I wanted to do an in-kind transfer of IRA Securities that I held at Charles Schwab. I specifically asked in a chat call if the securities would be transferred and not sold. They confirmed that would be the case multiple times. They ended up instructing Charles Schwab to sell the securities and Schwab then mailed a check for the sold securities. The value of my stock has gone up since they were sold. The value of the stock would now be worth $2,800 more. When I asked about what happened I was told that their employee gave me wrong information. The employee is Jhoileg.

Another employee also confirmed it would be a security transfer and not cash. After talking to another support person they told me that I cannot hold specific stocks in my account. This is another piece of information that was not conveyed to me when I requested how I could make the transfer. I am still waiting to see if they can make me whole. I am just asking for the same number of shares as I had when I made the transfer request.

I recently received an email notifying me of the data breach that occurred at Betterment.com. I then received a notice from my security service that my information had been leaked onto the dark web. Now, I haven’t used these accounts in years. They all have a zero balance, but I wanted to secure the account or delete my account. There is NO WAY to remove a connected bank account. There is NO WAY to remove all accounts once they are set up. There is also NO WAY to find ANY related information on their website support area and NO WAY to email them for assistance.

I tried their chat service and that went exactly how you think it would go. No help. I was trying to avoid calling and sitting on hold with some out-of-country customer service reading from a script. I’d really like to know if all the 5-star reviewers know your accounts can never be disconnected, deleted, or made secure?

This must be a terrorist site. I received alerts from the Credit Bureaus that they attempted to enter my reports on January 30 illegally and immorally. I had no idea who they are. I had to find a phone number to contact them. They refused to get me a Fraud or Security or Federal Compliance person. I was called a "**." They lied and said someone would call and no one has for over a week. I am concerned that they have stolen my identity.

Absolute worst customer service/and their verification service is diabolical. It’s incredible how hard this company makes it for you to give them your money. I tried uploading a “utility bill” this is the ONLY thing they will accept to “verify my address”. Like okay. It’s 2025. Calm down. I finally called them on the phone and the most aggressive woman put me on hold for a half hour before emailing me the exact same link to upload a utility bill with my address. Yeah. I don’t get any utility bills. All that stuff is online. I answered all her security questions, I would’ve even given her my SSN. But they’re so bottle necked into the utility bill thing I was like, yeah I’ll take my money elsewhere. Fidelity is LIGHTYEARS more efficient. And no other bank I’ve used has demanded a physical bill.

They “locked my account for security reasons” when I tried to withdraw my money. It’s been 2 months of me fighting with them to unlock the account. They keep saying “Yep we’re just waiting for operations to take care of it.” I’m starting legal proceedings against them as I literally seem to have no other alternative to get my money. SCAM COMPANY. AVOID.

My experience fits the theme of many others. I attempted an external transfer of my money, and it's taken much longer than it was supposed to. When I reached out to customer support they said a hold was placed on the transfer because I was attempting to withdraw "too soon" after making a deposit. What the hell is that supposed to mean? So my money is in limbo - my other bank says the pending transfer is not showing up for them, and Betterment states they can't remove the hold or cancel the transfer. It's absolutely ridiculous.

An IRA of mine got moved to Betterment, and I have been trying to get it moved to a different company I do most of my investing with. Betterment has been making this an incredibly difficult process. They claim that "the other company has to start the process" but this other company - a very well known investment management company - has given me and Betterment every piece of information they need to start the process. Now Betterment is not responding to support tickets. They claim they have escalated my case but no-one has reached out since then. This company does not care about you, they only care about holding your funds as long as possible and making it near to impossible to withdraw. They should be investigated for fraud, and leadership should be fired if not prosecuted.

Placed hold on my account when trying to withdraw and made up a whole bunch of ridiculous reasons for why. Absolute garbage company, do not put your money in here. Contacting them is a hassle, and they delay getting back to you in a timely fashion.

Had a terrible experience with Betterment. Tried to withdraw money from betterment to my approved external bank account and they placed a hold on my funds. It took several weeks and many emails and phone calls to finally receive my funds. Meanwhile the entire time they were. holding my funds they paid no interest. Stay away from Betterment, they are not worth the trouble.

We have been with Betterment for a few years. We are in the middle of one of the worst experiences ever with them. I have a joint account with my spouse and he just passed. I did that right thing and told them of the passing and wanted to just make it an individual account. They have frozen my account of nearly $500,000. It's been 2 weeks and they are telling me it could take up to 6 weeks to access my money. It's unethical and possibly unlawful to do this. I don't know where to go for help at this point.
