What is SunPower?

The SunPower brand has existed since 1985. For most of its history, SunPower manufactured its own high-efficiency solar panels. In 2020, it spun off its manufacturing division into a separate company, Maxeon Solar Technologies.

The current SunPower, Inc. functions as a vertically integrated residential solar and storage company, offering:

  • System design and proposal software
  • Procurement of panels, inverters, batteries and other equipment
  • A dealer and installer network, plus in-house installers (e.g., Blue Raven)
  • Financing options and warranty support

SunPower solar equipment

SunPower provides complete solar panel systems with optional battery storage. Batteries are most useful in areas with variable utility rates or where net metering credits are low.

Solar panels

SunPower no longer uses Maxeon-manufactured panels. According to a SunPower representative, the company is now “brand agnostic” and installs panels with comparable efficiency and quality from other suppliers.

Solar batteries

The Enphase IQ Battery 10C stores excess solar energy for use at night, during peak-rate hours or in outages. Homeowners can start with one 10 kWh unit and scale up to 80 kWh.

Enphase batteries include a 15-year limited warranty (or up to 6,000 cycles). By the end of the warranty, the battery is guaranteed to retain at least 60% of its original capacity.

SunPower costs

How much solar panels cost depends on a number of factors, like where you live, how much energy your household uses and what incentives you’re eligible for.

A typical residential solar panel installation costs $18,000 to $43,000 on average, not including the cost of a storage battery. Adding a solar battery typically adds $7,000 to $18,000 to your total system cost.

On the high end, Faysal in California said their SunPower installation cost $70,000, and Douglas in Hawaii paid $100,000 for a SunPower system.

SunPower financing

SunPower offers solar loans, solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs).

SunPower’s Lightreach Solar Lease is a $0-down option that provides predictable monthly payments, no maintenance responsibility and immediate bill savings. With a lease, your payment is fixed, regardless of output. However, the fixed payment must be made even during months with lower production.

With a PPA, you pay for the solar energy your system produces at a set per-kWh rate. Bills fluctuate based on production.

SunPower FAQ

Where can I find more information about the bankruptcy or services previously provided by SunPower?

Stakeholders with questions may call Epiq (SunPower Corporation’s bankruptcy administrator) or email SunPowerinfo@epiqglobal.com.

Does SunPower offer energy monitoring?

Yes, the equipment is compatible with a monitoring app (Enphase App), so you can track performance remotely.

What happens to my SunPower solar panels if I sell my home?

With a leased system, you may be able to transfer the system to the new owner for a fee. If your lease has expired, SunPower can remove the solar system from your roof before you sell. If you own your panels, you can factor the solar energy system into the home’s asking price.

What is the lifespan of SunPower solar panels?

SunPower solar panels should last 25 years or longer.

Did SunPower go out of business?

SunPower is still in business. The original SunPower Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024, but the brand continues under new ownership. Complete Solar Holdings acquired the SunPower name and relaunched the company with new leadership.

SunPower video review

sunpower solar company video review
Rick: Hi, my name is Rick, and I live in Ponte Vedra, Florida. And what got me into solar power was two things. One was financial. Wanting to not have to pay an electric company for my electric bill. And the other was being a responsible caretaker of the Earth, I suppose. To be green. So we didn't really choose a lot of alternatives. I did my studying on the internet very thoroughly, and quickly came across SunPower. And through peer-reviewed information and studying, I found that they were the best product on the market. That's why we went with them, and, quite frankly we're very happy with the product because it is a wrap-around product. They have everything from the connectors to the electrical. If there's ever an issue with it, I can just go to SunPower. I don't have to rely on a third party contractor for anything as far as a systems concern. So we're very happy with our purchase. So the purchase process for these solar panels is very simple and very easy. The representative came to our house and explained the options we had available to us. We chose to go with a loan to finance the panels over 25 years, and it was very simple, very straightforward and direct. We'll be using the tax credit to pay off a portion of the loan this year, and after that, it's a 25 year loan. And I pay extra on it, and we're very happy with it. No problems, no issues. It was clean and easy. So the people that we used to install the solar panels were very courteous, very attentive, very knowledgeable. They came to the house and explained things to us. They even came when I asked them to come and it wasn't scheduled for them to visit, and they would explain and answer questions for me, point things out, and I felt like I was in very good hands, very knowledgeable, and they were very honest and transparent up front. If there was gonna be an issue, they would call me up ahead of time and let me know that there were a delay, or if something were to happen. So I felt very comfortable in this process, like I was in good hands. Purchasing solar panels for our home and our family was completely worth it for two reasons. One, financially. We don't really have an electric bill anymore. The panels have done so well that I'm net zero, and actually negative. The electric company owes me money at this point. My last bill was negative $17, and that's a great place to be. Also I'm a great steward of our planet, making sure I'm keeping my carbon footprint and my family's carbon footprint as small as possible. So we're very happy and very impressed with the product and our decision.

Reached out on October 28th to try and get work performed at my house. Was told that I had to pay an invoice first before work could be scheduled (Already feels like a scam). Paid an Invoice on November 20th. As of Jan 22nd still could not be told a date that the work could be completed. Have called at least 20 times and was put on hold to later be told they would call me back. They never call back.

Had a $25k, 12 panel system installed on my roof in 2023. A year a half later they are BK’d and their Customer Service is out of business!! Thoroughly disgusted with Sun Power. A complete waste of time and money. I fully regret choosing Sun Power over many good competitors still in business!

Company acquired Blue Raven company and did not fulfill our contract to install solar by end of 2025, despite entering into that contract and getting state approvals for reimbursement for solar program between July and Oct 2025. Lack of contact or communication with customers, and now it's too late to qualify for the state and federal solar incentive programs, since they are now ending. Horrible customer service.

Sunpower's bankruptcy left us responsible for our own maintenance. Our original maintenance contract is null and void. However, they did start a new company and are selling systems to new builds. Buyer beware. I will never advise anyone to do business with SunPower after finding out this company got away with not honoring their contracts.

Never been a customer of Sunpower, but recently I was involved in a hit and run by one their company vehicles. I don’t know why they would hire someone with terrible ethical values. Really is such a disgrace, they should have pulled over. I honked at them but they ran off.

My solar panel system was installed in December 2017, but it was never connected to PSEG, my electric company. SunPower claims it is not its problem, as Sun Strong Management is now responsible. However, Sun Strong Management argues it is SunPower’s responsibility since they installed the system. Regardless of who is currently responsible, I am the only one suffering: there has been a breach of contract since the panels were installed, which continued when Sun Strong Management took over my contract. SunPower and now Sun Strong Management are ruining my credit score.

DO NOT DO business with SunPower. They installed a Solar System on my property on October 2024 and now I have a roof leak under the solar panels, my contract says and I quote "12-year warranty protection for roof damage incurred at installation" is all false, they went out of business and the company that took them over will not honor anything Prior to 2025. These companies change names like I change my shirt and the consumer is left with nothing to protect him. SunStrong took over my lease but they don't even answer my telephone calls, but they sure take my money every month, they are located in Texas. Do your research before you hire anyone other than the company that COSTCO stands behind, most of them will go out of business and open with a different name or are taken over by another company that will not honor your warranty and leave you hanging, like me.

SunPower used to be the best solar company out there until it was run into the ground by idiot executives with golden parachutes. SunPower raided its warranty "reserves" account as it was failing, and before it filed bankruptcy in August, 2025. Now the "new" SunPower, purchased by Complete Solar (Complete Solaria), has taken on the SunPower name again. Only this time, the newly branded SunPower wants to reap any former goodwill from the SunPower brand name, while refusing to honor any of its liabilities, warranty obligations, or the like. Stay far away from SunPower.
