Ranking among the top five states for net positive migration, South Carolina attracted 203,674 movers in 2023. That marks a 7.3% decrease from the previous year, representing a net loss of 16,033 residents. However, even with decreasing migration in 2023, South Carolina has many desirable qualities such as the state’s warm climate, lower-than-average cost of living and diverse employment opportunities. For example, South Carolina’s median home sale price of $389,500 is 7.4% more affordable than the national median.

Unlike other states, where movers may target one or two specific locations, those who move to South Carolina are flocking to a range of cities and towns. Inland suburbs like Fort Mill, for example, experienced growth as high as 37.2% between 2020 and 2023. Likewise, more expensive coastal cities like North Charleston are also seeing healthy growth. With strong job growth alongside the state's natural beauty, it's easy to see why South Carolina remains a popular choice for short- and long-distance movers.

Tips for moving to South Carolina

Not sure how to start your move to South Carolina? Consider these step-by-step moving tips:

1. Understand the cost of living

While South Carolina’s cost-of-living index, housing and property taxes are more affordable than the national average, many factors can influence the affordability of where you choose to live. For instance, coastal locations like Charleston have higher housing costs than inland cities like Columbia. Additionally, the state’s lower-than-average median household income can offset other benefits depending on your career. Research the specific cities and neighborhoods you intend to move to, so you can create a comprehensive budget before relocating. We recommend visiting SC.gov for more information.

2. Learn about the job market

South Carolina boasts a diverse job market, with strong growth in a variety of industries from mining and logging to automotive and aerospace. Before moving, explore job opportunities in your field through job board websites, and don’t forget to utilize resources from the South Carolina DEW website. Such research will provide insight into job openings and your new area’s local economy.

3. Prepare for the subtropical climate

While Charleston’s average temperature of 65 degrees from December to March is much cooler than Miami’s 78 degrees, anyone moving from up north should prepare for heat and storms. The hot, humid summers in South Carolina can regularly reach the mid-90s, especially inland. Heavy rainfall can also be common, especially during hurricane season. With that in mind, it’s important to ensure that your new home is built to keep you safe and comfortable all year long. You can stay up to date on local South Carolina weather here.

4. Understand transportation options

While there may be public transportation options available in major cities like Charleston and Columbia, most of South Carolina is car-dependent. So, if you choose to move to a rural area, owning a personal vehicle is essential for daily travel. Research transportation options and hazards using the SDOT website.

5. Be aware of natural hazards

In the wake of devastating storms like Hurricane Helene, it’s important to note the possibility of natural hazards for new South Carolina residents. The state is prone to hurricanes, floods and occasional tornadoes. If you’re moving to the coast, be aware of and prepare for storms during hurricane season (June through November). If you’re moving inland, stay informed on the latest storms and floods. You can review preparedness tips from the SCEMD.

6. Embrace the history and culture

Known for its Southern hospitality, historic colonial homes and tasty barbecue, there is much to explore in South Carolina. Visit one of the state’s stunning historical sights, or enjoy some classic roadside shrimp and grits. More of a nature lover? Check out one of the state’s gorgeous beaches or scenic mountain trails. Regardless of your interests, you’re likely to find something to love in the Palmetto State.

7. Understand mover quotes and tipping

When moving to South Carolina, carefully review and compare moving company quotes. Be sure to account for potential additional fees depending on where you’re relocating to. Tipping movers is customary; a tip of 10% to 20% of the total cost is standard based on the quality of service.
