Ford recalls 8,727 Maverick hybrids for software issue

The vehicles may shift into neutral unexpectedly

Ford’s popular hybrid pickup, introduced in the 2022 model year, is proving to be problematic for the automaker, which has issued several recalls so far this year.

In the latest recall, Ford said 8.727 2022 to 2024 Maverick hybrids may have a hybrid powertrain control module (HPCM) software error that could cause the vehicle to shift into neutral unexpectedly which can cause a loss of drive power. When a driver loses the ability to control the drive power, it will increase the risk of a crash.

A limited number of 2020 to 2022 Ford Escapes and 2021 to 2022 Lincoln Corsairs are being recalled for the same reason.

      What to do

Dealers will update the HPCM software for free. Recall notification letters are expected to be sent by May 23.

Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S33.

This is the second Maverick recall so far this month. Previously, Ford recalled 242,669 2022-2024 Mavericks because the body control module (BCM) may inadvertently deactivate one or both rear tail lights.

In March, Ford recalled 62,813 Maverick hybrids because the instrument panel cluster may not properly illuminate warning lights or gauges.

Multiple fires and injuries trigger expanded Electrolux stove recall

The company received 14 reports of fires and eight reports of injuries involving burns to hands or arms

Electrolux Group has re-anounced its recall of Frigidaire and Kenmore electric ranges after reports of multiple fires and injuries. The company recalled 203,000 of the stoves for the same issue in 2009.

Depending on the model, the surface heating elements can turn on spontaneously without being switched on. The recall notice says they can also fail to turn off after being switched off. Finally, the burners can heat to different temperatures than those that were selected.

The company says these issues can pose burn hazards to consumers. Since the recall was announced in August 2009, Electrolux has received at least 212 reports of the ranges behaving erratically, including 14 reports of fires and eight reports of injuries involving burns to hands or arms, as well as smoke inhalation.

This recall re-announcement involves Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional, and Kenmore Elite smooth-top electric ranges. The smooth-top electric ranges have rear panel rotary knobs and digital displays.

They were sold in the following colors: white, bisque, black and stainless steel. The brand name, model, and serial number for each unit are located on the frame of the drawer at the bottom of the unit when the drawer is opened.

A list of the serial numbers can be found in the recall announcement. Sears and independent appliance stores nationwide from June 2001 through August 2009 for between $1,000 and $2,500.

      What to do

Contact Electrolux or register online to participate in the recall. Based on the serial number, it will be determined if consumers have a range that can be repaired or not.

Consumers with impacted ranges should contact Electrolux for steps to avoid a burn injury, including not leaving anything on the range when it is not in use. If the range is repairable, a free inspection and repair will be scheduled.

If the range is not repairable, consumers will receive a refund in the form of a $50 electronic gift card and reimbursement of up to $60 for the haul-away fee for their recalled range, once they have submitted proof of purchase of a new range and the haul-away fee paid.

Electrolux may reimburse haul-away fees over $60 when consumers provide receipts or other documentation showing paid haul-away fees.

Consumers may contact Electrolux Group toll-free at 888-845-8226 from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, by email at potentiometerrecall@electrolux.com or online at https://www.ema-recall.com/potentiometer or www.potentiometerrecall.com or www.frigidaire.com and click on “Recall Information” at the top of the page for more information.

Regulator says Ford SUV recall remedy doesn’t fix the problem

NHTSA says the vehicles still face a fire risk

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has told Ford that its recall remedy for SUVs with a fuel leak is inadequate and that the cars still pose a risk.

In April, Ford issued an expansion of a recall of nearly 43,000 2022-2023 Bronco Sports and 2022 Escapes with 1.5L engines. The problem was the fuel injector, which the company said may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment - an obvious fire risk.

To address the problem, Ford said its dealers would update the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and install a drain tube. In a letter to the automaker, NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) said that isn’t good enough.

‘Does not address the root cause’

“Based on our review of the alleged defect, the resulting consequences, and the recall’s remedy program, ODI believes that the remedy program does not address the root cause of the issue and does not proactively call for the replacement of defective fuel injectors prior to their failure,” the letter states. “Therefore, ODI has decided to investigate the adequacy and various safety concerns of the remedy program described in NHTSA Recall 24V-187.”

The NHTSA said a safer remedy would be to replace all fuel injectors that are subject to leaks, which would be safer, but much more costly than simply installing a drain tube. The agency  said Ford’s failure to respond to the letter or take the prescribed actions could result in civil penalties.

Ford acknowledged the letter and said it would work with NHTSA to seek a resolution.

Tandem Diabetes Care iOS app recalled after more than 200 injuries

Users should immediately update to a new version

Tandem Diabetes Care has recalled a version of its iOS app for insulin pumping, t:connect, following at least 224 injuries.

The recall impacts 85,863 devices with version 2.7 of the app installed, the Tandem Diabetes said Wednesday. The recall arises from an issue that may cause the app to repeatedly crash and relaunch, draining the battery of the t:slim X2 insulin pump it connects with via Bluetooth and shutting it down prematurely.

"Pump shutdown will cause insulin delivery to suspend, which could lead to an under-delivery of insulin and may result in hyperglycemia or even diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be a life-threatening condition due to high blood sugars and lack of insulin," the FDA said.

The FDA identified the recall under its most serious classification. Tandem Diabetes Care first warned of the danger in a letter on March 26. This is Tandem Diabetes Cares's sixth recall for its medical devices, according to the FDA.

      What to do

Users should update to version 2.7.1 or newer, complete an online form, pay attention to system alerts and watch pump battery levels closely to ensure the device is at near or full charge before going to sleep.

Tandem Diabetes Care can be reached at (877) 801-6901.

Zegoo children’s nightgowns sold at Amazon are being recalled

The fabric doesn’t meet flammability-prevention standards

Zegoo, an importer, is recalling about 14,000 children’s nightgowns sold at Amazon. The children’s nightgowns violate the flammability standards for children’s sleepwear, posing a risk of burn injuries to children.

This recall involves Zegoo-branded 100% cotton children’s nightgowns sold in light pink, pink, and blue. The nightgowns are short-sleeved and have a double-lace layer at the collar with a small ribbon bow. A side-seam label lists the size, “100% Cotton,” and “MADE IN CHINA.”

      What to do

Consumers should immediately take the recalled nightgowns away from children, stop using them, and contact Zegoo Home to receive a full refund.

Consumers are advised to destroy the garments by cutting them in half and disposing of them in accordance with local and state recycling laws, and send an image of the destroyed or disposed-of garment to zegoohome@126.com.

The products were sold online at Amazon.com from April 2018 through January 2024 for between $13 and $17.

Six food recalls since April 26: Two Hy-Vee products are the latest.

Despite the flurry of recalls, no illnesses have been confirmed

Hy-Vee, Inc., based in West Des Moines, Iowa, is recalling two varieties of its Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread and its bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream Mix because of potential contamination with Salmonella.

The company notes that the recalls are being issued “out of an abundance of caution” and that no illnesses have been reported. But the recall is the sixth food recall since April 26.

On April 26, ConSup North America of Lincoln Park, N.J., recalled approximately 85,984 pounds of ready-to-eat sliced prosciutto ham because it had not been inspected.

So far in May, Gibson Farms has recalled Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts because the company believes they could be contaminated with E. Coli 0157:H7.

Cargill Meat Solutions has recalled approximately 16,243 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

Chuao Chocolatier recalled a single production of Potato Chip mini bar .39oz/11 gram chocolate bars because some packages may contain undeclared hazelnut, which could be lethal to someone with a nut allergy.

This week Hormel Foods Sales announced the recall of two PLANTERS products that have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  Palmer Candy Company of Sioux City, Iowa, recalled its “White Coated Confectionary Items” because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

      Latest food recall

The Hy-Vee recall is simply the latest related to food. The company says the recalled products are manufactured at different third-party facilities around the Midwest and are sold under HyVee’s private label and bulk packaging programs.

“The manufacturers of these products notified Hy-Vee of the potential issue and out of an abundance of caution Hy-Vee is voluntarily recalling these specific products,” the company said. “There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of any of these products.”

The affected products were distributed to Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drugstore and Dollar Fresh Market locations – as well as Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores – across the company’s eight-state region of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The recalled products are labeled as outlined below.
