About BrightWay

OneMain Financial, best known for its personal loans, also offers two credit cards: BrightWay and BrightWay+. These cards are currently available for select customers, but OneMain has plans to expand access soon. Cardholders get unlimited 1% cash back and can qualify for a reduced annual percentage rate or increased credit limit when they make six consecutive payments on time. The annual fee on a BrightWay card ranges from $0 to $65.

    I thought this was a great card at first. They give you the motivation to make timely payments in order to receive rewards. The interest rate is high but one of the rewards is lowering the rate after making timely payments. Con: I paid my card off before the closing date and received a bill for 63.27. I was surprised because the card was paid off. I called customer service to try to get this reversed and the CSR said it had to be paid before the closing date. He looked at the account and said you paid it off on the 17th and the closing date was the 18th. That just confirms what I am saying. He goes on to add if I don’t want another charge to pay it now or before the 18th of next month.

    If I did that this month, this means you are going to do it to me again next month anyway. How is it 63 dollars in Interest on zero balance? I spoke to a supervisor and got nowhere with him. He insisted there was nothing they could do even for a customer who had never been late or missed a payment. So much for customer appreciation. I am going to cancel this card before they charge me again! If you are desperate then this is the card for you, but you will never stop paying!

    Please do not get this card, these people are a fraud, this gotta be a personal own business with a bunch of foreigners ripping off Americans and they laughing about it, surely there's something that can be done to shut these people down. I'm surely gonna find out what can be done,. If anyone reading this please do not get this card. Please don't be hard headed, I gave them a one star rating but actually they are a zero. They are not even qualified for one star rating. Please believe me people, please do not get this card.

    Do not get this card. Has been the worst experience I have ever had. If you want to get cheated out of your money go ahead. Customer service is bad. Lost card. Cancel it after issues. Glad to be out of this mess.

    If you update your address, they require "for your security" to EMAIL an image of the front AND back of your Driver's License, which is the opposite of secure. They may or may not tell you about this absurd requirement when you update your address over the phone (which is the only way you may do so) and the only way to find out this risk-to-your-identity style process is required, after waiting for your card for a month, is to call again. The app is not capable of doing anything, everything has to be managed by calling in, yet good luck getting ahold of anyone or receiving the correct information.

    HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION. I pay perfectly. Without notice, they turned my card off due to the need for a physical address. Never a call or notice asking me to update it. No letter, and the app is very basic with no way of updating your information. I have plenty of other cards. DON'T USE THEM!!!

    One year I've had this card and paid every time on time. They just added the annual fee, which put me over limit, then IMMEDIATELY suspended my account and contacted Experian to say I went over the limit! Score dropped 23 points. Wow. Just wow. At least Indigo, Milestone, etc never blamed ME when THEIR yearly fees put me over the limit. Tacky, real tacky. Won't be using this card again.

    They speak English but don’t understand it. If you make your payment on the day it’s due or any extra payments you don’t get credit for on time payments. It’s a crappy card that lures you into thinking you can better your credit status. It’s a lie!

    Don't get this card. If you make a purchase of $700 in a month you have to pay the whole $700 in your next bill. If not you have to pay interest and a late fee so make sure you have $769 to pay in one go. I don't know why is it a credit card if you have to pay the whole amount at once. Get other cards not this one. It was the worst mistake I had done.

    Had the Brightway Card for 11 Months. Paid my balance in Full Every Month... Early. They doubled my credit limit. Then the TROUBLE STARTS. Paid my card in full before traveling. The Check Cleared as usual the next day. Then they froze my Credit Card for Review. For what!!! Paying your Bill every month and on time? Then I have to speak with a FOREIGN Customer Service Center where English is their 3rd Language. After spending 53 minutes on hold and I did hold, I spoke to some arrogant and indifferent credit analyst who said ... "Your Account Looks Great. I have unlocked your account and you can use your Card in 10 Business Days!!!"

    What they do not understand is that I have other Credit Cards... 13 to be exact. All of which I have had for 5 years or more and ALWAYS work! They think that they are doing you a favor by giving you their Card! I only signed up for this Piece of Trash Card, because Nerd Wallet kept sending me offers and incentives to which I finally succumbed. But as a Transactional Customer (5 Stars), I am a Bank's Dream! So when you get a Credit Card that you can not depend on and goes out of their way to INCONVENIENCE YOU rather than REWARD you and THANK YOU for your business, This Credit Card is NOT something that you want in your financial arsenal.

    Card works as advertised. Great for those trying to rebuild credit. Initial credit limit is higher than most cards for those with less than perfect credit. App is attractive and easy to use. Milestones are easy to achieve and rewarding.

    I activated my BrightWay card less than a month ago and I've already paid it off and closed the account. Very not nice experience!!!! I set up autopayments for was due monthly. The app accepted my bank info and gave no indication that my bank was not accepted. When the due date came around I got a notice that I was past due and that my payment was returned to my bank. I called my bank and they stated there were no transactions with Brightway. I had to pay the annual $75 fee a $25 late fee (I did my part --- it being late was on them) and I paid the monthly minimum due of $25. Shysters! So less than a month and they got $100 out of me and I never used the card for a purchase. Absolutely shameful and fraudulent. Not to mention the whole mess with them caused my credit score to drop 60 points. Stay away if you can. There are way better starter credit cards out here that don't cause you grief like these guys do!

    Horrible offshore customer service. Brutally uncaring and mean. Would not put US on the line. Laughed at me when. I needed them to help. No regard for current my business or future business. Annual fee sucks.

    I did not received my card. I have spoken with customer service 4 times so far and have been given 4 different answers. Twice by supervisors. They expect me to make the payment on time and I still do not have a card. It has been over 35 days. I would strongly advise to avoid this company at all costs.

    I decided to transfer my BrightWay credit card balance of $1,600 to a new card I had just opened. Two weeks after the payment was sent to BrightWay, the payment still had not posted. I verified with the new card that payment was in fact sent and then when contacting BrightWay, I was told they were not going to authorize the balance transfer and instead offered me a token small rate reduction. I didn't know this is even legal. In fact my new cc company said they had never heard of this happening before and I had to request a claw back of the payment.

    The reason BrightWay gave the new card for rejecting payment was an "incorrect" account number, which was different than what they told me. The next day I filed a complaint with the CFPB, who then notified BrightWay that a complaint had been opened. I received a rather unpleasant call from BrightWay last week saying they were aware and were looking into it. Then today I received an email saying I had missed a payment and had a late due balance. I checked my account and verified that I had set up auto pay for the minimum due each month and verified that my last payment was in fact paid on time, so I assumed it was simply a clerical error.

    When I called to clear it up the BrightWay agent blamed it on my bank and said they charged my account for the minimum $55 auto payment but my bank only transferred $37, which was the amount from the previous month. This is quite simply beyond absurd and was clearly an attempt by them to either retaliate for the complaint I filed or extract a late payment. I had to agree to make an $18 payment for them to agree to waive the late fee they were illegally charging me. I once again asked the agent to confirm that my account was set to auto pay for the minimum amount due each month, which he did.

    Therefore, I asked him if he understood that this verifies that it could only have been their fault, but he still tried to blame the bank for not remitting the "correct" amount. I told him I was going to file another complaint with the CFPB because I have a strong feeling they were retaliating for the first complaint I filed. In the meantime, I cancelled my auto payment and will manually pay the balance due each month until it's paid off and I can close this shady account. I have four other credit cards and never once had a single issue with any of them. Stay away from these dishonest people and their shady business practices.

    Was approved for a card in November. It never came, so I called in December and customer service verified my address and issued a new card, that also never came. In February I called again and they said they didn't include my apartment number, so that's why it didn't come, They issued yet a new card. I received this one and activated it. Went to use it that day and was declined. Called customer service and they said a payment was due two days ago on a card I JUST received and activated, So now I'm late on a payment for a card I didn't even have due to their errors. They were completely unwilling to work with me or help.

    Make payment of 250.00 and after 8 days still not reflected in balance summary. Don’t get this card. Customer service is non existent and email inquiries takes a week for half a response. Have called at least thirty times. Can’t get thru to human and get disconnected.!

    The worse card possible. I was disconnected from the customer service queue several times. I continue to get declined everywhere I go and have to use a different card. It is incredibly embarrassing. DO NOT GET THIS CARD!

    First thing …I make a payment and it wouldn’t go through until due date and got late fees! My account had been blocked due to fraud alerts. They were supposed to send a new card that I requested since August and nothing yet!! So I called and no one ever knew anything about ANYTHING! The manager said I had to send my bank statements and copy of ID and full address to an email. Told him that didn’t sound right. He explained that they needed to make sure the credit card account was mine. Even tho I already gave all info to verify everything with them. They said they couldn’t do anything to help unless that got that information. Scared as heck I sent info and and email got rejected saying that email was not a valid email.

    I called them and got the same story I needed to send in to a different email. I explain to them the email that was given by a manager didn’t work. She gave me an updated email and guess what? It didn’t work it. Came back with no domain and email was not real! They can’t help me! I can’t use my card and can’t help to take block of card but are ready to make sure they get their payment!!! I've only had this since April and the balance never goes down due to late fees, etc. I’ve made every payment every month but can’t use my card and the balance is still the same from the One charge I’ve used the card for!! DON'T GET THIS CARD!! You won’t get anywhere trying to get help with your account. Oh and expect to wait a longggg time for your replacement card!!

    I literally just had a supervisor yelling at me on the phone Mr Jonathan ID # **. It's been 2 months and I haven't received my credit card. They reported a late payment to the credit bureau. When I was trying to explain to him I can pay, but I would like to have access to my card, he simply kept overtalking me and repeating what terms and conditions are and NEVER let me finish a sentence. Then after a 48 min phone call he just hung up on me. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS CRAP AS WELL AS THE COMPANY.

    I made a $50 payment from my bank account toward the card. There was $1,000 in my checking at that time. 11 days later I received a notification from Brightway that the $50 payment was rejected. I called and asked why, since there was no issue with my bank - my bank statement showed the money being debited. Customer service said they didn't know why it was rejected and would mail out a reason within 3 to 5 business days. 7 business days later I called back, having not received their explanation, and was told the payment was rejected due to insufficient funds. Brightway just stole my money and made up a fake reason. I wonder if there's a class action suit waiting in their future.

    Do not get this credit card. Everything started off really good. But everything is going downhill with the company and customer service. You have the option to pay with checking or a debit card via the IVR. When you use your debit card to make payments, your available credit is not available until 5-7 days later. Do not get this credit card if you are planning on paying your complete balance at the end of the billing cycle. Your credit card is constantly being locked due to security issues, which is a way as I feel to keep you from using your credit card. I also have a Capital One credit card with zero issues.

    Honestly, if you will only use the card once in a blue moon, then it’s fine. If you actually want to use the card regularly, it’s awful. Balances take forever to update. They constantly flag things as suspicious and so you constantly have to call to get the card unblocked. Plus, if you buy one or two things, it will report your balance as being in the negative and will take forever to update it to what it really is so you can’t actually make use of the full credit limit. And whatever credit limit they give will be low to begin with. It’s just annoyance after annoyance with this card.

    I haven’t used credit in a while, so I opened this card because I knew it was easy to get and I also opened a card with Capital One and the Capital One card has given me zero issues, whereas with this card, the issues are constant. I have pretty much decided to just use this card to make one small purchase of Skittles every month going forward and then pay it off, just so that it stays open and reports to the credit bureau. Any hope of actually using the card like normal is gone.

    I may change my review later but so far I am disappointed w/ the way they run this card! Initial card mailed to wrong address. Was getting notifications to make payment on card that I had not yet received or activated. Several attempts to pay via app/ph system would not draft from checking/debt acct already registered/verified on their app. (This acct is used for all my other cards without problems). Cust svc agent says my previous payments via app were canceled (definitely not by me!) and they can not use the account that I already set up through their app. (Again, I pay all my other CC’s with this ckg/debt card acct.) Cust svc agent successfully takes my payment over the phone without problem…from the very account that she just finished telling me cannot be used. The account that mysteriously “canceled” my previous payment attempts. (See #3 above)

    The app itself is nice and minimalistic albeit very laggy and slow. The customer service phone agent was pleasant and calm despite me getting more upset at the apparent lack of depth in her training or willingness to investigate or refer me to someone who could investigate these glitches I was experiencing. I really do hope to have better interactions in the future and will report all of it, good or bad for sure! Good luck to you all! Ps….record your phone conversation if you can. The agent spoke to denied me a transcript of our conversation.

    It takes a lot for me to write a review, in fact this is the first review I have been able to bring myself to write. Based on my experience, as a responsible, hard working father of two beautiful children and 0 late payments/accounts....until now, I would never ever let anyone in my life sign a contract with Brightway/OneMain. Life is not easy, we all know that. Most of us work very hard to do the best and be the best we can be, every day. Brightway/OneMain is not about their customers, they do not care about you.

    I have 1 late payment that was quickly paid and it was solely due to a move and account change, which was immediately paid back (within 30 days, and no late notification). I have been a customer at one main for 2 years with 0 late payments. There is no grace period, regardless of what they tell you, and no matter what happens in life, they will report you and kill your credit with no option or even a thought of removing a 1 TIME LATE payment report to the bureaus. The representative I spoke with, Amanda, was the absolute worst. Extremely rude and the disheartening conversation that I had with her made me lose even more faith in human kind. I will never ever use this company again.

    Brightway is like any other Mastercard credit cards. However, there is a negative point to it. Unlike other similar ones, they do not allow you to change the DUE DATE. I am surmising that they are buying this support from Mastercard with the least features for lower costs.
