I moved to GA last year. I called Spot Insurance and was informed that I would have to keep my current coverage in NY for a monthly premium of $118 until policy renewal that was 12 months later. Note that the premium in GA is $52 cheaper. If I canceled and had a new policy issued for GA coverage then any preexisting conditions would not be covered. Note that there is a policy endorsement that pretty much states this. I did speak with an underwriting manager about this and she suggested that I increase my deductible $50 that should not affect coverage, and then make the policy address change to GA. So, that is what I did only to find out recently that my dog does not have coverage for her preexisting allergies, etc. Really Spot?
So, if I kept the NY policy in place Spot would have gotten an additional $792 of NY premium while I lived in GA that I found disturbing. I thought we found a way around this as suggested by the manager, but this was obviously not the case. No question that this is a cash grab for Spot. That is the only explanation. Bad underwriting.

Total scam. Denies claims, asks for more info, routes you to several different people, puts you on hold repeatedly. Then tells you they are reviewing, wait 3 days, denies again, same process over and over again. If you ask for a supervisor, they are 'unavailable'. They will give you an email address to send documents, then say they didn't get them or they are "checking into it". You will get nowhere with them. I spent 20 hours dealing with them before I gave up and filed a dispute with cc.

I paid Spot Pet Insurance premiums expecting support when my dog actually needed care. Instead, nearly every claim was met with broad “pre-existing condition” denials, vague explanations, and zero transparency. They group unrelated issues together instead of reviewing claims individually and never clearly explain how they reached their conclusions. When I asked for detailed breakdowns and policy language supporting the denials, I got canned responses and deflection instead of answers. Even line items that should have been separately evaluated were brushed aside. The process felt designed to exhaust policyholders until they give up.
Pet insurance is supposed to provide peace of mind during stressful moments. Spot did the opposite. When my dog needed help most, I spent more time fighting denials than receiving support. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend reading every limitation in their policy carefully and researching other providers before trusting this company with your pet’s care.

I was denied a claim (toward my deductible) because they said I didn't provide enough information, but it was exactly the same as others that they have honored. Very frustrating also to talk to the underwriters about this when it is very hard to understand what they are saying due to a heavy accent.

Spot is the absolute WORST for pet insurance. Stay away from this company, it's a scam. I started a policy and then my dog was prescribed medications which should have been covered. Spot kept denying my claims because they said they didn't receive full vet records. I sent them the complete records from my vet multiple times, but they said they lacked "soap notes". My dog only went to the vet for routine vaccinations so the only notes were what vaccines he got and his weight. My vet then added in the "soap notes" they wanted only for them to say that still wasn't correct, but wouldn't explain why.
My previous vet and my new vet have no idea what Spot is looking for so it seems this was just a way that they could get out of reimbursing me for my dog's medications. After further review, it seems this is a common practice for Spot Pet Insurance. So I have been paying monthly for a service I have never received. Unfortunately I will end up having to take them to small claims court to get my money back. Save yourself the headache and DO NOT GET PET INSURANCE THROUGH SPOT.

If I could rate 0 stars I would...I am deeply frustrated and hurt by the customer service. My account was automatically debited monthly. First they took 2 payments for enrollment. With a wellness exam I was only reimbursed $20. This policy was for 2 dogs...recently had to get a Cytopoint injection for one that had never been diagnosed with allergies. This shot was a result of a landscaper spraying chemicals...the point is this 3 year old dog is now labeled as having environmental allergies...I called to speak to the lady that sold me the policy and was told in 3 separate phone calls I could not speak with her...I resubmitted the claim along with my vet resubmitted also. Denied again...
I tried calling to change my policy to take wellness off...they had just taken my monthly payment the day before, but they wanted an additional $65 for my other dog due to the fact she had not had any problems...with careful consideration and being spoke to like my vet was incompetent I canceled both policies. Just be aware I have paid $1355.16 to them in a year for 2 useless policies. I am sure if I the lady that sold me the policy it would have been totally different. The $1355.16 doesn't include the double payment at beginning of policy. My monthly payment was put back today into my checking account and guess what??? It's $6 short. Never again will I recommend SPOT pet insurance.

Spot refused covered because we couldn't give more vet records of her past, we didn't have any more, she was healthy and didn't go to the vet. After adopting a dog last July that was around a year old, we set ourselves up with Spot. Jumped through all the hoops to get all the records we could and sent them in. When we adopted our little guy had no idea that he was dealing with worms of various sorts even after being dewormed by the rescue. I explained to the vet that we thought he had a sensitive stomach, had tried different diets but that he was still gassy and suffering from what seemed like chronic diarrhea. Turns out he was diagnosed with tapeworm, round worm, wing worm and eventually giardia over the next few months. Through out this time we dealt with a lot of diarrhea - a very common symptom of all of these worms.
After finally meeting out deductible and being very happy that we started receiving some money back ~ I received an email stating that Spot conducted an audit and determined that my dog's diarrhea is a preexisting condition. Not only will they not cover any claims for diarrhea for at least six months, but they took almost all of the 500 dollar deductible away and are making us start over. They used my non-medical degree description of my dog's symptoms in the vet notes to make this determination. Very unfair that they would take a symptom of a condition and make it into a preexisting condition!

They backtrack for at least a month, and after waiting that long, they ask for additional documents from your vet. It’s simply ridiculous. The customer service is a joke — poor people working at this company, powerless and helpless. STAY AWAY. In Canada, your best options are TrueCompanion, Pet Plus, or simply using your own money. I spent weeks comparing plans and deeply regret choosing Spot On. Don’t do it.

I’m devastated by how Spot handled my dog Lilly’s claim. They denied it saying she had already been “diagnosed with an incurable kidney disease,” which is completely untrue. In June, Lilly only had slightly elevated enzyme levels — no diagnosis, no treatment, and no indication of kidney disease from her veterinarian. I switched to Spot because my previous insurer discontinued her policy and I wanted to keep protecting her in her final years. Instead of compassion, I received a denial based on false assumptions. Lilly is now gone, and the pain of losing her is already unbearable. What hurts even more is knowing this company made it worse — turning my grief into a battle to defend the truth. No pet parent should be made to feel dismissed or blamed when all they did was love and care for their animal. I hope Spot learns to treat families with honesty and empathy — because behind every policy there’s a life, a family, and a love that deserves respect. 💔

Spot placed so many barriers to my first claim, I canceled in frustration: 1) calls went to an off-shore answering service that was useless; 2) the claim was commingled with an invoice among my pet’s medical history and that had to be removed by an agent of the company; and 3) the company continued to ask for medical records that were far more clinical than required. Not recommended unless you are willing to put up with confusion and processing delays.

I have since tried four different claims all of which were not only denied, but didn’t even go towards the deductible. Healthy Paws paid all of these without question. Pre-existing condition for allergy!! Which dog does not have one.
I can understand a more severe underlying condition that may lead to cancer or other critical diseases that maybe justified but allergy??? Jeez. This pet insurance company has deliberately misleading language in their online sign up process relating to waiting periods. They state that you may not file claims for any condition treated during the waiting period. This would mean claims would be denied if they took place during this period. I found out today that in reality any condition DISCOVERED during the waiting period will not only not be covered for the visit, but will also be logged a pre-existing condition for future denials, even though it occurred after the start of the plan. Now with a 180 day term for a consideration of not being pre-existing, our dog has a monthly preventative prescription that will NEVER be covered because Spot relates to that keyword in her diagnosis. Furthermore I am now permanently stuck paying out of pocket with no insurance coverage since at this point these are now all 'pre-existing'. Absolutely heartless scam artists.

I got Spot when I adopted an 11 yr old dog that had a history of severe neglect. The neglect my dog, Tito, endured affected every body system and took him almost a year to recover from. Knowing that Tito might have medical issues in the future, due to his history, I went with Spot after I read this on their website (for CA resident), “Pre-existing conditions are not covered by our plans. However, If your pet’s pre-existing condition is curable and has been cured and free from treatment and symptoms for a period of 180 days it is a new occurrence.”
I thought this was very important because the insurance I have for my other dog, Toby, is still holding certain things as “pre existing conditions,” even though they are not ongoing conditions/illnesses at all. At the time of adoption and still, Tito has been healthy with only 2 visits to the vet so far. I’m grateful, but I know I’m prepared for the future if his health takes a turn for the worst. Customer service on the phone and through the app for claims/estimate processing has been awesome. The insurance Toby has seems to fight every claim, is slow to respond, and doesn’t collect medical records from the vet (even though their website says they will). Spot insurance is better in all of those ways. After 1 year with Spot, I’ve decided to switch Toby over to it as well. I recommend Spot to my family and friends.

If I could give Spot Pet Insurance Zero stars - I would. Beware: They don’t pay for your claims. And they don’t accept most of the vet paperwork submitted. Even when it’s the “soap notes” they require. I’ve only taken my dogs to the best vets around and none of them have this paperwork readily available. The whole claim submission process is very time consuming and doesn’t work.
I had two dogs at the start of my policies. One died a few months into his policy and they paid for zero of his vet appointments (over $700 in appointment charges). None of the vet visits were for a pre-existing condition. My second dog is elderly and is needing teeth extraction. Also not a “pre-existing condition”. I’ve had thousands of dollars in vet bills over the last couple months and Spot Pet Insurance has paid out around $125. This is pathetic and not at all worth the $66 monthly fee per dog (which I’ve canceled both policies now, obviously). They make it sound easy with the app - but the company is amazingly disorganized and literally nothing works.
