Feds open recall probe into 51,000 Volkswagen EVs

Federal safety regulators are investigating 51,000 VW ID.4s to determine if a recall is needed - Volkswagen

Some drivers report the door opens unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a formal investigation into 51,000 Volkswagen ID.4s, built between 2021 and 2023. The probe was triggered by at least 12 complaints that a vehicle door opened while the SUV was being driven.

Some drivers told the agency the door opens intermittently without anyone touching it. NHTSA says there have been no reports of any injuries linked to the issue.

While there is no established link, the safety regulator notes that these same vehicles were part of a previous recall to address water leaks around the door.

NHTSA said the query is designed to determine whether a recall is needed. It said it would also assess the effectiveness of previous recall remedies.
