Tesla's grip on the electric vehicle (EV) market remains strong despite a slight dip in deliveries during the first quarter of 2024. The company's dominance extends beyond sales figures, as Tesla has boasted the highest market value within the automotive sector since June 2023.

While overall reviews may be mixed, this article delves deeper into Tesla's success story, exploring its ever-increasing sales figures, regional hot spots within the U.S. market, and the most popular models drawing customers.

Tesla statistics

Despite a 20.2% drop in deliveries compared to a record-breaking Q4 of 2023, Tesla's first quarter of 2024 still saw many vehicles hit the road, with over 386,000 units delivered. Tesla's bread and butter is its automotive segment, generating over $78.5 billion of its nearly $97 billion in 2023 revenue. This success is driven in part by the Model Y, which has become their top seller and has dominated EV sales in 2023.

Tesla units delivered by year

Since Q1 of 2016, Tesla’s worldwide vehicle sales have steadily increased.

In 2016, the company sold nearly 76,000 units worldwide, but by the end of 2023, more than 1.8 million Teslas had been delivered to eager customers. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, Tesla delivered over 386,000 vehicles — a 20.2% dip compared to the last quarter of 2023, when a record-breaking 484,000 vehicles were delivered. However, Tesla is poised for another strong year, considering the company’s steady rise in deliveries since 2016 and being the most valuable brand within the automotive sector since June 2023.

Tesla revenue statistics

Just like their deliveries, Tesla’s revenue has also risen significantly year after year.

When Tesla started selling cars in 2008, the company earned $15 million that year. Fast-forward to 2023 and Tesla’s yearly revenue has grown to nearly $97 billion. Unsurprisingly, the bulk of Tesla’s revenue (over $78.5 billion) comes from its automotive segment. The Model Y has become their top seller and reigned supreme in global plug-in vehicle sales for 2023, and just a few years ago, the Model 3 became the first electric car to eclipse 1 million global sales.

Tesla sales by state

Tesla’s biggest sales hot spot in the U.S. is California, and it isn’t a particularly close race.

Based on per-state electric vehicle data and Tesla’s market share from 2021 to 2022, an estimated 366,000 Teslas were sold in California in that time frame.3 Rounding out the top four states for Tesla sales were Florida (62,200), Texas (52,600) and Washington (43,400). Meanwhile, South Dakota (442), Wyoming (332) and North Dakota (247) ranked lowest in estimated sales during the same period.

But, according to 2022 data, California isn’t just home to the most Teslas — it’s got the most electric cars by a mile, with over 900,000 compared to second-place Florida (168,000) and third-place Texas (149,000). South Dakota (1,200), Wyoming (800) and North Dakota (600) once again rounded out the bottom three.

How long can a Tesla battery last?

Electric vehicle batteries are generally built to last, with a life span of 10 to 20 years. Though, just like any technology, extreme conditions can damage them. For example, hot climates can accelerate battery degradation, and frequent use of Level 3 station chargers can cause overheating and ultimately reduce performance.

Wondering how well Tesla batteries hold up over time? Data based on real-world owner experiences suggest a slow and steady decline. On average, Tesla models lose around 1% of their range annually. So, even after a decade of ownership, you can still expect to reach around 90% of the original battery capacity.

Like all electric vehicles sold in the U.S., Teslas come with a substantial battery warranty. However, the coverage varies depending on the model you choose. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Entry-level: For the Model 3 rear-wheel drive and Model Y rear-wheel drive, you’re covered for eight years or 100,000 miles.
  • Midlevel: For the Model 3 Long Range, Model 3 Performance, Model Y all-wheel drive, Model Y Long Range, Model Y Long Range rear-wheel drive and Model Y Performance, the warranty is eight years or 120,000 miles.
  • Premium: The Model S, Model X and Cybetruck boast the most extensive coverage plan, at eight years or 150,000 miles.

Overall, Tesla vehicles are designed for minimal maintenance. Under normal driving conditions, Tesla recommends servicing your car on an ‘as-needed’ basis, freeing you from frequent trips to the mechanic.

Battery aside, the table below shows some common Tesla maintenance recommendations. However, remember that these can vary depending on your specific model and year:

  • Rotate tires: Every 6,250 miles
  • Clean and lubricate brake calipers: Every one year or 12,500 miles (in cold regions)
  • Replace cabin air filter: Every two to three years
  • Replace HEPA filter: Every three years
  • Check brake fluid: Every two years
  • Replace air conditioner desiccant bag: Every two to six years

What is the bestselling Tesla model?

Tesla continues to dominate the electric vehicle market, and the Model Y takes the top spot.

In 2023, over 1.2 million Model Ys were sold worldwide. Tesla also sold nearly 530,000 units of the Model 3, which was good for third place in global 2023 EV sales. While two Tesla models secured spots among the top three best-selling plug-in electric vehicles, Asian automaker BYD gave the American electric car giant a run for its money. The second-place BYD Song Plus sold more than 636,000 units in 2023, and the company’s electric fleet had six out of the top 10 best-selling plug-in EVs that year.

In 2023, BYD sold around 3 million electric cars globally, including hybrids. Of them, 1.6 million were battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Tesla only sells BEVs and delivered 1.8 million vehicles worldwide in 2023, accounting for roughly 19% of the global BEV market share.
