EmPower Solar panels and equipment

As a solar installer, EmPower Solar does not manufacture its own equipment. Instead, the company offers equipment from leading solar brands like SunPower and Tesla. Its equipment spans a range of residential needs, including:

  • Solar panels: Its systems typically cover 600 to 800 square feet and weigh as little as a layer of shingles. All systems include additional products like inverters, racking and a monitoring system.
  • In-home electric car charging stations: If you have an electric vehicle, you can get an in-home charging station from EmPower. The company sells AC Level 1, 2 and 3 chargers, plus V3 superchargers. An electric car charging station starts at around $499, with installation costs between $300 and $1,000.
  • Solar battery backup: To truly live off the grid, you’ll need a solar backup battery. EmPower sells the Tesla Powerwall, which stores the electricity generated by your solar panel for the times you really need it. The cost of one Tesla Powerwall is $17,600 before incentives (in some cases, you may need more than one).
  • Whole-home solar equipment: If you need all of the above, EmPower offers what it calls “Total Home Electrification,” which covers every facet of residential solar energy. Its team designs a custom solution, determining the size and shape of your solar system and upgrading your heat pumps and electric appliances as needed.

EmPower Solar installation

Installing a solar solution isn’t an easy task. EmPower’s can handle all aspects of installation, including:

  1. Electricity usage review: Submit a photo of your most recent electricity bill so solar experts can review factors like usage and needs.
  2. Home assessment: EmPower’s in-house technicians conduct an in-person assessment of your property, either by drone or foot. This assessment takes accurate measurements, evaluates roof structure and plans installation locations.
  3. Permit acquisition: EmPower’s dedicated permitting department works directly with local building departments to obtain, complete and submit the necessary construction permits for the project.
  4. Scheduling your project: Once permits are approved, a dedicated project management team schedules installation.
  5. Equipment installation: Each project has a dedicated site foreman who leads the team of solar installers during the installation:
    • Installing a racking system to the roof or ground
    • Connecting solar panels to an external meter
    • Connecting solar panels to interior electrical panel
    • Mounting any backup batteries and electric vehicle chargers
    • Giving homeowners a formal introduction to the new system
  6. Inspection: After installation, EmPower schedules the required final inspections with local jurisdictions and utility providers.
  7. Mobile app download: Once the system is up and running, a tech makes sure you’re connected to the mobile app for monitoring.

EmPower Solar services

In addition to installation, EmPower’s in-house service team offers a few other services, including custom solar system design, thorough roof assessments and system lifetime service. The website is pretty limited on what these services cover (and at what cost), however. Contact the company for more information.

EmPower Solar costs

Pricing is specific to each home or business, taking into account factors like size, roof shape, shade, electricity needs and budget. On average, a whole-home solar system costs $16,715 after the federal tax credit in 2023. Before incentives, the cost usually ranges between $20,000 and 40,000 in New York City. You could pay more or less depending on your situation.

EmPower says customers who purchase their system outright can expect to see a return on investment within four to seven years.

Financing

Customers can choose one of three ways to pay for their system: purchase outright, lease or finance. All three options can make you eligible for most state and federal tax incentives.

  • Financing: You can sign a low-interest loan with term options between five and 15 years with as little as $0 down.
  • Leasing: For $0 down, you can lease your system from EmPower. Leases are for 25 years and offer predictable monthly payments. Customers who lease their system rather than purchase or finance are not eligible for the 30% federal investment tax credit, however.

EmPower Solar warranty

All work is done by an in-house service team and is backed by a ten-year workmanship warranty. The panels and equipment themselves include their own manufacturer warranties, typically between 20 and 25 years. The team also takes extra steps to protect equipment (like putting in squirrel guards) to make sure the system works to its highest potential.

The company doesn’t provide much information about things that may void the warranty, but it’s safe to assume that you have to keep up with regular maintenance (and keep those maintenance records) to maintain your warranty coverage. Read through your contract carefully to understand the rules surrounding your warranty.

Don’t do it!!!! Ryan ** is a great salesman. Sells you promises not kept. I use less electricity but now pay OVER double!!! My system hooked up wrong (inverters). My system stuck on night mode! (Still waiting for tech-been a month). Told him I would buy system in 1-2 yrs. He never told me I was stuck leasing for 5 yrs! Told me panels melt snow. Technicians told me I have to shovel the snow off my roof. I’m a 68 yr old widow!!!! 4 months to install. 6 months later and my system has only worked 2 weeks. They sell you system, but after that… they ignore you!!! Empower blames Palmetto for reimbursement. Palmetto says Empower hadn’t sent paperwork. Ryan ** should be fired. His only concern was me giving him good reviews (and it was before system actually kicked in). I should have waited. Don’t let him scare you into the “rising electrical costs” I now pay over double!!!!!

I was originally told that Empower would warranty the cost of labor to replace any panels that were not working and that the manufacturer would warranty the cost of the parts. When one of panels stopped working, over 9 months ago, we put in a claim for its replacement. Empower basically just threw their hands up and was of no help with moving along this claim.

After all that time and me following up with them regularly and them telling me it should be replaced soon, they are now telling me that if I want them to replace it that they want $1,800 for labor costs. Their reasoning for this is that the manufacturer is not going to reimburse them for the labor costs. So their so called “warranty” was basically them just saying that they will ask the manufacturer to pay them if a replacement is need and if the manufacturer doesn’t pay then they aren’t doing everything without money. Additionally, during that time, one more panel stopped working. They are now saying that they will offer a “complimentary labor service” when we get to six panels down, so for now I just have to deal with the two not working.

When I signed up with this company, it was at a premium to other solar companies. I did so because their marking made it seem like they were of higher quality and that their service going forward would be of a higher standard. In the four years that I have had the panels, 2 are already down and they seem to expect that we will be getting to more down. Their customers service (after installation) has been nonexistent and flat out rude. I would definitely proceed with great caution if considering this company. Though taking legal action for my two down panels may not be financially feasible, I know I am not the only one burned by their warranty loop hole. Please contact me directly if you have also been unable to get empower to honor their warrant, as a class action lawsuit is a definite possibility.

We were researching solar companies and neighbors within our city of White Plains used EmPower Solar and they had positive things to say about them. So we chose to go with them after comparing them to other solar companies.

It was fairly easy to sign up. The gentleman came to our home, laid everything out. Because we had also researched other companies and heard other presentations, we knew what to look for. It didn't feel as though we were being pressured at all to sign or do anything. It was a comprehensive presentation and we felt comfortable signing with them.

We signed, COVID happened. It was just an odd time. It took many months before they were able to install. But once they did, it was fine. It was pretty seamless, straightforward, and kept it moving.

We appreciate it going solar, especially in New York where Con Edison is talking about raising rates. We appreciate the energy, the power that it produces. We see the impact on our electric bill. So, it's been a positive experience for us.

I had them back in 2017. There was a little bit of a hiccup during installation but they took care of any problems they created, and it went smoothly, overall. They were very professional. My bill from 2017 was fixed at $210. With the financing from the government and all the rebates, it went down to $136, plus $13 a month for the line fees. I was very happy, and can't complain about anything.

I'm 100% off the grid. The sign-up was clear and decent. EmPower wasn’t cutting corners, they were just very good and truthful in everything they did. I did have some delays for a few months. There was a shortage of the panels but it was understandable because of the pandemic. I have no one to blame for that.

The installation was good and professionally done. They showed up in the morning and they were done by 4:00 PM, and I enjoyed watching them work. I also had the Powerwall installed, and it’s a big system, so I knew it was gonna be more expensive. But it was still cheaper than other solar companies, so I'm very satisfied with the price.

I had an issue when SunPower went out of business and was no longer providing warranty for the panels. But EmPower took charge of it, so if I have any issues, they will take care of it, and I’m happy with that.

I got EmPower Solar because they had the best reviews of customer service and warranty. So far, it’s been good. I thank God I haven't had to worry about the warranty. It's only been a year, but their customer service has been excellent as well as the quality of products. They've been stellar so far. Aside from my loan I’ve paid nothing for electricity since I got solar, other than the use of the grid.

When I was planning to do the solar panels, I searched a couple of companies. I saw EmPower was in the area and had good reviews so I chose them. Most of the other companies don’t even carry the product that I chose just because it was a very expensive model. The one that did have it tried and said they couldn’t match it. They said that the only reason why I got this lower price was because EmPower had a very close relationship with SunPower where lower manufacturing costs was passed on to EmPower and they were able to pass that same to the customer.

Signing up was pretty easy. It was a little bit involved and there was a lot of the documentation required. They followed up through for everything prior to installation so I didn’t have any issues during the preparation procedure.

The salesperson was a great resource. He was always on top of things, making sure that the process was moving along. He always tried to give me the best deal possible and if I had any questions, he always replied.

I’m overall happy with EmPower. With the solar, so far, it was not bad during the first few months of installation. But now, it’s winter. Obviously, there’s no sun so it sucks.

I had to follow up with them though because during the signup process, they promised a $1,000 refund after the installation completed. Around that same time, SunPower, the company that was connected to the rebate, went bankrupt. So initially, they were not honoring that rebate and I had to chase them around a couple of times and I did get upset. Eventually, they did give the money up.

Unfortunately, the system that they used to check the solar production belongs to SunPower and currently they are still supporting it. But I already received an email in the last few weeks that the company that took over the monitoring system is gonna start charging for some features. What those features are, I don’t know. I’m just hoping that they’re not gonna charge me for the stuff that I’m using right now.

I bought my house, and a bunch of solar companies came, but they were all scams. They were all leasing scams. The prices kept going up and you didn't own the panels and they used Chinese knock-off panels that are not good at all. Then I started researching solar panels and I wanted the SunPower panels. I went on their website and I found EmPower. They've been great. I’ve already referred them to nine people, and everybody loved them.

They got everything done on schedule and installed quickly, they got the permits in five days and completed the installation in one day. I got 28 panels in total. The team was professional and any time I called for service, they're here within a day. I had no issues with them. I’ve had them since 2016, and I’m still paying nothing each month. I think they're probably the best in the business.

I purchased a solar System from Empower out of Clovis Ca in July 2021. It was activated in Feb 2022. In Feb 2024 we experienced massive leaking in all areas that the panels were installed. I was told by the first team that leaks can sometimes take some time to develop especially when they come from the screws which was our case.

The second team confirmed it was installed incorrectly. They did not seal around the base where the feet sit on the roof, eventually the water made its way through. The second team also asked me if I had "lawyered up" and that there was a lot of this happening with Empower. It appeared that the leaking had stopped. I was wrong. January 2025 after getting new insulation I wanted to make sure it stopped. It did not. It's worse than ever! I have been in contact with Empower and they offered to remove and replace the panels but refuse to fix the roof that they have essentially ruined. Now keep in mind they approved our roof as being adequate for some time to support the system! It does seem that we are going to need to get a lawyer for them to simply do the right thing.

The initial installation was good. But post-installation, the support if something goes wrong, is horrible. Right now, I have two failed panels. I've been trying to call EmPower to come back and fix it. I have not heard back from them and I've been trying for over two months. I did get one email supposedly from the person in charge of the jobs and I was told that I need to pay $1,000 to fix it, which is more than the savings for an entire year of solar, which doesn't make any sense.

They give all these guarantees for the system. There's a production guarantee and an actual factory guarantee. So, who's gonna honor those warranties?

The warranty is saying, “Your thing is covered for 25 years. The company SolarEdge is supposed to pay or replace any deficiency with that particular component.” I haven't been able to reach anyone so I’m stuck. I call directly by phone and usually, someone answers. I would get hold of somebody in the tech department. They said they'll talk to the sales or the project manager.

I used them actually for two houses. So, at the first house, the thing fell after a year and a half. It was a total failure. They couldn't do it. So, I had to call the actual solar company who made the equipment and they had to go fix it. So, they were out of the picture from that piece.

Prior to getting done is a sales thing, right? The sales will get you to sign the thing. But now that I look back on it, one thing that they never really mention is, if something goes wrong, how they will support. They're supposed to guarantee the work for 10 years. My system is gonna be 10 years this April and the equipment itself is guaranteed 25 years from the manufacturer.

Every one of these guys will probably do a decent job on the installation. But the thing we have to worry about, which I never was aware the first time I did it, is for the post-installation. If something goes wrong, how are you gonna get support and who's gonna insure the guarantee? Because they give you guarantee that your system will definitely produce X amount. If it doesn't, you'll get reimbursed. Who even checks on that stuff?

In the last five years, the production hasn't met what was guaranteed on the contract. So, who do I contact to get reimbursed? So, people have to watch out for that kind of stuff, and which they don't really tell you. It's just like, they get you to sign, they do the work, and if something goes wrong, you're on your own.

The installation process was also very easy. They made sure the electric was the way it was supposed to be. They filed the permits promptly when they were ready. And it was a one- day install. I had absolutely no problems with them.

They requested an extension to install and I got a rebate because of a price difference between the tax year ending and the rebate that I would've gotten for one year as opposed to extending it a couple of months to another year. When I had an issue, I had to just make the phone call and it took an extended amount of time to talk to somebody. The pricing was fair. The installers got things done pretty fast. It was raining throughout that whole week and they were still able to tough it through. We wanted to hide the electrical line the side of the house. My neighbor had EmPower install their solar system. I thought about it for a while, but it took me about a year before I followed up on it. A representative took a quick look and they then drafted an estimate based on my location. I reviewed it and went ahead with it. Installation went smoothly and was a one-day project.

I like the system, and I do save money on my electric bill. I’m leaning toward more electrical usage. Unfortunately, the representative recommended two extra panels that I didn’t take, but I should have taken since I have the capacity for two or three panels more. So, that way I could generate a few extra kilowatts. Because now, I have an electric car and I’m also using a heat pump type heating system.

I recommended EmPower to quite a few friends. Based on my and my neighbor’s experience with EmPower, we seem to be, so far, pretty happy with the service. They are great people to work with. They have a project manager that takes care of everything like, working with the city, taking care of the permits, getting the permit finalized, and getting the electrician to inspect the panel. It’s a turnkey operation, where I don’t have to worry about having to deal with anyone outside of EmPower. And we didn’t need any service calls. It’s been quite a few years since I had it and I have no problem with it, whereas my neighbor that added solar later had a bad problem with a company called Momentum.

Empower setup solar panels using several subcontractors. When they arrived, they immediately damaged the gutters on our garage roof. We had before and after photos because we had a feeling it wouldn't go as planned and wanted to protect ourselves. When we reported this to empower and showed them the photos of the damage, they denied the claim costing us a ton more money to have to fix it ourselves. The 2nd issue was they took their time even turning on the solar panel box, over 30 days causing us to have to pay for both the electric bill and the solar panel loan. The reps we dealt with were extremely unprofessional, they're scam artists.

Once you sign your life away on the extreme loan for the next few decades, they don't care if you have an issue because you already signed the paperwork. By the way, if you ever have to get your roof fixed, you would have to PAY to get your solar panels removed and re-installed. Not worth it! This company is horrible, we are disgusted with the way we were treated after we signed everything! You're better off getting solar panels installed on the ground and with a different company, or try to do the work yourself!

During COVID, people just kept coming, knocking on my house, trying to sell solar. I thought that it would be a good thing to do for the environment. I also wanted to switch my heating system to use electricity. So, I thought that solar would be a good thing to have.

EmPower was one of them. I basically communicated with two or three of them over the course of two years. I was working with a lady named Beth. She was really good and patient. She wasn't forceful. The other guy that I was working with, he was threatening me, just saying some mean stuff. He just texted me the other day too. But he got really belligerent. He was nice at first. And Beth was cool, nice the whole way. That’s why I went with EmPower.

Plus, she came back to me and said that the panels had dropped. So, the price was better than the other guy. And the other guy was offering to put in a Powerwall. But Beth is who sold me.

EmPower planned the installation. The installation was actually a rainy day so I didn't think they were gonna do it. There was a foreman, a really nice young guy. He was really good. He and his team did the install and then he showed me how to use the system. He helped me get an app on my phone. The whole thing with EmPower was good. I prefer their customer service. I like the fact that I could control and see everything in my app on my phone.

Also, one of my friends had used EmPower. He wasn't very happy with his service at some point, but he told me to get the best warranty. And I fought with them, and they gave me a really good warranty. So, I was happy. He's an attorney. He looked over the warranty, and he said that it's good and to go with it.

But there is this problem. The warranty has the converters. Everything was warrantied basically for 25 years, including the panel. There's also15 years for labor. Most other people only did 5 or 10 years. The only issue, and it came afterwards, is that EmPower really wanted to use these SunPower panels and SunPower went out of business. EmPower said that they had the best panels. Then there's another company that I had to switch my warranty to. So, they're gonna give me the same warranty that I had with SunPower. So, as long as they honor the warranty and they allow me to switch to it, I was very satisfied with the service.

I tried to recommend it to my friends, because I can't believe how cheap my electric bill is. My summer bill went down so much. And I'm gonna use one of those electric heat pump systems. That's the next job that I'm gonna do. So, I am very happy that I have solar. And I was very happy with Beth from EmPower. Beth has even called and checked in on me a couple times. I also had a project manager and I’ve worked with different people at different points. Beth and the project manager kept me informed of any changes. They were communicative and helpful. They answered my questions. I have their numbers and if I have a question, I can call them. They were great. No regrets.

I wanted to save money on my electric bill and EmPower Solar is a local company. The level of their service was the deciding factor to go with them. Signing up was good and the installation was quick. So far, so good. The system has been up and running for about four years, and I have no electric bill. It worked out for us.

I'm satisfied with EmPower. They were patient and answered my questions. The installation took a day and the people were friendly. They showed me and told me exactly what to expect. It went according to plan. I have saved, especially in the summer with the central air conditioning. My only concern is that the SunPower that EmPower Solar uses has gone bankrupt. So I get to a third party and it's all good, but I just need to make sure that I know where to go for my warranty. That's the headache. That was not expected when I first signed up.

We were interested in solar power to help with the bills and do what we can for the environment. At the time, EmPower was located locally in Island Park. I work in construction and a lot of the people we were working with were using them. Everything’s great. I used to use the app a lot, but now I don’t check it as much.

I was looking to purchase an electric vehicle, so I wanted solar. My sales rep, Tom, from EmPower was great. Initially, I got that one system in 2019. A year and a half later, I had to get another one to compensate for the additional drain from my Tesla. The process was great, as well as the customer service. Everyone was able to help me.

I had an issue with one of my connections on the system when it was not functioning properly. I made a call and someone came out and fixed the problem. It’s awesome that I’m only paying $200 a year on my bill.

My neighbor down the street used EmPower Solar and had nothing but rave reviews about them. He had gotten them from referrals from someone else in our neighborhood. So, I went with it as well, and I found the process amazing. Bethany was a fabulous representative. She was on top of everything and was very responsive. The company was great, too. They did all the permitting.

My electric bill is very small, if at all, and I like that. It’s worth it. My only complaint is we could have pushed it more, but that came up last minute and EmPower was very particular about their design of everything having to be a rectangle on the roof. But my roof didn’t allow that. Now I drive down my street and I see people with panels in the front of their house. And I see mismatched ones. I sent pictures of the house and address to Bethany, and they went to the village for me. They were able to get even more panels. But I don’t get 100% solar.

It was a good experience signing up with Empower. Their salesman came over one night and met with us for an hour. The installation was pain-free. They did it when we wanted it done. Having the system, I like that I don't have to be concerned about how much electricity we're paying for running the air conditioning and other things. I'm happy.

I used EmPower 8 years ago when we got the solar panels put in. They were one of the bigger retailers in Long Island, and my brother-in-law used them already. He liked them a lot and he recommended using them, so I used them too. I like working with them every step of the way. The sales rep, Scott, was great, and there were no problems with the planning and the installing. Even after we had an issue with snow coming off of the panels and breaking the gutters, they came by, replaced all the gutters and put these little stakes in there like a slate roof to break up the ice when they go down, at no cost. EmPower is an excellent company, and I totally recommend them. I'm sad to see their partner is going bankrupt, but they’re refinancing their debt, so I understand.

EmPower has an excellent sales team. They told me what I needed to know and were able to answer the questions I asked. The person who came on-site was very knowledgeable. They took everything I had concerns about into consideration and explained everything including the pricing very clearly. The representative was amazing to work with all around. Any time there was an issue, I called the sales guy and he handled it, even six months, a year later.

The installation was a pleasure. I told them exactly how I wanted it and they did it exactly as I requested. I was building a new house and wanted to make sure that all the piping was built into the house versus looking like this ugly exterior piping, which meant they had to come and do part of the process while they were building the house. Then they came back later and finished. The other companies didn't wanna do that. One said they'd do it if we paid them extra. But EmPower told us not to worry and that they got it.

EmPower is good. They're responsive and professional. They brought a lot of info and samples to look at and that gave me a lot of information to process. I like that. The paperwork took a few weeks and the installation took three days. In the spring and fall, that tends to have a lot of savings. Summer will be less. In winter, it's not much because there isn't enough sun. Their customer service has been very good. They got back to me within 24 hours and they set up sometimes an in-person visit to check the issue. Sometimes they're able to do it remotely.

The house was built in 2007 and we had the panels installed two years after that. EmPower was contracted by SunPower to do the work. They did the entire installation and were involved most recently in a repair. It was one microinverter. All of the microinverters at this point have been replaced once, if not twice. It's mostly been problems with the manufacturer, SunPower. But EmPower has been great. I monitor the system on my phone and that works well.

The permit was the most difficult thing but EmPower took care of it. They are timely and they follow up. They had to replace the inverters in each of the panels because they were substandard and not performing.

The people from EmPower Solar were very nice to work with and accommodating to my request. They responded to my initial outreach quickly. Whatever concerns I had along the process, they reacted quickly, too. They were right on the timeframe they gave me for the installation. It took just less than a day. It was a very interesting experience because the installation was done in October. And because of the way the solar system works, the first few months, I didn't see too much happening because it was the winter. But as soon as the middle of February hit, we could see every day an increasing the amount of solar production. So, it was really interesting to watch. Then at the time between February and late June where you're not really using any air conditioning, the solar production was soaring. It still does after that, but then you're using more electricity. During the summer, there's so much sun that it easily outperforms what you're using.

They’ve been very positive and professional. They're always very good experiences. The installers arrived on time and had all the materials they needed. Everything was put together extremely well. My husband mainly monitors the production but it's mostly through the app that EmPower has. We're overproducing at this point. For our PSEG bill, our loan is our payment plus the $13 that PSEG charges for surcharges. There's no additional cost on our bill. We get the buyout of what we didn't use and we make so much that there is one and a half months where we have no payment or a smaller payment.
