are several that are listed on the web. However, I am not able to move the balance. I am not looking to open another account to go further in debt, all I want to do is move this balance from chase and close my account for good. IHope that there is a company out there that would be willing to take my balance at a low life of the loan rate. and provide the same offer to other chase card holder as well Speaking for myself, I would like to know if there is an attorney who would be interested in starting a class action law suit. I am sure that others would show the same interest

The same as everyone else. I was shocked when I opened my Chase statement. I'm already in tears just worrying about losing my job because of the economy. Where I currently work, everyone has been laid off so far except for me and my supervisor. As is I make less than $10.00 per hour. Now I'm faced with Chase's new Summary on my credit card statement with a NEW auto payment due. I was paying by auto-pay from my checking account. They where taking 2% of the total balance. Then on my most recent statement, they decided to go to 5% which almost tripled my amount due. In addition they are now taking a $10.00 service charge. I have impeccable credit and have never defaulted on a payment.I said I can't afford to make this huge payment. So they told me I can get the 2% back, but it will now be at a 7.99% rate instead of the 3.99% until the balance is paid. How can they do this? Is this even legal? We have to stick to our end of the bargain, or else rates go up, but then rates went up anyways. So, I need to know is this legal for them to do? What if they change their minds again and again and again?

I have a Chase Credit Card, the only thing I have ever used this for, was to consolidate some bills, I sent in a check for 18000.00, that had a 3.99% until the balance was paid off. I have never used this card for anything else.
I have paid more than the minimum and the finance charge every month, until this month, My balance is down to 10,239.99. I opened my bill to pay, and notice I was being charged a 10.00 Service charge/Finance Charge and my minimum payment has went to 511.00 monthly. I thought this has to be a mistake, I called and behold I was connected to a supervisor right off the bat, and she stated, that they had sent me notices on 4 or 5 seperate occasions, stating that they were not going to honor the original terms and change them. I told her I could not pay 511.00 monthly, that this was like being slammed. She was cordial, but told me the only thing she could do was put my rate at 7.99 percent and waive the service charge monthly and I could pay 2%, my service charge of course will double. I told her I had never received anything like this and thought how unfair this was, that I had never been late, paid more than the minimum and had always honored the original

Several years ago I accepted a 3.99% lifetime balance transfer offer from Chase Bank, which I accepted. I have never been late on a payment, always paid more than the minimum due and I maintain an excellent credit score.
Yesterday, I received my monthly statement from Chase and was shocked to learn that my minimum monthly payment has changed from $239 (2% of balance) to an unaffordable $585 (5% of balance), plus a $10 monthly fee at 5.24%. The Chase representative that I contacted said that the only option available to me, if I wish to get a 2% minimum monthly payment term, was to agree to a 7.99% interest rate, expiring in 2011. What will stop from changing the terms again? Chase is engaged in a form of extorton! I believe they would like to have some their customers make late payments so that they can increase the interest rate to as high as 29%. I find it unconscionable that Chase is able to place this burden on its' already financially stressed customers. Since the U.S.taxpayers are footing the bill for some of the bad decisions made by banks like Chase, I think they should be taken to task for their unethical treatment of the loyal customers. These are very challenging times for many and I want to do the honorable thing and pay my debts but Chase may make bankruptcy an option I may have to consider Please help. Thank you

On September 29, 2008, I was offered a balance transfer offer from Chase for 0% finance fees until August 2009 with monthly payments to be 2% of my balance. I accepted that agreement and transferred a large balance, paying $199 for this. Approximately 30 days later (in my November 2008 statement) I received notice of a change in terms to my account. A $10 per month finance fee (stated as a FINANCE FEE in Chase's written change in terms notice) and my minimum payment will increase to 5% of the balance amount monthly. As I had transferred a large balance, my monthly payment would now be $1,000 a month. When I called Chase they tried to bait and switch me to accepting 7.99% finance charges but I could keep the 2% min. balance payment with no $10/month finance fee. I declined. I asked if ALL Chase card members were getting the $10/month fee billed to them and Ms. Sherry Belanger stated, only the ones that make balance transfers! I was lured into making a balance transfer with Chase under false advertising, then directly targeted with additional fees and an increase to a nearly impossible monthly payment requirement. I never would have done this balance transfer to begin with! Predatory, unethical, false advertising, illegal and immoral business practices and absolutely frightening that they seem to have the power to just change the terms of an agreement and strong arm consumers caught in their grips. If Chase is not stopped, all other credit card companies will follow. I have filed the following complaints; BBB of Delaware, IL (Chase Exec.Office) and in my state, the Federal Trade Commission, Attorney General/Dept of Financial Institutions in DEL,IL, and my state and will file a complaint shortly with the Comptroller of the Currency 202-874-4700. Everyone needs to take these action for results!

My complaint is regarding Chase Credit card's service charge of $10.00 monthly on low interest credit cards and the tripled minimum payment. i.e. My payment went from approx. $75.00 to $188. The original interest was for the life of the debt. This new service fee is listed under finance charges. So instead of paying approx.$19 finance, it is now $30.00.I have 2 cards with similar balances. My payments on those 2 cards have jumped from $150.00 to almost $400.

I just found out today that my minimum Chase Card Payment went from 2% to 5% along with the added $10/month service charge. We have been early with EVERY payment, and even paid more than minimum to get the card paid off so we would be able to handle the financial crisis better. After my wife called the Chase rep, we learned the same thing that all of you have already posted.
This is a sad time for this country. Chase receives a $25 Billion taxpayer bailout from you and me so that they can pull out of this financial crisis. They in turn stick it to you and me again by changing the agreement on our credit cards, and then top it off with a $10/month service fee. We are being robbed people. This whole country is being stolen right out from under our feet. Learn about Chase, and how they brought the Federal Reserve into being. A great book to read is The Creature from Jekyll Island by G. I took advantage of two, of several, offers for balance transfer or purchase loans of 3.99% and 4.99% commencing circa 1/2006. I agreed to pay at least 2% of loan balance monthly. I was notified, circa 12/2008, that my minimum payment would be 5% of loan balance and that an additional $10 a month would be added to the invoice to be charged an intrest rate of 11.99%. My opt out offer was an increase of interest on the base loan to 7.9%, however, only for one year I believe. Apparently The life of the Loan has little meaning.
