Recalls in August 2023

Twin City Foods, Inc. of Stanwood, Washington, is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of Not-Ready-To Eat Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) Super Sweet Cut Corn and Mixed Vegetables in retail bags.

The company said there is a potential for these products to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. 

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

To date, there have been no actual consumer reports of human illness or other complaints associated with this product.

The recall has been initiated because finished products may potentially be contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes, based on one customer’s third party lab results for the IQF sweet cut corn.

What to do

Consumers who have purchased the affected product are urged not to consume the product and immediately return the product to the store where they purchased it for a full refund.

This recall is being made with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration.

Shenzhen Aiper Intelligent Co. is recalling about 22,000 Aiper Elite Pro GS100 cordless robotic pool vacuum cleaners. The company says that when the charging cord is plugged into the device without the adapter and/or directly into the charging port on the machine, the battery can overheat and short circuit, posing burn and fire hazards.

The firm has received 17 reports of the recalled pool vacuums overheating including one report of a minor burn to a consumer’s fingertip, which did not require medical treatment. No property damage has been reported.

This recall involves Aiper Elite Pro cordless robotic pool vacuum cleaners with model number GS100. The Elite Pro unit weighs 11.2 pounds and measures about 15.9 x 14.2 x 10 inches. 

The dark gray pool vacuum cleaners have the “Aiper” brand name printed on the top/front of the product. The model name and number are printed on the label attached on the bottom side of the pool vacuum.

The product was sold online at www.aiper.com, Amazon.com, www.cocktailpool.com, www.factorypure.com, www.myrobotdirect.com, www.wellbots.com and uspoolsite.com from January 2023 through May 2023 for between $600 and $800.

What to do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled pool vacuums and contact Aiper to receive a free replacement of Aiper's Seagull Pro robotic pool cleaner. Aiper will provide a free return label for consumers to send the product back to Aiper. 

Within seven days of receiving the recalled Elite Pro, Aiper will ship the replacement product. Aiper is contacting all purchasers directly.

Yokohama Tire Corporation is recalling  6,992 504C, size 11R22.5 16H tires. A defective belt cushion splice may allow air to leak into the sidewall.

An air bubble in the sidewall may cause a rapid loss of air pressure and loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

What to do

Dealers will inspect and replace the affected tires, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 2, 2023. Owners may contact Yokohama's customer service at 1-800-423-4544.

Ecnup of China is recalling about 215 kids bike helmets.

The recalled helmets fail to comply with the coverage, positional stability and labeling requirements of the CPSC federal safety standard for bicycle helmets and can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury.

No incidents or injuries are reported.

This recall involves Ecnup Kids Bike Helmets in size Extra Small (XS), fitting a head circumference of about 18-1/2 to 20-1/2 inches.

The helmets are pink, purple, blue, “dinosaur blue” or “aqua ocean world” with red removable padding, black straps and a black buckle.

The serial number SL712-202201 and November 2022 are printed on a white label on the inside the helmet.

The helmets, manufactured in China, were sold online exclusively at Amazon.com from January 2022, through February 2023, for between $20 and $30.

What to do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled helmets and contact Ecnup for a full refund. To receive a refund, consumers should destroy the helmet by cutting off the straps, email photos of the helmet with the straps cut off to bikebikeliu@hotmail.com to prove destruction, and then dispose of the recalled helmet.

Ozona Organics of Ozona, Texas, is recalling Ozona Probiotics for Digestive Health (intended for human use), also labeled as GoHealthy Probiotics for Infants, Toddlers and Kids, and GoHealthy Probiotics for Infants, Kids, Men and Women.

High water activity in the formula provides a potential for microbial growth, which may be harmful.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

Ozona Probiotics for Digestive Health were sold through the company’s website and www.amazon.com.

GoHealthy Probiotics were sold through the company’s website, www.amazon.com and Walmart stores.

Ozona Organics Dog, Cat, Equine, and Swine Probiotics, which are being recalled in their entirety, were sold from August 2021, through July 2023, through the company’s website.

Ozona Organics Probiotics for Dogs and Probiotics for Cats come in 4-oz blue glass bottles with droppers. Ozona Organics Probiotics for Equine and Probiotics for Swine come in 1-gallon white plastic bottles with handles.

What to do

Customers who purchased the recalled products should not consume them, but discard them.

The number of product recalls fell slightly in the April-June quarter of 2023 from the first three months of the year.

According to the Sedgwick Brand Protection Recall Index, there were 856 recalls in the second three months of the year, down slightly from 863 in the first quarter, which saw the highest single-quarter total of product recalls since the final three months of 2018.

Here's a sector-by-sector breakdown

Auto recalls

For the second quarter, there were 479 recalls compared with the five-year average of 484.

In this three-month period, the lowest half-year was 2020 with 413 recalls, with the highest 2021 with 540. In terms of the number of vehicles recalled, 2023 is at a 10-year low with 15.82 million.

Most of the auto recalls -- 51 -- were for issues involving electrical systems, compared with 48 in the last quarter. Equipment had the second-most recalls with 36, involving 1.15 million vehicles making it the third-highest category by unit this quarter.

Consumer product recalls

There was good news in the consumer product sector, as both the number of recalls and the number of products recalled were down from the January-March period.

There were 76 consumer product recalls in the second quarter compared with 94 last quarter --a drop of 19.1%.

In terms of the number of units affected, there was 10.7% decline to 20.65 million products this quarter from 23.12 million in the first quarter.

At the same time, though, the average recall size jumped to 271,767, the second-largest number. Five recalls involved more than a million units.

Food and drink recalls

During the most recent quarter, the increase in the number of units affected totaled 114.10 million, an increase of 190.6% from the previous three months.

Overall, there were six FDA food recalls -- each involving more than two million units; three of them affected more than 15 million units each.

The average recall size also grew with the 745,475 unit average up 122.2 percent over last quarter's 335,488.

The figure for the year so far is 34.4% above the average half-year figure recorded for the last five years.

According to Sedwick, with Congress and groups of state attorneys general encouraging agencies such as the FDA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to do more to protect public safety, it's a pretty safe bet that the numbers of recalls and products affected will continue to rise.

Zipadee Kids of Circleville, Ohio, is recalling about 7,450 Zipadee Kids Convertible House bed frames and Montessori floor beds.

The spindles used on the beds are spaced at a distance that creates a serious entrapment hazard to children that can lead to strangulation and/or death.

The design of the bed allows a child’s torso to slip through the rail opening but will not allow the head to pass, posing entrapment and strangulation hazards that could result in death.

At least two children have been trapped in the bed rails, including a 21-month-old boy (no injuries sustained) and a 4-year-old girl in February 2023, who sustained minor injuries.

This recall involves Zipadee Montessori beds sold in twin, full, and queen size variations of the “Convertible House Bed Frame” and “Montessori Floor Bed.”

They were shipped between February 26, 2018 and October 22, 2021.

Zipadee also sold toddler-size Montessori beds which were manufactured between May and September 2018.

The beds are all natural wood floor beds that can be raised or converted to adjust for a child’s sleeping needs as they grow and develop.

The beds are intended for children 18 months and older.

The beds and frames, manufactured in the U.S., were sold online at Zipadeekids.com and on Zipadee's Etsy.com shop from February 2018, through September 2021, for between $260 and $900.

What to do

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges consumers to dispose of the recalled beds and not to resell or donate them. It is a violation of federal law to sell or distribute recalled products.

The firm has filed for dissolution with the State of Ohio and has told CPSC that it is unable to offer a remedy to consumers.

Kia America is recalling 50,517 model year 2023 Sorentos.

The airbag warning labels on the driver and front passenger sun visors may detach.

A detached airbag warning label will not warn occupants about the risks of airbag deployment, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

What to do

Dealers will inspect and replace the driver and front passenger sun visors -- as necessary -- free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 10, 2023.

Midwest Lubricants of Fredericktown, Mo., is recalling about 3,000 containers of sodium hydroxide.

The packaging of the products is not child resistant, as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA), posing a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes.

Additionally, the label on the product violates the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) by omitting the mandatory information.;

No incidents or injuries have been reported

This recall involves Midwest Lubricants 99% Pure Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Soda Beads sold in a white 10-pound bottle.

Midwest Lubricants, 99% Pure Sodium Hydroxide/Lye, and Caustic Soda Beads are printed on the red, blue, and white label.

The sodium hydroxide, manufactured in the U.S., was sold online at MidwestLubricants.com and Amazon.com from January 2020, through June 2023, for about $44.

What to do

Consumers should immediately store the recalled product in a safe location out of sight and reach of children and contact Midwest Lubricants for a free replacement with child-resistant packaging and a new label.

Mazda North American Operations is recalling 17,600 model year 2024 CX-90s.

Software in the Approaching Vehicle Audible System (AVAS) Information Sound Box (ISB) amplifier may be missing, which can cause inaccurate, external pedestrian warning sounds.

Inaccurate external warning sounds may confuse pedestrians about the direction of an approaching vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

What to do

Dealers will update the AVAS ISB amplifier software free of charge.

Letters notifying owners of this issue are expected to be mailed October 3, 2023.

Subaru of America is recalling 35,357 model year 2024 Crosstreks and Imprezas.

Due to insufficient clearance, the instrument panel harness may contact the steering beam bracket, damaging the wire insulation and causing a short circuit.

A short circuit may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

What to do

Dealers will inspect the harness and install an additional clamp on the steering beam bracket.

If damage is found, dealers will add protective tape or replace the instrument panel harness as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 3, 2023.

Unilever United States is recalling select Knorr Sopa soup mix.

The products may contain egg, an allergen not declared on the label.

There are no reports of consumer complaints or allergic reactions to date.

The following products, which come in a 3.5-oz package, with best if used by date of July 6, 2024, and were sold nationwide, are being recalled:

• Knorr Estrellitas con Tomate Tomato Based Star Pasta Soup Mix, UPC 048001716193;
• Knorr Fideos con Tomate Tomato Based Pasta Soup Mix, UPC 048001716162; and

Costco Wholesale Corp., of Issaquah, Wash., is recalling about 350,000 Ubio Labs power banks.

The recalled power banks can overheat and ignite, posing a fire hazard.

The firm has received three reports of fire, including one report of fire on a commercial flight resulting in four reports of smoke inhalation and one report of a minor burn injury to passengers.

This recall involves Ubio Labs power banks, sold in either a pack of one or a pack of two.

The recalled power banks are black and have the model number PWB1071 printed on the back and the Costco item number printed on the package.

The item number for the single pack is 1314518; the item number for the two-pack is 1265470.

The power banks, manufactured in China, were sold at Costco stores nationwide and online at www.costco.com from March 2019, through December 2020, for the 1-pack for about $32, and from September 2018, through December 2020, for the 2-pack for about $40.

What to do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled power banks and contact Costco for a full refund. Ubio Labs is no longer in operation.

Zipadee Kids is recalling nearly 7,500 convertible house bed frames and Montessori floor beds because of the risk that children could become trapped or strangled.

The spindles used on the recalled beds are spaced at a distance that creates a serious entrapment hazard that can lead to strangulation and/or death to children. Gree has agreed to recall 1.56 million of its dehumidifiers because of a potential fire hazard. The company says the appliances can overheat, smoke, and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Gree said it has received reports of at least 23 fires connected to the product, 688 incidents of overheating, and $168,000 in property damage.

The recall involves 42 models of dehumidifiers with brand names Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole and Seabreeze, manufactured between January 2011 and February 2014. The recalled model numbers are included in the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice.

The brand name and pint capacity are printed on the back, front, or side of the dehumidifier.  The model number and date code are printed on a sticker on the back, front, or side of the unit.  

The dehumidifiers are white, beige, gray or black plastic and measure between 19 and 24 inches tall, 13 and 15 inches wide, and 9 and 11 inches deep.

What to do

Consumers should immediately stop use, unplug the dehumidifiers, and contact Gree to receive a refund.

Sensio is recalling 860,000 pressure cookers sold in the U.S. because of a potential burn hazard. The recalled products include Bella, Bella Pro Series, Cooks and Crux Electric and Stovetop models.

The stainless-steel electric pressure cookers are six-, eight-, and 10-quart capacity. The stovetop pressure cookers are five-, eight-, and 12-quart capacity.  

The item or model number of the recalled pressure cookers is printed on the permanent on-product label or imprinted stamp on the bottom of the cookers. The model numbers can be found here.

Sensio has received 63 reports of incidents, including 61 burn injuries, some of which involved second and third-degree burns to the face, torso, arms, and hands.

The pressure cookers were sold at JCPenney, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s and Target stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com and other websites from September 2015 through September 2020 for between $30 and $70 for the electric pressure cookers and for between $8 and $18 for the stovetop pressure cookers.

What to do

Target has announced the recall of 2.2 million Threshold candles due to a potential laceration risk. The company says the candle’s jar can crack or break during use.

The recall involves certain Threshold Glass Jar 5.5 ounce 1-Wick and 20-ounce 3-Wick Candles in multiple scents. The recalled item numbers are printed on the product stickers located on the bottom of the glass jars.

Target received 19 reports of the candle jar breaking or cracking during use, resulting in one minor injury. The candles were sold at Target stores nationwide and www.target.com from February 2020 through July 2023 for between $3 and $12.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled candles and return them to any Target store for a full refund, or contact Target to receive a prepaid return label to return the candles by mail.

The Children's Place has issued a recall for two styles of baby and toddler boy basic straight-leg jeans because of a possible choking hazard.

The company says the metal snaps on the jeans can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. About 97,400 units were sold in the U.S.

This recall involves Baby and Toddler Boy Basic Stretch Straight Leg Jeans sold in sizes 6-9M to 5T. Only the Baby and Toddler Boy Jeans with the style numbers 3022341 and 3022342, and vendor number 7000541 are being recalled. The numbers can all be found on a sewn-in, side-seam label inside the jeans near the left pocket.

The jeans were sold exclusively at The Children’s Place stores nationwide from September 2022 through March 2023 (for style number 3022341, vendor number 7000541) and from January 2023 through June 2023 (for style number 3022342, vendor number 7000541) for about $25.

The firm has received one report of snaps detaching from the jeans. No injuries have been reported.

What to do

Consumers should immediately take the recalled jeans away from children and return the jeans to any The Children’s Place store for a full refund. The Children’s Place is notifying all known purchasers.
